lying atoll islands, and especially at higher sea levels forecasted for the future due to climate change,” states the news release. This comes from a new study in the journal Nature (titled “Many Atolls May be Uninhabitable Within Decades Due to Climate Change”) from three researchers: Curt D. Storlazzi, Edwin P. L. Elias and Paul Berkowitz, who based their models on the atolls that make up the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. And make no mistake–this is more bad news, on top of the already rotten climate news most of us have grown accustomed to for the past couple of decades. “Observations show global sea level is rising due to climate change, with the highest rates in the tropical Pacific Ocean where many of the world’s low-lying atolls are located,” states the news release. “Sea

level rise, causing twice as much land forecast to be flooded for a given future sea level than currently predicted by models that do not take wave-driven water levels into account.” The result–the complete destruction of habitation–is a forgone conclusion. And it will come sooner rather than later. “Many atoll islands will be flooded annually, contaminating the limited freshwater resources with saltwater, and likely forcing inhabitants to abandon their islands in decades, not centuries, as previously thought,” said Storlazzi in the news release. The study’s abstract sums it all up in clear (though a bit repetitive) terms: “Observations show global sea level is rising due to climate change, with the highest rates in the tropical Pacific Ocean where many of the world’s low-lying atolls are located,” states the abstract. “Sea-level rise is

Reason #739 that the Mainland U.S. is Lame and Maui is No Ka Oi: we make otherwise clear reporting on police misconduct into a fun game for all ages (well, except for babies who can’t read and people who always vote for Ralph Nader–they’re never any fun). Normally we only get to play a couple times a year, but lately it seems that we’ve been playing once a week. Our latest chance came this weekend with a rare double-header. First up was the Oct. 2 Maui News story “Police department internal investigations lead to 5 suspensions.” Now on the Mainland, a story like this would probably include little details like the names of police officers who were busted for wrong-doing and maybe some clues here are there about the exact nature of their transgressions. But not here! On Maui, that would be too easy–it’s all about making people guess about the cops sworn to serve and protect. “An officer was suspended for three days after a motor vehicle collision in August 2014,” reported The Maui News (which also plays the game by not running a byline on stories like these, forcing the reader to try to figure out which staffer might have written it). “The officer responded in an unauthorized emergency mode, failed to yield and caused a collision with another vehicle, police said. Another three-day suspension was ordered for an officer who failed to properly complete numerous reports on time in March 2014. A two-day suspension was ordered for an officer who failed to properly evaluate a subordinate and slept on duty in September 2014.” Unauthorized emergency mode! Failure to complete reports! Sleeping duty! Man, the Maui Police Department sounds like a great place to work. And which stillactive Maui Police Officers did all these things is a big mystery that we, the taxpaying public, gets to figure out because, as The Maui News always says, “The names of the officers were not made public.” But I digress. See, unlike every other government agency in the State of Hawaii, police departments are exempt from having to tell the public the names of employees busted for misconduct. Where’s the fun in that?

And even when a Maui Police Officer actually commits a crime–making the misconduct a true matter of public record–the MPD still wants to make it a game. Like they did with their Oct. 2 press release. “On 10/01/15, at approximately 6:38 p.m., Anthony Maldonado (26) of Makawao was placed under arrest for the offense of Theft in the Second Degree,” stated the news release. “Maldonado has been a sworn police officer with the Maui Police Department with just under five years of service. He was released pending further investigation. In addition, an Administrative Investigation was initiated and the[n] he was placed on leave.” Now that’s it–the whole press release (minus the smiling mug of his booking photo, of course). If you’re like, I don’t know, a normal person, then you probably read that and said something like, “Damn, that’s messed up. What did he [allegedly] steal?” Who knows? Who cares? I asked the MPD that very question, but they haven’t said yet. I hope they don’t, because then it will ruin the game. See, we have to guess what he took, and that’s fun! Well, it’s more fun than thinking about the Maui cops who’ve been given guns and badges that authorize them to use those guns on us who then turn around and do things like allegedly drive while drunk (Officer Rachel Garvin), flash pedestrians (Officer John Salomon) and steal things (Officer Anthony Maldonado).

SAY GOODBYE TO ATOLLS Here’s more lousy news on the climate change front (you Republicans out there can just hum softly through this or go make yourselves sandwiches or something). According to an Oct. 1 news release from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the half a million people living on atolls around the world are screwed. “A new study shows that the combined effect of storm-induced wave-driven flooding and sea level rise on island atolls may be more severe and happen sooner than previous estimates of inundation predicted by passive ‘bathtub’ modeling for low-

level rise is particularly critical for lowlying coral reef-lined atoll islands; these islands have limited land and water available for human habitation, limited food sources and ecosystems that are vulnerable to inundation from sea level rise. Sea level rise will result in larger waves and higher wave-driven water levels along atoll islands’ shorelines than at present. The reason it’ll get so bad is because “waves will synergistically interact with sea

particularly critical for low-lying carbonate reef-lined atoll islands; these islands have limited land and water available for human habitation, water and food sources, and ecosystems that are vulnerable to inundation from sea-level rise. Here we demonstrate that sea-level rise will result in larger waves and higher wave-driven water levels along atoll islands’ shorelines than at present. Numerical model results reveal waves will synergistically interact with sea-level rise, causing twice as much land forecast to be flooded for a given value of sea-level rise than currently predicted by current models that do not take wave-driven water levels into account. Atolls with islands close to the shallow reef crest are more likely to be subjected to greater waveinduced run-up and flooding due to sea-level rise than those with deeper reef crests farther from the islands’ shorelines. It appears that many atoll islands will be flooded annually, salinizing the limited freshwater resources and thus likely forcing inhabitants to abandon their islands in decades, not centuries, as previously thought.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

