OBAMA GOES TO HIROSHIMA; MAUI GETS MILLIONS FOR DEFENSE

for the better. Yes, we’ve build the most dangerous engines of war in history, but that doesn’t mean we’re doomed to use them. The world was forever changed here. But today, the children of this city will go through their day in peace. What a precious thing that is. It is worth protecting, and then extending to every child. That is the future we can choose–a future in which Hiroshima and Nagasaki are known not as the dawn of atomic warfare, but as the start of our own moral awakening. The choice is ours, and our childrens’.

REP. TULSI GABBARD VISITS MAKAWAO VETERANS CEMETERY ON MEMORIAL DAY Let me close this week with an excerpt of remarks given by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–Hawaii, at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery on Memorial Day. They’re a wise counterpoint to the imperial power projection that has long made up American foreign policy:

On May 27, President Barack Obama made the first-ever presidential visit to Hiroshima, site of the first use of nuclear weapons in warfare. That Obama was the first president to ever visit the city–where a single American bomb killed about a hundred thousand people–betrays a great deal about how we still can’t cope with the fact that the U.S. is the only nation in history to ever use nuclear weapons in anger. Obama’s remarks were, as usual, eloquent and thoughtful: “Why do we come to this place, to Hiroshima?” he asked. “We come to ponder a terrible force unleashed in a not so distant past. We come to mourn the dead, including over 100,000 in Japanese men, women and children; thousands of Koreans; a dozen Americans held prisoner. Their souls speak to us. They ask us to look inward, to take stock of who we are and what we might become.” This is asking a lot–of both Obama himself and America as a whole. Obama can make well-reasoned, humane statements about the horrors of the Hiroshima bombing and war in general, but at the same time his administration continues to modernize our nuclear weapons stockpile. It’s been a few decades since the U.S. produced a completely new nuclear bomb, but modernization programs continue to this day. “The United States maintains a modern arsenal of about 1,900 strategic nuclear warheads deployed on Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs), and Strategic Bombers,” the nonprofit Arms Control Association said in a December 2015 post. “The U.S. military is in the process of modernizing all of its existing strategic delivery systems and refurbishing the warheads they carry to last for the next 30-50 years.” Obama is hardly the first president to face this quandary. We love to quote President Dwight Eisenhower on the costs of mod-

ern war and the dangers of the militaryindustrial complex, but seldom remember that during his eight years in office, he built thousands of nuclear bombs (the U.S. stockpile was a mere 299 in 1950, but had climbed to 18,638 by 1960). The closest Obama came to addressing his own ambivalence about nuclear weapons occurred about halfway through his remarks: “Still, every act of aggression between nations; every act of terror and corruption and cruelty and oppression that we see around the world shows our work is never done,” he said. “We may not be able to eliminate man’s capacity to do evil, so nations–and the alliances that we’ve formed–must possess the means to defend ourselves. But among those nations like my own that hold nuclear stockpiles, we must have the courage to escape the logic of fear, and pursue a world without them.” It’s easy to think of this as an abstract issue far removed from our shores, but it really isn’t. In fact, I couldn’t help but think about Obama’s visit today in the context of a news release sent out the day before by U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii. That release talks up the millions of dollars in defense funding the senator said he helped secure for Maui. “Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bipartisan defense appropriations bill for fiscal year 2017,”

states the May 26 news release. “U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, helped secure $222 million for the Army’s High Performance Computing Modernization Program, which supports the Department of Defense’s Regional Supercomputers, including the Maui High Performance Computing Center.” The U.S. military uses high performance computing for a variety of tasks and purposes. But it also has long played a role in the development and maintenance of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. “High Performance Computing (HPC) has been a principal nuclear design tool since the beginning of the nuclear weapons program,” states a 2009 Defense Science Board report. “Following the cessation of nuclear testing in 1992, HPC has taken on the primary integrating role in ensuring the safety and reliability of the nuclear stockpile.” This is America today. We say thoughtful things about the evils of warfare while

Rep. Gabbard at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery

“Like, him going home for lunch every day is ruining their relationship.”

