THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
WANTS FREE MARKET TO CONTROL MED. MARIJUANA If the law states that the growers will eventually have to be the only dispensaries and by 2018 only dispensaries can grow and sell, then obviously the black market will continue to flourish unabated (“Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Are Coming…,” July 9, 2015). The only way is to allow free market pressures to self-regulate such as having a nonprofit wholesale level where growers can sell their product at market driven prices who then turn around and sell to retailers who market at their market driven levels. Their licensing pricing is done on a square footage basis of storage for product on an annual basis and nowhere

near $50,000! I truly hate to get exclamatory about things, but when I see some annual fee for something like a booming market that is just coming out of century long retirement that is this ridiculous it just makes tears come out of me. Now that being said, the registration for the booming market a century ago may have had “paperwork,” but in the 21st century we have data and keyboards and credit cards. To register, one would go to the website, wherever that would be, and put in their proper information, including credit card, which stands for credit background because that’s how they got the card to begin with; if the bank didn’t give them credit, they didn’t have it. The cost for registration would be nothing more than governmental maintenance on IT systems that they would have to do anyway. Any increases would easily be added into the annual fees in cents and not dollars. You would see annual fees more like $100 and 10,000 applicants. Simple math. Now, it’s the applicant who has to wait the amount of time; how much ever that may be. What delays would there be? None. After all, if they pay their taxes and fees all on time without delays, it really doesn’t matter who they are. Bottom line is the black market would have nowhere to go, but good. Everyone would get all their money. Happiness would reign. And we’d stop fighting about this once and for all. -JP Grund, via email

MAUI NEWS GIVES KEITH REGAN’S CAMPAIGN A HUGE GIFT A lot of people got awards from the nonprofit organization African Americans on Maui at their June 30 ceremony in Kepaniwai Park in Iao Valley. The ceremony was to (finally) commemorate the historical accomplishments of AfricanAmericans in Hawaii history in the park that already honors other ethnic groups’ culture and traditions in Maui history. Mayor Alan Arakawa got a commendation, as did Maui County Councilmember Mike Victorino. Even county Managing Director Keith Regan, all for helping get the African-American history monument built. In fact, organization member Dr. Ayin Adams, who ran the ceremony,
campaign manager), then how come The Maui News couldn’t bring themselves to do so in their fawning July 13 story “‘People Who Made a Difference’ are joining forces?” It’s not like they didn’t know. The Maui News reported Regan’s candidacy on June 7; published a brief follow-up announcement on June 17 about an upcoming speaking engagement on his candidacy; and mentioned that he was running in a July 12 story on Joe Blackburn’s announcement that he would also, once again, run for Victorino’s County Council seat. But not the paper’s July 13 story, which centered on a group that Regan and his wife created nearly five months ago to bring together people who’ve been honored in the past by The Maui News in its annual “People Who Made a Difference”

Jeffrey Pearson, an engineer and water official with the County of Maui, got a big boost to his resume last week when Governor Ige announced that he’d soon take over as deputy to the chairperson of the state Commission on Water Resource Management as well as chief executive officer to the Commission. “Jeff Pearson is an experienced engineer and water system manager,” said Ige in a July 7 news release from his office. “He has the skills and experience needed to administer and implement the state’s water code and work with the Commission and various stakeholders to address the issues our state faces.” Given that Ige is himself a former engineer, Pearson’s appointment isn’t a huge surprise. For a professional engineer on Maui, Pearson’s credentials are legit: former water manager for the Maui Land & Pineapple Co. and former County of Maui Department of Water Supply Deputy Director. He’s also previously worked with Norman Saito Engineering, Sato & Associates and Brown and Caldwell. But Pearson is also very different from his predecessor, William Tam. An attorney appointed back in 2010 by then-Governor Neil Abercrombie, Tam was very popular with local environmentalists (he even helped write the state’s water code in the 1980s, according to an April 23, 2015 story in Honolulu Civil Beat). Of course, a majority of the state Water Commission still has to vote on Pearson, and that is scheduled to take place on July 15, after press time.
tions, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported on July 9. A few months ago, the Army had threatened to move 20,000 soldiers out of Hawaii, which made nearly every state official (except Maui Rep. Kaniela Ing) howl in protest. All things considered, the reduction in personnel could have been more significant and we are pleased with the outcome,” said David Carey, the chairman of the Hawaii Military Affairs Council (a group set up by the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce), in a July 9 statement. “This is good news for the state, as the military is a major economic contributor, supporting more than 100,000 jobs and generating $12.2 billion for the state’s economy.” On the same day, Hawaii Governor David Ige also said he was “pleased” that the reductions were less than feared, though he added that he will remain vigilant. “We continue to monitor the potential loss of some of our civilian workforce and an additional round of planned reductions in 2017,” Ige said in a July 9 news release from his office. “My administration will make the retention of our current force levels a priority.” Retention? So Ige’s a military strategist now? Hey, here’s an idea–try focusing on alternative industries and economic goals that might perhaps lead the state away from the military-industrial teat, rather than cling the state’s imperial past. Because if recent Washington budget history is any guide, all the arms services will be facing even more cuts in the coming years. In any case, the Army’s reduction plan will trim its force by 40,000 troops, the Army Times reported yesterday. The largest cuts will take place at Fort Benning in Georgia and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, according to that paper.
Keith
even mentioned that Regan would be running for Victorino’s County Council seat in the next election (term limits will prevent Victorino from running again in 2016). If a tiny organization like African Americans on Maui can see fit to mention Regan’s candidacy (which he announced via a June 5 email from Lynn Araki-Regan, his wife/

