bers clearly don’t mesh with state trends. While disturbing, even those stats pale before national crime numbers, according to University of Hawaii social sciences Professor Meda Chesney-Lind, who has been studying Hawaii crime for decades. “Overall, crime in Hawaii is pretty much down,” Chesney-Lind told me a few weeks after the Maui PD crime stats came out. “But Maui has a lot of tourists on island at any given time. The most controversial report I ever did was on tourism and crime. Typically, we have a very low violent crime rate compared to national crime rates, and a very high property crime rate.”

NEW HAWAII AND MAUI CRIME STATS ARE OUT

Because bad news typically breaks on a Friday, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the state Attorney General’s office decided to release its 2015 Crime in Hawaii report on Friday, Dec. 2. First, the good news: “Hawaii’s total Index Crime rate in 2015 was 0.3% below the rate reported in 2014, and 24.7% below the rate reported a decade earlier (2006).” Yay, right? Overall crime in the state dropped a tiny percentage from 2014 to 2015, but a whole lot over the last decade. That is good. Unfortunately, it’s an overall state trend–crime in individual counties (like good ol’ Maui County) doesn’t necessarily have to reflect it. And it doesn’t, which brings us to the bad news in the 2015 report: “The total Index Crime rate in Maui County increased 2.3% in 2015; the violent crime rate rose 7.6%, and the property crime rate edged up 1.8%,” states the report. “Maui County’s crime rates increased for six of the ten Index Crime offenses, with a notable increase of 86.4% for arson. Maui County reported the highest statewide rates for total, violent, and property Index Crimes, as well as rape, aggravated assault, and larceny-theft.” Whoa, whoa! Total crime in Maui County is up, and violent crime is up way more than property crime? If you think that’s bad, just remember that these aren’t new trends around here. Here’s what the 2014 Crime in Hawaii report said about Maui County: “The total Index Crime rate in Maui County increased 0.9% in 2014; the violent crime rate rose 11.3%, and the property crime rate edged up 0.1%,” stated the 2014 state crime report. “Maui County reported the highest statewide rates for total Index Crimes, total violent crime, total property crime, murder, rape per the revised definition, aggravated assault, larceny-theft, and arson.” Maui Police Department crime states quietly released back in early August confirm these numbers. An MPD powerpoint presentation titled “Maui

County Crime Overview” and dated Aug. 2, 2016 shows a steady increase in the county’s violent crime index from 2011 through 2015. More alarming, the MPD stats show a considerable jump in the numbers of aggravated assault and rape in Maui County. But at least as far as the figures on rape are concerned, much of that increase may be due to a change in the definition of “rape” mandated by the FBI in 2013 (neither Mary Greer-Prince, who compiled the Maui PD’s crime stats, nor the department’s public information officer responded to repeated requests for comment on these stats). “In 2013, in addition to removing the word ‘forcible,’ the FBI also approved revisions to the UCR [Uniform Crime Reporting] Program’s definition of rape,” states the 2014 Crime in Hawaii report. “The revised definition of rape is the penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim. This revised definition encompasses all genders as victims of rape and also includes the offenses of sodomy, and sexual assaults with an object, which were previously reported to the FBI only as arrests in the other sex offenses category. The old definition, which will be referred to as the legacy definition throughout this report, is defined as the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. The State of Hawaii commenced the collection of rape data per the revised definition on January 1, 2014.” In any case, Maui County’s crime num-

sunrise viewing hold approximately 150 vehicles,” states a Nov. 28 news release from the park. “Vehicles regularly exceed 300 per sunrise. When vehicles outnumber parking spaces, visitors park on road shoulders or in the upbound lane of Crater Road. The cars block emergency vehicle access and damage park infrastructure, vegetation, and critical habitat for endangered species such as the Hawaiian petrel and Haleakala silversword. Crowds at sunrise viewpoints often number over 1,000, with accidents resulting from visitors moving off trail and climbing cliff sides in the dark.” Earlier this week, Haleakala National Park officials announced radical changes to way people watch the sunrise at the summit– specifically, sunrise viewing reservations. “Beginning on February 1, 2017, visitors in personal or rental vehicles wishing to view sunrise at Haleakala National Park will need to make sunrise viewing reservations ahead of time at recreation.gov,” states the news release. “The online reservation system is being implemented to

