ALSO, THE REPORTER SHIELD LAW BILL SHOULD DIE

Mar. 28 hearing on the bill. “But, our focus on who is a journalist is misguided,” he wrote. “This law is not about protecting journalists–traditional or otherwise–some of whom we may like personally or politically, others we may not. The underlying public policy of this law is to encourage sources, whistleblowers, for example, to disclose truthful information to the public so that the public will have full access to information it needs to meaningfully engage in the life of the community. I believe a strong Shield Law is a means of fighting public apathy.” See, shield laws encourage people who work for government, law enforcement,

For all of you out there wondering whatever became of former Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle (you know who you are), I have some important new information for you. Turns out she’s gone and joined something called the U.S. Energy Security Council. “Governor Lingle brings to the council a unique perspective and wealth of experience in running a state whose economy is heavily dependent on tourism, a sector which is severely impacted when oil prices rise,” Senior Council Adviser Gal Luft is quoted as saying in a small blurb on the appointment that ran in the April 6 Maui News. I’m sorry–aren’t you familiar with the U.S. Energy Security Council (USESC to its close friends)? Well, according to its website (Usesc.org), it was formed way back in 2011, apparently to find a place to stick all our out-of-work white, male defense secretaries (Harold Brown, William Perry), elected officials (Jeff Bingaman, Gary Hart), generals (Barry McCaffrey), Hawaii Superferry executives (John Lehman), Federal Reserve chairmen (Alan Greenspan), CIA directors (R. James Woolsey), Iran-Contra conspirators (Robert McFarlane) and Las Vegas Sands President Mike Leven, because apparently he’s in everything these days. “The goal of the United States Energy Security Council is to highlight and promote a fresh approach to solving America’s oil predicament, one that addresses the roots of our vulnerability–oil’s monopoly over transportation fuel,” state’s the USESC website on the organization’s mission. Now we can argue over how “fresh” the approach to our nation’s energy needs will be coming from a panel that includes our government’s most distinguished has-beens, but I think we can all agree that when you hear the word “predicament,” Linda Lingle is the first person who comes to mind.

For the last five years, journalists and those who provide them information have enjoyed one of the strongest legal protections in the nation. Of the 40 or so states in the U.S. that have so-called reporter shield laws, Hawaii had one of the best–it said writers and reporters for newspapers, magazines, online news sites and blogs could do their work without having to worry that prosecutors would subpoena their notes and unpublished materials. Now those days seem to be coming to an end. The Hawaii state Legislature, which had once acted so generously towards those who report the news, is now moving through HB 622. It's in conference now, but in the view of two of the state’s leading shield law advocates, is actually worse than having no journalist protections whatsoever. “My clients would be better off with no bill,” media attorney and shield law advocate Jeff Portnoy said in an April 4, 2013 Associated Press story on the bill. “I’d rather go to court and argue all the cases than have this.” Gerald Kato, an associate professor of journalism at the University of Hawaii who has spent many years fighting for reporters’ access to government and protection from prosecution, told me that Portnoy’s right. “It’s pretty awful,” Kato said. “I agree with Jeff. Unless this law is changed–back to what it is now–in conference, we’d be better off without a law.” Obviously, this was how journalists–who had first proposed HB 622–hoped things would turn out. They were concerned with the fact that the current shield law had a sunset provision, meaning it would expire at the end of June. So they put forth a bill that would make the shield protections permanent. First as it moved through the state House of Representatives, and now the state Senate, the bill began to change.

Certain exemptions on subpoenaing reporters found their way into amendments in the House. Then, when it reached the Senate Judiciary and Labor Committee, chaired by Senator Clayton Hee (D, Kaneohe), whole protections suddenly vanished. If the bill passes as is now written, newspapers and magazines in business for less than a year, bloggers like investigative reporter Ian Lind (Ilind.net) and online news sites like Hawaii Reporter (Hawaiireporter.com) and Honolulu Civil Beat (Civilbeat.com) would no longer enjoy protection under the shield law. Ironically, the bill would still protect this paper, which has been published since 1996.

Future newsroom?

