$406K for processing dropbox material alone. If Aloha Recycling had the contract the cost would have been $149K.” Perhaps, but we'll never know for certain if Reed is correct because the county didn’t let Aloha rebid the contract.

WILL MAUI COUNTY COUNCIL START REAL OVERSIGHT OF ARAKAWA ADMINISTRATION? Apparently I’m not the only one in the county who has trouble taking the Arakawa Administration at its word these days. On Friday, Dec. 18, the Maui County Council referred a little-advertised charter amendment to committee for discussion. Transmitted by Councilmember Riki Hokama, the amendment–submitted as a special committee continues to examine a possible county manager form of government that would strip the mayor’s office of most, if not all of its powers–would “require Coun-

The expression says everything. Keep in mind this isn’t a paparazzi shot, or one of MauiTime’s snarky shots–this is an official County of Maui photo of Stewart Stant, taken on Dec. 16, 2015, at his swearing-in as the county’s new director of the Department of Environmental Management. Then again, if I was going to start running a department that had devastated its own recycling operations, can’t even pick up the trash on a consistent basis, gotten busted by the feds for spending years injecting wastewater into the ground in Lahaina–actions which devastated the coral reefs off North Beach–was staking everything on a giant waste-to-energy project that seems to be stalled, I’d look that way, too. Stant, a manager at the county’s Wastewater Division, is replacing Environmental Management Director Kyle Ginoza, who resigned earlier this month to take a job at Hawaii Gas (Mike Miyamoto, the department’s Deputy Director and theoretically next in line to replace Ginoza, is going somewhere else–county officials haven’t yet said where). “Stewart is all about hard work, and it pleases me to know that he will be applying that work ethic to run one of our most important departments,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa in a Dec. 16 news release. “Kyle did a fantastic job for us and we all wish him well on his latest endeavor, but I know we will be in good hands with Stewart.” I guess Mayor Arakawa and I will have to disagree over the meaning of the phrase “fantastic job.” In the spring of 2013, the county decreed that it would shut down all its recycling centers. That’s all–no warning, no discussion. Don’t worry, county officials said–the private sector can handle things, and the future waste-to-energy plant will make recycling obsolete anyway. But residents did worry. And they started screaming. Soon, Arakawa back-tracked. For the county’s waste-to-energy project to work, it has to be cheaper than other alternatives, like getting people to recycle

plastics, paper goods and green waste. And that’s the official line out of the county. They say recycling programs like the “3Can” experiment in South Maui–another recycling effort the county decided to shut down, then reversed course after residents cried foul–are just too expensive, especially when compared to a big waste-to-energy facility that would simply burn everything. But what if recycling wasn’t so expensive? What if county Recycling Coordinator Hana Steel had produced a spreadsheet way back in August 2013–obtained by Mauitime–that showed the costs associated with 3-Can were actually negligible? Of course, county officials like Miyamoto say the spreadsheet wasn’t “complete” and isn’t legit, but Steel also wouldn’t comment for this story. That’s because she’s been on paid leave since July 2014. That’s right–for the last year and a half or so, the County of Maui has paid Steel to stay home. And since it’s a “personnel issue,” officials won’t explain why. This shouldn’t be surprising. Tracy Takamine, the former Solid Waste division chief who oversaw Steel, is also suing the county, alleging wrongful termination. A passionate supporter of the county’s recycling efforts, he was sacked in 2013, around the time Arakawa said he was shutting down all the recycling centers. Court records say it was over the way Takamine attempted to discipline an employee, but

Takamine disputed that. Again, his termination was a “personnel issue” and not something county officials will comment on. In any case, the county’s Recycling Section employed five people just a couple years ago. Today it employs just one. This is the department Stewart Stant is taking over. These are the priorities he must now push. I’d wish him luck, but he’s going to need far more than that if he’s going to succeed in a meaningful way. ADDENDUM: A day after I posted the above on Dec. 17 on Mauitime.com, County Communications Director Rod Antone emailed me the following statement: “Go to a map of the United States, close your eyes, drop your finger and whatever town you land on, look em up and find out if they have a recycling division in their city, county, municipality,” Antone wrote. “(You might have to do this several times.) Ask to talk to someone in charge and ask them how much it costs to do whatever it is they do to recycle. Then ask them if they could do the same thing if they were in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.” That’s the county’s response to my reporting on recycling. Not to dispute my reporting on how they’ve decimated the recycling section or to explain why it was necessary to put Hana Steel on paid leave for 18 months, but to offer a completely bogus request that implies that recycling is just too expensive out here. Yes, recycling is expensive here. But who’s to say it has to be this expensive? Three years ago, the county first awarded the contract for its recycling drop boxes to Aloha Glass Recycling, then yanked it after Maui Disposal protested over the contract’s wording (the county then awarded it to Maui Disposal). In a Feb. 27, 2014 letter to now-sidelined Hana Steel that MauiTime recently obtained, Aloha Recycling President Thomas D. Reed insists that his company would have managed the dropbox contract for far less than Maui Disposal. “Our original bid for this program was considerable less than Maui Disposal’s bid even after their original bid was negotiated downward by 50%” Reed wrote. “During 2013 the County paid Maui Disposal

