South Maui voters really like this guy

OUR TAKE ON MAUI COUNTY’S 2016 PRIMARY ELECTION

Yuki Lei Sugimura and singer/cultural specialist Napua Greig-Nakasone were the top two finishers, though Sugimura beat Greig-Nakasone by more than 3,000 votes. In the other Council races on the ballot, incumbent Don Couch (South Maui) came out on top as expected with 11,305 votes, though Pacific Biodiesel co-founder Kelly King turned in a strong-second place showing with 8,439 votes. Both will move on to the November General Election. As will incumbent Councilman Mike White (Makawao-Haiku-Paia) and challenger Trinette Furtado, though White bested Furtado by more than 5,500 votes. See everyone again in three months!

Well, we have another Primary Election under our belts–another day in the state’s history when we let a sliver of the population narrow our choices for political leadership. As expected, turnout statewide was pretty lousy– a mere 34.8 percent of Hawaii’s registered voters actually showed up (in Maui County, turnout was an even worse 29.6 percent). But even these numbers seem high when you factor in that only about 60 percent or so of the state’s adults are actually registered to vote. But hey, that’s democracy, right? People can vote, or they register their general apathy by doing something else, even though Hawaii makes it absurdly easy to vote (with a couple weeks of early voting and, in 2018, the introduction of same-day voter registration). That being said, we had some genuine surprises in this election. Sure, both U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii, and U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D–2nd District, cruised to victory over their Democratic challengers. Incumbents are notoriously difficult to knock out in primary contests, and given that Schatz and Gabbard basically acted as though their primary challengers didn’t exist, their respective victories were all but guaranteed. On the Republican side of these races, John Carroll and Angela Aulani Kaaihue won the honor of losing to Schatz and Gabbard, respectively, in the November General Election. Though I must say, Democrat Shay Chan Hodges, who ran against Gabbard, turned in one of the most cost-efficient vote tallies in Maui County, spending a mere 21 cents in campaign money for each of her 14,643 votes. Granted, she lost by nearly 66,000 votes, but when you’re a severely under-funded candidate who can’t even get the incumbent to agree to a debate, this is what happens. For Maui County voters, there were a variety of state contests on the ballot. Most were foregone conclusions (Speaker Joe Souki, D–Wailuku, easily trounced Democratic challenger Richard Abbett, while Rep. Justin Woodson, D–Kahului, and Sen. Gil Keith-

Agaran, D–Kahului, ran completely unopposed). Oh, and Rep. Lynn DeCoite handily beat Democratic challenger Alex Haller, allowing her to continue on to the November General Election where she’ll face Green Party candidate Nick Nikhilananda. But the Legislative seats representing South Maui and Upcountry were different. In South Maui, Democratic Rep. Kaniela Ing faced a particularly well-funded challenger in former state Chief of Protocol Deidre Tegarden (who collected tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from big business and land developers), while Upcountry, Democratic Rep. Kyle Yamashita had to fend off Aloha Aina Project activist Tiare Lawrence. Though Ing faced a series of bad headlines in both this paper and The Maui News over the revelation that he’d racked up a bench warrant back in February for missing a court hearing on an auto insurance violation, Ing soundly defeated Tegarden, 2,117 votes to her 1,219. Tegarden’s defeat is even more dramatic when you account for her campaign’s $96,487 in expenditures–more than twice what Ing spent. Put another way, Ing spent about $19.30 per vote to win, while Tegarden spent an astonishing $79.15 per vote to lose. In that same district, Republican Danny Pekus ran unopposed, so it’ll be interesting to see if the big

money that backed Tegarden switches to him as we move to the General Election in November. The Upcountry legislative race was a lot tighter, with both Yamashita and Lawrence spending $9-10 per vote. But in the end, incumbent Yamashita won out, 2,763 votes to 2,411. Since no one else was running in that district,Yamashita’s victory amounts to reelection. Over in the Maui County Council races, the big story was the Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu race, in which five candidates were vying to replace termed out Mike Victorino. In that race, former Councilmember Dain Kane came in first with 6,443 votes, but Shaka Movement activist Alika Atay came in second with 6,354 votes. Kane, a well-known name in local politics, spent not quite $30,000 on his race, which amounted to a respectable $4.41 per vote. Atay, on the other hand, spent just $17,677, which came to a miniscule $2.78 per vote. Both men will go on to the General Election in November. The same can’t be said for County Managing Director Keith Regan, who spent a remarkable

Could Alika Atay win a seat on the Maui County Council?

$111,473 on the race, which came to $18.52 per vote, just to lose to Atay by 337 votes. The other open Council seat was Upcountry, in which four candidates were battling to succeed termed-out Gladys Baisa. In that race, longtime local Democratic Party official

governor’s office announced that Gov. David Ige and United Public Workers State Director Dayton Nakanelua had worked out a deal to allow Kaiser Foundation Hospitals to take over Maui Health System. “I am pleased that we were able to work with UPW to ensure that state workers at the Maui healthcare facilities are treated fairly during the transition process,” Ige said in an Aug. 12 news release. “These employees are providing topnotch care for the community, and this agreement acknowledges their dedication to their patients. The settlement provides certainty to the people of Maui County that they will continue to have access to high quality health care.” United Public Workers had sued the state to ensure that the new hospital owners would honor its collective bargaining agreement. The union and state officials will now ask the courts to dismiss that suit. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