By returning the state’s shield law to 1950 in journalistic history (indeed, Hee referenced the Chicago Tribune ’s infamous “Dewey Defeats Truman” headline in 1948 to rationalize his view that that media made errors), the Senate is going out of its way to miss the whole point of why we have a shield law in the first place. It’s a point Kato made explicitly in his written testimony, presented to Hee’s committee during its

Overheard “Is that velour? Wow, I haven’t seen that much velour since Star Trek.” -Guy at Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea, April 6

the military, big business–or any organization, really, that is not dealing with some internal corruption or malfeasance in a just manner and would punish employees for speaking out–to make their concerns public. Of course, when you look at shield laws that way, it’s surprising that any state legislature would pass one. Which brings me to this prediction: if HB622 passes in its amended form and gets signed by Governor Neil Abercrombie– or even if it doesn’t and the whole shield law is allowed to expire in June–there shouldn’t be too many instances of judges jailing reporters for refusing to hand over unpublished notes or source identities. But if all a potential whistleblower has for protection is a reporter’s assurance that he or she would rather go to the slammer than reveal a source’s identity, then there will be a lot fewer potential whistleblowers out there. And that’s a depressing thought for anyone who reads the news. Indeed, I found it so depressing that I said as much to Kato near the end of our interview. “You’re depressed,” he said. “I’m angry!” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

So What Did We Learn From Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa’s Reversal On Closing County Recycling Centers? BY AXEL BEERS

W

hen a friend of mine texted to tell me that Mayor Alan Arakawa was closing all the county recycling centers, I didn’t believe her. I dismissed it, saying something like, “I don’t think the mayor’s that stupid.” Recycling is one of those subjects that should bring people together. After all, what’s controversial about asking people to be responsible when disposing of the waste they create? That we all live on an island with limited space and resources isn’t in dispute. But on Monday, Mar. 25, Mayor Alan Arakawa proceeded to bring dispute to the issue of recycling on Maui. It was on that day that he confirmed plans to close all County of Maui recycling drop box centers, claiming that the emergence of private recycling centers was now sufficient to meet Maui’s recycling needs, and it was time for the county to get out of the industry. “Originally, when these recycling centers were put up, there were no other recycling centers and the county was the only game in town,” he said in a Maui Now video interview posted that day. “Since then, in Kahului alone, there are at least four other recycling centers that I know of that are handling the same recycling that the county is doing... We’re paying three-quarters of a million dollars to have companies do recycling competing against the private sector which is making profits and getting paid nothing.” That said, Arakawa tried to reassure residents. “There should be very little break in service because there are available recycling centers in almost all of the communities except for one that I know of–which is Hana,” he said. When asked about the number of jobs

lost under the proposal, Arakawa responded, “I don’t know.” Arakawa’s assurances notwithstanding, people were outraged. Employees at Aloha Recycling encouraged patrons to voice their disapproval as article Comments sections flared up. Amidst comments chastising the Mayor and questioning his intelligence, serious concerns were voiced. “This is backwards thinking. When it comes to recycling ... more is better,” wrote one Facebook commenter. Another poster who identified as “partially disabled” stated that the facility at UHMC was the only one accessible, and without it he would no longer be able to recycle. Upcountry recyclers questioned the Kihei's center practicality of trafficking used recyclables into Kahului. But then, on that Thursday, something remarkable happened. The Mayor changed his mind. “The residential drop box program will continue,” Arakawa said in a Mar. 28 news release sent out to “dispel rumors.” “Due to the amount of confusion and concern that has been expressed regarding the status of County-funded residential drop box recycling sites,” the release stated, “there

will be no changes to the current level of service until further analysis can be done.” The mayor’s news release pointed the finger at flyers circulated by employees of Aloha Recycling. “These flyers have provided only partial information, and ensuing rumors have spawned a great deal of misinformation,” stated the news release. The news release did not include any examples of “misinformation,” leading us to wonder if he meant lines like this, taken from the flyer: • “The Mayor is considering shutting down ALL County Recycling Centers effective July 1, 2013” • “We need your input to show how important these centers are for you and our community!” • “You can voice your opinion at the Budget and Finance Committee meeting in your area to give your input” The funny thing is the flyers were accurate. The Mayor was going to shut down all county recycling centers on July 1, 2013. “This is fact,” stated the Mayor himself in the Maui Now video. To emphasize the point, Arakawa made direct, unwavering eye contact with the camera as he said the words. If anything, the flyers give the Mayor the benefit of the doubt by saying that he was

“considering” shutting the county centers down. Real consideration is doing an analysis of public concern before staring down a camera and asserting that the July shutdown of a popular public service “is fact.” “The flyers didn’t specify between county and private,” Arakawa’s spokesman Rod Antone said when asked what was meant by “confusion.” “People thought they would not have any place to recycle.” Actually, the handouts did mention the closure of County recycling centers. And considering that most of the public criticism drawn from the closure centered more on the convenience of recycling rather than the absolute disappearance of it, this is a questionable argument. Besides, if anyone was confused, it was The Maui News, which ran a story on Mar. 27 stating that Arakawa was planning to cut $700,000 of the recycling budget (Arakawa had actually said that closing the county recycling centers would save $700,000). The paper ran a correction two days later. But the mayor’s office news release made no reference to the article. “Finding out how to fund [curbside recycling] is what is happening now,” Antone said. “Because people have voiced their opinions we understand that we do have to pay but not from closing centers. Money’s gotta come from somewhere. How do we as a sustainability oriented community pay for it, and what are willing to pay?” Those are excellent questions. If only we’d started all this with the mayor staring into a camera and asking them. ■