Mayor Arakawa

cil approval of the Mayor’s appointment of department directors.” This is huge–a big power grab by the Council against the mayor’s office. As things stand now, the mayor of Maui County can appoint anyone he wants–professional, crony or fool–to run a county department, with the exception of the Prosecuting Attorney, Corporation Counsel and the Department of Water Supply, which require Council approval. If Hokama’s charter amendment passes, the Council would also have to approve future mayoral appointments to the departments of Finance, Planning, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Housing and Human Concerns, Transportation and, of course, Environmental Management. Don’t worry, Stant–I don’t think it’s personal. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

SEE ‘THREE-YEAR SWIM CLUB’ AUTHOR SPEAK ON C-SPAN For those of you who can’t get enough of the new book The Three-Year Swim Club–the story of Coach Soichi Sakamoto and his ditch kids who went from Pu‘unene poverty in the 1930s to international swimming glory, which we discussed in our Nov. 5, 2015 cover story “Maui’s Swimming Legends”–you can watch author Julie Checkoway speak at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, California about the book in a 50-minute video on C-SPAN. “They were out-pacing Olympians within their first three months,” Checkoway said during her Oct. 29, 2015 appearance. “It’s a very improbable story, it really is. A rise from the ditches, really, of Maui–from tremendous poverty– to tremendous triumph, not just in the pool. But in the culture, in society, to American citizenship.” In the video, Checkoway speaks about the book for the first 30 minutes, and answers questions for the remainder. So it looks like the State of Hawaii has no problem with Charter Communications taking over Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s franchises. The proposed merger will affect about six million cable customers (200,000 of which are in Hawaii. The deal is worth nearly $80 billion. “After an extensive review of the merger transaction application, which included statewide public hearings, we determined that the proposed transfer of Oceanic’s Hawaii cable franchises to Charter, with the conditions imposed on by the state, is in the public’s best interest,” said Ji Sook “Lisa” Kim, administrator of the state Dept. of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ (DCCA) Cable Television Division, in a Dec. 18 news release. “As outlined in the Decision and Order, Charter is committed to improving cable networks in Hawaii and providing a low cost broadband service for Hawaii’s low-income consumers.” Of course, the DCCA said its approval is “conditional” on Charter doing the following: “Provide a broadband service for low-income consumers in Hawaii (providing families with children participating in the National School Lunch Program and seniors, age 65 and older who are eligible and receive federal Supplemental Security Income benefits, with broadband service initially for $14.99/month, at speeds up to 30 Megabits per second (Mbps) download, and 4 Mbps upload) within three years of the close of the merger transaction,” states the news release. “Invest $10,000,000 to build out its networks in Hawaii; and build out 1,000 new line extensions of its networks to homes in its Hawaii cable franchise areas within three years of the

close of the merger transaction. “Provide 1,000 new public WiFi access points within three years of the close of the merger transaction, 100 of these new access points to be deployed at public parks, civic and community centers, and other public open areas and gathering places at the direction of DCCA. “Within 30 months after the close of the merger transaction, transition virtually all of OTWC’s cable systems to all-digital networks and, upon the conversion, Charter/OTWC shall provide, among other things, subscribers two (2) digital transport adaptors or “basic boxes” free of charge for a period of two (2) years and make them available at OTWC’s customer service centers and delivery by mail (including pre-paid return service). “Promote and make available energy efficient set-top boxes (within three years of close of merger transaction, at least 90% of newly deployed boxes shall meet energy star requirements), and Charter/OTWC is encouraged to: (1) partner with community organizations to educate and promote the use energy efficient set-top boxes; and (2) develop an economically feasible program to trade out old boxes with efficient ones.” That’s a lot to ask for–especially the 30 Mbps download speed requirement (here on Maui, we average about a tenth of that). What’s more, it’s the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that has ultimate say over the deal. According to the DCCA, they’ve now been reviewing the merger for 98 days.

In November, lawyer Michael Petersen of Appleton, Wisconsin, was ordered by county judge Philip Kirk (in a sentence for contempt of court) to inform every client he acquires in the following 12 months that Petersen is a “crook,” “cheat,” “thief” and “liar.” Kirk concluded that Peterson had lied about a plea deal with the prosecutor and created phony documents for backup, leading a client to plead guilty to armed robbery when the prosecutor said there was never such a deal. According to the Appleton Post Crescent, Kirk (after dressing down Petersen in colorful language) told him, “I want you to have as much business as a pimp in a nursing home.”

GREAT ART! Mexican artist Renato Garza Cervera’s work usually involves realistic-looking figures created to startle (e.g., a “piggy bank” as a scowling hog of a man down on all fours), but his recent “gang member” floor rugs seem a career peak. Rejecting bear rugs and lion rugs, Cervera’s “Of Genuine Contemporary Beast” project features exquisitely constructed, life-size, snarling, naked, heavily tattooed men’s bodies (as if skinned) as rugs, representing “modern” beasts–Salvadorean gang members. Actually, Cervera told Vice.com he intended sympathy: “Societies always invent new beasts in order to make others responsible for their problems.”

