Hawaii's last sugarcane plantation

HC&S SUGARCANE PRODUCTION ENDING Monday, Dec. 12, 2016 marked the final cane haul for the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S) mill in Pu‘unene, Hawaii News Now reported. With no more cane burns scheduled and the final harvest winding down–parent company Alexander & Baldwin (A&B) announced the mill’s closure back in January–many workers have already been let go. “A transition team is helping workers adjust to life after sugar,” Hawaii News Now reported. “HC&S has already laid off about half of its 650 employees. More than 140 of them have found other jobs, according to the company.” The specifics of what exactly will happen to the company’s 36,000 acres is still largely unknown. Though A&B has said it would “pursue a diversified agricultural model,” that’s not exactly new for the company, as Maui writer and historian Jill Engledow has written. “The plantation’s efforts at crop diversification began when founder Henry Baldwin planted rubber in Nahiku in 1907,” Engledow wrote in a Nov. 28 post on her Maui Then and Now blog. “Like many crops tried in Hawai‘i, rubber grew well but failed as a business because workers’ wages were high relative to those in other areas. Perhaps the most successful crop experiment was the planting of pineapple on 270 acres of HC&S ranch land in 1921, followed by the building of a cannery in Kahului five years later. This project became known as Maui Land & Pineapple Company when it was sold to the Cameron family in 1969. ML&P stopped producing in 2009, but old-time employees and investors began the Hali‘imaile Pineapple Company to grow the fruit on some of ML&P’s land.” In all of this, however, it’s important to remember that while cane harvesting in Hawaii may be at an end, the plantation itself remains.

“Sugar production is ceasing, but A&B is still there,” anthropologist Carol MacLennan, author of Sovereign Sugar: Industry and Environment in Hawaii, told me back in January. “You still have a major company with say over the acreage.”

RADICAL NEW BOOK EXPLAINS WEST MAUI LAND POLITICS Living for hundreds of years with the selfsufficient ahupua‘a land-tenure system and a communal subsistence economy, Hawaiians, particularly commoners, were unaccustomed to the concept of fee simple land ownership. This unfamiliarity, coupled with numerous legal and logistical constraints, led to foreign acquisition of large amounts of land intended for Native Hawaiians. Many Hawaiian families were required to leave the lands they had cultivated for generations and were forced to move to populated towns such as Wailuku and Lahaina. –Maui Island Plan, 2014 Lahaina is a fascinating place. Most tourists probably just see it as an open-air shopping mall, loaded with trinket shops, t-shirt purveyors and burger joints sprinkled throughout a “historic whaling village,” as the Maui Visitors Bureau calls it. But that’s just marketing nonsense, told and retold so often many locals probably believe it by now. That’s why the new book Tourism Impacts West Maui is so radical and necessary. It upends all the “official” stories about Lahaina and the rest of the Westside, shakes them until all the tourist marketing nonsense shatters, then gives a straight telling of what really happened. For many visitors, Lahaina represents “Maui,” but it’s really just a Disney-esque facade, built on more than a century of tidy corporate narratives that minimize or erase actual Hawaiian history. This book, which is a collection of academic essays edited by Lance Col-

lins and Bianca Isaki (and published by the North Beach-West Maui Benefit Fund), sweeps all that away, providing a new series of explanations for why West Maui looks the way it does. It’s not a pretty story, but it’s a vital one–especially for locals interested in issues like public access and social justice. There are nine essays in the book, covering subjects as a look at land claims in Wahikuli, memories of plantation labor, the social/historical perspective of Lahaina’s annual Halloween festivities and the tortured history of the Lahaina Bypass. All appear under the same theme: American capitalism and private property rights, first brought to Hawaii in 1848 through the “Great Mahele” (the subject of the Maui Island Plan quote that begins this piece), did so much damage to West Maui that we’re continuing to live with its effects to this day. Though much of the book is wrenching, there are moments of surprising mirth. Charles Devaney’s brief essay, titled “Attempt to Map the Existing Trails of West Maui,” is a gem, full of both dry humor and head-shaking sadness. Put briefly, Devaney and a colleague flew to Maui from Oahu to map West Maui’s public trails. “We landed in Kahului, picked up our rental car and made our way to Ka‘anapali where we would be taking residence for the next three weeks,” he wrote. “Some of the conversation that took place was about how many times we thought we were going to summit Pu‘u Kukui.” I laughed out loud when I read that. In fact, as any resident could have warned them, Devaney and his colleague–though checking out every public road into the mountains they could find on maps–found nothing but locked gates and “No Trespassing” signs–access closed by big operations like Maui Land & Pineapple Company and Kamehameha Schools, none of which bothered to respond to his requests for access permission. But a personal favorite is Sydney Iaukea’s essay on “heritage tourism” in Lahaina. Iaukea, who holds a doctorate in political science, worked in the service industry in Ka‘anapali in her youth (she was also named the first “Miss Lahaina” in 1992). Her essay, “The Re-Storing of Lahaina,” uses meticulous research to strip away the tourist-marketing that so clogs the town today. “Lahaina was built and preserved to mimic a whaling town so that tourists vacationing at the newly built Ka‘anapali Beach Resort could visit after long days of rest and relaxation,” she wrote. “However, the whaling tale that was recreated had very little in common with the actual industry that existed a century and a half prior. As this whaling historical record was foregrounded, all other social narratives of Lahaina took a backseat, with the missionary influence vying for a close second.” Lahaina, as Iaukea notes, was only really a whaling town between the years 1842 and

