WEED WARS (Note: The following letters and comments represent some of those submitted in response to our Mar. 10, 2016 cover story “Don Shearer has been a drug warrior for 30 years–Now he wants to open a medical marijuana dispensary.”) Mahalo for exposing this infuriating travesty! Seriously give me a break! He can’t possibly be allowed to do that! Don Shearer wants to sell Marijuana, so he can now profit from the same folks who he spent years profiting from criminalizing and ruining their lives. How despicable it would be if this man is granted a license! I will personally initiate a massive social media campaign, and round up everyone I can to boycott and picket in front of his dispensary with huge signs alerting the public that the owner of this shop is (or was) a DEA agent who took great pride in and profited from destroying many innocent, tax paying citizens & friends lives! -Fred Spanjaard, via email

Even hypocrites need to make a living! -Joe Ritter, via Facebook

is over I’ll gladly raise a glass to Don and his team... although at this time I dislike much of what he admits they’ve been doing here for decades. Prohibitionists have destroyed much of what was beautiful about Hawaii back in the day. They’ve driven many people into poverty, the meth epidemic, homelessness, crime and worse while enriching themselves. Now they even get to apply for dispensaries when felons are denied access to apply. “We the people” sadly waste so much of our power when we could have had legal Cannabis long ago by doing basic citizen’s work together. Silence = consent and “We the people” have been way too silent for way too long. I hope this revealing article wakes people up to take more positive actions in the future. Here’s to much better days ahead. God, that’s great! Please show us the blessings in THIS situation... and hurry! We are safe, we are loved and all is well. -Roger Christie, via Mauitime.com

That guy should NOT be considered for the dispensary. I will boycott and spread the word. Grateful meds my ass. Hateful meds. Unscrupulous on many levels -Zorg, via Mauitime.com

Aloha. Life’s a play and we’re all playing a part (or more). My spiritual practice is to recognize and support the humanity in everyone; even prohibitionists like Don, as hard as that can be sometimes for me to do. At the cast party when this play

Good lord lighten up people. The people that were growing earlier were breaking the law especially those that were growing on land owned by someone else. He was doing a job, big deal. SHAKA MOVEMENT ORGANIZERS TO LAUNCH NEW VOTER INITIATIVES

Senator Hirono

HAWAII CONGRESSIONAL REPS TAKE ON GMO LABELING

Earth Science and Technology, he told us his research indicated that climate change’s effects would happen faster and to a greater degree than most people realized (see “University of Hawaii Professor Richard Zeebe says climate change will be more severe than scientists originally thought,” Aug. 15, 2013). But on Mar. 21, UH sent out a press release on a new study co-authored by Zeebe in the journal Nature Geoscience is even scarier. “Their findings suggest humans are releasing carbon about 10 times faster than during any event in the past 66 million years,” states the news release. Zeebe and his fellow researchers were able to “determine the duration of the onset of an important past climate event, the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, PETM for short, 56 million years ago,” according to the news release. This allowed them to make a startling finding.

The people who brought you the SHAKA Movement may have moved on from GMOs these days, but the U.S. Congress is discussing GMO labeling. Specifically, a recent bill from Republicans (who in theory prefer state’s rights over federal control) to squash a recent Vermont law that mandated labeling foods that contain GMOs (the so-called “DARK Act”). This didn’t sit well with U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, D–Hawaii. “As a longtime advocate for consumer choice, I support a mandatory federal label that will allow families in Hawaii and across the country to make more informed decisions about the foods they choose to buy,” said Hirono in a Mar. 16 news release. “I opposed Senator [Pat] Roberts’ proposal because it would override state labeling laws and prevent states from being able to take future action on the issue without requiring a strong federal alternative. I look forward to considering alternative proposals that empower consumers.” That bill failed, 48-49. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–Hawaii’s 2nd District, took an even harder line on the bill. “The Senate’s vote against the DARK Act this week is a victory for American consumers, and a significant roadblock to big food corporations who are opposed to transparency for the American people,” Gabbard said in a Mar. 18 news release. “But make no mistake–this fight is not yet over. Until labeling of our food is mandatory, as it is in 64 other countries around the world, these companies and special interest groups will continue to try and strip away years of progress in food labeling laws made by states across the country in order to keep the American people in the dark. I call upon my colleagues to pass the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act, and its companion bill in the Senate (S.511), to give American consumers and families the right to make transparent, informed decisions about their health and safety.”

The SHAKA Movement’s antiGMO voter initiative worked so well that the group’s organizers are now cooking up two new bills. If you’ll recall your recent history, SHAKA got a bill prohibiting Monsanto from growing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on Maui approved for the 2014 ballot (a historic first!), then inspired thousands of residents who don’t seem to have previously shown any political interest to vote for the measure (quite possibly by convincing them that the bill would ban pesticides on Maui, even though the actual initiative did no such thing). The measure passed, but court challenges soon rendered it moot, then threw it out entirely, ruling that it wrongfully preempted state law. The two new measures, which come courtesy of a new organization called the Community Farmland Council (which includes SHAKA organizers Bruce Douglas and Dr. Lorrin Pang), are not GMO-related. But if they pass (and are held up by the courts, of course), they will radically change Maui’s political and economic landscape. The first measure, called the Community Organic Farmland Initiative, seeks to convert the island’s acreage currently dedicated to sugarcane (read: Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar lands) into “public agricultural parks.” The measure would call on the county to use eminent domain to buy the lands “at fair market value” (which would just about be the first time eminent domain has ever paid anything more than pennies on the dollar to property owners). “[O]f coarse [sic] these sugarcane lands should be owned just as the beaches, for the good of everyone, and taken care of and preserved for the health of future generations,” Pang is quoted as saying in a Mar. 18 Community Farmland Council email. Given that HC&S has already announced that they’re ceasing all sugarcane production by the end of this year and will embark on

“diversified agriculture,” it’s hard to know how this measure will inspire residents. Then there's the second measure. Called The District Voting Charter Amendment, that measure institutes “districtvoting” to the Maui County Council. “This would amend the Maui County Charter to change the way county council members are voted into office from the current at-large voting system to a 9 individual district voting system,” states the Mar. 18 press release. “The law sets up a commission to divide Maui County into 9 district[s] of equal population with public input. Given that the county’s current council districts had widely disparate populations, countywide voting made sense. But while redrawing the nine districts so their resident populations are about equal looks great on paper, but may make for some pretty funky looking borders.