ensure visitor and employee safety, protect natural and cultural resources, and provide a quality visitor experience at the summit during sunrise hours (3am to 7am). The reservation system will go live on December 1, 2016. The cost is $1.50 per car. Before February 1, 2017, sunrise viewing parking spaces will continue to be available without advanced reservation, on a firstcome, first-served basis.” As an added bonus, park officials have created a new, multi-language flyer that explains why people can’t simply just drive up to the summit anymore in the late evening, early morning hours and expect to park and watch the sunrise. Keep in mind that this new online reservation system is the ONLY way to get a spot. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro

honored to be listed as one of the 50 best sushi bars in America for the year 2016. “We’re, obviously, humbled and very proud to be included with such amazing sushi bars all across America,” Kodama said. “We have great customers to thank for their loyalty over all the years and also great staffs in all our restaurants.” Sushi Sasabune in Honolulu was the only other Hawaii restaurant included on the list. The Oahu restaurant was named #31 on the list.

The Na Hale O Maui (NHOM) Community Land Trust received nearly $10,000 in surprise donations within two days. The money will support NHOM’s mission “to secure and preserve a permanent supply of affordable housing alternatives for low and moderate income households in Maui County.” Within 48 hours, the community land trust received $9,500 via the US mail service. The first was a check for $8,000 from the Kerr Labbe Lowe Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation. The following day, NHOM received $1,500 from the Kihei Lutheran Church Endowment Fund. The awards came on the heels of NHOM’s launch of their new website (Nahaleomaui. org), which was designed to expand the reach of NHOM and its program of developing truly affordable homes that remain affordable in perpetuity; the group’s efforts have placed 35 families in affordable homes– including the resale of two homes to income-qualified families–and is now planning to build 12 affordable homes in Lahaina. The website makes it easy to become a member and provide financial support with a one-time or recurring donation, said NHOM

Executive Director Cassandra Abdul. “It is also an excellent opportunity for local families to learn more about our mission and how we might be able to help them,” she said. “Our Oregon donor found us through the website where it was easy to review our mission, programs and progress. We hope to expand our efforts in social media fundraising to increase affordable housing in perpetuity for the benefit of the Maui community.” Abdul said affordable housing is a serious concern for everyone on Maui. “Happily, we can do something about it,” she said. “Our Mayor, his administration, the Maui County Council, and Maui residents are deeply concerned about housing in Maui County. Many of our visitors share our concern about the lack of affordable housing both on Maui and where they may also live. Our ‘new and improved’ website provides an opportunity for malahini and kama‘aina to learn about Na Hale O Maui’s unique program, providing affordable housing in perpetuity.”

were included on the “Top 50 Sushi Bars in America” list recently published on Msn.com. Sushi Paradise in Kihei was named #40 on a list that includes distinguished eateries such as Nobu–one of the world’s most recognized sushi bars and restaurants. The onechef sushi bar, with simple décor, is fairly low profile–tucked away in a strip mall. It is a favorite of locals but obviously has drawn national attention with its top-quality food. Maui’s Koiso Sushi Bar in Kihei was named the 43rd best sushi bar in the country. This near-legendary restaurant, with only 15 seats–is known for appealing to people who are interested in simple traditional Japanese plates such as nigiri and sashimi. If specialty rolls and a vast menu are appealing, Maui’s Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar is an option. Sansei was cited as the 47th best sushi restaurant in the country. Sansei has two locations on Maui– Kapalua and Kihei. It also has a restaurant in Waikiki and also one at the Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big Island. Sansei owner D.K. Kodoma said he was

