criticism by doubling–no, tripling–down. Here’s an excerpt of their official response, as reported by Honolulu Civil Beat on Aug. 10: “We respect the views of the Consumer Advocate and we will continue to listen, learn and constructively engage with people throughout the state,” said the NextEra statement. “As we are in the beginning stages of the PUC review process, we are confident we will find more common ground as we further demonstrate the strong public interest benefits of this merger. To that end, our filed merger plan anticipates almost $1 billion in customer savings and economic benefits for Hawai‘i in the first five years after closing and we have already made commitments to customer cost savings, employees and community causes that compare favorably to other utility mergers.” A billion dollars in consumer savings? Wow–two months ago (in a joint June 10 press release issued after Hawaiian Electric shareholders approved the merger), NextEra and Hawaiian Electric only “committed to approximately $60 million in customer savings over four years.” Now they’re talking nearly a $1 billion in savings over pretty

On Aug. 13, Pacific Business News reported that the Chicago investment management firm Heitman Capital Management LLC has purchased the Shops at Wailea for $342 million. Some of those who work at the Shops have long speculated that the shopping center’s recent introduction of paid parking was a move to add a new revenue stream to the center, making it more attractive to a potential buyer. Can’t say whether this is true, but we can say that the paid parking situation at the Shops is a major headache–and not for merchants or customers, either. The last few times I’ve driven by the Shops at Wailea, I couldn’t help but notice that the long red and white arms of their new paid parking gates were pointed skyward, allowing (like the old days) just anyone to drive on in and park for no charge. At first I thought it was just a coincidence, but after the third time, I called the Shops to find out what was wrong. “I think they’re in the process of fixing something at the gate, but I don’t know,” the Shops’ spokesperson (who requested anonymity for some reason) told me on Aug. 12. Though she promised to get back to me with a specific answer, I’ve yet to hear from her. I can guess why: county officials say those fancy new parking gates–installed early this summer over serious objections from both merchants and customers–had a couple problems, including the fact that they don’t allow proper access to fire and emergency vehicles. “There seemed to be two issues,” county Communications Director Rod Antone said in an email, part of which was a forwarded message from the county Department of Fire and Public Safety (DFPS). “First, the size of the opening–too narrow–into the parking area that the gate serves and second, how to allow FIRE access through the gate.” Antone said that Shops management has already addressed the first problem. Indeed, there’s evidence of recent landscaping and lane-widening work around the entrance gate into the Shops. As for the second, not so much. “The access issue wasn’t discovered until

later when an emergency response to the area was needed,” stated the DFPS portion of the email. “Our office [the DFPS] reached out to the management and informed them that access was needed/required. They were advised to keep the gate up/open or risk having it forcibly opened if FIRE needed access to the area. The gate is probably open because management is still working out a way to give FIRE access through the gate.” “Had the Shops at Wailea not had an emergency for fire to respond to,” Antone added, “they would not have realized they had this issue.”

been growing to the merger, so Ono’s comments, which his office released yesterday afternoon, aren’t really a surprise. “Among many questionable claims, NextEra offers flawed and broad speculative savings estimates, repeatedly touting benefits of millions of dollars in savings for customers,” states an Aug. 10 news release from the office of the state Consumer Advocate. “The company’s filings do not clearly or consistently explain how these savings will materialize to the full extent they have been claimed. This includes, for example, millions of dollars in purported savings resulting from broad reductions in operations and maintenance expenses that have not been clearly laid out despite the company having ample opportunity to clarify these and other benefits during the discovery period.” For these reasons, Ono wants the deal scrapped–or at least modified with serious conditions that protect consumers and guarantee savings returns to ratepayers. “These kinds of asserted savings based on NextEra’s faulty calculations effectively overstate the potential benefits of the proposed

STATE CONSUMER ADVOCATE DENOUNCES NEXTERA/HAWAIIAN ELECTRIC MERGER Hawaii Governor David Ige isn’t a fan. Neither is Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa. Same with Sierra Club Hawaii Director Marti Townshend. And now we know that state Consumer Advocate Jeffrey Ono isn’t on board, either. I’m talking about the proposed merger between Hawaiian Electric Industries and Florida-based NextEra Energy, which (if approved) would be worth about $4.3 billion. For its part, the two companies insist that their merger will help Hawaii reach its clean energy goals (100 percent renewable power by 2030). But opposition has

merger, thereby creating an illusory benefit,” Ono said in the news release. “Since our mission is to protect and advance the interests of Hawaii’s consumers, we have serious concerns about this proposed merger.” As for NextEra, they responded to Ono’s

