ON THE COVER:

[The following five letters refer to our June 12, 2014 cover story “10 Essential Books About Maui.”] I would like to suggest that Maui Remembers by Gail Bartholomew and Bren Bailey is a far better history than Mowee by [Cummins] Speakman. Admittedly, I am the author but please do check it out. It is the standard as to Maui history and is in its 9th printing.

be better stewards of our resources. In 2008 when the EPA came to Lahaina, the community supported water re-use over injection wells. Water is a valuable resource. As Alan Arakawa said, to “not take a resource and use it where it can do the most good and have a very strong benefit is ludicrous.” Mayor Arakawa has not listened to his own advice, the science or the citizens. He spent hundreds of thousands of our dollars on a mainlandbased attorney instead of beginning the process of phasing out injection wells. Recently a federal judge has ruled against the Arakawa administration. The last four years have been a big waste of our time and resources, instead of using that money to improve the quality of life for our residents, he spent it on attorneys. If the county appeals and loses this federal case again, we will be paying millions of dollars to the US Treasury in fines for violating the Clean Water Act and also paying to fix what should have been addressed six years ago. Maui Nui is at an important crossroads. Much growth has already been approved, especially in West Maui and we need leaders who will work to install critical infrastructure quickly and efficiently. I am a keiki o ka aina, a mother, a wife, a lifeguard and emergency medical responder in Maui County. I ask you to please Vote Paltin in the mayoral primary on Aug. 9. - Tamara Paltin via email

Coconut Wireless ARAKAWA ENDORSES HANNEMANN FOR GOVERNOR

Paltin, the longtime Save Honolua activist and current Maui County lifeguard. “Candidates endorsed by the Sierra Club understand that a healthy environment is the foundation of a strong economy,” said Sierra Club Hawaii Vice Chair Roberta BrashearKaulfers in the June 12 press release. “We are particularly interested in candidates who will fight to make sure our utility (HEI) allows greater levels of rooftop solar onto the grid.” According to the press release, the endorsements came about after organization officials reviewed candidates’ environmental voting records and the candidates themselves filled out “detailed surveys.”Those receiving a two-thirds majority vote from at least two Club committees of elected leaders got the seal of approval.

GLENN CORREA LEAVES MAUI COUNTY PARKS DEPT.

Hannemann, Arakawa & Chang

According to the press release, Arakawa and Hannemann have known each other “for more than three decades.” I mean, look at that photo of Arakawa, Hannemann and Les Chang, Hannemann’s lieutenant governor running mate: those guys are buddies (though to be honest, the photo does make it look like Hannemann has about four hands). For his part, Hannemann said in the press release that he’s “very humbled and pleased” to get the endorsement from Arakawa. The endorsement isn’t that surprising, given that Arakawa endorsed Hannemann’s ultimately fruitless 2012 bid for Hawaii’s 2nd District Congressional seat (Democrat Tulsi Gabbard, a relative newcomer, creamed him in the Democratic primary). In fact, Hannemann, who lost each of the last two elections he entered by 20 points or so, is running this year as a member of the new Hawaii Independent Party. The official announcement of the endorsement took place in–I kid you not–the Kalihi headquarters of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO). Because, you know, having the cops back you is a guarantee of political success, right?

Paltin

“As respected Parks Employees I wanted to let all of you know that Director Glenn Correa has retired from Parks as of the end of the day yesterday, Thursday June 12,” Savage wrote. “His dedication to bettering our department and thus our community for over 36 years is tremendously appreciated and will be missed. Thank you all again for everything you do and how you continue to serve our community.” In fact, in his official press release on Correa’s departure, which was sent out at 6:30pm on June 17, County Communications Director Rod Antone–who, like Savage, has always described Correa’s absence from the department as a “personnel matter”–did not use the word “retire.” Instead, he said that Correa “tendered his resignation on June 12, 2014.” Antone’s press release also noted that Correa has been a fixture in the County of Maui for a long time: “Correa has served in the department for 32 years,” Antone wrote. “He was appointed as Deputy Parks Director from 1999-2002 and then later as Parks Director during Mayor [Alan] Arakawa’s first term from 2003-2006. In 2010, Correa came out of retirement and was appointed to serve again as Parks Director.”

