Our greatest export?
WILL HAWAII BECOME THE WORLD’S POT DEALER?
If state Representatives Joe Souki, D-Wailuku, and Angus McKelvey, D-Lahaina, get their way, Hawaii will become a pot dealer to the world. Or at least, those select portions of the world that look upon marijuana as no more dangerous than alcohol. Call it a getrich-quick scheme, an outlandish violation of the federal government’s prohibition against marijuana sales or just a gateway bill to state cannabis legalization, but HB 2124 is a high-profile assault in our nation’s Weed War. Introduced by Representative Rida Cabanilla, D-Ewa Beach, and co-sponsored by 10 others, including Souki and McKelvey, the bill’s abstract says that it “Creates a working group in the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism to develop a plan to legalize the cultivation of marijuana for export purposes only and tax the resulting revenues for purposes of funding state programs.” This could, according to Cabanilla, directly and positively benefit Maui as well. Maybe. “I’m not a marijuana connoisseur, so I really could not say on my personal experience, but what people say is that the ‘Maui Wowie’ is the best,” Cabanilla said in a Jan. 25 Associated Press story on the bill. Now if the bill passes (a big if), and if the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) goes along with it (a far bigger if), Hawaii would start growing marijuana for export to nations like Uruguay and the Czech Republic, according to that Jan. 25 AP story. Or at least, that’s what the bill drafters had hoped, but it seems that those two nations are iffy, too. “Uruguay plans to grow its own marijuana and the Czech Republic is only allowing imports from the Netherlands,” reported the AP. Stupid Netherlands, strutting around Europe like it’s the biggest dope dealer around (oh wait, it is). Anyhoo, the bill text includes logic, rational economic analysis and even a bit of Hawaiian mythology–in other words, it has no chance of becoming reality. Still, it could happen, and that’s more than
enough reason to actually read the bill. “Hawaii is well situated to provide an abundant supply to fill a growing demand,” states the bill. “The rich Hawaiian soils, coupled with a continually temperate climate, provide ideal conditions for yearround outdoor farming. These advantages should be capitalized upon for the benefit of enhancing revenue for the State.” As for where those potential tax revenues from dealing pot to other nations might go, the bill outlines four entities: “the department of education, to fund mandatory pre-school; the department of health, for care of the elderly and disabled, specifically for increased payments for care home [sic] and foster home operators; Hawaii public housing authority, for the construction of more state-owned public housing; and the Hawaii housing finance and development corporation for the construction of affordable housing.” Is this not the best bill ever written? And I haven’t even gotten to the money quote: “The Goddess Pele has provided Hawaii with the best soil in the nation for marijuana cultivation,” states the bill. “[I]t should be capitalized upon for the good of her people.” On Jan. 23, HB 2124 was referred to three House committees. Where it goes from there is anyone’s guess.
And now for a personal note. This weekend marks the fourth annual Maui Fringe Festival, which is put on by Maui OnStage. It’s an eclectic three-day deal that includes a ton of dramatic and performance arts. This year there will be showcase performances from Pat Masumoto, Virginia Sandell and Chris Rose; a Fringe Cabaret show; the Adaptations Dance Theater; and the plays Tale of Kathaka by Antara Bhardwaj, Maple Street Militia by Teresa Salyer and War Stories by yours truly. That’s right: I wrote a play. It’s just a short one-act thing–a scene, really–but it’s the first time anything I’ve written will appear on stage. As far as the story, it’s very simple. Set in the Honolulu International Airport terminal in 1965, it involves two
will direct (disclosure: she’s my girlfriend). Things seem to be moving smoothly now, but the whole thing was terrifying a few weeks ago. Casting the play was difficult, to say the least–partly, I suspect, because it’s a drama with two male leads, whereas most plays on the island seem to be musicals, comedies or musical comedies with mostly female casts. In any case, Angie was persistent, and calm, and finally secured Nakagawa (who starred in numerous local shows, including MAPA’s Fresher Ahi and Lesser Ahi) and Takaki (who has performed with the local Talking Stories theater group). Casting a play, setting up rehearsals, acquiring props–all these things were unfamiliar to me. Thankfully, Angie has considerable theater experience. She’s appeared in two plays so far on Maui–both at ProArts in Kihei–and has starred in and directed numerous plays in Northern

men who flew during World War II, one American and one Japanese, who randomly meet and start to talk about their lives. The play stars Derek Nakagawa as the American vet and Jason Takaki as the Japanese vet. Oh, and Angie Thompson

