Miami tidal flood damage earlier this month

THE HORROR STORY KNOWN AS SEA-LEVEL RISE Seriously, I can’t believe this intelligence-insulting contraption known as the 2016 Election hasn’t exploded yet, like the unstable engine that it is. For anyone with even three functioning neurons, this year’s presidential contest has been a daily, sometimes hourly assault on the senses from which we may never recover as a society. There are a million examples of crimes committed against the thoughtful, but I’d like to focus on just one: the complete absence of any sort of meaningful discussion of climate change. We had three presidential debates between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump. I somehow found the energy to watch all three, and never did I hear a question on climate change. This phenomenon even inspired a bit of wry humor from U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, D–Hawaii, shortly before the final debate. “I am hoping that Fox devotes time to climate change at this debate,” Schatz Tweeted shortly before the final debate. “I’m also hoping to be six feet tall by Thanksgiving.” The total lack of real debate on climate change in the presidential election is a tremendous victory to the nation’s oil companies and those who still, after decades of scientific inquiry and research, deny it exists. These people cling to the notion that climate change is a fraud and/or hoax perpetrated on our nation to kill the petroleum industry. In the meantime, scientists pump out depressing study after study that shows, yeah, much of the planet is changing right now, and not in ways that are beneficial to us or the myriad other species that share space with us. Here’s one small local example, from

earlier this month: researchers from the University of Hawaii’s Sea Level Center have found that our best historical ocean-level records may have actually led scientists to underestimate sea level change during the 20th century. “It’s not that there’s something wrong with the instruments or the data, but for a variety of reasons, sea level does not change at the same pace everywhere at the same time,” said Dr. Philip Thompson of the UH Sea Level Center in an Oct. 3 news release from the University of Hawaii. “As it turns out, our best historical sea level records tend to be located where past sea level rise was most likely less than the true global average.” Thompson’s biggest example of this concerns what scientists call ice melt fingerprints (the UH news release defines these as “global patterns of sea level change caused by deviations in Earth’s rotation and local gravity that occur when a large ice mass melts”). Put simply, sea-level rise doesn’t occur everywhere on the planet equally, so looking at these ice melt fingerprints in the past can give researchers an idea of what the world’s shorelines will look like in the future (the illustration shows levels of sea level rise from the Greenland ice melt. The black circles identify the best historical water level records,

which mostly fall in the blue areas that are less than one millimeter per year. As a result, according to the UH research, these records underestimate global average sea level rise due to the Greenland melt by about 25 percent.) “During the 20th century, the dominant sources of global ice melt were in the Northern Hemisphere,” states the news release. “The results of this study showed that many of the highestquality historical water level records are taken from places where the melt fingerprints of Northern Hemisphere sources result in reduced local sea level change compared to the global average. Furthermore, the scientists found that factors capable of enhancing sea level rise at these locations, such as wind or Southern Hemisphere melt, were not likely to have counteracted the impact of fingerprints from Northern Hemisphere ice melt.” This is scary, but it’s also esoteric–the nuances of scientific investigation aren’t something most of us talk about at the bar

“At noon on a brilliantly sunny day here, several blocks from the beach, a lake of salt water suddenly appeared in the street, filtered up from the porous limestone that resides underneath the whole county of Miami-Dade,” CityLab reported on Oct. 23. “On the corner of 79th Street and 10th Avenue in the Shorecrest neighborhood, people wandered outside their apartment buildings to stare at the rising water, sloshing through in rain boots to take out their trash. “‘It’s been like this for a few days now, rising and then receding and then rising again,’ says Jessica Benitez, a resident who moved to Miami from her native Venezuela about a month and a half ago. She says she didn’t know these apartments would flood before she moved into them, and she still doesn’t know how to predict when the water is going to rise.” The CityLab story is terrifying: middleand lower-income residents forced to learn to live with ever-increasing flood damage from high tides that seem to take longer to recede each time they happen. “Today,

or even at home around the dinner table. Well, outside of Miami Beach, that is. See, the willful exclusion of climate change from our nation’s presidential debates presupposes that it’s all just that: egghead theories that exist only in computer models. In fact, climate change right now is changing our planet’s landscape in scary, costly ways. It’s just not happening in places where the rich and powerful live.

the Miami area experiences about six of these sunny-day flooding events per year,” CityLab reported. “But the Union of Concerned Scientists projects that by 2045, they’ll be happening 380 times per year.” This will continue to happen in low-lying areas like coastal Florida– and in Hawaii, as well–regardless of whether our presidential candidates wish to talk about it.

