REP. TULSI GABBARD NOW BACKS HILLARY CLINTON

MAUITIME ENDORSEMENT ISSUE GRIPES It’s been a week since we laid down the first of our 2016 minefields (otherwise known as an election endorsement issues), and we’ve taken about as much incoming fire as I expected. Whenever you pick a side in a political fight, you’re going to get heat–especially when your criteria for endorsing candidates doesn't follow strict ideological lines. But we thought it might be fun to share some of that criticism with our readers. Here’s one letter we got from former Maui County Planning Director Mike Foley: “Your Council recommendations are very strange,” Foley wrote on Aug. 5. “Don Couch supported developing Olowalu & Makena & the mega mall. Couch & Mike White removed GREAT maps from the Maui Island Plan. Couch is still trying to amend County laws to promote the mega mall. How can you support Couch when he favors EVERY development? Kelly King would be a

baffles me. Jon Woodhouse, who writes entertainment stories for The Maui News, echoed this belief in a Aug. 4 email to me blasting last week’s Coconut Wireless column, which detailed our reporting on Ing. “Did you really have to waste a whole page dissecting Ing’s car troubles,” Woodhouse wrote. “Way to go in contributing to the smear campaign against Ing that seems to be flourishing as the establishment does all they can to get Tegarden to replace him. Who do you think the emails came from?” Of course, I can’t help but wonder if Woodhouse sent the same criticism to his bosses at The Maui News after they approved numerous stories on Ing’s troubles, but I’m getting off track. To be clear, Ing’s troubles began back in February, when he missed a court hearing on his auto insurAugust 4, 2016 ✚ Volume 20 ✚ Issue 08 ✚ FREE

Yeah kids, the Aug. 3 Honolulu Star-Advertiser was true: U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–Hawaii, one of the highest-ranking Democrats to back Bernie Sanders, now says she’ll vote for Hillary Clinton for president. “This morning, the Honolulu StarAdvertiser reported that in an interview with Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, she announced she will be voting for Secretary Hillary Clinton in the upcoming presidential election,” Gabbard campaign spokesperson Erika Tsuji said in a news release sent out on the afternoon of Aug. 3. “I’ve received several inquiries asking for confirmation on this and for the complete statement from that interview.” Here is Gabbard’s official statement on her new endorsement: “I’m proud to have been a part of Bernie Sanders’ historic campaign, and was honored to place his name in nomination at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday,” Gabbard said. “Now, given the remaining choices, I–like Bernie Sanders– will be casting my vote for Hillary Clinton. Moving forward, as a veteran and someone who knows firsthand the cost of war, I will continue to push for an end to counterproductive interventionist wars, and lead our country down a path toward peace.” As late as the Democratic National Convention itself, Gabbard formally nominated Sanders for president. When CNN asked Gabbard in June about her switching her endorsement, Gabbard said the current U.S. military action in Syria was a big sticking point, according to the Star-Advertiser story. “I am not prepared to do that,” she told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, according to the StarAdvertiser. “There are a lot of things that I’m looking at, in particular this issue that she has not moved on at all in this campaign, which is this commitment to continue this interventionist regime change policy in Syria that is proving to be so disastrous.” Maui Democratic activist Shay Chan

Hodges, who is challenging Gabbard in the Aug. 13 Hawaii state Primary, is also a former Sanders supporter, but she endorsed Clinton back on July 12.

MUCH better South Maui representative. “Why no recommendations for the Hana, Lanai & Molokai seats? All Maui voters need to vote for these 3 seats & deserve your recommendations. You should support Shane Sinenci for Hana, Gabe Johnson for Lanai & Keani Fenandez for Molokai. “Napua Greig Nakasone should be the Upcountry Council member, not Yuki Lei Sugimura.... Napua opposed developing Olowalu, & Yuki Lei is very likely to support too much construction. “Kaniela Ing’s vehicle insurance problem started with an anonymous email? Ing has done good work & deserves your support instead of the developers’ candidate, Deidre Tegarden..... At several forums she wouldn’t answer questions about supporting developments & the legislation giving A&B three more years of the public’s water. “Congratulations for supporting Tiare Lawrence & Richard Abbett & Alex Haller & Trinette Furtado.” We appreciate Foley’s previous work for the county, and have relied on his expertise in the past, and while he’s certainly entitled to his opinions, he gets a few things wrong in his comments. First, we endorsed both Couch AND Kelly King in the issue, for a variety of reasons that I don’t want to repeat. Second, we didn’t include recommendations for the Council seats representing Hana, Lanai and Molokai because they’re not on the ballot–they come up in the General Election in November (and we’ll certainly have another endorsement issue around that time which will include those races). Lastly, we did NOT endorse Tegarden in the South Maui Legislative race. In fact, we declined to endorse any of the candidates. Also, the whole thing about Ing’s problems allegedly starting with an “anonymous email” that was politically motivated

