WAILUKU TOWN I read the article Wailuku Town, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly twice (Nov. 6, 2014). Susan Halas types a “partial list” of business she seems to think are noteworthy. I believe she omitted a well established, convenient and popular business that deserved mention! Business ETC., located at 2020 Main Street is owned and operated by Theresa Cook. BE provides copy services, private mailboxes, postage, notary, fingerprinting, DNA testing and access to the Internet to reference a few. All of these services are given with friendly, and knowledgeable efficiency. -Mary C. Saunders, via email
NPR HATER HATE MAIL We like NPR and Garrison Keeler ( I’m Norwegian) or programs such as Science Friday, Moth Radio Hour, Wait-wait don’t tell me, car talk, morning and evening News Edition and even Mr. [Michael] Titterton (Feedback, Nov. 6, 2014). Life is too short and if you don’t like Garrison Keeler go out, make new friends and find something real to complain about such as potholes, deteriorating sidewalks, traffic or Republicans! Try to, as they sang in Monty Python’s Life of Brian, “Always Look on the Sunny side of Life.” You’ll be happy you did. -Lance Holter, via email
STILL HATES US OVER GMOS I kept passing up your newsstand in revolt of your stance on GMOs (General Election Candidate Endorsements, Oct. 30, 2014). My curiosity got the best of me however, thinking maybe you softened your stance. But no! You are still idiots! Siding with Monsanto’s “junk (USDA/FDA paid for) nonscience.” Bye! -Anonymous, via hand-scrawled copy of MauiTime

UH RESEARCHERS SAY OCEAN WARMING A THING AGAIN Some day, reporters like me will be able to write about the latest (usually bad) research into climate change without having to mention that some of the most powerful officials in the U.S. government believe the whole scientific effort is hogwash. But that day is not today. On Nov. 12, President Barack Obama announced a sweeping carbon emissions limitation accord with China. U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii–one of the staunchest environmentalists in the Senate–immediately called it “historic.” But U.S. Senator James Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, who will most likely run the Environmental and Public Works Committee when the Republicans take over the U.S. Senate in January, gave the accord the back of his hand. “The American people spoke against the President’s climate policies in this last election,” Inhofe told The Washington Post. “As we enter a new Congress, I will do everything in my power to rein in and shed light on the EPA’s unchecked regulations.” And what a lovely effort that will be–especially considering that new research just released by UH Manoa indicates that the warming of our oceans is worse than ever before. “This summer has seen the highest global mean sea surface temperatures ever recorded since their systematic measuring started,” states a Nov. 14 UH news release. “Temperatures even exceeded those of the record-breaking 1998 El Nino year, according to the analysis of recent climate data by Axel Timmermann, climate scientist and professor, studying variability of the global climate system at the International Pacific Research Center at UH Manoa.” According to UH, global ocean temperatures actually stopped rising from 2000-2013. But in April of this year, that hiatus apparently ended, and temperatures began rising again. “The 2014 global ocean warming is mostly due to the North Pacific, which has warmed far beyond any recorded value and has shifted hurricane tracks, weakened trade winds, and produced coral bleaching in the Hawaiian Islands,” Timmerman says in the news release. “Record-breaking greenhouse gas concentrations and anomalously weak
North Pacific summer trade winds, which usually cool the ocean surface, have contributed further to the rise in sea surface temperatures. The warm temperatures now extend in a wide swath from just north of Papua New Guinea to the Gulf of Alaska.” The earth, as you’d expect, has plans that transcend the 2014 midterm elections.
GMO INITIATIVE LAWSUITS FOREVER Wasn’t the campaign over the Maui County GMO Initiative fun? You know what’s gonna be even more fun? The lawsuits! With this much money and power involved, they’ll probably last for the rest of the decade at least. The measure, which was supposed to become law when the state Elections Office gets around to certifying the 2014 Election results, places a two-year “moratorium” on the growing of genetically engineered crops in Maui County while growers pay for studies on GMO health and safety. Voters narrowly approved it, 50.2 percent to 47.9 percent. Usually, the people who win these elections (like the pro-GMO Initiative crew) bask in the glory of their victory and wait for the losing side (Monsanto, et al) to file suit to get the law overturned. But instead of waiting for Monsanto or whoever to sue to overturn the initiative, the SHAKA Movement and other pro-initiative individuals decided to just go ahead and sue the County of Maui (which is legally bound to defend the initiative in court against legal challenges) in Second Circuit Court in Wailuku.
“Maui County residents Dr. Lorrin Pang, Mark Sheehan, Lei‘ohu Ryder, Bonnie Marsh and Alika Atay have filed a lawsuit against the county, Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences seeking more influence on how the law is implemented and aiming to resolve the issue of whether the law is enforceable,” Honolulu Civil Beat reported on Nov. 12, the day plaintiffs filed the suit. “The organization behind the moratorium, called the SHAKA Movement, is also a plaintiff in the case.” Basically, SHAKA Movement wants to make sure the County of Maui takes it seriously when it enacts the Initiative and defends it in court. The lawsuit makes this perfectly clear. “Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa and the County have made public statements stating that the County is finalizing how much manpower, equipment, and other resources will be needed to implement the GMO Bill,” states SHAKA’s lawsuit. “The details of the measures that the County intends to implement have not yet been reported, and the County has not contacted Plaintiffs to include them in the process despite Plaintiff’s heavy involvement in the enactment of the GMO Bill.” Monsanto and more than a half dozen other entities finally filed their legal challenge to the Initiative on Thursday, Nov. 13, in U.S. District Court in Honolulu. That lawsuit, which was also filed against the County of Maui, seeks to have the measure overturned. “The Ordinance violates federal, state and local law, and is predicated on purported ‘findings’ that are directly at odds with decades of settled science and more than one hundred federal agency expert scientific determinations,” states Monsanto’s suit. The lawsuit argues that only the state– not counties–can legally regulate ag issues. It also states the initiative violates county law by “appropriating money despite an explicit limitation on using the initiative power for that purpose, providing penalties far beyond what the Charter allows, imposing improper constraints on the County Council, supplanting the executive power of the Mayor,