PETER LIK UNVEILS NEW BOOK OF HAWAII IMAGES

A group of West Maui teachers recently visited 30 historical sites to learn more about the role Lahaina has played throughout Hawaii’s history. For 12 consecutive years, the Lahaina Restoration Foundation (LRF) has provided the free History In Our Back Yard tour to new teachers from Westside schools; the program has reached more than 230 educators since its inception. The History in Our Back Yard tour was initiated by Andy Kutsunai, retired history teacher and former Chair of LRF’s Community Education Committee. The annual tradition continues through the efforts of Co-Chairs Karee Carlucci and Louisa Shelton, along with their dedicated volunteer committee and the support of LRF staff and Board of Directors. “One of many goals of LRF is to provide educational activities related to Lahaina’s history,” Shelton said. “Specific to this tour, we hope to help these teachers by providing them with a better sense of place as new members of our community. We appreciate the time they take from their busy schedules to participate, and also the awesome community support provided to make this happen.” LRF gave each teacher a virtual tour binder filled with resources on a flash drive, a gift card to use at OfficeMax, a complimentary pass to visit the Baldwin Home and Wo Hing Museums, and LRF brochures and flyers about the supportive business partners. These materials were placed in handy reusable bags that had been created for the last Lahaina Plantation Days event. The educational excursion is primarily a walking tour led by Carlucci and joined by partners along the way who share their knowledge and passion for their organization’s programs and projects. This year, the tour commenced near Kamehameha Iki Park with education coordinator and

and oversight of the Maui County-funded Lahaina Harbor Front Improvement Projects. The organization also continues to bring historic and cultural sites to life with free programs such as the monthly Hawaiian Music Series concerts at Baldwin Home Museum, and Chinese cultural festivals at Wo Hing Museum. For more information about foundation or how you can contribute and get involved, call the LRF office at 808-661-3262 or go to LahainaRestoration.org. TIN ROOF CHEF SHELDON SIMEON RETURNING TO ‘TOP CHEF’ Rumors have been flying around Maui for months now, but on Oct. 20 Bravo confirmed it: Tin Roof Chef/Owner Sheldon Simeon will once again compete on the culinary reality show Top Chef. He got tantalizing close to victory in Season 10, but now he’ll be one of eight returning “cheftestants” in Season 14. Here’s how Bravo put it in a PR post earlier today: “When Top Chef heads down to Charleston, South Carolina this season, it’ll bring the high-stakes competition and culinary masterpieces with it,” read the Bravo statement. “[B] oth the rookie and the veteran chefs will feel the pressure… It’s easy to see why this season of Top Chef is going to get so heated. That’s because there’s a major grand prize on the line of $125,000 furnished by S.Pellegrino Sparkling Natural Mineral Water, a feature in FOOD & WINE magazine, a showcase at the annual FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen, and the coveted title of Top Chef on the line.” Top Chef Season 14 starts on Thursday, Dec. 1 on Bravo. -Anthony Pignataro ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

For those who can’t get enough of photographer Peter Lik’s stunning photographs of nature in Hawaii, there’s a luxurious new book of his imagery available. Here’s how Lik’s website describes the book, which is titled Hawaii: “After visiting this exotic South Pacific for the first time decades ago, Peter realized he had found exactly what he’d been searchin[g] for–a paradise of lush forestry, clandestine waterfalls, fiery volcanoes, and crystal clear surf,” states the website. “Those initial moments set him on a passionate course of capturing the beauty of the islands year after year. Thousands of shots later, the Artist reveals his latest collection, highlighting a landscape that continues to evolve with every cascading stream of lava and every whispering breeze. Within this portfolio of over 160 newly revealed images, viewers will discover why this stunning archipelago is a true gift of the gods.” The presentation of the 272-page book is extraordinary. There are many dozens of Lik’s famous panoramic photos of various places around Hawaii throughout, organized more or less randomly and without any caption or accompanying text (though notes at the end of the book identify each photo’s location). It’s meant to be thumbed through leisurely–a shot of water exploding on the shoreline leads to a two-page spread of majestic sea cliffs, which leads to a time-lapse shot of a verdant jungle waterfall and so forth. The whole thing is also rather heavy–mostly because the cover is made of 9mm blackboard, and it comes with a magnetic-sealed slipcase. Of course, all this comes at hefty price: $95. What’s more, the book is limited to 250 copies. Lik has been photographing panoramic images of nature for more than three decades. He operates 15 galleries around the world, including one on Front Street in Lahaina. In our 2014 Best of Maui issue, readers gave Lik the Best Gallery award. For more information, go to Lik.com.

