HAWAII REACTS TO HORRIFIC ORLANDO NIGHTCLUB SHOOTINGS

We still don’t know a whole lot about the early morning shootings at Orlando’s Pulse, a popular LGBT nightclub, except that at least 50 people were killed and about as many injured. There was apparently a single shooter–police killed him after a prolonged stand-off. The FBI interviewed the alleged shooter in 2013 and 2014 on alleged terrorist ties, but he was able to purchase the two guns (one of which was a semi-automatic AR-15) he used in the Pulse attack legally, the ATF has said, according to a June 12 National Public Radio story. His exact motive for the shootings is still unclear, though press reports indicate that he was born in the United States, worked for the private security firm G4S since 2007 and may actually have been homosexual himself. Of course, attacks on LGBT individuals are neither new nor rare. There’s a long and terribly detailed Wikipedia list of such attacks, which shows they occur often and can be quite bloody. Here in Hawaii, LGBT officials reacted to the attack with sadness and defiance. “We stand united with our LGBT ‘ohana members and their family and friends in Orlando that are the victims and survivors of this horrific hate crime,” said Michael Golojuch, Jr., the chair of the Democratic Party of Hawaii’s LGBT caucus. “We will not let this hate crime stop us from living our lives as out and proud members of society. These acts of violence seek to silence us, but they will not deter us from fighting for justice and equality for the LGBTQ community, for immigrants, for women, for the poor or any other minority–for we are not equal until all are equal.” These attacks are terrifying–hence, “terrorism.” The urge to call for greater “security” is powerful, as this statement from LGBT Hawaii’s co-founder Scott Foster makes clear: “With LGBT Pride events now taking place around the world, this is a heartbreaking day for us, the LGBT community in Hawaii and worldwide. We call on LGBTs everywhere to once again stand together to help fight this

latest evil and to urge authorities worldwide to implement appropriate security measures.” Seeking to reassure the state as a whole, Hawaii Gov. David Ige specifically rejected letting “fear and hostility” guide our response to the attacks: “We see on the news today yet another horrific instance of man’s inhumanity to man, triggered by the fear of differences. Let us reject fear and hostility. Let us embrace diversity. Let us affirm life. “Hawaii has some of the toughest laws regulating gun ownership in the nation. This presumed act of terror is a reminder that we cannot become complacent. We must do all that we can to ensure the public’s safety.” The Governor’s office said the U.S. and state flags will be flown at half-staff at all state offices through June 16. There were a few candlelight vigils scheduled for Honolulu the night of the shootings, and Maui Pride hosted one in Kihei on the night of Monday, June 13 on the beach fronting the Maui Sunseeker Hotel. Local Maui officials were there, as was musician Deborah Vial, Maui Pride Vice President Chuck Spence told us.

Like millions of others around the U.S., I got a letter in the mail this weekend telling me that my cable service would not change soon, but later will change dramatically. That’s because the Time Warner Cable-Charter Communications merger has gone through. Among the changes already announced: our cable company now wants us to call it Spectrum (as though it’s a pal and not a giant corporation we send ungodly money to every month in exchange for endless reruns of Big Bang Theory and Keeping Up With The Kardashians). “You may have heard the exciting news,” said Tom Rutledge, the CEO of Spectrum, in the undated letter. “Charter Communications has completed the transaction with Time Warner Cable, and soon you will get to know us by our new name, Spectrum. As the Chief Executive Officer for the company, I can assure you that we are committed to bringing you the most advanced products

I mean, they do internet and phone too, but really, this is about television. “At Spectrum, we are working hard to redefine what a cable company can be,” Rutledge continued, apparently acknowledging that the previous definition of “cable company” is universally reviled. “You will soon have access to the most advanced, fiber-rich network in the nation. In addition to improving service and reliability, we believe you deserve the best possible customer service, which is why we’re bringing over 10,000 outsourced customer service jobs back to the United States.” Yay. Rutledge said in his letter that though “Exciting changes are in the works,” “for the time being, your services will remain unchanged.” Yay? Seriously, will any of this matter? The best statement I’ve found on that question comes from David VanAmburg, the managing director of the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, which gave

Woo! New cable company!

and services for your home. Our state-of-theart, all digital network is capable of delivering all your entertainment, bandwidth and communication needs well into the future.” Sigh. We’re talking about cable TV, right?

Overheard MAN: “So what is that over there? Is that Maui?” WOMAN: “No, it’s the island of Lanai, but it is part of Maui County.” MAN: “So is that island connected? I want to know if there’s a road that goes out there.” WOMAN: “No, it’s a separate island.” MAN: “So none of the islands are connected?” Kaanapali, June 9

Time Warner Cable abysmally low ratings. “Nobody in the cable industry performs particularly well,” VanAmburg said in a May 17 Bloomberg News report on the merger. “One merger isn’t going to change structural issues with pricing, infrastructure and battles with content providers. When there’s not a great deal of competition in an industry, you’re not going to get great satisfaction scores.” Rutledge wants you to go Spectrum. com/merger for more information, but do so at your own risk.

