Moore wins!
CARISSA MOORE WINS US OPEN BEFORE HUNTINGTON BEACH RIOTS On Sunday, July 28, Hawaii’s own Carissa Moore, 20, won the Vans US Open of Surfing, which was held in Huntington Beach, California. Her score was 16.00. According to a July 28 press release from the US Open, “the win vaults the Hawaiian to No. 1 on the ASP Women’s WCT over then leader Tyler Wright (AUS), 19.” But that’s only half the story. Immediately following the end of the competition, riots broke out in Huntington Beach. Yes, good old fashioned riots, complete with overturned porta-potties and lines of cops firing pepper spray into crowds. “Eight people were arrested on suspicion of failure to disperse and booked at the city jail, according to police,” reported OC Weekly in a blog post put up on Monday, July 29. “City vehicles, portable toilets, merchant windows and street signs were among the items damaged, and the loss of property ‘is still being determined,’ police said.” Apparently, people just didn’t feel like leaving. Here’s an excerpt of a Huntington Beach Police Facebook post, which also appears in the OC Weekly blog: “On the 7-28-13 at 7:16 PM officers encountered a large crowd at Main and Pacific Coast Highway. The crowd had gathered at the conclusion of the Van’s US Open of Surfing, an 8 day surf and skate event. A large fight broke out and when officers attempted to break up the disturbance the crowd moved into the downtown area. The crowds began fighting, damaging property and refused to disperse. HBPD requested mutual aid from other agencies to help disperse the crowd. The area was declared an unlawful assembly and officers have moved in to deal with the crowd and make arrests. The police now have control of the downtown area and the disturbance quelled.”
Look, we know Moore beat local favorite Courtney Conlogue pretty bad, but come on!
TULSI GABBARD D SAYS SAYS TIC NO TO DOMESTIC SPYING Tulsi Gabbard, the liberal eral Democrat who represents Hawaii’s 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives, is also captain in the Hawaii National Guard and thus generally supports the Defense Department in whatever they askk for. Given her background and the size of the militaryy in her home district, this iss understandable. But what’s fascinating is that she does NOT extend that courtesy to thee National Security Agency–the nation’s massive electronic eavesdropping ng service that has come under fire for spying on every American’s phone and email records. In fact, Gabbard so opposes that spying op-
eration–which is codenamed “PRISM,” according to revelations from former NSA analyst Edward Snowden, who leaked information on the program to the Guardian newspaper– that yesterday she voted for the Amash-Conyers Amendment, which would have radically defunded the PRISM program. “Countless men and women from my state of Hawai‘i and all across the country have worn the uniform and put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and our liberties,” Gabbard said in a July 24 press release. “I cannot, in good conscience, vote to take a single dollar from the pockets of hard-working taxpayers from across the country to pay for programs which infringe on the very liberties and freedoms our troops have fought and died for. Ben Franklin said, ‘They who give up liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.’” This bill wasn’t one of those safe votes, either, where a representative can vote his or her conscience because it’s passage or defeat is a foregone conclusion. The vote on Amash-Conyers was remark-
parent spy-on-everyone approach to fighting terrorism. And what about Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, the Democrat who represents Hawaii’s 1st District and wants to replace Democrat Brian Schatz (who is also a strong critic of the NSA PRISM program) in the U.S. Senate? She voted against the amendment, according to this blog post from Ian Lind. Her reason, according to Honolulu Civil Beat, was simple: “[Q]uick fixes [like Amash-Conyers] would have unintended consequences for the intelligence and law enforcement communities beyond the specific problems being targeted,” she said in a news release. “This issue should be the subject of a stand-alone bill that provides a complete review in an open forum involving all stakeholders, including the American public. If a thorough review shows that the law is bad, we should repeal it, not simply de-fund it.” Given that NSA official James Clapper has already LIED to a Senate Committee about PRISM (and received no apparent sanction), what chance does an “open forum involving all stakeholders” actually stand? And now for a sad note. Arsene “Blackie” Gadarian, a longtime fixture of Lahaina and Maui life, died on July 21 at the age of 91. Born in New York in 1921, Blackie and his wife Sara have spent many decades on Maui. He’s most famous around here for Blackie’s Machine Shop in Lahaina, but he also owned Blackie’s Bar, a Lahaina jazz club, from 1981 to 1995 (Gadarian said he was paid $1 for the use of his name for the various Blackie’s Pit Stop locations around Maui). Blackie was a classic curmudgeon. In fact, in his retirement Blackie was probably best known as a writer of many, many pithy letters to the editor–especially to The Maui News–about all manner of subjects. Sometimes he commented on national politics. Other times, he just wanted to make an off-the-wall observation. “Years ago there was a lot of roadkill– dogs, cats and even mongooses–on the streets of Maui,” he said in a May 11, 2008 letter to that paper. “I have seen very little roadkill lately. Either the animals are running faster or the drivers have bad aim.” Blackie was also a fan of this paper–even when he sat on the county’s Liquor Control Board of Adjudication. According to the obituary, the family is requesting that instead of flowers, those wishing to express condolences should make a donation to the Blackie’s scholarship at Lahainaluna High School. The address is Lahainaluna High School Foundation, “Blackie” Gardarian Vocational Scholarship Fund, PO Box 11617, Lahaina, HI 96761. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

