THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:

MAUI RESTAURANT OWNER OFFERS OWN TAKE ON LC I am the owner of Casanova restaurant in Makawao. As you know I have been a MauiTime supporter since Issue #1 (when we were young) and exposed to Maui Liquor Commission power since 1989. Twenty-six years of Wednesday’s Ladies night (make it 1,500 of them) plus another 3,000 weekend entertainment nights. Not too bad of a record. During all these years, I managed a handful of liquor laws violation notices (the fingers of two hands will suffice to count them all), few trials in front of the Adjudication Board, where I always played my own lawyer (I won one and lost all others...). God only knows how many times I wondered if a little oil would have greased the wheel in my favor. Maybe my Italian origins lower the bar of my concept of integrity, but not once in 26 years I was induced to understand that a few dollars here and there would have helped my case. Not once. Even a Godblessed slice of warm pizza at night is politely rejected by LC commissioners. And at 2am, that can be more desirable than a lap dance in an hostess bar! That’s why when I see the cover of MauiTime and the title of your article suggesting that [outgoing Director Frank] Silva was leading a corrupt organization, my reaction is “Really?” (“The Barfather,” Oct. 15, 2015). Not really. The cases you list in the body of your article are, in my view, very little evidence of a systematic practice of corruption coming from the top. My 26 years of experience as a liquor license holder are a testimony of the opposite. Not that I say that everything is right with this LC. Individual commissioners on the field often exercise their power as if the liquor license holders are

enemies to be defeated, not the people who pay their salary thru their yearly dues. The trials in front of the board are a simple ratification of the will of the LC Director. The Not Guilty decisions are so rare that all lawyers involved in this business–the few of them still available for it–can name them one by one by heart for the last 20 years. Two? Three? Not more than five. Ridiculous. Or maybe, the evidence that Mr. Silva, in his wisdom, has been able to weed out all cases without meaningful evidence of guilt and send to the Board only the most obvious cases of guilt. My personal experience is that Silva’s interpretation of the current law is that the licensee is guilty unless he proves his innocence in cases of serving underage or intoxicated patrons and that is not fair. As in all criminal trials, the prosecution should have the burden to prove that the licensee did not do his job in preventing underage drinking or drinking by intoxicated patrons and that he/she was aware of the conditions of the patrons illegally served. Again and again, I experienced rulings that, no matter how diligent my people have been, we were guilty as long as someone was found intoxicated inside the premises. That has to change and I hope it will. I hope that Dana Souza, whom I personally know as a very intelligent and fair man, brings a new climate in his office and let trickle down the concept that we are all in it together. None of us tries to make a buck selling that last beer that makes a young girl intoxicated. Let’s all help each other to prevent drunk driving and keep our streets safe. Most bar owners I know on Maui are very aware of their responsibility to prevent such occurrences to happen. For everything else–and it’s a lot– it’s about changing the existing laws, which is responsibility of the County Council, not of the enforcers of the laws. My revolutionary idea is to abolish the Liquor Control Department and let the Maui PD enforce laws that punish drivers when they drive intoxicated or minors when they drink under age. Bar owners’ civil liability for such cases is more of enough of a deterrent. Let’s open a debate in the community on reforming the existing laws and changing a climate which penalizes young people. Maui cannot only be for golfers and honeymooners, who go to sleep at 9pm. Let’s stop penalizing fun! -Giovanni Steven Cappelli, via email

empire, and public outrage means nothing to them. Why take the time to care about the public when you think the public is irrelevant? We’re long past the point of wondering whether changing the Maui County Charter so that the LC is treated like any other department is preferable to this. They need to go, and until they do, the entire department is clouded in shame and suspicion.

HAWAII SENATORS NOT HAPPY ABOUT SENDING TROOPS TO SYRIA President Barack Obama promised at least 16 times between August 2013 and July of this year that he would not send combat troops to Syria, which is the midst of a long and bloody multi-faction civil war, according to an Oct. 31 USA Today story. And though he enjoys using the “boots on the ground” euphemism, he was pretty clear in his intentions. “I will not put American boots on the ground in Syria,” Obama said on Sept.

from next month to advise opposition forces in their fight against Islamic State, a major policy shift for President Barack Obama and a step he has long resisted to avoid getting dragged into another war in the Middle East,” Reuters reported on Oct. 31. “[White House spokesperson Josh] Earnest said the new mission in Syria was open ended and did not rule out the possibility of sending additional special forces troops into Iraq.” Hawaii’s two U.S. Senators–both of whom are Democrats–aren’t too happy about it. Of the two, Senator Brian Schatz was clearly the more perturbed. “The Administration’s announcement that it will deploy Special Operations Forces into Syria to combat ISIL [one of the nastier factions fighting Bashar al-Assad’s murderous regime] marks a major shift in U.S. policy—a shift that is occurring without congressional debate, is unlikely to succeed in achieving our objective of defeating ISIL and instead threatens to embroil the United States in Syria’s civil war and could bring us into direct confrontation with PHOTO BY VOICE OF AMERICA NEWS / WIKIMEDIA