and assessing an invalid, multimillion dollar tax on agricultural interests.” The very next day, Nov. 14, federal Judge Barry Kurren granted a temporary injunction against the Initiative until he can rule on its legality. All this litigation is a windfall for Honolulu and Washington, DC law firms. The Nov. 13 lawsuit, filed on behalf of eight entities–including Monsanto and Agrigenetics (dba Mycogen Seeds)–lists 10 attorneys from three firms for the plaintiffs. One of the firms, Washington, DC-based Latham & Watkins, is one of the largest and most powerful law firms in the world, employing 2,000 attorneys on three continents. That firm brings in about $2 billion in revenue a year. By contrast, the lawsuit filed by the
Attorneys love the GMO Initiative!
SHAKA Movement and five individuals (also against the County of Maui as well as Monsanto and Dow) that apparently seeks to make sure SHAKA has significant say in the County’s legal defense of the initiative listed but two attorneys from the Honolulu law firm Bays Lung Rose & Holma. According to that firm’s website, Bays et al typically handles real estate law. But this is why we’ve polarized the county, right? Got everyone so worked up and scared that many of them actually went out and voted? It’s all so we could tie up the issue in the courts through suits, counter-suits and appeals, guaranteeing that the big firms get billable hours for the rest of the decade (and journalists like me get to write about the ensuing carnage). Given the fact that the County of Maui is a defendant in both the above lawsuits,* we can only hope that taxpayers–who ultimately get the privilege of paying for all this–at least get an interesting fight to watch.
*Editorial disclosure: MauiTime Owner/ Publisher Tommy Russo is currently suing the County of Maui over a 2011 incident involving the Maui Police Department. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our website at: mauitimecom

MPD ESCALATES HOLIDAY TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT Bet you didn’t see this one coming: the Maui Police Department will boost their traffic enforcement during the last two weeks of November. ” Officers will be on the lookout for those who are speeding, not wearing seatbelts, and using Mobile Electronic Devices while driving,” said Sergeant William
Hankins of the Maui PD’s Traffic Section in a Nov. 12 MPD press release. “Officers will also be looking out for motorists who fail to adhere to traffic signs and signals (red light violators). In addition, to the stepped up holiday enforcement the public can also expect an increase in roving DUI patrols throughout the remainder of the year and into 2015.” Nothing says holiday joy like a speeding ticket. Then again, Thanksgiving is statistically the most dangerous American holiday. “Traditionally, national statistics for fatal motor vehicle crashes increases during the holiday week of Thanksgiving,” said Hankins in the news release. “The Maui Police Department is asking everyone to please drive with care and help in making the roadways safe during the holiday season.” -Anthony Pignataro

It will house a main television studio; an emergency broadcast enter; and a Media Innovation Center for young journalists in the station’s flagship statewide student news initiative, HIKI NO. “This will be a 21st-century building for a 21st-century Hawaii,” said Leslie Wilcox, PBS Hawaii President and CEO. “Our team has spent a great deal of time on the technology design… which will further help us create, communicate and collaborate.” HIKI NO graduates Shisa Kahaunaele and Victoria Cuba, both now college students, were in attendance for the groundbreaking ceremony. Kahaunaele and Cuba both say their lives have dramatically changed because of the community’s investment in HIKI NO, which promotes modern workforce and life skills. “This [will be] a new home, a permanent home for PBS Hawaii to nurture more young people like myself,” Kahaunaele said. Imua Family Services recently announced the opening of its newest early childhood program, Imua Preschool. The forward thinking program will be housed in Imua’s new Early Childhood Center on Wakea Avenue in Kahului. Construction of the new center is scheduled to be completed early next year. The initial preschool enrollment will host 24 children for the school year beginning August 2015. The forward thinking program was born into reality when Imua Family Services began planning its new Early Childhood Center. The concept was to create a state-of-the-art inclusion preschool that could accommodate both typically developing children and children with developmental concerns and special needs in the same classroom, a new paradigm called “inclusion.” Inclusive programs honor similarities as well as children’s different abilities and cultures. In inclusive classrooms, children with special needs take part in the curriculum based on their ages and grades. They are not segregated into separate classrooms, but rather the curriculum and the room are adapted to meet the needs of all of the children. “Our long term goal is to create something that is so profound, so transformative and inspirational that it becomes a model that we can replicate all across Maui,” said Dean Wong, Imua’s Executive Director. “Imua Preschool will become a training and development center for children, parents, and teachers island wide.” The inception of Imua Preschool has been more than three years in the making.
The plans for the preschool were built into the design of the new Early Childhood Center, where the preschool will have access to Imua’s large staff of early childhood professionals, including Speech Language Pathologists, Physical and Occupational Therapists, Special and General Education Teachers and Early Childhood Educators. “A substantial body of research establishes that preschool education can improve the learning and development of young children,” said Dr. Bobbie-Jo Moniz Tadeo, Program Director and Early Childhood Specialist at Imua Family Services. “Many studies have investigated the immediate effects of preschool education for children during their first five years of life. Early experiences in the home and other settings such as preschool help to shape the development and quality of the brain’s architecture. Thus in later years, it suggests skills learned in early childhood help to build on future skills needed in adulthood. Therefore investment in early learning and development is more efficient in both the development and costs factors relative later in the life cycle.” Because of the immediate need for preschool on Maui, Imua Family Services has entered into collaboration with the University of Hawaii Maui College to open a “Preschool Pilot Program” in January 2015 in Central Maui. The pilot program will admit 16 children with a percentage of spaces available to UH Maui College students with preschool aged children. It will also provide three internship opportunities to the university’s Early Childhood Education program to assist the teaching staff. Limited spaces are available now for the January 2015 preschool pilot program. Enrollment packages for the August 2015 school year are also available. THE OTHER WORLD SERIES NEW MATH In October, another premier world sports event reached its climax, with one team left standing, rewarded for months of grueling practices, to the cheers of adoring, frenzied fans. The “world series” of professional team computer games was settled on a stage in a packed, 40,000-seat stadium in Seoul before three gigantic TV screens and an Internet audience of millions. The powerhouse Samsung White team out-moused and -keyboarded the Chinese champions at “League of Legends” (which 27 million gamers worldwide play every day), using its fantasy characters to destroy opponents’ bases. The winning team took home $1 million of corporate money, but future earnings should escalate when idolized world-class players unionize and swing merchandising endorsement deals.

