Rep. Gabbard

REPRESENTATIVE TULSI GABBARD VOTES FOR CONTROVERSIAL AUTO LENDING BILL There’s this Nov. 20 Huffington Post story that’s getting shared around social media. It carries the incendiary title “Meet The 88 Democrats Who Just Voted To Enable Racial Discrimination In Car Buying,” and it packs quite a punch. The story concerns House Resolution 1737, which is a very simple bill that negates a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) bulletin from 2013 that helps ensure auto lenders don’t discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion, age and so on. The bill passed the House of Representatives on Nov. 18 by a vote of 332 to 96. As the Huffington Post story noted, 88 Democrats voted for it. One of those Democrats was Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who represents Hawaii’s 2nd District (she was also one of the bill’s co-sponsors). This is problematic for at least two big reasons. First, and most importantly, because auto lenders in this nation have great power to discriminate when providing loans. The CFPB bulletin from 2013 makes this explicitly clear: “The supervisory experience of the CFPB confirms that some indirect auto lenders have policies that allow auto dealers to mark up lender-established buy rates and that compensate dealers for those markups in the form of reserve (collectively, ‘markup and compensation policies’),” states the bulletin. “Because of the incentives these policies create, and the discretion they permit, there is a significant risk that they will result in pricing disparities on the basis of race, national origin, and potentially other prohibited bases.” Racist car loan policies run against every civil rights ideal you can name. For this reason, the CFPB bulletin urged the imposition of “controls on deal markup and compensation policies,” “monitoring and addressing the effects of [compensation] policies” and “eliminating dealer discretion to mark up buy rates.”

The last paragraph of the bulletin is especially pointed: “The CFPB will continue to closely review the operations of both depository and non-depository indirect auto lenders, utilizing all appropriate regulatory tools to assess whether supervisory, enforcement, or other actions may be necessary to ensure that the market for auto lending provides fair, equitable, and nondiscriminatory access to credit for consumers.” According to the Huffington Post story, this didn’t sit well with banks and auto dealers, which lobbied intensely for HR 1737. Now you’d think that opposition to the bill from groups like the NAACP, the Urban League and National Council of La Raza would be enough to sway progressives like Rep. Gabbard. But apparently not. Look, we like Gabbard. She’s very liberal on social issues and environmental matters, and her extensive military experience has led her to provide valuable insight into U.S. foreign policy–especially in matters of war. So why the vote for HR 1737, which is nothing more than a big wet kiss on the cheek of big banks and auto dealers? Especially when, on Mar. 7 of this year, she said

this on the 50th anniversary of the “bloody Sunday” protest march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama: “We remember that the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice, but only when we all stand up and speak out against bigotry and discrimination,” said Gabbard. “As a nation, we must honor the memory of those courageous souls who marched on Selma, by continuing their work, and living aloha–treating all people with respect, compassion, and love. While times have changed, unfortunately we still see examples of bigotry, harassment, and discrimination in our country. Let this important day be a reminder that it is imperative that we understand and uphold the importance of protecting these sacred civil rights and equal treatment for all.” Those are wonderful and welcome words, but they conflict with Gabbard’s voting for HR 1737. As for explaining Rep. Gabbard’s vote, her spokesperson finally got back to me on Nov. 27 with the statement below. It’s somewhat lengthy, but I’ll reprint it in full: “I have been a strong advocate for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and have supported their work throughout my time in Congress,” Gabbard said. “On this issue, I heard from many Hawai‘i auto dealership owners who expressed frustration and concern about this particular CFPB rule and the lack of information on what caused it, how they are to comply with it, and the unintended negative consequences it would have on our communities. I requested the details and analysis CFPB took into account before issuing this guidance, but received no response. “That’s why I joined 54 of my Democratic colleagues, including 16 members of the Congressional Black Caucus or Congressional Hispanic Caucus, in co-sponsoring HR1737, a bipartisan bill that would ensure that CFPB regulations related to auto loans would be transparent, allow a public

comment period, and would share information about why the regulation is necessary and the impact it will have. This legislation only affects indirect lenders, such as auto dealers and community banks, and would allow CFPB to continue to do its job, while engaging the community in the process. “I support CFPB’s work to prevent discrimination, which should not be tolerated in any form. But this policy would actually have a negative impact on all consumers, including minorities, by restricting access to credit and eliminating the buyer’s ability to receive a discounted auto loan. The Department of Justice’s Civil Rights division is committed to protecting consumers from discrimination, and the Congressional Budget Office has stated that this legislation will not in any way inhibit enforcement of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act.” This sounds great, but it’s also pretty much exactly the line taken by organizations representing auto dealers (for instance, a recent op-ed from the National Automobile Dealers Association president also states that HR 1737 would make things more “transparent”). Their idea was to turn the issue around from racially motivated lending practices to robbing minorities of discounted loans. The reality is different. The bipartisan nature of HR 1737 notwithstanding, a large coalition of civil rights groups opposed HR 1737. On Nov. 17 of this year, a coalition of 24 organizations that included the NAACP, the National Urban League, the A. Philip Randolph Institute and the Center for Women Policy Studies issued a statement denouncing HR 1737. Their reasons stemmed directly from a history of discrimination–a history that compelled the CFPB to act: “In the mid-1990s, a series of lawsuits were filed against the largest auto finance companies in the country alleging discrimination,” says the statement. “The data from those lawsuits showed that borrowers of color were twice as likely to have their loans marked up, and paid markups twice as large as similarly situated white borrowers with similar credit ratings. “Because of that history, and with current data showing continued discrimination, the CFPB has issued guidance telling lenders that they could eliminate the risk of fair lending violations by paying compensation to dealers in ways that do not involve manipulations of the interest rate. If, however, lenders chose to continue allowing dealers to increase the interest rate for compensation, then the lender would need to take steps to ensure that discrimination does not occur.” No, HR 1737 is still a bad bill, regardless of the bipartisan support it received in Congress. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

