acknowledges that it doesn’t need to train in every square inch of the ocean and that it can take reasonable steps to reduce the deadly toll of its activities.” According to Earthjustice, here are the new rules the Navy must follow when training in Hawaiian waters:

Election winner?

CANDIDATE JOE BLACKBURN OFFERING FREE DONUTS When you’ve already lost the same election twice in a row, I guess you need to try some unusual campaign tactics. In his third attempt now at winning the Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu Maui County Council seat, land broker Joe Blackburn has already told the press that he and his people would pluck weeds from Eha Street in Wailuku and give out free pancakes (in early August, Blackburn said his campaign handed out “over 500 plates”). Now he’s trying donuts. “Every Thursday between the hours 8 and 10 am Nathan Nunuha and the Friends of Joe Blackburn will be giving away free Donuts at the corner of Vineyard and Market Streets in Wailuku at Blackburn’s Corner,” states the Friends of Joe Blackburn press release Blackburn himself emailed me this morning. For those keeping score at home, Blackburn lost to incumbent Councilman Mike Victorino by nearly 14,000 votes in 2012 and not quite 13,000 votes in 2014. Of course, Victorino can’t run again in 2016 because of term limits, which ordinarily means Blackburn might have a decent shot of winning the seat this time. Except–and this is a big EXCEPT–current Maui County Managing Director Keith Regan has also announced that he wants to succeed Victorino. Regan’s campaign manager/wife Lynn ArakiRegan misses few opportunities to publicize her candidate/husband (she even sent out a press release to nearly three dozen news organizations and reporters announcing that Keith would hold a “watching party” for the Sept. 5 USC-Arkansas State football game at Watercress Sports Bar in Wailuku). How do you run against that? Then again, we are talking free donuts here…

WHALES WIN BIG VICTORY OVER US NAVY Looks like it’s no longer full steam ahead for the U.S. Navy when it comes to its military exercises in the Pacific, the nonprofit environmental law organization Earthjustice announced yesterday. In an historic federal court settlement, the Navy has agreed to limit its use of mid-frequency sonar and explosive underwater demolitions during its military training exercises off Hawaii and California. In late March of this year, a federal court in Honolulu found that the Navy’s training illegally harms far too many marines species, including whales, dolphins and seals. “If a whale or dolphin can’t hear, it can’t survive,” said David Henkin, an attorney for Earthjustice (which brought the initial court challenge on behalf of the Conservation Council for Hawaii, the Animal Welfare Institute, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Ocean Mammal Institute), in a Sept. 14 news release. “We challenged the Navy’s plan because it would have unnecessarily harmed whales, dolphins, and endangered marine mammals, with the Navy itself estimating that more than 2,000 animals would be killed or permanently injured. By agreeing to this settlement, the Navy

• The Navy can no longer use midfrequency active sonar and explosives for training on the eastern side of Hawaii Island and north of Molokai and Maui. This will protect Hawaiian monk seals and small resident populations of toothed whales, like the endangered false killer whales and Cuvier’s beaked whales. • The Navy must not exceed a set number of major training exercises in the channel between Maui and Hawaii Island and on the western side of Hawaii Island. This limit[s] the time marine mammals in the area will be subjected to the sonar and explosives the Navy uses in its big training exercises. • Navy surface vessels must use “extreme caution” and travel at a safe speed when transiting the humpback whale habitat, to minimize the chance of whale strikes. “Some of the marine mammals threatened by Navy activities are already on the brink of extinction, such as the Hawaiian monk seal, our state mammal and one of the world’s most endangered species,” said Conservation Council for Hawaii’s Marjorie Ziegler in that Sept. 14 news release. “This settlement helps protect marine habitat the [National Marine] Fisheries Service just last month identified as essential to the seal’s survival.” According to a Sept. 14 Los Angeles Times story on the settlement, a Navy spokesperson explained that the Navy went along with the settlement because of “the real possibility that the court would stop critically important training and testing.” The Times then quoted Lt. Cmdr. Matt Knight, spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, as saying that the “Navy has been, and will continue to be, good environmental stewards as

HPR STARTS NEW ‘ALOHA AINA’ RADIO SERIES This week, Hawaii Public Radio started a new 13-week series that explores the concept of “aloha ‘aina”–love of the land–that, if it lives up to the description made in the first episode, which aired on Monday, Sept. 21, will provide some of the most accessible commentary and history of Hawaii’s people and land. The series consists of about 65 twominute episodes, and one will air each weekday morning on HPR-1 at 8:18am. According to HPR, the series includes commentary from “noted Hawaiian scholars and leaders” like Puanani Burgess, Sam ‘Ohu Gon, Davianna McGregor, Jonathan Osorio and Walter Ritte. “When we first sat down with HPR a year ago, our goal was to help listeners–all listeners–deepen their reverence for the land and natural resources that sustain us,” said Dr. Kamanamaikalani Beamer, president and CEO of The Kohala Center, which coproduced the series, in a Sept. 17 HPR news release. “With the words ‘aloha ‘aina’ gaining heightened prominence in local, and even global, discourse and consciousness in recent months, the timing of such an exploration couldn’t be better. We’re excited and truly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Hawaii Public Radio to bring this series to the people of Hawaii and the world.” Julia Steele, an editor at Hana Hou! magazine and the founding editor of Honolulu Weekly, did the writing, research and narration for the series. If the brief introductory episode is any guide, the series will provide important historical and socio-political context and explanation for Hawaii today. “We’ll look at the cataclysmic changes that came with contact with the West and the arrival of capitalism and the idea of land as private property,” Steele says in the first episode. “We’ll examine the Mahele of the 1840s, the emergence of sugar as an economic juggernaut, the rise of the forces hostile to the monarchy, and, through it all, the way Hawaiians maintained aloha ‘aina and sought to defend and honor the land–the maka‘ainana as well as leaders such Queen Lili‘uokalani and Joseph Nawahi. our nation are heard through our citizens exercising their right to vote. As President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said: ‘Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.’” Yeah, voter turnout rates are bad, and there’s no question that the trend is a downhill slope. But when you look at the actual voter turnout data over the last few dozen years, it’s a bum rap to say Hawaii is the worst in the nation. In fact, Hawaii has consistently outvoted the nation. Here’s a simple table showing voter turnout rates in presidential election years (when you typically see the highest turnout) going back to 1992:

REP. TULSI GABBARD SAYS HAWAII NOT VOTING ENOUGH Yes, voter turnout in recent years (okay, decades) has pretty much sucked. Given the rise of big money contributions and the decline of candidates who exhibit the emotions and empathy of regular-type human beings, this is hardly surprising. Well, Congressional Representative Tulsi Gabbard, D–Hawaii, has noticed, and isn’t pleased. “Voter participation in Hawai‘i has been declining since 1959, and in the last few elections, our voter participation rates have been among the lowest in the country, with just half of registered voters actually turning out to vote,” said Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard in a Sept. 22 news release. “Our nation is founded on the principles of an active, engaged democracy, and we are at our best when the diverse voices of

To show off its commitment to clean energy, the County of Maui’s tent at the Maui Fair will feature a couple Tesla electric vehicles and a visit from racecar driver and entrepreneur Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima. “We are excited to bring the electric vehicle display to this year’s fair to give Maui residents a glimpse of how transportation in Hawaii is changing,” said Shem Lawlor, the Clean Transportation Director at the Blue Planet Foundation (which is partnering with the county on the Maui Fair tent) in a Sept. 18 county news release. “Electric vehicles are already lowering transportation costs for families across the state. They are improving our environment and economy through reduced greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on imported oil. Electric vehicles really are the future of driving in Hawaii. And Monster Tajima is leading by example, demonstrating the power of electric vehicles on and off the racetrack and bringing this message to a wider audience.” Tajima won the Asia Pacific Rally Competition five times and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) six consecutive times from 2006 to 2011, according to the county. He will be at the County’s tent on Thursday, Sept. 24 after the parade until 8pm; Friday, Sept. 25 from 6-8pm; and Saturday, Sept. 26 from noon-1pm.

precedented matched donation by Sunil Dharod, President and Chief Executive Officer of SSCP Management. This year’s Golf Classic was part of the new Hawaii Food & Wine Festival Ka‘anapali, bringing a unique twist to the annual event with gourmet food and cocktails throughout the course. Forty teams vied for top honors with prizes ranging from a 2015 Maui Toyota Corolla to signed copies of HFWF’s official cookbook. The Golf Classic winners included Royal Lahaina Resort (Gary Hogan, Tom Bell, Peter Hehemann), which took first place; Roy’s Restaurants (Sharon Brown, Denise Hayashi Yamaguchi, Joe Melville), which placed second; and Royal Lahaina Resort Team #2 (Jerry Sager, June Pagdilao, Jansen Medeiros), which placed third. The donation-generating event culminated with a “hole-in-one” dinner and awards presentation emceed by Guy Hagi at Roy’s Ka‘anapali.

akala Visitor Center (9,741 foot elevation) to get them. That’s because the park’s Headquarters Visitor Center (located a mile past the Summit entrance station at 7,000 foot elevation) will be closed until late November. “Backcountry users are strongly encouraged to obtain their permits a day in advance,” states the news release. “Haleakala Visitor Center is 11 miles past the Summit entrance station and is open from sunrise to 3pm each day.” The reason for the closure? Some pretty major building repairs, including roof replacement, seismic and structural repairs and entrance renovations, according to a Sept. 18 news release from the park. Park officials say the closure includes the visitor center, restrooms, car parking lot and bus parking. “The roof had been scheduled for replacement in Summer 2015,” HNP Chief of Interpretation and Education Polly Angelakis said in a follow-up email, also sent out on Sept. 18. “The ceiling beam crack and subsequent repairs occurred in late February 2015. The doorway will be reconfigured so that wind and rain will not blow directly onto visitors or flood the visitor center. A wall will replace the existing interior doors. A new door will be built in the left interior wall of the existing foyer (where the S. Cayless mural is).” Work on the building began on Monday, Sept. 21. “The Headquarters Visitor Center roof, seismic, and structural work are estimated to cost $238,741,” stated the first HNP news release. “The renovation of the building’s entrance is estimated to cost $54,170. Both projects are funded by park entrance fees.”