GUESS NO HAIKU YOGA TWINS MOVIE AFTER ALL Shortly after we went to press last week, Judge Blaine Kobayashi threw out the murder case against Alison Dadow, who Maui prosecutors said allegedly killed her own twin sister Ann Dadow by driving their Ford Explorer off the Hana Highway in East Maui. According to various news reports, the surviving Dadow sister has already left Hawaii. So it goes. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

fuel that produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than electricity and many other fuels. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, propane autogas is not a direct greenhouse gas when released into the air, and current research measurements have found no global climate impact from propane autogas emissions. “Since starting our business in 1964, JTB Hawaii has prided itself in providing firstclass travel services and experiences to millions of guests in the Hawaiian Islands and helping to diversify the visitor base that contributes to tourism’s success, Harufuku added. “Equally as important we have constantly looked for ways to improve the communities we work in and make Hawaii a better place for both today and looking into the future. With this effort, we are building on our 52year legacy to serve Hawaii.”

Travel Plaza Transportation (TPT) is converting its entire fleet to zero emission commercial tour buses by 2020 in an effort to set a new clean air standard and fulfill a goal to be Hawaii’s leader in offering tour vehicles that promote sustainability. The new environment-friendly initiative was recently launched at a ceremony at TPT’s Kahului Bus Facility, where they debuted three new eco-friendly El Dorado Aerotech 240 propane minibuses. The new minibuses will go into service in mid-June, making them the first propane buses to be introduced in the state. Each of the three new propane-powered tour buses, as well as any new bus entering TPT’s fleet, will reduce its carbon footprint by 73 percent and 78 percent, respectively, per bus, versus using diesel- and gasolinepowered vehicles. In addition, TPT will realize fuel and maintenance cost savings of approximately $5,000 annually per bus. Most importantly, TPT’s commitment will help the County of Maui and State of Hawaii achieve its clean energy goals. “With the advanced technology of our new propane buses, we can continue to support Maui’s visitor industry by providing a comfortable, quality tour experience, while having far less impact on the environment,” said Tsukasa Harufuku, president and CEO of JTB Hawaii. TPT’s parent company. “We are very proud to be doing our part to help meet the energy-efficiency targets that our elected officials have established for the County of Maui and State of Hawaii.”

TPT president Yujiro Kuwabara said the company is making the eco-friendly commitment because it is the right thing to do from a business and community perspective for the future well-being of Maui and state of Hawaii. “We are not sacrificing any quality with these El Dorado minibuses, as they deliver on all the comforts that guests expect when touring the roadways of Maui,” Kuwabara said. Maui County Energy Commissioner Frederick Redell supports the move. “The County is excited to see new investments that grow our tourism economy while charting a course to a cleaner future,” Redell said. Hawaii Gas President and CEO Alicia Moy also supports TPT’s vision to go green with its fleet. “Hawaii Gas has been providing gas service for hotels, restaurants and homes for over a hundred years and has been on Maui since 1960 and it is the state’s only gas utility and the largest supplier of propane across the islands,” said Moy. “We are honored that Travel Plaza Transportation selected us as a valued partner in this clean energy endeavor for vehicle fuel. Hawaii Gas applauds TPT’s commitment toward innovative strategies in protecting our delicate environment in Hawaii. Propane is one of the cleanest burning fuels, which is why both propane and natural gas are widely used for commercial transportation on the mainland.” TPT’s 25-seat Aerotech 240 propane buses were built in Kansas by El Dorado Bus Company. They are equipped with a Ford Propane Harden Valve Package (E-450 6.8L Gas Chassis) to ensure there is plenty of power and that no performance is compromised when carrying guests. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calls propane a low-carbon alternative

The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa recently received the Hotel of the Year Award for Luxury/Resort Hotels, which is the top honor at the annual Host Hotels & Resorts Best in Class awards. During the April 14 awards, the operators and managers of Host properties across the globe were recognized and celebrated for their accomplishments. “We are overjoyed to be recognized as the Hotel of the Year,” said Allan Farwell, General Manager at Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa. “This honor is a wonderful recognition of all of the hard work and dedication our associates put into providing fantastic guest service. As a premier destination on one of the most beautiful islands in the world, we look forward to welcoming more leisure and business travelers to the resort and sharing our Aloha spirit, and to continue a great partnership with Host Hotels & Resorts.” W. Edward Walter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Host Hotels & Resorts said the organization was pleased to award Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa the Hotel of the Year Award. “This award honors hotels that generated top financial performance, exemplary leadership and entrepreneurship and superior guest and associate satisfaction,” Walter said. “We’re proud of this team for achieving and continuing to strive for excellence.” This is not the first time a Maui resort has been recognized as Hotel of the Year. In 2015, the Fairmont Kea Lani, also a Host Hotels & Resorts property, received the Hotel of the Year Award for Luxury/Resort Hotels. Hyatt Regency Maui’s Hotel of the Year Award comes shortly after the resort’s recognition at the 2016 ‘Aipono Maui Restaurant Awards. Japengo took home three awards, receiving Gold for Best Sushi for the third consecutive year, Gold for Best Asian cuisine and Silver for Restaurant of the Year. ■

