F

ederal Judge Susan Mollway struck down Maui County’s controversial anti-GMO ballot measure on June 30, saying simply that because state and federal law preempts it, the bill is “invalid and unenforceable.” “The court recognizes the importance of questions about whether GE activities and GMOs pose risks to human health, the environment, and the economy, and about how citizens may participate in democratic processes,” Mollway said, according to Honolulu Civil Beat on June 30. “But any court is a reactive body that addresses matters before it rather than reaching out to grab hold of whatever matters may catch a judge’s fancy because the matters are interesting, important, or of great concern to many people.” Mollway said the contentious battle over GMO science and Monsanto–which grows GMO crops in Maui County–had nothing to do with her ruling. “The court stresses again, so that no lay party has any misapprehension on this point, that it is ruling purely on legal grounds,” she said, according to Civil Beat. “No portion of this ruling says anything about whether GE organisms are good or bad or about whether the court thinks the substance of the Ordinance would be beneficial to the County.” The measure–the county’s first ever ballot initiative–won 50.2 percent to 47.9 percent in the 2014 general election. Post-election analysis by retired Maui professor Dick Mayer showed that voters in South Maui, West Maui and

Haiku largely supported the bill, while voters in Central Maui, Molokai and Lanai were decidedly against it. Look, we take no glee in this decision. In fact, it kinda makes us sad. Yes, we editorialized against the bill during the 2014 election, saying we thought it was poorly written and based on faulty science. But from the very beginning, we’ve also supported the unprecedented, even historic grassroots movement that led to huge numbers of people stepping forward to actively participate in our democracy, even if it was only just to vote on this single issue. We supported the movement, but not their bill. We applaud the people’s actions, but not the results. Mark Sheehan, an official in the SHAKA movement, which spearheaded the bill, says they’ll definitely appeal. “The judge’s ruling has invalidated the constitutional right of 23,000 voters on Maui,” said Sheehan in an email sent out this afternoon. “Our attorneys are seeking justice through appeals.” Hilariously, the Honolulu StarAdvertiser reported on June 30 that “Maui County spokesman Rod Antone says the county will abide by the judge’s ruling.” Well, duh–most County officials hated the bill from the beginning, and Mayor Alan Arakawa publicly opposed it during the 2014 campaign. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

HAWAII GOES TO WAR OVER TELESCOPES

U.S. SUPREME COURT RULES SAME-SEX MARRIAGE LEGAL Same-sex marriage is legal everywhere in the U.S., now and forever. That’s according to the U.S. Supreme Court, which handed down its historic 5-4 ruling on Friday, June 26 in the case Obergefell v. Hodges. U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii, was pleased, to say the least, in this statement emailed out by his press office early on the morning of the big decision. “Today’s Supreme Court decision is a big win for gay rights, for civil rights, and for human rights,” Schatz said. “Every committed couple, whether they are gay or straight, deserves to be treated equally under the law. With this

historic ruling, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed what most Americans already know– the Constitution protects the rights of every American, regardless of who they love.” Congressional Representative Tulsi Gabbard, D–2nd District, would seem to agree with Schatz. “I applaud the Supreme Court’s ruling today,” she said in a statement emailed out a few hours after Schatz’s. “Some countries in the world are theocracies. Fortunately, the United States of America is not one of them. Therefore, as long as the government is involved in marriage, it must do so with fairness—treating all Americans equally. Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court is an important victory to this end.” The State of Hawaii legalized same-sex marriage in 2013 during a contentious Special Legislative Session called by thenGovernor Neil Abercrombie. Of course, news reports are already filling with quotes from bitter, fist-shaking Republican presidential candidates like Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum about how this is the end of all things holy, but screw that. My fear though is like the famous 5-4 Supreme Court ruling in Brown V. Board of Education, today only marks the beginning of what might be a long legal battle to get every court clerk in the U.S. to guarantee same-sex marriage. U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, D–Hawaii, would seem to agree. Here’s her statement, which was also released a few hours after the ruling:

Watching the battle over the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) on Mauna Kea and now the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) on Haleakala has reached nearly comical proportions. Especially over on the Big Island, where native Hawaiian discontent over the big scope–they say it is an unwarranted desecration of the sacred summit of Mauna Kea–has been building for years. Has Governor David Ige never seen civil disobedience before? Can he not recognize a rapidly mobilizing population when he sees one? It was early April of this year when protests on the Mauna Kea summit finally brought telescope construction to a halt. At the time, Ige put up his hands and called for healing–a “week” of healing. “This will give us some time to engage in further conversations with the various stakeholders that have an interest in Mauna Kea and its sacredness and its importance in scientific research and discovery going forward,” Ige said at the time. That was early April. If you haven’t noticed, there’s been no new telescope construction since then. Then on June 23, Mike McCartney, Ige’s Chief of Staff, sent out a press release stating that TMT construction would resume the next day. “It is our belief that there will be mutual respect and aloha on Wednesday and in the days ahead as TMT restarts construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope,” McCartney said. “TMT has the approvals needed to proceed with construction. We respect those who oppose the project and their right to peaceably assemble and to protest in an orderly and civil manner.” So just because one of Ige’s functionaries says the TMT construction is going forward, everything’s cool? And he worked all this out with the protestors? Of course he didn’t. McCartney’s press release was just hubris. The next day, to no one’s surprise, hundreds of native Hawaiians appeared on the summit. They’d also placed big boulders on the road. Cops arrested nearly a dozen protesters, but there was no construction that day. McCartney’s press release on June 24