The Maui County Council’s Water Resources Committee was scheduled to take up the old “Show me the water” law during their Dec. 2, 2015 meeting (MauiTime went to press at the same time as the meeting). According to a Nov. 27, 2015 press release from the Maui County Council’s media office, the reason was to discuss a new bill–introduced by Councilmember Mike Victorino–that would repeal the old law. “The policy is often mentioned in discussions as one of the main reasons why affordable housing has not been built,” Councilmember Gladys Baisa said in the press release. “This review will provide a chance to evaluate what the policy’s true impact has been. I strongly encourage concerned members of the community to testify, especially those affected by the policy.” The “Show me the water” law passed in 2007 in an attempt to bring residential development under control by forcing developers to prove they had a long-term water source before the county would authorize any new home construction. The result, according to Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa, has been a “severe shortage” of affordable housing in the county. “The ‘Show me the water’ bill, the affordable housing bill, killed it,” he said at an Oct. 20, 2015 Maui Redevelopment Agency meeting at the Good Shepherd Church in Wailuku. “We have a 3,000-unit deficit. We have to change some of the laws–it takes two years to get something built.” Victorino had previously pushed for its repeal back in 2011, but the Council only eased up on the law a bit.

tough. He tore at life, biting off huge chunks. Everything he did, everything he felt, was bigger than with most people. He was a talented artist–responsible for a few years worth of MauiTime’s covers, layouts and ads–a brave adventurer and a good friend. He was 48 years old. “Travis was an artist in the highest sense of the word—whatever he touched turned to art,” states the obituary his wife Lisa Marie Le Donne provided to me. “It could be a paintbrush, computer mouse, pencil, groceries, or gardening tools; his eyes saw the details and wonders in everything and his hands brought unmatched beauty into the world… In lieu of flowers he would have loved for you to give your money to the next homeless guy you meet or better yet, pick him up and share a meal with him.” What sticks most in my mind is the time back in 2008 when he and I went night kayaking. It was just a brief expedition for me, no more than an hour or two, but in the subsequent story I wrote about it (“Night Kayaking,” May 29, 2008–which was one of the last MauiTime articles I did before taking off on what became a threeyear hiatus), I think I did a decent job of capturing some of Travis’ spirit: “If you haven’t already figured it out, Travis is a true adventurer. He’s gone all over the world and experienced all kinds of wonders. Once, at night, he launched out of Makena Landing and paddled all the way to Molokini and back—a total trip of seven miles. He was just about to the islet when he realized his kayak was taking on more water than he should. He made it back to Makena, but apparently just barely. “‘Paddling out was tough, but paddling back was easy,’ he told me. ‘I mean, if you stop, you die.’” Anyway, that’s how I remember him. Rest in peace, man.

News Of The Weird THE PATIENT WILL SEE YOU NOW

THE CONTINUING CRISIS

Professional patients now help train wouldbe doctors, especially in the most delicate and dreaded of exams (gynecological and prostate), where a becalming technique improves outcomes. One “teaching associate” of Eastern Virginia Medical School told The Washington Post in September that the helpers act as “enthusiastic surgical dummies” to 65 medical colleges, guiding rookie fingers through the trainer’s own private parts. The prostate associate might helpfully caution, “No need for speed here,” especially since he will be bending over for as many as nine probings a day. A gynecological teaching associate, mentoring the nervous speculum-wielder, might wittily congratulate pupils on having a front-row sight line the “GTA” will never witness: an up-close view of her own cervix.

U.S. and European entrepreneurs offer extreme “games” in which liabilitywaiving “players” volunteer for hours of kidnapping, pain and death threats, but the cult-like, under-the-radar “McKamey Manor” in Southern California (said to have a waiting list of 27,000) is notable for the starkness of its threats of brutality -- and the absence of any “safe word” with which a suddenly reluctant player can beg off. (Only Russ McKamey himself decides if a player has had enough.) The “product” is “100 percent fear,” he said. “We’re good at it,” he told London’s The Guardian in an October dispatch from San Diego (whose reporter overheard one of McKamey’s thugs promise, “I’m going to tear that girl (player) apart” and “No one is leaving with eyebrows today”).

