HAWAII CARPENTERS REALLY HATE ELLE COCHRAN

HAWAII AG SETTLES SLAMMING SUIT WITH CREDIT CARD COMPANIES Two years ago the State of Hawaii sued a slew of credit card companies, alleging that they were “slamming” customers–signing them up for products they didn’t ask for or ultimately didn’t receive. Well, four of those companies– Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Discover Financial Services and Citibank–have settled with the state for a total of “approximately $11.3 million,” according to a news release from the Hawaii Attorney General’s office sent out on Aug. 4. “We filed these cases to protect Hawaii consumers and stop illegal and deceptive practices of marketing credit card protection plans,” said Attorney General David Louie in the news release. “With the resolution of these cases we have taken a strong stance against unfair and deceptive credit card practices. These cases are important because they put the credit card industry on notice that it will be held accountable if it engages in misleading practices.”

According to the news release, these practices include “enrolling consumers without their consent; providing misleading information about free trial periods; distorting plan benefits; billing for services not provided; unfairly charging credit card customers for interest and fees; or denying plan benefits to eligible customers.”

WHY HAWAII ELECTION POLLING IS BAD Well, this is it–the last issue of MauiTime before the Hawaii Primary Election on Aug. 9. So who’s going to win? Depends on which candidate you ask, or which poll you read. And if it seems to you that polls around here–which show both incumbent U.S. Senator Brian Schatz and challenger Rep. Colleen Hanabusa leading in the Democratic Senate race–aren’t very helpful, take heart: others have noticed, too. “One problem: Polling in Hawaii–and especially primary polling–is notoriously unreliable,” Aaron Blake wrote in an Aug. 4 Washington Post politics blog. “And we don’t mean off-by-a-few points unreliable. We mean often vastly different-from-thefinal-result unreliable.” For his blog post, Blake used a few recent examples. In the 2010 Special Election, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s polling perfectly mirrored the final results, while Honolulu Civil Beat’s polls were off. But two years later, Civil Beat pretty much nailed the 2012 Hawaii Second District congressional race while the Star-Advertiser missed badly. Of course, in that same year, the

Star-Advertiser came close to polling the outcome of the U.S. Senate race while Civil Beat didn’t. As for why Hawaii polling is so unreliable, Blake wrote that a big part of the reason is “because the state’s large Asian American population is more difficult to correctly sample and often less willing to answer a pollster’s questions.” He then hyperlinked that explanation to a May 2014 Honolulu Magazine interview with Hawaii pollster Becky Ward (of Ward Research). “There is, sometimes, a reticence to speak among some of the Asian ethnicities in Hawaii,” Ward said in that interview. “So there are some factors that will increase

Maui County Council races are usually sleepy, low-contact affairs with lots of smiles and roadside sign-waving. But this year’s three-way race for the West Maui council seat is different. Elle Cochran, a slow-growth devotee and Save Honolua activist who ran for reelection unopposed in 2012, is now facing two challengers: Rick Nava and Ka‘ala Buenconsejo. Of those two, Buenconsejo is the better funded, with a little more than $9,000 in his campaign coffers. But he’s also benefitting from a massive infusion of cash from a Honolulu-based super PAC called Forward Progress. Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission records filed on July 30 show that Forward Progress is entirely funded by the Hawaii Carpenters Market Recovery Program, a separate political committee funded by the carpenters. This makes sense because Forward Progress is run by John White, who is also the executive director of Pacific Resource Partnerships (PRP), the controversial nonprofit organization that spent nearly a million in 2012 promoting Honolulu’s rail project. PRP also ran a series of nasty negative ads against anti-rail Honolulu mayoral candidate Ben Cayetano–ads that PRP apologized for after the election. White did not return a phone call asking for comment by press time. But according to Forward Progress’ July 30 expenditure filings, the organization has so far spent nearly $15,000 on radio advertisement buys and $17,000 on a Maui County poll conducted by San Francisco-based Tulchin Research (see third item below). The organization’s July 30 unpaid expenditures filing shows they’ve also spent and a little more than $36,000 on mailers and postage–all in support of Buenconsejo–more than $68,000 total in spending. “The carpenters union has never endorsed me,” Cochran told me today when

informed of the above figures. She recalled her interview with them when she first ran for office. “Their big question was how do I feel about the conversion of hotels to timeshares,” she said. “I told them that I know it gives them a lot of jobs, but I lost my job because of timeshares. They downsized a lot of people when they converted to a timeshare. Ever since, I haven’t been asked back.” Cochran further speculated that her lack of support for the proposed Olowalu Town, which build 1,500 units at Olowalu may also make her a target of the construction industry. Cochran’s latest financial disclosure statement shows her campaign is currently running a $55,000 deficit. (We first posted a version of this item on Aug. 1 on our Mauifeed.com news blog.)

Colleen Hanabusa

their comfort level and encourage better participation in telephone surveys–things like an 808 area code on caller ID and an interviewer from Hawaii with a voice that puts them at ease.” Locally, reliable polling is all but impossible to find. Polls are expensive, and most Maui candidates don’t commission them. They can function as internal research tools to find out what voters want, or distribute negative or even salacious information–the latter are known as “push polls.” So far, I’ve found just a couple in campaign finance statements: state Sen. Roz Baker, D–6th District paid for a telephone poll from QMark Research in Honolulu on July 3 (at a cost of more than $14,500) and the Super PAC Forward Progress poll cited in the first item above for Buenconsejo. Baker and John White, the executive director of Forward Progress, did not respond to inquiries by press time. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