ance citation, which prompted a judge to issue a bench warrant against him. Ing also didn’t help matters when The Maui News (Woodhouse’s employer, I must once again point out) reported inconsistencies in Ing’s story about why he got the auto insurance citation in the first place. Yes, the anonymous email sent to the press was most likely politically motivated. But the underlying crime mentioned in the email was most certainly news. Of course, not everyone was so critical. “I was waiting on completing my absentee ballot (great way to get it at home in advance and not worry about polling stations), and am thankful the paper printed its endorsements and why,” said Jeffrey Friedman. You’re welcome, Jeffrey. Now everyone else: get out and vote! ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Support for the trip was also provided by the Hawaii Pacific Parks Association. This is the second year of the program.

HAWAIIAN AIRLINES ADDING INTER-ISLAND PLANES Hawaiian Airlines is adding two Boeing 717 aircraft to its fleet, providing added flexibility for guests flying between the Hawaiian Islands. With the 717s, Hawaiian’s inter-island network of 160 daily flights will be enhanced; in addition, the aircraft will help the company add passenger capacity during peak travel periods such as holidays. The addition also will meet a growing demand for mid-day connections. “Hawaiian already offers the most comprehensive and convenient schedule connecting the islands of our state,” said Peter Ingram, Hawaiian’s chief commercial officer. “These additional aircraft will allow us to enhance these options and better serve the travel needs of kama’aina and visitors for years to come.” The aircraft, which seat 128 passengers in a 2-3 main cabin configuration, will enter Hawaiian’s network after being retrofitted and adorned with Hawaiian’s Pualani livery. The aircraft, which are on a six-year lease, were previously operated by Volotea, a Spanish carrier. Hawaiian Airlines continues the practice of naming its B717s after native birds; the aircraft will be named Koa‘e Kea (white-tailed tropic bird) and ‘Akiapola‘au (a Hawaiian honeycreeper). The new planes, which will bring Hawaiian’s B717 fleet to 20 aircraft, will enter service by early 2017.

mational experience. Girls Court, established in 2004 by Oahu Family Court and overseen by Judge Jennifer Chin, has served as a laboratory court to develop and expand gender-specific programming for adolescent girls in the juvenile justice system. Girls Court–one of the only such programs in the nation–focuses on the differing needs of adolescent female offenders who are often victims of physical or sexual abuse or domestic violence. The Girls Court group, accompanied by female National Park Service and Hawaii Pacific Parks Association staff, spent three days learning about Hawaiian species and ecology, Hawaiian culture and themselves. Many of the girls experienced quiet and solitude for the first time in their lives while camping, viewing the stars from the summit of the volcano and hiking the Pipiwai Trail. The group camped at Hosmer’s Grove on Haleakala, cooking meals together and learning about endangered plants and birds. “We hope to give these girls powerful role models as well as the confidence of knowing they can be successful, even outside of their comfort zones,” said Polly Angelakis, Chief of Interpretation for the park. In addition to the camping and hiking, the group met the park mule team, interacted with community leaders, and learned about Hawaiian culture and mythology from Hawaiian staff. “They were most excited about seeing Jupiter and the stars... hiking four miles, eating s’mores, waking up early to see the sunrise, and weaving lauhala bracelets and rings,” said Girls Court Program Coordinator Dayna Miyaskai. Girls Court works on a strength-based model to develop healthy relationships among the girls and their families, return the girls to school or appropriate educational placement, and introduce the girls to employment education and other opportunities in the community. The program has been a successful one, reducing recidivism

Vistana Signature Experiences, formerly Starwood Vacation Ownership, appointed Angela Nolan its Area Managing Director for Hawaii and Ryan Nobriga General Manager of the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas. “Ryan is an inspiring story of an individual whose passion, drive and perseverance have paved the way for his success,” said Angela Nolan, area managing director, Hawaii, Vistana Signature Experiences. “His proven leadership and commitment to making the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas a home away from home for our owners and guests make him well-suited for this position.” Nobriga joined Starwood Hotels & Resorts in November 1997 as a security officer at The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. Within one year, he was promoted to guest service manager, later taking on the role of beverage manager. In 2002, Nobriga briefly left the hospitality industry and worked for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for six months. He soon realized that his passion was in the hotel business and he returned to The Sheraton Maui. He rose steadily by obtaining leadership positions in Food and Beverage, Front Office and Property Operations, where he was awarded numerous distinctions including