Red clay band in deep-sea sediment cores marks the onset of the PETM

In any case, the organization will have to gather tens of thousands of signatures over the next couple of months if they want to get the measures on the November 2016 ballot. For more information, check out Mauicommunityfarmland.org.

UH RESEARCHER HAS SCARY NEWS When we last caught up with Richard Zeebe, a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s School of Ocean and

Overheard “We go five feet and fall. We go five feet and fall. After a few minutes of that, you’re done.”

“The rate of carbon release during the PETM was determined to be much smaller than the current input of carbon to the atmosphere from human activities,” stated the news release. “Carbon release rates from human sources reached a record high in 2014 of about 37 billion metric tons of CO2. The researchers estimated the maximum sustained carbon release rate during the PETM had to be less than 4 billion metric tons of CO2 per year–about one-tenth the current rate.” This means the climate change researchers are observing now is potentially the worst such event in the last 66 million years. “Everyone is focused on what happens by 2100,” Zeebe said in the news release. “But that’s only two generations from today. It’s like: If the world ends in 2100 we’re probably OK! But it’s very clear that over a longer timescale there will be much bigger changes.” How big is he talking about? Here’s the last line of the journal article’s abstract, which should give you some idea: “Also, future ecosystem disruptions are likely to exceed the relatively limited extinctions observed at the PETM.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

ane Sanders, the wife of U.S. Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, toured Maui on Monday, Mar. 22. After visiting the Pioneer Mill, she arrived at the Mill House in Waikapu at 6:30pm sharp. She spoke for about an hour and a half, talking about her and her husband’s views on many subjects such as GMOs, why her husband is running for President, climate change and continuing the political revolution. “I’m really pleased to be here representing Bernie,” she said to applause. “I like him, too.” There were about 200 people present, mostly a mix of young people and seniors. There was a long line to get in, and once in everyone got a blue wristband, kind of like when you go to a water park. Richard Maele DeLeon, who is running for the County Council seat representing South Maui, gave a Hawaiian greeting to Jane Sanders. “[Bernie Sanders] and I talked about him running for President way back in February, March, and I was a little reticent,” Jane said. “He made it very clear that his concern is that too much power is resting in the hands of too few people and it’s the people on top and the lobbyists in Washington that are not only making the decisions but they’re also determining what can be discussed… His feeling was that we either have to give up or show up and for him that meant running for President. His

feeling is that we need to create a government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Jane also talked about her husband’s views on agriculture. “Bernie is very committed to dealing with the issues of climate change,” she said. “And I know Hawaii is leading our nation in this. Agriculture is extremely important. I understand that in Hawaii, 80 percent of the food that you consume is being imported, which seems odd… Bernie has been a real friend to the family farmer, in our state and in our nation, so he’ll work very hard to try to help you with sustainable agriculture, agrotourism and any number of things but away from the GMOs.” On the matter of her husband’s political popularity, Jane spoke of Sanders’ campaign as something approaching a revolution. “This election is not just about voting [ Sanders] in for President,” she said. “We want that and it would move everything forward so much quicker. It’s also about building a movement, building a political revolution. So if he’s elected as President, or even if he isn’t, we have to keep this going. We have to keep people engaged.” Katie McMillan and Arianna Feinberg organized the event. The Hawaii Democratic Party’s Presidential Preference Poll takes place on Saturday, Mar. 26 at 1pm.■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

PBS Hawaii Presents will air a 30-minute film on Thursday, Mar. 31 at 8pm that follows mental health clients and their advocates through the Haleakala Crater in search of clarity and relief from social stigma. The film, Haleakala–A Trek for Dignity, was directed by mental health client Don Lane and produced by Tom Vendetti, PhD, an established documentary filmmaker. “Don and I made Haleakala–A Trek for Dignity as a part of a social movement to help rid stigma around the topic of mental illness and to demonstrate that those with mental illness are capable of extraordinary achievements,” said Vendetti, who is also Clinical Supervisor of Mental Health Kokua’s Maui offices. Lane, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, said he wants to speak to other people that may be experiencing mental illness and let them know that they are not alone. “People need to see that recovery is possible given the opportunity,” Lane said. Mental Health Kokua’s CEO Greg Payton said MHK was proud to support the documentary. “It symbolizes the resiliency of the human spirit,” Payton said about the film; MHK also is an associate producer of the film and a driving force that allowed the film to become a reality. Mental Health Kokua was founded in 1973 as a non-profit, Hawaii corporation, in which the mission is to assist people with mental health and related challenges, to achieve optimum recovery and functioning in the community.

