fan angrily tweeted at MauiTime, linking to the second letter and denouncing our story as “fake news.” At the same time, at least one of Gabbard’s opponents retweeted MauiTime’s original tweet, which asked Gabbard why she didn’t sign the letter (though anyone who actually clicked on that tweet’s link would have seen the updated story explaining everything). But that’s the question here: how many people actually looked at our reporting before retweeting and/or commenting? How many people nationwide share stories they’ve never actually read, or leave vitriolic comments after reading only a tweet or headline, solely because something appeared in their feed that seemed to conform to their biases? Hence the 2016 election, and the problem of our times. Because while I understand that propaganda has long been pernicious, I also know of Hannah Arendt, a political philosopher who wrote more intelligently on the dangers and seductions of fascism than anyone in the 20th century. “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist,” Arendt wrote. So when you see headlines saying that a poll shows that 52 percent of Republicans believe Trump won the popular vote (false– Democrat Hillary Clinton won it by more than two percentage points), be afraid for democracy. A world in which facts are fungible and people believe whatever they want to believe is a playground for strongmen
evidence and methodology used in the story? Are they clearly explained? Right now, Americans have the right to read whatever they want. It would be tragic to think this nation gave up that right out of sheer laziness.
MEDICAL MARIJUANA DISPENSARY OPENING SOON Won’t be long now until Maui finally gets a medical marijuana dispensary. Just a few more months or so, according to a news release I got last night from Maui Grown Therapies, the company cofounded by former Maui Land & Pineapple Company CEO David Cole. “Maui Grown Therapies today announced its first medical cannabis dispensary is located in the Maui Lani Village Center at 44 Pa‘a Street in Kahului,” states the press release. “The dispensary joins other medical, professional and retail businesses in the Professional Row section of the commercial development.” As far when exactly the dispensary will open, that’s still not really know (as you can see from the photo below, taken on Dec. 15, the building is still under construction). “The company expects to sell cannabis and cannabis-

If you hold that faith comes from understanding, that reason is preferable to dogma and that facts are knowable, definable things that transcend faith and bias, then you already know that we live in perilous times. It’s fashionable now to talk of the prevalence of “fake news” caused great damage during the 2016 election, but propaganda and false narratives have been with us since the birth of the republic. “You know well that government always kept a kind of standing army of news writers who without any regard to truth, or to what should be like truth, invented & put into the papers whatever might serve the minister,” Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1785. “This suffices with the mass of the people who have no means of distinguishing the false from the true paragraphs of a newspaper.” That being said, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter can and do magnify the voices of partisans and zealots who bludgeon any bit of reporting they dislike with the “fake news” hammer. This happened to me, most recently, with my Dec. 16 (online only) story on Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s not signing/signing a letter from all Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to Secretary of State John Kerry. Here are four facts about the matter: 1. On Dec. 15, 18 Democrats on the committee signed the letter to Kerry, asking him to protect State Department employees from retribution from the incoming Donald Trump administration. 2. Gabbard’s signature did NOT appear at the end of that letter. 3. This was because of a “staff-level misunderstanding,” one of Gabbard’s press aides told me. 4. Committee Democrats then sent a second letter to Kerry, only this time it included Gabbard’s signature. Points 3 and 4 became known after we originally published our story on the letter (Gabbard’s office took an unusually long time to get respond to my inquiry). But news stories evolve, which is not bad or unusual, so we updated the story online (which included careful notations to show what exactly was being updated, and why). But over the weekend, at least one Gabbard
who know only plunder and misery. The solution isn’t for more government control over the news, but rather that people actually read the news. It’s that they stop mindlessly equating the words “mainstream media” and “lies” (while there are plenty of examples throughout history when big newspapers have printed stories that turned out to be wrong, there’s a huge difference between a massive news organization staffed by professionals that goes astray while trying to report the facts and partisan miscreants who knowingly print made-up shit in hopes of steering an election). For nearly 20 years now, MauiTime has sought to report the news. Our point of view sometimes changes, but the methods we use haven’t: talk to people, gather documents, then write it up. We put a lot of work into our stories, and it’s painful to see that work go to waste when people leave comments on social media pertaining to stories they clearly haven’t read. Look, we live in dark times. Our incoming president lies like the rest of us breathe. He campaigned by appealing to ignorance and hate. He blasted his opponents for being “crooks,” then set up what may be the most corrupt administration in American history. Dealing with all this will be difficult for most

