Coconut Wireless

Talk of the Island

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

WMSA CHAIRMAN TOM CANNON IS SICK OF ALL THE MEDDLING KIDS Just when you thought that giant heap of hurt the Wailuku Main Street Association (WMSA) leaped into couldn’t get any bigger (and that heap already includes a subpoena from the state Attorney General and a Dec. 5 court date), we’ve obtained a couple letters from October showing the county’s most controversial nonprofit has threatened to sue the County of Maui. In mid-October, Maui County Planning Director Will Spence asked (once again) for WMSA Board Chairman Tom Cannon to provide a lot of details about what his organization has been doing with the hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds the county has been sending their way each year. The county also refused to pay the association’s $243,000 grant for this year (this decision was made very easy after Deputy Attorney General Hugh Jones wrote a scathing report a few months ago ripping WMSA for a wide variety of “mismanagement” issues). On Oct. 18, Cannon sent a reply to the county. It’s written in his trademark neener-neener fashion to which WMSA observers have long grown accustomed: “[W]e can only conclude that the County of Maui Planning Department has no intention of complying with the financial obligations set out in our contract for Grant 3382, as evident in Mr. Spence’s letter. WMSA will be seeking legal counsel and filing suit against the County of Maui.” See? The state AG is subpoenaing the WMSA, so WMSA is turning around and suing the county. It’s all fair, right? On Nov. 8, The Maui News published a good story on the letters, but it seriously downplays the frothy anger and unintentional humor that boils around in Cannon’s Oct. 18 letter. To wit: “We feel at this time that it is not appropriate to correspond with your department on this subject as Wailuku Main Street Association is currently in litigation,” Cannon wrote.

“Litigation?” Like a lawsuit? A search of the Hawaii court dockets turned up exactly one case involving WMSA: state Attorney General David Louie’s Oct. 12, 2012 petition to get the association to comply with a subpoena. When I asked Cannon for clarification, he emailed me seven web definitions of the word “litigation” (most of which defined it vaguely as “legal action”) and attached a letter he wrote back in July awarding me a coveted “Best Bone-Headed NonJournalism Award.” But let’s assume that Cannon just didn’t want to mention that the state AG has subpoenaed his ass and decided to use the softer term “litigation” instead. Almost sounds prudent that he wouldn’t want to give up any goods. But then Cannon continues: “In good faith, we once again state that to require significantly more details from a grant-in-aid with necessary safeguards in place is something entirely new and a definite change in the agreed upon rule. To suddenly change what is required midstream is not what should be expected from an administrator of a grant-in-aid that was previously scrutinized by the Council’s Budget Committee Chair and Corp Council [sic].” Never mind the fact that the “scrutiny” Cannon mentions never actually occurred. Can you taste the venom in Cannon’s words? Hey, I’d be pissed too if I was him.

Overheard

BIG SUGAR, BIG MONEY, BIG LIES?

People are apparently consuming mass quantities of sugar. In fact, The Maui News reported that HC&S sold 36,300 tons of bulk sugar in the third quarter of 2011, but doubled that sale to 72,400 tons during the third quarter this year. Great news, right? Turns out no. In their November/December 2012 issue, Mother Jones has a brutal investigation on the “sweet little lies” that have long gone into the marketing of sugar in this nation. Specifically, the notion that sugar is “healthier” than other sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup (which, to be clear, is not good for you). In fact, the magazine noted, sugar is “addictive in much the same way as cigarettes and alcohol, and that overconsumption of them is driving worldwide epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes (the type associated with obesity).” Good thing Big Sugar and its high-paid lobbyists and sales execs are there to sweeten up that kind of news by pointing out at every possible turn that research into sugar’s harmful effects (which is admittedly starved of funds) is “inconclusive” and “‘lacks the scientific evidence or consensus’ to support its claims,” the magazine noted. “This incon-

Even with the recent inflamed passions and controversy regarding Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S)’s burning of sugar cane in the fields before harvesting, which has long exacerbated respiratory discomfort and ailments for many island residents, the company is reporting doubled profits in the third quarter of 2012, according to the Nov. 9 Maui News. “Revenues from Hawaiian Commercial & Sweet, sweet misery Sugar Co. jumped 83 percent to $67.9 million for the quarter,” the paper reported. clusiveness, of course, is precisely what the “The sugar entity’s profits more than douSugar Association has worked so assidubled to $9.1 million.” ously to maintain. ‘In confronting our critics,” The reason for such substantial gains? [Sugar Association President John] Tatem explained to his board of directors back in 1976, ‘we try never to lose sight of the fact that no confirmed scientific evidence links sugar to the death-dealing diseases. This crucial point is the lifeblood of the association.’” Sweet! PHOTO COURTESY WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

