Rep. Gabbard

WHY HAWAII LGBT CAUCUS DOESN’T SUPPORT REP. TULSI GABBARD Back in the summer of 2012, while preparing our political endorsements for that year’s Hawaii Primary Election, we couldn’t figure out what to do in the 2nd District Congressional race. It’s a big district that encompasses all of Hawaii except for Honolulu, and it was an open race with a lot of candidates. One of them, Honolulu Councilmember and Democrat Tulsi Gabbard, looked great on paper but we couldn’t figure out where she stood on same-sex marriage. While she seemed to be in support of it now, we kept finding newspaper and magazine articles dating to 2004, when she first joined the city council, that showed clear, defiant opposition to same-sex marriage. So we went to Twitter, found her handle, and asked her point blank if she supported it. “Yes!” she quickly tweeted back, and we endorsed her. Gabbard went on to with both the Primary and that year’s General Election, and has been the 2nd District Representative ever since. Though mostly known for speaking out on military and foreign policy issues, her 2016 campaign website states that she continues to support same-sex marriage. “The government should not deny those in same-sex relationships the right to marry and enjoy the same benefits, rights, and responsibilities as opposite-sex married couples,” Gabbard says on her campaign website. “Government and political leaders like myself should have no place in determining the most personal aspects of our lives. Government officials should not have the power to declare one relationship ‘morally’ superior to another. As long as the government administers marriages and its benefits, it must remain neutral and

treat all Americans as equal.” Which is why the July 18 news release from the Hawaii Democratic Party’s LGBT Caucus was so surprising. The news release listed their Statements of Support for the 2016 state Primary Election. In the 2nd District race, the caucus issued a statement of “Strong Support” for Democrat Shay Chan Hodges, who’s running against Gabbard in the Primary, but listed no statement whatsoever for Gabbard. “She [Chan Hodges] did a wonderful interview with us,” LGBT Caucus Chairperson Michael Golojuch, Jr. told us by phone on July 22. “Her answers were spot-on, in-depth and detailed. She would be a breath of fresh air in Congress.” Gabbard, according to Golojuch, was more problematic. “Her [questionnaire] responses were short,” he said. And then, he said, there was the 2015 interview she gave for the website Ozy. That story, first posted on Sept. 27, 2015 and titled “Tulsi Gabbard: A Young Star Headed For The Cabinet?” is a detailed but positive profile of Gabbard. The portion that alarmed Golojuch and the LGBT Caucus appeared halfway through, and deals with Gabbard’s views on same-sex marriage–both before she got elected to Congress, and after. “About 10 years ago, Gabbard violated some of the tenets that now make her so popular as a Democrat with an EMILY’s List endorsement to boot–she was neither pro-choice nor pro-gay-marriage, and in fact fell in line with her erstwhile Republican father [Hawaii state Senator Mike Gabbard],” states the article. “After repeated follow-ups, the congresswoman replies with a note about her sponsorship of the Equality Act (adding sexual orientation to categories of prohibited discrimination) and of her support for equal treatment of gay service members’ spouses.” So far, so good, right? Except right after that Ozy drops this bombshell: “Fittingly for her narrative, though,

the explanation for her changed ideology feints us back onto familiar territory–the military,” states the article. “It was, she says, the days in the Middle East that taught her the dangers of a theocratic government ‘imposing its will’ on the people. (She tells me that, no, her personal views haven’t changed, but she doesn’t figure it’s her job to do as the Iraqis did and force her own beliefs on others.)” So after all this time, Gabbard still personally opposes same-sex marriage, but won’t say or do anything politically about it? This puts her campaign statement on same-sex marriage that we cited above in an entirely different light. Golojuch said the LGBT Caucus still planned to interview Gabbard in person, but Gabbard’s staff cancelled that on July 17. “It was just brought to our attention that your chairman and vice chairman have been campaigning for Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s opponent (please see examples below),” Erika Tsuji, Gabbard’s campaign press aide, said in an email to Golojuch (who forwarded it and others to MauiTime). “Therefore, there is obviously no need for any ‘who are we going to endorse?’ interviews. Tulsi has already submitted answers to your written questionnaire.” As for the “examples” she included in her July 17 email were half a dozen links to Facebook posts Golojuch and LGBT Caucus Vice-Chairperson James Mateo had made in support of Chan Hodges. Golojuch insisted both to Tsuji and MauiTime that he and Mateo made those posts as individuals, not as officials for the LGBT Caucus. “It appears that you have spent a lot of time researching James and my on-line postings and I am flattered that you are so interested in us,” Golojuch said in his emailed reply to Tsuji. “But the one thing is that none of those posts were done in our official capacity as Chair or Vice-Chair of the LGBT Caucus.” In any case, Tsuji added in her July 17 email, Gabbard didn’t need the LGBT Caucus’ statement of support anyway. “Considering Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s 100% record on LGBT issues in Congress, and the Human Rights Campaign [HRC] endorsing her re-election, it unfortu-