“I was doing grocery shopping the other day, when I was approached by a Vietnam veteran and his wife,” said Gabbard, who is also a major in the Hawaii Army National Guard and Iraq War veteran. “As I thanked them for their service, and wished them well this weekend, the veteran told me he doesn’t go to Memorial Day ceremonies anymore because he’s sick and tired of hearing empty words from politicians, who say we must honor our fallen heroes, and in their next breath, call for more counterproductive regime change wars which are not in our nation’s best interest. “Sadly, he’s right,” she continued. “We owe it to our fallen comrades, our fellow veterans, and our nation to be wise about how we use our military power. It is not wise to use our military might to be the policeman of the world, attempting to overthrow secular dictators.” ■

building and modernizing the very weapons that make a future war between the world’s great powers indistinguishable from complete genocide. Still, at the end of his remarks today, Obama noted that the way we feel about our actions at Hiroshima can change the world

PUKALANI SUPERETTE DONATES TO ALOHA HOUSE Pukalani Superette recently donated $1,374.39 to Aloha House to help the organization continue their important work in the community. The funds were raised through generous donations from Superette customers over the past few months. “We have a loyal and generous customer base that make these donations possible,” said Pukalani Superette owner Myles Nakashima. “We are pleased to be able to help Aloha House and support our local community.” Aloha House, Inc. is a private, nonprofit corporation established in 1977 for the purpose of providing outpatient and residential treatment for individuals addicted to alcohol and/ or other drugs. Since that time, the mission has expanded to include provision of comprehensive, family-centered behavioral health interventions for the prevention and treatment of individual and family dysfunction. Each donation period, Pukalani Superette selects a different local charity or organization to support. The current canister collections will support Boys & Girls Club of Makawao. Donation canisters can be found at each checkout to drop in loose change or make a donation.

CHEF NABAVI LAUNCHES RSVP TO HELP MAUI NONPROFITS Chef Paris Nabavi has launched Maui RSVP (Restaurants Support Vital Programs), a dining promotion to raise money for eight Maui nonprofits that focus on youth in agriculture, arts, education, and wellness. For a 10-day period from May 27 to June 5, 2016 participating restaurants will each offer a 50 percent discount on selected entrees from 5-8pm. tral Station for annual distribution, 25 percent to endowment and 15 percent for ongoing, annual marketing, administration and grant management by Grants Central Station. Beneficiaries of the Nabavi Legacy Fund include Book Trust; Grow Some Good; Imua Family Services; Kids Cook/ Teens Cook with Heart; Maui Academy of Performing Arts; Maui Culinary Academy; Maui Food Innovation Center; and Maui School Garden Network. “I believe supporting these eight organizations is truly vital to the Maui community,” Nabavi said. “They share a common thread in that they each provide unique services and opportunities to our children, who are the future of our island. Whether it’s nutrition and cooking, education, arts or support services, these groups are dedicated to enhancing lives and empowering Maui’s youth for generations to come.” The early participants in the program include Cane & Canoe at Montage Kapalua; Joey’s Kitchen at Whalers Village; Oceanside at Ma‘alaea Harbor Shops; Pulehu An Italian Grill; Sangrita Grill & Cantina; Taverna in Kapalua Resort; The Mill House at Maui Tropical Plantation; and Three’s Bar & Grill. Nabavi is encouraging more Maui restaurants and food industry partners to participate in RSVP. For Nabavi, this legacy is a dream project. Nabavi has always loved the fresh ingredients and spices of his native Persian as well as Mexican food which inspired him to share healthy dining options on Maui. He opened Pizza Paradiso Mediterranean Grill in Honokowai in 1998 and Cilantro Mexican Grill opened in 2004. His newest venture is Sangrita Grill + Cantina in Ka‘anapali, which opened in 2014 with an upscale cantina atmosphere and an inventive menu. In his restaurants, and in his life, Nabavi always promotes the use of locally sourced, organic ingredients. Having dealt with his own health challenges, Nabavi understands the vital importance of nurturing our bodies with “real” food, rather than processed alternatives. Maui RSVP will run again in September, from Sept. 23-Oct. 2, 2016. To participate

