grams for prison personnel.” “States around the country are finding new and innovative ways to address the many problems that plague our criminal justice system,” Gabbard said in her news release. “In Hawai‘i, veteran treatment courts and drug courts are helping to reduce prison crowding and over-criminalization by focusing on rehabilitation and treatment. Similarly, the HOPE model has shown dramatic results in reducing recidivism by implementing a high-intensity supervision probation program. Criminal justice reform is a bipartisan cause, and both the SAFE Act and the Sentencing Reform Act are the kinds of sensible changes that will begin to bring about long overdue criminal justice reform.”

COULD REP. KANIELA ING HELP MAKE DEBT-FREE COLLEGE A REALITY?

At a time when the right-wing in this nation gets energized from politicians who advocate border walls, another Middle Eastern ground invasion and the banning of Muslims from entering the U.S., left-wing candidates and legislators are trying to appeal to voters with a very different idea: debt-free college. Earlier this month, 10 legislators in 10 states said that they’d introduce legislation to make college debt-free for students. According to a Dec. 7 story from Marketplace, “The push is being organized by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which advocates for expanding Social Security, Wall Street regulation, campaign finance regulation and lowering student debt.” Hawaii is one of those 10 states, and the legislation will come from Democratic Rep. Kaniela Ing, who repre-

The United States of America is, more than ever, a prison state. Looking at some numbers just crunched by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Prison Policy Initiative, it’s hard to deny that America has turned incarceration into more than a mere industry–it’s become a pillar of our society. “The American criminal justice system holds more than 2.3 million people in 1,719 state prisons, 102 federal prisons, 2,259 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,283 local jails, and 79 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, immigration detention facilities, civil commitment centers, and prisons in the U.S. territories,” states a new Prison Policy Initiative report released on Dec. 8. “Looking at the big picture requires us to ask if it really makes sense to lock up 2.3 million people on any given day, giving this nation the dubious distinction of having the highest incarceration rate in the world.” We’re not talking about Soviet Russia or communist China here. This is the U.S. And it’s out of control. Congressional Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D– Hawaii, would seem to agree. In fact, she recently announced that she’s supporting two new criminal justice reform bills. “Our criminal justice system today is unsustainable, both for our government and for society. In Hawai‘i, 5,500 inmates were in our correctional system last year, including 1,300 sent to Arizona because of prison overcrowding, and our state spent over $179 million on corrections,” Gabbard said in a Dec. 3 news release. “Across the country, spending on our criminal justice system continues to go up, but over 40% of people released from prison return within 3 years.” Here are the two bills:

drug offenses, reduces the three-strike mandatory life sentence to 25 years, broadens the existing safety valve for low-level drug offenders, and provides judges with greater discretion in determining appropriate sentences while ensuring that serious violent felons do not get released early.” • The SAFE Justice Act: Gabbard’s office says this bill mandates a wide variety of reforms including the following–“restores discretion to judges to determine to what extent manipulated conduct that results from fictitious law enforcement ‘stings’ may be considered in court; eliminates federal criminal penalties for simple drug possession in state jurisdictions; expands eligibility for pre-judgment probation; promotes greater use of probation for lower-level offenders; applies life sentences for drug trafficking only in the most egregious cases; allows eligible offenders to petition for resentencing under new trafficking laws [and] creates mental health and de-escalation training pro-

sents South Maui. “I would not have been able to graduate college if I had not worked part time, aggressively solicited scholarships, and obtained Pell Grants,” Ing said in a Dec. 10 news release from the state House of Representatives. “Neither of my parents graduated from college, so I viewed higher education as a ticket to the middle class. But [University of Hawaii] tuition has tripled in the past decade, and crippling student debt is keeping young people from buying homes or starting businesses. Today’s degrees are hardly tickets, or even receipts; too often, they’re bills.” According to Ing (who graduated from the University of Hawaii), he has racked up more than $45,000 in student debt. For the Democratic Party as a whole, this idea has serious traction. All three leading Democratic presidential contenders–Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley–are advocating some plan for major college debt relief.