everyone, but especially painful for anyone who isn’t a straight white male. You know what counters this? Reading. Challenging your assumptions. Thinking. And as you read, ask yourself what you know of the organization that published the story. Is the author named? What about the sources for the story? Are they named? If not, does the story explain why not? And what about the

derivative products approximately 112 days after it receives a ‘Notice to Proceed with Cultivation’ from the Hawai‘i State Department of Health,” states the press release. “The company will host a series of open houses and educational events in the 2,112-sq. ft. dispensary building beginning in February 2017.” In any case, when it does finally open, the dispensary will just be a convenient threeminute walk away from both Mako’s Mart and North Shore Pizza Company, also located in the Maui Lani Village Center. Though medicinal marijuana has been legal in Hawaii since 2000, dispensaries weren’t legalized until 2015. The process of actually licensing and constructing the dispensaries has been long. “He brought so much joy through music and entertainment, to so many people. The concert and entertainment business can be very unforgiving, but Tom managed to do business as a gentleman and always with ALOHA! We owe a debt of gratitude to him for helping us to bring the stars to Maui, but we all know that it was Uncle Tom that was the true shining star.” Vento’s hardly alone in those thoughts. “I’m very sorry to hear about the passing of Uncle Tom Moffatt,” said former Maui/current Oahu musician Erin Smith. “He is a legend, and also a sweet man who gave me, and many people, several opportunities to shine. He put me onstage with Train, Ozomatli, Boyz II Men and more. He would call sometimes when something came up that he thought I would be good for. He will be truly missed.” Here’s a brief excerpt from the Hawaii News Now’s obituary on Moffatt: “Among Moffatt’s proudest accomplishments: Producing the award-winning recording of Keola and Kapono Beamer’s Honolulu City Lights, states the HNN story. “It was Moffatt’s first album for his Paradise Records,

The Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) is expanding its facilities with the purchase of the Main Street Promenade Properties in Wailuku. The recently-purchased 35,622 square foot property includes two buildings located at 2020 and 2050 Main Street. “MAPA is excited to realize the next steps in a long held dream of establishing our educational and artistic home,” said MAPA Executive & Artistic Director David C. Johnston. “The Promenade property is the next building block for conceptualizing and creating a campus to accommodate the full range of MAPA’s educational and artistic needs.” Along with MAPA’s current facility at 2027 Main Street, the recently acquired property will eventually house a theatre, rehearsal studios, classrooms, production spaces for costume and scene shops, and administrative offices. “We are thrilled about what this means for Wailuku,” said MAPA Board President Dr. Virginia Cantorna. “We believe that Wailuku is poised for a period of dynamic growth and that the performing arts will be central in creating
a vibrant community. MAPA looks forward to working with the County of Maui, Maui OnStage, Wailuku Community Association and the other Wailuku artists and businesses in creating the flagship arts district of Maui.” MAPA purchased the Main Street Promenade Properties from Robert and Lisa Joslin. The purchase was made possible through a loan from U.S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development. Members of the Oregon State University team stopped at Kihei and Kamalii Elementary; UNLV reps visited Pu‘u Kukui Elementary; and the BYU teammates went to Pomaikai Elementary. Iconic Hawaii promoter Tom Moffatt died on the night of Monday, Dec. 12 at the age of 85, Pacific Business News reported the next day. A former radio DJ, he formed A Tom Moffatt Production in 1972, and began bringing big-name stars to Hawaii and Maui concerts, including Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson and Jimi Hendrix. Maui Arts & Cultural Center President and CEO Art Vento said we all owe Moffatt tremendously. “Tom has meant so much to the entire State of Hawaii, Maui Arts & Cultural Center and me personally,” said Vento in an email.
and was released in 1978 to critical acclaim. The album, whose title song has become ubiquitous in the islands–especially around the holidays– garnered six Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including song and album of the year.” Moffatt was beloved by many in Hawaii, including those of us at MauiTime. “Tom Moffatt had a great love for music, love for Hawaii,” said MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo. “He was a statesman. He was a celebrity in his own right. He excelled at one of the toughest things to do in Hawaii. He set the bar as to how promoters were to conduct themselves in shows. Tom Moffatt brought Bob Marley to Maui in 1979. And he believed in MauiTime when we first started, and we’ll always appreciate that. He came to visit us, and he lit the room up when he was here.” -Anthony Pignataro ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