Duke’s Beach House in Ka‘anapali recently honored Trisha Calhoun, Graham Seiki and Keola Rogat of Princess Nahi‘ena‘ena Elementary School as Educators of the Month (March, April and May respectively). Calhoun, a volunteer from the farming industry, is the school’s resident gardener and was praised for sharing her enthusiasm for agriculture with the students. She also teaches K-2 graders about the benefits of healthy eating. April Educator Award winner Seiki is the Technology Coordinator at Princess Nahi‘ena‘ena Elementary School. Seiki was nominated by his peers for going above and beyond for all of the students, including Hawaiian Immersion. Vice Principal Rogat was celebrated for his dedication to the staff and students. “We are so proud to be able to acknowledge the great work that the staff at Princess are providing for the children in West Maui,” said Josh Fukagawa, the manager of Duke’s Beach House on Maui. “Through the Duke’s Beach House Legacy of Aloha program, we are able to support organizations and people accomplishing great things for the community.” The award-winning educators were presented with an engraved Koa box and a $100 gift certificate to Duke’s Beach House to honor their dedication.

forget about getting into the Wo Hing Museum. Until further notice, the museum is closed for repairs, the Lahaina Restoration Foundation (LRF), which operates the building, said in a May 25 news release. LRF spokesperson Karee Carlucci wasn’t sure when the building would reopen, but said “it won’t be before the end of June” (it’s housed in a building that dates to 1912). But the LRF’s description of the damage that needs to be repaired doesn’t make us think it’ll be quick work: “When ground termites were found in one of the posts supporting the upper lanai last year, that post and the surrounding area were treated but the termites’ point of entry was not specifically located,” states the LRF news release. “Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s chief engineer realized that the termites could return. The Foundation submitted a proposal and subsequently received a grant to fund the restoration project. County of Maui then issued Historic District and Special Management Area Exemption permits for the work. “Bracing, demolition and repair work began this month, and the contractor found that the termite damage was more extensive than originally thought. A.H. Builders will be replacing all eight supporting posts on the front of the building, four on the upper lanai and four on the lower level. In addition to replacing the damaged wood posts and reinforcing the structure, the contractor is working to establish the point of entry of termites into the building so this type of infestation can be prevented in the future.” Anyone wanting more information on the Wo Hing Museum or the LRF in general should call 808-661-3262 or visit LahainaRestoration.org.

News Of The Weird NETFLIX AND GRILL? Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign announced they had recently (a first, they claimed) transmitted high-speed digital data through slabs of pork loin and beef liver. The signal cleared the muscle and gristle so cleanly that it permitted streaming of high-definition video–enough to watch Netflix, said the lead researcher. (Actually, the advance is crucial in that it allows a patient to swallow a transmitter and for physicians to monitor inner workings of the body in real time and externally control implanted devices such as cranial sensors and defibrillators.)

Religious leaders associated with the “quiverfull” ministry announced intentions for a November retreat this year in Wichita, Kansas, at which parents will meet to plan “arranged” Christian marriages for their prepubescent daughters, to maximize the future couples’ childbearing potential–supposedly the No. 1 priority of all females. Quiverfull activist Vaughn Ohlman has written that female fertility is optimal during their teens (actually, just after age 12) and drops off in their 20s. The local district attorney, queried by The Wichita Eagle, said such marriages are legal as long as all parties consent–but Ohlman has maintained that the Bible does not require the bride’s consent if her father has given his.