The Federal Aviation Administration recently granted (likely for the first time ever) an application to fly a paper airplane. Prominent drone advocate Peter Sachs had applied to conduct commercial aerial photography with his “aircraft” (a Tailor Toys model with a tiny propeller and maximum range of 180 feet), and the agency, concerned with air traffic safety, accommodated by treating the request (unironically?) under the rules for manned flights (that, among other restrictions, Sachs must not exceed 100 mph and must engage a licensed airplane pilot to fly it). “With this grant,” said the “victorious” Sachs, “the FAA has abandoned all logic and sensibility.”

Because temperatures were in the high 90s the last weekend in August, tourists visiting the historical Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland were greeted by the outdoor sprinkler system dousing them near the gates. It was intended as relief, said operators, to keep guests from fainting, but, as one Israeli visitor said, “It was a punch to the gut”–too reminiscent of Auschwitz’s gas chamber. (Jewish prisoners had been marched calmly to their deaths under the pretense that they were only being taken for showers.)

DIY DENTISTRY?! DIY dentistry seemed off-limits–until amateur orthodontia got a boost from a 2012 YouTube video in which Shalom DeSota, now 17, praised rubber bands for teeth-straightening. DeSota’s family lacked dental insurance at the time, so the would-be actress experimented by looping rubber bands around two front teeth she wanted to draw together. Many painful days later, she succeeded. The American Association of Orthodontists expressed alarm in August at the video’s recent popularity. So much could go wrong–infection, gumtearing, detachment between tooth and gums–that DeSota, the organization said, had simply been lucky.

All Sherri Smith wanted was copies of background emails about her son (who has a disability) in the files of the Goodrich, Michigan, school system, but the superintendent informed her in June that the Freedom of Information request would cost her $77,780 (4,500 hours of searching–taking two years to complete). Michigan’s FOI law was somewhat liberalized on July 1, and Smith said she may refile. And after a McKinney, Texas, police officer was filmed pointing his gun at unarmed black teenagers at a pool party in June, the online Gawker Media filed a Public Information Act request for the officer’s records and any emails about his conduct. The city estimated that request’s cost at

$79,229 (hiring a programmer, for 2,231 hours’ searching–plus “computer time”). Gawker said it would appeal.

GOVERNMENT INACTION The streets of Jackson, Mississippi, apparently have potholes that rival the worst in the country, but without adequate budget to fix them, according to Mayor Tony Yarber. His remedy, offered earnestly to constituents in August: prayer. “I believe we can pray potholes away.” (Yarber, elected in 2014, was pastor of the Relevant Empowerment Church.)

LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE “Selfies” continue to take their devastating toll on Americans. On Aug. 30 in Orient, Maine, driver Jordan Toner, 29, attempting to lean into a seven-person selfie among his passengers, crashed into a tree, causing numerous injuries. On Aug. 24, Alex Gomez, 36, of Lake Elsinore, California, tried to take one after draping an angry 4-foot-long rattlesnake around his neck. The predictable bite was damaging but not fatal. On Sept. 1 in Houston, a 19-year-old man taking selfies while clumsily fondling his handgun is no longer with us.

MORE ‘SLOW TV’ Norwegian TV viewers have somehow given strong ratings to a series of seemingly interminable programs (a continuous camera on a salmon-fishing vessel, 12 hours of live log-burning with commentary, five hours of knitters spinning their way to a world record, 100 straight hours of chess-playing, a five-day stretch from a cruise ship), and in August were presented another such gift. The Norwegian caviar company Mills said it would live stream, on a YouTube channel, nearly 11 months of fish eggs aging 24/7 in barrels–7,392 hours of “programming.”

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES Alexander Carlsson, 25, was jailed in Sanford, Florida, in August on federal child pornography charges, but also told agents that he is a “clopper,” which identifies him, he said, as one who masturbates while gazing at figurines and pictures depicting Hasbro’s My Little Pony toys.

BEST DERBY NAME EVER A thief grabbed the purse of an elderly woman shopping with her husband at a Fred Meyer store in Spokane, Washington, on July 23 and fled through a parking lot. They had no chance to catch the man, but he happened to run right by hospital nurse Heidi Muat, 42, who surmised the situation and started after him. The thief quickly saw that Muat could outrun him, and he gave up the purse, which Muat returned to the couple. Muat later revealed her alter ego: On her Spokannibals Roller Derby team, she is known as Ms. “Ida B. ChoAzz.” ■

Maui is full of creative types, but does that translate into high fashion? The burgeoning group of fashion movers and shakers dedicated to furthering the island’s industry says yes. But not all of the makers are dedicated to being commercial–in this year’s Fashion Issue lineup, you’ll find designers committed to their vision, which for some ventures into the avant garde. Here’s our look at some of Maui’s boldest designers.

Kojo Couture Koa Johnson resets the bar for glam on Maui. His sixpiece collection for the Mamo Wearable Arts was inspired by iwi (native Hawaiian bones), the significance of the discovery of bones and how they are treated. The looks were sewn in sheer black mesh and solid lycra, showing a new side of Kojo Couture. Johnson has surrounded himself with his own fashion team, stylist Ry-n Shimabuku and photographer Marie Jalayahay of Marylane photography, designing, styling and photographing looks–including the MauiTime newspaper gown on the cover. “I believe there is a very small window of the fashion industry here on Maui, but I also believe there’s a huge group of creative individuals who contribute to the ‘Fashion scene’ here on Maui,” says Johnson. “In my six years of doing fashion here on Maui, I’ve created my own scene and existence of fashion. There’s a huge ‘boho chic’ look that Maui is very known for with earth tones, bathing suits and beachwear, but I never wanted to fall into that look, so I created my vision of what fashion should be here on Maui, which is filled with glitz, glam, high end couture. “I’m currently doing a bridal collection for a bridal boutique on Oahu named WhiteHot Hawaii with the owner Daisy Merto. Daisy reached out to me through Instagram and social media. She loved my bridal designs and enlisted me

