And now, we present the year in MauiTime hate letters. Well, excerpts of hate letters, to be exact. As we’ve done in the past, here are the choices examples of vitriol, criticism, negativity and just plain meanness that we’ve run in our Feedback section, all strung together into one long paragraph of uninterrupted, unmitigated, undeniable anger. We do this for a simple reason: it is fun. No one wants to read accolades, right? But hate letters, especially when personal and insulting, are much more fun. Enjoy!
M
y God, it’s like the MT staff got wasted on eggnog at the last moment and barely managed to coherently compile the article!... At best, it’s a fluff piece that nobody will take seriously... I would much rather see you use your voice for education over sensationalizing half-truths, rumors and lies... Your cover photo and inside photo is pretty tasteless. Mind Body Spirit on this isle is so much more than two haole girls in a sexual/spiritual “artistic” pose taken by a mainland douche girl. Very disappointing to see MauiTime stoop so low... It is disgusting. It is pornography... I’d like to let you know that your January 26, 2012 front cover page is very offending and distasteful, un-tasty and just weird... You shouldn’t have the word “Maui” on your newspaper if you’re going to do that kind of stuff... Contrary to MauiTime’s heretical accusations, my support for HB 2742 has nothing to do with “hidden agendas and secret lobbying,” or an aversion to quorum requirements or properly noticed agendas... So Anthony wants to be snooty about hostess bars? Please watch your attitude... It would
be nice to have people who are a bit more informed and less juvenile in their presentation cover someone of the caliber of David Icke. This was painful to read and full of misinformation... Why do you pick on Oprah?... You think she’s gonna read your trash and give? You have only hurt our island with your words... But seriously, though, keep your petty asinine ridiculous little opinions to yourself, don’t embarrass us all by making it seem like all of Maui is backing you up... Don’t cry for me Pignataro!... Your text seemed to imply that breasts are like mountains. I can only venture a guess that the copy was written by a man... I am appalled that your newspaper would list Big Beach as the “Best Swimming Beach”... In any case (pun intended), luckily this election is near an end, since Mr. Pignataro has apparently been unable to write about anything other than how Ed Case is a non-entity in the race. Unfortunately, his near obsession with doing so suggests exactly the opposite... We can continue to focus on a time period where things weren’t working, as the MauiTime article does, or we can choose instead to celebrate change and success... You ought to be ashamed
of your one-sided letters to the editor article. Must have taken all of three minutes to write the intro and avoid any other complications associated with such skillful editorial work. Be a man, state your agenda at the beginning of your article... Best to keep your skills where they belong. Isolated in the Pacific Ocean. I respected the MauiTime. No more... [T]he Oct. 4, 2012 cover photo was extreme offensive. How sad that MauiTime would parody the famous Iwo Jima Memorial honoring fallen Marines. Not even MauiTime can spin this cover photo to be anything but what it is, an attempt to put the LGBTQ on equal footing with the tens of thousands of brave Americans who have fought and made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us, including LGBTQ... Is there a reason why the cover photo is one big sausage fest?... Your article contained some meaningful information, but was overshadowed by your insensitivity, which came off as arrogant... Do you actually read and investigate both sides of a story, or do you just “wing it?” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1628n1

The head of the Perse School in Cambridge, England, recently instituted a “10-Second Rule” for minor disciplinary infractions: Students could avoid punishment if they quickly produced a clever explanation for their misbehavior. “Getting children to talk their way out of a tight corner in a very short period of time” said Ed Elliott, encourages creativity and could produce a generation of British entrepreneurs. Said a supporter, “Often the ones who get further are the artful dodgers” who “bend the truth.” (Elliott warned, though, that “out-and-out falseness” would not be tolerated.)
A Tampa, Fla., mother and daughter (ages 56 and 22, with their familial ties verified by a Huffington Post reporter), shoot scenes together for their pornography website (“The Sexxxtons”), including threesomes with a man, but the women insist that they never incestuously touch each other. And Tiffany Hartford, 23, and George Sayers Jr., 48, were charged in Bethel, Conn., in December with selling unauthorized videos of Hartford having sex with another woman. That other woman charged, and a DNA test confirmed, that Sayers is Hartford’s father and that the two have a baby (although both deny knowing they were father-daughter at the time they had sex).
TRUE GAMBLING JUNKIES Sheriff ’s officials in Deerfield Beach, Fla., arrested nine people in October and charged them in connection with a betting ring that set point spreads
and took bets not only on pro and college games but on kids’ games of the South Florida Youth Football League. Six thousand children play in the 22team association.
TOO SILLY TO BE TRUE Police in Geraldton, Australia, reported in November that they had captured a thief they were chasing in the dark through a neighborhood’s backyards. As the thief came to a fence and leaped over it, he happened to land on a family’s trampoline and was propelled backward, practically into cops’ laps.
INCREDIBLE! Deputy NYPD Commissioner Paul Browne told reporters in November that, in the 24 hours of Monday, Nov. 26, not a single criminal shooting, stabbing, or slashing was reported in New York’s five boroughs. Browne said no police official could remember such a day, ever. In fact, the city is on track to finish 2012 with fewer than 400 homicides–compared to the record year of 1990, when 2,245 people were murdered.
THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENT IN DETROIT Detroit police chief Ralph Godbee was suspended in October after an affair with a subordinate became public. Godbee’s predecessor had been fired for the same reason (among other reasons), and in fact, Godbee had previously had an affair with the same subordinate who had been implicated with his predecessor. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1628n2

