UH REGENTS APPROVE FOSSIL FUEL DIVESTMENT

The University of Hawaii Board of Regents has decided that since combatting the effects of climate change is more important than possible economic profit, the school’s $66 million endowment should no longer invest in companies that produce fossil fuels, the university said in a May 21 statement posted online. “The board approached its discussion on divestment with the spirit of collaboration,” said Regents Chairperson Randy Moore in the statement. “The divestment task group was comprised of faculty, students, administrators and board members. The result was a superb collaborative effort and the final outcome represented the best of shared governance.” In a House of Representatives news release made public at roughly the same time as the UH announcement, Rep. Chris Lee, a Democrat from Kailua who chairs the House Energy and Environmental Protection Committee, applauded the regents’ move: “I commend the UH Board of Regents on leading by example and looking out for the interests of local residents,” he said in the statement. “Hawaii is already spending millions to save our eroding beaches and diminishing fresh water supply from growing climate changes. It’s important we not raise costs to taxpayers by investing in fossil fuels that add to the problem, and instead invest in clean alternatives that can be equally profitable. It is not only the right thing to do, but, together with the Legislature’s decision to move the state toward 100 percent renewable energy by 2045, puts Hawaii in the forefront of nationwide efforts to move toward greater reliance on renewable and sustainability energy resources.” Spearheaded in part by the 350 movement, fossil fuel divestment has grown in popularity across university campuses. “When you invest your money, you might buy stocks, bonds, or other invest-

ments that generate income for you,” states the activist website GoFossilFree.org. “Universities (and colleges in the US), religious organizations, retirement funds, and other institutions put billions in these same kinds of investments to generate income to help them run. Fossil fuel investments are a risk for both investors and the planet, so we’re calling on institutions to divest from these companies.” Whether divestment works on a financial as opposed to just a moral level remains controversial. If you go to the website Divestmentfacts.com–which opposes divestment in fossil fuel stocks and is funded by the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA)–you’ll find this quote from University of Chicago Law School Professor Daniel Fischel: “Every bit of economic and quantitative evidence available to us today shows that the only entities punished under a fossil-fuel divestment regime are the schools actually doing the divesting—with virtually no discernible impact on the targeted companies.” Of course, in February 2015 Forbes reported that the IPAA also funded Fischel’s research on divestment. Officials with 350 also dispute Fischel’s findings, according to Forbes. “Report after report has shown that divestment would not increase portfolio

Access to the island of Kaho‘olawe could potentially end if the commission that oversees the island doesn’t raise $100,000 by June 15. To raise the money, the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) has created an online GoFundMe campaign. “If we do not reach the $100K mark, the Reserve will be closed down–all resultant of this year’s legislative results,” KIRC spokesperson Kelly McHugh said in a May 19 email. The news caught me by surprise. Yes, SB 897–which would have allowed the KIRC to conduct “limited revenue-generating activities” on Kaho’olawe–died in committee

$2 million for the KIRC. Well, sort of, McHugh told me this morning by phone. She explained that the $2 million is actually two $1 million appropriations, for Fiscal Years 2016-17 and 2017-18, respectively. “We’ve never pointedly asked the community for donations,” McHugh told me by phone this morning. “We always thought it was the responsibility of the state [to provide the KIRC with money]. But now we have to. We have to show we have the backing of the community. With the $1 million figure, as it stands now, we can’t afford to keep the island open.” McHugh added that the $100,000 figure came from her boss, KIRC executive director Michael Naho‘opi‘i. She said legislators had asked the KIRC to create budgets at a variety of different funding levels, including $100,000. She said that the KIRC decided that if they could raise $100,000, then that would be sufficient funds to show legislators that the community values Kahoolawe restoration as well as sustain the KIRC until the

Legislature’s mid-session in November. The campaign began on May 15. At press time, the GoFundMe campaign has raised $10.594 from 108 individuals. The campaign closes on June 15, 2015. “Kaho‘olawe is for all of us: students, teachers, researchers, botanists, biologists, mechanics, carpenters, cultural practitioners, families and more–from all walks of life,” states the GoFundMe campaign website. “Together, we have embarked on the largest restoration effort on the planet. Only by demonstrating that our community values the historical, cultural, ecological and community building resources shared through the Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve can we continue this work.” For more information or to donate money, visit GoFundme.com/AlohaKahoolawe2015. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