HOW HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK CELEBRATED ITS FIRST CENTENNIAL

Haleakala National Park celebrated its 100th anniversary July 30, 31 and Aug. 1 with events and activities in both the Kipahulu and Summit districts of the park. Festivities honoring the park’s centennial included talks, hikes, music by local band Nevah Too Late, the induction of a new Junior Ranger and the sharing of Hawaiian traditions through cultural demonstrations. During a ceremony on the exact date of the anniversary, Aug. 1, Superintendent Natalie Gates spoke about the future of Haleakala while reflecting on the visions of the park’s founders. “In our Junior Ranger programs, we ask kids what they want to see in 50 years–when they come back with their grandchildren,” Gates said. “The kids mention the silversword, nene, the crater, the waterfalls…. I imagine that in 1916 the founders of the park had similar hopes–that their grandchildren would see silversword, nene, and other natural and cultural wonders. We can see these wonders today and I hope we will see them in the future, thanks to … continued care, support, and stewardship.” Superintendent Gates paid tribute to the park staff, volunteers, partners, local residents, and visitors who have protected Haleakala, noting that many generations cared for the area before it became a national park; Haleakala National Park and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park were established Aug. 1, 1916 as one unit–Hawaii National Park–before becoming separate parks 45 years later. “In 1916, the National Park Service joined in the stewardship of this land,” Gates said. “We are lucky that so many of our staff, volunteers, partners, and local residents continue to share wisdom passed down from their kupuna to help us be better stewards.” Gates also spoke about park highlights through the decades. She said the 1960s will be remembered for the reintroduction

of endangered nene into the wild; at the time, the endangered bird had completely disappeared from the island. The birds were reintroduced into the park by Boy Scouts and rangers who backpacked into the crater with the birds on their backs. A highlight of the 1970s–1976 specifically–was the addition of the Kipahulu District to the park. Gates praised the dedication of Hana and Kipahulu residents and thanked the generosity of the Rockefeller family for helping make that inclusion happen. Also in 1976, more than 19,000 acres of the park were designated as “wilderness,” the highest level of federal protection for critical habitat, native species and natural processes. In the 1990s, Gates said the park began expanding its partnerships. Environmental groups, including Friends of Haleakala National Park and the Kipahulu ‘Ohana, began working with the Park Service to protect species, habitats, and cultural treasures and to share Hawaiian stories and traditions. Most recently–through the 2000s–the park expanded its education and internship programs to reach out to young people from kindergarten through college, the next generation of stewards. Park ranger Honeygirl Duman ended the Aug. 1 ceremony encouraging the staff, volunteers, partners and the public to continue working together for the good of Haleakala. She said park stewardship is akin to paddling a canoe. “We all paddle the canoe together,” Duman said. “We all have jobs that keep the canoe moving forward. It takes all of us.” Duman closed the evening with a Hawaiian blessing followed by birthday cake for all attendees. On the evening of Saturday, July 30, rangers and local photographers gave the public tips on sunset and night sky photography during an InstaMeet at the Haleakala summit. And on Monday, visitors watched the sun rise over the majestic land and celebrated the #CentennialSunrise, the first sunrise of the park’s next 100 years. To further celebrate the park’s 100th

The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa will unveil updated event and social spaces at the Ka‘anapali resort later this fall, including the expansion of the resort’s Monarchy Ballroom; transformation of a former garden to an event and social space overlooking the beach; and a new Regency Club Lounge. The Monarchy Ballroom will be expanded and updated into an elegant and contemporary social event space that reflects the history and culture of Maui. Designers will use bold colors inspired by Maui’s dramatic sunsets and vibrant floral colors of the island, as well as a layering effect reminiscent of Maui’s long tradition of hand-woven goods; together these elements will create a truly authentic and dynamic design, according to the company. The Hyatt also will enhance the ballroom with an outdoor entertaining area that can also serve as a VIP group entrance to the resort’s iconic Drums of the Pacific Luau. The expanded ballroom will be more than 18,000 square feet with the flexibility to be divided into seven breakout rooms, and will lead into an open-air pre-function space. The updated space will also offer improved lighting and air quality features to reduce energy usage. The popular Ka‘anapali resort is also creating a new, elevated outdoor event space–named the Halona Kai event lawn–which will offer panoramic views of Ka‘anapali Beach and the Pacific

Ocean. The Halona Kai event lawn will be located outside the resort’s Lobby level in the Atrium Tower and will be perched above the resort’s half-acre pool. The turf-covered event lawn will be more than 9,500 square feet with the capacity for up to 500 people for seated or cocktail events. Lush greenery and local flora will ring a permanent stage, and a peaceful koi pond nearby adds to the ambiance of the space. Designed to provide guests a turnkey set-up for presentation or wedding ceremonies, The Halona Kai event lawn will also offer state-of-the-art acoustic and audio-visual systems, and will be wired with 200 amp outlets and cabling for data and television. In addition, the Hyatt will open a new Regency Club Lounge later this fall for its overnight guests. The 3,333 square foot space will offer guests a comfortable and spacious lounge, as well as lanai seating with views of the Pacific and the resort’s Oriental Gardens, which features wildlife, waterfalls and its Swan Lagoon. The Regency Club Lounge will be flooded with natural light and appointed with comfortable lounge seating that nods to Maui’s long history of beautiful, handcrafted furnishings. Light colored and textured walls will reflect the day’s natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Hyatt’s Regency Club offers daily complimentary continental breakfast, daily local and national newspapers, light snacks and refreshments throughout the day and light hors d’oeuvres and Hawaiian-inspired desserts in the evenings. The architect for the project is Los Angeles-based Houston/Tyner. The Houston/ Tyner team specializes in luxury resorts, high-end commercial spaces and estate homes. Clear on Black, also out of Los Angeles, is designing the interior spaces. ■

