JURY RULES OLD HALEAKALA TRAIL IS PUBLICLY OWNED So it turns out that the public owns the historic old Haleakala Trail after all. Since early 2011, the nonprofit group Public Access Trails Hawaii (PATH) has been fighting to reopen that trail, which was already in place when the Mahele took place in 1848 and introduced the concept of private land ownership to Hawaii. In her 2012 book Haleakala, author Jill Engledow described the trail in some detail: “The original trail began in Makawao near St. Joseph’s Church, continued uphill on what is now Pi‘iholo Road to the junction of Pi‘iholo and Olinda, then continued over what is now Haleakala Ranch land and Haleakala National Park land to the crater rim, where it descended and eventually led to Kaupo.” In fact, a little over three miles of the trail lie in Haleakala Ranch land, and therein lies the problem. PATH wants that section–indeed, the whole trail–open to the public, but the ranch refused. So three years ago PATH went to court to prove that the trail was public before it was private. Yesterday, a six-week trial ended with a jury verdict saying that, yeah, PATH had proved its case. “The court victory today should be celebrated by anyone who wants to recognize, preserve and protect Hawaii’s unique and rich cultural past, including Hawaii’s historical trails,” PATH Executive Director David Brown said in an Apr. 23 news release from his organization. Of course, as The Maui News pointed out in its Apr. 24 story, the issue of public access to the trail remains an open question. “We will remain in talks with the state about that,” PATH attorney Tom Pierce said in The Maui News article.

NATURE CONSERVANCY GETS HUGE GIFT Guess this is just a time of good land preservation news. On Apr. 24, The Nature Conservancy announced that Alexander & Baldwin’s subsidiary East Maui Irrigation Co. had agreed to donate 3,721 acres of undeveloped Upcountry rainforest. “This area has been one of The Nature Conservancy’s highest priorities for more than two decades,” said Mark White, the Conservancy’s Maui Nui program director, in the news release. “The land lies at the core of the 100,000-acre East Maui watershed and is one of the most intact pieces of native forest in the state.” But don’t expect a lot of public access–we’re talking land preservation here. According to the Conservancy, the donated land is “entirely undeveloped” and “shares a seven-mile border with the Nature Conservancy’s 5,230-acre Waikamoi Preserve.” The land is also home to “20 threatened or endangered native plants, and to two exceedingly rare native forest birds:

Watching the Maui County Council interact with Mayor Alan Arakawa these days, sometimes you wonder if they would ever agree on anything, including the time of sunset or the number of days left before the 2014 election. So it was actually nice over the weekend to see that members of the council who’ve largely disagreed with the Arakawa Administration for the last two years–over such matters as the demolition of the old Wailuku Post Office and the mayor’s recent proposed property tax rate increases– have found common ground. I’m speaking of course about the state Legislature’s last-minute vote to restore a small portion of the Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) monies to Hawaii’s counties. Before 2010, each of the state’s counties received about 44.8 percent of the tax revenues levied on hotel rooms. But after that year, the state–hobbled by massive budget problems and huge unfunded pension obligations–grabbed up a huge portion of that money, reducing the County of Maui’s take to just 22.8 percent. This year, the County of Maui–as well as Kauai and Hawaii–had hoped to get its share returned to the old 44.8 percentage. But that didn’t even come close to happening, though the Legislature did vote to kick back an additional $20 million to the counties over the next two years. “Personally, the news about the TAT was highly disappointing to me,” Arakawa said in a press release an assistant sent out on Apr. 26. “My staff and I have had dozens of faceto-face meetings with state legislators here and on Oahu, even before the start of the session, to lobby our position. These really are county monies and should go towards paying for the wear and tear our islands endure when you host millions of visitors every year.

This amount is below even the minimum that we thought we would get. The other county mayors and I all strongly supported removing the cap completely and still do.” According to the Apr. 26 Maui News, Councilman Mike White–perhaps Arakawa’s greatest adversary on the council–was in agreement. “It’s very disappointing because the state, over the last two years, has collected approximately $250 million more than they would have had the changes not been made to the calculations,” White’s quoted as saying. “The impact directly to Maui is that we’ve received $28 million less than we would have over the past two years.” Still, the Legislature’s tiny TAT concession might hold good news for the county after all. “Nevertheless, I believe that with these extra TAT monies, along with some creative cuts from the council, we should be able to eliminate any need for a property tax increase for fiscal year 2015,” Arakawa said in his Apr. 26 email. “We have made some informal

What the Nature Conservancy gets

suggestions to the council as to which projects should be delayed in order to find the money they need to do this.” Of course, that would require the council and mayor to do more than simply agree that the state is being miserly with their money–they’d actually have to work together, which would be something to see.