NEW UH STUDY SAYS LAHAINA SEWAGE DAMAGING KAHEKILI BEACH In April 2012, Earthjustice sued the County of Maui on behalf of Hawaii Wildlife Fund, Surfrider Foundation, Sierra Club-Maui and West Maui Preservation Association under the federal Clean Water Act for the discharging of wastewater that occurs at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility’s injection wells. Now, the recentlycompleted 500-page Lahaina Groundwater Tracer Study seems to confirm these environmental concerns. The Lahaina facility serves the wastewater needs of the community as well as the major resorts along the coast, receiving about four million gallons of sewage a day, according to the study. The facility produces treated wastewater that is sold for landscaping and irrigation needs. Whatever is not sold is discharged underground through injection wells. Prompted by concerns about the impact of the injection well’s operations, research began to discover the amount, distribution and discharge points of nutrients and chemicals from these injection wells into the ocean. Beginning in July 2011, researchers from the University of Hawaii, led by marine and environmental geology professor Craig R. Glenn, added dye into the injection wells in order to track the water’s path. About three months later, they traced the dye to near-shore waters off Kahekili Beach. During the two years since, the news release states that scientific monitoring has confirmed a connection between the injection wells and the near-shore water.
The study reports that nearly 64 percent of this warmer, more acidic waste water reaches coastal water through submarine springs, bringing pollutants that “impact coastal water quality and result in elevated nutrient concentrations.” The lawsuit contends that the wastewater that is making its way to Kahekili Beach is endangering the public, contributing to algal growth, and harming the sensitive coral reef ecosystem due to the nutrient pollution it carries. “Kahekili Beach is a popular area for swimming, snorkeling, and other recreation in West Maui,” said Surfrider Foundation’s Angela Howe in a July 24 press release, “but this study shows that the injection wells discharge nutrients and other pollutants into the shallow, nearshore waters, which degrades water quality. We look forward to coming up with a solution that reduces this pollution for the benefit of everyone that uses these waters.” County spokesperson Lois Whitney said she was unable to comment on the study or the Earthjustice news release because of the pending litigation. The groups are currently engaged in settlement talks with the county to find a solution and a way to protect West Maui’s coastal beaches and reefs from wastewater damage.
quilt of plots growing green squash, red lettuce and purple taro, with unoccupied plots covered in blue tarp. Tucked away between a neighborhood and a cane field, Hali‘imaile Community Garden exists on two acres of land donated by Maui Land & Pineapple Company in 2006. The community garden provides members with the means to organically grow their own produce, promoting a lifestyle of food self-sufficiency. Hali‘imaile Community Garden secretary and treasurer Lori Feroldi said she’s kept track of her gardening expenses since she started in 2009, and growing her own fruits and vegetables really does make for a great deal. “It’s just about getting back to the ‘aina and knowing where your food comes from and what goes into it,” said Feroldi. “Even some organic producers use wax on their vegetables to make them look better. It’s unnecessary; I don’t need that inside of me. I don’t wax my cucumbers and they taste just as good.” To raise money for garden maintenance and repair, Hali‘imaile Community Garden is partnering with Flatbread Company in Paia. On Aug. 20, from 5-10pm Flatbread will be donating a portion of pizza purchases to the garden, as well as hosting a silent auction. Garden members have also banded together to publish a cookbook featuring recipes for healthy dishes that use products grown in the garden. The cookbook is available for purchase on their website Haliimailegarden.weebly.com. Members pay $100 a year per 10 foot by 20-foot plot, a fee that covers the water and mowing expenses of the garden. With a total of 100 plots, the garden is currently at about 70 percent occupancy, which leaves plenty of room for new members to join.
At less than $10 a month for the annual fee, the other expenses for tools and seed still comes out less than buying produce from the grocery store every week. With succession planting procedures and a warm year-round climate, a plot can continually provide for a small family. Because the garden is dedicated to growing organically, Feroldi and other gardeners have come up with a few inventive ways to keep away destructive pests. Dish soap does the trick to keep away aphids, while baking soda or chili powder will get rid of ants. One of Feroldi’s favorite things about being involved in the garden is the sense of community it provides. Often you’ll find members sharing their produce or helping each other weed or water. People come from all over the island with varying levels of aptitude to be involved, adding their own unique skills to the mix. With their community work days and garden potlucks, a working community is created. In addition to the individual plots, there’s a community herb garden and orchard that are cared for and enjoyed by all members. This year, the Goodwill Garden was also started as a way to “sow it forward” and share the bounty from one community to another. All the produce grown in the Goodwill Garden is donated to the Maui Food Bank and Hale Kau Kau to feed Maui’s hungry. “It’s a great partnership, because no one usually donates fresh produce,” said Feroldi. “Right now, we’re working on a crop of sweet potatoes that will be ready just in time for Thanksgiving.” ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com
HALIIMAILE COMMUNITY GARDEN NEEDS YOUR HELP When you drive through the gate, you can just make out the tops of the houses over the cane: the only reminder that you’ve entered a garden, not a fairy glen or Hobbit shire. In the middle of it all, the giant picnic table and benches made from an old tree trunk sitting beneath a kukui tree add to the feel. Once a eucalyptus grove, the garden now resembles a colorful patchwork

