GOV. IGE WANTS TMT CONSTRUCTION TO START AGAIN

Out of business

MANA MAGAZINE CLOSES

1. Accept its responsibility to do a better job in the future. 2. Formally and legally bind itself to the commitment that this is the last area on the mountain where a telescope project will be contemplated or sought. 3. Decommission–beginning this year–as many telescopes as possible with at least 25 percent of all telescopes gone by the time TMT is ready for operation. 4. Restart the EIS process for the university’s lease extension and conduct a full cultural impact assessment as part of that process. 5. Move expeditiously the access rules that significantly limit and put conditions on non-cultural access to the mountain. 6. Require training in the cultural aspects of the mountain and how to be respectful to the cultural areas for anyone going on the mountain. PHOTO COURTESY TMT OBSERVATORY CORPORATION

Here’s yet another sad story for people who read in Hawaii. Mana Magazine, a magazine dedicated to all things Hawaiian culture that’s only about three years old, is closing, its parent company Pacific Basin Communications said on May 26. “As is the case with most publications, our ability to sustain MANA is done so by the support of our community through subscription dollars, advertising dollars and sponsorship dollars,” says a statement on the closing, posted online at the Mana Magazine website. “Sadly, after more than 3 years, the amount of support that we needed to keep MANA afloat did not emerge. For this reason, we have made the difficult decision that our next issue of MANA, June/July, will be our last, and we will be in touch with our subscribers soon.” I wish I could say this surprised me. Mana, though a wonderful, colorful magazine filled with fascinating stories about a variety of issues involving Hawaii and Hawaiians, was originally a print magazine. But late last year, they scrapped their print publication and went digital-only. Though the Mana website still offered numerous stories for free (and a few ads here and there), subscribers could see the actual magazine itself using a digital viewer. At the time, a spokesman for Mana told me that going digital-only was a positive development for the magazine. “In fact, some of the cost savings from the printing of MANA may be allocated into creating more rich content for our readers,” magazine spokesman Cedric Duarte emailed me back in August 2014. “As with any media outlet, financial considerations come into play for any making any business decision. Subscriptions have grown at a steady pace and we’ve have [sic] tremendous sell though at various newsstands throughout the state.” Editor Christine Hitt–who’s only worked for Mana for a couple months–declined comment on the closing, saying only that a “business decision” led to the end of

the magazine (the June/July issue, Mana’s last, was also Hitt’s first issue as editor). She referred me to the official statement cited above and to Pacific Basin Communications President Scott Schumaker. Schumaker explained that Mana simply couldn’t raise enough money–either through subscriptions or advertising–to continue publishing. Their strategy of producing a native digital publication, website and newsletters, then publicizing and expanding it all through social media, simply couldn’t lead to increased revenue. “The move to digital-only was a heartfelt attempt to have Mana reach a larger audience,” Schumaker told me by phone. “We wanted to show the importance of our indigenous culture to everyone, and make it accessible to all. But now the financials no longer support digital. There just were not enough people willing to pay to subscribe or buy ads. We were very successful in the product we created, from both our minimal staff and the freelancers who supported us along the way.” Schumaker said Mana’s digital issues will remain for sale in smartphone newsstands. Pacific Basin Communications also owns a variety of other publications in Hawaii, including Hawaii Business, Hawaii Magazine, Hawaii Buyer’s Guide, Hawaii Home + Remodeling and Honolulu Magazine.

On the afternoon of May 26, Hawaii Governor David Ige announced at a news conference his “way forward” for the University of Hawaii’s proposed Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) atop Mauna Kea on the Big Island. “My review found that the TMT project took the appropriate steps and received the approvals needed to move forward,” Ige said at the news conference, according to a statement his office sent out on this afternoon. “The project has the right to proceed with construction, and the state will support and enforce its right to do so. We also acknowledge the right to protest this activity. We will protect the right to a peaceful protest and will act to ensure public safety and the right to use our roads for lawful purposes.” While Ige expressed support for the TMT, he also pointed out where he felt the University of Hawaii had gone wrong. “The University of Hawaii must do a better job in its stewardship of the mountain,”

Ige’s statement on TMT construction also laid out 10 actions he wanted the University of Hawaii to do in regards to the telescope:

Back in business?

he said at today’s news conference, according to a May 26 Civil Beat article on Ige’s decision. “From my own personal experience on the mountain, with all the noise and crowding, I could not feel the same feeling that I felt on the summit 20 years ago.”

7. Substantially reduce the length of its request for a lease extension from the Board of Land and Natural Resources. 8. Voluntarily return to full DLNR jurisdiction all lands (over 10,000 acres) not specifically needed for astronomy. 9. Ensure full use of its scheduled telescope time.

Overheard “You need a cat to pee on your jewelry.” -Woman at Maui Brew Co. in Kihei, May 30

10. Make a good faith effort to revisit the issue of payments by the existing telescope now as well as requiring it in the new lease. When construction would resume isn’t known, as the project has also been challenged in the courts. Ige said he’d abide by the ruling, according to the news release from his office. You can read the full text of Ige’s comments on the TMT at Governor.hawaii.gov. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Red alert!

MAUI HAS NEW EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM

-Anthony Pignataro

CAROLINE ABSALOM CROWNED MRS. HAWAII A woman from Maui has won the 2015 Mrs. Hawaii pageant. On May 31, Mrs. Maui Caroline Absalom took the crown of Mrs. Hawaii.

