LOVED, HATED MANAO HANA HOU RADIO STORY As President of the Board of Directors of Mana’o Hana Hou Radio, I would like to take the opportunity to thank for your recent story about “the Rebirth” of the station (“Free Radio Redux,” June 26, 2014). After reading it I noted that no credit was given to the people who worked tirelessly with Tony to make all this happen, nor was any mention of those who gave selflessly with financial support to make this happen. While we appreciate Forest for his program and respect Don Woods, the entire schedule of programming would not be possible without an excellent cast of other passionate broadcasters that should be given their due. To add this to your story would

then give recognition to all those who made the new station possible, and all the broadcasters the recognition that they all deserve. We also must give credit to the volunteers that upgraded the current studio and those who helped in the move. Finally allow me to add my personal comment. When this undertaking started, the goal was to give the community of Maui a gift of great eclectic music that could not be found anywhere else on the Island. -Alan M. Sheps, via email

LOVED JERSEY BOYS, HATED REVIEW The critical comments given to the movie Jersey Boys by Barry Wurst, I must say, were the worst I’ve ever heard (“Jersey Boys,” June 19, 2014). Having seen it twice, with plans to see it a few more times, I am of the opinion that it was a fantastic movie all around. [It had] a fabulous selection of Valli’s musical hits and an extremely well done job by John Lloyd Young as well. Hats off to Clint Eastwood. Plus, this is not only my opinion, but everyone I spoke to coming out of the theater after the film raved about it as I have and also commented on the Wurst article as the “worst” they’ve ever heard. So, ignore the critic and go see the movie. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. -Cheri Staub, via U.S. Mail

Coconut Wireless NO ONE CARES ABOUT MAUI POLICE DISCIPLINE, RIGHT?

So last week, The Maui News published another of those regular but all-too infrequent summaries of Maui Police discipline against its own. On June 24, the paper reported that the department busted five cops in March and April of this year, ranging in punishment from letters of reprimand to a 10-day suspension and transfer–the latter of which fell on an officer for “breaching confidentiality and committing a criminal act in September.” As usual, none of the officers names are included in the story (to say nothing of the exact nature of the above “criminal act” that got one Maui PD officer in trouble).

I could find no mention of any disciplinary actions taken against MPD personnel (the minutes of the Commission’s June 18, 2014 meeting–when The Maui News presumably got their recent disciplinary information–are not yet online). In any case, the next summary of police discipline we get might have a bit more information. That’s because on June 20–four days before the above story came out–Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie signed SB 2591 into law. That bill “Requires additional detail and updating for annual reports to the Legislature of police misconduct” and mandates that the departments retain disciplinary records for 18 months. We’ll just have to wait and see whether that changes the way the Maui Police Department makes public information on internal

Do people care when this happens to cops?

This is, as we’ve reported before (“#MPDFAIL,” June 23, 2011), because state law protects the identities of police officers who’ve been disciplined by their department. It still mandates that departments provide regular (if vague) summaries of discipline, but it can keep the names of those charged confidential. Still, The Maui News story seemed a little thin for my taste, so I emailed Maui PD’s Lt. William Juan–their public information officer–asking him for a copy of the report The Maui News had used to prepare their June 24 story. His response surprised me: “This information was given during the Police Commission meeting,” he emailed on June 26. “There was no report. Only the statement that was provided by Maui News. The Police Commission meeting is open to the media if you want to attend.” My mistake was in assuming that the Maui PD was putting these summaries of internal discipline into writing. In fact, the information is apparently only given verbally during Maui Police Commission meetings. Which wouldn’t be too bad, I suppose, if the Maui Police Commission kept verbatim meeting minutes. But they don’t–they're just summaries. In any case, even going back 18 months,

disciplinary actions in a substantive way.

HOW DID THOSE LITTLE FIRE ANTS GET INTO THE ANDAZ RESORT? About three minutes after we ran last week’s story about how little fire ants were infesting the Andaz Maui Resort in Wailea (Coconut Wireless, June 26, 2014), questions from readers (and my colleagues) started rolling in. How did the ants get there? Where did they come from? These aren’t trivial questions. Considering the potential dangers little fire ants pose to

people and pets, it would be best if state and local agriculture officials not only contained the infestation (which seems to have happened) but also isolated the source of the ants so they don’t spread elsewhere (which does not seem to have happened). In its own June 21 story on the Andaz infestation, The Maui News reported some vague speculation from Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) Manager Teya Penniman, who initially refused to disclose the name of the Wailea hotel where the ants were found in the first place: “She said the little fire ants were found in the vicinity of dracaena palms, suspected of having been imported from the Big Island, where little fire ants have become well established since arriving there in 1999.” As far as who on the Big Island may have supplied the vegetation that contained the ants–or even if that’s how they arrived–no one can really say. When I asked Maggie Holmes, who handles public relations for the Andaz, she referred me to the state Department of Agriculture (DOA): “The Hawaii Department of Agriculture is doing the follow-up on the finding, so they would be the best source to answer your question,” she said. But the Hawaii DOA wasn’t much help either. “They [DOA inspectors] could not pinpoint how LFA got there,” said Janelle Saneishi, the state Department of Agriculture’s Public Information Officer, in a June 27 email. “It is a new hotel with new landscaping from different sources. It was confined to the landscaped area, so it’s a good guess that it arrived on some plant material. Sorry, can’t be be more specific.” State officials using phrases like “could not pinpoint” and “good guess” aren’t likely to calm down resident and visitors fears–especially when official government statements on little fire ants takes such an alarmist tone. Here’s an excerpt from the website Fireantfreemaui.org, which is sponsored by state and local governments and organizations: “Little fire ants (LFA) are devastating communities across the Pacific. Passive and deceitfully small in size, these South American imports pose a grave threat to Hawaii. They can deliver a painful sting, blind animals, and reduce biodiversity… If we do not stop the spread of the little fire ant we stand to lose much of our agricultural industry. We will lose our ability to grow our own food, enjoy our yards, and hike through the forest. Ground