You want to fight a 66 yearold-man? Your parents should be ashamed of who they raised. I will pray for you, but mostly that a wheel comes off your skateboard and you fall on your ugly face. 2012
o much for the world not ending last week. I know. What a bummer. Can you think of a better way to fix climate change, the rise of dangerous fungi and antibiotic resistant bacteria, soul-crushing poverty, nuclear proliferation, terrorism, the ruinous drug war, Michael Bay movies, government debt, ocean acidification, avian flu, school shootings, traffic fatalities, targeted drone assassinations, Katy Perry songs, corporate crime, garbage patches, tsunami devastation, cyber stalking, cancer, unemployment, mindless service industry jobs, social media terms of service, Rush Limbaugh and paper cuts? It’s quick, costeffective and easy. But alas, our society apparently has to solve these issues (all of which, save the tsunamis, we had a hand in causing) on our own. And if that seems overwhelming then, well, join the club. Better to focus on home–on our little Maui County. Just step outside for a moment, look around, take a nice, cleansing breath, and see just what a mess we’ve made of this wonderful paradise. I jest, somewhat, though 2012 did have its share of shake-ups, scares and just plain stupidity. To make looking back over the year just a bit less painful, we’ve organized our annual Year in Review into a series of lists highlighting 2012’s biggest stories, and biggest disappointments. Given the record-breaking year of traffic fatalities in the county, we’ve also decided to list the names of every person killed on the road in Maui County during 2012. We made it through another year, and that’s good cause to celebrate on New Years, but please be extra careful. Worlds can end for individuals, too.

4. LC goes after Kihei Triangle (again) Facebook was lit up for weeks in the spring over this one. As it had a few years ago, the Maui County Department of Liquor Control started making noises about bringing the hammer down on Kihei Kalama Village (aka, the Barmuda Triangle). The issue, as then, was excessive noise. So the LC proposed banning all live entertainment

5. Monkeypod tree destruction Put simply, there were four very large Monkeypod trees on South Kihei Road. The County of Maui wanted to cut them down because they were damaging nearby sidewalks, creating a hazard for pedestrians (and a potential liability for the county). But residents rallied around the trees. Let’s just say a lot of trees died to provide enough newsprint to save those four trees, which are, apparently still there, thanks to the Kihei Community Association.
after 10pm. Licensees packed the hearing room. Commissioners went back and forth, and ultimately did what they do they best: they punted. Later, when Lulu’s closed, the whole issue seemed to die away quietly. 3. Proposed Olowalu Town The big money in West Maui (in this case, Bill Frampton and Dave Ward) wants to build 1,500 homes in Olowalu, which is currently very small and very quaint. It’s also home to some of the most unique coral reefs in the entire state, and marine biologists are saying that much development won’t be kind to the corals at all. It’s still in the approval process, and is shaping up to be the most controversial island development in years. PLUS

study of haze in Haleakala National Park probably didn’t help matters. In any case, a whole lotta people on both sides of the issue got really hot and bothered, which should certainly flare up again next year when Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar starts burning their cane fields again.
1. Kihei Mega Malls Very long story short, Eclipse Development from Orange County, California has a bunch of land mauka of Piilani Highway in Kihei that’s currently zoned Light Industrial. If they get their way, they will build a whole mess of big retail outlets there, which aren’t exactly “light industrial” land uses. Anyway, the whole island from Mokulele to Makena is buzzing over this, and it won’t end anytime soon.
TOP FIVE SCANDALS 5. MauiTime Publisher arrested for photographing Maui cops In late November, the Maui Police Department started Operation RECON, a massive effort on Haleakala Highway targeting cars with illegal window tints and trucks with oversized tires. Stopping near some officers to find out why traffic was so backed up, MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo was arrested after trying to film the officers. We can argue about Russo’s attitude when confronting the officers, but his right to film them is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

TOP FIVE CELEBRITY STORIES 5. Doobie Brother parties with Congresswoman Mazie Hirono Who knew that Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers was a supporter of up-and-coming left-of-center U.S. Senate candidates (now Senator-elects) like Mazie Hirono? Apparently, superstar music producer Shep Gordon knew, because in February he hosted both of them at his pad for a little fundraiser. Judging by the election results, Simmons seems to know how to spend his political capital.

