MPD got a lot of use out of these
For those of us in the business of chronicling conflict in Maui County, we live in good times. For the first time since, well, that long crisis known as the Hawaii Superferry, residents and activists are regularly going into the streets to voice their displeasure at the status quo. And now they’re getting arrested doing it. In the very early morning hours of July 31, Maui Police arrested 20 individuals attempting to block trucks at the Maui Baseyard from carrying equipment to the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) atop Haleakala. Activists had halted a similar construction from the same site a few weeks ago with no arrests. But this time was different. “At least 30 Maui County Police officers also showed up at the site to assist in getting the trucks out of the gate,” Hawaii News Now reported a few hours after the arrests. “But when the trucks started their engines, several protesters lay down in the driveway, with their arms linked together with PVC pipes. It took officers several hours to cut through the pipes with saws. Once the pipes were cut, the protesters were arrested and taken away.” I had known activists would be gathering at the Baseyard, just as they had previously, because they’re quite adept at sending news releases to the media. But I also knew that, this time, it was likely that not all of them would be heading straight home after the protests. Earlier, on the afternoon of July 30, the MPD’s public information office had sent out their own news release, but it was very brief and foreshadowed a world of hurt. Titled “Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope Project,” it contained just two sentences: “Maui Police Department respects the rights for people to demonstrate peacefully,” it stated. “We will respond in an appropriate manner.” You’ve got to admire people who know their actions will likely lead to their arrest, and yet do it anyway. While I find it appalling that the nearly completed construction telescope–A telescope!
An instrument of scientific research for the betterment of all humanity!–has become a symbol of imperialism, I can’t help but respect the activists’ courage. Later on July 31, the MPD sent out a new press release. This one included the booking photos of 18 of the 20 activists they arrested. They range in age from 19 to 60. All but one lives on Maui (the other gave a Honolulu address). All were charged with the usual list of Great Offenses Against The State: resisting arrest, failure to disperse, disorderly conduct and refusal of right of way. Bail for each was set at $600. “Officers made every attempt to have the demonstrators cooperate and clear the way for the tractor trailers to gain access onto the roadway, however, they were met with opposition,” the MPD stated. “Demonstrators laid on the ground and connected themselves with PVC pipes and chains. Officers were able to extract each individual who were then taken into custody. As a result, thirteen (13) adult males and seven (7) adult females were arrested.” One of those arrested, Kaleikoa Ka‘eo, a Hawaiian Studies Professor at University of Hawai‘i Maui College, gave a defiant statement after his arrest (though the MPD booked him under the name “Samuel Kaeo”). “Fundamentally, we are asserting our human rights,” said Ka‘eo in an Aug. 2 news release from the activists.

from driving into Haleakala National Park to watch the sunrise, or stop the Hyatt from building a giant timeshare in Ka‘anapali. No, the fight on Haleakala is over the DKIST telescope, pure and simple. And unlike the TPP talks, which are now history, it’s a fight that will be with us for some time to come.

MAUI PROTESTS HEAT UP
“Actions taken Thursday night were in direct response to the National Solar Observatories [sic] desire to further desecrate and unlawfully control our sacred mountaintop. As such, we had no choice but to resist and demonstrate our demands for our humanity to be recognized and for equal protection of human rights. All people, all ages, all walks of life, participated in this action of resistance through love for the land, love for the people and love for the truth. Aloha ‘Aina. ‘Oiai‘o. Kapu Aloha. This is just the beginning of things to come. The fact that MPD organized a huge police presence exposes the fact that they are fearful and threatened by an organized, educated Hawaiian movement.” Most interestingly, activist Trinette Furtado–who was not among those arrested–denied that her comrades were “anti-science.” “We are not anti-telescope, we are not anti-science,” she said in the same Aug. 2 news release cited above. “We are for the mountain, we are for preserving our culture. We stand for the conservation, desecration, archaeological and Hawaiian access laws which protect Haleakala.” I noticed a similar defensiveness with the activists who protested the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) talks in Ka‘anapali last week. There, after hundreds gathered to criticize the secret free trade negotiations (there were no arrests),” organizer Andrea Brower insisted that the movement wasn’t about halting trade between nations. “We aren’t opposed to trade, and we aren’t opposed to international cooperation,” Brower said in a July 29 news release she sent out herself. “What we are opposed to is economic imperialism—the writing of the rules of the global economy in order to serve solely the most dominant financial interests, always at the expense of the poorest.” Please. Of course the protesters against the DKIST are “anti-telescope,” just as the hundreds who protested the TPP talks are against the trade deal. I don’t recall reading about activists chaining themselves together to prevent tourists

