ban on Muslims entering the US.)” Though Gabbard has often eloquently opposed America’s highly militarized foreign policy–something many Democrats have refused to do for far too long–criticising Gabbard for being less than progressive is hardly new. Back in November 2015, we took Gabbard to task for her absurd vote for House Resolution 1737, which would go a long way to enabling racial discrimination in the granting of auto loans. In any case, it should be a fascinating race to watch.

SHAY CHAN HODGES FILES TO RUN AGAINST TULSI GABBARD
Overheard
I’ve written a few novels now about Maui. Always noirish in tone and style, they focus on unsavory characters and femme fatales around the island. I like to think I can imagine some pretty off-thewall stuff, but nothing I’ve written comes close to the non-fiction tale of the Dadow sisters that’s playing out right now. Flashback to Sunday, May 29. For reasons still murky, a white 2016 Ford Explorer drives off the Hana Highway in East Maui and plunges to the rocks 200 feet below. On board are two women. Witnesses speak of them arguing with each other shortly before the plunge. One dies shortly after the impact, the other is flown to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. On Wednesday, June 1, The Maui News identifies the deceased woman as 37-year-old In the movie, the Olsen twins should play these two Anastasia Duval of Haiku. She was the pasfunded memberships,” according to the senger in the Explorer, while her twin sisStar-Advertiser. ter, the driver, remains in the hospital. From there, the twins allegedly moved In fact, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser on to Utah, where they started over with reported on Monday, June 6, the dea new yoga studio (this one included ceased woman was actually named Ann dog yoga, or “doga”) and started selling Dadow. What’s more, she and her sister “spirit water.” They also filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Their alleged debt, according to the Star-Advertiser, ran into the “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” Apparently, the sisters arrived on Maui in December, moved to Haiku and started living under assumed names. As for what exactly happened in the Ford Explorer, that's not really known, though on June 7 The Maui News reported that Maui Police arrested Alison Dadow at the Maui Seaside Hotel in Kahului after she allegedly tried to leave the island. ■

Author and local Democratic Party activist Shay Chan Hodges has decided to run against U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard this year, Chan Hodges told us on June 6, one day before the state’s deadline for candidate filing. Though Gabbard–who is also a Major in the Hawaii Army National Guard and an Iraq War veteran–is one of the more high-profile Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, Chan Hodges believes that she simply isn’t progressive enough to represent Maui. “It could also be argued that my county — Maui — is not only the most progressive in the state, but also the nation,” Chan Hodges (who wrote the book Lean On and Lead: Mothering and Work in the 21st Century Economy) said in her May 31 essay on Medium.com. “In 2008, when Dennis Kucinich ran for President, his best showing in any Democratic contest was in the Hawaii caucus, and the only county in the country that he won was Maui County. So I was not surprised when Bernie Sanders won our state presidential preference poll this March with a 70% majority, taking 62% of the votes in the first District, and 75% in the second.” That Gabbard is one of Sanders’ highest profile supporters is laudable to Chan Hodges, who said as much in her Medium essay. But Chan Hodges also pointed out that such support on its own “does not mean that Congresswoman Gabbard represents us.” She then outlined three factors that “raise quite a few questions about how committed she is to fighting for our district’s values.” First, that Gabbard has helped out billionaire Sheldon Adelson, the chairman and CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation who opposes organized labor and is a major campaign donor to conservative Political Action Committees and Republican candidates. Chan Hodges noted in her essay that Gabbard has introduced Adelson-backed legislation
that would kill online gambling–a major threat to Adelson’s interests. Second, Chan Hodges noted that Gabbard has repeatedly criticized and mocked the Obama Administration for not saying we’re at war with “Islamic extremism”–something even Sanders opposes. “While I believe that no elected official should be above critique –lest we devolve into a cult of personality over substance – our district elected President Obama with a 70% majority, and a respectful discussion in an appropriate forum reflects both our district and Hawaiian values,” Chan Hodges noted. Finally, Chan Hodges criticized Gabbard for supporting legislation that would make it more difficult for refugees fleeing the bloody Syrian civil war to get to the U.S. “[O]n November 19, 2015, Gabbard voted with 46 Democrats and 242 Republicans to pass HR 4038 — the American SAFE Act of 2015, to institute a stronger screening process for refugees from Iraq and Syria who apply for admission to the U.S.,” Chan Hodges wrote. “Previously, in 2014, Gabbard called for visa waivers to be curtailed from European countries with “Islamic extremist” populations – specifically Britain, Germany, and France. (A year later, Donald Trump called for a
Alison have been leading infamous lives across the Mainland for the last few years, first in South Florida–where they ran a couple Twin Power Yoga studios– and later in Utah. In fact, according to the Star-Advertiser, the gossip site GossipExtra has been writing about the sisters (and their alleged crimes) for years, and even hired a private investigator to tail them (the site even called the sisters “the Terrible Twins of Yoga”). “With their striking blonde looks and high-power clientele, the twins were a conspicuous presence in the Palm Beach community, traveling in matching Porsches and frequenting the tony Worth Avenue shopping district,” the Star-Advertiser reported. But then in 2014, the Dadow sisters “abruptly closed their studios without notice, leaving numerous employees unpaid and hundreds of clients–including many new ones attracted by a recent Groupon special–with worthless, unre-