In June, the online mega-website Pornhub announced a program to help blind pornography consumers by adding 50 “described videos” to its catalog, with a narrator doing play-by-play of the setting, the actors, clothing (if any) and the action. Said a Pornhub vice president, “It’s our way of giving back.” And later in June, another pornography website (with a frisky name–see bit.ly/29O4G9UURL) inaugurated a plan to donate a penny to women’s health or abuse prevention organizations every time a user reached a successful “ending” while viewing its videos (maximum two per person per day). Its first day’s haul was $39, or $13 for each of three charities (including the Mariska Hargitay-supported Joyful Heart Foundation).

A motorist in Regina, Saskatchewan, was issued a $175 traffic ticket on June 8 after he pulled over to ask if he could assist a homeless beggar on the sidewalk. According to the police report cited by CTV News, the “beggar” was actually a cop on stakeout looking for drivers not wearing seat belts (who would thus pay the city $175). Driver Dane Rusk said he had unbuckled his belt to lean over in the seat to give the “beggar” $3–and moments later, the cop’s partner stopped Rusk (thus earning Regina a total of $178!).

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE One of America’s major concerns, according to a U.S. congressman, should be the risk that if an apocalyptic event occurs and we are forced to abandon Earth with only a few species to provide for humanity’s survival, NASA might unwisely populate the space “ark” with same-sex couples instead of procreative male-female pairs. This warning was conveyed during the U.S. House session on May 26 by Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert (who seemed not to be aware that gay males might contribute sperm to lesbians for species-continuation).

WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND In May, the Times of India reported the death of a man known only as Urjaram, in Rajasthan, India, when, while hosting a party, he forgot that while he was enjoying himself, he had left his camel in the sun all day (during a historic heat wave) with its legs tied together. When Urjaram finally went outside, the enraged camel “lifted him by the neck,” “threw him to the ground” and “chewed on his body,” severing his head. And in July, the thief who ransacked a community greenhouse in County Durham, England, got away, but, according to residents, among his bounty was a bottle of rum that is usually offered only as a constipation remedy, in that it contained a heavy

dose of the aggressive laxative “lactulose.” Said one resident, “Maybe (the thief has) left a trail” for the police.

SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED Many website and app users are suspected of “agreeing” to privacy policies and “terms of service” without comprehending them (or even reading them), though most judges routinely assume the user to have consented to be bound by them. In a controlled-test report released in July, researchers from York University and University of Connecticut found that 74 percent skipped the privacy policy altogether, but, of the “readers,” the average time spent was 73 seconds (for wordage that should have taken 30 minutes), and time “reading” terms of service was 51 seconds when it should have taken 16 minutes. (If users had read closely, they might have noticed that they had agreed to share all their personal data with the National Security Agency and that terms of service included giving up their first-born child.)

LATEST RIGHTS Air Force Col. Eugene Caughey is scheduled for court-martial in August in Colorado Springs, Colorado, charged with six counts of adultery (a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice)–which he alleges constitutes illegal discrimination because he is heterosexual. That is, only heterosexuals can have the “sexual intercourse” required for adultery since the UCMJ defines the term as between a man and a woman; same-sex pairs cannot have “sexual intercourse.” (Even if Caughey prevails on the discrimination issue, he faces other, more serious charges that may bring him life in prison.)

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS News of the Weird reported in 2007 and 2014 that, despite the abundant desert, Middle East developers were buying plenty of beach sand from around the world (because the massive concrete construction in Dubai and Saudi Arabia, among other places, requires coarser sand than the desert grains tempered for centuries by sun and wind). The need has now grown such that London’s The Independent reported in June that black market gangs, some violent, are stealing beach sand–and that two dozen entire islands in Indonesia have virtually disappeared since 2005 because of sand-mining.

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES Joshua Long, 26, was arrested in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in June for possession of a suspected-stolen human brain (which he allegedly kept in a shopping bag under the porch at his aunt’s trailer home). Police believe that the brain had been a medical teaching aid, but that Long was lacing his marijuana with the brain’s embalming fluid. (Long and a former resident of the trailer home called the brain “Freddy.”) ■

was biking home from work–a six-mile trek–when you appeared on a sidewalk with your thumb out hitching a ride. I suppose I was wrong expecting you to share the sidewalk. It’s what I would naturally do, so I was taken back by your shouting at me to get onto the shoulder of the road “where I belong!” We bicyclists use the shoulder because bike paths aren’t available to us so when a sidewalk appears we take advantage of them for safety reasons. You wouldn’t consider this because you’re a miserable, mean no-mannered human being only thinking of yourself. You didn’t have to push me off the sidewalk onto the shoulder of a busy road during afternoon rush hour traffic. Hope it took an hour in the hot summer sun before you got someone to pick up your sorry ass. ■

