'Heritage Tourism' THE CASE AGAINST THE NATIVE ACT
PHOTO COURTESY RALAWAMI / WIKIMEDIA COMMONS
Americans in Federal tourism activities, public records and publications, including Native American tourism information available on Web sites.”
Hawaii being on-brand
NOTE: The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the Native American Tourism and Improving Visitor Experience (NATIVE) Act. It currently awaits President Barack Obama’s signature. U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (the bill’s sponsor) says the bill will “enhance and integrate native tourism, empower native communities, and expand unique cultural tourism opportunities in the United States.” I asked Sydney Lehua Iaukea, who holds a doctorate in political science and is the author of the 2014 book Kekaa: The Making and Saving of North Beach West Maui, for her insight on the bill. She ended up writing the essay below, which highlights the enormous complexity that surrounds the mixing of Native Hawaiian culture with commercial tourism. -Anthony Pignataro, Editor At a time when we are diving into primary documents from the Hawaiian Kingdom, testifying “no” to Federal Recognition at the statewide U.S. Department of the Interior meetings that were held in 2015, and learning our history as a sovereign state and that sovereignty was never extinguished, the Native American Tourism and Improving Visitor Experience Act looks to confuse and muddy these issues at best. At worst, it is yet another tool to align with a nation-withina-nation Federal Recognition attempt that recently failed with Na‘i Aupuni. It’s interesting that the last section pleads neutrality in that this seemingly innocent tourism bill will not act as an “alteration of the legal relationship” with Hawaiians: “SEC. 6. Effect. “Nothing in this Act alters, or demonstrates congressional support for the altera-
tion of, the legal relationship between the United States and any American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian individual, group, organization, or entity.”
collection and analysis;
Where do Hawaiians show up in this bill? Native Hawaiians are not included in the description of the bill, with its intention “To enhance and integrate Native American tourism, empower Native American Communities, increase coordination and collaboration between Federal tourism assets, and expand heritage and cultural tourism opportunities in the United States.” Native Hawaiians are not mentioned until #5 and #6 in the Purpose of the bill, and these statements are disturbing. Specifically disturbing is #5:
“(C) to create a better user experience for domestic travelers and international visitors;
“(5) to encourage Indian tribes, tribal organizations, and Native Hawaiian organizations to engage more fully in Native American tourism activities to increase visitation to rural and remote areas in the United States that are too difficult to access or are unknown to domestic travelers and international tourists;” This would encourage every rural place “too difficult to access” free and open access. Every place and all parts of culture open to the possible destruction of mass consumerism. In essence, no place is sacred or worth protecting, every place is open for intrusion. Hawaiians are not mentioned in the following sections: “(1) IN GENERAL.—The plans shall outline policy proposals— “(A) to improve travel and tourism data
“(B) to increase the integration, alignment, and utility of public records, publications, and Web sites maintained by Federal agencies;
“(D) to align Federal agency Web sites and publications; “(E) to support national tourism goals; “(F) to identify agency programs that could be used to support tourism capacity building and help sustain tourism infrastructure in Native American communities; “(G) to develop innovative visitor portals for parks, landmarks, heritage and cultural sites, and assets that showcase and respect the diversity of the indigenous peoples of the United States; “(H) to share local Native American heritage through the development of bilingual interpretive and directional signage that could include or incorporate English and the local Native American language or languages; and “(I) to improve access to transportation programs related to Native American community capacity building for tourism and trade, including transportation planning for programs related to visitor enhancement and safety. “(2) CONSULTATION WITH INDIAN TRIBES AND NATIVE AMERICANS.—In developing the plan under paragraph (1), the head of each agency shall consult with Indian tribes and the Native American community to identify appropriate levels of inclusion of the Indian tribes and Native
Finally, there are the issues of nativeness and tourism. Interesting that it is titled “SEC. 5. Native American tourism and branding enhancement.” Native Hawaiians fall under this section of Native American tourism–the crazy agenda to rewrite actual history. And also, we are not a brand and cannot be branded (although it does say the cultures should fit within the national brand of the U.S.)! This section is almost too Disney-like to comment on. By the way, I write about “heritage tourism” (from the purpose of the bill) in my chapter coming out this December, as part of a collaborative book, that looks at the history of Lahaina. Heritage tourism is the new catchphrase, that has actually been around for years, whereby selling “historical” cultural aspects alongside larger narratives of U.S. imperialism attempts to hide that it is still consumption of culture. The chapter about Lahaina looks at how the tourism discourse from Ka‘anapali created the “historic” town of Lahaina, but really they had to make up much of the discourse because those buildings were mostly plantation and not whaling buildings. But “heritage tourism” feels good that some history is shared–whose history is subjective. Native for Hawaiians has two political understandings. One is Native Tenant from the Hawaiian Kingdom. The other is native Hawaiian under the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921. This Act designated nativeness and introduced blood quantum into a Hawaiian national consciousness, so that only those with more than 50 percent aboriginal blood could qualify for homestead opportunities. The U.S. government had previously practiced blood quantum designations on Native Americans and promoted the same colonial discourse in Hawaii. Kehaulani Kauanui calls this a “welfare discourse” that sets up a dependent financial and emotional relationship with the colonial power. The U.S. Apology Bill of 1993 continued this discourse by noting that the U.S. will seek to make reparations to the native Hawaiians. The subsequent Akaka Bill and the Na‘i Aupuni push for this nation-within-anation entity further ignores the political facts and reinforces ideas of nativeness–or the museum version of culture, where “authenticity” must be produced and proven. These images fit nicely with the convenient narratives of mass tourism that paint natives as less than, lacking and always in need of civilization–such a one-dimensional view of any culture does not fully represent the uniqueness and knowing of any people. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