to create a bridal collection for her store. I’m creating a sixpiece collection called OPULENCE by KoJo and the collection is filled with a lot of crystals, ball gowns, fitted and flared dresses and accents of effortless detail. My bride would be described as someone who desires rich and lavish style when it comes to her wedding. Everything in the collection will be pure white with luxurious glitz and glam. The show will debut on Oahu at WhiteHot Hawaii early October.”

RY-N SHIMABUKU makeup artist and stylist Ry-n Shimabuku’s makeup and hair can be witnessed on the cover of this year’s and last year’s fashion issue, as well as the catwalk at this year’s Mamo Wearable Art Show. His clientele and makeup talents are diverse and conceptual. For the cover look he knew he wanted to do the model’s hair in an updo, to balance the volume and elegance in the shape of the dress. The makeup idea was extreme cat eye. Shimabuku’s tools of the trade always include his custom eyeshadow palette from Makeup Forever. To that he added a Jordana cosmetics super fine brush liquid liner. The matte burgundy lip is trending right now, so he used a new color from M.A.C. cosmetics called “Sin.” To see more of Ry-n’s work, go to Ry-shimabuku.com or call 808-283-5131. “I find that most makeup trends each season can be bro-

ken down into four categories: clean skin, a pop of color, a bold lip and some sort of graphic liner,” says Shimabuku. “One current trend that was seen last season that i’m loving now is metallic textures. The easiest way to metallics is on the eyes, but I’ve recently played with sheer, metal textures on the cheeks and lip which was really fun. Recently at New York fashion week, models were sent down the runway at Givenchy with lace and crystal face masks. It’s not practical at all, but was the most fun makeup look I saw. I translated it with vintage jewelry on myself for a masquerade party and photo shoot.”

SAMANTHA HOWARD Wings Hawaii A stop at the Wings Hawaii shop is like a visit to a Maui fashion incubator. Owner and designer Samantha Howard opened a small shop with her business partner Melody Torres in the Pauwela Cannery and they’ve been rolling out some of the most innovative and authentic Maui beach glam looks ever since. With several appearances in national magazines, including the coveted Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue over the years, they’ve exalted their grassroots gem couture. Today they have a beautiful Hana Highway Paia shop where they carry their extraordinary collections. Right now, their pau hana short and tank sets made from Vintage Aloha Prints are hot, as are their beaded necklaces, pearl and crystal jewelry. Howard also recently designed a hieroglyph-inspired enamel set of bracelets rings and necklaces. In the next month, she’ll launch a new dress and tank shape that Wings Hawaii is really excited about.

also check them out at Freetobememaui.com. “My muse comes from my dreams,” says Kirchhof. “It’s that time of day I’m relaxed and able to create freely. Before going to bed, that’s when my imagination takes over and outfits and designs are visual and real. My best designs come from my dreams.”

SHARON CLEMONS Elisharon Eli and Sharon Clemons are the married dynamic duo behind the label Elisharon. Their customer is cool, hip and classic, and wants to be noticed. They’re currently developing their second line under the label THE ODD CPL, which features a modern twist on matching aloha wear with coordinating outfits for women and men in graphic black and white cotton and linen. “My fashion philosophy? One day at a time,” Howard says. “After 10 years, we have still held strong to our grassroots concepts of producing as much we can by our own hands, from jewelry to our clothing lines. I’m obsessed with pearls, heshe beads, crystals, ammonites and hieroglyphic designs. There are like 20 different artists in our store–they are all made on Maui, curated by us. The designs I’m making come from such a different place than just the superficial surface that it transcends trends. My shell jewelry is seasonal, depending on what I find. I’m always full of ideas.”

STANETTE KIRCHHOF Free To Be Me Kirchoff designs the Free to Be Me jewelry line with new upcoming trends that are unique and edgy. She likes to use 14k gold, sterling silver, precious metal, stones and Tahitian pearls in her bold, layered pieces. She began designing as a young girl, taking apart her own necklaces and customizing them. In 2012, she took her skills from hobby to full time. “Our designs are pieces that can be seamlessly integrated into an individual’s wardrobe,” says Clemons. “We work with classic silhouettes that way you’ll have clothes you’ll love and want to wear season after season. We want to pump up the basics in your wardrobe. It’s what we call, ‘elevated basics.’ We want our customer to feel special and know that they will be wearing something that won’t be seen on hundreds of people. Instead of producing for the masses, we will be making limited runs–no more than 25 pieces– of each garment we create. We also want to keep production local.”