California. And though I wrote the play, I thought it best to just give the whole thing to her and let her, as director, turn it into something that people will enjoy seeing. That’s why I haven’t attended any rehearsals. In fact, I won’t see the play until the festival’s opening night. Sure, I get regular updates on the play’s progress, but as far as getting the thing done, it’s entirely in the hands of Angie, Derek and Jason. For someone like me, used to directing the presentation of my writing in MauiTime, this can be stressful. But my hope is that it’ll lead to more audience enjoyment, which I think is the ultimate goal of all theatrical works. The Maui Fringe Festival runs Friday, Jan. 31 through Sunday, Feb. 2 at the historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. Imua and Maui College Childcare (IMCC) has launched what they are calling the “Demonstration Project,” which was set to begin operation this month. The goal of the demonstration project is to provide quality childcare for students attending UHMC who may need the assistance with childcare in order to maintain class attendance and complete their courses. “Quality childcare is often the burden that makes it difficult for some Maui students to successfully complete their education,” said Juli Patao, UHMC

Students and local leaders from across the island picked up butts at Hana Bay, Baldwin Beach, Kahului Harbor, Waiehu, Olowalu, Canoe Beach and Sugar Beach in Maui. Malaman Maui Nui, Sustainable Coastlines and the Hawaii Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii pitched in to help organize the cleanups and follow-up actions. The following day, students and members of the groups gathered at the county administration building to present their findings to the public and the Maui County Council. Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa recognized their efforts and declared the day to be “Butts Off Our Beaches Day.” The Maui Surfrider Chapter will be continue to work with groups on Maui and across the state in an effort to pass legislation to create smoke-free beaches. Looks like all you Maui residents who’ve been slowly dying in the consumer wasteland that lies between Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Costco will finally get some relief. According to a Jan. 27 Pacific Business News post, on Thursday, Jan.30 Safeway’s Property Development Centers will break ground on the new 275,000 square-foot Pu‘unene Shopping Center, which includes a Target–the first on Maui–as its anchor. PBN added that Target’s target for opening is March 2015. That should give Target just enough time to climb out of the company’s recent data breach that compromised credit and debit card information on an estimated 70 million customers. Well, that’s assuming anyone’s are actually concerned about the data breach: on Jan. 28, the Associated Press reported that most people, though worried about the compromised data, aren’t doing much about it: “But just 37 percent have tried to use cash for
purchases rather than pay with plastic in response to data thefts like the one at Target, while only 41 percent have checked their credit reports,” the AP reported. “And even fewer have changed their online passwords at retailers’ websites, requested new credit or debit card numbers from their bank or signed up for a credit monitoring service.” But hey, we’re getting a Target. Woo. While it certainly will make life easier for residents who prefer Target’s plants, toys and cheaply made furniture to that of WalMart, it will also make Maui just a little more like the Mainland. -Anthony Pignataro

CHILDCARE COMING TO UHMC Childcare is at an all time high in this country. In fact, childcare is often now more expensive than tuition at state colleges, according to a report from Child Care Aware of America. The report states that in nearly two-thirds of the country, average childcare costs cost were greater than yearly tuition tuitio and fees at a four year public college. County Council launched a smoking ban at the Big Island’s beaches and parks in 2012 and the Oahu Chapter helped pass a SmokeFree Beaches & Parks bill in 2013. The Maui Chapter is hoping the Valley Isle follows the lead with the “Hold On To Your Butts Campaign,” designed to reduce the amount of second-hand smoke and toxic litter on the beaches–noting that cigarettes are the most littered items here and around the world. Building on the momentum of Oahu and the Big Island, Rep. Kaniela Ing from South Maui has sponsored a bill to ban smoking on all beaches of Hawaii. If the bill–HB 325–passes, Hawaii would become the first state in the nation to ban smoking on all of its beaches. EVERYONE’S ABOVE AVERAGE Ask Americans how they stand compared to their fellow countrymen, and in survey after survey, the vast majority rank themselves “above average” in such areas as driving skill, sexual prowess and general honesty. A recent study of English prisoners, published in the British Journal of Social Psychology, revealed that those miscreants think they, too, are in the upper half. They rate themselves above average (whether compared to Britons in prison or in society at large) in compassion, generosity, dependability, trustworthiness and honesty. In fact, the only trait on the University of Southampton survey on which the criminals failed to rank themselves as better than the typical Brit was “law-abidingness.” On that trait, the inmates rated themselves merely as “average.”