navigator Kala Tanaka from Hui O Wa‘a Kaulua, followed by Wainani Kealoha from Maui Nei Native Expeditions at the Moku‘ula Restoration Site. Other stops included the Waiola (Waine‘e) Church and Cemetery, Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, where Richard “Noosh” Nishihara provided a presentation, followed by other sites in the heart of Lahaina. Several local companies donated time and products to help make the tour more enjoyable for the educators. MauiGrown Coffee contributed the morning beverage; Take Home Maui donated a fruit platter for the mid-morning break; and Aloha Mixed Plate donated its ‘ono plate lunches. LRF also provided refreshments. The Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas, a new partner to the program, contributed the air-conditioned comfort of a shuttle driven by employee Wayne English for the non-walking portion of the tour. The bus ride allowed viewing of several additional sites–all leading to the Hale Pa‘i Museum; at the museum, the educators were met by Jackie Hala, a docent from LRF, who demonstrated the use of the printing press. The last stop of the tour was at Hale Pa‘ahao for a relaxed lunch in the shade of Lahaina’s Old Prison yard. Attendees expressed appreciation for their newly acquired information, helping to get their bearings and creating opportunities for their students. “I can offer my students more information about the history of Lahaina by embracing the culture,” one teacher noted. Other teachers added that they enjoyed “locals talking about their history and connection with the land/area” and that “it was a great variety of the components of Lahaina history.” For 54 years, the Foundation has been preserving and managing many of Lahaina’s historic sites and buildings and operates six museums. Current projects of LRF include the expansion of the Plantation Museum at the Wharf Cinema Center and facilitation

In September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noting a recent uptick in cases of “live-poultry-associated salmonella,” repeated its earlier (apparently largely ignored) alert that people should not be kissing chickens (or ducks or turkeys). CDC noted the recent popularity of urban egg farming, but reminded “hipster” farmers and faddish pet patrons that cuddling the animals, or bringing the little darlings into the home (even those that appear clean and friendly), can spread dangerous bacteria for which humans are unprepared.

A recent working paper by two Louisiana State University economists revealed that the state’s juvenile court judges dole out harsher sentences on weeks following a loss by the LSU football team (among those judges who matriculated at LSU). The differences in sentences were particularly stark in those seasons that LSU’s team was nationally ranked. (All sentences from 1996 to 2012 were examined, for firsttime juvenile offenders, except for murder and aggravated-rape cases.)

The NCAA’s two-year probation handed to Georgia Southern University’s football program in July included a note that two football players were given “impermissible” inside help to pass a course. It turns out that even though GSU’s former assistant director of student-athlete services stealthily wrote five extra-credit assignments for each of the players, still, neither player was apparently in good enough shape to pass the course.

AWKWARD A paramedic with the St. Louis Fire Department discovered on Aug. 4 that his car, in the station’s parking lot, had been broken into and was missing various items. Minutes after he filed a police report, the station received an emergency call about a pedestrian hit by a car, and the paramedic and crew rushed to the scene. As he was helping the victim, the paramedic noticed that his own gym bag and belongings were strewn about the scene and concluded that the man he was attending to was likely the man who had broken into his car. The paramedic continued to assist the man, and police told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that they would arrest the man as soon as he was discharged from the hospital.