MALAMA MAUI NUI ENDS BATTERY/PAINT PROGRAMS Malama Maui Nui plans to end its Household Batteries Recycling program and the Paint Exchange as of June 30. The nonprofit environmental organization that promotes community engagement in sustainable waste management and conservation programs said it’s closing the
programs due to a lack of funds. Malama Maui Nui will continue to collect batteries and host the pickup and drop-off of usable water-based, acrylic, or latex paint through the end of business day June 30. “We remain extremely proud of what these programs have accomplished,” said Gabrielle Schuerger, interim Executive Director of Malama Maui Nui. “They have allowed us to collaborate with neighboring businesses, community members, and our local government to carry out end-of-life best management practices for common household waste for many years.” Malama Maui Nui’s programs have recycled more than 20 tons of batteries and redistributed more than 13,000 gallons of usable paint, diverting that much waste from ending up in Maui County landfills. Instead, those materials were given a second life: for the batteries, in the form of recycled plastic, rebar, fertilizers, and other useful products; and for the paint, as the key ingredient in countless Do-It-Yourself projects such as creating set backdrops for school plays, waterproofing outdoor sheds, renovating children’s bedrooms, even making dream boards for self-expression and inspiration. “When it comes to sustainable waste management, these kinds of programs are successful when the community demonstrates their value through their actions: by volunteering their time to assist with program facilitation, donating to the programs, and encouraging everyone involved to participate, including their local representatives,” said Schuerger. Community members are encouraged to contact Malama Maui Nui as well as their political representatives on the local and state level to share any comments or concerns regarding the closure of the Household Batteries Recycling program and the Paint Exchange. Questions can be directed to info@ cwdhawaii.org or 808-877-2524. For more information, go to MalamaMauiNui.org. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Maui High School’s Alexandria Tyau is among 16 high school juniors statewide who will be honored this summer as their school’s “Islander Scholar,” a program codeveloped by the Islander Institute and Malama Learning Center. The Islander Scholar honor is part of an inaugural program recognizing students for their character and commitment to upholding values of Hawaii. The program grew out of a desire to honor students based on their values and actions that demonstrate a deep understanding of Hawaii– and not based solely on typical measures like grades and athletics. Alapaki Nahale-a, co-founder of Islander Scholars–conceived of the idea while serving on the U.S. Presidential Scholars Commission for Hawaii, a national program that honors two students per state based on their academic achievements. “We need to redefine what success means for our students in Hawaii,” said Nahale-a, who is also the former director of Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School. “Islander Scholars is a one-of-a-kind program that says our island values matter too. This award lifts up students who demonstrate care for their schools, families and communities.” “Education in Hawaii has to be about more than just marching kids toward jobs,” said Andrew Aoki, founder of the Islander Institute. “We believe these Islander Scholars have the skills and character to lead the way in building our communities, caring for our islands, carrying on important traditions, and passing down wisdom.” Principals at traditional and charter public high schools were invited to select one junior as their school’s Islander Scholar based on six comprehensive learning outcomes rooted in Hawaii’s culture and environment; these outcomes (called Na Hopena A‘o, which was adopted by the state Board of Education in 2015) include a sense of belonging,
responsibility, excellence, aloha, total well-being and Hawaii, which spell out BREATH or HA in Hawaiian. “The Na Hopena Ao Outcomes (or HA) holds a space for what is meaningful to us as an educational system not just in Hawaii but of Hawaii,” said Cheryl Ka‘uhane Lupenui, a former Board of Education member and an Islander Scholar Program Guide. “Na Hopena Ao resonates with so many people because it moves us at a deeper, below the piko, level of intelligence. Students, teachers, the superintendent, community members are all finding ways to breathe more life into our learning environments through HA.” As part of this honor, all 16 Islander Scholars will come together for the inaugural Islander Scholars Academy at Camp Palehua (formerly Camp Timberline) from June 3 to 5 in Kapolei; this will be a special experience for scholars to connect and learn from each other, develop cultural and leadership skills, and build relationships with other island mentors. “The Islander Scholars Academy will be an opportunity for our 16 Islander Scholars to discover what it means to be an islander and the joys and responsibilities that come with this honor,” said Pauline Sato, Program and Executive Director of Malama Learning Center. All Islander Scholars are expected to return to their schools and communities in their senior year to uphold the values of the program and to serve as role models for their peers.