BATH & BODY WORKS OPENING AT QUEEN KA‘AHUMANU CENTER National retailer Bath & Body Works will open a store in the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center this fall. The Maui store will be the second location in the state; Bath & Body Works is also opening a store on Oahu. Bath & Body Works, a leader in the personal care industry, offers a variety of products including body care, home fragrance, hand soaps, ultra-pampering products, world-class personal fragrances, gifts and more. The specialty retailer’s own-branded product lines will be available at the new store including the Signature Collection, White Barn, Bath & Body Works Home Fragrances and Anti-Bacterial Soaps and Sanitizers. Taking a cue from Miley Cyrus, Burger King won’t stop partying. It’s bringing the fun back this Saturday, Aug. 22 from 11am to 2pm, with a face painter and balloon twister for the keiki. Oh, and there will be even more promotions and samples (AKA you won’t need that Burger King coupon flyer). The kids can also wear Burger King crowns, an honor complimentary of the restaurant. The list of rules for cigarette smokers is longer than that of a dad whose teenage daughter has just discovered boys. The County of Maui will possibly restrict even more areas of salvation for nicotine enthusiasts, adding to the lengthy amendment of non-smoke friendly locations which consist of just about every inch of the island save for your bedroom and a dingy dive bar. Now, the bus stop may become an illegal place to take a breather on your Marlboro in months to come. The Maui County Council’s Housing, Human Services and Transportation Committee will either make that a reality or shelve the bill at its Council meeting this Thursday, Aug. 20 at 1:30pm. Councilmember Mike Victorino, presiding officer of Pro Tempore, is the advocate behind the proposed bill, dubbing it with the short but sweet title “A BILL FOR AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 8.20, MAUI COUNTY CODE, RELATING TO PROHIBITING SMOKING AT BUS STOPS.” The relevant portion of the bill reads as follows: “Any bus stop established pursuant to chapter 11.07 of this code,” states the bill. “The area of the bus stop for which the smoking prohibition applies shall extend out from the bus stop sign and the

footprint of the shelter in every direction by twenty feet. The footprint of the shelter is defined by vertical planes extending down from the outermost edges of the shelter overhang or roof, if any.” What do you think? Is this bill an appropriate move to wipe out all traces of second-hand smoke in our public air? Or do you believe that the secondhand smoke controversy is overhyped? Should be an interesting council hearing.

News Of The Weird NEEDS TO FIND A NEW ROUTE Ran’dell Busch, 27, was in serious condition after being shot on July 26 near the corner of 18th Street and Emmet Street in Omaha, Nebraska. He was also shot in 2014 around the intersection of 18th and Emmet, and in 2012 was shot in a scuffle after running from the corner of 18th and Emmet.

FAILED EUROPEAN BUSINESS MODELS Grande Hotel San Calogero, the planned centerpiece of a Sicilian tourist renaissance, is still nowhere close to opening–61 years after construction began. It took 30 years to build, but then developers fought for 10 years over its management, and only later was a serious drainage deficiency discovered (repair of which Rome’s news site The Local reported in July remains unfunded). And construction of the ultra-modern Don Quixote airport (in Ciudad Real, Spain, about an hour from Madrid) was finished in 2006, but the $1 billion facility never opened, and in July, was sold to a Chinese investor for the equivalent of $11,000. (Bonus: Fictional character Don Quixote was, himself, noted for delusions of grandeur.)

Overlooked by the roundup of “state fair” foods listed in News of the Weird two weeks ago was the debut in June, at California’s San Diego County Fair, of the deep-fried SlimFast bar. A 200-calorie “diet bar” is breaded in pancake batter, fried, dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with chocolate.

THIS WEEK IN CEMETARY MARKETING A woman in a suburb of Beijing filed a lawsuit against the China Dragon Garden graveyard recently over her shock to find that not only was her own name affixed to a headstone in gold lettering but about half of the 600 plots were eerily marked for prominent (and still living) people to move into. It was a marketing plan, according to cemetery workers, to convince customers of the upscale neighbors (such as basketball star Yao Ming) waiting for them in the afterlife. (China’s aging population, and Beijing’s land scarcity, have driven up prices, intensifying competition and corrupt practices, according to a Los Angeles Times dispatch.)