issue (both Keith and Lynn have received such a distinction in the past). “Selfless and generous Maui residents honored by The Maui News have joined forces to do more in their community,” The Maui News reported on July 13. “In February, the two gathered as many past Maui News honorees as they could find. With many honorees being heads of nonprofits and nonprofit volunteers, the group came up with holding a festival featuring Maui’s nonprofits and community resources.” And so on. Sure, the Regans created the group before Keith’s official announcement, but doing so has proven a very shrewd move. And through Regan’s running for office next year isn’t mentioned, the story is a huge gift to his campaign, if for no other reason than to tie his name to adjectives like “selfless” and “generous.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Hawaii Girls Court aspires to keep young women in the juvenile system from returning to trouble’s door. With this in mind, on June 16 the court recently flew eight girls and four court officials from Oahu to Maui for a three-day, two-night hike in the Haleakala crater. Plunking the group down in one of the island’s most serene and environmentally sensitive areas may seem like an unusual way to combat recidivism, but the outreach program is dedicated to strengthening the participants instead of merely correcting them. “I learned that I really was blind from the start,” said one participant in a July 2 Haleakala National Park news release. “I was so busy with everything that was going on I forgot about the beauty in life.” The wilderness immersion program produced a number of other benefits, including meaningful relationships, modesty and a sense of accomplishment as the girls hiked over eight miles of rugged terrain, which involved 2,000 feet of elevation change. On top of this feat, the group cooked their own food and removed invasive plants around the Silversword Loop Trail. “My greatest experience at Haleakala was being able to live with no electricity
or very little water,” one participant said. “It helped me to connect with everyone better and see what it’s like to live without those things.” The National Park Service funded the trip, enabling the group to learn about Hawaiian species and ecology, Hawaiian culture and even themselves from (female) National Park Service staff. The “strength-based model” the Girls Court operates on proves to be successful in its statistics, showing a 47 percent drop in crime relapse. This percentage also accounted for 60 percent less runaways and 63 percent less arrests. Many of the female offenders in the court are victims of physical or sexual abuse and physical violence, so the program incorporates open court sessions, offenders/parents groups, group activities, mental health services, education and employment guidance, community service projects, and crosssystem training to guide the girls back on the right track. The programs have been much more effective than the traditional punishment of confinement in a Detention Home, repairing relationships with girls and their families. The Girls Court labels itself as a “laboratory court” for its experimental nature, one of the first of its kind in the nation according to the Hawaii Girls Court website. With the female adoles-
The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center (NVMC) recently conveyed a protected parcel of land in a densely developed section of Wailuku to the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust (HILT). The protected 4.5-acre open space parcel will serve as the location for a future peace park honoring veterans. The land, located between the NVMC building and the Kanaloa Avenue and Kahului Beach Road intersection, was conveyed by the NVMC to HILT on July 1. HILT will eventually open the land for public passive recreation by turning the property into a peace park honoring veterans. A nature trail, small public parking area, picnic tables, benches, and informational signage will be installed amongst other efforts on the land such as removing invasive plant species and introducing more native species. The coastal land has various conservation values which benefit the community. The 4.5-acre parcel affords numerous passerbys and residents in the area scenic vistas. The property also has historical and cultural values; there are two known historic sites on the property, including a Hawaiian cultural site and the remnants of the Kahului Railroad’s rock crusher which operated from 1921 to 1946 when the facility was damaged by a tsunami.
“We have been very honored to work with the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center on this project,” said Ted Clement, HILT Executive Director. “On behalf of the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, I want to thank the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center for donating the land to us. I also want to thank our very generous donors who gave us the funds to receive the land, build the basic park infrastructure and steward the land long-term so that this strategically located coastal property can serve as a future peace park honoring veterans.” The lead gift was provided by The Freeman Foundation; other leadership gifts were provided by Mary Sanford, Paul Mizoguchi, David and Judith Fukuda, Hiroshi Arisumi, Alexander and Baldwin Kokua Giving program, and Matson. “I would further like to thank HILT’s Director of Conservation/Maui Island Director Scott Fisher for his work on the project,” said Ted Clement, HILT Executive Director. The property where the peace park will sit also has water resource values in that the land serves as a natural filter strip from runoff heading towards Kahului Bay. The land also has some wildlife habitat values and contains native plants such as Naupaka. “NVMC is excited about the preservation of this open space as a peace park honoring all Maui veterans and is happy to donate the property to HILT for this purpose,” said Brian Moto, NVMC’s president. “We respect HILT’s distinguished record of land stewardship and conservation, and believe that our collaboration will result in a lasting tribute to our veterans.”

The Japanese, especially, report a decline of intimacy (for instance, a recent estimate found that about a quarter of 30-year-olds had never had sex with another person)–convenient for a Kyoto research institute’s announcement in June that it had developed a huggable, humansized, featureless pillow (resembling Casper the Friendly Ghost), with skinlike texture, to serve as an embraceable intimacy substitute. For people with actual lovers, the “Hugvie” (retailing for the equivalent of $80) has a mouth slot for a cellphone to enable running sweet talk with a remote “companion.”

The enormous compensation CEOs of large corporations receive is justified in part by their bringing prosperity to their shareholders, but last year (an excellent one for most investors), two of the nation’s best-paid chief executives “earned” handsome raises despite presiding over losses: Philippe Dauman of Viacom Inc. (paid $44.3 million, stock lost 6.6 percent) and Jeffrey Immelt of General Electric (an 88 percent raise to $37.3 million, stock lost 6.7 percent). CEO Steven Newman of Transocean earned only $14.2 million, according to a June Wall Street Journal report, but that was a 2.2 percent boost– for stewardship that resulted in one of 2014’s biggest flops–Transocean’s 59.9 percent loss for its shareholders.

