WHAT REALLY HAPPENED DURING THE MCCC ‘DISTURBANCE?’
IS THE WORST HOSPITAL SOAP OPERA EVER FINALLY OVER? And now, hopefully, we can bring the curtain down on one of the scariest political dramas to hit Maui County in the last
munications Office summed up the changes added to the new bill, which is a bit stronger now on employee protections: “HB1075, CD1 requires MRS to resolicit proposals from any party locally and nationally interested in partnering with it to operate its hospitals,” stated the news release. “It will also allow the Governor to direct negotiations for the transfer of MRS facilities to protect and further the state’s interest in controlling the levels of financial support for HHSC operations and maintaining current levels of access to healthcare services on Maui. “The measure will also preserve all rights, benefits and privileges earned by HHSC employees and requires the new nonprofit management to offer employment to all employees of facilities transferred for at least six months. “In addition, the measure would cap the state’s financial support to the transitioned facilities at the amounts pro-

If you read the Apr. 29 Honolulu StarAdvertiser, Maui Now or Mauiwatch (or the Apr. 30 The Maui News, when they finally got around to reporting it), you learned that there was some sort of “disturbance” on the morning of Apr. 29 at Maui Community Correctional Center. The above-cited news organizations all got their information from a Hawaii Department of Public Safety press release (actually, two press releases because the first one contained an error) sent out around 9:30am on Apr. 29–roughly three hours after the “disturbance” had taken place. All the stories (and the press releases) are essentially the same: inmates in one of the MCCC modules created a “disturbance” at breakfast, but after staff “implemented crisis response procedures” it ended “peacefully” a half hour later. The inmates were then “locked down” for the next 24 hours. The number of inmates involved in the “disturbance,” the nature of the “disturbance” itself and the cause of the “disturbance” did not appear in either the DPS press releases or the subsequent stories cited above, though the press release did include a provocative quote from Hawaii Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda that hinted at the root cause which all the stories included: “We make no secret of the fact that our facilities are overcrowded,” Espinda said in the Apr. 29 news release. “Our correctional staff immediately went into action to de-escalate the situation, maintaining constant control despite the overcrowded conditions in that module. They go through extensive crisis response training, they were prepared, and I couldn’t be more proud of them for a job well done.” According to the DPS press release, the module that experienced today’s “disturbance” has a double-cell capacity of 48 inmates, yet the current headcount is nearly double that at 81. Prison overcrowding is a nationwide
problem, given our society’s desire to lock up massive numbers of its own citizens (in California, it was even found to be unconstitutional). If that’s at least part of what caused today’s trouble at MCCC, then we should be asking why it doesn’t happen more often. The DPS press release also stated that prison officials are investigating the disturbance, but don’t expect to hear much more about it. Not only is there no timeline on when such an investigation would end, DPS Public Information Officer Toni Schwartz told me, but the final report won’t be a public document. “All investigations are considered confidential for security reasons as well as possible legal and disciplinary action,” Schwartz said. When I followed up, asking if the DPS would announce anything once their investigation was over, Schwartz didn’t offer much hope. “We will evaluate if we can release information once we determine the cause of the disturbance and the investigation is completed,” she said. “It will depend on if there is pending legal action.”
decade. Yes, kids: it looks like the battle over the future of the county hospitals–including Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC)–may have finally ended (which, to be fair, was more exciting than Saturday night’s Mayweather-Pacquiao bout). On May 1, the state House of Representatives and Senate passed HB 1075 CD1, a compromise bill that will allow Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (the unusual sort-of public entity that runs Maui County hospitals) to pair up with a private and/or nonprofit hospital. The reason? Tens of millions of dollars in annual deficits (and a lack of appropriations from the state) that had prompted hospital officials to threaten draconian cuts to services and staff. Seriously, people have nightmares over fights like this. People tend to take hospitals and healthcare very seriously, and it’s terrifying that budget disagreements could remove a lot of care options from

a small community like Maui County. An earlier version of the bill was expected to pass, but Gov. David Ige (backed by powerful public employee unions that opposed the measure) then stepped in and called for a conference committee to thrash out a new compromise. A May 1 news release from the House Com-

