up with the rent — “all in a plan to get property to profit.” Oliveros addressed the court, saying the Artateses took advantage of his family, charging them for things the bank didn’t charge the Artateses for, including property taxes, which had already been paid through escrow. “From the beginning they were out to get us,” Oliveros said. “They are not good people.” Ironically, Artates and his wife were affiliated with organizations that helped people get homes. Perry Artates was a member of the Hawaiian Homes Commission, a board that oversees the Department of Hawaiian Homelands, and helped native Hawaiians with 50 percent or more blood quantum to secure homes through long-term leases on state land. Gov. Neil Abercrombie asked him to resign in August after learning of the conviction from Watchdog.org. “Governor Abercrombie was not aware of this matter until today,” Louise Kim McCoy, his press secretary, said in August. “The governor has received and accepted a letter of resignation from Mr. Artates.” Perry Artates also lost his job as the executive director of the Hawaii Operating Engineers Stabilization Fund, an organization that lobbies for unionbacked legislation related to construction and development and has been a primary advocate for the Honolulu rail project. The organization campaigns and raises money for Democratic candidates who support their agenda. Ronette Artates was a real estate agent and mortgage professional when court records said she orchestrated the scheme, a fact the judge noted when she sentenced her. Ronnette Artates tearfully apologized for her “bad choices,” and said she “learned a great lesson” and lost her “dear friends” as a result of the deal. Her attorney, Clarence McCurdy Virtue, said his client felt “genuine pain and sorrow for her actions,” but he, too, blamed the victims, saying they didn’t have “clean hands.” Both Artateses will be responsible for paying $284,804 in restitution to the victims. The judge did not impose further fines.

The bill, which passed First Reading on Jan. 21, gets to the point in the first paragraphs. “The legislature finds that the consumption of alcohol or certain prescription medications can impair the judgment and physical response of a law enforcement officer,” states the bill. “The purpose of this Act is to prohibit state and county law enforcement officers from consuming alcohol or prescription medications that can mentally or physically impair their judgment while carrying a firearm.” Seriously? You mean right now it’s totally legal for gun-toting cops to get hammered while on duty?! Oh man, I can’t wait to see
NEW BILL DOES WHAT?! With the Hawaii state Legislature’s 2014 session officially off and running, I thought it might be a good idea to glance over some of the proposed laws now churning through our great legal sausage-making machinery. And in no time at all, I found something fascinating. The bill–numbered SB2590–is titled “A bill for an act relating to firearms” and comes to us courtesy of Democratic Senators Will Espero, Brickwood Galuteria

For a political journalist on Maui, there can be no sweeter act in the English language than the placing of the word “candidate” before the name James “Kimo” Apana. Though out of office for more than a decade, former Mayor Apana raise the bar of campaign fundraising in Maui County to heights seldom seen since. From his 1998 election to the Mayor’s Office to his 2002 reelection bid, Apana’s open door policy for land developers brought him more than $700,000. That Apana lost in that year to Alan Arakawa, who back then raised nowhere near that kind of dough, shows that campaign cash–even a mountain of it that rises nearly to Haleakala’s summit–can’t save an unpopular candidate from defeat. Like I said earlier, that was a decade ago. Records held by the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission show that Apana’s old campaign committee Friends of James Kimo Apana went to a zero balance back in 2008, and hasn’t shown any activity since. Since then Apana has made a decent living in real estate, though the political hunger has clearly never left him. He made an abortive attempt to run for the state House seat representing Kahului (9th District) back in 2008, when it looked like then Rep. Bob Nakasone wouldn’t seek reelection, but when Nakasone filed, Apana quickly withdrew. Now Apana is once more making a run at the 9th District seat, according to a Jan. 19 story in The Maui News. “It has always been an honor to serve the people of Maui County and I look forward to representing the people of my district in the Hawaii state Legislature,” Apana said in an email to The Maui News. I can see why Apana would consider 9th District seat a tempting target. Apana had been short-listed to get appointed to
the seat after Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie moved then Rep.-Gil KeithAgaran up to the state Senate during the great 2013 reshuffle following the death of U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye, but the good governor ultimately gave the nod to Justin Woodson, a young realtor who’d never before even run in an election. And though in terms of political experience Woodson is very much junior to Apana, Woodson should also take heart in the knowledge that Apana may ultimately trump him in both name recognition and contributions received, Apana is also living proof that neither will ultimately guarantee victory.
got a call from a source saying that Maui County lifeguard/Save Honolua Coalition President Tamara Paltin had just filed an organizational report with the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission saying that she intended to run for mayor. “I want to run,” she told me by phone a few minutes later when I called to confirm, though didn’t really want to talk on the record about why she was running until after she makes her candidacy official by filing with the state elections office, which can’t take place until Feb. 3 (her campaign website, listed on her CSC form as Tamara4mauinui. com, was not yet active at press time). Paltin, who works for the county’s Ocean Safety division and has spent many years working to save Honolua Bay and Lipoa Point from development, makes for an intriguing candidate–mostly because she has far more name recognition than currently declared candidates Alana Kay and Ori Kopelman. Big names like Mike Victorino and Mike White may already have taken a pass on the 2014 mayor’s race, but that doesn’t mean it’s already over.

how the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO) plays this one.
UPCOMING JOE PONTANILLA FUNDRAISER That’s right, kids–here’s your chance to shake hands with former Maui County Councilman Joe Pontanilla, who would really like to remove the word “former” from that title. He’s taking on incumbent Don Guzman, and it’s looking to be a really bruising battle. To fund that battle, Joe needs money– YOUR money. And he’s not asking for much, either: just $100 gets you into the Maui Lani Golf Course to see Joe, according to a new filing released by the state Campaign Spending Commission. The magic happens on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 7am-1pm. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