The Travaasa Hana resort has appointed Sharon Jahns as its director of food and beverage and chef Jason “Jay” Johnson as executive chef. “We are very excited for Sharon and Jay to lead our culinary team into the next chapter,” said David MacIlwraith, general manager of Travaasa Hana. “We’re looking forward to enhancing our culinary offerings and increasing our support of the local ranchers, fishermen and farmers in Hana.” Jahns, who will oversee all food and beverage outlets for Travaasa Hana, most recently worked at Joe’s Bar and Grill in Wailea, where she served as general manager for the past 15 years. Prior to that, Jahns was general manager at Sam Choy’s in Lahaina. Johnson most recently served as executive chef of the Volcano House Hotel on the Big Island. Johnson has more than 20 years of culinary experience in Hawaii Island restaurants and hotels, including stints at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Waikoloa Country Club Restaurant, Roy’s Bar and Grill, Uncle Billy’s Hilo Bay Restaurant, Fisherman’s Landing, and his own restaurants, Jay’s Island Tapas and Jay’s Cuisine. Here we go again. Television’s fetishization of hunting in Hawaii–begun with great controversy two years ago with the History Channel’s reality show American Jungle–is now continuing with a new Discovery Channel show titled Pacific Warriors. “For centuries, generations of Hawaiians have caught these monster fish from small, hand-made canoes, using nothing more than a fishing pole and their bare hands,” states a Sept. 28 Discovery Channel press release. “Now, a rare breed of men and women– armed with just a sea kayak–are re-inventing this ancient art, and risking their lives to catch 100-plus pound fish. One fresh catch can reel in $1,500 dollars or more; but big rewards bring stiff competition.” Big rewards, sure, but also a certain amount of danger–which the show press release almost drools over. “Though these men and women survive and thrive by living off the ocean, kayak fishing is not for the faint of heart; even the slightest mistake can invite deadly consequences,” states the press release. “The series follows seven teams as they train and battle it out on the rough waters. Using primitive means, the fearless fishermen and women are regularly taken on what they call ‘Hawaiian Sleigh Rides,’ which occur when they hook monster fish that drag them out to sea–sometimes as much as 10 miles or more. They also fend off sharks regularly, deeming them “tax men,” which are looking for an easy meal.” The dangers involved are no joke. In December 2013, a shark killed a tourist from Stevenson, Washington who was kayak fishing off Makena. Patrick Briney, 57, had been dangling his feet in the water while fishing when a shark bit him, taking off the foot and tearing a gash in his leg. Briney died before his friend in a nearby kayak could get him to shore, according to a Dec.

3, 2013 The Daily News Online story. It’ll be interesting to see if Pacific Warriors avoids the controversy that plagued the old American Jungle series. That show drew the ire of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) in 2013. “The values of the show are completely opposite of what hunters in Hawaii do,” said then-DLNR Chairman William Aila in a Nov. 29, 2013 KITV report. “There are values of respect and sharing. Not what is portrayed

Rysher Belen's 1st prize entry

in this so-called reality show… We’re already getting calls from out of state hunters wanting to know how they can come to Hawaii and hunt at night. We have to tell them it’s illegal to hunt at night in Hawaii.” Pacific Warriors premieres Friday, Oct. 23 on the Discovery Channel. -Anthony Pignataro

NENE AWARENESS LOGO CONTEST WINNERS Haleakala National Park recently displayed student artwork from its Nene Awareness Day Logo Contest. Rysher Belen from Maui Waena Intermediate School placed first with his piece titled “Nene The State Bird of Hawaii.” Kirk Seitz, also from Maui Waena, won second place with his artwork “Malama Aina Kokua Nene.” Maui Waena’s Maya Hickman won third place for “Pick Up Your Litter” (Maui Waena was the only school participating in the contest). Each student will receive prizes provided by Hawaii Pacific Parks Association, a nonprofit partner of Haleakala National Park. All submitted artwork was displayed at the Haleakala Visitor Center on Sept. 26, which was Nene Awareness Day. The winning entries will also be posted on the park’s Facebook page. -Suzanne Kayian