nesting seabirds and sea turtle hatchlings will be attacked, along with many of our rare insect species. Once little fire ant is established, there is little hope of eradication.” That’s a terrifying scenario. It would be nice if the actions of state and local agriculture officials were as aggressive as their rhetoric.

BY THE NUMBERS: STATE CANDIDATE FILING FEES An interesting footnote to The Great Neldon Mamuad Abortive Mayoral Candidacy Trial Thing that happened last week in Judge Peter Cahill’s Second Circuit Courtroom concerns political candidate filing fees in the State of Hawaii. During the two-day hearing (which ended with Mamuad officially tossed off the ballot), Cahill said that he familiarized himself election laws and processes. And during that research, Cahill told the court on the last day of the hearing, he discovered that the fees the state Office of Elections charges people who run for office were “very different” from office to office–but not in the way he expected. It was clear that the finding amused Cahill, but the matter didn’t even rise to the level of side issue to the Mamuad matter, so Cahill moved on after about a minute. But after the trial, I went to the Office of Elections website to see the various fees for myself. They’re all there, buried in the 2014 Candidate’s Manual: U.S. Senator/Representative: $75 Governor/Lt. Gov: $750 State Senator/Representative: $250 Maui County Mayor: $500 Maui County Council: $250 So, if you want to run for the U.S. Senate–one of the most elite and powerful legislative bodies in the world, that will only cost you $75. But you think you have a shot at being Maui County Mayor? That’ll be $500. As Cahill noted, this says something about our state’s elective priorities. Of course, there are discounts available for state and local offices (Governor and below on the above list). Should candidates agree to sign on to the state’s “voluntary campaign expenditure limits,” then the Office of Elections will slash their filing fees to just 10 percent of the posted rates. (Candidates who declare themselves “indigent” can have their filing fees waived.) That discount seems great, but saving money up front by restricting your campaign spending could easily haunt you later. That seems to have been what went through Linda Lingle’s mind back in her unsuccessful 1998 governor’s run, when she decided to withdraw from the expenditure limits. According to an Oct. 10, 1998 Honolulu Star-Bulletin article, that required her to return more than $130,000 in public funds. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

Looking for a way to give back this summer? Starting on July 2, Hawaii Independent Energy began hosting their Fueling Dreams fundraising event to help benefit Special Olympics Hawaii. From July 2 through Aug. 5, participating Tesoro2Go gas stations will accept donations for Special Olympics Hawaii athletes. “It’s a way for the entire community to fuel the dreams of these athletes who work hard year-round so that they can proudly represent our state and our country at no cost to them or their families,” said Eric Lee, the general manager of Hawaii Independent Energy’s retail group, in a June 30 company press release. Since it started nine years ago, Fueling Dreams has raised $416,000. This year’s goal is to raise $34,000. “We are so thrilled to continue to work with Tesoro and the new Hawaii Independent Energy leadership to help fuel the dreams of our local athletes,” said Nancy Bottelo, Special Olympics Hawaii president and CEO, in the same news release. “For more than 20 years, the company has been one of the biggest champions of our athletes and the funds they provide is [sic] invaluable to allow our athletes to win and thrive on the playing field and in life.” As part of the fundraiser, everyone who donates to the cause will be entered into a drawing to win one of three Tesoro fuel cards, each worth $500. For donations of $5, you will receive one entry and for donations of $20, you will receive five entries. Donations are not required to enter the drawing. There are 28 participating Tesoro stations overall, including four locations on Maui:

California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo has a huge, 350-student “viticulture and enology” program, preparing its majors for an industry critical to the state’s economy (and with a venerable international cachet)–but puritanical state law continues to hobble it. Many in Cal Poly’s four-year winemaking program must arrange for a fifth year–after they turn 21–because, otherwise, faculty and administrators could be felons for “furnishing alcohol to a minor” when they assign students to taste their own class creations. The current California legislative session is considering allowing underage winemaking students to sip and spit.

GREAT EAR ART! Artist Diemut Strebe offered his 3D-printed re-creation of the famous ear of Vincent van Gogh for display in June and July in a museum in Karlsruhe, Germany–having built it partially with genes from a great-greatgrand-nephew of van Gogh–and in the same shape, based on computer imaging technology. (Van Gogh reputedly cut off the ear himself, in 1888, during a psychotic episode.) Visitors can also speak into the ear and listen to sounds it receives.

DO THEY CALL THEM MILKINATORS?