The Daily Pakistan newspaper, covering the Anti-Terrorism Court in Karachi in April, reported that a judge in Courtroom III asked a constable if he knew how the grenade entered into evidence worked. Rather than assume that an explanation was requested, the constable pulled the pin to demonstrate, and the resulting explosion injured the constable, a court clerk and another police officer. The constable is said to be facing severe discipline as soon as he recovers.

RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Great Britain’s prisoners claiming to be adherents of the ancient Celtic pagan religion are allowed, under rules from the

National Offender Management Services, to be excused from jailhouse routines to celebrate four festivals, including (of course) the Festival of the Lactating Sheep. Although “Skyclad,” or naked worship, is forbidden, prisoners can wear the silver pagan ring (to avoid “distress”) and are permitted their own chalices, crystals, “worry beads,” pentagram necklaces, hoodless robes and flexible twig-wands.

GOD WAS A NO-SHOW An Israeli man (unidentified in press reports) petitioned the Haifa Magistrate’s Court recently for a restraining order against God, pointing out that the Almighty has exhibited (according to a May Times of Israel report) “a seriously negative attitude toward him,” especially over the previous three years. The judge rejected the petition even though God was not present to argue against it (or at least His presence could not be detected).

PARENTAL VALUES In the latest ruling on a familiar theme, a court in Modena, Italy, ordered a father to continue paying living expenses for his son, age 28, who had meandered through a degree in literature but now has decided to seek another, in experimental cinema. (Almost two-thirds of Italians aged 18 to 34 still live with their parents.) And in Beijing, an elderly couple secured a court order in March forcing their 36-year-old daughter finally to move out after she had refused for years. The couple admitted to the Beijing Morning Post that they might have pampered her excessively over the years, even lending her the equivalent of $23,000 to buy a house. (Still, she stayed.)

NEW WORLD ORDER Gynecologists interviewed by The New York Times for an April report said they were baffled by the recent increase in teenage girls demanding cosmetic surgery on the external folds of their vulvas–since there is rarely a medical need and the safety of the operation on young girls has not been demonstrated. Some doctors called the “need” just an extreme example of teen girls’ beauty obsessions and suggested the presence in some girls of the psychiatric malady of “body dysmorphic disorder,” in which a person imagines or exaggerates a physical characteristic. (The phenomenon is different from the “vaginal rejuvenation” requested by older women, especially after childbirth, because that involves tightening internal tissue.)

CAVALCADE OF REDNECKS Timothy Trammell, 36, was arrested on several charges in Jonesville, South Carolina, in May after a sheriff’s deputy spotted him spray-painting a car that was not his. According to the deputy’s report, Trammell had just finished angrily painting “C-h-e-e-t-e-r” [sic] on the car (belonging to a woman, identified in a WSPA-TV report as his girlfriend). ■

planting during Hemp Week.” In the meantime, Maui Hemp Institute has already named board member James Simpliciano, owner of Simpli-fresh Fresh Farms, as the first farmer to plant those seeds. “One of our board members, James Simpliciano, his grandfather grew hemp on Oahu during the war, and so did his father,” says Rose. “As soon as James plants some hemp he will be the first third generation farmer to grow hemp. We will be doing an event on his farm on the final day of hemp history week. We are going to set up the hemp plot. I don’t think we will be able to seed the plot, unless the governor signs the bill. But we can plant a few ‘ceremonial’ seeds.” At the brewery, Marrero says Senator Roz Baker, D–Kihei, brought up a possible issue with hemp crops and burning in the production process. McBride says that Manitoba Harvest does not burn the crops at all; in fact, the food hemp that they grow gets tilled back into the ground. “Manitoba Harvest grows a food hemp that grows about six feet tall, they harvest the top three feet,” says McBride. “Bottom three feet is stalk. The stalk is really tough, in a dry year it actually can bend the combines. It has the tensile strength of steel. If it’s been a wetter season we can cut that three feet up and use the leftover stalk for things like pet bedding. There is a guy in Saskatchewan that uses that. If you want textile hemp, you have to start with a seed of a textile hemp seed. That is the 18-foot hemp you see in the old videos. That kind of hemp has a maturation cycle of about 60 days, kind of like bamboo. It’s in and it’s out because that short growing season protects the shaft and keeps is soft. The longer it’s in the ground, the harder that shaft becomes. Industrial hemp for food is about a hundred days for maturation. Still 80 days faster than corn, 90 days faster than soy. It’s a high-yield, low-impact agricultural product, good for breaking up the soil with its deep tap root. You can see a root twice as deep below as what you see above. Most times with our food hemp that bottom three feet gets tilled back into the soil. There is no burning.” Yes, there are a many misconceptions about hemp. It’s a cannabis plant, but it’s not marijuana. During Hemp History Week, the Maui Hemp Institute plans to do a lot of education outreach on the plant and talk about their vision for commercial hemp.