‘one-stop-shop’ that lists agency profiles and current volunteer needs,” states a Sept. 29 news release from the County of Maui. “The system also allows users to create a free membership and to browse and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Opportunities listed by 86 partner agencies currently offer more than 200 volunteer opportunities; these include becoming a museum docent, feeding the homebound elderly, event volunteers, social media curator, beach clean ups, and more.” According to the news release, Islands Hospice has already used the Get Connected system to great effect. “Many people in our community want to get involved and contribute to a worthwhile cause, but oftentimes we don’t know where to volunteer our time or how to get started,” said Michelle Bowerman, Islands Hospice Director of Business Operations, in the Sept. 29 news release. “This is where Get Connected is so valuable, as it connects those who want to help with the agencies that need the help. The result is absolutely priceless in terms of serving the community.” For more information, go to Handsonmaui.com or call Wendy Stebbins, Volunteer Center Coordinator at 808-276-7733. -Anthony Pignataro ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

THE CONTINUING CRISIS “Let me get this straight,” wrote an incredulous commenter in September. “[T] hose who oversee” the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, Michigan, have the park “populated with snakes that can bite and inflict serious wounds.” The remark was in response to a visitor’s having been bitten by one of at least 27 rattlesnakes loose (by design) on the grounds. (The Eastern Massasauga rattler is protected by state law.) On the other hand, the park has posted many snake warning signs, and the woman who was bitten had removed her shoes to walk in the lush grass.

One of the remaining 116 Guantanamo Bay prisoners (a man suspected of having been close to Osama bin Laden) has a dating profile on Match.com captioned “detained but ready to mingle,” the man’s lawyer Carlos Warner told Al Jazeera America in September. Muhammad Rahim al-Afghani has relentlessly proclaimed his innocence, and Warner released a series of charming letters from his client intended to humanize him. Al-Afghani commented on Lebron James, Caitlyn Jenner, the Ashley Madison website and, for some reason, South Dakota, but with the recent publicity, Match.com appears to have suspended the account.

City officials in Tarpon Springs, Florida, scrambled in May to find an ordinance that artist Piotr Janowski might have violated when he covered two palm trees, and then three sides of his rented home, in heavyduty aluminum foil, to the consternation of neighbors. Janowski is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his work has been shown in that city’s Polish Museum of America. And National Forest Service officials announced success in fire retardation in August by protectively sealing a remote structure near an Idaho wildfire in multi-ply foil. And then there is Arthur Brown, 78, also “successful” in having kept his house in Hermitage,

Pennsylvania, free of “aliens” by sealing it in foil (although neighbors griped in September about falling property values).

LATEST SELF-DECLARED RIGHT Officials in Carroll County, Maryland, finally released a woman in August after she had been detained for 67 days–just for declining to give her name to a traffic patrolman (who had stopped her for a broken taillight). In her idiosyncratic understanding of the U.S. Constitution’s Fifth Amendment, to “not be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against (herself)” means keeping her identity hidden from police. Eventually, sheriff’s deputies captured her fingerprints, and since they matched no outstanding warrants, she was released.

WINNING An international property rental service recently found a seven-bedroom castle on 200 acres in Ringuette, France, for the equivalent of $2,925 a month–which San Francisco’s KNTV immediately contrasted with the listing of a 401-square-foot apartment in the city’s Lower Haight district, offered at $3,000 per month. Another French castle (six bedrooms, a pool, three-acre garden, “several lawns”) rents for the equivalent of $4,940–about what a three-bedroom on Collins Street in San Francisco goes for.

MORE WINNING Marie Holmes tearfully disclosed in March how the $88 million Powerball lump sum she had won would allow her to finish college and help her four kids (one with cerebral palsy). Right away, though, her boyfriend, Lamar “Hot Sauce” McDow, was charged with drug trafficking and needed $3 million bail, which she took care of. Then, in August, in Brunswick County, North Carolina, “Hot Sauce” was arrested again, for selling heroin, and reporters surmised that Holmes must have been the one who posted that $6 million bail. Holmes addressed her critics on Facebook: “What Y’all need to be worried about is Y’all money…” ■

BAD BOY

BRINGS BUREAUCRACY REMEMBER THIS GUY? HE’S THE REASON THE COUNTY OF MAUI NOW WANTS TO TEACH US ALL ALOHA. BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

W

e’ve all the seen the video. Posted on YouTube on Feb. 16, 2014, it showed a young local man repeatedly cursing some white people at Kalama Beach Park in Kihei, all why they record him with their smart phone. It all started when one of the people spoke up after seeing a local guy–apparently not the guy in the video–throw something at a nearby dog. “This is Hawaii, we do whatever we fucking want out here, abuse dogs, hit women, that’s all we do,” the guy on the video says. He then curses them, and white people in general, for one minute and 37 seconds, every now and then throwing in a (true) line about how white people stole Hawaii from those who were here first. It’s appalling, ridiculous, ghastly and even a little funny, and for all those reasons instantly went viral after MauiWatch posted it online. To date, it’s gotten more than 420,000 views–a respectable number, sure, but it’s no Gangnam Style (2.4 billion views and climbing). Honestly, I’d long forgotten about the Kalama Park video. Every place has troublemakers, and one of Maui’s happened to get recorded saying things that ran counter to the “aloha spirit” that most people around the world associate with Hawaii. But I was reminded of the nearly twoyear-old video during a recent chat with two public officials about the new Maui County Office of the Hospitality Industry Advocate (OHIA) they’re setting up. Reminded, because they kept bringing it up. “That Kalama Park video–that’s not who we are,” said David Ching, who works as

