WHAT’S UP WITH SPEAKER JOE SOUKI’S DISCLOSURE FORMS?
Show's over, people

ics Comission [sic] reporting system, which uses letters to designate value ranges. Souki said he mistakenly selected category ‘E’, indicating a value of at least $50,000 but less than $100,000.” Mistake? Mental error? Sure, why not. “‘I put it in the wrong block,’ he said,” Lind’s story continued. “He added with a chuckle: ‘I don’t have that kind of money.’” Oh, but that’s not all. See, Lind couldn’t help but notice that Souki had filed a Financial Disclosure Statement in 2014 that indicated that Souki had NO financial interests of any kind (Souki had checked the box marked “NONE” under each and every category). There’s no possible way that any of that was true. Here’s Souki’s explanation to Lind: “When asked about it this week, Souki seemed confused and was unable to explain how or why he had signed off on this blank document as accurate,” Lind wrote. “Souki described it as another ‘mental error.’”

I love it when a news story explaining a meaningless press release that hasn’t even been sent out yet. On June 20, The Maui News reported that Maui Police officials said during the June 17 Police Commission meeting that the department’s body camera study–in which 10 volunteer officers wore cameras donated by Taser–is effectively over. In fact, it apparently ended about six weeks ago. Assistant Chief John Jakubczak said during the hearing that feedback from the officers in the test was “100 percent positive,” but Chief Tivoli Faaumu cautioned that the department is still “in the testing phase.” So the test the department announced in April is over but they’re still testing? And while it’s great the officers in the test liked the cameras, but what about the public who showed up in all that camera footage? Thankfully, the MPD issued a press release on June 22 that should clear everything up. “On May 5, 2015, The Plans, Training, Research and Development Section of the Maui Police Department concluded the 30 day trail [sic] for the body-worn cameras,” stated the press release, which also reported that the cameras met with a lot of positive feedback from officers. “The results of the trial assists the Maui Police Department in our ability to make an informed decision about the implementation of this technology. Maui Police Department continues to research alternative bodyworn camera vendors, feasibility issues and funding resources.” See, it’s very simple: the MPD may eventually someday wear body cameras, unless they don’t.
Something really weird is going on with House Speaker Joe Souki’s Financial Disclosure Statements in regards to his investment in Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI). It all started on June 13, when Honolulu reporter/blogger Ian Lind put up a blog post (Ilind.net) on how his reading of the longtime Wailuku state Representative and Speaker of the House’s financial disclosure statements indicated something screwy with his HEI investments. To wit: “Sometime in the year before Hawaiian Electric Industries and NextEra Energy announced their proposed merger, House Speaker Joe Souki at least doubled his investment in Hawaiian Electric. And when the share price jumped after the merger was announced, he enjoyed another boost in his investment’s value.” That’s actually a very serious matter. If it’s just luck, then Souki got a nice break and that’s great for him. But if he had secret info about the pending HEI/NextEra merger, then that smacks of insider trading, which is quite bad. Lind’s June 13 post laid it out in detail Souki’s various Financial Disclosure Statements, beginning with the 2012 statement that showed Souki owned 729 shares of HEI. Then Lind combined some math with historical HEI share prices to show that a sudden increase in the value of Souki’s HEI investment in 2014 seemed to indicate that he’d bought a lot of shares in the period between July 2013 and February 2014. But missing from Lind’s 2013 report was any statement from Souki himself.
When it seemed that no mainstream news source was following up on Lind’s reporting–or at least just getting Souki’s explanation–I emailed Souki on June 16 and asked for his comment on Lind’s post. Souki denied buying any additional shares of HEI. In fact, he denied ever buying any shares of HEI. “I did not purchase one share since I inherited the Stock from my mother around 1988,” Souki said in an email. “The number of shares I inherited was around 364, it doubled by [sic] on a 2 to one split in 2004 increasing shares to 729, which is what I own presently.” Unbeknownst to me, at the same time Souki was emailing me he was also in the process of responding to Lind. Not only did Souki tell Lind the same thing about inheriting the HEI shares from his mom and benefitting from a stock split, but he added that he’d also filled out those Financial Disclosure Statements wrong. Here’s Souki’s explanation in a June 17
See what happens

Sigh. Financial Disclosure Statements are designed to give the public a picture of any financial interests an official (elected or appointed) might hold, so that the public can make sure the official isn’t making decisions for some sort of personal gain. But the forms used to declare financial interests in this state (and county) aren’t very clear, offering vague check-off boxes and value ranges instead of hard numbers and explanations. And that’s when they’re filled out correctly. Well, apparently correctly, because given Souki’s explanations–and the question of whether he’ll face any sort of sanction for screwing up his disclosure statements–who the hell knows anymore. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