1860. What’s more, none of the buildings on Front Street were specific to the whaling industry (in fact, just one actual whaling structure remains in the entire town–the Spring House, located near the Wharf Cinema Center). That’s why, as Iaukea wryly noted, the architectural design guidelines for the Lahaina Historic District mandate “Nantucket” and “Victorian” styles. In fact, Lahaina Town was a plantation town, built literally on the bones of the old Hawaiian Kingdom’s capital–Moku‘ula, which featured a small island constructed in the middle of freshwater ponds, fed by streams running down from the West Maui Mountains. Of course, the Pioneer Mill got rid of all that. “This rich natural environment existed for centuries before the Pioneer Mill Company installed vast irrigation systems in West Maui that diverted most of the fresh water across the plains to the drier areas for sugar cane production,” Iaukea wrote. “These massive water diversion projects

produced stagnant waters, which are said to have introduced mosquitoes in Lahaina.” After using Moku‘ula for “dumping grounds,” Iaukea writes, the Pioneer Mill covered it with a baseball field, which remains there to this day. Keep in mind that these essays are largely works of academia, with all the jargon and clunky sentences that academic writing holds. But their ideas and thinking are refreshing and even invigorating, like inhaling a few gulps of pure oxygen after spending the day in traffic. Collins told me the book will be available for sale at the University of Hawaii Press website starting Dec. 20. Or you can order it from Barnes & Noble or the Maui Friends of the Library bookstores. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

KIM BRISSON-LUTZ RETURNS TO MAUI BREWING CO.

MANAKAI SWIMWEAR OFFERS NEW ECOFRIENDLY LINE Maui-based Manakai Swimwear is launching a new line of environmentallyfriendly bathing suits. The Eco-Conscious Collection is made with sustainable techno-fabric created from recycled plastics and is manufactured on domestic soil. Nearly all swimwear on the market today is made from some form of polyester. Each year, roughly 70 million barrels of crude oil are used to produce virgin polyester. Instead, Manakai uses recycled tricot and recycled polyester to manufacture its suits. The environmentally sustainable fabrics are made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled fibers. The fabrics–which are made from discarded PET materials including carpet fluff, plastic bottles and fishing line–are engineered to be ultra resistant to chlorine and suntan oils and creams, according to a company website. The fabrics not only provide muscle control and shape retention, they have UV protection, a soft feel and comfortable stretch. Company co-owner Anna Lieding said the manufacturers of Manakai Swimwear’s fabrics and the company that does their custom prints are all certified and accredited by environmental organizations for their eco-conscious practices. In addition to using eco-friendly fabrics, the company manufactures its eco-conscious swimwear line in the United States. “Manakai Swimwear is employing several small family-run businesses with whom we have spent several months

Kim Brisson-Lutz, former Lead Brewer with Maui Brewing Company (MBC) from 2008 to 2012, is returning to the company to be its new Brewmaster. Brisson-Lutz, who initially became interested in brewing after receiving a homebrew kit from her roommates, returns to the company with 11 years of experience in the craft beverage industry. She began her career at J Lohr Winery in Paso Robles, California. Brisson-Lutz’s craft beer brewing career launched when she took a job with MBC in the old Lahaina production facility, where she worked all facets of the brewing process. After three years, she was promoted to Lead Brewer of the sevenbarrel brewpub in Kahana where she honed her skills at recipe development and experimentation. During her tenure with MBC, BrissonLutz created the recipe for the awardwinning Belgian ale La Perouse White Witbier, which won MBC a Silver at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010 and a Bronze at World Beer Cup in 2012. Continuously striving for more knowledge in the industry, she relocated to one of the most competitive craft beer locations, San Diego, where she served as Lead Brewer at Saint Archer Brewing Company. As the MBC Brewmaster, the company says Brisson-Lutz will focus on quality and innovation. “We couldn’t be happier to welcome Kim’s skill and innovation back to Maui Brewing Company,” said MBC’s Director of Brewing Operations Jesse Houck. “I have been a huge fan of her work and

accomplishments over the last few years and we look forward to bringing that talent back to the islands.”

D. Kapua‘ala Sproat has been named Associate Director of the Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law. The Center, headquartered at the William S. Richardson School of Law, specializes in teaching and producing scholarship about Hawaii’s unique culturally based legal framework. Sproat is a UH Manoa associate professor of law who has won numerous awards as a teacher and scholar. Her particular expertise is in the complex realm of water rights. In 2014, she was a Regents’ Medalist for Excellence in Teaching, the University of Hawaii’s highest award for teaching. She also was named an Outstanding Professor at Richardson Law School in 2013. Last year, Sproat was singled out for the Distinguished Environmental Law Education Award for Emerging Scholars by the Academy of Environmental Law of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. During the IUCN’s recent World Conservation Congress in Honolulu, she was tapped to offer her expertise as a speaker for the global conference that drew more than 10,000 delegates to Hawaii from 192 nations. Sproat recently copublished a 1,400-page research volume on Native Hawaiian law that touches on everything from traditional and customary rights to selfdetermination to securing land titles and water rights. The volume, titled Native Hawaiian Law: A Treatise, was coedited and largely written by Ka Huli Ao Director Melody Kapilialoha MacKenzie–with Sproat and Susan K. Serrano as executive editors. The book offers a comprehensive overview as well as historical background for Native Hawaiian law as it relates to state, federal and international law. Dean Avi Soifer said Sproat’s decision to help

lead Ka Huli Ao is a significant step in what is already a remarkable career. “People tend to think that Kapua can do anything, and that may be accurate,” Soifer said. “She is a demanding teacher, a first-rate scholar and a terrific lawyer. She more than encourages her students and the many others whom she teaches; she actually inspires them.” MacKenzie called Sproat an outstanding colleague who is dedicated to her students and her community. “Kapua’s appointment as Associate Director recognizes the responsibilities that she has taken on to increase Ka Huli Ao’s administrative capacity and financial resources,” MacKenzie said. “She is not only an outstanding scholar and teacher, her advocacy work with rural and Neighbor Island communities speaks to the core of Ka Huli Ao’s mission. We are very fortunate to have her at the Law School and particularly at Ka Huli Ao.” Sproat joined the Richardson Law School faculty in 2007 as an Assistant Professor with Ka Huli Ao and the Law School’s Environmental Law Program. She is Director of the Environmental Law Clinic and teaches courses in Native Hawaiian and Environmental Law, as well as Legal Research and Writing. Before joining the faculty, she spent nine years as an attorney in the Hawaii office of Earthjustice, which is a national public interest environmental litigation firm. ■