It’s time to abolish the Maui County Liquor Commission. Maybe the whole Liquor Control Department too, but we should certainly start by sweeping the tin-plated, know-nothing Liquor Commissioners out of the county government. They are worse than useless–they are antidemocratic cronies who show nothing but contempt for citizen oversight and public accountability–and the sooner they’re gone, the sooner Maui County citizens can get assurance the mammoth Liquor department is being run honestly. Since time began, these nine appointed “Commissioners” sit once a month in their corporate polo shirts emblazoned with the LC badge and decide who in Maui County should get a liquor license. They also approve the department’s $3 million or so budget (funded largely by liquor license fees) and monitor the performance of the LC Director (who, on paper, serves at their behest). Though designed to insulate the LC from the political machinations of the County Council and Mayor’s office, the Liquor Commission itself has devolved into a star chamber packed with toadies who know nothing of open government protections or even simple public decency. Their latest assault on open government is the travesty that is the appointment of Dana Souza–one of their own members–to the post of Liquor Control Director (the current director, Frank Silva, is retiring effective Nov. 1 after 22 years on the job). Since Silva’s retirement announcement in September, the Liquor Commission has done everything short of urinating on the state’s Sunshine Law to make sure Commissioner Dana Souza succeeds Silva. They first met on Oct. 7 to deal with

the matter. Though their agenda said they’d discuss the process of selecting a new director, the commission quickly voted for Souza to take over. After MauiTime cried foul and shoved the Hawaii Sunshine Law in their faces, they retreated and scheduled a do-over for Oct. 28 (though neither Liquor Commission Chairperson Robert Tanaka nor Corporation Counsel Attorney Ed Kushi–who advised the commission on Oct. 7 and should have known better than to let them get away with trampling open government so brazenly–bothered to respond to my inquiries. Of course, the Oct. 28 meeting was little better. Though the agenda for this meeting once again included a lot of action items related to discussing possible candidates and selection processes, the commissioners merely retreated into closed session, then voted to waive all that discussion and nonsense and vote on the real matter at hand–making Dana Souza the director. According to The Maui News, just one commissioner–Dawn Bicoy–voted against dispensing with an open, democratic process. Though two members of the public– Maui County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Richard Minatoya and Maui County Board of Ethics member Sara Gadarian–testified that their responsibilities demanded that they deliberate over a new director in public, the fix was in. They had long ago decided that Dana Souza–the son of former LC Director Joe Souza–was their man, and to hell with an open selection process that might find someone else who was more qualified. The whole meeting took just 30 minutes. “Even though the agenda said ‘discussion,’ there was no discussion,” Gadarian, whose late husband Blackie Gadarian was a former Liquor Commissioner himself, told me after the meeting. “Zero. That’s why the meeting was so short.” Hilariously, neither Kushi nor Tanaka would comment to The Maui News for their story either. And why should they? They operate in their tiny LC bubble and lord over their very cushy

Syria, 2012

10, 2013, according to USA Today. “I will not pursue an open-ended action like Iraq or Afghanistan. But now that’s all in the past. “The United States will deploy dozens of special operations troops to northern Syria

the Russian Federation military and Syrian government forces,” he said in an Oct. 30 statement. “This shift in policy is a strategic mistake. Regardless of my views, the War Powers Resolution requires Congress to debate and authorize the escalation of U.S. military involvement in Syria.” Senator Mazie Hirono largely agreed, though her language was a bit more tempered. “In our effort to degrade and destroy ISIL, the President has reiterated that it is not in our national interest to send U.S. combat troops into yet another ground war in the Middle East,” Hirono said in an Oct. 30 press statement. “I agree, and as a member of the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, I will hold the Administration to that commitment.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

Though formed nearly a decade ago to make it easy for people making less than the median income to buy their own homes, the nonprofit Na Hale O Maui is finally building its first home. “This was always our goal—the building of new homes affordable in perpetuity through use of a sustainable lease agreement that can be passed on to one’s heirs and takes the cost of land out of the pricing and still provides all the benefits of traditional home ownership, including the development of home equity,” said NHOM Executive Director John Andersen in an Oct. 30 press release. “Now we are back to our original business model and our first affordable in perpetuity new home to be built is located on Kama Street in Waikapu. It is a 4 bedroom 2 and 1/2 bath home that has 1,600 sg. ft. of living area with an additional 350+ sg. ft. when the garage and lanai are included.” MauiTime first wrote about Na Hale O Maui in 2007, not long after it formed and shortly before the entire housing market blew apart, leading to the worst economic recession since the 1930s. The nonprofit’s plan, then and now, was simple: use the community land trust model to separate the price of the home itself from the