The pageant, which has been around for about four decades, took place at the Neil S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. Contestants had to take part in a private interview with the judges, swimsuit competition and evening gown competition. “I’m still waking up after the shock,” Absalom said. “I’m just happy that an ‘Outer Island Girl’ finally won! Maui is representing Hawaii nationally! I’m going to ask the director today when’s the last time Maui won Mrs Hawaii… I think 20 or so years? This is all so surreal.” A few minutes later, Absalom messaged me to say that, in fact, it’s been 25 years since a woman from Maui won the pageant. “Apparently I’m the first Mrs. Maui to be crowned Mrs. Hawaii!” she said. “I mean, I’m sure people from Maui have won in the past, but I’m definitely the first ‘Mrs. Maui’” Absalom, who grew up on Maui, works for MediSpa Maui in Kihei as well as KAOI. She’s married to longtime Maui radio personality John Absalom (Johnny A), the subject of our May 21 Memorial Day cover story. Absalom was also the first runner-up in the 2014 Mrs. Hawaii pageant. For Absalom, the next step will be the Mrs. America pageant, which will take place on Sept. 26 in Sevastopol–located in the Crimea on the Black Sea. The U.S. apparently hosted the Mrs. Russia pageant 25 years ago, and now it’s time for Russia to return the favor.

The Mayor’s office is urging Maui County residents to sign up for “Maka‘ala,” Maui County Civil Defense’s new Emergency Alert System. With tropical storms already forming in the beginning of this 2015 Pacific hurricane season, residents are “strongly” encouraged to be prepared for storm systems that are predicted to form this year. One good way to be prepared is to registered with Maka‘ala, which allows Maui Civil Defense officials to create customized messages for residents who signed up for it. Once signed up, emergency alerts can be sent directly to your mobile devices or personal computers; if a subscriber does not have an electronic device, Maui Civil Defense will call your home phone, but only during “warning” level events such as a flash-flood warnings or hurricane warnings. “Maka’ala translated from Hawaiian means to be alert, aware and vigilant and we want residents to be just that,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa. “We have had a number of tropical storms, hurricanes, tsunamis and other emergency events hit Maui County in recent years, and Maka’ala notifications will allow people to watch out for the next emergency event and hopefully enable them to stay out of harm’s way.” Maui County Emergency Management Officer Anna Foust said that along with putting together an emergency kit and having an evacuation plan, residents should sign up for the Maka‘ala updates as a way to stay prepared. “The Maka‘ala notifications will enable us to create targeted public messages, which will better serve us during times of emergency,” Foust said. “For example, if we have to evacuate all Kahului residents living in the tsunami inundation zone, all Kahului residents who

have signed up for the Maka‘ala service who are in that particular area will be geo-coded and receive a message letting them know how much time they have to get to higher ground. “This will enable residents to be alerted sooner, which could possibly save lives by giving them more time to react,” Foust noted. “Our Civil Defense staff will be working hard to urge as many Maui residents as possible to sign up for these new emergency alerts.” A sample message during an emergency to Maka‘ala users could read: “You are in a tsunami inundation zone and will need to evacuate the area by ___ time. Your nearest emergency shelter is located at ___.” To sign up for the Maka‘ala Emergency Alert System online, visit the Maui County website at Mauicounty.gov, click on the “Emergency Preparedness” tab on the left then click on “Maka’ala–Maui County Emergency Alert System.” Residents who do not have a computer or other electronic device may call the Maui County Civil Defense Office at 808-270-7285 and ask to be signed up over the phone. Additionally, volunteers will be taking signups at the Maui County Disaster Preparedness Expo on Saturday, June 6, 2015 from 10am to 2pm at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Shopping Center. For more information, call Maui County Civil Defense at 808-270-7285 or via email: civildefense@mauicounty.gov.

“I look forward to returning to Maui Tomorrow to build upon the impressive accomplishments of Irene Bowie and our Board of Directors,” Perez said in a May 28 news release. “The quality of our environment and our quality of life are closely related. Maui Tomorrow will continue to play a key role in advocating for the protection of both.” According to the news release, Perez is a Hawaii native. His LinkedIn page states that he currently works as a renewable energy analyst for Good Energy Hawaii in Honolulu. He earned a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Hawaii’s Manoa campus. He’s also worked at the State of Hawaii Office of Coastal Zone Management, the Washington State Department of Transportation and the County of Maui. In the past he’s volunteered for or served on the board of the environmental advocacy groups Sierra Club Hawaii, Wilderness Society and Life of the Land. From 1989 to 1992, Perez also served as a co-director for Maui Tomorrow itself. “We are very pleased to announce this appointment,” said Judith Michaels, President of the Maui Tomorrow Board of Directors, in the news release. “Albert will bring leadership and creativity, as well as a sense of history, to Maui Tomorrow’s programs. He has a breadth of perspective and experience in the government, private and non-profit sectors, and has a demonstrated commitment to protecting the ‘aina.”

News Of The Weird CRIME DOES PAY When officials in Richmond, California, learned in 2009 that 70 percent of the city’s murders and firearms assaults were directly linked to 17 people, they decided on a bold program: to pay off those 17 to behave themselves. For a budget of about $1.2 million a year, the program offers individual coaching, health care coverage and several hundred dollars a month in stipends to former thugs who stick to their “life map” of personal goals and conflict-resolution training. According to an April report on National Public Radio’s This American Life, Richmond is no longer among the most dangerous towns in America, with the murder rate in fact having fallen from its all-time yearly high of 62 to 11 last year.