LOCAL PLUGS BY AXEL BEERS

BEST TRASHY ART EVER With Earth Day coming up later this month, it’s time for the Art of Trash, that special event where artists challenge themselves to make something beautiful from garbage otherwise destined to live out its days (years or millenia) decomposing in our landfills. It’s a time when “sitting on trash” can conjure images unsuspected, like a chair in a grass skirt. The chair in this case is Lisa Burke’s “Funny Kine Chair,” and it’s the winner of this year’s Chair-ish Maui Recycled Art Contest, which was held April 7 at Makawao Union Church. Complete with accompanying Aloha print seat, plumeria lei and coconut bra strewn over its back, the chair was constructed from an old, discarded folding metal chair once used by the church. It’s been resurrected, given a second life, as it were, and is now destined to sit on display at the Art of Trash exhibit in the Maui Mall from April 19 to May 10. With it will be the second place winner “The Grey Havens,” by Amy Mathis and Barbara LaMarca’s third place winner “Izzy.” “Transforming a rusty folding chair into one that conveys a vision or gives us a laugh, diverts it from the landfill for a few more years thanks to some very creative Chair-ish Maui

participants,” said Wilma Nakamura, Chairish judge and coordinator of Art of Trash, in an April 7 statement. “The artists saw more than a chair. They saw a canvas, an opportunity for an homage to hula and even Jackson Pollock!” Entrants in the Chair-ish Maui Recycled Art competition were given an old, rusty, metal folding chair and instructed to decorate it using any materials. There was only one requirement: the completed chair had to fold and unfold. The contest ran from January through March 31 and received nine entrants. Prizes were donated by Polli’s Mexican Restaurant, Kula Botanical Gardens, Maui EKO Compost, the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management and Bag of Joy. MAUITIME PUBLISHER THOMAS RUSSO SUES COUNTY OF MAUI OVER 2011 DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER INCIDENT On April 8, MauiTime Publisher Thomas Russo filed a lawsuit in U.S.

District Court against the County of Maui, Maui Police Chief Gary Yabuta and Maui Police Officer Nelson Johnson over an April 12, 2011 incident involving Russo, Johnson and members of Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman’s security entourage. According to the 11-page complaint, “This is an action arising out of the events and circumstances leading up to and surrounding the seizure, arrest, harassment, assault, and battery of Tommy Russo, a member of the media, and the seizure of Mr. Russo’s property, who was filming news events on Maui.” To briefly recap the night in question, Russo was leaving work that night and noticed Chapman in the Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot, apparently as part of an episode of his now-cancelled A&E reality show. When Russo identified himself as a member of the media and attempted to photograph Dog with his iPhone, members of Dog’s security detail “shoved” Russo and “grabbed” his phone, according to the complaint. After retrieving the phone, Russo then called 911. Soon after, according to the complaint, “Officer Nelson Johnson told Mr. Russo he was antagonizing Mr. Chapman’s contingency [sic].” When Russo then attempted to photograph Johnson, the complaint says “Of-

ficer Johnson charged Mr. Russo and hit Mr. Russo with an open hand.” The complaint alleges that Johnson further “grabbed” Russo’s phone, “grabbed Mr. Russo’s arm, twisted it and put it behind Mr. Russo’s back” and “pushed Mr. Russo’s face into the car.” In the complaint, Russo asks for punitive damages for unlawful seizure, unlawful arrest, violation of the “First Amendment Right to Film Public Officials,” “Inadequate Supervision/Training/Discipline,” false arrest, battery, assault, negligence and “Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress.” Russo’s attorney is Sam MacRoberts, a Wailuku attorney with the Law Office of Philip H. Lowenthal. A separate criminal case involving Russo’s Nov. 20, 2012 arrest for attempting to film Maui Police Officers during Operation RECON is ongoing in Maui Second District Court. Patrick Wong, the County of Maui’s Corporation Counsel, did not respond to a request for comment by press time. -Anthony Pignataro ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

RESEARCH HURTS Between 2002 and 2010, according to the March BJU International (formerly British Journal of Urology), an estimated 17,600 patients came to U.S. hospital emergency rooms reporting genital injuries from trouser zippers (presumably by accident, but researchers took no position on that). Seven authors (six from University of California, San Francisco) took credit for the report, funded by a National Institutes of Health grant, and found that “zip” wounds were only about one-fifth of emergency penile injuries.