News Of The Weird ROBO MEDICINE At least two U.S. medical schools so far are early adopters of Dr. Benjamin Lok’s and Dr. Carla Pugh’s “Robot Butt” for teaching doctors-in-training to properly (and compassionately) administer prostate exams. The robot, bent over a desk to simulate the patient profile, has sensors to alert the students if they dig too deeply or quickly for comfort. Other sensors enable a check on eye contact to evaluate “bedside manner.” (News of the Weird reported a similar innovation in 2012 by Nobuhiro Takahashi, whose model’s “sphincter” has the ability to “clench up” if the probing becomes too distressing.) Neuroscientist James Fallon, fascinated by the brains of serial killers, experienced a seminal career moment in 2005 when he realized that his own brain scan was a deadon match for the typical psychopath’s. Subsequent self-examination revealed him to be, he said, a “pro-social psychopath,” displaying traits similar to a killer’s (aggressiveness, low empathy) and different (“killing” opponents only in games and debate, with little compassion for their haplessness). “I’m kind of an asshole,” he admitted, according to a November report by The Smithsonian, “and I do jerky things that piss people off.” Fallon failed to break bad, he guesses, because he “was loved (growing up), and that protected me.” He figures he has not kicked his pathology but rather strives “to show to everyone and myself that I can pull (this balancing act) off.” [Smithsonianmag.com, Nov. 22, 2013]
WILL WORK FOR BEER A government-subsidized, foundationsupported program for alcoholics in Amsterdam announced a "welfare"/"work" program offering the city’s drunks the equivalent of about $14 a day–and five free cans of beer– for several hours of street-cleaning. Some beneficiaries told London’s The Independent, in a November dispatch, that, of course, they intended to use the cash to buy even more beer. [The Independent, Nov. 20, 2013]
DEMOCRACY BLUES In November, Dave Wilson, a white conservative candidate for the board of the Houston Community College System, pulled off an astonishing victory over the African-American incumbent, by distributing campaign materials that made him–Wilson–appear to be black and thus the favorite of African-Americans. Wilson’s brochures depicting black “supporters” were all, he later said, copied from the Internet. [KHOU-TV, 11-10-2013]
SUCKER’S GAME
RECURRING THEMES
Homeless man James Brady had his New Jersey state benefits cut off in October for “hiding” income. He had found $850 on a sidewalk in April and turned it in; when no one came forward, it was returned to him, though he was unaware that he needed to report it as “income.” And a 16-year-old Fox Chapel, Pa., boy realized at a football game in September that he was inadvertently carrying a pocket knife and conscientiously turned it in to a security guard–which earned him a 10-day school suspension. The school’s “zero tolerance” rule, said the boy’s father, “sends a message [that] you should probably lie.” And Betty Green was fired as clerk at the Speedway gas station in Lexington, Ky., in November when she “just said no” to an armed robber, who smiled and walked out. In 2001, German computer repairman Armin Meiwes captured world attention when he was convicted of killing, and then sauteeing and eating parts of a Berlin engineer of particularly low self-esteem, who had offered himself on a German cannibal-fetish website. In November 2013, police in the German state of Saxony were investigating human body parts found at a bed-and-breakfast run by “Detlef G.,” suggesting the parts were from “Wojciech S.,” who frequented a cannibalfetish website and who had traveled to meet Detlef–and that the parts had been found in an area of the grounds used for “grilling.” The investigation is continuing. He told officers he was only trying to inspire the team (which lost anyway, 35-17). PEOPLE WITH ISSUES A condominium association in Niles, Ill., is debating whether to pursue Norman Kazmierski since he has now moved. As a resident, he was accused of keying cars, egging hallways, disabling the emergency sprinkler system, and leaving several pounds of excrement in buildings in protest of alleged mistreatment. The association said it all started when one resident asked Kazmierski to please park his car between the lines so that parking spaces could be used more efficiently. h brah: I get that you hunt feral pigs. But in the suburbs? At 3am? I know this because your pickup, which was full of weapons, pulled in next to my house. Then a pig started screaming for 30 minutes. No one could sleep through that. Do you trap them before you shoot them after you’ve had a leisurely smoke? Or do you butcher them alive for fun? A gunshot finally stopped the screaming. Then you left the carcass hanging from a tree by the road, where my kindergartner could see it and have nightmares for three straight nights. How about hunting one or two thousand feet higher up, on the ranches and in all that open space? ■

Maui’s Mind-Body-Spirit Guide The fact that we live on an island appears to give us the upper hand in health and fitness. In fact, a 2013 American Health Rankings report named Hawaii as the healthiest state in the union. But that doesn’t mean it’s all perfect in paradise; even under the sunshine, our bodies can’t escape our biggest weakness–mortality. As Maui visitors and residents look for long life and happiness, we at MauiTime have put together a guide to what’s happening in health and wellness on the Valley Isle. Here’s our annual Mind Body Spirit Issue, full of great information about how to stay healthy and happy that we hope you’ll find useful.

Blowing Up The Bliss Bubble Maui’s transformational festivals Whether the transformational festival was reborn from the need for artists to express themselves, musicians looking for a new way to perform or simply the passions of body and movement enthusiasts, it doesn’t really matter. They’ve evolved into their own. Perhaps their roots lie in hippie festivals of the 1970s or the underground rave festivals of a decade ago. But the well-established global circuit of postmodern transformational festivals now translates into more than 90 interactive art, music, body movement, spiritual, and musical exchanges over the course of a year. In the next week, Maui’s seventh annual Mystic Island Festival will kick off as one of their strongest years with five days of visionary art, yoga camps, workshops for body, mind and soul, and music from sunrise to moonrise. Maui has carved out its own niche as a destination for transformational festivals, where attendees are just as much the content as are the performers, speakers and artists. Mystic Island is one, Maui’s own Source Festival is another. The islands of Hawaii and Kauai are also growing festival destinations. The idea is simple: create your own
we learn at the events via workshops, yoga, dietary and other inspired lifestyle practices are things we continue to integrate into our lives.” Lindsey spends at least three months out of the year working on the Mystic Island Festival here on Maui, and produces and consults on many other festivals around the Mainland. This year, he’s bringing Jeet-Kei Leung to the speakers panel on Saturday. Leung has presented at TedXVancouver with insight on festival culture. “Mystic Island Festival will be my first time to Maui but based on what others have shared with me, it seems like a place where the power of the earth is very present and people are engaged with this nurturing power on a daily basis,” says Leung. “Since restoring that honoring connection to earth is an essential component of the transformational festival, I expect Maui may facilitate an extra powerful experience.” The Mystic Island Festival starts on Thursday at Camp Maluhia, where Leung will be joined by sacred artists Alex and Allyson Grey, author Daniel Pinchbeck and Rev. Kedar of the Temple of Peace, among others.