Overheard “I thought you punched that in. I got a dirty knee for nothing.” -Guy at a Ka’anapali resort bar, Apr. 27

the ‘akohehoke, or crested honeykeeper; and the kiwikiu, or Maui parrotbill.” Also, all’s apparently not well in the donated land. In fact, the Conservancy says that a range of invasive species, including feral pigs, cattle, strawberry guava, Himalayan ginger and pampas grass pose dangers to the native species there. For that reason, the Conservancy is already talking about fencing some of it in. “The first conservation move is to establish a three-mile, $600,000 fence to block pig and cattle access on EMI land,” White said in the news release. “One mile of fence has already been constructed with funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, State Department of Health and Maui County Department of Water Supply. The fence protects a 12,000-acre core area that includes the majority of Waikamoi and part of the EMI easement, and will now be managed to help stop the degradation that is starting to occur.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

News Of The Weird CANADIAN SEX CHANNELS NOT SUFFICIENTLY CANADIAN The Canadian Radio-television & Telecommunications Commission in March reprimanded three pornography broadcast stations–not for excessively erotic fare, but for violating Canada’s protectionist, patriotic rules requiring that at least 35 percent of all content be of Canadian origin. According to its notice, the 24-hour AOV Adult Movie Channel, XXX Action Clips and Maleflixxx were falling short of the 8 1/2 hours a day of north-of-the-border sex action (and, in an additional charge, were failing to provide enough closed captioning to accompany the “Yeah’s” and “Oh, baby’s”).

DRUNK LOGIC Wendy Simpson, 25, explaining her DUI arrest during a March incident in Huddersfield, England, pointed out that she had just minutes earlier walked to a McDonald’s for a late-night meal because she knew she was too inebriated to drive. But the dining room was closed, and she was refused service at the drive-thru window because she was on foot, and, she said, the only option left for her was to go home, get her car and return to the drive-thru. On the way back, she was arrested.

JUST CANVASSING THE VOTERS Efren Carrillo, a member of the board of supervisors of California’s Sonoma County, was charged with misdemeanor “peeking” last year in Santa Rosa after he, returning home from a club late at night, saw his female neighbor’s light on and decided to drop in on her (though he did not even know her name). He had knocked at her back patio door, carrying beers, but was dressed awkwardly, leading the woman to call 911. “In retrospect,” the county supervisor told police afterward, “I should have had my pants on” (instead of just his socks and underwear). His trial was underway at press time.

THE SEXY DEFENSE Among the arguments offered in March by Darrious Mathis’ lawyers for his jury trial in Cobb County, Georgia, (for assault, kidnapping and carjacking) was the assertion that Mathis needed no force in order to have sex with the female victim on the night in question–because Mathis is such a good-looking man. The jury was not so dazzled and convicted him on all charges.

IRONY England’s Stockport magistrates’ court levied the equivalent of a $13,000 fine in March against Lorraine White, 41, who runs a part-time service as a dominatrix (chaining up and whipping “bad” men) in a “sex dungeon.” Her business is apparently

perfectly legal; the citation was for violating fire codes because inspectors could not see how a client, being properly disciplined (handcuffed and chained), might escape the dungeon in the event of fire.

SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE The Food and Drug Administration has had run-ins with “homeopathic” products that subtly market themselves as health remedies without ever having sought the required FDA approval. However, in March, a different problem arose, requiring the agency to order a recall of 56 different batches of homeopathic remedies made by the Ferndale, Washington, company Terra-Medica–because they may have (accidentally) been genuine medicine. A variety of the firm’s capsules, tablets and suppositories, said the FDA, might have contained actual penicillin, inadvertently produced as a by-product of fermentation.