‘SPIRITUAL FOOD’ Talking story with musical legend James Taylor about heroes, audience reactions and why he admires John Mayer By Karen Rose

J

ames Taylor seduced me when I was 16. Okay, not “seduced” exactly. It was more like an epiphany–a revelation tantamount to the one in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening. I was sitting on the lawn at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater when Taylor opened the show with “Shower the People.” It was 1982, and my music collection was limited to a compilation of

INXS, Duran Duran and The B-52’s. My older brother had given me tickets, so with nothing better to do, my friends and I donned our pink high-tops and matching pink hair and went to check out what the older generation was all excited about. Within moments came the realization that the music of my previous generation was far superior to my own. James Taylor’s voice washed over me like musical valium. Since then, my choice of music changed

significantly. My collection of ‘80s punk rock was replaced by the Americana sounds of James Taylor and his contemporaries. It certainly made for great make-out music during my college days when we would put compilations of JT, Dan Fogelberg and others onto our “make-out” cassette tapes. This Friday, April 12, Taylor will perform at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. A few days before his show, I was able to interview him by phone. His kindness and

humility immediately put me at ease, making me feel as though I was chatting with an old friend over coffee... MAUITIME: You’re known for having the most talented, “in-demand” musicians in your band–Steve Gadd, Jimmy Johnson, Michael Landan, Larry Golding and Louis Clark. If you were not the successful solo artist that you are, with what contemporary artist or band would you most like to be a sideman?

through the door there’s a million other people there with the same goal. But your question about who I admire today–I think John Mayer. He comes from the same mold that I come from. I’m not saying that he was influenced by me, but being a guitar player and a singersongwriter–someone who’s relatively self-contained, but whose stuff also sounds great when it’s played by a larger band. And though it sounds nepotistic to say it, my son Sam. I really admire his stuff, too. MT: If you could go back in time, what era would you most like to be a part of?

same time you’re playing with language and music, you’re also feeling the physics of the universe. What really happens with music it that it either connects and sweeps you away, or it doesn’t. Because of that, it’s very elemental–it’s spiritual food. MT: When making your nightly concert set list, how do you balance what you really want to play with what the audience predictably wants to hear? JT: It used to be that if you wanted to hear music, someone had to pick up an instrument and play it. But today, the availability of recorded music means

JAMES TAYLOR: Man, that’s a good question. You know, I played rhythm guitar in my brother Alex’s band in high school, and in the mid ‘60s I went to New York and was a sideman in that band, too. When you ask me which current band I would play with, that’s tough because I have a pretty broad concept of what current means. Doing this for over 50 years, it’s a great surprise that I’m still on the road and still have an audience that supports me and comes out when I tour. The band that I always thought was the dream band was Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and Jim Keltner. They had a band called Little Village that made a phenomenal record with one of my favorite guitar players. Although I call them current, their main recording was about 15 years ago now. You’ll have to check them out–they’re pretty phenomenal. MT: What sideman, who is no longer with us, do you wish you could have had in your band? JT: You know the best thing about getting some degree of success is that you can play with the best. Oh man let’s see, thinking of legendary players, I’ve recorded a couple of times with Richard Tee who was in a band called Stuff, but mainly he was know as Paul Simon’s piano player. He was also a big influence on my piano player, Steven Gadd. So I’d say Richard Tee is the man. MT: Growing up, and when first learning to play guitar, what band did you fantasize about being in? Who was your musical hero, and who is your musical hero now? JT: Wow, you know the Beatles were really big at the time I was with my band in New York in the mid ‘60s. Between [Bob] Dylan, and when I got the wind behind me in the early ‘70s, it was an incredibly productive time. I often wondered why it was such a golden era. I’m thinking of Buffalo Springfield. They were sort of a west coast version of what we were trying to do with Flying Machine. I really admired those guys. Steven Stills went on to be in Crosby, Stills and Nash. Then Richard Furay, and Neil Young went on of course to have great careers as well. That band was a jumping off place for some amazing talent. Buffalo Springfield–those were the contemporaries I most admired. The Beatles, of course, were like Mount Olympus for me. Those guys not only did it, but they weren’t frozen in time by their success. They continued to evolve from their first hit album to their last. Then to be signed by the Beatles in ‘68, and actually have them notice me, continues to be a big moment that hasn’t diminished over time. It’s still the most remarkable thing that’s happened to me. In 1968, after struggling for about four years to get heard, to get picked up by them was just a dream. I can still hardly believe it myself. Music is just one of those things that’s so easy for musicians to get together and create, but it’s not easy to get a career going. I’ve seen two of my kids, Sally and Ben, working on it. Ben has made a goal of being a musician, and has a career that sustains him. But it’s much harder now than when I started out. Now you can record yourself and release something, which makes it much easier to walk through the door, but when you walk

