Coconut Wireless officials are in awe of the big machine. “The men and women of the Maui Police Department are very appreciative of the Mayor, his staff and the Maui County Council for this assistance with the acquisition of the Bearcat Armored vehicle,” said MPD Chief Gary Yabuta in a July 2 news release. “This vehicle not only provides greater protection and tactical advantage for our officers, it makes Maui County a safer community.”
AND MAUI PD GETS A NEW ARMORED TRUCK, TOO Speaking of pretty sweet benefits, have you guys seen the giant fortress that will double as the new Kihei Police Station going up over by Monsanto’s South Maui operation? That’s almost as pretty as the Harley Davidson Motor Trike that superstar parking enforcer otherwise known as Maui Police Officer Keith Taguma is now using to roll around Wailuku Town

on his parking enforcement rounds. Ever since we first saw Taguma trade in his little Interceptor golf cart for the bike, we started wondering what new toys might be on their way to the department that considers photographing police officers in public places to be a crime. And last week, we got an answer: the MPD now gets to play with a military-style armored truck. No joke–this is an actual military-style armored vehicle, made by Pittsfield, Massachusetts-based Lenco, which has built thousands of these things. Known as the BearCat (which is actually an acronym standing for “Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter-Attack Truck”), the truck is already in use by a bunch of big city police departments around the nation like Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Dallas, Miami, San Francisco and, of course, Honolulu. The truck’s armor is a half-inch of military specification steel and can stop .50 caliber bullets. It can mount spotlights, sirens, a battering ram, thermal cameras, a turret and can carry about 10 troops (sorry–police officers). “Having proven itself in the field, the BearCat has repelled multiple attacks from assault weapons, providing SWAT teams unprecedented with its life saving armor,” states the Lenco website. “The BearCat
has enabled law enforcement agencies nationwide to perform critical response and rescue operations in a safe, secure and highly mobile armored vehicle.” Of course, protection of that caliber (ha!) comes at a steep price. The truck cost the county about $280,000 reported The Maui News, which for that price better include leather seats, AC and a Blu-Ray player. While we can wonder how much use this machine will get on our island, county
In not really a surprise vote, on July 5 the Maui County Council voted 5-3 (Don Guzman was excused) to authorize a formal investigation into what Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa’s people knew and when they knew it concerning the decision to demolish the old Wailuku Post Office. The council voted to let their own Policy and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee (which is just made up of the councilmembers) handle the matter, rather than kick it over to the new independent County Auditor, which is usually the guy who takes care of disagreements like this. As we reported in our June 27 cover story “Is The Maui County Council Nuts?” public documents released by the mayor’s office

As I’m sure most people on Maui have noticed, we live in delicate economic times. The Hawaii Tourism Authority has released regular reports for the last year showing ever greater numbers of visitors coming to Maui and the rest of the state, but for many individuals and small businesses that aren’t tied to the big resorts, times are definitely not easy. The economy is nowhere near as bad as it was four or five years ago, but we’re also not living in boom times. In other words, it’s the perfect time to give all cops statewide a giant raise. Few other workers will see anything like a 16.8 percent salary hike over the next four years, but then again, they don’t have a union like the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO) backing them up. Seriously, if they don’t already, every union in the nation ought to look to SHOPO for guidance. Those guys, who represent 2,200 cops statewide, get things done. This is the same union, that when confronted with some meddling University of Hawaii journalism students who asked for Honolulu PD’s Internal Affairs records back in the early 1990s and went all the way to state Supreme Court to get them, instead turned up lobbying heat on the Legislature and got a special exemption written into the state open records law preventing disclosure of such things as the names and status of disciplined cops. And while I know that cops around the state haven’t gotten a raise since July 2011, how many workers around Hawaii have seen salary hikes of any real size? But what’s really amusing about the news of the raises is how public officials–who tend to enjoy being the same side as the police department–are dealing with it. Not the ambivalence in the quote Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa gave to KITV for their story on the raises: “While we were surprised at the level of this award, we feel that the arbitration process needs to be respected,” Arakawa said. “The arbitrator was given information by all participants and knew full well the circumstances of the counties and the state and we fully support his decision.”