The 16th annual Paddle for Hunger raised $8,000 on Thanksgiving Day, which will provide nearly 34,000 meals for needy families in Maui County. The funds raised by 264 participants facilitated the donation of more than 1,000 pounds of food to Maui Food Bank. This year’s event, organized by Hawaiian Paddle Sports, featured untimed “races,” a silent auction, door prizes and a pre-event food drive at Nalu’s. The $8,000 and 1,050 pounds of food that were raised for Maui Food Bank broke

In addition, all donations to the Pacific Cancer Foundation will stay in Maui County. The $12,204 raised doubles last year’s donation–and exceeded the $10,000 goal. On hand for the event were Jim Anderson, owner of The Beach House and Dollie’s Pub ‘n’ Cafe; Nancy La Joy, executive director of the Pacific Cancer Foundation; Debbie Patton, Touchdowns for Tatas Chair; and Seth Kuperman, owner of The Beach House and Dollie’s Pub ‘n’ Cafe. More than 90 businesses provided multiple prizes to the successful silent auction and raffle. The organizers also extend a special thanks to the Hotel Molokai and Makani Kai Air for representing Molokai this year by donating a trip to the neighbor island. The event also featured a performance by Marty Dread who supports many charitable events including Touchdowns for Tatas. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

Australian aviator David Mayman has promised investors that his personal jet packs will hit the market by mid-2017, though early adopters will pay about $250,000 for one, to fly a person at up to 60 mph for 10 minutes. The JB-10 (developed by Mayman and designer Nelson Tyler) has made about 400 test runs in Monaco and over downtown London and New York City, but the partners realize that ultimate success will require that the fuel tanks be downsized so that the craft can be powered electrically–and thus seek crowdfunding both for that model and a larger one to accommodate the Pentagon’s (Special Operations Command) tactical needs.

WILD LIFE The state agency Colorado Parks and Wildlife filed 21 criminal charges in October against the Squirrel Creek Wildlife Rescue center in Littleton, alleging that some of the orphaned and rehabbing animals Kendall Seifert houses are not being kept according to the state’s strict standards– and that Seifert’s 15-year-old center is also home to his popular swingers’ club (Scarlet Ranch) featuring weekend sex parties. One of the criminal charges suggests that rescue animals could be stressed by gazing at activity in the ranch’s bar area. Seifert said he will challenge the charges out of fear that many of the raccoons, foxes, song birds, coyotes, skunks, rabbits and squirrels he would have to relinquish would not find suitable facilities elsewhere.

In St. Paul, Minnesota, a 25-year-old woman told police on Nov. 3 that she was involuntarily roughed up several hours after being voluntarily roughed up at Arnellia’s Bar’s weekly “Smack Fest”–in which female patrons competitively slap each other’s faces for three “rounds” under strict house rules. The woman said she spoke amicably with her opponent, but by closing time, the opponent and several friends, including men, punched and kicked her outside the bar. (In other slapping news, a 71-year-old woman died in Lewes, England, in November while participating in a Chinese healing seminar that emphasizes being slapped repeatedly to rid the body of poisoned blood and toxins. The “healer,” Hongshi Xiao, charges clients around $900 to beat what he calls the “sha” out of them.)

EPISODE ALMOST ENDED IN TIE In November, in a remote area of Oregon’s Maury Mountains, a 69-year-old man killed an elk and dragged the carcass behind his off-road vehicle up a hill. According to the Crook County Sheriff’s office, the vehicle suddenly flipped over backward, and the man landed on, and was impaled by, the elk’s antlers. Fellow hunters summoned a helicopter, and the man has apparently survived.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT In a retail market long dominated by priests, “nonsectarian” funeral eulogizers now offer to give individually tailored remembrances of the deceased for a fee, according to an October report by a New York Post reporter who interviewed two local “celebrants,” who cited the declining appeal of “prayers.” And the British retailer ASOS announced in August that threefoot-long clip-on dinosaur tails had sold out in one of its two models (although New York magazine, which reported it in the U.S., was, for obvious reasons, baffled about why).