12 OCTOBER 8, 2015

the county’s First Assistant to the Managing Director and is in charge of the new office, on Sept. 2. “Maybe we need to be reminded of it.” But I’m getting ahead of myself. There are a few things I should explain first. To begin with, OHIA is still very much in its infant stages, and right now just consists of Ching and fellow county official Ipo Mossman. In fact, it shouldn’t even really be called an office. “Right now it’s a project,” Ching told me. “We only use ‘office’ because it fits ‘OHIA.’” Secondly, the existence of OHIA owes itself to a statistic Ching told me at the beginning of our talk. “Are you aware that the hospitality industry is the largest single economic driver we have?” Ching asked me. “It’s 40 percent of our economy. We’re the most dependent county on hospitality in the state. Nearly one in every two jobs is dependent on the industry. It’s scary if you consider what happens if the industry goes south. It would impact massive numbers of people in the county.” And yes, while we already have a Maui Visitors Bureau (funded to the tune of $3.5 million in county tax dollars each year), Ching says OHIA will provide the county with information and assistance it doesn’t currently get from the MVB. “We took at look at what government is doing right now to support the hospitality industry,” Ching said. “We support the MVB, but what are we doing? How is it working? What we’re paying them to do is market Maui County. But we don’t really have a central coordinating agency for this industry. Before things get out of hand and

we turn into another Waikiki, we have to find out what’s going on with the needs of the community and the needs of the industry. Are they healthy or are they clashing? It’s really important for the county to balance it out before it becomes a problem.” As an example, County Communications Director Rod Antone told me that it’s come to the county’s attention that various hotels are apparently telling visitors that they can kill time before their flights home by hanging out at Kanaha Beach Park–an area heavily used by kite and wind surfers (who don’t always get along) that also has a considerable homeless population living in the brush. But Ching and Mossman want to go much further than merely coordinate information between hotels and county officials. They’ve also produced a three-point “Strategic Action Chart” outlining what they want to do. They’ve shown it to various individuals in the community to solicit input and suggestions, but it hasn’t been formally made public. One of those individuals, Maui

Tomorrow Executive Director Albert Perez, took away very strong feelings after his meeting with Ching and Mossman. “I was pleased they invited us,” he said (Dick Mayer accompanied him). But as far as what OHIA wants to do, Perez summed it up this way: “They want more international flights, improved infrastructure for visitors and they want to teach people on Maui to have more aloha.” Perez called it all “pretty appalling.” Let’s examine each of the three facets of the OHIA strategic plan in greater detail:

INFRASTRUCTURE GOAL First, here’s the county’s jargon on what it wants to do: “Create a coordinated visitor industry support organization facilitated by the County OHIA program that will ensure suitable infrastructure or infrastructure initiatives are in place to facilitate a world class visitor experience that is balanced with the non-financial needs of our community by 2019.” Once you strip out the buzzwords and

cliches, what you get is pretty close to Perez’s summation. You also get evidence that Ching and Mossman are listening to criticism–Perez says the last dozen words of the above statement about the community’s “non-financial needs” were added after he and Mayer met with OHIA. Again, Antone offered a specific example of what OHIA might recommend: “We may have to put up signs in a foreign language,” he said. “Waikiki is very Japanesefriendly. Is that something we need to look at? We have to figure out how the visitor industry impacts our infrastructure, our emergency services–like when we pick up 14 people from Bamboo Trail.” As far as the county’s roads, services and accommodations are concerned, Ching said they’re already pretty maxed out. That becomes very apparent when we look at the second part of the OHIA plan.

TRAVEL TO MAUI GOAL Put simply, OHIA wants to bring more visitors from Asia (especially Japan,

China, Korea and Australia) to Maui. “At least 67,500” more visitors each year by 2017, to be exact. The reason for wanting more tourists from Asia is simple: most of Maui County’s visitors today come from Canada and the Mainland U.S. Any hiccup in air travel from those two areas and the county is in big trouble. I asked Ching where he got such a specific number for the visitor increase. “That represents one flight per day,” he said. “We did a small study, and that would have $70-100 million impact to the community in terms of revenue.” At this point, that’s all the visitor growth OHIA wants. That’s because the county apparently can’t handle anything more. “Our infrastructure is very limited,” Mossman said. “If we have one flight, that’s what we can handle. The fear that we’ll be inundated with all these flights–we don’t have the infrastructure for that. We’d be lucky to take one flight a day. The infrastructure really can’t take much more.” Continued on page 14

