NEW WEST MAUI LAND APPRAISALS IN!

MPD OFFICER NELSON JOHNSON ARRESTED, PART DEUX

LC INDEFINITELY NITELY DEFERS LIFE’S S A BEACH PROFANITY PROSECUTION OSECUTION Last week in this space I reported eported that the Maui County Liquor Controll Board of Adjudication was preparing to smack-down ck-down Haui’s Life’s A Beach in Kihei forr permitting “obscene language, songs, or entertainment” ntertainment” in defiance of the county’s liquor rules. The incident, according to the agenda, took place on Feb. 16 of this year at approximately 12:50am. The agenda for the Dec. 5, 2013 hearing listed Life’s A Beach owner Howard Grunes as all set to plead no contest.

Overheard

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

According to a tiny, byline-less blurb buried on page 4 of the Dec. 4 Maui News (it’s where newspapers hide all their legitimate scoops) sourced to the vaguely sounding “police records,” Maui Police Officer Nelson Johnson got arrested again–this time on Monday, Dec. 2. The charge? Guess: “Maui police officer Nelson Johnson has been charged with second-degree assault and two counts of physical abuse for allegedly slapping his daughter, police say,” reported the paper. That part we know–MPD slapped Johnson in irons back on Nov. 20 for allegedly hitting his teenage daughter so hard she suffered a concussion (Johnson posted $2,000 bail and was placed on administra-

But it never happened. According to Grunes, before the hearing the LC told him they were pulling the case from the agenda. Grunes added that he had no idea if the LC would bringg it up p

If Maui County Council Member Mike White’s mission was to gum up Mayor Alan Arakawa’s proposal to buy 186 acres of Launiupoko land, then he’s well on his way to success. If you’ll recall, back in November Arakawa announced that he’d struck a deal with Makila Land Co. (Peter Martin, Jim Riley and Glenn Tremble, according to state records) to buy that coastal acreage for $13 million. The purchase would secure land necessary for a public park stretching from the Pali to Puamana–a longtime dream of Arakawa’s–as well as make it easy for the county to move Honoapi‘ilani Highway inland when climate change-spurred sea level rise makes it impossible to use the current route. Right off the bat, White took exception to the proposal. He dismissed Makila’s Dec. 31 deadline for signing the deal, publicly rejected the $13 million as too high and called for new appraisals. A few weeks later two new numbers came in: a $9.4 million reappraisal and a $6.6 million appraisal. Steve Goodfellow, who is also a partner in Makila, told the Maui County Council that the land-owners could easily go back and get yet another appraisal that’s more than $13 million, according to the Dec. 4 Maui News. Goodfellow was reportedly also pissed that the Council’s Budget & Finance Committee had uttered the dreaded “C” word (that would be “condemnation”). If the proposed park and the moving of the highway is as important as administration officials have been saying, then condemning the land is definitely the way to go, though I doubt the County Council meant it as anything other than a negotiating tactic. As for what will actually happen to the land, that’s anyone’s guess at this point. The County Council certainly didn’t surprise anyone by deferring the matter at their Dec. 6 meeting, meaning there’s just one more County Council meeting (Friday, Dec. 20)

before we all hit Makila’s year-end deadline. Of course, the Council could come to some sort of agreement that suits all sides by Dec. 20, and then schedule a special meeting before the end of the year to vote on the thing again (two votes are required). Whether that’s more likely than the Pacific simply swallowing the parcels remains to be seen.

tive leave). Now here’s the new stuff: “Johnson was recently sought on a warrant, police said after felony charges were filed,” The Maui News reported. “Police arrested Johnson on Monday, y, and he was later released after postingg $5,000 bail, police records show.”” Whoa–Warrant? $5,000 bail? ail? This appears to be an entirely new arrest for an entirely new incident–not simply the MPD rearrested Johnson to formally charge him with something new. KITV reported as much on Dec. 5. “Nelson Johnson, 46, was as charged with two counts off abuse of a family or household member with injury and one count of assault ult in the second degree,” the Honolulu TV news station reported. “Police did not reveal eal who the victim was in this latest incident.” I contacted Wailuku attorney ney David Cain, who is representing Johnson, ohnson, but he said he hadn’t heard anything hing about any second arrest and would check it out. Johnson apparently remains on administrative dministrative leave. And for those at home keeping ping score, Johnson is indeed the same officer who ho MauiTimee Publisher Tommy Russo says slapped apped him for trying to film him during the infamous famous Dog The Bounty Hunter incident back ck in April 2011. A civil case concerning that incident dent is pending.