Carnell Alexander at one point owed about $60,000 in child support for a kid he did not father (according to a DNA test) and knew nothing about, but despite “successfully” challenging the claim 20 years ago, he still owes about $30,000. The mother who accused him long ago admitted lying (in that naming a “father” was necessary to get welfare benefits), and while a judge thus wiped out Alexander’s debt to her, the state of Michigan nonetheless still demands that Alexander repay benefits it had paid to the mother.
PUBIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT America’s largest pornography website, PornHub.com, decided recently to erect a public billboard prominently encouraging the use of its service, first selecting as its location the New York City neighborhood formerly the smut epicenter of the city, Times Square. But that area is now respectably tourist-friendly, and the billboard had to be relocated–to Los Angeles’ West Hollywood, near the headquarters of PornHub’s parent, MindGeek. The sign features a person’s two thumbs and fingers forming a rough version of a heart, beside the message (inspired by a Beatles song), “All You Need Is Hand.”

Literature professor Thomas Docherty was back at work in October following his ninemonth suspension from the University of Warwick for “inappropriate sighing” during meetings with a senior colleague, along with “making ironic comments” and “negative body language.” And in October, Andrew Davies, 51, was ordered by magistrates in High Wycombe, England, not to lie down in public places anymore (unless genuinely stricken by emergency). Previously, he had a habit of making bogus “999” (911) calls to get attention, and when police confiscated his phone, he began compensating by lying in roads until compassionate passersby called for ambulances.
More than six million students have downloaded the new iPhone app PhotoMath to solve Algebra I and Algebra II problems by pointing the phone’s camera at a printed equation. The answer, and the explanation, quickly appear on a screen, as a teaching tool–or for the students to show “their” work if PhotoMath is used on exam questions. The Croatia-based developer told the Quartz website in October that it is working on upgrades for higher-level math equations (though no relief is in sight for those chronically pesky “word problems”). Meanwhile, the debate has been triggered over whether PhotoMath is a dynamic technological advance in education–or a cheating-enabler.
BRIGHT IDEAS Neighbors in the Mandarin neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, complained to the city recently about a resident who scattered hundreds of mothballs–over 400 now, at least– around her front yard, even driving over them in her car to crush them open and extend their noxious odor. The National Pesticide Information Center warned that the mothballs were hazards to plants, wildlife, water and air, but the female resident (unnamed in a report by First Coast News) said she was forced into the tactic in order to prevent neighborhood dogs from defecating in her yard.
CELEBRITY MUSICALS In September in Hamburg, Germany, “Charles Manson: Summer of Hate–The Musical,” opened at the Thalia Theater, covering the influences and failed musical career of the man convicted in the notorious 1969 Sharon Tate murders. And “I Am Stephon Marbury,” a musical featuring the former star NBA basketball player, ran for 11 nights in September in Beijing, where the popular Marbury has led the Beijing Ducks to national basketball championships the last two seasons. Each part is packaged with a cheekily written educational description explaining its importance (the rectum being “the butt of many jokes” yet with “a serious role” in waste disposal as the “fecal loading dock”), and each sells for about $20.
WEIRD SCENE A woman (described only as “robust”) in Darmstadt, Germany, fled with the equivalent of about $125 from a pharmacy in October and is still at large. According to the police report, she swiped money from two cash registers by twice lifting her shirt and squirting breast milk at a clerk as a diversion. ■

h, dumpers: Look, I appreciate that you want to get rid of your giant electricity-sucking television set in a way that’s more responsible than simply dumping it in the landfill. But can’t you read the signs posted at the e-cycling lot? It says not to dump your junk on the sidewalk. Yeah, it’s too bad they’re only open a couple days a week, but that’s no reason to simply leave your old electronic crap at their gate. Is it so much trouble for you to simply wait until Tuesday or whenever to get rid of that old set? ■

