never run for elected office before. Governor Neil Abercrombie appointed him to the seat representing Kahului in the big legislative shake-up following the December 2012 death of U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye. Perhaps smelling more than a healthy portion of blood in the political water, former Maui County Mayor James “Kimo” Apana announced months ago that he would run against Woodson in the Aug. 9 primary election.

ACLU took this into account, which is why they agreed to settle and we appreciate that.” See, had Mamuad been an actual journalist–a person who makes his or her living by just doing journalism–none of this would have happened. But Mamuad wants to run a popular Facebook page (which has no revenue model we can discern) as well as work for the County. And so how did Mamuad celebrate his newly secured press freedoms? By planting a big wet one on the Maui Police Department, of course! On May 8, Mamuad posted video and numerous photos of the MPD’s Special Response Team–and its giant, militarystyle armored Bearcat–along with captions and comments that would make the most hardened cop smile with pride. “This was the demo MPD’s Special Response Team did at today’s D.A.R.E. Day,” MAUIWatch wrote. “Two ‘bad guys’ went

Pro tip: If you send out a press release announcing that the Speaker of the House of Representatives has endorsed you for reelection, make sure said Speaker has actually endorsed you. Rookie Rep. Justin Woodson, D–Kahului, learned this Political Campaign 101 lesson the hard way this weekend. On Friday, May 9, his campaign chairwoman Thelma Pascua Suyat sent out a press release titled “House Speaker Souki Endorses Justin Woodson.” Seemed definite enough. The release even included a quote from Speaker Joe Souki, D– Wailuku, himself, though on closer inspection you’ll notice he doesn’t actually use the E Word: “Representative Woodson has been a valuable asset to the Maui delegation in the State House and served as an important part of our team over the past two years,” Souki is quoted as saying in the news release. Maui News City Editor Brian Perry wrote a story on the alleged endorsement in that paper’s May 11 edition, which seems to have gotten Souki’s attention because the next day the News published an unbylined story titled “Souki is pleased with Woodson’s work, but he did not endorse him.” According to the May 12 Maui News story, Souki was “distressed” and “very disappointed” with Woodson for announcing an endorsement that Souki says was never made. “I normally do not endorse Democrats in the primary,” Souki is quoted as saying in The Maui News. On the afternoon of May 12, Woodson emailed a response to the incident. “I highly respect Speaker Souki and will never attempt to tarnish our good working relationship by falsely claiming endorsements,” he said. “It was an honest and unfortunate miscommunication between myself and Speaker Souki, and I am taking responsibility.” For those who can’t tell, Woodson has
Oh beautiful irony, where have you been? I thought I’d lost you, but then you popped up your pretty little head in, of all places, a press release from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announcing that the federal MAUIWatch lawsuit–brought about by Neldon Mamuad, one of the site’s administrators who is also a part-time staffer for Maui County Councilman Don Guzman–has settled. Here are the details on the suit, according to this May 9 press release from the ACLU (which provided Mamuad some legal representation): “As part of the settlement, the County agreed to drastically re-write its antiharassment policy to make clear that the 2,500 employees of the County are still entitled to their First Amendment rights outside the workplace,” stated the ACLU release. “The changes will also require the County’s lawyers to review any complaints of harassment at an early stage, to make sure that County employees do not have to submit to intrusive interviews about their off-work activities that are protected by the First Amendment. Additionally, the County will expunge any record of disciplinary action related to Mamuad’s free speech activities. The County will also pay $25,000 in attorneys’ fees and damages.” Not a bad win for a guy who created his Facebook page (which was first named TAGUMAWatch) so that people all over