On June 12, Sierra Club’s Hawaii chapter announced their endorsements in the 2014 election. The list of Maui County candidates who got the nod was largely expected, though there were a few surprises. For instance, in 2012, the Sierra Club endorsed 5th District State Senator Shan Tsutsui, 6th District State Senator Roz Baker and 7th District State Senator J. Kalani English. This year, none of those individuals won the Sierra Club’s endorsement (though Tsutsui has moved over to the Lt. Gov.’s office, the Club made no endorsement in that race). Instead, the Sierra Club has opted to endorse current 5th District State Senator Gil Keith-Agaran and Democrat Terez Amato, who is challenging Baker in the 6th District State Senate race. In local house races, the Sierra Club is back-

There are a dozen people running for Hawaii Governor this year (including Democrat Neil Abercrombie, who despite low poll numbers would apparently like a second term), but Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa has apparently already chosen his favorite: former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. “I know in my heart of hearts that Mufi Hannemann is the best administrator,” Arakawa said in a June 13 press release from Hannemann’s campaign. “He is very trustworthy and can be depended upon to do what he says he is going to do… Mufi, as a former Mayor understands what it takes at the ground level. He has served several governors, and he has the executive experience to address these deficits. Mufi is very smart and a man of his word who truly cares about the people of Hawaii.”

ing just two candidates: James “Kimo” Apana (who as Maui County Mayor more than a decade ago made quite the name for himself as a friend to land development) who’s challenging 9th District Representative JustinWoodson, and 11th District Rep. Kaniela Ing. Of course, there was no surprise in the endorsement for Maui County Mayor. The environmental organization chose Tamara

Maui County Parks Department Director Glenn T. Correa, who was placed on administrative leave back in February while the Maui Police Department investigated the department, has “retired” from the County of Maui, Parks Dept. Deputy Director Brianne Savage said in an email to county employees obtained by Mauitime. Here’s the text of the email Savage sent out to Parks Dept. employees on Friday, June 13:

Overheard “She drank an entire bottle of tequila. Granted, it was only about this full, but that’s still a lot of tequila.”

Correa

State Campaign Spending Commission records show that over the last five years (the extent of their online database), Correa donated $3,871.79 to Arakawa’s political campaigns. Though Antone’s press release noted that Savage “assumed duties of interim Parks Director immediately after Correa’s resignation,” she’s basically been doing his job ever since he first went on paid administrative leave. Maui Police spokesman Lt. William Juan did not respond to my inquiry on the status of the police investigation into Correa by press time. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

STATE LIBRARIAN RICHARD BURNS TO RETIRE

POLICE UNION BACKS MAYOR ALAN ARAKAWA FOR REELECTION That’s right, folks: Tenari Ma‘afala, the head of the all-powerful state police union who has worked long hours to make sure Hawaii residents aren’t able to see the disciplinary records of cops and who loathes our state’s new law legalizing same-sex marriage so much that he testified before the state Legislature last year that he would refuse to enforce it, has thrown his support (once again) behind Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa. “Mayor Arakawa has always been supportive of the needs of the Maui Police Department and understands that police officers need resources to protect our communities,” said Ma’afala, the president of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO), in a June 16 press release from Arakawa’s campaign. “We welcome another four more years under his administration.” And, of course, Arakawa’s campaign manager was only too happy to accept the endorsement. “The Friends of Alan Arakawa campaign appreciates the confidence that our unions have placed in Mayor Arakawa

“Hawaii’s 50 libraries are strategically located throughout our State and are a vital information and community resource,” said Board of Education Chairman Don Horner in the June 12 news release. “Under Richard’s leadership and our board’s planning process, we have positioned our libraries to become more communities [sic] gathering spaces that also provide access to technology, vocational training, and are a resource for digital literacy.” A state Board of Education selection committee will now begin a “local and national search” for a new State Librarian, in hopes of filling the position by the time Burns leaves. -Anthony Pignataro ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

an Associate in Science Degree in Human Services and the University of Hawaii Board of Regents Award for Public Service. She was also the winner of the district award and a runner-up for the region award. April Mae Companero, Elizabeth Cunningham, Gemma Hanson, Aristina Ora-a and Sharmaine Pasalo received the club’s Sharon Okumura Nursing Awards at this year’s event. The club donates $2,500 each year to the University of Hawaii Foundation, in the name of Sharon Okumura, to distribute to students who are looking for financial assistance to complete the Maui nursing program. The Violet Richardson Award went to Shantel Longboy, who volunteers much of her time with Best Buddies Maui. The Violet Richardson Award, named after the president of the first Soroptimist club, honors girls who are making a difference through volunteer service. The $500 cash award was distributed between Longboy and Best Buddies. Recent Maui High School graduate Alexandra Pardico was awarded $1,000 for the club’s Youth Citizenship Award. Pardico graduated at the top of her class and plans to attend Gonzaga University and major in biology.

The Hawaii State Public Library turned 101 in February. For the last eight of its years, Richard Burns has served as State Librarian. On June 12, he announced that he would retire at the end of this year. “Under Burns’ leadership, HSPLS expanded public service days and hours, improved and enlarged collections, increased the number of free public programs and services, further developed traditional and print collections while moving forward into the wireless, e-book and digital arenas, and heightened the value the library system provides for users across the state,” stated a June 12 press release from the state Library. “HSPLS has laid the foundation for future development and success, and is well-positioned to provide patrons with the resources they will need to achieve academically, build their futures in the world of technology, prepare themselves for employment in the modern workplace and lead engaged, fulfilling lives.” Though we often think of public libraries as buildings with stacks of paper books, a dozen of Burns’ 17 accomplishments highlighted in the June 12 press release dealt with digital technology. Such as:

hardware grant with the BTOP grant to install more than 780 new public access computers and workstations” • “E-book and audiobook collections now include more than 40,000 licensed items”