vided in fiscal year 2014. Transitioned facilities will also be eligible to apply for Capital Improvement Project (CIP) funds for up to the first 10 years.” Legislators expect Ige to sign the bill into law, but they’re taking no chances. Even Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui, who I would think could just knock on Ige’s door, took the trouble to issue a formal statement calling on the governor to sign the bill. “Now that the Legislature has passed House Bill 1075, I am urging Governor Ige to expedite the process so that Maui Memorial Medical Center can find the right partner,” Tsutsui said in his statement, which he also sent out on May 1. “With the hospital facing a $28 million budget deficit, time is of the essence in preventing cuts in health care services and jobs.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

The Fairmont Kea Lani honored Earth Day this year by sponsoring a community reef cleanup through Trilogy Excursion’s Blue‘aina Program. The event also included a $1,000 donation to Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP). More than 50 Maui residents and visitors came together on April 22–joining Trilogy crew volunteers, representatives from the MFBRP and members of the resort’s Sustainability Team to SCUBA, snorkel and free dive for rubbish. The group retrieved harmful marine debris, including fishing line and discarded plastic from the ocean floor off the coast of West Maui. The reef cleanup was part of Trilogy’s Blue‘aina program, which sponsors the resources to clean a different Maui reef each month. Employees passionate about protecting the ocean environment launched the program in 2010. Blue‘aina incorporates citizen science, education and philanthropy among community members, local businesses and organizations. “We’re very proud to work with Trilogy Excursions and Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project to clean one of Maui’s coral reefs,” said Charles Head, General Manager of the Fairmont Kea Lani. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact we can have on our ocean environment when likeminded businesses join forces with Maui’s community. We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Earth Day!” During the excursion, Fairmont Hawaii’s Sustainability Team presented a cash donation of $1,000 to the MFBRP in support of the ongoing efforts to recover and restore the habitats of Maui’s endangered birds. As part of the ongoing partnership, guests of Fairmont Kea Lani may purchase plush birds at the resort gift shop with a portion of the
proceeds supporting the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project’s conservation efforts. The Fairmont Kea Lani has more than 50 sustainability initiatives in place, according to the resort. Last year, the resort launched a new partnership with Clean The World, a nonprofit organization that recycles partially used bath amenities for donation to impoverished countries suffering from disease and infection. The hotel also invested in a new laundry water recycling system, ecomode thermostats for guest rooms, compostable disposable containers and low-flow shower heads and toilets. The competition was open to graduating high school seniors from Maui County. The Best in Show honor was awarded to Eui Yol Lee, who received a $1,000 scholarship for the piece “Chase Your Dreams, You Might Catch One.” The piece also earned the Podge Elvenstar 1st Place Drawing $500 award. The Haruto “Harry” Furuta 1st Place Mixed Media $500 Award went to Levi Holley’s piece “Goldfish;” the Martin Rockwell 1st Place Painting $500 award was given to Erin Manibog for “My Brother’s March.” LAA’s 1st Place Photography $500 Award went to Teak McAfees; and the 1st Place 3D $500 award went Victoria Rose Griffith. Lahaina Arts Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing county youth with access to creative arts through education and artistic opportunities. LAA offers no-cost art classes

News Of The Weird MARITAL ENHANCEMENT
We Like You Too!
Saudi Arabia’s very first sex accessory shop (in the holy city of Mecca) should be opening soon, according to news reports–operated by a Moroccan Muslim, backed by the German adult mega-retailer Beate Uhse, and supposedly fully compliant with Islamic law. Owner Abdelaziz Aouragh told Agence France-Presse he would stock 18 different Islam-appropriate toys for married couples, along with oils and fragrances that he said would enhance the marital experience. (He did not actually describe the toys, but ruled out U.S. mainstays such as inflatable dolls and vibrators.) One such “halal” sex shop opened in Turkey in 2013, and Aouragh’s financial partner runs a similar enterprise online.