nately appears that your leadership is out of touch with the majority of those in the LGBT community who appreciate Tulsi’s commitment to issues impacting the LGBT community,” she said in her email to Golojuch. This really burned Golojuch. “Just so you know the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) does not speak for the entire or even a majority of the LGBTQ community, especially after they endorsed Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth’s republican challenger for the US Sentate [sic],” Golojuch added in his email to Tsuji. “The HRC has been out of step with local politics and needs,” Golojuch told MauiTime. He also said he felt insulted that “a straight person” would try to school the Caucus on who they should support. And, he added, the Caucus had “reached out to” Gabbard during the 2013 Legislative Special Session on same-sex marriage, only to be rebuffed. “We were told that Congresswoman Gabbard doesn’t get involved in state politics,” he said, though he noted that Representative Colleen Hanabusa and Senators Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz had sent people to testify in support of the same-sex marriage bill. In response to our phone inquiry for this story, Tsuji emailed a statement. While it doesn't address the LGBT Caucus matter directly, here it is, in full: "Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is extremely proud of her work in Congress fighting for the LGBT community of Hawaii," said Tsuji. "She has been a strong voice on LGBT issues and that is reflected in her voting record, which was scored at 100 percent. She will continue to take a strong stance on LGBT rights and marriage equality in the future. For example, she has co-sponsored the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, co-sponsored the Restore Honor to Service Members Act, co-sponsored the Respect for Marriage Act, co-sponsored the Repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, co-sponsored the Military Spouses Equal Treatment Act, co-sponsored the Safe Schools Improvement Act, co-sponsored the Equality Act, co-sponsored the Healthy Families Act, co-sponsored the Equality for All Resolution, signed the Marriage Equality Amicus Briefs, advocated for LGBT Housing / Privacy Rights and advocated to End Bullying and Harassment in Schools, to name a few. We hope any and all organizations will see Tulsi’s leadership on these issues, but most importantly, that the people of Hawaii know she is working hard on their behalf and will continue to do so in the future.” For Golojuch, the statement was too little, too late. “Co-sponsoring is not leadership,” he told me after reading the statement. “She tells one organization one thing, and another something else. When we needed her, she wasn’t there. We still don’t know what her true position is on LGBT rights.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

The Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) has been selected to receive funding for a Fiscal Year 2016 Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services award. KIRC was one of 21 organizations nationwide to receive the funding. The $49,976 federal grant through the Institute of Museum and Library Services is geared to advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement. The award–with a $50K award ceiling–will fund a KIRC project seeking to advance access to the culture of the Reserve. The project will support the developing Kaho‘olawe “Living Library,” a virtual museum offering a new means of access to Kaho‘olawe. The project will focus on two major activities: the expansion of the KIRC’s digitized pilot project collection of archived Kaho‘olawe materials, as directed by public demand and core program consultants; and the design of an interactive application for mobile use. The app will feature a fully functioning map of Kaho‘olawe that enables the user to virtually explore the Reserve and discover the archived collection. “To the people of Hawaii, especially Native Hawaiians, Kaho‘olawe is a symbol of resilience and an opportunity to rebuild a cultural heritage,” said KIRC Executive Director Mike Naho‘opi‘i in a statement. “As the only major island in the Pacific that has been archaeologically surveyed from coast to coast, with the entire island listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve’s current inventory contains 3,000+ historic sites and featuresencompassing an intact and unique record of Hawaiian history & culture.” The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 librar-

ies and 35,000 museums. Its mission is to inspire libraries and museums to advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement. Its grant making, policy development, and research helps libraries and museums deliver valuable services that make it possible for communities and individuals to thrive. “By creating access to these resources, we further our mission of providing access to Kaho‘olawe,” KIRC spokesperson Kelly McHugh said. “The benefits offered through the history, culture and ecology of Kaho‘olawe are boundless. This is just one way that we can share and enhance those benefits for and with our community.” The Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission was established by the Hawaii