reeked of failure–mostly, a complete failure to imagine the mindset of the protesters when they heard construction would resume. “We are disappointed and concerned that large boulders were found in the roadway leading to the summit of Mauna Kea,” stated McCartney. “This action is a serious and significant safety hazard and could put people at risk. Because of this, we are making an assessment to determine how to proceed. We will be working to clear the roadway tomorrow. Therefore, construction is on hold until further notice.” Undoubtedly emboldened by the protesters’ victory on Mauna Kea, a large group of locals gathered late Wednesday at the Maui Baseyard, where a convoy of equipment and supplies was preparing to drive up to Haleakala for work on the new Solar Telescope. For reasons of “public safety,” officials cancelled the convoy, giving the much smaller antitelescope forces on Maui their own victory. On Friday, Ige himself finally deigned to make his own statement. His tone was hurt, sure, but also aggressive. “We are a patient people in Hawai‘i,” Ige said. “We listen to and understand differing points of view, and we respect the many cultures of this land, especially that of the host culture. I have done my very best to follow this process in the case of Mauna Kea and set forth a way forward that I believe is reasonable.” That was the hurt part. Now here’s the part where throws down the gauntlet:

“And then we saw more attempts to control the road,” Ige said. “That is not lawful or acceptable to the people of Hawai‘i. So let me be very direct: The roads belong to all the people of Hawai‘i and they will remain open. We will do whatever is necessary to ensure lawful access.” Look, let’s really think this through: Hawaii is going to war over telescopes. If there’s a better expression of nerdom, I can’t think of it. Yes, it’s wonderful that the Hawaiian sovereignty movement is finding their voice. But their targets––tools of astronomical research–are the most benign and serene expressions of Western civilization. Unlike, say, the Barking Sands missile test range on Kauai or the resorts that line the Ka‘anapali coast, the TMT and DKIST have no military or commercial uses. They are designed simply and solely to increase humanity’s knowledge of the universe. Yes, native Hawaiians and their culture have long faced tragedy. Their anger is both reasonable and justifiable. But the loss of these two new telescopes will also be a tragedy–one the State of Hawaii seems unable to stop–at least until court challenges against the two scopes come to a conclusion.

These colors don't run

“Today’s ruling is a moment for celebration, an opportunity to thank everyone who fought tirelessly to make today a reality, and a chance to reflect on the great strides that have been made,” Hirono said. “Today is also a time to recommit to fighting for full equality. Currently, federal law does not extend protections against employment discrimination to LGBT Americans, and though some states have rectified the omission at the state level, many have not. We need to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) at the federal level.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

David MacIlwraith

David MacIlwraith has recently been named general manager of Travaasa Hana resort. MacIlwraith comes to his new position from the historic Volcano House in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park near Hilo, where he oversaw lodging, dining, retail operations, campgrounds and cabins. Prior to his work on the Big Island, MacIlwraith was general manager at Death Valley National Park in California. He’s also worked for the national park concession companies and Vail Resorts. “We are thrilled David MacIlwraith has joined our leadership team in this important position,” said Adam Hawthorne, the president of Travaasa Experiential Resorts. “Along with his extensive hospitality and business experience, his track record of success in Hawaii makes him uniquely qualified to be the steward of Travaasa Hana as we invest in developing

JUCKER SKATEBOARD HELPS SAVE HONOLUA COALITION Maui-based Jucker Hawaii introduced a new longboard skateboard to support the Save Honolua Coalition. Since the purchase of Lipoa Point by the State of Hawaii, many people think Honolua has been saved, said company co-founder Mike Jucker. That’s a misconception, according to Tamara Paltin, president of Save Honolua Coalition. “This is just the beginning, now we must consider and discuss long term sustainable management of the land,” Paltin said. “As a community we need to contin-

ue to be involved in both the planning and implementation of malama ‘aina or taking care of this much loved area.” Community involvement and donations to cover operational costs remain important components to continue advocacy for Honolua. Jucker said the timing is perfect to step in and provide support for the coalition’s important work. “To work with Tamara and the Coalition has been in the back of my head for a long time,” Jucker said. We started talking about creating a board to benefit the Honolua Coalition last summer, he said. Jucker Hawaii introduced its new longboard skateboard, named Pono, in mid-June after many months of development. The board was introduced at Honolua Bay during a recent ceremony and blessing attended by Paltin and Jucker–along with Makahiva Thompson, friend and cultural adviser to Jucker Hawaii. A portion of proceeds from each Pono board sold will go directly to the Save Honolua Coalition. Since its release, Jucker has raised $900 for the coalition. “We are very happy with the initial $900 donation from Jucker Hawaii,” said Paltin. “We hope and pray for the success of this board.” Jucker said he’s very happy to be able to give back to the community–not only by raising money, but also by sending a message to those who will enjoy riding the board. Doing things the right way, respecting the culture and the land, is essential for doing business and living in Hawaii, he said. “’Be pono, do the right thing’ is already a popular phrase and it is our hope that the skateboard will help to strengthen this message amongst people who live here and people who visit, especially in the board rider community,” he added. In addition to raising money, Jucker Hawaii is helping spread the word about the Save Honolua Coalition by attaching a tag with the organization’s mission statement to every board.