RESEARCHING BEAR FELLATIO

On dairy farms across the country, cows bizarrely queue up, without prodding, to milk themselves by submitting to $250,000 robots that have recently become the salvation of the industry. According to an April New York Times report, this advance appears to be “win-win” (except for migrant laborers watching choice jobs disappear)–more efficient for the farmer and more pleasant for the cow, which–constantly pregnant–usually prefers frequent milking. Amazingly, cows have learned the drill, moseying up to the precise spot to engage the robot’s arms for washing and nipple-cupping. The robots also yield copious data tracked from transponders worn around the cow’s neck.

Researchers from the Polish Academy of Sciences, writing recently in the journal Zoo Biology, reported witnessing 28 acts of fellatio by two orphaned male bears at a sanctuary in Kuterevo, Croatia–the firstever report of bear fellatio and the payoff from 116 hours of scientific observation over a six-year period. In each case, the researchers wrote, the older male was the receiver, and the researchers speculated that the episodes were less sexual in nature than a reflection of the bears’ “early deprivation of maternal suckling.”

THIS WEEK IN COW GAS Argentinian agricultural scientists in 2008 created the “methane backpack” to collect the emissions of grazing cows (with a tube from the cow’s rumen to the inflatable bag) in order to see how much of the world’s greenhouse-gas problem was created by livestock. Having discovered that figure (it’s 25-30 percent), the country’s National Institute of Agricultural Technology announced recently that it will start storing the collected methane to convert it to energy. In a “proof of concept” hypothesis, it estimates that about 300 liters of methane could power a refrigerator for 24 hours.

SCIENTISTS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN Bioengineers who work with Dictyostelium slime molds held the “Dicty World Race” in Boston in May for a $5,000 prize and intellectual adulation in August at the Annual International Dictyostelium Conference in Potsdam, Germany. The molds oozed down the 800-micrometer (0.0315 inches) track, lured to the finish line by ordinary bacteria that the molds normally enjoy. A team from the Netherlands beat out 19 others for the coveted prize. (Among the other “games” scientists play, mentioned in the same Nature.com story

THE FINE POINTS OF THE LAW Paul Stenstrom, 62, lived comfortably in his Palm Harbor, Florida, home from 2002-2014 without paying a penny of his $1,836 monthly mortgage bill, exploiting federal bankruptcy law that forces foreclosing creditors to back off once a debtor files for protection. Stenstrom and his wife filed 18 separate petitions in that 12-year period, according to an April Tampa Bay Times report, until a judge recently cut them off. The Stenstroms were spotted recently preparing to relocate–but Stenstrom said he was considering buying the Palm Harbor house back (since the price has dropped because of the foreclosure).

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Several “professional organizers” in New York City told a New York Post reporter in May that this summer is far busier than in years past for clients who need help packing their kids’ trunks for summer camp. One consultant, who charges $250 an hour, said it is as if moms fear that the slightest change from home life will stress out their little darlings. Some mothers’ attention to details include packing the same luxury bedding the campers sleep on at home, along with their special soap and candles and even separate plastic boxes to provide the cuties with more storage space. ■

h Screaming lady in the Lahaina Banyan Tree park! Every single night for the last several weeks we’ve listened to you hollering at the top of your lungs, vomiting epithets that would embarrass a sailor, all with your little dog barking along side you. It’s understandable if you get upset occasionally and need to vent. But the Banyan Tree Park, where there are keiki and adult locals and tourists who would like a peaceful and relaxing time, is not the best place for it. Why don’t you channel that noise in a more creative direction–like becoming a heavy metal lead vocalist named “Banshee.” Mahalo!

y with r o t s g n i Talk ecame b e h s w o out h Kawehi ab menon o n e h p c i mus a digital SSO BY JEN RU n an era of digital disruption for musicians, Hawaii-born artist Kawehi has found her edge. Her music has blossomed through videos on YouTube and Vimeo. She produces music with her computer and digital instruments–known in the industry as looping– and has become a one-woman show phenomenon, especially with the success of her “Heart Shaped Box” cover. She’s also formed part of her core following and created albums through Kickstarter projects and sells her own releases on Bandcamp.com. This Saturday, July 5, Kawehi will perform at the Millhouse as part of her national tour launching her new album Robot Heart. We spent some time asking her about going viral, her recent Kickstarter success and how it all compares to performing in real life. First off, you live in Kansas? Angeles for music–and after living there for 10 years, I was ready to leave. I think LA is a wonderful place when you’re young and needing that

drive and competition–it’s a great place to discover yourself. But I was ready for a quieter lifestyle, and my husband had stumbled on this beautiful recording studio out in Kansas that was incredibly cheap, and we were broke living out in Los Angeles. So we moved, and I love it here in Lawrence! When was your first gig as a performer? Man, I can’t even remember! I’ve done some shows when I was a teenager. I think my first performance was in high school at Brown Bags! I didn’t win. But as an adult, I think my first gig was at a bar in LA. I don’t remember much of it–I was so nervous. I remember having a lot of tequila, but the rest is pretty blurry! Were there times in your career where you questioned your decision to be a musician? Nope, never. There were times I thought we’d lose our house though–times where we were so