BREW NATION Pro-nationalism English Defence League activists seemed to be itching for a street brawl to break up a scheduled anti-nationalist demonstration in downtown Birmingham, England, on July 18, causing the city to mobilize more than 1,000 police–when officials arrived at a solution. Police shepherded “hundreds” of rowdy EDL operatives into the popular Bar Risa pub at 11am, confining them for three hours, until the anti-EDL rally had dissipated. (Given British habits, many EDLers decided to enjoy their confinement with a brew.) As a result, police reported only sporadic street scuffling. Bar Risa, perturbed by police pressure to host alleged “fascists,” donated its profits to the Midlands Air Ambulance service.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY For “beach season” in Qingdao, China, recently, middle-aged ladies returned to the shore of the Yellow Sea sporting their relatively revealing (though age-appropriate) bathing suits–but wearing distinctive cloth hoods with tiny holes only for the eyes, nose and mouth. To many in China, dark skin still signals laborers and fair skin the indoor “leisure” class, according to a July report on the business website Quartz.

In Shenzhen, China, one of the country’s richest cities, services are being openly advertised by “wet nurses” to supply adults with breast milk, either directly from the source or after pumping (and purchased by either the infirm or just rich people overconcerned with nourishment). These milk “suppliers” can earn at least four times the average personal income, with healthy, attractive women earning even more, of course, according to a July Agence France-Presse dispatch. Comments on China’s social media ranged from “It’s just a business” to “People become perverts when they are too rich and tire of other forms of entertainment.”
EVEN THE HOSPITALS ARE CROOKED Because Zimbabwe is reputedly among the world’s most corrupt countries, bribery is normal and makes the news only when innovators go above and beyond. The antipoverty organization Transparency International reported in July that one hospital in Harare had recently been imposing a $5 charge on mothers each time they screamed during childbirth (in addition to the $50 delivery fee). Furthermore, it has long been rumored that hospitals in Zimbabwe (and other countries) may detain mothers and their children at the hospital if they cannot pay the fees. Transparency International reported several days later, after finally obtaining a meeting with a government official, that the per-scream charge will be lifted.
LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Satan was thrust into the recent Texas legislature debate with pro-choicers shouting, “Hail, Satan!” at the right-to-life faction. But whom Satan had endorsed was not clear. A British organization called UK Church of Satan appeared to criticize the pro-choicers (according to Twitter comments) while the New York-based Church of Satan (founded in 1966 by Anton LaVey) insists on a woman’s right to choose, said its High Priest Peter Gilmore–although he acknowledged that shouting “Hail, Satan” to anti-abortion activists was “ludicrous and meaningless.”
WHAT WOULD JESUS FLY? Megachurch bishop Ira V. Hilliard told his Sugarland, Texas, congregation (New Light Christian Center) in June that one of his two private aircraft–a helicopter valued at about $1 million–needs new blades, but rather than pay it himself, he asked parishioners to each find it in their hearts to send him $52 “favor seeds” for the blades. (His ministry also owns a $2 million Hawker jet and a $3 million hangar.) To sweeten the deal, he virtually promised that a donor’s gift would be met by a “breakthrough favor” from God in the form of a car repair or their very own “dream” car either 52 days or 52 weeks later (according to a church letter described by the Christian Post).
QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS In May, a 24-year-old man accidentally shot a teenage boy in the leg with a highcaliber gun at a home in Santa Fe, Texas, in front of the boy’s mother, whose first reaction was to look up “gunshot” on WebMD–and then not to take her son to Mainland Medical Center until seven hours later. Deborah Tagle was charged, along with the shooter, for injury to a child. And Carole Longhorn, 66, struck a metal object in her garden in Norfolk, England, in June, and, though it looked like a projectile-bomb, she said she decided to take it inside and wash it off in the sink before calling police, who later detonated the World War II-era munition in a controlled explosion. Said her husband later: “You can imagine what I said to her.”
NEWS THAT SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE A June performance-art street demonstration in Glastonbury, England, got out of hand when a spectator took offense at one of the characters, who was dressed as a giant penis to promote a show by the troupe Nomadic Academy of Fools. The bystander grabbed the penis’ costume, but the penis’ colleague, Joanne Tremarco, who was dressed as a giant vagina, went to his defense, trying to calm the bystander until police arrived. ■