marked its 13th anniversary by announcing it has freed 22 large whales from life threatening entanglements since its 2002 inception. Also, nearly 10,000 feet of larger gauge line has been recovered from entangled whales during rescue operations by the Hawaiian Island Disentanglement Network. The sanctuary and partners have also helped free many other marine animals including monk seals, sea turtles, dolphins and mantas. The primary objective of HIHWNMS is to work with our partners and the public in order to reduce the threat in the future for humpback whales as well as other species, according to Superintendent Malia Chow. HIHWNMS is releasing newly edited footage and images from the most recent large whale disentanglement in February 2015; the group is also planning to release unique imagery of a compelling 2013 rescue of a young humpback, the first calf ever cut free by the team, according to Chow. JURASSIC HELICOPTERS ENDS OPERATIONS AT HYATT RESORT So about a month ago in our annual MauiTime Summer Guide, we said that Jurassic Helicopters was operating tours of Molokai and Haleakala from its home on the rooftop of the Hyatt Resort in Ka‘anapali. It was at least somewhat disconcerting to see helicopters four or so times a day flying low over water, then land on the Hyatt’s southern most rooftop heliport. But this apparently is no longer the case, as Jurassic ceased operations this week. Apparently, a lot of people at the County of

The staff and students of Hui Malama Learning Center recently received nearly $7,500 from Hawaii Petroleum. The donation was part of Ohana Fuels’ “Fuel Up. Do Good” community giving program; to raise the money, Ohana Fuels earmarked a portion of sales of their Top Tier fuel-efficient gasoline from January through March 2015. The money was designated for donation to the Learning Center’s enrichment programs. Ohana Fuels also provided Hui Malama with a Minit Stop location and equipment to conduct car-wash fundraisers, which helped raise additional money for the Learning Center’s programs. The funds donated by Ohana Fuels will allow the school to expand academic and mentoring programs as well as community service projects. “The mission of our Giving Program is to help meet the needs of the communities we serve by supporting non-profit organizations that improve the overall quality of life,” said Kimo Haynes, President of Hawaii Petroleum Inc. “Ohana Fuels proudly sponsors programs that enhance the vitality of our
neighborhoods, celebrate our community’s success, and support local charities.” Hui Malama partnering with successful local businesses like Hawaii Petroleum is a critical component of the school’s new workforce preparedness project made possible through the County of Maui and GIA funding, Haynes said. Hui Malama Learning Center’s mission is to inspire, nurture and empower students to pursue careers that bolster our islands’ economy, increase self-reliance and provide for future generations, according to its Mission Statement. calf with a life-threatening tight wrap of line around its body, being accompanied by its mother. The crew used a specially designed knife on a long pole to cut the line and free the calf. The rescue that occurred earlier this year documents the disentanglement of an adult humpback whale with tight wraps of heavy gauge line around its tail and trailing hundreds of feet behind. Marine mammal entanglement, or “bycatch,” is a global problem that results in the death of hundred of thousands of whales, dolphins, porpoises and seals every year. For large whales, the impact is typically not immediate as the animals can pull gear off the ocean floor and swim off with it. However, freeing a 45-ton animal in the open ocean is dangerous for animals and rescuers. As a result, response requires authorization and permits under NOAA Fisheries’ Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program and the state of Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources. Responders, as seen in the imagery, are well trained and equipped. The whale sanctuary works with its part-
Maui thought it was disconcerting, too. “We have stopped operating off the heliport at the Hyatt,” company owner Laurence Balter told me on June 16. He added that the company stopped operating because “in the best interests of safety, we thought it was best to cease operations on the rooftop.” County Communications Director Rod Antone acknowledged that the county’s Department of Fire and Public Safety did speak with Jurassic, but didn’t throw them off the roof. “They just said to submit something to the Planning Department,” Antone told me today. “We’re talking about putting aircraft fuel on a hotel rooftop. They said to submit something so the Planning Department can make a determination.” “We’re looking at other options right now,” Balter said. “We’ll be up and running soon.” -Anthony Pignataro ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

News Of The Weird WHAT CANNIBALS CAN TEACH US Researchers studying the human-braineating Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea reported in a June journal article that they have identified the specific “prion” resistance gene that appears to offer complete protection against mad cow disease and perhaps other neurodegenerative conditions such as dementias and Parkinson’s. The tribe customarily dined on relatives’ brains at funerals (although has abandoned the practice) and consequently suffered a major 1950s epidemic that wiped out 2 percent of the tribe annually. According to the lead researcher, survivors, with the specific resistance gene, demonstrated “a striking example of Darwinian evolution in humans.”

Spouses often disagree politically and vote accordingly, but occasionally one runs for office against the other–as is the case in Bremerton, Washington, where incumbent Council member Roy Runyon is being challenged by his wife, Kim Faulkner. Both were mum as to reasons and in fact filed their registration papers together at the same time in May. Said Runyon: “We’re different people. She might have a different approach.”