SEN. HIRONO HONORS PATSY MINK June 23 marked the 43rd anniversary of the Title IX–the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity Education Act. Named in 2002 for the Maui-born legislator who fought gender discrimination in school and had helped get Title IX passed during her years in Congress. Here’s the text of a statement U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono released today in her honor: “Forty-three years later, the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity Education Act, or Title IX, continues to open the door of opportu-

nity and level the playing field for millions of girls in academics and athletics,” Hirono said. “This groundbreaking legislation wouldn’t have been possible without my friend and inspiration Patsy T. Mink, who wrote and fought tirelessly to pass Title IX. “Throughout her life, Patsy was a trailblazer despite facing discrimination and was selflessly committed to increasing opportunities for all Americans. Before she was the first woman of color to serve in Congress and the first Asian American to run for President, she was rejected from medical school because

the physical property to meet the high standards already being set by the team.” MacIlwraith—who now lives in Hana–will oversee all Hana-based operations for Travaasa, which is located at what is considered “the end” of the famous Road to Hana. The original property opened in 1946 and became a favorite retreat for generations of travelers seeking barefoot elegance, unspoiled natural beauty and a Hawaiian sense of place. Travaasa Experiential Resorts states that the company’s philosophy is to provide an escape for those looking to experience something new, enrich their lives and immerse themselves in local traditions, which pays tribute to the hotel’s original intention. The Travaasa portfolio currently includes two properties: Travaasa Austin, an Austin, Texas hotel which opened in May 2011 in Texas Hill Country and Travaasa Hana, Maui, which opened in June 2011.

she was a woman. Later in her life while she was serving in Congress, Patsy saw her own daughter denied admission from Stanford because of gender-based quotas. Patsy understood the importance of righting these wrongs in our educational system and overcame opposition to pass Title IX in 1972. “Because of Title IX, millions of girls compete in athletics and in the classroom, but we all have an obligation to pick up where Patsy left off and continue the fight for women’s equality in education, in the workplace, and in political office. Women are underrepresented in critical fields such as science and technology and still do not receive equal pay for equal work. I am proud to have known Patsy T. Mink and to have called her my friend, and I will fight to see her legacy protected and expanded for new generations of women and girls.” Hirono has also called for Mink to appear on the new $10 bill, according to a June 10 Politico story. -Anthony Pignataro ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

News Of The Weird THAT NEW YORK ATTITUDE Gregory Reddick, 54, and his employer, SJQ Sightseeing Tours, filed a lawsuit in June against New York City for “harass[ing]” them and hampering their ability to rip off tourists, specifically, interfering with their “right” to sell tickets for $200 or more for trips on the Staten Island Ferry–which is actually free to ride. Reddick was wearing an (unauthorized) “Authorized Ticket Agent” jacket when arrested, and according to a New York Post account, believes he operates legally because he misunderstands a technicality in a 2013 court case. Prosecutors, who described the waterfront tourist-exploitation scene as “the wild west,” found Reddick with seven dates of birth, five aliases and six Social Security numbers.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Doctors at a hospital in Dongyang, China, removed 420 kidney stones from a single patient in June (a “Mr. He”). One of the surgeons told reporters that a soy-heavy diet of tofu was probably to blame. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most stones removed from one kidney during surgery (in India in 2009 in a three-hour operation) is (this is not a misprint) 172,155.

NOT SO GREAT ART In May, the Museum of Modern Arts in Krakow, Poland, began showing a video of naked men and women entering a room and playing a game of tag–then revealing that that particular room was actually a building in a Holocaust gas-chamber facility in Auschwitz. The idea, apparently, was to bring three affected nations (Poland, Germany and Israel) together, and among the sponsors of the exhibit was the Israeli embassy in Warsaw, despite criticism that the work was somewhat “repulsive and offensive.” A similar project opened in Tartu, Estonia, in February, but was closed almost immediately after objections from Jewish-advocacy organizations.

CHINA CHEATS BETTER THAN US?! U.S. students may be clever, but they apparently badly trail Chinese students in the genius of cheating on exams. The government’s newest anti-fraud weapon, employed recently in the city of Luoyang during the crucial university-determining tests, is a six-propeller drone that can hover above a cavernous exam hall, trying to pinpoint the locations inside in which designated ace test-takers are radiotransmitting correct answers to their clients, whose tiny earbuds are worn deep in ear canals. Cheating students also use beverage-bottle cameras, ordinary-appearing eyeglasses that can scan and transmit images, and fingerprint film (to fool fingerprint scanners that otherwise would root out test-taking “ringers”).

DRUG DEALER REWARDS CARDS France’s daily La Provence reported in May that at least one enterprising drug dealer in

Marseilles had begun distributing “loyalty cards” to its best customers, offering a 10-euro discount on future sales after that customer’s card was full (all 10 squares stamped from previous sales). Said one buyer, “I thought I was hallucinating. I thought I was at a pizzeria or something.” The card also expressed thanks for the patronage and reminded the customer of operating hours (11am to midnight).

Newby had parked at the courthouse that day in order to attend her hearing on charges that on May 26, she had locked her kids in a hot car while she was out on errands.

WAIT WHAT Two students at Florida’s Valencia College filed a federal lawsuit in May against the school and three instructors for forcing them to undergo “transvaginal probes” as part of their sonography (ultrasound) curriculum. According to the lawsuit, the school insisted that students learn the probing on each other because, as an instructor said, “Experience is the best teacher.” The plaintiffs also charged that some instructors and a student leader (dubbed the “TransVag Queen”) made inappropriate, sexualized comments about bodies during the demonstrations. Though the school defended the practice initially, it ordered the live probes halted about a week after the lawsuit was filed and announced lessons would in the future be conducted on simulators.

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS Luis Cruz, 46, sought pre-trial release in Springfield, Massachusetts, in June–even though he had been charged with heroin distribution and even though his rap sheet, counting his record in Florida, was 52 pages long. His court-appointed lawyer, Anna Levine, was not deterred, arguing that bail was not necessary to assure that her client would appear for trial because none of the 52 pages, she said, contained an arrest for failure to appear. Said Levine, earnestly, “It’s a 52-page record for showing up.”

