Talk of the Island

RIP Sen. Inouye

SEN. DANIEL INOUYE PASSES AWAY In a week marked by death and worlds coming to an end, we’d like to discuss the sad passing of U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye. He died at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center of a respiratory ailment at about noon Hawaii time on Dec. 17. He was 88. His last word, reportedly, was “Aloha.” Inouye was severely wounded when fighting with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II and won the Medal of Honor as a result. His seniority in the U.S. Senate granted him the position of President pro tempore, and he’s been representing Hawaii in Washington pretty much forever. First elected to Hawaii’s Territorial Legislature in the early 1950s, he got elected to the U.S. Senate in 1962 when John F. Kennedy was president. Just a week ago, Civil Beat was reporting that Inouye said he wanted to run for reelection again when his current term expires in 2016 (when he would have been 92). To say Inouye played even a huge role in government would be to understate his achievements. As Oahu blogger Ian Lind recalled in a post earlier this week, Inouye played major parts in the Senate’s hearings on both Watergate and the Iran-Contra scandal. But he was no hippie lefty–Inouye also backed President Lyndon Johnson’s escalation of the Vietnam War. But Inouye’s greatest legacy was that of a pork barrel politician. Seriously, the guy was a master at securing bipartisan support for federal earmarks for Hawaii. And there’s no better example of Inouye’s prowess than the H-3 on Oahu. Nicknamed “Danny’s Highway,” the freeway took three decades to build, mostly because of a long string of environmental lawsuits (given the fact that the freeway slashed across some of the island’s most pristine wilderness, this was hardly surprising). But all that ended in 1986 when Inouye got more than three-quarters of his

Senate colleagues to sign on to a special bill exempting the project from future environmental litigation. The H-3 finally opened 11 years later. At the time, the Los Angeles Times reported that the freeway was “25 years late and 18 times more expensive than the original estimate,” but it was open. At the same time, Inouye apparently was one of the few Hawaii politicians of his generation who didn’t see the need to make money off the development of Hawaii. In fact, his name is conspicuously absent from Land and Power in Hawaii, a brutal but extensively reported 1985 takedown by George Cooper and Gavan Daws of the many lines of intersection between Hawaii officials and profitable land development–an absence the authors noted in their book’s conclusion: “In his years in local politics he was quite closely associated with Democrats who worked steadily as developers’ lawyers and who themselves invested in real estate development through huis,” the authors wrote. “And in the early days of rezonings around Diamond Head, he himself for a time represented one of the developers. But over the years he apparently invested very little in real estate.” Inouye’s passing means means there are huge power vacuums in both Washington and Hawaii. Even imaging Hawaii without

Inouye must be giving Democrats across the state jitters. In the 24 hours after his death, my inbox flooded with condolence emails from all manner of government officials, including Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa (“He has always championed the interests of Hawai‘i’s people”), state Senate President Shan Tsutsui (“we have lost a true American hero”), the GLBT Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawaii (“the entire country lost a statesman and a honorable politician”), University of Hawaii President M. R. C. Greenwood (“He was our most distinguished graduate”) and even U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar (“Danny’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched over his eight decades of service to the nation he loved and cherished”). The monsoon of condolences and accolades was hardly a surprise, given Inouye’s reputation as a virtual kingmaker in Hawaii. It was an open secret that those who coveted high office in Hawaii needed his blessing. Ed Case is one of the few Democrats who openly crossed him (by running against Senator Akaka in 2006) and it’s probably no coincidence that Case hasn’t gotten close to elected office since. The question now before us is who will succeed Inouye. State law requires Governor Neil Abercrombie (who openly wept when delivering his condolences the night Inouye died) to appoint a Democrat, who will hold the seat until a special election in 2014 formally elects a successor. Of the possible candidates, Case is probably the most qualified, but given that Inouye reportedly left deathbed instructions that Abercrombie appoint Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa to the seat, it’s doubtful he’ll get anywhere near it. In any case, Civil Beat says that if Abercrombie appoints the successor before Jan. 3, that person will become the new Senior Senator from Hawaii.

This caused all the bother?

