ike many of our readers, we grew up with video games. Not the ultrasophisticated games today like Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto or Skyrim, in which players connected on the web immerse themselves in complex and elaborately drawn worlds, but simple, crude games in which you move your block of pixels around the screen, taking care not to touch other blocks of pixels, or perhaps going out of your way to smash into other blocks of pixels. These simple games were given equally simple names like
Breakout, Pitfall, Asteroids and Frogger. The passage of so many years means it’s hard to recall how many hours of our childhood were dedicated to smashing the rainbow walls of Breakout or trying to get that damned Frogger across the river, but it’s got to be in the “excessive” range. In any case, such memories represent some of the best times of our youths. Which is why we chose the style of retro video games to illustrate this year’s Best of Maui issue. As we do every year, we’ve asked our readers for their choices on dozens of topics,
CONTRIBUTORS
ranging from who makes the best pizza to who runs the best hardware store. It’s a fun issue, but it’s full of serious information–much like the video games of our youth, which were a joy to play and provided a lot of valuable hand-eye coordination (or so we told our parents). In any case, have fun with the issue. And remember–the choices in the following pages come from our readers, so feel free to blame yourself for disagreeing with the winners. Then again, that’s what makes Best of Maui so much fun.

Wondering about the next surf contest? They know them all. Best Bookstore Barnes & Noble On an island with just a single store dedicated to selling new books, I can see why readers chose Barnes & Noble. They’re a big chain, with rows of shelves full of books (including my three books, which makes me admittedly biased on this one). They carry a considerable number of Hawaiiana as well, and tons of magazines. They also sell music, movies, games and, of course, coffee. As for runner-up Maui Friends of the Library, they’re a nonprofit, run by volunteers, and now have locations in Kahului, Lahaina and Pu‘unene. For those wanting used books, MFOL is your best bet. BEST OF MAUI Best Hotel & Accommodations Grand Wailea The stunning 40 acres of oceanfront luxury that makes up the Grand Wailea has won big with MauiTime’s readers. The resort’s 780 gorgeous rooms are well appointed with everything you need for your getaway playcation. Of course, you don’t have to let your busy vacation schedule get the best of you–you could just as easily spend the hours floating down the lazy river with a pineapple cocktail in your hands, or in the treatments at Spa Grande, or by fishing for your own lobster dinner at Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a. 3850 Wailea Alanui Dr.; 808-875-1234; Grandwailea.com. @jenrusso

Elise’s wide variety of unique, recycled apparel from many well-known brands promises something for every shopper and has earned them a loyal following. 310 Alamaha St. Unit 3, Kahului; 808-893-5473 / 9595 E. Best Preschool [TIE] The Children’s Garden & Kama’aina Kids Both these preschools are so great with the keiki that our readers couldn’t choose between the two. The Children’s Garden employs a fun and experienced staff that leads their students through a creative curriculum that includes art, dance, computers and Hawaiiana classes. At Kama‘aina Kids’ three locations, the caring staff is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of their young students by creating a place where their minds are free to experience and explore. Best Scary Public Figure Keith Taguma Frankly, I’d be shocked if anyone else won this category. Maui Police Officer Keith Taguma is a Legend on Maui. You guys saw how that Taguma Watch Facebook Page got something like 5,000 likes in just a few days last week, right? Who knows how many thousands of parking tickets he’s written through the years–when I did an open search for his name on the Hawaii judiciary’s eCourt Kokua online database of traffic tickets, my computer crashed–but I do know that far too many of them bore the license plates of MauiTime staffers who struggled with Wailuku Town’s great dearth of public parking spaces. Sure, we call him scary and curse him when he writes parking tickets for cars parked five minutes past the two-hour mark, but deep down, most of us admire the guy. He is without question the hardest working cop in the Maui PD, and for that, MauiTime and its readers salute him. @apignataro
Runner-up: Monsanto
Best County Official Elle Cochran For yet another consecutive year, our readers have decided that Maui County Councilmember Elle Cochran is the county’s best public official. Though she’s only been in office since 2010, Cochran made a name for herself fighting to preserve Lipoa Point as part of the Save Honolua Coalition. With the state Legislature voting this year to buy the point from the Maui Land & Pineapple Company (which last summer had convinced a majority of Cochran’s colleagues to take the famed point out of preservation), that battle is now largely over. But look for Cochran to speak out on issues like GMO labeling and the development of South and West Maui. @apignataro
Runner-up: Alan Arakawa
Best Political Activist [TIE] Courtney Bruch & Irene Bowie Our readers were split on this category. Last year, Irene Bowie won, but this year she has to share the title with up-and-comer Courtney Bruch. Both are dedicated to bettering life for everyone on Maui, though both are focused on different issues and use different methods. Bowie, the president of the slow growth group Maui Tomorrow, sifts through planning documents and files lawsuits to make sure land developers don’t pave over too much of the island. Bruch prefers sit-ins and public rallies as she works with GMO Free Maui and Occupy Monsanto to make sure the food we grow, buy and consume is both safe to eat and produced in a just manner. @apignataro