Small town, big controversy

Think about it: for decades, that organization has gotten hundreds of thousands of dollars each year from the county with no questions asked. Now, a bunch of meddling kids–reporters, former WMSA board members, the county Planning Director, the county Corporation Counsel, the state Attorney General, etc.–are going around asking a bunch of critical questions. Of course, it would have been nice if Cannon could spell “Corp. Counsel” properly in his letter to the Maui County Corporation Counsel. That’s just good manners. Especially considering that the Corporation Counsel’s office (which apparently has its own spelling concerns) has the power to do things like “terminate” WMSA’s grant and “seek injunctive relief to insure [sic] the protection of any property that was purchased by Wailuku Main Street Association with County grant funds,” which is exactly what Corporation Counsel Patrick Wong told Cannon he would do in his Oct. 26 reply.

“It’s crazy, man. Mother Nature ain’t no joke.”

CORRECTION In the Nov. 8, 2012 Coconut Wireless, I misstated the dollar amount of the county's recent $71.2 million General Obligation Bond. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

LOCAL PLUGS BY JEN RUSSO

MAPA HIGHLIGHTS THE FIGHT OVER SAME-SEX MARRIAGE BY PUTTING ON 8 We may have had some victories in the same-sex marriage issue on Election Day, with legalization victories in Washington, Maryland and Maine, but the affair is still very much a hot button. On Nov. 30, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear about a half dozen challenges to same-sex marriage, including California’s infamous Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage and has already been declared unconstitutional by that state’s Supreme Court. This controversial case went to trial in 2010, and against the desires of the judge and plaintiffs, the State of California sealed the videos of the case from the public but was not able to do the same with the transcripts. That is where Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black steps in. He wrote his play 8 from those transcripts as well as interviews with participants and media coverage during the actual trial. “The goal of 8 is to show the world that marriage equality is a basic constitutional right and that those who would deny this basic freedom from loving committed couples have only baseless hyperbole to fall back on,” said Melissa Gills of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER). “At the hundreds of theaters where the play has been performed, audiences walk out with a clear understanding of the arguments made by anti-marriage forces, and importantly, are able to witness inequality and discrimination unequivocally rejected in a court of law where truth

and facts matter. These performances have been incredibly important in educating audiences and changing hearts and minds about marriage equality.” When the anti-marriage proponents of Prop. 8 fiercely rejected the televised and Internet broadcast of the proceedings in the 12-day trial, AFER knew they had to find a way to show the world what happened in this historic case. Now, the Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) will perform a reading of the play on Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Steppingstone Playhouse in Queen Ka’ahumanu Center. All the net proceeds will go to AFER (afer.org). “As with many sensitive topics, live theater offers audiences the opportunity to engage with these subjects in a safe, thoughtful environment,” said David Johnston, MAPA’s Executive and Artistic Director. “Our goal is to bring the Maui community together to shed light on the very personal stories attached to this important issue.” The play has been performed by theaters across the west coast to great acclaim. Rob Reiner directed the A-list version, which featured George Clooney, Martin Sheen and a host of other Hollywood actors. It was an immediate hit. “When Dustin Lance Black wrote the script for 8, he based it on the actual words of the trial transcripts,” said Gills. “So what you see in the play are the best arguments and testimony from both sides, laid out as they were in court. In many ways, the case served as the nation’s first ‘truth commission’ on marriage equality. We had 17 expert witnesses testify during trial and directly refute the arguments made by anti-marriage forces. Interestingly, our opponents called only

TEDxMAUI COMING JAN. 13, 2013 The second edition of TEDxMaui is just two months away. Ted Talks created an international spirit of exchanging information, or “ideas worth spreading,”

as their mission statement says. TEDx conferences are organized at the local level and are designed to stimulate dialogue in the community. TEDx Maui is still coordinating some of the speakers, but the date for the event is set: Jan. 13, 2013 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Tickets are on sale now. All TEDxMaui talks are videotaped and broadcast on their website. Subjects like art, business, culture, entertainment and science are part of the message. Dr. Gary Greenberg, a Maui scientist and inventor, gave one of the talks presented at the January 2012 conference. The mother site, TED.com, selected that talk to be featured on its site, which is quite an accomplishment for the TEDxMaui crew. His presentation, titled “The Beautiful Nano Details of our World,” uses 3D microscopes to reveal the beauty in things not visible to the naked eye. It’s already seen web traffic in excess of 75,000 views. “TED is one of the world’s largest online resources for sharing the best and most innovative ideas,” says TEDxMaui founder Katie McMillan. “Recently, it was reported that over one billion people have watched TED talks. To know that TEDxMaui is a vessel for bringing the remarkable work of Maui’s residents to that stage makes being a part of this team incredibly rewarding.” TEDxMaui is currently seeking sponsors. Why so controversial?