The February gun-and-baby-carrying workshop in Johnston, Iowa, was so successful that instructor Melody Lauer and CrossRoads Shooting Sports owner Tom Hudson plan more. Lauer insisted that she does not necessarily encourage a baby-holding mother to arm herself, but if she chooses to, safety would of course require that she be familiar with the tricky procedure of drawing, aiming and firing even though she might be “wearing” a baby in a sling in front of her body. Hudson, noting the fast-growing market of gun sales to women, said scheduling the workshop “was a no-brainer.”
EVEN OUR GANGS ARE DIVERSE What’s believed to be America’s only hardnosed “gang” composed only of gay and transgendered African-Americans hopes to have its story told soon by filmmakers–who emphasize the group’s transition from fighters to entrepreneurs working to establish their own clothing line, according to a March report on advocate.com. The gang, originally organized for protection (“We gonna get our respect one way or another,” said one), hails from the violent Washington, D.C., Trinidad neighborhood, yet some of the 200 members (in their teens or early 20s) insist on stilettos, lipstick and mascara (while carrying knives, brass knuckles and mace).
QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS Pioneering British facial surgeon Ninian Peckitt, 63, facing a Medical Practitioners Tribunal in Manchester in April, was accused by a witness of “repeatedly” having punched one patient in the face during a procedure in order to straighten a fracture. Dr. Peckitt acknowledged having used his hands to “manipulate” bones in the patient’s face, calling it a routine surgery-avoiding procedure sometimes required for extensive injuries.

Two airport screeners at Denver International collaborated in an ongoing ploy in which one, a male, signaled to a female
colleague that he had spotted an attractive male passenger in line that he might like to grope. The female would then suddenly notice an “anomaly” in the screening and ask that passenger to stand aside so the male agent could “inspect” him further–by genital and posterior fondling (over his clothing). The two agents were fired in February after a Transportation Security Administration investigator, having been alerted to the scheme, observed it in action.
INEXPLICABLE Mohammed Almarri, 21, was arrested on multiple charges in Tampa on April 12 after illegally entering a neighbor’s apartment in a high-rise and forcing the owner onto the balcony. For reasons undisclosed in the police report, Almarri then allegedly microwaved the man’s wallet in his oven. And Joseph Williams, 35 (and with several pending warrants), was arrested on April 5 in Fort Pierce, Florida, after entering the emergency room at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute, demanding an enema and refusing to leave until he got one.
LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS In the face of jokes about proliferating airline charges, the British economy line easyJet added another fee recently. If easyJet, on its own, cancels a flight, it charges a fee of 10 British pounds (about $15) to notify third parties. The airline said that even though its own decision created the issue, it must nonetheless cover its costs to provide cancellation notices to passengers who miss connections or who need to provide verification to collect on private travel-interruption insurance.
IS THIS A GREAT COUNTRY OR WHAT? Counting only the pool of bonus money (not regular salaries), employees of New York securities industries in 2014 earned roughly twice as much as the total income paid to all employees in the United States who worked full time at the federal minimum wage ($7.25 an hour). (The statistic, from a report by the Institute for Policy Studies and reinforced by a University of Michigan professor using figures from the New York State Comptroller and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was featured in a March New York Times analysis.)
WAIT WHAT? In April, a court in Munich, Germany, ordered a dentist (identified only as “K”) to pay the equivalent of about $21,000 to patient “Alex S” for pulling all of his teeth (19) over four weeks of treatments–as the remedy for his schizophrenia and erectile dysfunction. The dentist had testified that Alex had too much bone inflammation for ordinary fillings. K made his own claim for the equivalent of about $54,000 for the damage to his professional reputation that the trial had caused, but the court rejected it. ■