again, and declined further comment. Officials at the LC were similarly tight-lipped. “Complaint and Accusation No. 2013-53 against Haui Inc. dba Haui’s Life’s A Beach was deferred by the Liquor Control Adjudication Board pending review by the Department of the Corporation Counsel of a possible legal issue,” LC Deputy Director Traci Fujita Villarosa said in a Dec. 9 email to me. “I do not know if or when it will return to Board’s agenda in the future.”

fered by the Hawaii State Public Library System. The HSPLS also has added services to help patrons learn how to speak the Hawaiian language. The HSPLS Mobile Netbook Loan Program offers netbook computers for loan at 37 public libraries across the state. The netbooks will be available for a three-week loan period–free-of-charge–for those with a valid library card. Each computer features Microsoft Office 2010 programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. They are also Internet compatible. “We are delighted to offer our HSPLS Mobile program and envision it as an exciting new way to bridge the digital divide in Hawaii,” said State Librarian Richard Burns. “It is a unique opportunity to bring technology to Hawaii’s people and share our abundant e-resources and free services through our HSPLS website.” The cost of the computers was covered by a federal Library Services and Technology Act grant. The HSPLS is also now offering Zinio for Libraries, the world’s largest newsstand for eMagazines. The system will feature more than 20 complete full-color digital magazines, which can be viewed on most Internet-enabled devices through the HSPLS website. “Zinio for Libraries is the perfect way for people who love to read magazines to read on the go,” said Ann Fujioka, HSPLS Technical Services Section Manager. “Patrons with a valid HSPLS library card can choose from a wide variety of the latest magazines including Rolling Stone, Cosmopolitan, Newsweek, National Geographic and more, with no waiting, and no loan period to worry about.” In order to read the digital magazines, patrons will need to create two accounts– a library Zinio account and a free Zinio. com account. The eMagazines also can be accessed on mobile devices through the

Zinio Reader app. Learning how to speak Hawaiian has been made easier via the new, free Mango Languages and HSPLS website. The Mango Languages system allows patrons to take lessons at their own pace. You can review and practice your language skills as you advance through each lesson. Memory building exercises are built into each lesson to help you retain what you learn. Mango also provides an option where you can record your speech and compare it directly to audio from a native speaker to hear exactly how to adjust your accent; intuitive popups will also help you with pronunciation. Mango can quickly get you to a point where you feel comfortable speaking the language by using locally relevant conversational encounters that can be used in real-life situations. The HSPLS has also partnered with Chilifresh to develop a new app called “Hawaii Mobile.” The mobile app–available for both iOS and Android devices–ties into the library system where you can browse the HSPLS catalog; scan a barcode from a book, DVD or CD to check availability; view checked out/ reserved/hold items; renew items and check account information such as items borrowed, due dates, fines, and more. To install HSPLS’ mobile app, scan the QR codes for iOS or Android devices, or search “chilifresh hawaii” in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store on your mobile device. Funding for these electronic services was also provided by the federal Library Services and Technology Act, which is administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. For more information on all the new services, visit the HSPLS website at librarieshawaii. org or phone your nearest public library. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

This year’s Na Mele O Maui Song and Art Competition–held at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on Dec. 5–featured Maui county students from 16 schools. The 41st annual competition–the Valley Isle’s only county wide Hawaiian song and art competition–is dedicated to the preservation of native culture. It was designed to perpetuate Hawaiian music, language and arts. The competition strives to foster education and enlightenment of Hawaii’s heritage. The theme of this year’s event was “Na Wahi Pana Aloha Hawaii, Beloved Places of Hawaii,” providing students the opportunity to sing and create artwork about cherished places in the state. Classes from kindergarten to grade 12 participated in the song competition. Each class performed two songs in Hawaiian. The first was the Contest Song which was chosen by the committee to fit the theme. The second song was a Choice Song selected by participating classes to reflect the theme. The 2013 Art Competition finalists were honored in a special awards presentation and their winning artwork was displayed on stage. The overall winner at the event was Kamehameha Schools Maui ‘Opio Division Grades 9-12. The Hawaiian Language Award went to Paia Elementary Division II Grades 2-3. News Of The Weird SOMETHING IN THE AIR Is the signature smell of Texas A&M University more “Italian lemon, bergamot and iced pineapple” (that open into “a body of vivid florals, raw nutmeg and cinnamon”) or more “bat feces” and “chilifest stink”? The two commentaries were contrasted in a November Wall Street Journal report on the introduction of Masik Collegiate Fragrances’ Texas A&M cologne (one of 17 Masik college clients) at around $40 for a 1.7-ounce bottle. Louisiana State University’s scent conjures up, insisted one grad, the campus’s oak trees, but so far has pulled in only $5,500 for the school. (To a football rival of LSU, the school’s classic smell is less oak tree than “corn dog.”) The apparent gold standard of fan fragrance is New York Yankees cologne, which earned the team nearly $10 million in 2012.