‘DRUNK WITH POWER’ AN OPEN LETTER TO THE NEW MAUI COUNTY

LIQUOR

CONTROL DIRECTOR

GLENN MUKAI BY MAX ERRICKSON AND ANTHONY PIGNATARO LC Director Glenn Mukai, Bet you never thought we’d say this, but we’re actually missing Frank Silva right now. Sure, there was definitely a gangster vibe about how your predecessor ran the Maui County Department of Liquor Control (a job he held for 22 years), but he also had a sense of class about him. Make no mistake–Silva was a tough guy. He sent his investigators after establishments all manner of chickenshit reasons: timesheets that spelled an employee’s name a bit differently than on her official liquor card; rappers using foul language on stage during a show; customers–heaven forbid!– crowding walkways. This isn’t surprising, given the nature of the LC. It’s annual budget hovers near $3 million, but it’s not like other departments. The LC has its own funding source–licensee fees and fines–and that makes it pretty damned powerful. But Silva also seemed to understand when to ease off the pressure. He grasped that great bureaucratic rule of always seeking power, but by doing so in a way that didn’t look like he was seeking power. You’ve had this job since June 1 or so, but we can’t shake this feeling that you’ve adopted all of Silva’s bad habits, but none of his good ones. You’re still pretty new, so we’ll grant you some leeway. But this isn’t 1950, and American society has made great strides in the field of government accountability. Case in point: the whole way you handled former LC Deputy Director Tracy Fujita Villarosa’s exit from the department leaves a great deal to be desired. It also sends a powerful message across the county–one

overworked since I’ve been here.” Wow. Just plain wow. It’s stuff like this that makes us remember Frank Silva with fondness. That guy had two of his sons working at the LC, but at least he was shrewd enough to eventually stick them over at the Lahaina office. Look, here’s the deal with nepotism: it’s insidious not because of what YOU think, but what everyone who works for you thinks. Yes, Yoshizawa has worked at the department for a decade or so. And while you didn’t promote her, you removed–for your own vaguely articulated reasons–a level of management that once sat between you two. Now she answers directly to you. This sends a dramatic, powerful message to the rest of your staff. But we all know this is all just window dressing. The real problems here lie with your relationship with the licensees. And the county’s been buzzing about that since from almost the moment you sat down as director. “The new liquor commissioner you appointed Ida [sic] demon,” Maui resident Sid Alpert wrote in an email to the Maui County Mayor’s Office on

their licenses. To wit: Stephen West: “How many businesses have been affected by this?” Glenn Mukai: “45.” A month ago, we started hearing rumors that a half dozen establishments were facing suspension of their liquor licenses because of minor, even trivial errors in their renewal applications. Then a few weeks ago, the number rose to 17. Now it stands at 45. For those who may not be familiar with this, each year bars and restaurants need to renew their liquor licenses. The renewal application itself is just a page long, but establishments also have to hand in their certificates of insurance and tax clearance certificates (state and federal). The deadline is June 15, but the license itself doesn’t expire until June 30. “What is that two weeks for?” Wailuku attorney Dave Jorgensen, who represents a long list of liquor licensees and testified at the Aug. 10 hearing, told us after the hearing about what he considered the “fundamental confusion” that led to so much trouble. “The chairman [Robert

that you wish to exercise absolute power over the department. Let’s be clear about this: she told us that you gave her two days notice to vacate her office. There was to be no transition time, you said. She was to clean out her office and be gone. While we’ve had our disagreements with some of Fujita Villarosa’s policies and practices, we’ve never denied that she was capable. She spent five years as deputy director–a job you held many years prior–and she was more than qualified to take over as director. That the Liquor Commission narrowly chose you over her in no way diminishes her institutional knowledge and experience (oh, and in case you were wondering whatever became of her, she got a new job over at the county’s Office of Council Services–have fun with that in April when it comes time for you to testify during budget hearings). Look, it’s fine if you didn’t want to work with Fujita Villarosa. To be fair, that would have been kind of awkward, given that both of you were competing for the director slot. But to can her with just two days notice was beyond rude–it was authoritarian. Though given some of your actions since then, we’re guessing you’re fine with that designation. For instance, at the Aug. 10 Liquor Commission meeting, you gave what we’ll generously call mixed signals as to your desire to even have a deputy director. For instance, you told the Liquor Commission that you were forming a special committee to find someone qualified. But on Aug. 11, The Maui News quoted you as saying that you did not want a deputy director “because I told the commission exactly what I’m going to do and I can only focus on that.” With all due respect, what kind of double talk is that? Not that you could house a deputy director at this point–even if you went out and hired one this afternoon. We can’t believe The Maui News didn’t mention this in their story on the Aug. 10 Liquor Commission hearing, but how did you manage to break the deputy director’s office? You told the commissioners that Fujita Villarosa’s office has been empty since she left. But LC Supervisor Karilee Yoshizawa (who is also your daughter– a point we’ll get to soon) said that LC personnel had been using the old office as a break room until a mysterious “foul odor” developed. Now we’re not talking burned microwave popcorn foul, but bring-in-a-Haz-Mat-team foul. Or put another way, something entirely new stinks at the LC. Seriously–you brought in an actual Haz-Mat team to deal with this, and still the odor persists? Sigh. Anyway, back to your daughter working directly beneath you. Or right next to you, as the photo in the Aug. 11 Maui News shows. And way to deliver one of the most politically tone-deaf statements we’ve ever seen when the paper called you on it! “I don’t even think of father, daughter,” you told The Maui News. “She might be