Ocean Vodka’s unique new bottle design has received an international packaging award. The new bottle, described as a contemporary expression of the ancient hand blown glass fishing net float, received the renowned Silver A’ Design Award in the A’ Packaging Design Competition’s packaging design category. The A’ Packaging Design Competition, based in Italy, aims to highlight the excellent qualifications of best packaging designs and greatest packaging design concepts worldwide. Ocean unveiled its new bottle design across the state in September of 2014; the new bottle was released on the Mainland in January. Ocean CEO Shay Smith said the company redesigned its packaging because the vodka’s original standard straight-wall stock bottle did not convey the brand position or unique properties of the product, which is made using deep ocean mineral water as a blending ingredient. “With the oceans covering 71 percent of our planet’s surface, the neck of the [new] bottle is angled to mimic the Earth’s axis with a disproportionate amount of glass

A proposal to increase fees to Haleakala National Park has been approved by the National Park Service. Beginning on June 1, daily park fees will increase incrementally over the next three years; the new fee structure was designed to meet national standards for parks with similar visitor amenities. The per-person fee will go up in two-tothree dollar increments per year. The current rate of $5 per-person will raise to $12 in 2017. The motorcycle fee will go from $5 to $20 by 2017; the motorcycle fee will go up in $5 annual increases. The per-vehicle pass will also be raised in $5 increments from the current price of $10 to $25 in 2017. The tri-park annual pass, considered by many to be a “locals” pass, will remain at the current rate of $25 in 2015 and 2016, and then increase to $30 in 2017. The tri-park annual pass permits unlimited entry into Haleakala National Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will implement the same fee changes as Haleakala National Park. The park proposed a $30 fee for the tri-park annual pass instead of the national standard of $50, based on public input. In 2014, from mid-October through mid-December 2014, a public comment period on the proposed fee increase was held. Comments were gathered via a variety of channels including at visitor centers; on-

line; via postal mail and email; and at two public meetings, one in Hana and one in Pukalani. The park received 58 comments fully supportive of the proposed increases; 23 supportive comments if the fees were phased in or lowered; 56 comments opposed to any fee increase; and 16 miscellaneous comments. The park modified the proposed fee structure based on this input. The modified proposal was approved by national fee managers in Washington. Since 1997, fee revenues have funded $36.6 million in Haleakala National Park projects. Some past examples of work include: $2.75 million of improved visitor amenities in Kipahulu (new restrooms, potable water, new parking lot); restoring trails throughout the park ($500,000 annually); and completing archeological surveys ($499,500 in 2010). Entrance fees also supported the control of invasive species ($299,000, in 2013); stabilization of Silversword populations ($60,000 annually, 2012-13); and restoration of native landscapes ($113,000 in 2013).

the plans to be–at least–paused. According to an April 8 Hawaii Real Estate Blog post, employees were expected to pay $1.50 per exit; a full-time employee working five days a week would spend a minimum of $30 per month. A store clerk at The Shops told MauiTime that they are continuing to gather signatures from those opposed to paid parking. “I don’t want to pay money in order to make money,” the clerk, who identified herself only as Amy, told us. The real estate blog said tenants will have to pay an estimated fee, from $.50– $1, to validate cards for customers; store tenants do not have to participate in the validation program. But for those who do, a minimum purchase may be required; and the minimum purchase may vary per store. Published reports say the parking cost to the public will be either $3 per half hour, or $6 per half hour; $42 for all day. Amy said there is a bigger picture involved in the planned paid parking situation. “They are trying to sell the whole center,” she said. “If they can increase revenue, the bottom line will look more appealing to potential buyers.” Posts for automated kiosks have been installed but the parking plan has not yet been implemented. Calls to the Shops’ management office have not been returned.

Among the requirements of “Visual Arts 104A” at the University of California, San Diego is that, for the final exam, students would make a presentation while nude, in a darkened room. Professor Ricardo Dominguez (who would also be nude for the finals) told KGTV in May that a nude “gesture” was indeed required (and disclosed to students in the first class) as a “performance of self,” a “standard canvas for performance art and body art.” After an inquiry by KGTV, the department chairman announced that nakedness would not be required for course credit–even though professor Dominguez said in his 11 years teaching the course, no student had ever complained before.