Maui Roadsters’ classic Porsche reproduction is pictured on the cover of the June/July issue of the magazine Conde Nast Traveler. Maui Roadsters, known for their vintage car rentals on Maui, is receiving worldwide attention now that its star car–their classic silver 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster reproduction–is gracing the cover of the world-renowned travel magazine’s summer issue. The cover shot features the car driving Upcountry on a ribbon of highway. The summer issue also features a second shot of the Speedster on the Table of Contents page. Both the cover and inside photos were taken by freelance photographer Adrian Gaut. The issue also listed Maui as one of Conde Nast’s 26 recommended summer destinations. Maui Roadsters is owned and operated

by the husband and wife team of Larry Lutz and Christine Vestfals. “We’re so thrilled and honored to have our Speedster featured so prominently the cover of Conde Nast Traveler, one of the most prestigious travel magazines in the world,” the couple said in a statement. “Maui has so many great driving routes, but when we have a day to ourselves, our favorite drive is Upcountry to Keokea and Ulupalakua where the lush rolling hills, winding roads and the smell of eucalyptus trees transport us to another place. It feels like we’re a world away and the gorgeous views over Makena and across the channel to Molokini, Kaho‘olawe and West Maui remind us how lucky we are to live on this incredible island.” This is the second magazine cover for Maui Roadsters who had their ivory Speedster featured on the September 2014 cover of Destination Weddings & Honeymoons magazine. That photograph was shot by Maui-based Tamiz Photography. Maui Roadsters, based in Kihei, offers a fleet of professional reproductions including the 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster convertible, one of the most iconic cars in automotive history. The two-passenger, manual transmission Speedsters are available for full day or half day rentals by appointment. For more information visit: Mauiroadsters.com or call 808-339-6204. ■

News Of The Weird BLESSINGS, GUARANTEED More and more churches (“hundreds,” according to a June Christianity Today report) offer hesitant parishioners a “moneyback guarantee” if they tithe 10 percent (or more) of their income for 90 days–but then feel that God blesses them insufficiently in return. The South Carolina megachurch NewSpring instituted such a program in the 1990s and claims that, of 7,000 recent pledgers, “fewer than 20” expressed dissatisfaction with the Lord. Advocates cite the Bible’s Book of Malachi, quoting God himself (according to Christianity Today): “Test me in this.” “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse” and “see if I will not pour out so much blessing” that “there will not be room enough to store it.”

The plan for Dr. Ren Xiaoping of Harbin Medical University calls for removing both heads (the deceased donor’s and the live recipient’s), connecting the blood vessels, stabilizing the new neck, and “bath[ing]” spinal-cord nerve endings chemically so they will connect. (Critics say it is impossible to “connect” spinal-cord nerves.) According to a June New York Times dispatch, doctors regularly denounce China’s ethical laxities (though Chinese officials term such denunciations “envy” at China’s achievements).

In explaining the project, linguist Robert Eklund (of Sweden’s Linkoping University) personally sounded out “a pretty wide range of meows to illustrate his points,” wrote a New York magazine interviewer in April. It was Johnson’s third such charge this year, and he initially tried to deny the actual touch, instead claiming that he was underneath the car “simply for the visual.” Johnson acknowledged to the judge that he needs help and that he had been in counseling but had run out of money. IDENTITY CRISIS Talking story with ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ director David Johnston Words by Jen Russo & Photos by Peter Swanzy

