Heritage tourism is on fire!

HISTORY FANS APPARENTLY HAVE DEEP POCKETS

MAUI NEWS CHEERS TEDDY ROOSEVELT– DESPITE HIS DARK HISTORY WITH HAWAII Speaking of history–and specifically, people who’ve twisted Hawaiian culture for their own ends–former President Theodore Roosevelt has been in the news lately. Is there any American president so revered? His mug is even chiseled into the side of Mount Rushmore. We call him a “progressive” today for supporting things

racism–views and actions that should give any newspaper publisher in the state pause before calling the former president “courageous.” Bradley also quoted Roosevelt in 1896, a year that saw the future Rough Rider and president rise from unknown New York police commissioner to Assistant Secretary of the Navy: “We should annex Hawaii immediately,” TR had said. “It was a crime against the United States, it was a crime against the white civilization, not to annex it two years and a half ago. The delay did damage that is perhaps irreparable; for it meant that at the critical period of the islands’ growth the influx of population consisted, not of white Americans, but of low caste laborers from the yellow races.” Think about those words: “low caste laborers from the yellow races.” Indeed, Bradley wrote that in 1897, Roosevelt “deemed the Chinese a ‘race-foe’ and called upon the United States to maintain ‘raceselfishness’ to exclude ‘the dangerous alien

Given that Hawaii’s economy continues to live and die on the fortunes of tourism, Pacific Business News last week gave us a brief primer on the virtues of “cultural heritage tourism.” On Sept. 24, in anticipation of the Hawaii Heritage & Hospitality Forum in Honolulu at the end of October, Pacific Business News posted a short interview with “cultural heritage tourism” expert Andrew Witt. Instead of luring tourists to Hawaii with things like luaus that feature non-Hawaiian dances, non-Hawaiian food and leis made from flowers grown halfway around the world, consultants like Witt advise communities to use their own, authentic history as a tourism draw. The whole point of the interview came at the end of the piece, when PBN reporter Jason Ubay asks Witt why Hawaii should care about “cultural heritage tourism.” “Economics,” Witt replied. “Basic demographics are upper-income tourists who stay longer and spend more. Most studies, even those that go back 20 or more years, show that cultural and heritage tourists spend 150 percent more than other tourists.” Forgive me, but wasn’t “cultural heritage tourism” an attempt to stop turning a community’s history into mere commodities? Then again, given that I’ve put the phrase “cultural heritage tourism” in quotes throughout this brief commentary, it follows that I never really believed that in the first place.

like land preservation and not supporting guys working in unsafe sausage factories that got ground up into said sausage, and to be fair, these are indeed progressive viewpoints (a century ago or now). Often the subject of sprawling hagiographies and sweeping documentaries, old TR– along with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt–just got the PBS/Ken Burns treatment in the new docu-series The Roosevelts: An Intimate History. And in a rare show of actually advocating an opinion in its daily staff editorial, The Maui News on Sept. 24 called the series both “well done” and “excellent.” “Theodore’s boisterous and courageous leadership style, love of nature and dedication to a progressive agenda are traced from San Juan Hill and the Rough Riders to his years in the White House–and beyond,” states the editorial. “His doomed attempt to return to the White House as a candidate of the Bull Moose Party in 1912 is a sad part of the story. He left politics too early and his efforts to return were rebuffed.” Now I haven’t seen Burns’ series so I can’t speak to how the filmmaker portrays TR’s darker side, but I have read a book or two on Theodore Roosevelt–enough to know that The Maui News’ characterization of him as a “wonderful leader” committed to “altruism” is beyond laughable. It’s an especially bizarre description for a man

who, for reasons that had nothing to do with geopolitics or strategy, played a key role in the American takeover of Hawaii. You can play the “context of the times” game, but even by 1900 standards, TR was a straight-up racist and white supremacist–facts that don’t appear anywhere in today’s Maui News editorial. But unlike a president like, say, Richard Nixon, who generally inspires most historians to point out what a prick the guy was, TR usually gets a pass. I say most, because historian James Bradley’s revisionist 2009 book The Imperial Cruise is very different. Where other historians gloss over or even ignore Theodore Roosevelt’s racism, Bradley thrusts it in the reader’s face: “In 1894,Teddy had penned an article entitled ‘National Life and Character’ in which he wrote that Blacks were ‘a perfectly stupid race’ and it would take ‘many thousand years’ before the Black became even ‘as intellectual as the [ancient] Athenian.’” But that was way back in 1894. Certainly

Was TR really "wonderful?"