By 2009, when Zimbabwe’s central bank gave up on controlling inflation, its largest currency was the 100 trillion-dollar bill–barely enough for bus fare in Harare and not even worth the paper needed to print it. However, that 100 trillion-dollar note (that’s “1” plus 14 zeros) has turned out to be a great investment for several astute traders in London and New Zealand, who bought thousands of them at pennies on the trillion and now report brisk sales to collectors on eBay at US$30 to $40 a note–a six-year return on investment, according to a May report in London’s The Guardian, of nearly 1,500 percent.

Long-divorced Henry Peisch, 56, has seven children, but only one is still living with his exwife (who had originally been awarded $581 monthly support for all seven). (Three children are now independent, and three others successfully petitioned courts to live with Henry.) The resultant hardship (the $581 remains in effect) caused Henry to ask the Bergen County, New Jersey, Family Court several times for a “hardship” hearing, which the court denied (thus even defying the New Jersey Supreme Court). On April 8, Family Court judge Gary Wilcox, noting Peisch’s appearance on a related matter, spontaneously “granted” him his “ability to pay” hearing (with thus no opportunity for witnesses or evidence-gathering)–and summarily jailed him for missing some $581 payments (because, the judge concluded, he did not “believe” Peisch’s hardship claims).

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, in a May publication deriding the value of certain federally funded research, highlighted several recent National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation projects, such as the $13 million for exploring musical preferences of monkeys and chimpanzees; the $1.1 million judging whether cheerleaders are more attractive seen as a squad than individually; the $390,000 to determine how many shakes a wet dog needs to feel dry; and the $5 million to learn whether drunk birds slur when they sing. (Also strangely included was the actually valuable study by Michael Smith of Cornell University ranking where on the human body a bee sting was most painful. He found, from personal testing, that “on the penis” was only the third worst–research that brought Smith a prestigious Ig Nobel prize last year.)

AUSTRALIA! Yahoo News Australia reported (with photos) a man in Tallebudgera Creek on the country’s Gold Coast swimming with his pet snake. The man, standing chest-deep in water, would toss the snake (apparently a carpet python) a few feet and, according to the videos, the snake would swim back to him each time. (In the man’s other hand, of course: beer.) And in April, police in Broome (in Australia’s far northwest) on traffic patrol stopped a 27-year-

old man whose “several” children, including one infant, were unrestrained in his car while “cartons of beer” were “buckled into car seats,” according to an Australian Broadcasting Corp. report. He faces several charges, including driving on a suspended license.

TRANSGENDER BLUES Jai Dara Latto, 23, won the title Miss Transgender UK last September in London, but in February organizers stripped her of the title as being insufficiently trans, passing the crown to Daisy Bell. Officials had spotted Latto (who has worked as a “drag queen”) in a BBC documentary wearing boxer shorts, and since switching underwear is usually such a crucial step for transgenders, officials concluded that Latto must not yet have made a sufficientenough commitment to qualify for the title.

BIRDBRAINS In a recent book, biologist Jennifer Ackerman noted the extraordinary intelligence of birds–attributed to the dense packing of neurons in their equivalent of humans’ cerebral cortex (according to an April Wall Street Journal review of Ackerman’s The Genius of Birds). For example, the New Caledonia crow, among others, knows how to make and use hooked tools to hide food (and retrieve it from tricky-to-reach places), and the blue jay and others, which store many thousands of seeds during autumn, also steal seeds from less-vigilant birds–and they even return to re-hide food if they sense they have been spotted storing it earlier. Additionally, of course, the birds’ equivalent of the human larynx is so finely tuned as to be regarded as the most sophisticated sound in all of nature.

PERSPECTIVE The president of the New England Organ Bank told U.S. News & World Report recently that she attributes the enormous upsurge in donations in recent years to the opiod “epidemic” that has produced a similarly enormous upsurge in fatal overdoses. Now, one out of every 11 donated organs comes as a result of the overdosing that in 2014 claimed over 47,000 lives. (An organ-sharing organization’s chief medical officer reminds that all organ donations are carefully screened, especially those acquired from overdose deaths.)