News Of The Weird EVEN BAKING SODA IS DANGEROUS

THIS WEEK IN PIG PSYCHOLOGY

Almost all law enforcement agencies in America use the Scott Reagent field test when they discover powder that looks like cocaine, but the several agencies that have actually conducted tests for “false positives” say they happen up to half the time. In October, the latest victims (husband-and-wife truck drivers with spotless records and Pentagon clearances) were finally released after 75 days in jail awaiting trial–for baking soda that tested “positive” three times by Arkansas troopers (but, eventually, “negative” by a state crime lab). (Why do police love the test? It costs $2.) The truck drivers had to struggle to get their truck back and are still fighting to be recleared to drive military explosives.

Pigs are such complex animals that scientists are studying how to tell the “optimists” from the “pessimists.” British researchers writing in a recent Biology Letters described how “proactive” porkers differed from “reactive” ones, and, as with humans, how their particular mood at that time distinguished them as “glass half full” rather than “glass half empty.” (Unaddressed, of course, was specifically whether some pigs were actually “optimistic” that the chute at the slaughterhouse might lead to a pleasant outcome.)

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Activists told Vice Media in November that 100,000 people worldwide identify as “ecosexuals,” ranging from those who campaign for “sustainable”-ingredient sex toys to those who claim to have intercourse with trees (but sanding the bark for comfort might provoke concern about being “abusive”). A University of Nevada, Las Vegas professor studies the phenomenon and knows, for example, of humans who “marry” the Earth or prefer sex while rolling in potting soil or under a waterfall. On one “arborphilia” support blog, a female poster regretted her choice to have “convenient” sex with the sycamore outside her bedroom window instead of the sturdy redwood she actually covets. (Yes, some “mainstream” environmentalists somehow are not completely supportive.)

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING Ricky Berry and his roommate walked in to a CVS store in Richmond, Virginia, in November to ask if it carried sliced cheese but were told no. Minutes later, all the employees walked to the back of the store, hid in a locked room, and called the police. Berry and pal, and a third customer (with a toothache and desperately needing Orajel), were bewildered by the empty store until a Richmond police officer arrived. After observing that the three customers appeared nonthreatening, he mused along with Berry that “this is how weird, apocalyptic movies start.” WRIC-TV reported later that the employee who panicked and called police will “possibly” need retraining. GROUNDBREAKING LEGAL WORK In October, a court in Australia’s Victoria state began considering an appeal on whether three deaf people might be too intellectually challenged to have planned a murder. The prosecutor offered surveillance video of the three in a lobby planning the murder’s details via sign language as they waited for an elevator to take them up to the eventual crime scene.

QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS The Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas, got the message in November and shut down its “world’s tallest waterslide” (17 stories; riders reaching speeds of 60 mph) after the neck-injury death of a 10-year-old rider in August. But comparably altitude-obsessed architects in Tokyo said in November that they were moving ahead with proposals for “Next Tokyo 2045” to include a one-mile-high residential complex (twice as tall as the currently highest skyscraper). A spokesperson for principal architects Kohn Pedersen Fox said he realizes that coastal Tokyo, currently in earthquake, typhoon and tsunami zones, would present a climate-change challenge (and especially since the building would be on land once reclaimed from Tokyo Bay).

IRONY San Diego police officer Christine Garcia, who identifies as transgender, was turned away in November as she attempted to enter the Transgender Day of Remembrance at the city’s LGBT Community Center–because organizers thought the sight of a police uniform might upset some people. (Garcia herself was one of the event’s organizers.)

CHICK MAGNET Gary Zerola was arraigned in Boston in November on two counts of rape. He’s a defense lawyer, former prosecutor, one-time “Most Eligible Bachelor” winner, and was a finalist in the first season of ABC-TV’s The Bachelor. He was also accused of two counts of rape in 2006 (but acquitted at trial) and another in 2007 (but the charge was dropped).

PERSPECTIVE It was only a quarter-million-dollar grant by the National Institutes of Health, but what it bought, according to budget scrutiny by The Washington Free Beacon in November, was the development of a multiplayer computer game (inevitably competing for attention in an overstuffed commercial market) hoping to teach good reproductive health habits. “Caduceus Quest” employs roleplaying as “doctors, policymakers, researchers, youth advocates” and others to “solve medical mysteries and epidemiologic crises.” The target, according to the University of Chicago grant proposal, is African-American and Latino teenagers around Chicago. ■

HOW HAWAII WILL SURVIVE LIFE IN

P

H

awaii, and Maui, is in a bubble. Enclosed by the Pacific and with our own unique culture and heritage, we are literally and figuratively removed from much of what happens on the mainland. Though residents are quite aware of island politics, national politics seems far away and foreign. It’s tempting to think that the miles of land and ocean that separate us from the White House will protect us, but for better or worse, Hawaii is at the mercy of the federal government along with the rest of this country. The president’s choices influence all of us, in large and small ways. We can’t put our heads in the (beautiful, golden, warm) sand when it comes to national politics. What’s happening on the very opposite side of the country is disturbing and dire, and it will affect us. President-elect Donald Trump will be the most unqualified person in our history to hold the highest office in the land, and he will have a say in all of our lives. “I never did anything like this,” Trump said of assuming the presidency of the United States. That much is more than clear. Many mainlanders are freaking out. The national mood is largely one of distress and confusion, with a president-elect who is unpredictable, incapable, and filling his administration with politicians that range from the scary to the unqualified. It’s difficult to tell exactly what will happen, because it seems that Trump himself doesn’t quite know. But there has been quite a bit of fearspeak and unspecific policy talk, and many promises that will be difficult to fulfil. The whole thing is a giant work in progress. We do know that Trump has assessed

the situation and has made it clear that he wants change, of some sort. Regardless of his opinions, with a Republicancontrolled House of Representatives and Senate, we know we can expect a few changes down the line. To prepare ourselves, we can make some pretty good guesses about what and who might be affected here in our island home, and just as crucial, what we can do about it. PLANNED PARENTHOOD Planned Parenthood provides birth control, HIV testing, pregnancy testing, emergency contraception, STI testing and treatment for both men and women, vaccinations, and abortions. It is a