INSULTING GOLLUM Dr. Bilgin Ciftci was fired in October from Turkey’s Public Health Institution and later charged with violating one of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s favorite laws–against “insulting” the president (which carries a maximum

four-year prison term)–because Ciftci had joined a Turkish Facebook thread that was denouncing Erdogan with facial images comparing him to the “Lord of the Rings” character Gollum. The judge, admitting his unfamiliarity, appointed a five-person group of experts to advise him whether the Erdogan-Gollum comparison was “insulting.” (The Lord of the Rings film director Peter Jackson immediately protested that the images depict not Gollum but his benign alter ego Smeagol, making the comparison obviously uninsulting.)

THIS WEEK IN TURTLE DIAPERS Scientists from Australia’s University of Queensland have developed “swimsuits” to act as diapers for six giant loggerhead turtles as they study their diets by examining their feces. “To our great surprise,” said one researcher, they “worked perfectly.” The suits were easy to put on, comfortable for the sea turtles to wear (according to the researchers, not the turtles), looked great (ditto), and we were “able to collect the entire fecal sample,” he bragged to a London Daily Telegraph reporter in Sydney.

THE RESEARCHER’S JOB After all, leeches are interesting and thus someone has to study them, and Mark Siddall, curator of invertebrates at the American Museum of Natural History, is that person. These leeches are easily found, but only in the rear ends of hippopotamuses, he noted, and told Wired.com in August that if a creature can exploit a niche others cannot, it has a monopoly on food. “The only part on the hippo that’s vascularized enough to get a good blood meal [is] the rectal region.” (Making life worse for these leeches, they lack the strong jaws of other leeches and must instead use a nose-like organ that, writes Wired, it “snakes” into the vascular tissue.) ■

‘City Of Flowers’ As more luxury condos go up in Wailea, we recall the resort’s original vision

By Anthony Pignataro

O

h look, more luxury condos are coming to Wailea. The 70-unit Keala O Wailea project, situated near the Wailea Gateway Center, should open near the end of 2017, the Dec. 10 Maui News tells us. Though the story appears above the fold on the paper’s front page, there’s nothing whatsoever new about it. The condos will retail for between $700,000 and $1.8 million (not surprising) and most are already sold (ditto). It’s also not particularly shocking that more than half of the buyers don’t actually live on Maui–this has been true of the island as a whole since about 2008. The project’s lava rock walls, metal gates, pale stucco walls and green tile roofs make the new development completely indistinguishable from the rest of Wailea. And though the News insists that the project will pave the way for affordable housing, rest assured that said housing will go up outside the confines of Wailea. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Wailea, though little more than a playground for rich tourists and off-island owners, was to be much more. In fact, Wailea’s first developers sold the community to Maui as a revolutionary prototype community far closer to Disney’s EPCOT Center than anything that exists on the island today. Of course, Maui was a very different place back then. The rising power and influence of labor unions on Maui throughout the 1940s and 1950s had an unexpected problem–though workers on plantations were able to get raises and better benefits, the big landowners instituted hiring freezes to cut their costs. For anyone graduating from the island high schools in the late 1950s and 1960s, finding work on Maui became all but impossible.

10 DECEMBER 24, 2015

For that reason, according to former Maui Planning Commissioner Dick Mayer, today’s environmental issues and concerns weren’t mentioned back then. Instead, people wanted jobs–lots and lots of jobs–so that Maui families didn’t have to watch as their kids moved to the Mainland to find careers. “Decision-makers didn’t consider the environment an issue back then,” Mayer told me. “The agenda was, ‘just create jobs to keep our kids here.’” Two key events took place in 1959 that provided a solution: Hawaii statehood and the introduction of jet airline travel. Suddenly, Hawaii was an easy, safe travel destination for millions of Americans. It was still exotic, but as a full part of the United States, it seemed far more accessible. Hawaii–and Maui–would need more places for them to stay. The development of Ka‘anapali in the early 1960s had been a major success, but Wailea had the potential of being even bigger. In 1957, Matson–owner of the famed White Ships that had been bringing tourists to Hawaii since the 1930s–had purchased the 1,500-acre Wailea region from Ulupalakua Ranch. When Alexander & Baldwin bought Matson in the late 1960s, they hired Grosvenor International to develop the property to cater to exactly those tourists. The plan devised by Grosvenor–billed as “The City of Flowers” and detailed in Maui News stories from 1968 to 1971, makes for fascinating reading today. The project was, to put it mildly, massive. It had two main components. “It will be an entirely new town catering primarily to the tourist who wants to escape from the noise and bustle of city traffic,” The

