Coconut Wireless division 17,000 killed and wounded. As a fascinating counterweight to the material on Maui’s Marine base, Neal– who’s big on maps–showed me the museum’s many fascinating and rare Japanese maps and images. He began with a book of Japanese war art. As was the custom with old books, the images are pasted to the pages, which are bound by ribbon. The images aren’t so much propaganda as actual war art (many combatant nations, including the United States, attached artists as well as photographers and correspondents to combat units). Neal’s exhibits also display a Japanese resource map, showing the locations and details of natural resources throughout the Dutch East Indies and Pacific, a commemorative set of photos of the attack on Pearl Harbor that was produced right after the attack and a Japanese painting of a Gozen Kaigi, a rare conference of

Story of Hawaii museum

STORY OF HAWAII MUSEUM OFFERS NEW LOOK AT 4TH MARINE DIVISION ON MAUI DURING WWII When I arrived at the Story of Hawaii Museum in the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center in Kahului on the afternoon of Friday, Dec. 5, Buck Mickelsen–who helps run the place–immediately noticed my shirt, which had drawings of old Inter-Island Airways S-38 and S-43 seaplanes on the back. He immediately walked me over to a book of old photos near the back and began showing me photos of the planes flying over Manoa Valley, taking off at Kona and awaiting passengers at old John Rodgers Field on Oahu. Much as I would have loved spending the afternoon glancing through black and white images of very old aircraft, I was there to see Bryant Neal, Mickelsen’s partner. Neal was just finishing a new exhibit on Camp Maui, the 4th Marine Division’s island base during World War II, and I was anxious to see the results. The new exhibit centers around a group of photos and text taken from the 4th Marine Division’s official history from World War II. During the fight against the Japanese, the War Department stationed thousands of marines on Maui, both for training and rest. “Jungle training was big there,” Neal says. But rest and recreation were just as important, if not more so. “As the months rolled by, Maui more and more became ‘home’ to the men of the Fourth,” states the division history. “USOs in Haiku, Makawao, Kahului, and Wailuku furnished hot showers, games, swimming, tennis, dances, and refreshments. It was here that Marines met the girls of Maui; many a friendship was formed and many a romance blossomed.

Back in camp, officer and NCO clubs were built and the beer lines at Post Exchanges became longer and longer.” “I think these guys had the best rest stop in the war,” Neal said. “The people of Maui were enthusiastic about these guys.” Neal then brought out a couple pieces of war memorabilia not typically found in a museum. They were old single-use Primo beer bottles, one green, one brown. Neal said they came from a guy named Tim Bauer, who lives in Haiku near the old Camp Maui site (4th Marine Division Park there covers a portion of the old base) and digs them out of the ground. Bauer maintains his own online museum of sorts of the old Marine Corps relics he discovers (4th-marine-division-campmaui-relics-museum.com). There you can find images of U.S. Navy spoons, shell casings, buttons and even what appears to be a dummy hand grenade. He also has a link to his eBay page where he sells some of the old Primo bottles he discovers. The Story of Hawaii Museum’s emphasis on R&R is entirely warranted: In the Pacific, the 4th Marine Division fought on Roi Namur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. By the end of the war, those battles cost the

contained perhaps the first published photos of the attackers (Honolulu papers published right after the attack only contained shots of the aftermath). He also has Japanese magazines published during the war on display. “You look at the faces of these pilots,” Neal told me. “They were kids.” Neal also has a small, vintage Japanese print of the emperor that bears the image of the cherry blossom, Hirohito’s official seal. In the print, the emperor is seated atop a white horse. It’s a surreal image, with the emperor a little too crisp against the hazy background. But perhaps Neal’s most impressive holding is a very large, very rare Japanese strategy map (Neal said he knows a guy in Japan who sends him Pearl Harbor-related maps, images and so forth; another friend who speaks Japanese helps him with translations). Printed in March 1941, it was originally in four pieces as it had to be broken down and

the government and emperor. One depicted at the Story of Hawaii museum was the last Gozen Kaigi, in which Emperor Hirohito’s cabinet dealt with the terms of the Japanese surrender shortly before the end of the war. After looking that over, Neal showed me a newspaper from Japan, dated Dec. 8. It

moved from place to place, but has since been restored to a single piece. Neal said he’s also in the process of getting a similarly-sized Japanese community map. “I had been under the impression that the Japanese government kept the people in the dark,” he told me. “But they had community maps that the used when they went around explaining war strategy to people.” The museum has little on Maui’s other wartime camp–the internment camp for Japanese nationals that was also in Haiku– but the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center in Kahului (Nvmc.org) has an exhibit on internees throughout Hawaii that runs through Dec. 13. As for that Camp Maui exhibit at the Story of Hawaii Museum, Neal said that should run through the end of January. News Of The Weird THE CREATIVE CLASS To spark interest in the new leisure center opening in spring 2015 in Selby in North Yorkshire, England, the management company WLCT sponsored a contest to name the center, with the prize a year’s free membership. On Nov. 5, General Manager Paul Hirst announced that Steve Wadsworth was the winner, proclaiming, “Well done to Steve on winning the competition.” The winning entry: “Selby Leisure Centre.”

