all these decades, and why so many of our visitors return again and again.” But mostly, Kaye was pissed at Ellison’s nonchalant embrace of covering the island with windmills. “Most distressing, though, is the Business Insider’s statement that you have invested in “everything from wind farms to local businesses.” I can’t speak to the local business comment, although the ubiquitous landscaping we see all over town probably qualifies as an investment. But really, Larry. Wind Farms? Where? Surely not here on Lanai!” In many ways, Ellison is a departure from the previous Lanai barons. But as Kaye is apparently discovering, he still looks upon the island as just another of his possessions.

Larry Ellison, the supreme landowner of the island of Lanai, has been getting a lot of very positive press these days throughout Hawaii, including from us. But I couldn’t help but smile at the pushback he got last week in Honolulu Civil Beat from one Lanai resident who can’t quite bring herself to kiss her overlord’s ring. See, Lanai may be one of the smallest inhabited islands in Hawaii, but it’s (mostly) owned by one of the biggest names in the world. Ellison, the founder of Oracle, is worth about $41 billion according to Forbes, making him the third richest American. This is wealth he’s long transformed into real power. In fact, on Sunday, Feb. 16, his 249-acre resort in Rancho Mirage, California hosted President Barack Obama, according to an Associated Press story published the following day. In the summer of 2012, Ellison purchased 98 percent of Lanai. As Wailuku attorney Ben Lowenthal pointed out in a July 2013 edition of his State of Aloha column that runs in The Maui News, Ellison is merely the latest in a long line of land barons who’ve lorded over Lanai since the 19th century. First there was Walter Murray Gibson. Then there was Charles Gay. The Dole Pineapple Company followed after Gay. After that, it was Castle & Cooke CEO David Murdock. Not long after the sale to Ellison went through, many people around Hawaii wondered what Lanai’s residents actually thought of their new island overlord. Initial reports, like the Aug. 2013 Honolulu Magazine story “An Inside Look at Larry Ellison’s Lanai,” were mostly positive. “The talk he’s talking is giving a lot of people hope—a lot of people think he’s the new messiah,” said Lanai small business owner Andrew de la Cruz in the story. “It’s not Ellison’s ideas that are giving people hope, it’s the way he’s involving the community,”
added community activist Butch Gima. Perhaps publicity like that emboldened Ellison to take on near-feudal airs when he started talking up “his” island at a big Oracle event in Las Vegas earlier this month. According to a Feb. 6 story in Business Insider, Ellison even used the word “laboratory” to describe his vision for the island: “We think we can demonstrate that green energy can be economical,” Ellison said according to the story. “We’re going to use our solar power, our wind power grid to convert sea water to fresh water... desalination. We think we can do that in a very effective way and use that fresh water to bring back commercial agriculture.” Ellison reportedly said that he loves Lanai because “the weather is always fabulous” and “always 82 degrees and sunny.” Business Insider reported that he said “We’re empowering the locals to start their own businesses” and that he’s “providing them with the appropriate mentoring and help.” His reason for all this generosity? “We think if we do a good job of taking care of the locals, the locals will do a good job of taking care of our visitors,” Business Insider quoted him as saying. For Lanai resident Sally Kaye, this was
just too much, and she took to Civil Beat to air her grievances against both the Business Insider piece and Ellison in general. “First, you didn’t really ‘buy’ the Hawaiian island of Lanai. You bought the membership interests in Castle & Cooke Resorts, LLC (C&C), which means you not only avoided paying any conveyance tax to the State of Hawaii, but you most definitely did not purchase state and county roads, hospitals, local churches, nor the close to 1,000 private properties the rest of us own here on Lanai,” Kaye wrote in the Feb. 11 story titled “A Lanai ‘Lab Rat’ Responds To Larry Ellison.” Kaye also found Ellison’s reasoning that he needs to be nice to the “locals” so they’ll be nice to tourists insulting. “You told Business Insider that if you ‘do a good job taking care of the locals, the locals will do a good job of taking care of our visitors,’” Kaye wrote. “Leaving aside for a moment how you might define ‘local,’ we like to think we have always taken good care of our visitors, regardless of whether they visit a resident’s ‘ohana, camp

ly have some good news about their beloved Kanemitsu’s Bakery, which has been taking serious fire from the State of Hawaii Health Department for violations dating back to 2000. In fact, the Health Department closed the bakery for the better part of 2012 because of the alleged unsanitary way in which food was prepared and served. Anyway, all that seems to be in the past now, according to a Feb. 14 Pacific Business News story. Apparently, the 80-plus year old bakery has agreed to pay a whopping $20,000 in fines to the state. That’s a lot of dough (literally and figuratively), but given the staggering number of residents who line up there each night for arm-fulls of freshly baked bread, we’re figuring the bakery will probably survive this. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

News Of The Weird OUR COLD DEAD HANDS The semi-obscure Florida Statute 790.15 took center stage in January following a Miami Herald report of a resident of the town of Big Pine Key who routinely target-shoots his handgun in his yard, with impunity, to the consternation of neighbors. The statute permits open firing on private property (except shooting over a public right of way or an occupied dwelling), and several cities have tried, unsuccessfully, to restrict that right, citing “public safety” in residential neighborhoods. (A 2011 lobbying campaign by the National Rifle Association, and a state supreme court decision, nixed any change in the law.) “Negligent” shooting is illegal, but only a misdemeanor. Thus, even skillful shooting next door to a daycare center or in a small yard that abuts a high-trafficked pedestrian street is likely perfectly legal. One Florida legislator who was originally from Alaska noted that even in Anchorage people cannot fire at will in their yards.