NATURE 2, FLORIDA 0 Nicole Bjanes, casually zipping along Interstate 4 in Volusia County around noon on May 9, saw a red-eared slider turtle come sailing through the air and crash into her windshield, sending her car off the road. The Florida Highway Patrol said the turtle had become airborne after being hit by another car. (It was apparently unhurt and swam away when a firefighter released it into a nearby pond.) And on May 10, police in Key West responded to a caller at the scene of a giant banyan tree. A woman had attempted to climb the tree but had fallen among the vertical roots, making her barely visible. Said a proud police spokesperson, “They popped her out like a cork.” ■

Off to his left, two people are staring intently into laptop screens. Another is doing the same on his right. Ahead of him in the spacious kitchen, one woman is carefully weaving dark extensions into another woman’s hair. As Oxborrow looks around the room, it’s clear from his expression that it’s all good. These people, and many more, have been in and out of Oxborrow’s house for four days now. They’re the cast and crew of the new Maui-made movie Kuleana. I teasingly ask him if they’ve trashed the place, but he shakes his head. “They’ve been so respectful it’s amazing,” he said. They even gave Oxborrow, an actor himself, a bit part. “I play Lt. McFoler in the movie,” he said. “We shot scenes last week.” In production for the last few weeks, the story of Kuleana comes from Director Brian Kohne, who’s been working on the script here and there for a decade or so. Unlike the slapstick comedy Get a Job–Kohne’s first Maui movie, which he directed in 2010– Kuleana is a thriller. Set on Maui in both 1959 and 1971, the movie tells the story of two Hawaiians, Nohea and Kim, and how they deal with a powerful land developer named Victor Coyle. The movie is ambitious, touching on a variety of concepts

and themes seldom seen in motion pictures–even those set in Hawaii: statehood, the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s, the U.S. Navy’s use of Kaho‘olawe as a bombing range and the Hawaiian language–both its near-extinction and its comeback. “For me, growing up on Maui–having been alive when they were bombing Kaho‘olawe–these things are still heavy on our conscience,” Kainoa Horcajo, a Hawaiian cultural specialist who also has a small role in the movie (“Bill Kanekoa”), told me later that afternoon. “[The movie] is part of a larger societal discussion that we need to have on the future of Maui.” What’s more, at a time when Hollywood routinely casts whites as “locals” (Emma Stone in Aloha is the most recent and appalling example), Kohne has cast actors like Sonya Balmores and True Blood’s Kristina Anapau (she plays “Rose Coyle” in Kuleana, and is the Executive Producer) who are originally from Hawaii. In 2013, I interviewed Kohne at length about his script, which he was still preparing. At the time, he anticipated shooting the movie in 2014, then distributing it to film festivals in 2015. That schedule didn’t work out (because of that age-old friend/enemy of filmmakers: money) but a few weeks ago, Kohne finally got to the point that he could make his film. After inviting me to visit the set, I stopped by Oxborrow’s house–which the crew was using as a “base camp” on Thursday, June 9, which

was the last day the crew was scheduled to shoot on Maui (they flew to the Big Island on June 10 to film some underwater sequences, then wrapped the whole production). After arriving at 10am, Kathy Collins, who’s working as an associate producer as well as location manager, met me outside. She quickly introduced me to actress Sonya Balmores, then left to get back to work. While chatting with Balmores, makeup artist Judy Cunningham did the actress’ hair. Balmores plays the adult version of “Kim”– “I can’t pass for 10 anymore,” she joked. She told me that she knew Stefan Schaefer, who is both Kuleana’s producer and one of its stars (he plays “Victor Coyle,” the land developer). According to Balmores’ IMDB page, she’s previously appeared in the Bethany Hamilton biopic Soul Surfer, the TV series Beyond the Break and a 2014 episode of Hawaii Five-0 (she played a tour bus robber). Balmores grew up in Kauai, but has lived in Los Angeles for the last two years. “There aren’t a lot of local Hawaiian stories,” she told me as Cunningham weaved extensions into her hair. “I wanted to be part of that. Other films in Hawaii may have a moke or an aunty in them, but here, my character speaks Hawaiian.” Though a full-length feature, Kohne has opted for a tight shooting schedule–a mere 15 days. “I’ve never done a shooting schedule this tight,” Director of Photography Dan

Hersey told me later that day. When I mentioned the schedule to Balmores, she simply smiled. “Sooo busy!” she said. “Every day for the last month. We finished at 11 last night. But when they offer you a job in Maui for a few months, it’s hard to say no.” As we talked, it started to rain. The crew gathered around the living room began wondering aloud how it would affect the shoot, which was taking place just down the road. “Will they film in the pouring rain?” one crew member asked. The answer, of course, was yes. Though the crew has already shot scenes in Waiehu, Ma‘alaea and other areas of Central Maui, rain was a new wrinkle they had to deal with. “Today’s the first day it rained,” Balmores said. “But that’s what’s fun about filming in Hawaii–you cannot control the weather.” A few minutes later, Makeup Dept. Head Natalie Bruce, production assistant Felippe De Souza and I are in a minivan headed down the road to the actual set. Setting the movie in two distinct eras (there are also special effects requirements) poses a challenge for Bruce–1950s curls vs. more hippie hairstyles. Still, she was undaunted. “I can do any era of makeup,” she said as De Souza slowly drove us down a dirt side road. Known by the crew as “Grandma’s House,” the set was a grassy field beside a wooden house that dates to the 1930s. Trees ring the property, which sits above a tributary of the Waiehu Stream. It’s a gorgeous piece of prop-