KEITH REGAN TO HOLD BIG CAMPAIGN FUNDRAISER We have more than a year to go before the 2016 elections get here, but County of Maui Managing Director Keith Regan isn’t wasting any time. Regan, who’s running for the Maui County Council seat currently held by Mike Victorino (who’s prevented from running again in 2016 because of term limits), recently filed papers announcing a big fundraiser next week. According to a notice filed with the State of Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission, on Saturday, Aug. 8, Regan will hold a $150/person fundraiser at a private residence in Kula. According to a 2015 personal disclosure form filed with the County of Maui, that residence belongs to County of Maui Corporation Counsel Patrick Wong, one of the most powerful public officials in the county (he’s also quite the gambler, as we illustrated in our June 18, 2015 cover story). So far, only Joe Blackburn has announced that he also wants Victorino’s seat (Blackburn’s also unsuccessfully challenged Victorino in two prior elections). Of course, Blackburn is now running in an open seat, but it’s never a good sign that your biggest opponent starts lining up major county establishment players for fundraisers more than a year out from the polls. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

world forensics.” This also wasn’t just some grueling science lab for the kids. “The students really got into it,” said WIT STEMworks Director Isla Young in a Maui Economic Development Board news release sent out on July 29. One participant loved the event so much that she is now considering forensics as a career choice. “I love to help people around the world and CSI gives me the opportunity to do just that,” Kami Echiverri said. “I hope more girls can be as passionate about STEM.”

4-H isn’t just about showcasing beautiful rabbit specimens at the Maui County fair. On July 29, 2015, the organization’s annual event 4-H Tech Connect staged a mock kidnapping crime scene as part of its theme “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” Sixty-five kids were given the tools of science to track the perpetrator, and by “tools” we don’t mean the flashlights on their iPhones. With the Maui Economic Development Board’s Women in Technology (WIT) sponsoring the event and the Maui County 4-H Youth Development Program and Maui Police Department’s Forensic Team joining as partners, this year’s 4-H Tech Connect was able to guide participants from elementary students to high schoolers in conducting realistic forensic research. Much assistance came from MPD’s Police Evidence Specialist Anthony “Tony” Earles. He taught them basic forensic science concepts and how to go about collecting evidence. After the batch witnessed the victim getting snatched away, the young detectives went forth analyzing fingerprints, hairs, fibers and L to R: Kacee Arase, Cassidy Matsuda, Kristi Echiverri footprints utilizing “real

SAVE THE CUTE DOG MURAL! Who knew innocent images of dogs and sunflowers might have ulterior motives? Paintings of such are now being treated as illegal advertising for a residence in Kula. Officials with the County of Maui have asked homeowner Lisa Giesick to cover up the mural which runs along her fence, saying that the artwork is just a “sign” for her home business Ohana Pet Training. Two days ago, Giesick launched a petition on Change.org to save her mural, which has already attracted over a thousand signatures. “The artwork was done by artist Alex Kizu,” Giesick writes in her petition, denying the art having commercial intentions. “The mural portrays my personal dogs, his dog, and two dogs belonging to friends.” Originally, there wasn’t a problem. According to Giesick, an official with the county’s zoning office questioned Giesick about her fence and career around mid-

Off-price retailer T.J.Maxx opens its new store at the Maui Mall in Kahului on Thursday, Aug. 6. The newest of more than 1,000 stores–one of the nation’s largest off-price retailers—Maui’s T.J.Maxx will offer a range of items including fashion, accessories, jewelry, home décor, pet products, toys and more. T.J.Maxx, which opened its first store in 1977, offers the same on-trend, in season, first quality merchandise as department and specialty stores, but for 20 to 60 percent less. “We are pleased to expand our store base to Maui, delivering value and an exciting selection of merchandise to serve the needs of customers,” said Richard Sherr, the company president. “With thousands of new items from top designers and brands arriving in stores weekly from around the world, shoppers will discover a new store full of amazing values every time they visit.” Plans at presstime were to celebrate T.J.Maxx’s grand opening with a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony beginning at 7:30am, followed by a check presentation to Women Helping Women, a local nonprofit that provides emergency shelter and programs for victims of domestic violence. The store will be open to shoppers from 8am until 10pm on opening day. T.J.Maxx’s regular hours will be from 9:30am to 9:30pm, Monday-Saturday and from 11am to 8pm on Sundays. For those who have never shopped
at a T.J.Maxx, the retailer carries brandname merchandise from top designers at discounted prices. T.J.Maxx buys its inventory globally, however the Maui store will feature local Hawaiian merchandise, including specialty food items, coffee, jewelry and bath and body products, as well as items from local fashion designers and aloha wear in its local store. In celebration of its new Maui location, T.J.Maxx will give back to the community by donating $5,000 to Women Helping Women as part of the grand opening. The new store also brings approximately 60 full and part-time job opportunities to the area.
The sudden demand perplexed Giesick; she said that the mural was the work of an artist and friend, who shared her simple wish to commemorate their dogs. Giesick also said that it was her understanding the whole conundrum was “originally” the result of a single complaint. A county spokesperson confirmed that. “We got a complaint from a neighborhood resident that this was a commercial billboard,” said Rod Antone, the county Communications Director. Antone added that no fines were involved, and only a warning was issued. He also said the Planning Department is currently reviewing the case. The county code section which assesses appropriate home business sign usage is pretty vague. Section 19.67.030 of General Standards and Restrictions, paragraph F, states the following: “Except for one ground sign or wall sign, as defined in section 16.13.030 of this code, not to exceed two square feet, there shall be no visible evidence of the home business, including, but not limited to, alterations to the exterior of the residence that change the character of the residence or neighborhood, exterior displays, or the outdoor storage of materials or equipment used by the home business. Ground signs shall not be permitted within fifteen feet of the front or side property line. Wall signs may be affixed to a fence at the entrance of the property on lots of two acres or more.” The pictures of canines could be regarded as “visible evidence of the home business” since Giesick’s business is training animals, but the dogs in the mural are a part of her personal life and are not