the island could ridicule Maui Police Officer Keith Taguma. It was only after the county officials started to pressure Mamuad that he changed the name to MAUIWatch and turned his attention to automobile accidents, missing persons and fallen trees. Still, getting a settlement worth $25,000 in fees and damages is pretty sweet. Of course, MauiTime publisher Tommy Russo spent part of May 8 in court trying to convince a judge to dismiss the State of Hawaii’s attempt to criminalize his taking of photos during a Maui Police traffic stop, but hey, we’re all in the same sinking boat called Journalism, right? Mamuad certainly didn’t forget, as he put it in that ACLU press release: “The County violated my free speech rights and wasted taxpayer money by trying to censor the content of MAUIWatch,” he said. “It took a month of mediation and settlement conferences, but we finally got the County to realize that they were swimming upstream, against well-settled Federal law, and against the Constitution. I brought this case to protect my rights and to make sure all other public employees and volunteers can exercise their First Amendment rights as well. Hopefully the County has learned its lesson and realized that the government cannot use its power to quiet opinions it doesn’t like.” Of course, the County of Maui didn’t waste much time throwing a bucket of cold water on all that “Constitution” talk. Here’s County Communications Director Rod Antone, in a May 9 statement: “The County of Maui is pleased that this case has concluded, and that a compromise has been reached,” said Antone. “However, the County remains firm in its stance that Mr. Mamuad should not have been allowed to conduct a personal vendetta against Officer Taguma, then proceed to lie about his intent by saying it was all in the name of the First Amendment. That sort of blatant disregard for the truth goes against everything the First Amendment stands for in the first place. Certainly the

into the stands and tried to sell drugs to the kids. When the kids refused, the bad guys kidnapped 3 children by placing them in the white car. That’s when SRT showed up with the Bearcat to ‘rescue’ the kids. Based on how loud the kids were screaming during the demo, we’d say it was a success!” Of course, not everyone on the site was happy with Mamuad’s sudden prostration before the great MPD. But Mamuad would have none of it. After Karen Chun questioned why the MPD needed the Bearcat, Mamuad put her in her place: “We hear you Karen Chun, but based on some of the crazy stories we’ve monitored and covered, we support it,” MAUIWatch wrote. “Maui is definitely changing, and while it may seem a bit overboard to the general public, when the _____ hits the fan we’ll be counting our blessings for having a well trained police force to maintain order.”■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

REV’D Superfood Bars has signed Maui surfer Matt Meola to its team. “Matt Meola is one of the most progressive surfers in the world today,” said REV’D Team Manager Matt O’Connor. “He does things on a surfboard that were previously thought impossible. By signing Matt to the REV’D surf team, we’re showing our support for the evolution of surfing. Our goal is to build a well-rounded team that includes free surfers like Matt as well as contest surfers. We want to support all aspects of the sport.” Meola, 24, is known as one of the most inventive aerial surfers in the world. In fact, his athletic passion began on a skateboard, and he didn’t seriously begin surfing until he was 13. Meola’s surf skills gained the attention of the surf community in 2011 when he won the Innersection video contest with a video edit showcasing an array of spectacular aerials. Meola is also a big wave surfer who paddles into the giant winter swells at “Jaws” on the North shore of Maui. “I’m very happy to be riding for REV’D, “ Meola said. “This year has been off to a great start and I’m psyched about working with them... I am also excited to be associated with a company that is leading the way to create a safety net for action sports athletes and their families. This effort will really help the surf

community when bad things happen.” REV’D’s decision to welcome Meola into its fold reflects its dedication to support athletes that push the evolution of their sport and the limits of human athleticism. “Matt’s an innovator, said O’Connor. “The influence of his early interest in skateboarding can be seen in the way he surfs. This kind of juxtaposition is what REV’D is all about. We make superfood bars that are nutritious and actually taste super.” REV’D nutrition bars are non-GMO and made with wholesome ingredients including oats, dates, nuts, and superfoods like cocoa and organic Peruvian maca. REV’D bars contain no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, no trans fat, no hydrogenated oils and no corn syrup. The company, which values innovation, positivity and empowering youth, supports cutting edge athletes, artists and musicians. REV’D is also helping to start the non-profit Fallen Athletes Fund.