Best B e s t Comunity C o mu n ity Non-Profit Non-Profit Maui Food Bank Our readers gave the nod to Maui Food Bank last year, and apparently saw no reason to change their minds this year. And why not? The place serves food to about 10,000 people every month–people on Maui who would otherwise go hungry. “A statewide network of suppliers allows the Maui Food Bank to turn each dollar donated into 6 lbs. of non-perishable groceries, as well as fresh produce, bread, meat, fish and poultry,” the organization states on its website. “This year the Maui Food Bank will distribute over 1.5 million pounds of food to the hungry.” Maui Food Bank is run by good people doing very good and necessary work, and it’s nice. 760 Kolu St., Wailuku; 808-243-9500; Mauifoodbank.org. @apignataro

Best Mayoral Candidate te Alan Arakawa It’s always fun to ask this question a couple years before the next election, both to gauge the popularity of the incumbent and to see just how many of you u even think about politics in off-years. And our nd o nd ur voters were pretty transparent on both acc accounts, a c ounts cc s, making clear that current Mayor Alan Arakawa ra k a wa ra is still pretty popular among the scant few ew of yyou ew ou ou who bothered to answer this question. Se Seriously S Seri r i ou ri ousl s llyy sl though, Arakawa won the votes pretty clearly, le a le arr ly ly,, and given both his record and the names s of his possible opponents, we don’t have e any problem with that. @apignataro

Best Gubernatorial Candidate Neil Abercrombie There are political leaders who seem born for their jobs. They exude confidence, inspire those around them and generally get stuff done. They are strong without being tyrannical and just without being nagging. Then there’s Neil Abercrombie. Don’t get me wrong–he’s a smart and nice guy–but the words “confidence” and “leadership” just aren’t associated with him. After all, charges from Democrats of his sending inexperienced staffers to the Capitol dogged him for nearly all of his first two years in office. I suppose Abercrombie mbie mb ie did did d fine ne ass a back-bencher b bac acck k--be benc benc nche che her er in in the the U.S. House of Representatives, but as governor off Ha Hawaii, comes more rnor rn or o H awa awa aii i , he e com mes o off ff m ff ore ass or the state’s chief academic than its executive. e @apignataro e. pg

Best Environmental Issue ssue Cane Burning Forgive the pun, but the controversy over e r Ha H Haawaiian Commercial & Sugar’s insistence e tthat hat ha the only way they can process sugar is b byy fi ffirst i rs irs r t burning the cane in the fields is really bl blowing up. llo owi w i ng u p. p. Given that tthe he h e company recently paid a $9,300 fine to tthe he e Hawaii Department of Health for “caus-ing or permitting visible fugitive dust to o become airborne without taking reasonable precautions,” it’s looking like those complaints are having at least some effect. @apignataro PHOTO BY SEAN MICHAEL HOWER

Best Town to L Live ive iin n Kihei Ahh, this little North Shore Kihei (and South Maui in general) gets a bad rap from people on Maui, but for our readers, there’s no better place on the island to live. Kihei is poorly planned, they say, or it’s too ugly. Others say it has too many bars and not enough visible coastline. All are true statements to a certain extent, but as my attorney friend Ben Lowenthal wrote in one of his recent State of Aloha columns in The Maui News, Kihei exemplifies Maui’s working class today the way places like Pu‘unene did nearly a century ago. “Plantation camps were full of people from other places getting together and working for a single employer,” he wrote on Feb. 8, 2013. “The story isn’t that much different for a lot of people who call Kihei home. Most people living in Kihei work at the major resorts in Wailea, run late shifts at high-end restaurants, and man the kiosks and counters for vacationing tourists.” @apignataro
Best Town to Visit Vis sit t Paia What is it with our readers and Paia? The North Shore town itself is cramped, with considerable parking and traffic issues. Sure, it’s quaint and walkable and features lots of boutiques, cafes and a few miles of gorgeous shoreline, but beyond that there’s just not a lot for visitors to do. What’s more, the county’s Fourth Friday Town Parties there proved to be a bust–for a variety of reasons dealing with crime and a serious lack of resources on the part of town merchants. Paia is a great place, but the experience of living in such a small, mellow town full of people from around the world is wholly different from merely driving through on a Saturday afternoon. @apignataro

Best B est State State Blunder Blunder Monsanto We’re assuming that our readers defined blunder as allowing Monsanto to come to Hawaii, buy up huge tracts of land and start growing genetically modified crops. Well, given our nation’s market economy, the great State of Hawaii didn’t have much choice in any of that. And, in fact, there are signs that state officials have collectively raised their brows ever so slightly at the ag business giant. Just a week ago in fact, the state Department of Health announced that it had levied a $3,400 fine against Monsanto for allowing fugitive dust to become airborne at its Molokai operation, allegedly without taking reasonable precautions (Monsanto has requested a hearing on that charge). Of course, that fine represents just 0.0008 percent of the company’s $4.2 billion revenue during just the fiscal third quarter of 2013, but still, it’s a start. @apignataro
Best County Blunder Maui County Department of Liquor Control Even before former Liquor Control Investigator Justin Dobbs filed his lawsuit against the County of Maui in October 2012, alleging all manner of bad deeds going down at the LC (which is still pending), most people who’d spent more than a day on Maui knew that something just wasn’t right with the county agency that enforces liquor laws. Put simply, the same agency that issues liquor licenses and collects fees for that service also fines license-holders for transgressions–all the revenue of which is kept separate from the county’s general fund. And now that Maui County Councilmember Mike White has proposed a first-ever county prohibition against nepotism, you can expect further shocks at the LC, which for many years has been run as a kind of Silva Family operation, with Father Frank at the helm and Sons Gene and Layne doing admin and investigative work. @apignataro