million grant program to increase students’ readiness for college and careers. Gov. David Ige announced the STEM Education Programs initiative in January in partnership with Project Lead The Way (PLTW) and USA Funds as part of an effort to build the state’s innovation economy and workforce; PLTW is a nonprofit organization that provides a transformative learning experience for K-12 students and teachers across the U.S.; USA Funds is a nonprofit corporation that supports Completion With a Purpose, building a more purposeful path for America’s students to and through college and on to rewarding careers and successful lives. The multi-million dollar funding enables each school to implement PLTW high school programs in PLTW’s computer science, engineering and biomedical science pathways. Grant funds cover expenses such as program fees, teacher training at the University of Hawaii–West Oahu, and classroom equipment and supplies. “We are extremely grateful to USA Funds for making it possible for schools in Hawaii to implement PLTW’s programs,” said Rex Bolinger, senior vice president and chief development officer. “PLTW programs empower students to develop the knowledge and transportable skills they need to thrive in our advancing, high-tech economy.” By 2017, Hawaii is projected to need 16,000 more workers with STEM skills each year, but the state currently ranks 47th in the number of STEM-related degrees awarded per 100,000 residents. Dozens of additional Hawaii high schools will have the opportunity to implement PLTW programs after the organization opens a second round of grant requests from Hawaii schools this fall. “We look forward to thousands of additional students being prepared for highpaying jobs in high-demand STEM fields in Hawaii’s growing innovation economy,” said Carol D’Amico, USA Funds executive vice president, National Engagement and Philanthropy. “USA Funds is delighted

News Of The Weird TAKE THAT, PORTLAND! Seattle’s ambitious Office of Arts & Culture has allocated $10,000 this year to pay a poet or writer to create a work while present on the city’s Fremont Bridge drawbridge. The office’s deputy director told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in January that the city wants to encourage “public art” and that the grant will oblige the recipient to create a work of prose or poetry from the bridge’s Northwest tower, to help the people of Seattle understand the function of art in the city. (The artist will not be “in residence,” for the tower has no running water.)

The dominant-submissive lifestyle soared to higher-brow status in February when The New York Times reported on the recent marriage of the celebrated composer of “moody, queasy” works (and compulsive dominant) Georg Friedrich Haas to Mollena Williams, who blogs introspectively about her own kinky bondage as “The Perverted Negress.” Friedrich had introduced himself to her on a dating site with the note, “I would like to tame you,” and credits her acceptance for his improved productivity–because, he said, “I am not (any longer) disturbed by unfulfilled thoughts.” Although Williams-Haas is a black woman submitting to a white man, she explained that, “To say I can’t play my personal psychodrama out just because I’m black, that’s racist.”

In its brand-new communications stylebook this year for city workers, San Diego officials noted that the city’s then-upcoming Presidents’ Day announcements should, to be bias-free and inoffensive, never refer to America’s “Founding Fathers”–even though they were all males–but only to “founders.”

The roadside billboard giant Clear Channel Outdoor Americas announced in February that it would soon be recording the cellphone locations of drivers who pass the company’s signs in 11 cities in order to give advertisers more information on how to pitch products to people with those particular travel patterns and behaviors. Clear Channel asserts that no individual identifications would be sought, but privacy advocates fret about potential abuses, and even a Clear Channel executive acknowledged that the program “does sound a bit creepy.” (On the other hand, as Clear Channel pointed out to The New York Times, cellphone users’ locations and characteristics are already being extensively monitored by advertisers.)

THIS WEEK IN CANNABIS SUPPOSITORIES “Medical” marijuana will take on a new meaning soon if the Food and Drug Administration approves Foria Relief cannabis vaginal suppositories for relieving menstrual pain (from the California company Foria). Currently, the product is available only in California and Colorado, at $44 for a four-pack. The company claims the inserts are targeted to the pelvic nerve endings, but International Business Times, citing a gynecologist-blogger, noted that the only studies on the efficacy of Foria Relief were done on the uteruses of rats.

THE UNUSUAL SUSPECTS A then-married couple, both graduates of elite California law schools, were convicted of felonies and went to jail briefly two years ago for a criminal scheme inexplicably tawdry–and in February 2016 lost a resultant civil lawsuit for $5.7 million to the scheme’s victim. A woman at their child’s school had referred to the lawyers’ son as “slow,” enraging Kent Easter (University of California at Berkeley) and then-wife, Jill (UCLA), who retaliated by planting drugs and paraphernalia in Kelli Peters’ car and then, a man identified via circumstantial evidence as Kent (with an accent as if from India), called in a DUI tip to police, resulting in Peters’ arrest. According to Peters, neither perpetrator has ever expressed remorse, and although Kent admitted to “stupidity,” he now complains that Peters does not deserve her windfall (like a “Powerball winner,” he said).

HOW PORN SAVES WHALES The online-pornography colossus Pornhub’s charity fundraising promotion during February benefited the Moclips Cetological Society (“Save the Whales”) in honor of World Whale Day on Feb. 13. Its news release celebrated whales’ sexuality–that they, like humans, do not limit their horniness to procreation. The company said it would, from Feb. 8 to Feb. 29, donate a penny for every 2,000 videos played on its ubiquitous free websites. (That offer might appear modest, but a Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporter noted, over the first two days, the world’s porn consumers had played 532 million videos–earning the charity $2,660.)