HOSTILE WORKOUT PLACE Tiffany Austin called a KTVU reporter in March after being dismissed as a member of the Planet Fitness Gym in Richmond, California, after only one 15-minute workout–because she was “too fit” and therefore making other members uncomfortable. Planet Fitness apparently takes seriously its business slogan guaranteeing “no gymtimidation,” designed to keep out-of-shape women from feeling bad about themselves. Said another member, to the reporter, “It’s unfair to show off your body.”

OUR LITIGIOUS SOCIETY A columnist for the Egyptian newspaper Al-Yawm Al-Sabi proposed in March that Egypt sue Israel in international court for reparations for the 10 Biblical plagues cast from Hebrew curses, including boils, lice, locusts and turning the Nile River into blood. Ahmad al-Gamal asserted that Israelites swiped gold, silver and other precious items as they began their legendary desert wandering. Al-Gamal also wants reparations from Turkey (for the 16thcentury Ottoman invasion), France (for Napoleon’s invasion in 1798), and Britain (for 72 years of occupation).

HOTTEST GOLF INJURY EVER A California model, Elizabeth Dickson, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles in March against Playboy Enterprises for an injury she suffered as a guest on a Playboy Channel cable TV show in 2012 when she allowed host Kevin Klein to tee a golf ball off of her rear end. According to the $500,000 lawsuit, Klein took a swing at the ball that was teed between her cheeks, missed, and struck her buttocks hard, causing her “pain, suffering, worrying and anxiety.” ■

o the person or persons stealing from roadside mailboxes in Kula: I’m sorry your life is going so badly. I will miss the Tahitian black pearl with puka shell on a leather cord which was sent to me for a special year. I’m sure whoever received my gift from you was thrilled… until they read how you obtained it. You even took parcel notices and claimed them at the Post office for yourself. A FEW NOTES ABOUT BALLOT STUFFING:

We know you hold the key to the BEST OF MAUI. It’s your year round perseverance and diligent research on where to eat, where to play, the best shops on the island, and which political scandal takes the cake for 2014. The time you have been waiting for is finally here. Cast your vote for your favorite shops, restaurants and community highlights in the MauiTime Best of Maui and be heard! As usual, categories are organized into five sections: arts & entertainment; food & drink; goods & services; politics & environment; and sports & leisure. Voting otin ng g ends May 31.

While most people play it straight, every year a few nefarious folks attempt to stuff the ballot box. To cut down on this, and to ensure the results are fair and accurate, here are a few rules:

★ ONLY ONE (1) BALLOT PER PERSON ★ ALL BALLOTS MUST BE SIGNED ★ NO PHOTOCOPIED BALLOTS WILL BE ACCEPTED

★ MULTIPLE BALLOTS IN THE SAME HANDWRITING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

★ BALLOTS MUST BE MAILED IN; NO MORE THAN THREE (3) BALLOTS PER ENVELOPE. ENVELOPES MUST HAVE A RETURN ADDRESS

★ EACH ONLINE BALLOT MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A VALID NAME & E-MAIL ADDRESS

You may also notice these convenient ie en nt little QR codes throughout the ballot llo ott that you can scan with your smart phone at any time to take you to our online ballot.

Any ballots that violate these rules—or that sufficiently rouse our suspicion— will not be tallied. We hope it isn’t necessary, but if anyone does attempt to unfairly sway the outcome, we reserve the right to create a Best Ballot Stuffer category. This is not something you want to win—trust us.

YOU MUST FILL OUT 40 CATEGORIES FOR YOUR VOTE TO COUNT! NOTE: In categories with the LOCAL stamp, only votes for locally owned businesses will be counted; no corporate chains. Big Taste, Small Plates Sugar Cane Maui offers an eclectic and delicious tapas menu SUGAR CANE MAUI 736 Front St., Lahaina 808-214-6662 Sugarcanemaui.com