Pastor Ray Scott Teets, 66, of Fallen Timbers Community Chapel in Springhill Township, Pa., arrested in November for alleged “inappropriate contact” with an 11-year-old girl (daughter of parishioners) on at least three occasions, denied to police that the meetings were inappropriate. The girl, he said, requested counseling with him and suggested that the sessions take place in the storage shed in back of the chapel. The girl said there were six meetings, lasting about 15 minutes each, and denied initiating them.

In December, a California appeals court endorsed actor Tippi Hedren’s victory suing the lawyer who had earlier failed to win compensation for her from a 2006 studio accident. In Hedren’s most famous movie role, she was attacked by birds in Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film, and in 2006 had been clobbered by falling scenery caused by birds nesting in an attic over a stage. And a man who won a Hollywood raffle to watch the finale of Breaking Bad with cast members was arrested in Fort Myers, Fla., in January and faces his own intent-to-sell drug charges. Two weeks earlier, unrelated to the show or the raffle, a man with the same name as the show’s protagonist (Walter White) was sentenced in Billings, Mont., to 12 years in prison on drug charges.
TOO MUCH INFORMATION Arvind Kejriwal, fresh from his electoral victory as chief minister of the state of New Delhi, India, was to report to work on Monday, Dec. 30 to begin fulfilling his anti-corruption administration–one that promised unprecedented “transparency” to make government visible to constituents. But the transparency of his first public announcement was perhaps over-the-top–that he was taking the day off because of a bout of diarrhea. Said a colleague, “When the chief minister gives you a minute-by-minute update on his bowel movements, hail democracy.”
THIS WEEK IN DOLPHIN SLAUGHTER Officials in Taiji, Japan, announced in October they would build a tourist attraction to publicize a nearby annual dolphin cull in which thousands are killed. Park planners hope to attract visitors to swim and cavort in pools among the lovable, captured dolphins–and also to dine on dolphin meat (and rare whale meat) scored from the culls. Conservationists are, of course, disgusted by the project.
FINE POINTS OF THE LAW Michael Robertson, 31, argued via a lawyer before Massachusetts’s highest court in November that his arrest for taking “upskirt” photographs of a woman on the subway should be tossed out–asserting that he has a constitutional right to take pictures of anything that is not covered up in public. Said his lawyer (a woman), noting that the victim’s skirt provided only partial covering, “If a clothed person reveals a body part whether it was intentional or unintentional, he or she cannot expect privacy.” Robertson’s case had been suspended at the trial court while he seeks a ruling on his legal interpretation.
PERSPECTIVE For nearly 30 years, until 2007, the U.S. national symbol, the bald eagle, was endangered and protected, but officially they (along with golden eagles) are now so insignificant that the government is willing to endure dozens of them being chopped to death annually in the blades of “clean energy” wind turbines. An Associated Press investigation in December revealed that the federal government is purposely ignoring the eagles’ attrition out of fear that outraged conservationists’ campaigns will hinder development of wind power as an alternative to coal-produced electricity. (Another recent AP investigation revealed a similar painful choice in the continued commitment to ethanol as a cleaner alternative fuel even though that cleanliness is being increasingly questioned, and even though ethanol production requires the massive diversion of corn that could inexpensively feed millions of hungry people worldwide.) ■

Though he uses veryy build simple toys to buil ld his Sawaya’s pieces, Saway ya’s artworks are incredibly incre edibly
complex. Forr inseparastance, the sep paration between the face/mask and d green head of his gre een Eclectic sculpture at Ec clectic smooth Image is smoo oth and clean, and d the open head is an ope en box. But on his hiis blue structure, the break b head between the he ead and shoulders is jagged, as though the break b process. was a wrenching process The engineering alone required to build such large, realisealistic structures is remarkable–made all the more so by thee fact that Sawaya eschews LEGO’s special and/or curved pieces. es.