Hey, if it makes you feel better, the world ends every day for someone. On Dec. 14, it ended for more than two dozen people (most of them small children) in a Newtown, CT school. That morning their parents packed them lunches and helped them with the last-minute spelling homework and kissed them goodbye and went on with their day, not realizing that their little child’s world was about to end in useless violence. If you have children, then even if you lived way out here in Hawaii, your weekend probably included at least one pretty anxious, nervous family discussion about whether that kind of thing could ever happen here. The news vans were still rolling into Newtown when Hawaii schools superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi put out this slightly reassuring, slightly nerve-wracking statement: “All of Hawaii’s public schools have emergency procedures in place and today our teams revisited those procedures with a heightened awareness,” she said in a Dec. 14 press release. “While this tragedy is incomprehensible, all of our schools have counseling services available for students, parents, and teachers who may need them.” Like it or not, this is the world that didn’t end on Dec. 21. Mass shootings, though still very rare, are part of the norm in the United States. Most people who are murdered in this country don’t die in such huge spectacles, but they do happen. “Newtown wasn’t a tragedy,” Stephen Marche wrote on Esquire’s blog on Dec. 17. “Newtown was a policy decision.” Cold blooded, perhaps. But true. Having the world end because of some cartoonish prophecy was a cheap and easy solution to horrors like Newtown. But it didn’t work, and now we need to think. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1627n1

UH Maui Professor Keola Donaghy

MICROSOFT BRINGS HAWAIIAN TO YOUR KEYBOARD Typing in Hawaiian can be tricky. Have you ever tried to find the okina key on your keyboard? Lucky for us, Microsoft has acknowledged this fact and their most recent launch of Windows 8 includes support for the Hawaiian language. They did this with help from the University of Hawaii’s Keola Donaghy, a faculty member at our very own UH Maui College’s music department. The project was a joint effort between Microsoft and Ka Haka ‘Ula O Ke’elikolani College of Hawaiian Language, located at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, where Donaghy formerly held a position. The Windows 8 software offers a Hawaiian keyboard layout with many fonts that contain the diacritical marks essential for typing in Hawaiian. You can also tune your calendar to show days of the week and months in Hawaiian. “We’re getting close to the day that Hawaiian speakers will be able to take for granted the fact that they can simply type in Hawaiian when they buy a new computer, tablet or smartphone without installing special software,” says Donaghy. This is just in time for the new Hawaiian Studies associate degree that began this fall at University of Hawaii Maui College. The department has four professors: Kiope Raymond, Associate Professor (B.A. Hawaiian Studies, MEd Education); S. Kaleikoa Ka‘eo, Assistant Professor (B.A. Hawaiian Studies, MA Political Science); Kahele Dukelow, Assistant Professor (B.A. Hawaiian Studies, MEd Education); and Papaikani‘au Kai‘anui, Instructor (B.A. Hawaiian Language, PhD Education). The school hires lecturers as needed to meet the student demand. “This degree has been long-awaited by Maui County residents,” says Ka‘eo, who teaches Hawaiian studies. “But it

will benefit all students seeking a deeper understanding of Native Hawaiian culture and history, and is a pathway to any four-year degree.” The course load includes Hawaiian Studies 107, which exposes the students to the unique aspects of Hawaii’s geography, cultural origins, art, history and religion, and Hawaiian studies 190V–Hawaiian Consciencism. The program uses student engagement with community partners in farming, politics, art and traditional practices. With UH Maui College serving a rural area with a high percentage of Native Hawaiians on Maui and Molokai, the school is moving closer to satisfying its goals of being a leading indigenous serving institution. It also helps support the advancement of Hawaiian culture and knowledge. “This degree is similar to the A.A in Liberal Arts in that it’s a transfer degree,” says Dukelow. “The degree prepares students to enter a wide variety of four-year programs including Hawaiian Language and Hawaiian Studies.” Microsoft teaming up to provide the technology necessary to compute in Hawaiian is a big step in the same direction of perpetuating Hawaiian language and recognizing the significance of the unique language and culture of this archipelago. “Providing technology support in a native language is critical to helping people access the tools they need to create better economic opportunities,” says Anthony Salcito, Vice President of Worldwide Education for Microsoft. “Language preservation and support also helps preserve cultural identities for the next generation of learners.”