Pixee Fox reported in May that she was recovering nicely from cosmetic ribremoval surgery, performed by one of the few doctors in the world who offers it (Dr. Barry Eppley of Carmel, Indiana). Though she has had more than a dozen “beautifying” procedures, she had trouble finding a surgeon who would agree to take out six “free-floating” ribs (ones not attached to the sternum). Born in Sweden, she gave up a career as a trained electrician to come to the United States to pursue her goal of looking “like a cartoon character”–which she has surely achieved with her now-16-inch waist.
Shannon Egeland, 41, already convicted in 2014 of running a mortgage-fraud operation during the 2004-2008 real-estate boom, pleaded guilty in May 2016 to the subsequent crime of deliberately having himself shot to gain his judge’s sympathy (and to collect on disability insurance he had purchased the week before). Egeland, scheduled to start a 10-year sentence for the 2014 conviction, told the judge he had been assaulted by gunfire when he stopped in traffic to help a pregnant woman, but in reality he had ordered his teenage son to shoot him in the legs with a 20-gauge shotgun.
LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Triple Crown winner American Pharoah earned an estimated $8.6 million racing but, now retired, could earn as much as $35 million just by having sex. Stallions reportedly can breed into their 20s, and the horse, now barely age 4, will have 175 conquests by the end of this summer, according to a May report by CNBC. One industry worker said Pharoah has put on weight, spends his spare time peaceably eating grass, and “looks more like a relaxed horse.” A spokesman for the Kentucky farm now housing Pharoah said he “has proven to be very professional in the breeding shed.”
LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES The Keystone Fellowship Church in North Wales, Pennsylvania, has a tradition of congregants reserving pew seats by leaving Bibles in place, but worshipper Robert Braxton, 27, was having none of that on April 24 and took a saved seat anyway. Witnesses told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV that when one church member gently tapped Braxton on the shoulder to inform him of the tradition, Braxton snapped at him and became disruptive. Congregant Mark Storms, 46, flashed a gun and confronted Braxton, who punched Storms, adding, “That’s not a real gun” and “What are you going to do, shoot me?” Storms, contending that he felt threatened, fired two shots, killing Braxton, and was charged with voluntary manslaughter.
BRIGHT IDEAS The Moscow Times reported in May that bailiffs in Russia’s Perm region, employing originality as yet unseen in America in attempting to collect an overdue debt, arrested the debtor’s cat. The bailiffs listed the feline’s value at the equivalent of $23, and the man came up with that sum the next day and took the cat home. The Federal Bailiffs Service explained that all the other “property” in the apartment was in other people’s names.

NEW WORLD ORDER German soldiers participating in a fourweek NATO exercise in Norway earlier this year apparently had to abort their efforts days earlier than other countries–because Germany’s defense minister, Ursula von der Leyen, had imposed strict rules on overtime pay. Soldiers are to work no more than 41 hours a week, she said, according to revelations by London’s Daily Telegraph. And Britain’s venerable Oxford University issued a formal suggestion to law lecturers recently that they give “trigger warnings” (and allow classroom absences) if the class subject matter might be unpleasant to some students. Complained one frustrated lecturer, “We can’t remove sexual offences from the criminal law syllabus–obviously.”
AMATEURS Government agencies trying, legally or not, to hide details from public inquiries under freedom-of-information demands usually resort to indelibly blackening out what they do not want revealed, but the Public Health Agency of Canada recently tried a unique method, according to an Associated Press correspondent. The AP had requested files on the 2014 Ebola outbreak, and, revealed reporter Raphael Satter, the documents finally arrived from the PHA with parts carefully “redacted”–using “Scotch tape and paper.” Satter reported that he got everything the AP had asked for by merely peeling the tape back. (A Dallas Morning News reporter, commenting on Satter’s experience, wrote, “Canadians are so nice.”)
ARMED AND DANGEROUS IN THE F STATE Michael Blevins, 37, reported to Florida Hospital in Orange City (near Daytona Beach) in May after finally realizing, three days after the fact, that he had shot himself while cleaning his handgun. He said he was on pain medication and besides, was wearing a black shirt that obscured blood stains. He said he had felt a sharp pain but that, mainly, it had aggravated his back injury, causing him to fall and hit his head against a coffee table, and thus was not aware of the origin of the loud noise the .22-caliber handgun made. Deputies investigated briefly but closed the case. ■