Setting the movie in the past all but requires sweet rides like that

erty, though not all of Kuleana takes place in such lush locations. A few hours after the shoot here ended, the crew caravanned back to Oxborrow’s house to shoot a few scenes in a nearby jungle. There, decaying mangoes covered the ground, which made the air heavy with flies (bug repellant was plentiful). But that was later. At Grandma’s House, a dozen people were clustered around a bright red ‘57 Chevy Bel Air with a sign saying “Coyle Construction” on the door. “The sign was originally much larger,” Jack Grace, a local photographer who’s taking all the movie stills for the production told me a little while after I arrived. “But it wouldn’t stick to the bottom of the door, so they had to cut it down.” It’s the third day the crew’s been at this location. It’s still drizzling, and the crew is huddled under umbrellas (at one point, I was surprised when a production assistant suddenly materialized at my side with an umbrella as I was scribbling in my notepad). The sky is gray, but the overall light is diffuse, an advantage to the crew. And the rain stopped a few minutes after I arrived. There are people all over–prop assistants, lighting assistants, makeup designers, sound people. Everyone, it seemed, had a radio hookup. “It’s highly regulated,” Horcajo told me. “Everybody has their task–not to be cliche, everybody has their kuleana. And the more everyone does their job, everything goes smoothly.” The scene being shot was simple: Coyle (played by Schaefer) is leaning against the Chevy, reading a newspaper blaring the headline “STATEHOOD” when the younger versions of Nohea (played by 11-year-old Ryan Ursua) and Kim (11-year-old Kealani Warner, who was also a classmate of Ursua’s) talk with him briefly. It’s a straightforward scene, 30 seconds on the screen at most, but it was fraught with challenges, some typical to motion pictures, others unique to Maui filmmaking. Kohne wanted a variety of angles in the scene, which took time. The scene called for Coyle to smoke, but because Schaefer’s a nonsmoker, he stood awkwardly with the cigarette between takes. Over and over, the actors–including the kids–repeated their one or two lines as the track-mounted camera films them

from the front, behind, the side and afar. The scene also called for Ursua, who is carrying a rather sharp wooden spear, to thrust it through the newspaper Schaefer’s reading. Grace, who stood next to me for some of the shoot, audibly winced as the spear punched through the prop paper towards Schaefer’s face. “We only have three prop newspapers,” Production Designer Burt Sakata told me. “It was tough getting them printed.” That meant the prop people had to prepare the papers carefully for each shot so the audience wouldn’t see that they’d already been punctured. Keeping that–and myriad other details– straight from shot to shot is known as “continuity” in the movie business, and it’s of supreme importance, especially in a film that jumps between two distinct historical time periods. Seeing a character suddenly wearing slippers when previously filmed with bare feet, or spying the VW bus in the background of a shot set in 1959 would immediately cause the audience to “suspend disbelief,” as movie people like to say, and propel them mentally out of movie. Keeping that from happening in Kuleana is the responsibility of Darren Corrao, the script supervisor. As Kohne moved between the cast and a video screen draped in a black sheet that allowed him to see what the camera was recording, and 1st Director Justin Hogan yelled “Quiet!” and “Action!” and made sure everyone was doing what they were supposed to be doing, Corrao stood a few yards away under a small shelter in front of a laptop that displayed both the visuals being filmed and a copy of the Kuleana script, turned to whatever scene was being filmed. On his shoulders rested responsibility for spotting Continuity errors. At one point during that morning, Corrao noticed that he could see a hole in the newspaper Schaefer was holding before Ursua had punctured it. When shooting shifted to a scene involving Balmores playing with a dog (Lucy, who was actually Oxborrow’s dog), Corrao made clear that the dog couldn’t wear a collar because there was no collar in previous scenes. He also noticed that Schaefer did not pull a Polaroid camera out of the car at the end of the scene, even though earlier scenes included the camera. In fact, the camera was gone–an understandable over-

