cent, which isn’t surprising for the largely progressive Hawaii electorate as a whole, because he’s a LIBERTARIAN. But as for Hannemann, the Civil Beat poll shows him in just the high one figures–a mere eight percent, the same percentage as those who consider themselves “undecided.” Of course, there’s nearly six weeks to go in the race. There’s plenty of time for Hannemann’s numbers to drop even further.

GABBARD WANTS TO DESTROY ISIL, BUT NOT BY ARMING SYRIAN REBELS

FOUR MEN RUNNING, BUT JUST TWO IN THE RACE Large business associations like the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce rarely write good comedy, but earlier this month, when the organization promoted its upcoming Sept. 23 Gubernatorial Candidate Forum, it did exactly that. “Save the date!” the organization tweeted on Sept. 2. “Hear from all 3 leading candidates on initiatives to shape HI’s biz climate.” The “3 leading candidates” were, of course, Republican James “Duke” Aiona, Democrat David Ige and Independent Mufi Hannemann. Considering that they’re in a four-way race for governor (you’d think that Libertarian candidate Jeff Davis–because he’s a LIBERTARIAN–would be the best friend the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce ever had, but go figure), the chamber’s tweet is just trolling, pure and simple. But until now, I didn’t have the data to show that. Thanks to the Sept. 22 Civil Beat story on its new governor’s race poll, I can say for certain that, in fact, there are just two “leading candidates,” and former Honolulu Mayor Hannemann isn’t one of them. “Democrat David Ige has a 4 percentage point lead over Republican Duke Aiona in the Hawaii governor’s race,” Civil Beat’s Chad Blair reported. “Ige, a state senator, is up 43 percent to 39 percent over Aiona, the former lieutenant governor.” As for Davis, he’s just polling two per-

LARRY ELLISON RESIGNS! According to a Sept. 18 Honolulu StarAdvertiser story, Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle and owner of 98 percent of the island of Lanai, has resigned as Oracle’s CEO. Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard, D–Hawaii, is walking a foreign policy tightrope in regards to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The congresswoman, who’s also a captain in the Hawaii National Guard and a veteran of two combat tours in the Middle East, wants very much for the U.S. to “destroy” ISIL (or as some call it, ISIS). This isn’t a simple suggestion. Indeed, MSNBC recently reported that U.S. military leaders are saying the nation needs to prepare for a “generational” war against the Sunni terror organization that seeks to butcher Shiites throughout Iraq and Syria. This is a terrifying prospect–a nation more or less permanently at war with non-governmental organizations, forever firing missiles from drone aircraft and deploying special forces teams into countries we haven’t declared war against. But at the same time, Gabbard is smart enough to know that arming “moderate” Syrian rebels (as though someone can take up arms against their government in a “moderate” fashion) and choosing a side in a civil war is a dark alley that leads not just to an eternal war, but one that’s not winnable. Today, the House of Representatives voted on a bill that authorizes the arming and training of Syrian opposition groups (presumably beyond the covert arming and training that we’re already doing). This, Gabbard tells us in a Sept. 17 press release that quotes from her remarks today on the House of Representatives floor, is not how we should go to war: “This proposed strategy actually reflects a lack of commitment to really destroy ISIL,” Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard said this afternoon during debate on the House floor, according to her Sept. 17 news release. “We must focus on one mission: to destroy ISIL and other Islamic extremists who’ve declared war on us. Our mission should not be to topple the Assad regime, which would make the situation in the region even worse and more unstable than it is today. We’ve heard this story before. We know how it ends. Look at Iraq. Look at Libya. Clearly, our leaders have not learned their lesson. We must focus on taking out our enemies and investing in

our own country here at home.” Of course, a few hours after Gabbard’s press release went out, the bill sending aid to the rebels passed the House, 273-156. USA! USA!