Sapearya Sao, then 25 and sober that night in 2013 in Portland, Oregon, was rammed by a drunk hit-and-run driver (Nathan Wisbeck), who later rammed another drunk driver–but Sao finds himself defending the lawsuit by the two people injured in Wisbeck’s second collision. Sao recently settled the lawsuit brought by that second drunk driver, but still faces a $9.8 million lawsuit brought by the estate of the second drunk driver’s late passenger, which argues that if Sao had not pursued Wisbeck in an attempt to identify him, the second crash would not have occurred. (Of course, that crash also might not have occurred if the second driver–0.11 blood alcohol–had been sober.)

WAIT WHAT? British forensic scientist Dr. Brooke Magnanti, 39, has written two best-selling books and inspired a TV series based on her life, but she recently filed a lawsuit accusing her ex-boyfriend of libeling her–by telling people that she was NOT formerly a prostitute. A major part of Magnanti’s biography is how she paid for university studies through prostitution–which has supposedly enhanced her marketability.

MURDER CONTRACT LAW Murder “contracts” are ubiquitous in novels and movies, but an actual murder contract cannot be enforced in American courts. However, a recent “contract” case in Norway (according to the Norwegian newspaper Varden, as reported on Vice. com) came down hard on a hit man who got cold feet. The hit man, who stalled repeatedly, was finally sued by the payer, who won a jury verdict (later set aside) for the unrequited killing. Then, because the hit man had attempted to extort even more money from the payer (to find a substitute killer), the hit man was fined the equivalent of $1,200.

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT About three-fourths of the 1,580 IRS workers found to have deliberately attempted to evade federal income tax during the last 10 years have nonetheless retained their jobs, according to a May report by the agency’s inspector general. Some even

received promotions and performance bonuses (although an internal rule, adopted last year, now forbids such bonuses to one adjudged to owe back taxes).

LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES The long-time swingers’ club in Nashville, Tennessee (The Social Club), is seeking to relocate to the trendy Madison neighborhood–but near two churches and an upscale private Christian school in a state that bars sex businesses within 1,000 feet of a church or school. The Social Club’s preferred solution: re-open as the United Fellowship Center and attempt to hold services on Sunday mornings, converting, for example, its “dungeon room” into the “choir room.” While courts are reluctant to examine religious doctrine, they often judge cases on “sincerity of belief.” (Any shrieks of “Oh, God!” “Oh, God!” coming from the on-premises swing club are not expected to carry weight with the judges.)

WHAT A COUNTRY! Lightly regulated investors’ “hedge funds” (the province of wealthy people and large institutions) failed in 2014 (for the sixth straight year) to outearn ordinary stock index funds following the S&P 500. However, at hedge funds, underperformance seems unpunishable–as the top 25 fund managers still collectively earned $11.62 billion in fees and salaries (an average of over $464 million each). The bestpaid hedge fund manager earned $1.3 billion–more than 48 times what the highestpaid major league baseball player earned.

BRIGHT IDEAS Body cameras for police officers is yesterday’s news. At the Sanmenxia canyon rapids in China’s Henan province, the issue is body cameras for lifeguards. The allfemale White Swan Women’s Rafting Rescue Team has complained recently about swimmers deliberately throwing themselves into the water so they could scream for help–in order to fondle the women when they arrived to save them. Attaching cameras to the women’s helmets and legs is expected to deter perverts.

LEAST COMPETENT SNAKE Owner Aaron Rouse was feeding his python, Winston, a tasty rat in May, using barbecue tongs, when Winston got hold of the tongs and would not let go. Rouse, of Adelaide, Australia, decided not to engage in a tug-of-war, but when he returned (believing Winston would see no food value in the metal clamps), the tongs had been swallowed and were halfway through the snake’s comically bloated body. After taking X-rays (that of course became Internet attractions), a veterinarian at Adelaide University removed the tongs by surgery. ■

SUMMER

GUIDE By Jen Russo There are so many ways to enjoy your summer days on Maui. Yes, the island will be slammed with visitors, but the days are also long enough for all of us to take a moment to enjoy what Maui has to offer. Here’s a selection of tours by land, air and sea that you can take on your own, with friends, or recommend to others looking for ways to spend their days this summer.