joke around asking me to teach him how to render a proper salute and how to march in a formation because he never got to learn those through Basic Training.” I can’t think of a better anecdote that illustrates Takai’s chill spirit and confidence.
HAWAII GETS SPARE CHANGE FROM FED FOR ENDANGERED SPECIES Hawaii got a few bucks from Uncle Sam last week to help protect threatened and endangered species, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz announced on Sept. 15. According to Schatz, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has agreed to spend an additional $3.8 million on four endangered species programs. Now we know that in Washington, $3.8 million is couch change–a B-2 bomber burned up at least that much in fuel when it flew a single 25-hour mission from Missouri to Libya and back–but hey, I suppose it’s the thought that counts. Anyway, Maui County’s share of the pie is two-fold. First, it would be a part of the statewide $395,000 Hawaiian Hoary Bat Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) for Biomass and PHOTO BY FRANK BONACCORSO / USGS / WIKIMEDIA
So on the morning of Sept. 16, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump scammed the media yet again, with a sham press conference that was actually a big PR stunt for one of his new hotels (outraged at being played, pool photographers reportedly destroyed footage they took of the hotel). But squeezed in between his shameless hucksterism, Trump finally, belatedly, backed off the birther nonsense surrounding President Barack Obama that Trump has been pushing for years. Here’s the Washington Post’s take on the morning’s events: “Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Friday acknowledged for the first time that President Obama was born in the United States, ending his long history of stoking unfounded doubts about the nation’s first African American president but also seeking to falsely blame Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for starting the rumors,” the Post reported. “‘Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it. I finished it, you know what I mean,’ Trump said at his newly opened luxury hotel in Washington on Friday morning. ‘President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Period.’” As the Post noted, “This is not the first time that Trump has accused Clinton of first raising questions about Obama’s birthplace.” This accusation is a straight-up lie–one that “has been repeatedly disproved by fact-checkers who found no evidence that Clinton or her campaign questioned Obama’s birth certificate or his citizenship,” according to the Post. Sigh. You know what I want to see? A news story about a time when Trump told the truth about something. Seriously though, of course Trump lied about his racist birtherism and tried to pin the whole sordid BS on Hillary Clinton. What else would he do? Apologize? Take responsibility for his actions that legitimized a ridiculous conspiracy theory that was never anything other than fuel for white supremacists who wanted to tear down the nation’s first African-American president? Hilarious. For those of us in Hawaii, we must never
forget that Trump pushed his birtherism to savage levels when he cynically, brutally manipulated the tragic death of state Health Department Director Loretta Fuddy in a December 2013 plane crash off Molokai to serve his racist, birther ends. To wit, on Dec. 12, 2013, Trump tweeted “How amazing, the State Health Director who verified copies of Obama’s ‘birth certificate’ died in plane crash today. All others lived.” In fact, Fuddy’s cause of death was an irregular heart beat, the Associated Press reported not long after the accident. But that’s irrelevant to Trump, then or now. Fuddy was no more a real person with real grieving family members to Trump than any of the rest of us. Nothing is real to Trump except his own brand–and drowning that brand in racist white supremacy is perfectly fine with Donald J. Trump.
every single day to say hello and goodbye, but in saying that word, we’re actually conveying a much deeper meaning,” Gabbard said in her speech. “In the deepest and truest sense of the word, aloha means I come to you with an open heart and offer you my deepest respect, love and care… This open heart–this spirit of aloha–is what I think of when I think of my colleague, my fellow soldier, and my friend, Mark Takai, because he carried this aloha spirit with him wherever he went. He shared it with everyone that he came into contact with.” But according to her remarks that morning, Gabbard also shared a funny story I had never heard before about Takai’s military career, which actually dovetailed with Gabbard’s some years ago (when he died, Takai was a lieutenant colonel in the Hawaii Army National Guard; Gabbard is currently a major in the same branch). ““Because Mark had a Master’s degree in Public Health, he came into the National Guard as a direct commissioned officer,” Gabbard said in her speech. “What this meant in practical terms was that he didn’t have to go through Basic Combat Training or Officer
REP. TULSI GABBARD REMEMBERS REP. MARK TAKAI It goes without saying that the death of 49-year-old U.S. Congressional Representative Mark Takai, D–Hawaii, on July 20 due to pancreatic cancer was very sad. Takai was a solid legislator and a great person. On the morning of Sept. 15, the U.S. House of Representatives held a Special Order of speeches for Takai (many members, according to a news release from Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s office sent out that day, also wore aloha wear). “In Hawaii, the word aloha holds a very special place in our hearts. It’s a word we use