Zero garbage, fully composted, nature-based, organic sustenance, alternative healing, art-centralized, dance-driven, ritual blessings–these are just some of the community concepts explored in the festivals that are basically ecological and spiritual conferences sustained with soul food, electronic music and art. “I think the experience is different for everyone, but I think it’s important to understand that the culture and community that we experience at the festival goes far beyond our interactions at the festival,” says Phil Lindsey, Mystic Island Festival’s producer. “Those of us participating in the culture are often in touch with each other and sharing our selves, our values, uplifting and inspiring things all the time. Our inspiration and motivation to impact culture is something we bring to our communities in a variety of ways in our daily lives, in our communication practices. Many things

The event will feature healthy foods, ecstatic dance and world dance, men’s and women’s empowerment, healing arts, community building, communication skills and ceremonial & ritual techniques. Attendees will range from those willing to travel to Maui for destination transformation, as well as its own following of festival co-creators. You should bring your own water bottles, canteens, and bliss kit with plate, fork and spoon, as well as rain gear, just in case. “At Mystic Island, we will be making a variety of living foods made from the freshest local ingredients, like kale chips, acai bowls and superfood salads,” says Kathryn Dahm, of Choice Health Bar Maui. “The food at festivals is the fuel to charge up the festival goers for long days of workshops, music, sunshine and dancing. Often the decision to go get food is an event of its own, and a group of festival-goers will stumble upon a place that blows them away and is a nourishing and refreshing experience. Although even the largest festivals on Maui seem small compared to the average

Mainland gatherings, more than anywhere Maui’s aloha spirit and natural wonders make the whole island and its residents [into] one big year round transformational experience. Many people come here to heal, or be free from other people’s paradigms of success or happiness. The actual festivals on Maui may only play a small part of the worldwide circuit but Maui is cherished as emblematic of festival ideals, almost a place where that ‘bliss bubble’ is more permeable and all-inclusive.” You can buy passes that include camping overnight, and kama‘aina pricing is available, too. There will be music from over a dozen entertainers including Random Rab, David Starfire, Chris Berry, Diane Patterson, Leah song (Rising Appalachia), the Human Experience, Dustin Thomas (of Nahko Bear and Medicine for the People), Shimshai, Jaya Lakshmi and Ananda. Camp Maluhia will be decked out with electronica all night in the long house, and there will also be a second stage–called the
Mystic Gazebo–and a circus tent area with other speakers and performances. “Maui is important in the circuit to me because it’s a rare place in which some of the more dense energies of the mainland are dissipated and people can often more easily feel open and expressive to let their light shine a little brighter,” says Lindsey. “The Maui Mystic Island Festival, to me, is where we get to showcase and experience the ultimate of our transformational culture. It’s more of a leadership retreat and celebration. Maui offers a more concentrated yet also just relaxed island-style experience where we can integrate our higher aspirations of the kind of healthier more vibrant lifestyles we want to live. Without some of the mainland stress it just seems as though we can more easily drop in and let go.” Go to mysticislandfestival.com for more info and tickets. Try a New Gadget or Class I definitely think technology will play a big part in this year’s fitness trends. Everyone loves a cool new gadget, app or gizmo. I also think small group classes will make a comeback this year. They have the benefits of personalized attention without the cost. Start small—smaller than you think. If you think you can’t work out, try a five-minute workout. Everyone can handle five minutes. When you think you can’t do it, try to keep it up for 10 more seconds. You can do anything for 10 seconds.
Step 1: Put it on your calendar; schedule it into your day literally. Step 2: Get a friend or partner to workout with. Step 3: Visualize it! Take five minutes every night as you go to bed to imagine yourself exercising, see and feel yourself happy and healthy as you are doing it. Step 4: Exercise in the morning if possible. Step 5: Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day or two either, just get back into it the next day you can. If you start to miss too many days, you may have stopped your visualizations. Go back to Step 3. Walk Before You Run Start slowly. Figure out what you like to do that is active. If you love the ocean, make a commitment to swim for 10 minutes every other day. If you like being with other people for motivation, then sign up for a few classes and see which ones you enjoy once or twice a week. Walk, walk, walk. Get a pedometer and track how many steps you walk each day. Strive to walk 10,000 steps a day for health. Be patient with yourself. Let go of expectation, judgments and comparisons about your body.

Do Something Different Plateaus are the worst! Nothing destroys motivation quite like the stagnation of a plateau. The easiest way to jump-start the body is to change it up. When someone comes to me with a plateau problem, I analyze my client’s current activities and diet, and see where I can shake things up a bit. It’s all about confusing the body and tricking it into working more efficiently. Anything that makes me feel like I’m not working out is the perfect workout. That’s why I love pole dancing so much—it’s hard to skip a workout you love! But don’t beat yourself up, give yourself a break. It’s ok to take a day off. Try to follow an 80/20 rule–80 percent of the time you’re awesome, 20 percent of the time you do what you want.

JULIE CORRINE AUDINO The Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas I’m a personal trainer for guests as well as a yoga Instructor and CardioCore (mix of standing Pilates and cardio) instructor. I find variety is key with body movements, similar to learning languages. Once you learn a few, the learning curve increases exponentially. Through the resort’s Spa Helani, I’m able to implement this belief with a variety of classes offered daily, both for guests and nonhotel guests, including local residents. Westinkaanapali.com Make Resolutions! Be bold! For 2014, I plan to speak my voice and take more risks in the direction of my dreams. For me, that means creating a workbook to go with my book Finding Your Piece, posting workout videos and hosting my first retreat called Living the Principles. These resolutions will help me reach more people, do what I love and spend more time enjoying Maui. What I’ve found is that when I step into the level of my purpose, I’m automatically inspired to eat well, exercise well, sleep well, etc. Getting your sleep is important I have helped clients break plateaus by recommending seven to nine hours of sleep, which is actually where you lose weight. The body releases weight at night when you rest. By doing the right things, such as drinking lots of water, exercising and eating well, I’ve seen clients lose one to two pounds just by getting the proper amount of sleep. Now, when I am working with a cardio junkie, marathoner or aerobic champion, I begin to incorporate strength and flexibility. That balance
makes all the difference in the world and their body changes quickly. Another common way to break a plateau is to simply look at their nutrition. There are so many specifics with nutrition that can completely change a person’s body and health. Always remember that AbsAre-Made-In-The-Kitchen.
MAYA RIVERS Personal Trainer I was born and bred with rhythm in my blood and a bounce in my step. As a kid growing up here on Maui, my parents had me involved in many fun dance classes and outdoor physical activities. It was only a natural step forward to pursue a career in inspiring others to move their bodies. Maya@mayarivers.com Look for These Fitness Trends this year: The newest trends are fitness vacations and fusion classes. I predict lower impact cardio equipment will become more mainstream this year. Assisted stretching and foam roller workouts will be offered as classes. Try small group training and private fitness one-on-one sessions for getting best results from your workout. Yoga will be taken off the mat, giving you opportunity to try an anti-gravity fitness like aerial yoga. Create E-motion The perfect client is anyone who is ready and willing to make their health and wellness a priority. It’s so exciting and rewarding to see changes taking place once the body is in motion in all aspect of a client’s life. Motion creates emotion. I’ve been lucky enough to see so many of my clients lives change in huge and incredible ways through the years spent working together. ■