All of his works, regardless of his subject, come from the same regular old LEGO blocks that the company has been building for over half a century. “I focus on the rectangular pieces mainly because there’s a nostalgia thing going on but also because there’s something about it,” Sawaya told Artiscle. “I love the distinct lines, the very sharp corners, and when you see the brick up close obviously you see all those right angles, but as you step away the curves become evident. That’s where the magic of it all happens.” In 2007, Sawaya appeared on The Colbert Report. He showed pictures of some of his pieces, including “Yellow,” a bust similar to the green and blue sculptures at Eclectic Image but with the yellow individual tearing open his chest to reveal a pile of yellow ye LEGO bricks spilling out. He with also presented his host wi ith a life-size statue of Stephen Col30,000 bert, made from about 30 0,000 LEGO blocks. that He also told Colbert tha at his fragile works aren’t quite as fragil le as they appear. In fact, he said d that with each brick gets painted wi ith glue. In the early days, Sawaya told to old October, NewYork.com last Octobe r, he would build a new structure, structu ure, then tear it down when he was happy together. with it and glue it togethe er. But these days, he said, he justt glues as he goes. “If I don’t like how w something looks, even if I’ve worked wo orked on it chisel for a while, I have to chise el away days or hours’ worth of work, which w can said.. “But that’s be heartbreaking,” he said part of the process.” 40,000 There are about 40,00 0 “adult fans world, of LEGO” around the wo rld, the Asback sociated Press reported b ack in 2010. They are largely people who w grew up playing with the bricks w when they were kids, and nowadays see seee no reason to stop fiddling with w the bricks. And why not? no ot? Unlike many toys, a pile pile of LEGO bricks demands thinking and an nd creativity. “It’s “Itt’s great to get people peop ple to start creating things thinggs again,” Becky Paschoal Pasch hoal told me. “We’vee really lost that.” That’s why w it’s not surprising that Sawaya isn’t the only artist currently working with LEGO. L Sean Kenney is a New York artist with w more than two million LEGO piecess in his studio. He constructs sculpturess and structures well similar to Sawaya, as wel ll as special, highly detailed LEGO portraits. In fact, for as little as $695, Kenney will build build a custom 20 you by 25-inch portrait of yo ou entirely out of LEGO bricks (a larger, 30 0 by 40-inch portrait sells for $1,695). German Then there’s the Germa an artist Jan Vormann, who’s somewhat more pla playful. He goes around the world patching holes in walls, streets and monuments with LEGO blocks. His favorite work, he told Juxtapoz in 2010, is in Berlin,
where used LEGO bricks to plug bullet and shrapnel holes left over from World War II. As for Sawaya, he has a museum exhibit that tours the nation. “He only works with about three dealers nationwide,” Paschoal told me. “We’re the only gallery in the state that sells his works. Our goal is to have a show with him.” As for the price of his works, no one who’s ever shopped for even a small LEGO set will be surprised to hear that they’re expensive. “They start at twelve-five,” Becky Paschoal told me, indicating a $12,500 sale price. “LEGO is a petroleum product, so it goes up every year.”

making aspects of the concert industry. Dell says he’s worked with artists like the Beatles, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Ozzy Osbourne, Pink Floyd and, of course, KISS. While operating their merchandising business, a division of Winterland Productions, the Furano brothers began selling Tshirts to Peter Morton, who had launched the first Hard Rock Cafe in London. After selling Morton millions of shirts, Dave Furano decided that “when he grew up,” he wanted to open his own restaurant where he could sell his own T-shirts. Following a drastic change in the concert promotion landscape in the late 1990s, Furano began working on that goal. He had an opportunity to open a site at Los Angeles International Airport, but realized he needed a real restaurant operator as a partner. He knew Zislis, who owned a popular Manhattan Beach restaurant called Rock’n Fish, and urged him to join the new venture. Zislis politely turned him down. Then one night the Furanos invited Zislis to a KISS concert. They were standing backstage with the band and noticed that the two longest lines in the building were for T-shirts and beer. “I think it’s in the
you want to set-up shop and be part of the neighborhood, you have to contribute.” For that reason, Rock & Brews presented $10,000 to the Paia Youth and Cultural Center at its Sneak Preview event on Jan. 26. During the event, they had a traditional Hawaiian blessing, showcased the island art that graces the walls and offered a sampling of the food. “Before there was opposition, we blessed the site,” Zislis said, addressing skeptics. “We had a blessing before we demolished the building; we had a blessing when the roof went on.” Stanley seconds the respect for the location. “What a great little town this is,” he said. “Sure, you can go to Front Street, you could find some place in Wailea, but we wanted to find a place that was a little more intimate. There’s a warmth and there is a sense of community here. I understand people’s concern because when you love your community, you don’t want it changed. And we have no desire