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Vicky Leyton, 72, announced her retirement recently in Benidorm, Spain, over health concerns, but the lady’s 30-year run in her one-of-a-kind, “Sticky Vicky” magic show can hardly be forgotten by the 6 million fans who have witnessed it. Trained as a ballerina but emulating magicians who pull rabbits out of top hats, Vicky extracted an impressive array of items, also–from the body cavity that is occasionally the subject of News of the Weird stories. One review in Spain’s El Pais newspaper described a typical inventory: fluffy flags, flowers, ping-pong balls, sausages, eggs, a string of razor blades, a bottle and a light bulb (that was aglow!). ■

t was, hands down, the worst day of the year for me. I had just finished a session with my counselor on PTSD. The morning was dark and sad, but I had to take care of some things at Office Max. As I was leaving, I smiled because I saw your adorable, fluffy puppy. But then the moment was ruined with your bitter sarcasm. “What’s the matter–haven’ you ever seen a puppy before?” you asked me. Sometimes, humans should just shut up and let animas be therapeutic. Next time, I will tell you how cute your dog is because it’s obvious that you need the attention more than it does. I know it’s a lot to ask, but I hope your dog teaches you compassion and aloha, because you need to grow up. Share the love! ■

I

t’s not the trash fire that marks this year’s Republican Party effort to pick a presidential candidate, but the race to be the 2016 Democratic Party nominee is anything but dull. While the Republicans knock each other over as to who can get the most votes by playing up racist fears against minorities, Muslims and Mexico, Democrats Hillary Clinton (former First Lady, Senator and Secretary of State) and Bernie Sanders (current U.S. Senator from Vermont) are battling it out over which one has better reforms for college tuition, banking and energy policy. Clinton currently leads Sanders in the delegate count (1,214 pledged delegates to Sanders’ 911, at press time), but he’s by no means out of the race. In fact, Sanders doesn’t have to win the nomination to enact change–

10 MARCH 24, 2016

his mere presence, and that of the thousands and thousands of people voting for him–are more than enough impetus to pull Clinton even further to the left of the political spectrum, should she be the eventual nominee. In any case, Hawaii Democrats will get their say in the state party’s Presidential Preference Poll at 1pm on Saturday, Mar. 26 (go to Hawaiidemocrats.org to find your polling place). It’s like a caucus, but uses a secret ballot, and you have to be a registered Democrat to take part (you can register at your polling site). Doing a full comparison between Clinton and Sanders would fill a book, but here are 20 things I thought might help make the choice a bit clearer.

1.

What many people don’t realize is that on a lot of rather important issues, Clinton and Sanders are advocating

the same things. They both want to see equal pay, universal pre-kindergarten and paid family leave. They both oppose the infamous Citizens United court decision and want more SuperPAC disclosure. They both support the DREAM Act for immigration reform and oppose both the Keystone Pipeline and the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). In fact, FiveThirtyEight says during the two years when both Clinton and Sanders were in the U.S. Senate, they voted the same way 93 percent of the time.

caucuses–and, thus, pledged delegates–than Sanders. It doesn’t mean Sanders has lost, though it does mean he has to start winning races, many of which dole out their delegates proportionally, by pretty substantial margins. Even Sanders’ recent “historic” win in Michigan only netted him seven more delegates than Clinton, according to the Associated Press. His recent wins in Idaho and Utah are encouraging, but only netted him an additional 41 pledged delegates.

2.

3.

Sanders, though not trailing by a huge margin, has a tough fight ahead of him. The reason isn’t because the party’s infamous “superdelegates” are already in Clinton’s pocket (in reality, superdelegates can alter their support–as they did in 2008). No, the reason is that Clinton has been winning more primaries and

Sanders is doing exceptionally well with young Democrats (especially those under 29, according to FiveThirtyEight), while Clinton’s supporters skew a bit older. There are many explanations for this, but some of which might simply be that young people tend to be more radical in their views about everything.

need new rules on the allowable use of force.” But both candidates support police body cameras and oppose private prisons.

4.

Clinton has major backing in Hawaii from the kinds of interest groups and organizations that historically make up the Democratic Party here. Prominent, powerful Japanese-American leaders support her (like former Hawaii Governor George Ariyoshi, who said “Hillary Clinton has shown time and again she is committed to breaking down the barriers that hold us back and to making a real difference in people’s lives.”) Recently, nearly a hundred prominent Filipino-Americans in Hawaii gave her the nod, including former Hawaii Governor Ben Cayetano.

5.

Also, both U.S. Senators Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz, as well as U.S. Rep. Mark Takai of Honolulu, have endorsed Clinton. “Hillary Clinton’s record of addressing climate change, protecting the environment and promoting clean energy as well her personal connections to Hawaii and the Pacific led to my endorsement of her presidential candidacy,” Sen. Schatz said in a Mar. 17 statement released by the Clinton campaign.

6.

7.

Much has been made of Clinton’s distant past as a Republican activist (specifically, she was a “Goldwater Girl” campaigning for right-wing Senator Barry Goldwater) in 1964, but Sanders only became a Democrat last year. Indeed, Sanders has been running as an Independent since 1980s, when his political career began. Though he usually caucuses with the Democrats, Sanders has been an Independent in Congress dating back to his first win in 1990.

18.

14.

19. 20.

8.

Clinton is clearly not a political animal like her husband, former President Bill Clinton. This can be a good thing, but it also means that sometimes Clinton just says stupid things, like when Nancy Reagan died recently. For reasons known only to her, Clinton praised Reagan for drawing attention to AIDS, when, in fact, Reagan and her husband famously ignored the dreadful disease, even as it was killing thousands of Americans.

9.

Though Clinton apologized for her comments a few days after she spoke (“While the Reagans were strong advocates for stem cell research and finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, I misspoke about their record on H.I.V. and AIDS,” she said. “For that, I’m sorry.”), this kind of thing has happened before. In fact, 20 years ago she favorably referenced a now-discredited theory about urban crime that was little more than racism directed against African-Americans. “They are often the kinds of kids that are called ‘superpredators,’ “Clinton said in a 1996 speech about crime. “No conscience, no empathy, we can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel.”

10.

But she apparently doesn’t feel that way today. Challenged on that statement at a campaign event a few weeks ago by a young AfricanAmerican activist, Clinton refused to apologize. But when The Washington Post asked her for a comment on the event and her old assertion, she issued a statement saying she regretted using those words. “Looking back, I shouldn’t have used those words, and I wouldn’t use them today,” Clinton told the paper.