I

n Maui Academy of Performing Arts’ new musical Jekyll and Hyde, you’ll get to peer into a world in which people struggle against the pressures of society to be accepted as who they are. Sound familiar? Despite being written by Robert Louis Stevenson in the late 19th century about a doctor who can turn into a

sinister monster, it turns out that Jekyll and Hyde is still very much a contemporary story, though dressed in Victorian clothing. “The story has a relevance to our community now,” director David Johnston told me. “The Jekyll and Hyde piece is metaphor that we get to experience and share and learn from in 2016, from a story writ-

ten in 1886. Just watching the rehearsals, it strikes me so much that sense of hypocrisy we face in our world is reflected in this show. And what that hypocrisy has done to people’s lives and how it has twisted things and prevented people from living that wholeness. I think that ultimately what we’re talking about with Jekyll and Hyde

is this realization: to live in the light, we have to honor the wholeness in ourselves. We have to honor the dark and the light, and find a way to integrate those and find a way for them to live together. And teach each other to find the balance. Society has to find a way to find the balance, and reconcile those opposites.”

decision who she marries, but that wasn’t the case for most women in the late 1800s. Lucy (played by Kathryn Holtkamp) is this oppressed poor person who is selling herself and using that to survive. She sings a heart-wrenching song ‘If only I can find a man like Dr. Jekyll my life would be different.’ She is actually much more like Emma. They are fighting their societal repressions in different ways, too.” The result is a love triangle. And yeah, you should probably forget what you think you know about Jekyll and Hyde. “The show is not a well-known piece,” says Johnston. “If you have read Jekyll and Hyde by Stevenson, it’s not a terribly exciting read. It’s basically about Jekyll and Hyde and the strong relationship he has with his best friend Utterson. It’s all very male-oriented. The beauty of this piece, the screenplay, is that it takes liberties with the original story–there is no love story in the book by Stevenson. This play centers so much around the love triangle between Jekyll/Hyde and Lucy, the Red Rat prostitute girl, and Emma, his fiancé. And that circles back around to that whole point at the beginning that they are all looking for that person who can see who they are totally who loves them totally. No matter who they are. That desire each of us has in ourselves to have somebody, at least one person, who recognizes who we are completely. How important that is for someone to live at their fullest. There is one person that gets me, warts and all. That’s what I am working with.” All of this takes place on sets made up like gigantic, dark cityscapes that move around the show. It’s all a reflection of industrialization and modernization in Victorian times. These are not merely for show. “We have these humongous 18-foot pieces of scenery that loom over all of the action,” says Johnston. “It’s that sense, when you stand next to it at six feet tall, they are three times your size. It’s this presence that is always there. We did that on purpose. It represents that oppressive society that is always surrounding us, always dictating us, and confining us. There’s this feeling on set

I ask Johnston if he ever worries that Maui might not get the themes he’s worked so hard to develop. “No, I don’t think the material is over anybody’s heads,” says Johnston. “It’s helping people understand they want to hear it. They don’t know until they hear it. I believe strongly that we work hard to create a very special experience, if people will step into the arena with us. We talk about what kinds of shows can we do here, or what shouldn’t we do here or what does the audience want. I don’t want to sound presumptuous, but I think what we have to do as artists is tell the truth. That’s our responsibility: to present the truth about issues and we have to believe and have confidence that the audience is smart. The audience will get it–if we do our job as storytellers. Which I believe is ultimately what we are in the theater. We are the keepers of the stories of our society. Our job is to make sure that we come together collectively, communally to share those stories. We have a responsibility in community to share these moments. To learn from them. To grow from them. To open the conversation about these things. It’s a matter of trusting that look, if we do our job really well that people will respond to it. It’s just getting them in the door to share the experience– that’s the hard part.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E articles, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

