tified that the Community Farmland Council has not collected the required amount of valid signatures needed to advance to the Council a petition to establish a program to acquire and lease agricultural lands, County Clerk Danny Mateo announced today,” stated a June 13 county press release. “On April 18, the Community Farmland Council submitted an initiative petition that contained 11,339 signatures, and a supplemental petition on June 1 that contained 6,827 signatures,” Mateo said in the news release. “Our office has reviewed both submissions and determined that 7,305 registered voters in the County of Maui have signed the petitions, while 10,861 signatures have been deemed invalid.” MCFC spokesperson Bruce Douglas put on a brave face in a June 13 press release. “What is important is that 18,166 people signed the petitions by the Clerk’s count. Considering 46,005 voted in the last election, this

Haleakala National Park wants your help in determining how best to deal with the feral animals that make life difficult for the native species that live in Nu‘u, park officials announced yesterday. “Haleakala National Park Service, in partnership with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, is working to protect and restore 2,115 acres of habitat for native species in Nu‘u, on the leeward slope of Haleakala,” states a June 14 press release from the park. “In support of this effort, management and removal of feral animals has been proposed and an Environmental Assessment prepared to analyze the effects of implementing that action.” The Nu‘u region is “one of Maui’s largest undeveloped tracts of land,” according to the Environmental Assessment (EA). It contains numerous “rare, threatened and endangered plant and animal species,” as well as offers habitat protection for them. It “once contained tropical dryland forest, which are among the most diverse yet threatened ecosystems in the world,” according to the EA, and is a “near-ideal candidate” for restoration. There are also “many significant Hawaiian cultural sites” in the region. What to do with the feral species that decimate native species in Nu‘u–and on Maui in general–is one of the most important ecological issues we’re facing today. The EA explains why in considerable detail. “Adverse impacts from feral ungulates on native plant and wildlife species, as well as habitat in general, is well documented in Hawai‘i and has resulted in extensive biodiversity loss,” states the EA. “Grazing and digging for roots by feral animals result in damage to ground cover and consumption of native plants. Soil disturbance from these activities results in erosion and sediment run-off. Disturbed earth is vulnerable to colonization by non-native plant species. Native wildlife species have evolved in the absence of large predators and are especially vulnerable to predation

and loss of habitat caused by their presence. These impacts are listed as significant threats in several US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Conservation and Recovery Plans, including the recovery plan for the ‘ua‘u.” But what to do about the feral goats, pigs, dogs and axis deer that also live there? They destroy native habitat and kill native birds and their nests. The park’s press release uses the term “management,” which is basically meaningless. The EA itself refers to “a combination of non-lethal and lethal methods,” which would include an “ungulate control fence.” “Management and removal of feral animals will provide protected habitat for endangered ‘ua‘u, and potentially other federally listed or candidate species,” states the EA. “HNP biologists postulate that ‘ua‘u from the protected areas of Haleakala are currently attempting to nest in Nu‘u. The area will be managed for ‘zero tolerance’ of feral animals in perpetuity. Intensive control efforts to removal animals to ‘near zero’ population is expected to occur for the first year.” At least one person has already weighed in on the plan at MauiTime Facebook’s page. Laurelee Blanchard, who runs the no-kill Leilani Farm Sanctuary in Haiku, is appalled at the idea of killing invasive species. “Alexander & Baldwin could dedicate a couple hundred acres of land (that was once used to grow sugarcane) to provide a safe sanctuary for the relocation of feral goats, deer,

and pigs who are deemed to be ‘invasive,’” Blanchard wrote in a comment on our story, which was posted on our Facebook page on June 15. “The animals would be treated humanely, neutered, and allowed to live out their lives in an environment where they would be treated with kindness. The State of Hawaii or the County of Maui could also designate land for the purpose. This is in keeping with the aloha spirit! Let’s do it.” Federal officials want the public to comment on this plan, but the comment period is only open until the middle of July. Those wishing to comment may do so by email (to HALE_Superintendent@nps. gov) with the subject line “Nu‘u EA,” or by regular mail (Attention: Nu‘u Environmental Assessment, Haleakala NP, P.O. Box 369, Makawao, HI, 96768). All comments must be received by close of business on July 14, 2016.

Looks like no land reform for Maui County

COMMUNITY FARMLAND COUNCIL INITIATIVE REJECTED Bad news for the Maui Community Farmland Council (MCFC)–their effort to get a ballot measure that would break up big agricultural holdings in Maui County (read: A&B) through eminent domain and redistribute the land to organic farmers has failed to gather the minimum number of signatures. “The Office of the County Clerk has cer-

is a highly significant number,” stated the news release. “These people declared their wish that the sugarcane lands be converted into the world’s largest community-owned organic agricultural park. These people choose pubic [sic] ownership over corporate ownership. These people choose organic ag over chemical ag. These people choose food security over developments on prime ag lands. This dream will live on and will one day be fulfilled.” The MCFC had also put forward a District Voting Charter Amendment, but has shelved that until 2018, Douglas said in the June 13 press release. “The District Voting Charter Amendment also gathered a significant number of signatures toward its goal that have no expiration date. These will be saved for the 2018 election,” said Douglas in the press release. “With the likely prospect of a County Manager Charter Amendment for 2016 election, we have decided it better to wait until the 2018 election for the voters to decide on district voting of County Council members.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