two witnesses to the stand during the entire trial, one of whom has since come out publicly in favor of marriage equality.” Attendees are encouraged to stay after the show for a discussion of the play’s themes. The post-show conversation is a mediated, town hall format where the audience determines the topics based on what moves them and where the discussion goes. “As an educational performing arts organization, we believe that live theater can be a powerful tool for bringing the community together to explore broader themes and issues,” says Adam Burke of MAPA. “Throughout the years, the theater community has brought important social issues to mainstream audiences through groundbreaking works like To Kill a Mockingbird, Inherit The Wind and Love! Valor! Compassion! We’re honored to continue that tradition. Our goal is to engage, entertain and educate in every production we do, and to encourage dialogue in the community about the different questions raised by each show.” According to AFER, any theater can put on 8 free of charge (they have to submit a form to AFER first). That helped MAPA, which is selling tickets for 8 at just $8 for adults and $5 for students under 18. Call 244-8760 or visit mauiacademy.org. Tickets are also available at the customer service kiosk at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD

DISGRACED BUT NOT CONTRITE Randy Adams, the former police chief of Bell, Calif., had resigned in disgrace after prosecutors charged eight other city officials with looting the municipal budget. Adams had been recruited by the alleged miscreants (at a sweetheart salary twice what he made as police chief of much larger Glendale), and his resignation left him with a generous state pension of $240,000 a year. Rather than quietly accept the payout, Adams immediately appealed to a state pension panel, claiming that his one inexplicably rich year in Bell had actually upped his pension to $510,000 a year. In September, with a straight face, Adams pleaded his case to the panel, but 20 times during the questioning invoked his right not to incriminate himself.

A 15-year-old Swedish student, working at Malmo University Hospital on a “practical work-life” internship, was allowed by a doctor to make part of the incision for a cesarean section childbirth and to examine the patient vaginally. One alarmed cesarean patient alerted news media after reading about the orientation program in May and wondering if she had been a “hands-on” patient.

ANTI-SOCIAL MEDIA IRS agents, investigating tax-fraud suspect Rashia Wilson, 26, turned up “thousands” of identification numbers in a September home search in Tampa. Wilson had already laid down a challenge in May, when she wrote on Facebook: “I’m Rashia, the queen of IRS tax fraud. [I’m] a millionaire for the record. So if you think that indicting me will be easy, it won’t. I promise you. I

won’t do no time, dumb [expletive unpublished].” The search also turned up a handgun, and since Wilson is a convicted felon (with 40 arrests), she was jailed and denied bail in part because of the Facebook post.

WAY TOO MANY APPS The Swiss company Blacksocks offers an iPhone app that utilizes radio frequency identification chips inserted into socks so they can be automatically sorted. Then there’s the iPoo app. It, reported Wired magazine in November, “[l]ets you chat with your fellow defecators from the comfort of your own toilet.” And “in development” now, according to Harvard freshman Olenka Polak, is a “Code Red” app that creates an exchange network so that women and girls who find themselves unexpectedly spotting can locate an emergency source for a tampon or pad.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Two men robbing an Open Pantry store in Madison, Wis., in October escaped, but with less money than they came with. The lead thief grabbed a handful of cash that the clerk had been counting when the pair entered. The clerk pleaded, then sternly demanded that the man give back the money. The thief thought for a moment, became remorseful, threw all the money in his pocket to the floor, and fled. The clerk told police that when she re-counted the money, there was $1 more than in her original count, meaning that the thief had accidentally tossed in a dollar of his own. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1622n3

New book titles that illuminate Maui and Hawaii

t a time when more of our written words appear on bright computer and phone screens than ever before, we’ve decided to go retro and celebrate books printed on wood pulp. Paper, properly preserved, can last for centuries–probably a bit longer than the latest iPad, we’re guessing. Regardless of the medium we use, reading forces us to use our brains like no other activity. Anthropologists are beginning to understand that without reading, our entire society and civilization would be different. Instead of stretching out in a world of complex and abstract ideas that we can share with relative ease, we would be trapped in an anecdotal world of personal experiences, unable to comprehend that which we didn’t witness first-hand. It’s not enough for the mind to observe–it must be allowed to imagine, and reading provides no better mental exercise. So here are six new books written by individuals intimately familiar with Maui and Hawaii. Some are lavishly put together, others thinner and more economical. All have one thing in common: they force us to use our minds to imagine Maui or Hawaii in a new way. Enjoy!