ACQUIRED TASTE In December, thieves in Wicklow, Ireland, raided a convent’s field at the Dominican Farm and Ecology Center, stripping it of its entire crop of Brussels sprouts. A nun at the farm said the sisters were devastated to miss out on the lucrative market for high-end Christmas dinners. And in January, Wal-Mart in China recalled its “Five Spice” donkey meat sold in some locations because the popular snack was found to be tainted with fox meat.
LABOR’S INFLUENCE IN FRANCE The French social security agency URSSAF initiated an enforcement action in December against the Mamm-Kounifl music bar in the town of Locmiquelic for underpaying employee contributions–in that the tavern encourages customers to bus their own tables and thus reduces its need to hire more servers. The owner denied he was trying to save money. “It’s [just] our trademark. We want the customer to feel comfortable, a bit like he’s at home.”
CRAPPY ADVERTISING The makers of a product called PooPourri garnered a “coveted” advertising award from USA Today in December as one of the five worst ads of the year. Toilet users concerned about smell are encouraged to spray Poo-Pourri on the commode, preuse. In the television ad, a British-accented female sits on the throne, extolling the product. Opening line: “You would not believe the mother lode I just dropped.” Nonetheless, USA Today still found two other ads that upset its editors more.

Africa’s Eskom electric utility unless the company paid him the equivalent of about $22.3 million for “saving” the firm that amount during the weeks of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Modupe reasoned that he had joined the Zion Christian Church just before the event and had prayed (“successfully”) to God to spare the utility from blackouts and power reductions during that period (which would have cost Eskom millions more). Modupe, open to negotiation, said he would accept a partnership in the company as a compromise.
LUCRATIVE DRUG DEAL Three million Americans are infected with hepatitis C (as are millions more overseas), but a very recent drug, Sovaldi, completely cures it with 84 daily doses. But its manufacturer, Gilead Sciences, has somehow determined that a fair U.S. price for the drug should be $1,000 per pill ($84,000 for the total treatment). Shouldn’t Gilead reduce the price once it has recouped its expensive investment, asked an NPR reporter in December? “That’s very unlikely we would do that,” said Gilead’s Gregg Alton, but “I appreciate the thought.” According to NPR, Gilead “developed” Sovaldi merely by buying Sovaldi’s actual developer for $11 billion. At $84,000 per patient, Gilead would “recoup” that investment from the first 150,000 customers, leaving 2.85 million more U.S. patients to pay $84,000 each, for an income of $239 billion.
PEOPLE WITH ISSUES Trevor Robinson, 67, of Skellingthorpe, England, was re-arrested in November for violating a previous Anti-Social Behavior Order by pushing a doll-carrying baby carriage in public. (He was also reportedly performing a sex act on himself.) The 2009 ASBO barred him from possessing dolls, baby carriages and “any other” means in which toys might be transported. Robinson has admitted a having a problem with dolls–due, he said, to his inability to father children himself.
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Jerry Pancoast, 42, was arrested on at least four charges after a high-speed chase through Iowa’s Polk and Jasper counties in January, following an alleged shoplifting of tweezers and an eyebrow pencil–not even taken by Pancoast but by his companion. Pancoast drove at 100 mph, even on deflated tires and three rims that eventually caused his truck to catch on fire. The episode started as “a simple theft case,” said the arresting officer, until Pancoast abruptly took off. He later explained that he panicked because he knew there were already arrest warrants against him–but a subsequent search turned up none.■

Wedding Guide
2014 Wedding Guide There might be something to that age old romantic tale of love on a secluded island. While Maui is no longer considered secluded, romantic tales of love and union come true on a near-daily basis. The island is highly regarded when it comes to wedded bliss–in fact, there are many couples around world who’ve long dreamed of holding their nuptials on the island. In this year’s annual Wedding Guide, we asked some of the island’s wedding experts for their advice on getting the best wedding day possible.