a client’s energy, he creates a look that brings who she is on the inside to reflect in her look on the outside. Each client’s personal power and inner beauty are enhanced through his unique methods. What are you eating? How are you exercising? Who and what are in your surroundings? How do you take responsibility for the energy you bring? Yamaguchi visits Olavine Spa four times a year and is available for booking transformational makeovers.
My philosophy is that wellness is a journey and not a destination. There are so many elements to wellness and when you read through the Spa Montage Kapalua Bay treatment menu. You’re taken on a journey of wellness traditions from the Hawaiian culture to a holistic pallet of spa therapies to create an innovated “Montage” of exceptional healthy living. The Art of Spa is unique and exclusive to Spa Montage, this hydrotherapy ritual will help detoxify your body, provide a deep sense of relaxation, immunity boost, energy renewal, assist in a good night’s rest and the perfect cure to jet lag. 1. Warm your body in any one of the following heating elements–eucalyptus steam room, cedar wood sauna or cascading waterfall whirlpool. This increases your heart rate and gets your blood flowing freely throughout your body (10-20 minutes). 2. Cool down in our refreshing bamboo rainfall showers. This will create a natural body pump, pushing the blood from the extremities into the core. Lymph, which is linked to the body’s immune system, is also moved during this process (20-45 seconds).

3. Finally, relax and let your body rest to allow your heart rate to lower to a normal resting rate (10 minutes). The following ritual is recommended to be completed three times. The Art of Spa is complimentary to all guests receiving a spa service of $100 or more as is a signature offering from all the Spa Montages.
“Train the mind, the body will follow.” There’s no separation between the mind and body. I work with the clients’ ideas and beliefs about themselves, while training the body. Slowing down, breathing, feeling and listening the body is what creates transformational experiences for our clients. For a transformation, indulge in any form of meditation, labyrinth walking, deep relaxation and or breath work offering. I indulge on most days on my own. Mindfulness meditation with music is a great pathway to transforming yourself. Mindfulness meditation technique encourages the practitioner to observe wandering thoughts as they drift through the mind.
treatments, healthy meals and exercise regimens. Our wellness expert, Dr. Mark Emerson, will create a personalized program using i-Lipo laser treatments in conjunction with a formulated exercise program and meal planning with fresh, local and nutritious produce to manifest a successful weight loss and body re-contouring journey.

Emily Grace Esthetics, Haiku, 808-575-2222 Emilygraceesthetics.com This is a private day spa by appointment only. For a transformation, I would first check into what kind of change the client is going through. It’s always nice to check in and see if the client wants to talk about what they’re dealing with before the treatment starts. Sometimes, clients come in with an already established bad mood, so it’s my determination to make them feel better with my service. With that in mind, I would usually recommend one of my several facial treatments that have a lasting effect–the Collagen Therapy treatment or the Botinal Lifting treatment. Those particular treatments are close to an hour and a half, and there are a lot of massage and herbal essences. There’s a lot of extra time for the client to zone out and go within. The skin is left feeling plumped and trans-

The intention isn’t to get involved with the thoughts or to judge them, but simply to be aware of each mental note as it arises. This form of meditation is actually much easier than it sounds. The wonderful bonus of this practice–meditating with music–is that the process, the journey itself, is highly pleasant. Every step of the way you’re bathing yourself in uplifting sounds and music, balancing and healing your heart, mind and spirit. For other kinds of body transformations, a “diet free life” is the only way. Diets do not work. Eat real food that’s clean and organic (if possible), indulge at times and live your life. What works is learning what your relationship is with food and working on your beliefs about it. You can eat anything you want if you understand how to eat it, when to eat it and why you’re eating it.
I fell in love with acupuncture in 2007. Chinese medicine struck me as true, responsible, genuine healing. I wanted to make people feel really good the natural way. I also needed a tool for the emotional component of physical disease (or “dis-ease”) and for that I found PSYCH-K. For someone ready and willing to make change, I recommend the BodyWise program. BodyWise is a 16-hour gentle intervention to identify emotional triggers, neutralize painful memories, release addictions and manifest anything you want in your life.
Pat Makozak formed, and my client is relaxed. For another kind of transformation, I have a new favorite product: the Gm Collin marine collagen firming cream. It’s amazing. It’s made with collagen derived from organic sea algae, so it’s not an animal byproduct. It’s this lightweight moisturizer that’s firming on the skin and diminishes fine lines. Love it! Smells amazing, too. The queen bee honey line makes an amazing absolute rose toner. Besides it being wonderful and balancing for the skin, spritzing it for scent and aromatherapy has a wonderful effect for positive well-being. It’s a must have, too.