BY LANTANA HOKE the Supreme Court, which Trump is set to do. Though he has defaulted on many of his promises, Trump has reaffirmed his commitment to placing a pro-life Justice on the Supreme Court. A pro-life Justice could ultimately mean the overturning of 1973’s Roe v. Wade, which constitutionally protects a woman’s right to abortion. Trump says we have “a long way to go” on this issue, and that’s true any way you look at it. But with a Republican congress and an outspoken agenda against women’s health rights, we might also see federal funding cuts to Planned Parenthood. Government funding is critical to the operations of Planned Parenthood. “We’re not sure yet what’s to come, though we may see renewed attacks on Planned Parenthood and reproductive healthcare,” said Katie Rogers, Communications Manager of the Great Northwest and Hawaiian Islands. Regardless of who controls the White House, Planned Parenthood is prepared to “fight to make sure that health center doors stay open, and that people in this country can get access to basic reproductive health care, no matter their zip code, income, sexual orientation, race, religion, gender, or country of origin.”

and speak up for reproductive healthcare. Talk to your family and friends, daughters and sons, even if–especially if–it is uncomfortable. Educate people: if abortion is an issue, let them know that less than five percent of Planned Parenthood’s funding goes toward abortion. Federal funding cannot be used for abortions as mandated by law. You can also speak your gratitude by call our state representatives to thank them for their support. Using your voice is more important than ever. HEALTHCARE The Affordable Care Act, the so-called Obamacare, has benefited hundreds of thousands of Hawaii residents through expanding Medicaid, eliminating lifetime limits, ending discrimination for pre-existing conditions, and increasing funding for community health centers. Though flawed, thousands of Hawaii residents depend on those clauses. Although Trump has said that he is open to keeping “parts of Obamacare,” that statement shows his deep misunderstanding of the nature of the ACA. You can’t just keep the parts you like and do

pillar of women’s reproductive healthcare in Hawaii, providing coverage to over 80,000 people in this region. It depends on federal funding to provide these services. A president’s power doesn’t just lie in the four years of their term, in which (we hope) they can only do so much damage. A president’s real legacy is in the lifetime appointment of a justice to

WHAT YOU CAN DO You can donate directly to Planned Parenthood to help them further their mission. Through their website (plannedparenthood.org/get-involved), you can contribute nationally or directly to the Greater Northwest and Hawaiian Islands. You can also make an appointment for your health care needs at Planned Parenthood, which will show support. Lastly, you can speak out against hate

away with the parts you don’t; the parts of the system depend on each other. There are a few scenarios that could play out. The ACA could be totally overturned. If it isn’t totally overturned, and there’s an attempt to keep some parts of the ACA, like the popular existingconditions clause, other problems are likely to occur, like skyrocketing costs from insurance companies. WHAT YOU CAN DO Right now, House Speaker Paul Ryan is doing a national survey. Call his number to register your opinion: 202-2253031. Press 2 for information on the ACA and then press 1 to register your support for the ACA. You can also leave a voicemail. FEDERAL PROGRAMS The federal government disburses federal dollars each year through a variety of social programs. This funding affects various populations in Hawaii. There are social programs for like Head Start, the school lunch program, financial aid, and Title I and III programs, which are

designed to meet the educational needs of all of Hawaii’s students. There are programs to meet the neediest among us, from health insurance to SNAP (food stamps) and housing subsidies. WHAT YOU CAN DO First, you can use your voice. Call your national representatives. They have to listen to you when you call. Using the good old fashioned phone is more powerful than emailing or posting on social media. We see this at the local level: when representatives are inundated with phone calls, they are forced to listen. When you call, pick a specific cause you want to see supported, or list them. If it’s awkward for you, you can find calling scripts online. If you don’t know where to start, here’s the White House phone number: 202-456-1111. Second, you can use your wallet. If you’re short on cash, your time is also valued. There are many remarkable local non-profits dedicated to supporting community members in need of money, time, and equipment. Check out annual MauiTime Charity Gift Guide for ideas. NATIONAL PARKS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Widely criticized by Republicans for using his executive power to do so, President Obama created more national monuments than any other president. He also increased the size of a national marine monument

off of Hawaii fourfold to create the largest protected area on earth. This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the National Park Service. “Our future funding levels will be set by the next administration and Congress,” said Andrew Munoz of the National Park Service. But the NPS anticipates “little or no” immediate impact on park visitors: Munoz shared that “National parks continue to see record breaking visitation that contributes billions of dollars to local economies nationwide. Haleakala National Park contributed nearly $92 million to Hawaii’s economy alone.”