TR’s views changed, right? No, not really. Here’s Bradley quoting Roosevelt directly from 1897: “Nineteenth-century democracy needs no more complete vindication for its existence than the fact that it has kept for the white race the best portions of the new world’s surface.” Ironically, it’s Roosevelt’s views and actions concerning Hawaii that most show off his

who would be ruinous to the white race.’” But even a barbarian like TR wasn’t above nuancing his racial overview. According to Bradley, Roosevelt actually admired part of the “yellow race:” “Roosevelt… thought the Japanese people were more racially similar to Americans than were the Russians.” Roosevelt’s desire to further the interests of the “white race” continued through the end of his presidency. According to Bradley, in February 1909, Roosevelt wrote a letter to Senator Philander Knox describing Hawaii as “America’s racial bulwark in the Pacific” and calling for the importation of “tens of thousands of Spaniards, Portuguese or Italians or of any of the other European races… in order that the islands may be filled with a white population of our general civilization and culture.” Like I said, I don’t know how Burns treats any of this in his PBS series. But I do know how The Maui News chose to handle it. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

Corporate Welfare, County Of Maui-Style PHOTO COURTESY WIKIMEDIA

County budget committee finally reviews Economic Development Revolving Fund projects

Who wants some?

L

ooks like the County of Maui may soon spend about a million tax dollars on beer brewing, deep well drilling, patient care software, stem cell research and a new restaurant called “Da Car Wash Cafe.” Back in February, the Maui County Office of Economic Development (OED) started a new experiment of sorts in the world of corporate welfare (as though a government office of “economic development” isn’t already corporate welfare-ish enough). It’s called the Economic Development Revolving Fund (EDRF). County officials billed this new fund as a way to help boost the local economy. “This is a visionary program that could become a catalyst for growth for many busi-

nesses out there,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa, according to a Feb. 25 Maui News story. “By providing the capital, we provide opportunities for business to expand and hire new people and buy more goods and services from our community.” Here’s how the county’s Office of Economic Development describes the fund in its own program guide: “To be considered for the EDRF an applicant should have a primary place of business that already exists in the County,” states the OED guide. “The Office of Economic Development (OED) is looking for applicants who want to foster continued growth in their company. These companies should have a strong balance sheet, have established markets that show growth potential, and show strong potential for creating living wage employment for our residents. The fund is designed to assist companies with these qualifications to expand their business through additional locations, new equipment, exporting opportunities, R&D for a demonstrated capability or product, or to commercialize capability or a new product.” Grants start at $50,000 and must have a “one

to one” match in cash (which can come from a grant or loan). What’s more, entities–for-profit or not–that already have county grants aren’t apparently eligible. In short, the county only wants well-run companies with “strong balance sheets” to apply, but to be fair, why would such a company need a boost from the county? Anyway, five applicants–all for-profit corporations–saw their money requests appear on yesterday’s Maui County Council Budget and Finance Committee meeting agenda. One official at the County Council told me this morning that other firms have apparently been considered for grants from the fund, but these are the first applicants to make it this far. The committee merely reviewed the proposals– actually approving will require a committee vote. As for when that might happen, Committee chairman Mike White hasn’t yet said. Here are the five proposals, listed in the Sept. 30 Budget & Finance Committee meeting agenda, which together add up to $1 million: 1. Uptown Service, Inc. would like $200,000 to “convert its car wash facility to a restaurant called ‘Da Car Wash Cafe’” 2. Alpha, Inc. wants $125,000 to “purchase a National T-32 drill rig to offer lower cost drilling to deep well projects” 3. Maui Innovation Group LLC would like

$175,000 “for medical care management software to better manage patient care” 4. HNU Photonics LLC wants $250,000 “for infrastructure and equipment for stem cell research” 5. Aumakua Holdings, Inc. would like $250,000 “for equipment for a Maui Brewing Co. facility in Kihei to add beverages and increase exportation” At least one resident found all this, well, distasteful. “Government should confine itself to the basic functions needed by a society: defense against aggressors, roads, police and courts, education of the young, hospitals, care for those unable to care for themselves, mutual assistance in time of disaster,” Wailuku resident Sally Raisbeck wrote in a Sept. 30 email to MauiTime, which arrived after the meeting and first alerted us to it. “Collecting taxes is unfortunately another necessary function… This goes directly to whether or not you believe in capitalism. If you do, the government should not involve itself in supporting some businesses against others. If the brewery is successful, it will be able to expand itself. The county should not be involved.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