In the summer of 2012, Haleakala National Park officials proposed a new “Commercial Services Plan” that would, among other things, restrict various commercial activities in hopes of reducing the “crowding and congestion” that’s apparently been rising at the park. “Crowding and inappropriate behavior have contributed to a loss of sense of place, which is often the initial reason visitors come to the park; interference with traditional

cultural uses; and increased negative perceptions of the park by Native Hawaiians,” stated the plan. “Commercial tours are believed to have contributed to these impacts in the past.” Well, that plan is in operation, and today park officials announced that next year will include five “commercial-free” days: • Lolopua, one of the two days commonly known as zenith noon (July 18, 2015) • Start of Makahiki (date determined using the Bishop Museum’s Planetarium calendar

“I’ll only be shopping here on Sundays when the ship docks.”

“Ellison, who turned 70 last month, guided the Redwood City, Calif.-based company for more than 35 years to make it the world’s largest database-software company and one of the biggest providers of business programs. Oracle’s products have become the backbone of modern commerce and industry. The company has a market capitalization of more than $185 billion and produces annual revenue of $38 billion.” As for what Ellison will do now, the story doesn’t really say, though it did report that he’d take on the titles of Chairman and “Chief Technology Officer,” whatever that is. Of course, we’re talking about a guy who owns a yacht more powerful than many nation’s navies. He could always just move to Hawaii and install himself as Overlord of Lanai (he also owns Island Air, but they don’t really need an overlord at the moment), which I’d imagine has to be one of the best jobs around. ■

The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa recently earned LEED Silver EBOM (Existing Building Operations and Maintenance) status, which was awarded for its commitment to environmental sustainability. The Ka‘anapali resort is the first building in the state to be granted the LEED-EBOM certification. “We are so pleased to have been awarded the LEED Silver EBOM status in recognition of our conservation and energy efficiency efforts, as well as our longstanding commitment to sustainability,” said Hyatt Regency Maui General Manager Allan Farwell in a Sept. 12 news release. “We hope that as we preserve and protect our natural environment in Maui, our commitment inspires our guests to make similar conscious efforts in the various parts of the world where they live.” The certification follows a two-year renovation throughout the resort including at its dining outlets, pool area and Drums of the Pacific Luau. In order to make the necessary environmentally friendly enhancements, Hyatt Regency Maui’s operations team worked closely with property owner Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc. and with thirdparty consultants Green Building Hawaii. The resort installed reduced flow shower heads in all of its guest rooms, saving six million gallons of water annually. It also installed an intelligent, weather-based, real-time irrigation system combined with grey water irrigation, reducing landscape water use by more than 27 percent. The resort also uses non-turf landscaping which is 100 percent native, in addition to utilizing adaptive plants. Guest rooms are now fitted with motionsensing air conditioning that turns off when lanai doors are open, or when guests leave the room. The resort also has placed recycling receptacles in every guest room. In addition, more than half a million pounds of leftover and scrap food will now be donated to local pig farms for feed and compost; complimentary digital newspapers are now available for guests through most mobile devices and computers; digital signage has replaced printed signage; and more than 70 percent of purchased items are local, recycled or made with a renewable resource. The two-year effort made by Hyatt Regency Maui associates, managers and executives that led to the property’s LEED certification aligns with Hyatt Thrive, Hyatt’s global corporate social responsibility philosophy, and immediately follows the unveiling of Hyatt’s new 2020 environmental sustainability strategy, according to resort officials. Known as the Hyatt 2020 Vision, these new environmental goals define a suite of measurable and actionable targets across three focus areas–use resources thoughtfully, build smart, and innovate and inspire.

The LEED EBOM rating system is administered by the U.S. Green Building Council. To qualify, buildings have to show a significant increase in diverting waste from landfills and an increase in energy and water efficiency, as well

News Of The Weird NEW FRONTIERS IN AMERICAN VACUOUSNESS The WE cable network disclosed in August that it had ordered a nine-episode adaptation of a British series, Sex Box, in which a couple enters a large opaque chamber on stage and has intercourse. The pair, pre- and post-coitally, are clothed and seated before a panel of probably D-List celebrities, and will respond to questions and comment on their feelings and techniques (likely enduring praise and criticisms about their “work”). The series will debut sometime in 2015. (However, as the Daily Beast website pointed out, it might also be true that still, in 2015, even a split-second’s glimpse of a female nipple on any broadcast TV show would create a national scandal.)