AMERICAN SHARIA

CAMPUS CRISIS

U.S. courts increasingly allow customers to sign away state and federal rights by agreeing to contracts providing private arbitration for disputes rather than access to courts–even if the contract explicitly requires only religious resolutions rather than secular, constitutional ones. A November New York Times investigation examined contracts ranging from Scientology’s requirement that fraud claims by members be resolved only by Scientologists–to various consumer issues from home repairs to real estate sales limited to dockets of Christian clerics.

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS At a ceremony in Kabul in November, prominent Afghan developer Khalilullah Frozi signed a $95 million contract to build an 8,800-unit township and was, according to a New York Times dispatch, toasted for his role in the country’s economic rebirth. However, at nightfall, Frozi headed back to prison to resume his 15-year sentence for defrauding Kabul Bank of nearly $1 billion in depositors’ money. Because he remains one of Afghanistan’s elite, arrangements were made for him to work days but spend his nights in prison (in comfortable quarters). Said one Western official, laconically, “[I]f you have stolen enough money, you can get away with it.”

CULTURAL DIVERSITY Before the terrorist murders gripped Paris, President Francois Hollande and Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani had been trying to arrange a formal dinner during Rouhani’s planned visit to the city to celebrate the two countries’ role in the recent accord limiting Iran’s nuclear development. France’s RTL radio news reported that “dinner” is apparently more vexing than “nuclear weaponry”–as Rouhani demanded an alcohol-free meal, which was nixed by Hollande, who insisted that the French never dine without wine.

In October, the student newspaper of Toronto’s Ryerson University reported a mighty scandal that upset the student body: The school’s executive offices’ restrooms routinely supply two-ply toilet paper while most other campus buildings offer only one-ply. Following up on the hard-hitting Ryerson Eyeopener’s expose, The Canadian Press noted that the universities of Guelph, Ottawa and Toronto comfort all toilet-users’ bottoms the same.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Nicholas Allegretto, 23, was convicted of shoplifting in Cambridge, England, in October (in absentia, because he is still at large). The prosecutor knows Allegretto is his man because, shortly after the February theft, police released a surveillance photo of Allegretto leaving the store with the unpaid-for item, and Allegretto had come to a police station to complain that the suddenly public picture made him look guilty. In fact, he claimed, he intended to pay for the item but had gotten distracted (and besides, he added, his body language often looks somewhat “dodgy,” anyway).

LOWERING THE BAR IN ZERO TOLERANCE The six-year-old son of Martha Miele was given an automatic three-day out-ofschool suspension at Our Lady of Lourdes in Cincinnati in October after, emulating actions of his favorite Power Rangers characters, he pretended to shoot a bow and arrow at another student. Principal Joe Crachiolo was adamant, insisting that he has “no tolerance for any real, pretend or imitated violence.” An exasperated Martha Miele confessed she was at a loss about how a six-year-old boy is supposed to block out the concept of a super-hero fighter (and instead imagine, say, a superhero counselor?). ■

SAVE OLOWALU!

A

STORY BY: ANTHONY PIGNATARO PHOTOS BY: CHRIS ARCHER

A few weeks ago the state Land Use Commission LUC met at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center to discuss the final environmental impact statement (EIS) for Olowalu Town, a massive development project pushed by Bill Frampton and Dave Ward. The project is billed as a “complete community”–containing its own housing, public infrastructure, recreation, commercial development and open space. The LUC didn’t decide the fate of the EIS (or the project), but will meet again at the MACC on Dec. 7 to take it up again. Given that the project has been in development for the last decade, there’s a considerable cache of documents that outline more than a few concerns. In fact, they catalog a very long list of pretty substantial problems. While the list below is by no means a comprehensive list of everything that’s wrong with the proposed Olowalu Town–that would take something approximating a second environmental impact statement–it does include a lot of issues that might doom the plan. For more information, check out SaveOlowalu.org.

1 2 3 4 5

Olowalu Town will include approximately 1,500 homes. That means about 4,000 residents would live there. Olowalu’s current population, as of the 2010 census, is 80.

The project is so big that it will require the relocation of Honoapiilani Highway as it travels through Olowalu. Though billed as a way to address Maui’s housing need, the project

10 DECEMBER 3, 2015

will actually build too much housing for West Maui. “The project will exceed the [Planning] Department’s estimated housing need and provide a rationale for exceeding the demand,” Planning Director Will Spence said in an April 17, 2012 letter to developers Bill Frampton and Heidi Bigelow.

6

Developers bill the project as a “Smart Location” under LEED Neighborhood Development standards. This simply means that it encourages the building of neighborhoods near already existing public

transportation. The county’s Planning Department took issue with this, in its April 17, 2012 letter to Frampton and Bigelow. “Please justify how this project, located four miles away from the edge of Lahaina, meets ‘Smart Location’ for LEED Neighborhood Development standards,” Spence wrote. In their response written three years later, developers Frampton and Ward denied that this was a problem and insisted that “Olowalu has historically been used for housing.”