y research into Maui’s hemp initiative and the upcoming Maui hemp history week starts with a trip to the Maui Brewing Company (MBC) brewery in Kihei. A small group of media has gathered to photograph Steve Rose of the Maui Hemp Institute, Sean McBride from Manitoba Harvest and Garrett Marrero of MBC as Maui’s first hemp seed beer is going in the giant steel vat. This is the third annual hemp week celebration on Maui, but this time there’s a lot to celebrate and the event has grown. A change in public opinion on hemp and recent hemp legislation is opening doors for this age-old crop. With sugar leaving Maui’s agriculture business, there’s a lot of speculation about what will be next, and there are some people who would like to see hemp as another viable crop. “The dream is to create a real innovation and research facility on Maui,” says Rose, the Maui Hemp Institute president. “My dream is to build something the size of this brewery. We want to be able to have educational facilities, complete audio and visual center. We want to be able to create movies and materials here because there is nothing out there about hemp. Hemp has been banned for 70 years so there is no material out there. It was literally banned before the typewriter became popular. So there’s nothing even written or anything that you can go look at. We want to be that documentation facility.” Section 7606 of the 2014 Federal Government’s Farm Bill signed into law by Obama legalized cultivation industrial hemp for universities and state departments of ag as long as the States certify and register the grow sites. Several states have started growing hemp. Legislation recently passed in Hawaii’s Senate that sets the foundation to legalize hemp grown for research, but the bill awaits Governor David Ige’s signature. “So the law just got passed to have Hawaii comply with the federal farm act which is the requirement,” says Rose. “But until the governor signs it into law, nothing can happen. Once it gets signed, it will go to the Ag Department so they can set the rules to issue the permits. Once that is set up, the farmers can apply and get the research permits. So we’re looking at a few months of bureaucracy. I’m hoping that they could allow us to do a ceremonial

“I have three models to hemp agriculture,” says Rose. “I want to create the publishing arm so we can create books and educate people. The research facility also needs to research the 20 or more microclimates on Maui. This is a place where we can research what seeds grow best in what climate. We have 35 states on the Mainland growing hemp but they have no seed. Manitoba grows seed but they use it as food. China has seed and so does Czechoslovakia but there is no seed in the US. In 2014, Colorado grew 30 acres of hemp. Last year there was 500 acres. Right now, there are 20,000 acres growing. All the seed gets put back in the ground. It’s not for sale to other farmers. We have 35 states now including Alabama that are looking for seeds. One of the first commercial businesses that the institute wants to have the infrastructure to support is basically, for lack of a better term, the Sargenta/Monsanto models for seed growing. We could do three to four seed crops here of hemp on Maui. Colorado has only one growing season. We have already been in touch with some of the states that want to come here to do their research in the winter. We see the growth of the research industry as one of the things that we are going to build here, besides the commercial industry. “The research facility I envision, is that we get the research and then we innovate on it,” Rose continues. “Even though there is national involvement we are Mauicentric. And everything we do with hemp we want it to benefit Maui locally. Our food forest project is about creating sustainable food on Maui. What has been missing is the hemp component to that. Hemp is one of the main components. You need something to block the wind. It’s a key component to remediate soil. Hemp is a key part to the islands sustainable food system.” Hemp History Week launches with a party Saturday, June 4 at the Maui Brewing Company Kihei brew pub. It includes the first public sampling of the beer created just for this event. “We are calling the beer Maui Hemp ESB,” says Marrero. “We want it to be about the hemp. ESB is an actual beer style–Extra Special Bitter. But a funny thing happens when you call it an extra special bitter. People think, ‘ugh, bitter!’ But bitter is actually a good thing in beer. This is the kind of beer you would see in London. Don’t be afraid of bitterness in beer–this is just a different style than you are used to. ESB is a very drinkable