A new series of videos and publications to help Hawaii’s growers, consumers and chefs become more familiar with breadfruit has been released by the Ho‘oulu ka ‘Ulu project. The videos and publications were designed to assist growers in supplying grocery
tify and pick breadfruit when it is mature, at its optimal flavor and marketability. A corresponding video, Harvest and Post-harvest Best Practices, provides a visual demonstration of the key practices outlined in the Breadfruit Production Guide. An additional video, Handling and Preparation of Breadfruit, features Chef Sam Choy explaining how to prepare breadfruit from start to finish. Peeling and cutting, and various methods of cooking—steaming, boiling, frying and baking–are demonstrated in the video. Choy is joined in the video by Chef De Cuisine Scott Hiraishi of Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai, and cultural practitioner Shirley Kauhaihao of Honaunau. Additional new publications highlight basic preparation, nutrition and information about the varieties of the fruit. Brief Breadfruit Basics is a two-page publication that features handling and preparation methods. Breadfruit— Nutritional Value and Versatility highlights the

stores, restaurants and farmers’ markets with high quality fruit; they were also designed to help chefs become more familiar with breadfruit handling and preparation in the kitchen. In addition, backyard growers, consumers and educators will find information relevant to home and community use of breadfruit. The production of breadfruit is expected to increase dramatically—representing millions of dollars in potential retail sales of breadfruit in the next five to eight years. The increase is due to the sales and distribution of thousands of breadfruit trees in Hawaii in the past few years. Breadfruit can also play an increased key role in island food self-sufficiency, as it’s been a primary staple food in the Pacific for thousands of years, according to the Ho’oulu ka ‘Ulu project. The new videos and publications demonstrate how to properly harvest, handle and utilize breadfruit to fully realize its commercial and community value. The 24-page Breadfruit Production Guide: Recommended Practices for Growing, Harvesting and Handling is aimed primarily at breadfruit growers. The guide details best practices for harvest and post-harvest handling to optimize value in the marketplace. The guide explains how to iden-
fruit's healthy qualities. Also, because each variety of breadfruit is slightly different in taste and how it looks when mature, the organization has published Breadfruit Variety Cards which describe three common varieties of breadfruit in Hawaii— Ma‘afala, ‘Ulu and Meinpadahk. The cards are designed to help growers and chefs understand the subtle differences when harvesting and preparing in the kitchen. The videos and publications are produced by the Ho‘oulu ka ‘Ulu—Revitalizing Breadfruit project and are sponsored by the State of Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture. Ho’oulu ka ‘Ulu is a project to revitalize ‘ulu as an attractive, delicious, nutritious, abundant, affordable, and culturally appropriate food that addresses Hawaii’s food security issues. Ho’oulu ka ‘Ulu is a project of the Hawaii Homegrown Food Network and the Breadfruit Institute of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. All of the videos and publications are available for free download at breadfruit. info and breadfruit.org. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

News Of The Weird TOO MUCH MONEY Lanai owner Larry Ellison, the CEO of Oracle Corp. (and the world’s fifth-richest person, according to Forbes magazine) is a big basketball fan and was reported in April to have an interest in purchasing the Los Angeles Clippers NBA team. An Ellison associate told the Wall Street Journal, for example, that Ellison has basketball courts on at least two of his yachts and shoots hoops for relaxation on the open water. To retrieve his errant shots that go overboard, Ellison hires a ballboy in a powerboat to trail the yachts.
LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN Speaking on a popular Christian Internet podcast in March (reported by Houston’s KHOU-TV), Pastor John Benefiel of Oklahoma City’s Church on the Rock described how, in a 2007 blessing, he might have prayed “too hard.” He was attempting to help drought-stricken Texas and Oklahoma by using a specific prayer message (the “Baal divorce decree”), but that inadvertently resulted, he said, in “every lake” in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri rising above flood stage, causing thousands of people to lose their homes and 22 to lose their lives.
DETAILS! After convicted murderer Loren Larson Jr. filed a federal lawsuit in Anchorage, Alaska, claiming that his prison wristband ID “defil[ed]” him religiously because it was a “mark of the devil,” a Goose Creek Correctional Center official lectured him on the Book of Revelation. Actually, wrote the official, we would be commanding the “mark of the beast” only if we ordered the ID either “in the right hand” or “in the forehead,” and neither is required by current wristband policy. (Hence, the double-murderer, serving 198 years, still qualifies to avoid hell.)
