Daniel M. Gluck

The civil liberties good guys scored a rare win in the government appointments game last week. The five-member Hawaii State Ethics Commission has selected Daniel M. Gluck, the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s (ACLU) Hawaii office, to be its new executive director, the commission announced on July 1. “I will work to ensure our state’s lawmakers, employees, and lobbyists adhere to the highest ethical standards,” Gluck said in the Ethics Commission’s July 1 news release. “Furthermore, I am accustomed to working with different sets of stakeholders and will continue to conduct my work professionally and respectfully towards all parties involved.” Gluck is taking over for Les Kondo, who was appointed state Auditor back in April. The commission’s decision to choose Gluck was also unanimous, according to the news release. He’s worked for the ACLU’s Hawaii office since 2007. While there, he “investigated and litigated many civil rights cases, specializing in constitutional law and federal/ state anti-discrimination statutes,” according to the Ethics Commission news release. If that seems a bit bland, here’s a bit more of Gluck’s resume from the University of Hawaii William S. Richardson School of Law, where he’s an adjunct professor who teaches civil rights seminars: “Since joining the ACLU in 2007, Gluck has litigated cases involving the rights of homeless students; gender discrimination in public schools (Title IX); privacy rights of teachers in Hawaii’s public schools; discrimination against gay and lesbian couples; the application of the Fourth and Fifth Amend-

which is not made to handle heavy traffic. I urge our state delegates, governor and lieutenant governor to do another Environmental Impact Study that looks at every alternative to creating another West Maui route. These events that cut off Lahaina from the rest of the island are happening all too often and we need to look for other solutions. In the meantime I would like to put out a big mahalo to our fire fighters, police officers, Red Cross workers and others who worked tirelessly to keep us all safe, thank you for all that you do.” Seriously, this is the thing. The Pali is a natural choke-point, putting a substantial portion of the island’s population at risk of being cut off if the Pali’s closed for whatever reason. It’s long been a fact of life around here that much of Maui’s workforce lives in Central Maui but works on

California. Known as RIMPAC, it’s the largest naval exercise in the world, and runs for about six weeks during every even-numbered year (it’s also when the aliens struck in the 2012 movie Battleship!). The exercises will include the live-firing of various anti-ship missiles, as well as the sinking of two retired vessels. Long controversial for the damage that all that active sonar inflicts on marine mammals, this year’s exercises are supposed to be quieter, under the terms of a settlement agreed on back in September 2015 between the U.S. Navy, which hosts the exercises, and a group of environmental organizations including Earthjustice and the Natural Resources Defense Council. “We challenged the Navy’s plan because it would have unnecessarily harmed whales,

ment in immigration court; and various prisoners’ rights issues,” states the law school’s official biography of Gluck. “He has also worked on a variety of First Amendment issues involving the right to protest, the right to videotape law enforcement, and protection of journalists under Hawaii’s ‘media shield’ law.” In other words, Gluck is exactly the kind of guy we want making sure Hawaii lawmakers are above board. We do have one small request though: sometime soon, maybe actually explain the Ethics Commission’s duties on its web page that’s labeled “Duties.” Right now, that page is blank, which is a bit disconcerting, especially given the gravity of the commission’s responsibilities.

WILL THE PALI BRUSH FIRE LEAD TO A NEW ROAD? So that was some fire we had on the Pali this weekend. The cause remains under investigation, though fire officials have mentioned a downed power line was apparently involved. The threat of a wildfire on the Pali in the summer–when it’s covered with plenty of brown brush–is always a threat, but Saturday’s ferocious winds whipped it into a conflagration that has so far consumed nearly 5,000 acres. Leave it to Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa–who was briefly delayed on the Westside during the fire and had to return to Wailuku via Kahakuloa–to cut to the chase: “Last night’s brushfire was a perfect example of why we need an alternate route to and from West Maui,” Arakawa said in a July 3 statement. “Our residents and visitors can be cut off at any time due to a brushfire, rockslide or even a bad traffic accident, as they were yesterday. Even I was stuck in Lahaina last night and was forced to take the back road out,

the Westside, and they need better options than either hunkering in place or slowly making their way through Kahakuloa (which is usually closed off too during emergencies anyway). Where would this new road go? Who knows, but it’s past due that we start seeing some options.