11.

Clinton is generally more hawkish than Sanders. On Afghanistan, for instance, Sanders wants a complete pull-out of U.S. troops while Clinton would keep a few thousand troops in the war (she also famously supported the Iraq War, at least initially).

15.

But Sanders is not a dove. In fact, he’s not even a true “socialist,” which is his preferred way of explaining his ideology. A Feb. 8 Daily Beast story outlined Sanders’ love for the ruinously expensive and most likely useless F-35 fighter jet, and quoted numerous actual socialist publications that despise him. “He behaves more like a technofascist disguised as a liberal, who backs all of President Obama’s nasty little wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen,” Thomas Naylor wrote in the leftist journal Counterpunch. “Since he always ‘supports the troops,’ Sanders never opposes any defense spending bill. He stands behind all military contractors who bring much-needed jobs to Vermont.”

16.

Sanders opposes the use of coal for energy, and at first, Clinton did too–even to the point of boasting that her plan would “put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” But then West Virginia Democrats howled in protest, and Clinton issued a statement a few days later saying that “coal will remain part of the energy mix for years to come.”

17.

Sanders wants to bring back the U.S. Banking Act of 1933. Popularly known as the GlassSteagall Act, it prevented big banks from acting as investment firms and was dumped in 1999. Clinton, who has long been derided for her cozy ties to Wall Street (in 2015, she infamously and incredibly invoked the 9/11 terrorist attacks during a debate when needled by Sanders over the contributions she’s taken from big banks and investment firms) opposes

This isn’t to say that Clinton just wants to let Wall Street run wild. She has called for more regulation and taxation of Wall Street firms–moderate moves, to be sure, especially considering that Sanders has called for the outright breaking up of the big financial institutions. On Social Security, Clinton wants to protect it, while Sanders wants to expand it.

Then there’s marijuana. Sanders has said he’s fine with letting the states decide whether to legalize it (basically, what’s going on right now), while Clinton rejects straight legalization in favor of lessening the criminal penalties associated with it. Neither candidate has advocated complete legalization at the federal level. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

HAWAII’S SUPERDELEGATES Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are competing on Mar. 26 for Hawaii’s 24 pledged delegates. But the state also has 10 superdelegates, some of which have already picked a candidate. The history of the party’s superdelegates only goes back to the 1980s or so. Party leaders like them because it grants them a great deal of authority over nominee selection. But their ultimate commitment is never absolute– especially this early in the campaign. Here’s a list of Hawaii’s superdelegates, as well as who’ve they’ve endorsed (or if they’re still uncommitted): • Tulsi Gabbard (Sanders) • Mazie Hirono (Clinton) • Brian Schatz (Clinton) • Mark Takai (Clinton) • David Ige (Uncommitted) • Shan Tsutsui (Clinton) • Jadine Nielsen (Clinton) • Stephanie Ohigashi (Uncommitted) • Doug Pyle (Uncommitted) • Russell Okata (Uncommitted)

Of course, Sanders can be racially insensitive, too. During a recent Democratic debate in Flint, Michigan, Sanders seemed to say that whites can have racial “blind spots” because they “don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto. You don’t know what it’s like to be poor.” To equate being African-American with living in poverty is of course outrageous. Sanders attempted to apologize, but even that was problematic. “What I meant to say, is when you talk about ghettos, traditionally what you’re talking about is African-American communities,” he said.

One of only a handful of sitting congressional representatives, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii’s 2nd District (and a major in the Hawaii Army National Guard) endorsed Sanders. In fact, she resigned from her position in the Democratic National Committee when she did so (it wasn’t a popular move there, as you might guess). Her reasoning stemmed from Sanders’ noninterventionist foreign policy. “We need a Commander in Chief who has foresight and good judgment,” she said in her Feb. 28 announcement. “Who understands the need for a foreign policy which is robust in defending the safety and security of the American people. Who will not waste precious lives and money on interventionist wars of regime change. Such counterproductive wars undermine our national security and economic prosperity.” (At press time, South Maui Rep. Kaniela Ing also said he’s backing Sanders.)

13.

Hillary Clinton’s favorite movies are The Wizard of Oz, Casablanca and Out of Africa. I wasn’t able to find out Sanders’ favorite movies, though I did learn that in 1999, Sanders played the role of Rabbi Manny Shevitz in the movie My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception (look it up!).

Hillary!

this, saying Glass-Steagall wouldn’t have prevented the financial meltdown of 2007-2008.

12.

That being said, Sanders advocates a great deal more checks on police powers than Clinton. “We must demilitarize our police forces so they don’t look and act like invading armies,” Sanders says on his campaign website. “We

the Lebanese yogurt which I had never tried. The homemade granola on top stole the attention with great texture and flavor. I had drank way too much coffee so it was time to balance it out with a sandwich. The melty hot bacon panini hit the spot with roma tomato and guacamole. Ghantous said she originally kept the truck hours longer past lunch but decided to make a change. “When I first bought the truck, it was called ‘Surf Dog,’” she says. “The former owners kept it open from 7am to 2pm. I just felt the idea of being here ‘til two wasn’t going to serve me. I decided to break up the schedule by doing school lunches at Waldorf and Roots. Waldorf had a food truck doing lunches but the prices were too high, like $12. I could bring it to around $6 or $7. It turns out being a full schedule for the truck and I love the kids.” She shops at farmers market to get fresh produce for her school lunch menus offering salads, and warm dishes like brown

anessa Ghantous says she is not a morning person but you can’t tell from her chipper greetings to her customers at her coffee food truck Gypsy Maui. The truck opens at 7:30am at the Kulamalu Longs and serves a variety of coffee, tea, smoothies and breakfast bites. “I wanted to start a restaurant business,” says Ghantous. “I consulted with a realtor who told me that I would need $100,000 in the bank for anyone to rent a commercial space to me. I didn’t have that so I was feeling defeated by the whole thing. I couldn’t afford any commercial space. Then I found this truck, the owners were moving and wanted to sell. I considered that there wasn’t a lot of food on the menu so that might be a good way to start. There was less overhead and risk in coffee. I decided to go for it. Once I had it all together and opened up I quickly realized that it is 50 percent food and 50 percent truck.