show how administration officials spent the last two years telling various County Council committees that they were going to demolish the building, and it was only in February–during the demolition–that Councilmember Mike White suddenly asked how the administration was paying for it. As of now, there’s no word on how long the investigation will take, how much it will cost or how much time the Council Members will spend asking what they were doing while the administration briefed them time and again about their plans to demolish the building. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

Our Spay Neuter Assistance Program at SPCA Maui is designed to be quick, easy and no hassle too.” SPCA Maui is a volunteer-staffed nonprofit, which reports that Maui has four times more animals entering their countysponsored shelter annually than the national average. OLD MAUI HIGH PAINTING UNVEILED

Old Maui High School plans to commemorate its 100th birthday at the Hamakuapoko campus with a Centennial Celebration Sept. 13-15, at which a newly-discovered painting of the old campus’ historic auditorium will be the highlighted keepsake. Discovered by Jeff Reiss at a yard sale, the watercolor of Old Maui High School’s auditorium/gym–fondly referred to as “The Barn”–was painted by Kunio Ogawa, a 1935 Maui High School grad. Ogawa took up painting after serving in the U.S. Army’s 100th Infantry Battalion and re-created many of Maui’s landscapes and buildings on canvases until his death at the age of 92. After purchasing the painting years ago, Reiss has now donated it to Friends of Old Maui High School. They plan on creating a limited-edition glass display paperweight of the painting to sell at the Centennial Celebration. The original painting will also be on display at the event, along with other Saber memorabilia.

The weekend event will celebrate a century of building community and is expected to bring together more than a thousand Maui High alumni, families and friends. The celebration will include a traditional luau, special displays and even performances by former cheerleaders and talented alumni. NEW DOUBLE DECK MAUI BUS HAS PATRIOTIC SEATS Remember back in March the County of Maui announced that it was adding a big new (used) $378,362 double decker bus to its Maui Bus fleet? Well, on Saturday, July 6, the bus finally went into service. And while the county had sent out numerous photos of the pastel white, green and blue flowery exterior of the bus back in March, they were clearly holding out on us. SPCA HAS SPAY/NEUTER DOG DEAL FOR JULY The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Maui in Wailuku is offering a deal to spay and neuter all dogs over 40 pounds for only $40 through the month of July. has begun restoration efforts on the Nakula Natural Area Reserve. So far, a fenced section of 420 acres has been completed and is already showing signs of regeneration through the emergence of keiki koa trees. As part of their continued efforts, MFBRP seeks to plant nine main plant species in the reserve and have already collected thousands of native seeds. The Native Nursery, LLC of Kula has begun growing these trees that will eventually be planted in Nakula. Enough seed was collected to produce 7,600 native tree seedlings, but the project currently only has funding to grow and plant 6,500. MFBRP is seeking community support for the remaining 1,100 trees. To donate to their restoration efforts, visit their campaign website. What’s more, the new (used) bus has 90 such seats, which is about double the capacity of the county’s current buses. Undoubtedly hoping to prevent mobs of people from storming the new bus as it tries to go about its business, county spokesmen downplayed the new seats in their July 5 press release. “The double-decker bus will service the Kihei Islander #2 route, which starts at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 6,” stated the news release. “Bus fares for the doubledecker will be the same as those for all other buses that are part of the Maui Bus fleet ($2 per single boarding or $4 per day).” -Anthony Pignataro ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

News Of The Weird Despite Chicago’s recent crisis of gangrelated street murders, the Roseland Community Hospital in a tough south-side neighborhood is on the verge of closing because of finances, and community groups have been energetically campaigning to keep it open. Joining civic leaders in the quest is the Black Disciples street gang, whose co-founder Don Acklin begged in June for the hospital to remain open, explaining, “It’s bad enough we’re out here harming each other.” Besides wounded gang members needing emergency care, said Acklin, closing would amount to “genocide” because of all the innocent people exposed to crossfire.
another car in a parking-space dispute, noted that the victim gave officers little help. The man could not tell officers the model car that hit him, and certainly not a license plate number, but he “was able to give a detailed description of the suspect’s cleavage.” No arrest was reported. And Colombian prisoner Giovanni Rebolledo was serving a 60-year sentence (as a member of the “Los Topos” gang charged with extortion, kidnapping and torture) when he escaped and decided on an extreme identity change in order to move about in the country. He became “Rosalinda,” complete with, according to Colombia Reports news service, “impressive” breast implants, but nonetheless was identified in May in a routine traffic stop and arrested.