erating in Hawaii since 1959, but this is their first Maui store. You will find a nice, big location with used clothing, furniture, accessories, housewares, bedding and jewelry. In addition, their new partnership with Maui Disposal will make it easier than ever to keep recycling and reusable commodities out of the landfill. “We are extremely appreciative of Maui Disposal for choosing to partner with us,” says Amanda Stevens, Communications Manager for Goodwill Industries. “Together, we provide Maui residents with a ‘One Stop’ opportunity to recycle and donate their gently used items to Goodwill supporting our job placement and job training programs in Maui and throughout the state of Hawaii. Donations support Goodwill’s 501(c)(3) non-profit mission–to help people with employment barriers to reach their full potential and become self-sufficient.” Goodwill has been working with Honolulu Disposal and Honolulu Recovery for the past 15 years, so naturally when they opened up shop on Maui they thought about working out a partnership with Maui Disposal. They are still negotiating whether dropping off your cans and bottles will result in donated monies to Goodwill, but they say it could happen. “There is an opportunity for Goodwill to receive donated monies from HI5 commodities redeemed which is being discussed with Maui Disposal,” says Stevens. “These certified HI5 redemption/ donation centers are open for customers to redeem their HI5 recyclables as well as get paid top dollar for other recyclable material such as; copper, aluminum, brass and stainless steel. Cardboard, newspaper and plastic can also be recycled using the drop-boxes located at each location.” The donation centers have drop-off spots in Kihei and Wailuku. At the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, they have an attended location for drop-off. Goodwill Industries

does not do pick-ups. You can also bring donations to the store location. Goodwill’s partnerships have been so successful on Oahu they have a partnership with Dell Computers that provides computer technology recycling for island residents. They hope to also offer this program on Maui in the near future. Dell and the Environmental Protection Agency recently signed an agreement encouraging better recycling solutions for electronics alongside of a new national strategy aimed at recycling friendly designs by the electronics industry. On Oahu, the partnership with Goodwill and Dell plans to collect 60,000 pounds of e-waste and keep it out of the landfill. For more information on how to recycle your computer, visit Earth911.com. For more information on their current recycling programs, call 808-836-0313, email Goodwill at info@higoodwill.org, check out @GoodwillHawaii on Twitter, TheGoodwillHunter.com blog and Goodwill Industries of Hawaii on Facebook. HAIR LIP Plastic surgeons in Turkey and France told CNN in November that mustache implants have suddenly surged in popularity as Middle Eastern men use their increased lip bushiness to convey power and prestige. Surgeons extract follicles from hairier parts of the body in procedures that cost the equivalent of around $7,000 and show full results in about six months. An anthropology professor told CNN that, by tradition in Arab countries, a man of honor would “swear on my mustache,” use mustaches as collateral for loans, shave off a vanquished foe’s mustache as a reward and gravely insult enemies with “Curse be upon your mustache!”

At the religious festival of Pon, thousands of Muslims travel to Gunung Kemukus, on Indonesia’s main island of Java, to have the required sexual intercourse with a stranger. The experience, which supposedly brings good fortune, has become heavily commercialized, but nevertheless, about half the participants are “pure,” in that no money changes hands. More than a quick tryst is involved, according to an October Global Mail dispatch. The pilgrims must first pray, then bathe themselves, then select their proper stranger, then bathe themselves afterward (carefully saving the water for later re-use), and finally return seven times at 35-day intervals to refresh their ritual.

For centuries, some residents of India’s Madhya Pradesh state have allowed themselves to be trampled by garishly dressed animals in periodic attempts to have their prayers answered. The November “Ekadashi” (the 11th day of certain months of the Hindu calendar) this year began with prayers, followed by the liquoring up of the animals (cows in Ujjain and buffaloes in Bhopal, for example) to “remove their inhibitions,” according to a WebIndia123 report. Even so, according to local press reports, hardly anyone ever gets hurt.

THINGS PEOPLE BELIEVE Personalities are heavily influenced by blood types, according to the Japanese. People with Type A blood are thought to be “sensitive perfectionists and good team players, but over-anxious,” according to a November BBC News dispatch, while O’s are “curious and generous but stubborn.” Some industries market bloodtype-specific products ranging from soft drinks to condoms. And names given by their parents heavily influence a person’s fortunes in life, according to many Thais,

but that means relief from misery is just an official name-change away, according to a November Wall Street Journal dispatch from Bangkok. Services-for-fee are available to help find prosperous names, with one smartphone application suggesting five for the equivalent of about $10.

SAUDIS REMAIN FREEDOM-CHALLENGED In September, officials in Jeddah detained 908 female Nigerian visitors who were not accompanied by appropriate male guardians as required for all females in the kingdom under age 45. (Women older than that are allowed merely to carry notarized permission slips from husbands, sons or brothers.) That the Nigerians were in the country only to make the required Muslim Hajj pilgrimage did not deter Saudi authorities. And Saudi immigration officials in November began a text-messaging service to notify husbands if a woman attempts to leave the country (at an airport or across a border) without the official “yellow sheet” authorizing her departure.