land on which it sits. That way, a person can buy a new single-family home without using a scary mortgage or managing a lot of ohana units. Of course, the person also has to live in the house full-time and agree that, if needed, sale of the house can only be back to the land trust itself (for a profit, sure, but not anywhere near what could be made selling on the open market). NHOM’s goals back in 2007 were ambitious, to say the least. “Within the next five years, they hope to have 300 to 500 projects done,” we wrote in our Feb. 22, 2007 story “Dream Home.” “Within a decade, they want to see between 2,000 and 2,500 properties on Maui held in community trust.” Of course, none of that happened. The Great Recession led NHOM away from building new affordable homes to reselling foreclosed homes. “Despite the worst recession since the Great Depression NHOM was able to place 30 families in 3 and 4 bedroom affordable homes over the past few years,” states Na Hale O Maui’s Oct. 30 news release. “With two more to be placed shortly for a total of 32 homes overall.” Anyway, NHOM will hold a free Homebuyer Seminar on Sat., Nov. 14 at the J. Walter Cameron Center. For more information, call 808-244-6110.

Controversy aside, the Gemini Observatory atop Mauna Kea on the Big Island can now boast as having the second-highest solar panels in the world. The panels, installed by Maui Pacific Solar, will be capable of providing about 10 percent of the power at the Gemini Observatory. The installation of the panels on the telescope’s roof was completed earlier this month. Maui Pacific Solar expects the panels to be connected to the electrical grid within the next few weeks. “The PV panels [on Mauna Kea] are the second-highest in the world by about 200 feet,” said Maui Pacific Solar Founder and President Mike Carroll. “The highest are in Tibet.” Because of the extreme elevation, Gemini officials said the panels will be 70 percent more effective than those that will be installed at its base facility in Hilo.

“We supplied a number of schools on Maui, but Molokai had to wait until the final distribution.” Once the plan to donate the good to Molokai was finalized, the next step was to find a way to ship it all to the neighboring island. Sorenson emailed Young Brothers, who agreed to generously provide shipping to Molokai, she said. “Now we had to figure out how to get everything into a shipping container and down to the harbor,” Sorenson said. “That is when the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce stepped in to assist.” MNHCoC members Teri Freitas Gorman and Mercer “Chubby” Vicens put the call out for a trucking company that would be willing to drop off a container in Kula for loading and to haul it back to the harbor. Richard “Chick” DeCoite of DeCoite Trucking and T. Sniffen & Sons, LLC stepped up to offer their services. Sixteen volunteers from the Realtors Association of Maui devoted a Saturday morning to packing it all. “We were all tired when we

Students of five Molokai schools received a shipping container full of resort furniture, supplies and new fans thanks to a cooperative effort spearheaded by the Realtors Association of Maui Community Foundation’s “Wishing Well…for Maui Students” program. The plan to ship the goods to Molokai began in March when the Foundation’s founder and director, Sarah Sorenson, was contacted by Randall Nelson, who is a general contractor and site supervisor for Elements of Hospitality; EoH was overseeing the renovation of the WorldMark Wyndham Resort in Kihei at the time. “We worked together for four months, moving their donated furniture,” Sorenson said.

closed the container, but it felt good,” Sorenson said. “It was a community effort and I want to thank everyone who lent a hand. They embody our Foundation’s motto–Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something.” Last week the container arrived in Molokai’s Kaunakakai Harbor. “You are all so cool,” said Kualapu‘u Public Conversion Charter School principal Lydia Trinidad. “This is our first day back from our fall break and we received a special gift of fans from your foundation…it's October and it’s still 90 degrees. The students will love it.” The non-profit Realtors Association of Maui Community Foundation, Inc. established Wishing Well…for Maui Students in 2007 to improve the educational experiences and opportunities for public school students in Maui County. News Of The Weird DOING TIME RIGHT In October, a Harvard University debate team (three-time recent champions of the American Parliamentary Debate Association) lost a match to a team of prisoners from the maximum-security Eastern New York Correctional Facility. Prison debaters “are held to the exact same standards” as college debate teams, according to the director of Bard College’s Prison Initiative, which coaches the inmates. Prisoners took the “pro” side of public schools having the right to turn away students whose parents had entered the U.S. illegally (though team members personally disagreed). The Bard trainers pointed out that the inmates perfected their presentation despite (or perhaps because of) the prison prohibition on Internet access.

WAIT, WHAT? The Merit Systems Protection Board is (wrote The Washington Post) “a personnel court of last resort” for federal employees unfairly punished by demotion or firing–which is just what employee Timothy Korb needed when his federal agency suspended him in 2013, allegedly for revealing at a staff meeting that the agency’s actual case backlog was much worse than it was letting on. Korb’s employer, ironically, is the Merit Systems Protection Board, and in September 2015, an administrative law judge upheld his claim of unfairness.