4. Wailuku Main Street Association After years of news reports and stories about how the Wailuku Main Street Association (WMSA)–long a darling of the Maui County Council–was allegedly mismanaging county taxpayer-funded grant money, this year the state Attorney General’s office finally took a legal crow bar to the nonprofit. It’s investigation, which remains ongoing, has uncovered nauseating evidence that WMSA has made a mockery of terms like “community” and “accountability.” 3. Justin Dobbs’ lawsuit against the County of Maui Liquor Control Dept. In October, former Maui County Liquor Control Officer Justin Dobbs filed a lawsuit against the county, alleging that he was terminated for being a whistleblower who had attempted to inform his LC superiors of corruption within the department. Dobbs lawsuit named a whole bunch of names–both of LC officers allegedly taking freebies and goodies and of establishments (regular and hostess) that were apparently handing out said goodies.
4. Mick Fleetwood opens restaurant in Lahaina In the summer, Mick Fleetwood, drummer for Fleetwood Mac, took the vacant old Lahaina Store Building on Front Street and turned it into Fleetwood’s on Front Street, a sprawling restaurant featuring a rooftop bar with live entertainment nightly and a sprawling menu (which includes, I kid you not, a one-pound burger that comes with cheddar cheese, applewood bacon, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions and a custom Harley Davidson motorcycle, all for $32,274.81) that’s orchestrated by Chef Scott Leibfried of Hell’s Kitchen. 3. Shane Victorino traded to Dodgers, then Red Sox When the Major Leagues started their season in April, Maui’s own future Hall of Famer Shane Victorino was a Philadelphia Phillie, as he’d been since 2005. But in the summer, he was suddenly sporting Dodger Blue. This lasted until mid December when Victorino (who wasn’t apparently happy in L.A.), got himself traded to Boston. 2. Wailuku shanty town condemned There are about a hundred people living in hand-built shacks on about 34 acres of land (owned by developer Stanford Carr) in Wailuku near Happy Valley. In the first weeks of the year the county brought the hammer down on Carr for a long series of alleged code violations, but the ultimate fate of the poor, largely Hawaiian people who squatted on the land was left unknown. Making matters much worse, unscrupulous types claiming to be kanaka royalty were pretending to represent many of the squatters, when in fact they were merely taking what little money the people had. It was ugly all around. 1. Convicted meth dealer/Maui fire fighter admits selling drugs to other fire fighters On July 11, The Maui News reported that former Maui County fire fighter Juanito Dudoit was convicted of selling methamphetamine. But in the story, the paper revealed that Dudoit had also admitted to selling the drugs on the fire station property itself, and to various colleagues “in engine, hazmat and rescue crews” of the fire department. Who exactly those fire personnel are, and whether they’re still on the job (and allegedly taking meth) remains a mystery.

1. Took Lipoa Point out of preservation It was one of the most cynical votes I’ve come across while covering Maui. On Aug. 2, Maui County Council Members Gladys Baisa, Danny Mateo, Joe Pontanilla, Mike Victorino and Mike White approved Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s request to take 150 acres of Lipoa Point, which for decades had been considered off limits to development, out of preservation. The company, which still owns a great deal of land, said that it needed this particular area for collateral for its 1,600 pensioners.