when the truck breaks down you can’t open it ‘til it’s fixed!” She opened Gypsy Maui last September after purchasing the truck from the former owners, who were running it as a hot dog and coffee truck. She tweaked the concept a bit, but kept it six days a week at the Kulamalu Longs. “When I first opened I had a lot more food on the menu, but people were just showing up for coffee,” says Ghantous. “I mean that’s really what they were here for. So I pulled back on the menu, to focus on having more variety on the coffee.” One of Ghantous’ specialties is the Gypsy Coffee, a spin-off of the popular bulletproof coffee trend. She takes two shots of espresso and blends it with coconut oil, buffalo butter, maple syrup and cinnamon. The result is a coffee with the consistency of cocoa. It’s a bit thicker, and it looks like it has cream in it but that’s just the emulsion of coffee, coconut oil and the rich butter. The maple syrup takes the edge off of the bitter, but the coffee isn’t sweet. “I did a little bit of research to get the general gist of the bulletproof coffee,” says Ghantous. “I never drank it myself. I

had a few friends that were following an Ayurvedic diet using ghee and other people following the coconut oil craze, so I was inspired to try both of those concepts in this coffee. I experimented to get the consistency right, and added a touch of maple.” People are crazy for it, in the short time I was there she had several orders from regulars. “All the different coffees on my menu are made with fresh ground beans, and made Americano style,” says Ghantous. “I don’t want to have any coffee sitting. First, this style is more consistent. Second, on a truck you have to be really concerned with the amount of stuff you have back here, and how you are going to wash it, and how much of that is going to tax the water tank. We only have a certain number of gallons.” Her water is filtered five times before it makes it to your coffee. Ghantous likes to experiment with her coffee menu. She offers a Marigold coffee–a dark chocolate mocha coffee with cayenne spices, and a vanilla spice coffee with ginger cloves cin-

namon nutmeg, and a Formation coffee with organic chicory. “In the mornings I have the basics, banana bread, toasted bagels with cream cheese,” she says. “I have a bacon cheddar panini, a chicken pesto panini. I used to have oatmeal, but nobody orders that. The biggest thing I have learned about this is that even though I think it’s a great idea if people aren’t looking for that item, there is no point making it. Everything that I have on the menu is because it is what people are asking for. I have a soup. I have a parfait. I use Lebanese yogurt, it’s not as sour as greek. I make a berry puree instead of using whole berries, and I use homemade granola from Katie Caccamo of Katie’s Gourmet Kitchen.” I sipped on all the specialties coffees but loved the Formation with chicory best, it brought back memories of New Orleans. She gets all her coffee from Maui Grown Coffee in Lahaina, it’s grown on the West Maui Mountains above Ka‘anapali. The parfait was incredibly creamy and smooth from

rice and teriyaki chicken, plus smoothies and a few other options for kids. She said surprisingly, salads are a favorite. It’s a pretty modern operation, kids get the menu the week ahead, and text her their orders in and pay with their credit cards. She says they like her food and are really excited about having different options available to them. She goes to Waldorf on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Wednesdays at Roots. Saturdays at the Kulamalu center are her busiest days with the popular farmer’s market going on. Gypsy Maui serves up their coffees and bites every day but Sunday from 7:30am to 9:30am. “I drink a lot of coffee and honestly I think our coffee is really good,” she says. “I make everything to order, and I think that makes a difference in our flavor. People really don’t mind the wait and I try to be fast.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

That farm continues to grow persimmon today, and many of their 500 trees–now 80 or even 90 years old–were planted by her. Today her son clark runs the family persimmon farm while his wife Jackie has a line of value-added products: persimmon scone mix, persimmon jam, butters and salad dressing. Hanako’s other son Howard runs the family vegetable farm. Hanako is proud of the fact that she put all five of her children through college by pioneering in agriculture, and continues to work on the farm.

His grandfather started the Nobriga Ranch in Kahakuloa in 1930, and Buddy has served as president of the ranch since 1981. As an advocate of cattle ranchers, Nobriga helped form the Maui Cattleman’s Association in 1970, serving as its president for 10 years. In 1971, Nobriga’s father Manuel retired as president of Maui Soda and Ice Works, and Buddy took over that job. dividuals and their families have made huge contributions to agriculture on our island over the years. Pardee Erdman of Ulupalakua Ranch; David “Buddy” Nobriga of Maui Soda & Ice Works and Nobriga’s Cattle; and Hanako Hashimoto of Hashimoto Persimmon Farm. All three individuals have strong connections to the land that span generations. Nobriga’s interest in West Maui’s environment was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2009 for his 54 years of service to West Maui Soil and Conservation District. His work has created the Honolua watershed, ocean clean-up efforts in Kahana, and work on the Lahaina Watershed. Nobriga also served and held positions with Board of Water Supply, Federal Land Bank Association, Department of Agriculture and the State Water Commission. Then there’s Pardee Erdman, who’s spent his life shaping the leeward slopes of Haleakala. His vision for the Ulupalakua Ranch shaped the future of the Upcountry region with environmental restoration, conservation, reforestation and watershed partnerships. Erdman worked with The Nature Conservancy and Hawaii Islands Land Trust. Of the ranch’s 22,000 acres, 11,300 have been established as an agricultural conservation easement. Erdman is also known for collaborating with Emil Tedeschi in planting the first grapes on the slopes of Haleakala in the 1970s for what is now the Maui Winery. When Maui Pine closed in 2009, Erdman and a group of investors formed Hali‘imaile Pineapple Company to continue pineapple production under the trade name Maui Gold Pineapple Company. Erdman also has a hand in the Maui Cattle company. In addition to cattle, they raise elk and sheep for the Ulupalakua Ranch Store. Erdman’s sons Chris and Sumner continue to work at the ranch. The event starts at 8am on Saturday, April 2 on the festival grounds with a buffet breakfast of pancakes, breakfast meats, eggs, fruit, coffee and juice. Along with the breakfast the event will include bingo and prizes like a Sunday brunch for two and a stay-cation at Ka‘anapali Beach Hotel. Other prizes will be gift certificates to restaurants like Leilani’s on the Beach, Hula Grill, Star Noodle, and Duke’s. Breakfast