Want To Take The Stress Out Of Your Wedding? Hire a wedding coordinator
W
edding coordinators are a must for off-island brides, but for onisland couples, it’s often the first expense left out of the budget. “When the big day arrives, coordinators really prove their worth,” says Tori Rogers, who’s been coordinating weddings on Maui since 1998. “Even with the best laid plans, you can expect more than a dozen concerns to arise. But everything will be under control since the wedding coordinator directs set-up and vendor arrival, facilitates and executes your wedding day and troubleshoots and makes executive decisions. All of the situations that arise on a wedding day can be resolved by coordinators, who can use their expertise to promptly fix potential problems. A wedding coordinator will go above and beyond to make your day effortless and stress-free for you.” Rogers’ business, Hawaii Weddings, does 50 to 75 ceremonies each year across the state. Her advice? Don’t worry about the linens or flowers. “What makes a successful event is your guest list, ambiance, entertainment, food and beverage,” says Rogers. “The other details are important, but your guests will not complain about your flowers. They WILL complain about your food if it’s not good. They won’t care if you have fancy linens or white linens, but they WILL leave if they’re bored. Hire professionals. If you hire people on whom you can depend, your day will go seamlessly for you (they will pick up the pieces). If you do not, you will be disappointed with the end result.” Melissa Padilla of Opihi Love says she loves working with brides on their weddings because everything is so one of a kind. “The DIY era is coming to a bit of a close, and weddings are trending to clas-

sic, French country, clean, with a bit of Bohemian,” says Padilla. “Remember what the wedding is about. Don’t get lost in the process, focus on your ceremony! It’s what’s connecting you for life.” White Orchid Weddings is celebrating 25 years of coordinating weddings on Maui, and last December they opened
Purple Orchid Weddings in response to the legalization of same-sex weddings in Hawaii. Owner Carolee Higashino says coordinating a same-sex wedding is pretty much the same as a heterosexual wedding. “They are just the same as a non-same sex wedding,” says Higashino. “Only a few changes, perhaps two bouquets or two
boutonnieres but really no different. We have experienced some vendors whom would not affiliate their services to this due to their religious beliefs, so some changes were needed to be made here. We offer full event planning services to all. It was exciting to launch POW as our samesex option, yet we feel WOW & POW are all one anyway. We offer everything from tuxedos to tiki torches. Seriously, we arrange for all of their needs, including florals, photography, video, officiates, decor, site selection, catering, transportation, entertainment and so much more.” POW and WOW operate on all islands. They’ve also created a WOW design team that can take events even further with style and design. Higashino says couples hate to hear it but her number one tip is to take some time to relax, then hire the best wedding coordinator you can. “I may be biased, of course, but I have seen the good and the bad,” says Higashino. “We work very hard to be sure our clients have the very best care they can when planning their exceptionally special day. Hawaii is a sacred place and should also be respected as so. Our talented team of planners are hand-picked to be sure that they represent both POW and WOW but also Hawaii. Your planner should be affiliated with local organizations such as the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau. They should also be affiliated nationally with other wedding organizations. Check their status on line via Yelp, the Knot and other avenues such as this to check their credibility. Ask locals who they would recommend. Finally, know they’re on your side to be sure make your event effortless and exciting.” ■

Wedding Food How to feed your guests without stressing yourself or your bank account THREE’S CATERING 808-633-6497 Threescatering@hotmail.com
S
ure, you want to feed your guests the most amazing spread Maui has to offer. This sounds daunting, but it might be easier than you think. We asked Chef Travis Morrin of Three’s Catering how you can have your coconut shrimp and eat them, too, at your reception. You might be surprised at his answers which include a sample menu, wedding planner advice and rolling up in a food truck. MAUITIME: Tell us five things we don’t know about planning food at a wedding. TRAVIS MORRIN: First, have a coordinator. Too many times I’ve seen brides and moms try to plan their own weddings and end up stressing themselves out and don’t enjoy their wedding day. Leave the planning and execution to the professionals and enjoy your day. Second, try to choose a location that’s not gonna break the bank. You’re already getting married on Maui. Just about everywhere you go is gonna be beautiful. Try somewhere in South Maui to avoid the chance of rain. Third, plan your wedding before it’s too late. Allow yourself at least six months to carefully plan and seek out exactly what you envision. Rushed weddings are stressed weddings.