MEETING CHOPSTICK DEMAND Japanese and Chinese traditions absolutely reject the idea of reusing wooden chopsticks, and for many years Japan’s (and then, China’s) forests easily met chopstick demand. But Japan requires 23 billion pairs a year, and China 63 billion, which the wood industry (even China’s) eventually could not provide. In 2011, Korean-born Jae Lee built a factory in Americus, Ga., near forests of poplar and sweet gum trees that proved the ideal combination of softness and hardness for the sticks. In 2011 and early 2012, he supplied Japanese, Chinese and Koreans with 20 million pairs of “Made in U.S.A.” chopsticks every week. (In June, Georgia Chopsticks LLC was inexplicably closed by court order, even though its sales had remained brisk.)

QUESTIONABLE PRODUCT LAUNCHES The Demeter Fragrance Library (maker of such “classic” scents as “Dirt,” “Crayon” and “Laundromat”) has added to its line with “Sushi” cologne, reported the website FoodBeast.com in November. Fortunately, the scent is not that of raw fish, but “cooked sticky rice,” seaweed, ginger and lemon essences. And a company called Beverly Hills Caviar recently installed three vending machines in the Los Angeles area that sell nothing but varieties of caviar, ranging from pink mother of pearl ($4) to Imperial River Beluga ($500 an ounce). ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1627n3

ust wanted to thank the thief who ruined my vibe on my morning beach jog. I left my Nikes by a coconut tree, and was a victim of theft on the beach in front of the Honua Kai Resort. The next day, the very same thing happened, though this time my slippahs were gone. I’ve been doing this morning routine for years and I never thought that this would happen on Maui–especially at 5am. What is happening to our paradise? Can’t I exercise and meditate with peace of mind anymore? It’s very upsetting. ■

HOW WILL THE CLOSING OF FRONT STREET & KUKUI MALL THEATERS AFFECT THOSE ON MAUI WHO LOVE MOVIES? BY BARRY WURST II 10 DECEMBER 20, 2012

F

or faithful film buffs, a movie theater is like an old friend, a place with lingering memories that go beyond a night of cinematic escape and popcorn consumption. Despite the always rising popularity of home entertainment and the increase of streaming options, movie theaters remain a place to experience pop and world culture with an audience of film lovers, a weekend destination for a first or 3,000th date and in a theater that offers nostalgia for the films, our friends and the good times they gave us. Maui just recently lost two of its oldest movie theaters, the Kukui Mall Theatres in Kihei and the Front Street Theater in Lahaina, reliable film destinations since the 1990s whose loss is felt for its longtime patrons. The closing of these two standbys in the same season is a shocker, especially since both were approaching two decades of operation. I was there when both of these theaters opened and, like any longtime Maui movie buff, have a flood of great memories attached to both of these wonderful movie houses. The Kukui Mall Theatres was the first movie multiplex on Maui’s Southside (the first ever multi-screen movie theater on Maui is Lahaina’s Wharf Cinema, which opened in 1989). Among its opening roster in 1992 was Bram Stoker’s Dracula, A Few Good Men and the forgotten Eddie Murphy vehicle The Distinguished Gentlemen, which was the first movie I ever saw there. The following year, I stood in line for two hours in front of the Kukui theater so I could attend a free, packed screening of Robert Altman’s three hour epic, Short Cuts. I also took my mom with me to their opening night screening of Jurassic Park, which caused her to nearly crush my arm from the fright it gave her. The Front Street Theater had a memorable opening night in the fall of 1994: I was there with a cluster of high school buddies and attended a showing of the Kevin Costner drama, The War. In the middle of the showing, the sound cut out for five minutes and, to tell you the truth, I’m still not sure the ending made total sense to me, due to the temporary sound loss. But it was the night my buddy Shea introduced

Front Street Theater

me to Mochi Crunch, which is now my movie theater snack of choice. Front Street and Kukui Mall often had screenings of alternative fare and art films that, prior to the First Light film fest, rarely played on Maui. I remember seeing Woody Allen films and the locally made Picture Bride in those theaters, which catered to art movie lovers as often as they entertained summer movie audiences. Now, with only four theaters remaining, the choices seem smaller, particularly for Kihei audiences, who have the Maui Film Festival in June but now have to travel to Lahaina or Kahului to see first-run attractions. I spoke with the manager of another Maui movie theater, who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s always sad when a theater closes,” said the manager. “It’s sad for a community when a theater closes down, especially in places like Kihei and Lahaina, where it’s not readily accessible to get to a theater. The nice thing is, we’ll have more guests in Kahului. I didn’t see any of this coming at all. This was a surprise for both theaters, for sure.” When I asked what the recent closings will mean for Maui’s filmgoers, he was generally optimistic. “I think it means there is now a greater opportunity for locals to go to a theater that is catered to them, which is a plus for anybody,” he said. “The opportunity for people in Kihei to experience a bigger theater, a different theater, is always nice.