Rep. Ing says no more college debt

“Student debt in the U.S. is over $1 trillion,” Marketplace reported on Dec. 7. “In its most recent report, the Project on Student Debt said 69 percent of 2014 graduates had debt, averaging around $28,950.” In America today, national and state governments already subsidize such calamities as war, sports stadiums, fossil fuel production and sugar. Why not college? Or would that make too much sense? “Higher education should propel young people forward, not set them further back,” said Ing in the House of Representatives news release. “Our system’s disincentives for education are completely backwards. It’s past time for America to join many other industrial nations, who see education as a right, and implement debt-free college.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

nonprofit organization under the name “Community Work Day Program,” the organization started doing business as Malama Maui Nui in July 2013. Businesses, community groups, school clubs, or individuals interested in preventing litter and facilitating recycling programs that help keep Maui Nui beautiful are invited to call 8772524 or visit MalamaMauiNui.org for more information.

WAILUKU FIRST FRIDAY FESTIVITIES Wailuku’s First Friday town party on Dec. 4 was extra festive with the addition of holiday lights strung throughout the street, a window decorating contest and Malino live on the Maui Thing stage. “This year we wanted to do something extra special to decorate the town,” said Ashley Takitani Leahey, a Wailuku community volunteer. “Since it won’t ever snow in Wailuku, we took it upon ourselves to bring holiday spirit to First

On Dec. 11, Malama Maui Nui staff discovered that someone had broken into one of their storage containers at their baseyard in Pu‘unene and stolen tools and equipment, according to a Dec. 12 news release from the nonprofit organization. “Desperate people do desperate things, and we have compassion and empathy for those individuals,” organization executive director John P. de Jesus said in the release. “We choose to embrace this opportunity to learn, exercise and experience perseverance; for the occasion to reach out and witness kokua from our community in the face of adversity.” Anyone wishing to help Malama Maui Nui can find a list of their needs at MalamaMauiNui.org/Needs. The burglary comes not long after Malama Maui Nui announced the results of their annual “Get the Drift and Bag It!” event, which brought together nearly 600 volunteers during its marine debris cleanup campaign that ran Sept. 19 through Oct. 17. The volunteers covered more than 28 miles of Maui beaches and shorelines, removing thousands of pounds of litter to help achieve litter-free oceans. “Get the Drift and Bag It!” is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, the largest annual volunteer-driven marine debris cleanup campaign spearheaded by the Ocean Conservancy. Unique to this cleanup campaign is the data collection completed by the volunteers that quantifies the types and amounts of litter found at each cleanup. Knowing details about what and where certain items are littered can help fuel the development of future litter prevention initiatives such as Maui County’s ban on tobacco use and tobacco products in County beaches, parks, and other recreational facilities. This year, the most commonly-found items in Maui County included cigarette

butts (13,050), plastic pieces (5,756), bottle caps (3,891), food wrappers (3,307) and fireworks (1,748). Malama Maui Nui sends the Maui County numbers to the Ocean Conservancy for inclusion in their global Ocean Trash Index. Malama Maui Nui shares these numbers in hopes of inspiring greater awareness as to how every day, every individual can take small actions to prevent these items from contaminating Maui Nui’s unique island environment. “A healthy ocean means more than beautiful coasts and vibrant ocean wildlife,” according to Ocean Conservancy. “A healthy ocean supplies the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink. If the ocean isn’t healthy, neither are we.” Hawaii’s marine ecosystems–though resilient–need consistent attention and care from the community in order to thrive. The ocean provides the basis for many of the beloved cultural and economic activities that keep Hawaii’s quality of life afloat. Malama Maui Nui is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate, inspire, and empower individuals and communities to beautify and maintain Maui Nui’s environment, thereby supporting its economy, quality of life, and unique Hawaiian culture. Through litter pickups, marine debris cleanups, invasive species removal, native planting, graffiti removal, recycling events, and education programs, MMN brings community, business, and government together to promote the health of Maui County’s environment. These programs and services are provided by Malama Maui Nui in partnership with the County Department of Environmental Management. Malama Maui Nui is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s leading nonprofit that brings people together to build and sustain vibrant communities. Federally recognized as a