There are a variety of animal rescue groups on Maui trying to find homes for thousands of cats and kittens every year, but it’s a neverending battle. That’s why the Maui Humane Society (MHS) and The Humane Society of the United States have partnered to identify solutions to reduce the number of free roaming and feral animals on the island and across the nation. They’re hosting a free public presentation next month on their initial research findings of community cats. Dr. John Hadidian and Dr. John Boone will present the initial findings of cat population research they conducted at Kanaha State Park and Iao Valley. Hadidian and Boone will discuss the challenges and opportunities on how best to humanely and effectively reduce free-roaming cat populations, as well as how the public can help. Members of the Maui County Animal Coalition, including the Maui SPCA and Feline Foundation of Maui, will also discuss their ongoing efforts and services. The presentation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 6-8pm at the Kihei Community Center, located at 303 E. Lipoa St. in Kihei. MHS encourages participants to attend the event armed with questions and suggestions to help determine how Maui residents can best work together to protect all animals. The other day I was flipping through radio stations on my way to work when I happened to catch a brief item on American Public Media’s Performance Today on Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York–specifically, the mundane and sometimes unique items that the center’s lost and found department deals with every year. That got me thinking about how our own Maui Arts & Cultural Center deals with

items that concert-goers sometimes leave behind. The MACC’s website (Mauiarts.org) had some info about their lost & found policies– ”Bank cards will be destroyed after one week (7 days). Other found items will be donated to charity or discarded after 30 days.”–but for stats and details, I simply asked Barbara Trecker, the MACC’s marketing director. “So far this year we have about 240 items on the list,” she emailed me this morning. “Everything from Bibles to ‘lost soles’ ie slippahs & shoes (individuals & pairs). In 2013 the total was about 300 items.” Trecker said those items largely consisted of reading glasses, sunglasses, sweaters, shirts and keys. She added that they source wallets and credit cards and return them as soon as possible. As far as the most unique item found in

of Imua Family Services as part of the organizations “Fuel Up. Do Good” program. “I am both grateful and thrilled that Ohana Fuels reached out to partner with Imua Family Services over the next quarter,” said Dean Wong, Imua’s Executive Director. “It’s an amazing opportunity for local businesses and local nonprofits to work together for the better of our community and to meet the needs of our many families. We encourage everyone to fuel up at any Ohana Fuels locations so that the most good can flow back into our community.” The “Fuel Up. Do Good” program will help bolster Imua as it provides comprehensive early childhood development services to children and their families with the resources needed to achieve their full potential in life. Each year, more than 3,000 community members on Maui and Lanai receive support from Imua through its Infant & Child Development Program, Early Childhood Development Program, Newborn Hearing Screening and Camp Imua. This year has been a period of expansion and growth for Imua. Currently the organization is in collaboration with Easter Seals Hawaii to convert Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s old 10,000 square foot property on Wakea Avenue in Kahului into the future Imua Family Services Early Childhood Training and Development Center. The design and construction is on course for early 2015 completion and opening. This new facility will allow the organization to expand its services and programs. It will also help Imua provide specialized services to Maui’s children with special needs with a new state-of-the-art facility complete with innovative therapy rooms, designated areas for family counseling and activities, an inclusion preschool facility, education and training center, offices spaces for more than 45 staff members and an outdoor covered playground. Dutch inventors Bart Jansen and Arjen Beltman struck again recently when Pepeijn Bruins, 13, called on them to help him grieve over his pet rat, Ratjetoe, who had to be put down because of cancer. Having heard of the inventors’ work, Pepeijn asked if they could please have Ratjetoe stuffed and turned into a radio-controlled drone. Jansen and Beltman, who had previously created an “ostrichcopter” and are now working on a “turbo shark,” created Pepeijn’s rat-copter, but remain best noted for their epic taxidermied cat, “Orvillecopter,” created in 2012.

HOW TO CONFUSE AN ARIZONAN In August, a state appeals court overruled a lower court and decided that Thomas and Nancy Beatie could divorce, after all. The first judge had determined that their outof-state marriage was not valid in Arizona because they were both women, but Thomas has had extensive surgery and hormone therapy and become a man–although he is also the spouse who bore the couple’s three children, since he made it a point to retain his reproductive organs.

BOOB AID 2014 In August, for the 12th straight year, a group of Japanese adult-film actresses has volunteered their breasts to raise money for an AIDS-prevention charity event shown on an X-rated cable TV channel from Tokyo. The 12-hour-long “squeezea-thon” (“Boob Aid”) sold individual fondles to men for donations of at least (the equivalent of) $9, with donors required first to spray on disinfectant. In all, 4,100 pairs of hands roamed the nine actresses.

Regulatory filings revealed in August that AOL still has 2.3 million dial-up subscribers (down from 21 million 15 years ago) paying, on average, about $20 monthly. Industry analysts, far from rolling on the floor laughing at the company’s continued success with 20th-century technology, estimate that AOL’s dial-up business constitutes a hefty portion of its quarterly “operating profit” of about $122 million.

AOL IS STILL A THING?

In June, Robert Pullar, 30, Minot, North Dakota, subsequently charged with DUI, fell out of his car and was run over by it. In July, Joseph Karl, 48, jumped out of his truck to confront another driver in a road rage incident in Gainesville, Florida, but as he pounded on that driver’s window, his own truck (negligently left in gear) crept up and ran him over. Pullar and Karl were not seriously injured, but in July, a 54-year-old St. Petersburg, Florida, man was hurt badly when, attempting to climb

onto the street sweeper that he operates for the city, he fell off, and the machine ran over his upper body.