BABOON CRIME Mohamed Nafiu was arrested in Lagos, Nigeria, in April and charged with robbery after he and his pet baboon intercepted a pedestrian leaving a bank and frightened him into fleeing, leaving his money behind. Police said the versatile baboon had also previously snatched victims’ valuables.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE One might believe that a 6th-grader, suspended for a whole year after school officials found a “marijuana” leaf in his backpack, might be immediately un-suspended if authorities (after three field tests) found the leaf was neither marijuana nor anything else illegal. Not, however, at Bedford Middle School in Roanoke, Virginia, whose officials said they had acted on gossip that students called the leaf “marijuana,” and therefore under the state schools’ “look-alike-drug” policy, the 6thgrader was just as guilty as if the leaf were real. Formerly a high-achiever student, he has, since last September, suffered panic attacks and is under the care of a pediatric psychiatrist, and his parents filed a federal lawsuit in February.

THE RESEARCHER’S JOB Biologist Regine Gries of Canada’s Simon Fraser University devotes every Saturday to letting about 5,000 bed bugs suck blood from her arm–part of research by Gries and her biologisthusband Gerhard to develop a pheromonebased “trap” that can lure the bugs from infested habitats like bedding. (She estimates having been bitten 200,000 times since the research began, according to a May Wired magazine report.) Regine holds each mesh-topped jar of bugs against her arm for about 10 minutes each (which Gerhard cannot do because he is allergic)–leading, of course, to hours of itchiness and swelling in the name of progress.

CONTINUING CRISIS The three gentle grammar pedants (one an environmental lawyer calling himself “Agente Punto Final,” i.e., “Agent Period”) devoted to ridding Quito, Ecuador, of poorly written street graffiti, have been patrolling the capital since November 2014, identifying misplaced commas and other atrocities and making sneaky corrective raids with spray paint. Punto Final told The Washington Post in March that

he acts out of “moral obligation”–that “punctuation matters, commas matter, accents matter.” As police take vandalism seriously in Quito, the three must act stealthily, in hoodies and ski masks, with one always standing lookout.

SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED Almost half of the DNA collected from a broad swath of the New York City subway system matched no known organism, and less than 1 percent was human. Weill Cornell Medical College researchers announced in February that they had identified much DNA by swabbing passenger car and station surfaces, finding abundant matches to beetles and flies (and even traces of inactive anthrax and bubonic plague) but that since so few organisms have been fully DNA-”sequenced,” there was no cause for alarm. The lead researcher fondly compared the bacteria-teeming subway to a “rain forest,” deserving “awe and wonder” that “there are all these species” that so far cause humans relatively little harm.

LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES “I’m doing what God wants,” Mike Holpin, 56, told British TV’s Channel 5 in April. “In the Bible, God says go forth and multiply,” said the unemployed former carny who claims to have fathered at least 40 children (now aged from 3 to 37) by 20 different women. Holpin has been married three times, and lives with his fiancee Diane and two kids in the Welsh town of Cwm. “I [will] never stop,” Holpin said. “I’m as fertile as sin...”

UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS It takes only four of the U.S. Supreme Court justices to accept a case for review, but it takes five to stay an execution. On January 23, the Court accepted the case challenging Oklahoma’s death penalty chemicals, but the lead challenger, Charles Warner, lacking that fifth “stay” vote, had been executed eight days earlier (using the challenged chemicals), during the time the justices were deliberating. (The case, Warner vs. Gross, was immediately renamed Glossip V. Gross, but Richard Glossip himself was scheduled to die on January 28. Then, without explanation, at least one other justice supplied Glossip’s missing fifth vote, and, with one day to spare, his execution was stayed until the challenge to the chemicals is resolved.)

FIRST THINGS FIRST A 21-year-old man in Hefei, China, collapsed in May after 14 straight days of Internet gaming, yet when paramedics revived him, the man begged them to leave and put him back in front of the screen. Then, two weeks later in Nanchang, China, a 24-year-old female gamer took only a minutes-long break at an Internet cafe, at 4am, to head to a rest room and give birth–returning with her bloodcovered baby in her arms to resume her place at the mouse pad. (London’s Daily Telegraph, reporting from Beijing in May, estimated that China has 24 million Internet “addicts.”) ■

Skin Deep Maui body painter Rachel Deboer competes on Game Show Network’s ‘Skin Wars.’ Is she Maui’s next reality TV star?