WHY IS A JEDI IN PRISON? An unnamed British inmate published a letter in a prison newspaper in April alleging continuous religious discrimination against him by guards and officials. The man claims he is a practicing Jedi (and of course cannot reveal his name because he fears retaliation “from the dark side”) and complains that Jedi-ism, though officially recognized as a religion in the UK (the seventh-most popular, according to the census, with more than 175,000 adherents) is nonetheless unacknowledged by the National Offender Management Service.
INHUMANE SOCIETY Denmark’s Copenhagen Zoo aroused worldwide ire in February when it slaughtered and publicly dismembered a healthy young giraffe (“Marius”) in order to feed a hungry lion. Then, in March, the Zoo killed four healthy lions to make room for a new male. By contrast, reported Vice. com in April, Denmark has no law against humans having sex with animals (un-

less it amounts to torture). Animal rights campaigners have recently expressed alarm that Denmark will become a destination for “animal sex tourism” attracting horny “zoophiles” from around the world.
QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS Manhattan’s New York Sushi Ko is only the most recent sophisticated restaurant to feature creative dishes made with Hormel Spam, and foodies and hipsters in fashionable neighborhoods have flocked to the foods. Spam is a well-known delicacy in Hawaii, and the New York facilities offer the island’s musubi (fried Spam, rice, seaweed) and other Spam fried rice bowls with seared ahi and flourishes of fresh pineapple, according to an April report on Gothamist.com. Sushi Ko’s chef playfully acknowledges that his contents are fresh– ”fresh from the can” and sourced locally– ”from the nearest bodega.”
O CANADA! Skylar Murphy, 18, happened to show up at Alberta’s Edmonton International Airport in September 2013 with a black-powderloaded pipe bomb in his carry-on, ready to board an international flight. Agents confiscated the bomb but allowed Murphy to continue on his trip, and in fact police were not notified, nor were possible “terrorism” ties examined, until four days later. (Canada’s version of the Transportation Security Administration is not allowed to apprehend or detain passengers.) In December, the harsh hammer of justice finally slammed down on Murphy. He was fined $100 and sentenced to a year of probation.
UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Britain’s most-tattooed man (the former Mathew Whelan, 34, now “King of Ink Land Body Art The Extreme Ink-Ite”), whose body is 90-percent ink-covered, finally acknowledged in March that he needed to undergo laser removal to clear up his skin. However, “Body Art,” as he is known, then explained that he was spending the equivalent of about $10,000 on removal just so he could start over with new tattoos.
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS At a press conference in April, as Houston police officers announced they were after two burglars who had broken into Katz’s lingerie boutique, surveillance video showed two armed men cautiously creeping through the store until one accidentally bumped the other, apparently startling the bumped man, who turned and fired– causing the first man to fire back. Officers counted nearly a dozen bullet holes in the store. Said the Houston press briefer, these are “by far some of the clumsiest crooks that I’ve seen in a long time.” ■

TECH How Maui Startup Weekend provides new opportunities for our island’s entrepreneurs By Anthony Pignataro
10 MAY 15, 2014
y her own admission, Sara Smith was scared. She made her living on Maui in the publishing business, and doing communications for the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, but now she was in Honolulu, surrounded by people she didn’t know. It was 2013, and she had decided to take part in the Honolulu version of Startup Weekend. “It was terrifying for me personally,” Smith said. “I was an absolute stranger there. But I also had anonymity. I was confident that it would never get back to anyone if I failed.” Consider Startup Weekend to be a kind of quick incubator for entrepreneurs. It’s a simple idea–get an idea, pay a $99 entry fee, then go into a 54-hour workshop with coders, engineers, developers and mentors who will work on thrashing out that idea, maybe even working to shape it into an actual, viable for-profit company. At the end of the weekend, judges give $50,000 to the event’s best project. Over the last few years, there have been thousands of these weekend events taking place around the world. Formed in Boulder, Colorado in 2007 by Andrew Hype as a nonprofit, Startup Weekend is today based in Seattle, Washington and is owned by Marc Nager and Clint Nelson. Funders include Coca Cola, Microsoft, Google and the Kauffman Foundation. “All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers,” states the Startup Weekend website. “Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culmi-