ock & Brews, Paia’s controversial new restaurant located in the old Jacques spot, promises more than good food. The place certainly has deep roots in the concert industry. Co-owners Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are original members of the band KISS. Their partners are concert industry and merchandising veterans Dave and Dell Furano and restaurateur-hotelier-brewmaster Michael Zislis. Maui residents and business-owners Mark and Chrystie Blietz are also part of the ownership team. Dave Furano says he’s worked with Bill Graham, the father of the modern day concert business. He served as President of Bill Graham Presents as well as tour manager for some of the hottest acts of our time including the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, George Harrison and Bob Dylan. Furano’s brother Dell brings more than 35 years experience in the music, entertainment, marketing and licensing industries to the project. He’s been credited with creating the first concert T-shirt, which has grown into one of the strongest money-
beer,” Zislis said. The partners–and the idea for Rock & Brews–clicked and they opened their first location in El Segundo, CA. David Furano said his partner Zislis’ dedication to quality food is admirable. “Gene and Paul, or Dell or I, we needed someone who really had passion for great food,” he said. “And Michael has that visceral passion–always wanting to make it better.” Zislis said half of the menu at the new Paia location will be similar to their other locations. The remainder will represent local cuisine. They will offer Coconut Crusted Mahi Mahi Sliders alongside their signature Giant Soft German Pretzel. A Maui Onion Tomato Salad will join The Strawberry Fields Salad in the VIP Salads section. Specialties including the Mosh Pit Mac ‘N’ Cheese and Santa Maria Tri Tip Sandwich will share the stage with a Hawaiian RibEye. The menu also will offer gluten-free pizzas and gluten-free beers. R&B also plans to highlight local
Good times for Paia Youth Center breweries, offering nine beers from Maui Brewing Company and eight from Kona Brewing Company. The restaurant will offer indoor and outdoor dining in a family-friendly, concertlike environment. It will feature multiple big screens presenting historic concert videos ranging from Queen at Wembley Stadium to Rush at Rio. There are no plans to host live bands at the location, which is set to open mid-February. The partners also said they worked hard to honor the culture with the restaurant’s ambiance, art and charitable efforts. “We don’t come in and establish a restaurant in a neighborhood without being sympathetic to the community,” said Paul Stanley. “Besides being rude, it’s stupidity. Hawaiian people are proud–and rightly so–of their history and their heritage. And to incorporate it... makes our restaurant here much more immediately a part of the community. Whether it is helping schools or local charities, that’s your obligation. If
to change something that is perfect. Why would we change Paia? It’s so unique. We are just thrilled to be there.” As for Simmons, he said he is very proud of the restaurant but it was obvious that his passion is fueled by his palate. When he spoke of his favorite dish–the “Purple Rain” Drops dessert–it was as though he was speaking of his notorious sexual appetite. “There is something called a beignet,” he began, speaking in a near-hushed voice. “It’s a little crusty on the outside with caramel sauce and powdered sugar. When you bite into it, either hot caramel sauce or hot fudge squirts in your mouth. It is sinful beyond anything. It is so good, you close your eyes to concentrate on the taste. You make a sound–mmmmm–like a woman in the throws.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

made on Maui goat cheese. Vasquez says his favorite Filipino dishes are kare kare and adobo, but at home it’s his wife who does the cooking. “Chicken adobo is our national dish and it’s always what my kids request for my wife to make,” says Vasquez. “Kare Kare is my comfort food. As a child, I always knew that there was a timely process to Kare Kare. The anticipation of this dish is ingrained in my brain; layers of scents culminate to a final product that to this day, just the thought of it still makes me salivate.” Not long after the Master P-Noy contest, Vasquez and a handful of other local Filipino chefs–Joey Macadangdang (Roy’s, Ka‘anapali), Gevin Utrillo (Hyatt Ka‘anapali), Isaac Bancaco (Ka‘ana Kitchen, Andaz Maui), James Simpliciano (Simplifresh), Jake Belmonte (Maui Culinary Academy), Jojo Vasquez (The Plantation House), Larry Badua (Badua’s Catering),