LAND

Maui Brewing Company Their newest Kihei facility is a gorgeous, cutting-edge brewing machine. A trip behind the back doors of the tasting room will run you just $5, and it includes a flight of their flagship beers. The tours run about 40 minutes, and because it’s a rambunctious operation, expect things to be running full speed ahead in the brewing facility. You’ll get to see and smell where the beer is brewing, check out the packaging, peek at the lab where yeast strains are kept and finally drink the beer made right there at the end of the tour, which takes place in the tasting room. That room also offers 30 taps of beer, all made on the premises. There’s also a rotation of food trucks from 11am to 9pm and live music most evenings at

A self-guided walking tour is a serene way to spend an afternoon. If you prefer narration, several island gardens and farms offer them, if you give them fair warning. Or you can hop aboard the Maui Country Farm Tour bus that will guide you through the scenic drive and sights along the way. You can also choose to tour botanical gardens or even a goat farm. Some experiences offer food to taste, while others offer collections of native plants or fruits; either way, you’re guided on your own two feet. The recent trend towards locally crafted brews and spirits hasn’t been lost on Maui. Tasting rooms and tours are all the rage now. Visits to these locally crafted liquors present a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at what it

takes to produce Maui-made beer and grog, a fast growing industry in our county.

AIR

Taking flight over Maui in helicopter will give you a perspective you might never have thought possible. You never really see so much of the island, and the unexplored mountain regions that are only visible from the air will blow your mind. Riding in a helicopter may be a once in a life event, or you may find that you like to take to the sky like a bird. The sensation of taking off in a helicopter is

very different than a plane, and you’ll likely find that you can hover over mountains and right next to sea cliffs. If you love hard-to-find waterfalls, this may be the best way to see them all. Maverick Helicopters just completed a million-dollar build-out at their Kahului Helipad headquarters. Their building has an outdoor area with waterfalls, a climate controlled interior, comfy leather couches and gift shop. The company hails from the Las Vegas, Nevada area. They’ve been flying guests to the Grand Canyon and over the Strip for many years, but this is their first venture outside the Southwest. Maverick

Maverick Helicopter Tours

currently flies more than 200,000 guests annually and operates 47 Airbus EC130 ECO-Star helicopters in total. For now, they’ve based three of those birds in Kahului. They comfortably seat four people in the back and four up front, including the pilot. Inside, you’re surrounded by headto-toe windows. I was able to fly Maverick to Molokai earlier this month, a route I hadn’t seen offered by helicopter before. There was some heavy cloud cover, so it wasn’t safe for us to fly directly over the West Maui Mountains or the Molokai range. Nevertheless, we zoomed up and over ridges, seeing waterfalls and lush mountainsides that we’d never see otherwise. Deep in Halawa Valley and over on Molokai’s sharp sea cliffs, we witnessed Mother Nature’s best kept secrets. Since we hit the clouds, our pilot offered a bird’s eye view of shipwreck beach on Lanai. We also flew over the gorgeous rock formations in Kahakuloa, Honokahau and Honolua Valleys, then got a grand view of Lahaina, Olowalu and the windmills. Our pilot made sure each of the passengers saw all the vantage points, even flying back around if we missed anything. Visibility through these big windows was good enough to take plenty of photos, but if you missed anything, you can purchase DVDs of your trip after you return to Kahului. They also let you take pictures with the pilot as you board and exit the copter. Maverick offers three tours: the

Maui Dream–a full island excursion–at $399/person; the Molokai Voyage– which covers West Maui and Molokai– for $369/person; and the Maui Spirit adventure–which highlights Haleakala and Hana–for $329/person. Exclusive charters are also available by request. To book a tour, visit FlyMaverick.com/ Maui or call 800-978-0266. Air Maui Helicopter Tours Tours include Hana, Haleakala, West Maui and Molokai. SEA

I’m always up for adventure on the high seas. Of course, by “high seas” I mean the relatively calm ocean surrounding Maui. One of the easiest and most rewarding trips to incorporate into your busy schedule is an evening sunset cruise or sail. The Kai Kanani leaving off the beach in Makena offers a oncea-month Capische? Sunset Cruise with Chef Christopher Kulis. There are really great advantages to having a rock star chef, like fancy pupus, surf and turf and paired wines. The menu and offerings are seasonal–the chef says he usually does a fresh salad, crudo and fish