DRONES OVER HAWAII WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE EYES IN THE SKY OVER OUR STATE BY MALIA ZIMMERMAN

D
rones are used to target America’s enemy combatants on foreign soil, to roll across Mars in search of signs of life, to scale mountains or plunge to ocean depths to find and eliminate invasive species and to retrieve information for government, news or detective agencies. They can be nano-sized and purchased for under $50 or be as large as a 737 airliner and cost millions of dollars. As technology progresses, the applications for drone technology is as endless as it is controversial, and some 42 states including Hawaii have legislation pending to regulate drone use. If some key Hawaii lawmakers, military leaders and scientists get their way, Hawaii may well become one of six states selected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to join a pilot project that integrates

the use of drones and aircraft. Hawaii is competing with 50 other bids from 37 states and government officials here hope to team up with Alaska and Oregon to test drones in all climates and terrains. An announcement is expected by the federal agency that regulates American skies this December. Meanwhile, across the country, people continue to debate safety, liability, ethical and privacy issues surrounding drones.
DRONES OVER HAWAIIAN SKIES The U.S. Army 25th Infantry Division’s 2nd Stryker Brigade and its 3rd Infantry Brigade based at Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Air Force Base on Oahu incorporate about 120 drones into their surveillance and reconnaissance operations. The Hawaii Air Guard has another 24 drones that fly over
some of Hawaii’s key military bases. At a July 25 panel at the Plaza Club in Honolulu hosted by the Hawaii Venture Capital Association and Think Tech Hawaii, the state’s Adjunct General, Darryll Wong– who also heads the Hawaii Air Guard–emphasized how strictly drones are regulated here, even those being used by the military for intelligence gathering. The Hawaii Air Guard, which has 12 Raven drones that are hand-launched and another dozen Shadow drones that are carsized and launched off a rail, must apply a year ahead with the Hawaii National Guard to get approval to use the drones. While the military can use drones to spot enemy combatants and keep soldiers safe, or assist the government in assessing damage after natural disasters or eliminating invasive species, they also have endless scientific and commercial uses, Wong told the audience of about 200.
But Hawaii is currently stuck in a holding pattern. Technology has outpaced bureaucracy, Wong said, and he emphasized that the people who make laws and policy need to pass legislation that will catch up to technology.
HAWAII LEGISLATURE FAILS TO TACKLE ISSUE Many residents are skeptical of drones flying over Hawaiian skies because they’ve been used as a lethal weapon in war zones overseas. In addition, since drones can hold facial recognition software, thermal imaging cameras, microphones and license plate readers, there are privacy concerns from residents who don’t want drones spying on them or tracking their whereabouts. Senate Minority Leader Sam Slom, RHawaii Kai-Diamond Head, introduced Senate Bill 783 during the 2013 legislative session. Senators Russell Ruderman,
about privacy and limiting drone activity, others want drones incorporated into Hawaii’s airspace. Senate Public Safety and Military Affairs Chair Will Espero–who recently announced his intention to run for the 1st Congressional District seat in 2014 that’s currently held by Democrat Colleen Hanabusa–introduced a resolution in 2012 encouraging Hawaii to become a test site for unmanned aerial vehicles and drones. Espero said the commercial use of drones will help diversify and bring millions of dollars into Hawaii’s economy and create more high paying jobs. There are many benefits to drones, Espero said, including using them for search and rescue, emergency preparedness, fishing, fighting invasive species, atmospheric research and more. The biggest issue regarding the use of drones is safety, especially for air traffic and within populated areas, Espero said. Other resolutions that need to be reached include who the operators will be, what the rules will be and who will be in charge of enforcing them. Rep. Gene Ward, R-Hawaii Kai, said it would be “big time for Hawaii” if the FAA selects the 50th state as a test site for drones. Ward also believes commercial drone usage would bring millions of dollars into the Hawaii economy, especially if companies were offered incentivized