In the late 1980s, the state tried to lengthen the runways at Kahului Airport so it could accommodate international flights. Opposition killed the plan, but these days the airport can accept direct international flights with its existing concrete. “We already have international flights to Kahului Airport from Canada,” said Ching. “They use pre-clearance airports.” Those airports, which largely exist in Canada, include their own U.S. Customs offices. That means travelers go through customs before they board, allowing them to enter Kahului Airport like any passenger coming from the Mainland U.S. According to Ching, Narita Airport in Japan may soon take on pre-clearance status. “That market is coming,” he said. “We want to be prepared.” For Perez, opening up Kahului Airport to more international flights is asking for trouble. “Little fire ants have gotten out of control,” he said. “They’ve already devastated large parts of Tahiti–people have abandoned some of their ancestral lands. No one seems to be thinking of the economic impact from invasive species. Brown tree snakes can come here in a plane’s wheel well. If brown tree snakes get here, it will cost us tens of millions of dollars annually. The Maui Invasive Species Committee [MISC] does one interception of LFA per week. Who knows what they’re not intercepting? The little fire ants even go onto the beach, the sand. They’re tiny, but their bite leaves a welt that could last a week.” Ching says invasive species are already a concern and more international flights won’t change much. “We do have invasive species inspection areas,” he said. “There are risks with flights from anywhere. Other than what we’re doing right now, I don’t really have an answer.” The day after I spoke to Ching, The Maui News reported that the island’s invasive species inspectors were “shortstaffed”–down to about eight from a high of 17 in 2009, with four or five positions vacant “for several years.”

The last part of the OHIA plan is the most complex–and potentially the most controversial. It’s what Ching and I were talking about when he brought up the 2014 Kalama Park video. The goal is to “Improve perception of Aloha Spirit by implementing and supporting customer service improvements using the Hawaiian Culture and improve the on island (on County) visitor experience,” according to the OHIA strategic action chart. This is, straight up, teaching the island to be nicer to tourists. “We need to get some education out there,” Ching said. “A new understanding of the host culture, what Aloha Spirit is all about. Hawaiians gave the world celestial navigation and the Aloha Spirit. Aloha is a positive thing–ask anyone in the world.” According to Ching and Mossman, OHIA would start with the county government itself. “Say the county decides that all its employees should know about Ho‘oponopono [an ancient Hawaiian problem-solving process involving forgiveness] and act that way. We would then educate everyone. We’re hoping that education

would tell people how to act towards each other, to the community. The county has 2,500 employees–if they can go home and impress it on their families, that’s a start.” Mossman added that officials in Kauai County and Hawaii County are already doing similar training programs for their employees. “We’d probably do a whole series on the Aloha Spirit,” said Ching. “Ipo and I are both part Hawaiian, and this is an issue for the entire community. We gotta live it, and it’s kind of defeating when we think about where it’s at now.” Ching and Mossman have their hearts in the right place, but this call for more aloha spirit reminded me of what Dr. Sidney Lehua Iaukea wrote in her 2014 book Keka‘a: The Making And Saving of North Beach West Maui. One of her earliest jobs was as a server at the Sheraton Resort in Kaanapali, and it required her to take “How to be Aloha” classes. “I was deeply disturbed by these experiences, but not able to adequately formalize or articulate the problem,” she wrote. “It would be many years before I could put into words the discomfort I felt for being treated like a servant, and told to do so with a smile on my face and aloha in my heart. I have been critical of the tourism industry ever since.” Which brings us back to the 2014 video of the local guy in Kalama Park. Yes, the video shows an angry guy spouting racism. But it also shows true societal troubles. Maui is very much a bifurcated island–wealthy (or at least well-off) tourists fly here while people born here serve them mac salad and kalua pork and clean their hotel toilets. All the old promises of weaning Maui away from tourism and bringing higher-paying tech jobs and careers have, over the last four decades, produced minimal results. We’re still very much a county that mostly makes it living by catering to tourists. Given the relatively low wages these jobs carry, combined with the way in which a white-led coup toppled the Hawaiian Kingdom and then integrated the new “Republic of Hawaii” into the United States, the anger exhibited by that young man in Kalama Park becomes understandable (though his actions are by no means excusable). It’s funny–his fullthroated ranting and raging seem almost like a cry for race war, but in the end his actions merely spurred the creation of just another layer of county bureaucracy. “We’re having three families to a house, sewage overflowing from injection wells is destroying our reefs,” Perez told me. “So many things would be improved if we focused on the quality of life of our residents. Then we wouldn’t have to teach residents about aloha.”

OHIA doesn’t yet have a website or actual office, but Ching and Mossman said they’re interested in what the public has to say. If you have questions, comments or ideas, please email them to David.Ching@co.maui.hi.us and/or Ipo.Mossman@ co.maui.hi.us. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

hen Derek Braun moved to Maui from Oregon, he really missed the great microbreweries he’d left behind in the Pacific Northwest. So he decided to open his own tap house to satisfy that thirst. It’s aptly called What Ales You, and is located in the Kihei Kalama Village. “We’ve created a different feel in this space here,” says Braun. “It definitely has a Pacific Northwest vibe. It’s nice that we get a lot of industry people from Monkeypod, Wailea and the resorts. I’ve had people say, ‘I’ve been coming here for five years and we needed a spot like this. We’re so glad you’ve created this place.’” What Ales You went into the former Pita Paradise spot. Braun completely redesigned the space, turning it into an air conditioned tap room with a big chalkboard menu above the beer taps, televisions and art. There are dark wood accents juxtaposed with industrial corrugated panels. The outside deck has been transformed into an ultra hip lounge with red cushy seats, plants and low tables. “We have WiFi, NBA, NHL Channel and all the sports channels,” says Braun. “We don’t think of ourselves as a sports bar but we want to invite anyone who wants to watch sports. These guests right here are from Canada, and they asked if they could watch the opening night of a Calgary game. We totally welcome that.” While some visitors may drop in for games, most customers just want to check out the 16 beers and ciders on tap, or the great wine list. Braun credits What Ales You manager Windy Baldwin (who’s also his girlfriend) for the wine list and smooth operations. But Braun’s attention to detail on the beer–he’s fine-tuned each tap to the optimum temperature–is the results of eight weeks of tap house study in Eugene, Oregon. He also