IMPROBABLE CAUSE Raylon Parker, doing his duty in August on a grand jury in Halifax County, North Carolina, listened to a prosecutor lay out a case, and to Parker’s apparent surprise, the case was against Raylon Parker (for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill).

Still, he voted on the indictment, which passed (though, due to grand jury secrecy, we do not know which way he voted). One possibility: He voted to indict, assuming a judge would toss it out, tainting the prosecutor’s case. However, Parker’s judge said the indictment–signifying “probable cause”–was still valid and that she would not inquire how Parker had voted.

BRIGHT IDEAS Business is booming for Lainey Morse, the owner of No Regrets Farm in Albany, Oregon, and the founder of “Goat Yoga”– an outdoor regimen of relaxation carried out among her wandering goats. “Do you know how hard it is to be sad and depressed when there are baby goats jumping around?” she asked, proudly noting that she is booked up right now, with a waiting list of 500. One problem has surfaced, though (as she told a Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reporter): Naive baby goats try to eat flower designs on yoga mats, leading Morse to permit only mats of solid colors.

WORST SCHEME EVER Wesley Autrey, 42, was arrested by Scranton, Pennsylvania, detectives in September in a drug bust with five bags of heroin and four of cocaine (along with $3,083 cash) and charged with dealing. Autrey (street name, for some reason: “Newphew”) wet his pants during the arrest, which police said he did under the mistaken impression that heroin would dissolve when exposed to urine.

EAU DE TOILETTE Although India’s sacred Ganges River remains ridiculously polluted, it retains holy credibility for Hindus, who consume and bathe in it regularly for salvation. Since reaching the Ganges can be difficult for India’s poor, the country’s postal service (with 155,000 offices) began recently to offer home delivery of the Ganges, in bottles, for the equivalent of about 22 to 37 cents. (Tip: Water bottled in the small town of Gangotri, which is near the origin of the river, is likely cleaner; the other bottler, in the city of Rishikesh, which is holier but located farther down the river, likely presents worshippers a stronger test of faith.)

THIS WEEK IN… WHAT? “Clitoris activism is hot in France right now,” reported London’s The Guardian in August, highlighted by the introduction in school sex education of a 3D model of the organ–demonstrating, by the way, that it more resembles a “wishbone” or a “hightech boomerang” than the “small, sensitive” “bud” of dictionary description. French clitoris scholars emphasize that most of the several-inch-long organ is internal and just as highly excitable as its male counterpart, and their wide-ranging societal campaign includes a magazine whose title translates to “The Idiot’s Guide to the Clit.” ■

deally, an election is more than simply filling in the square next to a party affiliation. It should be about more than simply articulating a person’s privileges or bigotries. It should achieve more than quantifying the effects of propaganda and misinformation. Democracy requires real, meaningful elections, and that means voters need to have information. Not memes, GIFs or even Daily Show monologues that “eviscerate” some tin-plated has-been. Even with the near-pervasiveness of social media, the best sources of authentic election news are still the tried and true news organizations (what us old guys used to call “newspapers”). Though a shadow of what they were even a decade ago, these news organizations still function as valuable gatekeepers that let us know what candidates really do and say. For the following 2016 General Election endorsements, we’ve tried to base our decisions on a mix of our own political leanings and our need for actual, verifiable candidate news and information. The results, as is usual in these cases, don’t fall along any rigid partisan line. The stakes are simply too high this time around– and that goes for the nation as well as Maui County. The election takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Early voting in Hawaii began on Oct. 25. Late voter registration will go until Nov. 5. For more information, go to Elections.hawaii.gov.

She’s an outstanding, outspoken legislator with experience few in Congress these days share. “As one of the few combat veterans to serve in Congress, I bring a unique voice of leadership based on firsthand experience to the decisions that Congress is charged to make with respect to authorizing a declaration of war, when and where our troops are sent into harm’s way, honoring and serving our veterans, and ensuring our military is focused on the safety and security of the American people,” Gabbard said in her 2016 MauiTime election questionnaire. Also, Republican Angela Aulani Kaaihue is a nutty racist who’s already been denounced by–wait for it–the Hawaii Republican Party. Woo!