In a recent BBC documentary, the son of renowned cosmologist Stephen Hawking (Tim, now 36) revealed that his dad is “hugely competitive” and showed him “no compassion at all” when he was growing up. Tim said two of his few avenues of coping with such a famous, oblivious father were when he used to race around in his dad’s specialized (and expensive) wheelchair (pretending it was a go-kart) and, for those deliciously
awkward moments, adding cuss words to his father’s synthesized speech software.
LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Jihadists governing ISIS’ Euphrates province recently outlawed the popular hobby of breeding pigeons and threatened violators with flogging and imprisonment. The ban was initially thought to be aimed at frustrating pigeon-messaging to the outside world, but the published prohibition mentions other justifications– the hobby’s frivolity (wasting time that could better be spent praying) and the special offense to God (because pigeons are “uncovered,” with exposed genitals).
GOD IS LOVE In a June YouTube video reported by various news sites, Tempe, Arizona, pastor Steven Anderson (Faithful Word Baptist Church) prayed for God to “rip out the heart” of Caitlyn Jenner, for whom Anderson expresses “a perfect hatred” for announcing she was no longer Bruce. And on his 700 Club TV program in June, Pat Robertson patiently explained to a grieving mother why God could have allowed her three-year-old son to die of illness–that God saw the big picture and knew, for instance, that the kid could have become a serial killer or contracted a hideous disease, and that she should be relieved that God took him early.
AEROBATIC DRIVERS A 79-year-old woman in Markgroeningen, Germany, hit a ditch coming down a hill and flipped through a wall into the second floor of a storage depot, resulting in only minor injuries (June). Also, a woman driving 100 mph on a freeway near Leicester, England, lost control of her car, which somehow wound up in a tree about 20 feet above the roadway. She and a passenger climbed down and walked away (May). And a car speeding over a ramp sailed off a road in Durban, South Africa, crashing back-end-first through the roof of a onestory home, resting with the front end pointing straight up. Neither driver nor resident was hurt (July).
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Gary Elliott, 19, was arrested shortly after someone had ripped a hole in the ceiling of Al’s Army Navy store in Orlando, Florida, and–expertly shimmying down a rope, then back up–made off with about 70 guns in a bag. (“It must be Spider-Man,” was proprietor Neal Crasnow’s first thought.) But minutes after the burglary, Elliott came to a police officer’s attention on the street, bleeding, carrying the large bag–and pedaling away on his “getaway” vehicle, a tricycle.■

Hawaii will soon raise the legal smoking age
T
he 21st birthday milestone will soon evolve for Hawaii residents. It will not only mark the day they’re legally allowed to purchase alcoholic beverages, but tobacco products as well. On June 19, Gov. David Ige signed Act 122, making Hawaii the first state to prohibit the sale, purchase, possession and consumption of cigarettes, other tobacco products and electronic smoking devices to anyone under 21. The law will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2016, according to a press release from the governor’s office. “Raising the minimum age as part of our comprehensive tobacco control efforts will help reduce tobacco use among our youth and increase the likelihood that our keiki will grow up to be tobacco-free,” said Gov. Ige in the press release. According to studies done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 4.6 million students reported being current tobacco users between 2011 and 2014, and roughly half
10 JULY 16, 2015
those students reported using electronic smoking devices. That means that one in four high school students and one in 13 middle school students are current users of tobacco products. Although the prevalence of tobacco use has been declining in Hawaii since 2000, the Hawaii Tobacco Prevention and Education Program (HTPEP) says the additional laws will help bring this rate down even more. Lila Johnson, program manager for HTPEP, said she’s thrilled that the law has been passed. “It’s a very important law because we’re going to be able to protect the young people from access to tobacco,” Johnson said. “It removes anybody who is of tobacco-buying age from the high schools… because we learned that most young people get their tobacco products from a social source.” Johnson said it’s important to prevent people between ages 18 and 21 from smoking tobacco because it’s at this age where experimentation can manifest into regular habits. “This is still a developmental stage and risky behaviors are most tolerated during
adolescence,” Johnson said. “Thinking becomes less concrete and more abstract, so not having nicotine or tobacco has seemed to be a very positive strategy.” The studies conducted by the CDC have shown that nicotine exposure during adolescence can negatively impact brain development, cause addiction and lead to persistent tobacco use. Now that the law has been passed, the HTPEP will begin preparing and distributing signs to businesses that will inform the public of the law. “All merchants will have signs at the sales point indicating that they cannot sell to anybody under the age of 21,” Johnson said. “We’ve also begun speaking with the police departments because they’ll be the ones enforcing the law.” Johnson said that Hawaii is proud to be able to put this law into effect, especially due to the amount of support it has received from the public. “What was really important were all

of the young people that came out and supported it,” Johnson said. “There were a number of high school and college students who spoke to legislatures and demonstrated because they wanted the protection. Those are the people who it will impact the most, so it was really gratifying.” But not everyone is looking forward to the changes that are being made, such as 18-year-old Dominick Haney, who blew out a puff of cigarette smoke as he contemplated the new law. “21 and over for smoking cigarettes is a little outrageous because that’s pretty old to decide to smoke,” Haney said. “I started smoking when I was 10 and everybody that I know who smokes started when they were even younger.” According to data provided by the HTPEP, Haney is part of the majority because nearly nine out of 10 smokers began before the age of 18. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that 90 percent of adult smokers began in their teens, or earlier, with two-thirds of that