FIRST RULE ABOUT FEMALE FIGHT CLUB... A German woman who identifies herself only as “Anna Konda” described to Vice Media in October her Female Fight Club in Berlin, now three years old, for women to test themselves in all-out wrestling matches. While some are fetishmotivated dominants, others display no particular sexuality–like Anna herself, who, she admits, simply likes to “crush” men’s and women’s skulls between her massive thighs. Anna says she is a product of East Germany’s cliched development of tough, muscular female athletes.

In October, a mother charged that officials at E.R. Dickson School in Mobile, Alabama, first detained her daughter, 5, for pointing a crayon at another student as if it were a gun, and then pressured the girl to sign a paper promising not to kill anyone or commit suicide. “What is suicide, Mommy?” the girl asked when her parents arrived.

STUPIDEST GAME EVER The West Briton newspaper reported in October that a darts team composed

of blind men was ready for its inaugural match at an inn in Grampound, England, sponsored by the St. Austell Bay Rotary Club. The inn’s landlord acknowledged that the game-room door would be closed “just in case” a dart strays off course. (The blind darters would be aided by string attached to the bull’s eye that they could feel for guidance.)

COMEDY CAN BE CRUEL Twice in September, police in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, reported that women had complained of a motorist who would stop female strangers on the street to tell them jokes about blond women. The jokes were not sexual, but still made the women “uncomfortable.” A high school girl told her mother of a similar episode. Based on a license plate number, police visited the man at home and he agreed to stop.

PERSPECTIVE Despite a 70-year-old U.S. Supreme Court decision to the contrary, six states still have laws exempting parents from homicide charges when they deny a child life-saving medical care because they trust no remedy except prayer. Even among those states, all of the deaths since 1994 under those circumstances have occurred in Idaho, where (according to a November report by Vocativ.com) no prosecutor seems willing to put a trust-in-God parent before a jury. Children in Idaho have died when simple medical treatments were available (e.g., insulin and fluids for Type I diabetes). Neighboring Oregon, by contrast, now vigorously prosecutes parents who let their children die, including a 13-year-old girl’s parents convicted in November in Albany, Oregon.

Take in the good life with these gifts of health and pleasure. Stop by the local spa, find gift certificates from the e nearby yoga studio or suds-up with neighborhood made soaps.

Before big box retailers had their eye on your money, everyone had to shop local. Maui’s shopping landscape has made vast changes, but our mantra to retail remains the same–for Maui to be Maui, we have to buy local. And that means looking for Made on Maui goods, local artisans and supporting locally owned merchants. Not all of these shops can keep their shelves stocked with only Maui-manufactured goods, but plenty of our stores are very akamai about the subject and do their best to keep their dollars local. Put simply, gift shopping local means valuing quality over quantity. We‘ve found something for everyone: beach bunnies, techies, foodies, keiki and sporty types. Surf shops along Hana Highway and select spots in the Maui Mall and the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center are great places to start. Take the time to look for local shops and ask for Maui-made products wherever you go. The streets of Wailuku, Paia and Makawao are also lined with unique boutiques. In Lahaina, head to the Gateway Center, Cannery Mall and, of course, Front Street for locally owned stores. Just about every weekend under the Banyan Tree, island artisans gather and sell a many number of their works. The Azeka Shopping Center, Kukui Mall and Shops at Wailea ALSO have locally owned shops. Then there are craft fairs, farmers markets and the Maui Swap Meet. Want to do your shopping at home? Etsy.com makes it easy to shop in your neighborhood–just enter your zip code and check off handmade on your search and you’ll be amazed at the thousands of items born on Maui. Holiday gifts for all year, holiday gifts to give good cheer

A Brief History Of Stephen Hawking ‘The Theory of Everything’ would make a great TV movie

★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 123 Min.