Sorry, but we just don’t see a clear choice in this matchup between looooongtime Wailuku Democrat (and Speaker of the House!) Joe Souki and Republican Gil Rebolledo. Souki has been in office since 1982, and his working as a lobbyist for the chemical industry while voting against the state’s plastic bag ban a few years ago may not have met the definition of “conflict of interest,” but it certainly showed absurdly poor judgment (legislators shouldn’t be working as lobbyists for any industry, duh). As for Rebolledo, he told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that he opposes greater disclosure for police officer misconduct records. Next!

STATE REPRESENTATIVE Dist 10 Angus McKelvey Even if Republican challenger Chayne Marten (who has twice failed to unseat Democrat Angus McKelvey) hadn’t been

arrested for sexual assault a few weeks ago, we still would be giving McKelvey our endorsement. He’s a good guy and solid legislator.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE Dist 11 No endorsement While we agree politically with Rep. Kaniela Ing, D–South Maui, his inexplicable ignoring of a bench warrant issued in February until MauiTime called him on in July raises serious questions about his judgment. As for his challenger, Republican Danny Pekus, well, no. In his MauiTime election questionnaire, we asked Pekus which legislator he would

model himself after–a simple question, really. Turns out Pekus couldn’t name anyone. “I really do not have a model for my position that I am seeking,” he said. “I am coming from a completely different point of view because I feel that what we have been doing here, and across the nation, has not been working and that is why Americans are so fed up with government as a whole.”

dire need of reform. “OHA is not following the law,” she said. “The fiscal review found that trustees were not following their own fiscal policies and were spending the trust reserves at an alarming rate. There appears to be extensive patronage benefits and huge salaries for the corporate staff (exceeding $125,000.00 per year). This is contrary to the law that says that OHA should have an ‘administrator’ & ‘deputies’ paid at state rates.”

COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER (West Maui) Elle Cochran Yep, another election, another Elle Cochran endorsement. We’ve written about her many times, so no real need

COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER (Kahului) Don Guzman Unless news breaks that Guzman dismembered a nurse or kicked a puppy like a football, we will forever endorse him for reelection because of his strident criticism of Maui County Prosecutor J. D. Kim back in March 2015 during Kim’s reappointment hearing. Kim tried to pros-

STATE REPRESENTATIVE, OFFICE OF Dist 13 HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS Lynn DeCoite At-Large Trustee Sure, why not. We endorsed Democratic challenger Alex Haller in the Primary, but DeCoite works for us. Hell, her vote against the loathsome HB

of the decision on to the ‘aina, the water, air, ocean and most especially, our keiki and our kupuna.”

Haunani Apoliona

Yeah, we know there’s some contradiction in endorsing Trask, who says OHA itself is in bad shape, and Haunani Apoliona, who has been an OHA trustee for 20 years. Too bad. Look, we know OHA politics are inherently complex, but for us, it comes down to this: ApoPHOTO COURTESY ELLE COCHRAN

to go over her qualifications again. She’s one of the only reliable votes against big business/big landowners on the Council, so once again, she gets our support.

liona takes the high incarceration rates for Hawaiians seriously. It’s a horrible problem, built on structural systemic racism. Her challenger, Keli‘i Akina, doesn’t seem to see it that way.

She knows a great deal about affordable housing, and is running (according to a July 26, 2016 Honolulu Star-Advertiser story) because she feels OHA is in

Alika Atay is a soft-spoken, thoughtful guy who wants to sit in the Maui County Council seat currently occupied by termed-out Mike Victorino. Yes, he was one of the plaintiffs in the Shaka Movement’s lawsuit against the County of Maui over that GMO mora-

ecute MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo a few years for photographing police officers on a public street–what we in the news biz call “journalism.” A judge threw out the case, but Kim’s office is appealing the decision. If Guzman thinks Kim has mismanaged the Prosecutor’s Office, then he’s right in our books.

COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER (South Maui) Kelly Takaya King For a few elections now we’ve happily endorsed Don Couch for County Council, but not this year. His recent agreement with Mayor Alan Arakawa’s plan to “suspend” all community plan updates because he believes

of Maui County politics. He doesn’t make a lot of noise, doesn’t get a lot of headlines, but you just feel better with

torium ballot measure (which is still on appeal), but we like him because he has refreshing ideas about what the Council should stand for. “My top priority is community and people first before corporate gains,” he said in his MauiTime election questionnaire. “I believe that the health and welfare of the people in this island community should always be a priority when making community decisions. plan updates. We need councilmembers who trust community plans and agree to uphold them, and Kelly King fits that bill nicely.