F

or artist Rach Rachel hel e Deboer, aart is all about skin. She’s She’s been be a body painter on Maui M ui for Ma f a while, but now she’s ’s hit hi the big time. This Wednesday, June 10, 10 at 9pm Eastern time, she’ll appear on the season premiere of Game Show NetN work’s second season of Skin Wars. DeD boer will be vying for the $100,000 prize with a dozen other body pain paint artists. Deboer has a successful body painting and face painting business on Maui, and is also commissioning commissionin her performance art in San Francisco. Francis “I had heard about Skin Wars and an watched it before, of course, because I am a body painter,” says Deboer. “One of the producers contacted me and told me about abo it. It just seemed like every day da someone would ask me, ‘Have ‘Hav you seen Skin Wars?’ Wheth Whether it was a body painter or a friend or boyfriend, people seemed to be mentioning iit a lot. It seemed like the uniuni for verse was picking me out fo this. Obviously, I had to audiaudi tion, show what I could do. It kept being pushed toward me like something I was meant to do.” Because the season hasn’t aired yet, Deboer couldn’t ssay much about what happens this season. But she did ssay a that the show pushed d her h er to paint fast. She also a ls lso says sa that she learned ed from the t judging experience. exx p erience. “Thee judges j udges give you yo feedback feed edb b ack about what they want to see, their the protocol, sort of what wha they are looking for,” forr,” she says. “It really reall ly is up to us to think nk out of the boxx as a s fast as you can n and a nd still give them the what they want. Then they see what you do and they will say, ‘Hey, ‘He you could work on on this, th you could tryy this th or I didn’t quite q ui uitt e get this.’” Judging Jud Ju d ging was tricky, Deboer says. “People can ca take it personally–it’s a hard thing to go through,” througg

she says. “When artists are putting themselves out there, they are putting out their heart and soul. When people judge you for that, you can take it the right way or the wrong way. So you have to do your best to separate yourself from it. You have to be able to say, ‘Oh yeah, ok, I do see that.’ I mean, you don’t always have to agree with what they say, but it doesn’t mean you can’t learn from it.”

Skin Wars was GSN’s biggest network hit in 2014, which was also the network’s 20th anniversary. At first, GSN was known for rerunning popular game shows like Family Feud. But in 2011, the network hired former Bravo and Oxygen exec Amy IntrocasoDavis as its programming head, marking a new era when the network would produce more of its own shows. Shows like the dating game Baggage with host Jerry Springer. Lie Detectors, Idiotest, American Bible Challenge and It Takes a Church were others, and they grew the network’s primarily female audience. Then came Skin Wars , which is now GSN’s most popular show. Like the myriad competitive cooking shows you find on the Food Network, Skin Wars whittles down a group of contestants in hopes of finding what the show’s producers describe as the “most skillful, accomplished and versatile body painter in America.” The winner also receives $100,000. “We are thrilled that young audiences tuned in to witness the astonishing work of these contestants,” Introcaso-Davis says in a September 2014 announcement on Deadline.com. “Skin Wars represents GSN’s commitment to celebrate artistry through skillbased competition, and we cannot wait for viewers to see what we have in store for them with Season 2.” Rebecca Romijn, the show’s host, is also an executive producer, along with Michael Levitt of Michael Levitt Productions and Jill Goularte. Judges Craig Tracy and Robin Slonina also serve as producers (the third judge is RuPaul). In the second season, they added two more artists to make a total of 12 contestants–six males and six females. For Deboer, her path to body painting also started with face painting, but she never had any formal art training (her degree is in drama). “My mom is a makeup artist,” says Deboer. “She would put makeup on me and

make me look ten years older and I loved this. I didn’t think I was very pretty as a young girl, and I know beauty comes from within. However, I used makeup to transform myself, and I liked what I saw–all the color. And then I started doing that to other people with face painting. I would do kid birthday parties, then I moved to Hawaii. I loved the joy I saw on peoples faces. Then I started going into body paint.” Deboer came in third at the World Body Painting Festival in Austria in 2008, which was especially gratifying. In fact, she almost didn’t compete at all. “I heard about the competition in Austria, and I thought, sure,” says Deboer. “I was going to go as a model but a friend of mine in Hawaii convinced me to go to compete. I thought, all right, I will go to compete as well. And I won third place. It was the first competition I ever entered and I placed in Europe. It was crazy. For me, that was a big message from the universe. This is something you can do well without having any formal art training. I poured my heart into my piece.” In 2012, Deboer returned to Austria and placed fifth in Black Light Bodypainting and eighth in Face Painting. “My advantage is I didn’t go to school for art,” she says. “Some people might say that is a disadvantage, but I say it’s my advantage. I have a real free-flowing feeling toward body painting and a very natural authentic love of it. I’m not trying to put any art rules on the body. Instead, I naturally paint what I feel about that person. Especially if I’m given an improv thing to do. I just feel that natural passion is an advantage overall, and as a human being in general.” There are many reasons why Skin Wars is so popular. But RuPaul is the first to admit that nudity is one of the biggest components in drawing in so many viewers. In an MSNBC interview with Romijn and RuPaul on News Nation, Romijn says that they still have to follow television rules about

nudity, so models wear pasties and thongs. But before the masterpieces are finished, you do catch glimpses of bare skin. RuPaul also gave some insight to his judging process. “We are looking at skill, technique, imagination but really I go for the emotional passion that each person has,” he says. “I love anyone who can become the realization of their own imagination. That is so fascinating to watch. These are starving artists who are vying for $100,000 so the stakes are very high. I am an emotional person. I like to be moved. I like color, beauty, freedom, music, art and it’s all about that.” Natalie Fletcher, the Season 1 winner from Bend, Oregon, says she worked a lot of jobs–muralist, cake decorator, screen printer, festival coordinator–while she was body painting but really didn’t make a living from it. She says if her job didn’t have a creative element, she wasn’t happy. She has taken her $100,000 prize money on the road. “Skin Wars affected me