Your guide to all things Maui Film Festival 2016 By Anthony Pignataro

T
he best movies are journeys–trips to places and times we may never visit in our own lives. Movies take us on two-hour jaunts into deep space, show us battles from a century ago and put us in the middle of worlds that only exist on an animator’s drawing board. Movies offer both escape from our terrestrial, contemporary lives as well as moments of emotional and intellectual stimulation (well, unless the movie credits include the words “Adam Sandler,” in which case, all bets are off). “What I love most about movies is that they begin before they start and they don’t end when they’re over,” the blogger Nitrate Diva has written. “I believe that movies should be dangerous, fun, and incendiary, at once familiar and mysterious–even when being analyzed.” Every year, Barry and Stella Rivers and their army of volunteers have brought us their Maui Film Festival–an annual celebration of all things cinema that takes place in the summer. Like previous years, this year’s festival includes dozens of movies–comedies, dramas, surfing documentaries and a host of

others–as well filmmaker panels and elaborate parties (see more on those on page 13). The festival, which runs from Wednesday, June 15 to Sunday, June 19, will also honor a few big-time actors for their exemplary work. This year’s honorees are Bryan Cranston (Walter White from Breaking Bad), Viola Davis (Aibileen Clark in The Help), Kelly Rohrbach (CJ from the upcoming Baywatch movie), Wyatt Russell (Zook from 22 Jump Street) and Michael B. Jordan (Adonis Creed in Creed). The movies will take place at two venues–the famous Celestial Cinema in Wailea, where people sit on blankets under the stars, and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater in Kahului. As far as tickets go, the festival has its usual system of passes that are far too numerous and complex to explain here (check out Mauifilmfestival.com for complete details). So here’s the Maui Film Festival rundown, organized for your viewing pleasure by date and venue. Enjoy!

tarting Wednesday, June 15, Wailea explodes in a bevy of celebrity-studded galas and films for five days. I don’t envy anyone trying to decide what to attend, because you’re going to want to do it all. Here’s the inside info on the parties and a couple of hacks to make the best of your choices. Start the festival off with a dress-your-best party at the Molokini Gardens in the Grand Wailea. Rub elbows with the Who’s Who of the festival while you imbibe and sup elegant hors d’oeuvres made by the resort’s chefs: grilled flat breads, oysters and poke, ribs and uni mac salad, plus a whole section of specialty sweets like halo halo shots, vegan chocolate cake and other delights. You can validate and valet park at the Grand Wailea– remember to go to the second entrance because it’s a shorter walk to the Gardens. The Celestial Cinema starts Wednesday night with the Rising Star Award presentations that go to Kelly Rohrbach and Wyatt Russell. Thursday, the Rainmaker Award will go to Michael B. Jordan. Parking is at the Wailea Resort Event Parking Lot at the top of Wailea Ike Drive. From there, shuttles run continuously starting at 6:15pm. All shuttles will return to the Event Parking Lot at the end of each feature film and special event. If you’re staying in Wailea, a free MFF Shuttle will be available upon request at the front entrance of your resort. Spago’s VIP Soiree and honoree celebration runs you $295 on Thursday. It supports the community screenings. Friday’s decadent event is the biggest chocolate party Maui has ever seen. Four Seasons Pastry Chef Bruce Trouyet is pulling out all his cacao tricks in six sugary action stations. It’s not all truffles either–the savory and sweet pizza options include short rib and beef alongside Nutella and M & M’s. Become the ultimate film nerd and take advantage of the Saturday Filmmakers Panels at $12 each at the Wailea Beach Marriott. They’re full of insight and packed with industry panelists–filmmakers who’ve done the hard work and have a lot to offer budding and seasoned film buffs. The Taste of Wailea is a phenomenon at