News Of The Weird ECRET-SAY ODE-KAY American gangsters traditionally use euphemisms and nicknames (“Chin,” “The Nose”) to disguise criminal activities, but among details revealed at a November murder trial in Sydney, Australia, was that members of the “Brothers 4 Life” gang might have used “pig latin.” In a phone-tapped conversation played in court, one of the men on trial was overheard cunningly telling a henchman that a colleague had been “caught with the un-gay in the ar-kay.” A helpful witness then took the stand to explain to the jury that the defendant thus knew there was “a gun in the car.” At press time, the trial was still in progress.
WE’RE DOOMED An “academic” paper composed entirely of gibberish was accepted for a lecture at the International Conference on Atomic and Nuclear Physics in Atlanta last month. Prof. Christoph Bartneck of New Zealand’s University of Canterbury said he began writing (using Apple iOS) by entering “atomic” and “nuclear” into his tablet and “randomly” following whatever “autocomplete” suggestions emerged. (Sample sentence: “The atoms of a better universe will have the right for the same as you are the way we shall have to be a great place...” Conclusion: “Power is not a great place for a good time.”)

Divorcing couples who cannot decide who gets to keep a treasured family home leave the decision to a judge, and in October, a court in Moscow ordered a couple to build a brick wall dividing in two their expensive house in an elite neighborhood. Apparently contractors’ measurements have been taken, and the couple has assumed dominion over their respective areas, even to the extent that a friend of the wife had become “trapped” on the husband’s side and prevented from leaving until she called emergency services. Furthermore, the wife must have a second stairway built, as the existing one is on the husband’s side.
ensure their trial testimony, but rarely do it to actual crime victims. In December 2015, the Houston, Texas, district attorney obtained such a warrant jailing a rape victim (“Jenny”) to secure her testimony against a serial rapist she could identify, because Jenny, exceptionally fragile, was hesitant. She finally took the stand, and the rapist is now serving multiple life terms, but Jenny’s added trauma (especially since police mistakenly placed her into the jail’s general population instead of a separate wing) provoked her to file a lawsuit against the DA, which is still in progress. And in November, likely to Jenny’s satisfaction, the DA, Devon Anderson, failed re-election.
MOUTH-TO-MOUTH MAYBE SAVES CARP! In November, an 18-year-old man who allegedly tried to steal koi carp fish from a holding tank (pending their return to a pond at Castle Park in Colchester, England) botched the job, resulting in the deaths of most of them, including some of the oldest and most visitor-friendly of the species. Park rangers managed to rescue several, and one ranger even gave mouthto-mouth resuscitation to three carp. (A biologist told BBC News that carp are noted for surviving on low oxygen and might not have needed the mouth-to-mouth.)
MORE SPERM WARS Most couples who create embryos to freeze for the future agree that the consent of both is required for actual use. Two former couples are on opposite sides of the issue: Actor Sofia Vergara’s ex-boyfriend wants their embryo brought to term (but she does not), and Missouri woman Jalesia McQueen wants two she created with then-husband Justin Gadberry brought to term (but he does not). In the latter case, an appeals court ruled for Gadberry in November (though the couple already have two children from frozen embryos). In the Vergara case, the ex, Nick Loeb, is trying for an extraordinary court ruling based on his “inability to otherwise procreate” (since two subsequent girlfriends adamantly chose abortions).