Kai Kanani Sunset Sail

dish–but really, he changes it up every time. The Kai Kanani does their sunset sail trip every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with check-ins at 4:30pm. If you’re not on the monthly Capische? trip, there’s still a terrific spread with champagne, beer and cocktails. The impressive 65-foot luxury catamaran picks you up on the shore fronting the Makena Golf and Beach Resort, so wear something you don’t mind getting wet. They’ll give you big plastic bags to put around your own totes so they stay dry. As soon as you’re aboard, the captain briefs you on boat safety. Then it’s full steam ahead–the party starts with charcuterie pupus of cheese, salami and mortadella while you sip prosecco or one of their beers on tap. They also offer other cocktails and wines, but don’t expect any red wine (no one wants to scrub that off the boat’s white deck). The Kai Kanani has the distinction of being the only beachlaunched catamaran in Makena, and they also offer a couple snorkeling trips to Molokini, since it just takes them 15 minutes to get there. But I wasn’t interested in snorkeling when I went aboard. It was a windy day for my sunset cruise, but the

catamaran ride was still very smooth. As we cruised toward Wailea, Chef Kulis was busy whipping up dishes like a farro and summer squash salad and ahi crudo with sliced caper berries and peppers. Kulis says cooking on board can be tricky, so some of his courses like the pesto shells with pepitas come pre-cooked. But for the surf and turf opakapaka dish with Kula veggies and short rib ragu, he panfried the fish on a hot plate in the galley. Bruddah Dwight played music while the sun settled near the horizon. After the last dessert dish of S’mores in a jar was finished, we were just about back to the Makena Golf and Beach Resort. The Kai Kanani picks up resort passengers in the Wailea area for its boat trips, and a number of guests were getting back that way. To see the different charters available or book one for yourself, call 808-879-7218 or go to Kaikanani.com.

We talk story with comedian Brian Regan about David Letterman, donut sprinkles and his upcoming show at the MACC

Thinking about donut sprinkles

B

rian Regan is set to make Comedy Central history this year with the live broadcast in September of his stand-up show at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Earlier this month, Regan performed his 28th stand-up performance on Late Night with David Letterman. Regan’s comedy embraces the goofy and human side of life. We caught up with Regan before his cross-country flight to Maui–for his upcoming show at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center–to see how he keeps his flavor of comedy fresh. MAUITIME: Have you been to Maui before? Is there anything you are looking forward to doing while here in the islands? BRIAN REGAN: I’ve been to Hawaii a few times in my life. The last couple times I stayed in Maui. This trip, I’ll be staying with my kids near Honolulu and flying over for the Maui show. I’m looking forward to it! MT: Congratulations on your first live stand-up comedy show on Comedy Central. BR: Thanks! MT: How did you score that gig? Do you consider yourself cutting edge when it comes to reaching audiences on television? BR: I’ve never done Radio City Music Hall and I’ve never done a live special. So this is a pretty cool double whammy. I’m glad Comedy Central is in my corner on this one. Not sure if I’m really “cutting edge.” Many comedians consider themselves to be cutting edge. But why do we have to use the knife for the analogy. Let’s use the spoon. I like to consider myself the big bowl-like area of the spoon that holds all the stuff you like. MT: Why is it you hit it off with Dave Letterman so well? Now that he’s retired, will we still be seeing you on late night TV?

BR: I’m truly honored that Dave Letterman and the entire show was into my comedy over so many years. Now that his legendary run in television is over, I’m not sure yet where I’ll end up doing TV spots. MT: Are there comedians you like to watch? Who are they? BR: There are many comedians I like. The danger in listing some names is that you leave out others just as good. But I was always a fan of Steve Martin’s standup. And I certainly think Jerry Seinfeld is very good for the world of comedy. MT: Do you naturally see humor around you at all times? What is the process for you as you develop your act? BR: I don’t always see humor in things. Especially when I smash my pinky toe into a coffee table leg in the middle of the night. But sometimes I’ll see things, or experience things, that make me go, “Huh, maybe that’s a bit.” MT: How do you keep evolving your comedy so it stays relevant? BR: Relevance is kind of a weird thing. If one does topical material, it makes sense to want to be relevant. But if someone talks about donut sprinkles, it’s not quite as important. Unless the U.S. Supreme Court makes a decision outlawing donut sprinkles. MT: How do you keep comedy interesting for yourself? BR: I keep changing. It always feels better when the comedy is fresh. MT: You don’t have much of a potty mouth in your stand-up act. Do you have to work to keep that kind of content out of your show? Why have you embraced this style of comedy? BR: My comedy has always been kind of clean, I guess. It’s not because I’m Johnny Wholesome or anything–it’s just that I like that kind of comedy. Plus, I don’t know any dirty words except for dadburnit! MT: Does Brian Regan use cuss words in real life? How about interviews? BR: Hell no, I don’t cuss in real life! And it would be super shitty if I cussed in interviews! ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

'Tomorrowland' This isn’t the Space Mountain movie you were hoping for ★★★★★ Rated PG / 130 Min.