A warehouse in Landover, Md., maintained by a company working on contract for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, contained “secret rooms” of furniture and equipment described as “man caves” for company employees. The EPA inspector general announced the discovery in May, and the government confiscated TVs, refrigerators, couches, personal photos, pin-ups, magazines and videos that the contractor’s personnel brought in while ostensibly “working” on agency business.

“[Supermodels] is the one exception [to U.S. immigration policy] that we all scratch our heads about,” said a Brookings Institution policy analyst, speaking to Bloomberg Businessweek in May. Foreign-born sports stars and entertainers are fast-tracked with American work permits under one system, but supermodels were excluded from that and must thus compete (successfully, it turns out) with physicists and nuclear engineers to earn visas among the 65,000 slots available only to “skilled workers with college degrees.” As such, around 250 beauties are admitted every year. (The most recent attempt to get supermodels their own visa category was championed in 2005 and 2007 by, appropriately, then-U.S.-Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York.)
POLITICS, TEXAS-STYLE
WE LIKE YOU TOO!
In Lytle, Texas, in May, just 33 people voted for candidates for three openings on the school board, including the only voter who cast a ballot in District 1. Christina Mercado was the 1-0 winner, but someone else voted for her. Mercado cannot vote for District 1 candidates because she does not live there, and neither does the one candidate who opposed her. However, according to Texas law, Mercado can legally represent District 1 on the school board.

In Kobe, Japan, in May, an unemployed, 32-year-old man carried out a minor theft (stealing a wallet from a parked scooter) apparently just to be locked up in the world famous city. Besides being the home of Kobe beef, it’s acclaimed for its French, Chinese and octopus cuisines, and in fact, Kobe’s Nagata Ward Precinct is renowned for the special gourmet boxed meals prepared by local bento shops, delivered daily to prisoners, which the thief said was foremost on his mind.
NOT SO HOT SHOT COPS In May, an Orlando Sentinel columnist demanded a federal investigation into the 2010 police killing of Torey Breedlove in Orlando’s Pine Hills neighborhood, noting that killing the unarmed Breedlove somehow required 137 shots, with cops missing on at least 115. The columnist added that the Justice Department is currently investigating a Cleveland, Ohio, case in which local police killed two unarmed men but coincidentally also required 137 shots. In both cases, the officers were exonerated after local investigators determined the officers believed the suspects were armed.
POLITICS, WHITBYSTYLE Whitby, U.K., town councilman Simon Parkes, 58, confessed to a reporter in June that he had had an extramarital affair–in fact, an extraterrestrial extramarital affair–with the nine-foot-tall Cat Queen, and that she had born him a child. Parkes said the Cat Queen is biding her time until technology is available to bring her and the child to Earth. Said Parkes, “There are plenty of people in my position who don’t choose to come out and say it because they are terrified it will destroy their careers.” Parkes said his wife knows about his periodic meetings with the Cat Queen and is “very unhappy, clearly.” ■ chuck@mauitime.com

he thing pro kiteboarder Jesse Richman remembers most about his first jump isn’t the accelerated speed at which he was moving over the surface of the ocean. It isn’t the size of the kite that was billowing 70 feet above him or the force of the wind trying to rip that same kite from his relaxed grip. The thing Richman remembers most about his first jump is the silence. “You hear the water splashing when you’re riding, and then it just goes silent,” said Richman. “And you’re like, ‘What? I’m in the air! What?’ It’s the most addicting feeling ever. I’ve spent my life kiting just to get that feeling back.” Richman has literally grown up in the sport. The Haiku-native was introduced to kiteboarding at nine years old when his dad’s friend handed him a kite and told him he would be a world champion one day. He would go to the beach with his dad and older brother Shawn, flying over the water and hoping they “didn’t hit anything too hard.” Twelve years later, kiting is grown from the new fad to Rich-