A

Daughters of Fire By Tom Peek Koa Books, Kihei 495 pages; $20 There’s an opulent new resort going up on Hawaii Island, and local activists aren’t happy about it. Rough characters move in the shadows, committing shocking crimes and carrying out dark rituals. Locals see it all, but live in fear and say nothing. Ignorant haoles blunder into trouble, slowly learning about the fiery trouble that bubbles beneath the island’s surface–both literally and figuratively–but also the deep connection that binds the Kanaka people to their land. This isn’t noir, with moral ambiguities and anti-heroes–chapter titles like “Evil Afoot On The Sacred Volcano” and “The Governor’s

Weasel” lay things down pretty clearly–but Daughters of Fire is still a great read. It’s a lush and earnest story of good and evil, rich in metaphor and magical realism that takes place in contemporary times but holds fast to a time long gone. This is a book about power and justice. It hits those thematic anvils pretty hard, starting on the very first page with a quote from President Barack Obama about the “grim” and “unjust” troubles in Hawaii’s past. Speaking of which, this may be a novel, but it’s also one of the most factually aware novels I’ve come across. It contains an Author’s Note, Afterword, Suggestions for Further Reading, a glossary of Hawaiian and pidgin terms, a Hawaiian language pronunciation guide and three pages of Acknowledgments. At times, even the text itself reads like a guidebook for mainlanders who know nothing of Hawaii: “‘Uncle Sonny, tell us more,’ said a man standing by the exit, tattooed arms folded across his chest. He was not Sonny Kiakahi’s nephew, but part of a larger family–the Hawaiian community–and respected elders were always referred to in a familial way, as ‘Uncle’ or ‘Aunty.’” That said, certain elements don’t ring true. A newspaper story that alleges a scientific cover-up is too simplistic, and it’s highly unlikely that state officials would allow a resort to include a jungle filled with live crocodiles. Still, there’s enough romance, intrigue and murder in Daughters of Fire to make the novel an interesting yarn even for a reader born in the islands. But at times the book seems too eager to teach the reader about Kanaka culture. Exposing the drama of Hawaii that doesn’t appear in guidebooks or in-flight magazines is nothing particularly new in literature. Even I’ve written two novels that have fun with that theme. Every city in America is more complex than the brochures put out by its Visitors Bureau and Chamber of Commerce, but given the mountains of money people make in Hawaii off the land, and the way a complex word like “aloha,” which the Kanaka used to express undying love, has been twisted into a friendly way of saying “hello” and “goodbye,” another correction is always welcome. It’s not enough to learn about Hawaii, the book seems to say–you must also respect it. You can find those words written in dozens of guidebooks, but this novel shows why.

Kalaupapa: A Collective Memory By Anwei Skinsnes Law University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu 575 pages, $49

Imi wale ia oe la e ka Lani, You are much sought, Heavenly One,

Ma na paia o ka nahele, Among the verdant bowers of upland forests, Aia ihea oe e ka Lani? Where have you gone, Heavenly One? E hai mai oe e ke ala. Reveal a trace of that familiar scent. -From Imi Ia Ka Lani–“The Heavenly One is Sought”–Composed by Kapoli Kamakau upon the death of her close friend Princess Likelike. Translation by Carol L. Silva.

For anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one, these lyrics strum a familiar chord. Kalaupapa: A Collective Memory is a bulky 570-page composition that outlines the history of the leprosy epidemic in Hawaii from 1866 to present day. The book compiles an impressive collection of detailed information, personal stories, letters, pictures, songs and poems, all time-lined in a textbook format. If there were a course on Kalaupapa, this would likely be its textbook. With its history book-like appeal, fused with intimate pictures and well-documented stories, this book succeeds in personalizing the impact of leprosy in Hawaiian history and follows the mass effect disease plays on a culture and its communities. It’s organized format makes the book an easy read while its sub-heading chapters allows for readers to begin Kalaupapa exploration at any page. Put simply, Kalaupapa: A Collective Memory is the book on Kalaupapa. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the back stories of Kalaupapa, Hawaiian history, politics and injustice, as well as for those trying to understand and cope with the weight of disease and loss.

Visitor Channel, earned six Emmy awards while working at CBS News and was badly injured by a cop’s nightstick while trying to cover the riotous 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. Pastor Laki Pomaikai Ka‘ahumanu turned to religion after both a tour of duty in the Vietnam war and multiple drug trafficking convictions. These are few of the more intriguing discoveries found in writer Norm Bezane’s new book Maui For Millions , which collects a few of his past columns from the Lahaina News . It’s all hagiography, of course–like the paper he writes for, there’s nothing in these pages even remotely controversial or negative. But even a “small book” (as Bezane calls the volume, which is his second) still proves to be interesting. A visitor to the island since 1969, Bezane and his family moved to the Westside in 2001. His career is a mix of journalism and public relations, and this book (which is self-published) seems a pretty solid blend of both, though with some odd third-person self-love thrown. “In 2008, he [Bezane] performed the rare trick of being recognized for his work from Hawaii chapters of both the Society of Professional Journalists and the Public Relations Society of America,” Bezane himself writes of himself in a biographical note at the end. “Bezane writes from the perspective of a curious newcomer to the islands and not as an