Really loves Brazil

JT: Oh man, I’d have to say Brazilian music in the early ‘60s, late ‘50s or Cuba in 1950. That Bossa Nova, Brazilian thing is a major influence on me. It’s just the right synthesis of sophisticated, European and jazz components, and the AfricanLatin beat that goes with it. The first time I went to Brazil in ‘85, I was so excited. It lived up to all my expectations. It was such a thrill that came at an important time for me after I kind of bottomed out. Part of my story is that of addiction, and I just basically washed up on the beach and was trying to see whether I could carry on, whether there was a life for me on the recovery side of my addiction. There were a lot of questions in my mind, and a lot of self doubt when I went to Brazil. It just completely pumped me back up to realize that I had an audience there, and to be able to get a fusion of that sophisticated Latin soul was really remarkable. The thing about music is it’s a universal language. It’s a cliche because it’s true. It’s an art form that we manipulate, but at the same time it follows rules that are empirically true. At the

that, for most of us, listening to music has become very passive. Often times it’s just something that’s in the background. We’ll play something while we’re working or driving in the car, or hear music playing at the market or whatever, so music becomes incidental and our relationship with it passive. When I go to a concert I have an instant community of people who have chosen to be there, and I’m hyper-aware of that moment. I have such gratitude for the audience–for them showing up and making it possible for me to perform with a band with these players that I love. I’m so focused on the music in that moment and experiencing that with the audience. It never bothers me to play things that the audience responds to because that’s the whole point. There’s something about people coming together to share that same experience and being part of that which never gets old. So when I make a set list, I offer something that’s relatively new or relatively obscure, and then give them something that they know and that they’ve come to hear.

There will be maybe 10 songs that I’m obliged, but happy, to play; for example, “Carolina In My Mind,” “Sweet Baby James,” “Something in the Way She Moves,” “Country Roads,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “How Sweet It Is,” “Handyman,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” “Your Smiling Face” and “Up On a Roof.” I don’t get tired of these songs. I love them so much, and like I said before, it’s the audience reaction that really matters. When people show up for a concert, I feel confident that they’re on my side and that they’re enthusiastic about it. It’s a safe place for me. MT: Looking back, are there any particular “diva moments” that you experienced that now make you cringe, but that you’d like to share with your fans? JT: Let me think about this for a second. Let’s see, there’s times when I was exhausted, but needed to come up to speed, whether I wanted to or not. You can really burn yourself out if you overbook, or try to play too many shows in a row without recharging your batteries. I can’t really say that I’ve thrown a fit or claim to be a diva. It’s always amazed me how lucky I am, and that never leaves me. There have been times when I’ve looked at the audience in the front row and see some guy who brought his wife or his girlfriend and he’s clearly not into it. He’s sort of bugged that he had to take her, and I wish they hadn’t bought front row seats–20 rows back would’ve been better, or let your wife go with her girlfriends instead. Then sometimes I’ll play these places where the promoter puts a barricade in front of the audience and the stage is seven feet tall and the front row is 25 yards away. I want to see their faces. It’s not like they’re going to riot my concert and pull out handguns and start firing away at one another. It’s just not gonna happen. Very rarely someone will get super excited and jump on stage, but it’s really not a big deal. Occasionally promoters will put these sumo wrestlers in the front with scowls on their faces; here I am, trying to connect with the audience, and I have Hulk Hogan staring them down and daring them to have a good time. It’s a drag when that happens. I like as much interaction with the audience as I can get. Another funny thing that happens, particularly in larger, civic venues, is there’s a contract for an interpreter for the hearingimpaired, which is great, but I remember once I did a gig with Jimmy Buffett and he couldn’t do a show without playing the song “Let’s Get Drunk and Screw.” We were all watching the woman, who was literally signing every word he sang, and it’s exactly what you think it would be. She was thrusting her body around with sexual gestures, and she’d obviously given it a lot of thought. I think she studied up quite a bit before hand because she asked for the set list. She was definitely ready for that gig. JAMES TAYLOR Friday, April 12, 7:30pm Maui Arts & Cultural Center One Cameron Way, Kahului 808-242-SHOW (7469) Mauiarts.org ■ editor@mauitime.com