T

apas is a fairly new term in Hawaii, but it’s quite popular in Mainland dining. It’s a lot like pupus but the culture of the cuisine is a bit different. While pupus means appetizer or a starter, assuming you follow up with an entree, tapas are just a feast of small plates or “snacks.” Tapas menus are a list of mix-and-match options that you can share with friends, or devour by yourself. Sugar Cane Maui recently jumped on the tapas bandwagon with a huge se-

plates are designed to be shared over drinks, fun happy time and conversation.” Ahh, the bacon croquettes. They’re delicious balls of wasabi mash, pankocrusted and nestled into a healthy dollop of bacon jam, then topped with a piece of exquisite bacon. They’re pretty to look at and even better to eat. Of course, Chin doesn’t ostracize the veg heads, and the menu has more than just pomme frittes for the non meat eaters. There’s a verdant feast of sumptuous veggie dishes on the tapas list: Szechwan green beans, bok choy, Portobellos, grilled pineapple, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, grilled Molokai purple potatoes and edamame. For those who don’t want something so rich, the Hana pohole fern salad is

our pineapple fried rice.” The tapas dishes have enough to share and most are in the $5 to $7 range, the rest in the $8 to $11. They’re served from 11am until they close. After 8pm, they have a late night tapas happy hour with them 50 percent off for the rest of the evening. You can also sample Chin’s food with his Sunset pre-fixe menu for $24, or his five-course tasting menu at $75. Sugar Cane opens at 8am and is

located across the sea wall in Lahaina. Kama’aina get 20 percent off entrees. Sugar Cane also offers happy hour daily, from 2:30pm to 5:30pm with drink specials like $3 Steinlager draft, $4 Coastal Chardonnay and Merlot, $5 Mai Tai and $6 Lanai island tea. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

They come courtesy of Chef Philippe Chen, a master chef from France who’s a hapa Chinese-French expat from the East Coast culinary scene. Meandering through the tapas menu is a tasty excursion that you can start anytime after 11am, which is when they start serving them. Each mini-dish has the special accoutrement that you’d expect from Chin: house-made bacon fixed into jam, deconstructed fusion, port gelee, pomegranate vinaigrette, smoked sea salt. “My favorite tapas are the Brussels sprouts, pohole salad, pot stickers, prawn skewer, crab beignet and, of course, the bacon croquettes,” says Chin. “All small

Many of the 20-plus tapas on the menu are new twists on familiar favorites. The Crab Beignet is a small-size fritter of Kula corn and choke crab. It’s nearly a crab cake but in new form is positioned with saffron aioli. The standard steakhouse wedge salad with bleu cheese dressing gets re-imagined as a lettuce cup. “Faux Gras” is Sugar Cane’s chicken liver pate topped in port gelee and served in a jar with their foccacia. “You don’t get more French than that,” says Chin. “Our own house-made Portuguese sausage served at breakfast is used in

It's Cinco De Maui, Gabachos! Drinking shots is the best way to honor 150-year-old Mexican military victories

G

iven the attention we pay on the U.S. Border Patrol, Mexico has a proud history of quashing invasions. On May 5, 1862, they kicked the French out on their fashionable asses in the Battle of Pueblo. An unexpected win, the 8,000 well-equipped French had already blown through Veracruz on their way to Mexico City. President Juarez was retreating when 4,500 Mexican soldiers in Pueblo stopped the French army in their tracks. It’s not Mexican Independence day (that’s Sept. 16) but it is a holiday in the state of Pueblo. Because of this, it’s considered an international insult if you don’t raise a glass to the tenacious Mexican forces of more than 150 years ago. Here on Maui, we’ll be celebrating in style with margaritas, mariachis, Mexican beer, flamenco and loads of mescal and tequila. Here’s a quick roster of where the Cinco de Mayo festivities will be. Just please enjoy yourself responsibly:

KAHULUI Las Pinatas: Nobody has celebrated 20 consecutive years of Cinco de Mayo like this restaurant, located on the corner of Dairy Road and Hana Highway. They’ll have an all-day happy hour, $1 off quesadillas and nachos, half-off chips, free chips with large guacamole and some of the best chicken tacos in town (the last part is more of a year-round thing). Sombrero not required while you polish off a few Mexican beers and your favorite burrito.

PAIA

LAHAINA Cheeseburger In Paradise: How about honoring the Mexican fighters with a Cheeseburger Mexicali? Live music starts at 4:30pm and specials include smoked pork nachos, Corona, Patron Silver, 1800 Gold and Jose Cuervo Gold. Captain Jack’s: Chilled shots of Dobel will be my tribute to El Día de la Batalla de Puebla. Well, that and $4 margaritas, Coronas and $3 chicken tacos all day long. Hard Rock: Hop aboard your round-trip flight on Air Mexico. Order up any of six different sweet and savory pupus that come with your ticket on Air Mexico–that is, three different mini margaritas designed to turn your happy hour into an instant Mexican paradise. Oh, and Evan Shulman will be strumming Santana-style. Lahaina Sports Bar: Cinco photo booth and prizes! What could be Funner? Wait, “funner” isn’t a word? It is if you’re drinking tequila! $6 Patron shots, $3 Corona and tacos. Arriba!