7

The Draft EIS, issued in 2012, states that “As recently as the 1930’s,

Olowalu was a thriving plantation town.” According to the county Planning Department, this isn’t even close to true. “Throughout its history, Olowalu was at most a ‘camp’ and at most a ‘village,’” Spence wrote in his April 17, 2012 letter. “In 1930, census-taker Kenichi Takayama recorded the population of Olowalu as being 447 persons.” Spence helpfully offered to Frampton and Bigelow that the county has “extensive information about West Maui’s camps, villages, and towns, including

According to county Planning Director Will Spence (who noted this in his 2012 letter), the project exists in a “known tsunami and flood hazard area.” In their 2015 response to Spence, the developers said that their “proposed drainage improvements” would “reduce the potential for flooding.”

17

Nene–an endangered species–are found in Olowalu, yet the EIS (as the County of Maui noted in 2012) contains no explanation as to how developers will protect the species. In 2015, the developers responded to the county’s concerns by reiterating that their project wouldn’t harm the birds.

18

Lahaina, Olowalu, Puukolii, and Ukumehame if you would like further clarification.”

8

Most of the maps included in the EIS aren’t to scale. “[A]almost all maps say “Not To Scale” which makes it difficult to determine distances among and between uses,” the State Office of Planning (OP, which advises the LUC) said in a Nov. 17, 2015 letter to the LUC. “The Conceptual Master Plan map in particular, should be to scale.”

9

The public has never given a chance to review the developers’ complete Traffic Impact Analysis Report, which the state OIP told the developers to prepare back in 2012. “Given the significance of the issue and extensive revisions made following the “Preliminary” TIAR, the public should be given the opportunity to review this final TIAR,” the state Office of Planning said in their Nov. 17, 2015 letter. Archaeological studies and surveys “for the entire Olowalu area were not included in the Draft FEIS,” stated the OP on Nov. 17, 2015. This is concerning because “new sites and cultural material have been found” in recent surveys and the State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) “has not reviewed and commented on the Draft EIS,” according to the OP’s Nov. 17, 2015 letter.

10

11

The project will use a lot of water. The EIS approximates the water use at about 750,000 million gallons per day (gpd). But five years ago, the county’s Department of Water Supply put the estimate at closer to “between approximately 900,000 and a little more than 2 million gpd, according to system standards,” according to an Aug. 5, 2010 letter from thenWater Supply Director Jeffrey Eng to Colleen Suyama, a consultant who was preparing the Olowalu EIS. In that letter, Eng also dryly noted that “as of 2008, the sustainable yield set by the Commission on Water Resource Management for the Olowalu aquifer is 2 million gallons per day.”

12

The project will draw water from state lands. “Source of surface

water is state lands,” states a handwritten note on a Mar. 20, 2012 memo from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. “Applicants need to work towards getting a water license and license to access state lands.” More than three years later, on Oct. 26, 2015, Colleen Suyama replied, stating that “We further acknowledge that the source of surface water is State lands. As required, the applicant will obtain a water license and lease to access State lands.”

13

The project will also consume a great deal of agricultural land. And the County of Maui doesn’t like that. “[T]he DEIS inadequately justifies the removal of 621 acres of agricultural land, including 121 acres of Prime Agricultural Land,” Spence wrote in 2012. “Suggesting that these 621 acres are a small percent of Maui’s Agricultural lands neglects the fact that these are prime lands that demand special protection.”

14

What’s more, the lands the developers have set aside for ag are some of the lowest quality in the area. “[T]he majority–80 percent–of the Master Plan Site Area has ‘A’ and ‘B’ classified soils, while about 19 percent of the site is of the lowest, least productive classification ‘E,’” Spence noted in his April 17, 2012 letter. “It is noted that this area where the least productive AG soil exists is the area surrounding the Olowalu Stream–the precise area where the Master Plan proposes to retain as AG land within the Olowalu Cultural Reserve.” In their response submitted three years later on Oct. 26, 2015, Olowalu Town developers Frampton and Ward argued that “farming is not the sole means of improving or increasing the long-term sustainability of Hawaii’s economy” and that “providing homes” could also do wonders. They developers also noted that greenhouses and hydroponic farming are making great strides today.

The coral reef off Olowalu is one of the healthiest on Maui–perhaps in the entire state. Biologist Pauline Fiene noted this in her 2012 comments on the EIS. “We don’t get to decide where our special natural places are on Maui,” she wrote. “Nature decides that. All we can decide is where our development is going to be. And if there were a reef on the whole island that cries out for respite and exemption from urban development above it, it would be Olowalu. It has developed over centuries and there is literally nothing to replace it.” For this reason, Fiene noted, she was “baffled” as to why a project on this scale was even being considered for Olowalu.