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT The “trendy” 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin, located adjacent to the Berlin Zoo and offering some of the best views of the city from its floor-to-ceiling windows, famously positioned the rest rooms of its Monkey Bar in front of the windows. Also, those heeding nature’s call are clearly visible to gawkers. Of course, guests are warned, by the Trip Advisor website and by the hotel itself

with the admonition, “Please be careful. Not only the monkeys are watching.”

UM, NO London designer Gigi Barker recently unveiled the Skin chair (priced at the equivalent of about $2,500), made of leather but with a “pheromone-impregnated silicone base” that makes it feel (and smell, perhaps) like one is “lounging in the fleshy, comforting folds of a man’s belly.” The Skin was scheduled for exhibition this month at the London Design Festival.

CONCUBINE INSURANCE? China’s insurance companies offer some of the world’s quirkiest policies, according to a September Reuters dispatch from Hong Kong. People’s Insurance Group, for example, will pay out in case a customer’s children display disappointingly “mischievous and destructive” habits. The Ancheng company offers a policy protecting a customer in case his mouth is burned eating “hotpot.” Ping An Insurance Group (actually, the world’s second-largest by market value) has recently offered an “accidental pregnancy before honeymoon” policy, and is one of three companies that competed to sell couples compensation in case a marriage is disrupted by a “concubine.” ■

14 IN ‘14 FOR OUR ANNUAL FASHION ISSUE, HERE ARE 14 HAWAII STYLE MAKERS YOU NEED TO KNOW Maui’s hyperlocal fashion scene is hip, hot and handson. Here, being stylish doesn’t mean buying at chain stores. Rather, it’s an art form expressed through the work of local designers, your own DIY-cut shirts and shorts to the way you tie your pareo. Though it’s hard to imagine, fashion is more than bikinis and coverups, though in this heat, who wants to wear anything else? In this year’s fashion issue, we’ve decided to look at the island’s most prolific style-makers. These are the scene stealers who’ve crimped and cut their way through cloth and metal to bring us truly unique madeon-Maui styles. These designers tell us what local fashion means to them, where they shop and even give out a few insider tips for the fashion-forward.

Koa Johnson lives and breathes local fashion. To his Kojo Couture line, fashion is a form of escapism, not imprisonment. This is what he teaches as an instructor at the UH Maui Fashion Technology program. There, he creates using off-the-wall materials like Ti-leaf, trashbags and wire screen, but prefers using evening wear fabrics– satin, velveteen, chiffon–for his gown creations. This kind of fashion is art, and every piece he designs includes an emotional connection. He works constantly on new looks with his muse Brittney Baker and hairstylist and makeup artist Ry-n Shimabuku. Together they create stunning visuals in his photo shoots, like this week’s cover shot, and the layout to the left. In Kojo Couture, fashion is all about constant change, with a keen focus on artistic couture and avant garde, creating the diversity of form that Johnson craves.

MALIE MORAN

You can build your own accessories at Sophie Grace’s jewelry bar, just one of the ingenious embellishment concepts you’ll find at the Paia store. People were buying the jewelry dangling around founder Jamie Shepherd’s neck while she was working at Maggie Coulombe’s Whaler’s Village store, until Coulombe eventually asked her, “Why don’t you start your own line?” Shepherd says Sophie Grace started on a wing and a prayer, but her beautiful shop in Paia says it’s more than a hobby. Shepherd’s philosophy is that “It’s hard to have a bad day in an amazing outfit.” She says she likes to feel like she’s lounging by the pool, even if just answering emails. “As a local designer, one purchase can make the rent,” she says. “Sometimes buying local can be more expensive, but that artist or business owner has probably put enough love behind it to make it worth the extra expense.” For local shopping, her go-to list is Pink by Nature, Otaheite and Theluckyhoney.com. Shepherd’s styling tip: “If you are not sure, Pinterest it. I had a pair of boyfriend jeans I wasn’t sure how to style. I looked it up on Pinterest and found eight different looks based on items I already had.”