broke we were eating Top Ramen Saimin every day. But throughout all of that, I’ve never questioned being a musician. It’s my passion. There’s no Plan B for me. What inspires you to write songs or create mixes? I get inspiration from anything and everything. But I think it’s important to remember that you have to do the work, too. Some people just wait for inspiration to hit. Not me–I work at it every day. I set aside time every day to come up with a new idea. When did you start making videos, and why has that become an important to you as an entertainer? I realized after my first Kickstarter project–which failed miserably– that I needed content, and lots of it. So we started making videos, and I noticed that my fan base started to grow quickly. Nowadays with the Internet, every-

one’s so hungry for content. I can put up a new video and someone’s asking me five minutes later when the next one’s coming out. I think videos are a great way to reach a larger fan base–I’d say almost half of my fans come from outside the US. It really is amazing how many people you can touch through videos. You make the videos look so easy, like it’s just one take and they’re done. How do you do them, and are they really shot in your living room? Who decides if there’s wine or no wine? Some of them have lots of practice behind of it–well, most of them, really. But all the videos are shot in one take. I usually practice first how I’m going to perform the loop live, and then we shoot. My husband shoots all my videos–edits them, shoots them, does everything. All of them are shot in our house, unless we decide to put on a pig suit and dance in the middle of a field. But “Heart Shaped Box” was totally different. We literally had just ordered pizza

Your original “Telescope” hypnotizes me, and I can listen to it over and over. What are your favorite original songs to perform? Thank you! “Telescope” is fun to do. I love doing “Anthem” off of my new EP–lots of vocal layering. Or getting quiet with just my electric guitar and doing “20 Years.” I have fun doing all of my originals, it’s too hard to choose. Who inspired you to get into the entertainment business?

“Heart Shaped Box” was picked up by the digital press–there were articles in Esquire, Spin and HuffPo, just to name a few. What was that like? It’s still weird. I have never done this to be recognized, so when it finally happened, I was like, “What?” It was completely unexpected and I wasn’t prepared for it. Were you prepared for your Robot Heart Kickstarter project kicking ass? Tell me about that moment when you realized that your $3,000 goal was funded for $28,900, and what you’ll do with the extra funds. I thought it was a hoax. Seriously, I kept thinking, “there’s no way this is real.” I’ve done six Kickstarter projects and five of them were overfunded, but almost a thousand percent funded? No way. Doing these projects really shows how much people believe in you. I think that’s why they are so hard to do (besides the loads of work that goes behind it). You’re asking complete strangers to believe in you, so much so that they are willing to back you financially to make this dream of yours come true. It’s an incredible feeling. With the extra funds, I was able to throw some funds back into the community I live in. I had a local graphics designer put together the artwork for the CDs and DVDs. I was able to get a little help making the rewards–usually I have to hand-make every single thing. But this time, I had help! And being that I had four times the number of backers as I usually do, I was happy for it! I also get to tour and play for my fans live, throughout the country. That

is an incredible experience, and I couldn’t have done any of it without the support of the Robot Heart backers. You had done other Kickstarters, but this one seemed to take the cake. Was it the pink pig suit or robot theme? The theme definitely helped. That’s why I always have a theme to each project. It gives people something more than the music to get excited about. But really, it was the video going viral that took it to that next level. I think before “Heart Shaped Box,” my project was about 300 percent funded. And then with less than a week to go, the video tripled that amount. One of your Kickstarters funded a film. Is your USA, The Project tour documentary and live album completed?

What was your most memorable performance? I think this whole Summer Tour that I’m on is the most memorable. For the first time in my life, I’m playing to hundreds, thousands of people who are actually there to see me.That’s never happened before. It’s more terrifying; I really feel like I need to do my best. Because my fans are traveling far and wide to come out to see me play, I don’t want to disappoint them. But that feeling–getting out there and people are just so pumped to see you perform–it’s an incredible experience. How did you get involved in digital production, looping sounds/ music? Did you need an IT person or does that come naturally to you? I’ve always wanted to try looping, but never had the balls to do it. I was ready for a change–I got tired of just playing a guitar and singing. So I just jumped right in. No IT person: just a shit ton of practicing. Tech has been a big part of your music career, not just with your instruments and setup but also

It is! I did it specifically for those USA backers though, so we’ll have to see if it’ll become public:

Technology really gives me a sense of no limits, creatively. And that’s an incredible feeling to have. With the setup I have, the possibilities are endless. Will you have any advance copies of Robot Heart at the Hawaii shows? Yes, I will! Be sure to pick one up. What do you consider your greatest musical accomplishment? Doing all of this independently. No label, no management–no huge team behind me. Just my husband and myself. We’ve come a long way on our own. Will this be your first time performing in Maui? Yes! And I’m so stoked! ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more local events, visit: mauivents.com

Lucky backers! Tell me about growing up in Hawaii and how that affected and contributed to your being a musician. Growing up in Hawaii… Well, ask any Hawaiian out there and they will respond “Lucky We Live Hawaii!” I think growing up in Hawaii has given me a sense of roots, somewhere I know I’ll always have ties to. I’ll never forget that. I can’t imagine what it would feel like growing up without a sense of culture. Music is also a huge part of that culture, and I think growing up surrounded by people who love music really made a huge impact on my life. What advice would you give other aspiring young Hawaii musicians? Never quit. Work hard. Nothing worthwhile just falls in your lap. You have to work at it, everyday, always. I’m still learning.

and opened up a bottle of wine and did that video in one take as a test run for his new cameras. I was practicing for some shows in Austin, so it really was this spontaneous video. So it always blows my mind when I think of how big it became.