SURFRIDER MAUI WANTS TO PROTECT PEAHI In honor of International Surf Day on June 21, Surfrider Foundation’s Maui Chapter announced it will highlight its critical new campaign: Protect Pe‘ahi. The chapter supports the community-based effort to acquire, protect and manage 267 acres of the Hamakualoa Maui coastline, from East Kuiaha Gulch to West Kaupakakalua Gulch in Pe‘ahi. The Foundation said this commitment is consistent with their role as an advocate for public coastal access and the protection of special places. In support of this goal, Surfrider has pledged to support the ongoing care and management of this coastline by launching its “Protect Pe‘ahi” campaign to lend support to cultural groups and lineal descendants of the area who

Imua Family Services celebrated the 40th anniversary of Camp Imua with a week-long overnight recreational camp for children with disabilities and special needs. The camp–which ran from Sunday, June 12 through Thursday, June 16–was organized in 1976 by volunteers led by Penny Elkins to provide a fun-filled week of camp experiences for Maui’s keiki. Every year in June, children age 6-16 come to Camp Maluhia in the West Maui Mountains for an exciting week of crafts, games, swimming, surfing, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, dancing, concerts, outdoor movies, helicopter tours, a talent show and a special closing ceremony luau. More than 200 campers and volunteers come together for the special camping experience. In 2012, under the threat of being discontinued due to a lack of operating funds, a group of volunteers put together the Paddle Imua benefit ocean race as a fundraiser for Camp Imua. For five years, Bluesmiths Crafted Waterwear has been the title sponsor for Paddle Imua allowing the event to grow year after year. With the help of other event sponsors, businesses, the Maui community and an army of volunteers, Paddle Imua has become Maui’s premier benefit ocean sports event raising funds to ensure Camp Imua lives on.

This year’s closing night dinner on July 16 will include a special ceremony marking Camp Imua’s 40th anniversary. The event will feature a luau feast provided by the Ka‘anapali Beach Hotel, which has been a Camp Imua supporter since 1992. Over the last 40 years, thousands of Maui’s special needs children, high school caregivers and a host of other behind-the-scenes volunteers have attended the annual event.

are directing efforts to care for the land. Protect Pe‘ahi Campaign manager Mike Ottman said the first goal of the campaign is to work with the many families and cultural practitioners connected to the lands who are urging the County administration to begin negotiations with Alexander & Baldwin to acquire the 267 acres. The acquisition plan may be divided into two distinct phases, the first phase focusing on lots 1, 3, 4, and 5, and the second phase focusing on the Oili lot. Surfrider gratefully acknowledges the Maui County Council’s unanimous decision to allocate $9.5 million dollars from the Open Space Fund to purchase Kuiaha Lots 1, 3, 4, and 5, and Mayor Arakawa for signing the budget. The campaign also plans to help raise funds for land management costs and be a part of community outreach mobilizing volunteers to care for the land, once it is preserved. Surfrider is part of community effort to protect this historically significant part of the the North Shore. Malama Hamakua Maui, a nonprofit group formed by lineal descendants and cultural practitioners of the area, is partnering with Surfrider Maui, the Waikikena Foundation, the

Haiku Community Association, local schools and youth centers, the Hawaii Farmer’s Union Haleakala branch, equestrian and biking groups, and other community groups to advocate for protection and plan management of the coastal lands and culturally significant gulches. The World Surfing League is also willing to support the efforts as part of continued access for their annual big wave contest. The groups have a shared vision of the land as a place of cultural use and education, recreational access, local agriculture and open space vistas. Surfrider will organize and sponsor a community-galvanizing event in October to raise awareness, funds and community momentum in support of this vision to “Protect Pe‘ahi.” For more information, or to join the cause, contact Surfrider Foundation’s Maui Chapter via Maui.surfrider.org.

As an alternative to the more costly invitro fertilization, researchers at a Dresden, Germany, institute announced (in the recent Nano Letters) that they had developed a motorized device tiny enough to fit around a sperm’s tail and which could be commanded to propel it to “swim” faster toward the target egg, increasing the chances of fertilization. A prototype is still in the works.

Life is good now for British men who “identify” as dogs and puppies, as evidenced by a BBC documentary (“Secret Life of the Human Pups”) showing men in body outfits (one a Lycra-suited Dalmatian, “Spot”), exhibiting “sexual” expressions (stomach-rubbing, ear-tickling and nuzzling their “handlers”), eating out of bowls, gnawing on chew toys, wearing collars (so as not to be a “stray”), and jumping in the air for “treats.” (However, decency demands that a Pup must only feign urinating against a lamppost.) Said Spot (aka Tom), “It’s about being given license to behave in a way that feels natural, even primal.” Added “Bootbrush,” “[We] are trying to grasp the positive elements of the archetype of the dog.”

