Honua'ula today

THE RISE OF HONUA‘ULA AND PULELEHUA

Kapalua Airport, that project was originally supposed to include around a thousand housing units. Even back in 2006, when the project went before the Maui Planning Commission, residents were appalled at the possible approval of such development in an area completely lacking in the necessary infrastructure to support such an increase in population. ““Please do not allow this project to proceed without… a requirement that a school, as well as measures to improve traffic, be in place before any construction can commence,” former Maui Planning Commissioner Louise Ross wrote in a June 1, 2006 letter to the Maui Planning Commission. “You haven’t assessed the impact on West Maui infrastructure,” former Maui Planning Commissioner Dick Mayer warned the commission at a June 19, 2006 hearing. “There are many, many roads that need to be built.”

Halloween is a few days in the past, but here’s a spooky story for you: like zombies rising from the grave, two big Maui development projects that were big about a decade ago but then collapsed of their own weight are coming alive again. Honua‘ula (formerly known as Wailea 670) in South Maui and Pulelehua in West Maui were originally supposed to be up and about these days, with thousands of homes and apartments between them, but lawsuits (the former) and a lousy market (the latter) have kept them confined to the drawing board. But now that seems to be changing, though both projects are now very different from their original proposals. Let’s look at Honua‘ula first. This is a big project that’s been decades in the making. It proposed to put 1,400 housing units, a range of commercial uses and an 18hole golf course (because apparently there aren’t enough of those in South Maui) on 670 acres at the south end of Pi‘ilani Highway. It’s still a big project, but thanks to a lawsuit settlement announced late last week, it’s actually better now. “After more than three years of extensive negotiations, environmental and cultural groups, Sierra Club and Maui Unite, have entered into a settlement agreement with developer Honua‘ula Partners, LLC and the County of Maui,” states an Oct. 28 press release from Sierra Club Hawaii. “The settlement calls for the protection of over 160 acres of land containing ancient Hawaiian villages, boundary markers and site complexes, as well as rare and endangered plants and animals.” The settlement ends a claim Sierra Club Hawaii and Maui Unite filed back in 2012–four years after the Maui County Council approved Honua‘ula–challenging the project’s environmental impact statement (EIS). According to Sierra Club

Hawaii, their settlement shows that initial project archaeological surveys and reports sometimes aren’t as thorough as they should be. “Through their claim, Sierra Club and Maui Unite contended among other things that the developer’s environmental impact statement had failed to adequately address the extent of the cultural and archaeological sites and features located on the property,” states the Sierra Club Hawaii news release. “During the protracted settlement negotiations, the developer agreed to conduct further archaeological work. The archaeologists have confirmed that hundreds of significant archaeological sites or features are located on the property, including ceremonial sites, stepping stone trails, living quarters and farming terraces. Most of these sites are now confirmed for perpetual protection.” The project settlement includes a considerable number of features, including new protections for the “historic Kanaio-Kalama road,” “specific access rights” for cultural practitioners and the public, a smaller-sized golf course, a fence to protect native vegetation from deer, a “conservation easement over the protected lands to be held by the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust,” a 116foot wide buffer between the project and

Maui Meadows, a one-acre public park and a promise to turn over protected areas to as-yet unnamed nonprofit group in the future. The settlement also includes new assurances on all that workforce housing the developers promised to build as part of the project. Given that developers generally hate to put lower income housing (which doesn’t bring in a lot of money) next to luxury homes and condos (which are fabulously lucrative), Honua‘ula developers originally planned to put their 250 units of workforce housing in North Kihei (known as the Kaonoulu site). But the Sierra Club Hawaii/Maui Unite claim stated that the developer didn’t address any impacts from shoving the development over there. According to this settlement, the Honua‘ula developer “may seek to obtain approval from the County Council to amend the original Wailea 670 proj-

Honua'ula tomorrow?

ect district ordinance to permit the affordable housing to be located either at the Kaonoulu site or at the Honua‘ula site, or a combination of both sites.” Workforce housing was also a major component of Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s proposed Pulelehua project in West Maui. Situated on 304 acres around

Well, the roads and school weren’t built, but neither was Pulelehua. The project languished until this summer, when Maui Land & Pine sold the whole thing to Dallas-based USA Infrastructure Investments (USAII, which also owns the Ma‘alaea Shops) for $15 million. On Thursday, Nov. 10, USAII will hold a 6pm public meeting at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort to talk about the rebirth of Pulelehua. According to an Oct. 26 Maui News story, the company plans to build “130 workforce rental apartment units 120 market-rate longterm rental apartment units.” Those numbers pale when compared to Maui Land & Pine’s original project, but given the size of the land in question, future development is all but guaranteed. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

A new video and mapping initiative to disseminate information about mosquitoborne illness has been jointly launched by the Maui District Health Office and the County of Maui. The initiative includes information about the general locations, virus type and lab status of mosquito-borne cases. While there is presently no local spreading of these cases, Maui County is seeing an increase in the number of imported suspect mosquito-borne diseases such as Zika, dengue and chikungunya, according to a statement issued by the Mayor’s Office. In response to this spike in cases, the Maui District Health Office and Maui County Civil Defense have created a system to enhance communication and education regarding mosquito-borne diseases, according to the statement.