5. U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye passes away Sure, it’s not really surprising when any 88-year-old man dies, but Inouye? They literally built the State of Hawaii around that guy. He’d been in the Senate since JFK was president. And then, just a few weeks ago, he went into the hospital for what was described as a minor respiratory ailment or something. A week later we’re talking about who’s going to succeed him. Damn.
5. Approved another $3.5 million grant for the Maui Visitors Bureau I know they do this every year, without fuss or question. But it’s still corporate welfare, given with dubious reasoning and accountability. 4. Approved a mere $100,000 to fix War Memorial Gym When Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa asked for $21.5 for a new gym complex that would replace War Memorial, which dates to the 1950s, the County Council responded with just $100,000. A few weeks later somebody hit a fire hydrant in Maui Lani, and flooded out the gym, causing an estimated $200,000 in damage. Do the math. Oh wait, on second thought, don’t bother. It’s not pretty. 3. Supported HB 2742 In February, County Council members Bob Carroll, Danny Mateo, Joe Pontanilla and Mike White wrote letters to the state House Judiciary Committee, saying they supported HB 2742, which would have exempted county councils from the state’s open meetings law (known as the “Sunshine Law”). Mateo, who wrote the most detailed letter, said their reason was that under the pesky Sunshine Law, “council members have little or no opportunity to communicate outside of meetings to find areas of agreement and avoid misunderstandings”–exactly the kinds of secret meetings the whole open meetings law was designed to avoid. Needless to say, HB 2742 went nowhere. 2. Approved a drastically weakened Maui Island Plan To be fair, the very fact that this council managed to pass anything in their twoyear term labeled “Maui Island Plan”–a feat the previous council failed to do– should be applauded. Too bad they decided the way to do was by stripping out virtually all of the smart growth protections the plan’s original authors had put into the plan so many years ago.
4. Mazie Hirono wipes the floor with Linda Lingle When these two met back in the 2002 Hawaii Governor’s race, Lingle handily beat Hirono. It wasn’t a blowout, but it wasn’t close either. But during their rematch, over retiring Senator Daniel Akaka’s seat, Hirono utterly and completely smashed Lingle. This, despite the fact that Lingle has incredible ambition and is a far better debater than Hirono. 3. ILWU endorses Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa Where do we begin on this one. How about the fact that when it went down, back in April, Arakawa still had two full years left in his term of office. Add that to the fact that Arakawa is a nominal Republican, and the ILWU is hard-core Democrat. But when you add the fact that the wife of County Councilman Mike Victorino (the name most often floated as a possible mayoral challenger to Arakawa’s eventual 2014 bid for reelection) works for the ILWU, then the story gets downright weird. continued on page 10

continued from page 9 2. Environmentalists save Freight Trains We’re putting this on the list because of the scope of the surprise, not because we thought environmentalists (led by Surfrider) incapable of saving the world-famous surf spot. Literally, news that the decadeslong fight over expansion of the Maalaea Harbor had ended came out of nowhere. But it’s done. 1. Representative Joe Souki announces he will be Speaker again The whole Is Joe Souki Gonna Be Speaker Again? question is far from resolved, but here’s what we know for certain. Current House Speaker Calvin Say, who’s held the job for 14 years, has resigned, saying he no longer has the votes to stay in power. Souki, who once held the job but lost it to Say, says he does have the votes to become Speaker, but had to recruit a bunch of Republicans to do so. 3. Charles Maxwell died Cancer took Maxwell–a former Maui cop, longtime Hawaiian sovereignty activist and ordained kahu–died of cancer at the age of 74 in March. Maxwell was a legend on Maui, and his presence will definitely be missed.

2. Jose Krall died One morning in December, Jose Krall was baking delicious, wonderful pastries and treats at the Maui Bake Shop, which he owned with his wife Claire Fujii-Krall in Wailuku. Then that night he got aboard his Cessna 172, like had many times before, and attempted to fly to Molokai. Attempting to turn around in hazy, dusky conditions, Krall instead flew into the water and perished.
5. Sea Shepherd says they’ll start chapter on Maui The radical anti-whaling activist group already has a chapter on the North Shore of Oahu, but they’re more than welcome to come here and raise hell over issues like Navy sonar harming dolphins and mysterious killings of endangered monk seals. 2. Maui County Council passes GMO labeling resolution Sure, the bill calling on foods containing genetically modified organisms to disclose such on their labels that the Maui County Council passed on Sept. 21 was just a toothless resolution. But it was also yet another official reminder that many Americans really want to know exactly what goes into the foods they eat. And that’s a great thing.
TOP FIVE SAD DEATH STORIES 5. Maui PD shoots and kills Marshall “Mosi” Langford. Officer-involved shootings are always bad news. Sure, Langford had a criminal record and may have even posed a threat to the officer who shot and killed him in the parking lot of the Mana Kai Resort in Wailea. Oh, and because state law shields police departments from releasing the names of officers who kill people in the line of duty or Internal Affairs reports on deadly force incidents, we really don’t know who shot Langford, or whether the shooting was completely justified. 4. Ed Tanji died The former Maui News City Editor and longtime Maui newspaper reporter was 65 when he died in September. His last column, published after his death,

3. MOFL opens bookstore in Central Maui For years, Central Maui had a Borders Bookstore in the Maui Marketplace, a Borders Express in the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center and the Maui Friends of the Library (MFOL) used bookstore in Pu‘unene. Then Borders folded up and closed all their stores. That left Central Maui without any major bookstore. Thankfully, MFOL has stepped into that vacuum and now runs an actual bookstore chain on the island, with new locations in Lahaina at the Wharf Cinema Center and at the Queen Kaahumanu Center. Most of the selection remains used books, but they do sell new books by local authors and publishers.