“People of today have truly benefited from the foresight and legacy of those who lived 100 years ago, when Haleakala National Park and the National Park Service were created” says Polly Angelakis of Haleakala National Park. 100 years from now, let’s hope they can still say the same. So while our parks are likely protected, for now, there is the troubling issue of climate change. President Barack Obama worked to catch America up to where the rest of the developed world stands on the issue of climate change. In contrast, Trump does not honor the science of climate change and has installed Myron Ebell, a climate-change denying environmental boogey-man, to help head the Environment Protection Agency team. Politicizing the environment and denying the role of fossil fuels on climate change has terrifying implications for our island state (and nations–the Maldives and the Marshall Islands are already witnessing these effects). This is one of the big areas in which what they do at the national level will impact our lives down here at sea-level. WHAT YOU CAN DO First off, get outside and go visit Haleakala National Park, and bring your kids: all National Parks are currently free to fourth grade students through their program Every Kid in a Park. Vote with your dollar and buy local. Be a part of behavior change, and support county measures, like the Styrofoam ban, that show support for our environment. And just to be safe, don’t buy beachfront property (as if we could afford it). HUMAN DECENCY (AND, OH, THE SHAME…) “It really was something I was proud of,” Trump said of his divisive and unethical campaign, in which he called for a ban on Muslims and deportation of immigrants. Here on Maui, we exist somewhat outside of the racial tensions of the mainland and its social movements, like Black Lives Matter. We don’t border Mexico,

and Muslims and African Americans are a minority in Hawaii. We have our own unique cultural issues and inequalities. But as a state that used to be a sovereign kingdom, we are aware of deep and historical injustices and we know a bit about the boundaries of freedom. These ideas are deeply harmful to democracy. Recently, there has been more talk about a registry for Muslims in America. One of Trump’s staffers even cited the Japanese Internment Camps of World War II as a precedent. An action like that is a major threat to American citizens, including those who are not immigrants or Muslims. Harm to “them” is harm to us. The atrocity of these proposals is appalling and disgraceful and cannot be tolerated. In addition to affecting policy, the president can have, the presidency is a symbol. We are coming into a very troubling symbolic figure who has no qualms about sexually assaulting women, who cares not at all for protecting minorities or other vulnerable members of our society, and who has broken the boundaries of ethics and decency at every turn. WHAT YOU CAN DO Be decent. It sounds like such a soft solution, trite in this world where many people feel powerless to control the world around them. But it is when people feel powerless that they become so. Believe in truth, and believe in decency. Encourage dialogue, and don’t accept less than what is true and right. Don’t be afraid to say what you think. Lucky we live Hawaii, truly. Here on Maui, we are unique. We are small yet powerful, and hold up the ideals of community and generosity. We need to maintain that. The principle of aloha has been commodified for economic advantage, packaged for tourists, and misunderstood and misrepresented, but it has not been defiled. Rather, aloha is what defines us. It must be maintained, and it is everyone’s responsibility. Leading us to our last point… VOTE, VOTE, VOTE! There has been a shift in social and political consciousness on Maui in recent years. New voters came out to impose a moratorium on GMOs in 2014, and the Shaka movement has continued to make gains, with new seats on the Maui County Council. Last year, protesters lined the roads up to Haleakala and Mauna Kea. Protesters took to the streets in front of Paia Inn regarding new development. There have been protests in Wailuku over water rights, and in front of First Hawaiian Bank in Kahului to support Standing Rock (the

parallels between North Dakota’s Native Americans and Hawaiians in regard to water rights has struck a bit of a nerve). But despite all the progress, most residents still are not voting in local or national elections. This year, roughly 25% of Maui County residents voted. Only a quarter of citizens in Maui County help decide their own leaders, a decision that’s arguably as important to your future as picking your life partner. Not disturbed about national politics, or don’t believe your vote matters? Think local. If you want smart development and preservation of agriculture land, if you care about our beaches, oceans, and mountains, if you care about the education of our keiki and water rights for sovereign people, if you don’t want the Old Maui High to be developed into a mini-Paia or you do want a say in things like what Monsanto is doing, then do not be a part of that 75 percent of people who decided not to elect the people who make these decisions on our behalf. It’s not too late if you happen to be a non-voter. We vote every two years. Vote in your local and state elections. At

the risk of sounding like an alarmist, do this while you still can–because who are we to say what the future holds for this democracy? The excuses are noted: I don’t want to be on the draft. I don’t want to be on jury duty. Just another way for the government to keep tabs on us. These are not good excuses. The draft isn’t much of a concern these days, as much of our warfare is conducted via drones and contractors. And jury duty? Really? Additionally, it’s very unlikely that you are anonymous or off the grid; if you have a driver’s license, a registered car, a home, or fill out a W2 form, the government is quite aware of your existence already. Voting will only make you a more powerful and involved Maui resident. “Don’t be afraid,” Trump soothed shortly after his election. We agree on something: fear won’t accomplish anything positive here. But based on the sinister promises he gave for the reign of Trump, we should be prepared. Your life shouldn’t be dictated by politics, but you should be aware of what’s going on around you. Although you should not flee the country, you and your family should certainly have passports, in case you ever need them. You should not abandon decency, but you should stand up for what you think is right. Believe in facts and truth. Give where you can. Be decent. And vote! ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

lunch. We just wanted to wait to put our focus on dinner. We actually were pretty busy at lunch, too.” “We were so busy in the beginning at Sale Pepe,” adds Qiana. “We were getting run down. We thought me might not be putting our best foot forward. We decided to stop for peace of mind.” A year and some later, they procured the lease for the adjoining space, with plans to make it a stand-alone lunch menu. “A Fianco, it means ‘next door’ in Italian, so it will be Sale Pepe’s next door,” says Qiana. “We will have daytime small plates, about eight items. Two pastas, very simple and straightforward. The menu will be in English and very simple to understand. We’re going to use that marble wall to write the items for everyday.” They will have sandwiches on the menu, and Michele developed his own bread for the panini. “We basically are gonna use the pizza

already a fan of the pizza coming out at night, so it’s no surprise there. It’s nice to be able to get one during the day, and have it as an individual serving. Even the salads are stellar. I’m always on the lookout for standout veggies for midday meals. I try them both–the Fregola and Kula greens. The Fregola is a garbanzo bean chopped salad, full of herbs, onion, a tiny pasta called fregola and a light dusting of cheese. I can really appreciate eating these mixes of chilled pasta, beans and veggies with a light vinaigrette. The Kula greens and veggies are so fresh and crisp, just at the height of maturity, full of flavor, topped with gorgeous radish slivers and sliced cherry tomatoes. In the evening, the space will turn into a lounge for people awaiting their table in Sale Pepe. “At night time this is our wine bar,” says Qiana. “People can wait here, and