TOO CUTE! Marking Japan’s latest unfathomable social trend, two paperback photo books -- both consisting only of portraits of the rear ends of hamsters–have experienced surprising and still-growing printing runs. Japanese society has long seemed easily captured by anything considered “kawaii” (or “cute”), according to a May Wall Street Journal dispatch, and a representative of one book’s publisher called his volume “delightfully cute.” “I can’t stop smiling,” he said, “when I see these butts.” The two books in print are “Hamuketsu” (hamster buttocks) and “Hamuketsu–So Cute You Could Faint.” A third, “The Original Hamuketsu,” was set to debut in June.

NOT A GOOD DEATH Another driver died after being unable to dodge his own vehicle. A 58-year-old man was hit by his SUV in New York City in June after he double-parked and was opening the door on the passenger side and realized that the vehicle was still in reverse gear. He tried to jam one foot onto the brake but hit the gas instead, causing the car to jump backward, ejecting him, and pinning him between the SUV and a van parked alongside. The man suffered a heart attack and died as his vehicle broke free and drifted across the busy Manhattan intersection of Madison Avenue and East 49th Street.

DEAD OR DEEP MEDITATION? A renowned Hindu guru, Shri Ashutosh Maharaj, in his 70s, passed away in January (so concluded police in Jalandhar, India), but His Holiness’ disciples have refused to release the body, keeping it in a commercial freezer, contending that he has merely drifted into the deeper form of the meditation for which he is well-known–and will return to life when he is ready. (The guru’s religious order, not coincidentally, is a real estate powerhouse in the Punjab region and on nearly every continent, and the guru’s family is certain the “meditation” is a ruse to allow the Ashram’s continued control of the financial empire.)

GREAT, THE POST OFFICE HAS GUNS After the U.S. Postal Service finalizes its purchase of “small-arms ammunition,” it will become only the most recent federal agency to make a large purchase of bullets for its armed agents (who are perhaps more numerous than the public realizes). In the last year or so, reports have surfaced that the Social Security Administration ordered 174,000 hollow-point bullets, the Department of Agriculture 320,000 rounds, Homeland Security 450 million rounds (for its 135,000 armed agents), the FBI 100 million hollow-points, and even the National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration 46,000 rounds. In May, the Department of Agriculture added an order of submachine guns and body armor.

GOOD PARENTING Police in Lincoln, Nebraska, tracking down a call about a missing three-year-old boy downtown, managed to locate him in the type of place where other toddlers have turned up after briefly escaping the sight of their parents: inside a toy vending machine. The boy had crawled up through the toy-release slot of the Bear Claw and was safely, joyously playing among the bin of colorful stuffed animals at Madsen’s Bowling & Billiards.

FIGHTING FIRE(FIGHTERS) In the second such incident reported here in four months, an overenthusiastic police officer handcuffed and detained a firefighter working a 911 call, ostensibly because the firefighter refused to stop work and go move his fire truck to the officer’s satisfaction. Like the earlier incident in California, the unequivocal state law in Louisiana makes it illegal for anyone to interfere with a firefighter on an emergency call, and the officer from the New Roads, La., Police Department in principle faces a stiff fine and possible jail sentence.

FAMILY VALUES Orthodox Judaism requires a divorcing spouse to obtain the permission of the other via a document called a “get,” leaving much power in the hands of the responding spouse–and leading to an occasional resort to trickery or violence to persuade an uncooperative spouse. In May, Lakewood, N.J., Rabbi Mendel Epstein, his son and three other men were indicted for scheming to use electric cattle prods on behalf of wives against recalcitrant husbands. (Four other men in the alleged scheme have already pleaded guilty.) According to prosecutors, Rabbi Epstein has been implicated in other over-the-top efforts to obtain gets, in 2009 and 2010, and the indictment charges the 2013 episode also involved kidnapping, surgical blades and a screwdriver.

MUST HAVE BEEN A PRETTY BIRD Emergency crews in the U.K. once again came under criticism in June when dozens of police and firefighters, in three trucks and using a cherry-picker, blocked off a busy street in Cheltenham for an hour so they could rescue and release a bird (a “rook”) caught in netting on top of a small apartment building. Bonus irony: The building’s owner had installed the keepaway netting for the sole purpose of discouraging rooks from roosting and nesting, as they were soiling neighborhood rooftops. ■

o the hippies I had the displeasure of sitting next to on the plane: First, what do you find so wrong with showering? You smelled like rotting mold and I had to endure it for nearly six hours. Second, I’m all about free speech but did you have to drop the F bomb and talk about drug use so loudly and excessively? There were keiki around and elders. But to put the icing on the cake, before we had even left the Mainland you asked, “Do you know where to get food stamps? I hear you can get them real easy and get them the next day.” Honestly, if you need food stamps, you shouldn’t be flying to the islands. Food stamps are for people who need them, not freeloaders like yourself. You were clearly young and physically able to make it on your own. So please quit living off the rest of us hard workers. But I still can’t figure out why, after enduring six hours of your BS, I let you ride in the back of my friend’s truck to Paia. Of course, the first words out of your mouth were, “Dude, can you f— with the cops” as you flipped of the airport police. Brah, if I knew what was going on in the back I would have jumped out, beaten your ass and tossed you to the curb. Welcome to Maui–now go back home!