A 23-year-old man in Tampa, Florida, was hanging out with his cousin in September, and nearby were a gun and a bulletproof vest–and the result was predictable. According to police, the first man donned the vest and said he wondered whether it “still worked”; the cousin picked up the gun and said, “Let’s see.” The cousin, Alexandro Garibaldi, 24, was charged with manslaughter.

CHIMPS HAVE RIGHTS, TOO The debate over whether animals have “rights” enforceable by judges took a sharp turn upward in November when a judge in Argentina ordered the reluctant Mendoza Zoo to release a chimpanzee (Cecilia) to a sanctuary in Brazil because the zoo had denied her the “right” to animal “essence”–to socialize with other chimps (since her last two playmates had died more than two years earlier). Mendoza Zoo was heavily criticized following the death last summer of Arturo, dubbed the “world’s saddest polar bear,” since he had suffered an even worse fate, with no playmates for 22 years. ■

it was raining, but what gave you the idea that instead of returning your shopping cart to the corral or even the store, you’d just park it in front of my car after you loaded up your truck? I was walking across the parking lot, not really believing that I was watching you do that. Your laziness meant I had to unload my groceries into my car, then return YOUR shopping cart to the corral–I certainly wasn’t going to be jackass and park it front of some other poor slob’s car. 'Move The Road'

Activists stopped a bad seawall project in Olowalu, but their work isn’t done yet. BY ASHLEY PROBST rotect our coastline,” “Move the road,” and “For our keiki,” are just some of the messages displayed along the Olowalu coastline by activist group Malama Olowalu. Months after the organization helped halt the construction of a seawall project planned by the Department of Transportation (DOT) that would have seriously damaged the nearby aquatic environment, the signs are still there. This is good, because there’s still work to be done. “Malama Olowalu is currently working on a community-based plan and will be hosting community meetings in January,” said Tiare Lawrence of Malama Olowalu. “Our goal is to get the community behind

a preferred realignment and rally support ahead of time to help speed up the process.” Malama Olowalu has been advocating for a more environmentally friendly option to this project since as early as Aug. 8 and has continued to reach out to residents and government officials to ensure everyone’s voices are heard. The result was that DOT agreed to re-stripe the road instead of building a costly seawall and to replace the rotting guardrail behind the Jersey barriers along Honoapi‘ilani Highway, according to Albert Perez, executive director of the Maui Tomorrow Foundation, which also fought the seawall project. “They’ve gained quite a lot of space,” Perez said during a phone interview last week. “They didn’t need to do the revet-
ment in the first place. They didn’t know that they had the room they had.” Perez said that during Malama Olowalu’s demonstrations, he and a colleague went out during the night, when traffic was light, and measured the road. “That’s when I realized there was enough room to move the road without reconstructing it,” Perez said. “Then DOT Director Ford Fuchigami came and met with us. That was really good.” The DOT also met with community members during a public forum held at the University of Hawaii, Maui campus Oct. 5, and the main topic of discussion was what is being done about the erosion of Honoapi‘ilani Highway. With the effects of global warming posing a greater threat to island communities such as ourselves, as mentioned by Gov.
David Ige during his opening speech at the community meeting, it is vital to take any necessary precautions that will help protect residents and visitors from the issues that will come with rising sea levels. Originally, the state’s plan was to erect seawalls and place rock revetments along the Olowalu coastline in order to prevent further damage to the vital roadway. Similar structures have been implemented in various locations along the highway between Ukumehame and Mile Post 17, but these plans are being reevaluated after many individuals, the aforementioned organizations and legislators took a stand against the implementation of such barriers. “We were getting contacted by concerned community members and Maui
as many stakeholders in our community were very supportive of what we were standing there for.” At the community meeting, Lawrence humorously thanked Fuchigami for not arresting the activists while they were camping at Olowalu and Fuchigami assured everyone that he never intended to put anyone in handcuffs. Although they were fighting for a worthy cause, West Maui Rep. Angus McKelvey
“
so it’s going to take a lot of community support and planning to make sure that the DOT listens to our concerns and moves the road in an area that benefits us environmentally, economically and culturally,” Lawrence said. “That’s what we’re going to work on in the next year is coming up with a solid plan that is supported by the community, the residents, the lineal descendants and the different organizations committed to protecting the environmen-