July 31 (we obtained a copy of the email through the state’s open records law). “He is screwing with the lives of longtime establishment owners. He is drunk with power and should be fired and put up on charges.” We learned of this email because it appeared at the end of the Aug. 10 Liquor Commission hearing as a point of discussion. “It’s kind of outrageous,” Liquor Commissioner Stephen West said. And though you didn’t really talk about it, you did explain that your department really turned up the heat on establishments this year when it came time for them to renew

Tanaka] seemed to say that it’s time to make corrections. But the director sees it as time to start over. The problem is that two weeks isn’t enough time to file a new application. You need three to four weeks, minimum.” Yes, we’re dealing with a bunch of licensees that, for whatever reason, either got their renewal application in late or really, really close to the deadline. And ultimately, it’s hard to argue that they don’t bear ultimate responsibility here. But was it really necessary to bring the hammer down on establishments who handed in applications with misplaced

commas? Or that were printed on the wrong color paper? To borrow a phrase from Jorgensen, these are not “material problems,” and thus should have no bearing on the ultimate decision to renew or not renew. Mike Bunyard, a bartender at the Westin Maui, also testified at the Aug. 10 hearing. He testified that the hotel’s license had been suspended at 4:40 in the afternoon of July 1 “apparently because our revenue reporting got delayed in the mail, which was certified, because of back-up from tropical storm Darby.” For Bunyard, dealing with the suspension was a nightmare. “I was told that they were trying to contact anyone at the county, department directors or anything they could do to figure it out,” he testified. “All the bars, lounges and room service would have to quit selling at 4:30. Between 6:30 and 7, we got a call saying we could now open all bars and outlets and start serving again. However, the hotel had already cut many of our bartenders and wait staff because of lack of business and our bars and lounges.” For his part, Jorgensen told us that none of his clients had license renewal problems this year. But he was also clear on why–they paid him a great deal of money to get the paperwork done on time (he said he even had to fly to Oahu to get federal tax certificates signed for four of his clients because the Maui IRS office closed inexplicably for two weeks– the expenses of which he justifiably billed to his clients). For many licensees on Maui, that’s not an option. Of course, merely retaining an attorney doesn’t guarantee anything. Wailuku attorney Craig Nakamura, who also represents a variety of Maui liquor licensees, testified at the Aug. 10 about one of his clients, the Maui Beach Hotel. Problems with its license renewal have left the hotel dry since July 1. In the past, Silva had simply waived the need for a certificate of occupancy for the hotel. But you extended no such courtesy to the hotel. “We have not been able to find a certificate of occupancy for the entire hotel,” Nakamura said at the Aug. 10 hearing. “Silva was more liberal,” Nakamura added. “He was supportive of the industry and he was able to allow us to have a few days to do corrections.” Please think over what Nakamura said. He testified in an open hearing that Silva– former LC Director Frank Silva–was “more liberal” than you in regards to license renewals. Unless, of course, the only reason you turned all these licensees upside down was to slap them around and show them who’s the boss now. But that would be a reprehensible act from a rookie who feels that arbitrary despotism is an acceptable substitute for actual management. That wouldn’t be you, right? Then again, you did give The Maui News a lot of talk about “transparency,” but then didn’t return our phone call for this story. Very truly yours, Max Errickson and Anthony Pignataro ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

We believe that by caring for the land, we can deliver the best produce to our customers and strengthen the foundation of our community.” McCargo says the restaurant side of the agro-business model is essential to his vision. “My goal is to teach a new generation of agro entrepreneurs,” he says. “The food preparation and food service is one way to add value to the product. Hana Ranch Provision is that incubator for these ideas.” But it’s the aina in Hana that tells McGinness what to grow, not the chefs. “The tumeric–the land told us to grow that,” says McGinness. “It’s our land that’s the driver of what to grow more than the chefs. Being in the food industry, the farm-to-table industry, I know it’s the farms that drive what’s hot for the chefs. Like, for example, the cassava tots. I had all this cassava on the farm and we sure would like to find something to do with it. So the chefs took it and made it work. That’s more our strategy. We do grow some stuff that really isn’t the best for our land here, like kale. That’s great in Northern Europe, but we’re

’m 20 minutes into a warm, sunny hike up the slope of Hana Ranch’s organic Hana Farm with Brian McGinness, the operations director of Hana Ranch, and Grant McCargo, the CEO of Bio-Logical Capital and founder of the new plan for the Ranch. In addition to the leafy greens and papayas that provide salads, garnishes and ingredients to the Hana Ranch Provisions restaurant, Hana community and their Hana Ranch Food Truck, McGinness and McCargo show me a few of the other crops they’re planting. “Brian, point out this crop, and what we are doing with it,” says McCargo. “Oh yeah, those are our ulu trees,” says McGinness. “I have quite a few planted around the farm and ranch. That is the breadfruit. One of the most incredibly bountiful plants. They create so much food. They’re also a canoe crop. We got these from the Breadfruit Institute in Kahanu Gardens.”