Philosophy professor Anna Stubblefield (Rutgers-Newark University) was convicted of aggravated sexual assault against a severely disabled man she was discovered having sex with on the floor in a locked office, but at trial in September, she testified that the man had “consent[ed]” and that the two were “in love.” The victim, 34, has cerebral palsy and other ailments, wears diapers, requires assistance for nearly all activities, is intellectually disabled and does not speak, “except for making noises,” according to a brother. Stubblefield had been working with him on the controversial practice of “facilitated communication,” in which a facilitator reads a patient’s mind via subtleties such as eye movement and articulates the words for him. However, a jury failed to appreciate that facilitated “consent” and quickly convicted her.

An NFL spokesman, finally playing catch-up, said in September, “[N]o one should be paid to honor our troops.”

LEGISLATORS IN ACTION In a recent resolution, Blount County (Tennessee) Commissioner Karen Miller called for her fellow commissioners and state officials all the way up to the governor to prepare for “God’s wrath” for recent national policies (same-sex marriage, etc.) she disagrees with. Though other states might be in for a smiting, Miller’s resolution calls on God to spare Blount County (by the “safety of the Passover lamb”). In October, the commission tabled the resolution, 10-5, but she promised to reintroduce it.

THE WEIRDO-AMERICAN COMMUNITY “Officially” declaring oneself not subject to the laws of any jurisdiction (i.e., a “sovereign”) opens a wide range of career choices. The FBI and Las Vegas police say that in Rick Van Thiel’s case, once his porn industry career ended (because someone stole his video equipment), he “decided to go into the medical field,” becoming “Dr. Rick” with expertise performing dozens of abortions, circumcisions and castrations (plus cancer treatments and root canals). Proudly avoiding actual licensing, Van Thiel promoted “alternative” remedies, with an office in a Nevada compound of trailers that one hesitant “patient” described as something out of a horror movie. Van Thiel, arrested in October, nonetheless staunchly defended his ability (acquired, he said, by watching YouTube medical videos). Of course, he will be acting as his own lawyer.

PERSPECTIVE In June, Tennessee’s much-publicized program to kick drug users off of welfare rolls (and only from welfare rolls, among all people receiving any type of state subsidy) wound up its first year cutting off fewer than 40 people out of 28,559 people on public assistance (“temporary assistance to needy families”). Nonetheless, the sponsoring legislators said they were pleased with the program and planned no changes. The state paid a contractor $11,000 to conduct 468 drug tests, but did not disclose staff costs of processing applications, deciding who to test and managing cases.

NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME It was at 7:30am on Oct. 8 that, according to Dallas police, Kristopher Jones, 18, and a buddy decided it would be Joy’s Donut shop they should rob. As they exited the store (one carrying the shop’s cash register), a uniformed, off-duty officer (who apparently had pulled up to the store– for doughnuts) saw the whole thing and arrested Jones (though his partner was able to flee). ■

e stopped by Hookipa Pavilions to watch the big waves and saw a hose spicket by the pavilion tables running full blast with a group of birds hanging around it. The water was just running and running, wasting so many gallons of water. We walked over to turn it off and the group of men sitting there said not to turn it off. When I mentioned that water was precious and expensive they said that the birds need the water too. They finally turned the spigot off after at least 10 minutes of running it full blast. SHAME ON YOU for wasting the aina’s precious resources! If you really want to give the birdies some water, fill a bowl, same as for a dog, instead of just letting it run all over the ground. ■

MAUI’S

SWIMMING LEGENDS

We talk story with Julie Checkoway, author of the new book ‘The Three-Year Swim Club’ about Coach Soichi Sakamoto, the sugar ditch kids and Olympic glory.

By Anthony Pignataro

I

t’s not an exaggeration to say the green Waikapu on 30 restaurant has been there forever. It’s a little convenience store, selling plate lunches, sandwiches, snacks and drinks, but inside are little reminders–a shelf covered with old bottles, tin signs–that recall its past. The building dates back to the early years of the 20th century, when it was the old Sakamoto Store. Out front, in 1918, little Soichi Sakamoto–the 12-year-old son of the store’s proprietor–was hit by a Maui Police truck and nearly killed. Had Sakamoto died then and there, one of Maui’s greatest stories of courage and determination might never have happened. Most people on Maui today know of Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool, an eight-lane, 50-meter public pool located near War Memorial Gym in Wailuku. But the details of why we honor Sakamoto today aren’t so apparent. Even the County of Maui’s webpage for the pool includes just two sentences on Sakamoto: “Named for legendary Maui Swim Coach Soichi Sakamoto who developed many Olympic champions in the 30’s & 40’s. ‘Maui Ditch kids’ trained in the Irrigation ditches using repeat & wind-sprint techniques. Coach Sakamoto brought these revolutionary training techniques to the world and are the standard today.” The story of Sakamoto and his “ThreeYear Swim Club” is an extraordinary tale of Hawaiian and Japanese-American kids in the