said he was worried about how some community members may have been reacting to their demonstrations, which motivated him to contact Gov. Ige immediately. “The activists caused the mother of all traffic jams,” McKelvey said. “I live in Lahaina towards the south end of town and I missed all of my appointments, including meeting with them, because the traffic was completely out of control. What worried me was it was turning the community against them and [their cause], and that alarmed me, so that’s why I acted promptly

tal concerns in Olowalu.” Sniffen said he appreciates that the community groups reached out to the DOT to come up with a solution that prioritized everyone’s needs, which include protecting both the roadway and the beach areas. “We’re working it out all together, trying to make sure that we hit alternatives that could fulfill the number one purpose of our doing the project–that’s protecting the roadway itself to ensure that sole connection for West Maui is maintained,” Sniffen said.

Tomorrow,” said Deputy Director of Highways for the DOT, Ed Sniffen, in a statement to MauiTime. “They contacted us with concerns about the project itself. After that, legislatures from both the county and the state started calling as well, as they were being pushed by their constituencies.” During a breakout session at the forum, Fuchigami publicly announced that his department would restripe the highway, pushing the road inland as much as possible. “We found that we have sufficient space within our paved right of way to provide a six foot shoulder on both sides of our highway and two 11-foot lanes,” Sniffen said. “Looking at the rates of erosion over the past five years, we’re comfortable that this gives us a minimum of three years for us to relook at this area and how we should be treating the protection of the roadway.” The re-striping allows the state to figure out a viable long-term solution, which will eventually include realigning the road from Olowalu all the way to the end of the Pali. But Fuchigami stated that the DOT will be putting the Pali portion on the back burner and solely focusing on Olowalu for the next three years. The DOT has canceled their contract with the construction company Goodfellow Bros. and the project is being redesigned. They’re continuing to collaborate with community leaders like Lawrence and Perez, both of whom will be sent all future drafts of project ideas to provide their input. Lawrence, along with two other individual plaintiffs and the Maui Tomorrow Foundation, filed a lawsuit against the DOT in Environmental Court Aug. 18 to keep the seawall project from moving forward. “There were several things that worried us,” Perez said. “One was that there had been a federal designation of critical habitats for monk seals, and that’s basically the entire West Maui coastline. But also, there are [fishermen, cultural practitioners and surfers] who use that area.” As part of their agreement with the DOT, the plaintiffs agreed to drop their lawsuit. Perez said it’s important that everyone gained some time to evaluate the situation. To show that the general public cares about maintenance of and accessibility to this beach, Malama Olowalu helped to organize a demonstration where local activists camped out at Olowalu in order to stall construction. Participants waved to traffic while holding signs that read, “Seawalls kill our beaches and reefs,” “Save our surf,” and many other messages such as the ones that can still be seen along the Honoapi‘ilani Highway. Lawrence said that approximately 300 people stopped by to show support, drop off food and water or just to talk story … but not everyone was happy with their presence. “We do know that one of the contractors called the police on us and they were trying to have us removed so that they could put their equipment in the area where we were camping,” Lawrence said. “But as far as the police were concerned, they did a great job at making sure we were safe and they were great to work with. They listened to our concerns and I felt through this experience that the police, some of our elected officials, as well