Mother Nature Meets The Federal Government Exploring how the Affordable Care Act affects Naturopathic Doctors Most people probably don’t realize that the federal Affordable Healthcare Act (HR3590) includes provisions preventing discrimination of alternative medicine. This could have a big affect on the Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) on Maui. “That will be the largest single event to impact our profession in years,” says Lorilee Schoenbeck–a board member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP)–in an article published by Bastyr University. “It’s a change our nation needs. Our health care system needs prevention-oriented, low-cost primary care that’s effective for chronic illness. There’s no profession that does that better than us.” Hawaii is one of the 16 states that already regulates naturopathic medicine. Many NDs in the state are a part of the professional association representing licensed practitioners, the Hawaii Society of Naturopathic Physicians (HSNP). Hawaii also licenses massage therapists, acupuncturists and chiropractors in the state, all of whom could benefit from the non-discrimination clause in the new health insurance law. But at this point, there are no guarantees. “Section 2706 of the Affordable Care Act is an inclusion law, and essentially states that insurance companies have to cover complementary and alternative care (CAM) if the practitioner is a licensed healthcare provider in their state,” says Marsha Lowery, a Maui ND and member of the HSNP. “Unfortunately this has been left up to interpretation by insurance companies and there have been many last minute changes to the ACA. Currently it only affects newly purchased plans that are in compliance with the ACA. It excludes Medicare, Medicaid (QUEST) and grandfathered plans.” A review of the Hawaii plans available shows HMAA and HMSA are offering plans with ND coverage in some capacity. The state-offered Quest program is not covering NDs or their treatments. Kaiser has some plans that cover limited acupuncture and massage with referrals from their general practitioners. American Specialty Health has additional coverages you can buy to layer over Kaiser and HMSA that cover NDs. Some plans utilize an “in network” list of practitioners you choose from, others are more open. There are tons of variation in the system as to what’s covered, when and for how much. Part of the problem may be consumer education. I was lost when trying to put my finger on exactly what the term “naturopathic medicine” actually means. “Our scope is very broad, and individual practitioners may focus on a particular population of patients, or specialize in a specific treatment modality,” says Lowery. “An ND in Hawaii has the ability to order labs and imaging. We also may prescribe vitamins, supplements, herbs, hormones, and also pharmaceuticals when necessary. Treatment modalities that are used in office may include IV therapy, physical therapy, lasers, minor surgery, bodywork, counseling and adjustments to joints.”
18 JANUARY 23, 2014
Lowery says the new law could cover lab fees and prescribed medicines, too. Dr. Nathan Ehrlic of Ola Ha Holistic Health Clinic is also a licensed ND and an HSNP member since 1989. He says he takes a variety of private health insurance plans, motor vehicle insurance and workman’s compensation insurance as well. He treats patients for a wide range of issues, but says he specializes on regenerative medicine and sports medicine at his general practice. “I see many patients with musculoskeletal problems of the spine and extremities,” says Ehrlic. “I utilize various types of manual therapies combined with spinal re-alignments, regenerative injection therapies, including prolotherapy such as autologous platelet and mesenchymal stem cell treatments, and peripheral regenerative nerve therapy (neural prolotherapy). I work with weight loss, detoxification, immunoptimization, diet planning, bio-identical hormone therapy. I primarily utilize botanical and nutritional therapy.”
cians believe that inherent in the patient is the ability for the body to heal itself and that, in fact, what is often thought of by conventional medicine as disease is often the expression of this principle through homeostatic processes aimed at correcting imbalances in the host physiology,” says Erhlich. “Finding and treating the true cause of pathology is then valued more than simply treating symptoms. Naturopathic physicians emphasize prevention and health optimization. We feel the best medicine is in cultivation of a healthy lifestyle.” Naturopathic doctors are just one aspect of complementary and alternative care (CAM). There are also State of Hawaiilicensed acupuncturists, massage therapists and chiropractors that would fall under the anti-discrimination law. That leaves many other practitioners in a gray area that do not have a licensing board in the State’s Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Vocational Licensing Division.