I

first read Stephen W. Hawking’s A Brief History of Time when I was in the fifth grade. During a sleepover at a friend’s house, I discovered my classmate was obsessed with it and quoted it daily. It was also the first time I became aware that I had friends with intellectual capacities far greater than my own. But Hawking had written a book in laymen’s terms and made accessible his headier, more impenetrable ideas, like worm holes. Clearly, the man with Lou Gehrig’s Disease on the book cover was a genius. Consider The Theory of Everything the film biography of Hawking’s life. It’s conventional in narrative, and you can feel the plot points and story turns coming like clockwork. We meet Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) in college, when he’s described as “strange” and comes across as an outsider who’s awkward, smiles easily and seems very sweet. It’s love at first sight when he encounters Jane (Felicity Jones), who shares his passion for unorthodox ideas, if not his intellectual reach. The film provides visual cues and verbal hints where it’s going all along: we know things are about to go bad for Stephen, as

his romantic courtship with Jane is so intoxicating, we’re being set up for something bad that must follow. While it's handled with subtlety and taste, we observe moments where Hawking is clearly detecting his affliction taking over his body. While the dialogue is always sharp, I wanted a presentation that was more unorthodox and dug deeper into its central figure. Hawking’s astonishing survival and mental escape from his body should be celebrated and portrayed in a loving cinematic ode, but this one is merely pretty good, instead of the masterpiece it could have been. First and foremost, this is worth seeing for Redmayne’s transformative and truly amazing performance. He looks like every picture I’ve seen of Hawking and always hones in on the touching, frustrating and vast intelligence and idiosyncrasies of the man. Jones was heart-breaking in Like Crazy and is just as good here. The best moments are silent, as the camera gets real close and shows us how, almost immediately, Stephen and Jane shared an endearing, almost wordless understanding of one another. I loved the scene of them seemingly sharing a telepathic conversation, during their first dinner at his parents' house. There’s also a terrific moment where we see Jane try to introduce a new form of communication after an operation leaves Stephen

Wanna go back to my place and see my cosmic inflation?

without speech: the tender, defeated looks they share are devastating. The film is more clearly about Jane and what she sacrificed. This makes sense, since it’s based on her book. The introduction of a new friend and romantic threat initially seems handled with tact, until we get the inevitable scenes of the forbidden lovers declaring their secret attraction. It may be a reflection on what really took place, but it feels overly familiar. We never get a richer, more layered sense of Hawking and what he’s going through, aside from the painful physical transformation. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a far stronger, visually and in its ability to make audiences understand what it’s like to be trapped in your own body. Two scenes stand out for crashing and burning. One has the sounds of a piano

cueing a romantic smooch, which is fine for a Nicholas Sparks movie, but not this one. Then there’s a fantasy sequence where Hawking imagines himself walking; this well-intentioned but botched scene brings to mind the ill-advised TV ad that Christopher Reeve once made, in which CGI showed him walking out of his chair. Jane’s faith in God contrasts intriguingly with Hawking’s atheism, a subject that recurs throughout their courtship and into their marriage. It works as a running theme. So does the end credits, which visualize Hawking’s grand illustrations on the cosmos. This is too TV movie-ready for the man whose extraordinary life it portrays. Still, Johann Johannsson’s beautiful score and Redmayne’s astonishing performance make it worthwhile. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

What if your parents learned about many of the things you do (or have done)? You’ll likely have at least one idea about Mom/Pop turned on its head this week, as you discover something about their reckless youth you’d never guess. This is not to say they’re suddenly going to be open-minded sitcom parents who’ll work their way around to understanding everything you believe and do, so don’t be stupid and spill all your wisely-kept secrets. But please be flexible. Railroading your parents into only being exactly who you thought they were would be a huge, very regrettable mistake. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You’re a lab rat trapped in a maze. Whether the maze is your annual family holiday gathering, winter doldrums, or some other labyrinth, the worst thing you could do is slump despondently against a wall and wait for it to be over. Not only will that forestall your imminent discovery of the exit, it would have scientists (or overanxious relatives, employers, etc.) prodding you and messing with you for weeks. Wouldn’t you rather suffer a little now (and soon escape into the comfortably familiar privacy of your regular life) than suffer a lot later (and perhaps never get away)? AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Recall (or imagine) the moment when the umbilical cord between you and Mom was severed. Since then you’ve proceeded—almost in a perfectly straight line—towards ever-greater independence and selfsufficiency. It’s important to keep that profound first “step” in mind, because the one you face this week is much like that—something (or someone) you counted on can no longer support you. The umbilical cord’s been cut. You’re on your own. Luckily, you’ve been doing this all your life; it’s second nature. It’s as simple as opening your mouth and inhaling, deep. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Make plans this week. Actual plans; you know, real commitments it’d be hard to back out of. Flying by the seat of your pants is fine most of the time. But don’t be so selfish. Some of the people involved like knowing what to expect. You don’t really need the thrill of surprise every time, do you? Carefully planned fun might be the only kind some of the people you know are capable of having. Indulge them, would you? No matter how thoroughly you schedule every minute of the coming week, I promise you’re in for some surprises nevertheless.