TEACHERS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN Some parents of Encinal High School students, in Alameda, California, demanded an investigation in June after learning from a counselor at an after-school program that students had been “assigned” the extracredit project of rummaging through their parents’ bedrooms looking for sex toys (and bringing in a “selfie” holding one). Administrators told parents that the “assignment” was not a requirement of the course but could not ascertain how many students actually presented show-and-tells to the class. ■

You yell at kids and tell others what the rules are like you have some sort of authority over everyone. We’re all here trying to enjoy our time on this wonderful island. But all you two do is ruin everyone’s vacation with your arrogant, holier-than-thou attitude. If you can’t muster any aloha spirit perhaps you should return to the Mainland where you came from. Guests and other owners are so tired of you we could probably get a collection going to pay for your airfare back home. In fact, guests and owners have gone as far as scheduling their vacations when they know you two will be on the Mainland. Get off your high horse and learn to respect this island, the local people, other condo owners and guests. ■

Maui finally honors its African-American history By Anthony Pignataro

F

or better or worse, we all live in historic times. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex marriage is every bit as protected by the Constitution as hetero marriage. The flying of Confederate battle flags at state capitols across the South–an act begun in the mid-20th century in response to the Civil Rights movement–may finally be ending. And everywhere on the Mainland, the fact that disproportionate numbers of African-American suspects get shot and killed by law enforcement (or merely put into prison) is finally making sustained headlines, grisly, often tragic headlines though they may be. History tells us, all of us, that it’s never been easy time to be black in America. Enshrined in the very Constitution (where it would remain until after the Civil War) was the “compromise” that a black person was just three-fifths as important, as vital, as human as a white person. It would take the most murderous war in American history to end the practice of

slavery (which, let no one tell you otherwise, started because the Southern states feared abolition), but weak post-war Reconstruction allowed both brutal Jim Crow discrimination and savage Ku Klux Klan death squads to terrorize African-Americans throughout the South for another century. For blacks, these remain violent times. Nine African-Americans were recently murdered in a Charleston, South Carolina church by a white supremecist; unknown arsonists have also apparently attacked four predominently black churches. It’s fitting that on Tuesday, June 30, about a hundred people showed up in Kepaniwai Park to watch the organization African Americans on Maui unveil a new monument that pays tribute to the historical contributions that African-Americans have made in Hawaii. It honors individuals who aren’t well known like Betsey Stockton, and others more popular like President Barack Obama. “It’s taken 10 years of meetings to make this happen,” Dr. Ayin Adams, a historian who’s written about African-Americans

in Hawaii. “Mayor Alan Arakawa has been instrumental. It’s been slow change, but there is change.” There are, according to the most recent census, about a thousand African-Americans living in Maui County (Adams says there are probably another 300 or so that weren’t counted in the census). Though Hawaii and Maui are among the most ethnically diverse places on earth, the contributions of African-Americans in Hawaii aren’t well known. “Many of my international students had no idea about African-Americans,” Gwyn Gorg, a former UH Maui College teacher and current president of African Americans on Maui, told me about a week before the unveiling. “Some expressed fear of AfricanAmerican men, based on what they’d heard. We need to educate people about the importance of African-Americans.” The first black man arrived in Hawaii even before the missionaries. Named “Black Jack” or “Mr. Keaka‘ele‘ele,” he was living on Oahu in 1796 when Kamehameha I

conquered the island. Later, he built a stone house for Queen Ka‘ahumanu in Lahaina. Many African-Americans arrived on Maui at the turn of the 20th century, when Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar recruited 200 or so of them to work in the sugar fields. At the time, Adams wrote, “working conditions [in Hawaii] were in many ways worse than in the South.” Their impending arrival led to much discussion in the pages of The Maui News, according to Yvonne Moore’s book Black Pioneers in Blue Hawaii. The language the paper used was, at best, incredibly ignorant and condescending. “They should only be brought in limited numbers at first, and every plantation which uses them should also secure the services of a white man from the south who knows and understands Negroes, and leave their management largely in his hands,” the paper editorialized at the time, according to Moore. “It must also be remembered that as a class they are easily led by kind hands, and they instinc-

tively look upon their employers as their friends… The better element of them will not come at first, but if they find it all right here, the very best class of them will come. All that is then to be feared is a stampede from the south to the Islands.” Of course, as Moore points out, there was no stampede. And while Hawaii was certainly a great deal more multicultural and tolerant than the southern states, African-Americans still faced discrimination not meted out to other races. “Even in Hawaii,” Adams wrote of the 1940s, “the African-American soldier, sailor, marine, civilian, war worker, or nurse was expected to have their place in the back of the bus, or in special sections of restaurants.” Never underestimate the racial complexity of modern Hawaii. Indeed, Adams even told me that in 1947, the members of the NAACP’s chapter here were predominantly Japanese, not African-American. In my too-brief research for this story, four names stood out. Their contributions in shaping Maui, Hawaii and the rest of the nation remain with us to this day:

Betsey Stockton

William F. Crockett Born in Virginia in 1859 (or perhaps 1860), Crockett was a prominent African-American attorney. He and his family moved to Hawaii around 1901. According to Adams’ book, Crockett began work on Maui as an attorney at Hawaiian