1930s who in just a few short years went from swimming in the Pu‘unene sugar plantation’s irrigation ditches to equaling or besting swimmers who’d medaled in the Olympics. It’s a wild, improbable story that makes for popular Hollywood movies but rarely happens in real life. But this story’s real. Coach Sakamoto, who taught at Pu‘unene Elementary School, really did revolutionize swimming instruction and train his kids to go to the Olympics (his plan called for three years of training–hence the name of his club). The kids really did learn how to swim in the ditches (a very dangerous activity, then and now, and even today Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar has posted ads warning people to stay out of the ditches). And some of his kids really did qualify for the 1940 Olympics (which were cancelled in 1939 when war broke out in Europe). And they did so facing all the racist prejudice and injustice that came with being a person of color in America in the 1930s and ‘40s. Now there’s a new book out called The Three-Year Swim Club that details Sakamoto and the sugar ditch kids. Written by Julie Checkoway, the book represents the first thorough documentation of Sakamoto’s life, and the achievements of his swimmers. I recently spoke to Checkoway by phone to discuss the book, her research and why she chose to spend so much time writing about Maui’s sugar ditch kids.

so much for speaking Q: Thanks with us. I heard you’re recovering from a concussion, and didn’t do a lot of promotion. mostly finished the book, which A: Iwashadlucky. I was taking a puppy out on a rainy morning, and I slipped down the back step. I hit my head five times. It cost me a lot of cognitive abilities right away. I couldn’t work on the proofs of the book. I lost a lot of abilities to retrieve language. When the proofs came, I had some extra time. My husband was super helpful. I rewrote the ending of the book. were you originally going to Q: How end the book? I was going to end with Bill Smith [a Hawaiian boy who received trainA: ing from Sakamoto and ultimately medaled in the 1948 Olympics but who wasn’t an original Three-Year Swim Club member]. But I was always uncomfortable that he was the de facto hero of the story. He fulfilled the dream of the club, but it wasn’t enough to acknowledge the gold. I had to acknowledge the achievements of others. I went back to reading about Keo Nakama’s swim in the Molokai Channel, and I got really weepy.

Harbor. There are a lot of old-timers hanging out there during the day. I asked the guys what it was like in the old days. They asked me why. I told them [about the 1939 boating accident that killed three people there, including Sakamoto’s brother Benzo], and they said they’d never heard of it. Benzo’s accident had been a front-page story in The Maui News at the time. I went to the old Sakamoto store and saw all this stuff from the original store–tiny medicine bottles, metal signs. I approached the owner, and she said that when she bought the store, all this stuff came with it, but she didn’t know the story. I went to Pu‘unene School. I went into the classrooms and could see Sakamoto’s handwriting was still on the walls. I asked if anyone knew what had happened in the school in the 1930s. They didn’t know. I felt kinda like a jerk, but it was such a gift to me to be able to share what little I knew. One reason is that when you talk story, it changes. People valued their history tremendously, but they didn’t archive it. People love their family’s history, but it might be in their garage.

is the story of the club not Q: How did you first hear of the club? Q: Why so well known anymore? I was working at the Salt Lake Trias a staff writer. Maybe I’ll When I’ve been on Maui, I found A: A: myself puzzled. I went to Kahului find abune book there, I thought, but noth-

your book has remarkQ: Well, able detail. Sakamoto died in 1997, but I remember reading a paragraph you wrote describing him having lunch at George Higa’s Honolulu Cafe in the 1930s–what he was eating, how famished he was. And I kept wondering how you got all that detail.

Soichi Sakamoto, circa 1939

ing felt right. My agent Irene Colt called from New York. She scours newspapers, the Internet, for stories. She saw this somewhere, I don’t even know where. She called me at my desk at the Tribune, and said she came across this story that she didn’t think had been told. She asked me if I thought it was true. “Irene,” I said, “if that’s even close to being true, then it’s too good to be true. And if it’s even vaguely true, then I want to see what I can do.”

[which were cancelled that year due to World War II] but had never received her certification. When her son grew up, he said his mom never spoke of her swimming career. “My mom just let it go,” he said. To the degree it can, the book is to honor the swimmers, let them live again and show the incredible heroism of this incredible team. But it also honors their families–they knew the swimmers, but their stories are almost gone. I have no business telling it, so I’m just handing it back to them.

A: Would you really like to know? Q: Sure! Every sentence in the book is A: sourced. For that part, in 1984 there was a film documentary called Coach. There were transcripts that hadn’t made it into the film, and in those he described how he always had to control his appetite, especially in front of the kids. So I called and called people until I found a waitress who used to work there. I asked what was on the menu, what it felt like, what the seats were like, the windows. I got menus from different restaurants in the area. Things like that all had to come together. So many pieces fell together, and it was such a pleasure to write.