EARTHJUSTICE AGAIN CALLS FOR END TO RIMPAC EXERCISES So about 50 vessels representing 45 nations (including ours!) are right now playing war in the waters around Hawaii and southern

dolphins, and endangered marine mammals, with the Navy itself estimating that more than 2,000 animals would be killed or permanently injured,” Earthjustice David Henkin said in a Sept. 14, 2015 statement by that organization. “By agreeing to this settlement, the Navy acknowledges that it doesn’t need to train in every square inch of the ocean and that it can take reasonable steps to reduce the deadly toll of its activities.” Though that settlement is great, Earthjustice still wants the exercises to end entirely. “The Navy itself estimates that training off the coasts of Hawai‘i and Southern California could result in the deaths of as many as 155 marine mammals and the permanent injury of more than 2,000 more [sic] over a five-year period,” states an Earthjustice news release sent out on June 30 of this year. “The Navy should cease these activities in sensitive marine mammal habitat. Sonar and explosions from these activities can seriously impair the hearing of whales, dolphins and other mammals, threatening their ability to survive. Reasonable steps can be taken to reduce the deadly toll of these impacts.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro

BIDS WANTED FOR NEW FARM TO SCHOOL INITIATIVE The Farm to School Initiative, spearheaded by Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui, is looking for qualified local farmers and vendors to submit bids to bring local fresh fruit and vegetables to schools statewide. The program is an effort to best utilize the supply and demand surrounding the purchasing of local food for school cafeterias. In addition, the initiative aims to systematically increase state purchasing of local food for school menus as well as connect our keiki with their food through the use of products from the local agricultural community. Qualified farmers and vendors are asked to submit bids that reflect their ability to deliver fresh fruit and vegetables by July 13. “With Hawaii importing about 85 percent of our food, the Farm to School Initiative is one way we are working towards becoming food sustainable in our state,” said Tsutsui. “While supporting local farmers and our economy, we are also feeding our students with locally-grown fresh fruit and vegetables.” Across the nation, farm to school programs are reconnecting students to a better understanding of the food system and where their food comes from. These farm to school programs–and the new Hawaii initiative–introduce students to healthier eating habits and help them become familiar with new vegetables and fruits that they and their families will then be more willing to incorporate into their own diets. The Hawaii Department of Education and Department of Agriculture are working collaboratively with Lt. Governor Tsutsui on the Initiative; HIDOE has 256 public schools and its School Food Services Branch feeds approximately

The South by Southwest Interactive, Music and Film Conference and Festival is holding a Meet ‘n’ Greet in Maui July 14 with the purpose of attracting Hawaiian creative content professionals to its 31st event to be held in Austin, TX March 10-19, 2017. The meetings in Kahului is scheduled for Thursday, July 14 at 5:30pm at Kupa’s Building Room 104 at the University of Hawaii Maui College. The meeting is co-sponsored by the Music Studies program at UHMC. Australian-based Pacific representative Phil Tripp has made annual treks to the islands building up a homegrown contingent across all three disciplines. Over the past few years, more than 80,000 delegates have come from more than 50 countries and Hawaii sent over 40 in 2016; meeting are also scheduled for Honolulu and Kona, Hawaii. Several artists from Hawaii have showcased at SXSW in the past few years including Anuhea, HAPA, Irie Love, Jake Shimabukuro, John Cruz, Mike Love, Mr. Carmack, One Right Turn, Pimpbot, David Tamaoko and The Green. “Hawaiian artists have featured in the past few years “ Tripp said. “And leading companies have attended as delegates (Occupop, Hawaiian Intl. Film Festival, POW! WOW!, Lux, Wremix, eHawaii.gov, Maui County Film Office, Makaha Studios and WorldSound are among a hundred others). But we want to open SXSW more to the rich variety of talent from the islands–musical and digital and film/TV– hence these meetings including both invited veterans and potential first-timers.” There is no charge to attend the meeting but attendees must RSVP as space is limited. To RSVP, email tripp@sxsw.com or call 512-669-3321. A highly detailed website has just opened at Sxsw.com with new information on

SXSW 2017 events as well as applications for music artist showcases, film screening submissions and topic or speaker proposals in the unique Panel Picker section.