Friday in a different way.” An ode to historic Wailuku, Sae Design and Maui Thing coordinated the “Light Up Wailuku” contest for local businesses, with the goal of lighting up the town–just as it had been in the past. “We’ve heard stories from our grandparents and other lifetime Wailuku residents about Christmas parades through Market Street, lights in every window and bustling small businesses throughout the holiday season,” Leahey said. “We wanted to bring that energy back!” Twenty businesses made the street bright by entering the first annual “Light Up Wailuku” contest. The contest was judged by Councilmember Mike Victorino, county Managing Director Keith Regan and actor/writer/local celebrity Kathy Collins. All winners received a free hour of financial consulting with Patrick Ing, CPA; a free banner from the Sign Source; and a large poinsettia plant to add to their holiday décor. The Best Window winner received a gift certificate from 808 on Main as well. The Most Original prize went to Green Ti; the Most Beautiful award went to Simply Soul and the Most Festive award went to Kama‘aina Loan. Swan Interiors took the prize for Best Window. In addition to the light contest, the County of Maui and Maui Electric Co., along with a team of Wailuku supporters, worked into the wee hours on Thursday night to light up the street for First Friday. Rows of string lights now liven up the street, bringing an extrafestive feeling to the town. ■

After certain takeoffs and landings were delayed on Nov. 7 at Paris’ Orly airport (several days before the terrorist attacks), a back-trace on the problem forced the airport to disclose that its crucial “DECOR” computer system still runs on Windows 3.1 software (introduced in 1992). DECOR’s function is to estimate the spacing between aircraft on fog-bound, visually impossible runways, and apparently it must shut down whenever the airport scrambles to find an available 3.1-qualified technician.

NEW WORLD ORDER “Crowdsourcing” startups (such as GoFundMe and Kickstarter) raise money online

for projects such as underappreciated entrepreneurial ventures or families needing help with medical expenses. Day-trading dabbler Joe Campbell went online in November to beg for assistance after being crushed by a bet of the type that many say wrecked the U.S. economy in 2007-08. He held a pessimistic “short” position in his account on KaloBios Pharmaceuticals (KBIO)–hoping to exploit traders overly optimistic about the company. However, overnight NASDAQ trading awakened him with news that KBIO’s price had skyrocketed in frenzied trading and that Campbell now owed his broker $131,000–and Campbell’s new GoFundMe post stoically asks strangers to please help him pay that off.

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Art Basel, the annual weeklong festival for “One-Percenters” in Miami Beach, is scheduled for Dec. 1 to Dec. 6, and among the many excesses is the sale of on-demand caviar, available by text message, to be delivered in person within the hour, at $275 for a 125-gram tin. Miami New Times calls Art Basel “ComicCon for the world’s moneyed elite,” and among the extravaganzas is an “exotic dance club sheltered inside a greenhouse.” Four thousand artists, from 32 countries, are participating.

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION Charles Smith, 62, is set to drive municipal buses for Broward County, Florida, until he retires in 2020, even though his record includes 14 accidents in a recent five-year period (not enough for discipline, in that, according to contract rules, not more than four were labeled “preventable” in any two consecutive years). The bus drivers’ union president told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that he “can’t figure out why” some drivers just get into more accidents than others. Elsewhere in transit news, notorious serial New York “joydriver” Darius McCollum, 50, commandeered yet another bus and was arrested on Nov. 11. He faces jail time, just as he has already served for more than two dozen bus- and train-”borrowing” incidents. (Based on news reports of McCollum over the years, he nonetheless might be a better bus driver than Charles Smith.)

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS The job market in Wayne County, Michigan, is apparently tough to crack, which led John Rose, 25, to the county sheriff’s office looking for a job. He finished the paper application in November and was awaiting his interview when deputies called him back. As he walked through the door, he was arrested, since a routine check had turned up numerous outstanding charges in Kentucky including multiple counts of rape, sexual abuse and sodomy. ■

18 Maui people talk story on the space epic as ‘The Force Awakens’ opens this week

Wars! PHOTO COURTESY GORDON TARPLEY / FLICKR

o

Story By Barry Wurst ii

n Dec. 18, all our questions will be answered. Did J.J. Abrams deliver? Was the years’ worth of wait and hype worth it? Will Star Wars: The Force Awakens be among the best films of 2015? If Greedo shot first, does that really mean Han Solo didn’t act in cold blood? If that last sentence sounds like gibberish, this article is not for you. For most fans of this series, the experience began on the big screen. I was born the year the first Star Wars movie was released and don’t recall a time in my life when I wasn’t aware and totally enamored with all things The Force. No joke, the oldest memory I have is of seeing Star Wars in a movie theater: with a little checking, I found out the memory is from 1981, seeing a revival of the first film in a Florida movie theater. The images sent me into a rapturous state and, even at a young age, forever sealed my love of cinema. The original trilogy (Star Wars in 1977, The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 and Return of the Jedi in 1983) played on Maui during their initial theatrical releases, except... all three opened four months late. That’s right, if you were a diehard fan of The Force living on Maui in the 1970s and ‘80s, you didn’t see these May/June releases in a movie theater until August. At least, with the internet being decades away, there were no spoilers readily available...unless some knucklehead from the

10 DECEMBER 17, 2015

mainland told you how they ended. Truly, the only thing more irritating than Jar Jar Binks is a smarty pants spoiler sport.. I’m far from alone in my love for these movies, particularly those that involves light sabers, droids and cocky pilots who brag about The Kessel Run. Here are some more voices from Maui, recalling their favorite memories and experiences of movies that began with A Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far, Far Away...