Hawaii Red Fashion Blog; Hawaiiredstyle.com PHOTO BY OLIVIER KONING

Moran’s Hawaii RED blog originally started in 2008 as a lifestyle and culture magazine. But within two years she refocused on Honolulu street style, designers and fashion events. At Hawaiiredstyle.com, she connects Hawaii and fashion with posts once a week and daily Instagrams. This year, she published the pictorial book Honolulu Street Style. As for her own fashion sense, Moran says she can’t live without earrings and a lot of dresses. Her favorite local places to shop are Roberta Oaks (Robertaoaks.com) and Muumuu Heaven (Muumuuheaven.com). Moran offers this

vogue tip from local stylist Jade Rabut: Always dress with a smile and confidence, they don’t go out of fashion. Moran has a keen eye for spotting fashion on the street and isn’t afraid to ask for a shot to post. She says don’t get stuck without great footwear. “This happens a lot when we are shooting street style or covering an event,” she says. “We see someone in a great outfit, but then they have slippers on. It just kills the outfit. Even though I love my Havaianas, I think it’s best to always keep a pair of ballet flats or heels in the car for when you go out!”

SARA PLESSET Buy: Etsy.com/indieattire; the Mercantile, Makawao; Bikini Market, Kihei Sara Plesset started Indie Attire in 2010, making all the bikinis in the collection by hand in Makawao. This isn’t surprising, given that her philosophy is pretty much “Sewn here, not flown here.” Indie Attire would like to bring local, handmade and upcycle to the forefront of fashion on Maui, hoping that people will understand the need to change the fashion industry. She scrounges materials at local second hand stores, sometimes using gently used but often brand-new swim items, which she cuts up, creating unique one-of-a-kind bikinis. Her reason is simple–she says the new fabric made in China harms the ecosystem. In contrast, her upcycled fabric is a source of inspiration, reduces her carbon footprint and is worth her customers money. Upcoming looks from her will include high-waisted, lace-up bikini bottoms and pieced-together bandeau tops. To shop local, Plesset recommends Rainbow Attic and Elise consignment stores.

CHRISTINE KOBZEFF Pinksofoxy.com Christine Kobzeff says she started her blog as a makeup blog, eventually getting more and more comfortable on camera. She moved to Maui in 2000 from Oregon, but she and her husband Michael travel often. Her wanderlust inspires a lot of her look, and as well as thrifting and do-it-yourself projects. She started her YouTube vlog where she does a lot of DIY fashion projects, upcycling, thrifting tips and healthy living. You can catch her videos on how to dip-dye thrifted shorts or 18 ways to tie a pareo (all include a blog post of how-to’s). Kobzeff says her fashion forecast for fall will be tribal patterns, layers and ethnic inspirations, but you can follow along with her bohemian beach flair online. Her tip for dressing is to go nude–that is, have at least one pair of nude shoes since they match everything and make your legs look longer. For shopping local, she loves The Enchantress.

ARIE stands for Art Remains In Everything, and it shows through ARIE Bikini’s luxurious and unique swimwear collection. Ariana Hornkohl came to Maui from the Southwest determined to create beachy bikinis. She attended UH Maui’s Fashion Institute, learned sewing and basic design skills and worked for WINGS Hawaii as a seamstress, all the while gaining valuable experience and credibility as she worked to build her own company. Her 2014 collection embraced both her desert background and love of lush jungles and sandy beaches. For her next collection, she says dark plums, new limited prints and deep neutrals are just some of the things she’s working with. Her signature suits feature seamless reversible designs that are effortless, durable and chic. She says her favorite spots to shop are Nuage Blu and Biasa Rose.