100,000 students and staff each day. “We’ve made it a priority to purchase local produce, however, our options have been limited,” said Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi. “We are hopeful that this initiative will allow for more locally-based products to be used in our schools’ food services while keeping costs reasonable.” Scott Enright, chairperson of the Hawaii Board of Agriculture, encourages local farmers to participate in this program. “One of the challenges farmers face is the uncertainty of supply and demand and this program will help farmers plan and grow their crops with the knowledge that there will be a market for their produce,” Enright said. “In addition, keiki will be able to grow up with an appreciation of locally grown fruits and vegetables.” In April, the Farm to School Initiative gathered information from farmers and ranchers as well as hosted a mixer to inform them on how to become a qualified vendor with the state. Those events, including the IFB, culminates with the Farm to School Initiative Pilot Project, which is expected to begin in 2017.

GETTING FANNIES IN THE SEATS The Bunyadi opened in London in June for a three-month run as the world’s newest nude-dining experience, and now has a reservation waiting list of 40,000 (since it only seats 42). Besides the nakedness, the Bunyadi creates “true liberation” (said its founder) by serving only food “from nature,” cooked over fire (no electricity). Waiters are nude, as well, except for minimal concessions to seated diners addressing standing servers. Tokyo’s Amrita nude eatery, opening in July, is a bit more playful, with best-body male waiters and an optional floor show–and no “overweight” patrons allowed. Both restaurants provide some sort of derriere-cover for sitting, and require diners to check their cellphones at the door.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY Milwaukee’s WITI-TV, in an on-the-scene report from Loretta, Wisconsin (in the state’s northwest backwoods), in May, described the town’s baffling fascination with “Wood Tick Racing,” held annually, provided someone finds enough wood ticks to place in a circle so that townspeople can wager on which one hops out first. The “races” began 37 years ago, and this year “Howard” was declared the winner. (According to the organizers, at the end of the day, all contestants, except Howard, were to be smashed with a mallet.)

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION The Department of Veterans Affairs revealed in May that, between 2007 and last year, nearly 25,000 vets examined for traumatic brain injury at 40 VA facilities were not seen by medical personnel qualified to render the diagnosis–which may account for the result that, according to veterans’ activists, very few of them were ever referred for treatment. (TBI, of course, is the “signature wound” of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.)

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT Basking in its “record high” in venturecapital funding, the Chinese Jiedaibao website put its business model into practice recently: facilitating offers of “jumbo” personal loans (two to five times the normal limit) to female students who submit nude photos. The student agrees that if the loan is not repaid on time (at exorbitant interest rates), the lender can release the photos online. (The business has been heavily criticized, but the company’s headquarters said the privately negotiated contracts are beyond its control.)

AWESOME! For the last 17 months, Stan Larkin, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, has gone about his business (even playing pickup basketball) without a functional heart in his body–carrying around in a backpack the “organ” that pumps his blood. Larkin, 25, was born with a dangerous heart arrhythmia, and was kept alive

for a while with a defibrillator and then by hooking him up to a washing- machine-sized heart pump, leaving him barely mobile–but then came the miraculous SynCardia Freedom Total Artificial Heart, weighing 13 pounds and improving Larkin’s quality of life as he endured the almost-interminable wait for a heart transplant (which he finally received in May). (An average of 22 people a day die awaiting organ transplants in the U.S.)

SAVE THE FROGS! An ordinary green tree frog recently injured in a “lawn-mowing accident” in Australia’s Outback was flown about 600 miles from Mount Isa to the Cairns Frog Hospital. CFH president Deborah Pergolotti spoke despairingly to Australian Broadcasting Corp. News in June about how society under-regards the poor frogs when it comes to rescue and rehab–suggesting that “there’s almost a glass ceiling” between them and the cuter animals.

NEWS YOU CAN USE When they were starting out, the band Guns N’ Roses practiced and “lived” in a storage unit in Los Angeles, according to a book-review essay in the May 2016 Harper’s magazine, and “became resourceful,” wrote the essayist. Wrote bass player Duff McKagan in one of the books reviewed: “You could get dirt-cheap antibiotics–intended for use in aquariums–at pet stores. Turned out tetracycline wasn’t just good for tail rot and gill disease. It also did great with syphilis.”

PERSPECTIVE News updates from Kim Jong Un’s North Korea: In March, a South Korean ecology organization reported that the traditional winter migration of vultures from China was, unusually, skipping over North Korea, headed directly for the South–apparently because of the paucity of animal corpses (according to reports, a major food source for millions of North Koreans). And in June, the Global Nutrition Report (which criticized the U.S. and 13 other countries for alarming obesity rates) praised North Korea for its “progress” in having fewer adults with “body mass index” over 30).