C

onsidering the years-long shroud of secrecy surrounding Brad Bird’s film, I’ll respectfully tip-toe around the specifics of the story. We meet a teen girl (Britt Robertson) who finds a pin that magically transports her to the futuristic, science-minded utopia of Tomorrowland. While seeking to learn the pin’s origins, she finds herself pursued by laser gun-touting villains and encounters a reclusive scientist (George Clooney) who may hold the key not only to where Tomorrowland exists, but why. The visual effects are beautiful, the production is impressive (everything from the sets to the costumes are top notch) and the film’s overall message is wonderful. Michael Giacchino’s score is among his best and everyone in the cast gives it their all. Clooney looks dashing wearing a jet pack and excels playing a hybrid of Mr. Wizard and Harrison Ford. Robertson is plucky and adorable in the lead and

manages not to get upstaged by all the mayhem that ensues. I agree with the film’s insistence that cynicism, indifference and acceptance of a doomsday scenario is preventing mankind from pursuing the possibilities and alternate outcomes available in science. Rather than simply wait for Armageddon, how about taking action and figuring out a way to sustain and enrich both the planet and the human experience? It’s a refreshingly optimistic point, one that the movie botches by bludgeoning us with it again and again. Rather than trust the audience to grasp and be moved by what the film is saying, the characters are constantly reiterating what’s already been said. A scene in a sci-fi nostalgia store is the first instance where the film really steps wrong. The shop is wall-to-wall with varying movie memorabilia and Star Wars merchandise (yes, Disney, we haven’t forgotten what movie you have coming out in December). You can sense the filmmakers are relying on commercialized nostalgia to carry the scene. Then Keegan Michael-Key and Kathryn Hahn show up, funny but

I always thought the future would have more legumes

hammy in weird turns. A laser shootout takes place, the store explodes and I started wondering who the filmmakers imagined were watching their movie. Whenever Tomorrowland starts building momentum, it pauses for a lengthy dialogue exchange. The insistence on talky exposition makes the pace stop-and-start. With many scenes of headless robots and (bloodless) laser battles, it struck me that this is likely too intense and long-winded for

young children. I have reservations about giving Tomorrowland two stars, since it includes some fine moments and a solid point to make (even if that point looks like a glossy commercial in the closing moments). I loved the opening scenes, set in an impressive recreation of the World’s Fair. But at the end, I left unsatisfied, hoping that someone will still make a real Space Mountain movie. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

My friends and I like to imagine that at least 80% of the population is composed of androids. How else to explain the apathy most people exhibit, and sullen maintenance of the status quo? Where’s the drive to achieve, to create, to be vivid, exciting, beautiful, to make a mark on the world? Most people are not only satisfied with being “normal” and average, they actively seek this state. Obviously, they’re factory-created, and their inability to wildly, uncontrollably express their individuality is simply a symptom of having none to speak of. This week, prove you’re not an android, if you can. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Constructing an astrological map to navigate your week is nigh unto impossible. You’re all over the place. Luckily, that’s often just how you like it. How else can you make use of your diverse range of abilities and touch base with your friends and compatriots from all walks of life? Sorry, I can’t tell you whether this week will be full of blessings or shit. Probably it’ll have plenty of both, along with disasters, miracles, opportunities, disappointments, love, failure to love, misery, ecstasy, and so on. In other words, you’ve got a lot going on right now, so you probably don’t have much time to read about it anyway. Go live it instead.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Your latest lover knows they can’t keep you. Whenever they imagine the possibility, they’ve got the specter of your museum of past lovers, their faces, hopes, and dreams captured in wax. So instead of taking a long view in which you end up together still, years from now, they start to wonder how you’ll remember them once you’ve moved on. Maybe they’re simply not special enough to get to stay in your life forever and ever. Sucks for them. But if they are, you’d better clue them in, and fast, before they make their mark and split for someone more ultimately have-able.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Your arsenal of weapons and coalition of allies is growing sparse. It might be time to assume a slightly lower profile, if your past actions still allow that. Going around screaming, “If you don’t wanna screw me, baby, then screw off!” might not be your best strategy this week. You’re a badass, and we all know it, but that punk attitude currently only makes you inaccessible, not admirable. Instead of being the biggest, heaviest warship around, be a cruise ship; in other words, start advertising ways that people can get on board, not get blasted to bits.