This will, according to a news release from Schatz’s office, “develop an HCP to conserve the Hawaiian hoary bat (HHB) during biomass and timber harvest activities in the Hawaiian Islands.” Second, the Kalua‘aha Ranch Conservation Easement on Molokai would get $500,000 to “permanently protect 969 acres to support the recovery of numerous endangered species, as well as minimize sedimentation of the nearshore ecosystem and the nation’s largest fringing coral reef,” according to the news release. Schatz’s office says that “Surveys of the property have documented three highly endangered native plant species–one of them having fewer than 50 extant individuals” and that the Kalua‘aha Valley is also home to endangered birds like the Newell’s shearwater and the Nene goose. ■

Maui’s Eliza Yoshida was among five teachers from Hawaii who were recognized by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard in Washington, D.C. last week for their work in mathematics and science teaching. The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) was presented to outstanding K-12 science and mathematics teachers from across the country. The winners were selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial selection process at the state level. The honorees from Hawaii are Yoshida from Pu‘u Kukui Elementary School in Wailuku; Alicia Nakamitsu from Aiea High School; Stan Mesina from August Ahrens Elementary School; Bryan Silver from Kalani High School; and Patricia Urasky from Waimea High School. The Hawaii teachers were among 213 individuals who traveled to Washington, D.C. from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Department of De-
fense Education Activity schools, and the U.S. territories as a group (American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands). Each awardee received a citation signed by President Barack Obama, a congressional certificate, a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and a trip to Washington, D.C. for the award ceremony, which was held Sept. 8.

University of Alabama, 2015 national football champions, dominates also in the 280-school bass-fishing competition, and New York’s Paul Smith College’s 5,000-student campus raucously cheers its championship log-splitting team (against seven other schools). And Ohio State whipped another football powerhouse, Nebraska, in ice-based broomball.

WHY? BECAUSE WE CAN! We now have computer or cellphone apps to, for example, analyze the quality of one’s tongue-kissing; alert you when your zipper is inadvertently down; make a refrigerator also be a stereo and photo album; notify you when you need to drink more water; check the male-female ratio at local bars so, if you’re on the prowl, you can plan your evening efficiently; and reveal whether your partner has had someone else in bed while you were away (via differential contours of the mattress). And then, in August, the creators of the new South Park virtual reality game announced that they had figured out how to release a “fart smell that is crucial to game-players when they put on the VR mask.
INEXPLICABLE Pizza Hut announced in August that it had finally mastered the technology to turn its cardboard delivery boxes into customers’ workable disk-jockey turntables and will make them available shortly in five stores in the United Kingdom. (Each box has two record decks, a cross-fader, pitch and cue controls, and the ability to rewind.) Music stars P Money and DJ Vectra are featured, and the boxes will sync via Bluetooth to phones and computers.

Steven Scholz was sued for $255,000 in Oregon City, Oregon, in July after he allegedly fired on a family’s house (15 gunshots) and traumatized their young son inside. Scholz explained that he thought the Biblical Rapture had just occurred and that he was the only survivor. And Aman Bhatia, 27, was charged with battery and lewd molestation in July after allegedly groping six women at Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon water park. Despite witnesses telling police that Bhatia was positioning himself for furtive groping, Bhatia claimed that his glasses were broken and thus he was not aware that women were in his path.
COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS In July, Ryan Bundy (a leader of the Malheur federal land occupation protest in Ore-
gon in January), exercising his philosophy as a “sovereign, wrote his judge that he rejects the federal court’s jurisdiction over him in his upcoming trial, but that he would agree to co-operate–provided the government pays him $1 million cash. Bundy (who signs court documents “i; ryan c., man) said for that sum, he would act as “defendant–or, as a bonus, if the judge prefers, as “bailiff, or even as “judge. (Bundy’s lawyer, not surprisingly, is Bundy.)
RECURRING THEME People with too much money have been reported over the years to have paid enormous sums for “prestigious license plates, usually the lowest-numbered. In China, the number 8 is regarded as lucky, and a man identified only as “Liu obtained Shanghai province’s plate “88888–for which he paid the equivalent of $149,000. Shanghaiist.com reported in June that “Lucky Liu was forced into annoying traffic stops by police eight times the first day because officers were certain that the plate was bogus.
IRONIES Greenland’s first “world-class tourist attraction, opening in 2020, offers visitors a “stunning view of the rapidly melting ice sheets from the area’s famous, 250,000-year-old Jakobshavn Glacier. The United Nations-protected site is promoting a “tourist vista that some call “ground zero for climate change–and which others hope won’t be completely melted by 2020.
UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Third-grade teacher Tracy Rosner filed a lawsuit against the county school board in Miami in July (claiming to be the victim of race and national origin discrimination) after being turned down for a job that required teaching Spanish–because she doesn’t speak Spanish. Rosner said “nonHispanics like her are a minority among Miami schoolteachers and therefore that affirmative-action-style accommodations should have been made for her.
THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT The Tykables “baby store for adultsâ€? opened in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, recently and so far has outlasted attempts to shut it down (as being, allegedly, inappropriate for the community). Part of the business model is selling adult diapers for medical needs, but a major clientele is adults with a fetish to be treated like helpless babies– with diapers, clothing, accessories and furniture (oversized high chairs, playpens and cribs). Though the owner controls store access and has blocked out window views, critics are still uncomfortable explaining the store to their children. â–