THE MENTOR HOW JEANNE SKOG AND THE
MAUI ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD TRY TO BRING MAUI INTO BALANCE

other counties,” states the report, which seeks to map out the development of Maui through 2030. “A large proportion of jobs in Maui County are low wage jobs, many of them tourism-related. Most households are supported by individuals with two or more jobs.” Wanting to learn about the ongoing effort to change those numbers, to balance Maui County’s job base and economy, is what brought me to MEDB’s headquarters. It’s housed in a modern building within Kihei’s Maui Research and Technology Park. Smoothly paved roads lead to large glassy, contemporary structures. There are no sugar cane fields, plantation-era buildings, tourists or resorts here.
Seated in Skog’s office, I’m amazed at the wall-to-wall stacks of binders, reports and files covering the table behind her desk. “In 1981, Maui’s economy was dominated by tourism and agriculture,” Skog says. “We embrace both, but it’s not a future for everyone.” Skog says there was a lot of concern in the community about losing some of its youth to either Oahu or the Mainland because of the lack of opportunities outside of Maui’s dominate industries. “With them, goes the legacy of Maui,” she says. According to MEDB Program Director Sandy Ryan, it was important to develop a hightech industry to protect the island. Ryan and

rain drain. She doesn’t actually say the words, but that’s what Jeanne Unemori Skog is talking about. Skog is the president and CEO of the Maui Economic Development Board, which formed in 1982 to grow a technology sector that would help create a diversified economy for Maui County. MEDB has since expanded its programs and services to forge a foundation of education, jobs and opportunity in numerous areas including space, energy, education and community. MEDB provides conference support services to outside entities as well as hosting the annual AMOS conference, which is considered the premier tech gathering related to space situation awareness in the world. MEDB’s Education to Workforce services include Robotics Hawaii, Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, the Kamaaina Come Home program, AgTech Education, STEM Internships, Mentornet, the Ke Alahele Education Fund and the Women in Technology program, which is said to be a national model for enabling women and underrepresented minorities to realize their potential in STEM careers. The organization’s Focus Maui Nui and Youth Alliance projects provide key strategies to help define a vision for the county’s future. If you read through the Maui Island Plan and get to the chapter titled “Economic Development,” you’ll find that Maui still, to this day, “is the most reliant” of Hawaii’s four counties on tourism. “Of Maui County’s Gross County Product, 39 percent is attributed to tourism, versus a range of 19 to 29 percent for the

Skog used the United Airlines strike in the mid 1980s as an example. “As much as we embraced tourism, the concern about being vulnerable to forces out of our control weighed heavily on the leadership here,” Skog says. Terryl Vencl, MEDB board member and the Maui Visitors Bureau’s executive director, agrees. “I think the work of MEDB offers our young people choices,” Vencl says. “It prepares them in the field of technology with hands on training, education, and challenges.” Vencl says young people preparing to work in tourism and agriculture should also understand some tech knowledge so the three industries compliment each other. Offering choices to residents and students helps keep our young people home or brings them back after higher education, Vencl says. “We have been so fortunate to have the leadership, expertise and support of our board of directors from day one,” Skog tells me. “In spite of the demands they face in their careers, they come so invested in the work they do on our committees. Just as importantly, they’ve endorsed our numerous innovation efforts. They are a ‘giving’ board.” Young people leaving Maui to find more career options resonates personally with Skog, who was born and raised here. Growing up, she lived on a pineapple farm in Haiku. Skog has old photos of herself in the fields, her hands shoved in oversized gloves while she picks pineapples. It’s hard to juxtapose that image with the profession woman in a red sweater and skirt across from me.
workers lauding her leadership. “She has been a great mentor,” says Ryan. “As a mentor and a boss, Jeanne has exacted very high standards, not only for our staff, but for herself. This has translated into one of MEDB’s hallmarks–we strive for excellence in everything we do, no matter how small or monumental the task or project.... Setting these high standards has pushed our team to not only meet the expectations, but exceed them. On many occasions over the years, when speaking about personal and professional development, I have heard Jeanne say, ‘The only way you grow is when you stretch.’” Vencl, who knew Skog when she worked for Malcolm, agrees. “I believe she has carried forth the vision first set out by Don,” she says. “He would be very proud of her accomplishments and what she has done as a leader in our community.” Ryan says that Skog’s work has brought a lot of accolades to the organization. Skog was named one of the “Next 20 People to Watch” by Hawaii Business magazine. She also won the SBA Women in Business Advocate of the Year Award, the International Economic Development Council Performance Award and the Ho‘okele Award, among many others. In 2011, her influence reached a national level when President Barack Obama announced her appointment to the Commission on Presidential Scholars.

After graduating from St. Anthony’s Girls High School, Skog moved to St. Paul, Minnesota to study Education and English Literature at St. Catherine University. Skog says she decided to go away to college because she wanted to explore opportunities different from those offered at home. “Maui was, from a teenager’s eyes at that time, really dead,” she says. “Paia was nothing like it is today. It was still a plantation town at that point. In fact, when my husband first visited, there was only one traffic light in Maui.” Skog aspired to teach English Literature at the high school level but when she graduated from college in 1972, teaching jobs were scarce. While her husband, whom she married in 1972, was completing his education at University of Minnesota’s School of Architecture, Skog went to work for the Minnesota State Senate. Later she did a stint in Governor Wendell “Wendy” Anderson’s office. “That was really interesting,” Skog says. “But it was an unspoken understanding that we were going to move back to Maui.” So after her husband graduated, they returned to the island. But they weren’t here long. Four years later, Skog and her family moved to Hong Kong, where her husband’s architecture firm was opening an office. While back on Maui, Skog had worked in home furnishings doing interior decorating. When her family moved to Hong Kong for a planned three-year stay, she continued on that career path.