THE WAY THE WORLD WORKS Brittany Maynard, then 29, became “the face of the Right to Die movement” in 2014, according to a New York Post column, when she chose a legal physician-assisted suicide rather than awaiting the growth of her terminal brain tumor. In October, terminally ill California mother Stephanie Packer hoped to be “the face of the Right to Live movement” after revealing that her insurance company denied coverage for a drug that could extend her life–but at the same time disclosed that her suicide drugs are covered, and even disclosed her co-pay ($1.20).

MEDICAL MARVELS Margaret Boemer’s baby LynLee was “born” twice. In an October Texas Children’s Hospital interview, doctors described how the need to rid Boemer’s fetus of a rapidly growing tumor required them, at Boemer’s 23rd week of pregnancy, to remove the fetus completely from the uterus until it was “hanging out in the air” so that they could cut away the tumor and then reposition the fetus into the uterus. LynLee was “born” again by C-section 13 weeks later.

SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED San Francisco State University researchers revealed in April that no fungi or fecal bacteria were found on the seats of the city’s bus line or rapid transit trains (unlike their findings in 2011 before officials adopted easier-to-clean seats), but that a “rare” and “unusual” strain, called Pigmentiphaga was found–previously associated only with South Korean wastewater and the South China Sea. The city’s Department of Health said, of course, not to worry.

PERSPECTIVE A high-level policy document released by the Chinese government in September detailed plans to use technology to monitor citizen behavior to such a degree that each person would receive a “social credit” score (similar to a FICO score in the U.S. but covering a range of conduct beyond financial) that would be the basis for allotting perks such as government support in starting businesses and whether parents’ children are eligible for the best schools. “(K)eeping trust is glorious,” according to the document, and “good” behavior promotes a “harmonious socialist society.” ■

'From Here To Eternity' The 1953 classic returns for two special Maui screenings

★★★★★ Not Rated / 118 Min.

T

he opportunity to revisit the 1953 Best Picture Oscar winner From Here to Eternity on a Maui movie theater screen is as much an event for film buffs as it is a homecoming for this classic drama. Montgomery Clift stars as Robert E. Lee Prewitt, a soldier and bugler based at Schofield Barracks on Oahu. Prewitt immediately distinguishes himself from the other soldiers by refusing to take part in the unit’s boxing team. An intrigued sergeant (Burt Lancaster) observes Prewitt’s sustained defiance and also hits on his captain’s wife (Deborah Kerr). Director Fred Zinnemann also made the essential western High Noon, the musical Oklahoma!, the 1967 Best Picture winner A Man For All Seasons, the assassination thriller The Day of the Jackal, the Jane Fonda/Meryl Streep drama Julia and, his last movie, the Sean Connery drama Five Days One Summer. Zinnemann died in 1997 at the age of 89 and From Here to Eternity is his best film. Lancaster was a movie star in the same caliber as Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas and Clark Gable. Piercingly handsome but vulnerable, muscular and athletic but sym-

pathetic in any role and holding the frame like few other actors, Lancaster is among the most magnetic actors to ever grace the screen.Yet, despite how good he is here, the movie belongs to Clift and Frank Sinatra. Clift gives a commanding turn and makes Prewitt’s tortured journey achingly real. On the other hand, Sinatra steals every scene he’s in and absolutely owns his Oscar-winning role. Of course, The Chairman of the Board also played a soldier in The Manchurian Candidate, his best movie, but his turn here as Maggio is no less dynamic. Good luck taking your eyes off of Donna Reed, who’s mesmerizing in the Oscar-winning role of the prostitute who takes up with Prewitt. There isn’t a bad performance in the ensemble cast, which also includes wonderful turns by Jack Warden and Ernest Borgnine. Many have noted that the film is a toneddown adaptation of the 1951 James Jones novel. This distinction makes it sound like the film is tame but that isn’t the case. If you haven’t seen From Here to Eternity in, well, an eternity, you may have forgotten how sexy and funny it is. More importantly, the movie can be gritty and focuses on dual love stories that are more bittersweet than swoon worthy. The legendary love scene, with Lancaster and Kerr kissing passionately on the beach at

Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster and Frank Sinatra

Halona Cove, is a great example of the film’s dramatic power. The iconic moment is still rapturous but the famous kiss is immediately followed by Kerr’s heartbreaking confession. Make no mistake, this is a tough-hearted movie. The climactic attack on Pearl Harbor sequence is another stunner, conveying large scale tragedy over spectacle. How influential is From Here to Eternity? It’s the granddad of films like An Officer and a Gentleman, the vastly inferior Pearl Harbor and Hacksaw Ridge (which shares the central plot point of a soldier who, for a different reason, refuses to fight). The aforementioned kiss scene is arguably the most famous in cinema and was hilariously parodied in Airplane! Much of the movie was filmed at Schofield Barracks itself. Despite scenes taking

place at Kuhio Beach Park and Diamond Head, the movie has practically no locals in the cast and very little Hawaiian music. While it lacks local authenticity, it offers a complex depiction of beautiful men and women bearing wounded hearts and painful secrets. The film reportedly had two premieres: one in Hollywood, with Lancaster and Kerr in attendance, while the other took place at our own Iao Theater. Sinatra and Ava Gardner attended the Maui premiere. Fittingly, From Here to Eternity is once again playing on a Maui movie theater screen and it’s still a masterpiece. From Here to Eternity plays at the Maui Mall Megaplex on Sunday, Dec. 11 and Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 2pm and 7pm. ■

Sign Language SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

This is a week of unsolvable problems. These are the kinds of dilemmas whose solutions represent more trouble than they’re worth. I’m talking about when your neighbors start using power tools at inconvenient hours. There’s nothing you can really do about it, and trying will only earn you their animosity, and, possibly, more hassle and annoyance. Your primary option this week is to just grin and bear it, wait it out, and resist trying to do anything about it, because you can’t. If that’s too much for you to accept, consider this: There are, of course, always answers to your problems. They just might not be answers you like.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

The reason you have such a wishy-washy reputation is because you’re vocal. In reality, Pisceans, for example, are far more indecisive than you. But they have this tricky way of never verbally committing to an opinion or a course of action. I know some who can tell you what they think about something for ten minutes without revealing a thing. They’re very good at it. You have no problem formulating and expressing your opinion–it just mutates often. And because you’re vocal, people know about your frequent changes of heart. So my tip for you this week is: shut up. Wait until you’re sure before you speak up–and even then, wait until you’re asked.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Your eyes are tired. Your vision is swimming. Is it really the best time to be reading your horoscope? What can you possibly get out of it–or anything–in this state? Go get some rest, then think about what needs to be done. Contemplating it now will just exhaust you needlessly, especially because it’ll cost you much needed, spiritually-replenishing sleep. Turn off your phone, television, and computer, and go lie down. I’m not suggesting you sleep this week away, by any means. You really do have too much to do to get away with that. But maybe you can spare an afternoon? AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Aquarians are actually quite judgmental. Like your opposing sign, Leo, you never lack for an opinion on anything. Where you differ is in your flexibility. Not that those proud Lions can’t change their minds; it’s just that they can’t do so with the grace and ease that characterizes your entire attitude. You’re always ready to give someone a second chance, and often a third or fourth one, too. That someone will need it, this week, when it would be in your best interest to rethink your first impressions, as well as your second third, and fourth. If you can get over yourself long enough to figure out who they actually are, you’ll be glad you did. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Everything unraveled for me yesterday. Three longstanding plans I supposed were solid and nearly set in stone revealed themselves to be, one right after the other, completely untenable. Suddenly I had to rethink a whole host of things I’d put behind me as taken care of. Now I know what a Pisces’ daily life feels like, when everything is perpetually up in the air. How overwhelming! Luckily, I’m not the only one trying on someone else’s role this week–you can finally take a break from so much uncertainty as one sure thing after another unfolds in front of you. Don’t just enjoy all this stability and certitude, though. Run with it. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