As Libya’s central bank struggles to stabilize a halting economy, it could surely use the estimated $184 million in gold and silver coins that Moammar Gadhafi minted but left buried in an underground vault in the coastal city of Beyda, but the treasure is inaccessible because central bank officials don’t know the lock’s combination (as The Wall Street Journal reported in May). The latest plan is to have a locksmith squeeze through a 16-by-16-inch hole in the outer vault’s concrete wall and once inside to try his hand. If unsuccessful, the government’s bureaucrats likely cannot get paid, but even if successful, various anti-government factions may go to extremes to snatch the coins.

BRIGHT IDEAS Argentina’s TV channels have many of the same taboos as U.S. broadcasting, including restrictions on women’s hands-on demonstration of how precisely to examine themselves for breast cancer. However, as AdWeek reported in March, the agency David Buenos Aires apparently solved the problem with a TV public service announcement featuring a model (facing the camera, topless) showing exactly how such an exam should go, e.g., where to press down, where to squeeze. The secret? The model was an overweight man with generous-sized “manboobs.”

WAIT, WHAT? Video surfaced in May of students at Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio, Texas, actually playing jump rope with the intestines of cats that had been dissected in biology class. Obviously, People

for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was not pleased, but school district officials called the exercise a valid demonstration of the “tensile strength of the organ” and only reluctantly agreed to investigate further.

SPECIAL FRAUD When Triston Chase, 20, missed his court date in April in Harnett County, North Carolina, on financial fraud charges, it was revealed that his arrest in December had come when he had been found “residing” illegally, as a civilian, in a barracks at Fort Bragg–in a facility housing the Army’s 3rd Special Forces Group. According to a prosecutor, Chase had been posing as an explosive ordnance disposal specialist “for months.” The official investigation of Special Forces’ barracks “security” was still underway at the time of Chase’s court date.

WEIRD ANIMALS Among the critters for which life is most difficult are male nursery web spiders that (according to May research in Biology Letters) instinctively “court” females with food wrapped in silk–offerings that (a) increase the males’ chances of scoring and (b) decrease, by 84 percent, their chances that the female will spontaneously eat the male. The study also found that males sometimes try to mate using non-food items wrapped in silk (with mixed results) and also that sometimes unscrupulous females accept food gifts but nevertheless immediately devour the male.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS James Kinley III, 27, was charged in York County, South Carolina, in May with dealing marijuana. He apparently had the (unfounded) belief that York County deputies do not monitor Craigslist–because that is where Kinley advertised (“I Sell Weed”), in a notice with his photo, address and price ($200). And Grady Carlson, 58, went to the Carolina Title Loans office in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on May 25 to apply for a high-interest “payday” loan–and nervously paced while answering questions. The Carolina employee asked if anything was wrong, and Carlson allegedly disclosed that he needed money–fast!–to purchase methamphetamine. A subsequent police search turned up a glass container and drugs.

RECURRING THEMES (COW EDITION) For years, India has been concerned about the gas-release problem posed by its nearly 300 million cows (and 200 million more gasintensive animals), but researchers in Kerala state revealed a promising breeding answer in May: dwarf cows (about one-fourth the size, producing somewhat less milk but one-seventh the manure and one-10th the methane). Pound for pound, methane traps 25 times as much heat as carbon dioxide. ■

The Woman Behind

The Gown Miss Maui Filipina Amelia Laborte breaks expectations both in her pageant and culture. By Jade Boren

F

PHOTO COURTESY MISS MAUI FILIPINA PAGEANT

10 JUNE 23, 2016

ilipinos do not settle for minimalism. The sequins, lace, sparkles and puffy dress sleeves that adorned the three contestants at the 2016 Miss Maui Filipina Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, June 11, 2016 were visual proof of this. Even the paper slips for the onstage question phase were drawn from a zebra print bag. But it was the woman in the simple black terno that caused an uproar. “I did not have this terno made for me, nor did I purchase it, but it was passed down three generations before me and belonged to my great grand aunt Grace Laraway from Manila in the Philippines,” pageant contestant Amelia Laborte said as she began her speech. There were no ruffles or layers interrupting her hand as it made its way down alongside her traditional dress’ straight empire cut. The crowd let out a collective gasp, the scene replaying the surprise of the mock judges when they listened to Laborte’s words three days earlier. Much like her dress, Laborte opted for extreme humbleness. Instead of going for the usual strategy of linking your life story to the gown’s

history, the 22-year-old contestant–who works as a dancer at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa’s Wailele Polynesian Luau–gunned straight for the dress the moment she took the microphone. Soon after delivering her speech, Laborte received a generous-sized crown to play up her modest terno. “When I was backstage about to go on, I had to hold back my tears because I was so proud to wear that dress,” Laborte, this year’s Miss Maui Filipina, said a few days after the pageant, over a cup of coffee. Hair in a bun, loose tank top on, Laborte did not let the poise slip from her voice despite answering questions seated in Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center’s crowded Starbucks instead of standing on a hushed Maui Arts & Cultural Center stage. “I could just feel all my family, just knowing that I had it on, like they’re so proud that I’m actually being able to show how special it was to all of them before,” she said. From the get-go, Laborte directed her spotlight towards the true subject of the pageant: her Filipino heritage. The pageant was not just about adding a customary Filipino dance in between the swimsuit and talent phases. Nor was it about whose