ues and to send clear messages to local leaders about what was wanted for the islands, its communities and their futures. MEDB helped design a process for reaching nearly 2,000 community members who don’t normally participate in those kinds of dialogues–people who have to work every day and can’t go to a conference. “We wanted their voices to be heard,” Skog says. “MEDB educates, reaches out into new frontiers such as energy, space, technology and ensures the voice of our residents remain top of mind with initiatives such as
“OF MAUI COUNTY’S GROSS COUNTY PRODUCT, 39 PERCENT IS ATTRIBUTED TO TOURISM, VERSUS A RANGE OF 19 TO 29 PERCENT FOR THE OTHER COUNTIES. A LARGE PROPORTION OF JOBS IN MAUI COUNTY ARE LOW WAGE JOBS, MANY OF THEM TOURISM-RELATED. MOST HOUSEHOLDS ARE SUPPORTED BY INDIVIDUALS WITH TWO OR MORE JOBS.” It’s always surprising when you hear a toplevel executive say her career began by answering a want-ad. But it happens more often than you’d expect—and it happened to Skog. After returning to Maui from Hong Kong, Skog saw a newspaper ad posted by the newly formed MEDB; the organization’s president was looking for an executive assistant.
I ask Skog about her memorable achievements. There were a lot of them, Skog says, reaching for a 400-page document titled Focus Maui Nui: Our Islands, Our Future. In 2002, 20 years after its inception, MEDB hosted a conference to look at where the organization was headed. “The overarching recommendations were something that we did not expect, which is that everyone needs to get on the same page– going after a shared vision,” Skog says. At the time, the County of Maui was preparing to do an update on the general plan headed toward 2030. They invested with MEDB–along with several foundations–to fund the visioning process, known as Focus Maui Nui. The project was designed to bring individuals, organizations and communities together to identify and prioritize shared val-
Focus Maui Nui,” Vencl says. The process, meetings and outcome of the Focus Maui Nui project led to the creation of a concrete vision statement–the 400-page document sitting on Skog’s desk. Simply put, the vision for Maui Nui is to be an innovative model of sustainable island living and a place where every child can grow to reach his or her potential. Skog says the needs of each individual, Maui’s natural and cultural assets, the whole community and the economy as a whole must be brought into balance to achieve that vision. “The strategies, succinctly put, are education, environment, infrastructure, economic development, culture and human needs,” Skog

Skog was not looking for an administrative assistant job, but she was intrigued by the fact that the post preferred applicants with a college degree. “That was kind of unusual at the time for an executive assistant to the president,” Skog says. “The whole concept of the organization was interesting. So I applied and interviewed and I got the job.” When she took the job in 1984, the nonprofit had a staff of two–Skog and MEDB president Don Malcolm. As the organization grew, Malcolm began delegating more responsibility to his assistant. “I feel very fortunate that he trusted me with some of those responsibilities even though they didn’t match up with what I had on paper,” Skog says. “He was a tremendous mentor–and a great person. I still remember with some awe when we had his retirement party–he said that one of the best decisions he had made was hiring me. I was totally floored and humbled. It was such an incredibly generous compliment.” Skog worked her way from administrative assistant to vice president. In 1999, she was elected MEDB president and CEO by its board of directors. Today, it’s Skog’s co-
As part of that commission, Skog reviews hundreds of applications to select up to 141 high school seniors who will receive the presidential honor. Those who receive the recognition meet with the commission during a trip to Washington DC. “It’s really quite an experience to meet them in person,” Skog says about the nation’s top students. “It’s a very inspiring and uplifting experience.” This year, the DC trip featured an added bonus–the commission and scholars met with First Lady Michelle Obama. “She has such a persona and such a presence,” Skog says about Michelle Obama. “She is very charismatic, very friendly and very warm.”
says. “These are all important strategies; you don’t sacrifice one over the other. It is not easy, but you have to recognize and respect that all these needs exist. When you go down the path of only recognizing and shooting for one need, that’s when we run into a huge challenge. Ryan says the MEDB is always striving to help insure that residents are armed with enough balanced information so they can make informed decisions about the future of the county. “There are trade-offs,” Ryan says. “Sometimes economic and environmental concerns might compete for one another. But in order to make an informed decision, everybody has to be at the table.” Ultimately, it’s about improving Maui’s quality of life. “Maui remains a place for families of all kinds–a place where a family can thrive,” Skog says. “If you’re looking at creating a place for our residents and their families, you’ve got to look at jobs. If you’re looking at jobs, you’ve got to look at the kind of businesses you’re able to attract or grow. It comes back to quality of life and doing what we can to contribute to it, whether it’s through me personally or through the organization. Everything else emanates from there. “Our deep appreciation must go to our community who have been so responsive to our new initiatives,” Skog adds. “Whether we need mentors from business, a partner for Ag education, or donors for our annual Ke Alahele request to support STEM education, they’ve risen to the occasion and helped us reach or exceed goals. As the saying goes, it takes a village.” ■

leaf, and stronger in flavor; white is the opposite, being milder and less oxidized. The rest fall into place in between. Tisanes cover all of the herbal infusions that do not have Camellia sinensis leaves in them. The variety and flavors of London Teas that they carry is impressive. London Tea is the brand name, but all of these teas come mainly from Asia, Holt explained. That’s where the plant grows and is harvested. Tea Box imports theirs from China. Holt says he has a special family connection that has opened up their loose leaf road from China. The rare and gourmet teas that they carry aren’t really seen elsewhere on Maui. “Some of the best teas for Maui would be the tangerine ginger,” said Holt. “If you’re feeling a little something in your throat from the vog, this wipes it out completely. Another one is the ginger turmeric–perfect for digestion. If you have had a big lunch, or have any nausea, this will turn you right.”