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Damian Shaw, 43, was sentenced in England’s Chester Crown Court in June after an April raid revealed he had established a “sophisticated” cannabis-growing operation (160 plants) in a building about 50 yards from the front door of the Cheshire Police headquarters. And Northern Ireland’s Belfast Telegraph reported in April that a man was hospitalized after throwing bricks at the front windows of a PIPS office (Public Initiative for Prevention of Suicide and Self Harm). As has happened to a few others in News of the Weird’s reporting, he was injured by brickbounceback, off the shatterproof glass. ■

OUR ANNUAL

EH BRAH! SPECIAL ISSUE

OUR READERS COMPLAIN ABOUT THE WILDEST THINGS ILLUSTRATIONS BY

RON PITTS

J

ust about every week for the past dozen years or so, MauiTime has run a column called Eh Brah! It’s simple: readers write to us about some parasite or good-for-nothing who’s harmed them (or some good samaritan who assisted them) and then we run it–with all names and identifying details removed–with a funny cartoon. It’s probably our most popular feature, and rightly so. This year, as in years past, we’ve collected a few extra that just seem a bit wilder than usual. So sit back and enjoy–Maui may be a small island, but people here can get into some big scrapes. As always, please send your anonymous thanks, confessions or accusations–200 words or less, which we reserve the right to edit–to Eh Brah!, c/o MauiTime, 16 S. Market St., Ste 2K, Wailuku, HI 96793 or email them to ehbrah@mauitime.com. Mahalo!

I

was meditating in preparation to teach a Reiki class. My black backpack was in plain view on my massage table. But a few minutes into the meditation, Spirit told me my backpack was gone. I turned around, and that’s when I saw you, a young man, about 100 yards away, moving swiftly toward the new “tent city” in the woods behind Baldwin Beach. I was in my “zone,” so I didn’t chase you. But then I realized that my car was vulnerable, because my spare keys were in my bag. So I cleared out other valuables from the car so you couldn’t steal those, too. But my phone, glasses and all my Reiki materials (including my rose quartz) were in the pack. I asked a couple locals and they told me, “ya, it’s getting BAD brah. These guys are BAD NEWS and bad for Maui!” Then later, I found out that you deleted all my irreplaceable pictures, my contacts (including my precious clients) and tried selling my phone for $20! Fortunately, the guy you tried selling it to had you call his phone, and he knew me. Then you raised the price to $40! Nonetheless, he bought it for me. I’m hoping that powerful crystal and all the Reiki materials help you come into your heart.

E

h, crazy blonde lady visiting to do some kite boarding boarding. You were so loud and entitled since you got here that you have us all kiters begging for duct tape. And when your inexperienced husband was way out there and got in trouble, you decided to yell at a fellow student to go get him as she launched. When, in my humble opinion, I suggested to call 911 instead of sending newbies on a rescue mission, you called me a “murderer” and started ranting to all my people at the beach. Hey, on this side of the planet, people talk, and barking is for dogs.

T

o the entitled scum who felt they could help themselves to the beautiful silver metal Hibiscus trailer hitch cover that I’ve had on the back of my truck for over 10 years: you suck. Though I must say that you must have had to work really hard to remove it. Hopefully, someone else will come along and steal it from you someday. Karma’s a bitch.

E

h, you three boys on dirt bikes, tearing it up on Sunday morning. Have fun, whatevah. But why did you ride through the cemetery of our kupuna? In fact, the second guy gunned it not three feet away from Choy Kee, and the third tore up tire tracks right over the iwi of Tam Yau and a whole family next to them. You ignored me trying to flag you back–probably because you knew you did wrong! Those remains have been resting for nearly 100 years. Ke Akua help you, I’m praying for your safety now. You are just thoughtless boys, but you need to learn respect!

T

o the construction crew that came by, thanks so much for filling our potholes (ok, craters). You were amazing–you had spent all day paving on a nearby job, then came over with what you had leftover and helped fill in the holes on our street. You went above and beyond your jobs, on a Friday, to help us out. Hui Road F can now be taken off the list of the worst roads on Maui. Thanks!

T

E

h, helicopter pilot: why are you flying so low when going over Upcountry? Whatever you’re doing, you’re so low that you’re upsetting our animals. In fact, what are you doing up there? Taking photos? Peeping in windows? Whatever it is, please fly a bit higher in the future–there’s no reason for you to be buzzing us!

o the young man working the snack cart: where is your aloha? I had just stopped by after seeing a doctor, and my throat was really dry. I asked you for a small cup of ice, and you charged me 25 cents. First, where do you buy your paper cups? You can do better than four for $1. Second, where is your gratitude for having such a sweet spot to sell your sandwiches? You have a huge number people walking by to sell to, all day, every day. And yet you couldn’t find the generosity to give a thirsty old lady a paper cup of ice without charging for it? Greedy boy, not so nice!