4. Get a Job Movie finally released on DVD How many years has it been since Brian Kohne’s made-on-Maui film debuted at the Iao Theater? Too many is the answer. But thankfully, Kohne finally finished his movie, which is packed with island actors and celebrities, and it’s now selling for $20. The best part? It’s a good movie, which hopefully means we’ll see more pictures made entirely on the Valley Isle.
1. Tsunami proved to be a total fake-out As everyone who heard the doomsday sirens blow on the night of Oct. 27 knew, the idea that a wall of water generated from a large earthquake in Canada was bearing down on the Hawaiian Islands was quite scary. Graphics and wave height estimates broadcast by the local TV news gave rise to some terrifying scenarios. But then, not long after midnight, the tsunami waves actually reached our shores and proved to be harmless. Fake-outs are generally bad, but this one felt awesome. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1628L1
The Year in Traffic Fatalities hat a year it’s been–if you’ve been watching traffic fatalities in Maui County. They’re up, you know. Twentythree, as of press time. Last year there were 20 such deaths in the county. In 2010, there were just 11. No one seems to know why the roads seem to be getting a bit more dangerous each year. But they are. Here’s a look back at those who died in the County of Maui because they or someone else was speeding, drinking or just being careless.

Food & Drink
The Year 2012 in Maui Food BY JEN RUSSO
Amasia Chef Alan Wong at the Wailea Wine and Food Festival
T
his was the year the word “gastropub” was finally added to the Merriam Websters dictionary. Defined as upscale pub grub, this genre of food had more of a stronghold on the mainland where it has dominated for the last decade, but its popularity has not gone unnoticed on Maui. Menus have swelled with gourmet burgers, fancy fries, fish and chips, artisan bread, herb dressings and sauces and all kinds of flatbreads. European-influenced menus like the new 100 Wines offer shameless, cheese-heavy dishes, grilled salads with frozen dressing and charcuterie boards, laden with more cheeses and meats, to an audience that embraces the richness and pairs it with wine and cocktails flawlessly. Celebrities and celebrity chefs took notice of our passionate appetites. Mick Fleetwood opened his three-level, English-influenced entertainment and edibles emporium and hired Hell’s Kitchen Sous Chef Scott Leibfried as corporate chef, with local chef Maro Gjurasic (formerly from The Plantation House) rounding out the star-studded talented staff that brings us Beef Wellington and bangers and fingerling flatbread on Front Street. Star Noodle Chef Sheldon Simeon sustains his rising star this year with more recognition from Food and Wine Magazine, to say nothing of his battling it out on Food Network’s current season of Top Chef . Celebrity Chef Alan Wong opened Amasia in the Grand Wailea, resurrecting the stunning Japanese Kincha location that hadn’t been used in years. Wong created a hybrid menu of what could be Maui’s own version of gastro: Asian-guided share plates inspired by local style backyard holo holo around the hibachi. Amasia’s menu covers several categories–sushi, raw bar, robata (grilled) and family style in large portion.
In 2013, Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto is planning a 136-seat restaurant at the new Wailea Andaz on Mokapu Beach. Acclaimed Los Angeles Chef Josiah Citrin, owner of top rated Melisse, opened his fast casual burger concept on Maui at Sure Thing Burger on Front Street. The menu offers four gourmet burgers featuring different proteins, including Maui Cattle beef, all hand-patted and processed in house. That wasn’t the only new burger concept on Maui, with LA’s well known slow food burger joint called FatBurger making its entry into the Maui market in Pukalani where KFC use to sit next to Foodland. In Paia, Johnny B’s opened, featuring buns from the famed Komoda Bakery, local beef from the Big Island and Roselani shakes. But Maui’s ultimate slow food burger joint hails from family run Bully’s Burger in Kanaio. While you eat the pure beef patties at their picnic tables along the backside to