he Tea Box in Recarte Holt and Roe is a highly evolving space in Wailuku Town. It started out as an eclectic fine writing instrument shop with art supplies and interesting gifts. But now it’s changing into a gourmet loose leaf tea shop that also serves tea parties and high tea. “It started because when people would come in to buy a pen, they would have to wait while I set them up,” said owner Stevan Holt. “Then I would offer them a cup of tea. They liked the tea so much they would come back asking for it. It just clicked.” The store itself is still an artistic gathering place where you can pick up fine pens, journals and stationery. But they now have tea pots, cups and much of the accoutrement dedicated to drinking fine teas. They also have glass jars housing the various forms of dried Camellia sinensis–the shrub that Black, Oolong, Green, Pu-erh and White teas all come from. Black tea is a more oxidized form of the
The exquisite London Tea Merchant (LTM) tea here runs about $8 for two ounces. Before you scoff, a box of gourmet tea at the market may run similar. Besides, loose leaf teas last longer, you also use less tea in the process of brewing a cup and you can brew them more than once in a sitting. In fact, Oolongs are said to be better when the leaves are brewed more than once (as are the Pu-erh leaves). The shop sells all the tea diffusers and pots and tea cups necessary to serve you a cup or a pot in house. What’s more, Tea Box also serves high tea. Think of it as an elegant afternoon spent with your pinkies extended while you sip tea from Tea Boxes’ elegant China, nibble on snacks and sweets brought out on tiered trays and chat merrily. It brings out the British Society in you (no corset needed). Holt said they have partnerships with Zing, Stillwell’s and Four Sisters bakery for their teatime biscuits, delicate sandwiches and sweets. High Tea is reserved a day in advance and is best suited for a reservation of four or more ($35 each). You can taste any of their teas. Our experience with high tea was debonair. We began with the amuse bouche of cool beet puree with creme fraiche and then straight to three tiers of delicious biscuits and cookies. Each person chose their own pot of tea–we had the Naughty Vicar, one of LTM’s most popular flavored Black tea blends with vanilla and black currant. The coconut Oolong was a very light tea but robust with tropical flavor. We also tried the Pu-erh of blood orange, a very flavorful dark astringent tea. After the biscuit course, we headed to the savories, again served on a tiered tray. Layers of pretty cucumber sandwiches with crusts trimmed, ham and cheese rolled into elegant bite size wraps and hummus and veggie stuffed mini pitas were filling and tasty. Then, the final sweets course: glorious Stillwell’s pies, apple tarts and mini decadence cakes. The shop itself has become quite well-suited for tea supping. Cushiony chairs and tea tables abound the space, with plenty of art and books for you to peruse. It’s decorated with dandy bric-abrac for sale, so shelves of intrigue surround you. Resident artist Loren Adams also has a display where he comes to

HANDY TEA GUIDE Black Tea: Full oxidization, long lasting flavors. Full bodied and astringent. Highest in caffeine content. Commonly flavored like Earl Grey with bergamot oil. Green Tea: Minimal oxidizing, slight grassy flavors. Loses its flavor inside of a year. About half the caffeine as Black tea. Oolong Tea: A traditional Chinese tea. Hybrid between Black and Green teas. White Tea: Think minimal processing, practically plucked and dried with little oxidization and very little caffeine. Mildest in flavor, often fruit and flowers are added to its mix. Pu-erh: Fermented tea. This is a Black tea that has aged, allowing a bacteria activation in the leaf. Tisane: Blends of herbals, spices and fruits. No caffeine, save for Yerba Mate tea. Rooibos: A South African plant, that creates a non caffeinated alternative similar in flavor to english breakfast tea. Also called red tea- Rooibos means ‘red bush.’

avocado, Oaxaca cheese, their houseprepared jalapenos and chipotle mayo. The Cubano is also the most popular torta in Mexico City as well, and typically utilizes all the meats the establishment has. “[Our] recipes, for the most part, came from visiting Mexico City many times in 2013,” Martinez said. “We sought out the best tasting tortas and then came back and tried to recreate these with the use of local products. It was a trial-and-error process. We wanted to get as close to the tortas we tried in Mexico as we possibly could. Many of the recipes we use came from family and friends and we added our own flair to it. With many years of experience in the restaurant business, it wasn’t hard before we were happy with what we had created.”