installed a “direct draw” system that insures perfect temperatures with shorter lines. The menu is the product of two chefs: Jonathan Porter and Jason Giarola. Everything they produced is a perfect pairing to beer and wine. A selection of organic, nitrate-free wursts are boiled in beer, then grilled to snap. You can have them served with your choice of toppings and sauces, including Life Foods condiments, as a sandwich or pupu style. The spinach salad and caprese are made fresh, and can be served with a brat. The pupu platters are elegant, giving you choices of gourmet cheese and fruits or hummus and crudités, all served on a wooden board. On Tuesdays, they switch it up and let guest chef David Garcia make homemade Mexican street-style tacos, tamales and mulitas. Garcia makes homemade masa for the tamales, which come in pork or jalapeno cheese, and sell for $3. He also hand-presses the tortillas to make chicken, pork and carne asada tacos ($2.50-3.50). Those are garnished and served with his own salsas, too. When I dropped by for lunch, I took six tamales to go for dinner. “Coming from Oregon, there are so many micro brews,” says Braun. “I went to high school in Bend and it’s like the mecca of microbrews. I would leave and come back and there would be even more microbrews. Great beers and a young vibrant athletic community–similar to here. I’ve been here three years now, but when I got here I felt like getting great beers was so limited. I wanted to open a great taphouse for Maui.” The tap house also serves growlers, and offers a brand new 64-ounce hydro-flask that will keep your beer cold for hours. What Ales You also has an “Around The World” card, in which you can get a growler for trying 16 different beers. During Happy Hour (noon to 3pm) you can get $2 off beer and wine and $6 brats. What Ales You is open from 11am to 10pm daily. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Kojima's CHEF KOKIMA-SAN SAYS HE’S RETIRED, BUT HE’S STILL MAKING FANTASTIC SUSHI UPCOUNTRY

200-300 appetizers he put on his Chicago menu. He has chosen the best items for the Maui palette, which is different from his Mainland and Japanese customers. “I had Japanese customers that came from Hokkaido to Kyushu to eat at my restaurant in Chicago,” he said. “Many were traveling salesman. I had to create all of these dishes that they wanted to eat, that they were familiar with from their own hometowns. That is why we had to have so many different dishes.” On Maui, people prefer sushi rolls over sashimi, and hot entrees like katsu and teriyaki are popular as well. “In Japan, people eat their appetizer as their first course,” Amy said. “Then they eat sashimi, and then some nigiri, then a noodle dish or brothy rice dish. For Maui, we had to

Kojima’s also offers a bento dinner entree that features his handmade steamed shumai, seaweed salad, sashimi, shrimp and veggie tempura and your option of protein. I went for the broiled salmon and it was cooked tender with a light glaze on top. I like Japanese lacquerbox dishes, and this one was exceptional. Kojima makes all his own dressings, sauces, gyoza and desserts. Check the specials menu for other local favorites like curry udon, tempura soba, kama and katsu. He may say he has a scaled down menu, but it’s pretty extensive by our standards. While they can seat up to 80 people in the restaurant, they have a tight-knit service staff and just one Chef Kojima-San. Your best plan is to bring some sake (it’s all BYOB), order some appetizers and rolls and remember that

discovered Chef Kojima-San one recent dark and stormy night in Pukalani. Kojima’s has been making authentic Japanese cuisine since about 2012, but it took me a while to stumble through its sliding screen door. Its the kind of restaurant that greets you with "Itadakimasu!" Kojima's is comfortable and inviting inside, and I immediately felt like I’d discovered a little Japanese nook Upcountry. It’s a hole in the wall kind of restaurant with a lot of charm inside. There is not another restaurant around for

miles, but that’s not unusual for this end of Makawao Avenue. Even better, Chef Kojima-San uses his own family recipes, and everything is handmade. They like to make traditional Japanese cuisine. Kojima originally started cooking at his parent’s restaurant in Tokyo when he was just 14. From there he worked at the prestigious Tokyo Hotel, then on to New York and the Chicago Ritz. There he eventually opened his own restaurant called Edo Ya. When he decided to retire to Maui, he also worked at many of the restaurants here before deciding to open Kojima’s with his daughter Amy. Kojima’s pours his decades of experience into his menu. He has extensive sushi and pupu offerings that include lots of raw and fried dishes, veggies, seafood, tofu and soup. But he says it’s small compared to the

change the menu to fit the way we eat here. We have 20 to 30 appetizers, about seven hot entrees and 20 nigiri with a few sashimi options, and then all the sushi rolls.” All Kojima’s sushi rolls are stunning. I especially loved the spider roll. The breading and texture on the softshell crab was crisp and delicious. I ate half at the restaurant and took some home. It stood up fine to the travel. Then there was the Red Dragon roll–a spicy tuna roll topped with tuna and avocado. It was pristine. I plan to return for the fried oysters, agedashi and beef tataki. Kojima says his most popular rolls are the Haleakala roll (a baked roll) and the Rock and Roll, a California/eel hybrid. I was drawn to rich array of rolls and nigiri that he presented–more than 20 of each–and each of the nigiri could also be ordered as sashimi.