Hana, you can gaze on the Triple L Ranch grazing cattle that provided that amazing flavor. The beef, the terroir, the views of the island of Hawaii are all epic, making this stand a must for burger aficionados. Maui’s foodies got a whole lot more festive this year with new festivals like Broke da Mouth and Ka’anapali Fresh on the Westside joining the ranks of Plantation Days and the Kapalua Wine and Food Festival. Broke da Mouth continues in the space Taste of Lahaina left after petering out. It offers live, local acts, food competitions, tastings and family entertainment. Ka’anapali Resort Association decided it was high time to dream big and put on their ultimate wine and food event that put local farms and food purveyors at the forefront through a partnership with Maui County Farm Bureau. Each Ka’anapali chef teamed up with a farmer
for every event. It was a spectacular weekend from tours of the Ka’anapali Coffee Farm, hosted by Kimo Falconer, to other land and sea activities, a progressive dinner prowl around Ka’anapali, a wine and food festival and the finale–a Third Eye Blind Concert at the Royal Lahaina. Not to be outdone, the Wailea Resort Association branded their own Wailea Wine and Food Festival this December, with an amazing spread of events throughout their resorts, highlighting the cluster of culinary talent in Wailea. May’s Maui Brewer’s Festival grew as well, seeing its most successful year of craft beers and gastro pub pairings while fundraising for the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Farm to plate and glass continues as the mantra for restaurants on Maui. Food transparency is trickling down to specifics at farmers markets, and a more educated consumer, diner and drinker. Most bars have made a fresh herb and juice conversion, most recently the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villa with their fantastic Dewar’s smash with raspberries developed by Bay Area mixologist Manny Hinojosa. Resorts have gardens to source their own herbs, chefs have local farmers growing specific items for them and bartenders are bar chefs. Restaurants like Pacific’o, I’o and Aina Gourmet Market have their own upcountry farm: O’o, which hosts visitors, outdoor lunches and eco-tourism events for visitors ready to get their hands dirty. Chef James Simpliciano started his own farm Simpli Fresh, which takes fallow farm land and transforms it into food revolutionary crops that help at risk kids. A number of pop-up concepts hit the ground running this year. Chef Jim Devevan brought Outstanding in the Field to Maui for its inaugural Hawaii farm pop-
up dinners. Chef Justin Pardo of Market Fresh Bistro and Kupa’a Farms star in the show. Maui’s own version of Kupu Maui shares more than a meal in their pop-ups that pair a themed food with an amazing location every month on Maui. The closing of restaurants is always a sad moment on the island, but none brought more despair than Maui Bake Shop’s, which happened following the tragic death of baker/co-owner Jose Krall when his plane crashed on the way to Molokai. We also bid a sad farewell to David Paul’s Island Grill, Famous Dave’s, Saffron, Alexander’s Fish and Chips, Big Wave Cafe, Timba, Aroma D ‘Italia, Four Sister’s Restaurant and Tacos Del Mar, to name a few. The only caveat we have is that this may make room for something new and delicious to blossom from the location. What’s on the horizon for Maui? More micro-locally sourced menus, but with a new twist: catering to those looking for specialty diets like gluten-free and vegan. Bartenders not wanting to squeeze fresh juices will have to get creative with the infused and flavored distilled bottles inundating the beverage market, and there will be more biodynamic and organic and energy efficient wines and craft beers. Maui Brewing Company cans of limited release beers and its upcoming expansion will quench our insatiable craft beer thirst. Pies made a good run at taking over from the cupcake, with amazing additions from Leoda’s and Monkeypod Kitchen, but the next big thing in the dessert market is still anyone’s game. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s foodblog at: mauidish.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1628d1