“We just planted about 300, but the cows got to some of them,” says McCargo. “I worry about the island doing industrial monoculture. We need to grow more food. We can survive without oil–we can’t survive without food and water. Climate change is a real thing.” “It will be about eight years before the ulu trees we planted will bear fruit,” says McGinness. “They become huge trees. They’re going to live a long long time. They will produce about 800 pounds of food per tree, twice a year. It’s a very starchy food. It’s a long term vision for us.” This long term vision that McGinness is referring to is the Ranch and Farm feeding the larger community through their restaurants, farmers market and their CSA program with vegetables and beef. “We’re working on a whole systems approach to land use,” says McCargo. “We have gotten very specialized in how we execute business today. If you go to business school, which I’m guilty of, they tell you to do one thing and get really good and squeeze the heck out of it. Well, natural systems don’t work that way. Nature never plants just one thing. How we do our agriculture and energy

on our rural landscapes is our biggest negative impact to the planet right now. Our goal is to demonstrate a diverse resilient model that is regenerative versus extractive.” In our talk, McCargo uses a lot of technical terms–he’s a bit of a business savant when it comes to his operation–but I love his ideas. Of course, you don’t have to drive to Hana to get your hands on the finished product, just stop in Paia at the Hana Ranch Provisions. They have a cafe and bakery that opens at 7am and goes until 3pm. Their restaurant starts service at 11am and goes until 9pm. Back in July, they did a quick renovation and shifted they way they’re running the Paia restaurant. “We’ve learned over the past year that our customers want delicious and affordable food in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere,” says Olivia Maki, who does marketing and communications for Hana Ranch. “After listening to community feedback, we introduced counter service in our dining

Hana Ranch Raised Beef Burger

room at Provisions and are no longer offering table service and reservations. By changing to counter service, we’re able to lower our menu prices so more people can enjoy our food on a regular basis.” I stopped in to see the changes, and I can’t complain. The dining room and bar is gorgeous and comfortable. The counter service was smooth, and although the menu had been altered a bit, our favorites were still there, like the yucca tots, sweet potato fries, spicy ahi sandwich and Hana burger. Oh, and the Hana Ranch steak chili is phenomenal. Chef Gary Johnson is in charge of creativity and flavor at the restaurant, but he looks to the organic farm for his inspiration. “We grow our own ingredients, absolutely!” says Johnson. “We started the restaurant as an extension of the farm, to highlight the beautiful produce and share our story with the Maui community. Our produce is grown organically without the use of harmful synthetic chemicals or genetically modified seeds.

in Hawaii. We’re growing it because lots of people really want it. There is some give and take. But that’s another one of the reasons why we have the restaurant–it’s our opportunity to influence the trends here. Where else are you going to showcase cassava tots?” Stop by for happy hour from 3-6pm daily for 15 percent off their food menu, $3 draft beer, $9 glasses of wine and $9 craft cocktails. Every Tuesday, they offer kama‘aina night: 10 percent off your bill if you ask for the discount and show proof of residency. On Wednesday, Aug. 24, Hana Ranch Provisions will also celebrate their first anniversary at their Paia location. To celebrate, they’re hosting a tap-takeover with Maui Brewing Company from 6-8pm with live music and a special beer pairing menu designed by Chef Johnson. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

Cooking Class THE MAUI FOOD INNOVATION CENTER WANTS TO TEACH YOU FOOD PRESERVATION

“Ken Love has really great credentials,” says Speere. “He’s the director for the Tropical Fruit Growers of Hawaii. He travels the world identifying and searching out exotic fruits. He’s known as one of the leading fruit foragers of the world. He knows how to can or jelly or preserve all of our exotic plants.” Speere says the food manufacturing sector is huge, but in Hawaii, we’re a long way from developing that. “What we want to do with the Food Innovation Center is provide the facility, the educational programs and services like coaches and mentors for small businesses,” he says. “We’re also going to do some pop-up events to find experts to have them provide training and new skills. We’re starting from ground zero in Hawaii when it comes to the food manufacturing industry. We want to reverse our reliance on imported foods by being able to create more locally originating

correctly–because you want to do it the right way. It’s really exciting because I think our food community wants to take on some of the traditions of the past and learn how to capture bumper crops. If we have an abundance of guava, we make guava jelly. If there’s a big mango season, we make chutney. What we’re hoping to do with these classes is build a cadre of community members that really understand these skills. One of the obligations when you graduate from the program is that you go out into the community and share your knowledge with 20 hours of volunteer services.” The class will be taught by tropical fruit expert Ken Love. The class will also teach knife skills, basic food science, meat curing and proper sanitation.