Maui News wrote in a Mar. 15, 1969 story. “Wailea will have a permanent population of 50,000, which directly or indirectly will derive its living from the development.” Let’s unpack this carefully. According to the 1970 census, Maui’s population as a whole was around 47,000. But Grosvenor was planning to build a town–not a mere “community”–of 50,000 in Wailea. Though Wailea would be oriented towards tourists–complete with 11,000 hotel units–the people who worked in the hotels would also live within the Wailea town, in 8,000 apartment and residential units. These are staggering numbers, especially considering that Wailea’s population today hovers just beneath 6,000. What’s more, Grosvenor wanted Wailea to be automobile-free. “Cars will be confined to the fringes of the Community,” said the Mar. 15, 1969 Maui News story. “The only vehicles permitted within the built-up areas will be those providing an internal transportation system, such as tractor trains, and a restricted number of service vehicles. Special heavily screened parking areas will be provided at convenient locations.” Tractor trains moving workers and tourists alike through Wailea. But Grosvenor didn’t stop there. They also envisioned “pedestrian streets,” which would “meander throughout the complex, creating a theme of discovery and surprise,” according to The Maui News. Grosvenor took the “city” in “City of Flowers” seriously. Wailea today is the definition of sprawl, with no walking streets or central public space–the opposite of what Grosvenor first envisioned and sold to the Maui Planning Commission. “The central core area, around which the development will grow, will be both

a gathering place and the communal center,” The Maui News wrote. “It will include a variety of restaurants, shops, amusement and cultural facilities. It will feature a town square, highlighted throughout by clusters of flowers, close to Wailea’s central beach.” Grosvenor estimated that it would take about 20 years to build all that out–putting a completion date around 1990. If this is starting to sound like science fiction, check out this statement from Grosvenor President Gilbert Hardman, quoted in the article: “Architecture will be simple and unobtrusive, woven into the terrain and the landscaping,” Hardman said in the Mar. 15, 1969 article. Architects need not achieve their effects by constantly imposing structures… blatant and pretentious buildings must be avoided.” For Maui News readers, none of this was surprising. Six months earlier, the paper had first written that Grosvenor had big plans, saying that company president Gilbert Hardman “believes in planning a development that fits into the existing community, rather than importing a concept foreign to the local environment and forcing it into a community.” Nearly two years later, then-A&B President Allen C. Wilcox, Jr. echoed those sentiments. “Wailea not only would not harm the natural beauty of the site, but enhance it in every possible way to make it an outstanding resort and residential community,” he said in a Feb. 11, 1971 Maui News story. Throughout 1970 and the first part of 1971, Grosvenor’s dream started to take shape. A site blessing took place in midMay 1970. Wilcox was there, as were Maui Mayor Elmer Cravalho, Senate President David McClung and House Speaker Tadao

project.” It was a vision that even included a “living museum” of Hawaiian antiquities. Construction of the golf course was churning up a considerable number of ancient relics–so many that the Bishop Museum suggested Wailea include a museum. “The most unusual artifact recovered from either site was the wooden handle of a shark tooth knife, surprisingly well preserved inspite [sic] of its location in an open site exposed to the elements,” The Maui News reported on July 15, 1970. “Bishop Museum archaeologists say that to their knowledge this is the first such specimen of a shark tooth implement, from an archaeological context.” In short, the Wailea envisioned back in 1970, 1971 was a full-blown city, full of shops, restaurants, hotels, apartments and attractions, including a Hawaiian antiquities museum. The people who worked in said hotels, restaurants and attractions would also live there, and everyone would get around not by driving cars, but by walking or riding in public shuttles. A&B–represented by former Maui Supervisor/future Maui Mayor Hannibal Tavares–sold Wailea to the Maui Planning Commission, which in the early 1970s approved the project 7-1 (Dick Mayer provided the only no vote because too many units were being proposed). “I got a

living in Wailea. And if that’s gone, it’s very easy to ditch the pedestrian-friendly streets and those tractor trains. And if cars are now welcome in Wailea, why bother putting in a bunch of “cultural attractions” like museums? Of course, Grosvenor was long gone by the late 1970s, replaced by Belt, Collins & Associates, and they took their vision of a big Wailea city with them. All that remained was the land and a desire to maximize landowner and developer profits. “The Belt, Collins & Associates master plan anticipated Wailea having a population of 9,000,” Hibbard wrote. “Thanks to the positive response to the more up-scale residential offerings and attendant scaling back of the resort, Wailea only had a population of a little over 5,000 in 2000.” Because where land development on Maui is concerned, upscale beats local. It’s not even close, and it’s likely to get worse. Today Wailea is paradise for the rich, but it could have been a wonderful home for anyone, regardless of wealth. It’s something to think about the next time you read about more luxury condos or resorts getting built in Wailea. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Beppu, The Maui News reported on May 23, 1970. As bombs fell on Kaho‘olawe, Reverend John Kukahiko blessed the project. After attendees planted some trees with a gold-plated shovel, Maui County Councilman Richard Caldito proceeded to win a golf driving contest. That little golf driving contest clearly reflected the developer’s construction priorities. Needing a quick source of cash, they set out to build Wailea’s Blue Course first. “Of necessity, construction will come in phases,” an A&B representative said in the Mar. 9, 1971 Maui News. “[T]he first being the golf course and clubhouse scheduled for completion this fall.” After that would come the residential development– “including units for employees,” the A&B representative said, adding that they still considered their Wailea project to be a “mini city.” “Wailea will not be the type of resort where you have hotel accommodations and golf but go elsewhere for fun,” the A&B rep said, ironically describing Wailea exactly as it exists today. “Wailea is planned to be an integral community with attractions and conveniences enjoyed by both tourists and local people.” Here it is, nearly the spring of 1971, and A&B’s concept for Wailea still includes “housing for people working on the construction and service industries for the