expert on the culture. From the unique point of view of an ‘outsider,’ he feels it is a privilege to learn and to acquire new understanding.” Still, Bezane’s a good reporter–he sits and listens to people. His questions may be innocuous, but he makes up for that by profiling individuals who hold some measure of authority or celebrity in West Maui. The result is a quick but interesting primer on some of the more notable names in Maui, including musicians Amy Hanaiali‘i, Willie K and George Kahumoku. His profiles of local Continued on page 12

The Spy Lover By Kiana Davenport Thomas and Mercer, New York 303 pages, $14.95 The overall atmosphere of this book is of bleakness and claustrophobia, with stultified lives of few choices. The writing is moving and sharp and gives a striking wallop of reality to the facts of war, discrimination, hunger, loneliness and longing. The author places the story far away and long ago, though it began by studying the ancestry of her own family; Hawaiian, Chinese and Caucasian. A Chinese boy and his younger brother leave China as kids, to avoid famine and civil war, with a heroic push by their father to “run for your lives.” They walk and forage and hide their way to a port where beckoning sailors are signing on a crew. Exhausted and hopeless, Johnny Tom joins, only to be covered by canvas sacks and rolled to the galley with thousands of other Chinese men and boys, all kidnapped to work sugar cane fields in Hawaii. He ends up on an outer island called Moku Nui, Big Island. There he meets a “brown-shouldered girl, Mehealani Honohano.” Johnny Tom says, “her name so ha-full I give up! I call her Laughter.” Her laughter, he recalls, sounded like “temple bells.” He labors in the fields at backbreaking work, but finds some peace with Laughter, until her father hacks

12 NOVEMBER 15, 2012

his way through the fields to confront Johnny, threatening to cut off Johnny’s testicles for his pregnant daughter’s carrying a “yellow monkey” baby. As Johnny flees on a ship, he sees Laughter on the dock with his baby daughter, waving goodbye. Johnny Tom goes to San Francisco, where anti-Chinese sentiments are high. He ends up with another wife, Raindance, who is an Alibamo Creek Indian, and his daughter Era, in a Chinese settlement in Mississippi called Shisan. Life is simple enough, after all his struggles. Then a war begins and Confederate soldiers invade and kidnap the men to fight. Most of the Chinese men defect to the Union Army because they have a very clear picture of discrimination and they know what they’re fighting for. But the Confederates retaliate by returning to the settlement to rape and kill the women and daughters left behind. He is haunted by fear for his daughter and wife. Eventually the story is told from the point of these three characters–Johnny Tom, Era (his daughter) and a Confederate soldier named Warren Rowan Pitticomb. The stifling atmosphere of war, darkness, cold, fear, guilt and the moral questions asked by the characters of themselves all serve to turn the pages, and you will cringe at some of the scenes.

Tales & Flukes From Life in the Trees By Jim Loomis Zantar Publishing, Haiku 287 pages, $27 This book is a trip. Seriously. For anyone who knows Jim Loomis, this isn’t at all surprising. “At last we get to hear from this mind, this physicist of consciousness who has walked naked and splendid into the incredible opportunity that we all call life,” said the writer Paul Wood in a quote reproduced on the back of the book. “Each of his great little tales is a koan.” Part memoir, part photo album, part poetry collection, the book is all Loomis and all fantastic. Born in California in 1935, he taught mathematics, then moved to Maui in 1970. He recently suffered a heart attack and stroke, he told me when I spoke to him last week, but seems to be recovering. It’s clear from reading just a few pages that Loomis’ mind spins just a little faster (and a few degrees off) from the rest of us. The result is crisp, living prose that dances and leaps off the page. “I’m grateful for the typing course I took sixty years ago,” he writes. “And agriculture: my carrot won first prize. Wish I had known then, that was the apex of my career. Apex of a water chimp’s career. Not seaweed, but a carrot, orangeness bursting from the brown soil.”