here is one aspect of Mexican cuisine that hasn’t been exploited to the level burritos and tacos have enjoyed, and that is the torta. Torterias line Mexico City streets, each with its own style of torta, which is generally a meaty sandwich stuffed with beans, Oaxaca cheese, onion and avocado. I never gave much thought to Mexican sandwiches–mostly because I love tortillas–but the torta is revered at Tortugas. When I first saw the name Tortugas, I immediately thought of Pirates of the Caribbean and turtles. So I asked owner Luis Martinez about the name. “’Tortugas’ in Spanish means ‘turtles,’” he said. “But in Mexico City, people also use this word when talking about tortas as a slang. People will say, ‘Let’s go get some Tortugas’ instead of tortas. So once we zoned in on the concept, we thought that Tortugas would be fitting, being that we specialize in tortas and that Maui is a haven for turtles.”
The torta is street food–think of it as a po’boy of Mexico fused with some fillings familiar to the taco and burrito. They are portable, filling and usually very meaty. The bread is soft, oval-shaped roll called the telera. Tortugas has gets their teleras made in a local bakery. They also prepare all their fillings by hand in the restaurant. “Every meat we use here in the restaurant is carefully handled and prepared by our team,” said Martinez. “We have strict recipe guidelines so that we make sure that we only use the very best. We use different cuts– chicken thigh is juicier and more flavorful than breast; beef rib-eye is very tender and flavorful; and pork shoulder. From these and a couple other cuts, we cook and prep the different torta and taco ingredients. We do not use chorizo that came from some factory and then add ingredients to it like so many others. Ours is made from scratch: we use ground pork and mix over 13 different spices and peppers. The result is an explosion of flavors.” Their most popular torta is the Cubano, which contains lightly breaded rib-eye, chorizo and slow-cooked pork ham. The sandwich also contains chipotle beans,
was tender, slow-roasted and shredded. The textures and combination of onion, beans and jalapeno was new to me, but certainly enjoyable. You can add a gastro-pub flair by ordering an egg on any torta, too. They also serve breakfast with a chorizo potato and egg version and a beef and egg version called the Machaca. At first, Tortugas resisted putting tacos on the menu, but seeing the popularity of the requested item they eventually relented and added a half dozen different versions, ranging from $1.99 to $2.25. They’re served “street style”–ala carte– with two heated corn tortillas stuffed with whatever you order. You won’t find heaps of lettuce and tomato here, just onions, cilantro and Cojita. They’re also drizzled with green or red sauce.
Tacos
Tortugas features nearly a dozen different Tortas, ranging in price from $7 to $10. The Hawaiian is a ham and pineapple riff; the Chicken Milanesa includes breaded chicken and ham; and the Three Sausage is a melting pot sando of beef franks, chorizo and Portuguese sausage. All have beans, cheese and various veggies consisting of Maui onion, jalapeno and/or avocado. They also offer a meatless variety with cotija and oaxaca, tomato, avo, onion and beans. The keiki tortas are kid-friendly Beef Frank and Egg, Spam and Egg or Chicken and Ham and sell for $3.99. You’re also welcome to design your own. The ingredients are along a line Subway-style. During a recent visit, I tried their new Pork Adobo Torta. The pork in adobo sauce
“What inspired us to do tortas was that we love them,” Martinez said. “We also know how important they are to true Mexicans. Living here, we realized that there were a few Mexican places, but focused on mainstream Mexican. We wanted to do something very authentic and it doesn’t get more authentic than Tortas!” Tortugas is also working on a food truck to take their tortas on the road to Kihei and Lahaina. They open at 8am and are located around the corner from Longs and Whole Foods at the Maui Mall. They serve food through 8pm. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s website at: mauitime.com