Beginning this month, Maui District Health Officer Dr. Lorrin Pang will present a report and educational video on Akaku, which will re-broadcast the video four times a day before Curtain Call. Links to the video and an updated case map will also be available at Mauiready.org/mosquito and Mauicounty.gov. “We used to see several cases of imported suspect cases of mosquito-borne diseases coming into Maui each year,” Pang noted. “Now we’re seeing several of these cases per month.” Anna Foust, Maui County Emergency Management Officer, urged residents to utilize the website, video updates and mapping tool so they can take needed precautions. “Thanks to the Long-Range Division of the County Planning Department, we now have a very useful and customizable map,” Foust said. “This map shows the general locations on Maui that have had active and suspected cases, while

Six Hawaiian green sea turtle hatchlings are the newest members of the Maui Ocean Center ohana. The sea turtles were hatched between Aug. 7 and Aug. 12 at Sea Life Park Hawaii. The six baby honu have now joined the year-old Hawaiian green sea turtles that currently reside in the Turtle Lagoon exhibit. At just over two months old, the pocket-sized hatchlings currently weigh 63-77 grams. After several weeks of being monitored in quarantine by Maui Ocean Center’s curatorial team, the hatchlings are now ready to meet Aquarium guests. Aquarium staff and Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kahu Dane Maxwell welcome Maui’s kama‘aina community and visitors to visit and view the hatchlings at the park; Kahu Dane presided over a blessing of the hatchlings and the Turtle Lagoon exhibit on Nov. 1. The hatchlings will be hosted by Maui Ocean Center for the next two years where they will serve as ambassadors of their species. Hawaiian green sea turtles are classified as a Threatened Species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. The presence of sea turtles and their integration into the Aquarium’s education programs aims to teach guests about Hawaiian green sea turtles, the challenges they face, and what people can do to promote the conservation of Hawaii’s sea turtles. Two hatchlings will be rotated daily from behind the scenes to Turtle Lagoon, allowing guests to see the turtles during park hours. The Aquarium provides guests with a number of educational opportunities and encounters with the turtles, including daily presentations at Turtle Lagoon and bi-weekly “Turtle-rrific Thursday” presentations. Guests also can upgrade their admission to include a Behind-the-Scenes Tour to gain exclusive access to the Aquarium Lab, see the hatchlings up-close, and speak with the team of curators who raise and take care of the sea turtles.

In addition to hiring a new Head Chef, the restaurant is slated to undergo a re-imaged interior design in early 2017. Savella will be at the forefront of the restaurant’s renovation as part of the resort’s ongoing transformation which began this past summer with the completion of brand new Residential Suites, the new Burger Shack beachside restaurant and an enhanced lobby lanai experience.■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit our news blog at: mauifeed.com

News Of The Weird FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE Large kidney stones typically mean eye-watering pain and sudden urinary blockage until the stone “passes” (often requiring expensive sound-wave treatment to break up a large stone). Michigan State University urologist David Wartinger told The Atlantic in September that he had recently happened upon a pain-free–even exciting!–way to pass stones before they become problems: the centripetal force from a roller coaster ride. In a 200-trip experiment preparing for a validating “human” trial, he successfully passed stones in his hand-held, silicone model kidney (using his own urine) about two-thirds of the time when sitting in a rear seat at Disney World’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

females. (Another Galapagos tortoise species did die out in 2012 when the last male, the centenarian Lonesome George, maintained his celibacy until death.)

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS The New York City Council, grilling police officials in September about their practice of freely seizing money from detainees under suspicion, asked for a thorough accounting of that money (suspecting that innocent victims rarely get it back unless aided by high-powered lawyers). Though (in “crime-fighting” hyperbole) NYPD routinely boasts of its half-million annual seizures, an NYPD official told the council it would be “impossible” to account for everything–that keeping track of it all would cause its computers to crash.

THINGS YOU THOUGHT DIDN’T HAPPEN

With about 30 states having adopted some form of “stand your ground” defense to assault (or murder) charges, five membership organizations, charging up to $40 a month, have signed up a halfmillion gun owners concerned that law enforcement treat them fairly should they someday be forced to shoot–providing instructions and a “hot line” to coach members on what to tell police, plus liability insurance and help getting a lawyer. Critics say such organizations are also useful to those who might be prone to shooting people and want advice on how best to get away with it. The U.S. Concealed Carry organization’s wallet-sized card, to give to police, asks that the shooter under suspicion be given the same consideration as the officers might give to their own colleagues under suspicion.

Wanda Witter, 80, had been living on Washington, D.C., streets for 10 years, but insisting to anyone who would listen that the Social Security Administration owed her sums that recently reached $100,000, and that she had documents to prove it. However, given her circumstances, most regarded her as just another luckless person confused by homeless life. In June, though, after social worker Julie Turner took a closer look and found, improbably, that Witter was indeed owed $100,000 and even more improbably, that all of her paperwork was carefully organized among the unimpressive possessions she hauled around daily, SSA paid her $999 on the spot, and the remaining $99,999 arrived in August.

FEEL-GOOD MARKETING

In a dozen YouTube videos recently released, Syria’s Tourism Ministry praised the country’s sandy, fun-filled beaches as ideal vacation spots and its many World Heritage Sites as renowned tourist exhibits–attempting to distract world travelers from the country’s daily bloodshed (and the wartime destruction of those priceless historical sites). Before civil war broke out in 2011, Syria was a fashionable, $8 billion-a-year destination (and the nowdevastated city of Aleppo was known worldwide for its food).