THE SILVERSWORDS ARE BLOOMING As we hit the peak of summer, an abundance of rare silversword plants are blooming at Haleakala National Park. “Long term residents and park staff say this is one of the best years they’ve seen for flowers up here,” said Superintendent Natalie Gates in a July 29 press release. “We hope neighbors and visitors alike will come enjoy this incredible sight.” Gates stressed the importance of keeping these plants safe because they are not found anywhere else in the world. “The easiest thing we can all do to help these threatened plants is to stay on the trails so we don’t crush existing roots or new seedlings,” Gates said. Visitors can see the silverswords at the summit, at the Kalahaku Overlook or on one of the 4-6 mile hikes on the Sliding Sands Trail, which leads into the summit basin. NEW REPORT ON HALEAKALA PARK DURING WWII If you want to see a photos of things like U.S. Marines and an amphibious tank at Big Beach in Makena in early 1945, then you should check out the new 501-page report from the National Park Service– Hawaii, the Military, and the National Park: World War II and Its Impacts on Culture and the Environment, written by William Chapman. Is your organization passionate about spreading the Aloha spirit? Does this same organization have an innovative idea about how Maui County can showcase our beloved Hawaiian traditions to locals and tourists alike? If so, you should consider applying for a Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) grant which could help turn that simple idea into Maui’s next extraordinary event. For those unsure of where to start, the HTA joined with the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development (OED) and the Hawaii Community Foundation and presented a free workshop about the three Product Enrichment Programs (PEP) that they have available to the public. These three programs include the County Product Enrichment Program (CPEP), Living Hawaiian Culture Program (LHCP) and Natural Resources Community-Based Pro-

gram (NRCBP). The workshop was held on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at UH Maui College. (Attendance at the workshop was not required to apply for HTA grants.) Interested applicants will have until Sept. 19 to submit proposals for tourism programs in Maui County. Grant winners will be able to see their ideas come to life in 2015 under CPEP. HTA anticipates that these grants will expand and enrich Hawaii tourism products by introducing new experiences while concurrently improving communitybased attractions that have already been established. Grant proposals should encompass programs that fall under one of the following categories: agriculture, culture, education, health and wellness, nature, sports or technology. Some well-known CPEP programs that have been presented to the public this year include some of Maui’s favorite annual events such as the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival, the Maui Marathon, Lahaina Plantation Days and more. CPEP also sponsors ongoing activities such as Wailuku First Friday and Theater on the Isle. CPEP Request for Proposals forms and application packets are available online at Mauicounty.gov/CPEP or at the OED office in Wailuku at One Main Plaza, Suite 305. For more information on CPEP programs, contact HTA Programs Specialist Cheryl Sterling at 808-270-7997.

what the military did at Haleakala National Park during the war (the armed forces used the park from 1941 to 1948), the report does a good job of showing what Hawaii was like during the war for the massive numbers of soldiers, sailors and marines who moved through here, and the civilians who lived alongside. It’s full of unique and fascinating anecdotes like this, which is part of the report’s description of Camp Maui, site of today’s 4th Marine Division Park in Haiku: “The Marines were assigned a site in Ha‘iku, on the windward side of the island, close to where combat engineer Ralph Pratt served with the 98th Infantry Division,” states the report. “Designated Camp Maui, the exhausted units slowly took possession of what had once been an Army facility. As the division’s historian later commented, ‘they [were] faced with a base that was not very highly developed or equipped.’ At the time, the camp had no electric power and, as one officer remembered, ‘was ankle deep in mud from recent rains.’” This is solid historical material about Maui during World War II that’s hard to find elsewhere. Taiwanese developer Mu-Chi Sung announced in July plans for marketing the software as part of a cat health device so that owners, especially those with multiple cats, can better monitor their cats’ eating habits. Sung first had to overcome the problem of how to get the cat to stick its head through a slot in the feeder so the software can start to work. The device, with mobile apps for remote monitoring by the owner, may sell for about $250.

The Environmental Protection Agency is already a News of the Weird favorite (for example, the secret goofing-off “man cave” of one EPA contractor in July 2013 and, two months later, the fabulist EPA executive who skipped agency work for months by claiming falsely to be on secret CIA missions), but the agency’s Denver Regional Office took it to another level in June. In a leaked memo, the Denver deputy director implored employees to end the practice of leaving feces in the office’s hallway. The memo referred to “several” incidents.

SAVING FOOD STAMPS The federal food stamp program, apparently uncontrollably rife with waste, has resorted to giving financial awards to the states that misspend food stamp money the least. In July, the Florida Department of Children and Families, beaming with pride, announced it had won a federal grant of $7 million for having blown only $47 million in food stamp benefits in 2013 (less than 1 percent of its $6 billion in payments). Vermont, the worstperforming state, misspends almost 10 percent of its food stamp benefits.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration came down hard in July on West Virginia’s Freedom Industries for violations of chemical safety standards in January 2014 that resulted in the 10day contamination of drinking water for 300,000 residents. OSHA issued two fines to the company–one for $7,000 and the other for $4,000.

GREAT ART Milo Moire, a Swiss performance artist, startled (and puzzled) fairgoers at Germany’s Art Cologne in April by creating a painting while standing on two ladders, nude and expelling “eggs,” filled with paint and ink, from her vagina. Each “PlopEgg” canvas made what she called a powerful feminist statement about women, fertility and creativity. In June, she attempted to tour Switzerland’s Art Basel fair “wearing” only the names of clothing items written

on her nude body, e.g., on her leg, the word “pants.” Officials told her to go get dressed if she wanted to see the show.

GOOD INVESTMENT Critics praised bad-girl British artist Tracey Emin’s 1998 furniture-and-effects exhibit, “My Bed,” supposedly representing a failed romantic relationship, featuring mussed sheets and, littering the room, empty vodka bottles and used condoms. Prominent collector Charles Saatchi turned heads when he bought the piece for the equivalent of about $200,000, and in June, almost 15 years later, he sold “My Bed” at auction for the equivalent of $4,330,000.