njoying a leisurely lunch is one of my coveted pastimes. When A Fianco opened in Lahaina, I grabbed my husband and took a tour of their menu. A Fianco is right next to Sale Pepe in the Lahaina Center. That’s because the owners of Sale Pepe, Michele and Qiana Di Bari, are behind the new lunch spot. A Fianco is bright inside, with white marble on the walls and tables which adds a lovely, cooling effect to the room–especially important in Lahaina. Wood and cast iron accents on chairs and walls soften the look. It’s a friendly place where you can relax with kids or friends and enjoy a daytime bite. When Sale Pepe first opened, they served lunch, but then they stopped. I asked Michele and Qiana why, and what makes A Fianco different. “When we started lunch at Sale Pepe, we had just opened,” says Michele. “It was a lot. We had the same menu as dinner for

dough,” says Michele. “When you bake the dough, and you don’t stretch it, it has a unique texture. We’re gonna leave it smaller. It gets fluffy. It’s very light. It’s something different.” Michele then runs out of A Fianco to grab me a cooked bread from the kitchen in Sale Pepe. Michele’s panini bread looks almost like a pita, or a pocket bread of sorts. “We bake it at a high temperature,” he says. “Then what it does is it puffs up. Crisp on the outside, not doughy. Every week we will change the filling. For the first week it will be mozzarella, grilled eggplant, basil mayo for the veggie sandwich and the other one will be a meat. Every week we will change it. Same for all the items. The pizzas are going to be great and just $8. It will be really fresh, instead of offering a slice, pre-made, that we put in the oven. This way it’s nice, hearty,

fresh-made pizza. I think it makes a difference. It makes it more healthy. We are using fresh mozzarella. It’s a nice little pizza that doesn’t get you stuffed.” I tried the eggplant panini and it rocks. The sandwich bread is light, slightly crisp outside, and the filling of fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato and roasted eggplant is just what I’m looking for. It’s like my favorite heavy eggplant parmesan gutbomb has been redesigned into an elegant and billowy panini. “It gets like a pita almost,” says Qiana. “You can eat this sandwich and you don’t need a nap. You can keep going. We’re really trying to stay within the $5 to $15 for anything on the menu. We really want to reach locals who haven’t experienced Sale Pepe. We’re going to have spaghetti and marinara and meatballs. We want the menu at A Fianco to be really accessible.” The pizza is also delicious. I try the fresh mozzarella and basil version. I’m

have pupus here. We will have four to six items and the wine menu. We’re excited to reach the locals. It was a great experience to tweak our Sale Pepe concept and challenge ourselves. Now we can do private parties here. Pasta-making classes, different options. I foresee making this a space to do cultural events. I’m envisioning an art night, a lounge night.” For now they serve lunch from 11am to 2pm Monday to Friday, with a seasonally changing menu. “We also have a nice Italian organic frozen coffee,” says Michele. “It’s like a granita, sweet with cream. You see them everywhere in Italy. We want to create this place for the locals and we want to have that European energy. Like you’re eating at home.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

'Don't Crack Under Pressure' TALKING STORY WITH KITEBOARDER JESSE RICHMAN ABOUT THE MAUI PREMIERE OF HIS NEW MOVIE

raderie between the riders, and how you can employ that same method to just about any part of your life. What I like about that whole concept is you could be starting a business or changing a diaper in the back seat of a car or whatever stressful moment you have. You have the option of panicking or freaking out, and that’s not going to do anything except make things more dangerous and stressful. If you take the time to stop and think, and be smart and react, then you will step into a better situation. In a nutshell, that’s what the film is about. MT: How did your training sessions in Norway go?

Jesse Richman with the Norway Crew

T

here’s a premiere of Don’t Crack Under Pressure, Part 2 this Saturday, Dec. 17 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. This will be the third film that Maui kiteboarder Jesse Richman–runner-up for the King of the Air Champion in 2016–will appear in. We caught up with Richman to have a chat about his newest release. MAUITIME: How did you get involved with this film? JESSE RICHMAN: The company Nuit De La Glisse has been making extreme sports movies for about 35 years. They pretty much put out a film every year. If you’ve ever heard of Warren Miller’s ski films, it’s kind of like a French version of that, with a multi-sport genre. Three years ago, I started working with them and this is my third film. Each year I’ve been a lot happier with the film from the year before. MT: How was the experience of filming the third film different from your first two?

MT: What makes this third film more interesting? JR: This is the third year with the same team of 14 athletes. We’re all from different countries and different sports. What’s really exciting about this year’s film is that usually the snow guys go to Norway and Sweden to find crazy snow stuff and me and the free divers will meet the surfers in Tahiti for the ocean sports. This year, all the athletes went to pretty much every stop together. We have the Tahitian surfers and myself in Norway snowboarding and jumping off cliffs–we put ourselves in their shoes for a minute. Then in Tahiti some of the snow guys went with us, and we were like, alright, let’s tow you into some waves and see how you like this, and return the favor.