June. Giesick says the county official at first found no issue with the mural since it was bereft of text. But apparently–again, according to Giesick–other officials overruled that finding and sent an email to Giesick on Monday, July 27, telling her that she must remove the mural. “Our administrator has decided because you run your business out of your home that the painting on your fence is a sign,” states the email. “It will have to be altered or painted over.”
related to her work. As for now, Giesick’s petition needs 357 more names to reach its goal of 1,500 signatures. For more information, go to Change.org/p/the-county-of-maui-allowme-to-keep-my-mural. - Jade Boren ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

THE 90-MINUTE DAY The whimsical premise of the iconic movie Groundhog Day (that someone can wake up every day believing it is the previous day) has largely come to life for a patient of a British psychologist writing recently in the journal Neurocase. Dr. Gerald Burgess’ patient, following anesthesia and root-canal treatment, was left with a memory span of only about 90 minutes and awakens each day believing it is the day he is to report for the same root canal. He has been examined by numerous specialists, including neurologists who found no ostensible damage to the usual brain areas associated with amnesia. The patient is able to manage his day only by using an electronic diary with prompts.
CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Apparently, “uncooperative” child dental patients (even toddlers) can be totally restrained on a straitjacket-like “papoose board” without parental hand-holding, even during toothpulling, as long as the parent has signed a “consent form” (that does specifically mention the frightening practice). A recent case arose in Carrollton, Georgia, but a Georgia Board of Dentistry spokesperson told Atlanta’s WSBTV that such restraints are permitted (though should have been accompanied by an explicit warning of potential physical or psychological harm). The father of the “screaming” girl said he was initially barred from the exam room and was led to believe, when he signed the consent form, that he was merely authorizing anesthesia.
WAIT, WHAT? Among the new rules proposed by California’s Occupational Safety and Health Standards agency in May was one to require actors in pornographic movies (whose male actors OSHS has already ordered to wear condoms) to wear goggles–lest bodily fluids splash into their eyes during scenes. Further, all equipment and surfaces of sets must be decontaminated after each scene and at day’s end.
COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS In April, the U.S. Office of Special Counsel ordered the Federal Bureau of Prisons to stop relocating whistleblowing employees to “offices” that were abandoned jail cells. The bureau had insisted that the transfers were not punishment for reporting agency misconduct–even though one of the “offices” had no desk, computer or phone and required the employee to walk past prisoners’ cells to get to work.
THE CONTINUING CRISIS In February, the Office of Residential Life at Wesleyan University (Middletown, Connecticut), intending to tout its dedication to inclusiveness and the creation of a “safe space” for minority students, posted a notice on its website inviting applications from the “LBTTQQFAGPBDSM” communities. The probable translation: the

COSBYING 2.0 A court in Castrop-Rauxel, Germany, fined a 23-year-old man in July after he admitted that, one evening last year, he put “four or five drops” of a sedative into his girlfriend’s tea without her knowledge–so that she would doze off for the evening and not bother him while he played video games. She had come home after a hard day at work, expecting peace and quiet, but began complaining about the boyfriend’s machine-gun-fire game.
NORWAY’S FINEST The Washington Post’s running tally counts more than 400 people shot to death in the United States by law enforcement already this year with five months to go, but 2014 figures from Norway reveal that officers there shot at people only twice all year. Proportionally (64 times as many people live in the U.S.), American police would still have fired only 128 rounds last year if they showed Norway’s restraint. (Bonus fact: Norway’s cops missed their targets both times.)
PERSPECTIVE Pharmaceutical companies justify huge drug price markups on the ground that the research to develop the drug was, itself, hugely expensive. In February, a Canadian company, Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, decided to raise the price of two heart-saving drugs (Nitropress, Isuprel) by 212 percent and 525 percent, respectively, even though it had conducted no research on the drugs. That was because, reported The Wall Street Journal, all Valeant did was buy the rights to the already-approved drugs from another company (which, of course, had thought the drugs–research and all–had been fairly priced at the lower amounts). Said a Valeant spokesperson, “Our duty is to our shareholders and to maximize the value” of our products (even, apparently, if it owned the product for less than a day before jacking up the price as much as five-fold).
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Scott Birk, 31, was arrested in New Berlin, Wisconsin, in July, thanks to a big boost the police got from his 6-year-old daughter.A Wal-mart security guard noticed, on video, someone breaking into a jewelry case and pocketing earrings, and approached Birk as a suspect, in time to overhear the girl tell her dad “several times” to stop breaking into jewelry cases. Officers running an ID check found no driver’s license and asked how he had gotten to the store, and he said they walked. But Daddy, she said, we came in our car, and she cheerfully pointed it out to police.A search turned up more items stuffed in Birk’s shorts, and he was charged with theft and violating a previous bail condition. ■

h brah: a big shout-out to the Maui angels who helped me when my truck overflowed on Lower Main in Wailuku. I made the turn at Waihee Beach Road and many food items spilled onto the road. First a young girl stopped, helped clean up some items and left me with a roll of paper towels and a clean up bag. Then a young man stopped and helped get things loaded onto the truck. Then a man and his son stopped and helped me finish. I’m really grateful and happy to see so much Aloha spread around. I’m humbled. ■