SARA PLESSET Indie Attire Plesset is passionate about upcycling. She says her customers care about where their clothing comes from. Was it made in a developing nation for pennies by an exploited worker and then shipped around the world? Or was it handmade from start to finish right here in Makawao? Indie Attire people know how important it is to support local, handmade clothing–items not just designed here, but sewn here, too. Her bikini designs reflect comfort, durability, functionality and flattery of the various shapes and sizes of the female body. Keep an eye out for upcoming one-piece swimwear. The Mercantile in Makawao carries her upcycled one-of-a-kind bikinis and The Bikini Market in Kihei carries the standard swimwear collection. Also available online at Etsy.com/shop/indieattire. “The fashion industry is unsustainable and harmful to ecosystems and human life,” says Plesset. “I believe that it needs to wake up to all of the destruction it’s causing, not only in the environment but also by perpetuating inequality throughout the world and causing

women to have negative body images. By supporting local designers who are creating handmade clothing and sourcing upcycled fabric, we can start to change the fashion industry. The best way to change things is by voting with your dollars: stop supporting big chain stores that sell shirts made in China for $3. They with fall apart in three washings anyway. Shop for local and handmade clothing. When that isn’t possible, shop for handmade clothing on sites such as Etsy.com.”

AUDREY MCSHANE ReMused Clothing Remused Clothing is a remarkable line of repurposed denim that has one-of-a-kind prints that are handbleached by designer Audrey McShane or her boyfriend

Marcelo Souza. McShane’s style is indicative of her 14 years as a Henna artist: she’s attracted to the ornate and floral. She says her favorite design is the mandala on long pants–each one unique as a snowflake. Find ReMused at The Enchantress in Wailea, Nectar in Paia and on Etsy, Instagram and Facebook as ReMused Clothing. “I believe my customers love to be different and support local artists,” McShane says. “I have a lot of returning customers from the Mainland of all ages who are hair stylists and artists themselves. My favorite client is Steven Tyler so, I guess I have one rock star fan. My designs are like tattoos that can change with your mood.”

GILLIAN ADAMO Gscout Hawaii G Scouts leather handbags can be soft and supple, fringed, raw or black and bold. Adamo’s designs are varied to appeal to the lifestyles of her customer–the free thinker, with a passion for life and art. Her daughter Cheyenne Jagger is the metalsmith creating the hand-pounded silver rings in the bags. Adamo learned to make her signature leather braids in Nepal, and has never looked back. “These bags are made from deer and cowhides,” says Adamo. “My design ethic is one of the utmost respect and love for the animals that I work with. Animals have given me comfort, awe, love and laughter throughout all the seasons of my life. I honor the life of every animal, including each one that is a part of the bags I create.”

San Lorenzo Liseeth started San Lorenzo bikinis while in college at the University of Hawaii. Today, the Brazilian cut bikini brand has stores all across the state and will soon open a third Southern California location. They’re also carried in Nordstrom and Revolve. The suits offered at Sanlorenzobikinis.com are extensive, and the brand is focusing on becoming a global name for swimwear with her top designs like the Braided Hipster Strap, Braided Thong, Cut Out Wrap, Interlace One Piece and Crop Hipster. “I’m a true world trotter, beach chic entrepreneur to the core,” says Lisseth. “And our design aesthetic comes from traveling and being inspired by what surrounds us. I’m always looking for the trendiest designs that are full of life. I pride myself being from South America, and our fabrics are one of the best out there. Most of our collections are designed with different parts of the world in mind, such as our “Vintage Aloha” collection, which is inspired by traditional Hawaiian culture, or our “Mind Bali Soul” collection, which is inspired from Balinese culture.”

PAM STREET Zella Jewelry Zella Jewelry’s designer Pam Street credits the ocean floor as being the muse from which her distinctive old world-meets-modern look is influenced. Street likes to mix metals and Argentium silver with 18 and 22 karat gold, using a technique called granulation. Her signature is a bit of gold in every handmade piece. Some of her favorites are symbolic like the Angel Wing Freedom Pendant with Argentium silver, 22k gold and diamond, which represents freedom from her marriage. to be inherent in how we adorn our bodies. A majority of what is offered for consumption is fast fashion that has very little environmental conscience but a lot of short term emphasis on aesthetics and trend. My aim is to prioritize eco-friendliness and craftsmanship while infusing my background in hula and Hawaiian culture into the pieces.”

BRITTANY ESPOSITO Wanderlust Fashion Brittany Esposito describes her Wanderlust brand as a simplistic Bohemian beach vibe. Her wire-wrapped sea glass, agates, crystals, hemp macrame pouch pendants and geode dream catcher fringe necklaces exude an appreciation for roaming wherever your heart takes you. Her newest designs include more macramé, neutral tones and two-piece sets for layering. Buy them at Cafe Cafe in Lahaina or online at Wanderlust-Fashion.com. “As a child, I was in awe of my mother’s jewelry box,” Street says. “I could spend hours looking at all the beautiful stones and shiny gold. I’ve always been interested in beautiful jewelry, so five years ago I took my first metalsmithing class at the Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center. I was hooked after the first 10 minutes. I’ve been creating jewelry ever since. Learning new techniques and being around creative women and men inspires me. I’ve been very fortunate to have learned from some great masters at the Hui.”