THE CONTINUING CRISIS Texas’ highest criminal appeals court agreed on July 17, hours before Clifton Williams was to be executed, to a postponement until they could consider the significance of perhaps-faulty higher math presented to his jury in 2006. Prosecutors had claimed at his trial that the likelihood of another black man having Williams’ DNA profile was one in 43 sextillion (43 followed by 21 zeros, or 43 billion trillion). Texas officials have recently

recalculated the FBI-developed database and concluded that it was somewhat more likely that a second black man had Williams’ profile–one in only 40 billion trillion.

WAIT, WHAT? Jason Patterson, upset that New Zealand’s health care administration has rejected paying for gastric bypass surgery, announced in July that he will protest publicly by going on a hunger strike. “The first two to three days (will be) really hard,” he told Channel 3 News. And local officials in China’s Xinjiang region informed Muslim shopkeepers and restaurateurs in May that they will henceforth be required to sell alcohol and cigarettes (even though Islam forbids their consumption). An official told Radio Free Asia that the government aims to weaken religion.

CUTTING-EDGE SCIENCE Some owners may be petting their cats all wrong, cautioned recent research in issues of the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science by scientists from University of Lincoln in England and the University of WisconsinMadison. For example, felines seem to prefer face-caressing, especially between the eyes and ears, and are especially aroused, negatively, by tail-petting, especially at the base. Cats appear to be pickier about how their owners pet them than strangers, according to a Washington Post review of one article. The Wisconsin research revealed that cats better appreciate (or are annoyed less by) music written especially for their pitch (an octave higher) and tempo (mimicking purring) than traditional classical music.

WASN’T THIS IN ‘NAKED GUN?’ News reports from Georgetown, Texas, politely did not identify the councilman by name, but Mayor Pro Tem Rachael Jonrow confirmed that the man neglected to turn off his mobile microphone during a May meeting as he excused himself for a restroom break. Jonrow said she stoically ignored the men’s room sounds on the PA system–until the noise from a toilet’s flushing seemed to release the councilmembers’ pent-up laughter.

EPIC CLUMSINESS A guest at the upscale W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, had to be rescued by firefighters in July when he fell off of one machine in the hotel’s exercise room and got his head caught in the one next to it. Rescuers arrived with torches and saws, but managed to pull and push and manipulate the man’s head free (though he had “significant” injuries). And a 27-year-old man, entertaining friends at his home in Colmar, France, on the country’s National Day on July 14, suffered serious injuries when he fell from his third-floor balcony– while, said his friends, leaning over to spit on police officers below. ■

AMY HANAIALI‘I GILLIOM TALKING STORY ABOUT HER ROLE

IN EVITA, HA‘I MUSIC, NEW WINE LABEL

A

(MAPA) production of Evita. It’s 25 years after her first Evita performance, and this time the show is under the direction of David Johnston, with Andre Morissette handling choreography. “Evita is kicking my bootie!” she says. “Touring is one thing. It’s a lot of late hours and funky eating, you are on planes all the time, always moving. I try to keep a workout schedule, and I have Maddy–my daughter–and my mom lives with me. There are a lot of dynamics right now.” Gilliom is a full time entertainer, with a rigorous touring schedule. Why did she come back to the stage? “I kind of want to do something for myself right now,” Gilliom says. “I want to get more disciplined. Get back into voice lessons. You know, tune up my car. Andre, the choreographer, is kicking my bootie. I’m posting things up on my Facebook page and my fellow entertainers and friends are like, ‘Amy what are you doing? Is that tango dancing?’”

my Hanaiali‘i Gilliom’s name is synonymous with being one of Hawaii’s most successful contemporary Hawaiian recording artists. She’s recorded 16 albums, and is famously known for her immaculate Hawaiian falsetto style known as ha‘i. She has 22 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and five Grammy nominations. But many of her fans don’t know that Gilliom is also a great theatrical actor. In fact, when she started recording with Willie K back in the 1990s, she was fresh off of the Hollywood audition circuit, and had done studio work with Jamie Foxx, her college classmate. “Before that album in 1995 with Willie that started it all, I got a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Theatre from a music school in San Diego,” she says. “I grew up through Maui Youth Theatre and the Baldwin Theatre Guild. I was auditioning in L.A. a lot. Jamie Foxx was my classmate so (back when he was Eric Bishop) we would go up to L.A. and do studio work

role is very vocally demanding. I like that.” Twenty years ago, when Amy and Willie K began performing together onstage, Amy was having the opposite issue: how to craft her own stage persona. She was no longer playing a character in a play or musical, and she had to come up with her own stories to tell on stage. “When I first started entertaining with Willie, I had come from musical theatre school,” says Gilliom. “I played Mikado. I did full productions. I had the fourth wall up! I was like, ‘what do you mean, talk to the audience?’ You don’t do that! Suddenly I had to change, and break that. I had to entertain this new way. I had to come up with my stories. I had to come up with the story of me. It was very very different.”