Best in Class associate engagement results and Manager of the Year. In October 2011, Nobriga joined the Westin Ka‘anapali Leadership Team as hotel manager. During his tenure, he has been instrumental in leading the team to industry-setting guest experience index scores and multiple commendations for excellence in sustainability. Nolan, who has been appointed to area managing director, Hawaii, is uniquely positioned to oversee all of the Vistana Signature Experiences properties in the Hawaiian Islands including The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas in Kauai; Maui’s Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas and the Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, which is scheduled to open in 2017. In her new post, Nolan will ensure that the region is maximizing its strategic value to the company. Nolan has served as general manager of the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas since August 2011. In that post, she has overseen all resort operations, strategic planning, Homeowners Association board and owner relations. Under her leadership, the resort has been recognized for its outstanding achievements in sustainability, food & beverage, financial success, associate engagement and for its avid support in the community. She also led the resort to its first AAA Four Diamond distinction, which it has held for six consecutive years. “Angela has been an inspirational leader for the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas and a great role model for her team,” said Thorp Thomas, senior vice president, Vistana Signature Experiences. “Her strong performance, passion for our customers and commitment to the islands made her an obvious choice to lead our Hawaii resort operations.”■

The Transportation Security Administration announced in May that it had collected $765,000 in loose change left behind in airport scanner trays during 2015–an average “haul” for the agency of $2,100 a day (numbers assuming, of course, that TSA personnel turn in all of the money they find). Los Angeles and Miami airports contributed $106,000 of the total.

TAKE YOUR WORD FOR IT Scientists at the University of Cambridge, writing in May in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, claimed to have figured out how to construct a “motor” a “million times” smaller than an ant. (It apparently involves lasers, gold particles and “van der Waals forces,” and the object is to bind the gold particles and then cause them to automatically “snap” apart with, according to author Jeremy Baumberg, “10 to a hundred times more force per unit than any known other machine.”)

GREED IS A HELLUVA DRUG CEO Michael Pearson told a Senate committee in April that he “regret[s]” the business model he instituted in 2015 for Valeant Pharmaceuticals–the one that, for example, allowed a drug (Cuprimine) that treats liver failure and formerly cost a typical user out-of-pocket about $3 a pill (120 per month, $366) to, overnight, cost the user $15 a pill. (The insurance company’s and Medicare’s cost went overnight from about $5,000 per 100 tablets to $26,000.) A Deutsche Bank analysis of the industry tallied Valeant’s all-drug average price spike at more than five times the average of any competitor’s. Pearson told the senators he had no idea that such a pricing strategy would turn out to be so controversial.

NECK AND BACK SUPPORT The Japanese branch of the intimate apparel maker Genie is currently advertising, in Japanese and English, a handy guide for bras that emphasizes the hardship women bear by having to lug around breasts of certain sizes in ill-fitting garments. The Genie chart reveals weight in ounces of typical A-cup chests (11.5 ounces) through F-cup (41.7 ounces, or 2.6 pounds). To assist any innumerate Japanese shoppers, the chart also shows practical comparisons, such as A-cup pairs weighing as much as

“two chipmunks,” C-cups as “one newborn polar bear cub,” and F-cups as “one 3-month-old Persian kitten.”

THE PASSING PARADE Mark Herron, 49, of Sunderland, England, was arrested again in May–his 448th arrest on alcohol-related charges. The year started “well” for Herron, with only 14 collars through March, and he cleaned up briefly before a “family bereavement” sent him spiraling downward again. His current lawyer admitted that his client has been in court more often than he himself has. And Austrian Hans Heiland vowed in June to assist a needy family in Oberholz by donating to a charity fundraiser sponsored by the local fire department. He has been collecting bottle tops through the years and figures he could sell his “treasure” now, as scrap metal, to help the family. He has at least 10,000, no, make that 10 million caps, weighing “several tons.”