Empty Bowl Project How eating at Star Noodle will help fight hunger on Maui

BY JEN RUSSO

This is how you fight hunger

F

ood and art join with vigor this Saturday at the Second Annual Empty Bowl Project, which will be held at Star Noodle on Kupohi Street in Lahaina. It’s an opportunity for you to help in a bid to raise money to

stave off the very serious issue of hunger on Maui. Proceeds from the event will go to Maui Food Bank and Hale Mahaolu. Four hundred of the aptly named “empty bowls,” handcrafted by the Maui Organization of the Ceramic Arts, will be

sold for $25 each. Buy one and you get to fill it with all the fixins at the noodle bar, designed by none other than Maui’s Top Chef and James Beard Award nominee Sheldon Simeon. He will have his signature Star Noodle dishes, including Buckwheat Soba, Hapa Ramen and Star Udon, ready to fill your bowl, along with all the toppings and veggies to maximize your noodle experience. “The bowl you purchase is a keepsake to remind you of all the ‘empty bowls’ in the world, and all proceeds collected from the bowl purchase will be donated to the Maui Food Bank and Hale Mahaolu,” said Kaala Buenconsejo of Star Noodle. “Be there when the gates open! Bowls sold out in the first hour at last year’s event.” What’s more, all your favorite Star Noodle dishes like Garlic Noodles, Nori Chicken, Pork Buns, Veggie Buns, Miso Salmon, Scallop Shots, Yakitori Sticks (chicken or beef) and Pohole Salad will also be served. For beverages, there will be elegant cocktails in their lounge for you to pair with your bowl of noodles as well as their exquisite wine, beer and sakes. Select sweets

will also be available. Live entertainment under the stars will electrify the event’s outdoor, street fair-like atmosphere. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Sheldon and his Star Noodle crew will also unveil their new food truck–named “Starstruck”– along with a number of dishes for you to sample. Empty Bowl memento tees will also be for sale. Empty Bowl Projects have connected artists and eaters to raise awareness and millions of dollars for world hunger throughout the U.S. and Canada. All the events are independently produced in their communities. ■ EMPTY BOWL PROJECT Sat, April 13 5:30-8:30pm Star Noodle (286 Kupuohi St., Lahaina) 808-667-5400 Starnoodle.com jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

‘Fresher Ahi’ Where two braddahs (and Kathy Collins) play any kind characta BY JEN RUSSO PHOTO BY JACK GRACE PHOTOGRAPHY

This weekend, local theater at the Steppingstone Theater in Kahului will be filled with the colorful language of Hawaiian pidgin. That’s because Fresher Ahi launches the second part of their series of three plays. It was a huge hit last year when Derek Nakagawa and Francis Tau’a, the Da cast playwrights and actors behind the show, got into 10 different characters to bring the story of twin brothers Andrew and Anden into the local limelight. “David Johnston initially approached us with the idea to create a Greater Tuna with local flavor,” says Nakagawa. “More of a straight comedy. We were making a show that had local flavor accessible to local people.” Nakagawa says part of his motivation was to create a production that could include him. “There are not a lot of shows for local people to be cast in,” says Nakagawa.

H

o brah, you wen go see dat dakine Fresher Ahi dis weekend or wat? Some funny da bugga waz. Brah, we neva could stop lafing cuz doz guys play any kine characta. Dey even dress up in wahine kine clothes. Brah, Kathy Collins play one mean MMA guy, he stay all nutz. My mudda dem like go, bumbay we stay heading to QKC, so we can grine Koho’s befoa da show. Come if you like, we stay go buy tickets an den.

“Especially if the director is looking for someone to play a particular character for a script that is set in the East coast.” Kathy Collins is a new addition to the cast this year. She will play six new characters. “It just exceeded my expectations,” says Collins. “You just look down to see your costume so you know who you are. There are three incredible dressers that are dressing us instantaneously and seamlessly. You really depend on them.” Nakagawa, Taua and Collins credit David Johnston, the executive and artistic director for MAPA and Fresher Ahi, for the play’s sharp timing. Collins says that Johnston brought the production one step higher. “Being true to the spirit of what we did, it’s not formulaic,” says Nakagawa. “David is good at finding the core relationships between the characters. David digs for the reason.” Also, you don’t have to speak pidgin to enjoy Fresher Ahi. The play’s local culture and themes are easily accessible to locals and visitors alike. “We are making our own style of what’s been done,” says Nakagawa. “Inspiration from Lee Cataluna, Andy Bumatai, Rep

News.

Replinger and Da Braddahs for sure, but these shows even harken back to the roots of theater, Greek theater. Men have always played women back in the day.” Nakagawa says one of his biggest theatrical rewards is looking into the audience and seeing the big blalah laughing his okole off with his ohana. “You get used to seeing the same people in the audience,” he says. “There are local folks that have never come to a play that hopefully will come to this one. It feels really good.” ■ FRESHER AHI Now through April 28 $16 adults/$14 seniors $12 students (18 and under) Fri & Sat, 7:30pm; Sun 2pm Steppingstone Playhouse (Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, 2nd level) 808-244-8760 Mauiacademy.org jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E news, visit MauiTime’s events blog at: mauivents.com

A FEW NOTES ABOUT BALLOT STUFFING: While most people play it straight, every year a few nefarious folks attempt to stuff the ballot box. To cut down on this, and to ensure the results are fair and accurate, here are a few rules:

★ MULTIPLE BALLOTS IN THE SAME HANDWRITING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

‘42’ Jackie Robinson deserved a better film than this BY BARRY WURST II

‘42’

★★★★★

Rated PG-13 / 128 Min.