h people in Kahana Ridge, here’s some conch shell etiquette for you: Pu, pronounced “poo,” is the Hawaiian Name for conch shell. A gift from the ocean, the Pu comes out of the life-giving waters with a sound that flows across the ‘Aina. To blow the Pu is a call to the divine. The blowing of the Pu should always be accompanied by protocol. When it’s blown, how many times and in which directions all have a complex set of meanings. In fact, the meanings of the number of blows are so sacred that we do not reveal them in print. Rather, we share them with you in your sacred ceremony. The blows in ceremony symbolize the journey of the ancient Hawaiians as well as your own journey in that eternal moment. Those of you just blowing it for 20 minutes or more, for no reason other than make noise, it’s not a toy. Please respect it and its heritage. ■

LAHAINA TOWN CLEAN UP Talking story with founder Matt Lane By Anthony Pignataro

att Lane works at the Peter Lik Gallery in Lahaina. But 12 years ago, when he was a server at Hard Rock Cafe just up the street, he organized the first Lahaina Town Clean Up. Saturday, Sept. 24 will see this year’s clean up, which has ballooned from a modest gathering of Lane and his trash bag-wielding friends into a well-funded, extensively sponsored event that enjoys tremendous support across Maui. “This year’s clean up includes all the beaches, both boat harbors, and streets of Lahaina Town all the way from Puamana to Mala Ramp,” states the official event news release. “This event has taken place

for 12 years in collaboration with Malama Maui Nui and the Hui O wa‘a Kaulua, making it not only one of the largest, but one of the most successful ongoing town cleanups in Hawaii.” On Wednesday, Sept. 14, I spoke with Lane by phone about why he started the annual clean-up and where he intends to go from here.
of the neighborhood. Lahaina is a big neighborhood, so it helps to get a lot of people. We have so many people already–250 people already committed. There could be 400 to 500 people there–we’ve had that many before.
Q: A:
I’m just a facilitator–I help everyone get together. Yeah, I’m the founder, but we’re just creating a model for everyone. The Lahaina Yacht Club wanted to clean up Mala; the Rotary Club was doing a clean up. It was perfect
So what is the Lahaina Town Clean Up exact? It’s a community clean up. Grassroots. Your friends and family get together to take care

timing. Everyone’s already working on their individual efforts. Everyone’s just coming together.
Q: A:
Who else is helping you?
Magen Schifiliti with Trilogy, Sandy Schneider with the Rotary Club Lahaina Sunset, Andrew O’Riordan with Surfrider Foundation, Kristin McFarland with Maui Surf Clinics, Lahaina Harbor Master Miles Lopes, Javier Barberi of Down the Hatch, Christy Kozama of Malama Maui Nui and Keahi Ho of Lahaina Yacht Club.
Q: A:
Why is this clean up necessary?
A lot of waste accumulates, but education is important. Just picking things up makes you think about trash, about how you consume. You become conscious of how people treat the world as their ashtray. I’d prefer to not be cleaning up. I’d like to just be proactive–put up signs, do stenciling, hold workshops. We just can’t keep cleaning up the beaches. It’s better to do preventative measures.
Q: A:
Have you seen any progress through the years?
Over the last 12 years, the town’s a lot cleaner, for real. One year, we took 10 dump truckloads out of Moku‘ula. We’ve cleared multiple 40-yard dumpsters. It’s been a really good effort. Stuff that was out there five, 10 years ago isn’t coming back. The County of Maui’s been good about picking up white goods–washers, dryers, etc.–so there are a lot less of those. And Malama Maui Nui has played a huge part in this. They facilitate all the community organizations doing clean ups, making it very easy for us.
Q: A:
Why did you start this?
I was walking down to the beach to surf with my friends in Lahaina. They really cared about how we treated the land. We talked about cleaning it, and I said let’s do it. It was their idea, and they all helped.
Q: A:
What was it like that first year?
We learned that having less waste cans around Front Street is actually better than having a lot of cans. People hold onto things, and throw away less if there aren’t a lot of cans around. Also, cigarette butts are our number one trash item.
Q: A:
I was going to ask you what you’ve picked up the most.
Cigarettes. That and bottle caps. Since the plastic bag ban went into effect, there has been tons less waste. We used to find hundreds of bags, but they’re just not there anymore.
Q: A:
What else have you learned?
That coming together as a community is really powerful. It’s wild to see kids grow up, in college now, and still participating. They’re not going to waste like we do.
Q: A:
How do recent years compare to that first clean up 12 years ago?
The participation–it’s incredible. We already have groups going down there, forming their own clean ups. There’s also a lot less garbage on the beaches today. It’s easier for us to clean up now so we can do stuff like preventative drain stenciling. Before, we just didn’t have the time.
Q: A:
Stenciling?
Yeah, the county wants us to measure the storm drains. We’re making a map of where all the drains are. Nobody’s done that in a really long time.
Q:
I also noticed that your volunteers do data collection. What’s that?
A: Q: A:
It’s part of the International Coastal Cleanup–the ICC. As people pick up trash, they record data on these cards. Such as?
What are we picking up? How many cigarette butts are we picking up? How many plastic bags are we finding? Are there animals?
Q: A:
Ok, so someone signs up to participate. What should he or she expect?
They should bring a water bottle. They will come in the morning. Everyone will be put into groups. They’ll get gloves, maps and be assigned a route leader. The first objective will be Mala Ramp. Eight to 10 boating companies will help clean it up as well. Rotary will work on the tennis courts across from 505 Front Street. And one group will meet up with Trilogy and clean up the harbor. Then everyone fills out their ICC data cards. There will be some gifts–t-shirts, hats–and lunch will come from Pacific’O.
Q: A:
That’s a lot.
We’ll also be doing a bag-less clean up. We’ll be using reusable sacks provided by Maui Brewing Company. We’ve never had a clean up before where we didn’t use trash bags.
Q:
Ok, for my last question, I noticed in your email signature that you’re part of something called Cultivate Media. What is that? That’s something that started with Community Work Day. We helped put together school gardens. All projects I do now fall into that. Putting on concerts, consulting–it’s all about cultivating relationships and the people around me.
A:
Q: A:
How?
When I went on tour with Jack Johnson, I talked to venue owners. It makes sense to have water stations instead of having people use water bottles. It also makes sense to use local food and beers. We’re trying to change music venues around the world. I’ve been working on this for four years. I want to do music events that help change the way we consume.