Greig Nakasone is intelligent and capable, but lacks Sugimura’s depth of knowledge concerning government and policy.

COUNTY COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER COUNCILMEMBER (Makawao-Haiku-Paia) Trinette Furtado

(Lanai) Gabe Johnson

The fact that Trinette Furtado is running against County Council Chairperson Mike White would normally be enough to secure our endorsement, but in this case, we’d back her for whichever office she was seeking. Yuki Lei Sugimura has more than enough experience to make an effective County Council member. She’s worked for a former mayor (James “Kimo” Apana), the County Council and two U.S. Senators (Mazie Hirono and Daniel Akaka). Napua

This is the first of two state constitution amendments on the ballot. It would increase the threshold value in controversy requirement for a jury trial in a civil case from $5,000 to $10,000. While we know that our courts (like most courts in the U.S.) have a significant backlog of cases, and that this measure might lessen some of that by making it more difficult for people to seek jury trials, the measure would send the unmistakable signal that some people’s rights simply aren’t valuable enough to pursue.

Relating to the Disposition of Excess Revenues YES Ok, this constitutional amendment is a bit complex. Right now, whenever the state runs a budget surplus for two consecutive years, the Legislature has to either return the “excess revenue” to the taxpayers or deposit the money into various funds for emergency use later. If this amendment passes, it would add two more options for the money: paying off debt service for general obligation bonds or pension and other “postemployment benefit liabilities.” While these conditions might not exist every year, it’s probably for the best that the Legislature has more options for excess revenues.

ability at the Maui Police Department, according to a Aug. 31, 2016 Civil Beat story on her. “The Maui Police Department is strong with accountability,” she said. “However, if there

Relating to Withdrawal of Signature from Supplemental Petition YES This charter amendment would “correct clerical errors” and “provide consistency within the Charter by allowing an individual to with-

draw their signature from a supplemental petition.” It’s simple, really. If you have the right to put your name on a petition, you have to right to remove it.

Relating to Review of Supplemental Petition YES This amendment would “allow the County Clerk twenty (20) days to review a supplemental petition, instead of ten (10) days.” Hey, works for us. A lot of hard work goes into crafting these petitions, so why should the Clerk’s office rush their review?

Relating to Emergency Management Agency YES This amendment would change the name of the County’s Civil Defense Agency to the Emergency Management Agency. Um, what? Seriously, we have to vote on this? There’s no proposed charter amendment on the proposed county manager form of government, but we do all get to decide whether to change the sign over the Civil Defense Agency door. Good grief. Sure, we guess.

Relating to Approval of and Qualifications for Various Directors HELL YES This amendment would require the Mayor to get County Council approval for appointments to the Managing Director position as well as the directors of the Finance, Public Works, Planning, Parks & Rec, Housing & Human Concerns, Transportation and Environmental Management departments. Um, duh–have you seen some of the people appointed to be directors in the last few years? The Council already approves of Prosecuting Attorney appointments, so this fits right in. While this amendment falls far short of the proposed county manager form of government (which won’t happen here anytime soon), this still provides much needed reform.

Relating to Office of Council Services’ Attorneys YES This charter amendment would allow attorneys currently working out of the Office of Council Services to provide the County Council with legal advice and research (but not act as legal representation in litigation). Sure, why not. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

'I Cowered In Silence' Or, how our brave film reviewer barely survived watching ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’ ★★★★★ Rated PG-13/ 99 Min.