Lowery says one of the most obvious differences between an ND and an MD is the length of time an ND will spend with a patient. A majority of her patients are women with changes in mood, hormonal issues, digestion complaints, pain and inflammation, weight gain or low energy levels. She also has pediatric patients for acute care and well-child visits. “My initial visit with a patient is typically about an hour,” Lowery says of her practice in the Grace Health Center in Makawao. “We cover a lot during that visit, and it’s what allows me to treat the whole person and to really address the underlying cause of their problem.” Erhlich says his patients are a mix of visitors and residents, old and young. The philosophy of naturopathic medicine and holistic arts made an impression as a premed student of a conservative medical institution. He says for him the undergrad med school work foundation of chemistry and biology fused seamlessly into the botanical and psychology training at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland. “The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae): this is one of the main principles of naturopathic medicine where we as physi-
Kabba Anand, the former president of the Hawaii Acupuncture Association and the only acupuncture practitioner on the Allied Medical Staff at Maui Memorial Medical Center, says the new law doesn’t affect his practice. He only accepts workers’ compensation and no-fault insurance at this time. He helps visitors and residents with symptoms associated with exposure to vog, including headache, cough, sore throat, itchy eyes, sneezing, fatigue and asthmatic symptoms. He’s also behind a proprietary blend of Chinese herbs he sells as “Vog Defense” for the past 16 years. “According to ‘traditional’ Chinese medicine our bodies are comprised of yin and yang, which must be in balance for optimum health,” says Anand. “Qi circulates through specific channels, and can be stimulated through specific sites or points, with very fine sterile needles, in order to balance yin and yang, thus maintaining and improving health, healing and function.” As for Reiki Master Jason Coughlin, he says he doesn’t take insurance. But Reiki isn’t a practice licensed in the state, which means it not included in the new law. An ancient Tibetan healing practice, Reiki soothes the
body’s energy center with the endocrine system, also known as the chakras. He says a session lasts around an hour. “There’s the ‘laying of hands direct in person Reiki’ but Reiki can also be sent ‘remotely,’” says Coughlin. “The universe is one big ball of energy. Everything, every molecule is touching each other. All cells are vibrating like music. Due to stress, life choices, injuries, diet etc. our energy centers can become blocked and we don’t vibrate at the right frequency we could be. We are like tuning forks. Reiki helps a person re-attain their optimum energy ‘music.’” For Dr. Jim Roth, who runs Roth Chiropractic, the title of doctor is not taken lightly, and he says there are responsibilities that go along with his licensing process from the state. Roth feels Obama Care will allow more access to care, and his practice accepts all forms of insurance. “We are given the responsibility and honor to diagnose conditions and are held by state law to follow the correct protocol,” says Dr. Roth. “This is what separates chiropractors from other health providers including massage therapists and acupuncturists. Results generate word-of-mouth referrals. Additionally, I ‘partner’ with the patient, allowing them to choose their best options for care. We define their goal. If it’s pain relief, we first determine if we’re the appropriate choice. If we’re not (trained to differential diagnosis), we refer to the proper health provider. If I can help, we strive to reach their goal ASAP. The key to this is a good, thorough initial exam and X-rays if necessary. Often people experience pain and ‘get a massage’ when perhaps the pain was actually a warning sign of something far more serious. This is where the general public is confused.” This year may see a jump in naturopathic medicine, but policy watchers say it could go either way at this point. Maui practitioners are varied, confused and on the fence as to whether it will affect their business. At the national level, the naturopathic industry feels confident it’s made strides with the law. “Insurers may not discriminate, but they certainly can dictate the number of NDs who they empanel and the scope of care they provide,” says Karen E Howard, Executive Director of the AANP, on that organization’s website. “Opportunities may continue to be tied to the tightly defined provisions for Medicare and Medicaid. Regulations could be drafted by federal employees with little or no knowledge of naturopathic medicine. Boards and Commissions could be populated by those with strong political ties vs. strong consumer ties. And yet–new doors are open and the real work of transforming our healthcare system can start! Funding bills, regulatory processes, appointments, and changes to insurance laws offer up the opportunity to influence. And influence we will.” For more information on the Hawaii Society of Naturopathic Physicians (HSNP) go to hawaiind.org. For the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) go to naturopathic.org. ■

You’ve probably heard the term “take a deep breath” many times, often during a time when you’re losing your mind, super-frustrated or just need to calm down. Yoga practice also calls upon conscious breathing skills, as do lots of other fitness training, martial arts and anger management. How does taking a breath affect the body? You breathe in and out all day without giving it any thought–so why should we pay attention to the way we suck in oxygen all day? Your body processes oxygen in a fantastic choreography of brain and muscle mechanics, mixed with a bit of blood chemistry, and then spits out carbon dioxide. The act alone is amazing, but of all the auto mechanics of our body we can interrupt the cruise control of breath with a split second thought. We can hold our breath, shorten it, push it out, breath shallow or deep. Focusing on the breath gives the mind an edge. It’s an edge that yoga practitioners say can make all the difference in life. “The breath is the spark that enlivens us–without it, our cells start to die,” says Danielle Ryan of Samana Wellness. “Yet, breath is something that we can so easily
positively affect immune function, hypertension, asthma, autonomic nervous system imbalances and psychological or stress-related disorders. “Breath control is called pranayama, which translates to controlling or directing the life force (prana) within our bodies,” says Rachel Gonzales, owner and Yoga instructor at Body Alive Yoga. “Sometimes we just watch the breath as is and observe its flow and qualities. And other times we control it. Of course, there will be times when we will just be breathing without thinking about it, but it’s good for us to periodically to check in on it throughout the day. As soon as we begin breathing consciously, it activates our parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for calming us down, stimulating digestion and relaxing our bodies.” Pranayamic yoga has several different methods for practicing acute awareness from diaphragmic breathing, retention breaths to agniprasana–the breath of fire. Mastery of the breath is preparation for meditation, another yogic practice that has benefits for the brain and body. “In our stressful world, where we’re bombarded with information, noise and
“We are each built with a mindfulness bell and reset button, our breath. The more a person gets tuned in with his or her breath, the calmer the mind becomes.” take for granted because it happens automatically without our awareness. When we do place attention on our breath, the quality of it changes significantly. Most people breathe shallowly in daily life, and can benefit greatly from drawing breath deeper and more fully into the lower parts of their lungs. Deep conscious breaths decrease stress, lower blood pressure, and help us become more solution-oriented in times of challenge. In yoga, focusing on the breath becomes a meditative part of the practice that gives us clues about how we are responding to a pose, and whether or not our minds have drifted away from the practice to what we’re going to eat or do afterwards. Maintaining connection to the breath in yoga practice keeps us conscious and that really is what yoga is about.” Brain research shows that the yogis know what they’re talking about. Pranayama is the yoga of breath, and there are many different practices associated with it. Len Kravitz, a Ph.D professor in Exercise Science at the University of New Mexico and author of Anybody’s Guide to Total Fitness, writes that Pranayama breathing has been shown to

‘doing,’ we absolutely need a tool to calm the nervous system and connect to our divine and natural resources,” says Christy Abelov, owner and instructor at Island Spirit Yoga. “It helps us feel more and think less. Meditation helps us move into stillness and cultivate tranquility. There are many forms of meditation… from silent to walking.” The benefits of meditation run the gamut from increased productivity, better memory, reduced anxiety to more apathy. Most yoga practice incorporates a bit of breathing technique and meditation, whether it be beginner or advanced. “Asana (yoga postures) is mediation on the body and Pranayama (breathing practice) is meditation on the breath,” says Nadia Toraman of Maui Yoga Shala.”Teaching students to tune into the subtleties of the breath teaches them how to move with awareness into the subtleties of the asana and subtle energetic layers of their being.” On Jan. 6, JAMA Internal Medicine Journal published a study on meditation, finding the biggest benefits in reduced depression and anxiety with just 30 minutes of practice daily. Most yoga instructors say it’s easy to practice at home, with just a few quiet min-