India’s media reported in April yet another birth defect in which the surviving baby is treated as a representation of Hindu holiness. A four-armed, four-legged child (medical explanation: remains of an underdeveloped conjoined twin) is worshipped as the reincarnation of the multi-limbed Lord Ganesha, and pilgrims journey from all over India to the birthplace, Dumri-Isri in Jharkhand state. (In a nod to modernity, one witness told a reporter that initially he had thought a photograph of the child was “Photoshopped,” but now has seen the baby with his own eyes.)
TURKEY-BASTER INSEMINATION LAW The law of turkey-baster insemination took a turn in Virginia in April when mother Joyce Bruce was unable to keep sperm-provider Robert Boardwine out of her son’s life. Bruce relied on a state statute that seemed to allow her sole parenthood if the pregnancy was based on assisted-reproduction medical technology. However, the Court of Appeals of Virginia declared that a “kitchen implement” is not “medical technology” and, considering Boardwine’s genuine interest in fatherhood, ruled that he was entitled to joint custody and visitation rights.
ANOTHER ‘HUMAN RIGHT’ In April, London’s Daily Mail spotted Anna Broom of Gillingham declaring that despite her various disorders that keep her from working, she nonetheless imagines a

first-class wedding with champagne, horsedrawn carriage and Mexico honeymoon–all at government expense–because that would be her “human right.” She told a reporter that a small ceremony at a government office would not boost her confidence, but that her “dream” wedding would be just the thing to get her back on a job search.
THIS WEEK IN TATTOOED EYEBALLS The most recent exposition of people who tattoo their eyeballs, at the International Tattoo Festival in Caracas, in February, featured the phenomenon’s founder, Mr. Luna Cobra, who said it all started when he tried to create “bright blue” eyes, as in the 1984 film Dune. (Pigment is injected, permanently, so that it rests under the eye’s thin top layer, the conjunctiva.) Asked what the process feels like, devotee Kylie Garth told BBC News, “It was mentally intense,” resembling an eye poke, pressure and “a bit of sand”–but “no pain.” Mr. Cobra urged young people to get their jobs before trying eye tats, since “you’re going to look frightening forever to the majority of people you encounter.”
THE CONSTITUTION PROTECTS APES TOO?! Once again, in May, lawyers went to court trying to persuade a judge that some rights under the U.S. Constitution be extended to intelligent apes (here, chimpanzees, as “autonomous and self-determining beings” at least as perceptive as, for example, severely mentally ill people, who retain rights while institutionalized). Lawyers are once again asking for a writ of habeas corpus (now available only to humans) to take Hercules and Leo out of a lab and into a sanctuary. (Adding to the discussion, in the week after the court hearing, a Harvard professor and colleagues, writing in the journal Current Anthropology, hypothesized that chimps could cook foods if given the chance. Tests revealed that they resist raw food when they are able to place it into a device that made it taste better–which in theory makes them more intelligent than children who eat cookie dough.)
BAFFLING PERVERSION Some men are compelled to express unrequited love for women by ejaculating onto them or into their beverages. The Minnesota legislature is working to upgrade its law (since a recent defendant, John Robert Lind, was acquitted of adulterating his coworker’s coffee on the ground that current law requires actually touching the victim). However, Lind (who admitted a total of six climaxes against the co-worker) is an amateur compared to Tetsuya Fukuda, 40, who was finally apprehended in April, at which time he admitted “more than 100” semen attacks on women on trains near Kinshicho, Japan, dating back to 2011. He told police, “I get excited when in close contact with a woman on a crowded train.”■