MT: What’s going through your mind when you are so far off plan? JR: It’s so much fear that you can’t even let it remotely affect you. Personally, it’s a feeling that I really enjoy. That’s why I go out to Jawz and other big-wave breaks whenever it’s good. That fearful moment that there are major consequences is a pretty unique feeling, but the Norway ex-

MT: What are the dangers of being up in the air higher than you expected? Can’t you just sail down? JR: Theoretically, yes. Everything should be fine. You’re not putting any abnormal load under your kite. But occasionally, things do break. It’s just a little stressful thinking that if something does break, you have zero Plan B. Normally, I would have a reserve parachute with me so if something did happen I could release my kite and pull my parachute. This moment, I didn’t think I was going to go that high. I don’t like to put myself in a situation where I don’t have a Plan B, or C or D. MT: Where else do you go? Does Hawaii come into play? JR: There is some Jawz and Lanai and then that leads into the Tahiti section where I spend some time with Zane Schweitzer, from Lahaina. He is stand-up paddling and foiling, and I’m kiting and surfing. We end up finding a pod of whales and go free diving and kiting and surfing with whales. The Tahiti section is pretty different. It’s the most beautiful whale footage I’ve ever encountered. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more A&E news, visit: mauitime.com/entertainment

MT: How does that contribute to the extreme sports film genre? JR: This film is not trying to be the most progressive and extreme in any one of the sports. Instead, it’s meant to show people what goes on in the head when you’re dealing with these stressful situations. Really, it doesn’t matter if you’re a surfer or a snowboarder or a diver or a kiteboarder. We all run into situations that can become life-threatening. This film examines how the athlete will deal with that moment to harness their fear to make the right decisions. MT: How do they shed light on good decision-making? JR: It may look like the athletes have a death wish but it’s quite the contrary. We’re trying to live life to the fullest. It’s more of an inspirational film. It shows the cama-

PHOTO COURTESY NUIT DE LA GLISSE

JR: I got to know the team and the film crew a lot better. This film, I took more charge. I’m the only kiteboarder on the team and in the film. There aren’t that many people who really understand the ride, or the total aspect of kitesurfing. It can be difficult for the videographers who don’t know what I’m going to do. I really had to take direction to get the shots that I wanted. They have to be in the right spot with just the perfect camera settings to capture that moment for the rider. But really, it’s more up to the rider to visualize what you’re going to do, and what it’s going to look like because there are a lot of things that we want to come across but are

difficult to capture because of any number of things from lighting to angle.

JR: I travel to Norway for week. It was the first time I’ve been in a helicopter in the mountains. It scared me so much. I was barely able to stand the first time I got dropped off on these peaks with snowboarders. After about five days, I took my kite up there and tried to go snow kiting. I’ve done snowkiting before but never in really steep mountains. I probably had the most scariest/stupidest flight I’ve ever had–I ended up being a thousand feet higher than I had anticipated. That was a stressful moment, when you go so far off your plan that it gets a little scary. But I’m still here to tell the tale, and I have to say it’s a beautiful sequence in the film.

perience went beyond that. It was almost foolish. I should have seen it coming. But in that moment I can’t focus on that at all because it’s do or die. I have to literally just put every ounce of effort into how do I deal with this situation. I’ve spent my life seeing how long I can stay in the air or how high up I can go, but this was the one moment in my life when I was thinking, “How do I get down?”

'Manchester By The Sea' It requires a lot of patience, which is good and bad ★★★★★ Rated R / 137 Min.

T

he early scenes of Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea require your attention and patience, as Lonergan gives no hint of the stunning reveal coming around the corner. When we meet Lee Chandler (played by Casey Affleck), he’s making a consistent living cleaning toilets and working as a maintenance man. Lee is alone and determined to fill his time with work. When Lee receives news of a death in the family, he drives out to a town he was once happy to put behind him. Once funeral arrangements have been made, Lee discovers that his role as “Uncle Lee” may become greater than he ever intended. I’m being vague in my measly plot description for good purpose, as each scene builds with character detail and answers crucial questions as to who Lee is and why his past is so tortured. Lonergan’s screenplay intercuts flashbacks with the present narrative in a way that is initially confusing, until all the pieces are carefully aligned. Lonergan’s film, a tough, observant character drama, is initially hard to get into, as he expects the audience to soak up

the details and patiently absorb information from each scene. It reflects Lonergan’s reputation as a gifted playwright, though his approach is somewhat more taxing than cinematic. Once we finally witness the life-altering event that would cripple Affleck’s character, the film settles in and belatedly reveals itself to be a bittersweet parable about the father/son dynamic. The film has moments that are refreshing in their honesty, like a funny bit where two characters can’t remember where they parked their car and wander around in the cold weather. There’s also a moment where Lee is invited to dinner by a woman who’s clearly interested in him and he ponders whether to take her up on it. Thinking about it a moment, he then tells her no and drives off. I’ve never seen that in a movie before and appreciate the refreshing honesty of the moment. Manchester by the Sea is closer to Lonergan’s somber, rambling but engrossing second film Margaret, and not his tight, perfect directorial debut You Can Count On Me. Like Margaret, his latest is a meditation on loss and guilt, and how one person’s carrying grief on their shoulders can affect the world around them. Affleck is superb, conveying the pain of a man who feels defeated but finds new pur-

pose in becoming an active family member. The one-two punch of his 2007 arrival as a major actor in Gone Baby Gone and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is reinforced. As Lee’s brother, Kyle Chandler once again adds enormous gravity to his scenes (when did the former Early Edition actor suddenly become one of our most promising new film stars?). Michelle Williams’ supporting role is small but recalls her fierce work in Blue Valentine. Her big scene with Affleck late in the film is as good as you’ve heard, though it’s just one of many great scenes here. Of the large, impressive ensemble, newcomer Lucas Hedges is the biggest standout as Lee’s nephew. There’s also Gretchen

Mol and Matthew Broderick, who play characters so intriguing that I wanted more of them. Yet, Lonergan is wise in his decision to give them a strong introduction, then keep them at a distance. The surprising doses of humor are welcome, especially in a film this heavy. Not helping is the overbearing music score and some too-on-the-nose song choices (like “I’m Beginning to See the Light” just as things move in a positive direction). Yet, the intelligence and hard-earned sense of hope this conveys is stronger than its drawbacks. The best and worst thing about Manchester by the Sea is that Lonergan boldly never makes this journey easy on his audience. ■