utes in the morning to focus on your breath or take a moment to meditate. Another tool to meditation and breath could be your mobile device. The iPhone app called Headspace says you just need 10 minutes a day to practice, and takes you through a series of videos, visualizations and leads you through meditation with a British accent. “Yoga and meditation are all about our connection to the moment,” says Ryan. “We are each built with a mindfulness bell and reset button, our breath. The more a person gets tuned in with his or her breath, the calmer the mind becomes. In this sense, breathing practices prepare the mind for the focus and concentration required in mediation. Inherent in each breath is receiving and letting go, merging with the universe in both directions. With each breath, we have the opportunity to turn towards sattva (consciousness, harmony, balance, clarity) or toward tamas (inertia, unconsciousness, dullness or habit). In meditation, when we realize that the mind has wandered (which it does again and again), we have the opportunity to come back to our practice as soon as we realize we’ve strayed. In every moment we always have a choice, sometimes it’s only about the quality of our breath. In that, we have the opportunity with every inhalation and exhalation to recognize that each moment is sacred, and that is the true meaning of yoga.”
TRY THIS AT HOME: Find a quiet space and make yourself comfortable either sitting or lying down. Begin to breathe in, notice what happens in your body as you inhale and slowly breathe
out and feel what happens as you exhale. Continue like this noticing how the inhale feels different than the exhale. You might find it helpful to repeat inhalation as you breathe in and exhalation as you breathe out to keep your mind focused. -Rachel Gonzales, Body Alive Yoga Take a few minutes of deep breaths first thing in the morning, at night before bed and anytime I feel stressed or overwhelmed. Pointers: Make sure that inhales expand your chest and torso like you’re blowing up a balloon, and exhales are complete with the chest and belly falling toward the spine like a deflating balloon. Keep it simple and don’t push the mind or the body for best results. -Danielle Ryan, Samana Wellness Never ever feel strain in your practice, build on it slowly, adding on a bit each week so as to train the heart and lungs slowly and carefully. Its best done on an empty stomach at the same time each day. If you experience dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, its time to stop. -Nadia Toroman, Maui Yoga Shala A simple practice is to lie on your back with one palm placed on the center of the chest and the other on the abdomen. Breathe from the bottom hand and let it move upward and expand in every direction. Release the breath from the upper down to the lower hand. The inhale and exhale should be equal in length, smooth and easy. Take 10 minutes a day to lie or sit and practice deepening each breath, inhale and exhale. -Christi Abelov, Island Spirit Yoga ■

Food Is Medicine The promise, and challenge, of eating healthy
T
The American food industry has left us fat, sick and pissed off. Our nation’s top health issues–obesity, heart disease and organ failures–can be linked to many consumption issues, and the pharmaceutical solutions posed by Western medicine hardly seem healthy either. There’s a pill or a poke to cure just about everything, but much of that is sullied by profit-driven solutions marketed over the television. Access to healthy food seems like a no-brainer, but our super stores are stocked with so much we shouldn’t eat, like hydrogenated fats in packaged foods, pesticide-laden produce and confusing labels that aren’t easily analyzed. “Our culture is set up around profitability,” says Danielle Ryan of Samana Wellness. Her Maui-based wellness business creates individual and group cleanses, nutritional consulting and overall wellness plans. “Sickness is far more profitable than health. Three of the top fatal diseases in the U.S.–heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease–all have significant known dietary relationships. But changing what we eat is really difficult when we’ve been spoiled to choose foods and beverages based on flavor, texture, convenience and the allure of advertising. Convenience foods are chemically engineered to be addictive and their ease and availability support our fast-paced lifestyles, which do not value taking time to create and enjoy fresh homemade meals on a daily basis. It’s so much easier just to take a pill for the problem and keep living life as usual.” Craig King, the man behind Maui’s locally sourced fresh Glow Juice products, says the food system leaves much to be desired. “Many food establishments are paying some attention to bringing in more ‘healthy choices,’” says King. “The problem is that most foodservice is build upon a business model which didn’t start out with healthy clean food as a priority and dedication. In my consulting work transforming institutional food systems towards healthier pastures, I discovered that typically the food budget per day for an elder in assisted living is $7.50 per day for all food and beverage. Because most food systems are built with a focus on profit, the quality of the food is almost always compromised. Unfortunately, we all pay in a different column.” King says food is made to be our health care. But can we afford it? “Access to super fresh, local, healthy food is unfortunately far more expensive than foods that are shipped from far away and devoid of their vital nutrients,” says Kathryn Dahm of Choice Health Bar in Lahaina, where they serve fresh local raw produce and juices daily. “It blows me away how the most pure, untouched foods like a local avocado or mango can be $5 a piece at a grocery store while a king size candy bar is fifty cents. Somehow, the big box stores have found ways to make the unhealthiest and least earth-friendly products
22 JANUARY 23, 2014
the cheapest, because they are made with synthetic materials in huge factories.” On Maui, our markets have a challenge when it’s more expensive to buy locally farmed organic produce versus something cheaper if it’s shipped in. Store managers have also remarked that people don’t understand when Maui doesn’t produce items that the Mainland grows year-round like apples and oranges. We’ve been brainwashed and retrained by industrial agriculture–nothing is seasonal anymore. Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Maui Nutritionist Jessica Quinn of Be Nutritious points to this statement as part of her belief that healthy eating benefits the body. She says she updates it with the addition of a few words: organic, high alkaline, high vibrancy, superfoods and superior herbs. “I do know of a few restaurants on this island that do serve health conscious food options, yet only a few,” says Quinn. “I can only assume that the other restaurants do not do the same because the owners or creators of the menu have not yet integrated health conscious foods into their own personal diet, therefore they are not in a position to offer that to the general public. I believe the general public’s demand for health conscious food is not yet mainstream due to the notion that the big agriculture and big pharmaceutical companies are working together to promote low vibrational food choices that cause the breakdown of human health therefore furthering the reliance on pharmaceutical medications. They have distorted Hippocrates’ model with their own strategic plan involving greed, fear, power, control and money.” Ryan says the key to getting stores to provide better healthier food is voting with our dollars. The answer is simple: ask for something new. “As consumers demands change, our food supply changes,” says Ryan. “Again it comes back to profitability. Every time we make a purchase, we are voting with our dollars for more of that same thing to be produced. As more people start to wake up and realize that as a whole our readily available food choices are substandard and that our eating habits are killing us, and have the courage and inspiration to make different purchases, then what is supplied as a whole will change. We really have much more power in this process than most people realize. What are you voting for with your weekly purchases more of the same or change?” Monica Mikolajczyk of r.i.p.e. juice Maui makes fresh raw juice for clients with ailments like moderate to severe arthritis, previous sports injuries, diabetes, obesity, melanoma, and I.B.S.. She believes fully in the powers of raw juice cleansing to treat them. “Raw juice is so powerful because everything it contains is immediately absorbed,” says Mikolajczk. “This means your body is flooded with essential vitamins, minerals, live enzymes and key antioxidants. Juice cleansing is an important part of our well being. The more food we consume, the more
energy we use to digest the food, leaving us little to no energy to flush toxins, or heal what ails us. Cleansing involves even more than just what we are, or are not, ingesting. It allows impurities to dissolve, which ultimately increases our self-knowledge and awareness. We feel more awake and connected with everything, and everyone around us. It is a physical, mental, and spiritual experience, and there is nothing better to couple this with than yoga. This can only add and heighten the entire experience.” Ryan advises cleansing as a strategy to give your digestive track a timeout. She says it can give your body a chance to purify and rid itself of toxins that rest in the joints and fat cells. But she warns the transition in and out of a cleanse and what you eat after is critical. If you’re on medication or have existing conditions, you should check on those first. “Cleansing gives your body a break from the work of digesting normal meals, so that the liver, colon and other organs who participate in the digestive process can spend their energy clearing out what has accumulated in the body,” says Ryan. “Think about email: if our inbox is always filling up, what’s down at the bottom has less chance of ever getting dealt with and is perpetually postponed. Our bodies do the same thing. Without taking an intentional time out from eating though, that digestive tract break never comes.” King describes his cleanse as a life-changer. According to him, the profound effects of a cleanse are felt because of the lack of any other foods. The lack of fiber contributes to giving your liver a break from producing bile and restore itself during its rest. “Drinking the garden is a wonderful way to delivery dense nutrients to the system,” says King. “Juice is so readily bio-available. Because it doesn’t need to be digested, it immediately impacts the brain and nervous system. You can literally feel the increase in energy and well being right away. Having been a juice chef for 23 years, you could say I have a special relationship with the process. Equipment certainly plays a role in creating a premium
product. I work on a hydraulic cold press which gently applies 18,000 lbs of pressure to gently press the cell wall to release the greatest concentration of nutrients–unlike most juice machines, which spin and cut and incorporate lots of oxygen and heat to the process. Through our method we have a product that is very stable with little or no degradation for 48 hours under refrigeration.” Dahm makes fresh juice, organic and raw foods daily with her partner Emily Kunz and their team at Choice Health Bar, but they are avid shoppers of produce island-wide. She knows the challenges first-hand of procuring and serving fresh veggies and fruits but feels that our community could probably use some creative help with ideas on how to utilize these ingredients too to assist a change in the current paradigm. “Farmers markets and health food stores are doing the best they can to provide a fair price to make that kind of food appealing to the people,” says Dahm. “Many people don’t realize how easy it is to make fresh, healthy food that tastes really good. Especially here in Hawaii, we’re so lucky to have the most primo selection of island produce from which to fashion delicious meals. Maybe what people need is more inspiration and ideas on how to use the fresh ingredients right under their nose, as well as a change in the food economy where healthy living and eating is a genuine possibility for everyone.”