I asked in a polite voice, “Are you taking the best handicapped parking stall her just to carpool somewhere?” I suggested that if she was riding somewhere with him, she could park in a non-handicapped space so another handicapped person going to Foodland could park there. The guy with her then screamed, “Who are you? Some security cop?” She said, “Who the fuck are you? You should stay in your own back yard!” About half an hour later, I was taking a photo of the car when the guy saw me and jumped into the pic, saying, “Get a life old man, where you don’t care who parks where.” Well young man, nice Jaguar. Why ‘Burn’n Love’ star Darren Lee thinks Maui is the only place on Earth where being an Elvis impersonator is cool
A
t the age of 15, when most people are still trying to figure themselves out, Darren Lee was on the road impersonating one of the most famous icons in the rock-androll world. Lee is now 48 and has been an award-winning Elvis impersonator for 27 years (his most recent was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award in 2013, in recognition of his success in Las Vegas). But being an Elvis impersonator is a young man’s profession (Elvis Presley died in 1977 at the age of 42), and Lee knows that he’s reaching the final stages of his career. Still, he’s brought his talent to Maui to showcase the love for Hawaii that he shares with his legendary role model. “Burn’n Love” premiered at the Maui Theatre on Dec. 20, 2013 and has received phenomenal reviews from locals and tourists of all ages. Lee says much of the success of the show belongs to executive producer Mike Kattawar and Rick Dunaj, his manager. A second show, also called “Burn’n Love,” is scheduled to open at the Holiday Inn Resort Waikiki Beachcomber on July 14, featuring Leo Days as Elvis.
10 JUNE 25, 2015
“We had to hire another impersonator because I live on Maui and I’m staying here forever,” Lee said in his dressing room backstage after one recent performance. “I turned the rules so that my job could be on Maui and the way we’ve been supported and loved by the people here,
it’s like, I’m not leaving. This is my place.” But the path to paradise wasn’t always easy. Lee started his journey in Edmonton, Canada, where his mother first introduced him to Elvis’s music. “[My mother] was a heavy inspiration, more so in the fact that she loved Elvis
and so his music was all over the house… whenever we’d get driven to school, she would throw eight tracks in and most of them were Elvis,” Lee said. “That’s just where the love of his music developed.” After a Catholic nun taught Lee how to play guitar, he used what she taught him to start learning Elvis songs by ear. Lee started singing in lounges, but didn’t know what it was like to impersonate an artist until he entered his first Elvis competition. Not only did he win second place, he was also approached by another impersonator who encouraged him to audition for a role in a show called “Elvis, Elvis, Elvis” that was touring through Canada. “I sent the promoter a very bad video and his exact words were, ‘We don’t have anybody else, so you’ll do,’ so I was hired,” Lee said. “I had the time of my life. I was on the road with seven guys, two other Elvis’s and we played everywhere, drove in the bus and had a blast.” Nine years later, with multiple contests and shows under his belt, Lee finally won the title of top Elvis tribute artist in the world at a competition in Memphis, Tennessee.
“The one in Memphis is cut-throat because it’s a week long and there’s 50 Elvis’s every night, from Monday to Thursday,” Lee said. “There’s 397 guys who look just like you and you get 15 minutes and you’ve got to try to turn on the judges.” During his highly praised performance, Lee said he noticed that men were standing up and dancing, whereas it was usually just women, and this gave him the confidence to win over the judges. Lee made history when he became the first Canadian to win the competition on Aug. 16, 1997–20 years to the day that Elvis died. As it happened, 1997 was also the same year Lee first visited Maui and fell in love with the island. “When I saw the Feast at Lele, there was a hula dancer and the sun was going down and the waves and the boats were in the background and I was just like, ‘I want to jump up there right now and do Rocka-Hula,’” Lee said. But Hawaii wasn’t meant to be his home just yet. He returned to the mainland and went on to became the first Elvis tribute artist to perform in Las Vegas for 11 consecutive years, although he wasn’t
that this was redemption,” he said. “This was more than just being paid, this was needing to get back to enjoying this and there’s not one show that we’ve done that I haven’t enjoyed. No one enjoys the show more than I do and you can tell; I give you 150 percent and I’m hoping [the audience] is there to play.” Lee attributes all of his success in life to being an Elvis impersonator, but said that he’s quite different from The King. “I learned everything from watching his movies and listening to him sing, but we’re totally different people,” Lee said. “I never become Elvis. When you see me on stage, I’m always Darren Lee. In my mind, Elvis has never existed…and that’s just the mindset that keeps me normal, not thinking I’m actually Elvis.” Although most of Lee’s musical inspiration came from Elvis, he also admires the country artist Eddie Rabbitt and is a selfproclaimed KISS fanatic. Lee said he may have even become a KISS tribute artist if he had the right voice, but he wouldn’t have ended up in Maui if that was the case. “When I’m up on the riser at the beginning of the show and there’s fog all over, that’s my KISS moment. I’ve got my cape out and I’m going, ‘Yeah, I’m Gene Simmons,’ and
exactly thrilled about it. He only got to be on stage for 15 minutes as the opening act, then he would have to sit in a minuscule dressing room (that was shared by all the performers) for an hour and a half until it was time for the finale. “I wanted out of the show after maybe the first year and a half or two years,” Lee said. “I watched every movie, I think, that’s ever been invented. I talked to the guy that was sitting beside me and after 11 years, you’ve got nothing else to say.” Lee was grateful when the show finally ended, just in time for the arrival of two new additions to his family. “About two months after the show ended, [our twin girls] were born and that’s when life changed,” Lee said. “I wouldn’t have wanted to raise the girls in Vegas, so we were thinking I was meant to leave the show, go back home to Canada and then find a way to get to Maui.” Along the way, Lee has had to overcome many hardships including deaths and losing almost everything he owned from bankruptcy, but none of it ever stopped him from making his dreams a reality. “I knew that once I lost everything in Vegas,
then I turn around and I’m Elvis,” Lee said. Lee’s favorite part of the entire show is “Black Leather” because he believes it was the best thing that Elvis ever did and performing the song gives him a chance to show off his guitar skills. But Lee knows that his time as an Elvis tribute artist may soon come to an end. “I know I can’t do this forever. You know you don’t want a 50-something year-old guy up on the stage trying to be a young Elvis,” Lee said. “I will hire somebody to come and do this (show) and then I’ll take a big version of ‘Burn’n Love’ and I would like to end my career with a European tour.” Until that time comes, he will continue to do what he loves and enjoy the support he’s received from the community. “Maui is the only place on Earth where being an Elvis impersonator is a really cool job,” Lee said. “Being an Elvis impersonator in L.A. or Vegas, it’s a joke; but for the people here on Maui, Elvis is still the legend that he was when he left us.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