Tale Told By Idiots ‘Dumb And Dumber To’ is funny at first, then falls apart
★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 109 Min.
I
’ve never known a bigger fan of Dumb and Dumber than Tim, my brother-in-law. I’ve known him since he was in high school and remember when he used to watch that movie so much, it kind of worried me. It got to the point where he’d watch it with the sound off and quote it, line by line. I love that movie but really, Tim loved it in a way I reserve for films by Stanley Kubrick or Terrence Malick. So of course, when it came time for the sequel (let’s just pretend that dreadful prequel never happened), it was essential that I bring Tim with me. Sure enough, his presence only confirmed my overall view of the film. For about the first 40 minutes, we laughed like jackals. Then, around the time a hit man subplot takes up too much focus and the big laughs became too few, we both realized that, sadly, this belated sequel wasn’t going to deliver. The story picks up with Harry (Jim Carrey) and Lloyd (Jeff Bridges) now on a quest to find the long lost daughter Lloyd had with a one-night-stand (played by
Kathleen Turner, a great actress slumming it in a truly hideous role). Along the way, they incur the wrath of a pair of grifters, a hitman, a building full of scientists and everyone else who crosses their path. Initially, Tim and I laughed a lot. Carrey and Daniels are amazing to watch, making it look so easy to slip into their famous roles and embody their boundless idiocies. Carrey is so fully in his element here, evoking the same crazed energy and go-for-broke approach for laughs, it’s as though we were watching a performance unveiled from 20 years ago. Watching Carrey spar with Daniels, it’s like he was still the breakout star of Ace Ventura and best known for talking out of his derriere. Likewise, Daniels so completely immersed into the mindset of his child-like doofus, I almost forgot I’m watching a serious dramatic actor. The jokes are cheerfully vulgar and the one-liners are shockingly un-PC, in a manner that, like the work of the two leads, made me wonder if the screenplay was also unearthed from 1994. There’s no point in complaining that the movie is stupid but it does become awfully plot-heavy and stale, both in its subplots and the jokes. Rob Riggle is one of the funniest actors
If you know a better way to do laundry, I'd like to hear it
in movies right now and Laurie Holden (who co-starred with Carrey in The Majestic) is so appealing and gorgeous that she could have been a movie star in the 1940s. Together they’re playing a couple of marrythe-old-guy-and-take-his-money con artists and, strangely, this part of the movie doesn’t click. It’s odd to see Riggle and Holden trying but failing to ignite the same character types Rob Lowe and Bo Derek played with amusing panache in Tommy Boy. The same general plot scenario of let’sfind-my-kid was the basis for the Robin Williams/Billy Crystal fiasco, Father’s Day. The subplots growing around the central story are as unnecessary as the cocaine-indiaper-bag crime plot that hurt the otherwise
charming Three Men and a Baby. Much of this feels old hat, which shouldn’t be a surprise from a sequel to a 20-year-old movie. Too many comic dead spots and an unsatisfying wrap up take the (flatulent) wind out its sails, as some of this is uproarious. A gag involving, of all things, an address on an envelope had me roaring. So did most of the first act, when it seemed Carrey, Daniels and The Farrelly Brothers directing team had pulled it off. Biggest tell-tale sign it doesn’t fully come off: the scene that made Tim laugh the hardest was the quick bit after the end credits. Not exactly a glowing endorsement from the biggest Dumb and Dumber fan I’ve ever met in my life. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
If you were a door-to-door salesperson this week, you’d make a bloody fortune. You can talk anyone into anything right now. Go ahead and convince the bartender to give you free drinks, or your boss to give everyone an extra-long lunch hour. But when it comes to changing someone’s mind about anything that’s important, be sure that the consequences will be more good than bad—because you’ll have to live with them either way. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
You’ve got so many strings in your hands, I can’t tell if you’re some kind of puppet master, professional knitter, or sailor. I don’t know if you can make people dance, get them naked (by unraveling their sweaters), hoist sails to exotic locales, or all three. All I know is: you’ve got power. Will you exercise it? Should you? I don’t know. What I do know is that being connected to so many people and situations may make you powerful, but it also makes you responsible. Hadn’t thought about it that way yet? Well, consider it before you go pulling strings and making things happen. I think you’re ready for that responsibility, but—do you? AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
Politics should not be emotional. Running the government ought to be strictly a pencil-pushing, get-thingsdone affair, not this epic battle over ideas. It’s because people can’t separate their emotions from their politics that some really dumb, poorly-qualified people sometimes get elected—without unreasoning fear and blind faith, they wouldn’t stand a chance. This week, don’t let your practical head stuff get too intermixed with all the sloppy, illogical heart stuff. There are times when it’s good to let one influence the other, to revel in the gorgeous mess that usually results. But this isn’t one of them. Keep your brain’s business and your soul’s passions as separate as church and state aresupposed to be in our government. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Unrealistic romance is the name of the game this weekend. This isn’t a bad thing, at all. By all means, indulge yourself with soft lighting and long, soul-melting staring matches. Don’t read too much into it, though; enjoy the moments thoroughly, but resist the urge to make promises that may wither under the harsh fluorescents of the coming week. If, by next Thursday, you’re still feeling the way you did while pouring red wine down each others’ throats on the candlelit bearskin hearth rug, then swear eternal fealty, endless adoration, or whatever feels right—but not before.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
You may wrack your brain this week, trying to recall if you’ve recently eaten oysters, or somehow consumed powdered rhinoceros horn. You’ll probably want to come up with some explanation for this off-the-hook horniness. Stop looking suspiciously around the office trying to figure out who slipped Viagra into your morning coffee. It’s actually just you. Indulge your lascivious urges. Why not? If you don’t currently have a regular lover or friend with benefits, there’s nothing wrong with a long weekend of self-pleasure, or a wellhandled, no illusions one-night stand.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Cancers, as a tribe, have a special mix of down-toearth practicality and whacked out emotions which can lead to some fascinating and brilliant innovations, along with many, many messes. The trouble is, you rarely deliberately apply this combination to anything outside yourself, so people almost never get a glimpse of this cool brand of creativity. This week, escape your own fascinating but limited inner world and bring your faculties to bear on situations that will actually, tangibly affect other people. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
tattoos by Rachel G
It’s not exactly A Christmas Carol, but you ought to identify with Ebenezer this week anyway, as unlikely spirits provide you with an unsettling picture of an alternate reality. The weird thing is: you may not like what you see. Take these visions to heart and consider how your personal aspirations could affect the people around you, and create unanticipated ripples in your life. You needn’t turn aside completely from the evolutionary journey you embarked on a while back. But shifting a few degrees in either direction might mean the difference between finding paradise and getting completely lost. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
You’re lucky this week. I don’t know why; you’ve just got this glow about you, like good things are going to happen. Happy accidents. Be flexible and open to them. Try new things. You’ll probably never get the results you expect, but the surprises will be even better. I can almost guarantee it. Be alert to these startling outcomes, because they could be openings to new paths you’d never before considered—didn’t even know existed, in fact—which are actually exactly your flavor. Don’t miss these turn-offs from the highway you’re on. They’re the kinds of detours that make the whole trip worthwhile.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Everything is sex. We know this—your problem is that it’ll be hard to view it in any other light this week, given the fact that your astrological omens are having a nonstop orgy. Sexuality is the lens through which you’re blessed or doomed to see the world right now. It’s not so bad—it’s bound to get you laid a bunch, after all—but for those who aren’t quite so one-track as you, it could get a bit old, so you might want to keep your filthy thoughts to yourself. In other words, you can’t help what you see, nor how you see it, but you can keep from saying it all out loud, or worse, acting it out. Restraint (no, not restraints, you horndog) can be sexy. Try it. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Love is the answer, you’ll probably decide this week. That’s because the planets have brewed up an intense dose of high-grade Ecstasy for you. Call and visit everyone you know, just to tell them how much you adore them. Sure, you’ll get funny looks—someone might even be concerned enough to slip you the number to the suicide hotline—but so what? Most people will be pleasantly surprised (beneath their initial discomfort) to receive this kind of effusiveness from you. Don’t miss this chance to spill your guts and wax poetic, because who knows when your next one might be?
Announcing that you’ve changed your mind about something won’t raise many eyebrows; you’re notoriously flexible about your ideas and opinions. However, trying to force your brand new viewpoint on others will shock those you subject your zealotry to— not only because it’s completely out of character, but also because it’s in bad taste. Oh, you know that this time you’re right, probably more right than you’ve ever been, but still—let it settle for a while before you go spreading the good word. Now you just seem brainwashed and culty. In a couple of weeks or months you’ll seem either batshit crazy—or 100% right. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
The unrequited love thing is so tired and boring. Please resist falling into that trap (again). It’s going to be yawning open for you this week. Generally mistrust any attractions that spring up this week. They’re probably screwed: Either your blossoming crush is focused on someone you secretly know you can’t have, or it has nothing to do with the actual person— it’s all about what you’re projecting onto her, or him. Neither should you abandon these feelings. They could be real. They might even have long-term potential. My point is that there’s no way to know, just now. Wait it out. You’ll know in two weeks’ time whether this is something to jump at, or run away from. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com.