T

his is for the tall, slender, sun-burned woman who was wearing her hair in a white turban and driving a battered and scratched car in Kahului: You parked your car in a clearly-painted red zone to do business at the dry cleaners. This made it impossible for another guy and me to back our vehicles out of our [legal] parking spaces. We both waited, and waited. We tried to maneuver around your illegally-parked car. No success. Then the other guy finally went inside and told you to move your car. When you finally came out and moved your car I told you that you were the most inconsiderate driver I had encountered all day. That’s because I saw you a few minutes earlier at a different location, driving like a mad-woman through another parking lot. But you just looked at me and asked if I was from the Mainland. Listen Sunshine, where we’re from is irrelevant–in any case, your accent clearly wasn’t local so you’re one to talk. Anyway, as I told you, the curb you were parked in front of is red for a reason. Just because this is Maui, that’s no excuse for you to inconvenience other drivers.

T

o the “polite” drivers of Maui: Stop it! When you drive to an intersection without a light, and then wait for the person turning left who has a stop sign, you’re making it dangerous for other drivers. First, you make the person at the stop sign feel obligated to drive illegally through the stop sign. Second, you make it unsafe for anyone else going through the intersection driving the legal way. We all got licenses from the same people at the DMV and at that point we agreed to certain rules of the road, so stop trying to be polite (which translates into being a condescending butthole on the road who makes it unsafe for other drivers). Start driving the proper way! What you need to do is look up the legal definition of “right of way” and memorize it. You can get a Driver’s Manual at the drugstore. I know this may seem terribly impolite, but I’d rather be rude than dead! I mean, you seriously stop for somebody when they have a stop sign? If you did that during your driver’s test, the tester would say, “pull a U-turn. You fail.”

I

was sitting in my van, parked in Hali‘imaile, reading the Sunday paper when you drove up with your sour faces and began to harass me for being parked where I had permission to be. Since I was quite busy while waiting for evening prayer service at my church, I would suggest that it’s you who needs to get a life and not myself. I will pray for you. Please try aloha, because love works.

emember that lovable, grumpy but good-hearted ogre Shrek? It’s one of my all time favorite Dreamworks movies. Even better, it’ll be performed by the kids in Theatre Theatre Maui’s 2016 Westside Youth Summer Theatre Camp program. The kids have been working hard on their show, and are so excited to present a few sneak peeks this weekend. One will be at the Lahaina Cannery Mall at 2pm following the Keiki Hula Show, and the other is at 3pm at Barnes and Noble across the street. “Our programs seem to pull in kids from different age groups and interests,” says Angie Thompson, Theatre Theatre Maui’s executive director. “For example, some of our kids love technical theater or constructing sets, so we give them an opportunity to learn and experience as much as possible about technical theatre in ways that are suitable for multiple age groups. We also attract kids who love the stage and come to life as soon as their feet touch the boards. With the age range from nine and up, we are also sure to provide activities that are of interest to multiple age groups throughout camp. Our veteran campers also love to take the younger children under their theatrical wings.” The camp’s program director, Kristi Scott, guides Maui’s youth to the next level in their arts and life skills. “Our devoted leader of the summer program, Ms. Kristi Scott, is a jewel,” says Thompson. “She has nearly a lifetime of theatrical experience on and offstage, and she brings that talent and experience with her to our camp. She works with several theater companies and schools throughout Maui County and is well-loved among kids and adults. She works hard every year to provide fun-filled programs not only for summer, but for some of our after-school programs as well. We love her! She carefully vets each member of her creative team for the summer program–members of whom have extensive amounts of experience on and offstage. This year, she completes her team with Vania Jerome as Musical Director, David Negaard as Assistant Director, Felicia Chernicki-Wolf as choreographer and Aida Rose as a camp intern who wears multiple