Film
Best of the Wurst 2012 BY BARRY WURST II
1. The Master Like every other film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, this will divide everyone, especially those not in the mood for a strange, frequently off putting, character-driven period piece about a deranged, lost soul who winds up a puppet to a cult leader. Joaquin Phoenix transforms himself into a scary, always unpredictable drifter who becomes a psychological captive to a charismatic windbag, played beautifully by Philip Seymour Hoffman. There’s also Amy Adams, extraordinary as Hoffman’s wife, who may be the craziest of them all. The dream-like, haunting cinematography makes this feel more like a uniquely personal journey for its audience than a safe, straight forward story. We’re never told by the filmmakers how we’re supposed to feel about any of this and the film is as much a test for us as the odd treatments of “The Cause” are on Phoenix. It may be challenging, but it’s also hypnotic, darkly humorous and lacking a single moment that’s predictable or sentimental. Movies like this are exciting to watch, because you won’t know where its taking you, only that you’ve never been there before.
2. Zero Dark Thirty Further proof that director Kathryn Bigelow makes tougher, meaner and better action movies than anyone else. Her latest is an amazing achievement, portraying the hunt for Osama Bin Laden as a search for truth with impossible obstacles facing a dedicated CIA operative (played by a never better Jessica Chastain). Not a testosterone-drenched explosion fest but a character drama and nail biting thriller comparable to JFK or Zodiac. The siege on Bin Laden’s hideout is a stunning set-piece but you won’t find a bad, sentimental,
wrongheaded or unnecessary scene here. Whether it’s 100 percent accurate or takes narrative short cuts, this is a great story.
3. The Dark Knight Rises Christopher Nolan’s finest Batman adventure yet was overshadowed by the horrific Colorado shooting that took place last July. His film doesn’t deserve becoming a footnote to this horrible occurrence. Bat-fans went nuts over The Dark Knight but this is a better film, with a leaner, more focused screenplay. While there’s no replacing Heath Ledger, this offers a collection of great actors giving wonderful performances. Of the many terrific moments scattered throughout, Michael Caine’s final scene hits the hardest.
4. Frankenweenie Tim Burton’s astonishing black and white, stop motion animated comedy is his best work in years. Who cares if it wasn’t a hit? It’s as brilliantly crafted and ghoulishly funny as expected but with many emotionally stirring moments that sneak up on you. Weird Girl is one of my favorite characters of the movie year.
5. On The Road Walter Salles’ triumphant adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s legendary novel about a restless generation of writers becomes a jazzy, exhilarating ride. Fans of the book need to accept the film for what it is and not reject it for being a different experience from the written page. An “unfilmable” work is now an improbably terrific, vivid and moving film about finding yourself and the innocence lost on the way. Garrett Hedlund (as Neal Cassdy) and Viggo Mortensen (amazing as William Burroughs) give two of the year’s finest performances.
The Master
6. Prometheus Ridley Scott’s outer space epic still gets the fanboys worked up, as the loved it/ hated it camps firmly draw lines in the sand. Good. The more audiences give this a second and third look, they’ll realize it doesn’t matter how much this is or isn’t like Alien. There are no answers to the wild plot points it presents and that’s the point. Like the scientists scrounging to learn the origin of life, we’ll never solve every puzzle but still have one hell of an experience. The film this resembles even more than Alien is Forbidden Planet, which is the highest praise I can give.
7. Samsara The makers of Baraka, the dream-like documentary partially filmed on Maui, return 20 years later with this dialogue-free, hypnotic and indescribably beautiful look at life on Earth. Imagine a Terrence Malick film with no story but imagery that defines jaw dropping.
8. Arbitrage Richard Gere’s performance is possibly his best, in this timely drama. Beginning as a straight from the headlines character study of an Enron-like corporation, it takes a sharp turn and unfolds as a race-against-time thriller. It weaves a great tale without settling for an easy,
formulaic outcome for its morally compromised lead character.
9. Moonrise Kingdom Wes Anderson’s splendid comedy understands that, when you fall in love for the first time as a child, the attraction is based on the idea of perfection, not rational behavior. The tale of a “Khaki Scout” who runs off with his dream girl does many things right; among them: the two kids in question aren’t cookie-cutter Hollywood actors but two interesting young performers playing a very weird pair. There’s also Bruce Willis and Bill Murray, two of the coolest men on the planet, playing a couple of middle aged doofuses and a look that suggests a live action Charles Addams cartoon.
10. Jiro Dreams of Sushi Whether you consider sushi “bait” or can’t get enough of it (count me in on the latter), this unique documentary will pull you in. Set in a Japanese subway, we witness the remarkably disciplined, day-to-day life of a sushi wizard and how every action and decision in the kitchen is a task to be mastered. Movies about food are rarely this unusual, gorgeous to behold and mouth-watering. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1628f