No one. I’ve really just made music because I love to do it and can’t imagine ever doing anything else in my life. But the business side of it? I have no fucking idea what I’m doing, yo.

The Generation Of Ladies Night Casanova celebrates 25 years in Makawao do a show. Then we started doing the shows on our own. You have to ride the wave and be alert enough to catch it. MT: Why did the pizza oven going in your restaurant make front page of The Maui News?

GC: When we got the restaurant we completely transformed it. The oven was the first wood burning oven on Maui. It was major news in 1989. The Maui News at that time was also the only source of information for Maui. Radio was very little. So The Maui News was there along with the forklift. That wood burning oven has been on 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 25 years. At night, we cover it with a lid. In the morning, they open it up and stoke the fire. Those ovens are built to last generations. That oven, and our pizza, has 25 years of mana.

Giovanni Cappelli of Casanova

T

MT: Casanova is iconic Upcountry. What’s your secret?

he restaurant business on Maui can be ruthless. You open, you’re hot, then three months later you’re not and you’re gone. Some go the distance, but not many. This weekend, the Upcountry Italian dining and dancing establishment known as Casanova celebrates 25 years Upcountry with a float in the Makawao Rodeo Parade.I recently talked story with owner Giovanni Cappelli about how Makawao has changed, how Casanova puts mana in their pizza and what lay behind the Ladies Night baby boom.

MT: How did Casanova make it when so many had failed before?

MAUITIME: How did you get the lease on the restaurant?

MT: I think of Makawao as a sleepy little town. How did nightlife make it big Upcountry?

GIOVANNI CAPPELLI: Our cafe started in 1986 with the deli. It was how we arrived in Maui. Next to us there was this cowboy place that was basically dead. So one day they just left. At that time, the lease was with Bob Longhi. Immediately we called Bob and he asked me what zodiac sign I was. I said, “I’m a Taurus.” He said, “Okay you got it. I like Taurus. Taurus can have the lease.” The whole interview with Longhi was about my Taurus sign–thank God I was a Taurus and I got the lease. Of course I’m Italian and Bob Longhi had a lot of appreciation of Italy. Italy was in his heart even if he was not really Italian. But the zodiac sign was the clincher in the deal. He was right: look, I am still here.

GC: Bob had the lease but he did not own the property. The property was owned by the Molina family. They were the original family that did what it was originally called: Club Rodeo. It was a USO club, a place where the officers, the soldiers and marines could go. It was around World War II. The Molina family also had a famous swing band, the Molina Swing Band, that played there.

GC: Our luck was that we arrived in the transition phase. The end of the paniolo era in Makawao and the beginning of the gentrification of Upcountry. We immediately hit it big on the live entertainment. There was no Maui Arts and Cultural Center and the music scene was totally lacking. We packed the place with shows like Cecilio and Kapono, Taj Mahal, Kool and the Gang, War and CJ Chenier. Blues was big–Maui was all about heavy duty rock. Barry Flanagan [of Hapa] had a rock band called The Penetrators, and the girls flocked to the shows.

MT: How did Casanova come to be the poster boy for the no-smoking movement? GC: In the 2000s, Dr. Nat was doing a packed salsa show every Friday night. That was killed by the no-smoking [rule]. One night, the place was so full of smoke, Nathan came to me and said, “we have to stop this.” So maybe I was a little buzzed, but I made a quick judgement. I got onstage and said, “From now on, this is a no-smoking establishment.” The Friday after that, no-

MT: I bet you have lots of stories to tell about 25 years of Ladies Nights on Maui! GC: Ladies was one of the very first nights we started. Immediately, it was the place where young people meet. Now the competition is the computer. Ladies night is still the biggest event consistently ongoing for 25 years. The music changes, the DJ changes, the girls change. Well the boys change, too–even if the boys just stand there with their damn Heineken in their hands while the girls do amazing erotic things with their bodies. When I was young, I didn’t even dream about that. I like that the girls are in charge of their sexuality nowadays. They’re not afraid to put it out there. The boys, they eventually get picked up. The happy times that happen under this roof! One of my cooks: her parents met at ladies night, and then they had her, and now she cooks for me. There is this constant rotation of people who meet me and tell me, “we met at Ladies Night at Casanova.” Some of them may move on the next morning. But for a lot of them, it turns into a relationship and they get married. Some of them make children that are now 20 years old and come back to Casanova. Some of them work for me. It’s the generation of Ladies Night. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

MT: Didn’t Sam Kinison perform here, too? GC: Sam Kinison performed right there on the stage a week before he died in a car accident. He was an asshole. He had a private helicopter bring him from the Big Island to Maui, and he took a limo from the airport to Makawao. He performed two shows. There are a lot of artists that performed here that are not with us anymore. Richie Havens, he was amazing. All the connections with the blues musicians and shows–it was not in my original plan. It just happened because we met a promoter who wanted to

MT: There is a lot of history in that building. What was it before Casanova?