rolling papers. Bender pointed out how the company now prints a disclaimer on all of their products stating they’re “not for use with or sold for use with tobacco” and “only for use with legal smoking herbs.” “It seems like they’re going in two different directions here because on the marijuana side, everything is becoming legal and now they’re going against smoking tobacco,” said Ken Karinen, an employee at the Still Smokin’ in Lahaina. “It’s your choice to put in your body whatever you want. I could see not promoting it for young people but 18 is an adult. Are we going to change that?” If anything, Bender and Karinen believe that this law will lead to more problems as opposed to solving them, such as creating another black market and an even larger population of criminals because of the amount of smokers under the age of 21 who will still find a way to obtain cigarettes. Johnson said that most people are lawabiding citizens, so this shouldn’t be too big of an issue and the positive effects will certainly outweigh the negative ones. “We know that young people get their hands on alcohol under the age of 21, but it’s not a majority,” Johnson said. “Only 10 percent of high school students smoke in Hawaii, so just having less access to tobacco is going to help reduce that much further.” In response to local business owners who appear to be upset by this law, such as Bender, Johnson said her focus is on keeping people healthy. “It’s still a legal product for those over the age of 21,” Johnson said. “I really don’t wish to harm anybodies livelihood but when you’re dealing with products that are not safe, perhaps they could find something else that would be a better alternative.” Electronic smoking devices have been promoted as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarette smoking, but Johnson believes they’re just as harmful. “The product hasn’t been out that long but the device has generated tremendous interest and activity, particularly in Hawaii, which has been a major concern to us,” Johnson said. “It hasn’t been determined to be a safe alternative to smoking and many people who have attempted to use it to quit smoking haven’t totally given up traditional smoking.” According to the CDC, more than a quarter million middle and high school students had never smoked traditional cigarettes but had
[sic] down until you reach zero nicotine. We already have a tremendous amount of customers who have done that.” Uyesugi said that he’s received positive feedback from 100 percent of his customers. “They feel so much better now and their doctors are saying their health is much better,” Uyesugi said. “They’re able to taste things, they’re able to smell things and they’re happier because they don’t have to hide smoking from their family and friends.” He said his business typically caters to the older crowd, with only about 20 percent of customers falling between 18 and 21. Although he does see the new law affecting his sales, he doesn’t think it will be completely devastating. This is partially because Uyesugi believes underage residents will find a way to continue purchasing ecigarettes if they’re determined to do so. “I have first-hand experience that parents are buying their under 18-year-old kids vape and the whole reason behind it is that their kids are already addicted to smoking, so the parent wants them to quit smoking,” Uyesugi said. A common argument against the law, which is shared by both Bender and Uyesugi, is that an 18-year-old is an adult who can make life-altering decisions but now they can’t choose to smoke tobacco products, which seems unfair. “At the age of 18, you can go into the army and kill people, you can make a mistake that can cost you your entire life and you could go to prison or get executed,” Uyesugi said. “When they raise the legal age to 21, they’re saying you’re not smart enough to determine for yourself if you should smoke or, now, if you should vape. It doesn’t make sense.” Johnson said that it will be up to each base commander to determine how they wish to adhere to the law and most military locations will abide by the law of the land where they’re stationed. “The military itself is moving towards reducing smoking among its troops because it impacts their readiness,” Johnson said. “They’re probably going to raise the prices of tobacco products on military bases and it’ll be interesting to see how it’s played out in Hawaii with the bases and our law.” ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

group becoming regular, daily smokers before they were 19 years old. And once someone starts smoking, it’s extremely difficult to stop. The CDC found that only one in eight high school students who attempted to quit smoking were successful for at least 30 days. If those who are motivated to quit smoking can’t stop, how will this law affect those who want to continue receiving their daily dose of tobacco? “I’m just going to keep buying cigarettes and if they don’t let me buy cigarettes, then my family will just buy them for me and the police are going to start giving me tickets,” Haney said. Haney believes that raising the smoking age to 21 may prevent some people from picking up the habit, but it won’t make much of a difference. “I think it’s going to be the same as if the smoking age were still 18,” Haney said. “People are going to smoke if they want to smoke, whether there are laws or not.” Haney suggested a possible solution for current smokers who will be underage again when the law goes into effect is to enact a grandfather clause, which would exempt those who have already turned 18 and were once legally allowed to smoke tobacco. Local business owners who will be negatively affected by the law would most likely agree with Haney’s suggestion, such as Jess Bender, owner of the head shop Still Smokin’. “I personally started smoking cigarettes when I was 15 and I had no problem getting them,” Bender said. “I don’t think it’s going to accomplish anything. If you’re really determined to smoke and you’re going to be underage again, you’re going to find your cigarettes somehow.” Bender said he’s concerned with how the law will affect his business because about 30 to 40 percent of his clientele are between the ages of 18 and 21. He is currently speaking with his lawyers about marketing strategies they can use to continue selling glass pieces and other smoking paraphernalia to customers who are 18 or older, but knows he won’t be able to get around the law prohibiting the sale of actual tobacco to customers under 21. What’s more, Bender brought up the fact that when Obama first took office in 2009, his administration immediately made flavored cigarettes illegal. This caused many companies to rebrand their products, such as Juicy Jay, which produces and sells
used electronic smoking devices in 2013, three times higher than 2011. This data paired with the uncertainty regarding these devices (also known as e-cigarettes or vaporizers) prompted government officials to raise the smoking age to 21 for those who use these products. E-cigarettes will also be banned in all areas where traditional cigarette smoking has already been deemed illegal, which is 20 feet away from businesses and on all beaches. “Smoking was originally made that way because second-hand smoke was a big factor. People were getting sick with cancer and other illnesses, but vaping hasn’t shown to have any second-hand exposure,” said Garett Uyesugi, owner of Island E-Cig and Vape Company (which is a division of Island Hobbies). “For smoking on beaches, a lot of issues were with cigarette butts being thrown in the sand, but vaping doesn’t involve butts or anything else.” Uyesugi said he doesn’t agree with the idea that e-cigarettes should be classified as a tobacco product because the only similarity between smoking e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes is that they both use nicotine. The difference is how the nicotine is administered to the user and Uyesugi explained that burning cigarettes leads to taking in carcinogens, which is what can cause health problems. E-cigarettes derive the nicotine out of tobacco, which simply acts as caffeine and gives users an energy boost. Uyesugi said that e-cigarettes work in a similar nature to nicotine patches or gum. “Vaping started out being, and we still adhere to this, as a way of getting off smoking,” Uyesugi said. “It’s already been proven in a lot of studies from across the world that vaping and the use of e-cigarettes is far more productive towards getting people to stop smoking than patches or other pharmaceutical options.” Uyesugi said the e-juice that is put into ecigarettes is made of vegetable glycerin, polyglycol, food grade flavorings and nicotine. All of the ingredients used are approved by the Federal Drug Administration, but e-cigarettes themselves have yet to be endorsed. “The government has lost track of why vaporizers are around: to promote a healthy American,” Uyesugi said. “The whole idea is not for people to vape for the rest of their lives. They match their nicotine level, so they get their fix and then it’s easier to diminish the nicotine addiction that way and you can keep incrementing