he key factor to CIA analyst Jack Ryan’s appeal is his vulnerability, fear and inexperience. Whether played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and now, Chris Pine, the character always rises to the occasion but usually with hesitation that comes from being a wounded war veteran and a self described “analyst without field experience.” Ryan is depicted here as a CIA recruit but, on the clock or not, has always been a sort of stuffed shirt Every Man, whose patriotism and clear sense of wrong and right motivates him to accomplish his mission. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan adventure novels have been previously adapted into the movies The Hunt for Red October, with a terrific breakout turn by Baldwin as the ambitious but earnestly in-over-his-head Ryan. Ford took over the role in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger; his performance was as
solid as the films themselves, though casting the former Indiana Jones as Ryan made the character’s heroics and triumph over adversity seem like a given. Affleck’s take on Ryan in The Sum of All Fears wasn’t bad, though the film itself was stronger than his portrayal. Pine is already known worldwide as the star of J.J. Abram’s Star Trek movies. The actor could have merely coasted on audience goodwill and familiarity with his icon as a movie hero. The nicest surprise in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is how Pine shows us Ryan, not as a super hero wrapped in an American flag, but a sweet, scared young man whose courage comes from the terror that no one else will take action. Pine’s take on the role is as good as Baldwin’s, whose Red October remains the standard for Clancy films. We first meet Ryan as a student, shaken by 9/11, then as a wounded war veteran. This being a prequel/reboot/origin story for the character, we’re also introduced to Mrs. Ryan, played by a luminously appealing Keira Knightley, who has more to do with this role than Anne Archer ever did. After being recruited for a top secret mission by a CIA agent (played by Kevin Costner), Ryan is off to Russia. Initially on an

investigative assignment, Ryan finds that his life and country are in grave danger. Kenneth Branagh directs and co-stars as the film’s key villain, a wealthy, ailing mad man named Cherevin. Branagh’s performance is pitch perfect but I hoped for more of the directorial flamboyancy that mark his best films. Likewise, composer Patrick Doyle, whose Needful Things soundtrack is one of the great undiscovered film scores, creates music that is suitable without being memorable. I enjoyed seeing Mikhail Baryshnikov, scary in an unbilled role as Cherevin’s superior. Costner is suitably intense as Ryan’s mentor, though I missed seeing James Earl Jones as Ryan’s eventual boss. Cherevin’s lair has the same dazzling, improbably glossy sheen as Branagh’s adaption of Sleuth, or the layout of any Apple store. Branagh seems to have studied Paul
Greengrass’ Jason Bourne thrillers, as a few sequences are muted of their excitement, due to a camera that refuses to hold still. The best scenes are at the mid-point, with a surprising, brutal fight scene that occurs in a bathroom and the initial Ryan/Cherevin encounter is deliciously written and acted. There’s also a suspenseful set piece involving the downloading of a computer file that is simply a larger scale version of the same scene from Clear and Present Danger. While the screenplay is involving, it lacks the dense plotting and rich techno-speak from Clancy’s novels. Clancy, who died last year, famously disliked the movies made from his novels and would have hated the many contrived coincidences found here. While not a direct hit like Red October, Pine’s appealing turn and some gripping scenes make Shadow Recruit worthy of the Clancy film cannon. ■

BENEFIT NIGHT FOR EVAN ADAMS- Evan was diagnosed with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy in August 2011. He has rapid muscle loss in his lower legs, moving into his upper legs and is constantly in pain. Slowly he is becoming less and less mobile, having to give up his favorite activity, surfing, in the last year. He and his family currently live on Maui, but he’s unable to get the medical support he needs here. They will be moving to the Mainland soon so that Evan can join a clinic and get proper treatment. A percentage of all pizza sales and silent auction proceeds will go to Evan and his family. To donate, please email sarah@risingsunsolar.com. Flatbread Company, (89 Hana Hwy., Paia); 808-579-8989