THIRD WORLD & LUCIANO to play on Maui!! The summer begins as Maui Tropical Plantation plays host to the biggest concert event of the year — ”Reggae Summit Hawaii”. This state-wide tour comes to Maui on June 25th, and features from Jamaica, reggae mega-star — Third World and “Jah Messenjah” Luciano. For over 4 decades, Third World has performed for audiences all across the globe, and is arguably the most respected reggae band in the world. Among their vast accomplishments, they remain the only reggae band in the business awarded the United Nations Peace Medal on the steps of the Capitol in Washington D.C. in 1993. Luciano is considered by many as the only authentic successor to Bob Marley, regarding his lyrical content and stage delivery. This artist performed in his only Hawaii appearance sharing the stage with Bunny Wailer in 2004, an event the Maui News Weekly regarded as historical. “Reggae Summit Hawaii” promises to exude a standard of excellence in reggae music long overdue in Hawaii, and sponsor Transmission Technology of Hilo & Kailua-Kona Hawaii proudly presents the best in the world. Tickets go on sale in April, and will be available island-wide and online. Local listings and media will provide further details. Simply a Premiere Event!!

Kids These Days ‘Allegiant’ is a high-tech pile of disappointment ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 121 Min.

W

hen Star Wars came out in 1977, it immediately became a cinema landmark and a giant blockbuster. A slew of lavish copycats followed from major studios, including The Black Hole, Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Moonraker. The same goes for Harry Potter, the king of the YA movie adaptations, which spawned the respectable Hunger Games movies and the hideous Twilight franchise. Seriously kids, in a few years, you’ll be embarrassed to find that Team Edward shirt you once bought at Hot Topic, left abandoned at the bottom of your sock drawer. After a promising first entry, The Divergent Series is inching closer and closer to Edward and Bella territory. Eragon, all is forgiven. The message of Allegiant is that it’s okay to be different, which is ironic for a movie that tries so desperately to be like so many other movies that worked. The third chapter in The Divergent Series resembles Oblivion, Logan’s Run, Star Wars, Minority Reporty and an Ambercrombie and Fitch ad but never

develops into anything fresh. Rather than justifying its reason for being, it just sits there and invites readers of the Veronica Roth books it’s based on to, once again, drop their money and walk out disappointed. The plot: Tris (Shailene Woodley) and her Teen Choice Award for Best Hottieworthy co-stars once again push back against their oppressive futuristic world and discover what has become of Chicago. More importantly, the cool dream sequences that distinguished these movies are absent and none of this is ever as compelling as The Maze Runner. The best word to describe the performances is blank. No one seems to be pushing very hard and not a single actor steps up and takes charge of this flashy but thoroughly uninteresting time killer. Woodley’s performance in Divergent demonstrated that she could carry her own film and how much the camera loved her. She should have bailed this franchise when she had the chance. Insurgent, the woeful second installment, showcased her as an unconvincing action star while sporting Keri Russell’s second season Felicity haircut. Here, she mostly stands around in stylish attire, reacting to lifelessly delivered monologues

Kids with guns–what could go wrong?

about DNA. Woodley has a role in Oliver Stone’s Snowden later this year but for the moment, I’m worried about her career. There are exceptions but YA movies have a tendency to bring out the worst in actors. She and her co-stars share an eerie quality: they’re all great looking movie stars who give bad performances. Hunky Theo James seemingly used up his charisma allotment after the first movie and now confuses brooding with performing (sorry but you’re Theo James, not James Dean). Likewise, Miles Teller’s “comic relief ” wore out its welcome two movies ago and Maggie Q, Octavia Spencer and Ansel Elgort look stranded. The most painful thing to witness is Jeff Daniels, playing this movie’s equivalent of the great and powerful Oz, doing an impression of Jeff Daniels

mannequin. Arguably even worse is Naomi Watts, performing at a level of a bad high school play. It’s not a surprise that the young actors can’t elevate this material but when Daniels and Watts go down with the ship, I give up. The movie looks great and the music score is one of those helpful orchestrations that almost fools you into thinking the movie you’re watching is actually exciting. There’s far too much CGI and many scenes appear to have been shot in front of a blue screen, as the actors seem unimpressed by the far-out settings. Yet, the special effects are much more lively than the people on screen. It seems next summer will bring us the final installment of this currently flatlining movie series. I can hardly wait... for Star Wars: Episode VIII, that is. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Screw modesty, selflessness, and moderation. Yeah, that’s right. I know. I can’t believe I’m telling you this, either. Advising an Aries to throw all restraint to the winds is dangerous! Nevertheless, that’s exactly what I’m suggesting, especially when it comes to expressing your (perhaps belated) birthday wishes. You’re (astonishingly) likely to aim too low. You’ve got a gargantuan metaphorical credit limit with friends, family, and coworkers right now, no money down, no interest. Don’t waste it by asking for lollipops and stickers. You’re not a kid anymore; you need some bigger toys.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