f you’ve ever dreamed of making your own kim chee or creating your own line of jam, University of Hawaii Maui College is offering a new program at their Maui Food Innovation Center (MFIC) designed to make you an expert. It’s called Master Food Preservers. It starts Aug. 25. and runs through Sept. 23. “The class is a certificate program out of UC Davis,” says Chris Speere, the MFIC site coordinator. “It’s similar to our Master Gardener Program. Participants go through a curriculum. Over 64 hours, they learn how to do jellies and jams, dehydration of fruits, high and low acid pickling and canning, and new fabrication in sausage-making. These are really great skills to learn–and learn

food manufacturing.” Those who complete the course will earn a Hawaii Food Handlers Certification. There are eight days of classes, and it takes place on Thursdays and Fridays from 8am to 4pm. And if you’re not into food manufacturing, the Maui Food Innovation Center will also launch a few other non-certification culinary classes next month. “I just started to roll out short-term specialized training classes,” says Speere. “I have a series starting in September. One will be on bento and how to make them. I have a master chef from Japan that lives here in Hawaii that will teach a course on sashimi. These will be threehour courses with demonstration and tasting. I will have a class on uncovering the mystery of sous vide cookery–why chefs use it and how you can apply it to your home cooking. I think people will really respond to that class. I also have a

foods in the marketplace.” What’s more, Speere says that the food manufacturing space across the country is dominated by women. “What’s really interesting is the specialty food space in our nation is being dominated by women, and we see that here on Maui,” he says. “Women are the ones that are stepping forward and creating very neat specialty foods. We have things like macadamia nut hummus, cookies, donuts, kim chee, nut milks and nori crackers–all made by women. Out of the two training programs that we’ve held this year, 90 percent were women. Overall research in the US is showing that women-owned businesses are on the rise. This past year, the MFIC also had an business accelerator program with two graduating classes. They will resume next year with a focus on agribusiness and chefs. 'Pete's Dragon' Disney does a decent job remaking a corny classic ★★★★★ Rated PG / 103 Min.

T

he original 1977 Pete’s Dragon is one of those Disney movies I must have watched every week for most of my early grade school years. I suspect our videocassette copy must have snapped apart out of sheer exhaustion. Upon revisiting the film recently, I was embarrassed by my childhood adoration of it. While the Helen Reddy/Mickey Rooney musical has charming animation, some nice songs and a big heart, it’s terribly corny and wall-towall with clunky slapstick. In the 2016 version, Bryce Dallas Howard stars as Grace, a plucky forest ranger who discovers Pete, a young boy (played by Oakes Fegley), who’s been living in the wilderness by himself for years. Grace’s father (Robert Redford) has long believed the forest hides a dragon. The boy confirms that this is not only true but that the dragon in question, named Elliot, can fly. The new Pete’s Dragon is perfect for its intended audience, as there’s ample dragon footage and no dull scenes that will make

children antsy. Elliot the dragon is so lifelike, adorable and touching, the movie succeeds in making us believe in him as fully as Pete does. This movie knows what it has and showcases Elliot often. In fact, some of the best moments are quiet scenes in which Elliot is alone in the woods. The edginess present within the story has been softened in an odd way. Instead of a consistent orchestral score, there are lots of folk songs and Redford’s Garrison Keillor-like narration. Both touches are needless and a poor substitute for an exciting score. On the other hand, there’s no modern, auto-toned updates of “Razzle Dazzle Day” or “Candle on the Water,” which is a relief. The message is also potent and well considered: children who become orphans due to family tragedies are not victims or doomed to walk the Earth alone. Everyone deserves to be part of a new family. In this case, both Pete and Elliot have only each other and are in need of someone to take care of them. Dallas Howard can light up any scene and easily matches Reddy as a luminous screen presence. I’m not sure why

Hey, in the sequel can we try to gain power while still battling injustice?

Redford is in this and he appears to be wondering that himself but he acquits himself well in a character role. The other humans are a problem. Wes Bentley and Karl Urban (who’s even more broad here than he is playing “Bones” in the new Star Trek films) play ill-defined roles that mostly require them to stare slack-jawed at Elliot (call it The Jurassic Look). Isaiah Whitlock Jr., one of my favorite character actors, plays the town sheriff who doesn’t hesitate to send a squadron of cop cars when a dragon sighting is reported. It’s that kind of movie. While this is officially a remake of the earlier Disney movie, it’s more of a re-telling of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. There’s also bits of Harry and the Hen-

dersons and Where the Wild Things Are, but mostly, this is another attempt by the Mouse House to recreate Steven Spielberg’s 1982 masterpiece, the best movie Walt Disney never made. The elements are all here, including a central character named Elliot. There’s also a climactic moment where our heroes are on the road, headed towards armed cops and a boy cries out, “Fly, Elliot!” No, bicycles don’t go flying across the moon, but you get the gist. I wanted the humans to be at least half as interesting as Elliot and, on that count, the movie doesn’t deliver. But kids will likely love this, parents won’t kick themselves for attending and everyone will be awestruck every time Elliot appears. ■

FIVE STAR REVIEWS! “Like any great place, can have a line, but it is well worth it. Our group had a selection of menu items, and all were good, but the fish tacos were fantastic, and this is from someone who would generally not order fish tacos. The layers of flavors you find here are well beyond what you find in most places.”