Diego the giant tortoise, believed to be more than 100 years old, now lives in semi-retirement on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos, but from 1976 to 2010, Diego brought an almost-extinct species back to life by fathering about 800 babies in the captive breeding program on Espanola, another of the Galapagos Islands. Biologists did not realize Diego’s prowess until 2010 when DNA tests identified him as the father of 40 percent of all tortoises on the island. Even on Santa Cruz Island, Diego keeps busy, with a “harem” of six

One branch of the James Harper funeral homes, in Bromley, England, announced its latest promotion via a sign in a front window (reported by the Bromley News Shopper in September): “Wow! Free Child’s Battery Powered Vehicle With Every Pre-Paid Funeral Arranged This Month.” A Harper spokesperson said the purpose was to encourage residents to think ahead about funerals.

RECURRING THEMES The most recent immigrant family living high on the hog in the United Kingdom is Arnold Mballe Sube and his wife, Jeanne, both 33, who drew the equivalent of about $130,000 in government benefits last year, but are still feuding with the Luton Borough Council near London over its inability to find (free) housing adequate for them and their eight children. They turned down four- and five-bedroom homes, were housed temporarily in a Hilton hotel, and said they would be satisfied only with a sixbedroom residence. Mr. Sube, from Cameroon, emigrated to France at age 18, then came to England in 2012 to study nursing at the University of Bedfordshire. ■

COMICS COSPLAY

AND THE CANNERY MALL BY BARRY WURST II

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE FIRST-EVER MAUI COMIC CON

T

he first ever comic book convention (or “comic con”) of note took place in California. The year was 1970 and those present said it was like a church bake sale, with burly dudes sitting around card tables, selling stacks of comic books, while a few notable artists were present. It took a few decades but the event would eventually become the annual San Diego Comic Con that it is today. The four-day event typically features celebrity appearances, showcases for everything big in movies and TV, artist showcases and dozens and dozens of comic book and entertainment merchandise. Since its breakthrough as a mass-media bonanza, variations of the event have sprouted everywhere. New York and even Oahu have their version. Now, Maui finally has its own, too. The event, which opens at the Lahaina Cannery on Saturday, Nov. 5, includes an artist’s alley, cosplay contests, face paintings, special guests and events for fans of comics, movies and cartoon shows. Like any good origin story, it begins in a place of discovery and wonder, lorded over by a wise sage who loves fantastic tales. A lot will happen at Maui Comic Con, but have no fear: Here’s our rundown on a few of the biggest names appearing at the convention. First up, I spoke with Alika Seki, the owner of Maui Comics and Collectibles and the mastermind behind Maui Comic Con. He looked exhausted but determined in his daily efforts to balance producing the event and run his Kahului comic book shop. He told me how the event was shaping up and the very Maui way he landed the event’s biggest guest of honor, artist Steve Leialoha. MAUITIME: When did the idea for Maui Comic Con first come up? ALIKA SEKI: I had been envisioning it for as long as I’ve had a comic book store on Maui. What it looks like is a smaller scale version of what I initially envisioned. I’m working with Ken Gardner, he’s the impetus for starting it. He approached the venue, he envisioned a small scale comic con in Lahaina cannery. He was thinking, maybe one guest artist, one panel. He asked me to help him put it together. My planning goes way back and larger in scale. I took the research I had done and put it into this convention. MT: Why has it taken Maui so long to get a Comic Con? AS: I think it has to do with what Maui is. Oahu is knee-deep in cons, Big Island had a collector’s convention–due to a passionate community. There was a big void here for 10 years. There wasn’t a place for collectors to congregate. All it takes is community members to see each other and connect. It’s easy to feel alone unless you have a social space. MT: What do you hope to accomplish? AS: The main goal is to bring out the community and see how big it really is, to give them a show. Maui gets bypassed with a lot of things, but it’s such a destination. We just need a net to show that the people here are craving the same thing as everyone else. People on Maui always feel they have to travel to see things. I want a local

10 NOVEMBER 3, 2016

flavor to highlight as much local talent as possible. I want to put a light on Maui’s local and artistic community and that they are there to support each other. MT: If this goes as well as you hope, are there plans to make this annual? AS: Oh, we already have those plans. We hope to do this every year. MT: What has your approach been to putting this together? AS: My career in comics has been meeting those who shatter my expectations. I don’t wanna be all business. My mentor, Bruce Ellsworth, taught me you don’t have to be a jerk. My moment was seeing the local community from other islands attending a con. Iit showed me there’s enough demand for it to happen on any island. MT: Who was the first artist you reached out to? AS: James Silvani. Then I saw DJ’s Facebook post that he knew Steve Leialoha. He’s so accessible to the people of Maui.