concession from A&B on the setback from the ocean,” Mayer said. “But even then, A&B still said that one-third of the housing would be workforce housing. They used that term–‘workforce housing.’” So what happened? Why can’t we head down to Wailea now and walk around this futuristic urban wonderland? The answer lies in the recent Maui News article about the Keala O Wailea project. Put simply, landowners like A&B realized they could make a great deal more money simply catering to the rich, rather than by trying to build an entire community for everyone. The Wailea Ekahi, Elua and Ekolu condos began opening in the mid-1970s. Demand was high, and prices shot up. “On April 15, 1978, some 1,200 buyers bid for 148 units to be constructed in the Wailea Ekolu Village in a frenzy similar to buying at Kaanapali and Kapalua,” Mansel Blackford noted in his 2001 book Fragile Paradise: The Impact of Tourism on Maui, 1959-2000. What developer is going to ignore that? Or, as Don J. Hibbard put it in his 2006 book Designing Paradise: The Allure of the Hawaiian Resort, “The escalating returns on Wailea’s residential sales led to a scaling back on the number of units built, as higher quality was favored over density.” So much for Wailea workers actually

S#*! William Shatner Says TALKING STORY WITH CAPT. KIRK BEFORE HIS KA‘ANAPALI SHOW About how men try to make male friends and how less successful we are then women at it, and I don’t know why.

WS: J.J. is masterful, absolutely. That’s going to be a big day for movies which probably will be the biggest movie of all time. Imagine being around for that?

WS: I’m planning a documentary on a ride I took [on] a motorcycle, and this figure that is astonishing. I drove a motorcycle from Chicago to Los Angeles. On a motorcycle I helped design–go to Rivetmotors.com and you’ll see. And I’ve shot a documentary about it. I’m in the process of trying to sell it right now. We’ve got an astonishing number of hits while we were driving those eight days. We kept the Twitter feed alive and during that time, the figure I have is so astonishing, I don’t think it could be it. But it’s like a billion. And that’s the reason for this social media extravaganza. Kathleen? [Shatner muffles the phone while calling out to his assistant in the next room] So that’s one billion? One point three billion media impressions? We see that from $1,500,000? Incredible.

MT: Talk to me about your Twitter feed [@WilliamShatner]. Is it really you snapping all of those one-liners back and forth? Because I really do enjoy it.

MT: Okay last question: it seems that we’re on the cusp of extended life expectancy. If you could live long and prosper, say to 300 years old, would you?

WS: Yeah. Glad you enjoy it. You do enjoy it, right?

WS: Well, with certain caveats, like health? If all caveats are ok, sure. Different professions, different lives, you’d continue on in years, but you’d reorganize yourself every so often. Same dog! You have to have the same dog, but that’s it. ■

MT: So tomorrow [Dec. 18] is a big day. I think many in the world like to think of you as the leader of Team Star Trek and Team Star Wars is having an enormous day. How will you spend it? WS: I’ll spend it praying to the God of J.J. Abrams that he does the same for Star Wars as for Star Trek. MT: So you’re happy with his work with Star Trek ?

aptain Kirk beams down to Maui next Wednesday, Dec. 30. At 83, William Shatner–star of Star Trek, T.J. Hooker, Rescue 911, Boston Legal, S#*! My Dad Says and those Priceline commercials–is the latest to headline the Maui Celebrity Series. The living legend who began his career in radio will spend an evening with comedian Paul Rodriguez and crooner Brian Evans entertaining us at the Sheraton Maui Resort in Ka‘anapali. Shatner and I talked story last week, when comedian Louie Anderson was still part of the act (last-minute lineup changes brought in Rodriguez). Enjoy!

WS: I don’t know whether the word is proud. I’m grateful that I’m around and performing. I’m out these days on a one-man show.

MAUITIME: It’s such an honor to have you on the phone here today.

MT: I’ve read rumors on the Internet you may be doing something with Stan Lee? Any truth to this?