beer, with biscuit caramel character to it. An easy drinking beer. We chose that because the hemp seed will bring a lot of nutty characteristics out in its flavor. If you have ever had a nut brown ale, it would be similar to that. It’s a little more mild. Maui Brewing Company wants to work with the hempsters Continued on page 13

Hemp innovation will be looked at from all sides during the week at education presentations by the Maui Hemp Institute. The final event at Hemp History Week happens at the Simpli-Fresh farms, where participants can get dirty with Simpliciano and Fine while they learn about the Hempinfused Food Forest project that will launch that day. The Sunday event will be a hands-on day at the farm and a hemp-inspired lunch. “The event will be about learning and understanding about the process of farmers farming soil,” says Simpliciano. “Putting cover crop seeds such as hemp, sun hemp and other nitrogen fixing plants and trees. Hemp will revolutionize how we are putting carbon back called carbon sequestration to reverse climate change, and remediation of soil biology and organic life.” Simpliciano says the lack of hemp seeds is not an issue for him. He’s looking forward to Fine’s appearance on the farm. “With the help of our National growers and our guest farmer Doug Fine, I’m not too concerned about the seeds,” says Simpliciano. “Fine is currently consulting many farmers in Kentucky, Carolina, Colorado and soon here on Maui. The process of hemp seeds will not be available until next year when USDA are issued permits to our Maui Hemp Institution for research and development of a local seed production and inventory.” McBride says the hemp industry in Canada creates no waste when it’s done right, and that’s what they’re hoping to help support and create here on Maui. “The nickname for industrial hemp in Canada is the Green Buffalo,” says McBride. “It’s a zero-waste crop when done properly. Not Another Superhero Movie! There’s a lot to like–and dislike–in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ ★★★★★ Rated PG-13 / 144 Min.

he opening of Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse is grand and exciting, evoking Cecil B. DeMille with a sublime hunk of Stargate cheese. We witness an Egyptian leader with extraordinary powers named Apocalypse (an imposing Oscar Isaac). Dozens of his followers declare him a false god and stage a coup. Centuries later, Apocalypse and his minions are unearthed and plot to “cleanse” the Earth. Only the X-Men are powerful enough to face an enemy this powerful. From the very beginning, the high style, dramatic focus and playful intertwining of visual effects and artful staging announce a true filmmaker is at the helm. If only the screenplay were as strong. There are too many characters, some of whom stand around, appear waiting for something to do. It helps that Michael Fassbender is once again the lead. McAvoy makes a decent Professor X but its Fassbender’s intensity and

his investment in Magneto’s anguish that anchors the film. Jennifer Lawrence was great in the previous movie but doesn’t have enough to do here. Her considerable presence and star power are the strongest qualities she brings. A standout sequence in X-Men: Days of Future Past is one-upped here, as the fasterthan-fast Quicksilver (scene-stealer Evan Peters) once again uses his powers both for heroics and his own amusement. Whereas the previous film had a sensational bit utilizing Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle,” this installment finds Quicksilver’s intervention on a massive explosion, set to Eurythmic’s “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” Another moment that truly made my jaw drop is a visit to Auschwitz. It’s bizarre to see costumed superheroes walking around the former Nazi death camp. Magneto leveling the camp into CGI rubble is stunning but definitely in poor taste. This movie has as much to do with the Holocaust as My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and overreaches by bringing such a serious topic into an especially frivolous summer movie. To give Singer credit, his X-Men