in so many positive ways, and aside from winning, my life has completely changed,” she says. “I’m currently working on my dream project, traveling the states in a van painting two places in each state. I’ve done 53 out of 101 so far, and I’m heading your way at the end of the summer.” Fletcher has travelled the warm states first. Her specialty is body painted landscapes. She paints camouflage body paint jobs on local people in the areas she visits. Places like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, historical landmarks, old cathedrals, ruins, mountains, waterfalls, train tracks and lighthouses. She also returned to Skin Wars to paint Romijn’s body for a promo that’s airing on GSN. Later this summer, she’ll fly to the islands of Hawaii and Maui to work on pieces. You can see her work at Artbynataliefletcher.com. Body painting as an art is growing far beyond even the television show that celebrates it. Los Angeles just held its first competition–Body Fine Art–in the downtown arts district. You can now find painted bodies in photo spreads, music videos

and movies. For many of the artists, the practice of painting bodies extends beyond the brush to the metaphysical. “Body painting is never precious, so you’re more willing to experiment,” Nicolette Spear, one of the artists featured in Los Angeles’ Body Fine Art competition, told the LA Weekly last month. “I personally believe you’re illustrating the energetic pathways on the skin. In that way, the model’s spirit or personality is being expressed on the skin, which is in some ways more real than the skin itself.” For Rachel Deboer, there’s also a link forged between her and her models. She channels this by combining her love of body painting and theater by producing her own shows, burlesque theater and children’s Hawaiian Legend productions. “I have done a lot of study on body painting by different cultures around the world and different people,” says Deboer. “It’s an ancient thing–human beings and the rise and fall of different cultures and how people view their bodies. Should people of all body types be painted? And what does that mean? I say yes, because it’s not about the runway or fashion. It is about the basic human need of transformation and doing that at the hands of someone else. You build a bond with the artist and you become their vision. You create friendships that last forever. It goes beyond the body painting competition. I’m looking at it in large terminology. Art is a spiritual path. Skin Wars for me is part of my spiritual journey. That is the big message.”

Watch Rachel Deboer and eleven other artists compete this Wednesday, June 10 on Game Show Network (Channels 233, 71 on DirectTV, Channels 116, 9448 on Dish and Channel 435 on Oceanic/Time Warner). look killer, too. The Shrimp Mojo de Ajo is a platter of giant grilled shrimp with garlic–another one of Frida’s Favorites that will soon be yours. Frida’s also has splendid Baja fish tacos, battered and fried with jalapeno tartar. They also offer a selection of seasoned and braised carnitas, short rib, lamb and Chicken Tinga for tacos. The chile relleno and enchilada entrees are pretty popular, too. Sides like the Michoacan Zucchini and Mexican Creamed Corn are definitely worth a taste. Frida’s didn’t leave the bar out of their careful planning. Plenty of Mexican beer on tap–Corona, Negra Modelo, Dos Equis and Pacifico complement the Maui Brewing Co.’s local selections. The bar has more than 40 Tequilas, from organic to exotic, and plenty of tempting cocktails to try them

hen Mark and Judy Ellman embarked on their vision of a seaside Latin seafood restaurant, they chose an aesthetic that honored the late Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, a female cultural icon of the 20th century. Pictures of her adorn the walls at Frida’s Mexican Beach Cantina in Lahaina, and the azul of her family home La Casa Azul de is seen throughout the open-air dining room, as well as in the vibrant art inspired by her that hangs on the walls. Judy Ellman’s discerning style that designed the successful sister restaurants that sit next door, Honu Seafood and Pizza and Mala Ocean

Tavern, is recognizable at Frida’s as well. The gorgeous natural wood bar and Monkeypod tables join the magnificent outdoor ocean views, blue tile accents and hand-painted flowers on the old vault doors. In 1906, the building served as the Lahaina Bank, but lately it served as a sports retail store. The build-out to transform it into a custom artsy oceanside cantina took the Ellmans three years. They finally opened in February of this year. Mark says that the decision to do Latin seafood was nostalgic. He met his wife, Judy, while he was working in a Mexican restaurant. She was the bartender. The menu features several different raw and cooked seafood preparations all meant to capture the cuisine and flavors of Baja, Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta. The easy-going fresh style of Mexican cuisine gets Ellman’s

contemporary Hawaiian Regional touches and pops on the plate. Ceviche dominates the menu in a good way. If you’ve travelled to the coastal towns of Mexico, then you’ve probably experienced the extensive offerings of ceviche and coctel. Frida’s offers shrimp and oyster cocktails Puerta Vallarta style, full of plump seafood, tomato juice, cilantro, lime and avocado. There’s also Scallop Tiradito, Ceviche Tostada and baby calamari. The Ceviche Ahi Leche de Tigre was a surprising mix of lilikoi, purple sweet potato, hominy and cucumber. I wasn’t sure I’d like all those flavors together, but the textures and piquancy won me over. The menu starts off with antojitos– snacks or little bites. Soups, salads, chips and dips prevail here. I found the Abondigas–the ahi meatball soup– savory, spicy and unusual. In Mexico,

You and a baja fish taco should be sitting here...