19

In 2015, the project developers reiterated, despite the concerns of Spence and biologists like Fiene, that Olowalu Town “is not expected to adversely affect the reef environment and nearshore water quality.” Big wave surfer and former Maui County Ocean Safety supervisor Archie Kalepa didn’t buy it. “If they develop Olowalu into a community and a hotel, the effect it will have on that ecosystem–the waterfront and the reefs–will be such a great impact that it will socially ruin that reef,” he said. “When I say ‘socially,’ I’m talking about the fishes, the sharks, all the marine life that exist… Olowalu’s one of the few places we have left. I don’t think that from an environmental standpoint that it’s a good idea for us to develop that area.”

20

Though the EIS notes that Olowalu’s irrigation system is “quite dated, with portions of it built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,” it neither identifies the system’s location on its maps nor acknowledges that its age may qualify it for listing on the National Register of Historic Places–which Spence said in 2012 may “have an adverse impact on this resource,” as it would require additional protections during the project’s development.

21

The EIS, Spence noted, contains no specific information on how the project will impact police, fire and solid waste services. “It is insufficient to merely state that the hospital or police facilities are located a certain distance from Olowalu, or that a fire station site will be discussed for possible inclusion in the public/quasipublic area,” Spence noted in 2012.

22

Though Olowalu sits astride the only road between Lahaina and Ma‘alaea, the county Planning Department noted that the project EIS doesn’t evaluate the project’s traffic impacts (or what might mitigate those impacts) to those two towns.

23

The project also includes 375,000 square feet of commercial development. To put this figure into perspective, the new Target in Kahului covers 140,000 square feet.

24

In 2012, Spence noted that the project EIS “underestimates” costs to county in terms of police, fire, civil defense, housing and human concerns, public works and planning. It also underestimates costs to the state in terms of education, medical, prison and highway services.

25

Based many of these concerns (as well as others), the state Office of Planning concluded in its Nov. 17, 2015 letter that the LUC not approve the Olowalu Town EIS. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

15

Though they included no detailed protection plan in their EIS, developers insist that “Olowalu Stream will not be altered during implementation of the Master Plan.”

FOUR SEASONS WAILEA OFFERS KAMA‘AINA SEASON FOR THE FIRST TIME

Fifteen Oceanfront Acres of Fun

W

mentary activities for travelers of all sizes and passions. The morning outrigger canoe paddling is just one of their adventures that I’d put on the must-try list. After a quick briefing with the steersman, you paddle out for a little jaunt around the Wailea coastline in the Four Seasons canoe while the ocean is still crystalline. They even bring masks so you can do a little snorkeling and fish-spotting. You can reserve a seat on any of the boats leaving from 7am to 10am, and there are five trips every morning. Other free Four Seasons resort activities include fitness, scuba diving, tennis and Hawaiian crafts. If fitness is your thing, daily ocean view exercise classes start at 7:45am daily, with yoga, meditation, pilates, zumba, SUP yoga and spin. You can also take advantage of their 24-hour fitness machines that include cybex, elliptical, stairmaster, treadmills and bikes. The beach walk fronting the resort is also one of my favorite places to run or walk, and it runs from the Marriott to Polo Beach. Beach time is really cushy when you do it Four Seasons-style. Free snorkel gear is available to check out the reef. Four Seasons attendants will also set up a beach-side camp for you with an umbrella, chairs and table (then they come around with ice water and mini muffins). While they do not have cocktails and food service on the beach, they have a little stand nearby for snacks like bagels and ice cream. If the sand isn’t your thing, you can always relax under one of their 58 cabanas. They are also complimentary, and poolside attendants can get you set up with chair covers, towels and spritzes from the fountain pool to the waterfall pool. Up at the Serenity adult pool, cabanas are decked out and designed in Missoni. The

Four Seasons is also home to one of the top rated spas in the nation. The spa is offering kama`aina $129 massages or anti-aging facials. They’re also known for their wellness treatments, hydra facials and i-lipo body shaping treatments, but now botox and juvederm are available, too. In 2015, Four Seasons took over management of the Salon, and they’re now offering $55 signature pedicures or blowouts for Kama‘aina Season. The three restaurants at the Four Seasons are also catering to kama‘aina with Wolfgang Puck’s Spago and Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante offering two-for-one entrees, while Duo Steak and Seafood will take 20 percent off your entire bill. Other evening entertainment, food and drinks can be enjoyed at the Lobby Bar. Also fun in the evening is their Game Room, where we enjoyed video games, big screen TVs, foosball, ping-pong, pool tables, shuffle board and board games until the wee hours. “For many who live here in Hawaii, the holidays represent the busiest time of the year,” Weitzel said. “Almost all residents are inundated with work responsibilities. It gives us great pleasure to open our doors to our extended ‘ohana during the pre-holiday rush, so they can remember exactly why they live here.” Kama‘aina Season is available at the Four Seasons Wailea through Dec. 19, with prices starting at $299 with no resort fees. To make a reservation, call 808-874-8000 (Hawaii state ID required). ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/lifestyle