WAIT, HOW MANY FELL FOR THIS? In May, the federal government finally shut down a long-running international scam that had sold psychic assurances (prosperity! winning lottery numbers!) to more than a million Americans. In personalized form letters, two French psychics had guaranteed success and riches to clients if they would only buy their $50 books (and massive upselling usually followed). The Justice Department estimated that during the spree, the sellers earned upward of $180 million on at least 56 million pieces of postal mail.

BIG FINE In a June verdict still reverberating through the telemarketing industry, a jury in Utah found that three companies run by Forrest Baker III had illegally made 99 million phone calls to consumers on the Do Not Call Registry and an additional 18 million calls telling people they were merely doing surveys when the purpose was hawking their family-friendly movies. Both charges are violations of the Federal Trade Commission’s Telemarketing Sales Rule. Although the total fine and damages have not been decided, the law provides that the most serious offenders could be assessed $16,000 per phone call (for a maximum of almost $1.9 trillion).

NUMBERS GAME A recent study by a Harvard University data scientist estimated that the government of China funds the creation of at least 488 million bogus social-media posts a year. The report refers to a rumored governmentsponsored arrangement that pays people the equivalent of 8 U.S. cents per post of “news” for the purpose of distracting social-media users and channeling them to subjects preferred by the government (such as successes of the Communist Party). ■

Preventing Extinctions How Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project plans to save our rare birds By Jen Russo

r. Hanna Mounce has a lot riding on her shoulders. As the Coordinator for Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP), she’s in charge of the strategy of how to save Maui’s remaining six forest birds. “I love working in Hawaii because we can really make an on the ground difference for these species one at a time,” says Mounce. “Hawaii species are faced with so many challenges and not nearly the level of support that mainland rare and endangered species get, thus everything we are doing can have an immediate effect. I, of course, put a lot of value on biodiversity and think that any species we lose globally is a trag-

edy that we should be doing more to prevent. Failure for us is extinction and that’s unacceptable and that keeps me going.” Hawaii has the unfortunate distinction of being the bird extinction capital of the world. In fact, Michael Walther, President of Oahu Nature Tours, just published a beautiful book titled Extinct Birds of Hawaii, which catalogues all the birds. The book outlines the different extinctions–pre-European contact and post–and includes descriptions of the birds, notations from the journals of collectors and observers from the late 1700s to 1900s–often, the last people to see these birds alive. “I wanted to let more people know about the catastrophic loss of bird species in the

Hawaiian Islands during the last 1,000 years and to help the few species that remain by hopefully increasing support and funding for them,” says Walther. “I started research for the book in December of 2014 and it was completed one year later, December 2015. The quotes are from old books about Hawaii’s birds written between 1782-1960. The majority of the quotes are from books that were published between 1892-1903. During this time, several English bird collectors were actively seeking rare Hawaiian birds for museum specimens and in many cases their descriptions of the birds in life are all that we really know about these extinct species behavior and songs.”

In the book, each bird is accompanied by a glossy color illustration by researcher Julian P. Hume. “I worked closely with Storrs Olson and Helen James at the Smithsonian Institution on reconstructing the birds in the most accurate, scientific way,” says Hume.” I start by drawing the fossil remains and anatomically putting them together to get the correct shape. Once the color was agreed with Storrs and Helen, I then put them in a background scene and reproduced them in a natural way and often doing behavioral things such as nesting, feeding and having territorial disputes. This was to show that the birds were once alive and doing natural

We want to see more Kiwikiu

I’m camped out in the brush, high in the Waikamoi Reserve, with ornithologists Laura Berthold and Chris Warren of the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, along with volunteers Zach Pezzillo, Stacy Montemayor and Michelle Smith. We’re talking in hushed tones behind 11 nets we’ve set up in the forest. Those I’m with are banding birds, taking RNA and DNA, and recording health and size of specimens–data the MFBRP will use in their research. Everyone has their fingers crossed that we’ll net a Kiwikiu, but as the day progresses it doesn’t seem likely. We have catalogued Amakihi, I‘iwi, Apapane and Alauahio, but no Maui Parrotbill. “I love working for Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project because it’s a little bit of everything,” says Berthold. “We get to do all of the fun outside work like hiking and camping in amazing, beautiful places. We’re also researching birds and learning more about their biology. But what I like the best is planting and restoring habitat. I notice how the landscape is changing and get to watch the plants grow. Planting trees is great for our environment. More trees means better air and water quality, and more habitat not only for the birds but for the plants, insects, spiders and snails. I like knowing that my work is doing something positive for the world.” Later, Warren takes me on a quick hike down to the bottom of the Waikamoi, to follow the calls of the Kiwikiu that he can hear. “That is the sound of the adult calling to the juvenile,” he says. “Look in the direction of the sound with the binoculars.” Warren briefly demonstrates how to sight a bird from its call. I’m holding my breath, peering through binoculars, and it’s all awkward. But using his tips I sense the slightest movement among the branches, and catch a fleeting glimpse of Maui’s rarest bird. It’s just a dark shadow against the cloudy backdrop, but I can tell that it’s the Kiwikiu by its telltale hooked beak. It’s the highlight of the day for me, even though I saw the other rare birds up close. Clearly, I’m rooting for the Maui Parrotbill. Over the last decade at MFBRP, Mounce says their scope of work has changed dramatically.