Named Ho‘okipa, Shark Pit and La Perouse, these burritos are huge meals in themselves. Maui Tacos has been making winning burritos all over the island for years, but at the Kihei Kalama Village and Napili locations you can now order them with a beer. Located island-wide. Gannon’s
Milagro’s
Stella Blues
High on the hill abutting Wailea’s Gold Course, Gannon’s takes the votes for the Best Dining with a View on Maui. The fabulous vista from the top of Wailea Golf Club Drive overlooks Kaho‘olawe, Molokini and the West Maui Mountains. It’s almost as breathtaking as being in a helicopter, though it tastes much much better. From beneath their cathedral ceilings or out on the outside deck, you can take in the awardwinning Chef Bev Gannon’s cuisine from 8:30am to 9pm. 100 Wailea Golf Club Dr.; 808875-8080. @jenrusso
At Maui’s best happy hour, you can sit out on the outdoor patio and watch the passersby on Baldwin Avenue and Hana Highway. It’s one of the most delightful spots on the island to sip a refreshing beverage, so much so that it’s the only live entertainment Milagro’s needs. Their Happy Hour lasts a good deal longer than most places, too–from 1pm to 5pm you can get $3 house-made margaritas and $3 Kona brew drafts. Of course, all that people-watching will give you an appetite so you might as well opt for an order of ahi taquitos, or you could always try something new from the menu they launched this month. 3 Baldwin Ave., Paia; 808-579-8755; Milagrosfoodcompany.com. @jenrusso

Runner-up: Three’s Bar & Grill
Paula Fuga and Mike Love, Anuhea, Hapa and John Cruz all perform on the Stella Blues Supper Club stage, as well as special acts you won’t catch anywhere else. Seatings start at 6pm where you can take in a leisurely three-course dinner before the entertainment begins. Even if you don’t have time to eat, going in for the late sitting with cocktails and pupus is a pleasure, too. There’s something to be said for kicking back at a table with food and drinks while watching a show, and our readers agree. 1279 S. Kihei Rd.; 808874-3779; Stellablues.com @jenrusso

Best Chef Sheldon Simeon
Best Local Brewer Maui Brewing Company We’re lucky to have our very own brewed beer. You can get cans of Big Swell IPA, Bikini Blonde, Coconut Porter, and limited release bres at the supermarket, or on tap at your local watering hole. Even better, you can tour the brewery in Lahaina and see how it’s made, or head to Kahana where their brew pub serves even more beer on tap. What’s more, owners Garrett and Melanie Marerro will be building a new brewery and brewpub on the Southside to keep up with demand, so we can expect even more island-inspired suds coming soon. 4405 Honoapiilani Hwy., Kahana; 808-669-3474; Mauibrewingco.com. @jenrusso PHOTO BY SEAN MICHAEL HOWER
Chef Sheldon Simeon sharpened his skills as executive chef at Star Noodle and Leoda’s, and I’ll be forever grateful for his Vietnamese crepe and handheld corn pie. But he achieved fame nationwide with his stint on Bravo’s Top Chef Seattle competition, taking Season 10 by storm. Maui swelled with pride as Simeon showed how his creativity has been inspired by our local culture. Like many, we were devastated as he got kicked off the show just shy of the finale. Although Simeon has since moved on from Star Noodle and Leoda’s, and hasn’t resurfaced in a kitchen as of yet, he assures us that he’s working on some top secret projects. @jenrusso

Their huge portions, fresh produce and extensive menu options served at reasonable prices sets this spot ahead of your average breakfast nook. Ko Our readers know a good deal when they see one, and Ko–Tylun Pang’s restaurant at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea–has one hell of a deal. Known for its “Plantation-Inspired Cuisine,” which includes Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean and Japanese dishes. What’s more, those holding valid Hawaii IDs who sit at the bar get half off their food and 25 percent off their alcohol. Considering that this is some of the most delicious and exciting food on Maui, locals would be crazy not to take advantage of it. Best Local Sandwich 808 Deli MauiTime readers have spoken (or eaten) on the issue of who makes the best sandwich and, for the sixth year in a row, decided that 808 Deli takes the title of Best Local Sandwich. You can also pair your sandwich with a salad or gourmet hot dog. Whether it’s the made-to-order service or the work they do for the community, one thing is clear: 808 Deli is Maui’s sandwich joint of choice. 2511 S. Best Bar South Shore Tiki Lounge Owner Mikhail Tassi once described his Tiki Lounge to me as the beating heart of the Kihei Kalama Village, and our readers would seem to agree. You can get just about anything from behind this well-stocked bar, but their specialties are true Tiki drinks like the Zombie and Pin Up Potion. Put that next to their calamari, Thai Phoon pizza or pork riblets and you might think the fun stops there. You’d be wrong, of course, because the South Shore Tiki Lounge hosts daily live entertainment starting at 4pm, late night dancing and other special events. 1913 S. Best Male Bartender [TIE] Dave Bauss & William Sythes Our readers couldn’t decide what male they preferred behind the bar, so here are them both. Bauss has been at Milagro’s in Paia for years, but somehow found the secret to keep from aging (I’m betting tequila has something to do with it). As for Sythes, he spends a few nights a week at Ambrosia in the Kihei Triangle, helping to get booties shaking on the dance floor. Both barkeeps know their way around mixed drinks, chilled glasses, shots and draft beers, so stop by for drink and see what all the fuss is about. Sly Mongoose The World Famous Sly Mongoose has long dominated the dive bar category. No matter what time you drop by, the bar features both a climate and daylight controlled environment–just how I like to put on my buzz. More importantly, a cold can of beer slides your way quicker than you can say “Budweiser.” This place doesn’t put on airs, knowing that its clientele comes to the watering hole to get refreshed, not pampered. Fancy mixed cocktails, hipster facial hair, and trendy ambiance aren’t necessary at the Goose, but good tipping is. 1036 Limahana Pl., Lahaina; 808-661-8097. @jenrusso