ANNA KAHALEKULU Kulua Anna Kahalekulu aims to please her customer, which she describes as anyone who has a love for Hawaii. She designs pieces appropriate for special occasions, but also taps into everyday life looks for the office, nights out to dinner or coming home after the beach. Her current collection, called Kulua, uses her two favorite materials–silk and lauhala–satisfying her organic aesthetic. They also walked the catwalk at the Mamo Wearable Art Show. Kahalekulu will launch a small collection in the next month that will focus on her go-to silhouettes: the maxi; shorter, flirty dresses; a comfortable jumpsuit; and mixable separates. Contact her at KuluaMaui.com or at Facebook.com/kuluamaui. “I fell in love with conceptual design and storytelling through fashion at the Fashion Technology program at UH Maui College,” says Kahalekulu. “Overall, the industry has gotten away from the craftsmanship and thought that used

“My designs can be dressed up or down,” Esposito says. “You can wear them barefoot in a bikini and cut-off shorts or pair them with a lace top and heels. You can be wearing them on a hike through the bamboo forest or prancing around the streets of L.A. People that wear my jewelry appreciate the stories of the shells, stones and sea glass. They are travelers and adventurers who appreciate the outdoors and the ocean, but also enjoy a night in the city. You can find them around the necks of beach bums, surfers, festival goers, moms, grandmothers, high schoolers, college students and chic city fashion bloggers.”

MICHELLE LOU LAN MeshYoga Michelle Lou Lan wants to make the best yoga pants in the world. She says her special extra-thin fabrics make pants that can go from the mat to evening wear. Lan is a shopaholic, her inspiration came in owning every brand of yoga pant out there, and believing in her own designs. Her customers are girls who love yoga, shopping and the beach. Find her yoga wear at her Paia store and studio or online at Meshyoga.com. “If you look on the tags of our clothing line they say, ‘Dreamed on Maui, Made in NYC’ and it’s true,” says Lan. “I credit Maui for most of my inspiration and creativity. I want everyone to believe that we have the comfiest yoga pants in the world. Lighter, thinner and more beautiful than ever before. When you wear beautiful things, you want to exert that beauty in all that you do. That’s what I hope for each girl who wears my designs to feel and be beautiful. I want to bring Mesh to the masses.”

The Maui Thing shop on Market Street has been shaping local Wailuku style in a big way with fashion shows, second Saturday keiki art events and First Friday activities. Designer Ashley Leahey credits their graphic island knit looks to the “good things” on Maui. She says the fauna and florals of Maui influence their designs, as do the people, local businesses, culture, food, stories and myths. Their iconic Shell Poncho, Ua Mau tanks, Wailuku Bridge and Stuck on Good tees can be spotted island-wide and make great gifts. For year number eight on Market Street, Maui Thing plans to freshen up the store interior and bring in some solid dress designs of their own. MauiThing.com.

“The Maui Thing girl is empowered,” says Leahey. “She earns her keep and doesn’t rely on getting things the easy way. She thrives on challenges. She’s an independent thinker. As a leader of integrity, she listens and is always respectful. She’s resilient; when things go bad, she’ll bounce back and learn from it, always turning a negative into a positive. She’s thoughtful, though, strong and independent. She’s extremely conscious and considerate of those around her and how she affects others.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more culture, visit: mauitime.com/culture

MT: Great, I have a question about snorkeling: Turtle or shark, which would you rather see in the wild? BS: I’d rather be the hammer than the nail. You know the shark is going to eat the turtle. I’m probably more of a shark kind of a person.

Bob Saget plays Maui this Sunday

MT: Okay, perfect lead into my next question. BS: Where do I draw the bar on age?

C

omedian Bob Saget will perform (along with crooner Brian Evans) this Sunday at the Sheraton Resort in Kaanapali as part of the new Maui Celebrity Series. We spoke with Saget a few days before the show, and it turns out the star of Full House and America’s Funniest Home Videos is a really nice guy. Funny, too.

MAUITIME: Thanks for speaking with us. Have you been to Maui before? BOB SAGET: Many, many times. I was there a couple of ex-girlfriends ago. I have friends there. Years ago, my ex-wife and I hiked through the crater. I think that we were divorced by the time we got out of it, it was such a long hike. MT: I haven’t done the crater yet. BS: We went up with this guy, Ken, with a company I probably shouldn’t promote, but he told us that the Pleidians were sending rays from another planet in the center of the crater. MT: Yes, that happens during the spring. BS: And I’m off sugar, so, I mean, I can admire the fields. I’m there for such a short time, I’m just going to try to enjoy it. I’d like to learn how to hula–maybe I can meet someone that can teach me. MT: So what came first: Danny from Full House or the dirty jokes? BS: Well, I was raised on dirty jokes. I was 17 when I started doing stand-up: I won a radio contest and that was singing songs. And the songs by a 17-year-old were about bondage. One song was called “Bondage” and the other was “She’s a Man.” MT: So I missed Full House. I was kind of a bad teenager. But I do remember watching America’s Funniest Home Videos. BS: No, you were normal. I wouldn’t have watched it. America’s Funniest Home Videos was the boys’ show, Full House was the girls’ show–that was frankly how it rolled out. They would call it “The Michelle Show.” The video show was a nine-year-old boy’s fantasy–it was just people getting hit in the nuts. MT: Will you surf while you’re are out here? BS: No, I do not surf. I’ve had two knee surgeries. I like to sail, but not sure there’ll be