THE KI AKIDO

MASTER

WE LOOK AT MAUI

KI AKIDO SENSEI CHRISTOPHER CURTIS

T

he only real choice that a person can make in life is to be present in the moment. That’s according to Christopher Curtis, the head instructor of Maui Ki Aikido Shunshinkan Dojo and Chief Instructor of the Hawaii Ki Federation. With all of the choices people face everyday–ranging from what to wear to whom to marry–can living in the moment truly enhance a person’s life? “We are all creatures of conditioning,” says Curtis. “We imagine that we make choices, like this kind of drink or food instead of that kind, this religious or political group instead of another. However, those ‘choices’ are really just reactions controlled by our past conditioning. The only real choice that we can make is whether to be present in this moment or not. Aikido has provided me with the opportunity to practice this.” Curtis Sensei (who looks a little like Sir Alec Guinness in Star Wars) has not always lived in the now. As a young adult, he wondered how to meet life’s traditional needs. Yet he had an underlying desire to understand human nature. He says for as long he can remember, he wanted to understand what makes humans act the way they do. So he decided to study theater arts in college in hopes of understanding the essence of humanity—and provide the essentials of adult life. “I chose acting as a way to find access to this mystery, and get all of my obsessive needs met–fame, fortune, etc.–at the same time,” Curtis says. “To this end, I attended Carnegie Mellon University, which at the time was one of the most prestigious theater arts school available in the US.” Today, Curtis’ life is a far cry from the bright lights of Broadway. The long-time Maui local and grandfather to three is responsible for guiding all of the Ki-Aikido teaching efforts in Hawaii. He’s written several books about Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido (the way of Mind Body Unification), which is commonly known as Ki-Aikido. He teaches throughout the Mainland and is the official advisor for Ki Society dojos in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. Ilima Loomis, Spirituality & Health magazine’s managing editor and a long-time student of Curtis, holds her Sensei’s experience in high esteem. “Curtis Sensei has been invited to teach Aikido across the Mainland and as far away as Europe and Russia, so it is an honor to call him my teacher, and I feel really lucky to be able to train with him every day,” Loomis says. “He and several of our instructors and students also travel to Japan at least once a year to study and train at Ki Society headquarters, so the quality of instruction at our dojo remains very high and is very consistent with the way Aikido is taught in Japan.”

Curtis was born in 1944 in Upland, California. He graduated from college with a BFA degree in acting and playwriting. He first encountered Aikido in 1969 while working with the Open Theater Company in New York. While preparing for a role, he received personal instruction from Yoshimitsu Yamada Sensei, a student of the late Koichi Tohei Sensei–the tenth Dan aikidoka and founder of the Ki Society and its style of Aikido, officially known as Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido. Curtis says that first exposure to Tohei Sensei’s teachings left a deep impression.

level is useful and important,” Curtis says. “I am the Chief Instructor for the HKF, and as such, my responsibility is to encourage and communicate the practice of Tohei Sensei’s teachings for those in Hawaii.”

in Japan and throughout the United States, South America and Europe. “Aikido is an experiential practice, not merely intellectual or cognitive,” Curtis says. “Therefore this kind of personal contact, constantly receiving the ‘feel’ of what the teacher is experiencing, is a great help in moving forward... so I was very fortunate to be able to otomo for Shinichi Suzuki Sensei.” Curtis also has spent several years working on special training sessions and self-development with the esteemed KiAikido founder Tohei Sensei. Loomis lauds the value of the Sensei’s experience working closely with Suzuki Sensei and Tohei Sensei. “Our dojo was founded in 1953 and is the oldest Aikido dojo in the United States,” she says. “Curtis Sensei was the student of our dojo’s founder, Shinichi Suzuki Sensei, and he trained with the founder of Ki-Aikido, Koichi Tohei Sensei. It’s a really special experience to be able to train at a dojo with such deep roots, history and tradition, and Curtis Sensei upholds and honors all of that.” Today, Curtis continues as the head instructor of Maui Ki Aikido (formerly Wailuku Aikido Club) as well as Chief Instructor of the statewide Hawaii Ki Federation, an organization he was instrumental in establishing. “For a number of years, the four major islands maintained their own separate Ki Societies, meeting together only when Koichi Tohei Sensei would come from Japan to teach,” Curtis says. “[Tohei Sensei] felt strongly that each island group was developing their own criteria for teaching and testing, and he saw that the essence of his teaching was becoming deleted by these separate efforts.” Tohei Sensei asked Curtis if he would be willing to establish a new Hawaii Ki Federation to unify all of the islands’ Aikido groups, with the idea of preserving his teachings and improving the togetherness of these individual groups. The new HKF–encompassing dojos located on Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island–began officially on Jan. 1, 2000, and Curtis says it’s been successful in its efforts. “The purpose of our training is to recognize and experience being one with the Universe, so any and all work directed towards unification or non-separation on any