Spanky’s Riptide: Spanko de Mayo. No animals will be harmed during the celebration of Spanko de Mayo. $3 Corona, Corona Light and Pacificos, $4 Sauza shots, $5 double Sauza margaritas on the rocks. Bonus round: Spanky’s carries 35-plus tequilas, 30 bottled beers, (six of which are Mexican) and eight draft beers (two of which are Mexican).

KIHEI Ambrosia: DJ Jumpin Jones will spin, you drink tequila. They’ll have $5 well (Sauza Gold) tequila shots, $6 Patron Silver, $6 Corzo, $7 margaritas and $4 Coronas. Win win. Diamonds: Doing Pueblo proud with their Cinco de Mayo party all day with $3 Coronas, Corona Light and Dos Equis, $4 Pacifico and $2 chicken, beef or al pastor tacos. Their selection of tequila should keep your day lubricated with Hornito, Cuervo, Cabo, Cazedores, Camerana, and Patron. Hungry? Food’s served until midnight. Sports Page Grill and Bar: It’s Cinco de Bingo! Plus $3 Mexi beer, $5 margaritas, Cuervo, and Cuervo Cinge shots. Feeling extra lucky? The tequila bar offers Jose Cuervo: Silver, Cinge Gold, 1800, Patron

Anejo and Reposado, Cazadores Reposado and Blanco, Camerena Gold and Silver, Sauza Hornitos Reposado and Anejo and Don Julio Blanco and Anejo. Oh, and happy hour prices 10pm to midnight. South Shore Tiki Lounge: How do you drink a Snookie? Find out May 5 when Tiki Lounge offers a margarita with a bottle of Corona placed upside down in it for just $7. They’ll also celebrate with Taco Pizza, which you can wash it down with Patron, Don Julio, Cuervo, Sauza or Pacifico.

ISLANDWIDE Amigos: Kick off Cinco with a Tres de Mayo blowout pre-party at Amigos Kihei on Saturday night. Ten bucks gets you in with DJ Jamn J and Dj Nexus spinning muy caliente beats, and giveaways from Fierce Salon, and Certified Sounds and drink specials like $4 Corona, $7 Patron and $5 Cuervo. Then Amigos Lahaina, Kihei, and Kahului will go richter on the Fifth with $2.75 tacos, $3.99 Corona and $5.99 Patron. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

Sangrita Grill: Devils Thyme Margaritas! Strawberry, Serrano chile and thyme are muddled to perfection with tequila. It’s so refreshing and just for Mexico. Plus Maui’s biggest collection of Mezcal (see Picks of the Week on page 27 for more info).

Milagros: Celebrate every day like it’s Cinco de Mayo with a happy hour that runs 1-5pm daily with $3 house margari-

tas, draft beer and Tecate and Modelo in the can. The tequila selection at the bar is extensive: Corzo, Don Julio, El Tesoro, Espolon, Gran Centenario, Herradura, Patron, Tierras–Organic, 100 Años and Cabo Wabo are just some. If you want to explore, try one of their flights.

Spider-Man Returns Again! Though he should have stayed away The Amazing Spider-Man 2

★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 142 Min.

O

nce the end credits for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 began to roll, my friend Zach leaned over and asked me, “Did you take any notes for this film?” I told him I almost never jot anything down during movies, a practice I gave up in college, with my bad handwriting trumping good intentions. In the case of the new Spider-Man, the first sequel in the new series, I just sat there and grew frustrated. Very much in the same way one would sit at a bus stop, waiting angrily for a ride that never arrives. Ten years after Sam Raimi’s critically acclaimed, wildly popular, Tobey Maguire-starring Spider-Man 2, we have a sequel to the new version, with a new director and cast. Spidey 2.0, with (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb helming and Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, worked beautifully the first time. Garfield’s moody, teenage Hamlet with web shooters was well matched with Emma Stone’s plucky Gwen Stacey. More so than in previous incarnations, the love story truly got my spider senses tingling.