avian researchers don’t know about what it takes to sustain a healthy population of birds like the Kiwikiu. “We don’t know what their minimal habitat requirements are,” she says. “The leeward area we are working in now has really deep gulches that the ungulates could not get to. And there’s existing native vegetation that the goats couldn’t get to. That’s one of our biggest pushes with the restoration–connect our planting with these areas. We really want to get all these trees connected.” The idea, the dream, is to ring the top of Haleakala with an inhabitable forest for the birds. “We only have 40 to 50 square kilometers of existing forest,” says Mounce. “The forest is the problem. The biggest issue for Hawaii is this avian malaria that the birds are so susceptible to. We cannot create new habitats just anywhere. It has to be out of the reach of mosquitos. And without an answer to mosquito-born diseases, we’re only looking at the top of Haleakala for available habitat. It has to be 4,700 feet or higher. That really puts a big emphasis on restoring all the high elevation forest that we can.” And that takes a great deal of effort. Still, right now, it seems to be the best option for the birds. “We have a vision of creating a native forest lei over the top of Haleakala,” says Mounce. “That would be a ton of habitat and that would be fantastic. The answers aren’t quite as easy as other places that can just set aside a reserve. That is how our project has changed from being a research project and figuring out how many birds are left, to what can we actually do as applied management to increase population and prevent further extinctions. When people ask us what we do–well, we are trying to prevent extinctions.”

things. Some of them were so bizarre that it was difficult to imagine how they may have looked in life. In particular are the Moa nalos, the giant flightless ducks with tooth-like projections on their jaws. I used my imagination based on the numerous visits to Hawaiian forests to recreate them in a natural setting.” Walther’s book talks a lot about extinction, but the final chapter is saved for the extant birds–those few survivors–and what we can do about them. He mentions the work of Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project and other similar groups in Hawaii working to save the remaining birds we have left. “I feel like everyone likes to say Hawaii is the extinction capital of the world,” says Mounce. “It’s not a good label. Our own project has changed over the years. This project started in 1997t. Next year we will be 20 years. We started off as a research organization. Some people hiked up into the rainforest on Maui and figured out there are some rare birds there they didn’t know were there. So then they wanted to figure out what is there and what the state of them is. Nobody was even looking at these bird populations in 1997. Just didn’t know.” Maui’s most critically endangered bird, the Kiwikiu or Maui Parrotbill, was rediscovered in 1967 in a very remote wet rainforest. There are about 500 Kiwikiu left. Then there was the Po‘o-uli–the last bird to go extinct on Maui, which happened in 2004, about two years before Mounce started working with Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. She says that got people aware of the issue, but it was too little too late. “This group of researchers went up into the forest and discovered this bird, the Po‘o-uli, that nobody knew was here,” says Mounce. “Unfortunately by the time they were looking into it, there were 11. Then there were three. But it got people talking about the endangered birds of Maui and putting protections in, like fences and making sure the forest areas were protected, but it didn’t save that species. One really shocking thing for people to learn is that we only have six native forest birds. Three of them are Maui endemic. It’s crazy we have six birds and half of them are only found on this island.”