B
nate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.” This year marks the first time Startup Weekend will hold an event on Maui. It runs May 16-18 at the Maui Research and Technology Park (MRTP) in Kihei. When asked why Maui was hosting such an event, Powers said the credit lay with Arben Kryeziu, the CEO of Bump Networks and the co-founder of the startup fund Mbloom (Kryeziu did not return repeated phone calls for this story). “This is totally due to Arben’s pushing and pushing and pushing,” said Keith Powers, an entrepreneur who’s currently consulting with five startups and will serve as one of four coaches during the Maui Startup Weekend. “He’s helping Maui find its feet in the startup world.” Given the increasingly computerized nature of today’s world–and the prevalence of technology in the economy’s fastest growing firms–it certainly helps to be a coder or engineer at these events, but it’s certainly not required. “Everyone has this fantasy idea of starting a company,” said Powers “But
most people don’t know how to do it. You’re a smart person, but you might not have the technical skills to code up a proof of concept. So you go through this, get feedback from coaches, and get help putting together a full-blown idea into something you can see, touch and feel.” That’s what Smith was hoping for last year when she went to Honolulu’s Startup Weekend. “I had been sitting on my idea for years,” Smith said. “I was encouraged by mentors to start talking about it, and Startup Weekend was a good opportunity. I had never done it before, and was blindly going through the weekend. I had no idea what to expect.” Her idea, though it has a tech component, was as far from designing a fancy new mobile app as you can get. “You take great patterns and the print them on recyclable newsprint using newspaper presses,” Smith said. “It’s a new twist on wrapping paper, and an answer to getting rid of a lot of needless trash.” What makes Smith’s idea especially interesting is that it’s scalable. No matter where such a company is located, it would use locally sourced materials and locally available presses. “It’s a local product wherever it goes,” Smith said. For Smith, going to Startup Weekend played a critical role in turning her idea into an actual company.
be one of the Maui Startup Weekend coaches this year. “There are a variety of coaches,” she said. “I’m in the trenches, going through it. On that level, I can provide guidance.” Smith was able to create Wrappily because Startup Weekends are what Powers calls “focal points”–places where creative people can get together to work out ideas in groups. “You need focal points,” Powers said. “Culturally, for some people, that can be a coffee shop. Other times, you need something more structured like a Startup Weekend or an incubator. This is a very quick way to bring things together.” In fact, Powers sees the Maui version of Startup Weekend as a sign that the island could grow its own community of startup entrepreneurs, designers and engineers. “Boulder is a good example,” said Powers. “It took about 10 years for it to become a heavyweight startup sector.” During that time, he said they built an “ecosystem” of engineers, software developers, designers, angel investors and mentors. “But on Maui, it doesn’t have to take 10 years,” Powers added. “It could take three years. There are already tons of people from the startup world who go there for vacation, and they’d love to find an excuse to work there, too.” It’s a fascinating idea, but building a
“Everyone has this fantasy idea of starting a company,” said Keith Powers “But most people don’t know how to do it.”
MAUI STARTUP WEEKEND Runs May 16-18 at the Maui Research and Technology Park (590 Lipoa Pkwy., Kihei). For more information, visit Maui.startupweekend.org or email events@startupweekend.org. “It was a frantic pace,” she said. “Trying to hash it out and get as much accomplished by the end of the weekend.” Smith said that during the weekend she and her team conducted surveys on her idea, actually purchased a domain name and then built a website. They also fleshed out a revenue model and discussed potential conflicts. Called Wrappily (Wrappily.com), Smith’s company uses a different website today than that built during Startup Weekend, but it’s nothing less than her Startup Weekend idea made into a reality. For that reason, she’ll