WILLIAM SHATNER: Well, thank you. I appreciate you saying that. MT: I wanted to talk to you about your show here on Maui. What are we to expect from you? Is it a singing and dancing thing? Or a spoken word? Or talk story? WS: No dancing. Brian’s going to sing, Louie is going to be funny and I’m going to be somewhere in between. I’ll not be as funny as a Louie and I won’t sing as well as Brian. How’s that? The three of us are getting together for an hour and a half of entertainment at the Sheraton and it will be a fun evening. MT: Can we expect any classics like “Rocket Man?” WS: Brian suggested we sing “It Was a Very Good Year,” so we’ll do that. MT: Let’s talk about your career for a moment. Your career spans decades, you’ve starred in hundreds of projects. What work are you most proud of?

MT: What are you currently working on? WS: I opened on Broadway a while ago. And I’ve toured several cities and I toured Australia a couple of months ago. And now in late January, early February, I’ll be doing a number of American cities once more. So that’s going. I got a new series on television called Better Late Than Never, and I’m not sure when it’s going to go on. Maybe in the spring or maybe late this winter I’m not sure. But it’s on NBC.

MT: Yeah. What else are you working on?

MT: Oh, yeah. WS: I’m looking for a little feedback–it’s not too much? MT: No, it’s fine. I think the swipes you are taking are ok, but you need to be edgy for this medium, you know? But the second you pass the line, the Internet punishes you for it. WS: Exactly, so it’s that line that you have to be really careful of. And you’re feeling is it’s Ok?

WS: The Stan Lee thing is part of the Cinematic Graphic Novel–I’ve got a comic book. Ok, well it’s more than a comic book. I believe it’s a unique piece of entertainment that I’ve come up with and the team that I brought together to do it has really done fabulous work. It’s a camera moving through a comic book that has been drawn especially for this of a book that I wrote called Man of War. And it’s got music and sound effects and my narration. And you’ve got to read the bubbles. MT: I enjoyed your autobiography, Up Till Now. I actually listened to the Audible version of it back in 2008. Any new books coming out? WS: I’m working on a lot of things. I’ve got a book. Two books actually, coming out this coming year. The one that is coming out in February that I’m publicizing is called Leonard. It’s about my friendship with Leonard Nimoy and it’s about friendship in general.

Bentos! TJ’S WAREHOUSE IN WAILUKU REVIVES MAUI’S OKAZUYA PAST

bentos on the island. The okazuya opens at 9am Monday through Saturday, but the store itself opens at 7am when the tables are already full of breakfast bentos starting at $3.65–maki sushi rolls and spam musubi, all ready to go. TJ’s Warehouse has become a mecca for those looking for specialty Japanese products like baked goods, frozen foods, teas, noodles, sauces, candy and liquor. They even have Japanese shampoo, conditioner, cleaning supplies, kitchen gadgets, laundry gadgets, bento boxes, tea pots and toys. Kawasaki says one of his main purchasers is from Japan. They are always finding new vendors and try a lot of new products all the time, a process he says is just trial and error. They do public tastings at the store about twice

lar. Every month showcases a bento special like December’s salmon bento for $6.50. Everything is made in house and their prices are reasonable. After the morning and mid-afternoon bentos are sold out, they bring out wrapped individual servings of chicken katsu, miso butterfish, gyoza, egg rolls, teri beef, yakitori and chicken karaage for the late afternoon and evening rush. Refrigerated cases offer fresh daifuku, coconut cream mochi and freshly made desserts. They also have Chinese chicken salads, fruit salads, mac salads and salted cabbage. They will also make party trays of all kinds of dishes in all shapes and sizes. “Maui Chemical have been here for more than 20 years,” says Kawasaki. “The last 10 or so years we have been

kazuya are a dying breed of restaurant on Maui, but 40 years ago, they were a major player in grab-and-go food. Mostly run by families, they dotted the landscape in every town, selling bentos, musubi, maki and hot foods to go. The big supermarkets back then were Nagasako, Ooka, Ah Fooks and Shirokiya. While some of those stores may be gone, our desire to eat bento lives on. The two brothers at Maui Chemical and Paper Supply, Todd and Joel Kawasaki, saw this

as an opportunity for their own okazuya and Japanese market in Wailuku, which they call TJ’s Warehouse. “Maui Chemical always had a retail store,”says owner Joel Kawasaki. “In the beginning it started more as a way to showcase our products and grew into a party supply shop. Then when my brother Todd came back from college in 2004/2005. That is when he started overseeing the store and added the bentos and the food. It was part of his masters project. The name TJ’s comes from Todd and Joel.” TJ’s Warehouse is tucked into industrial Wailuku near restaurant supply stores, caterers, bakeries and auto mechanics. The location has some outdoor seating and the biggest selection of fresh-made

a month. Right now, the Christmas gift sets are really popular, and they are prepping for the New Year by bringing in lots of mochi and kadomatsu. One of the newer products that TJ’s Warehouse has is their weekday poke bowl special for $8.99. They have a seafood market and a poke bar with more than 10 kinds of poke (and seafood salads), at any given moment. To mix things up from their regular poke bowls (priced at $5.49 to $6.99 or $10.99), they offer a special daily deluxe creation. On Monday, for example, the California bowl has rice, California poke, masago, avacado, sesame seeds and Korean nori. On Thursday, the Shoyu Won Ton bowl includes rice, shoyu ahi, shoyu tako, ocean salad, wasabi sauce, won ton chips and bubu arare. As for hot foods, the chow fun, nishime and roast pork are very popu-