undertaking he and his group plan to do next February. She raised her hand at this point of the conversation, exhibiting her “Sign me up!” attitude towards Nava’s philanthropic cause. With a trip that could last up to two weeks, Laborte can

now fulfill Peterson’s and her own wish to act as a pioneer of goodwill for her Filipino community. Back home, Laborte still plans on sustaining her fellow Filipinos and other community members–but with food. Laborte’s passion for cooking became evident during a fast recital of her favorite egg recipes, Miss Maui Filipina’s voice bumping up in excitement when she got to eggs benedict and quiches. With this enthusiasm, Laborte hopes to combine the skills she learned as a degree holder from the University of Hawaii Maui College’s Culinary Arts Program with a future education in nutritional science to apply a creative twist on healthy eating. The $10,000 in scholarship money to Argosy University that Laborte received at the pageant may just get her started on the prerequisites she needs to jumpstart her career. Whether it’s filtering water for cyclone victims or advancing closer to that diploma, the Miss Maui Filipina Scholarship Pageant has kicked down obstacles that may have hindered Laborte’s goals in the past. Chelsea Guzman, Miss Hawaii Filipina 2015 and a former Miss Maui Filipina, could barely say one op-

- Pageant director Yvienne Peterson one another less, the higher they climbed. Peterson made it clear she would have none of these “haters” in her pageants. “For my thing it’s very important to have these young women understand that

there’ll always be only one queen, only one winner, but I need you guys to understand that this is a sisterhood where we support each other,” Peterson said. This attitude was evident in the rehearsal room a few days before the pageant. As Peterson watched fellow contestants Audrey Casicas and Ashlyne Rosalin dance alongside Laborte, the pageant director occasionally shouted out “hands are off on that one,” “pivot,” and “TEETH” to no one in particular. A spectator would have never sensed bias towards Laborte. No hints of tension would have disturbed an onlooker’s senses either. Even when antiquated Filipino melodies did not overpower any noise between the walls, the contestants’ laughter filled the room every time the music paused–that is, right before they started to harmonize their own tune. Peterson’s concept of sisterhood extends beyond women just getting along and laughing with one another. The guests showing up to the rehearsal proved to be the support that the pageant director had earlier boasted. Former Miss Maui Filipina Scholarship Pageant contestants, women who had undergone the pageant rounds from the 1990s to last year, offered bits of advice and encouraging smiles as this year’s pageant women practiced their walks and speech deliveries. The lack of pet favorites and envious eyes in the room served as evidence to the spirit of Bayanihan (community) that the Miss Maui Filipina Scholarship Pageants have carried for 58 years. Laborte will now prep solo with Peterson for the 2016 Miss Hawaii Filipina pageant to take place on July 30 here on Maui, but she has her pageant sisters behind her. On that past Saturday night, the audience members may have seen Laborte’s simple black terno for its extensive Filipino lineage. The gown could have also triggered the same gasps for the ever-expanding Filipina sisterhood it represented. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

gown had that classic “Filipina” look. It was about embodying the true Filipina spirit, even while strutting out in flirty dresses to Jennifer Lopez onstage. “It’s just, who you are is your culture,” she said. “It shouldn’t be, you know, your grandparents yelling at you because ‘you’re not doing this, you’re not doing that,’” she added, pointing her finger at invisible (guilty) keiki. Though Laborte prided her terno gown for the hands that passed it down for over eight decades, she did not want old stereotypes of her culture to dictate her. Hawaii’s first Filipinos may have endured hours of bending over to hoe rows of sugarcane, but Laborte did not rely on the usual Filipino adjectives like “hardworking” and “disciplined” as she spoke into the microphone. Laborte got playful onstage as she talked about her ancestry, using the words “elegant,” “flamboyant” and “colorful” to relate to her great grand aunt. Pageant director Yvienne Peterson is also all about taking the Filipino culture in a new direction. Peterson saw her pageant as an opportunity to get younger people involved in the Filipino community, a circle that follows the leadership of the elderly. Peterson worries that a failure to bridge the younger and older generations will result in a static community that will see no change. “I know our culture is traditional–very, very traditional–and I’m trying to make them understand, hey, there are a lot of younger ones now leading the community and eventually that line will have to replace you guys,” Peterson said, who shared a bench with Laborte at Starbucks. Laborte’s post-pageant plans fall in line with Peterson’s vision. She will not limit her ambassador duties to next month’s Miss Hawaii Filipina 2016 pageant. Being crowned Miss Maui Filipina comes with a free trip to the Philippines, a ticket which Laborte will not use to just canoe around Palawan Island and indulge on chicken drumsticks at a Jollibee. A visit to Tacloban, a city in dire need of clean water, is on Laborte’s to-do list. Laborte has wanted to help Lahaina Rotarian Rick Nava ever since he shared his mission of providing clean water to the tropical cyclone-devastated city, an