BRAIN SURGERY PLAYLIST? For patients who are musicians, deep brain stimulation (open-brain) surgery can provide entertainment for operatingroom doctors as they correct neurological conditions such as hand tremors. In September, the concert violinist Naomi Elishuv, who has performed with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, played for surgeons at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center so they could locate the exact spot in the brain for inserting the pacemaker to control the hand-trembling that had wrecked her career. In fact, last week’s winner of the annual Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, Eddie Adcock, 76, had finger-picked some tunes in the operating room in 2007 for his own deep brain surgery.

GUESS IT WAS A TUMOR AFTER ALL Surgeons at the University of Arizona Medical Center removed a 47-pound tumor from a woman’s stomach in April–not even close to being the largest ever mentioned in News of the Weird, but likely the only such large tumor appearing in a post-operative photograph being cradled in the arms of a member of the surgical team. The patient, without insurance, had been putting off the surgery for months, which allowed the tumor to grow and to complicate the surgery–but credits “Obamacare” with finally allowing her to afford the procedure.

CRAZY PHONE BILL Previous reports of obsessively vengeful ex-lovers seem concentrated in Japan, where some heartbroken girlfriends have relentlessly harassed their exes with thousands of phone calls for months after the breakup. But in a September report from Rhone, France, a 33-year-old man was sentenced to prison for 10 months for harassing his ex-girlfriend with a total of 21,807 phone calls and texts over the 10 months following the split (an average of 73 a day). The man insisted that he only wanted the woman to thank him for the carpentry work he had done on her apartment.

SIZE MATTERS (SOMETIMES) It’s not the first time that a suspect has had the idea, but usually, judges are skeptical. This time, a court in Leer, Germany, ordered a medical examination of the manhood of Herbert O., 54, to help decide a criminal charge of exhibitionism. The man’s wife testified that Herbert’s organ is “too short to hang out of [his] trousers,” as claimed by the victim of the flashing. The judge asked a local health official to make an exact measurement. ■

e d i r P Talking story with

Frenchie Davis, who’s headlining this year’s

Maui Pride Festival By Jen Russo Frenchie Davis was on American Idol in 2003, but it seemed that her performing career jumped on the fast track after she left the show. Sure, the Howard University theater student had been disqualified from Idol due to a few spicy photos, but she recovered quickly by getting a role in Broadway’s Rent later that year. After Rent, she did a West Coast tour as Effie White in Dreamgirls and won a Grammy nomination for the Ain’t Misbehavin musical tour in 2008 (she performed with fellow Idol contestant and Season Two winner Ruben Studdard). In 2011, she returned to television, finishing fifth on the first season of The Voice after being on Christina Aguilera’s team. The next year, she made public that she was in a relationship with a woman. In 2012 she also won Best Dance / Electronica at the OUT Music Awards in Vegas for her release “Love’s Got A Hold On Me,” which went to the 12th slot on the Billboard dance chart. Best of all, this Saturday, we get to hear Davis’ mezzo soprano voice live at the Maui Pride Festival. We managed to catch up with her and learn her advice for the Idol stage, what she wants to do to Jack Black and the role underwear plays in her future.

Q:

From Broadway’s Rent to playing Effie White in the Dreamgirls, what was the most indelible thing about being on stage?

I think being on Broadway was probably the most memorable. New York was such an exciting city then. Being on that stage every night was such an incredible feeling and the thing I am most thankful for is the lifelong friendships I built there. I think the tenth anniversary performance of Rent was my most unforgettable night on Broadway–sharing the stage with the original cast. Sharing the season’s solo with Gwen Stewart–the original Seasons Of Love diva!–and then Daphne Ruben Vega (the original Mimi) slayed that night. It was an incredible night.

You’ve been on American Idol and The Voice. What’s your advice for the next contestant?

Don’t take it too seriously. Bear in mind A: that these shows are career builders for the judges/coaches and not necessarily the contestants. So don’t take it too seriously. Have fun and sing your heart out!

Where Your Festival Money Goes The Maui Pride organization celebrates diversity and the positive aspects of the LGBTQ community. Their main event is the annual Maui Pride Festival, but their activities extend the whole year through with support for individuals, community and the organizations that share those goals. The establishment of their scholarship fund is to support secondary education for deserving recipients in this community. The recipients of the scholarships are selected from applicants that are either LGBTQ members themselves or children of LGBTQ parents. They also must live in Hawaii for a minimum of a year prior to applying. The candidates apply through a strict process of communicating their past experience with the LGBTQ community and what future impact they foresee. Maui Pride also puts on the Lava Soiree during the year to raise funds for their scholarship fund. This year, they raised $15,000 and will be awarding $14,000 of those funds. On Oct. 3, the Governor’s office will also fly the rainbow flag in recognition of Maui Pride. The Pride organizers a`re really excited, as they’ve previously tried “really hard to get Maui County to fly a flag, but with no luck.” Organizers will announce the five winners of their 2014 scholarships during Friday’s VIP reception. For tickets to this event and others like the Frenchie Davis show, go to Mauipride.org/maui-pride-weekend