It shows the skill and flexibility of the technicians in being able to get the guest right. Treatment protocols are only a road map to direct the therapist from point A to point B, but how they get there should be through partnership with their guest. I would expect that experience to be distinctly guest-to-guest, based on their individual needs. “Wellness Your Way” is a customizable program that includes energy-focused and transformative

cate our system to function at a more conscious level. Integral to one’s personal healing journey is time to spend in quiet reflection in an environment that’s healing to our bodies and our minds. I like the quote by Parker Palmer: “Self care is never a selfish act. It is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have. The gift I was put on Earth to offer others. Anytime we can listen to true self, and give it the care it requires, we do so not only for ourselves, but also for the many others whose lives we touch.”

Engaging in active and passive movement creates the best platform for change. Participating in a yoga or pilates session and then treating yourself to a luxurious body treatment or your favorite massage is the perfect combination. Traditional Lomi Lomi always works for me because of the flowing nature of the strokes and the spiritual essence that’s present during the session. There’s a pure intention that allows for transformation to occur.

Sarah Hisey Spa Director Spa Helani, a Heavenly Spa, Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas The Ocean Ritual by Thalgo is a sensory aquatic journey, with a European influence, just added to our spa menu. Microdermabrasion is a great transformational treatment. In microdermabrasion, a diamond tip applied to the skin to gently remove the outer layer of your skin. It’s basically an exfoliation and skin rejuvenation procedure that leaves skin looking softer and brighter. A series of six is most effective. Another transformational treatment is the collagen infusion facial. A highly concentrated medical grade organic collagen hydrates and heals the skin. It uses the Collagenizer, a special machine made in Italy that uses your skin’s water-based intercellular channels to promote transdermal delivery. The Collagenizer uses a continuous low polarity current that allows the macromolecules of the collagen to be delivered into the skin. This polarity opens and closes the transdermal water channels in the skin, delivering the Collagen to the deeper layers, resulting is lifted and firmer, hydrated skin. point of a guest’s stay or spa visit is reflected through its six pillars of wellness: Sleep Well; Eat Well; Feel Well; Move Well; Play Well; and Work Well. At The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, these include superbly-appointed Westin Workout center open 24 hours and innovative fitness classes (promoting the MOVE WELL pillar) to refreshingly unique and indigenous spa services. The resort’s full-service spa was also the first Westin-branded Heavenly Spa to open 11 years ago and has led to more Heavenly Spas established worldwide. Pamper Me in Paradise body treatment offered at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa. My personal favorite spa transformation is the new HydraFacial with Dermabuilder add-on, recently introduced at Westin Maui’s Heavenly Spa. I try to squeeze in this treatment at least twice a month. The 25-minute HydraFacial is an excellent choice for all skin types and conditions such as sun damage, hyper-pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, oily and acne-prone skin and aging skin.
Sharon Ogawa Spa Director, Spa Grande, Grand Wailea Grandwailea.com/spagrande I’ve always loved to share the touch of healing (massage) with friends and family, from a young age. I took a massage therapy course after college, for personal growth, and fell in love with the industry. I began as a Spa Host/Attendant, and moved up from there, traveling the world working in and opening up spas. Water therapy is central to the wellness journey for every guest. The personalized touches and unique experiences that we offer focus on bringing the guest to a sense of personal renewal through moments of pampering, introspection and therapy. The self-heating charcoal and citrus notes are perfect for someone who wants to feel their new self and take on the world. Black and white transformation starts with a full-body application of the activated charcoal masque. Your body is then enveloped in a cocoon and steamed to purge impurities, increase fluid circulation and stimulate lymphatic system detoxification. It’s fin-
ished with a white kaolin clay face masque. For a subtle shift, I would recommend our Essence of Olena and Awa, which has a soothing ritual and protocol that helps to cleanse the body and soothe the mind–a perfect blend for those who have a moment of pause before starting on a new journey. Its a three-in-one treatment, combining full-body exfoliation, heated cocoon and Hawaiian lomilomi massage. Using ingredients indigenous to Hawaii, this treatment alleviates soreness and stiffness in muscles. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more coverage, visit: mauitime.com/news/health