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) The Superfriends seemed to always be on call, just hanging around in their Legion of Honor or Hall of Justice, or whatever it was, just waiting for a crisis. It’s difficult to imagine a sense of duty or responsibility so powerful it becomes that consuming. I mean, that place didn’t even have a pool table or anything! I guess that’s how it is when you’re doing something you love. There’s not much point in doing anything else, at that point. Don’t waste time with that other bullshit, if you’ve found one of your special callings. If you haven’t—put down the pool cue. You’ve got work to do. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) In many of Shakespeare’s plays, the characters enter the woods, the unknown, and the world becomes surreally festive; suddenly people can take on roles or act in ways they’d never touch in ordinary life. Foreign concept for you Aquarians—you’re famously open-minded, and open to trying pretty much anything. Having such an accepting attitude has drawbacks, though—where are the shocks and surprises? Everyone should have his or her own version of the deep, dark woods, where the unknown can lurk and the unexpected can occur. This week, find your unexplored forest of the soul, and go there. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Perhaps you’re finally prepared to notice that the connection you’ve been so dutifully nurturing is nothing more than a well-fed illusion. No matter how much you stuff into it, it’ll never be much more than a slaphappy poltergeist. How can you exorcise it from your life? Simply abandon your misguided faith in its existence. Continuing to believe in it at this point is like cuddling up to a blinking neon light for warmth. Quit your unhealthy addiction to your own ideas. The real thing is out there. All you need to do is cut yourself free and go find it. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) I so rarely draw up the sharpened portcullis guarding my most vulnerable places. But you have a way of making people lower their drawbridges, extending pathways over their otherwise lethal moats. Don’t underestimate your talent for getting people to climb over or knock down their own walls. It’s your honest enthusiasm and obvious goodwill that opens so many doors for you. This week is no exception. In fact, your smile will open so many gates, windows, and zippers this week you won’t have time to go through them all. Choose wisely, and don’t look back. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Back off. Let the poor victim of your verbal knockout catch his breath. Although it’s tempting to deliver a few extra kicks while your target is laid out gasping for air, maintain some restraint. The cheers onlookers delivered as you administered a righteous beating to a long-time oppressor would quickly turn to jeers, if you turned spiteful. The difference between justified revolt and petty meanness can be a subtle one. Begin your newly installed social order with fairness and generosity, the lack of which spurred this confrontation in the first place. This week, be a benevolent enforcer of justice, not a tyrannical dictator of your own will. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Years ago, a couple friends and I went to the pine forest behind our college one Full Moon night. I got naked and danced around the fields while they got all witchy on me and sang beautifully inharmonious melodies. Meanwhile, the moon set, and in the ensuing darkness I couldn’t find my clothes. I had to go back to campus naked, and wandered back through my dorm fantastically exposed. This week you’re quite likely to have a similar experience to mine—magical, but likely to make you lose your shirt (and maybe your pants). That’s hardly a bad thing; a lot of great things can happen with your clothes off, as you know.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) When it comes to defending your home turf and the people who preside there, you can get downright nasty. While your ethics have been vacationing in Tahiti or Baja (certainly nowhere near home) you’ve been waltzing on morally precarious ground. You sometimes look at yourself as ruler, defender, and provider for your tiny kingdom. Consider this: What happens when the denizens discover their monarch is tyrannical, their knight-protector amoral, and their nourishment stolen? They revolt. Look to your code of honor this week, and make sure all your actions (not just one or two of them) abide by it, or you’ll be the only one sitting at your Round Table before long. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Even your mother isn’t returning your calls. It seems like the whole world has turned against you, or at least away from you, during weeks like these. However, would you be willing to believe that the neglect you’ve experienced lately is just a coincidence? You haven’t fallen from grace. Your spotlight hasn’t sputtered into darkness, only been eclipsed by some more immediately pressing events in your loved ones’ lives. Be patient—their distraction is only temporary, and you’re sure to soon resume your role as local beauty queen—as long as you don’t drive everyone away by harping on their momentary lapses. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Let’s say you won a trophy of some kind. Here are two possible options of what you might do with it: display the polished trophy on the mantelpiece, or stick it in a drawer. Each would make a bold statement about your relationship to the win. One would mark it as your crowning achievement, a glorious highlight of your life, and the other would suggest it was merely one of many notable accomplishments. You won either way. What’s your choice? In the end, which really makes you look better? There’s not really a “right” answer; I’d just advise looking at the big picture before you decide.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Your insistence on unnecessary rules is ridiculously unlike you, something equivalent to posting a sign on your apartment door, saying “No Rhinos allowed.” It’s a bad joke, and worse because you take it so seriously. Relax, babe. No one is going to mess up your rugs with their big, smelly, rhino feet, or leave steaming piles of dung next to your bed. Guarding yourself against such unlikelihood is only making you lose some serious street cred. Take a deep breath and open your arms to the stinky rhinoceri of the world. I guarantee you won’t see a single one, at least not this week. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) I like to imagine the classes where people learn to compose the orchestral music that provides the soundtrack to virtually every TV commercial or program. Designed specifically to manipulate people’s emotions without calling attention to itself (in fact, if you pay attention specifically to it, it becomes laughably ineffective), it’s a very devious art. Your powers of persuasion could benefit from an application of a similar technique. Since your current agenda’s so challenging, don’t hesitate to use underhanded methods (like an emotionally charged soundtrack, pheromones, or subliminal suggestions) to get your way. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You’re so good at waking up, still drunk, in other people’s bathtubs it’s not funny. The imminent New Year might prompt one of those good times—the kind you can’t remember the next day. Don’t waste another morning pulling congealed pizza slices out of your hair. Do things differently this year. I’m not saying don’t go hog-wild—what is a Sag without wild abandon? Just, get creative. Come up with a version of fun that might be even more incredible than the types you’re familiar with—all the more so because you can actually remember it.