the effort. You don’t have to go out naked and utterly vulnerable into the cruel, harsh world, though. Give yourself buffers; shades, iPod, and spiked mulled wine are all acceptable self-medication to help you get through the messiness. You can run around nude and unprotected next week, when you might actually want to. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

You’re a field mouse in a hawk’s grip. You were careless the last time you crossed the meadow, and a sharp-eyed falcon swooped in and snatched you up so fast you barely had time to blink. There’s nothing you can do about it now except relax and wait to be consumed—struggling won’t free you, only grind your soft parts against razor-sharp talons. Fortuitously, this particular bird of prey doesn’t have quite the stomach to digest all of you—with any luck it’ll only eat the pieces you’re better off without. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Unfamiliar situations can be overwhelming. A new school might resemble an unfathomable labyrinth; the responsibilities of a promotion can induce sensations of drowning; being presented to your future in-laws makes you want to hide in their guest bathroom and overdose on pills filched from their medicine cabinet. Later, though, you’d navigate the corridors and social convolutions of your once-bewildering school with unconscious ease, forgetting that they ever confounded you; you’d breeze through once-nerve-wracking daily work tasks with time left over for an extended coffee break; you’d joke with your in-laws without a qualm. This is one of those times. No matter how messed up and beset you feel now, you’ll get over it—so thoroughly, that in three months time you’ll barely remember ever suffering any doubt at all. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

In your mind, certain tasks—tending houseplants, cooking, or interacting with kids, for example—fall under some kind of mystic subheading, comprising skills that either people possess naturally, or they don’t have at all. That lets you off the hook, doesn’t it, when your nieces run screaming, or the geraniums lose all their leaves? Screw that. While these skills might come more effortlessly to some, anyone can learn how to keep a houseplant alive, cook a decent meal, and at least not alienate or frighten children. So you weren’t born with whatever aptitude’s required. So what? Acquire it. You can. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You’re used to advocating unpopular viewpoints— you sometimes consider it your job. You’re also accustomed to doing it solo, which is why you might not notice that someone is doing their best to aid and abet you this week, and you might miss out if you’re not paying attention. You’ve got, instead, a potential ally who’s at least your equal. In other words, you both could go twice as far in half the time—if you manage to notice each other. That, my friend, is this week’s task. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

With the prevalence of camera-phones and other cheap recording technology, our lives are less private than they ever were. This is especially dismaying to you Taureans—not because you’ve got anything more to hide than anyone else, but because you value privacy for philosophical, perhaps even sensual reasons. Luckily, you’re in a position this week to do two very important things: one bold action that could help conserve and protect whatever privacy you have left, and another that could grant you the serenity to glide unperturbed through any intrusions you simply can’t prevent. Good luck on both fronts. Do us proud. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Resist your impulse to hide under the bed until the week’s over. Risk a nervous breakdown by participating as you know you should—it’s worth

Quit your junk food diet, baby. Right now. Don’t stop with merely tossing the Cheese Doodles. Renounce your addiction to crappy reality TV, trash fiction, comfortable lies, and emotional shortcuts. You’re badly in need of a diet; your beleaguered heart’s valves are clogged with cholesterol, sentimental saccharin, and the arterial plaque of dishonesty. It’s not too late for a multi-pronged cure. Change your diet: Start devouring oat bran, intelligent literature, leafy greens, and bitter truths. Work up a sweat, too: Unabashed honesty and a forthright distinction between desires and reality should raise your pulse rate. If it doesn’t, you might not be doing it right. Try again, please. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Be careful wielding your hyper-charged emotions. You might accidentally screw up your life with a randomly-flung tear, comment, or giggle. A burst of anger could set fire to your neighbor’s Christmas tree, a fit of weeping might drown the cat, or the cackle of your zany laughter could shatter windows all over town. You’ve basically been handed a razor-sharp tansu sword. Swiftly demonstrate your supreme control over this much deadly power, before people flee in terror. You’re fated to evoke one of two emotions in the people around you this week: panicked dread, or surprised respect. It’s your choice which.