Like Crockett, Maples moved to Maui around 1901 to work for HC&S, which recruited him to work as a doctor for the 200 or so African-Americans at the plantation. According to Moore’s book, Maples worked for HC&S for 30 years, and even later opened a drug store in Wailuku, though Adams’ book states that his responsibilities at the HC&S hospital in Puunene forced him to close the store after just a few years. Moore’s book also contains a fascinating bit of information about Maples’ brother Samuel, who was an attorney also working at HC&S. Moore’s book reprints a letter to the editor of The Maui News, dated Jan. 12, 1917 and written by S. R. Maples, whom Moore believes to be Samuel. The letter attacked the News for a viciously racist editorial titled “Filipinos and Citizenship” that had run the previous day and included the line, “But it isn’t good sense to admit an unlettered barbarian from the wilds of Africa to the privileges of American citizenship…” To say the least, S.R. Maples was outraged. “The simple fact of being an educated gentlemen does not make one a loyal citizen; he may have other loves,” S. R. Maples wrote. “But as for the African or his descendent in America, he has proved his loyalty. Proved it at Bunker Hill where Crispus Attux was among the first of the patriots to shed his blood in the revolution. Proved it at New Orleans with Jackson, and in Lake Erie with Perry. Proved it under Grant; in Cuba, and in Mexico. In fact there has been no scene of death, hardship or

“I’m still an idealist, though I thought it would be so much better today. But when I see horrors, I know that I just have to work continuously to make things better.” Commercial & Sugar, representing the few hundred black workers at the sugar plantation in Spreckelsville. At a time when blacks throughout the U.S. were, at best, having a tough time even getting to the polls and at worst getting lynched for trying to participate in government, Crockett eventually became a district attorney for Maui, judge and member of the territorial Legislature. Their son, Wendell F. Crockett, also worked as an attorney on Maui, as well as judge and member of the territorial Legislature. And his son, William F. Crockett, is today a prominent attorney on Maui, and still practices law in Wailuku (he was also married to Linda Lingle from 1986 to 1997, during which time she served first as Maui County Council member and later as mayor.).

William Lineas Maples Maples was a physician. Born in Tennessee in 1869, just a few years after the end of the Civil War, Maples graduated from Howard University’s medical department in 1892, according to writer Yvonne Moore’s Black Pioneers in Blue Hawaii . Though he was a trained, practicing physician, Moore writes that during the Spanish-American War Maples served as a hospital steward as part of the all-black Third Regiment of the North Carolina Volunteers.

danger to the Republic that he has not met whether in peace or war.” Moore’s research shows that The Maui News immediately apologized for the slur.

Alice Ball Perhaps the most notable individual on this list, Ball was also certainly the most tragic. A chemist who received her master’s degree from the University of Hawaii–the first woman and first African-American to do so–she helped revolutionize medical knowledge by pioneering a new way to treat victims of Hansen’s Disease while still in her early 20s, though it would take many decades for history to recognize her efforts. “During her laboratory research, she discovered a breakthrough for Hansen’s Disease,” Adams wrote. “The discovery brought relief to many patients who were suffering from the disease.” But “the knowledge of Alice Ball’s research remained unknown for more than 80 years, before it was coincidentally discovered during a literature search. She unfortunately did not receive recognition, or the acknowledgements and honor she was later to receive, because she died in 1916 at the young age of 24.” It wasn’t until 2007 that the University of Hawaii posthumously awarded Ball a Regent’s Medal of Distinction.

African Americans on Maui is a tiny nonprofit organization. But their vision is as large as the biggest ideal that helped formed America: “The AAOMA includes and counts all races and ethnicities,” states the organization’s official mission statement. “AAOMA does not exclude any person from being a member or learning about the heritage. AAOMA shall remain all inclusive, never exclusive. Each individual shall have the right to learn, participate, and share in the rich legacy, history, culture and the arts of African Americans.” The organization even offers tours of Maui that highlight the contributions of African-Americans–contributions which are still being made to this day. I’ve attended many a public meeting on Wailuku community matters that included a tall African-American in a cowboy hat. That’s John Stan Rippy, a Philadelphia native who moved to Maui in 1977. According to Adams’ book, when Rippy bought Molina’s Bar in Wailuku in 1994, he became the first African-American to get a liquor license in Maui County. His wife Lorraine also holds the distinction of being the first African-American cosmetologist to open a salon on Maui, according to Adams. Another African-American, Byrant Neal, directs the Story of Hawaii Museum, located at the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center. And who could forget Martin Charles Hennessey. Born in the Bronx in 1969 and named for Martin Luther King, Jr., Hennessey is better known these days as Marty Dread, Maui’s “Reggae Ambassador” and one of the island’s most popular musicians. Much remains to be done, of course, in the quest for true civil rights. Life is getting better, but the violence of racism remains a real problem, especially against AfricanAmericans. But for someone like Gorg, it just means there’s more work to be done. “I’m still an idealist,” Gorg told me. “Though I thought it would be so much better today. But when I see horrors, I know that I just have to work continuously to make things better.”

Stockton is considered the first known African-American woman in Hawaii. Her time in the islands–and on Maui–was limited to just a few years, but her impact was remarkable. In her book, Adams calls Betsey Stockton “an intelligent and dignified ex-slave of the President of Princeton University. In 1820, Stockton accompanied the family of missionary Charles Stewart–one of the earliest such missionaries to arrive in Hawaii–on the vessel Thames. She soon made her way to Lahaina, where she helped found what we’d now call a public school, where Lahainaluna High School now stands. “She quickly learned the Hawaiian language and was one of the founders of the Lahainaluna School on Maui, probably the first school for commoners, where she spent two years as a teacher of English, Latin, History and Algebra (1823-25), before her untimely return to the East Coast due to the illness of Mrs. Stuart,” Adams wrote, who also noted that Stockton had even taught Princess Nahi‘ena‘ena how to read and write. “She is well remembered for her high moral and religious character and her helping to heal the sick while on Maui.” By 1825, states the book African American Lives (edited by Henry Louis Gates),

the presses at the school Stockton helped found had printed more than 78,000 spelling books. A year after that, 8,000 Hawaiians had gotten instruction there. “Stockton distinguished herself in Lahaina by offering education to the common people instead of erecting schools only for the alii (chiefs, or nobility),” states African American Lives. In her book, Adams makes no attempt to conceal her deserved admiration for Stockton. “Betsey Stockton was an uncommon woman for any age,” Adams wrote. “She started from a position subordinate many times over–slave, domestic, and black unmarried woman–but with intelligence, faith and perseverance, she soared above society’s restrictions to play influential roles in the lives of diverse groups of people; the beloved children of her family, the Hawaiians, and the children of her own race still fighting to melt the chains of bondage with the fire of education. She was exceptional in all her skills–nurse, missionary, teacher, principal, and surrogate mother–a shining example and role model for any place and time.”