Kukui Mall Theater

The regional manager of Consolidated Theaters (the company that oversaw the Kukui Mall and Front Street theaters) never returned my calls requesting a comment. Richard Crawford offered a unique perspective. He was co-manager of the Holiday Theatres (a movie house formerly in the Ka’ahumanu Shopping Center) for 20

“With the island having limited access to entertainment, aside from the beach, Mai Tais and so on, it’s something Maui residents needed and it’s unfortunate that they closed them,” I will say the opportunity for more Maui residents to experience a top quality theater like, for example, the Maui Mall Megaplex, will be beneficial for filmgoers. For those that don’t travel beyond Kihei or Lahaina, it will be nice for them to come see what a theater in Kahului is like.”

years and also managed the Maui Theatre (which closed in 1996), both formerly in Kahului. At one point, these two were Maui’s only movie theaters. “With the island having limited access to entertainment, aside from the beach, Mai Tais and so on, it’s something Maui residents needed and it’s unfortunate that they closed them,” Crawford said. “It’s something that is a part of our culture. Whether it’s on our island or Massachusetts, it’s unfortunate.” What about the fierce competition theaters have been facing with Netflix and at-home streaming options? Still, Crawford wasn’t concerned. “Film is a form of entertainment that people enjoy,” he said. “It’s an entertainment that will be around for my children’s children children. A form of entertainment that Hawaiians enjoy. Entertainment is a part of the culture. Though it’s pricey, it will be around a long time.” Crawford has a point. Film has proven so durable that even threats during the early years of cinema, particularly television, haven’t taken away the lure of the social experience of going out to the movies. Maui currently has four movie theaters remaining. The oldest, the Wharf Cinemas in Lahaina, has three screens, is going on 23 years and remains a durable class act. Queen Ka’ahumanu Shopping Center’s

18-year old theater (where, in full disclosure, I used to work as an usher) has six screens and is ideally located in one of the island’s finest shopping centers. So is the Maui Mall Theater, which has more screens than a spider has legs and offers the latest in digital projection. What’s more, Oahu is no longer the only Hawaiian island that gets all the good art movies, Oscar contenders and movies not starring Vin Diesel. The First Light Film Festival, taking place right now at the Castle/Maui Arts and Cultural Center, gives Maui audiences a look at the biggest movies of the season, many of which are weeks, even months, away from their nationwide release. Then there’s the Maui Film Festival, which annually offers an eclectic mix of art films, studio fare, local discoveries and unbeatable outdoor seating for many of the selections. It’s unfortunate that we’re two theaters short, but Maui still has a cluster of great theaters and the variety of movie choices is broader than it once was. Still, both the Kukui Mall and the Front Street theaters will be missed. They were long appreciated island mainstays that were host to countless patrons and thousands of movies. I always enjoyed strolling down to the end of the Front Street boardwalk to see what was playing at the Theater and can’t imagine the curving stretch in front of the Kukui Mall Theater not being a gallery of movie posters. And I’m grateful for the workers who faithfully staffed both theaters over the years and gave me and so many of the island’s film fans many a night to remember. Despite the loss of two longstanding Maui movie houses, locals, tourists and everyone else should be encouraged that going to the movies is still one of the best sources of entertainment and a communal experience like no other. Maui has some of the best theaters in Hawaii. The ushers are standing by, ready to tear your ticket and hand you your box of Mochi Crunch. ■ editor@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1627L

In The Flesh How Murray Thorne, Scott Johnson and Keith Langlois do Pink Floyd’s 'The Wall' BY JEN RUSSO

ost everyone seems to have gone through a Pink Floyd phase. The Wall is one of those incredible albums with universal appeal, if not for the music then for the way Pink Floyd created something truly groundbreaking. Likewise, the movie aimed to go where no other music-inspired film had gone before, and while it left the band unsatisfied, it justifiably became a cult hit. Add an unprecedented stadium show, and it’s pretty clear how Pink Floyd really made its impression on the generation growing up during the 1980s. Of course, I wasn’t one of those people. I listened to the album, the show never made it to Maui and I never got to watch the movie until at least a decade after its release. But I will be there to see Murray Thorne’s solo acoustic version of that music, complete with theatrical lighting by Epic Lighting and an original, accompanying film by Thorne, all showing at Stella Blues on Thursday and Friday. The show is more than a tribute to The Wall. In fact, Thorne says he doesn’t want you to think of it as a tribute show. “I decided to play solo to further my challenge,” he says. “It has pushed my boundaries of selection. I thought, ‘How do I play the trial?’ If I would’ve put together a band, then it would’ve really been a tribute more than my own interpretation. Pink Floyd’s sound is so unique that I’m not trying to copy it.”