One of the show’s major themes is line between societal acceptance and repression. That’s perfected in the show’s number “The Facade,” according to Johnston. “Last night at rehearsal, we were working on a number called ‘The Facade,’” says Johnston. “It’s the first big ensemble number of the show. A theme is introduced in that number, and it’s repeated several times throughout the show. I was saying that this is the setup for the entire show and one of the major themes. This, about what society does to people. The imposition of all of society’s rules, regs and mores, and morality on people. Everybody is living the facade instead of living their true lives. This story is about that suppression that was happening in the Victorian time period and for me there are actually a lot of parallels in society right now.” What brings people to a tipping point? The character of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, played brilliantly by Will Kimball, tells the story of man struggling with acceptance and a passion that may not be understood by everyone. “It’s that sense of what happens when that repression just keeps piling on and you begin to fight it,” says Johnston. “That struggle of who you are and that potential of who you could really be, and you’re not allowed to experience that. You get a character like Jekyll and Hyde who wants an answer, who wants to bring all of himself to the table, and to the world, and so he does everything he can to make that happen. We never know what the consequences are going to be when you do that. It can have some unpleasant results.” Of course, the female lead characters in the show are also in the midst of identity crises. “Emma, Jekyll/Hyde’s fiancé [played by Leighanna Locke], is a very progressive woman in a society that doesn’t appreciate that,” says Johnston. “She is a true partner of Jekyll intellectually and in terms of what they can create together on a professional level through science. She is not a person who fulfills the traditional female role in Victorian society. Her father says it’s her

that because they are so huge, that it’s closing in on us, limiting us. Visually, we are trying to reinforce that theme of the facade and what society is dictating about who we have to be in the world.” If all this sounds really dark and even morbid, it’s by design. After all, Johnston admits that he’s known for dark shows. “What I always try to do when I pick a play is think about why is it important for us to be doing this piece, now,” says Johnston. “Does it have a relevance? I hope the choices that we make always do, because I believe so strongly about the power of theater to transform us as individuals, us as a society, us in our community. So that we walk away better people after experiencing this.” But Jekyll and Hyde doesn’t need deep analysis because the lyrics are so good. “One of the fun things about the show is all the layers; it’s really deep,” says Johnston. “The music is really strong, and surpasses the need for all the intellectual examination and speaks right to the heart and soul. You don’t have to think about it. You just have to be open to it to get the message of the piece.” It’s the tradition of theater at his back that Johnston says propels him through Jekyll and Hyde. “The Greeks understood this,” says Johnston. “They presented these incredible tragedies. And it was a cathartic moment for the community because it was a learning process and it transformed their thinking about what they were doing, how they were behaving and who they are as people. I hope we can touch on just a little bit of that in the work we present. That also answers the question of why I always do dark plays. But for me, they are so rich with the possibilities for learning and possibility of transforming. Jekyll and Hyde is so clearly, the imagery and everything about it is about transformation. The first lines in the play are a struggle with good and evil and it’s more than that. John Utterson (played by John Galvan)–Hyde’s best friend–says it’s about the transformation of a man’s soul, and mine. What he’s witnessed has had a reverberation to him as Hyde’s best friend, and out to society. That’s what I love about theater–the possibility for that kind of growth, and sense of change.”

Oritsu Ramen at Lunchtime

ORITSU 70 E. Ka‘ahumanu Ave., Kahului 808-877-0706

O

ritsu at the Maui Mall reminds me a little of the ramen shops in Tokyo that I ate at in my college days. There were excellent bowls of steaming noodles and veggies, a slight language barrier and lots of photos on the menus. All that’s missing at Oritsu is the hustle and bustle of the city and the plastic food replicas that all restaurants in Japan seem to display. This place used to be called Maui Mixed Plate, but in 2013 the owners decided to rebrand as Oritsu, a ramen shop serving Japanese style noodle bowls. With the language difference at Oritsu I can’t tell you for sure how they make their broths, but I can tell you that they offer three styles with your ramen: shoyu, miso and a tan tan sesame broth. Their noodles are made by Sun Noodle in Oahu. While they get mixed reviews on Yelp, I can say that every time I’ve visited the ramen was delicious and the noodles were consistently prepared al dente. My sister loves ramen, and Oritsu is one of her favorite spots. The dining room got an upgrade in the rebranding, and the restaurant changed to a sit-down style. They have a TV on one side of the dining room, as well as a murky fish tank. Their menu has 12 different ramen options. Veggie and kim chee are my favorites, while my daughter likes the wakame. They also have tempura, gomoku, chicken, charsiu and seafood, just