A GREAT FALL In July, the large cement “Humpty Dumpty” at the Enchanted Forest in Salem, Oregon, created by Roger Tofte in 1970, was destroyed when two intruders tried to climb the wall Humpty was sitting on. However, the wall crumbled and Humpty suffered a great fall, and Tofte said he doubted he could put Humpty back together again, but would try instead to make a new one.

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! Sheriff’s deputies in Salina, Kansas, arrested Aaron Jansen, 29, but not before he put on quite a show on July 5. Jansen, speeding in a car spray-painted with derogatory comments about law enforcement, refused to pull over and even survived a series of tire-shredding road spikes as he turned into a soybean field, where he revved the engine and drove in circles for 40 minutes. As deputies set up a perimeter, Jansen futilely tossed items from the car (blankets, CDs, anything available) and then (with the car still moving) climbed out the driver’s door and briefly “surfed” on the roof. Finally, as deputies closed in, Jansen shouted a barrage of Bible verses before emerging from the car wearing a cowboy hat, boots and a woman’s dress.

BAD, BAD SAMARITANS Roy Ortiz hired a lawyer in March and said he was considering suing the first responders who rescued him during the historic September 2013 flooding around Broomfield, Colorado–because they failed to find him fast enough when his car plunged into raging waters. And in March, Houston sheriff’s deputy Brady Pullen filed a lawsuit against the grieving family of the delusional man he was forced to shoot and kill during a 2012 emergency call–because Pullen had been injured in the skirmish and believes the family failed to warn him just how dangerous Kemal Yazar was. Also, in Alcona, Ontario, in April, Sharlene Simon, 42, filed a lawsuit against the family of the teenage bicyclist she accidentally ran down, fatally, in 2012–claiming that the boy’s dangerous joyriding at 1:30am initiated the events that left her traumatized. ■

o my neighbor who leaves his sad and bored looking dog tied up on a short chain in his front yard all the time. Why did you get a dog in the first place? A dog is not a lawn ornament or a home security system. They are loving social animals that deserve to be part of your home and your life. Dogs that are chained run a much higher risk of biting and are more likely to be the dogs that run off and don’t come back when called. Chaining dogs outside for long periods of time also leaves them more exposed to fleas, insect bites and bad weather. Tying up a child would be considered abuse. Why then do we have a double standard when it comes to our affectionate four-legged companions? Have a heart for man’s best friend!

Primary Election Endorsements By Anthony Pignataro

or us political junkies, the late summer of an even-numbered year is a magical time. Our airwaves, email and inboxes get jammed with misleading, often shameless propaganda. Battalions of volunteers line roadsides to wave colorful but still bland signs at passing motorists. And, for the true believers, forums pop up at community centers around the island, where earnest residents can sit on metal folding chairs while someone at the front of the room speaks platitudes about “sustainability” and “commitment.” Yes, it’s an election year, and that means you’re holding the first of two special issues we’ll run

F

this year dedicated to the big vote. The first issue, this one, contains our endorsements for the upcoming Aug. 9 Hawaii Primary Election. Now if you’re looking for consistency or some kind of political coherence, forget it. We’re handing out endorsements based on our own sense of what it takes for effective, honest public service. Hey, the Primary Election is the fun one. Because there are so many candidates, we get to vote our hopes and aspirations for a different Maui. There will be plenty of time to vote for the lesser of two evils and all that in November–but this week, it’s all about our dreams. Now we’re not going to go through each ticket

US Senator Brian Schatz In February, the eminently respected National Journal ranked U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii, the most liberal in the U.S. Senate. This is fine with us. Appointed by Governor Neil Abercrombie in the final days of 2012 following the death of Senator Daniel Inouye, Schatz has since then sponsored or co-sponsored more than 400 bills, including a few that mandate employers provide birth control coverage in their health plans, asks the Centers for Disease Control to research firearms safety and raises federal minimum wage to $10.10/an hour. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, one of Schatz’s two Democratic challengers (the other is crooner Brian Evans), is an outstanding legislator with a fine record of public service, but her argument that Inouye chose her as his successor is irrelevant–at least in theory, the state constitution mandated that Abercrombie choose Inouye’s successor, and now the voters get their chance to approve or disprove that choice.

US Representative (2nd District) Tulsi Gabbard Gabbard is a woman, war veteran, surfer and a Hindu–groups that are very under-represented in the U.S. House of Representatives. But that’s not why we’re endorsing her for reelection. She’s smart, capable and has put forward a ton of good bills. She’s very progressive on social and environmental issues, but also pro-military (not surprising, given that she’s also a captain in the Hawaii National Guard). She’s also been a leading voice for reform of the U.S. Veterans Affairs department, which has been a shambles for years in terms of getting vets adequate and timely health care.

Governor Neil Abercrombie Somehow, it’s become the alternative thing to do to back Neil Abercrombie for a second term as Governor of Hawaii. His calling the Legislature into Special Session last year to vote up or down on same sex marriage was refreshing. Sure, he doesn’t understand the state’s financial disclosure laws and botched the whole Hawaii Health Connector health insurance thing, but on balance we’re happy with him. State Senator David Ige doesn’t seem to disagree with Abercrombie on big social and environmental issues (they sadly also agree that legalizing marijuana is a bad idea), and his biggest advantage in the race is that he’s not Abercrombie, who’s suffering from miserable poll numbers. But Ige does have former Governors George Ariyoshi and Ben Cayetano backing him, along with the Hawaii State Teachers Association. Is that enough to dump Abercrombie? We don’t think so.

and endorse someone from each party for each race. We did that a couple years ago, and to be honest, it’s silly. For instance, a few weeks ago the Honolulu Star-Advertiser endorsed both Democrat Neil Abercrombie and Republican James “Duke” Aiona for governor. Each man is advocating wildly different things, but the StarAdvertiser thinks they’re both great. We believe this is confusing to readers, and will henceforth just pick one person for each office from all the available candidates. Of course, it’s up to readers to sort out which party’s ballot they want to vote on (remember: each voter can only vote one party line, so make it a good one).

Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui The Lieutenant Governor acts as an “assistant chief executive,” serves as governor when the real governor leaves the state and handles such pressing matters as overseeing the “granting of legal name changes” and “Processing documents that convey state lands inter-departmentally.” In layman’s terms, all of that translates into “pretty much do nothing.” And since he took over the job in late 2012, Maui boy/former Senate Majority Leader Shan Tsutsui has been outstanding in the role of Lt. Gov. He’s also preferable to all eight of his challengers–especially state Senator Clayton Hee, D–Kaneohe, who is very liberal on social issues but downright reactionary concerning journalists. Hee also filed false personal disclosure statements (first reported by blogger Ian Lind) from 2008 to 2011, and that makes Hee such an appalling choice for high office.

State Senator (5th District) Gil Keith-Agaran Gil Keith-Agaran has one of the Hawaii Legislature’s most impressive resumes. A partner with the Wailuku law firm Takitani, Agaran and Jorgensen, he’s also a former state Department of Labor & Industrial Relations Director, Board of Land & Natural Resources Chairman, Maui County Public Works Director and state House member. Today he’s a state Senator, a job Governor Abercrombie appointed him to in late 2012. His politics are mainstream liberal (pro union, minimum wage, social issues, environment) but he’s also one of the few local officials in the entire state who understands social media and is active and engaging on Twitter (his handle his @Gil4sd5).

State Senator (6th District) Terez Amato Roz Baker is an extremely capable and effective legislator–the money she’s helped secure for a new Kihei high school is proof of that. But she’s also a bit too friendly to corporate interests, and in the interest of shaking things up, we’re backing her opponent in the Primary. Amato has made corporate contributions and support her key issue in the race, and it’s refreshing. In fairness, we’ve known Terez Amato for some years, and even edited her writing back in 2007 when she wrote a MauiTime cover story on why the county should just leave unpermitted transient vacation rentals alone. And if she can go through that and still consider us friends, then she can clearly survive in the state Legislature.

State Representative (9th District) NO ENDORSEMENT Yeah, here you have incumbent Democrat Justin Woodson (appointed by Governor Neil Abercrombie in early 2013) defending his seat in his first election ever against former Maui Maui County Mayor James “Kimo” Apana, who is also a Democrat. Woodson’s biggest vote so far in the House has been against Abercrombie’s same sex marriage legalization bill, while Apana previously distinguished himself in office (1999 to 2003) as BFF to Maui’s land developers. You guys are on your own with this one. Oh, and since these two guys are the only ones in the race, whoever wins the Primary wins the seat.

State Representative (11th District) Kaniela Ing Rep. Kaniela Ing is still pretty new to the state Legislative. His big push during the most recent session was a bill that would ban smoking on all public beaches in Hawaii. While we’d certainly like to see that, the bill is basically unenforceable (the House Water and Land Committee deferred it in February). That being said, Ing’s social and environmental priorities are great, and his youth (he’s not quite 26) is a welcome addition to the state House of Representatives.

State Representative (13th District) Barbara J. Haliniak Like the 9th District House race, there are just two Democrats in the race, so whoever wins on Aug. 9 takes it all. But unlike the 9th District, the 13th is a tough one to run in, requiring candidates to travel between East Maui, Lanai and Molokai. That being said, we’ve had a lot of problems with Democrat Mele Carroll in the past (her notorious inability to get campaign finance statements filed with the state seems to be under control at present) but her 15-minute denunciation of last year’s bill legalizing same-sex marriage was embarrassing, both for its self-righteousness and its misreading of Hawaii history. It’s time for someone new in the seat, which is why we’re backing Barbara Haliniak, a longtime small business owner and community leader on Molokai.

Maui County Mayor Tamara Paltin It’s not that incumbent Alan Arakawa has been a bad mayor (though the management of the county’s Parks Department has been a disaster and the U.S. District Court in Honolulu recently ruled that the county’s been violating the Clean Water Act for years by injecting treated wastewater into the ground in West Maui). It’s just that when people say they want more “normal folks” to run for office, Paltin is exactly who they’re talking about. Her combination of work experience and environmental focus puts her above Arakawa’s other challengers (that would be Beau Hawkes, Alana Kay, Orion Kopelman and Nelson Waikiki). She’s been a Maui County Lifeguard since 2001. She’s an HGEA steward. She’s a longtime Save Honolua activist who’s served as the organization’s president/executive director since 2009. She even spent a couple years working as a server at the old Outback Steakhouse in Kahana. She’s done all that while also being married and raising a couple kids. So while Paltin hasn’t held elected office before, we’re guessing that being Maui County Mayor would actually make her life a bit easier.

County Council (East Maui) John Blumer-Buell What you have here are three old guys, all of whom are nice and conscientious and experienced, running for the same office. Bob Carroll’s had the job forever, and both John Blumer-Buell and Nikhilananda have run for some sort of office forever. In the interest of fairness, we think one of the other old guys should have a go at it. We’re giving the nod to Blumer-Buell this time because, well, he’s got a wealth of Maui history locked up in his cranial attic, and we’d love for him to open it up now and then during committee meetings so that everyone can see how none of us are really learning anything about how to make things work on Maui.