The sequel goes wrong immediately and really never recovers. A pre-title sequence depicts a vivid plane crash, always a fun way to start a summer movie geared towards children. Then, we follow our hero pursuing Paul Giamatti as a Russian villain with a tattoo that circles his forehead. Like much of the movie, this set piece is flashy, noisy, frantic and obnoxious. Giamatti isn’t merely hamming it up–he appears rabid and ready to eat the scenery. We’re introduced to Jami Foxx’s Max Dillon, an awkward, meek employee of Oscorp (the science-based company that gave us Spider-Man, Lizard Man and is seemingly only good for spawning dangerous mutations). Dillon was once saved by Spider-Man, and he’s turned into a full-blown Spideystalker who “talks” to his hero while rummaging through the fridge. I enjoyed Foxx in the role, even when he transforms into Electro and the character becomes an extended special effect. Dillon’s uber-nerdy demeanorturned-empowered-evil-doer brings to mind Michelle Pfeiffer’s Selina Kyle in Batman Returns. Whereas Pfeiffer had time to shape her character and turned in a tour de force, Foxx has to rush the character development and strain to keep up with the other subplots in this overly busy movie.

Take that... umm... who am I fighting again?

Thankfully, the scenes where the characters just talk to one another provide narrative rest stops from the constant barrage of mayhem. Garfield’s scenes with Stone are soulful and sweet. The love story should have carried the film (as it ably and movingly centered the prior installment). Instead, our charismatic leads, sometimes while still embracing from a romantic interlude, have to shift gears and blurt out mouthfuls of exposition to set up the next action sequence. The third act offers truly embarrassing sights. The big reveal of Dane DeHaan (very good playing Harry Osborn) in the clanging second climax made me laugh, though I doubt it was intended to be humorous. Then there’s Giamatti’s last minute

return to the film. Giamatti is such a wonderful actor, I wonder if it saddened him, as much as it did me, to see what his requirements were for this movie. The role is small but he manages to look foolish and bellow “I am the Rhino!” The indignities he faced acting opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts seem minor by comparison. Children may enjoy this intense, though not graphically violent movie but the web slinger slips and trips up almost as badly as he did in the woeful Spider-Man 3. I recently showed my film class the 1989 Batman, which had a simple plot, one hero and one villain. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is so overloaded, you may forget all the abandoned subplots and supporting characters left in the rubble. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

The other night, I dreamt I was directing a new horror movie called Noise, about a house that killed people using sound. I woke up loving the idea of a supernatural, conscious house (even a malign one), and then I thought of you, and your recent conception that less-than-benevolent forces are at work against you. No, I can’t definitively prove that your car, apartment, or elevator isn’t out to get you. But I’d like to suggest that you’re out to get yourself, in that peculiar form of subtle self-sabotage you’re infamous for. So the next time you’re shocked by the <DOOR CLOSE> button or get your finger slammed in the car door, look for the possible poltergeist in your own soul, not outside. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Do not, I repeat, do not throw in the towel, no matter how grim the situation. Giving up is never the answer, even if it gives you the illusion of “control” over your reality. It’s better to try for the one vanishingly slender chance for success or survival, no matter how unlikely it seems. There’s really no logical reason why you’d do anything else. Yes, the odds may seem (or even be) stacked against you. However, that’s no reason to fold like a house of cards. It’s very simple: If you don’t try for victory, you definitely won’t achieve it; if you do, you’ll probably lose anyway—but you just might win.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Being important to people can, at times, be such a burden. It’s the endless Scorpionic struggle: how to balance your intense need for introspection and deep, undisturbed reflection with your powerful urge to share your wisdom, philosophical musings and soulrooted passion with other people (who consequently fall in love with you, worship you, or enthusiastically despise you (or all three)). Sometimes the two nearlyconflicting (but actually complementary) compulsions don’t arrive in synch with your outer reality; that is, you need to retreat when people most need your love, guidance, and discipline, and you feel the inclination to reach out when people are least receptive to what you have to offer. Luckily, this week you’ll be exactly in tune with which role the universe wants you to play. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Your chronic need for speed may become irresistibly intense and reach unprecedented heights this week. Very little can satisfy this urge besides a brief voyage on the Concorde or a record-breaking cross-country road trip. Not for you is the endless high-velocity circling of a track; you need to be actually going somewhere—the faster the better. Go ahead, indulge your craving (as if I could stop you). Just make sure the cannon’s pointed in generally the right direction (and there’s a net to catch you where you’re going) before you fire yourself from it.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