Horoscope

Sign Language LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

You’re like weather; everyone around you is affected by whatever you’re up to, whether they like it or not. Consequently, you tend to be surrounded by flexible, spontaneous, good-hearted people; those who aren’t up to being battered by your moods keep a good distance, if they can. However, every so often one of these more delicate individuals washes up next to you, and for whatever reason, can’t escape–like this week. Don’t take it personally when they find everything you do abrasive, offensive, or annoying. It’s them, not you. Instead of being hurt, be compassionate–go easy on the poor things, and turn down the brightness, just a little. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

I was rewatching Six Feet Under and a character said something that made me think of you: “If you think life’s a vending machine where you put in virtue and you get out happiness, then you’re probably gonna be disappointed.” Tragically, many Virgos suffer under this kind of delusion. It’s easy to believe that life is a simple equation: you work hard, do good things, help people, and you’ll be happy and fulfilled. The equation’s often true– but not always. The trick is believing in and practicing it, even after some exception has blown it off the page. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

What happens this week is huge, only you may not notice it. A vastly important decision will be made, but with so little fanfare it’s likely to be eclipsed by something tiny and petty. It won’t even dawn on you that this huge step’s actually been taken until you start experiencing one of its many significant consequences, somewhere down the line. So what? It’s nice that this one’s an easy one, and there’s no point in making a big deal about it, or getting in the way. I just mention it so you can appreciate, admire, and relish the moment as it happens, instead of having to do so in retrospect. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

What do you do when you need a haircut but just don’t have time or money to get one? (Well, if you’re a teenage Scorpio, you just say, “Screw it.”) Nowadays, you wear a hat (or head scarf, or wig, or gallon of product). You have the same attitude towards emotional baggage, I see. It’s no big deal to cover something up as a temporary measure, but some people take it too far, amassing huge hat collections (or their equivalents) to hide their guilty secrets. Go ahead and keep yours under a hat–for now. But if it’s still there in three weeks, you’re in deep shit. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Let’s pretend we’re robots. Some of our parts are hard-wired, and others are simply software. The former: things we just can’t change, no matter how hard we try or how much we want to. Adding new programming can mitigate or modify them, but they’ll never go away. Yes, people can transform–especially you, Sagittarius. But there’s a limit to how much transformation is possible, and how permanent it is. Recognize this and figure out if the problems you’re having with someone you love are software conflicts–which can be resolved, with patience and time—or irreconcilable hardware incompatibility. Once that’s clear, how you proceed should be, also. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Capricorns have a way of dissolving into the background when they want to (and occasionally when they don’t). This is one of those times. It doesn’t mean shit’s not happening to you, or that you’re not going through anything; it just means that no one notices unless you specifically call their attention to it–which can often take quite a lot of effort. So if you’re perfectly happy working through whatever’s going on for you by yourself, by all means, keep at it. But if you want companionship on this leg of the journey don’t suffer (or celebrate) in silence–go out and get some. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Here it is again, your perpetual dilemma: practical considerations duking it out against impractical dreams. What’s it going to be? Buckets of money,

doing something that isn’t especially bad or soulkilling, but also isn’t all that inspiring? Or the leap of faith that may amount to nothing and cost you everything (or possibly be the coolest thing you’ve ever done)? I urge you: at least consider both options. That’s all I’m asking: seriously think about it. It might be exactly the right decision for you to keep on the path you’ve been on and wait for a better time. But I guarantee you’ll be happier walking that path once you’ve rigorously questioned it.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

So many Pisces have less-than-perfect eyesight for a reason: You have trouble focusing. Sometimes all you can see is the big picture, without any details. And other times you view everything through such a tiny filter that your whole life seems just one way, i.e., you’re as perpetually unlucky and miserable as Lemony Snicket’s Baudelaire orphans, or as chronically upbeat and happy as Big Bird. This is why you occasionally need the perspectives of those around you, to keep things in balance, to help you remember that yes, your life is not all shit, or that you’re not always such a righteous and perfect person. This week, notice who the people are who do this for you–and figure out what you can do for them.

YOGA & MOVEMENT STUDIO

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

There’s no question you’re full-on. You rarely do things halfway; when you discover something new you’re into, you barely do anything else until you’ve exhausted your interest in it. Then you move on to the next thing. A tiny fraction of these exploratory ventures become part of your semi-permanent repertoire; most of them fall by the wayside and are rarely or never picked up again. Unfortunately, you occasionally (though thankfully not as often) do this with people. The problem: people can come back to haunt you. Beware this kind of haunting this week; however if it occurs, don’t flee from it in terror. There’s something you can learn here: making things right by making room in your life for something that’s not the absolute IT thing at the moment can still be quite rewarding. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

There are some skills and assets you possess that you just can’t easily and tastefully reveal in mixed company (no matter how interested some of the other parties might be). For instance, how do you let someone know they should date you because you’re fantastic at oral sex, without being so crass you put them off? This is why you should also develop a vast array of front-line credentials, things people can be impressed by during casual small-talk. You’re already the shit once people get to know you–this week, work on improving your first impression.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

3 is your magic number this week. Nothing in pairs is likely to work; if you choose to hang out with just your lover, or one parent, or anyone one-on-one, you’re not likely to have a good time; about the only thing you’ll have is problems, and some of them might persist for an aggravatingly long time. Stick to threes and you’ll have a surprising amount of fun. This might mean consideration of some unusual companions—in fact, your best new friend might be someone you’ve usually considered a third wheel, not a happy third of a ménage á trois. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Cancers like being prepared for things. You may claim to like surprises, but you secretly despise them. When you’re startled, you’re quite likely to clam up and retreat into your shell, and like any shy hermit crab, it takes you quite a while to come out again; in the meantime, even patient visitors usually get bored and take off. That’s why I’m delighted to advise you this week–stay alert but not on edge. You’re likely to be caught off-guard at least three times this week. Happily, not a single one of these shocks will turn out to be anything but good news and good times. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