I

nstrumental to Seki’s connecting with Steve Leaialoha is comic book artist DJ Keawekane, who was signing comics at Seki’s shop when I spoke with him. “I went to my wife’s family reunion,” says Keawekane, “and I see this kid with a Spider-Man drawing. I ask this kid, ‘Wow, who did that?’ He points and says, ‘Uncle Steve!’ I see this tall guy with a beard… it’s Steve!” Keawekane is the author of Exhillion, a comic book he describes as “X-Men meets Lord of the Rings.” The rich illustrations on the covers convey this connection. “I got three issues right now,” says Keawekane, “and I hope to get the fourth one out before Amazing Con. I have a lot of time– I’ll get it out there.” Keawekane’s story of how he got into the form is especially unique. “I was a kid who was always drawing in class,” he says. “I always wanted to draw and always getting in trouble. When I was 18, I asked someone, ‘How do you get into this stuff?’ They said, ‘You gotta move to New York.’ I stopped and did regular work, had fun after graduating. I got into an accident at 25, broke my back. I was bored because I was in rehab and took a year off. My mom brought me my sketchbook and said, ‘Try drawing.’ I channeled all of these ideas. I went to school, my wife introduced me to the internet, I discovered digital webbing. I created digital comics, did small comics here and there. Now, I’m doing my own thing.” Keawekane says his mother continues to be a major supporter. “My mom loves my comics,” he says. “She’s my biggest fan. If you’re friends with me on Facebook, you’ll see my mom jump into the conversation, like ‘Well, he’s also good at THAT!’”

s for Steve Leialoha, his awardwinning career as an inker and penciler for varying Marvel, DC and independent titles has made him an industry legend. He’s worked on Fables, Howard the Duck, Batman, Hitchhiker’s Guide

to the Galaxy, G.I. Joe, Uncanny X-Men and others. He’s also pretty easy to talk to. MAUITIME: When you drew for Fables, did you know you were working on a classic or did the response take you by surprise? STEVE LEIALOHA: Fables sounded like a great idea from the beginning, but you can never really tell. MT: I’m a huge Howard the Duck fan. Was there freedom in working on something so bizarre or does that present more of a challenge for an artist? SL: The challenge is always to do the best work possible but Howard the Duck was so odd that we could do almost anything, which did keep it fun! Marvel was a bit more casual in those days.

qualities in Robert Crumb’s work. Do you feel there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed, regarding sexuality and violence, in comic books? TR: Obviously, we have freedom of speech and freedom of the press in this fair country and I hope it stays that way, so we are simply talking about good taste.Yes, a person can depict rape, torture, dismemberment and murder of women, but it isn’t funny, and it’s, as you say, tasteless. Whereas I certainly don’t believe that looking at and reading such stuff is likely to turn anyone into a rapist or murderer, I do believe that looking at stuff like that tends to desensitize the reader to the point where he or she may not be horrified by the terrible things that really do happen to women–and men–in real life, and may be in danger of losing compassion.

includes The Adventures of the Gummi Bears and Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers. MAUITIME: First of all, thank you for your work on The Adventures of the Gummi Bears. TAD STONES: Thanks, although the show was created by Jymn Magon and Art Vitello. I only story edited/produced the third season. I always preferred the 22-minute episodes that told bigger adventures. MT: Please tell me about your first experience at Disney, working on The Rescuers. TS: The Rescuers was underway when I survived the training program so I became an Inbetweener, a job I was terrible at. I remember in-betweening the scales on the back of two alligators animated by Dale Baer as they swam

MT: Your list of credits touches on every comic book I collect, have read and continue to revisit: Dead Boy Detectives, Batman, Secret Wars II, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, G.I. Joe, Uncanny X-Men. Do you have a favorite character to render?

A

nother towering figure in the comic book world attending Maui Comic Con is Trina Robbins. She’s a major figure in the “underground comix” and her Wimmen’s Comix issue # 1 is noted for featuring the first-ever openly lesbian character. She’s written essential works on the role of women in comics, is a noted writer/ artist on DC’s Wonder Woman series and is said to be referenced in Joni Mitchell’s Ladies of the Canyon. (In researching Robbins’ work to prepare for our interview, I came across a detail that made me smile: her partner is none other than Steve Leialoha.) MAUITIME: Your books provide a definitive look at the historical presence of women in comic books. We always tend to gravitate towards Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, etc. Are there female comic characters that you feel have been vastly overlooked and deserve more attention? TRINA ROBBINS: Miss Fury preceded Wonder Woman by eight months and was written and drawn by a woman, Tarpe Mills. I have collected the entire 10-year run of the strip into two volumes, and it reads like film noir. Although she had no superpowers, Miss Fury was a beautiful society woman, Marla Drake, who donned a panther skin disguise to have some great adventures fighting Nazis and, later, some pretty mean gangsters. Like all of the best comic heroines, she could take care of herself, and could be pretty tough when she had to be. She had a white Persian cat who just happened to look like and have the same name as creator Tarpe Mills’ cat, Perri Purr, and the cat was no slouch, either. Once, when Marla was held at gunpoint by a particularly bad guy, Perri Purr jumped on the man’s head, claws out, saving his mistress. MT: I’m intrigued by your refreshing comments about the tasteless

TR: It’s hard to be empowered when one’s breasts are so large and waist so tiny that in real life one might break in half or simply fall flat on one’s face, especially if one is also attempting to run in six-inch heels. MT: Are you optimistic about the upcoming Wonder Woman movie? TR: Yes! I think Gal Gadot makes a perfect Wonder Woman, and I’m eager to see the movie!