The Little Newsletter That Could ‘Environment Hawai‘i’ just turned 25,
so we talked story with founder Patricia Tummons about what it takes to report on the state’s environmental situation.
By Anthony Pignataro
W
e live in times when matters of the environment increasingly seem of preeminent importance. Especially given Hawaii’s island topography and placement in the middle of the Pacific, news concerning ocean acidification, threats to endangered species and climate change in general does indeed travel fast.
For the last 25 years, the tiny publication Environment Hawai‘i has made a big impact on what people throughout the state know and understand about the natural world. Each month, the little subscriber-based newsletter (they don’t run advertisements) has reported on often difficult and technical environment and land use stories. And it’s done so consistently with great intelligence and heart. “Our reports are based on serious legwork and beat coverage–never ever on press releases,” states the Environment Hawai‘i website. “At a time when news across the state has been homogenized and pasteurized and consolidated into easily digested pap, our reports continue to have substance, addressing difficult issues but always with a view to making them understood to motivated readers concerned about the fate of Hawai`i’s unique assemblage of flora and fauna, its precious and limited natural resources, and its still-abundant but often threatened beauty.” Though their official anniversary took place in June, the publication will be throwing a little celebration in Hilo on Aug. 14. Last week, I spoke by phone with Patricia Tummons, Environment Hawaii’s founder and editor about the newsletter’s purpose, evolution and impact.
10 AUGUST 6, 2015
MAUITIME: Congratulations on making it 25 years. If you will, let’s go back to 1990 and describe how you got started. PATRICIA TUMMONS: There were three of us–three ladies. There was myself, and I had been working with the League of Women Voters and doing freelance jobs. Then there was Marjorie Ziegler and Andria Benner. We were grousing about how daily newspapers were remiss in their coverage of the environment. I came from a newspaper background–14 years at the St. Louis Post Dispatch. So we decided to put together our own newsletter. It was subscriber-supported–no commercials. And we’d write about the environment, with a little more meat than you’d find in the dailies. MT: Were you always based in Hilo? PT: No. The first three years were were based on Oahu. But it got too pricey. MT: Who works on the publication now, besides yourself? PT: In 1997, I hired Theresa Dawson as another reporter. She’s based in Honolulu. But I pretty much did all the writing from the get-go. Andria was too busy to do much writing and Marjorie moved back to the Mainland. MT: What have been some of your standout stories? PT: Oh, in 1993 we looked at a spaceport that was proposed on the Big Island. The state named Tom Hayward, a former admiral, “space czar.” But then I found out that he had contractor status. I flew to Honolulu and looked in DBEDT [Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism] files to see his contract. He had an unusual way of submitting requests for reimbursements: he would submit a hotel
bill, and alongside each charge he would have a twoletter code–HI for Hawaii, UT for United Technologies and so forth. It was not a hard code to decipher. I also found out that sometimes he would be registered in a hotel under the name of United Technologies or Lockheed or General Dynamics. Now if he was working for Lockheed, and they’re a spaceport contractor, isn’t that a conflict? I called up his supervisor and asked him if he knew of any conflicts that Admiral Hayward would have. He poopooed the idea, outraged that I would even make such a suggestion. But I asked him if he would tell Hayward that I wanted to talk to him. Later, Hayward called me, but at an odd hour. He said how wonderful the spaceport would be. Then I asked him if he was also a contractor with Lockheed. He got quiet, then said, “Yes, but that’s a different division.” A couple months after breaking that story Hayward was out and the spaceport was never built. MT: That’s remarkable. What else? PT: In 1994, we started attending the Western Pacific Regional Management Council meetings (known as WestPac). They advise the federal government on the management of fisheries in federal waters. The first time we were there, they were discussing the catching of turtles by long lines. They weren’t setting out to catch turtles, but they were interacting with them year after year. There were take limits, but each year the fleet would exceed that number. But instead of imposing sanctions or requirements for gear that would be more turtle-friendly, they just raised the limit each year.
was near Ocean View, an unimproved subdivision. South from that is Pohue Bay, which is a pretty little cove. It’s Po also an active volcanic fault zone. v
We started writing about this in 1994. year, we watched in horror as they Year after year just ratcheted up the limit on what fishermen could take. Finally in 1999, based largely on our reports, Earthjustice sued. That led to a moratorium on the swordfish fisheries for a couple years. As a reporter, you’re limited to just putting it out there. We tried and tried and tried and finally someone picked it up and ran with it. MT: I wish I could say the turtle situation has gotten better since then. Or the fishing situation… PT: More recently, maybe 2011, we reported on the depletion of bigeye tuna stocks across the Central Pacific. They are now in a state of being over-fished, which is not good. We’ve gone to international conferences on this. They meet once a year, and either Theresa or I have gone for the last four or five years. Here in Hawaii, the fleet has been assigned a quota, but each year, they reach that goal earlier and earlier. The U.S. as a whole, including all possessions, has one quota: 3,500 metric tons. They’re probably at 90 percent of their quota now. Starting in 2011, Congress gave them an out: after meeting their quota, they can keep fishing, but it will be attributed to U.S. territories. Never mind that they’re not fishing there, or that the tuna was caught there, or even landed there.
I spent countless hours at the Bureau of cou Conveyances–it’s a pretty amazing place. You can trace Conveyance ownership in records all the way back to the Mahele. And r I discovered that th the land was highly leveraged. At the end of the day it was w mortgaged for $88 million to a bank in Norway. He set se up shell companies and even invented a sham investor in Kaneohe. He was easy to track down, and he was dumbfounded when I called him. He said du he had no clue [about the project]. Chidiac had kind of pulled a name out of a hat. I had copied out–at great personal expense–hundreds of these records. I had them spread out on the floor, thinking how the hell can I make a story out of this? But it actually won a national award from the Newsletter Publisher’s Association.
I never thought I’d dive into the intricacies of fishery management. It’s been a real education, but a lot of fun.
Earthjustice filed a lawsuit, and it’s coming up in October. It’ll be really interesting to see how this plays out.
We have such a small circulation, and it’s really nice when other publications pick up what we do.
MT: Definitely. Any other stories you’re particularly proud of?
MT: I can imagine. Have you ever done any big stories on Maui?
PT: Have you heard of Charles Chidiac?
PT: In 1994, I got a call that people were encroaching on the State Beach Reserve in Kihei. All the land fronting the beach in Kihei is part of the reserve. I flew over and we walked as far as we could. We found all kinds of problems. The story I wrote was titled, “Public Lands in Private Hands.” That really got folks in Kihei agitated. I gave a talk to a neighborhood group, and the state eventually took action.
MT: No, I haven’t. PT: He was a Lebanese Christian who studied at the University of Hawaii. He became an entrepreneur, and proposed a “Hawaiian Riviera Resort” on the Big Island. It
MT: Remarkable.