to name a few. The veggie and kim chee version come with a generous serving of vegetables and that’s what I love about them. They also offer combos like ramen with beef or chicken skewers or gau gee. I noticed Oritsu also snuck in some of the plate style options that used to be from Maui Mixed Plate to round things out. There are katsus, bbq chicken, steak, short ribs, curry, fish and shrimp plates, all with two scoop rice and one scoop mac salad. Entrees also include hamburgers, ramen burgers, cold noodle dishes, chow fun, soba, fried rice and dry mein. They also have New York steak teppanyaki and garlic prawns, but I haven’t tried those. Last time I visited, my server told me the oxtail soup was really good so I tried it. It has a hint of Chinese five spice and ginger in its steeped, gamey broth, which comes with shiitake, Chinese black mushroom, bamboo shoots and big tender oxtails. It’s well worth trying. Oritsu also has a lot of small plate side orders you can get: gyoza, skewers, tempura, egg rolls and French fries. The garden salad ($4.50) is a great value because it comes with a big plate of fresh greens, cabbage and tomatoes tossed in Asian dressing. There is also a brown rice and green salad with protein combinations for healthier dinners. Since not all the staff speaks English, use the numbers for the dishes instead of their names on the menu when ordering. The service can be spotty, but the food usually comes out quick. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Tamura's Kitchen in Wailuku PHOTO COURTESY MAUITIME

HOME OF SOME OF THE BEST BENTOS IN TOWN

Happy Opu Time

TAMURA’S 841 Alua St., Wailuku 808-249-2420

H

ave you ever walked into a place and thought it was a new discovery, only to find that they’ve been open for two years? That happened to me recently at the Tamura’s in Wailuku. Tamura’s is well known for their extensive liquor

collection, but in Wailuku they’re more of a market. Tamura’s Kitchen does breakfast, bentos, hot lunch plates and grab and go foods. I walked in looking for a special bottle of alcohol but instead found rows of all kine food stuffs, a big produce section, lots of fresh raw proteins and fish. Yes, they have a small section for wine, liquor and beer, and it’s quality. If you’re looking for an esoteric bottle, go to Kahului–otherwise, they have what you need in Wailuku.

One of the things I noticed right away is that the pricing is really reasonable at the kitchen. They have an old school okazuya style breakfast in hot chafing dishes where you choose your items a la carte. Their ahi patty is ridiculously good–just $2.50 a pop. They grind the tasty ahi poke into patties that they delicately fry. They’re tender, full of flavor and make for a flawless pescatarian breakfast treat with scrambled eggs and rice. They have both brown and white rice, too. The breakfast also features corned beef hash patties for $1.50, as well as classic okazuya proteins like shoyu chicken, fried chicken, shrimp tempura, nishime and mushroom chicken, all ranging from $1-5 per serving. I’m especially psyched on their musubi ume–stout triangles of seasoned, steamed rice bordered with seaweed and adorned with a dark pink salty plum for $1.50. Of course, they also offer spam musubi for the same price. Tamura’s Kitchen makes a mean hot dog, too. They have all the fixings like mustard/mayo, ketchup, chopped pickles, onions and cheese. The best one by far is the steamed bun Redondo’s red dog with everything on it for $1.25, (or with chili for $3). The ahi patty they

do at breakfast can also be made into a sandwich, and they also have hamburgers, cheeseburgers, teri beef, chicken and pork sandwiches for $3.25. The chow fun bento is $4.95 and bomb. It has roast pork, bacon, green onion, bean sprouts, carrot slivers and big fat chow fun noodles. What’s not to like? It’s simple and the serving you get for $4.95 is well worth it. Bento combos like kalbi, which is pre-chopped with bite size pieces of teri chicken, are pre-packed and ready to grab for $8.95. They come with furikake rice, daikon and ginger garnishes. That is all just the food they sell in the morning. When 10am rolls around, the plate lunch crew gets fired up with breaded teriyaki, garlic chicken, chicken katsu and hamburger steak. The kitchen also has a whiteboard menu with several daily specials, new combos, meal deals and the Tamura’s 442 Supper Sando–a grilled roast beef, turkey and pastrami opu pleaser. But get your orders in by 2:45pm cuz it’s all pau by 3pm. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