Not long into his theater career, he realized that the performing arts would not provide answers to his life-questions. “While my career in acting was only in its infancy, I already was beginning to notice that I was not discovering the depth of satisfactory understanding that I had always been seeking,” Curtis says. Even though he was launching a successful theater career in New York, he says he was very dissatisfied with his personal life. So at the age of 25, he left the theater world and moved to the hills of California, where he lived alone in solitude from 1969 through 1972 to concentrate on meditation and self-development. “I left acting and entered a three-year spiritual retreat or hermitage,” Curtis says. During that time, he lived alone, communicating with the teacher that was guiding his inner exploration only through handwritten letters–no Internet yet. “I was living a life of austerity and meditation,” he says. “This period of my life was very helpful in resolving personal issues and providing insights into my human condition; however, even though three years of meditating eight to 12 hours a day may seem extreme, it provided me only with a beginning or foundation for further exploration. At the end of the three-year period, I told my teacher that I wanted to become a permanent recluse and lead a life of meditation and private study. However, he said to me, ‘No, you have done that in many past lifetimes. In this lifetime, your task is to become utterly free while leading a life in public, marriage, children, job, etc.’” Soon after that conversation, Curtis says he discovered Aikido. He moved to Maui in 1972 and began his formal training with the late Shinichi Suzuki Sensei in 1974. He subsequently became Suzuki Sensei’s otomo, which literally means humble assistant. “Being assigned as otomo to the teacher in Aikido is considered a great honor and is a much sought after position,” Curtis says. “It is in this kind of position, with constant proximity to the teacher, that the real learning takes place.” As Suzuki’s otomo, Curtis accompanied the Sensei when he traveled to teach seminars

One of the major differences between Tohei Sensei’s Ki-Aikido and the Aikido organization known as the Aikikai is the emphasis on the principle of ki. “In Aikido, when we use the word ‘ki’ we are referring to that which the universe itself is made of,” Curtis says. “It is not considered to be either matter or energy, but that which both of these arise from. As such, we can just say that ki is ‘mind’ in its ultimate sense.” Tohei Sensei, formerly the chief instructor of the Hombu Dojo (the headquarters of Aikikai), wanted Aikido to focus on exercises to both cultivate and test ki in the daily Aikido practice, according to the Wikipedia page on Akido. That different philosophy motivated Tohei Sensei to officially split from Aikikai in 1974 and create Ki-Aikido and Ki-Society to teach his own ki style of Aikido. Even though Aikido is a martial art like karate, judo or kung fu, Curtis says the practice is not about learning how to overcome others. The main difference between Ki-Aikido and other martial arts is that Ki-Aikido is not a sport, he says. “There is no competition, no effort to overcome an opponent,” Curtis says. “We emphasize that the only true victory is victory over the self, and its concerns with personal gain overriding all other concerns. If we want to be truly compassionate and useful to ourselves and to others, then we must learn to let go of this obsessive emphasis on personal satisfaction at any cost.” Aikido begins and ends with the premise that mind and body are essentially one phenomenon, looked at from two different perspectives: mental and physical. Loomis agrees. “I don’t think I can express this any better than he did,” she says. In Hawaii, as well as around the world, Curtis trains both instructors and students. “I am always training those at all levels,” he says. “Of course, those who are the top instructors in Europe have more access to this teaching, since they hang out with me much more; but I also teach the very beginning levels as well. Some people attend my seminars who have never actually practiced before.” Curtis says the importance of a teacher is three-fold. “First, he or she shows the result of this kind of practice,” he says. “When you