2015 Summer Movie Preview Or, the return of Mad Max, Terminator, Mission Impossible, Poltergeist and Jurassic Park Byrne are out but Lin Shaye returns as the psychic with the ability to travel to... The Further. The Good: The original creative team behind this horror series remains on board. The PG-13 rating doesn’t matter when your movie is bloodless but still terrifying. The Bad: “The Darkest Chapter Yet” tagline seems more like an apology for how different this will be from the first two. Opens after the Poltergeist remake. JURASSIC WORLD (opens June 12)
Hey, that car's almost paid off!
O
ne of the biggest summer movie seasons in memory is about to unspool. Of course, the report from last year wasn’t encouraging. Despite the blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, box office was down and the movies were mostly a bust. But this year, the long line of blockbusters-to-be–even the sequels and remakes–are more promising and diverse than last year. The worst thing about movies like Minions, Pixels and Ted 2 is that they’re likely to be huge hits, regardless of quality. Also, I’m not writing about Ant-Man or The Fantastic Four, both of which I’m expecting will bomb, though I could be wrong. After all, I didn’t think that movie with Rocket Raccoon and Starlord was going to work, either. Here are the 10 I’m looking forward to the most: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (opens May 15) The Gist: Australian director George Miller returns for the fourth Mad Max adventure, this one starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. The Good: With Mad Miller at the helm, an epic-length shoot and a faithful return to the source, this looks to be an event for film fans, summer movie buffs and genre enthusiasts. The Bad: Hardy is terrific but Mel Gibson is Mad Max. The replacement may not fully go over. Will it be too weird for mainstream audiences and play more a cult movie than a summer attraction? TOMORROWLAND (opens May 22) The Gist: Brad Bird’s top-secret sci-fi fantasy starring George Clooney. Based on the Disneyland theme park attraction. The Good: After The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible-
Ghost Protocol, Bird is a consistently dazzling filmmaker. That poetic teaser trailer promises great things. The Bad: Can a movie based on the Space Mountain ride really be all that good? Instead of what’s-it-about, we should be asking why Clooney is doing a Disney movie. POLTERGEIST (opens May 22) The Gist: a Sam Raimi-produced remake of the Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg classic horror film. The Good: Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie Dewitt star. The source material has been duplicated often but still provides a scary blueprint. Appears to be aiming for the bigscares-over-gore approach of the 1982 film. The Bad: The trailer stinks. Gill Keenan directed Monster House, an animated children’s film, which doesn’t make him an obvious choice for an actual horror movie. The original is likely unmatchable. ALOHA (opens May 29)
The Gist: Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard battle genetically modified dinos on the newly opened park. The Good: The summer movie to beat. Filmed in Hawaii, the cast includes Vincent D’Onofrio, Judy Greer and a returning B.D. Wong. Looks as thrilling as the original but has even more star power. The Bad: Colin Trevorrow made the small, clever comedy Safety Not Guaranteed. Even with Steven Spielberg as producer, Trevorrow has a lot to juggle for his second movie. TERMINATOR GENISYS (opens July 1) The Gist: a reconfiguring of “The Terminator,” with Arnold Schwarzenegger back as an aging (!) cyborg who protects Sarah Conner from a liquid metal assassin. The Good: The directors made Thor: The Dark World and the cast includes J.K. Simmons, Jason Clarke and Jai Courtney. The screenplay has been praised for being clever and not a simple re-boot. The Bad: As intriguing as this looks, the trailers haven’t been helping. Is Clarke playing John Conner really a step up from Christian Bale?
TRAINWRECK (opens July 17) The Gist: Judd Apatow directs this Amy Schumer-starring comedy, based on her original screenplay. The Good: Had an early, well-received preview screening at the SXSW film fest, which shows confidence. Closer to Apatow’s Knocked Up than his dark, divisive Funny People. Bill Hader co-stars. The Bad: Schumer’s stand-up is confessional and hilarious but can she carry a movie? If audiences don’t find her endearing, this could be her first and last starring role. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION (opens July 31) The Gist: Tom Cruise is back, yet again, as IMF team leader Ethan Hunt. Christopher McQuarrie directs. The Good: One of the few franchises that appears to be picking up steam a few sequels in. Cruise again performs insanely dangerous stunts. Everyone now: Your mission, should you choose to accept it... The Bad: This series showcased filmmaking wizards Brian De Palma and John Woo, and up-and-comers J.J. Abrams and Brad Bird. McQuarrie directed Cruise’s Jack Reacher and is an untested underdog. STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON (opens August 14) The Gist: The story of N.W.A., the groundbreaking rap group that gave us Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Eazy-E. The Good: F. Gary Gray, who directed Cube in Friday, is the perfect filmmaker for this. The story is incredible and everyone from Paul Giamatti to Dean Cameron are in the cast. The Bad: The leads, playing the young versions of the group, are untested unknowns. If they can’t convey the charisma and danger of their real-life counterparts, this will go straight to the five dollar bin. ■
The Gist: Cameron Crowe’s Hawaii-set romantic comedy stars Bradley Cooper as a military contractor who reconnects with his ex (Rachel McAdams) and falls hard for his new colleague (Emma Stone). The Good: The cast includes Bill Murray, Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski. Crowe is in full rom-com mode. His love for Hawaii and second chances is all over this one. The Bad: Shot two years ago, it looks endearing but overstuffed, like Crowe’s Elizabethtown. Will he keep it under two hours? Can he balance multiple characters, a whimsical tone and stick the landing? INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 (opens June 5) The Gist: Patrick Wilson and Rose
Nice shot of California when Schwarzenegger left office