with the governor.” On Sept. 19, after eight days of people camping out and two days after McKelvey and County Councilmember Don Couch sent separate letters to Gov. Ige expressing their concerns, Fuchigami visited the site at Olowalu and it was determined that the project would be halted until they can implement a solution that will service residents, visitors and legislatures alike. “I know that the real work starts now,
At the community meeting, some residents spoke about possible solutions that they would like to see, which included extending the Lahaina Bypass and making that the state highway while allowing for Honoapi‘ilani Highway to act as a scenic road or be turned into a bike path. “I would like the road to be realigned on the existing old cane haul road, in some areas,” Lawrence said in a statement to MauiTime. “In regards to the current road,
I’d like to see a section preserved specifically for a bike path or a walking path and then the remaining I’d like to see taken out and have native Hawaiian vegetation that supports cultural replenishment in those areas, as well as park space and just allowing more area for our families to have a safe place to enjoy the ocean.” Sniffen said that this would be possible if a new roadway is constructed that fulfills the state system’s needs because then the existing roadway would be turned over to the county, which would get to decide how it would be used. Perez believes it’s a viable solution to do a little bit at a time, in the worst erosion spots because it will cost less and we won’t be killing our reefs, even if the road does have to meander. One especially troubling spot is near Mile Marker 14, where waves often crash over the existing seawall, splashing cars with highly corrosive salt water. “People have [also] seen monk seals try to haul themselves to the road,” Perez said. McKelvey said that he believes the solution will need to be a combination of relocating the road, as well as restoring the natural beach and coastal areas. “You put one wall in, then the sand erosion occurs to the beach next door, now that’s exposed to the ocean, now a wall goes in there and the sand erosion keeps going up the coast,” McKelvey said. “If we can move [the sand] back in and remove those walls, you won’t have that situation of the ocean chewing at the highway and you won’t have all the sand disappear all over again.” Although the final project has not yet been decided upon, Sniffen said that all of the options are on the table. “For [the realignment] to go forward, it depends on many things,” Sniffen said. “One, the environmental clearances–impacts that any realignment could have on the environment itself have to be considered. Second, the cost of any realignment has to be considered. The position of the Highways Division is I will not build any new roads until I know I have sufficient funding to maintain the ones we already have.” For Perez, the answer is simple. “Retreat is the best option,” he said. “On Maui, we have room to retreat.” Perez, Lawrence and McKelvey have all committed to helping the DOT find funding in order to make the road realignments possible, and they have been reaching out to stakeholders and larger organizations such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and various fish and wildlife groups. Regardless, everyone involved has expressed immense gratitude for the communication and cooperation that has come from all sides. “I think it’s really significant that the director of the DOT was willing to reach out and listen to the community, even during active lawsuit,” Perez said. “I think that made all the difference and I really appreciate Ford Fuchigami for his willingness to be open and listen.” ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' It’s visually impressive but vaguely disappointing
★★★★★ Rated PG-13/ 134 Min.
A