I

t’s hard to believe there’s never been a movie made about Jackie Robinson, outside of The Jackie Robinson Story from 1950. That movie at least had the great baseball Hall of Famer playing himself. But Robinson’s life, a remarkable journey of an African American who broke baseball’s color barrier and played for the Montreal Royals and Brooklyn Dodgers, is long overdue for a film bio. Spike Lee reportedly spent years trying to get a film about Robinson made but was turned down by studio executives, who wouldn’t allow him a reasonable budget and didn’t believe a film about a black baseball hero would sell. Finally, Brian Helgeland, an Oscar winning screenwriter and sometimes director, wrote and helmed this affectionate tribute to Robinson and managed to cast Harrison Ford in an unlikely supporting role for star power. The result

should have been one of the finest of baseball movies but instead is only great in parts. Newcomer Chadwick Boseman plays Robinson, portraying his life during his tough debut season as a professional ball player during the 1947 season with the Dodgers. According to the film, Major League Baseball in 1947 had 400 players and 399 of them were white, resulting in Robinson’s brilliant athleticism and love for the game being constantly overlooked by racist team players (on the opposing team as well as his own) and fans. Ford plays Branch Rickey, the Dodgers’ manager who ignored the country’s racial segregation and brought Robinson into his team, for reasons both financial and personal. For the first 20 minutes, the film felt like a lost cause. The establishing scenes are so bland and hokey, the movie itself appears to have been made in the 1940’s. It helps that the scenes on the baseball diamond are engaging, though other baseball movies have made the game look far more exciting and cinematic than what Helgeland comes up with.

Good try though

The casting of Ford as Dickey will likely divide many in the audience, as the often understated actor here gives an often hammy performance, often sounding like a Clint Eastwood impression, down to the growls and curmudgeonly attitude. But Ford’s performance and the film itself grow stronger, once we get to the darker aspects of the story. Boseman captures Robinson’s fierce determination to keep the casual racism of those around him from ruining his game or his inner reserves. Yet I never felt like the screenplay lets us know who he is. Ditto his wife Rachel, played endearingly by Nicole Beharie, nor his marriage. No mention is made of his military career, childhood, education or children. I’m glad the film has as many scenes of action on the baseball diamond as

it does, but 42 only portrays a sliver of Robinson’s life. Robinson’s achievements needed a longer, fuller movie. There is a powerful scene at the midpoint, where the racist coach of an imposing team (bravely played by Alan Tudyk) viciously taunts a composed but flustered Robinson, who unloads his barely contained rage out of eyesight. All of Ford’s scenes with Boseman demonstrate writing and acting so good, it’s like seeing glimpses of a better, edgier drama. There’s also a nice turn by Lucas Black as Pee Wee Reese, one of Robinson’s few teammates in his corner and a handful of crowd-pleasing moments shine through in this admirable but overly formulaic film. I’d still like to see Spike Lee’s take on this story. At one point, Robinson says, “you will remember me.” Robinson, yes. This movie, not so much.■