sight, given the tight shooting schedule, complex time period changes and the fact that Kuleana (like most movies) was shot out of chronological sequence. To help, Corrao takes many, many continuity shots with a smart phone, which allows him to quickly check what an actor was wearing during previous shots. This helped immeasurably during one scene when Corrao noticed that the shirt worn by lead actor Moronai Kanekoa (who plays the elder “Nohea”) didn’t have enough sweat on it to match its appearance in two scenes shot a few days earlier. “So we had to spray the shirt,” Corrao said. When you have so many people working so closely for such long hours, accidents will happen. I was in the house just a few minutes before someone mentioned “the toupee incident” (I found no shortage of cast and crew members willing to corroborate the story). While filming a dramatic scene at Waiehu Stream, Schaefer ended up losing the toupee he’s been wearing in the water. Though crew members jumped in and tried to grab it, they were unsuccessful. Where the toupee ultimately ended up, no one could say, though Schaefer later told me that Kathy Collins brought in one of her wigs, which after trimming, worked just fine. Schaefer moved to Maui seven years ago. He met Kohne in a way that, to use a cliche, is straight out of a movie: he answered a Craigslist want ad for a movie producer. The ad was for Get A Job (he had a small role in that movie as well). Many of the crew members worked on Get A Job, or for Schaefer when he produced movies in New York in the past, or both. “We have a terribly ambitious shooting schedule,” Schaefer told me when his scenes were wrapped up. “It’s only working because we have so many people pitching in. Shooting seven to eight pages a day is aggressive in a studio setting. In the elements, it’s lunacy. But we’re pulling it off so far.” “I’m lucky production’s still talking to me,” Kohne half-joked between takes. “It’s just a really ambitious project. The shooting schedule is dictated by money.” Kohne refused to talk to me about the specifics of the movie’s budget. In 2013, he told me he could make Kuleana for $1 million. On the set itself, he would only say that his budget

is less than that amount. This is hardly surprising, given Kohne’s story–do you want to go pitch a movie in which the antagonist is a land developer to potential investors on Maui? Still, Kohne insisted that having the full million wouldn’t have made much difference. “I can’t say that we would have made a better movie,” he said. “I don’t know how anyone could’ve done what we’ve done here. It’s the result of the commitment and passion of so many.” Still, Kohne said it’s better than his experience on Get A Job. “With Get A Job, we were all going through it for the first time,” he said. “This time, I knew what to shoot, and what not to.” As everyone was wrapping up the shoot at Grandma’s House (which involved a dozen or so vehicles up the road to Oxborrow’s place), Kohne thanked the property owner for the use of the place. “So when I can go to the mall and see the movie?” he asked. Kohne hesitated. “Not sure it’s going to be at the mall,” Kohne said. “We’re going to focus on international festivals first.” Kohne estimates that he’ll be editing the movie all summer, with a final cut ready in October. Willie K will score it. Given all that Kohne has taken on himself, it’s remarkable he’s made it this far. Not only has Kohne made a motion picture, but he’s nearly finished with a second one in a completely different genre–all filmed here in Hawaii. This isn’t a big studio flying an expensive, big-name cast to the islands for a few exterior shots, then doing the rest in Southern California sound stages. What Kohne is attempting to do transcends merely making a movie on Maui–he’s trying to make a Maui movie industry. One dedicated to letting Maui people tell Maui stories. It’s been difficult and expensive, and though Kohne said he has been able to use Hawaii tax credits for local film productions, the rest of the work and support comes from himself and his crew. “It’s a real leap of faith,” Kohne told me. “This is not for the timid. But if Kuleana inspires one filmmaker or one writer to take a leap, then we’ve achieved our goal.” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Mediterranean Grill OR, HOW YOU CAN GET GREAT LEBANESE-STYLE FOOD IN HAIKU Mediterranean Grill 810 Haiku Rd. 808-868-3518

I

Chicken Shawarma

kept hearing great things about the Mediterranean food truck in Haiku from my friends who live and work nearby, so I scheduled a recent lunch meeting there. The Haiku Cannery parking lot is bursting with food trucks and stands, and for the time being there is Mediterranean, Indian, tacos and Thai food right across the street from Fukushima Store. The Friday I stopped by, the Indian truck was unexpectedly closed. Such is the way with food trucks, but the guys at the Mediterranean Grill say they’re there every day (except Tuesdays) from 10:30am to 8:30pm. It’s a family run operation (the day I was there I met a cousin of the owner, and the owner’s brother was expected that afternoon). Mediterranean can mean a lot of things when talking about food, but this particular truck does it Lebanese style with lamb gyro, shawarma and falafel with other sides. I started by asking for recommendations. The falafel is really popular there, but so is the chicken shawarma, which is served in a pita, as a plate with rice and sides or on a salad. I was intrigued by the shawarma–marinated chicken breast cut into bite size cubes and grilled with peppers and onions, then topped with an incredible tahini sauce–and I always seem to get lamb. I ordered the shawarma

on a salad, while my friends got the sandwich. It’s full of flavor and huge, too. We also got a few sides. A plate of dolmas with pita bread is about $5 and a complete meal in itself. I love the distinct flavor of grape leaves in dolmas, and they serve theirs with tzatziki sauce, which was delicious. We also got a side of hummus–their own homemade blend that’s so better and fresher than the pre-made selections at the market. The hot toasty pita corners served with it are delicious, too. The owners say it’s the typical standard pita they import, but to me it’s a step above. Unfortunately, I didn’t notice that they have a shrimp special until after I ordered and sat down in the little courtyard they created with potted plants and umbrellas over tables. If you’re looking at the menu, take a few steps back and look for the handwritten notes around the ordering window so you don’t miss out on specials. Mediterranean Grill recommends their baklava for dessert, but I was so full of shawarma I didn’t get the full enjoyment of this traditional sweet of honey, spices and walnut. Luckily I took one home and had it later with a cup of tea. It was so sensational I regretted not buying a bunch to take home. I won’t make that mistake the next time I visit the truck. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

The Horror! The Horror! ‘The Conjuring 2’ will make you jump, and that’s a good thing ★★★★★ Rated R / 134 Min.