Yes, playing Eva Peron is a lot of work for Gilliom, but it’s not her whole professional life. On opening night at the MACC, she will also be launching her new Hanaiali‘i Chardonnay, and debuting her newest musical album, also called Chardonnay. Both will be available at the MACC during the duration of Evita. “I’m a Gemini–I get bored really fast,” Gilliom says. “The wine is a challenge for me. I love that the wine is bringing music back into the stores which is really important, especially for Hawaiian music. People are just slowly starting to do the downloads for Hawaiian music now and I keep very close tracking on that. I’m doing more product placement with my music. all the time and do a lot of fun background vocals. Then I auditioned for Les Miserables and my number in line was 7,392 so I kind of thought, ‘hmmmm this is not really it.’ I looked across the way and saw a billboard for Natalie Cole playing at the Hollywood Bowl, and thought that is what I want to do!” Gilliom says she knew she wanted to go into show business from a young age. She started as a self-proclaimed theater geek at Baldwin High. Her grandmother, Jennie Napua Hanaiali‘i Woodd, was an entertainer and mentor to her. After college, Gilliom started producing shows herself with her brother Eric on Maui. “I was still doing a lot of back and forth to San Diego and L.A.,” Gilliom recalls. “Jamie [Foxx] was in In Living Color then and I was still flying up to do some work with him. I just wasn’t feeling it after a while and I came home. My brother and I started producing our own shows. We did them at Iao Theatre–the Maui Arts and Cultural Center wasn’t built yet. I did Evita, we did Godspell. These were our own productions at Iao Theatre.” This Friday, Aug. 21, Gilliom hits the stage in Castle Theatre as Eva Peron again in the Maui Academy of Performing Arts

The role of Eva Peron has both inspired and challenged Gilliom. I recently met her in the studio room downstairs at the MAPA building with her daughter Maddy to talk about becoming Evita. She says she was ready to sink her teeth into the script and choreography, no matter how demanding. During the show, Gilliom will wear 16 couture costumes designed for her by Kenneth Peter Lee, including one just for the curtain call. She jokes that the saltines and water in her purse are her dinner tonight, but her dedication to the character is evident. “I have to be honest, when I first started Evita I was telling David I have played myself onstage for 20 years,” she says. “It feels weird playing somebody. I love Eva Peron. I just love her, who she was. She was a powerful woman. She gave back to the people, gave back to the poor. She was active in women’s rights. A lot of the things I do right now. I had to sit by myself, just sit and try and figure out, what am I doing here? My mindset now is a lot different than when I played her 25 years ago. I was a lot younger then. I’m a lot more worldly now. I believe in a lot of the same morals and values that Eva does, but it’s still very hard. The

and her daughter. Gilliom and Maddy have had the same dance teachers, and have performed in Summer Camp productions. She says her mom sees and points out parallels in their personalities. Gilliom believes these arts programs help Maui keiki to find themselves and become “articulate young beings.” “Maddy’s performance in Oliver was very special for my family,” says Gilliom. “Watching her on stage was very special. She did great at blocking and direction, and I was looking at more of those technical kinds of things. I’m a mom but I’m an entertainment mom. Of course I think she is absolutely fabulous. But I was looking out to make sure that she was paying attention to those kind of things. Maybe she doesn’t want to go into entertainment in the future. On her father’s side, they are all mega-superstar athletes in New Zealand. She’s an incredible runner. I’m guiding her the best way I know how–the way I was guided in my life.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