D-Puna-Kau, and Malama Solomon, DHilo-Kona, co-signed it. The bill proposed to regulate drones, limit how the data that is gathered can be used and requires reporting by the military agencies annually as to the type of data collected and its disposition. But after being assigned to three committees including the transportation, public safety and judiciary committees, the bill failed to even get a hearing. “Technically this bill, which is still alive in the 2014 legislative session that begins in mid-January, creates a new chapter for unmanned aerial vehicles,” said Slom. “I am not into conspiracy theories or anything else, but because drones are proliferating and there are potentials for wrongdoing, there should be limitations and reporting on their use.” Slom said private commercial users have operated some form of drones for many years for information gathering such as real estate companies gathering external property information and photographs. The senators who supported the bill wanted a full discussion on the widespread and increasing use of government drones, both nationally and locally. “Hawaii prides itself on privacy and regulatory protections, and legislation regulating drone use should meet constitutional requirements,” Slom said. “The government’s primary responsibility is security, however security should not come at the expense of personal liberty or absence of constitutional limitations. As we have seen during this year, there has been a proliferation of government data gathering through many sources including drones and they have been the object of several controversial revelations including those of former Hawaii resident Edward Snowden.” Avi Soifer, a constitutional scholar and dean of the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii-Manoa who also spoke at the Think Tech event, said privacy is a major concern and an ongoing part of the debate. While there is no reference to privacy in the U.S. Constitution, Soifer noted that people cherish their privacy and even get upset by cameras mounted on traffic lights. While some lawmakers are concerned

mercial drone industry and investors who believe there is a path to profit. One important aspect is creating analytical software that can turn the data collected in to something useable, Ralston said. Ralston also stressed the importance of universities training the state’s work force and noted the supercomputer on Maui is a great asset. The industry needs to open a dialog with government, Ralston said, including the FAA, the agency he said that is two years late with issuing their drone use guidelines.

DOT DRONE HELD HOSTAGE
Joe Lopez holding our future
The FAA strictly regulates the use of drones in Hawaii airspace, so much so that the Department of Transportation has been unable to get approval to fly a drone it purchased in 2010 for $75,000. The state Department wanted to fly the drone over Honolulu Harbor to protect the harbor from potential terrorist activity, but the FAA denied the request because of heavy air traffic in the area. The state did not check with the FAA about flying the drone until it received inquiries from the news website Hawaii Reporter in 2010 and again in January 2011.
The FAA then told the state the drone could not be deployed in the crowded airspace adjacent to Honolulu International Airport and Hickam Air Force Base. The drone had already been built, so the state had to accept it. Right now, the ill-planned purchase sits in the DOT Harbor headquarters as state officials ponder whether to sell the aging drone or continue to wait for FAA approval that may never come. Lt. Gen. Jeffrey A. Remington (Ret.), a three-star U.S. Air Force general who now works as an independent aviation consultant, wants to see the FAA take swift action to regulate drone use so they can proliferate here. Remington, who sat in the audience at the Think Tech event, said briefly after the panel spoke that drones are not the problem. He said unmanned vehicles are reliable, and will do exactly what they are programmed to do, flying as they are directed and landing within inches of where they are told to land.
DRONE ON? Hawaii consistent is rated lowest in the nation among states in terms of business and investment climate. That’s in part why so many individuals and organizations now are strongly lobbying for the local manufacture and use of drones in Hawaii as an economic stimulus. There is no question technology has outstripped government oversight nationally and locally. So the issue is whether a new economic engine be developed and allowed to proliferate while taking into consideration individual civil liberty concerns and typical bureaucracy by government or will this just be another example of a debate that drones on.