I

was rushing like a maniac. I had it in my mind to eat fish and chips at Eskimo Candy in Kihei but I was tormented by having failed at earlier attempts. They aren’t open on the weekends; they don’t keep late hours. But their Seafood Market and Cafe is open Monday through Friday, 10:30am to 7pm, and today I was going to make it happen. This make-or-break seafood feast started at the sneakiest of locations–Wai Wai Street in Kihei. If you’re coming off the Pi‘ilani Highway, it’s a little hook off Lipoa; if you’re on South Kihei Road, just come down Hale Kuai Street. Once found, it’s a seafood oasis festooned like Davy Jones’ Locker. It’s a snug little climate-controlled galley of high top chairs and colorful chalkboard menus. You counter order and seat yourself. There’s also an outdoor area with more tables, but I couldn’t get enough of the sharks, pirates and deep sea decor so I ate inside. Since it’s also a fish market, there are cases displaying cuts of fish, poke, shrimp, lobster tails and even New York cut steaks. The poke bowl here is $11.99 and is a combination of their four pokes–shoyu, wasabi, furikake and spicy tuna–with a little seaweed salad. For a few bucks more I had mine served over a magnificent mix of organic Kula field greens instead of rice. The poke bowl was tasty but I was here for the fish and chips. Eskimo Candy is a veritable emporium of fried seafood. There are fish and coconut shrimp combos, tempura battered shrimp, oysters, calamari and scallops. If you want fish, you can have ono, mahi or opakapaka. You can also choose between frozen and freshly caught. All the fried dishes come with their succulent cole-

slaw and a generous pile of French fries. They range from $9.95 to $14.95 (all fresh fish options vary with market prices). I ordered the fresh caught mahi, deep fried in their light tempura batter. My order consisted of four large chunks of mahi served over fries and the coleslaw. The plate was heaping and steaming hot. The batter was so delicious that it coats the fish in a light blanket, adding a bit of texture and making it easy to grab and dip in their house-made Tartar sauce. The fish is as tasty as it gets, fresh and flakey, and it really satisfied that fried fresh craving I’d been holding onto. The seafood extravaganza doesn’t stop there. Eskimo Candy also offers fish burgers, sautéed or broiled fish, seafood pasta with shrimp, scallops, fish, Shrimp Scampi and clams in cream sauce with garlic bread. They also offer ribs, chicken, wraps and Angus beef burgers. Their menu is large and party-friendly with fried fish baskets holding 13 pieces. Other appetizers include steamers and crab cakes. The menu hits the $7.95 to $16.95 range, with keiki items priced from $5.95 to $7.95. Eskimo Candy Seafood Market and Cafe opened in 2003, but owner Jeff Hansen has been building his Eskimo Candy seafood wholesale business since the late 1980s after an Alaskan fishing trip. I’ve long been seeing the large mural-painted Eskimo Candy trucks on the roads, busy delivering their seafood to restaurants and resorts. The girls at the counter told me that Mondays and Fridays are their busiest days because they’re closed on the weekends, but I also noticed a 5pm rush of people picking up fresh fish and poke for dinner, too. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Train Bar SEEING HAPA AT THE MILL HOUSE WAS A CHICKEN SKIN MOMENT

OWS H S T R NEW A MONTH! PHOTO BY CHELSEA HELLER

Chef Jeff Scheer and HAPA at the Mill House

I

f you go to Hapa’s Facebook page, they list their genre of music as “progressive aggressive beautiful Hawaiian,” a description that’s as unique as their show. This summer, Hapa is performing twice a week at the Mill House in Waikapu. I spent Tuesday, June 30, there and was blown away. I’ve seen Hapa and have been to the Mill House, but the latest incarnation of both gave me chicken skin. Barry Flanagan, the founder and lead guitarist of Hapa, tells stories between songs. He came to Maui in the 1980s to immerse himself in the art of Kiho Alu and Haku Mele. In 1994, Hapa release their self-titled album that remains their top selling recording and swept the Na Hoku Hano Hano awards that year. “May 24th, 1980, 3,500 people were at the Lahaina Civic Center for a 50th birthday party, and at the end of the night I got to witness Uncle Phil Secretario, Uncle Moon Keahi– these fantastic men–sit and serenade the workers with this beautiful Hawaiian music called Nahe Nahe,” Flanagan said during the show. “This stuff you have heard tonight is about as contemporary as it gets. I am from New Jersey–Irish, grandparents from Ireland. This music comes at you as contemporary Hawaiian. You have to go towards it.” Flanagan was flanked on stage by Kapono Na‘ili‘ili on guitar and Tarvin Lono O’shaugnessy Makia on bass. Radasha Ho‘ohuli-Tamure, who was crowned Miss Hawaii in 2005, danced the hula. Flanagan joked about Kapono’s youth, saying that he bought his guitar at Bounty Music in 1981 and Kapono was born nine months later. The guitar looks well loved, if not battered by use, with plenty of Hapa mana, but the lesson that Flanagan taught is that there will be generations of this music to come. Kapono, and other fluent Hawaiian speakers like him, are an important part of that. The band is fresh from a tour in Japan, where they played with different styles of music. In their Mill House show, they broke off on stage and Kapono jumped on a drum kit while Flanagan took up an electric guitar. Then they played incredible blues music, a la BB King. Hapa had a few other surprises for the audience, but I won’t give them all away.