FATHER OF THE YEAR Among America’s most prolific “fathers” (in this case, perhaps better considered “eggfertilizers”) are Nathaniel Smith, age 39, who claimed on TV’s Divorce Court in September that he is the father of 27, and the late Samuel Whitney, whose grown stepdaughter Lexie Woods learned that he claimed 54 before he died in July at age 87. Smith (known in Dayton, Ohio, as “Hustle Simmons”) insisted that he is a fine father (doesn’t smoke or drink, keeps contact with most of the kids, has “only” 21 child-support orders out), and besides, he told WHIO-TV, “I know of people who have even more than me.” Among Whitney’s belongings, said Woods, were a “pile” of birth certificates and a stash of maximum-strength Viagra. “He was a likable man, a ladies’ man.”

LATEST COLLATERAL DAMAGE In October, a 28-year-old man, reeling from a domestic argument in Port Richey, Fla., put a gun to his head and, against his girlfriend’s pleas, fired. As a neighbor across the street stood on her porch, the suicide bullet left the victim’s head and made three wounds on the neighbor’s leg, sending her to the hospital. And about a week later, on the Norwegian island of Vesteroy, a moose hunter missed his target but hit an obscured cottage in the distance, wounding a man in his 70s as he answered nature’s call. He was airlifted to Ullevaal University Hospital in Oslo.

ANIMAL SACRIFICE IN AMERICA In September, Orthodox Jewish communities once again staged traditional kaparot, in which chickens are killed in a prescribed way for the purpose of “transferring” a believer’s latest sins over to the chicken (whose death banishes the sins). In many such ceremonies, the chickens are donated for food, but protesters in Los Angeles criticized rogue practitioners who simply tossed carcasses into the trash. In November, Miami-Dade County animal services found a severely injured chicken with a family’s 4-by-6 photo-

graph protruding from its chest, having been haphazardly “implanted,” along with a note containing several hand-written names, apparently a casualty of local Santeria services.

THIS WEEK IN TOILET NEWS Toilets are always a favorite protest symbol, most recently employed by David Labbe, disputing a zoning decision by officials in Augusta, Maine, preventing the sale of his house to Dunkin’ Donuts (for, he said, three times what he paid), and he has begun lining his property with discarded toilets. Augusta-native Labbe says he has given up on his city and his neighbors (who fear traffic problems if a Dunkin Donuts opens). On the same day, coincidentally, toilets made news in Los Angeles, whereYoYo Li was about to open the city’s first toilet-themed restaurant, patterned after several in Taiwan in which diners squat at tables and eat off commode-shaped serving vessels.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Twice again, in November, men wrongfully convicted of major, chilling crimes, who were finally freed after serving long sentences, claimed upon release that they were–somehow–not bitter. Ryan Ferguson was released in Missouri after serving almost 10 years for a murder he surely knew nothing about (convicted because a prosecutor withheld exculpatory evidence). Derrick Deacon was freed in New York after nearly 25 years–served because the eyewitness (who finally recanted) had identified Deacon out of fear of retaliation by the Jamaican gang member she actually saw.

TRUE LOVE It was Linda Ducharme’s turn in the spotlight in November as one of a seemingly increasing number of people who commit to bethrothing themselves to inanimate objects (“objectophiles,” “mechaphiles”). The Gibsonton, Fla., woman’s spouse is a Ferris wheel called the Sky Diva, and their relationship was chronicled on the Logo TV channel’s show “What!?” Most famously, Erika La Tour Eiffel of San Francisco staged her 2008 wedding to the Eiffel Tower.

