Mmm... Power
ALL HAIL MIKE WHITE! I gotta hand it to Maui County Councilmember Mike White: he’ll do what he needs to do to maintain power. Undoubtedly a student of Machiavelli, he’s spent the last two years as Maui County Council chairperson clearly more willing to be feared than loved. After all, he seized control of the council back in January 2015 through what then-Council Chairperson Gladys Baisa called a “coup,” allegedly orchestrated by White and Councilmembers Don Guzman and Riki Hokama. There have been many changes on the Council since then (Guzman, who became Vice Chair, has since become one of White’s adversaries), but White’s thirst for power remains unquenched. Indeed, in a bold act of hubris, the agenda for the Council’s Jan. 2 meeting–the first that will include newly elected Councilmembers Alika Atay, Kelly King and Yuki Lei Sugimura–showed that he already crowned himself Chair (an act that drew ethics complaints from Shaka Movement’s Mark Sheehan and the Hawaii Alliance for Progressive Action, though Corporation Counsel Pat Wong said that White’s action was fine). Though the November 2016 election drastically changed the County Council, the outcome of the vote for Council Chair was never really in doubt. There are now four councilmembers that appeared on the SAFE Action Fund– which backed slow growth, anti-GMO policies–though Guzman had been instrumental to White’s taking power away from Baisa just two years ago. Combined with the five so-called pro-establishment members (White, Hokama, Stacy Crivello, Bob Carroll and Sugimura), that locks in a tight 5-4 council split. There’s literally no margin of error on big votes, which means Chair White will have to police his votes pretty much non-stop (which probably explains why White dumped Guzman as Vice Chair in favor of Carroll). The bad blood between Guzman and Cochran on one side and White on the other boiled over at the Jan. 2 meeting, which started at 2pm and lasted well beyond 3am. At 10:30, an obviously tired and cranky Mayor Alan Arakawa, who was running the meeting until the vote on Chair could
take place, blurted out that one of Cochran’s requests was “bullshit.” After gasps of shock filled the chamber, Arakawa said, “Hey, I call it as I see it. Bullshit is bullshit.” The SAFE-backed councilmembers didn’t have the votes to stop White from getting control of the chair again, but they made him crawl over broken glass to get to it. “White has been a good leader and he’s a good man,” Guzman said after more than 60 people–the vast majority opposed to White–testified. But after describing recent moves by White as him “fearful of what would happen if he lost control,” Guzman thundered that “things need to change!” “Those good ol’ boy, back days are gone,” Guzman said. “I’ll fight all the way through if I have to kiss his ring.” Guzman’s list of recent transgressions by White is considerable: the creation of his Mauicouncil.org website (which is his personal website but still contains the County of Maui seal), his unilaterally sacking people from the ostensibly independent, non-political Office of Council Services (OCS) and a Dec. 29 statement White posted on his website accusing Guzman, Cochran and King of conspiring against him– statements Cochran called “flat-out lies.” “Shortly after the election, Councilmember Robert Carroll informed me that he had been approached by Councilmember Elle Cochran offering him a chairmanship of the Council with the support of the other members supported by the Ohana Coalition [SAFE Action Fund],” White had written. “In a subsequent discussion with Mr. Car-
roll, Ms. Cochran suggested that if he joined their majority he would have to discuss with Councilmember Don Guzman as to which one of them would be chair… Through these actions, it was clear that Councilmembers Guzman and Cochran were trying to gather a new majority for the next Council term, but did not have the support of at least five of the councilmembers-elect.” Later in the same post, White called his opponents “vindictive” and accuses them of “lashing out with nasty personal attacks.” Even if White’s right about Cochran and Guzman trying to convince Carroll to join their cause, why is that bad, given the manner in which White first became Chair two years ago? First, Guzman, Cochran and King made a series of amendments nominating virtually everyone else on the dais except White to be Chair. All failed (though Carroll refused to vote for himself to be chair, he later had no problem voting for himself to be vice chair). Next, Guzman, Cochran and King attempted to call for a public hearing on the Chair selection issue, but Arakawa, after hearing from Wong that the County Charter demanded they select a Chair that night, decided to ignore the hearing request. After that, White finally won a 5-4 vote to become Chair and Carroll won a 6-3 vote to be Vice Chair. Surprisingly, White backed down off his proposed sweeping changes to the committee system that would have reduced some to a mere five members and ensured that SAFEbacked members held no majorities on any of them (a future public hearing will determine committee memberships). Unfortunately, White also made permanent his appointment Sandy Baz to be director of the Office of Council Services– who had been hired on White’s orders just a month ago on the assurance that he’d only be a “temporary” staffer at OCS–sealing the fate of former OCS Director David Raatz, one of the County’s most honest officials. White’s new governing coalition, given the recent closure of the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar plantation, is ominous. Owner Alexander & Baldwin (A&B) now has 37,000 acres of prime land to play with, and what happens to that land– and the laws governing how the county does planning–will be some of the key issues facing the new County Council. When you add up all the contributions
Overheard “If they’re in the ocean, it’s because they’re hungry.” -Guy at the Maui Ocean Center, Jan. 1
that Alexander & Baldwin’s political action committee gave White’s five-member voting bloc since 2010, you get a total of $26,000. But when you add up all of A&B HI PAC’s contributions to the four Ohana members, you get just $6,000 (and all of that went to Guzman). It will be fascinating in the coming weeks to see which committees council members sympathetic to the interests of Alexander & Baldwin will control. Given how hardline and vindictive White's original agenda was, it's hard to imagine he'll give SAFE-backed councilmembers much.
LC BUTTHURT OVER MACC’S THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER SHOW The Maui County Department of Liquor Control has been known to get butthurt over the dumbest things, but this takes the cake. The department just posted the agenda for the upcoming Liquor Control Adjudication Board hearing on Jan. 5, 2017, and it has just one item, dealing with two counts pertaining to the Thunder From Down Under show at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) back in June. Thunder From Down Under is an Australian show that features–and I’m quoting from their website–”chiseled bodies, seductive dance routines, cheeky humor and boy-nextdoor charm.” It’s apparently a fun show, but it would seem our own LC wasn’t amused. Rather than try to describe the important legal issues at hand, I’ll just quote from the agenda: “Count 1: On June 8, 2016 at approximately 8:00 p.m., MAUI ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER dba MAUI ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER, a restaurant general licensee, did permit entertainers to expose to view any portion of the cleft of the buttocks or genitals, contrary to Section 08-101-23(d) of the Rules of the Liquor Commission, County of Maui. “Count 3: On June 8, 2016 at approximately 8:00 p.m., MAUI ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER dba MAUI ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER, a restaurant general licensee, did permit entertainers to perform acts which simulates sexual intercourse, contrary to Section 08-101-23(f)(1) of the Rules of the Liquor Commission, County of Maui.” No one from the MACC chose to comment on the LC complaint. The agenda lists Counts 1 and 3, but no Count 2, which would seem to indicate that something was dropped in a plea deal (the MACC is pleading no contest to the charges). But one woman I spoke to who saw the show in June found the allegations against the MACC absurd. “We saw bottoms, but that’s part of the deal, right?” said the woman who asked that we not use her name. “But I see more at the beach. I saw no genitals whatsoever, and we stayed until the very end. They were incredibly professional. It’s a show!” ■ editor@mauitime.com + @apignataro For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