Best Hostess Bar Mickey’s MauiTime readers did the recon, and they say the best hostess bar hangout is Mickey’s in Kahului. Not sure what a hostess bar is? According to its license, a hostess bar is a special type of drinking establishment in which the employees can sit down and drink with the patrons. It’s like having the hook-up guaranteed, though to be clear you’re the one buying the drinks. Sounds like good clean fun, though we’re still not sure what to make of the $200 bottles of “non-alcoholic champagne” we’ve seen associated with other hostess bars... 350 Hoohana St., Kahului; 808-871-2182. @jenrusso

While DK Kodama’s successful Sansei restaurant is more than just sushi–he loaded the menu with gobs of wonderful Japanese cuisine, all bearing his special touches–it’s the sushi that has our readers excited. Sansei’s substantial list of rolls, nigiri and sashimi have been groundbreaking, and despite lots of efforts to make inventive sushi around the island, it’s Sansei’s maki that gets craved most. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that their sushi goes half price on certain days in their late night happy hour, and their early bird specials fill the restaurant before it’s even open. 600 Office Rd., Kapalua; 808-6696286 / 1881 S. Best Italian Food Casanova This bastion of late night lifestyle in Makawao is also our readers’ choice for the best place on the island to get best Italian food. Or you can indulge in one of their pizzas, which are made in the Napoli style. Consider this a little slice of Japan. Here, Eunice Kitagawa creates traditional Japanese cuisine with great local ingredients. Was it the summer rolls, the comedian waiters, their award-winning fried shrimp, or the Vietnamese burritos that our readers preferred? Probably all of the above. No matter what Vietnamese dish you order here or who you order it from, it’s the best on Maui. The menu is full of noodle dishes, hot pots, curries, seafood and veggies. Sam’s location is one of the old spots in Wailuku, and it opens early at 6am but is closed by 2pm. You can expect it to be busy at lunch– you’ll have to wait for a seat in the small cafe, but it’s worth it. Best Health Food Store SERVING MAUI FOR 30 YEARS
Best B est Local Local C Coffee offe ee House H ou s e Maui Coffee Roasters Kahului’s oldest mom and pop coffee shop FTW! Their win shows sometime those who’ve been doing it the longest also do it the best. The Hana Highway coffee shop got the votes this year for their delicious coffee, cool staff and great food. If you’re in a hurry, you can even serve yourself a cup and drop your dollars in the puka. The cafe opened in 1981 and has been making wicked coffee ever since. From 2pm till close you can get a cheap jolt with their happy cappy hour, when cappuccinos are just $2. 444 Hana Hwy., Kahului; 808-877-2877. Mauicoffeeroasters.com. @jenrusso
Runner-up: Wailuku Coffee Co.
Best Pancakes Tasty Crust I’m always tempted to get two orders of Tasty Crust’s incredible hotcakes, but even I know that’s way more than I can chew. If you like really good pancakes, their short stack is more than enough. Then again, who am I to restrict your fluffy, butter-infused pancake intake? Year after year, our readers have been loud and clear about their fave pancake place. And I would have to agree: there’s nothing like a homemade pancake that is as big as the plate it’s served on and costs less than a large glass of orange juice. 1770 Mill St.; 808-244-0845; Tastycrust.com @sandtothecity

Best Shave Ice Ululani’s If you think shave ice is just a drizzling of syrup over a handful of frozen water, think again. In Hawaii, we take our shave ice seriously–so seriously that many here believe that “all shave ice is not created equal.” The perfect cool-down for a warm tropical day, shave ice at Ululani’s is like snow drenched in fruity, delicious sweetness. After returning to Maui from life on the Mainland, I made Ululani’s my first stop. I’ve never received a better welcome. Locations island-wide; Ululanisshaveice.com @sandtothecity