The concept for the show was born out of Pink chemistry between Thorne and Keith Langlois that first appeared when they were working on the 2011 Zeptember show at Mulligan’s on the Blue. Langlois’ company Epic Lighting has been creating theatrical lighting environments on the island, and Thorne is a well-known musician on Maui, both as a solo artist and as the front man for the Celtic Tigers. Together they make up some of the island’s biggest Floyd aficionados. Later, they teamed up with Scott Johnson of Dogtowne Designs to plan “In the Flesh,” which has been in the works for the last nine months or so. “I would always throw in a Floyd song or two, and The Wall was always a favorite,” Thorne says. “One night that was really dead while I was playing solo I did a complete set of Pink Floyd. Creating this show is an exhibition of Floyd, with all the bells and whistles. I never had the means, but with this joint effort I feel so lucky to be doing this.” The show itself promises to be so compelling that you don’t even need to be a Floyd fan. The boys are creating one of the most interactive, visually exploratory and theatrical shows Maui has seen. Langois’ talents precede him, having worked on the touring arena circuit with various celebrity acts. “Keith Langois can spin the room with his lights,” says Johnson. “Epic is also a green lighting company, using LED lights, which brings it to a new level. You can literally put lights anywhere. Keith is a composer on the light board. His instrument in this performance is the light board.” continued on page 15

Art & Entertainment continued from page 13 In the Flesh will have 360 degrees of concert lighting that will surround the audience, creating a more interactive surrounding that’s comparable to the stadium shows The Wall was known for. The private setting at Stella Blues has allowed the team a controlled environment to pour the show into your senses. Thorne created the original video that will be projected during the show. “At first I thought I would have someone do the video, but then I realized the whole thing was in my head!” says Thorne. “I had to learn Final Cut, find the images I wanted, incorporate old film footage. It’s my story of Pink, song by song. The war story is a big part of it.” The team brought in Bennett Yashon from Event Horizons to project the film onto the large screen. Adding another dimension is the Stella Blues dinner theater itself: three fabulous courses served while violin virtuoso Wenlu Duffy warms up the crowd. For those catching the show only, a prime intermission menu will be available, too. “There haven’t been any corners cut in creating this show,” says Johnson. “We sacrificed nothing. The video is spot on. I can’t wait to see the audience react to it. We are all really happy with what we have put together. It’s going to go right up to Wednesday night with ‘How can we make this incredible?’ People will walk away with their minds blown, thinking we’ve never seen anything like this.” The Wall sold more than 11.5 million albums in the US as of 1999 and was one of the best selling albums in 1980.

Released in November 1980, it spent 15 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts. Rolling Stone named the album number 87 in its list of the top 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. But Pink Floyd nearly imploded after the album, huge stadium shows and movie became such a phenomenon of the ‘80s. In fact, after Roger Waters and Richard Wright left the band in the mid-80s, it took more than two decades for them to perform together on stage again. The contribution Pink Floyd’s The Wall gave the music world may have been at the expense of the artists involved, but those making “In the Flesh” hope to show a new inspiration and interpretation of the classic. “It’s a personal story we can all relate to,” says Thorne. “We all build our wall around ourselves. That’s the message. Especially in this internet generation we really do it tenfold. We don’t even have to see each other in this digital world, and the war theme from the 80s remains important and significant to this day.” Tickets are available for both nights by calling Stella Blues at 808-874-3779. You can purchase tickets for the dinner show that starts at 6pm for $60 or for the show only at 7 pm for $30. Check Facebook. com and search for “In the Flesh” for more intimate details. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E news, visit MauiTime’s events blog at: mauivents.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1627d2

Funny People This Is 40 is sort of a sequel to Knocked Up BY BARRY WURST II

This Is 40 ★★★★★ Rated R / 134 Min.