I think what people would say is, “I A: It has to be done by the right people. A: You go through it, and there is wonderful never knew he invented this.” The swimThis is a big story that the country lost. It’s writing that tells bits of the Three Year Swim Club story. I called Keith, and he was so generous. From Keith, it became clear that if I followed the trail he laid out for me, I could pull together the story. I looked through The Maui News archives and people’s basements. There was a 27-minute documentary [on Soichi Sakamoto] called Coach. The filmmaker had thousands of pages of interview transcripts on Oahu. I felt so incompetent to put all these together, but didn’t know what else to do. a few 3YSC members are Q: Only still alive. do you hope readers take Q: What from your book? It’s just a book. Having a book A: out is like not having a book out. Books don’t matter so much anymore. But I hope everyone on Maui buys the book, or shares it, or gets it from the library. Somebody said, “Don’t you see how it speaks to the fundamental argument politicians are having today about immigrants?” It was a time of the “yellow peril,” where people were incarcerated for being Japanese. But people of all ethnicities have given to this country. Hard work doesn’t always raise you out of poverty–we know that. But at the same time, to dismiss the power and beauty of what immigrants can offer is missing the point. This book tells a story of heroes of Japanese ancestry. We don’t have many of those book on the shelves. And as much as I loved Unbroken , it portrays Japanese as horrendous villains. I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but I wanted to tell other stories. That film and book makes you angry, but what’s so hard about telling a different story? Balance the scales a little bit? We need to understand the importance of Japanese Americans in history, and the incredibly raw deal they had, and how they prevailed. These are people I’m passionate about, and have come to love and honor.

long did you research your Q: How book? I started looking at the story in 2008. I just wanted to find out if A: there was enough material for a book–if what was in the public record could be corroborated by living people. Overall, it took five solid years. I never said, “Will you help me?” I just asked questions. People decided how much they were going to help me. They were extremely generous. They came with whatever archival material they had. I digitized everything, then gave it back. I didn’t want to

f you’re looking for a cherry BYOB spot, I’ve found one for you. The Ohana Seafood Bar & Grill on South Kihei Road has ono grinds, an open but still shady deck and great views of the sunset and ocean. They also started up a daily brunch from 10am to 3pm. The now-defunct Pupu Lounge has a new banner over its sign, completely new staff, owners and an all-new kitchen. Owners Shane and Tracey Johnston are excited about their project, and their plan is to attract locals and tourists to their casual Kihei Kalama Village spot. “Great food for reasonable prices–that’s what we’re about,” said Shane Johnston. “I want the locals and the tourists to be able to come in and get good solid food for a good price. Our menu is seafood American. A lot of fish items like fish and chips, grilled mahi, fish tacos and fish skewers. Dishes people on vacation want to see. We make sure our grilled mahi is caught local. Our calamari is great and our fish and chips is a huge success.” When the Johnstons purchased the old Pupu Lounge they decided to shut it down and start with a fresh liquor license. The application process means they won’t have liquor until next year but they quickly shifted gears by adding brunch to their menu. Sushi is coming up, too. “When we finally decided to do the restaurant we had to figure out our menu,” said Johnston. “I always like fish and chips and so does everyone else. Then we thought how are we going to do it? Panko crusted or beer batter? Heavy or light? We decided to do big pieces of ono or mahi and we went with mahi, in tempura batter.” Their BYOB brunch has scrumptious,

savory offerings like a seafood omelette, spiral ham or bacon with eggs, loco moco and fried rice. But it’s all about the calamari here. They lightly bread it in a special seasoned flour, deep fry it until it’s crispy, then toss it in a kung pau sauce with peanuts and green onion and serve it over a pineapple cole slaw. It’s so good. I asked Chef Thomas Bonnette about the inspiration for his dishes. “Everything here is made in house,” said Bonnette. “Handmade roasted kalua pork, and huli chicken. I grew up on the Big Island and I have a lot of local food influence. I like to play with Asian ingredients–I really like that. I use a lot of local flavor, but kick it up a notch. My loco moco–you will never have another one like it, I promise you this. I use veal demi as the base for the gravy. There is no powder. It’s very expensive to make, but people are addicted to the flavor. I’m looking at getting beef from Kauai–it’s hard to get local Maui beef now. If you’ve ever had Kauai Makaweli beef, it’s phenomenal.” As if on cue, a couple finishing their lunch interrupted my conversation with Bonnette to say how delicious the food was before they left. “It’s one of these things,” Bonnette said after they left. “I have worked for Roy Yamaguchi, Peter Merriman, Sam Choy, you know all of these big names. I have been in the right spot at the right time. It’s really validating my own chef style. It’s retribution for me. Here I am, 25 years later, making food everyone wants to eat.” The Ohana Seafood Bar & Grill is offering a free appetizer with the purchase of two entrees for first-time customers. You’re welcome to bring your own booze with no corkage fee. ■

argaret Cho has championed many political causes in her life but she’s best known as a comedian who challenges the status quo on women, families, race and sexuality. Her latest PsyCHO Tour promises to have more hilarious antics from her Korean Mommy character as well as her being a selfproclaimed fag hag and bisexual. Fans get to both see the funny and serious side of Cho by keeping up on her Twitter feed, where she isn’t shy about sounding off. In fact, she recently launched a #marrymemargaret campaign in which you can sign up to get married by her on stage during her show (yes, she’s a licensed officiant). We tracked her down in Florida to find out how the tour’s going and if she’s already lined up a couple for her appearance on Saturday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center: MAUITIME: You are marrying people on stage in your tour in the #marrymemargaret competition. Why are you doing this? Where have you married couples so far? will you be doing one on Maui? MARGARET CHO: I don’t have couples for Maui and I need one. I was one of the early champions for marriage equality and I want to celebrate the hard won victory with everyone! Ok, so couples tweet hashtag #marrymemargaret to line that up on Maui. 'Truth' It lets us experience Rathergate in convenient movie form ★★★★★ Rated R / 121 Min.