I

’ve never played with a Ouija board in my life and never will. What surprises me about the Ouija movie franchise, produced by Hasbro, is the grim message of its product. According to these horror movies, if you play the Ouija board game, you or someone you know will probably die. Thanks, but I’ll stick with Operation... or Candyland. An even bigger surprise is that the current prequel, Ouija: Origin of Evil, is a great horror film and vastly superior to its 2014 predecessor. Like Insidious: Chapter 2 and this year’s The Conjuring 2, here is a gore-free, scareheavy, tour de force of genre filmmaking. Twilight franchise survivor Elizabeth Reaser stars as Alice, the single mother of daughters Lina (played by Annalise Basso) and Doris (played by Lulu Wilson). It’s 1967 and Alice’s business as a local medium has fallen on hard times. When Lina brings home a Ouija board, the three are stunned by how it helps their business... though little Doris can’t stop using it to talk to her dead father.

I expected little from Ouija: Origin of Evil and was stunned by the inventive filmmaking, excellent performances and four main characters I genuinely cared about. The original had some effective jolts but was unexceptional, juvenile trash. I enjoyed seeing it in a crowded theater on opening night, as the screams in the audience were livelier than anything on the screen. The sequel, on the other hand, had a grown male shouting “Holy S---!” more than once (and no, that wasn’t me. Like the professional film critic I am, I cowered in silence). How scary is this movie? A way to make yourself immune to these movies while watching them is covering your ears. That way, you can mute the loud soundtrack accompanying cheap jump scares. The thing is, the scares here are jumbo-sized and purely visual. You’d have to cover both your ears and eyes... or just avoid the theater altogether to shield yourself from some truly petrifying imagery. If you hate scary movies, don’t come anywhere near this one. For everyone else, this is one of the best written, acted and produced horror films of the year, if not the decade. Mainstream, PG-13 horror movies, remakes and sequels don’t typically get much

On the bright side, she'll never have to go to the dentist again...

love from hardcore fans and for good reason–most are stupid. Not this one. Initially, it treats the supernatural with total skepticism, builds slowly to the spooky stuff and takes its time before unleashing petrifying imagery. I found the conclusion to be shocking. The final moment before the credits role is one for the books, likely to appear on those Scariest Movie Moments of All Time lists. Look, I see dozens of horror movies every year but this one left me shaking. More importantly, it made me care about its characters and pulled me in with its intriguing story. The least effective moments are the ones where you clearly see the monster, though

the lack of CGI overkill is refreshing. Less so is the use of a Nazi criminal as a subplot, which is tired and in poor taste. Horror fans looking for sensational elements won’t be disappointed but the plot’s center, of a family dealing with loss and suddenly believing in life after death, has real dramatic pull. The secret weapon here is co-writer and director Mike Flanagan, whose 2014 Oculus is similarly exceptional and uniquely scary. His next movie looks to be another whopper: he’s currently directing an adaptation of Stephen King’s lurid and frightening Gerald’s Game (one of King’s most horrifying). Flanagan is early into his career but, if he keeps this up, we may have another John Carpenter on our hands. ■

Desire is a trap. Sometimes you want something so bad you can’t let it go–even when you know letting it go is the only way to get it. The problem is, there are no guarantees. (If there were, it wouldn’t really be letting go, would it?) Here’s where you’ve got to subject yourself to logic-driven tough-love. Look at it this way: desperately hanging on absolutely guarantees you won’t get your wish. Letting go of it means you still probably won’t get it, but you might. There’s only one real option, right? SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Your life’s a wheel. Some people manage to climb to the top and stay there for ages, while others seem to be continually crushed underfoot. You, however, get the best and worst of both worlds. As you ride the wheel through the ether and the mud, you’re privy to a variety of experience that’s the envy of most. Remember that this week, when you’re craving the one thing you have trouble achieving: lasting stability. Some people live boring, safe lives, but, like it or not, that’s not your lot. That might seem unfair now, while you’re under the wheel instead of on top of it, but once you get a chance to think about it, you’ll realize that you really wouldn’t want it any other way. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

It’s not that you Capricorns don’t understand yourselves. It’s that you’re frequently convinced (usually with good reason) that the rest of the world doesn’t understand you at all. Thus you have no idea how to communicate what’s going on inside you–which you actually understand very well–to those it concerns. You’re so convinced they’ll take it the wrong way that you garble it completely–ironically thereby ensuring that they’ll do exactly that. There are, luckily, at least a couple people ready and capable of really getting you. All you have to do is be clear, patient, and open. The rest, if you let it, will take care of itself. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Sometimes you wish you shared that talent for invisibility that some people seem to possess. Because although you’re not as attention-grabbing as some signs, it’s almost impossible for you to escape notice, even when you’d really like to, like this week. Unfortunately, fading into the wallpaper’s simply not an option at the moment, and trying to will just lead to embarrassment and even more attention than if you’d just stepped forward and presented yourself. I guess this week’s keywords would be: “dignity in less-than dignified circumstances.” Aim for that and you can’t go too far wrong.