EVITA Gilliom and her daughter Madeline Austin

Continued from page 11 music festivals. It’s doing stuff like that where I can be in complete control of the whole atmosphere happening in that evening.” Back in the 1990s, all musicians seemingly had to do was sell CDs at stores like Tower Records. “You know what was crazy?” Gilliom asks. “That the style of music, the falsetto called ha’i that I sing, you know Aunty Genoa Keawe was doing that. Aunty Leina‘ala Haili, all the greats were still doing it, but they weren’t doing it at the Waikiki Shell or touring. They were just under the radar. So when I started coming out, the Brothers Cazimeros was my first big concert in 1994, but it was already at the tail end of that era. Willie and I did my song ‘Haleiwa Hula’ and this other song I wrote in Hawaiian and literally the next day we sold 14,000 albums. People rushed the stores. But because the music scene has changed so much, things like that don’t really happen anymore. That’s like the last of that era.” Today, catching Hawaiian music up to digital downloads has been a tremendous effort. Gilliom (like all contemporary musicians) has to work smart. That means branding herself, then attaching that brand to merchandise, all in hopes of continually growing her fan base. Her new wine is a big part of that strategy. From producing her own concerts to creating her own wine, Gilliom has a non-stop schedule, but for her, attention to detail and to her brand is key. “The wine has been crazy,” says Gilliom. “I’m leaving for Napa tomorrow night. I have a barrel sampling of my second vintage. I was doing a theater concert in Napa, and we did a kanikapila action afterwards at the house at the vineyards. The people who are my wine partners now approached me and said, ‘Hey, would you ever consider doing a wine?’ I thought of course–I mean,

who wouldn’t want to do a wine? A lot of people drink in Hawaii and I love merlot. But I said the only way I would do it, like my music, is to my taste. I would want the wine to be like how I would drink the wine. Then I would totally be cool with that.” Her first vintage was a bold merlot that was released early this year. Selling the wine was a new chapter for her as well. “If I don’t understand how to do something, I will just be so grassroots,” says Gilliom. “I will just start making calls. How do I get this wine out? I get in the trenches of things. I called Mayor [Alan] Arakawa and I said, ‘Why don’t we have wine tastings here on Maui? Why can’t we taste it at Tamura’s?’ He was like, well, okay, let’s change that. We have wine tastings now. I have been at wine tastings at Pahoa on the Big Island. I have been to every Times Supermarket, every Safeway. I have met every single general manager at every box store in Hawaii. I walk in and they are like, ‘What are you doing here?’ and I say, ‘I want to sell my wine in here, you want to taste it?’ I have no problem doing that at all.” The story of her wine, from the flavor profile to the bottles, has all been a very personal part of Gilliom. The wine, called Hanaiali‘i, bears not only her name, but the design on the bottle is a tattoo she wears on her left arm. “The tattoo is an interesting part of my life,” she says. “I have a different one on that goes down the front of me I did in Tahiti a long long time ago after my grandmother passed. This one, the one that is on my bottles, I did after my father passed. This is a growth tattoo, and you don’t normally put a growth tattoo on the left side of your body, mostly you put them on the right side. But I wanted it to look like a jewelry piece. This is the pika design, the octopus design, and the hapuu fern in here (my daughter is half Maori, her dad is from

New Zealand). It’s all significant, my father is here. It signifies growth, like the octopus going into different areas with the tentacles, like me with my music.” Family is at the heart of everything Gilliom does. It’s what drives her and sustains her. Gilliom’s great great grandmother Hanaiali’i was a pure Hawaiian, born in a remote valley on the north shore of Molokai. Her grandmother Jennie Napua Hanaiali‘i Woodd was one of the original dancers at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and went on to New York’s Hawaiian Room at the Lexington Hotel to perform and choreograph Ray Kinney’s famous Hawaiian revue that sold out shows for 60 years. Woodd also performed on Broadway in Hellzapoppin, where she met Gilliom’s grandfather and later worked in Hollywood on TV and movies. Woodd eventually went to Las Vegas, where she choreographed and revamped Hawaiian shows at the Tropicana and other famous Vegas venues. She also taught hula to over 30,000 people in California. Now Gilliom is raising the next generation with her daughter Madeline Austin, who performs hula at Gilliom’s shows, tours with her and debuted her first stage performance in Oliver, a MAPA keiki production this summer. Gilliom says her family was very supportive of what she wanted to do, but they didn’t blow smoke when it came down to it. “My parents were always very direct and very honest with me,” she says. “If I did a junk performance they told me, ‘That performance wasn’t very good maybe you should practice harder.’ I think that is super important growing up in the entertainment business.” Gilliom says the Maui Youth Theatre, and later the Maui Academy of Performing Arts, have been beacons of guidance for both her

WHAT IT’S LIKE FOR MAUI RESIDENT LUCAS MILLER TO BE ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL SHOW ‘ALONE’