F

ans of Drake Mallard, the mysterious, caped crime fighter who goes by the alias Darkwing Duck, are in for a treat at Maui Comic Con. The Disney character, who starred in both after school and Saturday morning cartoons as well as spin-off comic books, is celebrating a 25th birthday. Present at Maui Comic Con will be the show’s creator, Tad Stones, and James Silvani, an artist on the Darkwing Duck comic book series. I spoke first with Stones, whose prolific career

S

ilvani, who lives in Hawaii and works as a cartoonist and illustrator, also took time to answer my Disney-flavored questions. MAUITIME: Who are the artists who inspired you?

MT: When you’re working with established characters, like Star Wars or other Disney characters, how much freedom do you have to make personal interpretations?

Steve Leialoha

MT: Many have noted that female comic book characters tend to be scantily attired, hyper-sexualized, etc. Some have argued these figures exude confidence and female empowerment. What are your thoughts?

TS: I can only say that the guys creating the new Ducktales series are huge Darkwing Duck fans and leave it at that. I love what they’re doing so I advise recording all the episodes when they air next year! It’s a new continuity which captures the spirit of all the shows a brings them into this century. Very, very funny people are involved.

JAMES SILVANI: By the time I could actually pick up comics on my own to read, my older brother had moved out but left me behind all his comics. The first ones I were drawn to were the Carl Barks’ Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck comics. They were these amazing adventures done with funny animals. Those books showed me all about storytelling. I was also a huge fan of Silver Age artist John Severin. He started off as an artist on western and war comics but I came to know him through his brilliant art on Cracked Magazine movie parodies. I think 90 percent of my humor can be traced back to his artistic sensibilities. My only other artistic influences came from the dying form of newspaper comics. I feel very privileged to have grown up in a time where I could read and draw inspiration from such greats as Peanuts, Calvin & Hobbes and Bloom County on a daily basis.

SL: I’ve been pretty lucky in being able to work on projects I really like, and over the years that’s been most of the characters at DC and Marvel. My favorite is usually whatever I’m working on at the moment (some Polynesian-themed things).

MT: Now that Darkwing Duck lives on in comic book form, are there further plans, in film or gaming form, to expand the narrative of the character?

away. I went home with a headache every day and had trouble keeping the lines from bouncing around. In the final film, they swam into the fog! I did animate one scene of just Bernard mouse tip-toeing across a desk and turning to look up at a clock. But I realized I’d rather work in story. At the time, Penny and Medusa did not have a real personality scene together. I pitched something that was deemed too harsh. However, Vance Gerry, a top story artist, took the kernel of the idea and created the sequence where they talk as Medusa takes off her makeup. Basically, my contribution was bringing up the notion that they should have a scene together. After that, it was all Vance. MT: What kind of hours did you put in while Darkwing Duck was on the air? TS: My hours on Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers got out of hand. I was working seven days a week, about 13 hours Monday through Friday, eight on Saturday and four on Sunday, my “day off.” I was thanked by being pulled off the show toward the end. Darkwing was more sane. I don’t think I put in a lot of weekends but my days probably averaged around 10 hours. The show was more fun and I had a lot more help in the form of additional story editors.

JS: Disney characters don’t really offer a lot of room for interpretation, at least in the comics. I’m fine with that as I try and keep them as on model as possible. I never really liked stylized comics of licensed characters myself. On the Star Wars end, I have a little more freedom. Lucasfilm is very encouraging, as far as fine art interpretations of their properties. I’ve done fine art for Star Wars in everything from rock poster style silk screens to Little Golden Book-style paintings. MT: I notice you tour the con circuit a lot. What are your favorite parts of conventions, and what can be some of the pitfalls from an artist’s perspective? JS: My favorite part of cons is to hang out with my peers in the comics industry. I love living on Maui but it gives me little opportunity to hang out the pros that are doing such exciting things in the business today. The downside to doing the cons is all the travel puts me behind on getting the books I draw out on a timely basis. Plus, I make it a point not to sell prints of any kind at my tables. Only original art. All those originals take a lot of prep time.

Maui Comic Con takes place Nov. 5-6 at the Lahaina Cannery Mall. The event starts at 10am on both days and is free. For more info, go to Mauicomiccon.com. ■ editor@mauitime.com For more A&E articles, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

Jucy Journey OR, HOW THIS HAWAII RESIDENT HACKED A MAINLAND ROAD TRIP co and Los Angeles in California, and Las Vegas in Nevada. All three branches opened in 2012, and today they have a fleet of about 300 campervans. Most of their US vehicles are Dodge Caravans, but they told me some of their early models were also Chrysler Town & Country. “Jucy started in 2001 in Auckland, New Zealand with a fleet of just 35 rental cars,” says Palin. “The Australian operation start-

Both Escape and Jucy are New Zealand companies that have started USA subsidiaries. “New Zealand has a huge culture of road travel,” says Alina Palin, a Jucy spokesperson. “Because New Zealand is so small and domestic flights are relatively expensive, many New Zealanders choose to travel