The Passion of Bret Pafford Gannon’s new menu is a stunning success

Executive Chef Bret Pafford
’m kind of obsessed with Gannon’s right now. And not just with their new menu, which has quietly rolled out over the last couple of months–it’s the the whole package. The place has become a hotspot for nightlife in Wailea. Chef Bret Pafford shows great passion for fresh fish and all things made by hand. They recently won Best Restaurant with a View in our Best of Maui issue. And they have a fantastic happy hour, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner. Gannon’s A Pacific View is the third in Chef Beverly Gannon’s empire of restaurants on Maui, joining Hali’imaile General Store and Joe’s Bar and Grill. Gannon, credited as one of the founding chefs of Hawaii Regional Cuisine,
is a big personality to work with. When Pafford came on board as Executive Chef for Gannon’s last September, I was excited to see what direction he would take with menu and restaurant. Pafford confessed to a bit of wanderlust in his past, but said his world travels have shaped his palate, mostly for fine tasting food. Little by little, he says, he’s created a menu that his kitchen can build from scratch. “I like to downplay my menu,” says Pafford. “The bleu cheese in the gratin is hand-smoked, and so is the prosciutto. At lunch, our French fries are handmade. I love the art of saucier and the sauces and soups reflect that. We are getting a lot done in our kitchen back there.” When I visited, I found the poke was succulent and a delicious starter. While it can be a simple dish, Pafford translated glorious cubes of ahi with cucumber, onion and avocado into a cultivated stack topped with tobiko micro greens. You scoop it all up with taro chips. Pafford’s personal menu favorites are the fresh fish dishes. The sashimi is raw bar at its finest–an icy platter displaying cross sections of sliced yellowtail and ahi, all garnished with three different honey yuzu dipping sauces.
“The fish is just so beautiful right now,” says Pafford. “I work personally with our fish purveyor to choose only the best cuts for our poke and sashimi. Those dishes are so elegant because the fish is pristine.” The miso-glazed walu on the pupu menu captured me as well. Imagine fat pieces of marinated walu grilled and then roosted on Gannon’s Asian slaw inside of a lettuce cup. I could eat it everyday. The restaurant opens at 8:30am for breakfast, with Benedicts, omelets, pancakes, fresh fruit on yogurt and bread pudding. The steak and eggs are made with filet, and the hash comes from short rib. The croissant sandwich is the size of a football (ok, maybe not, but the thing is huge). It’s a dream breakfast menu served from some of the best views in Wailea. You can literally choose what beach looks best for the day from up there. Lunch starts at 11am but the menu generously shares the the hours with a special brunch section that cherry picks from breakfast. Lunch is packed with comfort foods like steak frittes, Bev’s chili and cheese with corn chips, a Kobe burger and ribs borrowed from Hali’imaile. At lunch I Continued on page 15

I couldn’t resist the rich ribeye, which is salt-crusted and accompanied by bleu cheese potato gratin and a red wine reduction. As if a glorious menu isn’t enough to keep him busy, Pafford transforms the restaurant into a club once a month at Gannon’s After Dark. Last month’s 80’s Party was a huge hit. This Saturday, you can catch it again with DJs Joe Cortez and Jay J starting at 9pm. The theme is 80’s again, and

gravitated toward the seared ahi panzanella and seafood Louie salads, which were quiet satisfying. As for dinner, don’t start without a cocktail from Triston Rodrigues. He’s been with the Gannon family for years, coming down the mountain from Hali’imaile General Store. The Awapuhi is his Red Bar’s signature cocktail, and it’s zing of ginger liquor meets Kettle One in a martini. We also fell for the Mana Rita, which Rodrigues gently infuses with jalepeno overnight. The benefit is a mellow spiciness without an all-out burn.