Lucas Miller

W

hat was the most terrifying place you’ve ever been dropped off? Was it the kindergarten bus stop, or the front door of the DMV? Perhaps the docking harbor of an island with the highest concentration of cougar attacks? Maybe the island seething with buffed out cats wasn’t a childhood memory or a destination on last week’s errands list. The secluded North Vancouver Island was also not on a list for new Maui resident Lucas Miller; that is, Miller’s spooky list rather than his catalog of most recently visited places. Miller, one of the four final contestants of The History Channel’s new television series Alone, did not recount his experience as one you’d see in a Syfy Channel homemade movie. Blood spillage and encounters with ravenous spliced animals were not brought up in my conversation with this television show survivor. There was a stare down with

a wolf, but imagine looking up into the eyes of a whalewolf crouching on the roof of your house. No, Miller focused on an even more phenomenal event that took place on the daunting island, even without all the quality CGI: his personal transformation. You’d expect some sort of metamorphosis to occur in Miller’s situation. No camera crew. No producers. These are the words The History Channel uses to describe the lonely circumstances of the ten contestants sent to the island, left alone to test who will last the longest; a first for reality television show feats. A mission with such a hazy horizon would lead most to derail into the persona of a madman and declare a volleyball as their best friend. For Miller, it was almost like a spiritual retreat. “Nature works with drawing out the poison in the wound,” he said. “And you might have to process the poison a few times.” Miller said that the poison serves as a

metaphor for emotions within ourselves that we normally push away, opting to ignore these feelings in favor of the comforting screen of our favorite Netflix show or the roll of gratifying likes our latest selfie produces. Miller’s only option of entertainment was a self-carved guitar. Or building a yurt. “When we strip away all those things we can’t run away,” Miller said. “Nature works in harmony and can flow through and out of you. Once you allow emotion to work through you, there’s a huge transformation that takes place.” Miller transformed back to a “childlike state” in which he let his emotions manifest into laughs and shouts. He said this contrasts with the real world, an environment that makes us wear a mask to protect an image. As Bowling For Soup’s song goes, high school truly never ends. Does that make the national park system the true Ivy League? Miller enjoyed the exposure to his psyche. He chose this show specifically because it wasn’t like a car with its headlights on, gleaming an obnoxious light on human drama. Spilling honest confessions for the camera was Miller’s hardest trial, but he preferred appearing “overly emotional” versus afflicting others with tears. Arguing over the proper technique to start a fire in his birthday suit was not Miller’s forte, as Alone’s Discovery Channel counterpart Naked and Afraid calls its participants to do. “It’s harder to be more compassionate, but we need to love each other more,” Miller said in regards to how eager people are to judge. Criticism is like claws that never sheathe, which only come out more when confronted with a reality television show star. Miller was not always quite the Dalai Lama, whom he joked about sounding like as he shared his insights. Although the show touts Miller and his cohorts as “experts,” a title he humbled with the alternative term “trained,” the initial weeks supplied trials and its accompanying negative thoughts. An epiphany struck Miller as he was building a cabin, a goal he said was “pretty ambitious, which was in line with who [he] was.” Miller was so aggressive towards his project that he realized his intent was based on his desire to impress viewers. “I don’t want to be on TV and look like a loser,” he said. “But as I processed it more, I began to have more pure intentions and started really enjoying myself.” This fresh purpose transfigured into an interpersonal

journey Miller hoped would have a positive impact on History’s audience. This isn’t his first project of goodwill. In fact, the Iowa native was scouted for the show from his work in wilderness therapy, assisting young adults in finding themselves and building trusting relationships, challenging endeavors considering their backgrounds. Miller now works for a new cause. Relocating from the mainland to Upcountry Maui to open an orchid, Miller aims to promote more respectful farming practices and stand against GMOs. He idealizes a future in which the public can work with those in power to “implement better farming practices.” He also plans to open a practice for Ayurvedic medicine, which combines yoga, herbal therapies, body work massages and diet shifts. Miller’s current masterplan excites him, but he still misses the straightforward lifestyle required of inhabitants of the wild. Living amongst the trees, Miller said he did what felt right. It was less “cerebral” and more “feeling.” And our society is all about maximizing our cerebral abilities to become super humans. “There are so many options on what we can do,” Miller said about modern life. “Being in the wilderness was simple. So simple and beautiful.” Breaking from the public service announcement of living a virtuous life free of materialism and media, I must inform you to tune in on Thursday, Aug. 20 (10pm/9pm Central) to find out who wins the $500,000 grand prize. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

Murder and Morality Woody Allen’s ‘Irrational Man’ is dark and fascinating ★★★★★ Rated R / 99 Min.