One thing that’s different in New Zealand is that we typically do lots of weekend road trips–taking advantages of the shorter distances to drive and often going away most weekends in summer.” Jucy has three US branches, San Francis-

ed in 2008. The company was started by brothers Tim and Dan Alpe who still head the company as the CEO and COO. The New Zealand and Australia Jucy have a few different kinds of campervans available. mileage with driving a smaller car will be eaten up by hotel fees, but if you’re not into camping, this is your best solution. But if you’re willing to camp it up, there are a lot more options. An online company called RV Share works like an Airbnb of RV’s, hooking up people willing to let you borrow their rigs for a price. If you wanted a luxury RV, or even just a pop-up tent trailer, they have so many different sizes and styles to suit the RV-savvy. Then there’s Cruiseamerica.com. I saw these rigs all over the road, and they offer three-, five- and seven-person options for RV’s. For an even more affordable option, I discovered “campervans” that you can rent. There are two companies offering these in the US. One is Escape Campervans–they of-

he heartbeat of America throbbed under my foot as I stepped on the gas pedal and sped up to 90 miles an hour on Interstate 10. For someone who grew up on an island, road-tripping is one of my favorite ways to travel in the US. It just feels very American to me. It’s one of the easiest ways to get up close and personal with local culture. My recent interstate drive from Los Angeles to Galveston, Texas with my husband and daughter was no exception. If you think camping along highways in the contiguous states is out of reach for Hawaii, here is my guide to making it a cinch. There are a couple of ways you can go. One is rent a car and sleep at motels and hotels along the way. What you save in gas

The Dodge Caravan has been souped up to carry all of its retro-fitted gear, it had plenty of power and the A/C was cold. Other things you may need to add is the early pick-up option ($50) or late dropoff ($50), depending on your flights. Jucy opens at 9am but pick-up time is between 1-3pm. Weekend pickup and drop off hours vary. You can drop your vehicle off when they’re closed–they have a key drop slot to accommodate that. Also, when you book your campervan, a $200 deposit is required. This is taken off your bill when you pick up. I added unlimited milage because I was covering around 3,900 miles. Jucy offers different mileage packages so be sure to check your distances. When you pick up your campervan, you have to decide on insurance. I’m covered for rentals by my car insurance, so I declined their extra insurances, though they still require a $1,500 bond held on your credit card. When you return the car, the

Escape only offers this as an option. The Jucy Campervan has two beds: one on the top and one inside the van. Both set up easily and slept the three of us comfortably. Both companies have lots of add ons for their campervan rentals. This is key when you’re flying in from Hawaii with luggage restrictions. You don’t want to haul all of your camping gear or kitchen stuff. For my Jucy rental, I added the kitchen kit ($115) that had pots and pans, cups, plates, silverware and cooking utensils, a four-pack of butane gas cans ($15), solar shower ($20) and bedding and towels for three ($100). Since I was concerned about

30 degree evening temperatures in the high desert, we also got the winter packs that included a sub-zero sleeping bag, thermos and hand-warmers for $30 each per person ($90). It’s tedious but after you get your camper van, I recommend going through the kits and unpacking the bedding to make sure you have the right numbers. We had three people, and (initially) they only gave us bedding for two, even though we had paid for four (you have to rent it in twos). If I did it all again, I might not get the solar shower. I didn’t use it as most of the campsites we visited at had showers. Also, we had way too much butane for our cooking–we never finished the first bottle. So buying the extra was overkill, unless you’re going to do a lot of cooking. Everything else was super smooth. The Jucy comes equipped with a fridge drawer in the kitchen area. I wasn’t sure how robust it would be so I brought one of my collapsible ice chests, though I didn’t need to. The fridge worked great, and was big enough for what I needed.

bond is returned to you, as long as there’s no damage. Jucy charges the whole rental (minus your deposit) the day you pick up. I booked a few of the campgrounds I wanted to visit ahead of time, like Mather’s campground in Grand Canyon National Park, which can sell out. Otherwise, I booked a lot of them the same day I was driving. I used the iPhone app called AllStays Camp and Tent to find campgrounds (this app has an RV campgrounds app, too). Since the campervan is not an RV and doesn’t need hook-ups, for most campgrounds you’re considered a tent camper. A lot of the campgrounds have provisions for campers coming in after hours which is great when you want to cover some miles at night. For navigation I used the Waze app as well as Google and Apple maps. Zellee! A TASTY FRUIT GEL SNACK JUST LAUNCHED ON MAUI

Eriko Dowd, Founder of Zellee

W

hen I first heard of Zellee I was like, Zee what? My daughter was at the market with me, insisting we buy Zellees. She described them as fruit gel in a pouch, so we asked someone to help us find them but we weren’t successful. After more research I realized that Zellees are a product idea launched here on Maui by Eriko Dowd. She wanted to make a snack food, and based it on her own homemade Japanese fruit gel recipes. “Most health-conscious consumers don’t eat any Jell-o products because they are typically loaded with sugar and artificial ingredients, says Dowd. “Having grown up eating my mom’s homemade fruit gels (which is the generic name for Jell-o), I’m a big fan of healthy fruit gels and wanted to share my love for fruit gels with the natural and organic market. We exhibited at Natural Product Expo West in Anaheim in March, and we got really amazing feedback from a diverse group of attendees. You probably won’t find Zellee in the big supermarkets yet, but Mana, Down to Earth, Alive & Well, Rodeo General Store, Maui Country Club and Whole Foods Market carry them. They come in three flavors: strawberry, pear and blueberry/grape, and a newly tweaked formula for orange/peach. My daughter loves the strawberry and grape varieties, and I like them all. My favorite part about Zellee is that