recedes from the memories of the living,” he writes. “This process of change, in part natural and in part the result of rapid development, has been augmented by a long-standing dispute between the State and Maui County over responsibility of old government roads after the State took the best highways out of the county road system and cut county funding for transportation.” Nonetheless, the book contains an outstanding collection of large, clear photos documenting West Maui’s roads in the earliest years of the 20th century, as well as a series of maps (some well over a century old) showing roads and trails long consumed by the land and land development. It also reprints Martha Foss Fleming’s informative 1933 text “Old Trails of Maui” as well as numerous Hawaii court cases dealSomehow, Loomis has managed to distill the entire island of Maui–all its vibrant color and contradictions–into a book that we can hold in our hands (though it is somewhat heavy). It’s an achievement we should cherish. We hear about Loomis and his young daughter in a sailboat lobbing water balloons at a nuclear submarine off the Westside. We see him at the optometrist trying to talk his way out of having Glaucoma. And we can smell what happens when he eats mangoes with a homeless guy under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina. Loomis’ book offers not just a new way of thinking about Maui, but a new way of thinking about everything. There are few people anywhere as thoughtful as Jim Loomis, and we’re all richer that he’s given us this book.

Public Access to the Roads and Trails of West Maui By Jon M. Van Dyke and Maile Osika North Beach-West Maui Benefit Fund, Lahaina 113 pages, $24 It’s probably best to say at the outset what this book is not. It isn’t a guidebook full of handy tips on how to find secret trails and hikes. It’s not a detailed history of transportation in Lahaina. And it’s not a book you’ll want to curl up with on the beach. More than anything, this book– penned mainly by the late Jon M. Van Dyke, one of finest legal minds in Hawaii until his 2011 death–is a legal case that strengthened public access throughout West Maui. It’s the first of planned series of books seeking to “expand the base of knowledge and understanding of West Maui’s transportation history, and possibilities for the present and future.” In his forward, Maui attorney Lance D. Collins makes this crystal clear. “As time passes, the knowledge and recollection of old roads and trails

ing with road ownership. The text, which analyzes the legal history of roads in Hawaii, can be quite legalistic and thoroughly laced with footnotes. “Public road and trails in Hawai‘i are held perpetually in public trust until officially abandoned in accordance with State law,” the book concludes. “This means that all public roads, trails, and rights-of-way continue to be owned by the government even if they appear to have fallen into disuse.” There’s great power in that conclusion (especially for West Maui, much of which is under threat of disappearing beneath home and resort construction) but few without law degrees will see it. Still, Public Access is a tremendous resource for those who want to understand how people got around the island in decades past, and how we might improve travel for future generations.

THURSDAY, NOV. 15 FOOD SECURITY – Despite the abundant land and natural resources, Hawaii still imports 85 percent of its food and only has a seven-day supply of food on store shelves at any given time. Scared? You should be. But here’s your chance to explore the issues of food security and access to food that’s affordable, safe, healthy and culturally acceptable and food that is produced in ways that are environmentally sound and socially just. This Thursday, Ala Kukui will present “Food Security,” the fourth part in the Man, Woman and Nature Series. The evening will discuss the relationship of humans to the natural world. Guest speakers Karen Washington, a New York City community gardener and activist, and John Lind, a Kipahulu taro farmer, will moderate. $10. 6pm. Maui Arts and Cultural Center, McCoy Studio Theater (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 808-242-2787; www.mauiarts.org.

ON ENSEMBLE – Infusing the powerful rhythms of Japanese drumming with hip-hop, rock and electronica, On Ensemble puts together an incredibly unique sound. On Ensemble drums their way onto the MACC’s stage for a “world fusion mix” with the ancient taiko as the foundation. On Ensemble draws inspiration from Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten, instrument maker to the emperor. Join the drum circle in an evening where tradition meets innovation. $12, $28, $35. 7:30pm. Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Castle Theater (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 808-242-2787; mauiarts.org.

THURSDAY, NOV. 15 LADIES NIGHT – Captain Jack’s has ordered that henceforth, EVERY Thursday night is now Ladies Night. So grab your girlfriends and cruise to the popular Lahaina establishment for specials all evening. FRIDAY, NOV. 16 PIZZA PORT BEER DINNER – This Friday, Maui Brewing Company is presenting a Beer Dinner with Yiga Miyashiro, the head brewer of San Diego’s Pizza Port. Hailing from San Diego, Miyshiro has been in the industry less than a decade but has made splashes with his twoyear-old brewpub. The 2011 Great American Beer Festival named his pub the best and awarded medals for his various brews. He was also named one of San Diego Magazine’s 50 people to watch in 2012. MAKAHIKI FESTIVAL – The Hawaiian Makahiki season is a time of feast, game, athletic contest and tributes to chiefs and gods. In the old days, all warfare was taboo. We don’t have to worry about fighting now, but the festival still goes on–specifically, at The Fairmont Kea Lani. The Opening Ceremony will take place in the lobby on Friday, Nov 16 (6pm-7pm). Farewell to Twilight... For Now BY BARRY WURST II

Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Rated PG-13 / 115 Min.