J

udd Apatow continues to expand on his brand of comedy, giving us films that are deeper, more risk taking and edgy in their humor than The 40-Year Old Virgin. I’m a big fan of his dark, not easy to like but truly hilarious Funny People and felt The Five Year Engagement, which he produced and was released this year, was underrated. His most famous film as a director is arguably Knocked Up, which this is a “sort-of” sequel to. It stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, reprising their roles as a seemingly always-fighting couple whose constant battles to keep their children in line have made them become big, unruly kids themselves. This isn’t the first time Apatow has cast his wife, Mann, in his films and his two adorable daughters, Maude and Iris, plays her children, making it hard to de-

termine how much or how little of this is autobiographical. Whether you know most of the Apatow clan is in the cast or not, the casting works, as Mann, a scene stealing wonder in all of his films and his children have ace comic timing and the acting chops to make even the more serious moments feel true. For some, the level of honesty on display will cut deep. It did for me, as I recognized aspects of my own marriage and found it comforting to laugh at things that I thought only I was going through. Rudd’s Pete is trying to keep his music producer job and company afloat but finds that pop music of the 21st century is more geared to young girls, a loaded satirical point that pays off with many scenes exploring the generational gap in musical tastes. Mann’s Debbie is also struggling with her clothing store business, but for a different reason–her store is run by two wildly contrasting women, a carefree sexpot (Megan Fox, who still can’t act) and an elfin co-worker who accuses the other of stealing (played by Charlene Yi, who’s hysterical). It’s also great to see John Lithgow

Just like real life.

finally given a role of real depth after years of tiny parts in unworthy films. Playing Mann’s neglectful father, he has great moments but his character’s big change of heart feels rushed. Albert Brooks is fantastic as Rudd’s responsibility-free Dad and “Bridesmaid” scene stealers Chris O’Dowd and Melissa McCarthy once again hijack the movie whenever they’re on screen. But there is a lack of tidiness in the writing, as well as Apatow’s tendency to resort to crass humor to balance out the tougher moments. Still, if this is his most personal film yet, he’s looking at a film legacy that would put him in line with Mel Brooks, as his films are almost always reliably hilarious. The sequence that burns the deepest

for me is when Pete and Debbie take a weekend getaway to be alone and savor hours of being alone and away from their kids. Once they get back home and in the door, the linger of their romantic time off pops like a soap bubble and they’re right back keeping their daughters from killing one another. There is an honesty here that is startling as well as mercilessly funny. Rudd is always good (don’t believe me? Look at his debut film, Halloween 6–even in that turkey, he’s solid!) but Mann deserves award consideration for her work. She was worthy for her turn in Funny People but what she does here is even more difficult and just as special. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1627f

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) In his incredible essay, “Stickeen,” John Muir described his adventures with an inscrutable little dog by that name, who, after crossing an immense glacial crevasse on a precarious ice bridge in Alaska, suddenly became the most transparent and loving creature he’d ever known. He chronicled the dog’s transformation from enigma to familiar. I know you crave the mysterious unknown. Unknowable doesn’t equal valuable, however. Sometimes the best things in your life are those right under your nose, the ones you think you know through and through. They have value—partly because of your deep understanding of them, but also in part because of the surprises they still hold in store. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Would it be accurate for me to describe you as spiritually hungry? This would explain the powerful cravings I witness you suffering; the deep-seated yearnings before which you tumble like a discarded, empty plastic bag buoyed upon a strong wind. Practicality can hardly howl over the gusty exhortations of your soul desires. In fact, it may be holding you back. If you’re not feeling satisfied crossing items off your lists or fulfilling responsibilities, stop doing it—at least until you’ve had a taste of the flavor that promises to fill you up, whatever it is. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Aquarians love freedom as much as Leos adore romance and Virgos, order. Somehow, ironically, they often end up more intimately entangled then most Lions and live more structured lives than any Virgo. Why? Is it the law of contrasts (without darkness there can be no light)? I think so. Without some clingy, demanding relationship to strain against, or the strictures of an exacting, systemized lifestyle, you’d never be able to recognize, let alone appreciate, the exciting moments of freedom you actually live for. Keep that in mind when you fly out of the cage this week: this is one of those moments. When it’s over, you’ll finally understand why the place you’re most inclined to return to is the trap you just escaped from. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) I had a dream last night in which I exorcised evil spirits from the bodies of my friends by feeding them fresh-baked cookies (made from store-bought dough) that I’d consecrated. I was the white trash shaman, blessing the whole trailer park with specially sanctified tapwater and baskets of wonder bread and frozen fish sticks. The demons weren’t happy, though. Vanquished into their televisions, they swatted against the glass with entertaining and ineffective abandon. The lesson I’d like to share: don’t sweat the tools you use, or the methods. If they get the job done—more power to you.

more bearable when it actually has meaning, dignified with truth. Don’t hide it or hide behind it. Just tell it.