We Like Sign Language You Too! Horoscope

BY CAERIEL CRESTIN

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Maybe try putting on some rose-colored glasses, or carrying around a fog machine. This week, I recommended to Pisces that they work on piercing illusions to get to the heart of things. But you don’t have a problem with being directed. You’re a Ram, after all. Unfortunately, your amazing ability to get down to the stripped, glamourless nitty-gritty can be a handicap at times, when it causes you to miss out on some beautiful, life-enriching subtlety. Look, you can lower your head and charge at all your goals next week. This week, stop to sniff the flowers, munch the scenery, and enjoy the view.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Apart from animals that have been trained otherwise, most dog fights are primarily for show—each pup is interested in establishing dominance with tons of snarling and teeth-baring. Any injuries suffered in the process are almost always superficial and accidental, and once it’s over, it’s over. Of course, if you interrupt them—as most overanxious dog owners are wont—they’ll persistently try to reunite until their directed mayhem has determined who’s on top. Conflict isn’t automatically bad. This week, at least consider the idea that letting those you love have it out may be better in the long-term than any intervention you could come up with now. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) One of your secret—and deliciously subtle—superpowers has been a bit overused of late. I’m referring to your ability to instantly put people at ease. You can phone someone you haven’t seen since high school and within seconds have them chatting familiarly, as if you just had Algebra together yesterday. Unfortunately, this quick-fix type talent can’t heal a badly eroded friendship in the long-term. Only real investment of your time, love, and energy can do that. This week, leave your charisma out of it, and apply at least two of those to the friendships that need it most. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Enough with the entertaining detours, Cancer. Although all these random or spontaneous side trips have been amusing and fruitful—especially the one where you returned with an actual person—it’s time to mostly resume your usual rhythms and routines, so you can figure out how to incorporate all this new stuff (and new people) into your old life with all your old stuff and your old friends. Fearlessly open your mind and life, and prepare for your worlds—new and old—to come together, finally. Don’t worry: Both will be better for it, I promise. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Take the beer goggles off. You can’t afford to have such distorted perception right now. It’s important that your vision guiding both sexual and romantic impulses be as clear as possible. It’s fine to indulge occasionally in dalliances that are obviously not in your long-term best interest. But don’t let them get out of hand. If your f**kbuddy is leaving a toothbrush at your place and has become a daily texter, s/he might think things are more serious than they are. Set them straight, before things get too messy for even an inveterate emotion-hog like you. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Among the Padaung tribe in Southeast Asia, women receive their first neck-stretching ring at a very early age, and get a new band every year or two, which appears to lengthen their necks dramatically. You remind me of them: you, too, have a long tradition of, well, sticking your neck out for people, each time stretching a little further than the last. Like the Padaung, it does make you strangely beautiful. Also like them, it makes you vulnerable. (If a Padaung woman violates tribal rules, her rings are removed, forcing her to either lie down or asphyxiate, because her atrophied neck muscles can no longer hold up her head.) This ancient tribal tradition will probably die out within a generation or two, because young Padaung women are refusing to don the rings. Won’t you end yours, too? Once you do, you’ll learn there are ways to be helpful (and beautiful) that don’t involve such extremes.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Don’t you have some new neighbors you could be welcoming? Come on, you know you’re dying to just be nice to someone. It’s been forever since you last prepared a basket of fresh fruit and cheese, or brought someone a friendly bottle of cheap champagne. You have an excess of niceness right now—so much that it’s kind of a problem. Before you drive your dearest familiar friends nuts with your need to lavish attention and delight on them, let off a little of that uniquely Libran pressure by fawning over some strangers for a few hours. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Lot’s wife, when forced to flee the destruction of her beloved city (Sodom), looked back. She was consumed with sentimental grief—and punished for it, by being transformed into a pillar of salt. I bet you identify—forced to leave behind something (or someone) you really loved, it’s hard to resist trying to recapture the moments that made you so happy. Don’t worry: doing so won’t result in some crappy Old Testament punishment. But it won’t help you, either—since there really is no going back in this case, trying to (even just mentally) can only make you bitter. Onward, baby—look ahead and only ahead, at least until you’ve gone around another bend in the road.

tattoos by Rachel G

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Maybe once upon a time there were pure beginnings, but these days there’s no room for something new without ending something old. You need to make space for it. It’s a good time to bring something to culmination that’s been cluttering your life half-finished for far too long. There are at least a couple tantalizing new things (or refreshing new takes on old things) that are not only exciting, but good for you—and they’re just waiting for an opening, one that can only be provided once you achieve closure with some of the old crap. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Although my musical taste stays pretty consistently eclectic, I’ve found that during any given time period of my life, one particular album or artist rises to prominence, becoming my primary soundtrack for that chapter. Then, whenever I hear that music again later, it evokes powerful memories of the time I was obsessed with it. The reason I bring it up is because there are some old lessons you learned ages ago that desperately need relearning or review. Isn’t there some way (a special track or certain type of food?) you could bring back the times when those experiences were what your life was all about? If you can’t sufficiently recall those lessons, you’ll be forced to learn them again, the hard way.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Although you’d rather plan your next pleasure trip or goof-off session in elaborate detail, it might behoove you to put a little time into the more serious affairs of your life. There’s such a thing as too much freedom, you know. It’s alright to let yourself go wild every now and then or explore the inglorious depths of slackdom, but eventually—considering your lofty goals—you need to get your shit together. Why now? The stars are lining up a shortcut to one of your most highly anticipated dreams, but you’ll only be able to take advantage of it if you’re geared up and ready to leap into action. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Although you’ve long reserved the right to be confused, I beg you to waive it this week. Despite your claims that muddled mystification is your natural state—stemming from your psychic ability to see more facets of a situation than most—I believe you also have a keen aptitude to slice open the gauzy veils of pretty illusion to get to the sometimes unpleasant reality beneath. Although I admire your most precious talent—the ability to perceive so many layers at once—it’s simply not cut out for life in the fast lane of real life, which you’re required to visit (to pass the slowpokes who’re preventing your progress). In other words: less scenery, more velocity.