Maui Pride Festival Schedule Thursday, Oct. 2 • 6pm: Maui Pride Film Festival; $5, Iao Theatre (68 N. Market St., Wailuku) The first showing is a short called Prinsesa. It’s about a young Filipino-American father who tells the Singkil folk dance tale to his children to calm them after an earthquake. But his young boy seems to identify more as the princess in the myth than the prince. This creates an awkward moment for the dad. The second full feature film is Fagbug Nation. It takes you behind the wheel of the once vandalized but now famous Fagbug. With six years of touring under her belt, director Erin Davies (Fagbug, 2009) has her mind set on getting her car to all 50 states, including Hawaii and Alaska. To pull this off, Erin went 54 days without a car, put her car on five boats and flew on 14 planes. The Fagbug got lei’d right here on Maui and drives through the midnight sun to Alaska, but first makes a pit stop at the Equality House in Topeka, Kansas. The film includes a tribute to Raja Shortell. Davies will also be on hand for a Q&A session. Friday, Oct. 3 • 5:30pm: Maui Pride VIP Reception; Maui Sunseeker Resort, Kihei Join Maui Pride with pupus from Sunkissed Maui Events, Mai Tai Bar and goodie bags. There will be an award ceremony to honor community members and the Maui Pride scholarship winners. Simply Sweets Bakery 1910 Vineyard St., Wailuku 808-269-2113 Enjoygram.com/simply_sweets_bakery

T

he doors to the “Home of the Mauisadas” are open again. Simply Sweets Bakery has resurfaced at Hart’s Corner in Wailuku after going underground for the last eight years. MauiTime last caught up with Baker Jeff Cabiles in 2005 when Simply Sweets Bakery was located next to 24 Hour Fitness on Hana Highway, but his first shop opened on Mill Street in 1997. The newest home of the Mauisada is a window-order bakery, once occupied by Dad’s Donuts and Cafe Central, but it has parking, a small table and bench, which is all just fine for consuming their sweet bits of pastry with coffee. The lusty reunion with Cabiles’ yeasty puffs of fried dough that are dusted with the crunchy grit of baker’s sugar was made even sweeter by the extra malasadas they threw in for being long lost loves. The plain Mauisadas are $5 for a half-dozen and $10 for a dozen, and they still offer

them cream-filled too–vanilla, chocolate and haupia are $2 each. Simply Sweets also has incredible cream puffs, custard danishes, cream horns and blueberry scones. Cabiles also masterminded a specialty item called the Ulupalakua Taco: for $4, you get a chocolate almond florentine cookie shaped like a taco that’s filled with pastry cream and strawberries. He says it was inspired by almond roca. He also does a “Brok da Mout” pastry–a cream puff topped with chantilly. From time to time, Cabiles also brings back the savory ham and cheese buns, pasteles on Thursdays and they love to do pies and brownie orders, too. Just give them a day or two advance notice for special orders. Pay attention to their Instagram account(@Simply_Sweets_Bakery): it’ll tell you what’s on special that week. The bakery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 7am -3pm and is closed on Sunday and Monday. It’s located on the corner of Vineyard Street and Central Avenue in Wailuku. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

M

aui Zing just opened up a few days ago in the Main Street Promenade, the modest food court along Main Street that services Wailuku businesses, visitors and residences. The restaurant has a hearty breakfast and lunch menu and is open from 7am to 5:30pm. Jamie Birren and her husband Joe opened Zing with her mom Lily Barnett. It’s Jamie and Joe’s first time at a restaurant, but Barnett previously owned one in Wyoming. The name comes from Chef Joe’s mouth, as in he likes to put a little “zing” in his dishes. And Jamie added, it means “love” like in the movie Hotel Transylvania, where they have that special “zing.” It does have a certain zing to it. The recipes on the menu are a combo of Joe’s and Lily’s family style favorites. At breakfast, their Swedish Pancakes ($6) are described as thin cakes filled with fruity cream sauce and powdered sugar. Jamie says they’re stupendous, and they made me a sample. While I was waiting she got out their vat of lilikoi butter that her mom Lily makes and gave me a spoonful. She says they will make it until lilikois are out of season. They serve it on pastries du jour. The breakfast menu is the most extensive I’ve yet seen at the promenade: egg sandwiches, eggs and potatoes, Eggs Benedict, biscuits and gravy, loco moco and burritos.