lthough the onscreen title of the new Star Wars prequel is simply Rogue One, it should have read Star Wars: Episode 3.5: The Middle Years. Garth Edwards’ film bridges 2005’s Revenge of the Sith and 1977’s A New Hope, with a tale of rebels who undertake a deadly mission to steal the plans to build the Death Star. Like Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla, Rogue One is both visually impressive and vaguely disappointing. After a dreary, lumpy start, it finally takes off as an action movie. What never ignites are the characters, who are one-dimensional at best and fail to fully engage our emotions. The Star Wars films always have always stood out for their great storytelling and sporting lovable characters. Here, the protagonists are a charisma-free cast of heroes. It’s refreshing to see such an international assortment of performers, but none of them can hold the screen like Harrison Ford, or even Ewan McGregor. Everyone has been better elsewhere, starting with a surprisingly one-note Felicity Jones and an out-of-his-element Diego Luna. Riz Ahmed is on hand to recite plot exposition and Forest Whitaker’s strange turn as Saw Gerrera
(he inhales oxygen from a mask like Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet) is a bit much. Martial artist and Ip Man star Donnie Yen has the most interesting character, as his blind warrior (shades of Zatoichi) acknowledges The Force as a full-on religious belief and not simply a mystical weapon. However, seeing Yen fight against bulky storm troopers is like watching Jackie Chan fighting department store mannequins. While the giant AT-AT Walkers were imposing, startling war machines in The Empire Strikes Back, they were far more striking in the snowy Hoth than the tropical climate of Rogue One. That may be the nerdiest sentence I’ve ever written in my life. The eerie, near-perfect CGI recreation of a now deceased actor, reprising a famous Star Wars role, is the film’s best special effect. On the other hand, this method of getting new performances from actors who are no longer young and/or alive flops in the very last scene. I won’t give either appearance away but it showcases a decades-old fear of actor likenesses being recycled and manipulated by CGI. Love it or hate it, this method of digital trickery has never been done better. Ben Mendelsohn provides great villainy as the wicked Krennic, though leave it to Darth Vader to steal the entire movie with just two scenes. Vader is no longer played
Your reviewer said WHAT about our movie?!
by David Prowse (nor, to the delight of fanboys everywhere, Hayden Christensen) but still voiced by the incomparable James Earl Jones. Vader makes a terrific entrance in soupy white light and shares a great sequence with Mendelsohn. Much later, there’s a mean, scary sequence (the film’s best) that reminds us why Vader is one of cinema’s greatest villains. Michael Giacchino’s score effectively mimics cues from John Williams’ music from the first Star Wars and creates a sonic bridge. Yet, his score also frustrates, as we wish he’d stop teasing us and just play the Williams music. The lack of an opening crawl is jarring and sends an odd message. If Disney is suggesting that this is minor league, merely A Star Wars Story,
and not worthy of the traditional scroll, then why should we care? Rogue One is far better than Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, for example, but I share the company belief that this is a lesser installment. I’ve been a die-hard Star Wars fan my entire life–it was the first movie I ever saw and seeing it for the first time is the oldest memory I have. Rogue One is pretty good most of the time but didn’t capture my imagination like the other installments. There’s lots of nostalgia fuel but little charm in this one. The bold, dark qualities don’t matter if you don’t care who lives or dies. Despite the noteworthy death count at the film’s end, I never felt much of anything for the heroic rebels. On the other hand, that Darth Vader sure is awesome! ■