life of its own, whether we’re talking about a work of art, a kid, or a relationship. You can no longer truly control it; even attempting to do so could kill it. All you can do is hang on. This is a moment to be cherished and celebrated, however, not dreaded. Despite the inherent frustrations (especially if it’s headed in a direction you’re not fond of), independence and freedom are beautiful things. Keep that in mind this week.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Beware invisible peer pressure. For some reason, you imagine what people might think of you, and it keeps you from doing something (or not doing something). Your actions aren’t limited by others’ actual opinions, just your best guesses about what they might be. When people actually try to pressure you into something, you’re remarkably resistant. It’s only your own fears about their judgment that compel you–usually in the wrong direction. Wipe all that speculation from your mind. Doing what you want (or simply what’s right) is what you ought to be doing, regardless of what other people think of it (or what you think they think). CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Thank goodness for that shell of yours. I know at times that emotional wall between you and most of the world (except for the select few you allow inside) is the bane of your existence. But there are other times, like this week, when you’ll be pleased to have it. So what if you lack the thick skin or emotional resilience of a Sagittarian or Gemini? You’ve got a shell. Although in general it’s good practice to keep that thing as wide open as possible, I’d advise against that at the moment. There’s a storm coming. This is a good week to lock up tight and wait it out.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Congratulations, sort of. You’ve won third place in the astrological category Tends Towards Extremes. Naturally, Leos gravitate more often to less specifically self-destructive extremes than the winning signs (Scorpio and Pisces), but that doesn’t mean your own indulgences are exceptionally healthy. In fact one or two of yours aren’t doing you any good at all–especially because you don’t even particularly enjoy them. Quit smoking, already, or having the kind of relationship which makes you feel bad about yourself. Extremes are fascinating, until they’re not. These are making you a less interesting person than you’d be without them. Ditch them.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

The more Fish I get to know, the more I’m convinced you’re actually all just aliens. How else could your point of view be so fundamentally different than most of the rest of ours (and each others’)? A lot of people don’t know just how weird you are, underneath, but some new ones are about to find out this week. Luckily, we’re long past the days of witch-hunts. Most intelligent people are fascinated and respectful of difference. That’s why I urge you this week to flaunt, not attempt to hide (probably in vain) what makes you so weird and unique.

You have good days and bad days. Bu you expect yourself to perform at the top of your game at all times, and you’re unduly harsh when you inevitably fall short once in a while. Cut yourself some slack. When you’re at your best, you blow most of the rest of us away, at least in the Getting Shit Done department. Even on your worst days you’re still more proficient and efficient than your average Pisces. This week may have more supposedly “bad” days than good ones, but that doesn’t mean they have to suck. They’re actually quite likely to be lovely and pleasant–as long as you’re not beating yourself up for not beating your own best records.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Can I just tell you, how sexy you are? It’s purely because of who you are. Your confident, playful energy is likely to be greatly appreciated and sought-after this week. May I suggest working it? You’re not likely to have this many opportunities presented to you, just because of your very nature, for a long time to come. The coolest part is that your adventure-seeking is cumulative: the more doors you open, the more will open for you. Don’t take a chance, though, and you’re not likely to get another one anytime soon. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

If you’ve really put all of yourself into it, there’s a point when whatever you’ve created develops a

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

I’ve met Libras whose scales were seriously out of whack. They’d lost their true selves within a warped assortment of temporarily-assumed personae. Every Libra bears the burden of this risk. You, too, may be teetering on the edge of losing your true self. If that’s the case (or if you’ve already fallen), stop trying to fix the world. Now. It may seem selfish to ignore other people in need while you “search for yourself,” but it’s not, exactly. After all, you can’t lift someone else up unless your own feet are firmly planted on solid ground. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