But I digress. The Swedish Pancake is a European treat–a thin pancake, not a crepe, formed into a jelly roll with fruity cream and topped with a dollop of fresh whipped cream and a few raspberries. It was great, but I ordered the Huevos Rancheros that Barnett makes with her own special Lily’s green chili sauce. It’s more American than Mexican, with kidney beans and black beans in a deep fried tortilla bowl, green sauce, eggs made to order (I got scrambled), cheese, salsa, sour cream and guacamole, but it works marvelously because of Lily’s sauce. For lunch, I tried their chicken salad sandwich on croissant ($9). They have a full list of sandwiches from BLT to Reuben to burgers, all made to order with your choice of breads, tortillas and cheeses running from $9 to $12. In the chicken salad, real chunks of roasted and chilled chicken met onions, celery, pine nuts and grapes, along with Kula Dave tomato slices and green leaf lettuce. It was really good. The turkey bacon avo features their own oven roasted garlic and black pepper turkey on ciabatta with garlic aioli, and is also spectacular for $10. I was surprised to see the menu also included jalapeno poppers with ranch, beerbattered zucchini sticks, onion rings, fresh cut fries, hand cut chips and fried artichoke hearts. I’m thinking BYOB pau hanas might be in order with their deep fried selections to put the bar in the bar food. They also have a complete selection of salads, a burrito, chimichanga, smoothies, milkshakes, lemonade and soft drinks. ■

have to admit I did not know that Fijian Indian cuisine was a thing. So I was intrigued when I came across Jini’s Fiji-Indian Food at the Main Street Promenade in Wailuku. Sarojini (Jini) Harris, the owner and chef, is a born and raised Fijian Indian and doesn’t shy away from talking about her unique heritage. “The Indians came in the 1800s,” she told me. “Brought in to work on the sugar plantations. So now we have two and three generations of Indian people on Fiji. Fijian Indian food is a little different than what people normally think of Indian. What we do is more like homestyle cooking, the dishes you would make at home with your family.” One of the first thing Harris points out that’s different is that she doesn’t do naan, but you won’t miss it because her fresh made roti bread is just as good. It’s like a flour tortilla-style unleavened bread, and Harris suggests using it as a wrap for your curry, rice and veggies, but I choose to dip

mine in the sauces. She makes everything herself, and she can guide you even if you’re not familiar with the dishes or their flavors. Curry plates come with rice, roti, salad and chutney and start at $8 for one choice and run to $12 for three. The plates are generous. I started with the eggplant curry and the lamb curry, and both were amazing. The lamb is rich and perfectly seasoned and prepared, truly a treat for an everyday lunch. Harris opened Jini’s Curry a year ago as a new chapter in life. She was raised in Fiji, but lived in Oregon for some time with her late husband. Now she and her son live on Maui, and she says the weather is similar to Fiji–“it’s like summer all year round there, too.” She loves sharing her Indian Food tradition, and often changes up the curries on her menu. You will find fish, shrimp, chicken, eggplant, potato and lamb. She also makes daal, a lentil soup that’s the lighter dish on the menu, and vegan samosas. You will find her staffing her curry booth at the Makawao and Kihei town parties, too, and she stays open on Saturday for Fijian curry fixes. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

T

om Conway first started playing the guitar when he was a kid. It was a phase his parents hoped would pass, but it didn’t. Now he’s an experienced musician–so experienced, in fact, that he’s worked with Willie Nelson (he even went on tour with him). He frequently gigs around Maui, but took a little time to answer some questions for us.

Q: A: Q: A:

Why did you make music into a career?

Q: A: Q: A:

What did your parents think when you first decided to become a musician?

I got into music, which, of course, led to the entertainment business. I love being on stage and performing live. How did you get your start?

I started playing guitar at nine years old after my mom got me a Jimi Hendrix album. I just loved music ever since I can remember.

They hoped it would just be a passing fancy. “We’ll get Tommy a guitar but I’m sure he’ll get over it soon…” Do you work with other bands or are you on your own?

I perform mostly solo but I’ve been in many bands over the years, starting with my first rock band in fifth grade. I did some touring with Willie Nelson and his band this past year and that was a real honor for me.

Q: A:

What kind of music do you play?

I play a very wide repertoire that includes blues, rock, pop, Jazz, Reggae and country. At my solo gigs I might go from Hendrix to Sinatra to Django to AC/DC to Willie Nelson!

Q: A:

What are some of your favorite songs to perform?

Q: A:

Did you learn how to play from a teacher or did you teach yourself?

Q: A:

Where do you play?

I like all the songs and styles I play in my solo set but I’ll always make sure to play a couple tunes by Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. They sound beautiful on acoustic guitar and are fun to play!

Both. Early on, I had a few lessons but I was mostly learning from records by ear. When I was 25, I moved from Maui to Los Angeles to study with some of the best players in the world and they really helped me to grow, which I still strive to do. Jorge Strunz, Ted Greene, Lenny Breau and Scott Henderson had a big impact on me.