County Council (West Maui) Elle Cochran First elected in 2010, Elle Cochran is one of the founders of the Save Honolua Coalition. She believes in smart growth, GMO labeling, renewable energy, solid waste recycling and environmental preservation. At a time when it seems that the vast majority of the County Council believes that commercial and residential land development is county’s highest priority, it’s nice that Cochran’s there to provide an alternative.

County Council (South Maui) Don Couch We haven’t agreed with everything Don Couch has done in office since getting elected in 2010. For instance, we think the Maui Island Plan was a stronger, more detailed and overall better document before it went through the Maui County Council Planning Committee (which Couch chairs) early this year. But on balance, we’ve happy Couch is on the County Council. He’s a straight shooter who will listen to every side of an issue. While mostly pro-development, his vote two years ago against Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s request to take 150 acres of Lipoa Point out of preservation still resonates with us as a strong, brave act.

County Council (Makawao-Haiku-Paia) Alex Haller In a hotly contested four-way race that pits incumbent/Maui Visitors Bureau pal Mike White against former Councilman Mike Molina, leave it to us to endorse the most unknown candidate (Henry Kahula Jr., the fourth candidate, has previously and unsuccessfully run for state office). Haller’s young, from Maui, works as a landscaper and got a degree in business finance from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He says he entered the race after he discovered–during the Maui County Council’s recent discussions over Mayor Alan Arakawa’s proposed land buy in Launiupoko–that County Council members really didn’t seem to understand the differences between various land appraisal formulas. That’s good enough for us.

OHA Trustee–No Island Residency Required Mililani Trask / John D. Waihee / Hina Wong-Kalu There are 16 people in this race, and you can vote for up to three candidates. Given that these are historic times for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs–the question of establishing a government-to-government relationship between the kanaka people and the U.S. government is incredibly controversial and timely right now–we think it’s more important than ever to pay special attention to this race. Though we’re offering our three choices, we urge you to research all of the candidates before making your selection. That being said, we like Trask–an attorney and former OHA Trustee–for being so outspoken, incumbent Waihee for his experience and Wong-Kalu–a transgender kumu hula who’s the subject of the documentary film Kumu Hina–for her courage. ■

rinking bubble tea is the best way to quench your thirst in Asia during hot summer days. It’s a cold, frothy tea-based beverage that started as a Taiwanese street food in the 1980s, then caught on over the next decade in Japan, China and Southeast Asia. Now, it’s the latest craze in cafe’s in the UK and Europe. This year, Maui jumped on the bubble tea bandwagon with our very own bubble tea shop in the Wharf Cinema Center. Called Shaka Vibe, it started with family wedding, when owners Ramil and Rowel Basco flew in from Canada and thought Maui was seriously missing out on the bubble tea madness. “Besides loving the drinks and food we serve, we’ve also enjoyed drinking them over the last several years where we lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada,” says Rowel. “It actually took a big family trip to Maui to spark the idea of opening a bubble tea shop. While we were here last October for our cousin’s wedding, I noticed there were no stores just selling bubble tea like we have back home. We just kept saying how this would be such a big success in a place like Hawaii. So within three months of vacationing in Maui, Ramil and I were back on the island in January to start our bubble tea company. And within three months of our arrival, we opened our first store here at The Wharf Cinema Center on April 6.” Bubble tea starts with green and black tea leaves that the Bascos brew fresh daily. The possibilities are endless with what kind of drink you can create–like a Subway of tea drinks. Flavors include taro, lilikoi, mango, strawberry, peach and almond. Then you choose the pearls in the drink. They have tapioca pearls (known as boba), but they also have “popping pearls”–little, sweet,

juicy balls that come in a variety of flavors. They also have jellies that add even more flavor and texture. Once you’ve chosen all the combinations you want, they stick it all in a special machine that seals your drink with a shrink wrapped lid and shakes it into a bubbly slushy–the bubble tea. The favorite flavor that’s rising above the rest is the honeydew slushy blended with ice. I tried it with brown tapioca pearls. The experience is pretty unique–you have sweet, creamy fruit flavored icy tea and chewy tapioca. But the store offers something else entirely. “Our snack treat, the Tornado Tater, is fast becoming our signature product,” says Rowel. “This is a whole potato that we swirl onto a skewer then deep fry into a delicious mouth watering snack. Top it off with your choice of eight different seasonings on top.” No frozen potato here. I tried the BBQ flavor, but next time it will be the cheddar. Rowel recommends the taro milk slushy with the salt and vinegar tornado tater, while Ramil says his favorite is the mango milk slushy and the BBQ flavor tater. “We want people to find their favorite drink and snack,” says Ramil. “Whether it’s their first time ordering it or their hundredth. We guarantee they’ll love it or make them one that they do!” For a kama‘aina discount, the shop says that every receipt they give back also acts as a $1 off discount coupon. “We also show our appreciation to repeat customers by offering rewards cards where they can earn free drinks and Tornado Taters,” says Ramil. “It has been the locals on Maui who have really embraced our products and made our business a success. They’ve used social media like Instagram and Facebook to spread the word of our existence all over the island and we are truly grateful!” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

‘The Amazing Cookbook’ Local cuisine shines in a recipe collection from Ben Franklin