hen Four Seasons Wailea opened in 1990, it was one of those rare places Maui residents rarely glimpsed unless you worked there. Now, for the first time, they’ve opened their doors with what they call a Kama‘aina Season. “So many of our fellow kama‘aina spend their days providing service for our island’s visitors, and we are excited to turn the tables, to open our doors to our extended ‘ohana so that we can pamper them,” said General Manager Jean Claude Weitzel. “The Golden Rule, to treat people as you would like to be treated, has always been at the core of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, and our employees live and breathe this philosophy. The combination of the Four Seasons service culture and the spirit of aloha promise many memorable moments for our guests. We are simply delighted to be able to welcome kama‘aina to experience the resort.” They make pushing the pamper button at Four Seasons easy. As soon as you step foot on the resort, the staff immediately sets about making everything as comfortable as possible. When you first arrive, for instance, rather than stand in a queue, you’re asked to have a seat on the lobby couches and refresh with ginger lemonade and cold towels while they get you checked in. Then escorts take you to your room. It’s like they don’t want you to lift a finger. The rooms are some of the largest on the island–a minimum 600 square feet, with sprawling verandas that overlook the ocean and spacious closets and bathrooms. As far as I’m concerned, a staycation could be spent entirely in their beautiful rooms, but my nine-year-old disagrees. Luckily the resort has plenty of compli-

upside of staying by the pool is taking advantage of their gourmet menu available from the resort chefs as well as cocktail, beer and wine service. Families staycationing will love the Kids for All Seasons program, which runs daily for guests ages five to 12. Even though my daughter could have stayed with me, she opted to hang out in their cool headquarters with a rock climbing wall, air hockey, movies and crafts. They went on a scavenger hunt around the property and she reported it was a blast. The staff at Kids for All Seasons were really helpful, sending me on my way with a full schedule of where they would be at any given time and the camp counselors’ cell phone numbers. While your kids are enjoying scavenger hunts, it’s prime time for shopping. The Four Seasons has different local artists selling their items everyday in the lobby from 9am to 1pm. I perused Mika McCann’s beautiful handcrafted baskets made from materials she grows on the slopes of Haleakala. The lobby also has an incredible museum quality collection of art to peruse with a self-guided tour. The 22 Knots and Cabana boutiques are setting up special kama‘aina sales for up to 40 to 60 percent off merchandise. You will see hard-to-find-on-Maui brands like Jimmy Choo, Valentino and Lanvin at 22 Knots, while Cabana has the perfect resort wear and beach bohemia mix of local and designer goods like James Perse and Alice + Olivia. Ports has candy, gifts and some cool Tom’s sunglasses which, similar to their shoe line, give the gift of sight to someone in need when you buy them.

IT’S EASY TO FALL IN LOVE WITH FERRARO’S AT THE FOUR SEASONS WAILEA

Executive Chef Craig Dryhurst

F

erraro’s at the Four Seasons Wailea offers a spectacular setting in which to immerse yourself in the creative Italian cuisine of Chef Craig Dryhurst and Sous Chef Marco Calenzo. The restaurant is nestled into the property’s northwest corner, requiring you to take a romantic stroll through the lobby and past their fountain pool under the stars in the evening, or bright azure skies if it’s day. The restaurant does lunch and dinner nightly. The decor is modern but has hints of European influence are seen in the wrought iron furnishings, columns surrounding the bar and sculptures. The pretty warm colors coming from the open fire in the kiawe wood burning oven adds ambiance, and the smells of fresh dough and flatbread baking inside are marvelous. The blanket of stars overhead are the real stunners–that is, until your food arrives. The menu is very cleverly lit up at night, almost like a tablet screen. Since you’re dining by candle and starlight, this proves to be their high tech solution, and makes for fun conversation. The menu starts with antipasti, then moves through primi and secondi. Chef Dryhurst has also designed a Wellness Menu with amazing vegan and vegetarian dishes, and while it doesn’t light up like the other one, it includes some great dining options as well. I started with the crudos of ahi, ono and salmon and the Ferraro’s salad. The crudos is one of my favorite dishes here: simple raw fish, but each fleshy bite is paired with a seasoning to bring out the flavor–ahi with mint and ginger, ono with cucumber celery and meyer lemon and salmon with sweet sour shallot. Ferraro’s endive salad has crunchy hazelnut sprinkled over gooey