ow there’s another reason to eat at Lahaina Grill–one that has nothing to do with their stunning food or service or the fact that TripAdvisor named them one of the 25 restaurants in the nation. Sunken chocolate cake and you can always swap out your favorite starches when you order. The vegetarian grilled polenta stack is another beautiful entree that’s full of garden rich eggplant and portobello mushrooms joined over a roasted red bell pepper coulis and Maui onion sauce. The “From the Sea” menu features their famous Tequila shrimp in a Southwestern inspired prep, Seared lion paw scallops and their Wild Pacific salmon, which has two different plating options. As always, their onion and sesame seed crusted seared ahi and sauteed local mahi with gorgonzola and chardonnay beurre blanc are really popular. Dessert is not part of the kama‘aina deal, but that’s no reason not to treat yourself. Their famous berry pie, goat cheese cheesecake, sunken chocolate cake and creme brulee are divine ways to end the evening. o many things in life are fleeting. I guess that’s one reason why people gravitate towards tattoos. But in ancient Polynesia, tattoos represented rites of passage for the men and women who wore them. Known as “tatau” in Samoan and Tahitian and “kakau” in Hawaiian, many Polynesian languages describe the art in a similar way. When missionaries arrived in the late 1800s, they nearly stamped out the practice. The old ways of carving wild boar teeth into combs called au that were filed down by lava rock, attaching the au to tortoise shells and lashing them to a stick may have been lost, but the Samoans’ tufuga ta tatau (masters) are known for continuing the practice

Paulo II, as it was his vision to see the art of tatau travel across borders. It was controversial in the 1990s that the Samoans would share the pe‘a outside of their culture, but the interest of other influential artists like Ed Hardy and invitations to conventions continued to showcase the beauty and significance of these artists. The name Pili Mo‘o translates as “Samoan Lizard,” and the mo‘o is a sacred entity in West Maui. Mo‘o believes there’s a lot of faith and trust involved in the tatau, and credits his clients for also perpetuating the tradition. Pili Mo‘o is versed in Tahitian, Samoan, Marquesan and Maori. Miss Devon and the Outlaw GET READY BECAUSE THE DUO’S BRINGING WESTERN SWING MUSIC TO MAUI
T
it eventually went around the world with GIs during World War II. MT: Who influenced you as an artist? MD: My father was the late Phil Ryan, a professional jazz/swing guitarist, singer, songwriter, sideman and bandleader. I grew up with his music–American songbook and Western swing–and I always loved it. I had nothing in common musically with my own generation, and never regretted it. To me, a great song has to have a patina of about 80 years on it…
“If you really like doing this, I will teach you to play rhythm guitar like a man!” By age 13, I was Dad’s sideman on stages around Corpus Christi–my sister was on drums, we all sang, and the trio was called “The Ryan Sisters Plus One.” There is nothing like regular, professional band work onstage to accelerate stage craft, so those were challenging, but wonderful years. I performed with Dad until my marriage to Chuck Dawson at age 18. In elementary school, I was a good student and especially loved geography since I was seeing half of the United States regularly with my traveling musician family, attending an average of three schools per year, in totally different parts of the country. I once had a rare argument with a fifth grade teacher–I was living in El Paso at the time–when I insisted that I was going to be a musician when I grew up. She remonstrated, “No, you think that you’re going to be a musician” I retorted “No I know, I’m going to be a musician.” Never did like that teacher... MT: You and your father have an interesting connection with Hawaii. Tell us more...
MAUITIME: You say that you play “Western swing music.” What does that mean? MISS DEVON: Western swing is a fusion of musical styles that could only have happened in Texas and Oklahoma. It developed during the Depression and Dust Bowl era, and mixes swing with the blues, adds in Chicago and New Orleans jazz influences, Mexican mariachi styles, fiddles in twin and trio harmonies, Celtic fiddle styles seen in the breakdowns and jigs and a dash of Hollywood. Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys are perhaps the most famous names developing the genre, first locally in Texas and Oklahoma, then moving west to California with the lure of making movies for Columbia Pictures. Simultaneously, the Dust Bowl refugees migrated to the West Coast, bringing the music with them. And
or sound like it does! My first crush was on Bing Crosby–my heart raced when I heard the “Sons of the Pioneers.” I wanted to sing like Ella, play rhythm like Django and I could not sit still when a Bob Wills record was playing. MT: Did you always know music was your niche? MD: Dad gave me my first guitar when I was nine, and by age 11, he figured my hands were big enough to manage a six-string. It was an electric guitar, with a fast neck, which eased the transition for my little hands, but I proved to be a rhythm player who quickly gravitated to the glories of the acoustic dreadnaught. He was my teacher, and my folks were pretty gratified to see how I took to it. I clearly remember he told me one day,
Miss Devon, in her home stompin' grounds of Fort Worth, Texas see plenty of fans turn out to our shows wearing every color of palaka, as we bring our own brand of Texas aloha. MT: When did The Outlaw come in the picture? MD: I met Jessie Robertson in 1996, and there’s is a very touching story associated with that, but suffice to say that is was God’s appointment, and it probably saved his life at a very low period for him. He’s a twotime cancer survivor, dabbles on the sax, and because it’s plumb illegal what he
MD: In the early ‘70s, my dad was in Ernie Menehune’s Polynesian Revue, which toured the mainland, based out of Tucson, Arizona. Ernie was brother to Larry Rivera, the showman of Coco Palms, and the brothers hailed from Kekaha, Kauai. Through this association, I became entranced with Hawaiian music, and have developed that appreciation over the years, with trips to the islands and availing myself of chances to see Brothers Cazimero, Irmgaard Aluli (Puamana), Larry Rivera, Danny Kaleikini and collecting recordings of Gabby, Makaha Sons, Genoa Keawe and Alfred Apaka. Music has always been the lynch pin of any trip I plan to the islands, so I got to thinking about writing a song about the ubiquitous fabric of Hawaiian life–palaka–the cotton plaid workshirts that every worker wore on the plantations. “Palaka” came together, and we recorded and released it on the air in Hawaii first, Miss Devon and the Outlaw in mid-June 2015. I hope to