n the third Star Trek film to feature the original characters embodied by an attractive young cast, the crew of the USS Enterprise is getting restless. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) are trying to find the right moment to tell one another it’s time to move on. Life aboard a starship is becoming too familiar...until the day a lizard-like villain named Krall (Idris Elba) cuts the ship in half and relentlessly terrorizes the crew. If J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek was a sterling depiction of the crew’s first adventure and Star Trek: Into Darkness was an unofficial but blatant remake of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the latest also follows suit. Much of Star Trek Beyond is a remake of Star Trek III: The Search For Spock, as, once again, the Enterprise crashes, the crew is on foot through mountainous terrains and the villain is played by a famous actor covered in heavy layers of latex. The fourth film planned is reportedly about time travel. Great. I guess that

means Pine will direct the fifth entry and it will portray the crew’s search for God. What could possibly go wrong? Thankfully, Elba isn’t covered by what looks like a giant Halloween mask for the entire running time. His character is belatedly fleshed out late in the film but these scenes are worthwhile. Only an actor of Elba’s presence and ability could make Krall as compelling as he is. An odd quality about the first act is how slow it is. There’s a montage showing us how old hat things are becoming for Kirk as Captain of his ship. There’s also a lovely, extended sequence showing us “Yorktown,” a gravity-defying outer space station that resembles the title world of Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium. By taking its time to show us how magnificent this structure is, the film reminded me of the long, much-derided but still gorgeous docking sequence from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The pacing here is old school, which is just right for me but may make summer movie thrill seekers antsy. Those waiting for the big action sequences won’t be disappointed, as two

To infinity and beyond!

scenes in particular are sensational. One is set on a mountain top, as a starship makes a literally terrifying plunge into uncertainty. The other is set to “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys, and features some of the most awesome explosions of the season. The make-up, visual effects and sound editing are exemplary and Oscar-worthy. Of much greater importance is how visibly comfortable the cast is with one another and how warmly the characters are played by the wonderful cast. I’d love to report that the late Anton Yelchin’s final turn as Pavel Chekov is outstanding but the actor isn’t asked to do anything new. Yelchin’s best film work remains his soulful, highly improvised turn in the 2011 romantic drama, Like Crazy. As for the controversial decision to make Sulu (John Cho) gay, its handled in an

unsatisfying, ultimately timid manner. I won’t give it away but there’s a nice moment late in the film where a single photo from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is used. That Trek film is still the best in the entire franchise and using it as a reference point here is a wise, affectionate nod to series creator Gene Roddenberry and his show’s legacy. The title means little (Beyond what, exactly?), unless it’s a nod to the characters considering a career outside of the Starfleet. The movie isn’t beyond or above its origins but entirely content to embrace its classic Trek-kiness. This is why the film will connect best with its fan base but may be too old hat for some. I want the next Trek to really break new ground. Perhaps Kirk and his crew should abduct some humpback whales from the 1980’s? ■

Horoscope

Sign Language LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Instincts aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be. A startled bird, finding itself indoors, will often instinctively launch itself at a window, battering itself senseless or dead against the glass, which is a substance apparently beyond its comprehension. Although I’m a big fan of trusting your gut, there are times when it’s simply not equipped to understand the real situation; it may consequently guide you towards responses that aren’t actually in your best interests. This is one of those rare occasions when your animal self will just mess you up. Think things through, and then think them through again. Then act. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Get your fingers in the dirt. Virgos are way too goaloriented, and while crossing things off of lists and racking up millions of minor accomplishments to feel good about aren’t bad things, they’re just time-fillers, ultimately. The best kind of medicine to keep you happy and healthy is, ironically, something you rarely do: get lost in the moment, doing something that doesn’t really matter to your long- or short-term goals, like gardening. Be warned: losing track of time–a frequent experience of yours–is not the same as getting lost in the moment. Spend some time being active (I would never expect you to actually sit still) but not busy. Notice the distinction, then practice it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Bad ideas can be so deliciously compelling; erotic, even. There are at least 73 fantastic reasons why you shouldn’t act on this one, but I’m guessing you will, anyway. Somehow, that pair of feeble rationales are going to outweigh all the solid wisdom generated by that increasingly ostracized part of you that you once called your better judgment. Well, sometimes mistakes like these can be enjoyable, and, more importantly, can only be learned the hard way. I suspect this one will grant you a little intense fun. But you’ll be wiser afterwards, and that’s never a bad thing. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