ational Ice Cream Day has always been an important day for Glen Simkins. The team at his farm that grows the ingredients used in his Coconut Glen’s vegan ice cream celebrate every third Sunday in July with a scavenger hunt on the property. This year, Simkins–“Coconut Glen” himself– wants to share this special day and tradition with the public by holding a fun scavenger hunt in Paia that will last all week. “National Ice Cream Day was so declared by Ronald Reagan, and it is this Sunday, July 19th,” says Simkins. “July also happens to be Ice Cream Month. Last year at this time, Conde Nast declared us the second best ice cream on the planet, which is pretty cool. It’s my holiday, it’s a big deal on the farm. Now that I’m in Paia, I want to bring the magic out that way–show everybody in town what we are all about.” Simkins started making Coconut Glen’s Ice Cream and opened his Hana Ice Cream stand in 2008. Originally from Boston and trained as a chef, he moved to Maui looking for a healthier lifestyle, eventually settling in Hana. He makes his ice cream in Kahului at a commercial kitchen, but it’s only sold at his ice cream stand in Hana and his new location in Paia that opened in March. The Paia location is a 1960 Metro International, which he converted into an ice cream truck that he calls the “Bubble Bus” and parks across from the Post Office. The ice cream is an all-vegan, organic and seasonal product, made with a base of coconut milk and comes in about 13 flavors. “I feel I have the persona of having a Willy Wonka type character,” says Simkins. “So the scavenger hunt is turning a fantasy into a reality. I’m writing a book based around a world where ice cream grows on trees, which is exactly the case when you make ice cream out of coconuts, fruit and sugar cane. We do live in that world of Willy Wonka and that wonderful imaginary place where you can eat
everything. This is a bit of my company’s primal cry of the eternal child and bringing fun to the situation, and really passive marketing for our neighbors. We are new to Paia and this is kind of our meet-and-greet.” First Clue to Sunday’s scavenger hunt: To the left of the moon, “Two days too slow.”* Lewis can lead you, If your willing to go. *Quote from Alice in Wonderland by the Mad Hatter... Second Clue to Sunday’s scavenger hunt: What’s black and white, With pale blue eyes? Surprisingly gentle, Despite it’s great size? Each of these clues will lead you to a business in Paia. Go there and collect a token. Then tune into Coconut Glen’s Facebook page for updates on the next clues. On Saturday, July 25, Glen will hand out the Grand Prizes at the Bubble Bus in Paia. “One of the greatest joys is having people that are lactose intolerant that come and eat two or three ice creams in a row,” says Simkins. “They are like children because they haven’t been able to eat dairy in so long. And really you cannot taste the difference. You cannot taste the fact that anything is missing. In fact, I think it tastes much better than dairy ice cream. Try Coconut Glen’s ice cream at Mile Marker 27.5 on the Hana Highway. It’s open seven days a week from 10:30am-5:30pm. Or go to the Bubble Bus at 109 Baldwin Ave., Paia. The bus is open everyday from noon to 7pm. For more info, go to Facebook.com/ CoconutGlens or Coconutglens.com. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Latin Culinary Journey WHAT’S NEW AT JOE’S NUEVO LATINO IN WAILEA
J
We Like You Too!
BEST OF MAUI WINNER FOR BEST BURGER FOR THE PAST
11 YEARS IN A ROW!
oe’s Nuevo Latino, Wailea’s newest hot spot, has some exciting news to go along with their spectacular Latin cuisine. The reincarnation of Joe’s Bar and Grill has a completely new look, bar and menu, just to catch you up. Chef Gary Johnson is at the helm for this thrilling new Latin culinary journey that awaits you. And the bar has the longest list of Spanish drinks this gringa has seen. I think what’s most rousing is the unchartered foodie territory that Latin cuisine offers. Raise your hand if you’ve seen enough Mai Tais and Macadamia nut-crusted mahi. But in this corner of Wailea, the exotic world of Central, South American and Spanish foods have been conquered, reinterpreted and served on share plates. I asked Chef Johnson what he likes to make most on the menu. I know it was a loaded question, but Johnson replied with a twinkle in his eye: “The ceviche wins.” Without a doubt, the refreshing cold raw dish of fish and seafood with citrus is a summer winner. They have three: ahi tuna, coconut marinated and Peruvian-style seafood ceviches. The menu has other treasures as well, dishes that employ plantain, cotija, poblano, chayote, masa, jicama, chimichurri, huancaina and Oaxaca. They may sound rough rolling off the tongue but in my mouth they’re riveting. The menu takes you through small plates or large, family-style entrees. There are plenty of veggie options on the small plates–asparagus, mushroom, pineapple salad, cucumber and tomatoes. The quail and the shrimp on corn cakes or chicken tamale are all divine. But resist the impulse to compare them to your favorite Mexican foods. If you step out of your familiar comfort zones, you’ll be impressed at how far you can go. As if opening a new restaurant wasn’t enough, Joe’s Nuevo Latino just launched their new Happy Hour menu and cocktail list. You can get this special menu of items 4-6pm daily and at their Industry Happy Hour from 9pm to close. The carnitas bowl is hearty, with black beans, pickled red onion and tender rice for $9. The chips and salsa is an unusual combo of plantain and tortilla with their roasted Haiku tomato salsa. The skewered lengua with corn sofrito is my go-to plate, with the skewered octopus a close second. Then there’s the wonderful fried paella… Happy Hour