and for a lot of Mexican American families, it’s a comfort food. Most of the time, you find Abondigas with beef and chorizo, but the change to ahi here is ideal. I was missing Alan Wong’s ahi meatballs from Amasia, but now this has filled that space. Every time I’ve eaten at Frida’s, I ordered a bowl, but there are plenty of other phenomenal antojitos like the Cheese Lovers Fundido, Chicken Tinga Flautas and Watermelon and Jicama Fresco Salad. Another unusual dish I can’t stop myself from devouring is the octopus entree found in “Frida’s Favorites.” Like all the other Frida’s Favorites, it’s served with warm tortillas and homemade cilantro rice and beans. The thick tendrils of Spanish octopus tentacles call to me every time, grilled and tender with spicy tomatillo salsa. Specials like the Fresh Fish Veracruz and Whole Fish Zarandeado

in–just sip your Anejo’s on their own. The Paloma is a refreshing grapefruitbased drink, or try the Chihuahua with jalapeno. The bar also has a selection of terrific wine with lots of Latin and Spanish options. There’s no better time to visit Frida’s than this week, as they’ve extended their kama’aina appreciation with 40 percent off food when you dine at the bar for another week. Frida’s opens at 11am for lunch, and then Happy Hour starts at 3pm and goes till 4:30pm. It includes 15 percent off all food, $5 draft beers and $9 specialty cocktails or $6 wells. Dinner starts at 4:30pm and goes until 9:30pm (except Sunday when closing is 9pm). ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Alexander Academy does 'Cinderella' SO WE TALK STORY WITH DANCERS HANNA CLAERBOUT AND NATE HUNT PHOTO COURTESY ALEXANDER ACADEMY PERFORMING COMPANY

ism and dedication are key components of creating a great dancer. Being vulnerable allows the dancer to connect to their movement and their fellow dancers, and thus being able for the audience to connect to the dancer. Being disciplined, respectful and punctual make other professionals want to work with you. Networking is extremely necessary in this field. Dance is hard. It’s a lot of work. So a dancer must be dedicated to their craft if they seriously want to make this a career. MT: Do you believe the saying that 10,000 hours can make anyone a pro?

Yeah, they look pretty wicked

T

he Alexander Academy Performing Company will be dancing a captivating rendering of Prokofiev’s Cinderella this weekend at Seabury Hall’s ‘A‘ali‘ikuhonua Creative Arts Center. The show will also present the talents of more than 150 dancers aged three to adult in contemporary, jazz and hip hop numbers. Cinderella will feature Hanna Claerbout and Laurel Bicker dancing the role of Cinderella, Jen Cox and Eliza Wright as the step-sisters, Nicole Yezzi as the stepmother and Ashley Krost and Giulia Salaparuta as the Fairy Godmother. Nathaniel Hunt returns to dance with the Academy as the Prince. “Our guest performer Nathaniel Hunt is our Prince Charming,” says Danelle Watson, the Alexander Academy’s director. “He performed with us last year in Swan Lake. We couldn’t have been more pleased with his professionalism, ability to connect and be such an inspiration to our students. He is a gem of a person as well as a dancer. We’re excited and fortunate to have him join us again.” Hunt graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in dance from Long Island University-Brooklyn, and has studied at the Ailey School, Earl Mosley’s Institute for the Arts and the Joffrey Ballet School. He’s presently dancing and touring the world with the Alvin Ailey II Company. We caught up with Hunt and Claerbout in a rare moment without their toe shoes to find out more about their upcoming performance... MAUITIME: When did you decide to become a dancer? How long have you been dancing?

NATE HUNT: I decided to become a professional dancer when I was in high school. I went to a regular public high school and my dance director Dianne Rosso gave me the opportunity to not only perform at the school but also choreograph

and teach my fellow peers. The utter bliss I got from working with students and performing alongside them is when I realized I wanted to make this my career. I have been dancing for as long as I can remember with my older sister but I started taking dance classes when I was about 12 years old. HANNA CLAERBOUT: I started dancing at age 10 but I think it was after playing Wendy in Peter Pan when I was 13 that I realized I wanted to be a dancer. I was so incredibly sad when the show was over, and that was when I realized if I became a dancer, I could perform more! MT: Do you plan to become a professional dancer? HC: Yes! NH: Absolutely! I’m currently a member of Ailey II, the second company to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. While I’m on break with the company, I’m a freelance teacher and guest performer. MT: How has dancing changed or shaped your life? NH: Dancing has allowed me to fully express my being to its fullest capacity. I feel the core of my being when I dance. The “I Am.” Dancing has helped me connect to my physical, emotional, mental and spiritual self. Not only has dancing shaped my life internally, but externally I’ve met some amazingly talented, artistic and beautiful people along my journey. MT: What kind of qualities do you believe create a great dancer? HC: Passion, technique, artistry, musicality... NH: I believe vulnerability, professional-

NH: I don’t necessarily believe so. Yes, the more time we spend of working on something (hopefully), the better we will become. However, it’s also ‘how’ we spend our time. If we’re conscientious of our body and our dancing while we’re taking class and training, that’s what really counts. We will do a million steps but we must work in the correct and conscious way to become better and more efficient. MT: Do you get stage fright? NH: Of course! Haha! It’s ok to feel that way. It’s natural to be anxious or nervous. It makes us human! HC: Nope. I cherish every moment I’m onstage. MT: What’s your favorite part of dancing? NH: Performing. Being able to travel to different places both internationally and domestically and share what I love doing is a dream come true. Performing for audiences who say that seeing dance gives them absolute hope is such a humbling and beautiful experience. It makes me appreciate my own performing and makes me realize that my dancing can affect so many people.