tech economy on Maui is an old idea. In fact, you can consider the creation of the Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB) back in 1982 as the island’s first shot at creating jobs that weren’t tourist or agricultural-based (current MEDB President/CEO Jeanne Unemori Skog will also be a Maui Startup Weekend coach). Environmental and funding problems delayed the construction of the Maui Research and Technology Park and the Maui High Performance Computer Center in Kihei a decade. Still, as Mansel Blackford chronicled in his 2001 book Fragile Paradise: The Impact of Tourism on Maui, 1959-
2000, filling the MRTP with tenants was a tough prospect. “A major challenge lay in the dearth of scientists and technicians,” Blackford wrote. Other problems included the lack of a four-year university and high corporate tax rates. A 1994 report on the development of high-tech industries in Hawaii predicted that it would take “at least another twentyfive to thirty years” before such an economy was fully functional in the state, Blackford reported. Indeed, it may take even longer. Blackford wrote in his book that in 1998, the MRTP hosted “twenty-some companies and organizations” that employed “about 100 people.” According to the MRTP website today, “approximately 400 people work in the Maui Research & Technology Park at over 20 companies.” It’s a solid, though relatively small, increase in employment, but the number of firms doing technical and engineering work in South Maui hasn’t really changed. Though the conversion of Maui Community College to a full four-year campus in the University of Hawaii system in 2010 is an improvement, many of those old challenges remain. “People want to live on Maui, but there are a lot of issues,” Powers said. “Big companies don’t want to build satellite officers there because of the cost, and security, but also because there aren’t enough developers and engineers. If the engineers were there, I think companies would find a way to come.” Perhaps, but recent studies show that the fastest growing startup communities in the nation are in densely packed urban areas. According to Richard Florida, author of an extensive Mar. 31 study of 13 metro areas for The Atlantic, “start-ups based in these metros accounted for almost three-quarters of venture capital investment in 2011.” There are a number of reasons for this. “Firms want access to talent, and talented people like to cluster in dense urban areas with thick labor markets, abundant amenities and services, and a vibrant social life,” wrote Florida. “Density is also much more efficient for young companies who want to rent cheap office space and offer employees access to the amenities like gyms, restaurants, and coffee shops that they’d have to provide for themselves on a suburban campus. And these companies can now thrive in smaller urban spaces, as much of tech is increasingly focused on software, apps, and social media, which do not require large campuses.” While that’s all true, it’s also undeniable that Maui’s upcoming Startup Weekend would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. But today, given the success of people like Smith, the notion of Maui nurturing startups is real. “Just the fact that this is being done is a success,” Powers said. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

So Many Beers, So Little Time Your guide to Brewfest

eer is a gift from the ancient monks and alchemists of Mesopotamia. But it’s also a gift that keeps on giving: modern brewing marvels have given us more types of craft brews to keep up with the complexities of our contemporary palates. Here on Maui, Maui Brewing Company’s locally crafted brews have fed the progress and kept craft culture at the forefront of local beer consumption. The Maui Brewers Festival, a benefit at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, is another key to our beer appreciation. This year, the festival will offer 70 beers from 29 breweries. The food community has rallied around the festival, and there will be cuisine from 24 of our island’s best restaurants, food trucks and caterers. Of course, the hardest part about the Maui Brewers Festival is figuring out which beers to taste. To help you, we created this handy brew guide. We don’t have the space to get into the brewing subtleties of each beer–what makes an IPA versus lager; why maibocks are a spring beer; what is a summer ale; what differentiates American styles from European styles–but you can always download the BJCP app, which breaks down 28 different styles of beer. But what we can do is list the festival’s brews. Feel free to tear this out and keep in your pocket. And for any social beer blabbers, remember to use the #MauiBrewFest hashtag with your posts. As always, enjoy yourself, but please do so responsibly:

‘Where Is Godzilla?’ Seriously, the big lizard guy isn’t in this remake nearly enough Godzilla ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 123 Min.