My regular gigs are every Monday and Friday at Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea 4-6pm and every Saturday at the Southshore Tiki Lounge in Kihei 4-6pm. Also, this Friday, Oct. 3, I'm playing at the MACC at 7pm with Lily Meola. My calendar is on my website (Tomconwayguitar.com). ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E news, visit MauiTime’s events blog at: mauivents.com

Fun With Vigilantes ‘The Equalizer’ was better as a 1980s TV show ★★★★★ Rated R/ 131 Min.

I

t was hard to miss The Equalizer when it first began airing on TV in the 1980s. The opening, set to a propulsive theme by Stewart Copeland, presented a montage of dread-inducing scenarios, mostly involving women being stalked and terrorized. After nearly a minute of dark figures cornering ladies on subways and dark alley ways, along came the headlights of a sleek car. Out pops McCall, a trench coat wearing man, holding a gun, ready to take down urban scum: The Equalizer! As embodied by the wonderful, middle-aged Edward Woodward, the show was (for its time) a violent, edgy statement on then-rising crime rates and vigilantism in New York. Now, we have the film adaptation that keeps the title and character name of McCall but nothing else. Most of the original concepts and the moral questions on vigilante violence are gone. The TV series seemed like a televised expansion of the controversial Death Wish and a commentary on the 1984 “subway shooter” Bernie Goetz. By contrast, this movie dials down the provocative ques-

tions raised by the material, tosses out the pivotal killer-for-hire father/disapproving son angle and makes the anti-hero glitter in water-drenched slow motion, while dispatching a bad guy with a nail gun. The Antoine Fuqua directed remake is closer to a Liam Neeson revenge thriller, in which an acclaimed actor is reinvented as a gun-toting killer. That Denzel Washington is playing McCall is what makes this so compelling. McCall works at Home Mart (Home Depot apparently disapproved of their name being used in such a gory movie). He’s awfully nice, caring for his co-workers and, off hours, is quiet, alone and mysterious. His nightly conversations in a diner with a prostitute (Chloe Grace Moretz), in which he witnesses the abuse she takes, stirs his previously unseen violent side. Taking vengeance on her pimp is just the beginning, as a slew of villains strike back at McCall, who, by what we see here, could kill them all with one hand tied behind his back. Washington is a famous advocate of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, a quality that comes up in his characterization. McCall is the kind of role model who actively helps those in need and wants the best from everybody. On the other hand, he’s also an ice-cold killer.

This is what happens when Liam Neeson is unavailable

Playing the kind of role usually reserved for Jason Statham, Washington makes the contradictions in McCall intriguing, as he clearly means well but displays an OCDlike behavior and might be deranged. Fuqua’s enthralling Olympus Has Fallen is a superior example of good trash and he and Washington are nowhere near their extraordinary collaboration on Training Day. Washington’s The Book of Eli is a much better heroic action vehicle. Still, even though this gets remarkably ugly and ridiculous in the last half, Fuqua makes some good choices. McCall’s confrontation with an evil Russian gangster (Martin Czokas, providing maximum villainy) in a fancy restaurant is a great scene. So is McCall’s infiltrating an

illegal operation, a seen-it-before bit with a hilarious cutaway shot, marked with the line, “Mr. Pushkin thanks you.” The hooker-with-heart-of-gold subplot is wisely tossed aside at the midpoint, as Moretz strains and fails to match Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver. There’s grit but little in the way of social commentary or depth. Literally, this is the kind of movie that opens with a Mark Twain quote and ends with Eminem on the soundtrack. This is crowd pleasing and too commercial to be controversial. But we should be wondering how, on the same day, a shining example of the Boys and Girls Club could help a friend get a job and stick a corkscrew in an attacker’s throat. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

I’m too bored to write you a proper horoscope this week. You’re just too damn normal. Your scales are so in synch that there’s nothing for people to latch onto. Where are the extremes, the flaws, the fascinating neuroses and idiosyncrasies? You know what I’m getting at, don’t you? You and I both know that you’re not perfect, despite the faultless veneer you’ve managed to throw up between the real you and the world. Guess what? It’s intimidating and off-putting rather than interesting and attractive, as you’d hoped. Show off your humanity this week, Libra. It’s your sexiest part. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Take up ballroom dancing, perhaps, or canoeing, or karaoke duets. Anything that requires that you fall into synch with another person would be quite a good exercise for you. You get too rigidly attached to your own way of doing things; strict adherence to a self-designed schedule, routine, or method means you get a lot done but don’t give yourself many openings for something new to enter. I’m not even talking about something that will make you more efficient. Life isn’t always about getting something done in the simplest, quickest way. It can also be about having fun. Make that this week’s prime objective. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