dates and pear slices. I like the way bitter and sweet play together in this starter. For primi, I went with the lobster gnocchi sardi. The pastas are housemade by Calenzo, and the gnocchi sardi is a delectable ribbed shell shape. I know you were thinking that gnocchi is a potato dumpling sort of a pasta, right? Well, the Italians are full of surprises. In Sardinia, the gnocchi sardi is short for gnocchetti sardi–a pasta. Regardless, it’s a delicious dish with large chunks of lobster and a creamy sundried tomato vodka sauce. On secondi, their porcini dusted seared ahi was a gorgeous dish. The semi raw filet came on a bed of Swiss chard and fregola pasta. Fregola resembles quinoa, but it’s a tiny rolled pasta also from Sardinia. It takes a big appetite to dine like an Italian with primi and secondi courses following antipasti, but Ferraro’s will let you do it with style (you can also split plates for family members if you wish to share). If you’re eating from the Wellness Menu, the kale strawberry salad is locally sourced and delicious. The Trio of Cauliflower entree is also fabulous, while the Hamakua mushroom fettucini with cashew cream Alfredo sauce will make you wish you were vegan–it’s that good. The mushroom pasta Alfredo is one of those dishes that proves eating vegan can be really filling. At lunch, Ferraro’s menu changes, and the dining room transforms under giant shade umbrellas. You will still see the stone baked pizza, pastas, appetizers with Italian flair. But with lunch entrees they also add sandwiches and some non-Italian entrees. The foccacia bread they serve is wonderful and features in a few of their sandwiches like the grilled mahi. That’s served with your choice of a side, salad, onion rings, fries, grilled veggies or fresh fruit. Wraps are also an option. Ferraro’s keeps the children’s menu the same for lunch and dinner; they have so much to choose from the kids won’t be disappointed. Ferraro’s has a great buy-one-entree-getone free deal for kama‘aina. They also have an 8 Till Late promotion where wine is half off after 8pm, but the two deals cannot be combined. The 8 Till Late deal is also available to everyone, not just kama‘aina. For reservations, call the resort at 808-874-8000. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

The American Dream Idealized ‘Brooklyn’ may be fluff but at least it’s elegant ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 111 Min.

W

hen I drive with my father through Paia, he likes to note how the town looked in the 1960s and names various stores and places of business that are no longer there. In my own way, I share this love of the way Maui used to look and get nostalgic over the places I grew up with that have long since vanished. I sometimes drive around Kahului and glance at places I used to attend, having to remind myself that they aren’t there anymore. I mention this sort of nostalgia, which I suppose is universal, because of the care and beauty taken in crafting the look of the film Brooklyn. Saoirse Ronan stars as Eilis, an Irish woman who moves to New York in search of employment and strives to create a new life for herself. Living in a boardinghouse, she works at a convenience store, and falls in love with an Italian sweetheart, Tony (Emory Cohen). Later, she makes a return visit to Ireland and finds temptation in the form of an interested young man (Domhnall Gleeson). Eilis finds herself with two different worlds

(and two very different but equally interested suitors) to choose from. It’s one thing for director John Crowley to adapt Colm Toibin’s novel as a lovely, charming reflection on a woman’s pilgrimage to 1950’s New York. It’s another thing for the film’s color palette to appear so vibrant, the film’s physical recreation of New York and (briefly) Coney Island come across as gorgeous facsimiles of how The Big Apple is fondly remembered. The look of Brooklyn reflects the idealism of The American Dream, as well as an affection for a time long gone. I haven’t been a fan of Ronan’s work or her movies (save for Byzantium). Here, she conveys Eilis’ vulnerability and gradual, newfound confidence. She’s quite good and, at times, she reminded me of the way Maureen O’Hara could hold the screen in such a captivating manner. Cohen is playing a cliché but he plays Tony with such an uncommon sensitivity that I grew to love the character. Jim Broadbent and Jessica Pare appear far too briefly. Gleeson is to this movie what James Marsden was for The Notebook. Namely, he plays the second act love interest who, let’s face it, is handsome but doesn’t have a real shot at being “the

At least we'll still have the Dodgers

love of her life.” This plot development is fairly predictable, as is much of Brooklyn, but at least Gleeson, to his credit, doesn’t play the role with mustachetwirling smugness the way Marsden did. In fact, Gleeson’s reserved performance is a breath of fresh air from the Italian family scenes, which are a problem. Much of Brooklyn engages with Eilis’ growth in confidence and experiences of self discovery but the scenes that come across as forced are easily with Tony’s colorful, utterly stereotypical ItalianAmerican family. The focus in these scenes are on Tony’s eight year old little brother, played by a hammy young actor, who “performs” like he’s playing Don

Corleone in a school play. I prefer Ron Howard’s far more commercial but richer and just as Hollywoodized Far and Away , which is equally celebratory about the Irish immigration experience. The best moments are small observations: when an Irishman in a New York soup kitchen starts singing, those around him sit quietly, their eyes lost in memories of the past. It’s a beautiful scene. So are the closing scenes, in which Eilis gently guides another young immigrant into the right line at Ellis Island and the tender final reveal. Brooklyn may be fluff and nothing new but it’s been elegantly made and performed with affection. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Wild creatures often have remarkable senses of direction. The Sagittarian internal compass, however, works differently, pointing unerringly towards unfamiliar territory–new and unexplored physical, mental, and spiritual landscapes. Consequently, you tend to steer relationships into whitewater and your own soul into blinding places (both dark and light). In fact, just to please (or keep) them, you occasionally need to ignore that backwards lodestone and head away from your personal frontiers. Do that now: retreat into familiar territory or the next time you venture into the unknown, you’ll be alone. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Capricorns love inevitabilities. Even death, for its sheer unavoidability, is peculiarly satisfying to some members of your tribe. When you’re playing a game, you love the moment when it becomes clear–if only to you–that you’ve got the thing wrapped up, and there’s nothing anybody else can do about it. That’s what you’ve got coming to you this week, you lucky dog: exactly that feeling. Not a victory–not yet–but the route to one. If you play your cards right–which you will, I’m sure–you’ll soon see how you’ve got this one in the bag.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Personally, I think of every skill I acquire as a kind of superpower. Learn a new language, for example, and suddenly you can communicate with millions of people you were cut off from before, and your horizons are expanded as well. But of course you can’t realistically go around trying to acquire skills willy-nilly. Even if you’re so amazing you can learn 13 languages at once without getting confused, you only have so much room in your mental toolbox–and tools you don’t use quickly grow rusty and useless. Opportunities to grow outpace your ability to take advantage of them this week. Pick and choose from them carefully.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Most Pisceans I know are good meditators. In fact, most of my Fish friends spend significant chunks of their time–at least when they’re alone–staring at walls and thinking about nothing. You need periods of concentrated, full-on downtime. Sometimes, because you don’t necessarily consciously pursue some actual meditation practice, you don’t give yourself the quiet stretches you need, and you start to freak. It’s hard to justify laying around doing nothing while you have so many demands on your attention. Nevertheless, for the sake of your own sanity and happiness, this week you must find a way to do just that.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