Wait, did I leave the iron on this morning?

films have always been about facing prejudice, embracing one’s identity as an outsider and pushing back against bigotry.Yet, his attempts in this and other X-Men movies to incorporate the murder of millions of Jews with the origin of Magneto are forced, never fully realized and, to say the least, mighty tacky. There’s a pointed bit of mockery that backfires: we see some characters exit a movie theater, apparently discussing the Star Wars trilogy. Someone notes that “we can agree that the third one is always the worst.” It’s a funny jab at Brett Ratner, the director of the much-despised third entry, X-Men: The Last Stand. But by the time the movie gets to its overly busy and thoroughly ridiculous finale, the X-Men movie this resembles the most is Ratner’s. The film lost me by the third act, which is stuffed with CGI overload, explosions on top of more explosions and silly fight scenes. Much has been made of Olivia Munn, in a

Frederick’s of Hollywood-ready costume, playing Psylocke, one Apocalypse’s warriors. Munn has barely a line of dialogue and puts in more of an appearance than a real performance. While there are rewards throughout for fans (newcomers will be utterly lost), the climactic battle with Apocalypse is unsatisfying. The stakes are certainly high, particularly for planet Earth but really, the finale of the prior two X-Men films had more suspense and crucial character turns. Apocalypse is better than The Last Stand, First Class and even the redundant, over-praised X2: X-Men United but doesn’t approach the greatness of the most recent and original entries. Singer’s initial 2000 X-Men, with its comparatively “tiny” $90 million budget, isn’t overstuffed, takes chances that work and is still charming and exciting. Apocalypse has thrilling portions and some strong acting but Singer’s franchise peaked with Days of Future Past. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Geminis are generally quite well-adjusted people. Your dual nature is rife with internal checks and balances: You’re sick, but at least you’re funny; self-absorbed, but affectionate; overly-talkative, but entertaining; spoiled but generous; picky but adventurous, and so on… However, this array of internal contrasts can be incredibly confusing to some simpler folk who only believe in or are one thing at a time. Because you actually need a few of these dolts on your side (or at least doing your bidding), help them. Dumb down your self-presentation so they can actually wrap their tiny minds around it. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Sand fleas. Your week is infested with them. You’ve developed your emotional buffer zone; emotional tides no longer seriously erode your shoreline of self-belief. But all that work won’t help you now; there are no floods expected, only a plague of pests, metaphorical sand fleas biting your ankles and tender places and making you itchy and bitchy. There’s not much to be done; this isn’t a beach you can simply walk away from. These tenacious critters are likely to come with you in any case. There’s only one thing you can do: Marshal your patience, sit down, and pick them off, one by one. Whether you crush or drown them is up to you.

ability to make a permanent sexual imprint on someone can yield a win-win this week, please do so. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Watch your weight, baby. You’ve got to stay fit and lean for this summer’s adventures. Unfortunately, this week’s astrological influences aren’t going to help you in this department. If you don’t develop some serious resistance you’re going to have to buy a bigger, looser clothing soon. I know I’m not painting a pretty picture here, but I’ve got to keep it real. It’s an easy choice, really. Watch: butter and chocolate now, or sex and excitement all summer. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Caps are the fiercest partiers in the zodiac. Yeah, Scorpios appear to be more dangerous, and Aries are certainly louder. But no one knows how to turn it up better than you; it’s that whole work hard, play hard thing. With next week’s astrological influences dosing your sign with three different flavors of intoxication, you’re in for some wild times, and you’ll probably end up playing harder than you have yet this year. You know what that means at the moment, though, right? If you want to rock out with your metaphorical cock out next week, you need to press it to the grindstone this one.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Felling a tree requires tremendous stamina and effort, especially one as old and thick as the one before you. However, you require more than determination. Without the proper tools you’re screwed. Right now you’re equipped with a puny steak knife, bound to snap before you’ve properly penetrated the bark. Luckily there are better tools that can help you get the job done. Be careful who you choose, though. Avoid the top-notch superstar. They may be the metaphorical equivalent of a chainsaw, but they work solo and break down or runs out of fuel easily. A better choice might be the pair of good old-fashioned ax-wielding lumberjacks who don’t need to shine and are just happy to get the job done. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