F

or decades, Woody Allen has been making a movie a year and never shown any signs of slowing down. He turns 80 in December, has 47 movies behind him, is currently making an original series for Amazon and is about to shoot his first film with Bruce Willis. Allen, one of the great American filmmakers, has managed to have an extraordinarily durable career, in spite of artistic and personal setbacks that have made him frustrating to his longtime fans and controversial for those following tabloid journalism. His films, whether on purpose or accidentally, sometimes come across like commentaries on his existence, both as an artist and as a flawed, troubled and contradictory man. While Allen’s comedies are beloved and the most famous of his cinematic output, his thrillers are even more fascinating and cause for celebration. It’s in his dark, laugh-free dramas that Allen hones in on the most mystifying aspect of human nature: how smart, educated and seemingly pleasant people can turn to murder. Irrational Man stars Joaquin Phoenix as

Abe, a highly regarded philosophy professor whose brilliance is countered with alcoholism and barely concealed inner demons. Jill (played by Emma Stone) is one of his students, and is infatuated with him and also the first to notice that there’s something noticeably wrong with Abe. Allen’s crisp, beautifully shot thriller is loaded with terrific dialogue, great performances and a welcome change of setting. Stone has never been more fetching and, again, is an excellent collaborator with Allen. Likewise, Parker Posey, a veteran character actress, skillfully underplays her pivotal role as Abe’s colleague. Phoenix, sporting a prominent pot belly, brings an expectedly odd quality to his character, conveying Abe’s mystery and lure. While Allen’s earlier works, both his comedies and dramas, have dealt with the correlating subject of murder, death and guilt, his latter works on the subject have an undeniable synergy. Along with the Scarlett Johannson-starring Match Point and the Colin Ferrell/Ewan McGregor vehicle Cassandra’s Dream, this creates a trilogy in which attractive, promising young adults find their bright futures tainted by the temptation to kill someone who “deserves it.” While

Woody said that if I'm good he'll cast me in Sleeper 2

Match Point was the most haunting (and one of Allen’s best) and the underrated, spellbinding Cassandra’s Dream was undermined by its abrupt ending, this one isn’t as strong but still gets under your skin. As in Match Point, Allen goes for a shocker finish, in which chance and luck play a part in whether the guilty escape or meet doomed outcomes. The climactic scene is clever and memorable but awkwardly staged. Far more effective is Allen’s ongoing theme of contradictions, as upbeat music plays over some of the most unsettling moments. Likewise, the beautiful Rhode Island vistas compliment the drama and provide an oddly rich palette for such a sinister tale. From the very start, it’s clear Allen is doing something different, as his traditional, black and white opening credits atypically

have no music playing over them, only the faint sound of cars driving by. The tight editing keeps the story focused and always moving forward, without any distracting subplots or needless scenes. The image I’ll never forget is when we see Abe walking away from a truly immoral act, the camera fixating on his face; the music playing remains joyful, perhaps a soundtrack to what’s playing in his mind, but we see the tortured look of regret and possibly defeat on his face. For all the laughter and joy Allen’s farces have given us, it’s his no-nonsense, bleak and troubling x-rays of mankind that have consistently stayed with me. Few modern filmmakers are better than Allen at exploring the maddening change within, in which the sane become irrational. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

There’s no question you’re full on. You rarely do things halfway; when you discover something new you’re into, you barely do anything else until you’ve exhausted your interest in it. Then you move on to the next thing. A tiny fraction of these exploratory ventures become part of your semi-permanent repertoire; most of them fall by the wayside and are rarely or never picked up again. Unfortunately, you occasionally do this with people. The problem: people can come back to haunt you. Beware this kind of haunting this week; however if it occurs, don’t flee from it in terror. There’s something you can learn here: making things right by making room in your life for something that’s not the absolute IT thing at the moment can still be quite rewarding. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Here’s a quote from an old TV show: “If you think life’s a vending machine where you put in virtue and you get out happiness, then you’re probably gonna be disappointed.” Tragically, many Virgos suffer under this kind of delusion. It’s easy to believe that life is a simple equation: you work hard, do good things, help people, and you’ll be happy and fulfilled. The equation’s often true–but not always. The trick is believing in and practicing it, even after some exceptions blow it off the page. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Three is your magic number this week. Nothing in pairs is likely to work; if you choose to hang out with just your lover, or one parent, or anyone oneon-one, you’re not likely to have a good time; about the only thing you’ll have is problems, and some of them might persist for an aggravatingly long time. Stick to threes and you’ll have a surprising amount of fun. This might mean consideration of some unusual companions–in fact, your best new friend might be someone you’ve usually considered a third wheel, not a happy third of a ménage á trois.

programming can mitigate or modify them, but they’ll never go away. Yes, people can transform–especially you, Aquarius. But there’s a limit to how much transformation is possible, and how permanent it is. Recognize this and figure out if the problems you’re having with someone you love are software conflicts–which can be resolved, with patience and time–or irreconcilable hardware incompatibility. Once that’s clear, how you proceed should be, also.