travel for kite boarding, I was going to world tour events and starting to go from last place to 17th place to 9th place. It just kind of evolved and before I knew it I was on top on and off for a while.” As someone who’s witnessed that growth, Shelly Franco of Hi-Tech Maui is excited and supportive of what Richman and his brother have done for the kiting community on Maui and for the sport in general. “I’ve gone out with [Shawn and Jesse] on some gnarly days when everyone else was just sitting on the beach.” said Franco. “They were never afraid to go out and just try it, and they are always happy and super stoked to be out there. It’s been fun to watch them progress. They make a dynamic team, and they’re always trying something new” Wearing a T-shirt repping Naish, his sponsor, with a pair of sunglasses poking out from his brown shaggy hair, Richman looks like the classic young surfer dude injected with a healthy dose of passion and drive. During our interview, the Starbucks coffee cup he held seemed inconspicuous

cated kiter. As you can imagine, the insane heights paired with the added flips and loops that make up a kiteboarding trick produce equally as gnarly wipeouts. When I met with Richman, his left hand was braced with a wrist guard from a tweak that he said had caused some ligament issues. That was just the latest entry in a series of injuries. Shrugging it off, he described it as “part of the territory.” Along with every event Richman competes in come the nerves you would assume he has when performing stunts that have him flying through the air at tremendous speeds. His favorite trick, a kiteloop front-mobe, includes a portion where his kite is actually yanking his body straight towards the water before he somehow pulls it up above his head, hopefully catching him up before he hits the water. No big deal, right? But instead of pushing the fear out of his head, a method he says many of his fellow competitors use, Richman said he craves it. “That fear definitely gets into my head,
and I live for that,” said Richman. “I try to embrace it as much as I can. I try to put myself in the situation that is as scary as it can be without dying. I try and hold that line and sometimes you’ll fall over and that’s when you crash and get injured, but hopefully you walk away from everyone and get back up fighting to go even harder.” As he continues to compete in kiting events around the world, the self-proclaimed beach bum will always call Maui home, forever remaining his favorite place to kite. But more than competing, Richman’s passion lies in pushing the sport to new heights, broadening its borders and trying to discover all a person hooked up to a kite can really accomplish. “I want to figure out how high we can go with it, then go higher,” said Richman. “Figure out the biggest waves we can ride, then find a bigger wave. Just try and push the limits of the sport and push my own limits at the same time, and I’ll be stoked.” ■ editor@mauitime.com

interesting to realize I accomplished one of my goals and I’m not somebody different. Every day it isn’t like life is better, everyday is what you make of it.” On the world tour, Richman had the opportunity to travel and kite at exotic locations all over the world, including Europe, the Caribbean and South America. With all the travelling, Richman’s love and appreciation for Maui has continued to grow even more. In fact, it’s Maui’s affinity for drawing in top water-sport athletes that’s apparently kept Richman’s own international success from getting to his head. “I come back here and I look around on the beach and I’m like, ‘There’s the best wind surfer in the world, there’s four of the top surfers,’” said Richman. “You think you’re cool and stuff then you look at everybody else here and you’re just one of the guys out there charging. But it’s really cool; it’s definitely humbled me just growing up here.” While Richman streaks along the water with ease, making every flip look as effortless as tying your shoelaces, kiteboarding remains shrouded in mystery for many outside viewers. Often regarded as a dangerous sport, Richman thinks it has to do with the fact that for someone who has never tried it before, there is nothing compare it to. “People can relate to a dirt bike because they’ve probably ridden a bicycle at some point, and they can understand how it works,” said Richman. “People relate to a surfboard probably from a skateboard. Kiteboarding is different. You’re harnessing the wind, and that’s your engine.” Using all that natural horsepower, Richman reaches anywhere from 30 to over 100 foot elevations on a good trick. Basically, vertigo isn’t an option for this dedi-