Chef Gary Johnson menu ranges from $6 to $11 for plates, and the signature cocktails are $9 with wines $8 and cervezas $3. Joe’s is also launching new daily specials: Mojito Monday–$5 mojitos all night; Tamale Tuesday–$6 tamales all night; Wine Down Wednesday–half off all bottled wines; Thursday’s Club Tequila–half off special tequilas; Foodie Friday–three-course, two-drink tasting $39; Ceviche Saturday–half off ceviche; Sangria Sunday–$7 Sangria all night. Club Tequila offers a chance to join the club–a list will be kept by the bar, a passport to all the tequila, if you will. Once you’ve tasted all of them, you get a t shirt and your name on a plaque. Consider it your credential as a tequila ambassador. Club membership also gets you VIP for events and Cock Fights. Cock Fights? Yes, the bar is hosting their first ever Cock Fights on July 27 at 9pm. There, bartenders will go toe-totoe to create the best cocktail, judged by a panel of professionals. Remember, this restaurant is owned and operated by the guys who brought us the Knife Fights at Cow Pig Bun. Other great events are in the works like Happy Hour Flamenco music on Friday and Saturday nights starting in August. Joe’s still offers their 20 percent kama‘aina discount, and while you can’t get it on the other daily items on special, you can get it on any other food you order. Provecho!

’ve rarely had the chance to admire the grandeur of the Frank Lloyd Wrightdesigned King Kamehameha Golf Club in Waikapu since it opened in 1993. But now that Uncle Willie K and the Warehouse Blues Band will be doing a show there every Thursday, I have gotten another chance to see this beautiful part of Maui architectural history. It’s pretty amazing that in 1988, the original owners of the property–Howard Hamamoto, Pundy Yokouchi and Takeshi Sekiguchi– travelled to Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona. There, at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation headquarters, they reviewed plans for a new golf clubhouse. Wright had passed away almost 30 years prior, but the plans they chose (originally called “Crownfield”) were created for a couple’s home in Fort Worth Texas in 1949 that had never been built. When Marilyn Monroe and her thenhusband Arthur Miller approached Wright about a home in 1957, he pulled out the plans, customized them for land in Connecticut, and renamed it the “Marilyn Monroe Home.” But Monroe and Miller separated a year later and the home was never built. For Hamamoto, Yokouchi and Sekiguchi, the Marilyn Monroe House was for them. The home had to be modified to fit its use as a golf clubhouse, and the structure grew from a 7,000 square foot plan to the 74,000 square-foot, tri-level building. Since the plans came from the foundation and all customizations and modifications go through the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, it's officially certified by the foundation. The distinct domed building is also filled with gorgeous art pieces, rooms with round windows and leaded glass skylights that Wright called “light screens.” The original architecture features bedrooms with cylindrical vaulted ceilings and a central circular living room with a skylight. In the clubhouse version, the central circular room is the elegant Waikapu Ballroom, with 180 degrees of windows. There you can see the slopes of Mauna Kahalawai and Hale-
akala and everything in between. “The stage is built into the room, actually part of the living room configuration in the original plan,” says Pete Sebastian, Event & Catering Coordinator at the King Kamehameha Golf Club. “Basically the plans are 10 times larger than the original scale. The stage was a little alcove to the living room and fireplace. We have had to be true to the plans per the Frank Lloyd Wright estate. Every day I have walk-in visitors that are just admirers of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture.” When the plans started to come together for the opportunity to have a dinner show in this historic location, Willie K told organizers that it was important to keep this historic building preserved. “The King Kamehameha Golf Club has probably the only breathtaking spot on Maui that I know of that would be comparable to Villa Montalvo in Los Gatos, the Dodge Theater in Arizona and the Hollywood Bowl,” said Willie K in a press release from the club. “I have my own personal reverence for the Marilyn Monroe House but then I’m reminded again what a special place this is,” says Sebastian. “I have been living here since the mid ‘90s and I’ve gone and seen Willie K so many times and I appreciated him as a talent then. One of the things that he said is that he wants to set up a few key places in Hawaii to perform. When it comes to home on Maui, he would love to create this amazing show here at King Kamehameha Golf Club.” The King Kamehameha Golf Club is inviting you to their show every Thursday with Uncle Willie K and the Warehouse Band, with the debut on July 23. This show will feature a seafood and prime rib buffet for the dinner and a show ticket for $60, or show-only options at $25. What Drinks Are Made Of BOMBAY SAPPHIRE SEARCHES FOR MAUI’S MOST IMAGINATIVE BARTENDER
Winner Aaron Acala-Mosley, Cow Pig Bun
I
’m gingerly unfolding crinkled notes about gin drinks, pouring through hand-written thoughts. What makes the most imaginative bartender these days? Bombay Sapphire’s annual competition, the global search for the most imaginative bartender, wants to inspire the creativity that great drinks are made of. For eight bartenders last week, that meant a select group of judges showing up at your bar and testing your artistic Bombay Sapphire cocktail, sipping and scoring to determine who gets to compete in this weekend’s competition in Honolulu. My gig as a judge left me privy to some of the most creative gin endeavors on the island. At Four Seasons Wailea, for instance, Chris Nevins’s “On Cue” imbued fresh rosemary into local grapefruit, then added an elegant touch of jasmine liqueur for a crisp summer cocktail. Or Lexi Carlson from Flatbread in Paia, who created the “Honey Girl,” which sounds sweet but it had a kick lent to the drink from local chili pepper. Carlson wove chili skins and lemon peel into a rose garnish perched on a chilled martini glass rimmed with sugar, salt and honey infused with chili pepper. Later that day, Matt Wilburn demonstrated his La Culona, a strawberry basil Bombay Sapphire drink topped with Cock & Bull, poured at the Kahului Ale House. Some cocktails had a bounty of Maui fruits like Tom Reyes’ (Fleetwood’s, Lahaina) Hayden Mango foam topped cocktail with local lychee, Meyer lemon and grapefruit. The drink, called the “Summer Sour,” is served in a tall Collins glass with a few dashes of Peychaud bitters. Cane and Canoe’s Mitch Cortus gave us an in-
novative Bombay Sapphire and rose of pinot noir, called the “Rose Garden.” And his colleague Matthew Corbin offered a Star of India champagne inspired drink– the “Cabochon.” Corbin chilled and charged watermelon and Tahitian lime juice bonded with agar and strained them to form a clear liquid, then poured them like a rose champagne. “Imagination has long been at the heart of the Bombay Sapphire story, from artisan distillation, the careful selection of the 10 exotic botanical, to the inspired blue bottle,” states Bombay’s website. And what botanicals: this gin touts Tuscany juniper berries, grains of paradise, lemon peel, orris root, almond, angelica, coriander, cubeb, cassia and liquorice. Aaron Alcala-Mosley from Cow Pig Bun in Kihei took several of those and created a spiced Lassi, a summer yogurt drink traditionally made in India. From this he created his Stamos Fizz, a take on the Ramos Gin Fizz. It’s a frothy spritzed cocktail that employed aggressive shaking and special tonic water. It was this precision drink, garnished with a whole star anise pod, that won Alcala-Mosley the spot to compete in Honolulu. He will compete this Sunday at 3pm at the Republik in Honolulu, against six other bartenders from around Hawaii. Sunday’s winner will then head to the National Bombay Sapphire Most Imaginative Bartender competition in Las Vegas in August. Follow the action at Mostimaginativebartender.com. ■