Alika Seki

Owner of Maui Comics and Collectibles I was born in 1981, so I was too young to see the originals. My introduction to Star Wars was seeing the Ewoks and Droids cartoon shows. Later on, when I went to summer camp, we were shown the trilogy on videocassette tapes. Seeing it made me finally feel like a grownup.

Greg Turner

Radio personality/Nerdwatch podcast founder My wildest memory that I have about Star Wars is the very first one, It was playing in theaters long after it was released. I remember as a young boy, I was four or five, my grandmother took me to see it at the Graumann’s Chinese Theater. I remember it fondly, watching when Ben Kenobi and Luke Skywalker are introduced and I looked over at my grandmother, who was sound asleep. For the running time of the movie, she was out like a light.

Erin Smith Honolulu Pulse columnist/former Throwdowns lead singer The early era of Star Wars and the memorabilia puts me in that early ‘80s vibe. People were wearing bowl haircuts and velour pants, so gigantic space bun hairdos seemed passable and cool. I think of my brother and sisters–we had a good childhood and it was just part of our pop culture mosaic. My brother had those Star Wars sheets. I currently have an ice cube tray that freezes water into small Han Solos frozen in carbonite. The legend lives on.

Jason David Movie critic for MAUIWatch My very first theater experience was A New Hope. When my Mom told me this, I was terrified, because that would have made me about five or so months old, and I know how little ones tend to be at the movies. According to my mom, as soon as the opening crawl hit the silver screen, I fell silent and soaked it all in. I may not remember it myself but knowing that I gave something that had such an influence on my life such attention and respect, at such a young age, makes me proud to be the nerd that I’ve become.

Chris Wong Diehard Star Wars fan

I remember watching Star Wars on Channel 4 as a movie special when I was a kid. I was captivated with the characters and vehicles. Luke in his black gear and Darth Vader were my favorites. My fond memory is that my mom would help me collect figures, vehicles, and play sets from Star Wars. We’d collect off of the figures’ cardboard backers picture checklist and the booklets inserted in the boxes (of Star Wars toys). I remember going to Long’s, Woolworth’s, Shirokiya, Ben Franklin, Craft Drugs and Valley Hardware for Star Wars stuff. We would also order from the Sears catalog. I’m still a Star Wars collector today, especially of Kylo Ren.

Ricky Jones “Buddy The Elf” in Maui OnStage’s Elf-The Musical My first Star Wars memory would have to be little toe-headed me, at the perfect age to be super excited after watching the previous two movies on VHS, standing in line for Return of the Jedi with my family, dressed up in an old white under shirt of my father’s, with a black ‘utility belt’ wrapped around my waist a couple times. And Adidas, of course, like a good little Jedi: All day I dreamt about Star Wars.

Sarah Loney Engineer/costumer At the end of my senior year of high school, I got a job at the newly opening Maui Mall Mega-

plex. Their goal was to open in time for the first Star Wars prequel–otherwise, the only theater on the island with a good-enough sound system to show it was in Lahaina. So they started hiring in April and we opened just a week before Star Wars: Episode I came out. They brought in projectionists from Oahu because they didn’t yet trust our brand-new staff. I worked in concession and that was a super crazy time especially since we were all new to the job. We were just swimming in popcorn and skating across buttery floors. The third prequel opened after I moved back from college and is the only midnight showing of a movie I’ve ever been too. I dressed up as a Sith and had a lightsaber made out of PVC, covered in orange vinyl tape.

Shaggy Jenkins Program Director KAKU-FM Unlike Star Trek, which taught people about a utopian society, Star Wars was the wild west, in space. It wasn’t up to people to “follow the rules” so much as it was that everyone had to choose a side, good or evil…Light or Dark. It taught that being a good person and doing good things is a choice we all have to make, and keep making, to defeat the Dark Side no matter where it is. And who didn’t want to be a Jedi?