Fourth, stay within budget. It’s okay not to offer filet mignon and lobster tails. Weddings are to celebrate the couple’s commitment and future together, not about having the most glamorous show. And fifth, don’t stress it. It’s just a wedding, we’ve all been to many of them. Enjoy your day and don’t sweat the small stuff. MT: What’s the secret to planning a wedding menu? TM: Don’t get caught up in the little stuff. It’s virtually impossible to please everyone at your event because everyone has different diet restrictions. Be mindful of those with allergies or gluten intolerances but don’t worry too much about not having something for absolutely everyone. It’s just gonna create headache and stress for you. I also recommend to brides to spread out the diversity of menu items throughout the whole event and not just in the main course. For example: Cocktail hour: Coconut shrimp (seafood), BBQ kalua pork quesadilla (pork), multigrain toast point, guacamole, tomato mint relish (vegetarian) Main: edemame crusted mahi (fish), kalbi marinated flat iron (steak), mac nut crusted chicken (chicken) Side: Molokai purple potato mash, Asian ratatouille. This menu offers something for everyone. The key is balance in your menu. Don’t forget that if you’re visiting Maui for the wedding, you and your guests will
most likely be eating a lot of fish already. Don’t worry too much if you don’t offer it as the main. Sometimes you just wanna eat steak and chicken, and that is okay. MT: What if I want to be trendy at my wedding? TM: Current trends are going organic, or focusing the menu on local and sustainable foods. These farm-to-table menu concepts give couples and guests a real opportunity to taste the location. A big trend nowadays is having truck roll up and serve the whole event casual food truck fare. From fries to tacos to steak and seafood trucks can offer it all. Food trucks are naturally fun and more casual. Lots of brides like this approach. It’s fun and interactive for the guests. MT: Do you also provide servers? What about gratuity? TM: Threes Cantering is a full service catering company. Meaning we not only offer killer grinds but can include servers, rentals (China, flatware, glassware, tables, chairs and linen), bar service with bar setup and liquor permit and chefs. All for an inclusive price of $85 per person. When you’re researching your caterer specify your needs, some may provide full service, others may work with a network of other businesses they recommend. As for gratuity, it’s a standard 18 to 20 percent in the industry. Expect to pay this and to calculate it into your overall or per person budget. No surprises is the best way to go. ■
Hand-Crafted Shoes If The Shoe Fits can help any wedding foot need IF THE SHOE FITS 21 N. Market St., Wailuku 808-249-9710
I
f Cinderella were planning her own wedding, Teri Edmonds would be her shoe advisor. The lady behind Wailuku’s If the Shoe Fits and Maui Shoe Academy is also the island’s self-proclaimed Shoe Queen. She’s been hand-crafting shoes at her studio for seven years, as well as hand-dying, repairing and customizing footwear. She also carries a line of formal footwear for proms, weddings and gala events and can fit feet from sizes 5 to 15. No joke, she can make custom footwear for ample-sized and hard to fit feet. “I can perform minor surgery to san-
dals to make them fit,” says Edmonds. “We carry big sizes, up to 13 but I will hand craft sizes 14 to 16. Often a big concern for brides is having their heels sink in sand and grass at their outdoor event. There are lots of different options to battle that, even heel caps named Starlettos and Soulmates that I sell here.” Edmonds is always discovering new ways to deck out your feet, and my latest visit to her store found her recommending all sorts of options for wedding footwear, from woven leather beaded embellishments that can tie over bare feet to adding hand-painted silk flowers to hand-dyed sandals, with sparkly rhinestones. In this shoe studio, if you can dream it, she can put it on your shoe.
Remember, wedding shoes are certainly not just your average white satin anymore. They can add a pop of color to your white wedding, and the white wedding is not the only standard anymore. “I have a seven-day turnaround for hand-dyed shoes,” says Edmonds. “I can do multiple colors, ombre and watercolor styles, too. To match your color, bring in a shade sample–even a paint card from the hardware store is fine. You can also bring your own flowers and rhinestones that you want on your shoe. I can dye them to match and attach. And here’s a great tip, too: no matter what color you decide to dye for your big day, we can always dye them black later to make them your favorite evening wear shoes!” ■

Advice for getting a DJ
Top 10 beauty secrets
Y
ou want music at your wedding, but for obvious reasons, you don’t just want to hook up your favorite iPod mix. Hiring a DJ means your reception dance will go off without a hitch, and your Uncle Buck won’t have to stand in as your emcee either. Meet with your DJ to decide on a playlist and the details.Your DJ can also provide the sound system and visual entertainment to go along with the tunes. We asked a few Maui DJs for their insight on being the life of the wedding party: Why should I hire a DJ? A wedding DJ becomes a unique component of your wedding celebration because she is interacting directly with all of your family and friends for hours. You want to take the time to interview several DJs to really get a feel for their personality, style, professionalism, experience and overall vibe, to make sure that you are all a good match. If you’re off-island, you should definitely have a phone interview or even a Skype call to meet your future DJ. Budget is always an important factor in planning your wedding. But if you’re only choosing a DJ because of their price, you might be disappointed because the motto of “you get what you pay for” could come back and haunt you. We’ve all been to weddings or events where we’ve felt sorry for the organizers, cringed at the music and wanted the cheesy DJ to stop yapping. You want your wedding day to be the most magical day of your lives, so my advice is to take your time, enjoy the process and get to know your DJ ahead of time. A great wedding DJ knows that her job is to make the bride and groom shine on their special day and keep the party upbeat and flowing smoothly. - Valerie Sapourn How do I shop for a DJ? To find a personality and price that work for you, check WeddingWire.com (Martha Stewart’s wedding network) to see DJs profiles and reviews. You can also ask other wedding vendors who they like to use. Be careful choosing just the cheapest DJ out there, because things can go wrong like the sound system doesn’t work properly or they show