GC: Longhi got it from the Molina family and the cowboys ran him out of town in about six months. He renovated it and put money in it. In 1981, he got it from the Molina family. From then on, it was three or four businesses that failed. Piero Resta had it for about eight months before us. Frank Silva, the head of the liquor control department, had it as a restaurant for a bit. Many people tried the spot, and finally these Italians arrived. We hit it big not only for the food, but because we hit the music scene.

GC: Bad food kills you in a restaurant. Good food is the beginning of the conversation. What people look for is a place where they recognize everybody. We’re like the Cheers of Makawao, where everybody knows your name. The charm of Casanova is when you go there, you’re likely to see somebody you know. So if you are having an illicit affair, don’t show up here. Go to Kula Lodge.

body showed up. Jacques in Paia started a Friday night salsa with smoking. I just can’t even imagine having people smoking like it was then. So I became the poster boy for the stop smoking movement. I flew to Oahu to testify. I was really mad because I lost a major night because I said no more smoking. I was the very first nightclub in the state to go smoke-free.

The Prince MAPA’s teen production of ‘Pippin’ shows what’s important in life

T

his Saturday marks the beginning of two weekends at the Steppingstone Playhouse as the talented teens of MAPA’s Teen Summer Musical Theatre Camp present their rendition of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Pippin. The play showcases a magical performance troupe that tells the story of Pippin, a young prince searching for meaning and his purpose in life. The cast includes teenagers from ages 14 to 18 who have dedicated more than 200 hours to intense training in acting, dancing and singing. With 30 students from six different Maui high schools and two students from the mainland, this year’s summer production is filled with many diverse talents. Director Sally Sefton said that MAPA always tries to pick a show that has a message for the kids. “It’s not just about beautiful songs and nice dancing, it’s about what they can take away from the show,” Sefton said. “For me, the lesson of Pippin is that it’s not about being elevated to some high status in life, it’s not about riches, it’s not about asserting your strength through war. It’s about love. It’s about the human heart.” Sefton said that she’s seen a lot of these teens grow as actors over the course of time and is excited for them to perform a play with more adult themes. “It’s hard to find a play that’s kind of sophisticated enough for the kids that’s also considered kid-friendly,” Sefton said. “At the same time, these kids, we’ve worked together for the last four or five years so they’ve sort of grown into this play.” The original play incorporates a lot of sexuality but Sefton toned it down for MAPA’s version of the story. “There’s this song in which Pippin is supposed to have

all these women and it’s very sexy in the original but we made it into a ballet,” Sefton said. “The same thing is implied: that he has all of these women that he falls in love with but it’s done in a much more tasteful and elegant way. It’s beautiful.” Choreography Katie Higuchi said she was excited to be able to mix the original choreography with her own ideas, such as in the scene described above. “A lot of the choreography in this version of Pippin is actual Broadway choreography,” Higuchi said. “That’s not all that common when you see a high school show somewhere, so I’m really proud of the way it looks on the kids.” Higuchi had the privilege of studying under Ann Reinking, who learned the choreography directly from Bob Fosse, the director of the original Broadway production. “She’s sort of a second generation student of Bob Fosse and she is teaching this whole style of dance that even the most advance dancers in this group have never done,” Sefton said. Higuchi said she is very impressed by how well the teens of MAPA have adapted to Fosse’s nuanced style. “I’ve been so lucky to have this group of kids who are really getting the style,” she said. “They’re enjoying it and rising to the occasion. We have some of MAPA’s best singers and dancers, probably the island’s best singers and dancers. These kids are really good.” Musical director Marti Kluth said that these young actors have some of the best qualities anyone in show business could have. “They’re dedicated, they’re talented, they’re enthusiastic, they’re great as a team and they work together very well,” Kluth said. “A lot of them are return students to MAPA who have done shows in the past, so they really bring a certain amount of expertise to the camp.”

Cast member Emma Smith is one of those students. “This is my seventh play here at MAPA and I think that this is going to be the coolest because we get to do a whole bunch of magic and really explore our character,” Smith said. “It’s going to be different than all the other characters I’ve played before.” Sefton said that she is particularly proud of another return student, Kaimana Neil, who was cast as Pippin. “He’s grown to be such a great singer, dancer and actor,” Sefton said. “On stage he lets you in, in a way that’s rare and really powerful.” Neil said that it wasn’t hard to develop a connection to his character because everyone goes through the struggle of trying to define themselves. “Everyone is always just looking and trying out different things that they can do,” he said. “People have so many different careers over their lifetime and you just want to find that one perfect thing that suits you. I feel that way and it definitely relates [to Pippin].” Sefton and Kluth agreed that their favorite part of the show is the scene in which Neil sings “Morning Glow.” “It pretty much makes me cry every time I see it because it’s about people having hope,” Sefton said. “[Neil] is so brilliant at singing that song, he’s such an open-hearted performer.” Kluth said that Neil sings this song extremely well and when the rest of the cast chimes in, it makes the scene even more powerful. “They’re just doing a killer job with it,” Kluth said. “The harmony is awesome, the lead player is awesome and it’s a really poignant and tender and important scene.” Sefton said that she feels very blessed to be apart of this group, as a director and