CARLY SCOTT MURDER TRIAL ENDS WITH GUILTY VERDICT

CORAL REEF FISH SPECIES NAMED FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA A new species of coral reef fish has been named after President Barack Obama. The fish, whose scientific name
ful reef fishes popular in the marine aquarium fish trade. There are two other species in the genus Tosanoides, both from the tropical northwestern Pacific Ocean, including southern Japan. Males of the new species have a distinctive spot on the dorsal fin near the tail, which is blue around the edge and red with yellow stripes in the center. The new fish is also unusual in that it is the only known species of coral reef fish endemic to the Monument, meaning the species is not found anywhere else on Earth. All other reef fish species found within Papah‘naumoku‘kea also occur either in the main Hawaiian Islands or Japan. “Endemic species are unique contributions to global biodiversity,” said NOAA scientist Randall Kosaki, chief scientist of the research cruise and co-author of the study. “With the onslaught of climate change, we are at risk of losing some of these undiscovered species before we even know they exist.” The new fish was first seen and collected on a dive to 300 feet at Kure Atoll, 1,200 miles northwest of Honolulu. Kure Atoll is the northernmost emergent land of the Hawaiian Islands, and is the highest latitude coral atoll in the world. This is the second new species of fish named from Papahanaumokuakea this year. In August, Pyle and Kosaki published the description of a new species of butterfly-