You may not realize this, but the first impression most people get of you is of a very high-maintenance person. It’s partially accurate; after all, you are one. What isn’t immediately apparent, however, is that your maintenance routines are almost completely self-contained. In other words, what you and I know and they don’t is that you’re very good at taking care of nearly all your own needs, as well as accepting some of the burdens those around you carry. The new people who are just getting to know you need to know this about you, too, and fast, or they’ll ditch you for someone who seems easier to handle (but actually isn’t). LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

You’re not a storm-the-gate type. Flat-out attacking a fortress, like the one before you, just isn’t your style, what with all the flying arrows, boiling oil, and moat full of raw sewage and attack mermaids. You’re much more likely to lay in a quiet siege. Starve them out. You’re patient. Eventually, whoever you’re trying to get to has got to open up, right? Nope. Not this time. There’s too much pride lurking inside those metaphorical castle walls. They’re not going to let you in until you’ve shown them that you really want it bad. In other words, unless you make a convincing show of trying to scale the battlements or batter down the door, they’ll starve before they let you in. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Every one of your exes still masturbates to your memory. It doesn’t matter if you ended on horrible terms, screaming filthy curses at each other, or if you never saw each other again after that final bout of break-up sex. I can virtually guarantee they still think about you. This is one of your superpowers. Don’t abuse it. However, because wielding your magical

Aren’t you forgetting something? It feels like it might be something obvious, right? Like leaving your house without pants on. Get used to the nagging feeling that you’re missing something big. It’s astrologically-induced. What you’ve actually forgotten (or perhaps procrastinated about so long you delusionally thought it went away) isn’t your sunglasses, wallet, or house key. It’s a little something you were supposed to say or do ages ago. The reason the stars are plaguing you now is that it’s almost too late. Either you do it right now, whether you’re “ready” or not, or you kick yourself at least until 2020. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

A stand of saplings has sprouted up in your spiritual backyard. They’re pretty, but they’re blocking sunlight from hitting your house, and, more importantly, the garden you need to survive. They’ve got to go, no matter what. Whether any trees need to die, though, is up to you; they’re still small enough to dig up and transplant, if you’re willing to put in the time and effort. Which will you inflict on these saplings: tremendous suffering (and possible survival), or a quick death? It’s a tough choice, but do all concerned a favor by making it consciously, and not by default.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You, you, you you. You you, you you you, you you. You you. You and more you. Pretty boring, right? Don’t do it to people around you, please. We already know it’s all about you. Driving the point home is just plain obnoxious, and not even in an endearing way. Given this week’s astrological influences, it might be difficult to imagine that everyone you know isn’t fascinated by whatever strokes of fantastic or horrible fortune have lately befallen you. They’re not interested, though, at least not as consistently or passionately as you think. We love you, dearly, but this kind of babble is best reserved for your therapist or diary. Give us what we want, darling: the lowdown, not the breakdown. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

I love the way a ripe, juicy peach tastes after a day in the ocean, the sharp sweet tang as it washes the salt from my mouth. I only mention it because you’re fruit this week, too. Not in any tacky slangy way, but in exactly this one: you have the power to provide a refreshing and satisfying contrast to the bitter ocean most of the people you know are stuck swimming in all day, with just a joke or a smile. You can’t imagine how much they need (and will appreciate) what you have to offer. Please don’t deny them. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