The To Do List There have been way better female sex comedies than this one
The To Do List ★★★★★ Rated R / 104 Min.
A
ubrey Plaza stars as Brandy, a high school graduate who spent her four years in pursuit of academic excellence. Her best friends convince her that she wasted her time as the school’s straight-A uber-nerd. Now, Brandy is convinced that she must lose her virginity and become a sexual dynamo before her freshman year of college. Her summer before entering campus life consists of being a lifeguard, battling her annoying sister (Rachel Bilson, who’s a riot) and going through an X-rated to-do list of various positions and personal degradations. The To Do List isn’t the first film of its type and doesn’t apply its “novelty” especially well. While it may be rare to see a sex comedy with female leads and a message of girl power equality in dealing with sexual “rules,” this movie is far from the first to ar-
rive at this approach. Movies as old as Where the Boys Are, which was made in 1960 and remade in 1984, were both noteworthy entries of “Girls, let’s go get some action” cinema. Bridesmaids was both hilarious and stunningly raunchy, providing proof positive that some of our sharpest comedic performers and their audiences were women. On the one hand, it should never come to anyone’s surprise that women can make and enjoy crude comedies about the pursuit of sexual fulfillment. The problem with this latest one is that it aims to be the female American Pie and winds up Van Wilder for girls. The premise itself is offensive, even as it thinks it’s being empowered: ladies, lose your virginity and become sexual animals for men, right now! Great. Gloria Steinem and I will roll our eyes in unison. Of course, it helps a lot that this is a comedy. If only it were a better one. Plaza, a scene stealer on TV’s Parks and Recreation, is funny but overly self-conscious and so is her movie. There are some good laughs but most of the time, it rehashes gags that are as old as Porky’s . Too many scenes undermine the feminist take on sexual empowerment. Sure, Brandy is a one-woman
Hilarious!
sexual revolution but why have her eat excrement (especially since it was done funnier 10 years ago in American Wedding?). Why have her lose her bra at an outdoor pool and be endlessly ridiculed? Even Jason Biggs was never mocked so viciously during his erogenous pursuits. The many familiar faces in the cast can’t save the movie. Instead of comic secret weapons like Andy Samberg and Bill Hader (whose wife wrote and directed the movie) stepping up and really giving the movie some juice, they merely give their clichéd, cardboard thin roles as much mileage as possible, then vanish from the mind once their scene ends. Great teen comedies are typically stolen by an overprotective Dad, as evidenced in Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You and Valley
Girl. Here, Clark Gregg, Agent Coulson in the Marvel franchise movies, scores big laughs as “Judge Clark.” His straight arrow dad wouldn’t be out of place in the 1950s and his too brief scenes are as good as this gets. But Bilson has never made this strong an impression and is a great foil for Plaza. The overpraised but still sharper Easy A handled this kind of plot better, but without gross-out visuals and non-stop vulgarity. I’ve always liked R-rated teen comedies, whether it’s Revenge of the Nerds or the potently crude Weird Science. The best examples of this genre have a charm and even a surprising sweetness to them. Not this one. The To Do List demonstrates how degrading one’s self in a sex romp can be an equal opportunity mistake.■