High Concept, Weak Screenplay ‘Self/Less’ starts strong with big ideas, then goes nowhere ★★★★★ Rated PG13 / 116 Min.
B
en Kingsley stars as Damian, a wealthy businessman, on top of the world but emotionally distant from his only daughter and everyone else. Early on, we see him at one of those public meetings in a restaurant, where a younger, less experienced executive is about to get fired. While Damian remains smug in his seat, the disgraced executive storms off, his parting words a reminder that the old man won’t be around much longer. Damian gravely turns to his longtime colleague and adds, “He’s right.” Damian has cancer, though death isn’t his only option. A slick businessman (well played by Matthew Goode) introduces Damian to the “Shedd,” a process where an old mind can be placed into a young body that was developed in a laboratory. Damian undergoes the procedure and awakens a young man, now played by Ryan Reynolds. While the 50-years younger Damian enjoys his active and unpredictable young existence, he begins to hallucinate and uncovers a major conspiracy involving the scientists who gave him his second life. Self/Less begins well, with the intrigue
of the premise and energetic filmmaking casting a spell pulling us in. But just when it should take off, it sputters. At first, I couldn’t detect any trace of director Tarsem Singh’s previous work. Then the hallucinations came and I recognized the look and style (in brief spurts) of the genius who made The Fall, one of the best films of 2008. Unfortunately, while there are odd similarities between the two films (the importance of what is “real” and a father/daughter surrogate relationship), Self/Less has a screenplay that feels like a first draft and not enough excitement to distinguish it. There are scenes so beautifully lit and expertly set up, you wish the movie gave you more instead of settling for less. It’s nice to see a summer movie catered to adults, aiming for a Rod Serling-esque tale with moral implications atop the sci-fi premise. But by the end, the film addresses none of its big questions or any provocative themes on human responsibility. What’s more, the pacing is all over the place, as some scenes crackle (like a montage, set to New Orleans street musicians, in which Reynolds embraces his new life), while others drag and stall the momentum. Kingsley is second-billed but is only in
Green Island Gardening 15 years in business
the first act, then exits the film entirely. It’s too bad, as he creates a sympathetic character and the movie could have used more of him. Goode does a nice character turn but he can’t fill the void of Kingsley being gone for 80 percent of the movie. Reynolds is miscast and doesn’t fully immerse himself. While a handsome, likable leading man, he’s too much a live wire to be playing such a glum character. He makes no effort to impersonate Ben Kingsley’s vocals or performance (which shouldn’t have been too hard, since Kingsley is playing an American). Despite Kingsley’s character being middle-aged, there’s nothing “old school” or charmingly dated about any of Reynolds’ actions or choice of words. Having two actors play the same
role doesn’t come off very well. Natalie Martinez is always a pleasure to watch and she invests real feeling into her scenes, but her role is too much of a plot device. Playing Martinez’s daughter is eightyear-old actress Jaynee-Lynn Kinchen. Her scenes with Reynolds, where he teaches her to swim, are adorable. The scenes where bad guys are firing guns around her, on the other hand, are contemptible. This isn’t the comeback vehicle Reynolds badly needs, though it’s not a Green Lantern or The Change-up, either. Actually, Self/Less is like another R.I.P.D., in which Reynolds again seems only halfcommitted to a high concept fantasy with a strong co-star and good director, but done in by a weak screenplay. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
You’re like the opposite of the princess with the pea. She couldn’t rest because of one tiny irregularity buried beneath her mountain of mattresses. You, on the other hand, have been sleeping like a baby, despite the whole skeleton tucked under your paperthin futon. Maybe you didn’t put it there. Perhaps you’ve gotten used to it. You might even, perversely, like having it around. But the thing deserves a proper burial, regardless of your comfort. And that, of course, means pulling it out of hiding and letting everyone involved decide what to do with it. Don’t worry; it’s not going to be as bad as you think, and, believe it or not–you will sleep much better afterwards.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Can you tell the difference between stark raving mad and batshit insane? How about between puritanical prudishness and catholic conservatism? Since all your choices this week are between undesirable and undetectably different shades of gray, I hereby give you permission to abstain from them. None of them are especially important, although the brimstone and bluster surrounding them might indicate otherwise. They’re idiots. Don’t bother enlightening them; they can’t hear that shit. The only thing they’d actually understand is that you’d entered the fray, which is the last thing you want to waste your time doing.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
It’s rare when you and your fiery cousins, those hotheaded Aries, clash. That’s why you both might be totally shocked by, and unequipped to deal with, this week’s difference of opinions. Neither of you is especially conservative, but nevertheless the roots of your caution may hold you back, for different reasons (as they’re sunk deep into different soil). If you want to amiably end this, don’t try cutting the Rams free from the ideas that are holding them back; they’ll only give ground when you do. Instead, saw yourself free with every ounce of logic and passion you possess.