Best Smoothie Jamba Juice After a workout, I usually treat myself with a trip to Maui’s Best Smoothie Joint, Jamba Juice. After downing a wheatgrass shot, I wash it down with an original size guava-gogo (make it light). Sometimes I grab a bag of pirate booty for the road. I would not necessarily call it a healthy combo, but it sure does the trick. Voted the best place to get a smoothie year after year, Jamba has claimed the title yet again with its vibrant store design, friendly faces and flavorful smoothies. Best New Restaurant
Lahaina Grill MauiTime’s readers decided that of all the restaurants on Maui, Lahaina Grill is the best dinner. Since 1990, the establishment has won awards and accolades from publications in Hawaii and the Mainland for providing some of the finest dining anywhere. From their carpaccio of filet mignon to their Wagyu beef raviolis on the appetizer menu to entrees including Kona coffee roasted mountain meadows rack of lamb, Marcho Farms center cut all natural veal chop and Wild Pacific salmon filet, this is as good as it gets. 127 Lahainaluna Rd.; 808-667-5117; Lahainagrill.com. @jenrusso
Runner-up: Mama’s Fish House
Best Seafood Mama’s Fish House In this category, it’s kind of hard for other places to compete against Mama’s Fish House, where the catch is so fresh that the name of the boat on which it was caught is listed on the menu. Dealing direct with the talented local fisherman means that Mama’s gets the best of the day’s catch. The crab-stuffed mahi is their signature dish, but don’t let that sway you from tasting some of their more unique fish dishes. The ahi rolls and kama are among the most unreal treats from sea to table you can eat. 799 Poho Pl., Kuau; 808-579-8488; Mamasfishhouse.com. @jenrusso
Nuka It didn’t take long for Nuka to catch the attention of MauiTime’s eaters. The new Haiku sushi restaurant has a certain way with food, which our voters found was something to celebrate. The Haiku restaurant, which opened early this year, has an inviting dining room that overlooks an open kitchen where patrons can watch Chef Hiro’s sushi artistry with house-milled rice, vegetables and fresh fish. Nuka pays homage to Japanese cooking but brings it to a level well worth driving to Haiku. 780 Haiku Rd.; 808-575-2939; Nukamaui.com. @jenrusso

Best Server Renee Tyler Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Renee has served food and beverages at the South Shore Tiki Lounge in the Kihei Triangle for the last year. As our readers know, she’s friendly, smiles a good deal of the time she’s on duty and generally does her best to get her customers’ orders both correct and delivered in a timely manner. And given the crowds that the Tiki Lounge can rack up on weekend nights, that’s no small feat. South Shore Tiki Lounge, 1913 S. Kihei Rd.; 808874-6444; Southshoretikilounge.com @apignataro

Best Lunch Cafe O’Lei Whether you’re in Kihei, Kahului or Upcountry, youre sure to find a bustling crowd at Cafe O’Lei. Voted Best Lunch spot for the second time in a row by our readers, Cafe O’Lei has hard to beat lunch specials that will give your tastebuds a bang for your buck. They offer plate lunches, salads, burgers and many things in between. What’s more, their convenient locations, quick service and reasonable prices make for a pleasant stop mid-work day. Islandwide. Best Local Pizza Fabiani’s This year, our readers decided that Maui’s very best pizza comes from Fabiani’s in Kihei. It only took a year for this family-owned restaurant to move up from their getting named as last year’s best new restaurant to this year’s best pizza. Their thin crust Italian American artisan pizza starts with handmade dough from their bakery. Next, it’s topped with whatever you want. Sounds good, and at happy hour it’s half off, too. 95 E. Foodland
Our readers’ favorite spot to order pupus has been located in the Mana Kai Hotel, overlooking the bay at Keawekapu Beach, since 1995. The Chinese rib pupu at Five Palms is amazing, and the scallops, soups, salads and sushi pack the menu with variety. A phenomenal happy hour awaits if you’re hungry 3-7pm or 9-11pm, when all pupus and sushi go half-price. 2960 S. Kihei Rd.; 808-879-2607; 5palmsrestaurant.com. @jenrusso
We often see the words “local delicacy” next to Spam Musubi, and there’s truth in that. You take one scoop rice and one slab of Spam, add a little teriyaki sauce and you’ve got the Best of Maui Spam Musubi. Foodland keeps this hot number under the warming lights in the morning. The balance of a carbohydrate foundation with salty Spam is just one of the many joys of local culinary delights. Foodland.com. @jenrusso

Best Fish Sandwich
Mulligan’s on the Blue In the world of frying flaky fish in beer batter until it’s hot and crispy, MauiTime’ s readers choose Mulligan’s over everyone else. Can you blame them? Backed up by their big wedge potatoes and homemade tartar sauce, it’s a taste of Ireland that wins every time. Of course, they’re on the lunch and dinner menu, but you can also get their mini version on the happy hour menu 3-6pm and from 10pm to midnight. 100 Kaukahi St., Wailea; 808-874-1131; Mulligansontheblue.com. @jenrusso
Runner-up: Eskimo Candy
Best Mexican Food Amigo’s Good Mexican food may seem hard to come on an island that’s 3,500 miles away from the Mainland, but that hasn’t been the case since Amigo’s rode into town. Their daily specials on burritos, tacos chimichanga and nachos are always a good way to go, but pretty much everything on the menu is tasty. Perhaps the best thing about the place is that you can eat at Amigos in Kihei, Lahaina or Kahului. Amigosmaui.com. @jenrusso
Paia Fish Market When you’re in need of a fish sandwich, our readers know that only Paia Fish Market will do. So what the Market insists on calling it a “fish burger”–this is their signature item, and they do it better than anyone. You can have blackened seared ahi, salmon, mahi or ono, and it comes garnished with their own recipe coleslaw made fresh daily. These generous sandwiches are incomparable, and they’re a big part of why the Paia Fish Market is crowded every day. 100 Baldwin Ave., Paia; 808-579-8030; Paiafishmarket.com. @jenrusso