Buy: Mahina Boutiques; shopmahina.com

Marsha Sabourin says the ocean is her muse, which helps her create clothing from cotton that’s relaxed, ageless and timeless. She says all ages can appreciate the apparel and natural fabrics in her Siganka collection. Likewise, her style tips focus on the natural body: eat organic food, make a daily ritual of movement, moisturize, adorn yourself and laugh. Her fashion insider tip is all shop talk: “Forget worrying about ‘size,’” she says. “Buy the item that fits, the piece that conveys how you want to look and feel. If a ‘sizing’ label bothers you, just cut it out of the garment!” Her local shopping recommendations are Holiday & Co and Pearl Butik.

Joe Wilmot and Jody Curtin opened the first Mahina in 2006. Today they have boutiques across Hawaii. The fashion culture at Mahina doesn’t follow collections, trends or seasons–new stuff shows up on a weekly basis. Wilmot explains when they opened, they noticed that there were a lot of boutiques for visitors, but none for locals. Their philosophy was to focus on local needs, tastes and budgets, and then everything else would work itself out. Curtin swears by Mahina fashion, insisting that 99 percent of her wardrobe is Mahina. They recommend Imrie and Nuage Blue in Paia for shopping. Their biggest fashion advice? Fit, fit, fit and fit, and pick colors complementary to your hair and skin tone.

Buy: Sailbagsmaui.com; Naish Maui; Maui Ocean Center; Biasa Rose; Fairmont Kea Lani

Tiffany Chou has been designing jewelry in her self-titled line since 2010. A Maui girl (and Seabury Hall alum) who moved to New York, she says her muse is the little mermaid. It makes sense then that this year saw the debut of her swimsuit collection. Chou classifies her aesthetic as clean with a touch of unexpected. She says she steers clear of trendy and goes for timeless. Her closet covets white tees and layers. Her style tip: “Accessorizing completes an outift,” she says. “If you feel like something’s missing, throw on a few rings and/or necklace and earrings. Make sure hair complements the outfit and/or jewelry. If you’re wearing a showy pair of earrings, make sure your hair is up so everyone can see those bad boys.” Her favorite places to shop on Maui are Alice in Hulaland and the Four Seasons Spa.

TERI EDMONDS Buy: If The Shoe Fits (21 N. Market St., Wailuku); Teriedmonds.com Teri Edmonds opened her local shoe store, If the Shoe Fits in 2001 and began developing her own line of shoes, the hot biskit in 2006 to fill the niche for large sizing. By 2010 Edmonds opened her shoe repair business under the same roof, and started the Maui Shoe Academy, exploring leather craft and shoemaking. Her latest line of shoes features hand crafted upcycled materials, completing her goal to be 100% Maui made. She utilizes materials like naturally tanned upcountry deer hides for shoes and handbags. This year she has layered her creativity into her blog at the Secret Life of Shoes, adding segments like Shoes 101 on shoe repair. She also contributes to Hitched on Maui, with how-to’s for wedding shoes. This October she plans to launch her new improved site at Wailuku First Friday, and post at MauiArtisan.com. Her insider tips include Natural hair and makeup, for all-time ease, coral lip gloss for easy after-beach spruce up, and a small heel to lengthen the leg.

Geri Emata of Sailbags Maui created her company when she learned that the kite surfing sails ultimately end up in landfills. She developed a way to upcycle the kites, transforming them into unique Sailbags. Emata is in the process of finalizing a kickstarter campaign to fund more product development, hardware, equipment and an updated website. She’s also working on expanding windsurfing sails to her upcycling resources. Right now, she works with Naish to get her recycled kites. Her collections fluctuate with the inventory she gets, and offers kiters a free bag with a kite donation. Emata is also working on a backpack design. She says everyone should have a Sailbag tote–after all, a girl can never have too many bags.