I

comb rummage sales, thrift stores and the Maui Friends of the Library shops for old community compilation cookbooks. They’re a window into the culture of island family cooking, a who’s who of church bazaar and potluck recipes. You know that coveted barbecue chicken marinade recipe you’re always asking Auntie to share? Or your friend’s delicious secret recipe crab dip? She may not give it to you at the family potluck, but you’ll likely find it in these books. That’s why I was thrilled to find that Ben Franklin Crafts/Ace Hardware/ Housemart compiles a local seasonal cookbook for about $10. I didn’t have to scrounge around the Kihei Salvation Army–I just had to shell out a bit more cash than the usual fifty cents for a used book. Their most recent edition, simply called The Amazing Cookbook, gathers recipes around a theme of eating healthy. Each section starts with tips on living healthy or an anecdote about a healthy lifestyle change. When I bought one at Ben Franklin in the Ka‘ahumanu Center, the clerk did a little happy dance for me and said I made his day. Apparently, he’d been hawking them to everyone that day, but I was the first to bite. A word of warning: not all the recipes in the book are healthy, but the ones that are will have a cute “Healthy Seal of Approval” stamp. The book also features little tastes of food trivia next to a few of the recipes. Stuff like “Eggplants ardent really vegetables, they’re berries,” with a link to the website where that info originated. It adds to the charm of the book. The recipes vary widely. Teri Morita from the Lihue Ace Hardware starts off the Soups and Salads chapter with a story

of how she improved her health by running marathons. Her recipe for “Teri’s Go-To Salad” is a healthy green papaya salad like I’ve never seen, with its own homemade dressing and suggestion that you stuff the salad in spring roll wrappers. From our own Pukalani Ace Hardware, Manasseh Robidoux offers a recipe for Cashew Chicken Salad that’s phenomenal. It’s got crisp veggies and a peanut butter and coconut milk-concocted dressing. Robidoux includes tips on shopping for curry paste and seasoning the salad. Recipes submitted from the employees are written in their voice, and often include tips on how they like to eat the dish, what to do with leftovers or what grandma they got this recipe from. They’re gems, and the resulting local culinary history is fascinating. The sweets section has recipes for magic coconut pie–one that magically makes its own crust when you bake it. Lana Baisley from Lihue shares a Healthy Chocolate Cake that’s become a family tradition. It’s made with black beans and stevia for sweetener. The Baisley family swears that no hint of the beans will remain in the chocolate flavor. From Lahaina’s Hussey family, we get an Oreo cake recipe that’s a favorite at holidays. I don’t usually like recipes that use instant pudding but this one is irresistible and involves layers of cream cheese and pudding separated by crushed Oreos. This recipe “has become a new family tradition and will be passed down to the next generation,” writes Martin Hussey. “It was originally made to be a frosting, but tasted so good the kids started eating it out of the container.” Definitely defying the book’s largely healthy theme is a Spam sandwich recipe from Honolulu’s Dean Ramos. It has a glorious aioli sauce on it and uses taro rolls, but you can use turkey Spam to make it slightly healthier. Authentic sauces and marinades are something I paid close attention to in the entrees chapter; recipes like ginger steamed mu, bourbon marinated steak and hot garlic eggplant can all be modified with other proteins and veggies. For example, Pukalani’s Tammy Gomes says to use her lemon butter and caper sauce on a pecan and panko-crusted Mahi dish, but I also found it went great on linguine. Go to Hmstores.com for more info on The Amazing Cookbook. So far, the book has raised more than $35,000 for the United Way. ■

The Legendary Unknown Talking story with Randall Rospond album–very intimate–and grew into a full blown Haiku Hillbilly and friends production that took over three years to complete. It released in September 2012. The Randall Rospond Trio–Recorded Live at Manao Radio Studios July 18, 2012 was a live broadcast that was recorded and just sounded like an honest representation of my Trio’s live improvisation. I was moved to release it especially given that the previous CD was taking so long in production. MT: Who or what inspires you to play and create music? RR: I’m really inspired by a lot of the people who I listened to when I was young, like Beat Poets–they’re actual poets from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s, not a band. All the great songwriters like Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, the Grateful Dread and Jim Morrison. I also get inspired by a lot of local musicians, bluegrass and folk music. The music festivals on Maui are also really inspiring, like the Slack Key festivals. PHOTO BY JACK GRACE

R

andall Rospond is one of Maui’s busiest musicians. In fact, we can barely keep up with him between all of his various sets, Mana’o Hana Hou Radio show and playing with his band Haiku Hillbillys. He’s a serious musician, but wasn’t someone who knew on Day One that he wanted to be on stage. I caught up with him at Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea before one of his recent gigs. MAUITIME: Why did you become a musician? RANDALL ROSPOND: I just kind of naturally wandered into the entertainment business. In high school, I worked with a lot of music and sound. It was a natural progression from there. I did a lot of stage and sound managing, and worked with various bands and artists. I had an inspiration with spirit. I was first a lead singer in a rock a band. MT: As a child growing up, did you know that you would become a musician? RR: No, had no idea. I didn’t train for it or anything. Nature had it in mind and it just happened. It was a big surprise to me. MT: Is your family musical? RR: My father played harmonica and I play harmonica to this day. I still own his harmonicas that he had when he was alive. My mother was an enormous music fan so she molded my ear from country, to Elvis, to the Beatles. My aunt was big in the record business so she sent early releases of Beatles albums and as a group of young folk it was very inspiring to listen to. MT: How did you get your start?

RR: It was a while ago. I formed a band right out of university with some buddies from high school. The drummer went to university with me. We got together in Canada in 1982 and just started rehearsing and playing. MT: Do you work with other bands or are you on your own? RR: I work with anybody who’s interested. People hire me to record if they want guitar parts. I just did some work with a female artist. I also have a trio that I do work with and another band called the Haiku Hillbillys, which I formed 17 years ago.