giving an emphasis on the Japanese products and food side. As we saw the closing of Shirokiya and some of the other stores like Ooka and Ah Fooks, we tried to fill that void and offer some of those oriental products. Our goal is serving the community as best we can. Trying to give them delicious reasonably priced goods everyday. As long as we can provide for our community, that is our number one priority.” TJ’s Warehouse has a loyalty card you can get in the store, and you can sign up to get their emailed newsletter, or go to their Facebook page to see their latest specials. In February, they do a Customer Appreciation Day with sampling, food giveaways and prizes. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

An Old Hope ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is enjoyable but not captivating ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 135 Min.

A

t no point during this movie review will I reveal or spoil any of the story points from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I managed to see the film without knowing major plot turns or surprise twists (and there are a few) and would love for filmgoers to have the same experience I did. On the other hand, I have to report that this movie, one of the most hyped of all time, is very good but not much more than that. My credentials as a Star Wars fan aren’t necessary to divulge but, since my positive but not glowing review of this massively attended film will unquestionably be met with derision, here they are: I was born the year Star Wars: A New Hope was released and seeing it in the theater is the earliest memory I have. Like many children of the 1980’s, I had the Star Wars action figures, bed sheets, posters and books and once went trick or treating in a homemade Darth Vader costume. I can recall that C-3PO’s Cereal was never as good as Captain Crunch but I still salivate for the taste of those long gone Pepperidge

Farms Star Wars Cookies. Particularly, the chocolate Vaders, which were scrumptious. I still have the framed Vader autograph I got from a mall signing (the picture is addressed to me and signed not by David Prowse but simply “Darth Vader, XO”). I once went on a long, late night road trip to the one movie theater in Colorado that projected the first trailer to The Phantom Menace (my friends and I sat through the three-hour Meet Joe Black to see a two minute, twelve second trailer.Yes, we were nerds). Like many film buffs, I don’t recall a time in my life when Star Wars wasn’t a saga with a permanent residence in my imagination. That’s a lot for a new movie to live up and, for the most part, The Force Awakens didn’t cut it. With measured expectations, however, it’s enjoyable and made with affection. Newcomer Daisy Ridley’s pluckiness carries the pokey first half. John Boyega’s highly touted performance and character are one-note but he’s got potential. Once Adam Driver genuinely creepy villain enters the movie (or rather, once we get to fully see him), he gives the film a kick it sorely needs. To no one’s surprise, Harrison Ford’s still got it as Han Solo, Chewbacca has never

stolen so many scenes before and Oscar Isaac can clearly carry this movie (strangely, he’s shoved into the background). The pacing is refreshingly laid back and reflects the 1977 original. However, this recycles much of A New Hope, in the same way Star Trek: Into Darkness recreated (with mixed results) the narrative of The Wrath of Khan. Even with some good twists and a few tragic moments, the story didn’t captivate me. This is better than a fan film but just slightly. Even with Lawrence Kasdan as a co-writer, the depth was not there. Why do we spend so much time with that character who resembles a Cheeto with glasses? I found the final scene to be anticlimactic and frustrating. There are characters standing around, waiting for something to do in the future sequels (Marvel movie

style). I found Andy Serkis’ CGI villain underwhelming and it sounds like John Williams was trying hard to avoid repeating himself, though his classic compositions were all I wanted to hear. Also, a main character gets a rushed, crash course lesson on becoming a Jedi that seems at odds with the established lore (yes, I’m still a nerd). The high point is the light saber battle in a snow crested wood. While the fight choreography in the prequels leaned heavily on martial arts and CGI enhanced flips, this offers more of a genuine fencing match and a test of strength. It’s the film’s best scene and it comes very late. I will be revisiting The Force Awakens but the only prior installment it fully surpasses is The Phantom Menace. There’s no Jar Jar Binks here but Yoda (and a genuinely fresh story) is sorely missed. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

If you’ve experienced real bliss–drug-induced or otherwise–you know that it would be an intolerable condition if it persisted for too long, just like agony. Most people prefer, overall, more subdued emotions, such as contentment, serenity, or satisfaction, just as irritation, mild soreness, or a low-level sting would be preferable to outright misery. Keep that in mind this week; in your hunt for more extreme states, you might get them–and realize they weren’t quite what you had in mind. Letting yourself be quietly serene isn’t settling for less–it’s getting what you actually wanted most, only didn’t know it. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Cue up the spotlights and the soundtrack. Places, everybody! We’ve got one take on this and that’s it. We either get it or we don’t. No pressure, though. I just don’t want you to take the upcoming performance too casually, because if you don’t give it your all–plus some you didn’t know you had–you’re not going to get anyone to suspend their disbelief. The consequences of such a disaster would be worse than a bad review or two. You’d practically be black-listed from your scene-making scene. No one’s going to buy a ticket to your show for ages. So get it right, or get out of the business (whichever business you’re in).