Edward Galarita iii Lifelong Star Wars fan Ever since I could remember, Star Wars has always been a big part of my life. I was always amazed by the story, visual effects and the unforgettable characters. As a young child, I had a vast imagination and that movie

inspired me to be creative and got me interested in science, technology and mythology. I have an immeasurable love for the series and I’m very excited for The Force Awakens. I have nothing but high hopes.

pretty decent Chewbacca growl. So I did it for the crowd–they needed to hear a good Chewbacca growl. There are better Chewbaccas than mine, but mine will get you in the game. I think I won movie tickets to the next showing.

Gannon Gilmore

Ellen Peterson

Member of The Minorities When Return of the Jedi came out, I asked my Mom to take me to see it. I was crying to her, “please take me to see it.” It’s the only movie I saw seven times in the theater.

DJ Blast Star Wars made me fall in love with cinema. It was a physical reaction. It was a film in 2D that became real. It inspired me across the board in everything in do.

Jack Heller 10-year-old Star Wars fan Star Wars is awesome! I am a first-time watcher of the series. I can relate to the characters, especially Luke, because he is quiet yet brave when the battle with the empire began. I liked that Chewbacca and Han were friends, too. Darth Vader was scary but I was glad to see his Death Star explode at the end. Hooray for the good guys!

Kit Kat Club Cabaret I remember seeing Star Wars when it first came out in the theater and thinking it was really scary. I remember wanting, very badly, hair like Princess Leia. I had a pink t-shirt with an image of Mark Hamill on the front and Star Wars written in some sort of glitter font. I wore it all the time. Those are my oldest and strongest memories of Star Wars.

Return of the Jedi was my first memory of bondage/submission. I learned that the woman as a slave was a hot thing. I knew, even as a kid, that that held currency. Makes sense that I would remember the woman’s role. Sheesh, what year did that one come out? 1983? Right–seven-year-old me having this experience in outer space. Otherwise, not too memorable.

Star Wars has been part of my life for so long, I literally can’t remember the first time I saw it. We had the movies on VHS when I was growing up, and I watched them over and over. They inspired my early love of sci-

fi, and I actually think it was my voracious consumption of science fiction in my early teens that started me on the path to becoming a writer. In recent years, introducing my daughter to Star Wars and watching it with her for the first time has been a major highlight of the parenting experience so far.

The Phantom Menace came out when I was in high school. I stayed up all night in line with a bunch of friends and classmates. It was like a big party. Then we watched the movie. The party was over after that.

Brian Kohne Director of Get A Job and the forthcoming Kuleana I saw The Exorcist at age 10 in 1974, Jaws in 1975, then Star Wars in 1977 at Village Cinema in the Ka‘ahumanu Center between Party Pantry and the Gnu Haven restaurant (now Koho’s). Like other dumb kids, my brother and I watched the space epic repeatedly; movies were cheaper than baby sitters at the time, so our parents were happy to ditch us at the theater so they could party. Today, I’m not afraid of sharks, and am at complete ease dating women who levitate, swivel their head, and vomit in my face. But I am deathly afraid of seeing another George Lucas movie, so thankfully he’s got little to do with The Force Awakens. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more film articles, visit: mauitime.com/film

I

would drive an hour out of my way to eat the furikake fries and wasabi mayo that Nuka serves at lunch. Even if you aren’t as crazy about furikake fries, there is plenty to love on this lunch menu. The first thing to know is lunch hour runs from 10am to 1:30pm. I recommend an early lunch because sitting in their dining room during the daytime is exquisite. They have cushioned seating along one wall and tables for more intimate conversation. The beautiful gyotaku artwork and simple design makes for an eloquent lunch setting in Haiku. It’s even better if you can take a long midday meal and enjoy one of their sumptuous wines or beer with lunch. They just added Friday to their weekday-only schedule, and you can plan accordingly. One of their signature dishes at lunch is the saimin, made with fresh noodles from the Sun Noodle Factory. The noodles are amazing, my 10-year-old daughter and 21-year-old nephew both equally grinded every single noodle in their saimin bowls, leaving me not a drop extra to scrounge. Luckily I tasted it before they dove in. But even more incredible than the ultimate al dente noodle is their dashi made with fish bones. It’s crave-worthy, pristine clear broth is light on the palate and doesn’t come off as rich or fishy. The menu works like this for the noodles: order your size and prepara-