MT: Who are your favorite slack key artists? Do you play any Hawaiian or slack key? RR: I have played slack key and open tuning music in the past but have recently focused on standard tuning songs. I actually have been looking forward to remembering and bringing out my original open tuning songs in my regular weekly performances. I’m a huge Gabby Pahinui fan, as well as Barry Flanagan/Hapa, George Kahumoku, John Cruz and pretty much ALL Hawaiian music. I tend to be more of a fan than attempt to perform as a pure “Hawaiian artist,” per se. I feel the sound, beauty, tone and vibe of Hawaiian music

totally influences my original music. MT: Aren’t you busy enough playing music all over the island? Why do a radio show? RR: I’ve been an enormous music fan since childhood during which time I met and hung out with my hero: the legendary Wolfman Jack. It’s a natural extension of my passion for an extremely varied taste in music and it ties in nicely with my lifestyle as a working musician/singer/songwriter. My radio show is on 91.7FM, Manaoradio.com. It airs from 10am to 2pm every Saturday except the second of each month. I play a vast range of music from Bob Dylan to Frank Zappa to Jazz Lounge to bluegrass to Billie Holliday to the Grateful Dead to the Clash to movie theme songs and dialogue excerpts. I have been in radio for approximately 20 years, beginning in Toronto, Canada with a show that featured local performers that I recorded live. MT: Where do you play on the island? RR: I play every Tuesdays at beach bums in Ma‘alaea 5-8 pm, every Friday at the South Shore Tiki Lounge 4-6pm, every Saturday at Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea 7-9pm, every first Thursday at Fleetwoods in Lahaina 6:30-9:30pm and every second Thursday at Flatbread in Paia 5:30-8:30pm. I add gigs all the time for the band or for myself. I will be playing with the Haiku Hillbillys at Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon at 9:30pm on Aug. 29. For more information, go to Randallrospond.com. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E news, visit MauiTime’s events blog at: mauivents.com

MT: How do you describe the music you play? RR: I started out as a rocker because my first band was called Dead Flowers. We were a raunchy rock ‘n roll band. But the songs I wrote were more sensitive and singer/ songwriter-style. I ended up playing the folk circuit in Canada for years, touring around playing just about everywhere. MT: What are some of your favorite songs to perform? RR: I love playing original music. I’ve been writing for over 30 years. It was very inspiring for me to play something close to my heart. In the industry it’s hard to make a living unless you’re famous already for your music. I’ve been blessed on Maui with great venues that have let me play original music. People can get upset when you don’t play to popular songs and want you to play specific things to please the audience. MT: How did you find the time to release two CDs? RR: Randall Rospond: The Legendary Unknown started as a solo troubadour

Geeks Of The World Rejoice The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ will save us ★★★★★ Rated PG13 / 121 Min.

I

f any movie appears to have been made to directly appeal to attendees of Comic Con and hit every geek demographic (of which I am a part of), it’s this one. This isn’t a slam against Guardians of the Galaxy, nor the suggestion that audiences who (like many characters in this movie) haven’t heard of Star Lord won’t enjoy this as much as graphic novel enthusiasts. For those like myself who are unfamiliar with the comic book its based on, Chris Pratt stars as Peter Quill, an outer space pilot. He finds himself the leader of a seemingly unworkable group of “losers” who form an unlikely and yet unbeatable team. In addition to Quill, who prefers the selfimposed nickname “Star Lord,” there’s the green-skinned and deadly Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the mighty strong but literal minded Drax (Dave Bautista), a tree-like creature named Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) and a talking raccoon with an itchy trigger finger

named Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper). These “guardians” take on an intergalactic threat named Ronan (played by Lee Pace) and struggle to keep their pride and selfabsorbed tendencies in check. It gives its audience a lot of what it wants and much of it is familiar: the fight choreography draws on familiar poses, busy outer space dogfights and a family dynamic to the characters we’ve seen before in The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars and Star Trek. The overly busy story isn’t as engaging as the core willthey-or-won’t-they-get-along predicament of the five main characters and Ronan is yet another uninteresting villain who sports a scepter, an English accent and a lot of anger. What makes this very long movie a fun diversion for audiences is writer/director James Gunn’s emphasis on heart and humor. While it doesn’t have the intended impact overall, Gunn ambitiously bookends the story with a cancer subplot that provides Star Lord with heavy emotional baggage. As much as the vivid, non-stop and gorgeous CGI effects enhance the film, the quirky, oddly adorable characters

All hail the talking raccoon!

are what stayed with me. Pratt winningly plays a Han Solo/Seth Rogen mash-up, though Saldana has done this sort of thing too many times now. Far better is WWE wrestler Bautista, who amusingly plays “dumb” and makes it seem noble. Groot and especially Rocket are convincing, funny and dynamic effects achievements that wouldn’t soar without the great vocal work of the actors. Diesel finds clever inflections on three lines of dialogue, while Cooper is hilarious, though his New York accent comes and goes. For all the big scenes and wall-to-wall spectacle, it’s the little moments that make this work. My favorite scene is when Rocket, who’s in a period of grieving, is comforted by an unlikely companion. I give credit to Gunn, who clearly understands a jewel of a character moment like that is as important as all the explosions. The frequent juxtaposition

of grand sci-fi imagery and 1970s pop tunes is another solid touch, adding a delightfully anachronistic soundtrack to what could otherwise have been orchestral pomp. To end this on a truly comic book-geeky note, I’ll state that I was taken aback by the inevitable final scene after the end credits. The surprise came not from the content of the scene, but how it re-introduces a famous comic book character who’s been absent from movies since 1986. The character in question has always been my favorite comic book figure. I don’t know whether his appearance is a joke or a genuine suggestion by Marvel Studios that he’s returning in his own vehicle. The rendering of the character (whose name I won’t give away) included an ill-considered accent and a somewhat clunky appearance but the intriguing possibility that he might work in a 21st century movie. Geeks rejoice! ■

Horoscope

Sign Language LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

This week is going to suck. Not because anything bad will happen, per se. Quite the opposite; some very sweet things are likely to head your way. It’ll suck, rather, because the glare of the spotlight has already begun to seem too intense; you’re blistering under all this adoring attention–which lately resembles obsessive scrutiny–and there’s no escaping it, at least until the Sun travels into Virgo next week. Until that relief arrives, hang in there. Slather on some psychic sunblock, because it’s high noon of notoriety for one more week.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

You’re so focused on the big ideas and the grand dramatic gestures at times that you forget the little shit. What you ought to remember is that the little shit is often what makes life good. For example, for me the little shit takes the form of the expensive shampoo and conditioner rather than the cheap stuff, fresh strawberries in my cereal, and a cold beer on a hot day. You go to much greater lengths and expense to enact such minor improvements on your day-to-day life, when you could achieve far greater (if more subtle) effects with just a few bucks and an ounce of self-indulgence. Try it. You’ll like it.