WEIRD DEATH UPDATE A formal investigation into the strange death of British intelligence code-breaker Gareth Williams concluded in November with a police judgment that the death was an accident, despite the body’s having been discovered inside a zippered and padlocked garment bag in an otherwise unused bathtub in his London apartment. An earlier inquest into the 2010 death had unsatisfactorily failed to rule out foul play, setting up the police examination, but two facts stood out, according to the officer in charge: The key to the padlock was found within easy reach of the bag, and, according to experts, even though no usable fingerprints or DNA was found in the apartment, it had not been “deep-cleaned” (as might be expected in a death with intel-op implications). ■

Altruistic Aptitude I always get asked, What do you give someone who already has everything? The answer’s simple: just find a local Maui charity or campaign that needs funding and make gift donations in their name. There are organizations all over the island–our recent Charity Gift Guide had a huge listing of them. Still at a loss? Try the Mo‘okiha o Pi‘ilani–they’re raising funds to launch their made-by-the-community Polynesian voyaging canoe in January. Indiegogo.com

By now, we’re all much too familiar with the horror stories of Christmas shopping. Big Box retailers here and on the Mainland are cramped, frantic places even without the holiday pressure. Why do we put up with endless lines in parking lots and checkstands, to say nothing of aisles and aisles filled with junk made largely by poor people thousands of miles away working for giant multinational corporations that are only concerned with bottom-line profits? There’s a better way. Here’s our guide to products and services made here on Maui. It’s an eclectic, off-beat list of stuff that only exists here, but we’re pretty sure that if you look hard enough, you’ll find something special for your loved ones. So save some time, energy and sanity and shop local this year. We’ll all be glad you did.

Better Than Butter What’s up with the holiday tins of butter cookies? Yeah, they look festive from the outside but the contents are anything but. Plus, they’re made in India. How about instead giving real baked goods from one of our many local bakeries. You can find lots of these sweet treats at local markets like Puk Sup and Takamiya, or you can head straight to the bakery itself. Many of them are well-known for specialties: Komoda’s–cream puffs and stick donuts; Maui Dee-Lites–shortbread cookies; Four Sisters–butter rolls and cheese rolls; S&J Bakery–pies and breads; Patticakes Bakery– mac nut snow balls; Leoda’s–pies and breads; Stillwell’s–ditto; HomeMaid: manju and malasadas. The Royal Scrub The Queen Bee products made on Maui are hand-crafted by an artisanal herbalist and esthetician team with their own bees raised in Kula. The resulting honey-based organic products are both top quality and coveted. “This is one of the best exfoliants I have used,” says Haiku Esthetician Emily Grace. “Besides that it works amazing to get rid of those crusty dry skin cells. It’s made with organic ingredients like raw honey, green papaya enzymes and almond and apricot meal. It’s also inexpensive for the priceless work it does.” Queen Bee has lots of other amazing products, too, like lip balm and body moisturizers. $15-$30 Emily Grace Esthetics 810 Kokomo Rd., Haiku; 808-575-2222; Emilygraceesthetics.com Green Ti 40 Market St., Wailuku; 808-242-8788; Greentimaui.com Paragon Salon 1160 Makawao Ave., 808-573-1300, paragonsalonmaui.com

Feather arts is one of the oldest practiced art forms on this island. It’s the ancient practice of very carefully stringing and sewing feathers into bands, leis, capes, standards and garments. In fact, Maui is renowned for its pheasant hat bands. These days, the art form takes contemporary and traditional forms but either way, these items will become family heirlooms.

‘Desolation of Smaug’ It’s for die-hard J.R.R. Tolkien fans only The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 161 Min.

I

t’s been 10 years since Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won the Best Picture Academy Award and his original fantasy film trilogy concluded. It seems that Hobbit Mania peaked a decade ago, with Jackson’s second prequel trilogy receiving mixed to indifferent responses so far, even from most die-hard Ring fans. I find myself in a strange position, as I spent 2001-2003, like most film fans, giddily awaiting each installment. My anticipation has given way to obligation. The story so far: Bilbo (Martin Freeman), a group of dwarves and Gandolf (Ian McKellen) find the latest leg of their journey involving a pivotal encounter with a dragon named Smaug (whose digitally manipulated voice and motion-captured movement belong to Benedict Cumberbatch). In addition to the army of angry Orcs on their trail, our heroes have a bigger problem: Bilbo has secretly kept possession of a certain ring... The problems that plagued the unsteady