hats with ease. TTM President Annabehl Sinclair has also been doing set design.” Theatre camp isn’t just for drama nerds. Their keiki reap the benefits of life skills and experience far beyond the stage. “We know theater arts training and experience provides recognized benefits for both youth and adults, which include, but are not limited to, increased levels of selfconfidence, interactive communication skills, memorization ability, and sensory awareness through teamwork and creative and artistic expression,” says Thompson. “As a theater student most of my life, I reaped the benefits of theatrical education by learning to feel comfortable in speaking before a crowd and in learning to work as a team player.” Thompson says it’s also critical for the Westside to have access to this kind of enrichment, so offering it in Lahaina is a must for them. “Providing this education is extremely important in West Maui because West Maui schools have limited access to nearby performance-based theatrical training, as most theatrical programs are confined to Central or South Maui,” she says. “We bridge that gap by providing our after-school programs and our summer program to the youth of West Maui.” Shrek’s story line and appeal won over Scott in the decision to do the show, which offers parts for all ages and for both boys and girls. The show runs later this month, July 14-17. A limited amount of pre-sale tickets are available from Lahaina Music. Also, the box office at the Westin will open one hour before the show for tickets as well. For more information, call 808-661-1168 or go to Ttmwestmaui.org.

Enchantment Under The Sea INSIDE MAPA’S SUMMER MUSICAL PRODUCTION OF ‘THE LITTLE MERMAID’

Ariel & Scuttle

M

y 10-year-old daughter loves theater and singing. Her favorite song right now is “Popular” from the Broadway show Wicked. Sending her to a summer drama program seems like a no-brainer, but it can be daunting, too, because I didn’t want to push her into acting, drama or singing. Lucky for me, the staff at the Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) summer musical theater program has thought of everything for their production of Disney’s Little Mermaid, which opens at Seabury Hall’s ‘A‘ali‘ikuhonua Creative Arts Center on July 15. The show will bring audiences the familiar and beloved story of Ariel, Prince Eric, King Triton and Ursula, as well as the famous songs we all can’t wait to hear, but it’s so much more for the team and students involved. “Our main goal with these kids is twofold,” says Carolyn Wright, Director of Programs at MAPA. “Of course, we want them to build their skills at singing and dancing and acting because the are at a performing arts camp. But almost more important than that is we want the kids experience to develop life skills. I’m hoping that they will walk out this summer more fully equipped to collaborate with other people of all ages, build their ability to communicate verbally and physically. I’m hoping that they learn to trust themselves and their instincts. To have the confidence to step into something that is maybe a little scary, a little out of their comfort zone. If they can do that here, where we hope is a really safe environment, when they get out into the real world they will be more comfortable doing that. That confidence is a key to success in anything we do, whether it be work or school. To step out into the unknown, and do it with a little flair.” That’s why my life this summer has been enriched with show tunes, my own private Little Mermaid dance shows, carpooling and volunteering to make costumes. Highlights for my daughter’s summer certainly include

the social aspects of getting to know so many other youth, older and younger, on stage and off. But there’s even more to it than that. The show’s director, Sally Sefton–an English teacher at Seabury any other time of the year–has some tricks up her sleeve. “We are doing this beautiful play, it’s going to be done with great care, costumes, sets, choreography, everything,” says Sefton. “There is another level to every experience I have with the kids, whether it’s Seabury or here: I want to take them to another level that is not just about razzmatazz and singing. Last year with Oliver, it was an exploration of hunger. We went to the homeless shelter. This year, with The Little Mermaid, it’s going to be ocean awareness. So I really want the kids, besides being under the sea with the songs, to really understand what’s going on under the sea.” As it gets closer to opening night, the kids are getting more and more excited. More than 200 hours of acting, dancing and singing will be under the belts of 71 students aged eight to 18. I can’t wait to see the show. The Little Mermaid team is extensive. Besides Sefton and Wright, there is Musical Director Kirsten Otterson, Choreographer Vanessa Cerrito, Lead Teaching Artist Kathleen Schulz, Teaching Artists Logan Heller and Eva Sikes and Stage Manager Rachel Bega. There’s also Set Designer Todd Van Amburgh, Lighting Designer Ricky Jones, Props Designer Kari Welch and Sound Designer Jason Pfahl.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid ‘A‘ali‘ik‘honua Creative Arts Center, Seabury Hall July 15-17 and 22-24 Fridays at 7pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 7pm, Sundays at 3pm Tickets are $10-18. The Ape Whisperer ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ is everything but fun ★★★★★ Rated PG / 110 Min.