Best Fine Dining
Best Steak
Merriman’s
Ordering prime cuts of beef in a traditional steakhouse has an allure all its own. Ruth’s Chris Steak House may be a big chain, but they know how to cook a steak. Grilled to your taste, with a tab of butter and the fixings. My latest infatuation is the ribeye, marbeled and juicy but the Porterhouse will do in a pinch. Fans of good filets know that Ruth’s Chris has USDA prime. 3750 Wailea Alanui Dr.; 808-874-8880 / 900 Front St., Lahaina; 808-6618815; Ruthschris.com. @jenrusso
Chef Peter Merriman’s passion as a forefather of Hawaiian regional cuisine comes through in his Kapalua restaurant, which got big votes for fine dining. The restaurant offers superb service, a modern dining room overlooking Kapalua Bay and the freshest local ingredients. Merriman’s honestly takes an interest in your experience, taking fine dining to a new level. As our readers know very well, Merriman’s would be the epitome of fine cuisine anywhere in the world. 1 Bay Club Pl., Kapalua; 808-669-6400; Merrimanshawaii.com. @jenrusso

Best Fish Tacos Coconut’s Fish Cafe Two corn tortillas stuffed with fresh catch sounds simple enough to prepare, but you’d be surprised how difficult it can be to pull off properly. On who does that best, our readers were clear that the answer is Coconut’s Fish Cafe. They top the fish off with plenty of their special recipe France’s Coleslaw with coconut milk and a generous portion of mango salsa. In fact, they’ve gotten so popular that the owners have opened a Coconut’s Fish Cafe in Arizona. 1279 S. Kihei Rd.; 808-875-9979; Coconutfishcafe.com. @jenrusso

Aloha Mixed Plate
You can find the Best Barista at the Starbucks in Kihei. There she makes all our caffeine dreams come true. Ironically, Fasha doesn’t abuse coffee like those who voted for her, but she also doesn’t resent those who can’t go a day without their cup of joe. Opening can be brutally early for her, but Puckett takes it in stride, and says the people she works with at Starbucks make it the best job ever. @jenrusso
Since our readers apparently enjoy their local eats with a great ocean view, they decided that Aloha Mixed Plate’s outdoor lanai, sunsets and happy hour are where they want to go. The mixed plate cuisine has a rich history from the plantation days and their menu gives tribute to Maui’s melting pot of today. You’ll find great kalua pig, chow fun, kalbi ribs and teriyaki beef, all served up with two scoops rice and one scoop mac salad. Best Local Amat Amate Amateur Surfer Matt Meola Ma Carving, spinning, jumping; Matt Meola creates the most impressive aerials with ease and fluidity. This 24-year-old Haiku native has been surfing his whole life, frequenting Ho‘okipa during the winter, then travelling to surf destinations around the world in the summer. His water acrobatics have caught the attention of sponsors like Rockstar, Kaenon and Oxbow. In 2011, Meola shot to surfing stardom by winning Taylor Steele’s online video contest, Innersection. Meola continued his videography projects by using the excitement of his surfing antics to produce, along with fellow surfer Albee Layer, The Isle, a web series sponsored by Rockstar. @beccanaka
Runner-up: Shane Hurdman
Best Local Grom Kelson Lau He may only be 12 years old and stand less than five feet tall, but there’s nothing small about Kelson Lau’s surfing. Fearlessly going for it on some major waves, Kelson carves like an old pro, even placing in some local surf competitions. Hailing from Peahi, this saimin-loving grom is just as dedicated to his grades at Kalama Intermediate as he is to the waves. Already sponsored by Hurley, Dakine and Lau Lau Shapes, his surfing is making a bigger splash than the waves at Jaws during a north swell–and you’ll probably find him tearing it up out there pretty soon. @beccanaka

Best Public Pool Lahaina Aquatic Center Perhaps because this place is still relatively new at just eight years old (and because the pool at the Westin Resort in Ka‘anapali isn’t exactly “public”), it’s proven popular with our readers. According to the county Parks Department, the Lahaina Aquatic Center includes “competition and warm-up/ children’s pools, scoreboard, PA- and timing-systems, meeting, conference and locker rooms.” Not really sure our readers are loving the LAC because of its meeting rooms, but it’s nice to know they’re there should a water polo match get out of control and require immediate mediation. @apignataro PHOTO BY SEAN MICHAEL HOWER

Best Scholastic Athlete Renny Richmond In his senior year at Seabury Hall, swimmer Renny Richmond became a six-time state champion, tying the record for the number of state championships won by a Maui swimmer. Richmond closed out his impressive high school career by earning more titles than any other male athlete in Maui Interscholastic League history. In 2012, Richmond also participated in the U.S. Olympic trials in his signature 100-meter butterfly race. Looking forward to continuing his aquatic ventures, Richmond has committed to attend the University of Arizona on scholarship in the fall. @beccanaka
Beginning in 2004, Melissa Rajesh introduced Maui’s keiki to the fun and challenging world of gymnastics through Maui Tumblers. Acting as a mobile gymnastics company, Rajesh and the rest of the Maui Tumblers certified coaches bring gymnastic programs directly to schools, camps and even birthday parties. Rajesh leads her students in active learning through stretching exercises and obstacle courses and by introducing them to new skills and activities. Black Rock
Even for Maui, this is an impressive hike. Known as the Pipiwai Trail, it starts near Oheo gulch in Hana and runs about four miles round-trip through gorgeous, sublime bamboo trees before ending at the impressive Waimoku Waterfalls. Along the way there are bridges, boardwalks, Banyan trees, waterfalls, streams and all the tropical rain forest beauty people have come to expect from Maui. As is pretty much the case with any hikes in Hana, proper hiking footwear is a must as heavy rains (and flash floods) can start at any time. You should have at least some hiking experience, as the trail gains about 900 feet in altitude from the coast to the falls. @apignataro
Yes, Black Rock in West Maui is one of the most popular snorkeling spots on Maui. Anyone who goes into the water there after 8am can see that. But popularity doesn’t always equal best, and when there are that many people splashing around in the water hoping to spot turtles, it’s inevitable that nearby sea life will get spooked. In truth, there are all sorts of wonderful snorkeling spots around the island, including Ukumehame, Honolua Bay, Makena and Palauea, which is also known as White Rock. Those spots offer the same clear water and coral reefs as Black Rock, but without the big crowds. @apignataro