interact with the teacher, you can experience what it’s like to dive deeply into this moment and leave behind all petty thoughts, needs, and fears. Secondly, the teacher can show you how to experience life completely in this way. And finally, the teacher helps you to remove the obstacles that stand in the way of such practice for you.” Loomis says Curtis’ allegiance to his students is admirable. “What I appreciate most about Curtis Sensei is his deep care for his students and his dedication to support us in our training,” Loomis says. “He is someone who takes his role as ‘teacher’ very seriously and honors his commitment to his students.” In addition to teaching, Curtis literally “wrote the book” about Ki-Aikido. He said that in the early days of his training, he noticed that no one had ever collected all of the basic teaching and practice guidelines of Ki-Aikido in one place. “When I mentioned this to my teacher on Maui, Shinichi Suzuki Sensei, he said, ‘So get busy and do it!’” So in 1985, Curtis published the first edition of Ki-Aikido On Maui, A Training Manual. According to Curtis, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, many students began asking if he could write a book that was not a dojo-oriented training manual–a book that examined how the practice of Ki-Aikido related to everyday life. So in 2005, he published the first edition of his book Letting Go, Talks on Aikido. Both books are now published in Russian and German, and Letting Go will soon be translated into Spanish. The ideas from his Letting Go book are featured in monthly “Ki Talks” at the Shunshinkan Dojo on Maui. He also broadcasts the talks via podcasts, which can be downloaded from his webpage Curtissensei.com. Curtis Sensei’s dedication to teaching and spreading the philosophy of Ki-Aikido has taken him on a path that is far different from his college-quest of fame and fortune. But it’s not a career path; in fact, Curtis has never taken any money for teaching Aikido. “I own a successful landscape design, construction, and maintenance company on Maui called Chris Curtis Landscapes,” he said. “This has provided me with a sufficient income to marry and have four children, two of whom are now working with me in this company and will one day take it over.” ■

Later he opened Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop in Oluwalu. By 2012, he achieved national fame by duking it out on Top Chef’s Season 10. In the end, he was a finalist winning fan favorite. Later came the awards: James Beard Finalist, Governor’s Commendation and Food and Wine’s Best New Chef in Northwest and Pacific for 2014. Top Chef and accolades opened lots of doors for Simeon, but he says he really just wanted to raise his family–with his wife Janice and four kids: Asher (born this year), Quinn, Peyton and Chloe, on Maui. We caught up over a bottle of Shichi Hon Yari Junmai–the MiGRANT menu has a full list of spirits, craft beers, imported and domestic beers and sakes from small artisan producers in Japan. The restaurant’s cocktails follow craft with a Filipino edginess. The Migrant Mule, for instance, has vodka, ginger ale, Pimms and candied ginger, while the Paquaios Punch has rum and tropical fruits. Even more exotic is the Palawan Press, which has hibiscus Absolute, Thai basil, coconut water and OJ, and the Manila Smash, which has melon juice, calamansi, tequila and mint. Our first course involved tasting veggie dishes like the Blistered Shishito peppers with Hidden Valley Ranch and quinoa furikaki. ou ever wish you could just show up at a chef’s family dinner and taste what they’re eating? I’m always asking chefs what goes on in their home kitchens. At Migrant, Chef Sheldon Simeon’s newest restaurant, you don’t have to wonder. That’s because Simeon simply put all his favorites, inspired by home cooking, on the menu. So much so that his de facto slogan for the restaurant is “Come My House Eat.” Simeon is bringing a new face and personality to the meaning of celebrity chef. cretive about his new projects when I spoke with him that July. But in August 2013, he emerged at Mala Ocean Tavern doing a pre-fixe dinner benefit. These were the first hints of a partnership with Maui’s acclaimed and respected Chef/restauranteur Mark Ellman. MiGRANT opened at the end of 2013 in the Mala Wailea lounge, located in the Wailea Marriott. Simeon says his concept was izakaya dining, but added his own Filipino dishes and some modern culinary touches. That translated to a very down-to-earth menu–basically fine dining local style–that shows off his unconditional love of pork and steak. Consider it a melting pot of comfort food, but with a few contemporary touches. He calls it “modern local cuisine.” “My inspiration was homage to the immigrants who settled the islands,” says Simeon. “My grandparents immigrated

here from the Philippines. I was raised among the immigrant population on the Big Island. I was influenced by the Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Korean and Filipino food I grew up with.” I rounded up a few girlfriends for a girls’ night out at MiGRANT during Wailea Restaurant Week, and we were star-struck by the food. Simeon says that one of his proudest moments is seeing all the locals come eat his food in Wailea. Considering that super-agent Shep Gordon–the star of the new documentary Supermensch–is a part-owner, it’s no wonder that the restaurant’s been equally well received by celebrities in its first six months. Our dinner began on the open air balcony that overlooks the resort pools and coastline. The dining room backdrop was a mind-blowing sunset, cooled with a rustling breeze. The indoor dining area also

sauce tempered the heat. In the Choy Choi dish, seasoned bak choy and choi sum were steamed together and topped with crunchy radish. Our final salad, called the Bottom of the Plate Lunch, had shredded cabbage with a warm kalbi jus dressing on top. It hinted at the familiar warm salad from the bottom of your plate lunch but was a stand-alone dish. Starters on the menu range from $8$11 and oyster shooters are $4. I missed the Kumu Farms kale salad this time but I won’t pass up its namasu, pumpkin seeds and miso dressing on my next visit. “Bottom of the Plate Lunch is my most unique dish,” says Simeon. “It is such a simple and delicious dish. Crazy delicious.” True to izakaya style, the menu is developed to eat family-style, and the items pair well with beer and cocktails. It’s congenial Continued on page 15

and veggies in a rich dynamite topped with a sweet soy glaze and sesame. The ahi is simply avo and ahi with lemon olive oil and shoyu. For me, the Tonkatsu revives the idea of pork chop. He starts with glorious cuts of prime Duroc pork chop, fries them in panko, adds a bacon cream sauce and then tops them with a bountiful bunch of micro greens from Napili Flo Farm. It’s rich but perfect. My favorite piece was the bone in chunk, because I could keep dredging it in the sinful sauce. But the menu’s most popular protein, despite Simeon’s love of pork, is the steak. There, the flavors of Vietnam grace the grilled steak bites with watercress and pickled shallot.