CHANDA LABRADOR & DANIELLE BOAZ Buy: Honey A Sweet Boutique (105 N. Market St., Wailuku); Honeysweetboutique.com Chanda Labrador and Danielle Boaz decided to take their passion in art, jewelry and fashion and turn it into a chic boutique in Wailuku called Honey A Sweet Boutique. Boaz is a licensed/practicing esthetician and mother of three while Labrador is a practicing registered nurse, but their partnership fuels their store, which features Hawaii-based designers, artists and jewelers. They want shoppers to explore Hawaii’s contemporary apparel, beach-inspired jewelry, art and lifestyle with them. They’re excited about Indah’s Joie De Vie fall collection and the exclusive color and patterns with Khush clothing, the wearable art on Tara B’s hats, hand-crafted jewelry and Samudra clutches. For styling tips they say, ”Always pick one sexy! If you wanna show legs, keep the cleavage modest, and vice versa.” Oh, and if you’re in a bikini, always throw on a cover-up when in public and not at the beach.

The 2014 TEDxMaui Experience Got 20 minutes for your thoughts?

dreamers in music, performance, business, politics, art, science and health now share what they know about the world in 20 minutes or less. It’s common to go to the event looking forward to one presentation, but connecting with another. Limiting the talks’ length forces speakers to be concise. There are also breaks throughout the event, in case your brain feels like constant stimulation will blow it up. But these are hardly points of mere relaxation–event-goers are swept into the MACC’s courtyard, where they can find conversation, networking, art installations from Maui’s Maggie Sutrov and Oahu’s Andrew Binkley, beverages, live entertainment and booth demonstrations. The Maui Makers will also hold an interactive exhibition on the fine art of making. TEDxMaui runs the whole day, with registration starting at 7:30am (you get a gift bag). The talks start at 9am, with conversation and leg stretching breaks every 90 minutes. There’s also an after-party at the end, with a rocking band, no-host bar and more discussion until around 7:30pm. Thats a full 12 hours of TED submersion–a bargain at just under 14 cents a minute.

ike many people, I could use a little life-changing inspiration to satisfy and reconfirm our place on the planet. This Sunday, Sept. 28, I’ll find my intellectual divine intervention at TEDxMaui. For the first TEDx talks on Maui a few years ago, I was a total virgin. I had heard about TED and YouTubed it, but you won’t get that overwhelming feeling that the secret of the universe was on the tip of your tongue until you are there in the MACC’s Castle Theater with everyone else. “Anyone with a thirst for knowledge can have a profound experience at TEDxMaui,” says Sara Tekula, a co-founder for TEDxMaui. “I believe in this community’s ability to make a difference in the world, both locally and globally, and this event is where change-makers get inspired and subsequently find one another.” The TED mantra is “ideas worth spreading.” Originally, TED talks couldn’t stray from its name–which stands for Technology, Education and Design. But you can find all sorts of talks at TEDx events, which are like franchises of the official TED. Some of the world’s most progressive thinkers and

Film

by Barry Wurst II

The Ice Man ‘A Walk Among The Tombstones’ is dark, but detached ★★★★★ Rated R/ 113 Min.

T

he opening moments of A Walk Among the Tombstones are, like much of the movie, quiet and contemplative. Liam Neeson, playing police officer Matt Scudder under layers of hair, walks into a bar (no, this isn’t a set-up for a joke). He sits by himself, away from the view of others, and gulps down hearty shots of liquor, when a couple of other guys walk into the bar. Following a shotgun blast, the bartender is dead, the two killers are on the run and Scudder, guns blazing, is running after them. It’s an electrifying way to open, but this isn’t an action movie. We catch up with Scudder eight years later. It’s 1999 and he’s now a clean-shaven private detective. He’s just been hired by a grieving husband (played superbly by Dan Stevens) to track down his wife’s murderer. It seems a pair of serial killers have been abducting, torturing and mutilating women throughout New York. Scudder wants no part of it, until he listens to an audio recording of one of the victims being murdered. Suddenly, a sense of duty overtakes Scudder, who is eight years