PT: I also wrote a lot about the Lahaina Waste Treatment Plant in 1992. At the time, there were concerns that effluent could be coming out of the injection wells. MT: I’m amazed it’s taken so long to prove that that’s, in fact, the case. PT: We try to be statewide in our coverage. In our August issue, we’ll focus on a similar problem on Kauai. MT: What’s your background? PT: I majored in philosophy and history in college, and I have a master’s degree in philosophy. I never thought I’d dive into the intricacies of fishery management. It’s been a real education, but a lot of fun. I wish every journalist could have this experience. Teresa Dawson, Staff Writer

He proposed a mammoth resort with an airfield and yacht harbor. They were grandiose plans, and he started T to get approvals approval from the state Land Use Commission. He got the last one on in 1991. But a group of fishermen sued– they have pretty unique ways of fishing bigeye scad and pr smaller fish. s They proceeded to try to get the wheels off this project. pr

reader.” They’re difficult issues, and we try to make them intelligible. But there’s no way an average person will understand the intricacies of fisheries management by reading newspapers. MT: You earlier mentioned that you worked for a daily in St. Louis. Why did you leave? PT: I worked at the copy desk, and then I wrote editorials. I love to write. But the work situation with colleagues and bosses wasn’t ideal. I got so stressed. MT: Why? PT: If you go back 30 years, and even still today, there was a lot of sexism. Then it was a lot harder for women to address it head-on. After I’d written an editorial [for example], I’d come in the next day and a biker calendar with women would be on my desk. It was such an affront. Also, I wasn’t getting equal pay for equal work. When I confronted my boss, he gave me a raise. So I bailed, and I’m so happy I did. MT: Why come to Hawaii? PT: In 1985, I got a fellowship at the University of Hawaii that was sponsored by the Gannett Foundation. It was a course in Asian Studies. That was my introduction to Hawaii. But I was also interested in writing about environmental issues. I made a lot of friends, and moved out four years later. MT: How has Environment Hawai‘i evolved over the years? PT: It started out as eight pages of teeny tiny type. After the first year we moved to a larger size type. Two years later we moved to 12 pages. Gradually, we added photos. Most recently, we added color. As far as content is concerned, when I started out, I would have one topic be the focus of the issue. There would be a main story, editorials and sidebars, all within a single focus. MT: Ok, that’s about all the questions I have. Oh, wait: how often do you file public records requests? PT: Oh, all the time. And both state and federal, too. I always work on a laptop and take extensive notes, so I can avoid copying charges. But back when I was working on the Hayward story, they said I could just come down and take a look. It was disclosure on request. But now, I would have to wait at least 10 days [after filing a request]. Then I’d get a bill for several hundred dollars. Then I’d have to protest… It’s really a huge step backwards. It’s infuriating. For more information, go to Environment-Hawaii.org ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