it’s organic, gluten-free and vegan. It’s a 60-calorie snack that I can pack in my kid’s lunch guilt-free. Dowd says she experimented quite a bit to get the formula down for mass production. She tried all kinds of gelling agents, but what ended up working the best is Konjac root. You don’t hear of it much, but I like it because it’s a vegan product that gives the gel body without any aftertaste. Zellees don’t have any added sugar–it’s the fruit purees that provide the sweetness. The result is a short list of pretty recognizable ingredients. The only thing added is organic acerola for additional Vitamin C. They come in a pouch, and no silverware is needed to consume them. Dowd says they are shelf-stable and don’t require refrigeration, but they taste better cold so most stores have them in their grab-and-go section. Dowd added that Konjac root is used as a kind of diet food in Asia, where it can fill you up without adding a lot of calories–another reason to add it to my repertoire of snacks. The sweet organic gel is refreshing, tasty and travels well, and just launched in California markets, too. â–

'Inferno' The only puzzle in this Ron Howard film is why it was made ★★★★★ Rated PG-13/ 121 Min.

T

here are two things that the opening credits of Ron Howard’s Inferno tell us immediately about this third Dan Brown novel adaptation: this is a movie that takes itself very seriously and isn’t going to be any fun at all. We’re introduced to Bertrand Zobrist, a billionaire guru (played by a one-note Ben Foster) who explains to a captivated audience that the world is overpopulated and in need of cleansing. Not long after this charming declaration, Zobrist leaps to his death. Meanwhile, a nurse (Felicity Jones) takes in a wounded Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), who is suffering from amnesia and a rotation of chaotically filmed hallucinations. Jones brings so much grit and intrigue to her character that she manages to finally give her co-star a worthy accomplice for Langdon (my apologies to Audrey Tautou and Ayelet Zurer, the former Langdon Girls). Her performance is the best thing about this unconvincing dud. Hanks is one of my favorite movie stars and seems as genuine and charming in real

life as he does on screen.Yet, he’s not an actor who can vanish into any role he plays. When he’s the wrong man for the job, the strain shows and it’s in plain view from start to finish of Inferno. Brown’s described Langdon in the opening pages of The Da Vinci Code as “Harrison Ford in tweed.” Ford could have done this movie with one hand tied behind his back. Seeing Hanks wake up in a hospital bed, frantic and ready to take action, is unconvincing. Then again, most of Inferno is either too confusing or reliant on incidents that are hard to swallow. I tend to give movies like this a break when it comes to being “realistic” but this one kept cornering me into accepting impossibilities even Ethan Hunt couldn’t pull off. If someone can tell me how Langdon achieves that Houdini-like reverse-thievery in the final scene, I’ll buy you a Blu-ray of National Treasure: Book of Secrets, a better version of this movie. Although the first two Robert Langdon thrillers dealt with religion, this one goes in a different direction. The topic isn’t religious faith but fanaticism and acts of terrorism. The immediacy of the story should be jolting but it never gels. Langdon’s dreams include

The whole movie is just these two people trying to catch a bus in Italy

campy sights like a snake and a syringe suddenly appearing in someone’s neck. Hanz Zimmer’s theme to The Da Vinci Code is one of the most gorgeous of modern movie compositions and it’s a pleasure hearing it again over the end credits. Unfortunately, the rest of his score is uninspired and overly frenzied. The same goes for the editing, which hurts the film right out of the starting gate. The quick cuts, shaky camera and CGI-enhanced fuzziness seems to have been implemented to keep Langdon’s ghastly visions blurry and the film’s PG-13 rating intact. The same goes for the action sequences, which are never properly staged or paced. Once we get to the big climax, it comes across like a random assembly of shots where actors are running down pathways. Although

the whole world is in jeopardy, it feels like very little is at stake. Inferno is easily the darkest and most violent of the three Langdon films and this poses a problem for Howard. The director of Cocoon and A Beautiful Mind has never been especially good at getting edgy (his The Missing and Ransom were especially strained attempts). He’s far better at delivering nail-biting action sequences and maintaining suspense. Any of the best scenes from Howard’s Backdraft, Rush, Willow or Far And Away outshine every intended action set-piece from this (and every other Langdon movie, for that matter). I’m sorry, Opie. I typically love your work but these Dan Brown movies just aren’t your thing. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Of all the signs, young Scorpios have the hardest time bouncing back from humiliation. Everyone experiences some mortifyingly embarrassing situation at some point in their lifetime, but you Scorps, who do tend to take yourselves a bit too seriously sometimes, require a much longer recovery period than most. This probably seems very much like a weakness, but like all frailties, it can also be a strength. How does this hidden asset make itself manifest? Compassion. When comforting the fallen and disturbed this week, remember the times when you were more or less where they are now. Then you’ll know exactly what to do.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

I’ve met Taurens who love camping. In fact, communing with nature is right up your alley–only many of you don’t know it yet. It’s definitely, for you Bulls at least, an acquired taste. You may think of yourself as a totally urban creature, but that’s because you haven’t properly discovered the sensual beauty and serenity only available to you far away from the dirty hubbub of humanity. You need to connect with your animal nature, and the sooner the better. Find a way to cope with the inconveniences outside of your old comfort zone, and you may just discover a newer, bigger, better one. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