also as an educator. “This camp is about more than just putting on the show, the show is kind of a vehicle for teaching,” Sefton said. “I want the kids to grow as actors but also as people.” As opening night approaches, this cast of teens are ready to use the skills they have learned throughout the course of this camp, both on and off stage. Jacob Aloi, who flew out from Utah to play Pippin’s half-brother Lewis, said that he’s so happy to have the opportunity to perform in this show. “I got the chance to go to New York and see [Pippin] on Broadway and to this day, it is my favorite show ever,” Aloi said. “It’s going to be fantastic. Definitely come see it.” Pippin runs six performances: two this weekend on July 5 and July 6 along with four more shows July 10-13. Pippin is rated PG and is recommended for ages 13 and up. Tickets can be purchased online or at the customer service kiosk at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E news, visit MauiTime’s events blog at: mauivents.com

Robots In Demise Transformers: Age of Extinction is just plain broken Transformers: Age of Extinction

★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 165 Min.

S

ome things just never change. While the latest summer movie installments of X-Men, How to Train Your Dragon and even 22 Jump Street matched and improved upon their predecessors, Michael Bay’s new Transformers: Age of Extinction does anything but. The last time I sat through a summer movie this long, dreadful and seemingly endless, it was Transformers: Dark of the Moon. I’m sort of glad there are audiences who enjoy these movies (like the too-young kids scattered in the theater with me at a matinee).Yet, the gigantic popularity of this series mystifies me, as I know I’m not alone in thinking every one of these movies stink. A new cast and a few years since the prior installment (with its skyscrapershattering imagery right out of 9/11) made me mildly optimistic going in. The spastic Shia Labeouf and the unbearable Megan Fox have been replaced by Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz (so good on TV’s Bates Motel but not here).

A rushed prologue immediately gets thing off on the wrong foot: we get an elaborate opening showing that evil Transformers are responsible for wiping out the dinosaurs. This amusing idea barely connects, as state of the art CGI depicting dinos being stalked by robots goes by so quickly, you never get any sense of awe. Every scene that follows is like that, as no scene, character or idea is given enough time to develop. The present day setting is Texas but might as well have been identified as “’merica,” with imagery right out of a Coors Light and/or military recruitment film filling the screen. A drinking game of taking a shot every time the American flag appears would result in kidney damage after 10 minutes. Anyway, Wahlberg–with his muscles about to burst out of his shirt–is as miscast here as a wacky scientist as he was playing a high school science teacher in The Happening. It’s bad enough the role makes him a weirdly over-protective father (in a manner appropriate to a ‘50s sitcom), but Wahlberg’s Mr. Universe-meets-Rick Moranis Dad unearths a hibernating Optimus Prime. Minutes later, things blow up a lot, the war between Decepticons and Autobots continues, Peltz pouts (and is constantly pho-

tographed from the waist down), nothing makes sense, everyone yells and even more things blow up. Ladies and gentlemen, you are watching a Michael Bay movie. As in every other Transformers movie, the cast overacts crazily, clearly not wanting to be upstaged by the seamless blend of live action footage and CGI. Stanley Tucci’s bureaucrat in a Faustinian bargain with Galvatron is a repeat of the character Patrick Dempsey played in the last movie. Kelsey Grammer comes off best, though this isn’t a showcase for good acting. I was especially embarrassed for John Goodman, whose voice work for Hound isn’t a career highlight. While the supporting characters are often stereotypical, sexist, racist caricatures, let it be noted that none of the human cast is in any way likable. The Transformers themselves are repellent,

appearing as though made from crushed together soda cans and acting with all the charm of birthday party clowns. Aside from watching them transform and smash through buildings, it’s hard to think of these as our “heroes.” Despite a story originating from toy shelves, this PG-13 movie is too profane, scary and violent for children. While this generation of children will grow up to recognize how well the Harry Potter series will hold up down the road, this series (and the Twilight movies) will only bring embarrassed eye rolls and declarations of “so-bad-they’re good” years later. Let me save you some time: aside from The Island, none of Bay’s films improve with age. That this is slightly less terrible than the second Transformers film, Revenge of the Fallen, is the highest praise I can give it.■

Horoscope

Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Make life easier on yourself. You’re just clinging to that irritating behavior out of stubbornness. You know that most of those you adore find that habit annoying, and—if truth be known—you’re not even all that attached to it anymore, yourself. You’ve just been holding on to it out of fear of appearing to capitulate to others’ demands or desires. That would be awful, to give people the impression that they had some influence over you! Sorry, I’m only teasing you because you know that your Crabby clutching is giving you more agitation than it’s worth. Let it go. Don’t do it for us, if that bothers you so much. Just do it for yourself.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You like to think you always do what’s best for yourself, but then you go on an uncontrollable candy binge and make yourself sick—all the while knowing exactly what will happen, but being unable to stop yourself. This week you’re especially susceptible to the delicious but self-destructive whims of your most capricious self. Consequently, you’ll probably end up doing shit that’s a little stupid and bad for you. Oh well. Luckily, you’re also grown up enough to repair the damage quickly, so you can concentrate on fixing yourself instead of kicking yourself.