I

t’s fitting that the opening point-ofview shot of the The Conjuring 2 is looking out the window of 112 Ocean Ave., Amityville, New York. If that address doesn’t register, you probably don’t like horror movies and definitely should not see this one. For everyone else, this visual, the first of many dazzling camera moves throughout the film, sets a distinct mood. Writer/director James Wan loves movies that make us jump, and is paying homage to the era of horror movies he grew up on. He’s clearly had a ball making another cinematic, jerry-rigged haunted house. It’s set in 1977 (the same year as The Nice Guys, currently out from the same studio) but never references one of the biggest horror films of that year, Exorcist II: The Heretic. Wan can rest assured that he’s made a better sequel than that infamous flop. Anyway, real-life ghost busters Ed and Lorraine Warren are again played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who become famous for their investigation of

the Amityville occurrences. Big-time scary and full of virtuoso filmmaking, The Conjuring 2 is even better and scarier than its predecessor. It’s also long and full of so many frightening set-pieces that it becomes an exhaustive experience. As in the first film, the characters are engaging but too thinly crafted. The chemistry between Farmiga and Wilson is genuine but you want far more insight into their fascinating characters than the movie is willing to give us. Nevertheless, the performances are strong enough from the large ensemble cast, including the seldom-seen Franka Potente, the star of Run Lola Run and The Bourne Identity. Best of all is Frances O’Conner (so amazing as the mother in A.I. Artificial Intelligence), making the working class anguish her family experiences from a violent poltergeist seem real. I love Wan’s movies, which utilize old school scares, shudder-inducing sound effects and vivid art direction. His overpraised debut, Saw, and the franchise that followed, are unworthy of their popularity. What came after, however, were Wan’s Dead Silence, the first two (and best) Insidious films and Annabelle (which he

Usually the sideburns scare the ghosts, but if not then I have to use the cross

produced). All were great. Horror movies can be endurance tests of sickening violence and human depravity but Wan smartly makes his movies exercises in true suspense and tributes to the masters of horror before him. Both Conjuring movies are a bit much but they are fun, if utterly dread-inducing and capable of rattling the most jaded horror movie fan. One scene that goes over the line is the pre-title sequence, which recreates the DeFeo murders at the Amityville home. While as stylish a set-piece as everything else here, exploiting this horrible true incident again for cheap thrills is questionable. It’s also an unnecessarily violent scene, in a movie that otherwise earns its

shocks by being clever instead of explicit. There are genuinely heartfelt moments sprinkled throughout, which are a welcome relief from the constant spooky stuff. While there are dozens of scenes that either set up or deliver massive scares, there is an actual point to all of this. The moral is clearly vocalized that we should never allow fear to control us. The central ghost, referred to as “Bill Wilkins,” is compared to a school bully. Seeing a small boy stand up to the frightening spirit, the way he would to a kid taking his lunch money, is moving. It’s easy to imagine that, in about a decade, that kid will be wearing a proton pack and kicking ecto-butt for a living. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You’re goofy, quirky, friendly, unique, eminently likable, creative, funny, talkative… and the list of your positive qualities truly goes on and on. But sometimes people have trouble taking you seriously. This can extend to imagining a serious relationship with you, or just trusting you with their innermost feelings, or similarly intimate things. Of course, you and I know you’re up for this kind of heavier stuff as well. It’s not even that those denying you think you’re unworthy. They simply assume you’re uninterested. They’re wrong, of course, but how to show it? Figuring out that dilemma is this week’s assignment.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Cut up your metaphorical credit cards. Living in perpetual material debt is one thing, especially because you’ve mostly accumulated it acquiring experiences, not possessions. But spiritual debt is another story, and it’s definitely not healthy to let it build up or stick around long. Before you know it, it’ll be holding you back on so many levels it won’t matter where you go, how much money you spend, or even who you sleep with. Scary, right? You know what you need to do. Make things right. Remember–this isn’t the kind of debt you simply pay off. It’s the kind of debt you transcend. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

You water signs are nothing if not totally yourselves. You get into the most trouble when you try to conform to other people’s expectations, simply because you’re fluid enough to effortlessly flow into the molds they’ve created for you–temporarily. That same dynamism, however, makes staying within the lines your parents, friends, and lovers have drawn practically impossible. Resist assuming the shape or adopting the timetable someone wants you to take on. Tell them you’re a precocious late bloomer and you need to approach tasks in your own way and time. Be clear: They can accept that, or get out of your way.