in a grip that is used to reining in ripping gales. As he described kiting, I could see the excitement light up his eyes. Then as he waved his arms and included sound effects, I could almost feel the rush for myself. Richman has made a successful career for himself, earning the titles of KPWT World Champion in 2008 and IKA Overall Kitesurfing World Champion in 2009. In February, he competed in the 2013 Red Bull King of the Air kiteboarding event in Cape Town, South Africa, one of the sport’s biggest events that was held at Ho‘okipa from 1999 to 2005 before going on a seven-year hiatus. Different from other kiting competitions that run on technical judging criteria, King of the Air is all about going as big as you can. Along with 23 other kiters from all over the world and in front of thousands of onlookers, Richman pushed his tricks to greater heights, becoming His Royal Red Bull Highness. “The last few years I’ve kind of stepped back from the normal world tour and tried to take all the tricks that they do and do them at a high elevation,” said Richman, “and make every trick I do look really intense and hard and fun and exciting and make it appealing to everybody. Because it’s boring to watch somebody do boring tricks.” The excitement he felt from watching kiting tricks was what got him stoked on kiting in the first place. From the time he was a kid, Richman would hang out with all the surfers, hoping to one day become one of them and be able to kite competitively. Today, as a pro kiter, Richman has not only found great success, but has also fulfilled his childhood dream. “I kind of set out to do what I wanted to do and nothing changed,” he said. “It was

We Dish On Kahului Diners For instance, there’s the cheeseburger deluxe. It’s a simple handmade beef patty with American cheese, soft white bun, lettuce, tomato and onion for just $3.90. In fact, most of their 18 sandwiches are priced under $4. The pile of fried rice is huge–Sheik’s menu boasts four scoops rice on that plate, which costs $9 and includes plenty of Spam and bacon along with veggies and egg.The gravy-topped and very meaty pork sandwich, served with mashed potato from their “special sandwich” selection, is also very popular and costs just $6.50. Granted, Sheik’s isn’t the kind of spot where you experiment much with the menu but my recent visit yielded a try of their breaded teriyaki. It’s much as described in the name, where you take the familiar thinly sliced and sweetly marinated teriyaki, then bread the steak and pan fry it. Their version comes piled high with two scoops rice and one mac salad. The steak has a nice crisp texture from the breading and plenty of sweet soy flavor. Sheik’s still has a fountain section–a nod to

he explosion of gastro pub grub wouldn’t be worth its weight in gravy without the low brow diners that built the foundation that sustains our love of comfort foods. And while I share The Food Network’s enthusiasm for Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, but I couldn’t help but notice that the Monday installment of Triple D Goes Hawaiian missed Maui completely. Perhaps Fieri’s production company couldn’t fork out the dough for interisland flights. In any case, since Fieri is apparently too high maka-maka for our little greasy spoons, I’ve taken the liberty of highlighting a few of Kahului’s finest dives to make up for triple D’s loss. (Note: I specifically left out Wailuku and other parts of the island for a later installment.)

JACK’S INN 312 Alamaha St., Kahului 808-877-3610 You’ve probably driven by Jack’s Inn lots of times without ever stopping. Its location is super low-pro, sandwiched between Ace Hardware and Iwado Realty on Alamaha Street in the heart of Kahului’s industrial area. Its unassuming mirrored doors look like you could be entering an office but once inside you know you’ve come to the right place for ono banana pancakes, tasty loco moco and the fried rice special. Take a seat where you can. The good food doesn’t stop with their breakfast eggs and bacon either; there are omelettes, a miso special, sandwiches, burgers and beef stew. If you want lunch, they start serving it at 5am and breakfast service lasts until they close at 2pm. Everything is really reasonably priced, averaging around $6 for a simple breakfast. Be sure to check their specials board, which are packed with extras. Peach pancakes, kim chee hamburger steak and fried akule were just some of the extra goodies on the board the last time I