releasing The Complete BBC Sessions earlier this week, with eight previously unreleased songs. “Led Zeppelin isn’t done yet,” Page told the Telegraph ’s Neil McCormick. “It was done with so much freedom and conviction by master musicians, that’s why it has travelled over time. It was an extraordinary connection, the synergy within the band. There was an area of ESP between Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham and myself.” We don’t have to imagine the synergy between Plant and Page–we can see it in action this weekend at Zeptember 7 at Mulligan’s on the Blue. Now in its seventh year, the Zeptember tribute show has made itself the stuff of Maui legend. This year, more than 30 of Maui’s talented artists will get together to perform their favorite Zeppelin tunes from Presence, Zepplin’s seventh studio album. “It’s brilliant to see returning at-

alternative treatments not supported by traditional healthcare. “Some ask for special music CDs to calm and support them on their way to chemo,” says O’Keefe-Todd. “Others, special makeup, wigs, a healing yoga session, specialty food, guidance with naturopathy or nutrition. Whatever the needs, Aloha Cancer Project tries to find and deliver the items requested. Zeptember 7 benefits this cause with a portion of every ticket sold. This year, for the first time, the event has tables of eight which include admission and VIP wait service with all the proceeds benefiting ACP. Corporations and individuals wishing to support can buy a table before the event and gain on stage promotion of their contribution.” And it all happens at Mulligan’s. “Zeptember is performed in an authentic Irish bar and pub, Mullligan’s on the Blue,” says O’Keefe-Todd. “Mulligan’s of-

ed Zeppelin contoured the rock landscape with their groundbreaking heavy sound in the 1970s. I like to think about what Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham would have been like had they launched the band in this decade. Would they still shun promo TV appearances? I’d love to see them on SNL . Just think of their outrageous summer #festie performances and the hashtagged selfie posts from groupies and fans that would immortalize them in social media stats. Page and Plant haven’t left the limelight. They were side-by-side in Los Angeles in June, defending their song “Stairway to Heaven” from a plagiarism lawsuit. Ultimately, a jury decided that they didn’t steal tracks in 1967 from guitarist Randy California’s band Spirit (it’s now on appeal). Page has also been working on the Zeppelin archives, re-
tendees from Maui year after year,” says Zeptember co-producer Ruth O’KeefeTodd. “Their support has made Zeptember an annual tradition. It’s not like watching a band on stage; it’s like being a part of the band. It’s a magical night that stays with you afterwards. From time to time, when you hear Zeppelin on the radio, you think back to the artists who performed that song on stage and it just makes you smile.” Roger McKinley, the house bagpiper at Fleetwood’s on Front St., will open Zeptember 7 with his traditional “Zeppelin in B Flat Homage on Bagpipes in Kilt.” Other artists you can look forward to include Gretchen Rhodes, Joe Caro, Kai Katchadourian, Gina Martinelli, Satchel Gleason, Deborah Vial and Ani Hesse from Hollywood’s School of Rock. The band is led by co-producer Niles Rosenblad, who also plays lead guitar and is on vocals. You never know who

might show up to jam on stage–last year, it was Mick Fleetwood on drums. “This is not easy stuff to play, and is really not easy music to master,” says Rosenblad. “We have the best artists on Maui. These are some of the best in the world. Staying faithful to the original sound and vibe of Led Zeppelin is a major goal we all share. Getting creative within the structure, we are also providing numbers that are totally unique and vanish with the end of the evening. I think those special moments are part of the magical allure of Zeptember.” The show benefits The Aloha Cancer Project (ACP), a nonprofit dedicated to to helping people deal with cancer by facing it with hope and aloha. The ACP provides a foundation to fight the disease with alternative tools–the two founders are survivors of cancer who want to assist individuals with information and fund