YOGA & MOVEMENT STUDIO

Hate is hate and love is love. Embrace the latter and resist the former. They both breed themselves, so think about which you want to see more of in the world. Love is an action, not just a feeling, and there are few better at taking disciplined, thoughtful action than you Caps. Lead by example and show what it means to practice compassion and love. Let it infuse everything you do–your work especially, since you do so much of that. Even if you’re not a natural born leader, you usually find yourself with a significant degree of influence. Wield it to create more of the stuff that matters–not money, but love. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Astrological forces are conspiring to make you crazy attractive. You’ll attract loads of loving attention, of varying types and intensities, without even trying. It’s not that the coming months will be drab and tedious by comparison; it just might not be quite this special (due to circumstances more than people). So enjoy it while it lasts. Above all, please don’t play the pleasure-deferring games you sometimes get mixed up in, because at least some of the current pleasantness is definitely of the nowor-never variety. Grab it, or give it up. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Bees communicate by dancing, and so should Virgos. You talk too much, you think too much, you do too much. I’m not foolhardy enough to advise you to actually chill out and lay around; you’d never do it, unless someone huge (and not ticklish) sat on you and made you do it. You’ve got too much energy to burn. But give your brain a break, okay? My advice for this week is so simple it’s ridiculous: dance. Dance until your arches fall, your clothes are soaked, and you can’t stop smiling. Doesn’t matter where or how or with whom. Just do it. I guarantee you’ll have a better idea, when you’re finished, of exactly where the honey is.

Some things should stay in the realm of fantasy. Living in a gingerbread house or coating your lover in hot fudge; these are actually more likely to be gross than appealing. Many of your other sexual and emotional desires are equally unappetizing when removed from the fuzzy confines of your imagination. In there, it’s easy to edit certain details out, fast forward through slow or clumsy sections, and linger on the good stuff. Remember that this week, when the opportunity to actualize a fantasy of yours manifests. Will it translate, or deteriorate? Might it keep better in your head, where you can savor it for years?

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

You wear intensity like a mink coat on a sultry midsummer afternoon. You wish you could step out of it sometimes, I know, but it’s no use trying. The heat, in any case, isn’t external; it’s coming from within, and there’s no off switch. Also, for good or ill, you’re not the only one feeling the burn; you’re just the only one who can’t decide whether or not you want to sweat it out. Whether you desire company in this emotional sauna is your decision; if you do, however, now’s the time to sweeten the deal–start buying ice cream and air conditioners like there’s no tomorrow, and whoever you want to stick around might do just that.

SATURDAY JUNE 18TH @11AM

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Sometimes you want a dog collar to wear, and someone to hold the leash. It’s not because you’re especially kinky. You just often long for someone to take care of you, to absolve you of all responsibility. If you’re unlucky enough to be exceptionally goodlooking or talented, someone might actually play this role for you–until you’re about 25, at which point they’d probably leave you high and dry. Resist donning the collar this week, or ever again (except for an occasional evening’s bedroom experiment). It’s a harsh truth, but it’s better you accept (and cope with) it sooner, rather than later: you might have allies in this life, but mostly, you’re on your own.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Some complain that Librans lack stick-to-it-iveness. It’s not that you don’t have the strength or discipline to see something through to its end; it’s that you sometimes don’t care enough to bother. That’s not necessarily a critique; you move on well, and usually for good reasons and to better things. But occasionally you need to stand your ground and stick something out, even if it’s unpleasant, or you’re lured by (supposedly) better things, or even if you believe the venture is doomed. Plant your heels, please. Ignore the carrots and sticks goading you toward new territory. Right here’s where you’re supposed to be, so stay.

CLASSIC ROCK

Stock your freezer with bags and bags of frozen peas. You’ll need them for all the bruises, black eyes and assorted other injuries you’re sure to acquire this month. And that’s good news. Remember, collecting minor wounds is apparently what passes for fun in your world lately, filled with rough and tumble sports, crazy-ass sex, and juvenile horseplay. You can take it. In fact, it’s downright good for you; considering who you are and what you’re capable of, if you’re not playing rough enough to hurt yourself (just a little) right now, you’re not really living your life. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Be careful whose fingernails you let scrape across your skin this week. There’s only so many scratches you can blame on the cat. I hear you telling me: “But I’m not breaking any rules.” Maybe not technically, but I’m guessing there are a few unwritten rules whose lines you’re crossing. Maybe it’s time you expanded beyond those boundaries–it could be that they’re just too limiting. But don’t you think it’d be better to do it on the up-and-up, with everyone’s knowledge (and perhaps, if you’re lucky, blessing)? To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