Cinematic Heartburn We wish we could send ‘The Lobster’ back ★★★★★ Rated R / 119 Min.
T
he Lobster is about a world where single adults are punished for failing to find a mate and imprisoned in The Hotel. While there, they have 45 days to find a mate or they will be transformed into an animal of their choice. David (played by Colin Farrell) decides that, unless he can hook up with someone, he’d be happy to become a lobster. The one big break I will give The Lobster is that it’s a great conversation piece. Last summer, Rick Chatenever of The Maui News interviewed Colin Farrell, the film’s star, and The Lobster came up. Chatenever asked him to describe the plot, which made for an amusing anecdote. Actually watching the film is another thing entirely. The Lobster is off-putting from the start, with a grating violin score and Rachel Weisz’ course narration. Director Yorgos Lanthimos films each scene in offbeat ways, with off-center framing, boxy composition and dull lighting making for an exceptionally ugly movie. While the set-up is intriguing, there’s
no follow-through on the initial premise, as the story leaves The Hotel and rabbit trails into other random, equally weird but far less compelling subplots. Lanthimos is clearly aiming for the nightmarish brilliance of Luis Bunuel, whose blend of absurdist humor and shocking visuals made him one of cinema’s greatest, most influential masters of surrealism. But The Lobster never works as a comedy or an allegory but only as a self-consciously strange art movie and acting exercise. It’s suggested that every character in this world lacks emotion. The result is that the actors recite their lines in a detached, zombie-like fashion. Farrell and Lea Sedoux, in particular, sound as if they’re reading their lines for the first time, off cue cards. This leaves the audience with no one to connect to. John C. Reilly plays Farrell’s friend at The Hotel and he goes down with the ship. Reilly can typically add creative spark to any movie but he’s ill-used here and shares his co-star’s inability to engage. Lanthimos’ breakout film, the divisive Dogtooth, is an acclaimed work, though I’m not a fan. Both his films portray unorthodox and cruel means of human communication. It allows for an intellectual conversation post-screening but the
I didn't know lobsters could dance
concept is limited. As an allegory, anyone who is/was bitter, single and has a cluster of well-off married friends can relate to the film’s portrayal of elite domesticity. Yet, as a satire, it’s limited. Throwaway jokes about couples raising children and Stand By Me are hardly novel. A couple walked out of the film early into the screening I attended. I’ve never walked out on a movie in my life but this one sure made me want to follow them. There’s a scene in particular where a character describes brutally murdering a dog. We then see the aftermath: a bloodied, dead canine with a hole in its stomach. What follows is one of the most inept
chase scenes ever filmed. The contempt for the audience oozes off the screen. You can feel the strain to make the closing shot poetic but it doesn’t work. My favorite ongoing bit in the film is how a variety of animals wander into the background of many scenes, suggesting the victims of The Hotel remain at large. I laughed when a camel casually walks through a scene, managing to upstage Seydoux, which isn’t easy. For the record, if I had to choose, I would want to turn myself into a bat. That way, I could fly, would have a killer wingspan and be blind, preventing me from ever having to endure The Lobster again. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Stop obsessing about freedom. It’s great on many levels, but it’s not always what it’s cracked up to be. It might not even be necessarily what you want and need right now. You’re pulling a the-grass-is-greener-whereI’m-not head trip, all the while not noticing the emeraldhued shades covering your eyes. Of course it looks verdant and promising over there. Take off the filters and walk over, and you’ll find that it’s as brown and crabgrass covered as your own lawn. By then, though, it’d be too late–walking away from this kind of thing is rarely reversible. Consider sticking around. Spread some new seed and fertilizer; if you still think your neighbor’s lot is better in a month, head on over there then.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Throughout your life, you’ve struggled to choose between two potential responses to volatile situations: anger, or magnanimous forgiveness. You’re big enough to throw your weight around effectively, but you’re also big enough (spiritually) to forgive and forget. This week’s conundrum is a toss-up; you could really handle it either way, which is why it’s so hard to decide which approach would be the best. Allow me to help you choose. Instead of considering things just from your perspective, try to see what’s best for the person at the heart of the problem. Would they benefit more from discipline or absolution? Now the answer’s obvious, right?