Best Children’s Activity Maui Ocean Center Here, keiki can explore fascinating sea life without you worrying over rough currents or getting sand in your eyes. Voted the island’s Best Children’s Activity, the Maui Ocean Center offers a slew of exhibits including “The Living Reef,” “Hammerhead Harbor” and a 54-foot long acrylic tunnel offering uninterrupted views of “The Open Ocean.” The center also has special events crafted with children in mind–birthday parties, sleepovers and field trips are just a few. 192 Ma‘alaea Rd.; 808-270-7000; Mauioceancenter.com @sandtothecity
Rooted in its mission of keeping whales, dolphins and the ocean itself safe from pollution, hunting and extinction, Pacific Whale Foundation is this year’s winner as the Best Activity Company. Advocacy, conservation and fun are all important parts to PWF’s method. Not only do guests have fun, but the proceeds go towards continued marine research and conservation efforts. Best Yoga Studio o Maui Yoga & Kickboxing MauiTime readers apparently enjoy their yoga hot and intense, se, so they decided that the Maui Yoga and Kickboxing studio is the bestt place on the island to practice your adho mukha savasana. What makes their studio so unique? Besides climate controls that jack up the temperature rature to 100 degrees with 40 percent humidity, the studio combines yoga a and kickboxing for a complete mind and body workout. Of course, not all of their yoga is balmy–you’ll find traditional ashtanga and yoga strength training. aining. 202 E Lipoa St., Kihei; 808 875-9642; Mauihotyoga.com. @jenrusso o

Best Yoga Teacher James Onnikian When it comes to the best yoga teacher, MauiTime voters think James Onnikian is number one. Surprisingly, running a yoga studio on Maui wasn’t his first passion. In fact, he’s a world champion kickboxer, well studied in the methods of martial arts. He feels that yoga and kickboxing offer the best all-over body workout. That makes him even more qualified to kick your butt into shape, which is probably why our readers voted him best. Try Onnikian’s yoga practice at his studio Maui Yoga and Kickboxing in Kihei. Best Locals Beach Big Beach PHOTO BY SEAN MICHAEL HOWER
Yeah, I can see why our readers opted for Big Beach as the preferred spot for Maui’s local residents. Maybe it’s the fact that, unlike Ka‘anapali, Big Beach is huge and completely undeveloped. Or perhaps it’s because of the let’s call them “challenging” surf conditions, in which massive waves explode on shore. There are few more awe-inspiring sights than watching people born and raised on Maui grab their body boards and run into the waves on high-surf conditions the instant the lifeguard gets off the Public Address system after warning everyone about the “life-changing injuries” that can result from getting worked in that surf. @apignataro
Runner-up: Baby Beach
Best Swimming Beach Ka‘anapali Beach Aww, who wants to swim here? All Ka‘anapali has are miles of white sand and crystal clear water. Some spots are better for surfing, and Black Rock is a super-popular snorkeling spot, but for much of Ka‘anapali’s length you can just dive into the water and have a grand time in relative safety. Sure, there are thousands of visitors slowing turning scarlet on the sand and thousands of hotel and condo rooms just a few yards away, but that’s the price we must all pay for one of the island’s best beaches. @apignataro