What do you do when you need a haircut but just don’t have time or money to get one? (Well, if you’re a teenage Scorpio, you just say, “Screw it,” and cut it yourself). Nowadays, you wear a hat. You have the same attitude towards emotional baggage, I see. It’s no big deal to cover something up as a temporary measure, but some people take it too far, amassing huge hat collections to hide their guilty secrets. Go ahead and keep yours under a hat–for now. But if it’s still there in three weeks, you’re in deep shit.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Capricorns have a way of dissolving into the background when they want to. This is one of those times. It doesn’t mean shit’s not happening to you, or that you’re not going through anything; it just means that no one notices unless you specifically call their attention to it–which can often take quite a lot of effort. So if you’re perfectly happy working through whatever’s going on for you by yourself, by all means, keep at it. But if you want companionship on this leg of the journey don’t suffer in silence–go out and get some. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Let’s pretend we’re robots. Some of our parts are hard-wired, and others are simply software. The former: things we just can’t change, no matter how hard we try or how much we want to. Adding new

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You’re like weather; everyone around you is affected by whatever you’re up to, whether they like it or not. Consequently, you tend to be surrounded by flexible, spontaneous, good-hearted people; those who aren’t up to being battered by your moods keep a good distance, if they can. However, every so often one of these more delicate individuals washes up next to you, and for whatever reason, can’t escape–like this week. Don’t take it personally when they find everything you do abrasive, offensive, or annoying. It’s them, not you. Instead of being hurt, be compassionate–go easy on the poor things, and turn down the brightness, just a little.

What happens this week is huge, only you may not notice it. A vastly important decision will be made, but with so little fanfare it’s likely to be eclipsed by something tiny and petty. It won’t even dawn on you that this huge step’s actually been taken until you start experiencing one of its many significant consequences, somewhere down the line. So what? It’s nice that this one’s an easy one, and there’s no point in making a big deal about it, or getting in the way. I just mention it so you can appreciate, admire, and relish the moment as it happens, instead of having to do so in retrospect.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

There are some skills and assets you possess that you just can’t easily and tastefully reveal in mixed company. For instance, how do you let someone know they should date you because you’re fantastic at oral sex, without being so crass you put them off? This is why you should also develop a vast array of front-line credentials, things people can be impressed by during casual small-talk. You’re already the shit once people get to know you–this week, work on improving your first impression.

...to questions from page 4

So many Pisces have less-than-perfect eyesight for a reason: You have trouble focusing. Sometimes all you can see is the big picture, without any details. And other times you view everything through such a tiny filter that your whole life seems just one way, i.e., you’re as perpetually unlucky and miserable as Lemony Snicket’s Baudelaire orphans, or as chronically upbeat and happy as Big Bird. This is why you occasionally need the perspectives of those around you, to keep things in balance, to help you remember that yes, your life is not all shit, or that you’re not always such a righteous and perfect person. This week, notice who the people are who do this for you–and figure out what you can do for them.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Here it is again, your perpetual dilemma: practical considerations duking it out against impractical dreams. What’s it going to be? Buckets of money, doing something that isn’t especially bad or soulkilling, but also isn’t all that inspiring? Or the leap of faith that may amount to nothing and cost you everything? I urge you: at least consider both options. That’s all I’m asking: seriously think about it. It might be exactly the right decision for you to keep on the path you’ve been on and wait for a better time. But I guarantee you’ll be happier walking that path once you’ve rigorously questioned it. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Cancers like being prepared for things. You may claim to like surprises, but you secretly despise them. When you’re startled, you’re quite likely to clam up and retreat into your shell, and like any shy hermit crab, it takes you quite a while to come out again; in the meantime, even patient visitors usually get bored and take off. That’s why I’m delighted to advise you this week–stay alert but not on edge. You’re likely to be caught off-guard at least three times this week. Happily, not a single one of these shocks will turn out to be anything but good news and good times.