M
y introduction to Chef Jojo Vasquez happened in October, at the Master P-noy Chef competition in the Maui Fil-Am Heritage Festival at the Maui Mall. Vasquez was taking his passion for locally sourced and inspired dishes up against defending champion Chef Joey Macadangdang. Vasquez’s dish incorporated a seafood broth with paria (bitter melon), the secret ingredient in the challenge. It was creative and refreshing. While he didn’t win the competition, I wanted more of Vasquez’s bright and crafty Filipino fusion. Lucky for me, he’s the Executive Chef at the Plantation House Restaurant in Kapalua. You can dine on Vasquez’s menu, breakfast through dinner, seven days a week. There’s a whole lot to love here. The views of Pailolo channel are spectacular, and the east end of Molokai almost kisses the head of Maui here. The open air dining
room and bar overlook the rambling expanse of golf course, trees and mauka vista, and quick passing mists are common. The Plantation House opened in 1991 and Vasquez came on board in 2013 after a stint with the Ritz Carlton Kapalua at Banyan Tree. He was also Executive Chef at Morimoto’s Waikiki, and appeared on Iron Chef as Morimoto’s assistant. Never really bit by the celeb chef bug, Vasquez’s attentiveness to food comes from his heart, family, roots and travels. Vasquez says some of his favorite ingredients are local organic Kula corn, Swiss chard, Kula Dave’s tomatoes and Flying Squirrel Farm’s heirloom cherry tomatoes from Makawao. For proteins, there’s local snapper, kampachi, ahi and foie gras. “For breakfast we added Banana Fosters pancakes, pineapple upside down pancakes, a Santa Fe omelet and my Sous Chef Mike Higashi created Wagyu steak and egg tacos with cheddar, jalapeño and house salsa,” says Vasquez. “For lunch we added Italian sausage hoagie with peppers and onions, Coconut shrimp with pineapple slaw and Korean barbecue sauce, organic Kula corn and Swiss chard risotto and Spicy chicken wings using the local
Adoboloco ‘Maui no ka oi’ hot sauce.” On a recent visit I started with the kampachi tartar and wakame-recommended by Vasquez. The pressed and formed kampachi is served with a dashi-soy, and the dish shows Vasquez’s mastery of flavor and broth. The nasturtium from Monica Bodar’s Napili-Flo farm top off the experience with bright color and surprising spiciness hidden in the petals. Vasquez’s ahi is magnificent all over the menu, from the morning Benedict to ahi sashimi at the bar, but he seems proudest of the dinner entree–seared ahi with Ali’i mushrooms, served with Swiss chard and kaffir lime vin blanc. It’s featured on the Plantation House homepage. It’s a gorgeous dish that will make you wonder why seared ahi isn’t always served with a delicate wine reduction cream sauce. The Hamakua mushroom is a perfect conspirator here, channelling its delicate, yet sturdy, textures in line
Monchong
with fish and wine perfectly. “It is important to know the science of food,” says Vasquez. “What we do as chefs on a daily basis is based not only on skills, but on math and science. I was enamored by the creations of Ferran Adria and Grant Achatz. When I travelled with my wife, we always agreed that it would be to places for a culinary sabbatical as well. I yearned for more inspiration with every bite, and challenged myself to heighten my cuisine with these new applications. It’s always fun to play, but the goal is to elevate and not muddle the flavors, or over-process. The final plate should always keep the integrity of the dish.” The monchong, my favorite of his fish entrees, exemplifies this integrity and adds a touch of his humble Filipino cuisine. The monchong is lightly bathed in a shallow broth of tamarind and coriander–a definite nod to sinigang. The local bak choy, tomato and micro watercress are remarkable with each bite. The Surfing Goat Dairy starter has a surprising savory granola that has an addictive texture and flavor with the fresh
Riko Bartolome (Slow Food Maui) and Sheldon Simeon (Mala Wailea)–banded together to raise money in relief funds for the Philippines at the Binhi At Ani Filipino Community Center. For Vasquez, being a part of the community seems as important to him and his culinary work. “We started planning before Haiyan struck,” Vasquez says. “It was actually difficult to find a nonprofit partner, so we decided to team up with American Red Cross and create a special fund for the Philippines. When the typhoon hit, so many locally based relief organizations came out of the woodwork. We tried our best to spread the funds where they would be of direct help to our people. We wanted to do more. We raised a little over $20,000. It’s not in the news anymore, so we need to keep the dialogue going in our own communities because the need is still great and the work is far from over.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

‘Labor Day’ As a love story, it’s a beautifully shot failure Labor Day ★★★★★ Rated PG13 / 111 Min.