Horoscope

Sign Language CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

For days, you’ve turned this idea over and over in your mind; now it’s roasted all the way through, like a pig on a spit, and still you’re no closer to a decision or conclusion. Has it ever occurred to you that your brain just doesn’t have an answer to this one? Or that it’s simply incapable of answering it? Your mind is a useful tool, but it’s ill-equipped to address primal stuff like sex, death, and love. When it comes to all that deep animal soul stuff, you’ve got to let yourself be guided by heart, gut, and loins, in whatever combination that works. Stop thinking. It’s getting you exactly nowhere. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Imagine this scenario: You’re alone on a hike deep in the woods, and you take a tumble, seriously gashing your leg. You apply pressure to the wound, but it’s not enough to staunch the bleeding. What do you do? You apply a tourniquet, thereby limiting the flow of blood to the limb until you can get suitably patched up. Other wounds–emotional, metaphorical, spiritual–require the same treatment. You’re losing copious amounts of what keeps you going. You’ve got to limit the resources flowing towards the wound–be it attitude, relationship, or faith. Either find a way to do that, or amputate. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Indulge yourself. Partake especially in all the things you enjoy that are bad for you. You’re less likely than usual to suffer negative consequences from their consumption. That doesn’t mean you’re immune to hangovers, guilt, backlash, drama, or embarrassment this week, just a lot more resistant to them. You may, of course, choose to avoid this kind of trouble altogether, but I hope you don’t; that’d be dead boring. If you’re ever going to practice hedonistic immoderation, now is a better time than most. Get to it, and don’t come back until you’re completely satisfied. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

I look back on the handful of Aries men I’ve dated with tremendous fondness; despite their imperfections, they were unfailingly exciting and romantic. I’m definitely part of the Ram fan club–that group of people who really enjoy what you have to offer. You’d forgotten we were out there, hadn’t you? I’m not surprised–admirers have been thin on the ground, lately, or eclipsed by your many critics. You haven’t lost your touch, though, as you’d begun to believe; you’ve simply lost touch with the crowd who gets and appreciates you. Find us again, won’t you? We miss you, desperately. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

I love books. I can be half-starved, counting change to buy dinner, but if I can get a book I want for the same price, I’ll go without food. I’m not one of those people who just lets books sit on a shelf for years without reading them, either. Those books get tossed into bags, carried everywhere, and read on trains, toilets, queues, and barstools, and end up dog-eared and loved. What do you love more than food? What will you sacrifice to have it in your life? Please tell me there’s something you’re that passionate about. If there isn’t, spend this week figuring out just why that is. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You’re fantastic in many ways–just possibly not in exactly the ways you wish you were. Examine that. Are you not trying hard enough, or not giving it enough time and energy? Could it be that this simply isn’t your thing? I won’t counsel you to ever give up on your dreams. But may I suggest that you take a break from this one, which may not come to fruition for a long time (if ever)? Give yourself a chance to shine right now. Do what you’re good at for a little while. Then go back to your aspirations, if you still want to. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Your most exciting and frustrating chapters have come from sort of inflicting your intensity on people who either weren’t ready for it or weren’t sure they were into

it. You love challenging people to access new heights and depths within themselves. But how often are you yourself challenged in this way? Certainly not very, especially not from other Cancers, since you recognize and are immune to all their familiar tricks and strategies. This week, however, you have a chance to dunk yourself into water that’s truly over your head. We all know how often you’ve shoved others into exactly this kind of situation. No one’s going to push you, though. The question is: do you have the chutzpah to jump?

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Leos love to lounge. Although you’re capable of summoning forth tremendous energy (enough to outshine virtually anyone else), unless you’re properly motivated you’re world-class slackers. What then is your motivation? It could be anything–a desire to create beauty, to have fun, to simply relieve your boredom–because eventually even your devoted friends will tire of entertaining you. This week, you’ve got to face facts: even though you’ve surrounded yourself with hilarious pranksters, movers, and shakers, there comes a time when it’s up to you, and only you, to make shit happen. This, darling, is that time. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

You’ve been working incredibly hard for quite some time now, but I have to ask: is it really getting you somewhere? Because sometimes Virgos can get so caught up in the activity itself that they don’t necessarily examine the results. It could turn out that you’ve been swimming furiously around and around inside a fishbowl. You’re exhausted when you finally discover you haven’t actually gone anywhere. Stop. Take a breath. Float. See where you actually are, in more detail than the usual blur you surround yourself with. Is it where you were headed? No? Better or worse than what you expected? Once you’ve assessed your progress, then (and only then) can you get yourself really (back) on track.

VOTED BEST

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Your stocks are about to skyrocket. What’s with the sudden surge in popularity? A whole host of people (who’d either forgotten or never realized) have suddenly figured out just what hot shit you are. Suddenly, legions of overnight fans are intent on drawing you and your indispensable fellows into their lives. I know you love to feel needed, but be careful; no one can meet this much need. Don’t be overwhelmed by all those clamoring for your time and attention. Stay cool and be prudent about how far you’ll go, and for whom. This is an amazing opportunity, but if you can’t keep your head, you’ll lose it instead. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

You rarely had trouble taking your medicine (actual or figurative) as a child. You pragmatically perceived the necessity and/or inevitability of what had to happen and you just got it over with. Mostly, that willingness to swallow pride and misery has stayed with you into adulthood. Thus it’s hard for you identify with those who flee their sorrows and hassles, and long for sugar to help the medicine go down. Help them anyway, won’t you? Asking them to stretch and channel your innate fortitude won’t be enough, however. Unless you stretch, too–developing compassion and losing judgment of their differences–any lesson you try to offer simply won’t stick.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

You’re an excellent protector–when you’re around. In fact, many of the people drawn to you are attracted because of the kind of safety you represent. The irony is that you’re frequently so busy having your own adventures that they’re left to fend for themselves more often than not. Fair enough–it’s not your job to shield those you love from all of life’s stresses and challenges. But recognize that you’ve been doing a lot more helping yourself and a lot less for those who need your help lately. This is a good week to tip the balance back. You’re doing okay, so giving them some sweetness and the warm comfort of your arms wouldn’t cost you much. It sure would, however, mean a lot to them.