ticulously counted down weeks, days, hours until the day of the show. I realized in doing so that I had not been living fully in each moment because I was constantly thinking about the future. This year, I’ve focused more on the process and committing more to each day of rehearsing. NH: Cinderella is stress-free, although it may not seem like it! Haha! I have only two weeks to learn this ballet with A.A. where I have to learn a pas de deux, miming of scenes, and work with the corps de ballet. However, working with Hallie, Amelia and Danelle has been a joy. They know what they want, they are open for compromise and they enjoy what they are doing. MT: What’s unique about Alexander Academy compared to other dance companies? NH: There’s a community at Alexander Academy that I haven’t found anywhere else. It’s a place where adults and kids can dance together in a judgment-free environment. Similar to the aesthetic of Hawaii, Alexander Academy has a foundation of ohana. They care. The teachers dedicate their days coaching and teaching their students with information that’s technically efficient, anatomically correct and artistically challenging. The students care about one another. They care about one another’s growth as well as their own. To put it simply, Alexander Academy is a family like no other. HC: There are so many things I love about Alexander Academy. There’s a sense of community or a dancing ohana among the dancers and the teachers each hold a special place in my heart. The building and location itself is quite magical, too. In the late afternoon classes, sunlight pours in and lights the studio with a golden glow. Seeing the colors of the sunset while dancing is very inspiring. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

HC: So far, my favorite aspect of dancing is performing; to be able to share what I love with others. MT: Why is dance an important part of society and the arts? NH: Dancing is important because I believe society connects to movement more than any other communicative modality. Movement is the universal language. When a story is presented through movement, ideas, emotions and concepts can be more understood and appreciated. MT: How has your experience in Cinderella been different from other performances that you’ve done? HC: In previous performances, I me-

Film

by Barry Wurst II

Saved By The Rock ‘San Andreas’ is fun but has many faults ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 114 Min.

T

he first scene of San Andreas sets the tone and indicates why this will be more fun than expected. It opens with a bubble-headed blonde driving her car on a mountainside, where there’s no guard rail and a steep drop below. She’s texting and driving, only half-paying attention to the road and completely oblivious to the danger. To no one’s surprise, she drives off a cliff. Now, had this been a seriousminded, reality-based drama, her possible death would come as an early tragedy. But here, we’re meant to cheer on her potential demise, as her introduction and paper-thin characterization are so over-the-top, the only thing we can do as she’s hurtling off a cliff is chuckle. Unfortunately, she doesn’t become the ultimate text n’ drive cautionary tale but finds herself wedged cliff-side (one of those impossible feats of gravity that only happens in the movies). Her rescue by a helicopter pilot introduces us to the film’s star, Dwayne Johnson, in a way that’s equally shameless: Johnson’s back is initially to the camera, but he turns around and utters a cool line for the camera. It’s a real movie star

introduction and, again, all we need to remind us to take none of this seriously. Ray, Johnson’s character, is an airborne hero but suffering from a troubled home life. His wife (played by Carla Gugino) is leaving him, due to a shared personal tragedy. While Ray is flying around California, a massive earthquake hits a building where his wife is visiting her new boyfriend. While Ray swoops down to rescue the future ex-Mrs. Ray, his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) informs them by phone that she’s trapped in a nearby building. While much of San Francisco is crumbling, Ray attempts to reunite his family before everything around them burns. San Andreas is an indefensibly stupid but premium junk food movie. There are lots of moments where the camera goes for a close-up and cast members pause to sell yet another cheesy, trailer-ready line of dialogue. Paul Giamatti, as the seemingly lone earthquake expert in San Francisco, makes this a master class of firing off cornball lines with a straight face. Johnson doesn’t give a fully committed performance, which is actually fine. The screenplay wants our emotional investment but the relax-it’s-just-a-movie turns by Johnson and Giamatti keep winking at the audience. The real star is Daddario, who’s appealing, gorgeous and

In the sequel, The Rock stops an erupting volcano by glaring at it

has a presence so strong that she never gets overshadowed by the special effects. Since the whole thing is so predictable, it’s never a question as to whether Ray will reconcile with his wife. Since Ray is played by none other than The Rock, we know the new boyfriend won’t last even before we meet him (unless he’s played by John Cena... which he isn’t and I digress). This is the kind of movie where characters are always able to outrun the pursuing cracks in the pavement and sprint ahead of the earth opening behind them. There are stolen bits from The Perfect Storm, Cliffhanger, Deep Impact, Earthquake and,

most absurdly, even Titanic (apparently, every disaster movie requires an old couple who just want to hug each other and die). This is a must for the big screen and a much better and shorter movie than 2012. The spectacle is truly something to see, as there are lots of big, dumb, extravagant summer movie thrills to savor. Here’s all you need to know if this movie’s for you: at one especially thrilling moment, Johnson and Gugino skydive in tandem and land in a baseball field. As soon as they touch ground, Johnson turns to Gugino and says, “I’ve always wanted to get you to second base.” ■

Horoscope

Sign Language GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

If there wasn’t a grain of truth in what you’ve been accused of or called out on, it wouldn’t bother you in the slightest. It’d just roll off your back. It’s that speck of verity that’s sticking in your craw and keeping you up nights. Still, a grain of truth is easily buried– whether under a mountain of bullshit rationalizations or under the fertile sod of personal growth is up to you. Finding enough of the latter to live with this tiny planetoid of shame could be a great challenge. I hope you opt for it anyway; the horseshit may be a quick fix, but it’ll wash away in the next big flood and you’ll be right back where you started. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