“A heck of a lot of our work now is building new forest,” she says. “Because we have come to the conclusion that these birds will not survive forever in the forest they have. We’re losing more habitat every year because of climate change. With warmer mountainsides, the mosquito population is moving into higher elevations. Mosquitos make the habitat unsuitable because of avian malaria. At the moment there are no techniques that we can apply to mitigate the mosquitos. Hopefully in the future, we will have some more wide-scale mosquito control. The answer for us is that we need new forest habitat. We found that what was really harming the birds was really severe, really wet forest habitat. They don’t necessarily want to be there but it’s the only habitat left for them.” That habitat is a mere 40-50 square kilometers of remaining high elevation rainforest. MFBRP has been working like crazy to build a new habitat on the leeward slopes of Haleakala on fenced-in state land. “We’ve been planting since 2011, 2012,” says Mounce. “We have Koa trees that are taller than people now. People get to see the real results of having fences and no ungulates. We partner with the State of Hawaii on building fences. We started with a 420-acre fenced area first. Then there is a larger fence, just over 3,000 acres that is complete. We’re still getting out all of the animals but we’re starting to plant on one side of it. Our goals are to switch back from restoration into more hands on bird management, where we’re going to be moving the Kiwikiu from the wet side to the dry side in about a year. And we’re going to see how they do and hopefully get a population established.” She knows the move is risky, but trusts her research. “That is a criticism of this project, too,” Mounce says. “We don’t know if the habitat will be ready. We don’t know how the birds are going to react unless we try. It might end up something like where we have some birds that need to be supported. We might have to have some feeder stations. But that’s okay. That has worked on other parts of the world. The trees will keep getting bigger.” As Mounce explained it, there’s still a lot

menu and working on a happy hour launch. McDowell is known for his farm-to-fork approach and puts that to work right away here. Since there are so many changes in Hali’imaile, they thought they would jump in with some of their own. “Beverly is not scared to go out on a limb and do something,” says Chef McDowell.

t’s a mellow Thursday afternoon and I’m hustling up to Hali‘imaile to check out the area’s big changes. There are people popping into the distillery, visiting the art gallery and working out around me, but I park under the shade of one of their giant Monkeypod trees and cruise across the street to the Hali‘imaile General Store. The lunch hour is just getting started as I chat briefly with Rebecca Schillaci, a manager at Gannon’s that has been with Chef/Owner Beverly Gannon since the beginning. “Hali‘imaile is changing,” Schillaci says. “The Hali‘imaile distillery across the street is doing tours, there is a glassblowing studio and art gallery, a food truck, cross fitness–it’s turning into a village. It’s what we always wanted here. It’s always been our dream that this is someplace cool to come.” As Schillaci heads back to the office and I find a table for lunch, I appreciate this old building that the restaurant has inhabited for 28 years. It has a lot of mana. They recently refreshed the dining room/ kitchen area in the front without changing too much, giving it a sly update. The dining room has a great vibe that always makes me feel like I can really relax into a fabulous meal. After chatting up our neighbors visiting from Missouri and watching the artists from across the street having lunch, we get the lowdown on the specials from our server.

Schillaci tipped me off on some of her recommendations. “I’m so thrilled with the new items on the lunch menu,” she said. “I love the salads. Some of the best ideas for salads are on our menu.” Chef Marc McDowell has been here since January, working with Gannon, and he’s been playing with the lunch menu, dinner

”She just wants to be sure we’ve done our research on it–to be sure we can sustain it. To have a restaurant for more than 25 years in Maui is not easy at all. It’s a feat in and of itself. We have something that has been iconic and keeps on growing.” Growing indeed. The lunchroom fills fast and soon a line forms outside. I like that they’ve expanded and added seats along the patio, where you can sit and order now. “I like to focus on salads,” says McDowell. “I work with a lot of farmers. Bev already has that connection with the farmers, so I don’t have to talk her into that. It’s already our strong suit. And our customers embrace it. Bev has even planted her own farm, which is great for us in the kitchen here. Hands down she has the best lilikoi. And I have lifelong connections with farms here on Maui.” We start with the spicy shrimp lettuce cups and roasted veg farro salad with roasted salmon. McDowell has also fashioned a gorgeous little gem lettuce salad, and mouthwatering baby iceberg shrimp remoulade wedge. But I’m personally attached to the salmon and farro salad–the salmon is such a beautiful cut, with just a bit of smoky tandoori that goes with the roasted veggies so well. The fried chicken sandwich I had for lunch was a highlight, too. Crisp and tender boneless, buttermilk fried chicken in the Komoda bun had me, but the pickled jalapeno slaw stole the show. It’s tangy, crunchy, crispy, soft and sweet all in one bite. My lunch date ordered the fish special and it

Disaster Flick ‘Suicide Squad’ is so bad that our reviewer wishes he walked out O S★ T A★ R S ★N ★ ★

Rated PG-13 / 123 Min.