You’re sunk ankle-deep in some kind of gripping muck. It’s not life-threatening, but you can’t move without losing your boots forever, and you haven’t been driven quite to that extreme, yet. Nevertheless, I hope that you don’t choose to stand your ground for too long. You are sinking, despite appearances; it’s just imperceptibly slow. In other words, move, already; your situation is definitely not getting any better, nor will it. I believe it’s already too late to escape this mess without some kind of sacrifice; most likely your expensive footwear. However, if you leave now, keeping your pants is still a possibility. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

One of your specialties is tearing down walls, and that includes–in your most altruistic moments–helping others shatter boundaries that hold them back. However, this isn’t always as good as it sounds; for some, freedom is frightening, not liberating. They shrink in the face of it, where they might grow and expand when confronted with an obstacle. Good things can come of challenges and adversity, and our efforts to overcome them. When you encounter other people’s walls this week, think twice (at least) before you go ahead and knock them down. It might be easier for you than it is for them; but that, of course, is exactly my point. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Ernest Vincent Wright wrote his fourth novel without using the letter e. This kind of restriction, in the end, proved too much for the poor fellow; he expired when it got published. But you must respect his resolve in trying to write something good while working within very difficult limits. You, too, need to get used to the shrunken borders of your world. You’ll find, once you do settle in to this re-envisioned territory, your proficiency is undiminished. It is, in truth, extended, to the point where nigh on no one even notices.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Previous generations always had this thing about keeping up appearances, not airing dirty laundry in public. Times are different now; if they’re important enough, all those metaphorical skidmarks in your underwear get exposed, sooner or later. So now the only question becomes: who’s going to reveal your messy past mistakes, and in what context? Hint: Most of those who have something to hide or obfuscate (hello, government) attempt to break breaking stories first, so they have some chance of controlling or steering them. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Happy accidents rock; some of your best work has resulted from them. Of course, their very nature precludes generating them. They always occur when you’re actually aiming for something else. In other words, stop trying to reproduce your past greatness. You’ll strike gold again, I’ve no doubt, but only once you take a different tack and stop looking so hard for it. You’ve got to dramatically change direction–something that’s no problem for you, of course–but also to stop expecting things to happen the same way twice, because nothing could, at the moment, be less likely to occur.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

I know Rams who measure their accomplishments not by how much fun or trouble they got into, but by how many people they managed to drag along with them. Almost nothing excites you more than recruiting partners for your shenanigans. However, for your fiery nature to ripen properly, there are certain journeys that need to be undertaken alone. This is one. That means you’ve got to say goodbye to your stalwart traveling companions. It might even require a bit of tough love to get them to let you go on alone. But there’s no point in even entering if you’re not by yourself–the wisdom within is like a shy forest animal who’d be scared off by more than one pair of boots echoing off the stone. Embrace your friends and go, now, calling, “See you on the other side!” TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

As much as you’d love to go around being a moral superhero this week, exposing hypocrisies wherever you find them, please hesitate laying their shittiness before the vengeful masses. It’s not that these assholes don’t deserve to have to dance naked in front of leering millions–it’s just that this needs to be about more than just their humiliation. You have a chance to do some real good here–as well as deliver the public comeuppances the dickheads deserve–as long as you don’t rush it. Take your time and set up the game carefully. You’ll soon get your chance to enact everything you’re dreaming of now–and then some.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

There it is, darling. The broad expanse of the blank white page, the empty stage, the half-hour of primetime, just waiting for you to fill it with something. This is your worst nightmare; finally having the perfect opportunity to say something but nothing compelling to say–at least nothing that springs to mind. Don’t freak or back out. Instead, just stall. This is simply part one of your little public saga; the sequel comes in two weeks. Set yourself up; by the time the your next bout with the spotlight comes around, you’ll know exactly what you’re doing there. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Silence is your worst enemy these days. We both know your imagination is harsher to you than reality ever is. Not knowing why someone broke up with you, or why you got fired, or even why someone said something shitty to you–these are terrible tortures inside your head, because your mind is only too willing to come up with scenarios and reasons that are invariably crueler than whatever’s actually the case. Of course, getting those life-saving, kinder answers out of those who’d prefer to remain quiet is often virtually impossible. Nevertheless, for your mental health and ours, that is this week’s task.