portunity without jumping to the next that the pageants have opened for her. Guzman had stopped by a practice the Wednesday before the pageant to watch her successors prepare. “I’ve met a lot of people who’ve had access to scholarship funds, and so I’ve gotten access to a lot of opportunities, and there have been a lot of people also who’ve been telling me about job opportunities,” Guzman said. Such opportunities included introductions to job openings for certified nursing assistants at The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, a career jackpot for a nursing student like Guzman. Peterson is familiar with this success. Pageants are a lifestyle for Peterson, and not just because she has directed the Miss Maui Filipina Scholarship Pageant for the past three years and produced Miss Hawaii Filipinas two of those years. Peterson was coached herself as she participated in pageants from the first grade up to when she bore her first child. And like Guzman, Peterson flew from her tiny island into the big world of college and career climbing. But Peterson was wary of women overstepping the rungs of this ladder a little too eagerly. Peterson has observed in her experience that young women tended to support

S

tarting your day with Christina Sarasola is a blast. She’s the Cuban woman behind the Alba’s Cuban Coladas Coffee Food Truck, and she has tons of energy. Amazingly, she says it’s not just because she drinks the espresso. “I was born and raised in Miami; both of my parents are Cuban,” says Sarasota “I grew up drinking Cuban coffee. My parents would put it in my bottle. It is the silliest thing Cubans do. My mother says her mother did it, so that is what she did. Now I am officially wired!” Cuban coffee is an experience. It’s not an ordinary coffee. “I can’t find Cuban coffee beans here on Maui,” says Sarasota. “I have to ship them in from Miami. The beans are grown in South America–they used to be grown in Cuba, but not anymore. Anyway, the Cubans roast their coffee at a much higher temperature than most coffee beans to extract even more of the oils. It’s very concentrated. And the way Cubans prepare it is we sweeten it. It’s not like a bomb of sugar. It’s almost like the beans are so dried out it absorbs the sugar for a nice smooth finish. It’s sweet and smooth with no crazy bitter bite like a lot of other espresso has.” In Miami, Sarasola says the coffee culture is a bit different. “The name ‘Coloda,’ it comes from the word meaning to brew,” says Sarasota. “I serve it in this four-ounce cup with a stack of little shot glasses–the way they do it in Miami. There is always one employee that comes in with the Colada shots and you start the day in the office, kitchen or wherever, and everyone takes their shot of coffee. Then you do it again for lunch time, and then again at three.” Just don’t expect her to subtract the sugar out of the equation. It’s an integral part of Cuban coffee. “Serve this coffee with no sugar? I always say no,” she says. “We don’t serve it that way. We have a lot of people that come and they want black coffee. I have to say, first of all it’s not American coffee, it’s espresso. Second, it’s sweetened. We sweeten it. Most people are like, ‘okay, we will try it.’ And they love it! It’s a totally different style of drinking coffee. and because of the fact that it is so strong

you don’t serve it in large portions.” That’s true–her largest coffee here is served in a tiny cup, by usual standards. Forget the 16-ounce drink, that is not what this is about. Strong and concentrated, creamy and delicious, you won’t miss the larger size. “My best seller is the Cortadito,” says Sarasola. “It’s two shots of the sweetened Cuban espresso topped off with a little bit steamed evaporated milk. It’s nice and creamy and this small cup here is like having a large cup of coffee.” Alba is a family name, and her inspiration. “My company name, Alba’s, comes from my grandmother,” says Sarasola. “I was the first girl grandchild and she couldn’t wait to spoil me. She was an excellent cook. She passed away from Alzheimer’s but before she lost her memory, she bestowed her recipes to me. At the time I couldn’t even cook toast–I burned toast. So we sat down together I got all her recipes down. A month later, she couldn’t cook anymore. I did it just in time. Now I’m using her recipes! It’s all in honor to her.” On Tuesdays she prepares empanadas. She makes chicken, beef or guava. Sometimes all three, but the day I visited she made beef. “Today we have seasoned ground beef empanadas,” she says. “It’s ground beef called a Cuban sofrito. It’s a base of onions, garlic and peppers, and a little tomato sauce. It has a lot of herbs and spices. Cuban food is not spicy but it has a lot of spices and ingredients, like I use oregano, parsley, cumin and paprika. Bold flavor, slowly simmered together, and I add some peas. The dough is a basic flour dough and then I fry them. I feel like when you bake them it dries out the meat inside. Frying them keeps it nice and juicy.” While I was there picking up my coffee, she sold her last empanada. It was before 10am, and people were lining up early to get them. She also makes arroz con pollo, and a few other Cuban dishes. Find Alba’s Cuban Coladas at the Kahului Small Boat Harbor on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8am until they sell out. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Knives Up! SOUS CHEFS LAWRENCE MASON AND ERIC PURRUGANAN BATTLED IT OUT IN LAST WEEKEND’S COW PIG BUN #KNIFEFIGHT