OYAKU TEI 180 Wakea Ave., Kahului 808-873-0100 Technically not a greasy spoon, Oyaku Tei is one of the last ohana Okazu type spots left in Kahului still offering great local breakfasts. The breakfast bento costs about $7 and is packed with teriyaki, Spam, Portuguese sausage, herbed omelette, hot dog, rice, furikake, and housepickled daikon. It’s basically just grab and go. The menu is mainly in Japanese, but the breakfasts include American basics and local foods like French toast, eggs, meat and a croissant sandwich, all priced between $6 and $7. With the Spam musubi, they sandpiece of Spam between a pressed wich a pie rice and blanket it in seaweed for just loaf of ric $1.75. SHEIK’S 97 S. Wakea Ave., Kahului 808-877-0121 The menu says they’ve been serving the greater Central Maui area since 1968. This Wakea Street landmark is next to the Ohana gas station and right behind the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center. If you want something fancier you’re in the wrong place because Sheik’s hasn’t changed a whole lot in their 45 years and won’t anytime soon. The diner has plenty of old school charm with their linoleum tables, booths, vinyl chairs and louvered windows. Some say their pancakes are better than Tasty Crust, but everyone agrees their saimin and fried chicken is the bomb.Their kitchen has plenty of options to please the whole family, and feeding them won’t break the bank here.

Foodie News SHERATON SHAVE ICE It’s been so hot lately that I’m sure you’re craving some of our island’s favorite frozen treat–shave ice. I bet the last time you dug into one of those colorful sweet icy mounds in a cone, there was a wish in the back of your mind that it was spiked with a little pau hana power. Well, Brandon Maeda– the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa’s director of food and beverage–apparently had the same thought. “Hawaiian shave ice is a popular treat for kids of all ages,” says Maeda. “We are pleased to bring this island favorite to the resort and have it appeal to our adult guests in a whole new way with

Sheldon Brown will play Saturday from 5pm to 8pm and then again on Sunday from 4pm to 7pm. The Fatburger franchise started back in 1952 in California by Lovey Yancey, who apparently loved a great burger. Her menu is still largely the same, with burgers made from fresh ground chuck sirloin and loaded with great toppings as well as old fashioned shakes (made with Roselani Ice Cream) and divine onion rings. Pacific Rim Everything about this movie is a huge, clanking mess
Pacific Rim ★★★★★
Rated PG-13 / 131 Min.
T
o quote the Wizard of Oz, Pacific Rim is “a clinking, clanking, clattering collection of caliginous junk.” This giant robots versus giant monsters movie is the latest from visionary director Guillermo Del Toro and it’s easily the least of his otherwise stellar body of work. Giant monsters from the bottom of the ocean, called Kaijus, are terrorizing humankind. Brave warriors battle the massive beasts in skyscraper-sized robots called Jaegers. I know this because the opening title card of the movie told me so. Then, it proceeded to tell me more about the Jaegers and Kaijus, bombarding me with so much additional information that I started wondering if I should be taking notes for a test later in the movie. Idris Elba plays the leader of the warriors, who work in pairs while manning the huge Jaegers. When they attack the huge Kaijus they make a huge, huge mess.
Had this just been wall-to-wall action with fewer humans running around, it might have worked. Instead, you have a cast of actors who either look silly while trying to be serious or obnoxiously overact. Aside from Elba and Rinko Kikuchi (the Oscar nominated star of Babel), who do their best, I wanted the rest of the characters to be eaten immediately. Star Charlie Hunnam gives a terrible performance as the insufferable hot shot who learns to be a team player. Almost as bad are Charlie Dey and Burn Gorman, wildly unfunny as scientists investigating how to defeat the monsters once and for all. Now a few logical questions. Why do the Jaeger warriors have to battle the monsters inside the robots? Why not fight the monsters by remote, ala Avatar? By not physically being in the giant machines, it might cut down on the growing body count. Also, the two pilots commanding each robot are required to “drift,” or mindmeld, in which their thoughts and memories share “drift compatibility” while they partake in battle. The mind melding is clearly a problem, as evidenced in a scene where a character’s vivid flashback causes a robot to draw its weapon at an unfortunate moment. All this gobbledygook about