You teenage rebel. Part of you will never outgrow that spirited need for absolute independence, no matter how old you get. Avoid anyone who demands that you suppress it. Calls to “grow up” and “settle down” shouldn’t be simply ignored, but utterly repudiated. You’ll settle down naturally when it’s the right time–chances are a decade or two after most people get to this stuff. Find someone who doesn’t want you to fit into some mold, because that’s something you’re simply not capable of (despite occasional temporary delusions to the contrary). Better yet, find someone who’ll rebel with you. Then there’ll be no end to your adventures. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You sure know how to haggle. Anyone who pays the asking price for their car, house, or even a cheap shirt at a flea market is, in your opinion, just a fool. Finessing the price downward is part of the game; the problem is you can sometimes get carried away and start wrangling and quibbling in situations where it’s not appropriate; consequently the “price” (whatever it is) goes up, rather than down. Be careful where you bargain-hunt this week, as the opportunities to get a real deal are actually few and far between, surrounded by mostly inflexible situations where you’ll get only what you “pay” for. Trying to negotiate anyway will only get you kicked out of the shop, and the game. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

It’s no fun to feel like you’re annoying and unpleasant to be around. To your credit, you’ve really taken some people’s reactions to heart and wondered if you’re that awful. But never fear; although you’re not perfect, of course, the problem here is that the person you’re taking your cues from is simply too sensitive. While I wouldn’t prescribe taking your leave of them entirely, a break might be in order. Your confidence took a beating over the holidays. Don’t tax it too much by forcing yourself to endure heaps of criticism. Give it a holiday by mixing it up with people who enjoy you through and through. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

You can’t keep from getting hurt. This is a lesson most Fish learn early on. Unfortunately, many of you adopt prophylactic coping strategies–dulling the pain before it even occurs–with food, drugs, alcohol, religion, avoidance, or a myriad other bad habits. These are okay as temporary measures, but not too healthy, ultimately. Luckily, this week you can practice forgoing your crutches altogether, because you’ve got easy comfort on hand–the adult equivalent of Mommy kissing it and making it all better–so there’s no reason to fear or try to avoid pain. Relief is right at hand. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Hook up with your fellow fire signs (other Aries, Leos, and Sagittarians) this week. You need the recharge– and so do they. It’s exhausting to constantly endure the dampening influence of water signs. Take a break from hypersensitive Piscean buddies, or picky Cancer companions. It’s not their fault, but they just don’t revel in you and your wild ways, not like those ever-enthusiastic Leos do. Luckily, though they’re low on unhinged zeal, they’ve got tons of something else: patience. In other words, go do what you’ve got to do. They’ll wait.

I almost burned my kitchen down this morning, simply because I’ve been too lazy to buy a new toaster. You’ve put yourself in a similarly precarious situation. The slightest of precautions on your part could avert a world of trouble, but you’ve managed to skip that step for ages now. A new toaster could keep my possessions from turning into ash. A comparable preventative measure on your part, one just as easy as shelling out 10 bucks for a counter appliance, could save your ass, too. You know exactly what simple safeguard I’m talking about. This week, take care of it.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

November’s likely to be a very surreal ride for you Cancers. You couldn’t call it especially bad or good. In fact, I’d be surprised if you could categorize it at all. But “normal” is likely to take on a whole new meaning, and expecting anything would be a mistake. This is surely a test of some of the newfound flexibility and adaptability you acquired this year. You’ve already passed some simple hurdles: making lemonade out of lemons, though, was easy. What’ll you do when life hands you children in need, or burning houses, or starving cats? LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

How much longer will you make excuses, Leo? Shit like, “I can’t write my novel until I get the right computer,” and “I’m just waiting until after this busy period at work to fix my relationship,” won’t cut it anymore, at least not with those of us who give a shit and have brains. You deserve better. Your ego requires it. You can’t be the fabulous star you want to be just because you’re charming and well-dressed, at least not this week. You’ve got to actually do something. It’s time to put aside all the things you tell yourself are reasons not to get shit done, and just get shit done.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Standing in the path of a speeding train goes against all your best instincts and logic. But what if you knew that that train was about to derail? What if you also suspected that you might have the power to stop it, instead of simply being crushed and killed? You’d consider taking that risk then. In fact, I’d have a hard time believing that you wouldn’t give it a go, even if it meant potential death. Luckily, the kinds of sacrifices likely to be demanded of you this week won’t be so dramatic and final. But neither will they be easy. However, as you consider them, remember my runaway train scenario and this question: what’s what you may have to give up, when weighed against all that you might save?

CLASSIC ROCK

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Can’t make up your mind? Are you bewildered by a lack of direction, or even clear signs about what options are on offer? There’s only one escape from that limbo: Avoid mediocrity like the plague. It’s time to hazard your precious, precarious balance. Instead of adding feathers to either end of the scale, thus never risking your now slightly stagnant equilibrium, try adding ten-ton weights to each side. Stop making excuses and try it, already. Not only will you and your life become vastly more interesting, but you’ll know, quite quickly and clearly, which way you want to head and what you want to do when you get there.