Horoscope
Sign Language TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Expect hidden but powerful allies this week. Don’t expect them to show their faces, though. They’re secret supporters, the kind who anonymously dump money into your bank account or send thugs to “help” your ex-boyfriend move out, finally. Play a big game; you’re officially a badass now. You can get away with wild moves that would’ve laid you out a few weeks ago. But don’t talk shit. If it gets back to the string-pullers that you’re taking them for granted or abusing their patronage for your own petty agenda, you’ll have that comfy safety net ripped out from under you, fast. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
I’ve encountered numerous Geminis recently, all complaining about their bad (and worsening) astrological reps. It seems you now receive more (undeserved) badmouthing than those traditionally maligned Scorpios. People are unduly alarmed by your changeability, or perversely, frustrated when you’re too reliable or predictable. Screw their fickle crappiness. It bites when nothing you do will please your detractors. But it also frees you. If you can do naught but wrong in their eyes, why bother trying to do “right”? This week, do exactly as you please, without giving the slightest thought to what others might think of you as a result. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
To deny you chances to exercise your ability to love would be like denying the necessity of food. You need to love people as much as you need to eat. It’s important that you are allowed to, especially this week. To stifle those urges could really screw you up, and leave you feeling starved and nutritionallydeprived for months or years to come. Don’t subject yourself (or those who crave your affection) to that kind of suffering. Instead, remind the people who need it that there’s an abundance of love, not a shortage, and that you’re going to do your honest-togoodness best to make sure they get their fair share. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
I’d like to inoculate you against fear. Normally, I’d do this by giving you a long, wet, wonderful French kiss. Obviously, that’s not logistically possible at the moment. Luckily, you can acquire your own vaccine. Here’s how: Say yes to everything this week. Whenever you encounter an internal no, find the person or thing that will push or encourage you into making that a yes. There’s your cure. The bottom line is: there’s nothing you can’t handle. If you stop short of taking something on, the only conclusion I can draw: you’re stopping short of your full potential. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Stir shit up. I mean really get down to it, Virgo. Screw with every idea you have about yourself. If that means having your best girlfriend strap on a dildo and bang you up the ass, then by all means, do it. Enough with the namby-pamby bullshit of change by imperceptible increments. Turn your world on its head, because that’s what it’s going to take to get to the place you want to be, which is about half a planet away from where you are right now. Or, screw it, go ahead and keep taking the baby steps you’ve been taking; you ought to reach your destination by the time you turn 105.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Mary Poppins, you’re not. Some would regard you as absolutely the worst influence children could be exposed to. I beg to differ. You get kids in a way they don’t, being practically a child yourself. You know that the young’uns like people who tell it to them straight, without a lot of sugarcoating, or, especially, lying. Even if that means giving them the low-down on death, sex, or how screwed up the whole damn world is, they’d generally prefer that to some fluffy story about Santa Claus. Be the truth-teller this week, to children of all ages. We need to hear it the (hopeful) way that only you can tell it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Quit your job. Hop on a plane and head to Greece, or Australia, or Uganda. Oh wait, you’ve done that, more than once, even. That’s your anti-horoscope this week. Even though springtime is painting the world rosy and making the idea of adventuring in it almost irresistibly appealing, remember that the deeper truth of your ambition requires that you be stable right now, not flaky and whimsical. Don’t worry, my undomesticated and curious friend. There’ll be time for more wild, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants adventures in your future. For now, keep your pants on and your feet firmly on the ground.
tattoos by Rachel G
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
The solution to many computer problems is to do a clean-install of the operating system: wipe out the hard drive and start fresh. I wish we could do that to your brain; you’ve got tons of great stuff in there, but it’s currently eclipsed by system glitches and hang-ups that are getting in the way of what you really want to do. Consequently, you’ve been recently subject to frequent crashes and freezes, just like a sick computer. Do your best to strip your mind down to its essentials this week. Rebuild your priorities, from most to least important. Don’t stop grinding out internal conflicts until clarity is achieved. Then reorder your life to conform to those intentions, and don’t let anything stop you. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
How do you inspire such loyalty? You’re not the most popular guy or gal around, but your handful of friends would do anything for you, and defend you tooth and nail. I know how you do it, but I just wanted to remind you, because it seems you may have forgotten. You got to this solid place by doing exactly the right thing, over and over, even when it was really hard. (Also, in case you’ve blanked on this, too: the “right thing” isn’t what society or your folks or anyone else tells you it is. It’s what you know it is, even if that’s totally different than what they’re telling you.)