T
he Americanized Godzilla movies always get the same thing wrong: no one cares about the humans! When the star of your movie is as tall as the Empire State Building, resembles a cheerful alligator, walks casually through massive structures and can breathe fire, who cares about the puny humans who stand in his vast shadow? The new Godzilla has an international, allstar cast and at no point did I care if they were all simultaneously stepped on. In fact, I think it would have helped the movie. Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Ford, a recently deployed soldier whose R&R time with his wife (Elisabeth Olsen) and son are cut short when he learns his father (Bryan Cranston) has been arrested in Japan. Ford leaves his family, but not before his wife tells him “you’ll be back in a few days,” which, in movies like this, means he won’t be home anytime soon. Once father and son are reunited, their prickly banter is interrupted by discoveries of a massive government

cover-up and filmed proof of a giant monster emerging from the sea. At one point, a weathered, on-edge scientist (Ken Watanabe) turns slowly towards the camera and announces: “his name... is Godzilla.” The establishing imagery brings to mind modern disasters, like Hurricane Katrina, as well as Hiroshima and Chernobyl, indicating a serious tone. While this is better than the jokey, broadly humored (and stupid) 1998 interpretation by Roland Emmerich, it bears a similar story outline. After a wrenching opening scene, the story trots all over the world, giving us lots of exposition and piles of rubble but never taking off. No one in the cast ever steps up and takes hold, leaving us with no rooting human interest or emotional center. Cranston reliably conveys angst but he exits the movie far too early. Watanabe and Sally Hawkins look silly dishing out paragraphs of plot details, though David Strathairn, looking really lost playing an admiral, fails to convince when asking things like, “Where is Godzilla?” Taylor-Johnson has the most to do but his sharp looks are all he brings to the role. Olsen is stuck in yet another half-baked role unworthy of the actress, who has yet
We're supposed to root for Godzilla, right?
to capitalize on her amazing Martha Marcy May Marlene debut in 2011. We’re supposed to care about all of these people, but their character traits are overly familiar and predictable. They display no inner life. The monster movie going on around them is a mixed bag, as there’s no fully sustained set-pieces until over an hour in. After we finally get introduced to the title character (who doesn’t have enough screen time), the camera keeps cutting away from him and his earth-shaking battles. Since the cinematographer decides to keep the action at ground level, there’s too much focus on people running away and taking cover and not enough of the monster mash. There are great scenes, like a bridge encounter out in the woods that finally establishes some momentum. There’s also a stunning free-fall sequence, leading to the grand finale,
which finally delivers the goods we’ve been waiting for. Director Gareth Edwards capably borrows visual cues from Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg (especially Jaws, Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds) but his movie takes too long to get moving. Thankfully, his climactic scenes are so thrilling and crowd-pleasing that it salvages an uneven summer movie. While better than the idiotic Pacific Rim, the problem isn’t over-plotting but over-population. Except for Cranston and Watanabe, no one on the screen can hold a teeny candle next to The Big Fella. My Dad took me to see Godzilla 1985: The Legend is Reborn when it came to our local theater and I remember the delight of seeing the green monster knock over buildings and battle “The Super X.” That perfectly cheesy movie downsized the screen time of the humans, a lesson Edwards should heed if he ever makes a sequel. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
You’re as multi-layered as an onion, as fresh as a new apple, and as nutritious and good for those around you as broccoli. Too bad most people lately have been focusing on the worst of you, assuming that you’ll make them cry, spoil everything you touch, and be a bad-tasting obligation. Sadly, there’s not much you can do. Overcoming people’s presuppositions and judgments about you is hard, since they won’t let you close enough to change their minds. Therefore, this week focus on stuff that will make you shine from a distance. If your actions are big, bold, and impressive enough, you’ll draw people to you despite their negative first impressions. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
You’re not naturally a politician. Kissing strangers’ babies and shaking hands on the campaign trail feels contrived. Since you can’t totally avoid the slightly odious tasks you’re required to do, dredge the back rooms of your multiple personality disorder and whip out those lesser-used personae who might actually be good at what you have to do. Yes, your tasks (and the parts of you that get off on doing them) are somewhat tedious, but believe me: showing off, yet again, how cleverly endowed and multifaceted you are can only help your reputation, not hurt it. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
All your challenges—even the petty irritating ones— are actually opportunities to show off just how patient and enlightened you’ve become. In the grand scheme of things, nothing truly bad will happen to you this week. In fact, most of what you’ll experience will ultimately be more positive than negative. You simply may have trouble seeing it that way, since this week’s presents are likely to come wrapped in annoying paper. Still, assume that the gifts inside are worth the layers of redundant and bothersome packaging and tear through it instead of refusing them altogether. You’ll be at least a little glad you did. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Sometimes it seems like the more self-actualized you get, the more single you are. Let me explain. All that self-knowledge is holding you back from most relationships, because it’s limiting your ability to settle for just anyone, to accept unreasonable compromises just so you don’t have to be alone. The more you don’t mind being alone with your lovely self, the less likely you are to make room for anyone who won’t add to your life. Be patiently alert, sweet Leo. All the so-so suitors in the world could never fill you up, but the magnificent dreamboat you’re waiting for will come, eventually. When s/he does, you’ll know, and, hopefully, be ready. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Negative thinking doesn’t have to be bad. For instance, when you’re making a block print, you have to focus on all the stuff youdon’t want in the final print, so you can carve it away, leaving only the good stuff. In that spirit, engage in a little reflection on your most, let’s say, unconstructive qualities. Only by noticing them and clearly defining them will you ever be able to rid yourself of them. It’s imperative that you do so, since the tight spaces you’ll deeply desire to slip into later this summer will require that you be at your leanest and most baggage-free state.