MT: What about the youth and beauty you recruited for your West Coast tour?
PHOTO COURTESY MISS DEVON AND THE OUTLAW
MD: A fine young talent, Kristyn Harris, is a Western music star in her own right, whom I mentored from age 14–she just turned 21 in early June. She is like a daughter to me and Chuck, and Jessie loves her, too. Last year, she garnered the two top female performer titles in Western music when she became the Academy of Western Artists Western Music Female Performer 2013, and then became the youngest person to ever hold the honor of Western Music Association Female Performer of the Year 2014. She is definitely the ingenue of the bunch–a 5’2”-eyes-of-blue true cowgirl who lives on 20 acres in Collin County, Texas with her dad and two mustang horses that she adopted and trained from the wild. She will be taking her turn center stage at our shows, with her strong Western swing rhythm style, engaging original songs, Western classics and her big, radiant voice. Then she picks up a big acoustic bass, several inches taller than her petite frame, and whonks out some mighty fine Western swing licks as Outlaw and I take our turn. The icing of this cake is Brook Wallace, whom I have known since she was eight years old, when she was dreaming of becoming a world champion fiddler. She achieved that at age nine, when she aced the junior division titles for all three major fiddle championships–the youngest person ever to do this. Those days were all about technique and competition, but Brook progressed way beyond that and has a become a much-in-demand band player. With true drive, she is a captivating entertainer. The eldest of 10 kids, she is no stranger to travel, and in recent years has been seen playing in

does with Milk Cow Blues, has been dubbed “Outlaw Jessie Del.” We add youth and beauty to the mix with Kristyn Harris on the acoustic bass, and fiddlist Brook Wallace as our lead instrument. My husband Chuck adds sweet harmonica touches, and is the introvert of the group. He comes along to protect me from the Outlaw.
MT: What are your five must-haves when you’re own tour? MD: Pillows, cell phone chargers, hats and boots, guitar strings and tuners, lipstick and, in Hawaii, sunscreen. That’s more than five, I know, but I have a problem with overpacking... MT: What are some of the highlights from your current tour? MD: We have an appearance in Tucson, followed by a performance at The Mavericks in Visalia, California. That’s a bucket-lister, and I’m keenly looking forward to it because they make possibly the best coffee on earth. I smile at this, since you are from the coffee state– nothing like a good cup of Kona, ya know! We’re doing a theater concert for OutWest Concert Series in the Santa Clarita area, which is heavily supported by our pardners in the Western Music Association (WMA)’s Southern California Chapter. The WMA is the premiere organization, founded 30 years ago by Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Rex Allen, Michael Martin Murphey and many others to promote and support the music and musicians who choose this cultural trail, celebrating the life and musical arts of the American West. We’ll do a show in Altadena at Bob Stane’s venerated Coffee Gallery Backstage. Stane was part-owner of The Ice House in Pasadena back in the glory days of the folk revival (1960-1978) and hosted every bright star of improv and folk music during that time. A tour in So Cal for us will always include the chance to perform at the tiny venue. Hopefully, we leave the heat behind when we head for Northern California to do two house concerts, after which we head for Maui. MT: We hear you’re hooking up with some jazz performers on Maui, too. MD: We’re really looking forward to appearing at Stopwatch in Makawao on July 1. What
Singin' on the trail at the New Mexico Centennial Cattle Drive 2012 a great way to kick off rodeo week festivities. Then the next day at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, and that evening at Casanova. A highlight will be joining forces with the Jazz Maui participants, which just happen to be guys from our alma mater, University of Texas at Arlington. This is a total serendipity. With the help of Maui music producer and historian Bryant Neal, we’ve cooked up a spicy mix which will culminate with our four and their six players to create a 10-piece big band doing Western swing and American swing classics at Casanova on Thursday night, July 2. Sounds like that’s the night to get your boots ready for scootin’! MT: What would you like future generations to remember about your music? MD: I’ve worked at mentoring for almost 20 years, so that this wonderful and unique music will perpetuate into the next generation. I helped mentor Kacey Musgraves when she was one of our CowTown Opry Buckaroos, from age 10 to 18. We got to see her recently in her old stomping grounds. She became mistyeyed for those sweet days of learning her showmanship, Western music repertoire, yodeling and how to back yourself up with actual guitar-playing–everybody works in a Western band and there’s no karaoke tracks! She gave kudos to being a former Buckaroo, and before a packed house at Billy Bob’s she was not ashamed to end her set in the way we taught her, with “Happy Trails.” In that moment, I feel that the Lord let me see that we’re having an effect, and it’s daily reiterated for me as I have the honor to perform side by side with Kristyn and Brook. Let me also say that I will always be grateful for “Riders In the Sky,” for choosing me to be the singing voice of Jessie on what became their first Grammy-winning CD, Woody’s Roundup feat. Another of God’s amazing appointments, let me tell you!
and I accepted a Wrangler Award from the National Western Heritage Museum– the Cowboy Hall of Fame–in Oklahoma City. This was given to us to honor our debut CD Where in the Dickens R U? It’s kind of like winning a Grammy award for Western music. MT: Have you been to Maui before? MD: This is my fourth trip. MT: What do you like to do on Maui when not performing? MD: Snorkeling. MT: What do you do when you are not making music? Hobbies? MD: Lunching with girlfriends and shopping afterwards in the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. Actually, I volunteer at the Stockyards Museum every other Wednesday with my friend Teresa Burleson. And I sing in my church choir. Uh, I guess that’s making music, too. I cook and sew (and hula a little). MT: Do you have other stops in Hawaii? MD: Yes, we’re headed for four days on Kauai [with] no performances. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E stories, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