I

n the DC Comics movie universe, a world where Superman is dead and Batman is on the prowl, a cluster of incarcerated villains has been sent on a mission. The motley crew of super-powered criminals includes Deadshot (Will Smith) and the disturbed Harley Quinn (Margot Robie), whose romance with The Joker (Jared Leto) is her motivation and downfall. Allegedly written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad is yet another summer movie that has been edited by either Edward Scissorhands or Leatherface. The editing on display is so severe, there are no full scenes, just quick bits that hardly count as moments. Few movies this season feel more tinkered with and made into an empty corporate product than this one. All the problems of the Marvel movies are on hand, times 10. When you try to cram 10 characters into the frame, tell all of their origin stories simultaneously and give most of the actors one sentence to utter

in each scene, no one wins. It wants to be Escape From New York and winds up the Battlefield: Earth of comic book movies. The hierarchy of movie stars dooms the ensemble from the start. Smith’s Deadshot is given special attention and there’s even attempts to humanize him with a doting daughter. Smith is a vibrant movie star, even in a film this bad, but neither his character nor his performance deserve a pedestal. On the other hand, Leto’s Joker is barely in the movie and appears to have been pushed out of the story. Writing that previous sentence honestly angers me. Leto just won an Academy Award, is a risk taking, occasionally brilliant actor and a genuine rock star. His first post-Oscar work, as none other than The Joker, should be an event. The actor has a few intriguing bits but he’s barely in this and doesn’t make enough of an impression. Ben Affleck also pops up as Batman, in scenes that could have been played by a stuntman. It’s a lousy way to use an actor whose commanding turn in the previous DC Comics adaptation was the best thing about it. Robie steals the film and offers glimmers of comic inspiration but she’s as short

Why so serious?

changed as everyone else here. The Harley/ Joker romance is a complex, disturbing plot line that deserves lengthy minutes of screen time, not a few tossed off seconds. Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Scott Eastwood and an alarmingly robotic Viola Davis are also in this. They all get blown off the screen by Robie’s short shorts. Once the villains show up, they are almost as hard to understand as they are to root against. Instead of who will win, the lingering question I had was, who cares... about any of this? In the comic books and animated series this is based on, many of these villains are fascinating, if not engrossing figures in great stories. In this movie, they don’t connect. As an action movie, a satire, a dark comedy and a coherent comic book mov-

ie, Suicide Squad is a disaster. My favorite thing about this movie is the opening and closing credits, which are bright and fun. Everything in between is rubbish. Is it as bad as Batman v. Superman–Dawn of Justice? Oh, it’s much worse than that. This is Catwoman bad. I felt like an idiot for not walking out. Speaking of idiotic, there was a widely circulated story last week that a petition was signed by over 5,000 people to shut down the Rotten Tomatoes movie critic site. Why? Because Suicide Squad fans (most of whom had yet to see the movie) were angry that the collected articles were overwhelmingly negative. Now that we’ve all had a chance to see it, let’s be clear-headed about this. There are good comic book movies and then there’s Suicide Squad. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

You have allies; they’re just not always obvious, or as quick to action as you are. In this case, your most important and useful aid-de-camp is someone with whom you often butt heads; in fact, recent conflicts may make them a bit slow or reluctant to come to your aid. But in the end, in this particular instance, you’re both on the same side and they will eventually have your back. I n other words, don’t despair. Choose your spot and hold your ground, with dignity and honor. You won’t have to stand there alone for very long. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Some parts of you are ready to move on, but some aren’t. Perhaps your restless brain urges you forward, with logical arguments why you should; nevertheless, it can’t completely overrule your heart, who lingers reluctantly behind out of sentimentality or unrequited love. Maybe your gut knows, in that way it has, that you need change and advancement, but it’s your nervous mind that’s holding you back, riddled with anxiety, worry, and fear. In any case, because of these internal conflicts, transformation or movement may be slower than you wish, but don’t let it stall out. Make whatever concessions are required to get all the parts of you moving in the same direction, then hit the road. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Your cat hates you. If it was big enough, it would pin you down and eat your liver right out of your living body. Its diminutive size requires it to view you as a food dispenser, radiator, and masseur, instead of as plaything and prey. Any love you perceive coming from it is purely projection; your desperate wish, whose many contradictions you choose to ignore. If you haven’t figured out where I’m going with this, I’ll make it more plain: This week, you’ll be forced to face a few unpleasant truths, whether you like it or not. You can choose to ignore their persistent presentation, if you insist–but that doesn’t make them any less true. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