Editor’s note: Because of the press screening schedule of Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2, we are unable to bring you a review by press time. Instead, our reviewer has written this essay on the end of the popular movie franchise.

H

ere’s my favorite story about being a movie critic: during my first year of writing for MauiTime, I wrote a scathing review of the first Twilight movie. I hadn’t read any of the Stephenie Meyer books the film franchise-to-be was based on, wasn’t aware of the literary phenomenon of all things Bella Swan and couldn’t have cared less. I saw Twilight the weekend it opened in November 2008, thought it was a genuinely bad movie, wrote a negative critique and moved on. Everything about the film underwhelmed me: the rotten acting, the laughable special effects, the vampires who lack fangs or powers of transformation but sparkle, the lack of chemistry between the romantic leads and the irredeemably hilarious sight of vampires

playing baseball during a thunderstorm. I honestly thought the movie was another Eragon, by which I mean it seemed like another wannabe Harry Potter bookto-film franchise, that would die after opening weekend. To my utter amazement, audiences worldwide loved the movie. They didn’t just love it, they ADORED it. Among fans of the film was a classroom of Kihei Charter School middle school students. Their teacher read my article aloud and then told his class to write me a letter in response. These young students found the opportunity for revenge too good to pass up and the MauiTime mailbox was loaded with dozens of heartfelt declarations of love for Twilight and hatred for yours truly. MauiTime published the letters and many of them were gems: My favorite quotes were “Just because you’re a movie critic, doesn’t mean you have to be so critical,” “you need to read the books so you know what you’re talking about!” and “If you never made a movie, you are in no position to criticize the special effects!” These kids meant business and they were pissed. All except one, apparently the one boy in the class, who wrote me, “Dear Barry, Great review. Keep up the good work. Love, Lars.” I hope that kid becomes president some day.

FRIDAY NOV.16TH • 6PM $69

I’ve gone back and rewatched the first Twilight, partly to see if there was something I missed and because of the guilt I felt for making a class full of cute kids so angry. My assessment after a second The end! viewing: my one-star review was too generous. I went to see the sequels with an open mind and found that they ranged from lousy (New Moon), awful (Eclipse) and bad but better than expected (Breaking Dawn Part 1). As of this writing, I haven’t seen Breaking Dawn Part 2 but, seriously, even if it’s a surprise entry for best picture of the year, this series has stunk too long for the last movie to redeem four years of vampire movies that truly suck. The Twi-hards are entitled to their intense love for either Team Edward or Team Jacob (why no love for Team Charlie, Bella’s dad and the only smart person in the entire series?). Being a lifetime fan of the Friday the 13th and Police Academy series, I know what it’s like to love a cluster of movies that are truly, unapologetically stupid. I was sorry to see Harry Potter go, since

the last of those films was so exceptional. As for Twilight, let’s not kid each other. The Twi-hards won’t have to mourn very long. Meyer is alive and well and Summit Entertainment won’t let the next 10 years go by without the highly heralded return of their monstrously lucrative franchise. There’s no way Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart would turn down $20 million each to star in Son of Twilight or Twilight 9: The Search for More Money. For Pete’s sake, what else is Taylor Lautner going to do? Make no mistake, the producers of these cash cows aren’t stupid and this series will continue onward. The inevitable return of Twilight, and my having to sit through another of these movies, will once again give those Kihei middle schoolers their revenge. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1622f

Horoscope

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) It’s rare when affairs of the heart fall in line with those of the brain. That is, we can often tell what’s best for ourselves, but fail to follow it. You know how it goes: “If only I could fall in love with so and so; they adore me!” This week, miraculously, that isn’t your problem. Count yourself very lucky. Emotion and logic working together is an uncommon and beautiful thing. While you have them both in the same car agreeing on a destination, don’t hesitate. Slam the gas pedal to the floor and go, go go!