???
“drifting” and the mindset of the Jaeger controller’s over-complicates what should have been a simple premise. Even Real Steel made its robots vs. robots concept easy to grasp while retaining a human center. The movie’s best scene, hands down, is a martial arts battle between Kikuchi and Hunnam, in which they attack one another with bow staffs to test their “drift” potential. This scene of hand-to-hand combat between humans easily overshadows all the CGI smackdowns that follow. Also squashed in the movie’s laborious action sequences are a few nice touches of humor. Del Toro, the poet director of Pan’s Labyrinth, Cronos, Mimic and the Hellboy movies is nowhere to be found here. The monsters in this picture lack the perverse beauty of his other films and the action is often little more than a CGI blur of color and movement (much like Speed Racer). In terms of over-
stuffing its screenplay with annoying human characters, needless subplots, cliche-ridden dialogue and an insistence on making everything BIG, this has a lot in common with the 1998 Matthew Broderick take on Godzilla. I don’t mean that as a compliment. Imagine Starship Troopers without the clever satire and simpler, more palpable thrills. Obvious inspirations like the TOHO classic monster movies and Robot Jox (everyone remembers that one, right?) have a charm, gusto and offbeat appeal that’s unmistakable. So did Godzilla 1985, a movie my dad took me to see in my youth that left me enthralled, even though it was completely ridiculous. The key to all of those campy delights is that they didn’t take themselves as seriously and never confused generating excitement with massive overkill. Put simply, this movie and I were not drift compatible. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Forcefields can’t protect you. Despite your frequent wish that you could erect an impenetrable, invisible barrier between you and all harm, it can’t happen. Besides, that’s not the point. You already know that life isn’t about avoiding vulnerability and pain—in fact, you’re only truly living when you’re open to those possibilities. Imperviousness is isolating. Don’t settle for safe loneliness, please. There is no real safety in the world, anyway—entertaining illusions otherwise is simply foolhardy. The closest thing to real protection is people you love who love you back. How could you possibly find that wonderful crowd through a forcefield? LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Medieval tales, both historical and mythical, are rife with evil advisors holding sway over weak kings. Similarly, there are many examples of soldiers performing acts of horrible darkness with the excuse of “just following orders.” Bullshit. Kings, soldiers, and regular Joes are responsible for their acts, even those they appear to be ordered, blackmailed, or otherwise forced into. There’s always another choice, even if it’s not an easy one. I know you agree with me, so don’t for a second actually consider doing anything contrary to your moral code, no matter how it’s demanded of you. Make the choice that I know you’re capable of: the right one. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Every rock you throw this week will cast down two birds, whether you like it or not. You’re just that effective. Unfortunately, you’re not usually counting on your doubled efficiency—in other words you may be surprised by what you hit that you didn’t exactly intend to. In order to cut down on accidents, happy or otherwise, acknowledge and plan for your exponential efficacy. You don’t want to get too much more than you’re actually asking for. Know exactly what you’re aiming at. Decide precisely which two birds your one stone will kill, or don’t throw it at all. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) One pitfall Librans often fall into, to your own detriment, is assuming that others are as astute as you are. Since it’s easy for you to perceive what’s lacking in any given situation, you figure your own needs are just that obvious to others. Unfortunately, most people are hopelessly obtuse—they can barely figure out their own tangled inner urges; others’ desires are even more mysterious. This week, have patience when your friends and lovers are too clueless to guess at what you crave. Yes, it’s sweet when you’re surprised with exactly what you want, but isn’t spelling it out in no uncertain detail— and getting it—better than going without? SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’re an alchemist, a synchronistic bollixer, a genius mixer of disparate elements. Whether you’re taking pornographic pictures with which to construct a morality tale (drawn from your own set of enlightened ethics of course, not some tired yarn from an outdated ideology), crafting deliciously obscene latch-hook rugs, or cooking meals made of equal parts emotion and actual ingredients, you’re exercising one of your greatest talents. Your other gifts (profound compassion, generosity, and sensuality, among many) make you a good person—this one makes you a good artist. Since the world has need of your particular artistic vision, please use it as often as possible, this week and every week. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Screw gimmicks. You of all people should deplore such cheap, lame hooks. You’ve always wanted things as real as can be, and the illusions you do indulge are for specific, conscious purposes, like enhancing your sex life. Since attention-grabbing tricks might have more seductive power than usual this week, I urge you to resist being taken in by or using them. Make sure something is more than momentarily captivating before you succumb to it, that it has some solid substance behind it. And above all, don’t resort to anything so cheap yourself. You’re about as truly intriguing as they get. You don’t need a gimmick of any kind; don’t use one. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You’re a live wire charged with sexual energy. It’s
crackling from your genitals and erogenous zones in blue electrical arcs, zapping everyone you touch, one way or another. Whether you’re channeling this profusion of procreative power into prurience or passionately platonic activities, it’s bound to rock foundations. And when things get shaken up, unsought rewards can sometimes tumble into your lap, like ripe fruit from the bough. You almost never consider ulterior motives in matters of lust, and shouldn’t now; still, when beneficial fallout results, catch it. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’re a whirligig, a dervish, a dynamo. You’re eminently capable—you do virtually everything quickly and well. But there is one thing you’re abysmal at: manifesting patience. Once you’ve made up your mind, you require action. To sit quietly and wait for something is simply not in your nature; it makes you crazy. You’re at your coolest and most collected when you’re the eye of a tornado, surrounded by a frenzy of activity. However, since getting what you’ve just decided you want can’t be rushed, read a page from the Zen book, have a nervous breakdown, or take a pill: whatever it takes—just chill out. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Self-contradiction isn’t automatically a bad thing. People who are able to embody antitheses are usually fascinating. But it can also be profoundly counterproductive: lately, you’ve canceled yourself out. Your actions have been at cross-purposes. You’re both cure and disease. It’s time to quell your astrological dissonance, and stop needlessly splitting yourself in too many directions. Consider the myriad paths for not only their destinations but the journeys they represent. Then pick one and stick to it, so you can actually get somewhere. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) 800 million heartbeats. That’s how many most animals get before that unflagging muscle finally wears out. This can be loosely translated into lifespans: For example, an elephant, whose heart beats about 25 times a minute, lives many years longer than a hummingbird, whose pulse is much, much faster than that. However, as you know, quantity ain’t quality. How many of those heartbeats were wasted, unnoticed and unappreciated? Since this week you’re likely to learn or recall exactly how rich your life can be, I hope you can remember not to settle for anything less than that for at least ten million heartbeats. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) The astrological waste management team has gone on strike, apparently. You’ve been putting your trash out to the curb, but it’s just not getting picked up. That means all the mental garbage you thought you were rid of forever is just sitting outside your front door. The problem: there is no junkyard for garbage like this—at least, there’s no way to ever truly be rid of it. That’s not to say that you need to carry sacks of fly-ridden pestilential baggage around with you everywhere you go, but nor can you just dump it somewhere and forget about it. Consider: There’s abundant wealth in transforming weaknesses into strengths. Don’t think landfill; think recycling plant. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Grow gills. They might help you breathe water, a skill you’ll find useful when you’re thrown out of your element into one you’ve rarely, if ever, experienced before. It’s essential that you feel comfortable there, like a frequent tourist. Although you won’t be required to ever live in that new place, you might discover it’s in your best interest to travel there, often. What is this unfamiliar landscape, and why do you need to visit it? It’s the universe’s answer to your most recent heartfelt wishes. Since what you want lies outside your realm of routine experience, you need to explore new frontiers in order to find it. You may discover that your desires aren’t powerful enough to merit this much trouble; or you may realize that your just desserts will be that much sweeter for the work you put into acquiring them.