I love the sound of breaking glass. I confess that I sometimes take too little care when washing up after a meal in hopes that a glass might slip and break. Still, I’m too poor to deliberately go around breaking my stuff, just for the split-second aural thrill. It’s really a bad habit of mine, and of yours—you take too many risks with things you can’t afford to replace. Even though breaking or losing them might feel exciting, the consequences would be far less pleasant. At least for this week, take pains to preserve what you have. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

This week you’re a gorgon; you can turn people to stone with a glance. Venomous words and actions would be overkill when just a look can be almost lethal. The problem: being so damn powerful is quite daunting to all but the bravest, stupidest, or most foolhardy folk. What to do? Tone down your extreme nature? Hell no. Instead, encourage fascinating folk to approach with this calm assurance: “Yes, I’m poison, but I’m the antidote, too. When you recover from me, you’ll be stronger than you ever were.” AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

My ex-boyfriend has a thousand comic voices and a brain that stores and recalls funny moments, songs, and movie quotes with skillful, appropriate, and delightful ease. His bridge between memory and the present moment is a wide avenue along which many vehicles pass simultaneously. Your memory, conversely, lies across a narrow rope bridge. In other words, most people have some idea that an immense kingdom of diverse recollections exists over there, but they’ve only rarely heard specifics. Your story-treasures languish, unspent. Sadly, these are riches that evaporate when you don’t often use them. Being present is good; informing the moment with your vast and fascinating past is better. Expand that rope bridge so it’s wide enough to accommodate a herd of elephants, then march them across.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

I confess I’m not particularly fond of most of the people who are drawn to serve in the armed forces, or become police officers. While there are those noble few who do it for admirable, idealistic reasons, too many do it because they’re arrogant, hierarchicallyminded assholes who like having authority and wielding power over other people—many like it so much that they abuse it. Aries are as susceptible to this trap as any other sign, but those who escape it, and opt for power-with rather than power-over scenarios, are put in a sweet position; Many people think they can only choose between being oppressor and oppressed. You clearly have a third choice: champion for the underdog. Don that mantle this week, if possible.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Money is a screwed up thing. Its acquisition is a game you understand quite early in life; so much so that you often rope yourself into choices that make you wealthy in funds but impoverished in some aspects of human existence that convey true richness apart from the depth of your credit: love in all forms, intimacy, inspired human connection. There’s hope for you, though; being so responsible and ambitious has caused you to cultivate many personal qualities that people find attractive and desirable. What’s left is to apply them in a new direction. Try that this week.

WEDNESDAYS & FRIDAYS 7:30AM

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Sorry, I have to kick your ass on occasion; whenever I see you beating yourself up, I try to beat you to the punch, quite literally. In other words, when you’re so busy defending yourself from me, you forget all the shit you were going to inflict on your poor tender ego. Consequently, you end up better off than you would have if I’d just left you alone. You’re always much crueler to yourself than anyone could ever be to you. Try to think of it this way when someone causes you pain this week: they’re actually sparing you the misery of the far more effective self-torture you might visit upon yourself, otherwise. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

You know you’ve got a problem when it’s barely midOctober and you’re already doing the deep winter hibernation thing. Resist your hermetic tendencies by forcing yourself to go out at least three times this week. Try to have fun, but even if you’re having a sullen, lousy time, keep yourself from retreating to the solitude of your apartment. If you did that, I predict you’d be pretty much lost to the world, at least until springtime. Since there are important bits planned for you before then, I’d rather you got to experience them. Pick up the phone and get dressed. It’s time to go out.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Screw the spotlight. That’s your attitude this week. You’re sick of the relentless glow of all that attention. Sadly, your best efforts to reflect and deflect it only serves to attract more notice. You can’t fly under the radar, especially looking like that. Instead you’ve got to absorb every last photon of the glare, so there’s nothing left to report your whereabouts to onlookers. In other words, when unwanted attention comes your way this week, don’t reject it. Instead, quietly and persistently soak it up. This kind of behavior is mostly boring, and will serve to relieve you of the burden of all that popularity almost instantly.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You fanatically avoid competition; this is one reason you’re deeply reluctant to market yourself or venture into any kind of fast-paced or high-stakes business venture. Life for you is about many interesting things, but comparing people or their works and deciding which is “better” just seems lame and unimaginative. However, most of us aren’t that enlightened. Don’t spurn us because we’re not as spiritually experienced as you are, or you’ll be guilty of the kind of comparison/competition game you’re disdaining, and be slung back, in short order, to the beginning of the zodiac, for yet another spin around the wheel.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Good. You’re surprising me, and many of those around you. The new facets of your personality that you’re unveiling are hot shit. I have to confess that some of us had begun to find you more or less predictable over the past year. Now you’re shocking the shit out of us. Don’t worry, we’re pleased, not upset; it’s one of those win-win type scenarios. Why does it feel so absolutely right? Because even though what you’re up to seems totally “out of character,” it also suits you perfectly. Keep it up. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com.