ANSWERS

...to questions from page 4

1: D–$25,000 2: A–Clayton Tom 3: C–1923

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Even the dog can figure out some basic cues. For instance, when I’m still naked and wandering around my apartment in the morning, he knows there’s no chance of us going out; he doesn’t even bother getting up until I’ve put on pants, and shoes. Then he starts lobbying for a walk when it might actually do him some good. In other words, he gets it: Timing is everything. You should get it, too. You want what you want now. It’s understandable. What’s hard to wrap your head around is that you simply can’t have it now, but you can have it later. You just have to learn to choose your moment better than you have been. Work on that this week. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

When you were a kid, you were so proud when Mom mounted your drawings on the fridge. But at some point, you started applying standards to your work, and preventing its dissemination unless it met them. That’s all well and good; the kind of crap most kids produce is cute, and worthy of admiration, coming from them. But from an adult it’s mostly pathetic. Still, I mention this because your standards, consequently, are way too high. What you’re putting out now is actually pretty damn good–and we want to see it. Show it us, please. We’ll give you a smiley face and a gold star, if it helps.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Not a huge fan of the Olympics? Well, you should be. They’re rife with examples of determined people who possess incredible focus. You could benefit from emulating their example, as your chief failing right now is a lack of focus. You do so many things well that it almost doesn’t seem worthwhile to put in the kind of time it would take to become great at any one of them. However, should you choose to shift your status from Jill-of-all-Trades to Master-of-One, this would be an excellent week to start–but not finish. This kind of race is no 100-meter dash. It’s a triathlon that’ll last years. Yet, somehow, I think you’re up for it. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You can talk yourself into (or out of) anything–and that’s what gets you in trouble. You shouldn’t have to convince yourself of anything this week. Quell internal arguments quickly, as they’ll only confuse you and get you so twisted around that you won’t know anymore which way was the right one. Rationalizations are bullshit. Abstain from their tempting gray areas. Things are either black or white right now–or at the very least compelling and relatively unequivocal shades of grey. You don’t need to entertain lengthy debates. Just do what you’ve got to do, with a minimum of deliberation. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Most of the time you’re a diligent recycler. You’re one of the few people you know who even tries to correctly sort the trash. So I’m confused why you wouldn’t bother to kind of go through this huge bin of people and situations you’re simply tossing out the window. There are lots of reusable bits and bobs in there with all the junk you should by all rights be getting rid of. This baby-with-the-bathwater strategy is understandable, considering some of the screwed-up shit and venomous critters floating in said bathwater. But, come on. Save the baby.

Taurean chemist, Thomas Midgley, Jr., invented CFCs, as well as the idea of putting lead into gasoline (among many other things), unknowingly screwing us all over. He died (strangled in the cords of a machine he invented) without ever knowing how damaging and toxic his inventions were to life on earth. Although on an exponentially smaller scale, a couple of the things you’re up to are inadvertently causing harm to those around you (and, in some cases, yourself). It’s not your fault; you had no way of knowing–‘til now. This week, please take notice of these detrimental side effects of your activities, so you can limit or eliminate them.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Gingerly peel off your clothing after today’s bad sunburn. Take a cool bath. Smear yourself with aloe. You’ve been overexposed to a normally beneficent influence, and you got burnt. Now you’ve got to deal with that–mostly by staying away from that scorching entity, which you’re currently ultra-sensitized to. If you can manage to keep your distance for a week or so, you should be alright. If, however, you can’t logistically excuse yourself from the nuclear asshole who did this to you, do your best to insulate yourself, prepare to lose at least your outer skin, and hang on ‘til next week, when some cloud cover should help you out. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Your first instinct is to swat at the buzzing insect the moment it comes within reach, before you’ve even had a chance to assess whether it’s actually a threat. That’s silly. Certainly notice it, and pay attention to what kind of bug it is, and what it’s up to. If it merits killing by your standards, destroy it regretfully, or with glee, whichever works. But notice that a lot of the little critters buzzing around you are nothing more than annoying–and some of them might even be beneficial. The same, naturally, is even more true of the human pests flitting around bothering you. Some of them could be doing you more good than harm; consider that before unilaterally squashing all of them.

AUGUST 6TH - 27TH

WEDNESDAYS • 7:30AM

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You’re good at fitting into the cracks, and also cramming your creative expression in there, too. You could write a whole novel in the margins of a deck of playing cards, or paint masterpieces on your fingernails. But why should you? Just because you’re so endlessly flexible that you can squeeze yourself into a shoebox doesn’t mean you’re required to do that. It’s good to have that capacity, but it’s screwed up to have to constantly exercise it. Take up space this week–not simply as much as you need (which is actually quite tiny), but as much as you want. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

You might regard yourself as sovereign of your very own micronation, but until you meet the standards described in the Montevideo Convention (a permanent population, defined borders, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states (and therefore earn their recognition)), you’re nothing but a pretend monarch ruling a fiefdom in your own head. Having a vivid internal mythology is healthy, and a hell of a lot of fun. But why stop there? You can certainly make particular key elements of it dramatically real, should you choose to, and this would be a good week to try. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com.