tion first. A small is $6, regular is $9 and large is $12. There are three preps: choose from saimin, or a dry mein that comes pan-seared with broth on the side, or the stir fry with garlic and chili. Then you choose your noodle toppings–you get two with your order but can add more for a $1 each. For toppings there are smoked pork, egg, wakame, mixed veggie, BBQ beef stick, fish ball and smoked tako. I knew that Nuka was doing saimin but I was surprised to see burgers on the menu. There are just two options: Maui Cattle Company beef or the “Chop-Chop,” a chopped local fish and veggie patty. After inquiring with my server on the fish (ahi) and the vegetables (carrot and green onion), I absolutely could not resist trying the Chop Chop. Burgers come with cheese ($5), deluxe ($6–lettuce, tomato, onion) and double ($9). Sides of fries are $3 or a basket is $6. The fries come lightly dusted with furikake and include a highly addictive wasabi mayo dip. They also offer salads and acai bowls with small or larger options. I have to order their salad–somehow it offsets my guilt for consuming the fries–and it’s delicious. The hijiki and cucumbers are marvelous along with the house shio koji dressing. The acai bowl includes your pick from 10 healthy toppings like papaya and hemp seeds. Nuka also has a great dinner menu serving Japanese cuisine and sushi 4:30-10pm. Burgers as big as your heart desires

Teddy’s Bigger Burgers Food Truck 111 Kahului Beach Rd. 808-280-9371 Facebook.com/TeddysFoodTruckMaui

I

f you doubt that a food truck could be as good as its brick and mortar location, I’m with you. So recently, after seeing the Teddy’s Bigger Burgers Food Truck parked off of Kahului Beach road, I decided to put them to the test. The Lahaina Teddy’s Bigger Burgers is one of the best burger spots on the island. They have a cheerful, climate-controlled dining room with one of the most extensive–and customizable–burger menus on the island. How could a truck compete with that? At the restaurant, your order Teddy’s burgers according to size, and the truck is no different. You can order a single or upsize as far as a quadruple burger, as your appetite dictates. Similarly, both Teddy’s restaurant and food truck burgers come with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and special sauce. While the restaurant has more topping customizations, the truck still offers plenty of add-ons like avocado, bacon, Teriyaki sauce, green chilis and cheese. The truck also gives customers a few specials like their Western burger, Green Chile burger and the Bacado or Teriyaki chicken. Moreover, the Teddy’s Bigger Burger truck also offers turkey burgers, grilled and fried chicken breast sandwiches and their veggie burger. As at Teddy’s in Lahaina, the truck lets you add fries, onion rings or tater

tots to any burger. The truck lacks the restaurant’s scrumptious Roselani shakes and salads, but they couldn’t put everything on wheels. This truck is all about the sandwich, and I can appreciate that. After ordering a few rounds of burgers from the truck, I can confirm they are the real deal. Because they’re made to order, expect to wait about 10 minutes for them to call your name. The fries, tots and onion rings come hot and crisp, freshly fried in the truck. The Teriyaki burger was a winner, and the Green Chili cheese burger was full of flavor. What I especially love about Teddy’s is the bun–a pillow of fluffy, white potato bread that absorbs the sauce and serves as the perfect support for a burger patty. The Teddy’s Bigger Burgers truck parks every week along Kahului Beach Road and its bright red and yellow logo decals–complete with a giant burger picture and red and white checker print–make it easy to spot. They usually park on the Wailuku side of the small boat harbor. Generally they are there from Wednesdays to Fridays, except when they’re appearing at special events. The best way to find their location is by following their Facebook page. They also show up at the Maui Brewing Co. Kihei brew pub. This week, you will find them along Kahului Beach Road on Thursday and Friday from 10:30am to 3pm. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Votes For Women! ‘Suffragette’ is strong but doesn’t cut deep enough ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 106 Min.