ANSWERS

...to questions from page 4

1: D–U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono 2: A–Ing; B–Keith-Agaran; C–Carroll; D–English; E–Woodson 3: C–The installation of a new traffic signal

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Don’t wait on the group. Entangling your fate with others’ this week would be a huge mistake. Waiting to find out what they’re up to before you make your own decisions will just be frustrating for all concerned; they’ll feel rushed in making decisions they’d rather wait on, and you’ll end up missing stuff, due to their delays. There’s no time for consensus, or even a vote. If you wait for people to get on the same page as you, you’ll be at the end of the book before you’ve read a chapter. Just plow on ahead, and hope some of the others can keep up—or, at the very least, catch up. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Sadly, you were trained, early on, not to stop and smell the roses. Maybe a bee stung you on the nose, just once, and ever since then you’ve resisted enjoying the blooms on your way home from work. Perhaps you justify it in the name of harried efficiency, or spartan selfdenial. Just quit that, already. Half of life’s pleasures are roses by the side of the road. If you can’t periodically squeeze in ten seconds to enjoy them, you’re really screwing yourself over. Don’t let faulty programming get the best of you. Enjoy the inefficient, irrelevant little details; sometimes they’re all you’ve got. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

I wish I could say you were in for a week of lazy Sundays, which is what you really need, but you’re not. Unfortunately, although you’re dearly deserving of such a respite from the demands you’ve begun to resent (even when you’d usually welcome them), you won’t get it yet. I hope you can find the strength and resilience to make it through another crazed week without having a nervous breakdown. Maybe it’ll help when I tell you that next week you’ll finally have the down-time you’ve been craving. You can lay in bed and stare at the ceiling for days on end, and no one will say a word. Sound good? Relax and try to navigate through these last few obstacles. You’re less than seven days away. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

You’re no idiot savant but to some you might seem like one, especially this week. You’re amazingly good at a few things—and, sadly, fairly bad at a couple of others. When these two talents—extraordinary and abysmal—are placed on display one after the other, it can give someone the jarring impression that you’re kind of a brilliant freak. Evolved Caps tend to just leave it there. Who cares what those simplistic losers think? Try that one on for size, if you haven’t before. Let them evolve enough to enjoy brilliant freaks (whether you actually are one or not), and if they can’t be bothered, who the hell needs them?

Your view of the big picture is bewilderingly small, and that’s particularly obvious this week, when it could result in a series of exponentially complicated miscommunications or misunderstandings. Instead of acting on what seems obvious, ask yourself if there’s any chance that there could be some invisible element in play, some other forces at work behind the scenes you can see. If the answer is yes, give the benefit of the doubt to those you’d normally question; you’ll save yourself the embarrassment and hassle you’d experience once you found out what was really going on. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You’re like a blurry photograph taken from a great distance. No one can quite believe you are what you purport to be. They squint and wonder: Is that little pink blob on the beach really a naked picture of Jennifer Lawrence? Luckily for you, someone just snapped a greatly superior telephoto lens onto the camera, and things are about to swim quickly into focus. Being subject to such intimate scrutiny shouldn’t bother you Leos, but it might discomfit some of your scrutinizers when they have to admit that, yes, itreally is Jennifer Lawrence walking naked down the beach. It comes as no surprise to you when you’re proven to be exactly what you say you are. Just bite your tongue when it surprises others. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

I met this crazy girl who was terrified of birds, convinced that they were contaminated with microbes that would infect her brain. Just days after she’d explained the rationale behind her panicked flight from avian proximity, she saw a baby bird tumble from its nest, and her heart went out to it. Within hours, she’d brought the chick into her home. You, too, might experience something similar this week—something you fear might need you so much that you can’t refuse it. Don’t even try. Help those who ask you for it, and watch how it changes how you think about them. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

In your case, growth usually happens imperceptibly slowly, only visible cumulatively, over time. But every once in a while, you get an overnight growth spurt that even your dopey boyfriend might notice. This week’s astrological influences are like spiritual fertilizer for you Taureans. Because you’re likely to shoot up three metaphorical inches and swell two shoe sizes this week, make sure you’ve got plenty of room to do it in. If you’ve been feeling crowded in general lately, do what you need to do to clear out some space for the new, expanded you. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

You’re broadcasting loud and clear. All your neighbors’ stereos are picking you up. You’re the catchy tune that everyone’s singing, and you’re flying high this week. But what happens next week, when everyone declares your song overplayed and tired? What happens when you make people roll their eyes, cover their ears, and sing over you, just to keep you from getting stuck in their heads? All I’m saying: Enjoy the wave. But remember it has a beginning, middle, and end. If you want to keep riding the ride, you can’t keep coasting; you’ve got to think of something new to sing.

Don’t bother trying to shimmy out from under other people’s judgments about you. They’ve already made up their minds. Whether they’ve decided you’re a hero or villain, you’re stuck with it. There’s no point in wasting energy trying to disprove or argue with them; they’re too damn stubborn for logic, reason, or contrary evidence. Shrug and accept their wrongful appraisal. “Yep, that’s me.” Your casual acceptance of their wrongful impressions will only make you look slicker and sexier when they finally figure out (on their own) how wrong they were about you.