Horoscope
Sign Language LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Unfortunately, you’ve developed the cynical habit of assuming the worst about what someone thinks of you. I don’t expect you to not give a shit; although a well-developed ego can make you mostly independent of others’ opinions, at root we’re social creatures, designed to care about what people think. However, please ditch the automatic negative assumption; it’s usually untrue. Luckily, this week’s an excellent time to refute and subvert those nasty habits of mind, and replace them with something better—put the burden of negativity on those concerned: assume everyone adores you unless they explicitly tell you otherwise. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Mistaken identities will be a recurring theme in the next fortnight. This week, people are likely to believe you to be someone or something you’re not. Indulge them, at least temporarily, by allowing them their illusions. You’re currently expanding to occupy more of your full potential, and someone else’s shoes might fit you better than your own right now. It’s not totally a lie, either: The delicious irony that’s only possible this week is that by pretending to be something you’re not, you invent the possibility of becoming exactly that. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) I wish I could hypnotize you, because you’ve temporarily forgotten something so basic it’s rooted in your essential nature. I’d love to access your subconscious, which knows there’s no need to flail like you did these past weeks. Your anxieties should wash over you harmlessly, not erode your confidence. Please stop thrashing, so you can remember that you’re not weak or desperate enough to be mean. Your immense power allows you to be universally gentle and generous, as long as you remember it. Relax. Take a deep breath and let it out, slowly. As much as you can, let tension sift from your muscles like grains of sand. Then let the following message settle in as deeply as possible: You’re more than strong; you are mighty. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Identity issues! People are so keen to sniff out whatever you’re hiding. As the planets alter their subtle cosmic dance, your challenges change: Too many people are on the verge of discovering your most secret personalities, of connecting the dots between your inner Peter Parkers and Spidermen. It goes without saying that your superheroic effectiveness would be dramatically impaired by concrete discovery along these lines, which is why you should never allow that to happen. This week, do whatever it takes to throw your clued-in companions off the scent, and preserve your clandestine alter egos. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Your subconscious mind is a rescue dog. Your task is as admirable as theirs (to sniff out people trapped in the devastation of disaster). If all they find is corpses, those heroic hounds get so despondent they won’t eat or play. Thus their handlers make sure to end the day with a successful rescue—arranged if necessary—so the well-trained pups can discover, delightedly, “survivors.” Encountering obstacle after obstacle as you have can be as depressing as a day of digging up dead people. Handle yourself. Sustain your spiritual stamina by setting yourself up for success every now and then, so you can keep doing your job until it’s done. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) The first few generations of robots gifted with “artificial intelligence” may be able to observe, learn, reason, and act with impressive acuity. But they’ll be incapable of experiencing emotion or taking inspired, intuitive leaps. Our biological predilections might be viewed as inefficient handicaps by a machine consciousness; contrarily, they’d be our greatest gifts and strengths. Don’t accept the negative judgments being thrust upon you. Like our future robot friends, your critics are operating from their limited understanding of reality. You can’t reasonably blame them for their logical assumptions, but you know better than to take their underdeveloped censure to heart, don’t you?
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Canines, from wolves to poodles to dingoes, have managed to populate virtually the entire planet. They all come from a single ancestor, called the dawn dog, which originated 40 million years ago on the plains of North America. Their evolutionary strategy: extreme adaptability. Your own personal evolution should borrow from the genetically resourceful genus canidae. Don’t get locked into any one version of yourself. Since in the next month you may be required to manifest anything from savagely effective timber wolf to pampered Shih Tzu to loyal Labrador retriever, and a host of other specialized extremes besides, make sure you’re ready and able to move in whatever direction the situation demands. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Right now, millions of blips of information are coursing around you and soaking into you: cellphone calls, radio waves, TV transmissions, etc. Despite being unable to sense them unaided, you don’t doubt their existence. You know they’re really there because others invented machines to generate or use them. Unfortunately, no one’s made a machine to detect other things you can’t see or smell, yet need to believe in. Your greatest sources of strength and comfort lie far beyond the range of conventional detection. Don’t let unrestrained skepticism keep you from them; take them on faith. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) China Miéville describes the titular location of his amazing novel, Perdido Street Station, as “the knot of architectural tissue where the fibres of the city congealed… the great variegated fortress of dark brick and scrubbed concrete and wood and steel and stone, the edifice that yawned hugely at the city’s vulgar heart.” I like imagining the actions you set into motion ages ago as trains, all running toward a similar “coagulate of miles of railway line.” Inside that dark, beautiful, and slightly scary internal junction, past errors and triumphs will intersect and interact, shaping everything about your near future, from the weather on down. Don’t despair. This conjuncture of key personal events is a crossroads, not a judgment. In other words, forget the many engines you rode in on. The one you leave on is the one that matters. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) 4 shots of absinthe and 4 hours of dancing later, I kept thinking of your recurring struggle to vanquish your worst habits. Given enough time and support, you could do it. But why should you go to such desperate and difficult lengths, when transforming them into praxes that help and feed you is so much better and infinitely easier? (My personal solution is to indulge my bad habits in equal parts with the good ones.) It’s much simpler to divert the fast-flowing rivers of your damaging impulses than to dam them. Easier said than done, you say. Not necessarily. Since this week may present some startlingly effortless and effective ways to do just that, it may be easier done than said.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Vultures have incredible immune systems. Habitually dining on rotting flesh makes them hardy; they’re naturally gifted with strong stomachs and a powerful resistance to viral and bacterial agents that would kill a less resilient creature. You couldn’t be less like those scavenging birds, but you might want to take your cue from them anyway. Your spiritual immune system could use some toughening up, especially considering some of the fucked-up crap that’s likely to come your way next month. Wouldn’t it be useful if the next time someone condemned you to eat shit and die, you could (metaphorically, at least) eat shit and live? CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Dig deep. You may resist articulating your feelings because they sound ridiculous out loud. But don’t let them lurk deep in your soul’s most secret crannies, malignly pulling strings and making you act out in absurd ways. Emotions are irrational; it’s hardwired into their essential nature. Try to understand them anyway. These feelings are probably rooted in hormones, bowel movements, existential dread, loneliness, sexual frustration, or a myriad other possible factors—but not whatever you’re actually directing them at. Be careful of that. This week, instead of acting out, figure it out. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com.