I

t makes me a little embarrassed (though I suspect I’m not alone) to admit the first time I heard of the British women’s suffrage movement was from Mary Poppins. While most will remember the scenes of Julie Andrews and her flying umbrella, the animated penguins and Dick Van Dykes’ “Steppin Time,” there was a subplot buried in that magnificent film, about where the children’s mother is while her kids are taken on fantastical adventures. The mother, named Winifred, is revealed to be a member of Emmeline Pankhurst’s British women’s suffragette movement. Winifred’s lone number, “Sister Suffragette,” memorably included the lyrics, “our daughter’s daughters will adore us, and they’ll sing in grateful chorus, well done, sister suffragette.” Pankhurst is even name dropped in the song and Winifred gleefully exclaims “Votes For Women!” repeatedly during her brief screen time. Let it be said that Mary Poppins was about so much more than just a spoonful of sugar. To finally get to the new movie, Suf-

fragette only makes me wish I were still writing about Mary Poppins, which at least had a full, more focused sense of what it’s about. Despite being directed, written by and starring some very talented women, it feels like something is missing. Carey Mulligan stars as Maud Watts, a wife and hard working mother who, in 1912, joins the woman’s rights movement and immediately finds herself and her family ostracized. Even with the encouragement of a local doctor (Helena Bonham Carter) and no less than Pankhurst herself (played by Meryl Streep), Maud’s commitment to the cause brings her imprisonment and heartache. Yet, despite overwhelming odds, she and her sisters fight on. Suffragette provides a potent, well mounted account of both the movement and the atmosphere of an oppressively sexist environment. The washed out grey look is just-right, as are the shots of clothes lines reaching across the buildings, suggesting the considerable presence, hard work and designated roles of the women who live there. Streep’s one scene as Pankhurst is, unfortunately, a quickie cameo.Yet, who better than one of our greatest film actresses to play a landmark female figure? Mulligan is pretty

Fighting the good fight

good, sinking her teeth into a number of meaty dramatic scenes, but doesn’t carry the film like she should. Neither do her co-stars or the thorough yet choppy story. Despite lots of eventful passages (involving protests, imprisonment, harrowing forced feedings and a tragedy at a race track), a steady momentum is never established. It was wise to make the mother/son relationship between Maud and her boy the heart of the film. The scene where Maud’s boy is taken from her (for reasons I won’t reveal) is gut wrenching. Yet, this aspect of the story fades in the third act. I was moved by the closing shots of the real protestors, as well as the closing pre-credits scroll. It seems this would have been much better as a documentary, without the burden of carrying a narra-

tive atop an engrossing history lesson. Considering how timely the film is, with Jennifer Lawrence’s recent essay on unfair salaries for actresses (and women in general) and Patricia Arquette’s rousing Oscar speech on the topic (which Streep demonstrably applauded), you’d think this would leave a greater impact. The screenwriter is Abi Morgan, who wrote the unforgettable Shame, and the director, Sarah Gavron, has a feel for staging scenes with massive extras, towering sets and lived in details. There’s enough here to spark discussion and further interest, with enough entertainment value and a swift pace to keep it from becoming a formulaic Hollywood history lesson. Still, while superior to Mary Poppins on the subject of woman’s suffrage, it doesn’t cut deep enough. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Out of sight, out of mind, eh? That strategy may have worked for you so far this winter, but the problem is that some of your messes won’t stay swept under the rug. In fact, they’re about to crawl back out from under it, and you won’t be able to escape them so easily again. Don’t back down or run from this shit. It’ll just get worse from here. The forms your problems present themselves in this week are the simplest they’ll ever be. Putting off solving them will just complicate your life. It’ll never get easier than it is right now. Roll up your sleeves and get to it. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Aquarians aren’t especially acquisitive creatures so it’s difficult for you to get into the often quite materialistic holiday mindset of your fellow humans. I’m sure you breathed a sigh of relief this week that the gift-giving season is mostly over. Unfortunately, it’s not, exactly. Your happiness, this upcoming year, is largely predicated upon how generous you are. The more you give, the happier–and yes, probably, poorer–you’ll be. Being self-centered is no crime–especially when you’re as fascinating as you are–but it’s kind of a well-researched topic by now. Being so selfless, however, is sort of a new thing, which will be a lot more satisfying (and fascinating) once you get the hang of it, anyway.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

All it takes is one Piscean look of disdain and you’re loaded up with all kinds of doubt. That “been there, done that” look your watery cousins are so good at pulling can make you wonder if you’re wasting your life in pursuit of goals that don’t matter. Ultimately, who gives a crap about others’ opinions? You don’t have to answer to them. The question that’s important: Have you already been there and done that? If not, shouldn’t you get a chance to give it a whirl? Well, then, maybe they’re right. Do you really need to ride that ride again, or is it time to move on to something new?