WED & FRI 7:30AM

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

It may be time for another little traipse around our tiny ball of mud. Leos are one of the fixed signs, so when you get stuck it can be pretty difficult to shake yourself loose. Sometimes a geographic displacement is enough to relieve any spiritual constipation you may have suffered along the way. I don’t mean tourism; visiting monuments and museums won’t do shit for you, not compared to visiting people’s houses, eating their food, talking about their lives, playing with their pets, getting drunk on their roofs, and having the visceral experience of stepping into a life that’s different than your own. Sounds fun, no? Stop thinking it now; go do it instead.

Your comfort zone has grown increasingly narrow in recent years. In part, this is because you’ve become adept at navigating through life and controlling variables. However, as the abyss of fearful unknowables widens on either side of your chosen path, the prospect of change—especially dramatic change that leaves almost nothing salvageable from your old life—becomes increasingly unnerving and unlikely. Sure you can go on trundling along in the same comfortable rut you’ve carved out for yourself, the one that goes in a straight, predictable line from here to your death. But if you have any aspirations of hopping out of it and running wild, this would be a good week to do just that. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

You’d be horrified to discover that someone was in your home right now, sifting through your most personal belongings. At the same time, some small part of you would experience a moment of pride at how ordered, neat, and clean everything was. Take refuge in that feeling, because right now romance of any kind will feel like an unwelcome intruder into your heart, because it disrupts the ordered nature of your inner universe. However, I urge you not to call the cops and have it expelled. It belongs there, despite the mess it’s making.

Don’t be too hard on yourself for getting mired in these pits of muddy emotion. Remember that these little hollows of energy-sapping muck are much more manageable than the acres of emotional swampland you used to get trapped in. Also, notice that the chief source of your suffering, ironically, isn’t the mild depression or confusion you’re experiencing, it’s the self-recrimination you subject yourself to for not being able to immediately extricate yourself from it. Stop that. Please, when you get your boots get trapped in sucking mud, see how pointless it is to pull a foot free just so you can kick yourself.

120 HANA HWY • UPSTAIRS PAIATATTOOPARLOR.COM

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

In mere moments, a piano will fall on your head out of nowhere, or perhaps a safe. No wait, you’ll be surfing the internet and find all sorts of compromising pictures of yourself, or else your mom will discover them and have a heart attack and die. Luckily, none of these things is even remotely possible, which is why I’m having a chuckle at your expense; you’ve been going around all cringe-y and fearful, as if some really ugly shit was liable to hit the fan any second. Stop worrying; the angst is far worse than the consequences of anything you’re likely to experience this week. In order to get over it quickly, simply imagine the worst-case scenario right now. Accept it. See? It’s not so bad. Now you can actually get on with your life. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Your line of congratulators would be 23 miles long, if people could comprehend just how much you’ve achieved, or why it’s important to you. Unfortunately—and this is a frequent source of your loneliness— almost no one will ever quite get what motivates you, or why. However, that’s no reason to isolate yourself further. The lack of understanding about your weird inner world doesn’t reflect the levels of desire; many people would really, really like to get to know you. Let them, as much as possible, and if you see chances to clue them in to what’s going on in your most secret of hearts, please do so.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

All sorts of deals are being made in backrooms everywhere, on your behalf. Secret handshakes and subtle signals passed between dozens of intermediaries, are determining the kinds of opportunities you’ll be presented in your near future—and they’re damn cool. Only an idiot would pass these little nuggets of good fortune up, just because they don’t fit neatly into what he has planned for himself. Accept what is, not what you wish could or should be—especially when what is—once you give it a chance—is actually better than anything you’d imagined anyway. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Keep rewriting. Unfortunately the novelized version of your life you produced at age 15 no longer applies. The problem is clinging to your identity like it’s some static thing moving through time, when time is the illusion, marked only by the changing of your idea of self. In other words, it’s time for a totally new novel about the way your life is going to go, and don’t even bother referring to old versions as you write this one. You get it, don’t you? This is a process, not a product; by the time you’re finished figuring out four hundred pages of plans for yourself, it’ll be time to close this manuscript and start all over on the next one.