up late or not at all. Also, check if they’re insured to avoid nightmares. It’s best to stick with the professional DJs that are well established and have many good reviews. - Adrian Blackhurst Am I limited to your music collection? With today’s technology, I’m so excited to buy and play any genre of music, according to each couple’s preferences. In the old days of vinyl, I was limited by how many 50-pound record boxes I could lug to each gig. Now, the sky’s the limit. I specialize in magical weddings and creative corporate events but I love celebrating life with people from all over the world by sharing incredible music from all genres and decades. - Valerie Sapourn Is it okay to give you a Do Not Play list? Always! I take pride in being a DJ that caters 100 percent to what the clients and the people at the event would like to hear. I take requests and always make sure I’m playing for everybody, not myself. Sometimes clients give me a Do Not Play list, which can avoid the songs or styles they do not like. -Adrian Blackhurst Can you provide other entertainment and visuals at my wedding? Definitely. Couples are always looking for ways to make their reception unique and memorable. Adding custom video projections and artistic lighting is a fantastic way to create a wedding that will be talked about by friends and family for decades to come. I collaborate with a great company called Event Horizon Audiovisual Services to deliver stunning visuals and amazing lighting. Because of my background with Valerie and the Vibe Tribe, I love to offer couples ways to enhance their celebrations by adding fire dancers, aerialists, belly dancers, stilt walkers and musicians. I partner with the best performers on the island to create the best wedding ever! - Valerie Sapourn DJ VALERIE 808-633-8015 mauidjvalerie.com djvalerie@mauidjvalerie.com ADRIAN BLACKHURST 808-463-5856 MauiBeats.com ■
A
bridal beauty plan is easy breezy with our Top Ten list of must-have beauty products, which come courtesy of Katie Matthews at Wailea’s Cos Bar. At Cos Bar, you can try out the trusted and true brands that you can’t find elsewhere on island weeks before your big day. Their makeup stylists can assist in your perfect look, and they welcome any magazine tear sheets, iPhone photos or other notes you might have. If you want them on location at your big day, they can arranged that, too. Also, see about getting your hair done at Sisters and Co., which is also located at the Shops at Wailea. That way, you can book back-to-back appointments to see how your hair and makeup look together way before your nuptials. Remember, says Matthews, “a girl’s best beauty tip is her smile.” 1. Every bride should begin her at home beauty routine four weeks out, starting with an at-home peel or mask, depending on her skin type. My favorites are Sisley Rose Mask for plumping and firming dry skin and Revives Glycolic at home peels for speedy cellular renewal and retexturizing to give your skin a glow. 2. Same goes for the body. A bride should be using a gentle, yet effective, body exfoliant one to two times a week followed by a rich body moisturizer. Bliss makes amazing hot salt scrubs and body polishes with scents like Vanilla Bergamont, Blood Orange, grapefruit and sage in their body butters. 3. Eye Cream, Eye Cream, Eye Cream. Can’t stress this enough. This is because planning a wedding can lead to many late nights surfing the Internet, stress and fatigue. The first signs of neglect appear in the eye area. My favorite YSL–Youth Liberator eye Serum–targets wrinkles, dark circles, puffiness and lack of radiance. 4. Speak to your artist about what foundation texture and finish you’re most comfortable in. Where you will be getting married? Indoors, outdoors and time of day are all are factors you should consider. As a side note: if your foundation has sunscreen in it, make sure your artist uses a bronze to lightly
dust over the foundation or you might get a kick back from the flash of the camera interfering with the SPF. 5. Choosing the right concealer can make the difference between looking blah and ahhh! Choose a concealer corrector combo like those from Bobbi Brown. She makes pink/peach corrector colors to bring the dark purple shadows back to flesh tone. Then you can then use the correct color concealer to brighten. With out the corrector step, concealers can look ashy. 6. I like Laura Mercier’s Secret Finish Loose powder. It creates a sheer photo focus air brush effect, softening any harsh lines and imperfections. 7. Blush should be a natural flushed look, like you just took a long beach walk. The industry favorite NARS Orgasm is great because it looks good on all skin tones and the name alone can make you blush. 8. Eye Brows are a must, even if you’ve never filled them in. A light shaping will give a completed look to the rest of the face. If your eyes are the windows to the soul, then the brows are the accents. Try the Laura Mercier Brow pencils–they’re easy to use, not too heavy looking and come in wide range of colors. 9. Water Proof Mascara: Let’s face it, there will be tears of joy so secure your perfect makeup job by using a waterproof mascara to keep smeared eye makeup from running down your face. Estee Lauder and YSL make some of the best. 10. Choose a lip color that is one to two shades brighter then your natural lip color. The way to test this is to swatch a few color options on the tips of your fingers, which are closer to your natural lip color than the back of your hand. Choose a long last lipstick like YSL longlast Glossy Stain Tattoo; they’ve been flying off the shelf. Brides and customers alike are loving the silky, smooth texture paired with the LONG last, smudgeproof/kiss-proof staying formula. ■