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) is hell on Leos. You hate the feeling of missing out on something. Whether it’s a new trend, a special moment, or a fantastic party, you want to be involved. Unfortunately, there’s too much going on this week for you to be part of even a small fraction of what you wish you could. Time to pick and choose. Resist the temptation to do more than is realistic or reasonable. Pursuing that urge would be disastrous: Instead of having three fantastic experiences, you’d get a dozen nearly pointless half-experiences, virtually eclipsed by the stressful (and thus more vivid) transitions between them. Stick with the best handful and let the rest go, would you? VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You’re crazy psychic, so guessing what’s going on inside other people–even when they’re crap at expressing it–is no sweat. Thus it may be difficult for you to wrap your head around just how mystifyingly unpredictable and exasperatingly incomprehensible you and your motivations can be for others. Expressing your frustration when they’re clueless, however, isn’t necessarily the best way to encourage intimacy, nor is the ever-so-slightly unreasonable demand that those around you become as psychic as you are. A few gentle lessons–“Understanding How I Work, For Dummies”–are definitely in order.

I’m thrilled about my new apartment–mostly because it has a balcony. This, of course, does me almost no good in the dead of winter. My excitement, therefore, has to do with the anticipation of future good times out there, not with anything that’s actually going on now. Sound familiar? You, too, have pinned most of your current well-being on something that may or may not happen later. Fine–to a certain extent. Go ahead and gleefully anticipate your future fun. But make an effort to stop missing out on all the good shit that’s actually happening now, just because it doesn’t fit into this (theoretical) box of pleasure you’ve imagined for yourself. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You suck at waiting. That’s why this week may seem unbearable, especially because most of the things you’re waiting for won’t give you any indication of when they’ll actually happen. Limbo’s a frustrating place for you Rams, who prefer solid, bright, easy to understand situations, not this endless expanse of grey areas. However, there’s nothing you can do about it, at the moment–and freaking out or losing your temper will only make the boundaries of this land of fog and uncertainty recede further, stranding you more completely. Chill out, darling. Relax. Bring a book. It’s going to be a while. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Choose your New Year’s resolutions carefully this year. Focus on what you really and truly want to achieve for yourself. Even your most casual intentions could stick around long-term, whether you actually want them to or not. Starting the year off on the right foot isn’t absolutely essential to having a good year–but it would make it a hell of alot easier. Decide ahead of time how you want to be and to live this year. Then don’t bother a gradual ramp-up to your new chapter. Just start living it.

I’ve been sleeping on a nice sturdy cardboard bed. I’m not being sarcastic. Clever design has compensated for the seeming weakness of the material, so that it actually feels more stable, sturdy, and less creaky than many wooden beds. Similarly, your cleverness and practicality can offset many of the flaws and faults of your current situation(s), making things better than you imagined, despite the less-than-ideal nature of your materials. In other words, stop hunting around for the perfect whatever-you’re-looking-for, and just make do with what you’ve already got. If you tweak it just right, it’ll end up better than the supposedly “perfect” version ever would have been.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

I sometimes find it difficult to give advice to you Scorps. That’s because wisdom often lies in taking the middle road–so that’s what I feel I ought to advise. However, I conversely admire you for so rarely choosing that safe, smart path, instead opting for a much more fascinating, exciting, and perilously extreme route. That’s why I’m excited about this week’s horoscope, because all my internal conflicts are resolved; the middle way is boring-ass bullshit. The crazy, twisty, risky path you’d rather pursue is totally the way to go. Don’t give it another thought–just enjoy the ride.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

As pleasant as this rut’s been, it’s time to clamber out of it and move on the next thing. You’ve had your chance to wallow for a while, and the world’s been fairly patient and indulgent regarding your seeming unwillingness to move forward in any real way. But enough’s enough. The slack we’ve all been cutting you has just about run out. Drag yourself out of the mud, already. Change out of your filthy clothes, shower off all the grit of your hapless lack of motivation, and put on your walking–no, let’s make it running–shoes. Make up for lost time: catch up with where you should have been by now. You can.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

New Year’s resolutions will stick like wet snow on frozen ground this year. Any sincere effort to transform your life will not only succeed, but stay in its new shape, instead of snapping back to its old familiar form as soon as you’re not paying attention. Don’t waste this chance to get things moving in new directions, even if you’re uncertain about where to go. Head somewhere. Even if it’s ultimately the “wrong” way, you’ll be better off; it’s a hell of alot easier to change course with momentum than it is when you’re simply stuck.