her entry We Cannot Bury the Past. All the works at the exhibition are breathtaking. As I drew near to what I thought was a painting, I was blown away to find that it was actually a giant photograph of clouds, taken by Christopher Cole. The image is huge, 72 inches by 84, and is mounted in a thick, two-inch frame. As you stand before it, you get the feeling that you’re floating over the clouds, staring into a distant horizon filled with the gentle, warm hues of dawn. I had never seen a photo capture the essence of clouds and atmosphere so flawlessly. “This work comprises a selection from an ongoing project titled ‘On Haleakala,’ taken from different vantage points in Haleakala National Park,” says Cole. “This digital chromogenic print, made from an 8x10 color negative, conveys a sense of the ever-changing mood and inimitable beauty of the Hawaii Pacific as seen from the slopes of Haleakala.” The photo has already sold for $15,000. Throughout the exhibition, I was struck by the artistic interpretations of our National Parks. Each piece was wonderful, creative and inspiring, even sparking glee as I related their artwork back to the park I’d visited. “I thought it was a good opportunity to make this our first national call to artists to enter their work for consideration by jury,” says gallery director Neida Bangerter. “We used an online submission service called Café (Callforentry.org). This enabled an artist who had visited our parks to submit work. The call went out in November 2015, which gave artists time to create new work. We had 400 entries that were juried through images submitted. There were 76 works selected, with 18 of those works from other states.” The artists were asked to create a work that was inspired by a list of Hawaii, Maui, Molokai and Oahu National Parks. I was
point of human and environmental endangerment, extinction, globalization and our human role in these processes,” says Chimera.”This work depicts Haleakala’s three rarest plant and bird species: Kiwikiu (Maui Parrotbill), Nohoaau (Geranium arboreum) and ‘Oha wai (Clermontia Samuelii). The numbers of individuals painted represent the actual numbers remaining in the field: 261 Parrotbill (estimate only), 20 clermontia and two geraniums. The radial concentric design on blue refers to the house of the sun, home to the Park Service’s greatest number of rare species.” Part of the exhibition is a symposium hosted by a panel of National Park employees, taking place this Sunday, Sept. 25 from 10am to 12pm at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s McCoy Theatre. Tickets for that are $10. There will also be a free Observe and Play Family day on Oct. 1 at 10am, with a guided walk through of the gallery that includes a chance to meet some of the artists and make a piece of art to take home. “The symposium will feature Natalie B. Gates, Superintendent of Haleakala NP, Cindy Orlando, Superintendent of Hawaii Volcanoes NP, Bryan Harry, former Hawaii Volcanoes NP Superintendent and former Pacific Area Director and Matt Wordeman, President of Friends of Haleakala National Park,” says Bangerter. “The panelists will provide an overview of their parks’ shared history and answer questions about current park topics.” This exhibit will hang through Nov. 6. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm, and before Castle Theatre shows and intermission. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E news, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

alking into the Schaefer International Gallery one recent afternoon, I was drawn to the artwork to my left. It consisted of large, wood blockprinted panels of silk displaying dreamlike images by Jonathan Clark. There were more magical discoveries just beyond it–a basket of hand-painted porcelain egg shells by Marie Ritzman, an ephemeral painting of clouds, oil landscapes, sculpture and video. It’s all part of the Hawaii National Parks 2016 Centennial Juried Exhibition, now on display at the Schaefer. Clark, a Maui native who is living in New York, won the “Best Installation” honor for his ‘Ahinahina in Mist silk panels. “Driving up the slopes of Haleakala, I never quite know if the clouds surrounding me will eventually part to reveal the summit’s otherworldly landscape,” says Clark. “And often, they don’t. But ‘ahinahina and cinder stones peek through the vast expanse of white–remnants of an expansive vista lying quietly beyond the mist. And it’s in those moments that the rest of the world falls away, lost in silence. I carved several woodblocks with images of ‘ahinahina and cinders, and then printed them onto raw silk using acid dyes. The carved image inherently loses clarity in the translation from woodblock to fabric, but that translation brings the work one step closer to the very environment that it evokes. Nature is aestheticized by its own ephemerality–bloom, wilt, hibernation, wakening are all echoed in our own lives.” Jurors James Jenson, the curator of Contemporary Art at Honolulu Museum of Art in Oahu, and Kumu Hula Nalani Kanakaole of Hawaii Island also award “Best in Exhibition” to Maui artist Mary Ann Leigh for her Nene Threat Display Protects the Family entry. California-based artist Kathy Yoshihara won the “Best Three-Dimensional Work” for
surprised to find that I’d visited all of them, and that there were none on Kauai. Bangerter said she wasn’t sure why Kauai doesn’t have a national park, but this show does include artists from Kauai. “Schaefer International Gallery received an inquiry in 2012 by staff members at Haleakala National Park, bringing our attention to the Hawaii National Parks 2016 centennial, in conjunction with the National Parks centennial,” says Bangerter. “We felt that highlighting the importance of Hawaii’s National Parks, and offering a national call to artists who are inspired by these places, would be a wonderful focus as part of our 2016-2017 exhibits programming.” Each of the National Parks included–Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, Haleakala National Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Honouliuli National Monument, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Pu‘ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park and World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, has an information plaque. There are also some special historic displays for Haleakala National Park. Just the fact that some travelled to Hana through Haleakala back in the day, when you went by foot or horseback because following the edge of the island was challenging, put me in my place. Our National Parks are precious. They house the last of our native forests and, in turn, the last of our native birds. Those native birds and flora and fauna are expressed in a lot of the artwork. At first, when I observed Melissa Chimera’s oil on canvas–Inheritance, Haleakala–I thought it looked like a painted Mandala design from afar. Up close, I realized that the mandala design is actually Kiwikiu. “My work contemplates the tipping