A
t the start of Jason Reitman’s new drama Labor Day, a mother and son are shopping when a wounded man appears, gently grabs the son by the neck and forces them to drive him to their home. Once there, he reveals himself to be an escaped convict. Yet, there’s something different about him. Initially, the mother and son are on edge but gradually, they warm up to him. The criminal, played by Josh Brolin, has real culinary skills, wants to give the boy much needed attention and mostly speaks in a kind, soft tone. The mother, played by Kate Winslet, is divorced, acknowledges the need for a father figure in her son’s life and gradually falls for her captor. It’s one thing for Winslet’s character to experience Stockholm Syndrome. It’s another for the entire movie to ask that of its audience. This may be the gentlest film ever made about home invasion, though Reitman is less concerned with
shaping a thriller than crafting an allegory for an American family. The story takes place in 1987, around the time when divorce became a common household word, devoted to countless “After School Specials.” This unorthodox tale of a murderer on the run, who surprisingly becomes a father and husband to his prisoners, is best taken as a fable. In fact, the screenplay is based on a novel and I imagine it worked well on the written page. But on the big screen, it’s rather odd. Even if we’re supposed to be taken by Brolin’s lovable brute, there’s virtually no suspense. Although set in the ‘80s, it looks and feels like a movie taking place far earlier. The tone, lighting, art direction and visual approach reminded me of To Kill a Mockingbird. Tobey Maguire narrates and has a very-brief cameo near the end; he was originally cast as the interviewer in Life of Pi before director Ang Lee edited him out, reportedly for having too distracting an appearance. That’s definitely the case here, as his voice-over is so distinct that you’re constantly reminded of the famous actor. In his one scene as a suspicious cop, James Van Der Beek evokes more tension than Brolin’s entire performance. Both
And they said romance was dead.
Brolin and Winslet have been much better elsewhere, as their acting here is as tonally shaky as the film overall. Everything is so nice and reserved, psychological depth is avoided in favor of unabashed sentimentality. Romantics may disagree, but can you really root for Brolin to woo Winslet when he’s tying her up and forcing her to lie to her neighbors? I liked the scene where the wheelchairbound Barry is left in Winslet’s care, a sequence that develops in surprising ways. There’s also the scene where Brolin teaches Winslet and her son how to make a peach pie; aside from Waitress and The Food Channel, the making of a pie has never appeared so sensual. We see Winslet and son go to a theater
showing the 1985 film D.A.R.Y.L., despite this being a film set in 1987. Otherwise, the bathed-in-a-warm-summer-glow cinematography and art direction are lovely and convey the appropriate feelings of nostalgia. Reitman’s previous film, Up in the Air, was smart and engrossing, where this one is a respectable, beautifully shot failure. The ending seems to indicate we were always meant to view this as a love story. If that’s the case, then this is the biggest crock of a romance since Endless Love or the entire Twilight series. Ladies, if a man holds you and your son hostage during the Labor Day weekend, even if he looks like Brolin and teaches your son how to play baseball, do not fall in love with him! ■

Horoscope
Sign Language AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
There’s no excuse to sit on the couch eating bonbons, Aquarius—at least not this week. With the Sun’s nuclear force fueling you, communicating your ideas in a way that inspires yourself and others to actually do something about them has rarely been simpler. You will inspire almost without trying—but you do have to try. Don’t waste your motivational might—especially since your message is so relevant to so many in your life, on numerous levels. We need you to lovingly kick our asses with your sweet wisdom. Get up on that soapbox and preach, please. Amen, hallelujah. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Sweetness is the way to go. Forget a lame, linear agenda of always getting your way, or exactly what you want (sweetness alone rarely works for that). But if you’re up for attempting a deeper game—a more evolved schema—like simply aiming for a positive/constructive outcome to any given situation, honey will work better than vinegar. This less selfish goal allows for surprising scenarios that rock; that are, in fact, far superior to the ones you’d have manifested on your own. Channel as much rich, molasses-thick kindness this week as you can—forgetting the clenched fake sweet of saccharin or the harsh tang of vinegar—and you’re more likely to get more deeply satisfying shit than the stuff you thought you wanted before.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
I’m no Zeus. Rarely do ideas spring, like goddesses, fully-formed from my forehead. Instead, they’re usually born as tiny, barely discernible seeds that only develop into actually workable concepts after much nourishment and care. Many of them never sprout at all, but I water every one, just in case. Although you’ve experienced the occasional epiphany, your creative methods usually resemble mine, out of necessity—which is why I’m surprised to see you neglecting so many idea-plantlets. Stop waiting for an Athena-quality brainchild to be born—even by spiritual C-section. Instead nourish the promise of each germ of an idea you already have—there’s no other way to discover if it’ll end up teeny or titanic. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