Life of Riley Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ is emotionally complex but a little soft ★★★★★ Rated PG / 94 Min.
T
he world presented by Pixar’s Inside Out is hard to describe, better seen than read, but resembles an elaborate video game with five very different players. Taking place within the mind of a young girl named Riley, five emotions within her personality–Fear, Disgust, Joy, Sadness and Anger–clock in and out on a daily basis, adding their personas (which are ingested through glowing balls of varying color) to her mindset. When Anger, for example, decides it’s time to give the girl a conniption fit, he punches a button or adds a light bulb that causes Riley to react accordingly. The five emotions closely resemble their temperament (Anger’s head literally sets on fire, Fear is a bookish twerp, Sadness is blue, etc). We see Riley’s external journey, in which her relationship with her parents are strained after they move to a new home in San Francisco, where Riley misses her friends and feels like an outcast. Her five emotions struggle to keep up with the reactions Riley has to the enormous changes in her life.
Unlike most Pixar films, the cast is almost an all-star line-up. Amy Poehler (as Joy), Phyllis Smith (as Sadness) and Lewis Black (as Anger) are wonderful, but I was especially moved by Richard Kind’s work as my favorite character in the film, Bing Bong, Riley’s former imaginary friend. The world they inhabit looks distractingly like a video game (not unlike Sugar Rush from Wreck-It Ralph), as if the inevitable game spinoff were ready to be shipped at this very minute. Pixar’s Inside Out has emotional punch and the expected visual brilliance (particularly in a sequence involving abstract thought) but there’s both simplicity and narrative limitations to its intriguing premise. I realize this a comedy for children and their parents, who will likely walk away with some insight into how the mind works and why. Yet, considering the serious turns the story takes (topics like depression and running away come up), it all seems kind of safe and cookie-cutter, particularly in the way the story resolves itself. The Pixar brand, with extraordinary animation, engrossing storytelling and an admirable touch of thematic darkness, is in full effect, but the latter is noticeably
What happens when our feels have feels?
softened. Not every Pixar movie needs to become as movingly bleak and emotionally complex as the climactic moments of Toy Story 3, but Inside Out only inches in that direction, then backs away. Again, this is a family film, and I recognize that PG-rated movies that will one day play on The Disney Channel don’t need to plummet the depths of human despair. Still, there are some admirably tough, even painful moments that surface here and I hoped the screenplay would honor them and see them through. A key sequence where Riley has, for lack of a better word, a breakdown in front of her classmates is relatable, painful and touching to witness. So is the way a character within Riley’s subconscious sacrifices himself late in the story. In the end,
rather than suggest Riley is at the beginning of a very long emotional journey ahead, the story concludes with pat uplift. That’s fine, I suppose, but I missed the brave march into daring, wrenching material, the way Up and even Wall-e did. Still, the messy emotional moments that hit hardest leave a mark. Inside Out is full of beauty, state of the art visualizations and big laughs, but I wanted it to go even deeper. It’s accompanied by a Hawaiithemed short film called Lava, which is lovely, rich in feeling and likely to be less controversial with local audiences than Aloha last month. I took my nine-year old cousin Jack to see this with me. He insisted that I should give this four stars, that it’s “better than Cars 2.” His suggestion made the head of the angry little man inside of me burst into flames. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Didn’t think you could overdose on intimacy did you? You believe in your own stamina, your ability to engage in–relish, even–emotional process for days on end. But how many heart-to-hearts can even your robust organ take before it’s pulped into jelly? This week you may find out, but I hope you’re wise enough to take a break before it comes to that. Don’t let things get to the snapping point, in an effort to prove yourself a superhumanly compassionate listener. Take some space before you get bitchy, while you can still do so gently. You have limits, whether you like it or not. Respect them. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
You can’t bake a cake in half the time by doubling the temperature. Try not to let your impatience get the best of you this week. It could be frustrating while you wait for certain necessary processes to play themselves out. Why can’t people just skip to the end that’s so obvious to you? Same reason the cake can’t rise into its sweet fluffy glory except in its own sweet fluffy time. Don’t turn up the heat, despite your current hotheadedness. You’ll just burn the cake and screw everything up. Patience, darling; your dessert is coming. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Don’t take anyone for granted this week. While most of your usual gang is lining up their vocal support for whatever you have in mind, your strongest and most important ally may have serious reservations. These could come up at an awkward time if you simply assume all along that they’ve got your back. You’ll want to heed whatever your best bud has to say, and it’ll be awkward for them to speak their mind in front of a mob of your rabid fans. Make sure you know (and consider) the opinions of those you want to count on,before you need to count on them.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