Suffice it to say that Hapa has a stage presence and legacy that evolves on its own; a history I was thankful to see in person. As I walked around the tree-lined path around the Mill House, I noticed that the building has a deco architecture I never appreciated before. In fact, the Mill House has transformed its stage room so the sound and production is now solid and well-organized. The Hapa show was tight. They’ve also got their Train Bar rolling full steam ahead, and it’s open every day 3-8pm. The bar is fully retrofitted with a train caboose, engine and giant mill gears and is now a classy place to grab drinks and a bite. The outdoor tables and chairs look over a tranquil duck pond. The grounds have beautiful fountains and verdant scenery. The bartenders are knowledgeable and their drinks finely tuned. The campari and rum “Slack Key” cocktail was as good as described, and there were 10 mixologist-mades on the menu–I liked the additional graphic of the glass shape next to each. Both the show and the bar feature a tapas menu by Executive Chef Jeff Scheer. It’s a distinguished selection of ingredients found on the Maui Tropical Plantation property and elsewhere. Scheer’s creativity is hard to pin down, and I don’t really want to classify it. Dishes are slightly familiar, but retooled in presentation or syntax. Things like panisse and piperade, and desserts with candied chard in a posset. There was a time when Scheer’s dishes were only available at his Chef’s Table events once a month through his Maui Executive Catering kitchen in Haiku, so it’s exceptional that you can now experience his food at the Mill House, whether you’re at the Train Bar or at the show. June marked the soft opening for the restaurant, and as they get their gears oiled we can expect more exciting events in the future. Hapa plays Tuesday and Wednesday nights, doors open at 6pm with an opening act like talented Noa Geb the night we were there. Tickets are $60 or $75 for VIP, food and drinks are ordered ala carte. Call 808-244-7643 for reservations. ■

He's Back! Yet Again! Arnold Schwarzenegger is too creaky to save ‘Terminator: Genisys’ ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 125 Min.

A

31-year-old franchise returns with bold new upgrades, only some of which hit their mark. In Terminator Genisys, the fifth film in the series, John Connor (now played by Jason Clarke) sends Kyle Reese (played this time by Jai Courtney) to the past. Once Reese arrives in 1984, he finds his mission has changed, as Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones) is no damsel in distress but a ready, armed and capable soldier. She’s aware of Reese and, even more startling, has been protected by her loyal Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger, the only returning cast member), who she refers to as “Pops.” Genisys suffers from comparison to what came before it. The first half in particular is a collection of images and ideas recycled from the franchise. We should be stunned by the return of a liquid metal killer but the character is no longer novel and the actor playing him has none of the presence that made Robert Patrick so scary in T2. There’s lots of spectacular action, particu-

larly a climactic robot throw down that delivers. There’s also too much CGI, in a series that showcases state of the art special effects but never before has been so swamped in digital trickery (an irony, since the story involves a pixilated threat). There’s also more warmth here than in previous entries.Yet, I prefer the previous installments to this one, including the cold, grim but exciting Terminator Salvation and the fun, dynamic Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. A real problem with the latest installment is the lack of a great villain or a feeling of urgency. Oddly enough, this feels less like a nod to James Cameron and more an effort to turn this franchise into a Marvel movie, right down to a cliffhanger in the middle of the end-credits. The wild new twists to the original story and established time line can be fun but this is still over-plotted. Matt Smith, a former Doctor Who, plays a character so ill-defined, he barely registers. Recent Oscar winner J.K. Simmons has a funny supporting role and his scenes feel like they’re going somewhere, but they never do. The inevitable suggestion that his and Smith’s roles will “all make sense” in a hinted sequel doesn’t help, either. Once the second act kicks in, with Sarah

Looks like Arnold really let himself go

and Kyle in San Francisco of 2017, the story becomes less inevitable and more playful. However, there’s a crucial misstep in the change of motivation and identity for a central character. This drastic alteration is bold but doesn’t work. Emilia Clarke is especially winning and there is detectable chemistry between her and Courtney but the three young leads lack the essential intensity Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn and Christian Bale brought to Sarah, Kyle and John in previous entries. Jason Clarke (no relation to Emilia) is oddly lacking gravitas here, which wasn’t the case with his electrifying turn in Zero Dark Thirty. The fresh-faced leads don’t convey humans on the edge of sanity, knowing that they are literally the last hope for humankind. As for Schwarzenegger, he’s always fun

to watch and nails the moments that bring welcome humor to his iconic role. His recent role in Maggie, one of my favorite films of 2015, demonstrated he could act, movingly, in a risk-taking independent film. But here he’s playing it safe, relying on the quirks, self-conscious delivery and mannerisms that he’s established years ago. It’s worth noting that the introductory scenes, in which the humans vs. machines war is in its late stages, suggest this could be taken as a direct sequel to Terminator Salvation. Once the big narrative detour in the second act is unveiled, the willingness to take a chance and shake things up for longtime fans results in unsatisfying narrative risks. I suspect Schwarzenegger will always be back but it’s this franchise that has yet to fully return to form. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

This week’s theme: Cancer control issues. Unfortunately for your clutching instinct, the big juicy fish you’re embracing at the moment needs to be held loosely. Squeeze it too tightly and it’ll just freak out and wriggle free, back into the vast ocean, where you’ll never find, let alone recapture, it again. The only way to keep this baby close is to barely hold it at all. Don’t give it anything to struggle against, or you’ll quickly discover just how slippery those shiny scales are. It’s a tough choice: Will you keep this love close, on his or her terms, forsaking all your own? Or will you decide it’s your way or no way, and force this one to escape forever?