Eric Purruganan and Lawrence Mason

C

ow Pig Bun in Kihei is back with its industry competition Knife Fight, but they’re changing it up a bit. This next installment has sous chefs vying for a championship title that will be handed out later this year. The most recent competition went down last Sunday, June 19. It pitched Hana Ranch Provisions’ Lawrence Mason against Oceanside Restaurant’s Eric Purruganan. The guest judges were State Representative Kaniela Ing, D–Kihei, Monkeypod’s Jason Vendrell and Michael Bucciantini with Maui Wave Riders. The chefs had one hour to prepare three dishes. Their main ingredient was oyster, and the “surprise ingredient” was opakapaka. Knife Fight is one of those rare opportunities to see the kind of trash-talking that goes on between chefs, but it’s all in good fun. The antics were hilarious at times, and Purruganan really hammed it up–even tasting one of Mason’s dishes at one point and giving comments (he also showed us why he wears a rubber glove on the back of his cap). Mason’s mild manners were squared off against Purruganan’s wilder demeanor. Mason took a while to get his first dish–house-made bread with mixed greens and a cured opelu spread with fried opakapaka, while Purruganan’s raw oysters in the shell with opakapaka tartar and Suriname cherra granita was up first. Purruganan’s second dish, a Maliko Heirloom tomato gazpacho with prawns and oyster was a favorite of Ing, while Bucciantini favored Mason’s open-face sando. Vendrell was still savoring the oyster and opakapaka crudo

from round one. “With elevated ingredients and complicated cooking techniques, sometimes a raw dish is the best thing to let the ingredients really make their impact,” said Vendrell. The last bit of the competition got hazy, and rightly so, since Cow Pig Bun is a bourbon bar. If you don’t have a cocktail in your hand, it’s your loss (they were also serving succulent pork tacos until the wee hours). With Purruganan yelling for more oysters in the final 10 minutes to prepare his absinth chowder while Mason served his fifth and sixth over-the-top dishes, things got crazy. It was a close competition as points go, but ultimately two of the judges scored Purruganan higher, and he won this round of Knife Fight. “My style is letting the food come through on its own,” says Purruganan. “I cook from the heart with what is fresh.” Purruganan is originally from Alaska, where he fished for his own share of crab, and he’s been in and out of kitchens his whole life. Trained in Portland, he also worked at Merriman’s on Kauai before bringing his knives to Maui. Tie on your apron strings because the next competition takes place on July 19. There will be a total of eight sous chefs vying for the championship title. Stay tuned for a special edition Knife Fight where Cow Pig Bun will call back last year’s winning chefs for a special competition. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

SETH GRABEL TELLS HOW HE GOT HIS MAGIC ON MAUI

Seth Grabel

I

’m not afraid to admit it: I believe in magic. That’s why I couldn’t wait to see Seth Grabel’s Magic on Maui, the newest magical experience to hit our shores. It’s a high-energy show at the Maui Theatre in Lahaina. Grabel mixes acrobatics, magic and plenty of audience engagement. We were blown away by tricks, and in stitches over some of the audience antics. Turns out that Grabel grew up magically inclined under his dad, magician Gary Grabel.

14 JUNE 23, 2016

“My dad has been a magician my whole life,” he said. “I always watched him doing magic growing up. But you know, it was his thing, not my thing. When I was five years old, he got me a magic kit and I was enthralled by doing that magic. I had lots of fun. But then I got discouraged and I went away from it for a while. But during college, I got back into it.” Grabel says he has a strong attachment to magic. “I can’t not practice magic,” he said. “I have tried. I got discouraged at one point and

stopped doing magic. But it just came back to me. It’s in my blood. What magic is to me is an outlet to make people smile. I get to brighten someone’s day, I get to have a good time and you never know where magic will lead you.” I asked my 10-year-old, who’s a big fan of magic, what she liked best at Grabel’s show. “Magic is just so mysterious,” she said. “It gets your brain thinking. After the show, all I could think about was how does he do those things?” There’s a lot of audience participation in Grabel’s illusions, and my daughter got to play a part in one of his card tricks. It stupefied her for days. But that’s the fun in the show. Gravel was born and raised in Los Angeles but lives in Vegas now, where he’s been for the past 20 years. He gained quite a bit of fame from his appearances on the sixth season of America’s Got Talent. “America’s Got Talent is a huge platform,” Grabel said. “It was a wonderful experience. It taught me how to be diligent and strive for success.” Magic is his lifestyle, but Grabel admitted that his college education still comes in handy. “I studied hotel management with a minor in marketing,” he says. “Marketing is 90 percent of the business of entertainment. A lot of entertainers don’t under-