Sign Language AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
My friends once spent the better part of a year trying to get their landlord to repair a hole in the wall behind their bathtub. When he finally did, they were thrilled at the new wholeness of their apartment—until they realized, from the pathetic sound of her muted meows, that he’d sealed their cat inside the wall. The landlord, thankfully, promptly returned to release the poor curious feline, who reminds me of you. Your tentative explorations into your own life’s darkest places might get much deeper, scarier, and more real than you planned on—and facilitation of your safe return from those shamanic head trips could come from an unlikely source—possibly even your landlord. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
A geographic solution to your problems could help a lot. It’s not always the best bet, but putting even a few hundred miles between you and your crises can make them seem much less urgent, overwhelming, and impossible to cope with. What seemed like an eruptive volcano when you were pressed up against it might more closely resemble a buzzing fly as you flee down the road. Let distance shrink your difficulties. Get far enough away so you can swat this particular predicament and make it another bygone smear on your windshield. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Back in 1982, in Alliance, Nebraska, someone had the brilliant idea of reconstructing Stonehenge, entirely out of automobiles, aptly dubbed “Carhenge.” This resurrection of prehistoric mysteries reminds me of your latest evolution, a sort of a dusting off and animation of mummified aspects of your personality that you entombed years ago. Now you’re surprised to find them so well preserved and walking around. Cheer up, sarcophagus breath; you’ve just come around another loop of the track. Let Carhenge inspire you: Turn your past selves upside down and see how they catch the sun. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Don’t sell yourself. Sometimes, pushing your flavor like a bad drug seems like a necessary evil. This week, however, it’s just tacky. Some friends of mine have an annual “unmanned yard sale.” They just leave out all the stuff they’d rather live without, along with a sign: “Give what you want.” Emulate their confident technique. You don’t need salesmanship to attract interest; you’re just that hot. Stop trying so hard. If you have enough patience and forbearance, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much of you people want, and how much they’re willing to pay for it. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Multiple-personality-disorder is usually more of a handicap to effective living, but I like to imagine it as a boon. You’re possessed of more than one distinctive inner self, so I hope you can understand my vision. Imagine one personality was a mathematical genius, another a gifted orator, and yet another a sublime Casanova—and each would come to the fore when his talents would be most useful. Unfortunately, in your experience, it doesn’t often work that way. Your inner seductress ends up having to cope with balancing the checkbook, while your accountant works her pathetic wiles on a new love interest. This week, thankfully, you’re free of that kind of mismatch. Each facet of your personality is likely to manifest exactly when you most need it. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Get bitten by a radioactive super-spider, if you possibly can. Granted, having Spidey’s paranormal abilities would be useful in most circumstances, but especially this week. You might feel merely mortal when confronting the walls set in front of you, trying to predict the dangers about to beset you, and watching the villains who oppose you flee unhindered. However, the secret of your success lies in the very real fact that, despite your lack of actual superpowers, you can climb or swing over those barriers with as much ease as Peter Parker, and net those scoundrels with verbal webbing as strong as enhanced spider silk. And as for that tingly Spider-sense that always alerts our friendly neighborhood Spiderman milliseconds before imminent doom? Your intuition is dialed up just that high this week. Listen to it.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Werewolves are cool, but they’re dumb-shits compared to formidable were-lions. This week, you might sprout fur, a tawny, impressive mane, 6-inch claws, and best of all—a fearsome roar. Don’t resist your inevitable transmogrification into spiritual royalty. It’s your moment to rule as King or Queen of your local jungle. Scary as it may be to suddenly be so mighty, don’t impose selflimitations by locking yourself into a cell before the transformation takes place. Use that soul-brawn. Just remember: As always, with great power comes great responsibility. Use it wisely, and for everyone’s good, not just your own.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Slow-motion dreams were first engineered by self-torturing Virgo minds. Fleeing some terrible circumstance or horrific monster, your legs suddenly become leaden, and the air as thick and obstructive as pudding. You can’t even inhale it to scream for help (which probably wouldn’t come). As excruciating as one-quarter velocity may be, you might wish for it when confronted with weeks like this one, where virtually everything will happen three times more quickly than you’re used to. Just run with it, Virgo (as if you had a choice). By the time you’re next afflicted with one of those terrifying time-lapse trances, you may even welcome it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Barbara Kingsolver, one of my favorite writers, wrote wisdom I think you’ll find relevant and useful: “Sex will get you through times with no money better than money will get you through times with no sex.” Redefine your notion of richness this week. Instead of arbitrarily assigning value to things based on how much they cost in a store, or how thick they make your wallet, base what they’re worth on how useful they are to your own serenity and delight. Once you reconfigure your spiritual bank account, you’ll feel wealthier than your mere dollars could ever make you. Why would you ever measure your worth or wellbeing the old way again? SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
The ubiquitous presence of my eye-patch-wearing neighbor perversely dominated one chapter of my life. He spent months on end slowly (and noisily) sawing limbs from an elegant oak in his backyard. To endure the constant aggravation, I invented this story about him: “He’s a retired B-movie actor, obsessed with endlessly reliving his chainsawwielding moments of glory.” That reminds me of you. He spent an entire season on a task he could have completed in one sweaty afternoon. How much time will you waste enacting your nostalgia, Scorpio? Release your history, and stop recreating the same tired scene, again and again.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Some mushroom spores are so light and robust that they can escape the atmosphere and survive the frigid vacuum of space. Therefore, it’s remotely possible that some of the fungi on our planet may have propagated beyond our solar system, or may be the descendants of extraterrestrial mold that made its way here. How does this impact your life? Only conceptually: some of the toadstools that surround you now may look ordinary, but they’ve come farther and hold more secrets than you think. It’s up to you to find out which of the mushrooms are poisonous, which are delicious, and which are downright magical. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Vomiting can make you feel helpless and pathetic. But it can be a source of power, too—if what you’re ejecting so unpleasantly from your body is something poisonous or rotten. Don’t look for straightforward moments of glory and strength this week. Instead, expect more subversive forms of it. For instance, it’s probably the best week this year to rid your life of the most vile and venomous spiritual toxins clogging your etheric arteries. Actually getting rid of them might be horribly foul, but just like that rush of endorphins after a marathon puke session, once you’re done you’ll feel better than you have in ages.