You’re like a bascule bridge between two major cities; most of the time you’re open to lots of traffic, sexual, mental or physical, but when a large boat–bearing as its cargo some kind of mental process–needs to pass underneath, you raise your span, and it could be months or years before anyone gets across again. This could be unnerving and frustrating for those on either side, who start honking their horns and risking dangerous U-turns. There’s no need for that kind of chaos, though. Please put a stop to it. Hint: Most people don’t mind waiting so much if they know how long their wait will be. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Hey, Stalky McObsessington. In general, you’re so resistant to emotional entanglement that when someone finally snares you in their net, you think you’re entitled to some kind of special treatment. It must be special, it’s fate, you declare, totally different from other people’s more common and frequent infatuations. Maybe it is, maybe not; in any case your love interest doesn’t have to see it that way. Thus the overzealous pursuit on your part. I know it’s hard–perhaps even impossible–but the next time this kind of passion strikes you, by all means go there, but be ready to bank those fires a bit if your potential partner burns less brightly, or more slowly.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Not everyone is against you, even though you’re definitely not the most popular guy or gal around, at the moment. When the politics of the situation are so negative to someone of your views and tendencies, you have to choose, carefully, when to make a stand, and when to lie low and allow the brunt of the negativity to wash over you. This is one of those weeks where you’re best off hunkering down and, to some extent, hiding out. Let the hurricane winds blow over; it’s not that they’d blow you away–you’re too solid for that. But you could end up with a speck in your eye that you can’t get out for weeks.

YOGA & MOVEMENT STUDIO

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Sometimes you just have to take your punches. Resistance is useful, but not likely to be successful. In other words, prepare to fight the good fight but don’t be too traumatized when you get your ass kicked; you’re outnumbered, after all. I’m actually not too worried for you, although you do have my sympathies; the kind of friend who’ll show up when you’re battered, bruised, and feeling sorry for yourself, ready to nurse you back to your strength and health, is the rarest and most special kind–and knowing just who that is, a rare and special kind of knowledge. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Drowning your sorrows would be a very bad idea right now. Booze probably won’t even provide the numbness you crave; in all likelihood, it’ll act like a lens on your troubles, making them seem much bigger than they are. And you certainly won’t be less daunted during a morning hangover. Better to keep a firm grip on your resolve and avoid self-medication. You can actually bring these minor quandaries to satisfactory conclusions if you just bite the bullet and get the necessary bits of unpleasantness over with. And of course, there’ll always be time for a celebratory drink afterwards, when you actually have occasion for it. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Doubt from inside yourself you’re used to. But when it comes from someone who you count on for more or less unconditional support, it stings. It feels like you’re five and Mom and Dad are telling you to give up your dreams because they just don’t think you can do it, and they don’t want you to be disappointed. Parents like that have no excuse; they should know better. But the person who’s let you down might not know that their job is to always be on your side, no matter what–even when it means suppressing (or at least rewording) her own doubts. Clue them in; I don’t think it’s a job they’ll mind doing, once they know that’s what you need. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

A first draft is allowed to be messy. Hell, it can be total shit. No one is ever going to see it, so who cares? You do, apparently, but I wish you wouldn’t. Your perfectionism is striking at the wrong time, demanding that you get everything right the first time around. It almost never works that way, though; what you’re actually doing is narrowing your creative channel so that it’s barely a trickle, and probably about to dry up completely. You’ve got to open the tap and let a flood come through. Later you can distill and filter that stuff until you get exactly the microbrew of delicious creativity you originally desired. Remember, it’s a process you’re aiming for at the moment, not a product.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Try something new. I know you like your tried-andtrue roster of winning combinations, but what you’re perfectly happy with day after day and year after year can bore some of those who wish to share it with you. Go ahead, dip your strawberries in a white chocolate balsamic vinegar fondue, or visit the opera instead of the baseball stadium, or ride a bicycle to work. Chances are you’re not going to like these things as much as the stuff you already know and love, but you’ll still enjoy trying them, nevertheless, and–even more importantly–your companions will truly appreciate trying them with you.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

I’m hungry. My stomach is growling as I write this sentence, but I’m ignoring its demands, as an example to you. Screw the instant gratification thing this week. Your desires will be coming upon you close and fast; if you’re set on seeking their immediate fulfillment, you won’t have a moment to rest, or to enjoy the occasional satisfactions that come your way. You’ve got to learn to live with your hunger, now and in general. The best part is, once you do get to eat after being hungry for a while, food tastes a whole lot better.