You need to dig a little deeper. That is, if you want to keep that special someone in your life, you’ve got to come up with and offer just that little bit more than you have so far. Otherwise s/he’s going to walk, and sooner rather than later. People need change, growth, expansion, development. And even though you’ve provided all those things, sometimes they need even more of them, faster. That’s just one of the compromises of being in a relationship. In other words, if you’ve got more to offer, put it out there, swiftly. If you don’t, get ready to say goodbye.
QUIZ understood 1: E–1,137 2: A–July 1, 2015 3: C–Alaska
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
Why does the phrase “just friends” even exist, anyway? It’s a lame break-up, especially considering that so many romantic relationships don’t seem to be especially good friendships; without sex to provide some kind of glue, they tend to fall apart. A good friendship is infinitely more complex, interesting, rewarding, and solid than most supposedly “intimate” connections. It’s alright for mutual physical pleasure to provide some of the bond between two people, especially in the beginning of a relationship, but eventually, unless some more enduring, deep, non-physical connection is cultivated, the relationship will fall apart. This week, develop what goes on between you and your partner out of bed, so that it’s at least as strong as what happens in it.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Extreme forces confuse and paralyze you when they’d polarize almost everyone else, and spur them to action. They’re just not your forte. However, during weeks like this one, rife with messy, subtle, conflicting influences that would bewilder most of the more straightforward signs, you thrive. An intricate maze full of subtle, almost indiscernibly different choices is ideal for you. Luckily that’s just what this week provides. Wind your way through it, and if you encounter any bewildered fire signs along the way, let them tag along, would you?
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
I’m often hard on Libras, I admit. I use that classic excuse to beat someone up: it’s because you can take it, and, more importantly, because I’m trying to get you to fulfill your potential. Libras have it so easy; you need to be pushed to develop yourselves. You’re generally reasonably smart, attractive, creative, and likeable. It’s awfully simple to glide by on those fine traits and just sort of be normal, nice–and, ultimately, mediocre. You’re certainly welcome to do that. But I say if you can step it up and be better than pretty good–and you can–you should.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
You’re lucky you’re not susceptible to the same confusing forces acting on your astrological neighbors, those Pisces, because they’d mess you up. Fortunately for you, everything this week is exactly how you like it; more or less straightforward, clear-cut, and unambivalent. Or so it might seem. It’s not that deceptions abound at the moment. No one’s got balls enough to out-and-out lie to your face. But should you come to the wrong conclusion on your own, no one’s likely to set you straight, either. In other words, before you make what seems like an obvious decision, check your facts. They might be false.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Your astrological neighbors, those Libras, sometimes require ass-kicking to explore unrealized potential. Not so you. Your predilection towards extremes of all kinds is a near-compulsion to leave no stone unturned–within yourself as well as without. As you’ve already discovered, many times, that can be dangerous. I won’t discourage you from this intrepid exploration, however, despite its hazards; it’s necessary, important, and admirable. But please consider the timing. What you do and where you go (mentally as well as physically) impacts other people besides yourself. You don’t necessarily owe it to them to wait until the time is right for everyone–but that kind of patience makes an awfully nice gift. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
It’s a week of reruns. You already know how all these stories are going to turn out, and no matter which channel you switch to you’re doomed to experience something worse than déjà vu. It may be tempting to inject some new elements into these situations, just to screw them up. You certainly could, if you chose to. But I wouldn’t, if I were you; any deviation from the course this week means a more negative, less satisfying outcome, and ultimately a more frustrating week than you were in for before. So you have to watch a few repeat episodes of shows you never particularly liked. So what? Relax. There’ll be enough chaos and uncertainty in the next couple of weeks to more than make up for their absence in this one.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Some people pack up their whole lives and move on a whim. Not Taurens. Although you can appreciate someone’s desire to live by the ocean, you’d never quit your job and schlep your shit somewhere for that reason alone. You need a lengthy rationale before you consider drastic changes, and lots of time to weigh all the factors of your decision. Sometimes, however, you don’t have time to figure out all the details before you take the plunge. Some opportunities vanish overnight, and some people simply don’t have that much patience. This week, if pressed into a decision you’re not ready for, don’t balk: Trust your gut and leap. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Twice now I’ve dreamt about Gemini friends conducting very unusual, uncharacteristic searches. In one, a tall, hairy, and very straight Gem friend was on the hunt for a pair of glamorous high-heeled shoes that’d fit his massive, crooked-toed feet. In the other, a friend of mine who already has two more kids than she’d ever planned on, restlessly sought babies–both animal and human–to kidnap and make her own. Are you, too, hunting something that isn’t exactly appropriate, and–despite its quirky possible appeal–doesn’t make sense? I suspect so, and I wish you’d stop chasing wild geese, especially since some tame, golden-egg laying ones are hanging out right nearby, just waiting for you to notice them.