‘Jersey Boys’ Clint Eastwood takes on Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons Jersey Boys ★★★★★ Rated R / 134 Min.

C

lint Eastwood’s career as a director has always been impressive for the variety of material he chooses, as well as the success rate of his efforts and the risks he takes. Sometimes his risky choices result in surprise masterpieces, like Letters from Iwo Jima, Unforgiven and his directorial debut, Play Misty For Me. His latest effort is another unlikely choice for the former Man With No Name and it falls alongside White Hunter, Black Heart and J. Edgar as an ambitious but underwhelming film that fails to match the electrifying potential of its subject matter. Eastwood gravitates towards making films that are offbeat, unique and certainly unexpected; he shares this quality with the late John Huston, whose later films were also hit and miss but often displayed a fearless, lets-see-if-this-works, gung-ho spirit to filmmaking. Eastwood’s style is subdued, to say the least, but even his lesser films show an older but still crackling master filmmaker willing to take a real chance. Jersey Boys is based on the wildly popular Broadway musical, based on the life of Frankie

Valli, whose catalog of hit songs make this one of those musicals where everyone knows the songs before they walk into the theater. Remaining extremely faithful to the stage musical, the story shows Frankie Valli’s rise from obscurity to national attention, as his group, The Four Seasons, ride a wave of popularity from three number one hits. Their Achilles heel is Tommy DeVito, a selfdestructive group member whose behavior seems both a cry for help and an effort to sabotage everyone else’s hard efforts. The characters frequently break the fourth wall, talking right to the camera; this worked fine on stage, when the audience was happy to accept exposition while a scene was unfolding. In this movie, the talking-to-the-audience approach never feels anything but distracting. The reliably classy, professional efforts of the director and his production are strangely hit and miss. There’s a knockout moment where Valli enters a building in search of recording space and representation: the camera travels, in an unbroken shot, with Valli up a dozen stories outside the building.Yet, much of the film has an ugly, washed out look, as though filmed on an overcast day. Early jokes about the story’s inclusion of Joe Pesci (who doesn’t play himself) feel

America's first glam band

dialed down, as though Eastwood feared going all the way making an in-joke. Yet, he doesn’t shy away from showing himself in an old Rawhide clip, nor allowing co-star Christopher Walken to cut up in ways that are typically quirky. Even with the great music and a second act that gathers some momentum, most of this is rather dull. John Lloyd Young makes a soulful Valli, but the other actors give highly mannered portrayals, coming off like Goodfellas impersonators. On stage, the stereotypes were appropriately big but blown up onto a movie screen, it comes off like a stream of baddabing-badda-bang, New Joisy clichés. Rock of Ages, another recent Broadway musical turned movie with a jukebox-ready soundtrack, was also uneven but at least had a couple of knockout musical numbers. Here,

the soundtrack trumps the presentation, with even That Thing You Do! providing a lighter, quick-footed and better take on this familiar material. The big “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” number should soar but strangely doesn’t (I blame the overzealous orchestral accompaniment). There are multiple endings, intended as a tribute to the film’s stage origins, that come across like indecision in how to properly end the movie. Fans of the stage show and Valli may walk away happy, as this isn’t a bad film. It’s wildly out of step with the rest of the summer movie offerings, coming across like a counter-programming anomaly in a sea of CGI explosion fests.Yet, as a fan of the stage musical (which I recently saw in Las Vegas), as well as Eastwood, this comes up short and should have been sensational.■

Horoscope

Sign Language GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You’re so good at saying just the wrong thing at the worst time, consequently totally aggravating a situation that, say, a politically-minded Aquarius could have defused with a kind word and a joke. At the same time, I’m aware that I can’t increase your diplomacy in one measly paragraph. You do have one recourse, however: parlay your tactlessness into an advantage. Every weakness can be played as a strength. For instance, those who know you’re incapable of subtle manipulations might trust (and adore) you all the more, knowing you’ll never screw them around. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

At first, when parts of your world started running backwards, it was an awkward transition. How to resolve this clock with that one, running in reverse? (Forget arriving on time anywhere.) Lately, however, with enough of your world now turned on its head—at least 51%, to be exact—it’s all the shit that’s still running the old way that’s out of place. Your new reality is the dominant one, so stop trying to maintain your old habits. They’ll no longer do you enough good to justify themselves. One of these habits—a repulsive dinosaur of a habit—will fight this, to the death. Screw it. No, better yet—just kill the damn thing. It’s long past time it went extinct.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