sober and seemingly fearless. I love that Neeson has emerged as an unlikely but potent new action hero but, again, this isn’t that type of movie. Scudder is the kind of role Neeson might have played during his initial emergence as a great actor, when he did films like Schindler’s List and Michael Collins. His latest is too real-world, brooding and downbeat to be in the same category as pop fantasies like Taken and Non-Stop. Yet, if there’s a consistency to Neeson’s type of screen hero, it’s how he fights against relatable, homegrown obstacles. Whether he’s saving his family (the Taken series), protecting an airliner (Non-Stop), retrieving his stolen identity (Unknown) or surviving the wild (The Grey), Neeson is always vulnerable, believable and compelling, in the same way Harrison Ford was in these kinds of movies. A Walk Among the Tombstones should have been a slam dunk but its oddly unsatisfying. Director Scott Frank is best known as one of Hollywood’s top tier screenwriters. Having penned Minority Report and Dead Again, he’s a perfect choice for crafting a hard-boiled detective story. The 1999 period details are uncannily

As my granddad used to say, it's always darkest before the next picture

precise: since Y2K fears were everywhere, we see billboards for Y2K preparedness and even a promo for the acclaimed Kevin Spacey revival of The Iceman Cometh on Broadway. Frank knows the look of this world, and his exceptionally strong supporting cast embodies the desperation and ruthlessness of this neo noir story. In addition to Stevens, there’s Olafur Darri Olafsson as a potential suspect and David Harbour as a monster with a fiendish smile. Both are unforgettable. Despite the skill of the filmmaking and the cast, I was distracted by aspects of the story that didn’t add up. There’s also a subplot of a young boy who assists Scud-

der on his case: while these interludes are well played and not “cute,” they still belong in another movie. Most of all, the film’s insistent darkness put me off. The thematically comparable Seven was a tighter mouse trap and kept its most horrible moments out of view. This one isn’t as fresh and shows us more of the killer’s truly sick behavior than necessary. At one point, someone asks Scudder, “Why aren’t you scared?” We learn the character’s tragic secret and the reason for his unflappability but that quality makes Neeson’s performance appear somewhat disengaged. His character is as detached and cold as the film. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Let Mary Poppins advise: “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. Find that fun and snap! The job’s a game!” When it comes to work, your scales are way out of whack. You either work too hard (and are consequently miserable) or play too much (to escape the drudgery of your job). Balance that scale: You need to find something you really and truly enjoy about your job. If you can’t, for goodness’ sake find something else so you can quit. At the very least, discover and nurture a creative outlet for your passions (besides partying) that will at least make your employment seem worthwhile—as a means to get to paint, travel, kite board, or whatever. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Orthodox Christians believe that Jesus ended his earthly life by ascending bodily into Heaven. The Holy Prepuce, or his foreskin, would be one of the only physical remainders left behind. It’s said to possess various miraculous powers, just like your dick or vulva. The Prepuce is missing; no one knows where it is now. Sadly, your genitals’ magical powers are similarly misplaced; sex alone isn’t currently enough to work the miracles you usually take for granted. You’ll find that nothing like them is even remotely possible unless you feel it with your heart, not just your horniness, and then you’ll find that the “victim” of the enchantment you weave is most likely to be yourself. This, however, is not a bad thing. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Most Sagittarians just run with what they want, often to the ends of the earth, with discarded or misled people or pieces of self strewn along the way. (If you’re one of those few Sags who reacts against the power of your passions, strictly refusing yourself even the most minor of indulgences, disregard this horoscope. Concentrate on loosening up, instead.) As for the rest of you: stop being such selfish freaks. If it means sacrificing some of the things you want, to give someone else what they need this week, for goodness’ sake, just do it. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Contrary to popular opinion, you are neither rock nor island. You depend on your community of chosen folk, and they count on you as well, when you’re not too busy neglecting them for your work or other “important stuff.” The thing is, you need them more than you think you do. Sadly, too many Caps discover this the hard way, when something really screwed up comes along and they realize that their net has eroded and withered in their absence. Don’t let this happen to you. You have a chance to really be there for the people you want to stand by you. Don’t let them down. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