Bridal Bouquets They’re not just for plague protection anymore
S
ome wedding traditions are newer than you think. For instance, diamond wedding rings are a 20th century thing. But wedding bouquets aren’t new. In fact, clutching bound bunches of dill and garlic were thought to protect brides from the plague many centuries ago. Since the era of inoculations, brides have been toting more aromatic displays of flowers, but the meanings of the flowers themselves harken back
to Victorian days. Back then, sending flowers conveyed hidden meanings. The latest trend in wedding bouquets has been to make them out of other objects off affection, that are longerlasting than flowers. Samantha Howard, a designer at Wings Hawaii, says she’s been making bouquets of antique lace that can take up to three weeks of work. Other bouquets of beads, silk flowers or shells are also popular. ■
Here’s what your bouquet says about you: Calla Lily: Regal Rose: Joy Orchid: Beauty Lily: Honor Mums: Wealth
Freesia: Innocence Ginger: Exotic Hibiscus: Delicate Tuberose: Pleasure Jasmine: Grace

Getting Hitched Hitched on Maui takes island weddings into the world of mobile apps
N
ew technology launches on Maui are exciting, and the development of the iPhone and iPad app Hitched on Maui is no exception. Scott Johnson of Dogtown Design (a former MauiTime art director), and Sean M. Hower of Hower Photos (who currently takes photos for MauiTime) decided to create a resource guide for weddings on Maui like no other. Looking it over, one of the first things that struck me was how much information they packed into their download. There are travel tips, honeymoon guides, information on where to get wedding garments, catering, locations, invitations and more. Whether you’re planning a big destination wedding or an intimate vow renewal, Hitched on Maui has a plethora of ideas and contacts for you. I caught up with publisher Scott Johnson to find out more behind the making of Maui’s newest nuptial app. MAUITIME: How difficult was it to put this issue together? SCOTT JOHNSON: The first issue was very difficult to put together, as this was a new business we created and getting a sales person and the writers together was difficult. We were basically a small crew taking on several roles. A lot of great people within the wedding community stepped up as contributors in their area of expertise and really helped round out the format of Hitched (from wedding coordinators, to photographers, to travel and accommodation specialists, to Teri Edmonds who knows more about shoes then anyone on the planet). I’ve been designing magazines for 18 years, and I watched this industry drastically
change about three years ago. For me this new world of magazine design is so fun–to watch a page come alive and talk or interact with you is so gratifying. Print and web cannot do what apps can, and it keeps evolving. The app build on the other hand was very stressful, but fortunately I have a good friend who’s a specialist in this area. Michelle
Halcomb really helped with the initial build all the way from Amsterdam. She h helped A t d Sh l d so much h we recently hired her and now Michelle is helping us take this to another level. The best part about this is working with my best friends and watching this small family grow with passionate people. And also knowing that we aren’t destroying
forests. Most of the paper used for all these glossy visitor magazines is a toxic paper biproduct that just ends up in our landfill. MT: Tell me about this format. It’s filled with little extras that pop out and beautiful art design features that make it gorgeous to look at. SJ: This format is created with Adobe digital publishing software. Martha Stewart, Adobe and Apple created this because Martha Stewart was seeing the future of publishing
transition into a digital marketplace. Conde Nast soon following with all of their magazines. We can now make a magazine come alive and interact with you–it’s like the Harry Potter newspaper. Also, more and more readers are now reading on their mobile devices. The functionality on the phones is the same as the tablets, which is really fun on such a small screen. It’s highly
immersive, video and audio are amazing on it, the retina screens are adding amazing visuals. Being app-based, it’s offline, meaning there’s no need for the Internet and you can take it anywhere. These features are very important to our readers. Future brides want to see the details, hear advice and have immediate interaction with what they’re viewing. Hitched is not a PDF flip book, which is what you mainly find in the app newsstand or Issuu. com. Another cool thing is the social media interaction with everything in the app. Hitched on Maui has social sharing on every page, which is very important to brides. MT: What’s in store for the next Hitched? SJ: The next issue, which launches this month, will be different because we will now be on all devices. Getting into the large Android market and the smart phone market is very important. We also have added a lot of video content. Sean and I film and Michelle edits, so we’re adding little movies and brand films to the next issue. When has someone ever been able to advertise for a videography company in a magazine. Ads can become short commercials. Also, look out for Hitched on Oahu in the near future! MT: What’s the philosophy behind Hitched on Maui? SJ: We are a vehicle to take Maui’s wedding industry and stories to a global market, where tablets and mobile devices are growing by the millions. Also, we dedicate every issue of Hitched to our good buddy Rodger Shortell. He was a big part of what we were doing and we miss him very much. ■

Father Doesn’t Know Best ‘Endless Love’ is a bad remake of a bad film Endless Love ★★★★★ Rated PG13 / 103 Min.