H

ere’s a review of that summer movie where the hunky white guy is the savior of black slaves. No, not Matthew McConaughey in Free State of Jones. The other movie in question, The Legend of Tarzan, works hard to mix the historical and current topic of slavery, colonialism and empathy towards animals into a romantic adventure. It’s also about a man who wears pants but swings shirtless on vines, can converse with every animal in the jungle, wrestles gorillas and aims to save human and animal kind from poachers and slave traders. The problem with The Legend of Tarzan is that this lead-footed, endless dud tries to be too many things and isn’t the one thing it should have been: fun. Alexander Skarsgard’s abdominal muscles register strongly in his portrayal of Tarzan, whose romance with Jane (Margot Robie) and notoriety as a jungle-raised hero put him at odds with a murderous opportunist (Christoph Waltz). There’s also an angry warrior (Djimon Hounsou) and a pissed-off

gorilla who both want Tarzan dead. I wasn’t a fan of the depressing, overlong but fascinating Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes from 1984. Yet, that movie had Christopher Lambert, striking in his starring role debut as Tarzan, and the amazing, Oscarwinning ape make-up and costumes that are still utterly convincing. Here, the CGI jungle creatures are amazingly lifelike and give the best performances. Skarsgard clearly worked out but his physique is stronger than his stiff acting. Robie and Samuel L. Jackson are so distractingly contemporary, I grew annoyed with their lazily anachronistic dialogue. To put it another way, when Jackson sarcastically asks Tarzan if he should lick a gorilla’s nuts (I’m not kidding), it sounds like a line written just for Jackson, who is in full Snakes on a Plane self-parody mode. Robie is a real actress but makes so little an impression here, I wonder why she’d choose such an empty, damsel in distress role. Waltz barely conveys the kind of menace you’d expect from him, which is a surprise, since he’s normally great in anything. Robie and Waltz have a dinner sequence that’s obviously meant to remind us of the similar, tense, cat and mouse

Damn, you have bad breath.

meal shared between Beloq and Marion Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Here, the scene goes on too long, has no tension and gives us two actors not fully engaged by the screenplay. There are a couple of cool little moments, like the sight of buildings being smashed Jumanji-style by a herd of stampeding animals. Yet, there are no sustained or exciting sequences, as every scene is over-edited and cut too short. I was one of the few who enjoyed The Green Hornet but will admit that the character, as well as that of Tarzan and The Lone Ranger, have no place in today’s cinematic landscape. Someone needs to stop a Hollywood movie executive before

they try to bring Charlie Chan back as well. Characters who loomed large in the early 20th century aren’t easy to adapt, let alone make relevant or compelling today. The best recent Tarzan movie is still Disney’s 1999 animated film, which is corny but has riveting action and some catchy songs. The worst is probably the 1981 Tarzan, the Ape Man, which exists to offer the world more glimpses of a naked Bo Derek (hooray for cinema!). The Legend of Tarzan has a few arresting visuals but the screenplay is cluttered and the performances don’t sell it. Honestly, it could have used, for starters, some Phil Collins tunes and gratuitous nudity to make it better. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

A skilled quilter uses whatever they’ve got on hand, and figures out ways to incorporate every interesting shred of material into their final product. Eventually, they patch together something workable–and usually beautiful–out of a pile of seemingly useless scraps. You can work the same magic, socially, if you’re determined enough, and willing. Pick up the tatters of a few threadbare and badly frayed relationships and start mending. It may involve swallowing your pride, and some odd and inspired match-making, but I’m betting that the end result will be something stronger and prettier than anything that came before.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Don’t hold your breath waiting for that pat on the back and you just might get it. Hide whatever doubts you’ve had about any big decisions you’ve made recently. Your dreams are more likely to attract support (and success) when backed by your vigorous and confident approval than when eroded by your qualms. The powers that be are watching you, and as soon as they believe that you’re going to succeed, they’ll make sure that you do so, by offering their validation and support. In other words, as soon as you don’t look like you need their help, you’ll have it, and then some. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

You’ve made your offer. There it sits, on the table, like a massive slab of incredibly rich triple-fudge cake. Now all that’s required is patience, while your prey sniffs the bait. Wait! What the hell are you doing? Why the hell would you even consider sprinkling sugar on top of this already very sweet gesture? Are you crazy, or truly too insecure to see clearly the delicious value and generosity of what you’ve already put on the plate? Please keep yourself from sweetening the deal. It’ll make whoever you’re trying to entice not only suspicious, but downright nauseous.