T

he 60 Minutes scandal of 2004, dubbed “Rathergate,” is now a motion picture, ironically titled Truth. The film depicts how Rather and his team investigated and reported a story on President George W. Bush’s military record, which had sketchy source material and a few tell-tale flaws (the superscript button on our keyboards suddenly had their day in the sun). The controversy resulted in some of those involved being fired, though “Rathergate” wound up more a shakedown on Rather himself than everything wrong with the story. Considering how the film is blatantly in the corner of Rather and his team, a more fitting title would have been Bias. I mean that as a criticism as well as an indication of how the film plays, though I’m not condemning the film. In fact, while it takes time to get cooking, it offers some of the strongest movie moments of any late 2015 release. Truth may be more “infotainment” than worthy of a 60 Minutes profile but it asks the right questions, explores what professional integrity and news reporting

should be and offers an editorial that may be slanted but isn’t entirely off base. Truth stars Robert Redford as Dan Rather and Cate Blanchett as Mary Mapes, the producer of 60 Minutes. Topher Grace, Dennis Quaid and Elisabeth Moss play the investigators working for Mapes. This is truly the Hollywood version of this story and plays like a Rather-approved defense of himself and those involved. James Vanderbilt, who wrote the extraordinary screenplay for David Fincher’s Zodiac, authored this as well and makes his directorial debut. His film lacks style but it’s full of snap, a handful of great scenes and is always entertaining. Redford gives, at best, a mild impersonation of Rather, allowing only a slight vocal inflection and a clunky hairdo to invoke the man. Instead, his movie star charisma conveys the warmth and luster of a well liked living legend. Blanchett, one of the best actresses working today, has portrayed driven, plucky and talented women before but her take on Mapes is standout. Blanchett is sometimes over the top but that’s likely the fault of the screenplay, which is always engaging but never subtle. Mapes comes across as driven, frustrating, talented and flawed, which

Why yes, I did watch the Muppet News Guy to prepare for this role.

is both a rich opportunity for Blanchett to paint her varying shades and for some needed contrast to how the movie portrays Rather like the Yoda of CBS. Grace has a scene, late in the film, where his character makes a spectacle of himself and accuses CBS of hypocrisy. It’s the best work he’s done on film. Other great moments belong to Bruce Greenwood, playing the head of CBS, and Dermot Mulroney, as Mapes professional opponent who interrogates her late in the film. Dennis Quaid and Stacey Keach provide colorful character turns, though Elisabeth Moss’ role gets shuffled to the background and mostly forgotten (it seems as though she were edited out of the film’s second hour). For all the obvious narrative favoritism, the biggest problem isn’t that the film

picks sides, but the music that accompanies it. Composer Brian Tyler, who mostly writes film scores for CGI-heavy action and comic book movies, is absolutely the wrong person to have provided music for this film. The music is spell-everything-out and often odds with what the scene is about. Broadcast News and the vastly underrated Shattered Glass are the still the best of recent films depicting how reporters fall prey to personal opinion and shaping “a great story” in the name of professional journalism. Truth is biased in a way that is sometimes refreshing (it’s not afraid of naming names and pointing fingers), though it does show the flaws and glaring journalistic mistakes made.Yet, if you think this is the kind of movie that portrays Rather as a twinkly eyed symbol of all that is profound about journalism, you’d be right. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

You know what you need in your life right now? A Virgo. A Virgo will show up at your place, water the plants, wash the moldy dishes in the sink, open the windows, and generally help you get your shit together by taking care of all the stuff that was holding you back. Chances are, you already have a Virgo in your life who’s more than willing to do all this for you, if you just give them a chance. Go ahead; you need that kind of nurture and support at the moment. But don’t forget: at some point you’ve got to give something back, or it’s just not fair. I’m telling you, point blank, because the poor generous Virgo never will. Do right by them.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Here’s the problem: you see a potential true love across a room. Your eyes lock, hearts pound—then you get nervous and look (or run!) away. Oh, shit. I feel for you, especially because sometimes this means you never see the person again, and consequently spend months (or years) wondering what might have been. That Missed Connection crap sucks. I can’t retrain a lifetime of habit for you–but you can, and this is a good week to start. Don’t fear intensity. It’s exactly what you want, even if it’s shocking and scary. When it presents itself, run towards it, for goodness’ sake, not away.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Everyone remembers how and when they met you. You make a striking first impression–for good or ill– every time. Usually, you manage to come off as the likeable, optimistic, and friendly person you are–but if someone catches you during one of your rare bad moods or on an off day, you have a hell of a time burning off the nasty persona you’ve seared into their minds–assuming they even give you a chance. Hey, you can’t do much about occasionally sinking into unsociable depths, but you can keep from drowning down there. All that’s required, at least this week, is persistence. Attempt to prove to the one(s) you gave the wrong impression that that’s not who you really are, and don’t quit until you have. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