You’re going to lose things this week. Not big things, like a parent, or a lover–just little shit (that you need), like your phone, your car keys, your glasses. If you want to be able to keep track of this stuff at the moment, you’ll need to superglue it to your skin. I wouldn’t mention it except the time-loss promises to be hours, cumulatively, spent hunting your mundane necessities. So don’t bother with that stuff. Let things slide for a week. This is simply not the week to get all the nitpicky shit crossed off your to-do list. Just go have fun, and if your glasses get misplaced for a few days, don’t worry about it. They’ll turn up, and it gives you an excuse to just go goof off in the meantime. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Not that you’ve ever been huge on one-night stands, but resist the temptation to indulge in any this week. You’ll regret it later, when the stinginess of the moment inflicts itself upon you, after your hormonal compulsions wear off. It’s a mistake to succumb to the tremendous pressure to misbehave–and you know I’m usually quite an advocate of mischievous misconduct. But sometimes it pays to just be a good boy or girl–like now. Save the naughtiness for when it’ll actually do you and others some good, not presently, when it’ll just make everyone feel bad and not actually be much fun.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

While your Capricornian neighbors wrestle with the dilemma of being mirrors for their parents, you’re more concerned this week with being parents, or otherwise setting an example for those under your influence. Those impressionable minds, be they children, your parents, lovers, or admirers, are a huge responsibility, and you’re daunted by it. Don’t be. You’re imperfect, just like the rest of us, and that’s more than okay. It makes you accessible, relatable. What I’m trying to get across: Don’t sweat it, and especially, don’t bother trying to present some perfected version of yourself. You’re the perfect example, just as you are.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Your lover’s liable to abscond to Europe this week, with the dog. Or your mom could elope with a boyfriend half her age, without telling you. It’s not that you resent your peeps their adventures so much– it’s that they failed to include you! Please don’t take it personally, though. Sometimes things move fast, and are sufficiently compelling that even a VIP like you can get temporarily overlooked. Have a hissy fit, and all you’ll get is a sorrowful, guilty apology. Play it cool, and you’re likely to get an apology anyway–along with invitations to future fun.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You are your parents. That’s the depressing truth, or it seems to be–often at your worst moments. Although you’re likely to notice a few uninspiring traits you inherited from Mom or Pop this week, don’t let it get you down. The more you can see what you’ve unwillingly absorbed, the more you’re able to transcend it, to consciously decide to act differently. So don’t freak; now that you can see how things are, the power is in your hands. You may be your parents (in certain ways) right now, but if you don’t like that, by this time next year you can have eradicated nearly every trace. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Face value is overrated this week, so don’t build your whole life, or even engage in any major decisions, based on appearances. They’re misleading. In fact, the most positive thing to occur in the next seven days will turn out, upon further reflection, to be basically crappy (or at best neutral). On a more inspiring note, however, the two most negative events that happen will, as early as next week, wind up being some of the best stuff to come your way all year, even though they suck in the moment. It’s one of those things–you learn a million times more from your failures than your successes–as long as you let yourself. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You’re usually more afraid of screwing something up than of it simply going wrong on its own. Instead of remembering that shit just happens, you start getting paranoid about how you’re going to make it happen, inadvertently. Please refrain from worrying about it, since that’s the single most likely way that you’ll manifest it. One solution: Look in the mirror and say your worst fear out loud. Say, “Yep. That’s exactly what’s going to happen. We’re all simply going to die (or whatever).” Shrug, accept it, and laugh in spite of it. Then go enjoy yourself, because the worst has already happened in your head; what’s left to worry about?

QUIZ understood

Blood is thicker than water, and the stuff that pumps through your oversized heart is no exception. Sometimes it moves faster than electricity, and you can process emotions with superhuman velocity. Other times, it gets thick and sluggish and sticky, and you’re stuck dealing with heavy soul-goop for days after you wish you were over it. Unfortunately, you may suffer more of the latter experience this week. Please don’t beat yourself up over it; sometimes the only way to be done with something is to mentally hash it over until you’re utterly bored with it. Luckily, you’ll reach that point soon, and you’ll be able to move on to something a bit more interesting, and enlightening.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

This week, you’ve got plenty of leverage when negotiating for what you want. People know they might as well make deals with you, since if they don’t, you’re perfectly capable of simply seizing what you want by force. Don’t be too greedy or bossy when exercising this little bit of pull. The best deals, as you know, are always win-win. Since you’re the one calling the shots when brokering, please angle for mutual benefit, not pure self-advancement. They’ll remember it–and so will you–when the tables are turned, a bit further down the line. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Get thee to bed. There’s enough going on in your world to give you conniptions if you think about it too much. The only place that makes sense is between your sheets (especially if you have someone to play with there), so why stray far from their comfort when you don’t have to? It’s off to work next week, confusion or no, so enjoy every delicious sleepy moment available to you. There’s time to muddle through, and times to avoid it all, and one of your chief recurrent mistakes is getting confused between them, opting for avoidance when you should be dealing, and struggling when it’s better to wait and let things blow over a little. So trust me, and go to bed.

Discovery of your creative aptitude happened almost completely by accident. But what a happy accident! The artistic talents you wield (even if you’re publicly bashful or modest about them) are among your most prized assets. This is a good week to take them one step further. No need to quit your day job to write the great American novel, or to even advertise what you’re up to. But because it feeds you (and there’s no better reason), truly commit to your art in a way that makes sense in your life and which, most importantly, generates an opening–no matter how tiny–for an even greater flow of creative juices.