O
nce upon a time, back in 1981, there was a travesty of a movie called Endless Love. It starred Brooke Shields as a 15-year old girl named Jade who falls in love with a much older teen named David, played by Martin Hewitt. Jade’s parents, being open-minded hippies, approve of the relationship at first, until it’s clear that Jade is terminally smitten and David, for all his smoldering good looks, is a stalker. Jade’s parents keep David from seeing their daughter, which only drives him over the edge. In arguably the film’s most bizarre scene, David gets advice from a random teen on how setting fire to the girl’s house and saving her could improve his standing with her parents. The teen providing this horrible advice is–in his film debut–played by a squeaky-voiced, jean shorts wearing Tom Cruise. I have to hand it to the original film: it’s terrible but the bad choices it makes are interesting and I’ve never
forgotten it. It was also hugely successful, because Shields was a top model and her previous movie, The Blue Lagoon, was also a smash (and equally idiotic). The title song, which continues to be an FM soft rock staple, maintains its enormous popularity. The 2014 remake of Endless Love is also bad but mostly irritating and utterly forgettable. The perverse touches that made the original intriguingly misguided are gone. Instead of it being about a crazy teen boy loving an underage girl, the issue is now that he’s poor and she’s rich. Also, the new David is obsessed but meant to be the hero, while Jade’s overly attentive father is now the crazy one. From the first scene, this rehash doesn’t work. We open with Jade and David’s graduation: I assumed it was from college, since everyone one in the cast looks about 30. The “teens” all appear and sound like California model-turned-actors, despite the film taking place in Georgia. David is now played by the pretty but empty Alex Pettyfer, who, after this and I Am Number Four and Beastly, needs to fire his agent. Ditto Gabriella Wilde as Jade, who is as pleasant but unmem-
Ewww, morning breath...
orable here as she was in the Carrie remake. I don’t mean to come across as unkind but seriously, young actors: stay away from remakes! The screenplay has been fashioned to resemble The Notebook as much as possible, with the wealthy characters predictably snooty and cruel, while the poor folks are all salt of the earth types. Even Dirty Dancing made all this seem fresher. Playing Jade’s mean ole’ dad is Bruce Greenwood, a versatile actor in a thankless position. Greenwood can’t seem to figure out if his loony Father Knows Best is villainous, tragic, misguided or simply sleep deprived. Playing his wife is Joely Richardson, whose character is maddeningly indecisive about everything that
happens. Gone is the unsettling attraction the mother had for David in the original. Instead, Joely has... um, nothing, at all, to convey except for confusion. The one semblance of sanity in this nuthouse is Robert Patrick, playing David’s father and the film’s only clearheaded character. Otherwise, I felt bad for the actors, even as their characters thoroughly annoyed me. There’s a fire in the remake, too, but how it starts is lame and what transpires is a dramatic change of heart for a main character that’s impossible to buy. The cherry atop the cake for this exercise in contempt for its’ audience: the best thing in the original was the song. In the remake, we never get to hear it. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Watch The Fly, because it’s a perfect example of how a tiny inconsistency, imperfection, or error can blow up into a huge catastrophe this week. Disaster is wholly avoidable—but will require extra effort, care, and attention. On the flip side, while you’re diligently sitting on every molehill to keep it from swelling into a mountain, you can take advantage of the magnifying tendency of this week’s cosmic influences—because it works positively as well as negatively. That means every miniscule good deed you do brings you one giant step closer to sainthood, and every diminutive act of creativity (even something as silly as a doodle on a sticky-note) could balloon into a phenomenal opus, almost without any effort from you. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Ownership is a screwy concept amongst you Rams. Almost without realizing, you start thinking that you own things like your lover’s genitalia or your dog, or kids. Legalities aside, you at best have these things on a multiyear renewable lease; in other words, they’re only “yours” as long as you make your payments and keep them in good shape. In these and most cases, those disbursements don’t involve money; they’re about care, attention, and affection. Don’t take anything for granted. You’re behind on your payments; you might want to write a big check this week to fend off any outside claims. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Humor mitigates tragedy. That’s the lesson of the week—although you hopefully won’t suffer any major calamities, you will have ample opportunity to practice effective combinations of silliness and seriousness. Pay attention; this could be one of your principal social talents, if you choose to develop it. Only Bulls consistently possess the right amalgamation of wit and wisdom to do this properly, as well as the awareness that to lead a happy life you must develop the ability to laugh in the face of despair. Since you can help so many desperate people do that, you’d be wicked not to. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