the rolls will take longer to prepare. Amy says they’ve worked hard to dial their systems in and now have it all down. Kojima’s also has a big deck outside with quite a few tables for Upcountry al fresco dining, as well as their main dining room and the sushi bar. You can get a sunset dinner special from (5-6pm) that includes shrimp and vegetable tempura, salad, rice, miso soup and your choice of teriyaki chicken or salmon. They also welcome you to bring your own sake, beer or wine. Take out on their menu is available too. Kojima’s is open for lunch Monday to Friday, 11:30am to 2pm; and dinner, Monday to Saturday, 5pm to 9:30pm. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Rocket Man Ridley Scott has fun marooning Matt Damon on Mars in ‘The Martian’ ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 141 Min.

I

n Ridley Scott’s The Martian, an accident leaves astronaut Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon) stranded on Mars. While his crew (led by Jessica Chastain) is unaware of his surviving alone on the red planet, Watney maintains his desire to stay alive, even as his situation is utterly dire and his life expectancy becomes increasingly slim with every passing day. Some of the imagery brings to mind Alien and Prometheus, especially early on, with the actors exploring Martian landscapes in bulky space suits. Yet this is tonally unlike any film Scott has made before. In terms of going against expectations, this is every bit a change of pace as Thelma & Louise and Matchstick Men. While The Martian is a survival tale, much of it plays like a wry sci-fi comedy. Damon gives a thoroughly enjoyable turn, allowing us to see how Watney’s sense of humor and constant challenges to innovate are what keep him alive. We root for Watney the whole way, as Damon’s performance conveys the stress of a brilliant

scientist, cornered into thinking his way out of an impossible scenario. Watney’s humorous monologues give the film punch, as does the amusing way disco music improbably becomes a character in the story. To the film’s credit, we doesn’t lose interest when the story cuts down to Earth and gives focus to the scientists plotting to bring Watney back home. Damon’s character is the only one fully fleshed out, though it helps that his co-stars, including Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofer, Jeff Daniels and Donald Glover, are good. Only Kristen Wiig, as a corporate suit, seems out of place among the ensemble. This mash-up of Cast Away and Apollo 13 is one of Scott’s funniest and most crowd-pleasing. It’s also one of his safest. Like Spike Lee’s Inside Man, it’s a polished piece of filmmaking and deserving of its acclaim but lacks the wildness of Scott’s best films. Only during the terrific final stretch does The Martian become as thrilling as one would hope. Scott has always been a master at creating new worlds and making them appear vivid and tangible. Here, the Mars landscapes are both lovely and dread inducing, leading to climactic moments that are nothing less than amazing.

I'm just glad Matthew McConaughey won't be rescuing me this time

After early 21st century cinematic depictions of adventure on Mars, here’s the first that will likely become a classic. I have a soft spot for the knowingly goofy John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars but shared audience disappointment over Mission to Mars, Red Planet and John Carter. It’s worth noting that, with Scott as the director, the planet has never seemed more real on the big screen. This is not Ridley Scott’s comeback. Frankly, I’m annoyed that anyone would suggest that he needed one. Audiences were divided by his grand, weird and frustratingly ambiguous Prometheus, avoided his risk-taking, raw and shocking The Counselor altogether and greeted his

excellent Robin Hood with a shrug. Truth be told, Scott has only made two poor films: the ill-advised romantic comedy A Good Year and the mostly forgotten White Squall. Otherwise, his recent films, even the impressive but cold Exodus: Gods and Kings, will find an appreciative audience down the road and in the long run. Scott is one of our best living filmmakers and, at 77-years old, shows no signs of slowing down. Next up for him is a sequel to Prometheus. While I enjoyed The Martian and suspect film lovers by and large will embrace it, I’m ready for Scott to get weird again... and explain how Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender’s severed head find that alien planet. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

For good or ill, Libras often see things in terms of personal gain. It’s that whole scale thing; you’re constantly weighing, evaluating, and judging. This is how you’ve gotten a reputation as shallow social climbers, who only act out of pure self-interest. I know that’s not truly accurate, of course; just because you can’t help seeing things in that light doesn’t mean you always have to act on that basis. Does it? Prove your naysayers wrong this week by doing lots of good that you won’t get anything for–not even credit. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Presentation, in this case, is everything. You can make a case for preposterous bullshit like humans having lived with dinosaurs in the Garden of Eden if you are articulate and convicted, and a certain subset of your audience will buy into it, hook, line, and sinker. On the other hand, you could also present a well-reasoned theory of evolution, backed by the scientific community and cartloads of evidence, but if you do it in a way that’s tedious and whiny, you’ll lose a percentage of your audience. It sucks, I know, that some people are so inept at critical thinking, but that’s the reality of the situation. At the moment, lame as it is, it doesn’t matter so much what you say as how you say it. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