prior entry are still an issue. Freeman is giving a droll, low-key performance that would sort-of work for a romantic comedy but not here. His modest performance can’t carry the movie. Bilbo’s pivotal attraction to the all-powerful ring doesn’t come across and Freeman’s feature-length performance isn’t half as interesting as Ian Holm’s brief but memorable Bilbo in the earlier films. Everyone here suffers in comparison to the earlier performances. McKellen’s still got it, though his appearances are jarringly on and off. Richard Armitage’s Thorin can glower intensely but he’s no match for Viggo Mortensen. Even with the gallery of goofy dwarves, the depth and range of emotions Elijah Wood and Sean Astin brought as Hobbits is badly needed and truly missed. Evangeline Lily plays Tauriel, a battle-ready Elf, created entirely for the new film series; her Vulcan-esque ears are fetching but her character and performance lack the soulfulness Liv Tyler brought to Arwen. There’s a romantic subplot forced on Lily that never develops the emotion it should. For that matter, aside from some knockout action sequences, no one on screen can stir the audience the way the original cast did. Bringing back Orlando Bloom’s Legolas isn’t much help: aside from his skill for kill-

If only the movie were this cool

ing foes quickly, he’s one of the least interesting characters in these movies. As an action movie, Jackson demonstrates his craftsmanship at staging astonishing set pieces of enormous scale. A giant spider attack is as gag-inducing as his arachnid set piece from the 2005 King Kong remake. A river barreling escape is the movie’s high point, a genuinely thrilling, delightfully off-the-wall barrage of arrows, decapitations and bodies bouncing and falling everywhere. Jackson may fail to recreate the chemistry of his original, unbeatable ensemble players but he still orchestrates the carnage and chaos with the playful finesse of his earlier works. The narrative drags its feet getting to the talking, fire-breathing dragon, with too many side characters and narrative distractions. Once Smaug is finally unveiled, he

proves to be an impressively vivid special effect. Cumberbatch is no Andy Serkis but he renders Smaug an interesting, arrogant creature and it’s amusing how much the monster resembles the actor. Fantasy film lovers will note that, for the all the technological breakthroughs in film effects, nothing here beats the 1981 Dragonslayer. For that matter, even though the action sequences give you your money’s worth (so does the 3D, if you desire things thrust into your face), this is only essential for Tolkien completists. The heart, character dynamics and emotional impact from the initial trilogy are gone. Just as George Lucas spent too much time in a Galaxy Far, Far Away with a second cast that didn’t measure up, I hope Jackson eventually finds purpose in reigniting his franchise. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You easily resolve conflicts of interest between head and loins, unlike those squirrelly Geminis or those oversexed Scorpios. You rarely deviate from your prearranged priority status dictating whether brain or crotch gets to call the shots, but I urge you to this week, since your best courses of action will lie opposite your standard procedures. If you’re used to putting rational thought ahead of your lustiest urges, let libido reign supreme for once. Or if you habitually let your sevenyear itch govern, allow your most compelling mental arguments to actually convince you otherwise. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) A little goes a long way this week. Changing the knobs on an old dresser, or adding a stunning accessory to an otherwise mundane outfit can transform its whole look. You’ve been bored for a while; with your appearance, your attitude, your friends, your job, or your house—whatever it is, fix it up this week. Since the tiniest amount of time, effort, or cash can wreak huge changes and massive enhancements, there’s no good reason not to do it. So get off your lazy, overstuffed ass. By the time you sit down, an hour or two later, you’ll be tremendously glad you did. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Big changes are coming. In order to prepare for them, pretend you have a new roommate moving in. Clear out some space in the kitchen cabinets, a shelf in the fridge, and a handful of hangers in the hall closet. Literally do this. The exercise of making room, however slight, for another person, will have several benefits: First of all, you can earn karmic credit by getting rid of some old crap and donating it to goodwill. Secondly, your whole life will wind up more organized and streamlined. Lastly and most importantly, the process of making physical space in your house will help you find an extra room, or at least a niche, in your heart and soul for another person or two to move in, finally. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Because you’re contending with your most compulsive urges (hey, relax; in this department half the zodiac is worse than you), I urge you to force yourself to focus on things that are good for you, like salads, long walks, reading, or gift-giving. Take them (instead of heroin abuse, binging on butter cookies, or one too many jack and cokes) to the extremes you’re prone to lately. While too much of a good thing can be bad, too, it’s still rarely as awful as too much of a bad thing. For example, compulsive generosity may make you broke, but probably really, really happy, too. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Imagine if you still had to trek to an outhouse to shit, even in the dead of winter, in a blizzard. That’s something like the task ahead of you; you may have to brave extremely harsh conditions you couldn’t possibly be used to, in order to accomplish a necessary task. That’s the crappy bad news, but hopefully the good news will help balance it out: Once you’ve bundled yourself in warm layers and hazarded the cruel extremes you’ve been dreading, you’ll find that someone has replaced your homely and modest outhouse with a stunning spa, featuring heated tiles, gold-plated commodes, and bevies of beautiful butt-wipers. In other words, prepare for the worst, but once you’ve endured the nastiest of it, things will probably be a lot better than you expected. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Wish fulfillment is one of your fortes—when it comes to your own. You’ve been manifesting your dreams expertly for ages—and astutely flying under the radar while doing it, obviating jealousy. It’s not that you’re especially selfish, just self-absorbed (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing; if more people took the time to understand themselves and clearly articulate their dreams, more of them would be living those dreams). However, don’t miss making a deposit in the Good Karma Bank when you get a chance to help someone else realize an ambition this week. One hint: The less beneficial fallout you stand to receive, the more good karma you get (in other words, buying your roommate a massive new TV doesn’t exactly count).