cue, your comrades-in-arms at your side, and don’t let the heart-burglar escape until s/he’s returned the stolen goods and been safely locked away.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
“Something’s not quite right.” That sentiment will haunt you all week. As you navigate various situations, your subconscious may nag you with the perception that your fly is open, shoelaces untied, or the suspicion of spinach in your teeth. Unfortunately, your ability to identify exactly what might be wrong is at a low. The bad news is you can look forward to a couple weeks of hearing about all the gaffes you made without quite noticing. The good news: If you don’t spend your whole week fruitlessly trying to track down and prevent your mistakes, the work you can do in spite of them will absolutely eclipse them. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
I almost don’t want to write you a horoscope this week, because it might give you the wrong idea; you’re flying so low under almost everyone’s radar right now that you’re not likely to get much attention or energy from anyone you don’t force yourself on. This could be a rough adjustment after the last few weeks, when people couldn’t stop focusing on you. Don’t worry, that unhealthy cycle of obsession/neglect will end soon. Don’t fight it. Just do your own thing and try not to take it personally when your phone doesn’t ring for a few days.
NEW CLASS: YIN YOGA AT 5PM ON WEDNESDAYS
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
You’re not the least emotional sign in the zodiac, but you are the least expressive of those emotions. That’s why you have trouble resolving the pity-party descending upon you this week. You’re likely to catch yourself whining and complaining about the most ridiculous things whenever you’re not paying attention and keeping your brattiest side strictly in check. Don’t hate yourself for this only slightly obnoxious behavior. Frankly, everyone has to vent sometimes. I think most people around you, instead of being annoyed that you’re bitching, will be relieved that you’re human, just like them. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
You can stop dangling your suffering and deep, philosophical misery as bait for unwise do-gooder prey. If catching the unwary in the steel jaws of your malign mental traps is your only agenda right now, you’ll be deeply disappointed this week, and hungry, too. It’s time to consider a new method of filling any potential gaps in your life. I can’t advise you on what will work best, but I can tell you this: self-destructive tendencies are at a yearlong low right now, so anything that banks on people doing what’s not good for them won’t be successful—but the opposite could work wonders.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Last week I hung out with two other writers. We compared notes on our various works-in-progress, and commiserated about how challenging bookwriting is. Then I thought of you, Pisces. Like me, too much of what you do happens in isolation. Even though it’s good work for you, it can be lonely or frustrating. This week, find some fellows suffering in the same boat as you and talk shop over a cold drink. I guarantee you’ll go back to work refreshed and more recharged than you have been in a long time. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
While he was in dress rehearsal for a stage production of The Three Musketeers, my friend’s car almost got stolen. Luckily, one of the stagehands glimpsed the theft-in-progress, and alerted the cast, who immediately rushed out to the parking lot, all bedecked in capes and foils, and surrounded the vehicle, swords pointed at the bewildered bandit, trapping him inside until the amused police arrived. Since you’re all dressed to play a hero, why not live the role? Something very precious and important to you is about to be absconded with. Rush out to its res-
Walking along minding your own business may not be enough to stay out of trouble this week. Determined passersby are likely to stick out legs to trip you or toss slippery banana peels underfoot. Now that I’ve warned you, you have a pretty good chance of avoiding a nasty spill. However, if it happens anyway, don’t make a big scene; that cloud’s likely to have a silver lining. I don’t want to give away the surprise, but I will say this: Sometimes you have to fall, just to see who comes along to help you get back up.