When you’re asked to a BYOB party, every good Ram knows you bring as much as you want to drink, plus a bit extra. It’s just good form. If even those as supposedly selfish and insensitive as your tribe is reputed to be can keep basic courtesies in mind, it should be a snap for everyone else. Unfortunately, it’s not. Some are unaccustomed to really pulling their own weight, whether it comes to work or play. Your first instinct might be to pick up the slack, but please don’t. There’s a lesson to be learned here, and it’s not your call to keep them from it. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

You Bulls are familiar with the idea, “if you can’t fix it, get used to it.” When something you don’t like crosses your path, you now habitually do a quick triage: Can I change it? Avoid it? Or must I get used to it? This is a pretty healthy habit, actually, as it’s this kind of realism and self-appraisal that helps you be so efficient and effective. But there are those in your life who have perhaps never looked at anything in such stark, unyielding terms, let alone themselves. Your job this week is to help them out. This might require a bit of tough love, or saying shit they just don’t want to hear, which won’t make you popular. Nevertheless, you’re the right person for the job.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Sometimes your life is about doing the least objectionable thing on your to-do list. Instead of assessing your agenda in terms of your actual priorities, you’re all about avoidance, procrastination, and simply not facing up to the really hard or challenging shit you don’t want to do. Hey, I’m not condemning you; I’m a big-time lazy-ass procrastinator, too. But sometimes you’ve just got to grit your teeth and make it all happen, whether it fits your mood or not. This, my dear, is one of those weeks. Reorganize your head and look at the tasks ahead of you in terms of what’s most important, not least unpleasant.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

I was recently on a plane full of whiners. Everyone around me seemed to have something to complain about. What a drag: Babies crying uncontrollably, for hours, while nearby adults did the grown-up counterpart, for nearly as long. Some people complain habitually. They’ve forgotten how to simply be content. In the winter they complain it’s too cold. In the summer, naturally, it’s too hot, and there’s something not quite right about–well, everything. I hope that’s not you, Leo. Sometimes your sense of entitlement can get out of hand. Make sure that’s not so this week. Your life is actually pretty great. Please notice. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Don’t be square. You’ve done a good job, especially lately, of overcoming your natural prudishness and tendency to blindly follow rules. That’s good news for this week, because so many delicious opportunities lie just outside the box. The thing to keep in mind, Virgo, is that you really ought to be breaking rules–because you’re damn good at it. No one suspects you in the slightest, so you can get away with anything. I don’t expect you to go hog-wild here, Virgo. Not you. But it’d be a shame to not at least get away with something, wouldn’t it?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Some of my crazier friends have gotten so drunk or high that they’ve become lost in familiar environments. They were so out of their minds that they noticed completely different things than they did when they were sober. I don’t particularly recommend getting that messed up, but if you could so drastically and dramatically change the lenses and filters through which you view the world, that would not be a bad thing at all. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Reality is subject to our thoughts. Quantum physicists are discovering that when you get right down to it reality is made up of nothing. The only reason it seems so solid to us is because we view it that way. The truth is that we have tremendous influence over it simply with the power of our intentions and perceptions. Scorpios should be amazingly good at this, except for the fact that you’re constantly second-guessing yourselves. Give the universe a mixed message and what do you get back? A mess. If you could, though, just once, truly make up your mind about what you really wanted… well, anything could happen. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