Horoscope
Sign Language CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Many people believe they’d love a Capricorn partner–until they actually get one. At that point they’re often disappointed when you don’t meet their unrealistic expectations. What you can offer: a reasonably high degree of security, sex drive, and loyalty, among other things. Where you often fall short: time and attention. This week, cancel your personal PR. Don’t spin this stuff. You are what you are, and you need someone who appreciates that, since you’re not going to fundamentally change. Make sure whoever’s interested gets the entire, honest picture right now, or they’ll be hellish drama later.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
When it comes time to take a leap of faith, it doesn’t make a bit of difference whether you do it smiling, with wide-open eyes, or screw them shut and scream the whole way down. It’s great if you can work yourself up to a degree of trust and acceptance before you jump, and certainly more fun than taking the plunge while terrified and full of dread. But your attitude is of secondary importance this week. Your memory of the terror will fade, while the pride remains. What matters at the moment is that you actually go for it, because if you don’t do it now, you probably never will–and that, my dear, is something you will certainly always remember, and regret.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
You’re as incorruptible as they come. Aquarians are less likely to be thrown off-course by power, wealth or fame. Having acquired one or more of these, most of you are happy to carry on mostly as before. That isn’t to say you’re completely immune to the personalityskewing effects of these influences, just more resistant than most. What does screw you up? Love, of course. You’ll do shit you’d normally never consider just to understand, pursue, or keep love in your life. This week, check that behavior. If a million bucks can’t buy your soul, why should another person be able to (often without even trying)? PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
That person who keeps calling your number and not leaving messages… that was me. Well, maybe not me, but it certainly wasn’t the person you were hoping it was. Unfortunately, if you ever get to the bottom of the tantalizing mystery you’re currently facing, you’ll probably be quite disappointed with the anticlimactic results. So, what to do? I suggest just picking up the phone and calling the person you wish would call you. In other words, forget the dissatisfying reality and make your fantasy real. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Pollsters and call-center surveyors would be lost without you guys. You always have an opinion about everything, so most of you are thrilled to step up to the plate and deliver it. What surprises you is when people are shocked, offended or outraged by what you have to say. Don’t be put off by negative reactions to your ideas this week, Aries. Listen to them and consider them, of course–but don’t let them keep you from speaking your piece. What you’ve got to say matters–not because of its content, but because you’re willing to say it, and what that says about you. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Would you feel validated, betrayed, or simply scornful if I suggested that Taureans were astrologically predisposed towards weight gain? Don’t get me wrong–I’ve met my share of skinny Taureans. But generally, many of you are blessed with more solid builds. Naturally, genetics matters more than astrology in this case, but a Taurean’s normal predisposition towards luxury, hedonism, and sensuality isn’t likely to help your modeling career. I’m not saying give up. We should all keep trying to be the people we hope to be, regardless of obstacles. I’m just suggesting: don’t be so hard on yourself if you fall slightly short.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Everyone’s heard dozens of bizarre conspiracy theories involving yeti, crop circles, illuminati, psychedelic mushroom spores from outer space, and so on, but most of us don’t take that shit too seriously, viewing it mostly as intriguing and entertaining, but not lifechanging. You, too, are definitely guilty of cultivating your own strange pet theories–about your boss, coworkers, lover, neighbors, etc. But I wouldn’t share them this week (at least not with anyone even remotely involved. It would only get you into trouble– the kind it’s not so easy to squirm out of.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Virgos have a reputation as the most practical signs in the zodiac, but it’s just not true. Yeah, sure, you’re efficient, pragmatic, and have more energy than any two other people. But you’re also prone to eccentricities that are more esoteric than truly concrete. I’m certainly not going to condemn your veganism, herbal medicine, aggressive yoga routine, or penchant to read astrology columns. But it doesn’t necessarily promote your rep as the no-nonsense workhorse some people think you are. This is, however, a good thing! All work and no weirdness is dull. This week, play up what’s strange about you, not what makes you “normal.” LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
This week is all about playing the wait-and-see-game. You might wake up to inclement weather, but assuming the day is shot and canceling all your fantastic plans would be a mistake. If you’re flexible and play it by ear, you’ll discover that the shit weather will probably clear up in a few hours, thus enabling you to continue with a brilliant day–provided you haven’t already screwed it up by calling it off. Chances are that serenely awaiting a change in circumstance will work out better than the original arrangements would have. In other words, be patient. Don’t jump the gun–you’ll only end up shooting yourself in the foot. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Your behavior, at certain points in your life, could be described as saintly. Conversely, you’ve also had your share of equally slutty or otherwise devilish moments. Some of those you encounter this week are likely to misunderstand or despise some of your past behavior (you may be surprised at how many privately object to the saintly stuff). However, don’t apologize or otherwise feel pressured to justify yourself. I love your usual take-it-or-leave-it attitude. Don’t change that now. Those asses don’t get it, they’re not worth it.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
If I consume caffeine after 8pm, I’m up ‘til dawn the next morning. I’ve learned this the hard way, so now I’m judicious and prudent when it comes to drinking coffee, tea, or cola. You’ve a similar sensitivity, albeit to something slightly more esoteric–bad news, relationship drama, loneliness, horror flicks, or whatever. You’re not, however, very practical about controlling your exposure to it. That’s got to change–for your own wellbeing, as well as the happiness of all those close to you. You can’t control how full of shit the world is, but you can regulate how much of that harshness you experience, and when. Take charge of your negativity-consumption. You’ll suffer a lot less, and so will we.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Bide your time and don’t freak. This week you’re quite likely to encounter some tremendous obstacle, suffer someone’s disapproval, or slam into a seemingly immovable wall. Losing your shit would mean losing your one shot at detonating the obstacle, securing approval, or shattering the wall. A powerful, unexpected ally (someone you could never solicit, properly anticipate, or control) is likely to step in to help you out, but s/he’ll take some time getting around to it, and won’t bother if you’re too busy freaking out to accept the help. Relax. Patience and cool, at the moment, are all you need. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