You have more power to confuse yourself and screw your life up than any five outside influences combined. That may seem obvious to you, but I wonder, because you’ve been giving the shit that’s gone down lately way too much credit for sidetracking you, when it’s actually only a small part of what’s delayed your progress. What is holding you back is just you. Realize (or remember) that, please, so you can just step over or around the real-life obstacles set ahead of you without much trouble. Luckily, you’ll have some help. When someone laughs at your ridiculousness this week, don’t bristle. Laugh along.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

It’s a good week to mobilize the posse, because you need your crowd around you right now. Whatever you’re up to–even if it’s just about having fun– you can’t even begin to accomplish it without your gang. They might need some rallying and inspired pep talks to get going, though. After all, they’ve got all their shit going on, too. If you’re persistent enough (and are willing to make deals and grub favors), they’ll come around, so don’t balk when they dig in their heels. Caving–instead of pushing through their resistance–would be the worst way to set yourself up for the new year, so don’t.

QUIZ understood

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Anyone who habitually answers your questions with questions raises red flags. You want to know what’s up, and interacting with a mirror–despite your reputation for self-centeredness–isn’t that interesting. However, just because someone doesn’t like to be pinned down doesn’t mean they’re evil or even especially flaky. Find a way to discern between those who are underhanded or unreliable, and the few who are simply fascinating unknowable (there’s at least one in this week’s batch) and you’ll be entertained, comforted, and pleased (if a bit confused) all winter long. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Once the room’s been cleaned, the dishes washed, the bills paid–then you can think, relax, and enjoy yourself. Sometimes it’s exceedingly important for you Virgos to bring closure to practical matters before you can allow yourself to embark on flights of fancy, rafts of inspiration, or magic carpet rides. I’m hoping you’ve already done all the boring, practical stuff before this week even began, because I don’t want anything cutting into your fun and playtime. If you haven’t, get that shit done, pronto, so you can enjoy all the good stuff coming your way during the next seven days.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Every Aries, at an early age, learns a secret: if you say something with conviction, perhaps spice it with a few interesting details, people will often believe you. An old boyfriend used to call this habit I had “quoting from The Book of Caeriel.” The problem comes when you start believing your own propaganda, then someone tries to make you resolve it with hard “facts” pertaining to the “real world.” As this is likely to happen this week, in a way you can’t simply ignore, you have a choice: either go batshit insane and ride your sinking ship of made-up crap all the way down, or admit to your misinformation campaign, have a good laugh (partially at your own expense), and move on.

I love it when I get mail from Libras–whether it’s of the hate or love variety. I worry when you don’t express your opinions, Libra. It makes it seem, frequently, that you simply don’t have any, and since those you need (or at least want) to impress this week appreciate bold thoughts and straightforward speech, they might not think too highly of you should you be too bland, unforthcoming, or uncontroversial. It might seem weird to you, but most interesting people would rather you had a strong opinion that they disagreed with than not professing to any position on a given subject. Speak your mind–which might, it goes without saying, involve making it up. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Cancer’s symbol is the Crab, and like that creature, once they get their pincers in someone, they’re unlikely to release them. You do not have quite the same reputation for clinginess, but your infamous stubbornness and persistence can translate into something quite similar this week. I admire your determination, I really do. But sometimes it’s best to recognize that no amount of bullheaded resolve will bend this particular situation to your will. Instead, you must apply that tremendous willpower to a much more difficult task: truly and utterly letting go.

Right now you’re like a room full of electronic components all running from one power outlet. You’ve recently sensed, and started to panic a bit about, the precariousness of your current set-up, only you haven’t been sure how to change it, or even what your options are. Luckily, someone or something you encounter this week is likely to do more than just bring along an extension cord. They can help you rewire the whole place. I suggest you take them up on the offer. You won’t get another chance like this until after you’ve suffered a meltdown. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