MT: Have you ever ruffied a woman? BS: I haven’t. In fact, years ago in the ‘80s, when I was working at some club in Cleveland... This story may be a little bit too open of a story. Someone gave them to me to use on someone, some girl. To give to someone, to take with her. So actually, this girl was trying to hit on me, so I took a lude myself and knocked myself out. I ruffied myself. I’m not a person that would make a forward move to medicate them to get what I want. MT: Comedy seems a bit different these days. I’m noticing quite a push to curtail heckling. BS: Yeah, heckling is not good. You know, wherever I go, if someone is disruptive to the show, I ask them to leave. I don’t play gigs anymore where they do not remove the person. My audiences tend to be young, and it’s really nice. I have every demo–like, if I was in the market. I can get the mom, the grandmother and the legal granddaughter. It’s lovely. It’s a very confusing Thanksgiving to be invited to. MT: Where do you sit? BS: I don’t, know, well that depends… That’s a dirty joke you just wrote. MT: We’ve lost some great comedians lately, You’ve been close with some of them. How is comedy changing? BS: Every time you hear a new song, you ask yourself, how is someone new? How do you reinvent something that is already perfect. Like music, it’s the same as comedy. I mean, look at what Amy Schumer is doing. She’s be a friend for a long time. She’s deserving of what she’s doing. She’s just funny. And that’s the key to it. I go to dinner with Don Rickles. Is this person funny? Is that person? He knows what funny is. And I know what funny is. 'Black Mass' Whitey Bulger crime biopic is absorbing but a little stiff ★★★★★ Rated R / 122 Min.

W

hitey Bulger was a very bad man. After serving time in Alcatraz, Bulger spent the 1970s and 1980s as a career criminal, serial murderer and the head of Boston’s Winter Hill Gang. He was also an FBI informant and, stranger still, surrounded by neighbors who declared that he was “a great guy.” Director Scott Cooper once again builds a character-driven drama, in which a rough, crime-stained background infects the current, troubled lives of the protagonists. Bulger, in a welcome change of pace, is played by Johnny Depp, who exudes a volcanic intensity by investing his energies into a role that isn’t remotely comical or quirky. Rather than aim to create an epic statement about the mafia or attempt to recreate the glories of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, Cooper shapes this as street-wise tale of turf war. Bulger isn’t Don Corleone or even Donnie Brasco but the most immediate theme on hand pulls us in: Bulger is a monster, possibly even the devil, but he can be disarmingly kind

to people in his inner circle. Despite his reputation, people love him. Rather than duplicate the family dynamic of many gangster tales, Cooper portrays Bulger as a walking embodiment of evil as an accepted, out-in-the-open entity. Depp is unsettling in a role that’s among his best, entirely different from his recent, more mainstream (if no less offbeat) turns. Here, his ghoulish appearance makes a strong first impression and Depp ably uses the makeup to generate fear and unease. Gradually, he internalizes the darkness festering within Bulger. As a key figure who enables Bulger’s despicable behavior, Joel Edgerton conveys his character’s bravado, though he never makes the role as sympathetic as he should be. There’s a tragic quality to the character that doesn’t come across. The film is at its best during the tense confrontations between Depp and his co-stars. Dakota Johnson nicely plays Bulger’s wife and has two great scenes with Depp. Unfortunately, after making a strong impression, she vanishes from the movie. Julianne Nicholson, playing Edgerton’s spouse, has the scariest scene, in which Bulger talks his way into her bedroom and offers veiled threats. Benedict Cumberbatch is fine as Bulger’s brother, but

Is it just me or was Whitey Bulger a dead ringer for Hunter S. Thompson?

whatever accent he’s trying to pull off is a mystery. Unlike his awkward turn in AntMan, Corey Stoll registers strongly as a voice of reason within the FBI. Kevin Bacon, as Edgerton’s superior, is typically first-rate. This is better and less formulaic than Cooper’s Out of the Furnace, but it lacks the contained greatness of his Crazy Heart. The violence is appropriately off-putting, though that doesn’t mean this is an easy film to watch. Black Mass is absorbing but a little stiff. Nearly two and a half hours long but boasting a great ensemble cast, there’s a lot here–but it’s also not enough. This is a cold film with plot and character developments that feel disjointed (or cut down in the editing room). Bulg-

er is fascinating, but he’s not a colorful, enjoyable villain. He’s a vile, unhinged monster–something like a hungry rattlesnake devouring a kitten. Depp never winks at the audience or allows an apology to slip into his committed characterization. Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of a fictionalized version of Bulger in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed was also shocking and cruel but flavored with humor. Depp’s gives an unflinching, full-bodied portrait of a hideous character. While there’s no detectable trace of his characteristic whimsy, there is brilliance in his work. Black Mass overall is not a bull’s eye, but the story maintains its morbid fascination and Depp, as always, is something to see. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Anyone who drives around blasting music at ridiculous decibel levels is an idiot. How presumptuous and obnoxious! It’s not like they’re trying to expose us to some fantastic music—it’s so loud it’s distorted; all you can hear is the bone-shaking bass. The good news: None of these losers is a Libra. The bad news: When you’re forced to deal with this kind of asshole this week, you won’t be able to slap some sense into him. Whether it’s your sister’s new boyfriend or your landlord’s kid, it’s just not going to be politic to give him a piece of your mind—so please don’t try. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Do you ever stop to think about the many little miracles you take for granted? How amazing is it that you can use a little chunk of plastic in your hand and talk to and see, instantly, your buddy in New Zealand? Technological progress is one tangible thing we can point to that changes the repeating themes of human history from a circle to a spiral, both on a grand scale and a very personal one. Things you wouldn’t have conceived of as possible ten years ago—like a long-distance relationship, for one obvious example—are now much more of a reality. Don’t rule them out as a matter of course.