minor in patience, despite your initial desire for a double-major in phenomenal success and liberated fame. Although waiting for what you want and then settling for something less isn’t exactly what you had in mind when you enrolled, it seems to be all you’re eligible for now. I don’t need to tell you to grab what you can while you can; you’ve already made that decision. But don’t give up on your high hopes. So you only got into community college this semester. Come Spring, even the Ivy League will be knocking down your door.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) I wish I could consistently heap blessings and benedictions on you, Sag. But I fear shattering my dubious credibility by telling you what you want to hear, even when it’s not probable. Besides, if I did that, it would rob some of the deliciousness from those moments when I can share something positive with you, like this week. Don’t expect the ground to shake or fireworks inside your head—it’s not one of those momentous milestone kind of weeks. But do expect brief little tastes of sweetness from unexpected places—like strangers giving you candy that you want to eat.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) It’s lucky you screwed up; your crush was nearly convinced you were out of their league. S/he’d never aspire to date someone of your apparent perfection; you’d been so successful at disguising your flaws that s/he felt outclassed. Luckily for both of you, you slipped up, revealing your humanity, making you (ironically) all the more perfect for them. It’s not about flaunting your minor imperfections, but don’t bother hiding them. They’re what make you accessible, lovable, and wonderfully real. We don’t want the plastic veneer of the airbrushed you—we want the real skin and bones underneath.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Even though your rivals are lining up to take a swing at you, don’t freak. Let them. It’s good to let your adversaries blow off steam in your direction occasionally. It allows them to vent their emotions before they build to even more unreasonable levels, and you get to check that your own actions and intentions are still on the upand-up. Set up the dunking booth so that those with valid points get what they deserve: to see you take a fall—if only into four feet of water. It’s no biggie; accept the few minor tumbles with grace and you’ll have every right to ask for the same privilege—to be able to investigate and critique your opponents. They probably won’t grant it to you, but it’ll be a long time before those hypocrites come your way looking for trouble again. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) It’s not that you’re not getting enough attention. It’s that you’re getting all the wrong kinds of attention. Perhaps your methods are partly to blame. Who do you think is going to be drawn to you by your flashiest knife-juggling unicycle stunts? There are a lot of amazing people—the kind of people you’d love to be fawning over you—who are eager to be appreciative of your fine sense of adventure. Want the geniuses and stellar elite of the world to notice you? You can run circles around the circles they run in—but first you’ve got to get in. Don’t worry, you absolutely can. First step—shift the tangent of your exploits: less flash, more substance. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Maybe you don’t need this advice. Maybe you’ve already decided to spend Thanksgiving on soft, giant pillows, smoking from a hookah with a group of your best friends. Maybe you’re planning on spending Christmas scuba diving and New Year’s having an intense book discussion circle. You probably already believe in the concept of “more than one way to do things.” Just in case, let me remind you— clinging to tradition is okay, but you’ll get far more out of experimenting with creating new traditions that are tailored to fit the life you want to lead. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Many Aries snored through History classes in high school and college. While I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your disinterest reflects your passionate involvement in the all-important present moment, I’d like to redirect your attention to recent history—let’s say the last five years or so. Ignoring or denying the past isn’t quite the same as simply not dwelling in it. You’d do well to brush up on some relevant facts and dates so you can avoid the harsh mistakes made by other people (and even yourself) before. This week, spend a little time studying. Trust me, the other way to learn this lesson is much, much harder. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) So far this Fall you’ve majored in compromise with a

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) There’s something comforting about bounty. Enter a bakery. Loaves upon golden loaves of steaming, fresh-baked bread infuse you with a serenity you can’t explain—it’s not like you could personally eat most of that bread before it became inedible. But it’s good practice to surround yourself with copiousness, to remind yourself that you exist in an economy of abundance, not scarcity. In case you’ve forgotten, food and money and stuff aside—the things that mean the most to you are available in more than sufficient amounts. That’s right—there’s plenty of love, affection, and sex to go around. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Your request for special treatment hit Fairy Godmother HQ and made a big splash. They thought it was hilarious; within minutes it’d been faxed, Xeroxed and emailed to every division. Even fabled princesses had to obey some rules (“the chariot reverts to pumpkin at midnight”). Your memo demanding an unprecedented extension on your spiritual evolution deadline was funny enough. When you added the bit about needing some leeway on the Love Potion Limit, you had godmothers busting seams and rolling around on the floor knocking over wand stands. But your post-script about desperately needing just one extra wish this year turned tears of hilarity to those of sadness, and prompted this response: “Thanks for all the fun, but if you haven’t figured out this year that you have the power to grant your own wishes, we’re sorry to have failed you so badly.”

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) As much as you’d love to be as uncomplicated and wholesome as a character from a classic family film (and you do manage to pull off the Mary Poppins thing every once in a while) life is simply too messy to let you stay in that mode for long. Besides, it’s unrealistic to expect that of yourself. You can’t be sweet, generous, wise, and optimistic all the time. Trying to would be just as bad as letting yourself wallow too long in one of your more dismal moods. Since you’re likely to run the gamut of outlooks from Pollyanna to Grinch, go with it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You are so lucky, only you don’t know it. I’m not talking the kind of luck where you simply avoid accidents through happy happenstances. I’m referring to discovering the unlocked back door to the local candy factory, finding a winning lottery ticket, or stumbling upon your long-lost stepsister. The only problem is, these things aren’t being presented to you on silver platters or even in your line of sight. The doors and windows of opportunity are opening—once you’ve stepped past them. My only tips: don’t rush, take lots of side-trips, and look over your shoulder as often as possible.