WHERE SUGAR & BUTTER MAKE THE WORLD GO ‘ROUND
Anthony & Victoria Briggs of Sweet Aloha
T
here’s no way you can have a bad day when you start it with a fresh baked cinnamon roll. That comforting scent of cinnamon, sugar and yeasty dough work better than a Zoloft to lift your Monday (or any other day’s) blues. So when Sweet Aloha Baking Company–the creators of the divine No Ka Oi Cinnamon Roll–opened a stand at the Lahaina Car Wash, I hightailed it over there. You may remember that a couple years ago they operated a little bakery spot for a hot minute at the food court in Whaler’s Village. At the time, owners Anthony and Victoria Briggs said the spot was just a temporary location after McDonald’s closed, and before Ruby’s opened (which has, itself, been replaced by Joey’s Kitchen). They’ve been churning out No Kai ‘Oi Cinnamon Rolls and other baked goods for their wholesale accounts in the meantime but missed seeing their customers. “We just like to have contact with people,” says Victoria. “We get contacted on Facebook andYelp so we wanted to be able to see people. Anthony’s friends own the car wash, and kept asking us, ‘when are you gonna get some cinnamon rolls up here?’ Another friend of ours had this cart up in Honokowai and they weren’t really doing anything with it. So we thought maybe we could get this cart and put it at the carwash and sell coffee and the rolls and see how it goes. We opened on July 6.” The Sweet Aloha Baking Company Stand sits off to the side of the car wash. They serve a selection of pastries and bars and breads, and have great coffee brewed fresh by Hawaiian Village coffee every morning, from 7am to 10am Monday through Fridays. Not bad for a couple who originally thought baking cinnamon rolls was just a holiday affair. “I had never made cinnamon rolls before, but after my second daughter Olivia was born, I wanted to start a Christmas tradition,” says Victoria. “I thought, what could I do that we could all do together as they get older. So I thought cinnamon rolls, we could make everything the night before and we could bake it in the morning and it will smell really good. I was working at the Ritz Carlton, and I went to the bakery department and asked for tips. I had never used yeast before. They sent me off with some pointers and I made them and they came out
really good. Then I kept making them for the next couple of years and giving them to friends, and they kept saying,‘you need to sell these.’” So she did, but didn’t want to keep baker’s hours. “The whole idea for the business was that I wanted to have a job where I could bake while my girls are at school,” Victoria says. “I don’t keep baker’s hours–I just decided that wasn’t going to be the way it works for me. I had no idea how to start a business, I had to call the Health Department. It was really trial and error. So now I have been up and running three and half years.” For Anthony, it was a different story. Baker’s hours are familiar for him. “I do sometimes start at 3am,” he says. “Because I will go start the dough, or prep some of the ingredients. I start my deliveries at about 5:30am and then at 7am I open the doors here.” The smell wafting from a take-out box full of their cinnamon rolls is intoxicating. On a recent Monday, they were a welcome addition to the grind. Sweet Aloha makes a variety of rolls, from pecan to peanut butter to no icing to raisin (they’re all listed on their website). I couldn’t resist the cookies and banana chocolate chip muffins, too. The decadent Aloha Bars with graham cracker crust, coconut, chocolate and mac nuts were also a favorite. Baked goods on the menu range from $2 to $4 and a cup of coffee is just $2.50. “I’m a self-taught baker,” says Victoria. “ I always say I learned at University of Google. We don’t keep gluten-free at the stand but you can pre-order them and I will bring them here. I am not a gluten-free baker per se, but I do have a gluten-free recipe that I use. I also have my gluten-free No Ka Oi Cinnamon Rolls at the Aina Gourmet Market everyday. I’m more of a full fats and sweets baker. Sugar and butter make the world go ‘round.”

ahale’s in Kihei will celebrate their new look and ownership this Saturday with an all-day-intonight Grand Re-Opening party. New owner Katie Karsten bought the bar from long-time owners George Brinner, Rick Wilson and partners and took over in January. She’s been making subtle changes ever since. “I was not in the bar business before I bought Kahale’s,” says Karsten. “I was in the dental business in Alaska. I was fortunate to have a young guy come in to the business, and we just monopolized in Anchorage. We ended up with three dental offices, buying consolidating and selling practices. Then I had gone through a lot of things in the last two years. My mother passed and I was looking for something different. I was thinking bar and beach. I was looking for a bar to buy, and this was the one I wanted. As soon as I found out it was for sale, I got a plane ticket to Maui.” Karsten has pulled out the old carpet, upgraded the restrooms and created a new dance floor and live music area. But her focus has always been to keep the locals and keep the name. She hired Melanie Kehau King as the bar manager, who knows the story of the bar from when it opened in 1994. “The original owner and founder that started the bar in 1994 was George Brinner and his best friend was Kahale Akina, and that was my mother’s brother,” says King. “I remember as kid coming in here that it was a family spot.” Karsten also added new entertainment and is hosting new themed nights. “We do a ladies’ night once month–the next one is August 21st,” says Karsten. “I did a big Super Bowl party when we opened up. I added some TVs. I want people to come here to watch sports and football. We are gonna do some bar olympics, beer pong, games and things like that. We want the 35 and older crowd. People who get off work and want to have a beer, they want to have a good time. The vendors have been a great help. Budweiser has brought in their local brew. On Saturday, for the blessing we will have $2 Bud all day.” She says she’s also added lights to the dance floor but wouldn’t call it a club environment “by
any stretch of the imagination.” Karsten added a new sound system as she plays with the weekly line up of live music seven nights a week. “I have changed the rotation a bit,” says Karsten. “We have everything from cover bands to country music. Monday nights I have John Ness; he is amazing.Tuesday nights we have country music. Wednesday it’s Natalie Nicole–she is so soulful. She has this voice that just resonates. The Crunch Pups are new to us.They played here a very long time ago, disbanded and now they’re back.Thursday nights have been a huge hit. 8 Track Players are always Saturday nights. We want to have talent that has never played here before like the Tflatz and the Highlights this Friday.” But Karsten insists that Kahale’s will remain a beer and shot bar. They don’t blend drinks and don’t use umbrellas, but they make a mean mai tai and their beer is ice cold. She took a few items off the food menu to streamline, but they still have wings ($5) and fries ($8) hot off the auto fry, plus other snacks. Prices are always reasonable on their drinks, too. “I really want to invite people that haven’t been here in a while to come back in and check it out, see what’s new,” says Karsten. “If you didn’t like it, give us another chance. I know we are kinda known as a biker bar, which is great. These guys are in here just like everybody else. But I really want the people who have that in their brain to give it one more chance. It’s Kahale’s, it’s a dive bar. There is gonna be biker sitting right there, and there is gonna be an attorney sitting right here. That’s just the way it’s going to be. I think they will enjoy it.” On Saturday, the Grand Opening starts at 10:30am and will go into the evening with bands all day, a blessing at noon, people’s favorite side dishes and libations provided by the bar.