In at least three recent dreams I’ve noted that I was dreaming without taking that realization to the next logical step and having sex with celebrities, flying like Superman, being worshiped like a god, or all three at once. You, too, have missed out on numerous opportunities to take advantage of a favorable situation. Luckily, there are one or two more chances remaining this week to at least momentarily live out some of your silliest and most compellingly unrealistic fantasies. Watch for them, and grab them. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Just because your lover doesn’t keep a picture of you as their phone’s lock screen doesn’t mean they don’t love you. Au contraire, they’re just showing it in different ways, and probably ones that are far more meaningful than a stupid picture on their phone. Stop looking for love in exactly the language you’re used to. Instead, be more open to it coming in various surprising, exciting, and eminently cool shapes. If you’re willing to be romantically multilingual, you’re likely to have a thrilling and fascinating week.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

This week, do what you do best: Remake reality to suit you. You Rams are notorious for impetuously rushing into a situation, horns lowered, and just bashing at it until it yields to your indomitable will. This is unnerving and daunting to nearby observers, and disempowering and frightening for those actually in danger of getting gored on your unstoppable resolve. Consequently, tremendous efforts have been made to train you out of that mostly bad habit. However, there are occasions where it’s more than useful—it’s necessary. This is one.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Feng shui your apartment, or at least rearrange the furniture. You need some stirring up, and the best way to do that is to mess with your home. New things will rise to the top of your personality simply by moving the couch, rotating your bed 90°, or switching rooms with one of your roommates. Pieces of you are buried in the dust bunnies in that heretofore unreachable corner of your bedroom, or between the couch cushions. They’ve been there so long, you almost forget about those parts of yourself. Take them out and wear them like old clothes that have been out of rotation so long they’re cool again.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You are the triumphant warrior returning home with the severed head of the Medusa-like monster held high, only to be told: “Um, that’s not Medusa. Poor thing. She sure is ugly, but she’s no gorgon. Sorry!” All that hard-won pride transmutes instantly to utter sheepishness and remorse, and, yes, trepidation, as you realize you have to go out there again and face the real fiend. Nevertheless, that’s what you need to do. Apologize for the unintended decapitation, then head out to do the real work you set out to do—taking down the villain in your personal storyline. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

You are the ocean, effectively. At any given moment, there are parts of you heaving with building-high waves, ravenous beasts surging through the cold water of impenetrable depths, seething currents and riptides that can suck the legs out from under whoever stands in their way (including yourself), as well as vast areas that serenely ripple with relative calm. It can be downright alarming to some how quickly you seem to change from day to day, until they realize that it’s all you; you’re just the most complex and bewildering person they know. Most of us have figured that out; gently clue in the remaining few still lingering fearfully in the dark.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Time for some me-time. You’re so used to your typical frenzy of activity, and the forced socialization that comes with, that you’ve forgotten how to hang out with just yourself. No need to disappear—preparatory phone calls, emails, and outgoing voicemail messages are a good idea. But at some point—for at least a couple of days, if not the whole week—lock your door, unplug the phone and don’t speak to anyone unless they’re selling you a cup of coffee or renting you a DVD. This is your time. Don’t screw it up by sharing it with anyone else. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Snakes lurk malignly in the tall grass, rife with aggression and venom. Just wandering into their vicinity could be enough to trigger a potentially lethal bite. Luckily, I’m here to warn you not to walk in those dangerous territories this week. Stick to the paths and don’t put any appendages where you can’t clearly see them. That goes for fingers, tongues, and dicks, not just feet. I mean it. Be adventurous next week. But just for now, keep tabs on any part of yourself you’d like to keep. You don’t know what might be skulking just out of sight, but it’s a pretty good guess that it isn’t good. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com.