Oliver Stone Vs. The NSA ‘Snowden’ is a great movie ★★★★★
there intensity and a view of Snowden as his life was in immediate danger. Initially, Gordon-Levitt’s decision to closely mimic Snowden’s voice distracts, because it’s so obviously an actor’s affectation. His approach grew on me and his performance is excellent. A nice surprise is Woodley. The romance between Snowden and Mills is pivotal and Woodley (breaking free from the Divergent franchise) gives a sexy, livewire performance. She and Gordon-Levitt have great chemistry and make the romantic subplot as involving as all the globe-trotting intrigue. Stone has always been exceptional at assembling a great ensemble of actors and his latest is no exception. In particular, Zachary Quinto (perfect as Glenn Greenwald, the reporter who broke the story), Nicolas Cage (endearing as a composite character), Melissa Leo (an ideal Poitras) and Scott Eastwood (as Snowden’s nononsense superior) are first-rate. Snowden tells an engrossing story, is rich with ideas and hones in on what matters right now. The topic of government surveillance, how it’s supposed to protect but becomes a form of control, is first and foremost on Stone’s mind. Here’s a real surprise: this is as close to a bipartisan Oliver Stone movie as we’re
Rated R / 134 Min.
I
t’s great to see Oliver Stone with a fire in his belly again. His previous film, Savages, a violent crime drama about California pot dealers, played like a laugh-free Pineapple Express and is easily Stone’s weakest. On the other hand, Snowden is a return to form, as it downplays Stone’s tendency for excess and provides a solid, complex portrayal of its polarizing central figure. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower whose unveiling of top secret US government documents led him into exile. We meet Snowden in 2013, when he’s hiding in a Hong Kong hotel, and the narrative jumps around to show us the events that shaped him. We see his failed bid to become a soldier, his introduction to politically passionate Lindsay Mills (played by Shailene Woodley) and his encounters with government agents, whose cavalier attitude towards their work inspired Snowden to run and tell the world what he discovered. Linda Poitras’ 2014 documentary Citizenfour is perhaps the most definitive take on Snowden. It provided you-are-

Why is there writing on his face?
ever likely to see. Stone criticizes the previous and current U.S. Presidents, as well as stances The White House has taken regarding online privacy. Stone goes after various targets and brings up topics that don’t offer easy solutions. It seems he’s aiming to make a more balanced, less biased film than before. At least, until the very end. The biggest mistake Stone makes is putting Edward Snowden in his own movie. In their concluding scenes, both Gordon-Levitt and the real Snowden are bathed in a Spielbergian glow. Clearly, Stone means to celebrate Snowden but the hero worship of the final moments take away the careful balance the rest of the film demonstrates. Also, seeing the real Snowden somewhat undermines Gordon-Levitt’s performance, who worked hard to get under his character’s skin.
A lot of the visual cues and dialogue in Snowden are very on-the-nose. Expecting subtlety from Stone is probably foolish. Yet, this is one of his strongest recent films, as his directorial panache and personal commentary are in plain sight but, for the most part, not hindering the film’s ability to captivate and enlighten. Thankfully, Stone’s missteps don’t derail his movie, which, above all, is an entertaining reflection of real events and not a documentary. Snowden is suspenseful, always intriguing and overloaded with great scenes. While not without flaws, Stone’s film captures our uncertain times and provides yet another great conversation-starter. He did that 25 years ago with JFK, his masterpiece, and has done it again. Stone’s movies are alive with urgency and not to be missed ■