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Better watch your soul, it’ll leave you like a hundred bucks. So sings songwriter M. Ward, and I’d heed him if I were you. You’re likely to be presented with a myriad of temptations this week, all of which endanger your integrity; something much more important than you think, which you’d discover to your dismay once it became compromised. I’d rather you didn’t experience that dark and virtually irreversible revelation. Keep a tight rein on your activities and the things you agree to. Sleep on any big decisions, and if anyone pushes you to act faster than that, simply say no–regardless of what’s on offer.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

The Supreme Court finally making gay marriage legal nationwide is a great victory for our humanity. This long overdue measure feels great, not just for the queer community, but really anyone who cares about equality and civil rights. The opposition sounded an awful lot like the people who opposed interracial marriage just a handful of decades ago–horribly backwards and ignorant. Celebrate this and any move towards enlightenment and fairness this week–hopefully you’ll observe (or facilitate) a few more. #lovewins

Illusions abound this week. For example, we already know our country isn’t nearly as free as it pretends to be; kids are never as innocent or worldly as they present themselves; same goes for adults. There are layers and layers of glamour all around you; and each one has its own origin and intention. Your job this week (and every week, really) is to unravel these. See through them. Being a master of disguise and deception yourself, you’re more equipped than anyone else I know to pierce these veils and expose what’s behind them.

WED & FRI 7:30AM

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Virgos are generally kind, but your tongues have razor edges when you choose to wield them as weapons (which is, thankfully, rarely). However, the temptation to verbally flay those you despise, oppose, or merely look down upon (however secretly) will be virtually irresistible this week. You’ll be nearly as surprised as everyone else when the vitriol simply begins spewing from your mouth. Chances are, you won’t be able to stop this thing. Time for damage control. Steer this baby. Go ahead and give those guys the tongue-lashing they’ve evidently got coming to them. Just try not to say anything that’s going to completely burn bridges. Don’t exceed a light char and you’ll be doing just fine. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

The suspense (or lack thereof) is killing you. If your life were a novel, these chapters might bore the hell out of you, pertaining as they do to some sub-plot you have no interest in. However, even if you have the opportunity to skip ahead and read the end of the book this week, I beg you not to. You’d not only be missing out on a lot of good stuff (as well as more of this boring shit, I admit) in between, but you’d cheat yourself as well. Let me explain: The ending changes (or at least takes on a whole new meaning) when you have no idea what came before.

The other night at a club three total strangers approached me to tell me I was a good dancer. They weren’t even hitting on me; as far as I could tell, they had no ulterior agenda besides exchanging a friendly word. This is the kind of thing you can expect this week: sweet gestures from friends but also strangers, for no reason you can discern. Maybe they’re just trying to improve their own karma, or earn a metaphysical boy scout badge by doing good deeds. My advice is simple, and easy to follow: when someone is nice to you this week, simply accept it. Sometimes face value is exactly what it’s worth. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

When your dog comes in from outside reeking of whatever dead thing he was just rolling in, you don’t cast him out of your life forever. You might get annoyed or angry. But you give him a bath, then you forgive him and move on. Why, when an important human you know makes a similar “mistake,” do you consider leaving them by the wayside? Should they have known better? Absolutely. Will it happen again? Probably. Can you live with this? Actually, yes–provided you’re willing to let go of or alter some preconceptions you’ve held onto from day one. Do you want to lose some silly ideas, or a pretty great person (who’s just not perfect)?

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Love and sex don’t always line up for you. It’s special and rare when they mesh well into some kind of cohesive whole. That’s why I want you to treasure this week, because your heart and your genitals are on the same page for once. If you have someone to celebrate this with, well hallelujah. If you don’t, you at least have the chance to actually figure out what kind of person is going to take care of both these parts of you–which will also give you the chance of finally finding him or her. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

I’m particularly fond of genre-crossing media. Horror-comedy, western-sci-fi, fantasy-space opera, and so on. This kind of creative boundarycrossing and territory-mixing really gets me off, and works for a lot of other people, too. In other words, you’re in luck, because you’re the ultimate genre-mixer. You can’t help it; you’re in trouble whenever anyone asks you to be just one thing. Thankfully, more people are realizing that being just one thing is as dull as dishwater. All that care you’ve been taking to keep the chocolate out of the peanut butter? Screw it. It’s exactly that delicious combination we’re interested in.

Fine motor control is tricky for an ogre. And since this week the part of the violent, ham-handed giant is being played by you, be especially careful. What you intend as a gentle and friendly critique could easily turn into a full-on evisceration. A pat on the back is likely to crush those you want to congratulate. Turn down your intensity meter 90 percent. Tiptoe and whisper, or better yet, hold still, and allow everyone to approach on their own terms and in their own time, like timid forest creatures. They’re all fragile butterflies at the moment, compared to you. You could accidentally destroy them with a breath, a touch, or a word. You can’t help being an ogre, perhaps–but you can at least be a patient, peace-loving one. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You don’t usually cope well with disappointment, although you may hide your dismay expertly. It’s gotten so you get anxious whenever anyone promises to do anything for you, because you’re worried they’ll let you down. Luckily, this week, you can let your concerns go. Yes, you’re surrounded by flakes. But every once in a while they actually get their shit together and come through. Relax. This is one of those golden times when people will actually do what they say they’re going to do, and well. Leave them to it. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