From here it sort of looks like you’ve retreated to the moral low ground and dug in, preparing to make your stand there. I’m not sure why, to be absolutely honest, you’d adopt such a lame, losing strategy, especially because the position you’re trying to defend, while not exactly mainstream popular, is hardly devoid of ethical value. Marshal the courage of your convictions. They’re valid and worthy of respect and consideration from everyone, even if they won’t ultimately agree with them. By forcefully advocating what you believe in this week, you won’t win over many converts, but you will win their respect.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Why not walk around pretending you have superpowers? Or a billion dollars that you’re just waiting until the right moment to use? I’m a big fan of people reinventing their realities to make them more interesting, and you Rams are especially good at it. The trick is letting it be a game and not cross the line into self-delusion. If you play the game right, your world becomes vastly more interesting (for everyone), you get to be more dynamic and explore a wider range of possible selves, and magic can actually happen. Guess what else? This week, it’s not just fun, it’s also, strangely, a route to changing your life for real.

QUIZ understood 1: D–1,180 2: B–Cyber Security Awareness Month 3: C–A new first floor security post will become active.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

If you’re eligible for an award, you’re liable to win one this week. If not, it’s quite likely you’re going to get some kind of recognition for who you are and the way you do things. Enjoy the well-deserved accolades, but beware of them as well. There’s nothing more likely to constipate your evolutionary process more than praise. In other words, don’t let that crap go to your head or convince you you’ve got your shit together. The second you decide you’re on top of your game is when you’ll get run right over by it. Enjoy the rave reviews, by all means–but then get right back to work. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Last week I told you to focus on the little things, and I’m glad I did. It’s amazing what a tremendous effect the smallest detail can have on you Twins. I’ve seen you fundamentally swayed by a gentle autumn breeze, a wink from a stranger, or a snippet of a song heard in passing. One of the problems with being so sensitive is that you can take pleasure in such gorgeous tiny moments, but you’re also saddened that so many around you cannot. Make remedying this incongruity this week’s task. If you can teach just one person—or better yet, three or four—how to experience rapture from the color of an autumn leaf (or something similar), you’ll have done your job.

Something you’ve believed in and advocated for a long time will finally be put to the test this week. You’ll also be subject to a kind of test yourself. What I mean is, you won’t stand or fall with the success or failure of whatever you put your money on. It’s bigger than that. It’s also an examination of self-faith as well as your willingness to question yourself, your convictions, and your goals. The true trial is whether you continue to believe in it regardless of the actual outcome, and–even more important–whether or not that’s really a good thing.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

I know Cancers who find ways to blame their frequent emotionality on being drunk, or worse, actually get drunk a lot so as to have that camouflage. I know we live in a world where crying and cackling and raging and any kind of extreme expression of emotion just isn’t really okay. But the fact is, those things are very human, whatever we pretend to the contrary, and they’re especially Cancerian. The trick to making our future one where it’s okay just to be you isn’t to find ways to disguise or make excuses for it. Just be it. No embarrassment. No apologies.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

The distant planet Neptune has been cruising backwards through your territory for the last little bit; this week it’s surging back into forward motion, retracing the path it’s already taken twice before in recent memory. What’s this mean for you? An abundance of deja vu? Maybe, but probably not. Actually, it’s a chance for you to go over and perfect the things you’ve been working on–whether that means rewriting your novel, overhauling your workspace, or simplifying and purifying your relationship. It’s not often you get this much time and space to really give your dreams their best shot at realization. You’d be a fool to waste this chance. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

If anyone’s familiar with feeling like an outsider, it’s you. Even in group situations where you can logically conclude that you’re most definitely not an outsider–like your own family–you still somehow often manage to feel like one. Personally, I don’t get it, but I’m not about to pass judgment on it, either. Whatever the case, this week you’re going to come face-to-face with this self-enforced paradigm. I don’t know if you’ll decide it’s useless and just holding you back, or fundamental to who you are. How you deal with it is up to you; just be assured you’ll probably have no choice.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

That whole angel on one shoulder, devil on the other cliché is sort of apropos this week, only their counsel isn’t so starkly moralistic; it’s more subtlety versus brute force. It’s a tough decision, and even I can’t tell you which method will work best to get you into the situation you desire: talking your way in, or just shoving past whatever opposition attempts to stand against you. Since either method is equally likely to work, and both are morally ambiguous, which one will be the most fun? That, of course, is the one you should employ. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Sorry, no time to write you a proper horoscope. I’m dying to reorganize my bookshelves. Maybe after that I’ll sort the Tupperware in the kitchen. I’ve noticed the houseplants desperately need pruning, and if I give the bathtub a scrub I’ll actually feel okay about taking a bath—should I ever have time to do so…. I know all these busy things you get up to feel important, but sometimes you must admit you use them to keep yourself from having to deal with stuff that’s truly much more important, if possibly harder to properly address. Notice that this week, then put aside your busy-work so you can actually deal with it. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com.