You’re more wise ass than wise, usually, but you’re still too smart to openly defy the overzealous authority figures currently encroaching on your personal space. However, you’re cunning enough to know that there are ways to screw someone over, even when you can’t shake your fist in his face or kick some ass. Nevertheless, resist those tiny opportunities for vengeance and rebellion. They may feel good in the short term, but they’re hardly long-term solutions. You’ll only glimpse your next opportunity for a much more profound, lasting, and positive form of reckoning if your eyes aren’t riveted to petty concerns. Don’t worry. They’ll get theirs, and you’ll get yours. Just be patient. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Your heart is sometimes as unfaltering, patient and thorough as a pointer, one of those dogs who’ll find his hunter’s kill, stand perfectly still, and wait for it to be retrieved. You’d like to forget the prey fallen by the wayside after your recent unwilling depredations, but something inside you is quietly insisting you notice what you’ve done, and do something about your victim. What you do is up to you. The way I see it, you could nurse it back to health; or finish it off, eat it, and make its bones into jewelry. It’s your call.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Torture, for a Virgo, is throwing out your back. Suddenly, you can’t do anything for yourself; you’re required to depend on everyone around you while you lay as flat and still as possible—and nothing gets done quite how you like it. Yes, it’s about time you realized: you’re high maintenance (but take consolation in the fact that under normal circumstances, you’re quite good at maintaining yourself). Since you have some slack-time this week—and a fully functioning back—set things up so that next time you’re laid out, you’re not too put out. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
A nudge won’t do. Even a swift kick in the ass might not be enough. So I’m going to do my full-on best to shove you towards decisiveness. For two months you’ve been contemplating an admittedly tremendous leap of faith. But we’re sick of watching you sway on the edge of that abyss. Jump, already, or go back to the couch and watch some more TV. It’s time to finally shit or get off the pot. Make your decision this week, please. It’ll feel so good to finally commit, that living with your choice will be no sweat, I swear. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
You sadistic sweetheart. Everyone knows what the sadist within you is like at his/her worst. But at subtle, slightly restrained and conscious best, you’re wonderful to be around, because you challenge and push boundaries. People tend to rise to those challenges, and end up far less limited than they were before your crafty, delicate torture began. Only an idiot would suggest you try to eliminate your tenderly brutal impulses, because it’s both impossible and ridiculously unnecessary. However, curbing them is in order. It’s the same lesson you’ve had to learn again and again: healer and destroyer are simply two sides of your coin. It’s your call which way it lands.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Everyone has moments of horrified realization: “I’ve become my mother!” “I have too many cats; I’m turning into the neighborhood crazy lady!” “I’m 30 and I’ve never had a serious relationship.” Sagittarians generally lead an enviably carefree existence. You let most shit roll off your back. The problem with that attitude is that when the scary stuff strikes, it really nails you. Not that you should start worrying about everything, like those chronically concerned Cancers. But when you have a moment or three, like you will this week, start asking yourself those hard questions so you won’t be floored by the answers when they finally hit. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Spring Break is here early this year, for you Goats. Time to get silly, adventurous, and—if at all possible— downright wild. Capricorns, as a rule, tend to be overly serious, especially when it comes to relationships. Have a fling. Better yet—have three, four, or more. Have your cake, eat it too, then go back for cookies and ice cream. This is the best week in months to indulge your deepest, most repressed Dionysian urges. You can go back to your monkish good behavior next week, but please, take a long weekend to let loose. Engage in activity worthy of any Girls Gone Wild video. You never know when (and if) you’ll get your next chance. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Leos, despite their imperiousness and inflated sense of entitlement, are rarely hubristic. You can usually remember how silly you are, even while dishing out orders (for everyone’s good, of course). But this week you are in danger of subtly crossing a line that you’d probably prefer to stay on this side of. Remind yourself, any way you can, that while you’re the sovereign ruler of your own little kingdom, you’re hardly a god. Harping on your imperfections is never a good idea, but remembering them might be in order this week. So don your crown, but before you do, inscribe it with this gentle self-admonishment: “Needs improvement.”
Soccer, when I was eight, was a daunting experience; I was terrorized by the prospect of getting hit in the face by the ball. Consequently, that happened to me more than to anyone else on the team. I didn’t know it, but I was unconsciously manifesting exactly what I feared. By cringing and hesitating instead of unflinchingly approaching the ball, I positioned myself perfectly to get nailed in the face when a bolder player kicked it. You are just like my preadolescent self: you’re setting yourself up for exactly what you most dread. Don’t ignore or repress your fear. Instead, bravely run towards it and kick it as hard as you can.