Mission: Implausible But that doesn’t mean ‘Rogue Nation’ isn’t strong and exciting ★★★★★ Rated PG 13 / 131 Min.
T
he best scenes in Mission: Impossible–Rogue Nation have not been spoiled by the coming attractions trailers, a nice surprise in an age where previews work overtime to summarize (rather than adequately promote) a movie. In fact, the much publicized bit with Tom Cruise hanging outside an airplane (a stunning but actually brief scene) comes at the very beginning and is a mere warm-up. This time, Impossible Mission Force leader Ethan Hunt (Cruise) must reunite his team when a rumored “anti-IMF” group, called The Syndicate, comes after him. Hunt collaborates with a mysterious operative (Rebecca Ferguson, in a sensational, starmaking turn) who may or may not deserve his trust. Series MVP’s Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner are aboard, as well as a terrific Alec Baldwin and the always welcome Tom Hollander. Nothing here is remotely plausible, let alone “possible.” But when it cooks, it’s exciting. Combining some of the strongest elements of the prior entries, this plays like a greatest
hits medley of the series so far. There’s the stripped down, cloak and dagger elegance of the first film, some of the over the top flamboyance of the second film, the emphasis on spectacle and personal stakes from the third entry and the team dynamic, mixed with thrilling, you-are-there action, of the previous installment. I still think the first in the series, directed with playful but calculated precision by Brian De Palma, remains the finest in the series, while John Woo’s enormously successful but much disliked follow-up is underrated. The initial trajectory for this franchise seemed to be introducing a visually distinct and well established filmmaker for each entry, which went out the window with the third film. While J.J. Abrams’ helming of part three introduced a needed emotional element and had Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s series-best villain, it lacked the finesse of what came before it. The fourth entry, Ghost Protocol, gave the formula a shot in the arm, as the action and, more importantly, the sense of humor was strengthened. Another holdover from the first movie that makes a welcome return: the emphasis on silence as a tool to generate suspense. While Joe Kraemer’s score is sufficient