stand that. But marketing is a big push, and if you don’t market, you don’t get there. “ Grabel has yet to master the art of living on Maui time. In fact, he hasn’t taken a day off yet. “I have been on Maui for nine days,” he told me. “I wish I could say I’ve had time to explore, but I have literally been so busy with the show! Tomorrow is the first day I’m going to go relax, go have a leisurely lunch and relax at the beach. I really want to go to a bamboo forest. I have a bamboo trick I’m working on in my hotel room.” Adding the Hawaii element to his show has kept him busy. “We added a few different illusions that are Hawaiian based,” Grabel said. “We created the show just for Hawaii, and it’s really difficult to create custom made illusions. We added a few subtle things to the show. Everything from the tiki to the seashells.” You can catch Seth Grabel’s magic shows on Saturdays and Sundays at the Maui Theatre, but only through July 10. Go to MauiTheatre.com for more information and to reserve tickets. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E news, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

Fish Out Of Water Pixar’s ‘Finding Dory’ is beautiful but not a lot of fun ★★★★★ Rated PG / 103 Min.

I

know a couple in Illinois who used Finding Nemo as a tool to deceive their child. The couple, who I’ll refer to as Mom and Dad, would use it one night as bait on their very young son. The little boy would be getting fussy and refuse bedtime until he got to watch a movie first. Mom and Dad would start Finding Nemo, letting it play for about 15 minutes. Then, Mom would distract her son, while Dad quickly hit the remote and jumped to the last 10 minutes of the movie. They’d both say, “Hooray, they found Nemo! The movie is over!” Their poor kid would be too tired to realize he’d been grifted by his parents, who used a Pixar movie to manipulate their child. That anecdote came to mind while watching the long-awaited sequel, which feels every bit as rushed and forced as the mini-version of Finding Nemo I watched with a mystified little boy in Illinois. This time, it’s the lovable but forgetful

Dory (voiced wonderfully by Ellen DeGeneres) who goes on an ocean-wide search for her parents. Nemo and his father follow along, while Dory meets a new cast of characters residing in a massive ocean center. Somehow, a whale, an octopus and Sigourney Weaver figure into the story. Throughout the movie, I searched for subtext and deeper meaning. Surely this couldn’t just be a movie about talking fish, right? Finally, something with purpose reveals itself. Through flashbacks, we see Dory’s parents (nicely voiced by Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy) as they patiently and lovingly raise their daughter, who can’t remember anything. It’s a tribute to parents raising special needs children and an example of parenting done right. We eventually see what Dory’s parents have been up to in her absence and it’s a visual that moved me. Otherwise, I felt disconnected from Finding Dory. There are fine moments and funny new side characters but, as a sequel, it falls oceans short of the original. This isn’t a cynical cash-in, like Cars 2, but it’s nowhere near as funny as Mon-

Seriously, who drinks coffee right out of the pot?

sters University or as touching as Toy Story 3. The original had two Pixar milestones: the hysterically funny scenes in a dentist’s office and a thrilling sky chase involving a flock of seagulls. Nothing here comes close to that level of brilliance. Dory is adorable but, when you really think about it, not a character to base an entire movie around. Her plight is very sad and so is much of her journey. Her memory loss can be paralyzing and– especially if she’s alone for a lengthy period of time. This leads to some distressing and tremendously downbeat scenes, particularly the wrenching moment where we see how she got lost in the first place. But I liked the odd, silent bird who helps in finding Dory. Also funny are the territorial sea lions, one of which is voiced

by Idris Elba (whose ubiquitous presence in movies I welcome). Yet, no one comes close to the comic invention of Willem Dafoe’s Gill from the original. Nemo feels like a secondary and not entirely important figure this time out. The animation is magnificent but it’s in the service of a tale that needed more work. Considering just how hilarious and exhilarating Finding Nemo was, I expected an emotional workout to match the richness of the visual beauty. Truthfully, Pixar’s recent, underappreciated (and, due to its poor box office, their black sheep) The Good Dinosaur soared at blending big laughs and heartbreaking storytelling. Maybe it’s time to give Nemo and Dory a rest but how about another round of Arlo the Dinosaur? ■

Horoscope

Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Didn’t think you could overdose on intimacy did you? You believe in your own stamina, your ability to engage in–relish, even–emotional process for days on end. But how many heart-to-hearts can even your robust organ take before it’s pulped into jelly? This week you may find out, but I hope you’re wise enough to take a break before it comes to that. Don’t let things get to the snapping point, in an effort to prove yourself a superhumanly compassionate listener. Take some space before you get bitchy. You have limits, whether you like it or not. Respect them. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Don’t take anyone for granted this week. While most of your usual gang is lining up their vocal support for whatever you have in mind, your strongest and most important ally may have serious reservations. These could come up at an awkward time if you simply assume all along that they’ve got your back. You’ll want to heed whatever your best bud has to say, and it’ll be awkward for them to speak their mind in front of a mob of your rabid fans. Make sure you know the opinions of those you want to count on, before you need to count on them.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You need to dig a little deeper. That is, if you want to keep that special someone in your life, you’ve got to come up with and offer just that little bit more than you have so far. Otherwise s/he’s going to walk, and sooner rather than later. People need change, growth, expansion, development. And even though you’ve provided all those things, sometimes they need even more of them, faster. That’s just one of the compromises of being in a relationship. In other words, if you’ve got more to offer, put it out there, swiftly. If you don’t, get ready to say goodbye. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