You’re slicker than an oil spill right now. Too many people already regard you as a devastating natural disaster, and dread letting you near their boyfriends, girlfriends, or children, for fear of having to scrub away the residue of that encounter for months to come. How can you minimize your environmental impact? Without being facile: by cleaning up your act. I don’t mean sacrificing all the ideals you’ve espoused for so long, but I believe you’re ready and able to actually take on some of the responsibility and commitment you’ve been avoiding, without losing any of those values. Do so this week—and people will welcome you into their lives, not shun you from them. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

This is as good as it’s going to get for a while. Some times are better than others for making quick progress or improving your lot in life. This week you’re likely to encounter incredible resistance when you try to move up in the world. Don’t give up entirely. Just cool it for a week or so. Bide your time and chill out. Instead of trying to force your way through, wait for the opening that’s bound to come. If you’re not exhausted from fruitlessly trying to forge ahead, then you’ll be able to rocket upwards with three weeks of pent-up force.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Even knowing what you know about the self-fulfilling nature of your self-perceptions, it’s hard to constantly believe in your own fabulousness. Although your ultimate goal should be absolute ego-freedom from others’ opinions, it’s okay to accept an outside boost every now and then to help you get back on track. Luckily, you have any number of admirers who’ve taken special notice of what you’ve done lately. Let them buy you dinner, but remember: these people are more than just founts of compliments. Anyone who’s willing to believe in and support your magnificence must be pretty great. While you’re graciously accepting their praise, make sure they know you know they’re hot shit, too. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Your ability to tell the truth is at an all time high. I’m not talking your usual crystal clarity, frankly revealing what you’re all about; I’m referring to your ability to tell the truth—and, by inference, the untruth—of what others are saying. This integrity instinct will come in the form of gut feelings or other visible omens which must be heeded if you’re to receive any benefit at all from my horoscope—even if they fly in the face of your rational intelligence, the advice of your friends, or your compassion. In other words, giving someone the benefit of the doubt could be the worst thing you could possibly do right now. Trust your gut! LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

If you have any superficial tendencies, you’d best at least temporarily discard them now—because the person you need the most so doesn’t look like you wish they did. If you can’t shed your prejudices more easily then they can shed their skin, you’re in big trouble, because it means you’ll have to go without the food that best nourishes you for a year, or longer. If, however, you can turn a blind eye to the petty value systems you were programmed with ages back, you’ll get as spiritually fat as your new lover or teacher just may be, in the flesh.

Clumsiness is your worst enemy this week. It sucks to be in danger of defeat by your own potential ineptitude, but it can’t be denied. Therefore, watch your step, Water Bearer. I’m not even that worried about you; you’re resilient. You’ll eventually recuperate from any missteps you make now—but will the people and things you break recover once you’ve crashed into them? Move slowly and carefully right now—if you can’t handle that, just stand still until I tell you it’s safe to move again. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You may wish for a Comfort Assistant, someone who’d discreetly follow you around attending to your every need. In addition to making sure you always had a delicious beverage on hand and that the ambient temperature was delightful, they’d perform a variety of other duties: You’d get foot massages every time you sat down. They’d intercept those you loathe, so you’d never have to directly deal with them. However wonderful all this may sound, I can’t help thinking it’d get tiresome after a while (albeit a long while). Because life is about doing stuff, don’t shirk any pie you can stick your fingers into. When it comes to either being uncomfortable or not experiencing anything at all, choose the former, not the latter. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You’re shedding worse than a golden retriever in high summer. The detritus you’ve been casting off has gathered in corners, piled in tall, flaky drifts against the walls, and populated the dust bunny homesteads beneath your bed. Discarded relationships, attitudes, forgotten friendships, unhealthy habits—they all lie pellmell around your apartment, office, and gym. I know you’re exhausted from your great efforts. But you’re not done; those bad habits and failed philosophies still litter your existence, even if they’re not actively in use. That’s like kicking heroin but leaving needles and paraphernalia everywhere. Get that shit out of your house before you’re buried in it. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

I have felt more of a kinship with you Scorpios this past year than with my own sign. I’ve watched my personal obsessions with sex and death wax and overflow. I’m not alone, either; many people are identifying with you lately. More people actually get what you’re all about than ever before. This is both bad and good. Bad because you may have to give up the I’ma-Deep-Loner-Who-No-One-Understands routine that you love so much. But good because your family of kindred spirits has just nearly doubled. Here’s another good thing: kindred spirits make great sex partners.

Do it right the first time. That’s the gist of the advice doled out by my favorite author, Neal Stephenson. He says it applies whether you’re writing fiction or computer code; it’s always harder to go back and try to debug faulty code or fix bad writing. This advice is relevant to you; specifically to the project you’ve just begun. Since you could do a slapdash, quickie job right now, then spend a period eight times as long fixing it, or you could take merely twice as long as the quickie version to nail your task perfectly (and never worry about it again), I recommend you choose the latter option.