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
It never fails. Your birthday season swings around, and for some perverse reason everyone chooses this time of year to dump on you. Luckily, what they’re dishing out now is dramatically different from what you’ve received in years past. The annual Bitchfest is hereby redubbed a Lovefest. Prepare to be showered with affection, praise, respect, and gifts. Bask in it, baby. Don’t let waking up on the wrong side of the bed, or the one or two sour notes in the mix, ruin things for you. This is potentially as sweet as things get, so make sure you enjoy it.
Your Sagittarian brethren may have the option of forgiving and forgetting, but you don’t, at least not this week. When someone tries to walk all over you (or even hints that they might want to), nip that shit in the bud. You’ve got too much power and pride to serve as doormat on any level right now. There are times when you’re required to bend and compromise; this, however, isn’t one of them. You’re likely to lose it should a footprint mar the back of your shirt. And we know what happens when you snap: explosions, big ones. Relationship-leveling TNT. Avoid that kind of mess by standing straight and tall and declaring to all and sundry: You can’t walk here. Go around.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
I sleep better during a storm. The rumble of thunder and the slapping stutter of a hard rain makes me feel cozy and safe in my warm, dry bed. I’m lulled and comforted by all that ferocity just outside my window. Sometimes, when things are quiet, it’s perversely difficult to find that kind of serenity. That’s your problem this week. The tranquility that surrounds you only makes your most unpleasant thoughts louder by contrast. Not that you ought to endeavor to drown them out completely. However, immersing yourself in a bit more noise and activity, so they have to fight to be heard, may give you some perspective on how important (or not) they actually are.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
What am I supposed to do with you? You’ve developed a horribly annoying habit of ignoring advice lately (and not just mine). You know best, huh? Well, maybe that’s true and maybe it’s not. Only time will tell whether your way is really better than the highway. So you’re not prepared to gamble on anything other than your own hunches. Fine. I may not know your best bet as well as you do, but I do know this: If you continue to ask for counsel and then not heed it, some of those whose words you spurn won’t bother to offer them (or anything) next time around. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Who’s your daddy? Where’s your momma? These are vital questions for you this week; you need to get in touch with whomever embodies these energies in your life at the moment–whether they’re your actual parents or not. It’s important to check in with these sweet sources of authority, wisdom, and love every once in a while, especially for you Virgos, who can so easily get caught up in the bustle of life and forget what actually matters. You suck at reminding yourself about that important shit when you’re this busy (which is almost always), so these guys have their work cut out for them. Luckily, they know it. Let them do their job. All you’ve got to do is show up, and listen. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Let someone else drive the car–literally and figuratively. This should be easy for you; you’re no control freak. Just relax, close your eyes, and allow someone to steer. That’s the easy part. Of course, the hard part is deciding just who that someone ought to be. Choose well; your next road trip is apt to be quite a long one. Don’t select the exciting and sexy sprinter who’s first on your list, despite the temptation; instead pick the person who’s good for the long haul, in varied terrain, and who’s more likely to be able to cope with your myriad moods, not just the one you’re in at the moment. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Tossing your nets into the sea is an act of faith. Beyond choosing the right spots to let them loose, you have almost no control over what comes back. You might get some big fish, a desperate drowning dolphin, or a chunk of floating trash. In other words, don’t count on being fed this week; spiritual nourishment is no more likely (or less likely) than a mess for you to clean up, or a lost soul for you to help. The only way to avoid any of this–good or bad–is to keep your nets dry and not try to catch anything at all.
You Fish wear many hats comfortably. Problem is, you’ve only got one head, and donning more than two or three at a time becomes embarrassing and unwieldy. If only you had more than one head. This week, you do, sort of: a handful of willing and at least partially-able assistants who are ready to try on any hat you hand them. Sure, none of them is likely to do as good a job as you would on your best day. But they’ll probably do better than you would if you had to tackle all their tasks at once. Delegate. Everyone will do their best. The result won’t be perfect, or all you hoped for, but it’ll still be better than you expected. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Just remember that old saw: the bigger they come, the harder they fall. It’s supposed to give you courage when you’re up against that implacable fat foe once again this week. Their metaphorical girth is daunting and scary, but you’re spiritually lean, and more than a match for their waddling might. Perhaps this all sounds a bit too epic to describe what you’re actually facing and going through–possibly a petty dispute with your landlord or an ongoing quarrel with a coworker–but it might help to think of it as something legendary. Whip out your slingshot, David. Goliath is going down. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
How many doctors actually give a shit about their patients? Yeah, I’m sure they care on some level–but how many care enough to offer their help to people regardless of ability to pay? Not many. No one ought to work for free all the time; that’s not what I’m suggesting. But not doing anything without money in the hand? That’s messed up. Consider your own motivations. Naturally, some of them need to revolve around getting your bills paid–but if all of them do, something’s seriously wrong. That can’t feel good, either. This week, if your attitude needs fixing, attend to it, please. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