My dad used to play this joke in which he’d rub a jalapeno pepper along the rims of others’ drinking glasses. As they sought to quench the burning with their beverages, they’d only aggravate the problem. Someone’s played this kind of juvenile prank on you. Don’t fall for it. The first two solutions your jittery brain will come up with can only exacerbate the situation, not ameliorate it. When you start feeling the sting, don’t frantically flail trying to extinguish it. If you resist your initial panic, you’ll notice the pain isn’t as intense as it initially seemed—and you’ll be able to find a realistic answer to it—one that will actually work.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
You bounce between impractical genius and grounded brilliance; usually the trick is timing—knowing which to utilize when. That’s where I can help. For instance, this is a lousy week for mundane affairs, like balancing your checkbook, looking for a job, or negotiating a business deal. It’s much better for magnificent leaps of imagination: learning to live happily on practically no money; envisioning a lucrative career doing only what you want; or traversing the chaotic emotional terrain between you and your fellow human beings. It’s like you’re farsighted, instead of myopically focused on local minutiae—the more out there something is this week, the better you can navigate it. Save the routine trivia for later (or never). TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Building a rock wall is an art. You can’t just haphazardly stack stone; your structure will collapse repeatedly into a shifting and dangerous mound of heavy granite. The size, shape, and heft of each stone has to be carefully evaluated and considered in reference to the others to ensure a tight, stable fit. Constructing the inevitably variable but necessarily dependable boundaries that define the edges of your life is an even more painstaking process. As you develop and delineate the emotional frontiers in your closest relationships this week, be careful. Don’t just stack stone. Breathe deeply, take your time, and do it right. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Invisibility technology has come a long way. These days there’s really cool material that mirrors whatever’s behind it, giving the illusion of transparency. Even though donning a cloak of invisibility may seem just too Harry-Potterish for you to take seriously, you might wish you had one, anyway, this week. The more ably you fly under the radar and avoid any and all notice, the better off you’ll be. Luckily for you, you have your own form of imperceptibility that works without magic or cutting-edge technology, since it’s based entirely on your own sense of timing, tact, and gut instinct. Use it. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
You are often the hardest sign to write a weekly horoscope for, Cancer. The problem: your ruling planet is the moon, which slips from sign to sign with slutty abandon every two and half days, and has myriad anonymous encounters with other planets along the way. During that time, you’re liable to experience any number of shifting moods, which might or might not mutate or catalyze significant events in your life. I try to look at the bigger stuff, but sometimes—as you know—the little shit is what’s most important—like this week: Ignore the tsunamis that come your way. It’s the little waves before or after that are more likely to knock you down.
I was thinking about one time I lost my temper (a rare event) and threw a paper cup of lukewarm chai at someone. Although that ridiculously juvenile and pathetic gesture didn’t win me any points, I have to admit it felt sort of good. This week, as you enter the crossroads I just left, consider your options: One fork, down which you keep your cool, will more likely advance your agenda—if in a totally lame, anticlimactic way. The other fork—the one where you blow your lid and vent emotional steam—won’t win your argument for you. It’s a tough choice. Think about it this way: It’s nice to get what you want, but they say that people who express their anger live longer. It’s your call. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Light acts as both particle and wave, depending on the situation—but never both at the same time; it can only be observed in one state or the other at any given moment. This essential paradox resembles the koan of your existence right now (A koan is a riddle Zen Buddhists use to focus the mind during meditation, and enhance their intuitive powers). Stop flipping your shit trying to wrap your head around it. It’s something you can only understand with your heart. Once you do, you’ll realize that not only can you be more than one apparently contradictory thing—you have to be. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
You have fleas, scabies, and crabs. Although they’re manifesting more on the psychological plane than the physical one, they’re no less injurious and real. These tiny parasites have been burrowing under your spiritual armor for way too long now. At first they seemed such a minor nuisance that you lazily refused to go through the admittedly excessive hassle of actually ridding yourself of them. But now their numerous miniscule bites and irritations have mounted to an agonizing itch that threatens to cloud every thought and obscure every action. Exterminating them once and for all may be tortuous and complicated, but it’s never going to get easier. Better now than later. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
It’s like you’d almost quit smoking. You’d done the patch/inhaler/gum thing, and finally kicked the physical cravings, if not the psychological ones. You were just starting to actually taste food again. Your lungs had just begun to heal. That’s why it’s so upsetting to see you fall off that wagon. What’s missing from your disciplinary regime? A real decision—the kind people make when they find out they’re pregnant, or have cancer. Don’t wait until your situation gets that extreme. If it’s a decision you’d make under those circumstances, it’s one you should make in any case. Please do so. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com.