enough, the best scenes have no music, few sound effects or no noise at all. There’s an extended sequence, which begins underwater, becomes an outdoor chase, then generates into a different type of chase, that is simply breathtaking. It’s also the film’s peak, coming at the end of the second act.The wrap-up is satisfying, especially for fans of the original Peter Graves television series, though it’s lowkey in comparison to everything that came before it. Blending a John Le Carre-like spy drama with Indiana Jones-level spectacle and 007-type action only worked completely for the first movie, though this one tries to be a thinker as well as a seat-grabber. I missed the hidden domestic life of Ethan Hunt, which only the third film showed us. So much emphasis has been put on Cruise’s
above and beyond efforts to make these films, I fear many are forgetting he’s not playing Tom Cruise but an intriguing character. Cruise, again, gives it all he’s got but Hunt keeps us at arm’s length this time. Rogue Nation is a surprisingly strong entry in terms of the filmmaking. Director Christopher McQuarrie previously made The Year of the Gun and Jack Reacher but is best loved for his work as a screenwriter (having written the still-fantastic The Usual Suspects). In addition to moments that nod to the careful staging of De Palma and the anything-goes operatic qualities of Woo’s film, McQuarrie creates strong imagery that compliments both the film and televised predecessors that inspired it. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Just because you like things upfront and direct doesn’t mean everyone else does. In fact, some of the people around you are quite devoted to sneaky methods and shady dealings, despite whatever convincingly upright facades they maintain. But they’re hardly going to make you a PowerPoint presentation about all the ways they undermine you, are they? Now, the last thing I want is for you to become suspicious and paranoid; a mistrustful Leo is a terrible tragedy. But making it (once again) clear that you won’t take betrayal lying down will make it much more likely that it will never occur.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) When I was five, I stole a fancy pencil eraser from the drugstore. My folks made me give it back and apologize. I got the lesson: Stealing is Wrong. But as I grew older, I began to realize that the world is far more complicated than a 25-cent piece of rubber could possibly demonstrate. Sometimes the apparent criminal is actually the victim, and/or vice versa. Applying starkly black-and-white morality lessons across the board reflects a mentality suitable for schooling a kindergartener, not for navigating the complexities of actual life. Please demonstrate your depth and intelligence when passing judgment this week, by not simplifying it (or “dumbing it down”) one iota.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
It’s a lot easier to tear something (or someone) apart than to see the good in it (or him or her). Being critical is a forte of yours, and to your credit you usually do it in an intelligent way, with an eye towards improving whatever you’re critiquing. But, despite your good intentions (I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt here), finding ways to support and encourage someone’s art or progress is very different than improving it by pointing out its flaws. This week, the former would be a kinder and more effective method than the latter, considering your desired results. Say something nice. It may not come naturally or easily, but I’m sure you can do it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
I’d like you to avoid a bad habit this week. You Libras can be slightly afraid of emotion, or at least its expression. When things get too intense, you have this habit of sort of shutting down, rather than actually, you know, going there. Fine, you like to remain cool and avoid drama most of the time. But every once in a while, it’s good (and not just for you, but for those who love you) to lose your cool and get dramatically swept up by powerful emotion. This week, exactly that could happen, and I hope you let it; the fallout from any kind of explosion (especially a love explosion) would be almost entirely positive. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Some folks go their whole lives without thinking much about death, until, of course, they suffer it. Scorpios can’t understand that; many even have chapters where they consciously seek to be close to death, volunteering at hospices or caring for ailing relatives. Your unwillingness to shy away from heavy shit is a strength; one that someone close to you needs to share in right now. Let them lean on you. Be their patient guide into (and hopefully through) territory that they never thought they’d enter. Remember, it’s familiar to you, but be patient with your companion; they’re probably, on some level, freaking out. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Yes, that sea snake undulating towards you nearby is venomous, but it’s also gentle and shy, so don’t freak out. Its head is so small it would have trouble biting you, and you’d really have to abuse it before it would even try. That cone snail you’re about to step on, however, can pierce your wetsuit and possibly kill you. You’re unfamiliar with the environment you’ve found yourself in. Fine. That’s a decent enough excuse, for now. But if you don’t start learning about it (and the deceiving forms its dangers can take), fast, you won’t last long. Nor will you have anyone to blame but yourself.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Your pride is easier to swallow than aspirin these days, you’ve been doing it so much. While your humility and lack of pretension make you someone I actually admire, these things can be taken too far. Please don’t allow your flexibility and willingness to sacrifice to make you into a doormat, because there are several hundred people waiting in the lobby with very muddy shoes. There are times when you have to stand up, brush yourself off, and deliver a swift kick in the ass to anyone who tries to get past without your goodwill. Don your steel-toed boots, my dear, for this week is one of those. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Some other signs carefully plot their acts of generosity, in order to reap maximum gratitude, but not you; you know that doing something nice for someone shouldn’t be about what you’ll get in return. However, there is some merit to calculating the best vector and timing for any sweet gestures you make this week–not for your own benefit, but for that of the recipient. Accepting a gift is wonderful at almost any time, but it might prove more useful, tender, convenient, or entertaining at some times rather than others, when it might even be slightly inconvenient or cumbersome. When offering up the sweet gestures you have planned for this week, keep in mind that exactly when you give a gift can halve–or double–its value, and a little forethought will make sure it’s the latter. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’re a beautiful piece of antique furniture whose classic lines have been obscured by 13 coats of paint. All your corners have gone round, blurred by layers upon layers of multi-hued latex. The only way to expose your true beauty and get your edges back is to strip all the way down to the wood. The process is likely to be messy and at least slightly painful, but it’s the only way to get back to the naked, raw, beautiful version of yourself that’ll keep you from ending up on the sidewalk with the beat-up IKEA discards. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Level the playing field. I’ve never actually met an arrogant Gemini (you veer more towards cocky and overconfident, when you head in that direction). So you may not appreciate how that hubris, in those around you, can drag the whole game down for everyone, whether they’re playing or watching. Since you have to contend with a few self-proclaimed demigods to complete the task at hand, I’m allocating this task to you: poke holes in the dangerous, hydrogenfilled zeppelins of their superiority complexes, without blowing us all to kingdom come, or, of course, getting filled with hot air yourself.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
You’re a mutant, but unfortunately you didn’t develop any useful new features like telekinesis or gills. Your mutation is the equivalent of an extra finger on each hand; discovering a use for it (besides being a slightly faster than average typist) has, thus far, been difficult–so difficult that you’ve given up on trying to find one. This week, however, presents an opportunity so specific it’s as if you were designed for it. It’s nothing huge; in fact, its size is quite dwarfed by the tremendous positive effect it’ll have on your psyche–transforming your “liability” to an asset. I’d hate for you to miss it because you weren’t properly looking for it, so keep your eyes peeled and your extra fingers poised.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Don’t eat when you’re not hungry. That’s good basic advice that you almost never listen to. “But it’s my lunch break!” cries your anxious mind. So you force yourself to eat because it’s the time someone else decided you should eat, or because everyone else around you is eating, or because you’re bored. But just because a banquet’s been laid before you (and I mean this literally and figuratively) this week doesn’t mean you need to eat from it. Oh, go ahead and drink a half-glass of champagne and nibble on a cracker, to be polite, but please, please don’t load up your plate and pretend you’re famished when you’re not.