You’re a very communicative creature; you talk a lot, so you’re quite good at it. And you’re already a better listener than most. But you could still improve. You know that you still filter what you hear, somewhat unconsciously. That’s bullshit you’re better off without, and this is just the week to begin shedding it. It’s like you’re wearing glasses that are making everything blurry and screwed up, only you’ve spent a lot of time assuming that’s just the way the world was, or consoling yourself that at least your lenses weren’t as thick as most people’s. There’s no excuse for not striving for greater clarity if it’s available–and this week, it is.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

You’re not usually obsessive, but you walk the line sometimes. Let’s just say that you’re incredibly persistent and consistent. These are often good qualities, but I bet you can name two areas where manifesting them isn’t exactly healthy or positive. You can see where I’m headed, can’t you? This week, make a few minor but significant changes along these lines. This should be easy, since it involves relaxing and letting go–which you’re actually quite good at. You’ve simply never tried to ease up regarding these particular people or situations. Now, my dear, is the time to try.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Are you sick? I hope not. However, I’m compelled to point out that you’re not exactly making much of an effort to avoid becoming ill. It’s better late than never, and better now than later; examine your habits and see if you can figure out three substantial improvements that will make you feel healthier. Even just cutting down on fat, sugar, alcohol, or all three, would help keep you vivaciously alive. If all that’s just too damn hard, the least you can do is change you attitude. Smile more. I’m not joking. It’ll actually help (just a little).

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Weirdly enough, the people who are likely to matter most to you right now are ones who aren’t generally very important in your life. No one you consider family–either by blood or choice–is likely to figure too largely in the most significant events of the week. The ones to keep your eye on are those in close proximity–through work, mutual friends, or other circumstances–but who you never (or rarely) think about. They’ve got stuff to say and things to do that will actually make quite a bit of difference in how you live your life in the next couple of weeks, for good or ill. So pay attention when they drop hints and clues. For once, they’re actually important.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

I spend way too much time counseling you to consider your future and set yourself up right. This week, forget all that shit. It’s back to your natural state: enjoy the moment, without regard for what it means, or will mean. Especially when it comes to screwing; don’t even think about whether your current tryst is a one-night stand, a rebound, or a potential life partner. Just have fun, and lots and lots of sex. You’ll never be this young again, so I advise you to enjoy it. Trust your heart and your body. They rarely steer you wrong (and when they do, it’s almost always a blast). CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Work, work, work. It’s not all you ever do, although occasionally it may feel like it. Actually, you’ve got it pretty easy, especially compared to those overachieving Capricorns and Virgos. However, there are times when it’s important to focus on whatever’s paying the bills, to the apparent detriment of the rest of your life. It’s not really as shitty as it sounds: Your job is the key to enjoying many other aspects of your existence, whether or not you dig it in and of itself. If there’s a way to get more out of your work without putting much more in (and there is), I say take it.

Your house is a mess. I don’t mean that exactly literally; you Caps are generally fairly spartan, neat folk. What I mean is that it’s not comfortable–you don’t view it as a retreat, a haven; at the moment, it’s just someplace to keep your stuff and catch some sleep every now and then. That isn’t good. The next big stress crunch, you’ll have a nervous breakdown if you’re not careful. It’s alright to work hard, of course, but you’ve got to have some things that make you feel good when you need to escape the grind. Do at least five things that will tangibly make your house feel a little bit more like a home. You can do them now, or after your damn breakdown. It’s your choice.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

What paths will you pursue this year? I’m not making some New Age-y metaphorical allusion, although you’re free to interpret it that way anyway, if you like. I was asking more literally: Where would you like to actually go? It’s important that you take yourself places, preferably physically. While it’s true that you can go on major trips without ever leaving your bedroom, it’s easier to get the effect you want (and need) by actually removing yourself from your familiar haunts. Getting stuck would be a bad idea. Now’s the time to make plans to ensure you don’t. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Psychic shields up! Virgos often have problems with boundaries and saying no. It’s because you so love to be helpful–even needed–that when someone asks you to do something for them, you almost invariably agree to it. This difficulty is aggravated the longer and more intimately you know someone–and especially if you’re romantically involved with them. What can you do? Create some more or less strictly defined parameters about what you actually need for yourself to be happy, and what you’re willing to do beyond that. This is a good week to define–arbitrarily, if necessary–and announce these. Don’t expect your spoiled friends and family to simply abide them, though. You may need to enforce them, too, so be prepared to do just that.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Keep your hand on your gun–metaphorically, not literally. An “enemy,” of sorts, is likely to get flushed into the open this week by actions you (perhaps inadvertently) set in motion. Don’t worry, this is not some kind of assassin–unless you happen to work for the NSA. Your “enemies” are, after all, more or less harmless. But being aware of their shitty intentions is, nevertheless, a good idea, because they could still screw you over, albeit on a much smaller scale than taking your life or burning down your house. It’s easy to prevent their sabotage–but first you have to catch them at it. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Tear up your bank statement. You worry too much about money; it always seems like there’s not enough of the stuff. Yet–funny thing about this–somehow you manage to survive nevertheless. I’m not telling you to stop balancing your budget and paying attention to these things. I’m just advising you to quit stressing out about it. Nothing you do this week can make the least bit of difference to your overall financial wellbeing, so why even waste a second fretting? You’ve got other, much more interesting stuff going on. Pay attention to that, not your wallet. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