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I hate to say it, but your happiness may depend on how well you can kiss ass this week. Consider your options: You can sacrifice a little pride, and pursue the admittedly political path and play nice; this route is short, sweet, and straight up to something you could call success. The other, perhaps more principled and definitely more ego-driven course is long and arduous, and not nearly a sure thing. I won’t choose for you. Each direction has positive and negative facets. All I will say is: If you’re undecided about which of these options is the better one for you, make up your mind now, because the fork in the road is just ahead. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You may have survived grueling family gatherings and/ or similar ordeals last year through the stealthy use of a hip flask full of whiskey, or some other artificial aid. Though that lesser evil helped prevent the arguably greater evil of drama or stress, self-medicating with alcohol or whatever other cheap-ass solution you chose isn’t good for the long-term. Don’t start 2014 with reliance on props, cheat-sheets, or external advantages. You have the resources to resolve these situations on your own. Relying too heavily on outside sources of “strength” will just make you soft and weak. This coming year, resolve to stretch and fortify your emotional resilience by doing the stressful family gathering sober, instead of, say, making yourself ultimately more fragile (while pickling your liver). LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You’re in for a hyper-saturated week. This is what happens when you allow yourself to wake up and stop worrying for a while. Everything gets really colorful and vivid and intense, and you don’t even have to take drugs. Enjoy your Technicolor life, and quit, once and for all, letting anxiety dominate every second of your day. It’s still going to be part of you; but let this week be about staking out some worry-free territory. I’m talking specifically about laying claim to your happiness, and just enjoying it when it hits, rather than worrying about when it will go away. There are many reasons why this is a good idea but the best one is simply this: you deserve to be unreservedly happy. Stop stopping yourself. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Now that you’ve unburdened your little rowboat of all its heaviest and most irksome duties, you’re bobbing happily towards shore. You probably weren’t as close to sinking as you probably felt. I’m still glad you ditched some of the shit that’s dragging you down. Don’t bother with guilt—instead revel in how much better you feel now, as a result. Now that you actually have a little room to take on new passengers or cargo, may I suggest you avoid crap like the dross you dealt with last month, and only take on people and things that will be unequivocally fun?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) There’s plenty of change jingling in your pocket, but your billfold is painfully slim these days. That is, you’re heavily laden with tiny, almost meaningless blessings, but the big ones are coming few and far between. It might be time to tighten your belt and take pleasure in the little things for the next month or so. But there’s no need to plunge into a Great Depression. You may not currently be lucky enough to find a $1,000 bill on the street, but I’m guessing that if you add up all the small change you’ve accumulated, it might equal at least a few hundred. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Hindus, like the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, among others, revere a vast pantheon of gods and goddesses, instead of relying on just one god to satisfy all their religious needs. I’d like you to apply that strategy to your love life. Instead of holding out for The One, some magical person who can fulfill every part of you, invent the possibility that different people are more suited to provide for your various desires. Instead of requiring that one person become your everything, modify that strategy. Let one person become most things, and allow a host of others to fill in the gaps.