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Biding your time is all well and good. It can even be pleasant. But enough is enough. Stop postponing pleasure, or revenge, or whatever it is that you’re waiting for. You’ll look back on this time in misery and regret if you keep wasting it the way you have been. There’s so much you can and should be doing right now that is just on hold for the indefinite future. What’s the point? Figure out if your patience has any viable hope of not being in vain, and quickly; it’s nearly time to take action, or simply move on for good. Consider this your one week warning.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
I never appreciated the phrase, “war on terror.” If the battle was truly intended to conquer fear itself, I’d be a wholehearted supporter. Instead, it seems that certain small-minded forces are hell-bent on a task that even small children call ill-fated and impossible: eliminating all potential sources of terror. Here’s a simple concept: As long as people have freedom, they will be free to hurt each other. Eliminate that freedom, and what’s the point of life? It galls me that this uncomplicated notion is beyond the feeble grasp of the people who are supposed to be leading us. Luckily, you get it. This week, give those around you less reason to harm each other, not less opportunity to do so. Why? Because you can.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
People will show you surprising depths if you give them a chance. The problem is, you don’t. Your famous stubbornness, which is a pillar of strength and reliability for those who’ve made the cut, is a wall to those who haven’t—some of whom really deserve to. It’s unfortunate how important first impressions have become to you, because there are a few exceptional people who just don’t look good until the second hour you’ve spent in their company. I’m not suggesting you let just any old schmuck who knocks into your house. But I am suggesting that you let them, you know, call you.