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions from page 4

1: A–Energy and Natural Affairs, Judiciary and Veterans Affairs. 2: E–Some amount less than $50,000. 3: C–Marcus Oshiro.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) When a horse breaks a leg, it’s put down. Since they apparently can’t recover, they’re euthanized. Whether this is truly appropriate I’m not qualified to say, but I will say you’re slightly monstrous for wanting to end the life of your ______(fill in the blank: job, relationship, newfound attitude, etc…) so prematurely. Here the poor thing is, tottering around on shaky legs like a baby deer, and you shoot it in the head for not being able to keep up with your galloping pace. Slow down and give Bambi a chance to grow up. He’ll thank you later when his (ahem) antlers have grown in. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Aw, you can take it, you tough thing. A little ribbing and bruising is only like flint to your steely shell: sparks are liable to fly. Can’t you see criticism as the strengthhoning influence it is? Never mind. I stand among the vast majority of folk who secretly admires (and even worships) your volatile power—but is scared to say so, for fear of risking your scorn or getting a prick from your sharp tongue because you think we’re patronizing you. We’re not. Take everything at face value this week, especially the compliments. You rock. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) For every gray hair you pull, two more grow in its place, supposedly. It’s pointless and ineffective trying to deny your age, or resist it. Why should you? You tend to age well, becoming more attractive as your experience and self-knowledge grow. Leos that use facelifts and dye jobs to hide their maturity are selling themselves short. In fact, let me tell you a little secret: your best bet at getting what you want this week (whether it’s sex, love, or money) is by flaunting your age, or even exaggerating it. So go ahead; draw on a few extra crows’ feet. You never know what they might get you. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) In such a mad rush to grow old and wise, you dyed your hair silver, wore glasses (for show only), and adopted odd, unnecessary mannerisms (like that flamboyant cane or the repulsively stinky cigar-smoking). While I appreciate and admire your earnest desire for wisdom and enlightenment, there’s a problem with your methods. Ultimately, no amount of deep thinking, book learning, or play-acting can replace the truest source of wisdom: experience. And some experiences can only happen to you when you’re naïve enough to allow them. So be young and stupid while you can. There’ll be time enough to be cynical, crotchety and wise later on. And if you don’t let yourself be idiotic and trusting now, you’ll kick yourself then, when you realize how moronic that is.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) I’ve witnessed dancers who can put their legs behind their own heads, and politicians who’ll change their convictions depending on what song their clock-radio wakes them to that morning. I believe you’d benefit from lessons by these pliable experts. No one wants you to become as wishy-washy as a Libra or as malleable as a Pisces. But if you could postpone making decisions or taking action until you’ve at least considered the facts and opinions of those involved, we’d all appreciate it. By the way, when choosing between physical or mental versatility, consider this: a flexible mind is more certain to improve your sex life than the ability to put your legs behind your head.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) I have no qualms about manipulating you, Puppetmaster. You’re the expert at getting people to do what you want—often believing it’s their own idea. For all I know, my attempted stratagems regarding you are exactly what you intended when you plotted my next move. Thus, I’ve given up on the idea of subtlety. I know you can see right through me and anyone who attempts any kind of ruse, so I opt for the up-front, completely frank approach. Ironically, since the person you’re trying to outmaneuver is easily your equal, you’d benefit from the same approach. When trying to get what you want this week, try this novel approach: ask for it, straight up.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) It’s you or them these days. That is, you’re either making yourself crazy or driving someone else insane, pleasing yourself or your friends (but not both), and suffering or inflicting pain. Oh woe. Is there no middle ground? Unfortunately, no—unless you somehow conquer your persistent allergy to the truth. Will the truth set you free? No. That’s idealistic bull. But your insanity should diminish when you’re no longer obsessed with juggling cons and lies. Honesty may not please anyone, but any pleasure derived from its absence was phony anyway. Finally, unavoidable pain is much

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You can never really know what’s going on behind someone’s eyes. You’d think you, of all people, would know that all too well, since you’re the monarch of inscrutability. However, you all too often seem to believe you can read someone like a book—but you’re mistaken. What’s lurking in their unknowable brain can only truly be found out by…asking (and sometimes not even then). What you’re reading is your own imagination, which has no bearing on reality in this case. While this can yield insight into someone—that someone is you, not the person you think you’re deciphering.