YOGA & MOVEMENT STUDIO

The other night I dreamt someone chopped off your hand, right in front of me. Instead of the fountains of red blood I expected, your wrist oozed thick globs of butter, as you watched in bemusement. This was not some nocturnal fable about your cholesterol levels, however. It’s more reflective of the sluggish nature of your internal affairs at the moment. I understand your reluctance, but things need to move and flow before you calcify and keel over before your time. Luckily, it’s summertime, and heating things up is easier than usual. Let’s melt that fatty mess out of your veins and get them ready for some red, passion-rich blood–and the chaos and change that comes with it.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

I wish I could just plug you into a wall and charge you up every night, like my cellphone. But sadly, your recharge capability isn’t anywhere near that simple at the moment. You’re too complex to get everything you need in one convenient place. And because getting what you need involves more than two (and probably more than five) people, someone important might end up jealous, or otherwise upset. It’s easy to conceive of the concept that no one can be everything to anyone else, but sometimes it’s hard to accept. I know you’re busy getting the juice you need, but if you have a little time to let that special one know they’re still special, please do.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Pisceans are creatures of faith. Some other signs need to try to make everything make sense, to relentlessly apply logic to the world until it all seems to line up and cooperate. You’re wise enough to know this is all more or less impossible. You accept contradiction, variation, and incomprehensibility so sagely that on those rare occasions that things do fit together with the neatness and perfection of a mathematical equation, you often fail to recognize them–without some help. Well, here’s the hint: This is quite possibly one of those times. Look for the simple, logical answer. It’s there. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

It’s summertime. Your life should be about sunshine and abundance right now, not sickly shades of depressing gray. Nevertheless, I see you getting bogged down in the muck of modern complications and implications, because a few of your recent attempts at good deeds generated some shitty negative fallout, through no fault of your own. I don’t blame you for feeling disheartened, but buck up, scout. It’s true there’s a dark side to every act, if you look for it. But this week, there are at least a couple of elderly who need (and would welcome) your aid in crossing a few busy streets.

Here’s 23 billion bucks. You’ve got one week to spend it, but at the end of the seven days, you can’t keep a single cent, and the stuff you bought will vanish as if the money had never existed. What will you do? Concentrate on creating memories, of course; they’re all you’d retain from this magical week of fabulous wealth. My advice: live that way anyway, incomprehensible affluence or no. In the end, the experiences you have are all that matter. Don’t worry about stuff. The stuff will sort itself out. When you have a choice between doing something and having something, choose experience over acquisition every time. You’ll never regret it.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

You’re in your element at the moment; perversely, that means you blend in so well that it may take a concerted effort to stand out and get noticed. It’s like you’re standing in a lightless room, garbed in black. Although this might be a little scary at first, resist going back to more well-lit scenes where it’s easy to reap dramatic-seeming victories. You’ve been there and done that for far too long. You’ve outgrown the minor leagues; there’s no challenge left there. Welcome to the big time—or at least its foyer. You’re where you belong. The challenge, my dear, is proving it. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

It’s a good week to tie someone up and have your kinky way with them, or allow yourself to be bound and toyed with. There’s something highly erotic about this kind of power sacrifice. Sagittarians attach so much import and desire to the concept of freedom that temporarily taking someone else’s, or giving up your own, carries quite a charge. That kind of electricity could jumpstart a whole new chapter for you. Try it; you’ll see what new horizons become visible once that lightning has struck. I find it deliciously ironic that it may take a pair of handcuffs to reveal that your old idea of freedom is just a faint mocking echo of your new one.

Love is all well and good but can you eat it? Does it put a roof over your head and make sure your telephone doesn’t get cut off? These are incredibly unromantic thoughts, to be sure, but every Taurus has entertained them at least once or twice, and many have made their romantic decisions with at least one eye on financial and practical concerns. However, enough is enough. Sometimes you need to do shit that’s just foolish, because someone you love demands it, or because you demand it of yourself. Screw the rent and the bills. Go be in love, right now–with your family, with a lover, with life. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

How long can you hold your breath? Because at the bottom of this pool is an incredible treasure. However, simply getting to it and bringing even a part of it back to shore will require tremendous determination. As you plunge into the depths, the pressure to turn back and breathe will become more and more intense. Give it your all right off the bat, Gemini. Remember this, if it gives you courage; chances are if you don’t make it on your first try, you’ll never make it–at least not before someone else gets there first. Fill those lungs, right now, and dive. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