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Always a rough couple of weeks for you Cancers, the last two were exceptionally grueling and upsetting. At last, however, the mess is resolving itself; if not shifting towards a state of neatness, at least settling into entropic lassitude that promises not to explode again any time soon. With this week’s New Year’s celebrations and the resolutions that sometimes come with, you’ve got a chance to reorganize certain parts of your emotional and belief systems, hopefully in such a way that they’re unlikely to ever get quite this muddled again; here’s hoping future clutter remains more manageable.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

You’re loyal, not intransigent. That’s something less dynamic characters frequently misunderstand. The strongest bonds are resilient; they can stretch and grow in response to the forces exerted on or against them. Relationships and roles that are rigidly defined usually crumble when reality’s torque grows too intense. Try explaining this to those who don’t understand why you’re “not the same person” you were a year ago. Point out that this is a good thing–demonstrating the strength of your connection, not its weakness. They still may not be able to understand your reasoning; however, they have a better chance of doing so this week than any other.

tattoos by Rachel G

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You’re marvelously impractical–something that earns you barrels of criticism and pique. You’re used to receiving mostly negativity from your fellow humans, especially if they must cooperate with you on some task. Be it simple or complicated, from making dinner together to starting a business, you’re bound to frustrate folk, because you simply don’t do things the expected way, or even using methods that others can recognize or employ themselves. This week, however, your weird and wonderful ways should attract more positive attention than negative; those nearby will be more fascinated than critical by the circuitous routes your mind takes on its way anywhere.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Rules to abide by this week: 1. No whining. 2. No cursing fate. 3. No feeling sorry for yourself. It may seem like I’m steering you towards some kind of insincere stoicism (or worse, martyrdom), but I’m not. I just want you to realize that even though some of the things that happen to you this week are nothing like what you wanted, they are nevertheless precisely what you needed. There are many possible analogies, all of them too dramatic, but you get what I’m talking about. A little pain serves you better than pleasure could, so try to suffer serenely, if possible. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Why is it your fate to end up in circumstances that require frequent pride-swallowing and, in some cases, absolute surrender? Can you say you’ve mastered the ability to differentiate between situations that would merit from some guidance and control, and those that simply can’t (or shouldn’t) be steered in any direction? In case you haven’t yet figured it out, that’s the lesson you need to master. Until you do, expect to deep throat your ego at least a few more times.

I hope you make a New Year’s resolution more profound than: “I will never, ever, drink egg nog again.” While this arbitrary ritual of making improvements to your life on Jan. 1 (and at no other time) is pretty lame, it’s better than nothing. Therefore, I hope you gave it some in-depth consideration regarding issues beyond your most recent hangover. Here’s a juicy hint as to which evolutionary direction is likely to benefit you the most: 2016 is likely to be the year you figure out the love and romance thing, or you don’t (for at least five more years to come).

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

When you eventually settle back into your work routine, it’s with relief. Most Taureans find the holidays– and their requisite family obligations–both exhilarating and exhausting. Try to keep things in perspective, however. Your co-workers, in contrast to the family you’re tired of, might seem as immediately desirable as a steaming croissant, fresh from the oven. However, keep in mind that they’re the same highly imperfect folk you were nigh unto strangling a couple weeks ago, before you make promises to them you won’t want to keep in a couple more. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Four out of five Americans, at some point in their lives, suffer from spiritual constipation. These cases vary in seriousness, sometimes lasting only days, but occasionally persisting for years, or even decades. It’s nothing to be ashamed of; in fact, shame can lengthen and exacerbate the condition, because shame-based cases often go unaddressed for twice as long as they would be otherwise. People from all different faiths and belief systems get “stuck” sometimes, discovering that their emotional shit no longer moves, but just hangs around weighing them down. Luckily, you already know someone who can get things moving again. This week, call them Prune Juice and ask them to administer your cure.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Scorpios are stereotypically prone to meaningless infidelities. They’re also notorious for convincing themselves that once they get rid of the evidence, no harm’s been done. Trust has been violated, and it’s actually a painless, invisible (but nevertheless serious) wound until it’s exposed, later–at that point, it becomes obvious that it’s been festering so long that it might even be enough to kill the whole creature– namely, your relationship. Sooner is always, always better than later to reveal these things. If you’ve got a secret, know this: there will be NO good time to come clean; now’s better than any other.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Any perception that the cards are stacked against you is incorrect, and finds its source in pure defeatism. There is a part of you that wants to see you fail, to suffer, to die horribly. Everybody has some tiny piece of outrageous pessimism that wants to see itself proved right. Resistance to it, however, is not futile. It’s necessary. It’s more powerful than you think. Letting it decide that you’re in for nothing but shit will likely cause exactly that to happen. However, your innate optimism is more than enough to defeat or surmount any bad luck you might suffer–if you let it. Please do. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