You don’t startle easily, or else you hide it well. That’s good, because this week is full of little surprises, and you’d lose major face if you jumped and shrieked like a little girl at every one. Not all of them are bad, luckily–of course that means that not all of them are good, either. But I hope you’re willing to take the good with the bad, and vice versa, without undue focus on one or the other. The worst thing you could do is draw conclusions about “the way your life is” from this week’s events. You’re not inherently unlucky or lucky, and the universe isn’t trying to set you up for a shockinduced heart attack. This week, no matter what it seems, isn’t the rule, only a compelling exception.
WED & FRI 7:30AM
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Last night I dreamt I lived in a culture where dreams were revered and valued, not for some inherent symbolic meaning, but simply for the experiences they gave you, and what you could learn about yourself based on your own actions and reactions within them. Thus when I woke from that dream, I was eager to dive right back into another. Our culture, of course, is more likely to celebrate real life pursuit of your dreams, which is just what you’re good at, with your boundless energy and determination. Thus if you find yourself bounced out of one of those, please don’t hesitate before diving into another.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Pisceans appeal to me because you’re the sign I have the hardest time wrapping my head around. It’s nearly impossible for me to guess what you’ll do in a given situation, or even how you’ll react. I like being around you because I’m not afraid of the unknown. Some of the other people in your life, however, are more fearful of things they simply can’t understand. It’s not your job, of course, to make yourself into a predictable clone, just so they can feel safe. But it could be your job to help them feel safe when surrounded by chaos. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
What you’re suffering from is a touch of acute spiritual hypochondria. You’re imagining ills that simply aren’t there, or projecting onto minor occurrences far more serious consequences than are strictly merited. I hope you can trust me enough to be relieved by that; your mountains are indeed molehills, at least this time. Treat them accordingly, even if that conflicts with the emotions they elicit. Those intense and out-of-proportion feelings are only temporary; your cool head will prevail soon. Believe me, the alternative–whatever crazy-ass drama arises from those molehills–won’t go away nearly so easily. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Puke and get it over with. You’ll feel better, most likely, and it’s certainly better than allowing the dread and nausea to build. Same goes for the band-aid you’re reluctant to just yank off, or the cold swimming pool you’re hesitant to plunge right into. In other words, don’t drag out the torture; by doing so, you’re only amplifying it. The discomfort (or even pain) you’re doomed to suffer isn’t actually so bad; at least it’s quick, and easily forgotten, and by postponing it, you just feed it and make it worse, as well as delaying the sweeter times that await. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Even my seemingly indefatigable Labrador will balk at swimming out to fetch his ball after the 150th throw. I think even he’s surprised to discover that there’s a limit. You, too, have limits, even for things you love and want more than anything in the world. You may come up against some of those this week, and instead of being disappointed, I hope you can find some way to feel, I don’t know–relieved? Serene? Satisfied? The list of potential reactions to this revelation goes on and on, and only a couple of items on it are “negative.” For you to focus solely (or even mainly) on those would be a shame.
You can be pretty scary. But despite that, you often wish for a more formidable (secret) arsenal: switchblades stashed in your boots, nunchuks up your sleeves, and poison concealed beneath a tricky filling in your molar. You don’t need this kind of deadly might, because if you had it, you’d be tempted to use it–and 99 times out of a hundred, you’d wish you hadn’t, afterwards. Stick to the painful pressure of your claw-like grip, the sharp lash of your tongue, and good old kicks in the ass to get your way–the consequences for these are a lot easier to fix and get over.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
It’s hard to move when you’ve got the world on your shoulders. You might find yourself feeling embarrassingly limited and completely unable to budge an inch forward, even when your teammates are shouting encouragement from the sidelines and every ounce of your being wants to take that next step. It’s humbling, isn’t it, to come up so hard against your own limits? Don’t feel too bad; no one could move while carrying what you’re trying to carry. Too much of that weight isn’t your responsibility. Let go of at least some, and preferably most, of it, Taurus. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
The idea of you rejecting freedom in favor of what could be called limitation, commitment, and responsibility seems as unlikely as snow in July. In the southern hemisphere, however, July is the dead of winter, and frosty precipitation isn’t so unheard of. Get ready; your world’s about to get turned on its head. Your ideas about freedom and what it really means are outdated; their revision is long overdue. Forget your teenage concept of autonomy; what you need now is different. Don’t give up your quest for ever-expanding horizons. Just keep it fresh and updated; that means not pursuing, out of habit, sour dreams that are long past their sell-by dates.