Giggle Hill Apparently our readers haven’t actually visited the Kalakupua Playground at 4th Marine Division Park in Haiku (known locally as Giggle Hill) lately, because the playground has been closed for some time. Oh, don’t get us wrong: there’s enough equipment and catwalks there to give any kid hours of enjoyment, but as of now, no one can use it because county officials closed it last October after deeming it unsafe. That means the County Parks Department will have to demolish it, then build a new playground that meets national safety standards. You never know who will show on the Wednesday night open mic night at Haui’s Life’s a Beach. Perhaps for that reason, MauiTime readers think it’s the best on the island. Horoscope
Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Many rich people don’t know how to spend their wealth. They end up squandering vast sums on ridiculous things that bring nobody pleasure, succor, or rich experience, not even themselves. Ironically, most poor people know exactly what they’d do with a cool million, if they could get their hands on it. Perhaps this concept is in the same league with the aphorism, “Youth is wasted on the young.” Do you feel lucky? You should. Unlike so many, you know precisely how to use exactly what you’ve got, whether it’s beauty, cash, or a fast car. This week, enjoy your wealth, without worrying about acquiring more; you’re already richer than almost everyone else. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Perversely, the nature of your skepticism runs thus: the more you want to believe something, the less likely you are to actually take it on faith. Because you’re aware that your own needs or desires might cloud your judgment, you resist indulging them. I admire this tendency—despite the fact that it probably makes your life much more complicated and difficult than if you could just be blindly loyal to some appealing, unproven concept. However, don’t take this attitude to an unhealthy extreme; everything you most want to believe is not automatically wrong. This week, consider the possibility that some of the things you desperately want to be true actually are, and give them all the benefit of the doubt. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Your realism has run amuck. You’ve let your firm grip on practical considerations become a stranglehold. It’s probably quite important to you, when conceiving and planning your dreams and goals, that you keep them within the realm of the achievable. But don’t underestimate your ability to set precedents by rule-breaking or, better yet—rule-remaking. Review all the tours de force you’ve planned for yourself over the past month. Then up the stakes. Take them at least one and as many as three steps further than you’d originally planned. Why aim low? Shoot for the highest visible target. Odds are, you’ll hit it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Oscar Wilde was right: “Give a man a mask and he’ll tell you the truth.” Sometimes it’s easier to get at those deep, difficult bursts of honest revelation when you’re partially occluded from them. Your trouble is that you’ve been trying to tackle your hardest lessons head-on. When things get too painfully intense, people shut down; their emotions flatline. Don’t put yourself, or anyone else, in that position. Instead, write stories, act shit out, or talk it through using sock puppets, as ridiculous as those things sound. Being silly isn’t so bad: If you can manage to laugh at any time while dealing with the hard stuff, you’re doing well. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Free-thinking you may be. Rebellious genius you often are. But wholesale antagonistic prick you’re not, usually. Don’t be an asshole and persist out of principle. You justly resent intrusion into what you consider sacrosanct headspace. Unfortunately, this week you’re especially liable to interpret well-meant advice, cautionary tales, or even offers of aid as undesired meddling. Yes, only you have the right to police your own mind. But every sheriff needs deputies. Let your trusted fellows have some say over what you’re up to and where you’re going these days. You’re likely to do it better and get there faster with their help, believe it or not. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) The authority figures in your life may know what’s up, at least this week. It’s probably painful to hear—especially from those you often resent—that one of your dreams isn’t feasible, at least in its current form. But this isn’t just tyrannical naysaying; for once you and your local despots should be on the same page—everyone wants to see this particular dream come to fruition. The problem: you’ve gotten so used to doing things (pardon the cliché) outside the box that it never occurred to you that this particular goal might be more easily and abundantly realized by playing by the rules, instead of bending them. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Packrat you’re not, exactly. But you do like to save
things, or perhaps more accurately, safeguard them. Somewhere in your garage, attic, basement, shed, or rented self-storage space, treasures abound. As without, so within: The way you organize your stuff reflects the way you deploy internal treasures. Lately, that’s meant that the more rare or valuable they are, the less they get used. It might not be time to whip out that antique furniture, those vintage plates, or all those mint-condition vinyl LPs. But it is time to venture into the walk-in freezer of your soul and start thawing the softest, most tender parts of your heart. You’ll need them soon. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) How many elephants will you need? Let me explain my question. Shortly after they opened the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883, a rumor about its imminent collapse triggered a panicked stampede that killed 12 people. Fears about its instability persisted until 1884, when P.T. Barnum paraded across the bridge with 21 elephants and 17 camels, to demonstrate its soundness. Fascinating folklore, and relevant, too: You know where you’re going. You even know how to get there. Yet you hesitate, while your friends and allies march whole herds of heavy animals across the bridge to your next chapter, just to prove to you it’s possible. Won’t you join them, already? PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Narcissism isn’t a usual Piscean vice. But your persistent attempts to understand yourself and how you’re perceived by the world could be interpreted as unbridled vanity. Even though I know it’s not egotism, I still recommend you temporarily quit your extended mirror-contemplations. Stay away from polished surfaces, lengthy, self-analytical journal entries, and teary, soul-searching monologues to your therapist or confidantes this week. It’s not that you should cease trying to fathom your own depths, only that you shouldn’t try so hard. This week, you’re most likely to see yourself most clearly when you’re not actually looking.
We Like You Too!
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Sports cars, motorcycles, ATVs, skates: whatever an Aries can use to “get there faster,” he will. Explain to any member of your tribe that the journey is usually way more important than the destination, and she’ll reply: “Yes, and I like my journey to be very fast and exciting.” This week that enviable attitude is your worst enemy. Slow down. Take every chance you get to pull off the road, take scenic photographs, pick flowers, and pee in the bushes. I shiver to think of all the intoxicating treasures, door-opening secrets, and subtle keys to new intensities of love that you’ll miss if you don’t. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) A Madagascan butterfly flapping its wings could catalyze weather patterns that result in a destructive North American hurricane. It’s unlikely, sure— but I want you to understand it’s possible, so you don’t underestimate your own ripple effect. This week, even your tiniest actions are likely to trigger eminently unpredictable compound reactions, to an epic scale. Everything you put out there—from dollars to offhand ideas to works of art—can (and probably will) go on to influence countless people in ways you can never know. Don’t be paralyzed by the unknowable consequences of your choices; be activated by them. This week’s actions will return to you eventually, essentially the same, but so magnified and transmuted you might not recognize them. In other words: Be good, and the universe will eventually be very, very good back. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Out of all the signs in the zodiac, I understand you the least, Gemini. I adore you; my many Gemini friends are universally engaging, sweet, and popular, amongst many other fine qualities. But you’re also as hard to quantify and pin down as swamp gas. Your unpredictability can be exciting and entertaining—but it’s also a little scary to those you’d like to be closest to. Don’t clue me or most people in; we enjoy the mystery of your occasional seeming randomness. But the level of trust and intimacy you crave can only be achieved by sharing the secret of your motivations. Are you ready for that deeper love? Go get it, now that you know how.