Horoscope
Sign Language LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Being nitpicky could be your downfall this week. I know you want everything to be “just so,” and you have some very good ideas about how things should play out, but you can’t control everything; in fact, there’s very little about this week’s situations that you can control. Trying to whine, bitch, or issue commands to compel everything to conform to your liking will only make you appear anal, spoiled, and petty, on top of still not getting you what you want. I don’t expect you to suddenly become a low-maintenance person overnight. Just turn the volume down, would you please?
different people to who I am now. I’m more similar to some people I meet than I am to those former incarnations, with whom I share only memories, not taste in music, attitudes, or aspirations. You’ve changed even more than I have; you’re one of the most dynamic people I know. So why let yourself feel so limited because of who you were? Yeah, your teenage self might not have been up to what you’re dreaming of. Even the person you were yesterday might not be capable of it. But the person you are today is capable–if you don’t get stuck on all the yous that weren’t.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
There it is, that dream you had, perfectly preserved in amber. Nothing about it’s changed; it hasn’t deteriorated one bit–but it hasn’t improved or evolved, either. It’s effectively dead. You can admire it, long for it, display it proudly or with shame, but you can’t resurrect it. That particular goal is forever beyond you now. This week, however, your life vaguely resembles Jurassic Park. You can salvage something from this extinct idea, a bit of mental DNA. Mix it with some of the new stuff you’ve been brewing and you might actually have something good, something viable. Something alive and ready to grow.
Do you ever stop to think about the many little miracles you take for granted? How amazing is it that you can punch a few numbers into a little chunk of technology in your hand and talk, instantly, to your buddy in New Zealand? Technological progress is one tangible thing we can point to that changes the repeating themes of human history from a circle to a spiral, both on a grand scale and a very personal one. Things you wouldn’t have conceived of as possible ten years ago–like a long-distance relationship, for one obvious example–are now much more of a reality. Don’t rule them out as a matter of course.
ANSWERS
...to questions from page 4
Tattoos tattoosbybyJeremy RachelLifseyG
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Your willingness to experiment has occasionally hurt people. It’s the unfortunate fallout that comes of taking something on that you’re not certain you’re up for. But what else are you supposed to do? Sometimes the only way to figure out if you’re into something is to try it. All you can do is be honest with those involved that it’s just an experiment and it might not work out. That might not be enough to completely avoid bruised feelings, but it’s all you can (and should) do. The alternative is not trying new stuff until you’re absolutely certain that it’s exactly the right thing for you. And how boring and pointless would that be?
I think the best human solutions are those that take into account the incredible diversity of human experience. Binary answers to complicated problems are just too plain simplistic to really work. In the short-term, they might seem more dramatic or effective, but in the end they’re simply not viable. How do you make room, especially when you’re dealing with a group, for the more complex solutions that are actually required? That’s the question that you’ve got to answer this week, and I’m useless; I don’t know, either. What I do know is this: If you don’t figure out a way, no one will, and we’ll all be stuck with the devastating end result. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
By now every smart Capricorn has learned the lesson of backing up your data in at least two or three different places. Otherwise, all it takes is one hard drive crash and you’re screwed. Naturally, life isn’t so simple. If you crash a relationship, you can’t take it back to the last stable spot and reboot it from there, avoiding the mistakes the second time around which caused the crash during the first run. You get one shot; second chances aren’t the same as a fresh start–they’re too colored by the mess-ups that came before. Keep that in mind–before you make a mistake you can’t take back. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
Aquarians aren’t usually big on the whole group identity thing. While you possess a strong sympathy for your fellow humans, there’s something about defining yourself as part of a specific group that rubs you the wrong way. At the same time, you let yourself be subject to these periodic bouts of loneliness and isolation, the perfect cure for which is being part of some kind of community. I don’t expect you to suddenly become a gleeful joiner, but you’re also not going to ever be perfectly happy doing the hermit/loner thing. Find someplace where you belong. It’ll do you good. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Sometimes it’s all about the smell of a flower. A favorite television show. A smile with a stranger. Hell, life might all be essentially meaningless and pointless and end in lightless oblivion. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyed. Maybe nothing ever amounts to anything. But there are millions of little things that don’t need to amount to anything to be perfectly wonderful. When you’re overburdened with existentialist ennui, try not to think or worry about all that big unknowable shit. Just focus on the simple meaningless stuff that doesn’t need to be big. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
What is identity? I look on my former selves like my 5 year-old self or my 19 year-old self, and they are
You loathe having your loyalty questioned. You’d do anything for those you love, which is why it’s so irksome when someone asks you to prove it. If someone were drowning in icy water you’d jump in to save them. But this theoretical posturing–where you’d have to prove you’d jump in, without actually being in that situation–is almost impossible to deal with. You’ve been torturing yourself over it, haven’t you? It’s just not worth it, my dear. Either they have faith in you or they don’t. Go ahead and save them when they need it. But until then, don’t bother trying to convince them you would.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
I’m a big fan of self-belief, just like you. The only way to achieve something grand–even absurdly, improbably grand–is to believe it to be possible. To decide that it’s unattainable is to give up before you’ve begun. I’m not preaching to you. I mean, you practically taught this to me. But your job’s not done. Someone else desperately needs to learn how to properly dream. They’re writing off their highest hopes as unachievable fantasy–which of course makes it so. You and I know it doesn’t need to be like that. Convince them of the same, would you? VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
You purport to prefer everything clean, categorized, and coordinated, but the truth is you’re obsessed with mystery. You organize the boring shit so you can devote more attention and energy to the fascinating people and things that don’t fit into any box–the ones you can actually learn something from. Unfortunately, your chaos-clearing impulses have gotten out of hand; the reason you’re bored is because mystery has moved out. It’s tricky to allow the unknown back into your life once you’ve swept it out. You can’t just clear out a closet and say, “Look, fly in here. I’ve made some space.” You’ve actually got to open all the windows and doors and then close your eyes. Let it happen. Smile. This’ll be fun.