YOGA & MOVEMENT STUDIO

You can’t bake a cake in half the time by doubling the temperature. Try not to let your impatience get the best of you this week. It could be frustrating while you wait for certain necessary processes to play themselves out. Same reason the cake can’t rise into its sweet fluffy glory except in its own sweet fluffy time. Don’t turn up the heat, despite your current hotheadedness. You’ll just burn the cake and mess everything up. Patience, darling; your dessert is coming. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Why does the phrase “just friends” even exist, anyway? It’s a lame break-up, especially considering that the vast majority of romantic relationships don’t seem to be especially good friendships; without sex to provide some kind of glue, they tend to fall apart. A good friendship is infinitely more complex, interesting, rewarding, and solid than most supposedly “intimate” connections. It’s alright for mutual physical pleasure to provide some of the bond between two people, but eventually, unless some more enduring, deep, non-physical connection is cultivated, the relationship will fall apart. This week, develop what goes on between you and your partner out of bed, so that it’s at least as strong as what happens in it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

I’m often hard on Libras, I admit. I use that classic excuse to beat someone up: it’s because you can take it, and I’m trying to get you to fulfill your potential. Libras have it so easy; you need to be pushed to develop yourselves. You’re generally reasonably smart, attractive, creative, and likeable. It’s awfully simple to glide by on those fine traits and just sort of be normal, nice–and, ultimately, mediocre. You’re certainly welcome to do that. But I say if you can step it up and be better than pretty good–and you can–you should. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Your astrological neighbors, those Libras, sometimes require ass-kicking to explore unrealized potential. Not so you. Your predilection towards extremes of all kinds is a near-compulsion to leave no stone unturned. As you’ve already discovered, many times, that can be dangerous. I won’t discourage you from this intrepid exploration, however, despite its hazards; it’s necessary, important, and admirable. But please consider the timing. What you do and where you go impacts other people besides yourself. You don’t necessarily owe it to them to wait until the time is right for everyone–but that kind of patience makes an awfully nice gift. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

It’s a week of reruns. You already know how all these stories are going to turn out, and no matter which channel you switch to you’re doomed to experience something worse than déjà vu. It may be tempting to inject some new elements into these situations, just to screw them up. You certainly could, if you chose to. But I wouldn’t, if I were you; any deviation from the course this week means a more negative, less satisfying outcome, and ultimately a more frustrating week than you were in for before. So you have to watch a few repeat episodes of shows you never particularly liked. So what? Relax. There’ll be enough chaos and uncertainty in the next couple of weeks to more than make up for their absence in this one.

Extreme forces confuse and paralyze you when they’d polarize almost everyone else, and spur them to action. They’re just not your forte. However, during weeks like this one, rife with messy, subtle, conflicting influences that would bewilder most of the more straightforward signs, you thrive. An intricate maze full of subtle, almost indiscernibly different choices is ideal for you. Luckily that’s just what this week provides. Wind your way through it, and if you encounter any bewildered fire signs along the way, let them tag along, would you? ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You’re lucky you’re not susceptible to the same confusing forces acting on your astrological neighbors, those Pisces, because they’d mess you up. Fortunately for you, everything this week is exactly how you like it; more or less straightforward, clear-cut, and unambivalent. Or so it might seem. It’s not that deceptions abound at the moment. No one’s got balls enough to out-and-out lie to your face. But should you come to the wrong conclusion on your own, no one’s likely to set you straight, either. In other words, before you make what seems like an obvious decision, check your facts. They might be false. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Some people will pack up their whole lives and move on a whim. They’re not Bulls. As much as you can appreciate someone’s desire to live by the ocean, you’d never quit your job and schlep your shit somewhere for that reason alone. You need a lengthy rationale before you consider drastic changes, and lots of time to weigh all the factors of your decision. Sometimes, however, you don’t have time to figure out all the details before you take the plunge. There are opportunities that vanish overnight, and people who simply don’t have that much patience. This week, if pressed into a decision you’re not ready for, don’t balk; this choice will be made, one way or another. It’s up to you: Trust your gut and leap, or dig in your heels and let this one happen by default.

CLASSIC ROCK

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Twice now I’ve dreamt about Gemini friends conducting very unusual, uncharacteristic searches. In one, a tall, hairy, and very straight Gem friend was on the hunt for a pair of glamorous high-heeled shoes that’d fit his massive, crooked-toed feet. In the other, a friend of mine who already has two more kids than she’d ever planned on, restlessly sought babies– both animal and human–to kidnap and make her own. Are you, hunting something that isn’t exactly appropriate? I suspect so, and I wish you’d stop chasing wild geese, especially since some tame, golden-egg laying ones are hanging out right nearby, just waiting for you to notice them.