is reluctant for similar reasons, you might want to actually consider cleaning up some of the mess. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

By now every smart Taurus has learned the lesson of backing up your data in at least two or three different places. Otherwise, all it takes is one hard drive crash and you’re screwed. Naturally, life isn’t so simple. If you crash a relationship, you can’t take it back to the last stable spot and reboot it from there, avoiding the mistakes the second time around which caused the crash during the first run. You get one shot; second chances aren’t the same as a fresh start—they’re too colored by the screw-ups that came before. Keep that in mind— before you make a mistake you can’t take back. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

What is identity? I look on my former selves like my 5 year-old self or my 19 year-old self, and they seem like different people to who I am now. I’m more similar to people I meet than I am to those former incarnations, with whom I share only memories, not taste in music, attitudes, or aspirations. You’ve changed even more than I have; you’re one of the most dynamic people I know. So why let yourself feel so limited because of who you were? Yeah, your teenage self might not have been up to what you’re dreaming of. Even the person you were yesterday might not be capable of it. But the person you are todayis capable—if you don’t get stuck on all the yous that weren’t.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

There it is, that dream you had, perfectly preserved in amber. Nothing about it’s changed; it hasn’t deteriorated one bit—but it hasn’t improved or evolved, either. It’s effectively dead. You can admire it, long for it, display it proudly or with shame, but you can’t resurrect it. That particular goal is forever beyond you now. This week, however, your life vaguely resembles Jurassic Park. You can salvage something from this extinct idea, a bit of mental DNA. Mix it with some of the new stuff you’ve been brewing and you might actually have something good, something viable. Something alive and ready to grow.

ANSWERS

...to questions from page 4

I’m a big fan of self-belief, just like you. The only way to achieve something grand—even absurdly, improbably grand—is to believe it to be possible. To decide that it’s unattainable is to give up before you’ve begun. I’m not preaching to you. I mean, you practically taught this to me. But your job’s not done. Someone else desperately needs to learn how to properly dream. They’re writing off their highest hopes as unachievable fantasy—which of course makes it so. You and I know it doesn’t need to be like that. Convince them of the same, would you?

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

I think the best human solutions are those that take into account the incredible diversity of human experience. Binary answers to complicated problems are just too plain simplistic to really work. In the shortterm, they might seem more dramatic or effective, but in the end they’re simply not viable. How do you make room, especially when you’re dealing with a group, for the more complex (and less “perfect” and appealing) solutions that are actually required? That’s the question that you’ve got to answer this week, and I’m useless; I don’t know, either. What I do know is this: If you don’t figure out a way, no one will, and we’ll all be stuck with the devastating end result.

QUIZ understood

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Old-school alchemists pursued the elixir of life because they believed it possible. They simply didn’t know how much they didn’t know. Please don’t be offended if I suggest you’re in a similar position. At least one of your aspirations is as absurd as creating a potion of eternal youth, even if it doesn’t look that way from where you’re standing. You’ll see. I mention it not so you stop pursuing it, but so you won’t be so disappointed when it’s proven impossible that you fail to notice all the cool shit you discovered and accomplished along the way.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

You purport to prefer everything clean, categorized, and coordinated, but the truth is you’re obsessed with mystery. You organize the boring shit so you can devote more attention and energy to the fascinating people and things that don’t fit into any box—the ones you can actually learn something from. Unfortunately, your chaos-clearing impulses have gotten out of hand; the reason you’re bored is because mystery has moved out. It’s tricky to allow the unknown back into your life once you’ve swept it out. You can’t just clear out a closet and say, “Look, fly in here. I’ve made some space.” You’ve actually got to open all the windows and doors and then close your eyes. Let it happen. Smile. This’ll be fun. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

If I weren’t such a slob, I’d sweep my apartment every day; because of my eternally shedding hound, that’s how often it needs it. But I live with dog hair because I don’t give a shit. You get that, don’t you? After all, you live with loads of stuff that’s less than convenient, because it’s easier than eradicating it from your life. Your laidback attitude isn’t shared by everyone you meet, however. For instance, most neat-freaks wouldn’t want to live with me because I’m so lax about the dog hair. I don’t mind, but you might—since the person you want to step in the door

You loathe having your loyalty questioned. You’d do anything for those you love which is why it’s so irksome when someone asks you to prove it. If someone were drowning in icy water you’d jump in to save them. But this theoretical posturing—where you’d have to prove you’d jump in, without actually being in that situation—is almost impossible to deal with. You’ve been torturing yourself over it, haven’t you? It’s just not worth it, my dear. Either they have faith in you or they don’t. Go ahead and save them when they need it. But until then, don’t bother trying to convince them you would. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

There’s no need to reinvent the wheel here. You’re trying to riff on something that’s been done a million times; don’t waste your time starting from scratch and making unnecessary mistakes that have already been resolved. In the past this approach has occasionally taught you something new that no one’s noticed before—thanks to your unique way of looking at the world—but this time that’s just plain unlikely. There’s something to be achieved here, but only by building on the work that’s already been done, not redoing it yourself. You’re the gorgeous delicious cherry on top of the cake; jump right to that, and don’t waste time grinding the flour. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