I feel like you’re listening to me, from behind my closet door, or watching me via telescope from the apartment across the street. I’m not alone, either; many people have felt your tangible presence in their lives lately, whether or not you’re actually there. If only you could reap some reward from this stretched out psychic footprint. Wait! You can! It’s useful to have all these people thinking of you while they’re alone. Drop subtle hints about what you need or want; the next time you see the people who heard them, you’re likely to get it. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Most Leos exercise such a high degree of control over virtually every aspect of their existences that they seek temporary asylums from their own power. It feels good to take a break from being in charge for a while. For years now, you’ve gotten your servility fix one way, but your old outlet for exercising humility will soon no longer be a healthy option. This week start researching new way ways to explore your passive, receptive side. This time, you might have to give up even more jurisdiction. Trust. As long as you choose the right person or situation to turn them over to, you’ll get the reins of your life back undamaged, and in plenty of time to keep from steering off-course.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Hey Peg-leg. Lately, you’ve compensated for your selfperceived handicaps with accessories and attitude that have made you far more appealing than you were before you started considering your own flaws. Yes, self-examination has, ultimately, made you sexy. If you lost an eye, you’d be hotter in an eye patch than most people are with a full pair. You’re probably a bit less piratical (and literal) than I’ve suggested in making up for your minor failings, but don’t underestimate the ability of those compensations to attract and charm. So get out there and pillage the local scene for all available booty for your bedroom and gold for your teeth. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Lately your cynicism has spiraled out of control. Far be it from me to refute your now time-tested unbelief about lasting romantic love. But there are some things you do believe in, like other kinds of love, and friendship, and creation. It’s time to envision a realistic positive future for yourself, one that excludes the stuff you simply no longer believe in, but includes all the stuff you do, in such creative combinations and quantities that you’ll end up happier than in any previously-imagined future. Get on it. The sooner you invent the possibility of your new reality, the sooner it can manifest.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Take a shower. Do a Colon Cleanse. This week you need to finally rid yourself of the still clinging emotional detritus of your last chapter, whatever it takes. It ended last month, for fuck’s sake! Try an all-over skin peel, a Catholic exorcism, or the local Santeria shaman’s best voodoo cure. Whatever you do, don’t end the week still allowing (or worse, holding onto) the outmoded fears and beliefs that defined your last spin around the block. Eject the monkey from its free ride on your back. Try to toss it in front of the car, finally, so you can run over and kill it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

If I were a magician (either in the Harry Potter sense or in the archetypal Tarot sense), my laptop would be my magic wand. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to cast most of the spells I use to survive and navigate my way through the world. It can’t easily be replaced; therefore, I’m protective of it. There’s a parallel in your life. There’s one principle tool you use to facilitate life or comfort, whether it’s your car, your family name, or your exceptional good looks. In any case, don’t give anyone else power over it this week unless they’re prepared to give you a better version of what you’ve already got.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Orchids’ closest relatives are asparagus. These ancient flowers are unlike most other blooms (although irises and daffodils are distant second cousins). They’re like you—they look like one thing but are actually, inside, more like another. That is, you mightappear shallowly and vainly beautiful, like a perpetually blooming flower, but you’re actually deep and nutritious, like the orchid’s other relatives, yucca and onions. Go out and buy an orchid to nurture this week—you need a reminder of the startling contrast between how people perceive you and how you really are, so you never make the mistake of believing other people’s opinions of your limitations. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Biting the hand that feeds you is never a good idea. You know this. Yet somehow, this week, you may not be able to resist nipping it a little. Is it because you resent the beneficence that comes at the cost of someone else’s generosity? Not really. Is it because you don’t like the strings attached to what’s being given? Nope. There is a reason, though—once you figure out what it is, you’ll no longer be inclined to chewing the fingers of your benefactor. Even better, you probably won’t need them to support you in any way, any more. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