The first time you have sex is often painful, embarrassing, or both. But it gets, generally, easier and better as you go. This is true of a lot of other things, including the venture you’ve recently embarked upon. Don’t dismiss it just because your first time sucked. Where would you be if you’d made the same decision about sex? It’s one of those learning-curve situations. You just haven’t gotten the hang of it yet. You’ll see, it’ll get better–so much so that pretty soon, if you persist, it’ll be one of your favorite things. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

The problem with exerting such a high degree of control over your environs is it makes you a bit lonely, doesn’t it? The alternative–letting someone in–is akin to simply allowing chaos to sweep through and wreak havoc on all your careful organization. Ironically, you’ve done all this work to make room for someone else–only to find, such a long time after you began, that no one fits perfectly into the space you’ve made. This week it may come to a head, and a decision must be made between preserving the reality you’ve so carefully spun or honoring the intention with which you began spinning it.

I picture you knee-deep at the edge of a turbulent ocean. One part of you is excited by the vigor of the six-foot waves and the potential fun they represent, while another is fearful of their danger. So you stand there, paralyzed, just getting cold, not really enjoying the water, nor relaxing on the beach soaking up sun. You see where I’m going with this, right? Your inability to make and stick to a decision at the moment is treating you to the worst of both worlds. I don’t know which is best, either, but enough is enough. I say just choose and make the best of whatever happens next; it’s bound to be better than what’s happening now. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

During the early 17th century in the Netherlands, tulips were the shit. A singly bulb of a rare variety could command a year’s salary. Anyone who was anyone needed the hottest tulips. This ridiculous economy finally collapsed in 1637, but something very much like it exists today–and you’re supporting it with your misguided participation. By putting value on something that actually doesn’t have much, you’re deluding at least a couple people who can’t afford to lose what they think they’re gaining. Before you accidentally rob them of whatever self-esteem they have left, you’d better think of something worthwhile you can give them to compensate for what you’re taking. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Every Leo wants their own personal Jesus–at least when you’re young and a bit innocent. At that point in your life, you want someone to take care of and save you and listen to your every wish and generally look out for you. “Doesn’t everybody?” you ask. Maybe, but not everybody feels they deserve one. Even if you’ve gotten over this juvenile and unrealistic desire, vestiges remain, and color your relationship with whomever you’re most intimate with. This week, concentrate on not allowing this fantasy to eclipse your relationship’s reality, as it has in the past. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Right now I’m looking at a lovely hippy cliche: a VW bus painted with blue skies and bright yellow sunflowers. I wouldn’t be surprised, however, if this was the sole abode of a Pisces CEO worth millions. You’re all about these shocking contrasts lately, and while folks like me might take them in delighted stride, others are a little less resilient, and apt to be put off or frightened. Therefore, mystery’s your ally this week. I’m not talking about lying or misleading anyone; just let your idiosyncrasies unfold slowly, instead of delivering them all in one electrifying surge.

tattoos by Rachel G

Occasionally, you revert to your least evolved self, where what those you know think of you is more important than what you think of yourself, as if the degree of effect you have on the world around you reflects your value as a person. In these moments a tear-stained letter or a gold ring mean more than all your past achievements and future aspirations put together. Wanting the world to act as your mirror is nothing to feel bad about–we all need validation at times. But letting yourself get stuck when you don’t get exactly what you desire when you desire it–well, I hope you find that as unacceptable as I do.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You possess a singularly focused energy that either inspires people or fills them with smug (deluded) feelings of superiority. It strikes some as laughably simplistic to charge straight ahead at full velocity like you do. But it fills others with awe. Why such polarized reactions, you wonder? Darling, to have people respond to you in a more moderate way, you’ve got to occupy some kind of middle ground, instead of living on the radical edges of whatever landscape you’ve chosen. But is that really what you want? Or might it be better to simply get used to people either loving or despising you, and leave it at that?

When you overcome your reluctance to venture out into the spotlight and potentially make a fool of yourself, you don’t do it in half-measures. In fact, you’re downright disappointed if you’re not subsequently called out for an encore or three. That’s your style; you might drag your feet on the way there, but once you’re in, you’re all in. Unfortunately, your unwillingness to leap without looking is causing angst and worry in someone you know and love–could you spare them a little reassurance? Make sure they get that you’re just waiting to be certain or until you have no other choice, and that you may not do things quickly, but you also don’t do them halfway.