A wall-pulsating gasp shook a standingroom-only courtroom Wednesday, Dec. 28 as one of Maui’s longest and most lurid trials concluded with a unanimous guilty verdict returned against Steven Capobianco for the murder of Carly “Charli” Scott and the burning of her truck in February 2014. It was as if Scott’s family and friends had been holding their collective breaths for the past two years, as the case lumbered through the legal system, then exploded in relief and tears when they realized that their hopes had been realized. Such a verdict had seemed unlikely earlier in the month, when the jury told Judge Joseph Cardoza on Dec. 13 that it had taken three votes and was unable to reach a decision because “we are too divided.” What happened in the jury room in the days that followed won’t be known until a final portion of the trial is concluded to determine the severity of Capobianco’s sentence. As the gallery in the fourth floor courtroom waited for the verdict, the defendant sat impassively—as he has through most of the seven-month trial—some picking at his fingers the only sign of nervousness. At the guilty verdict, he lowered his head and his aunt quickly left the courtroom. His grandmother, his sole supportive presence through most of the trial, sat pale and redeyed–perhaps the only person in the courtroom not celebrating the jury’s conclusion. The five-month pregnant Scott disappeared on Feb. 9, 2014. At the time, Capobianco told police that she had taken
him to retrieve his broken truck some three miles past Keanae and had followed him back to Haiku, the last place he saw her. None of that was true: Capobianco’s truck was never broken down, and Scott’s clothes, a few bone fragments and a maggot-covered blanket were found in Nuaailua Bay several days later. Despite that “big lie,” as his defense lawyer described it (suggesting that the two had instead been driving to a drug deal), the lack of hard evidence against Capobianco made the prosecution’s case difficult and its path toward conclusion long. Jury screening began May 23. Since then, some 59 days of testimony was heard, 76 witnesses were called and 450 pieces of evidence presented. The single piece of DNA evidence—a strand of hair matched to Capobianco found in the pocket of a pair of jeans stained with Scott’s blood—was never entered as evidence because the results weren’t provided to the defense in a timely manner. After the brief hiccup in their 15-day deliberation, jurors were stoic during the verdict and strongly affirmed their decision when individually polled at the defense’s request. They’re not done yet. Today, court resumes to present testimony in support of an “enhanced sentence,” due to the “heinous” nature of the crime. It’s expected to take anywhere from two hours to one day.
is Tosanoides obama, was discovered during a June 2016 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research expedition to Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Scientists from the Bishop Museum, NOAA and the Association for Marine Exploration published a description of the fish Dec. 21 during the last weeks of Obama’s term of office; the study was published in the open-access scientific journal ZooKeys. “We named this fish after President Obama to recognize his efforts to protect and preserve the natural environment, including the expansion of the Papahanaumokuakea,” said Richard Pyle, a Bishop Museum scientist and lead author of the study. “This expansion adds a layer of protection to one of the last great wilderness areas on Earth.” On Aug. 26, Obama expanded the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument at the urging of Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, Native Hawaiian leaders, conservationists and many marine scientists. At 582,578 square miles, it’s the largest permanent marine protected area on Earth. On Sept. 1, Obama was given a picture of the fish that now bears his name dur-

ing his trip to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge within the Monument. The photograph was presented to Obama by famed undersea explorer Sylvia Earle, and the exchange will be featured in the National Geographic film Sea of Hope: America’s Underwater Treasures, scheduled to be released Jan. 15, 2017. The small yellow and pink fish is a kind of basslet, a group that includes many color-
fish based on specimens collected at Pearl and Hermes Atoll earlier this year. Elsewhere, Obama also has a trapdoor spider, a speckled freshwater darter (fish) and an extinct lizard named after him. -Suzanne Kayian ■ editor@mauitime.com For more news articles, visit: mauitime.com/news

News Of The Weird HOLES AGAINST HUMANITY The rebellion against the absurdities of Black Friday this year by the organization Cards Against Humanity came in the form of raising money to dig a pointless hole in the ground. During the last week of November, people “contributed” $100,573, with Cards digging initially for 5.5 seconds per donated dollar. In 2015, according to an NPR report, Cards raised $71,145 by promising to do “absolutely nothing” with it, and the year before, $180,000 by selling bits of bull feces. Asked why Cards doesn’t just give the money to charity, a spokesperson asked why donors themselves don’t give it to charity. “It’s [their] money.”

New York City’s Department of Parks and Recreation has completed its two-year project of assigning ID numbers (with arboreal characteristics) to every one of the 685,781 trees in the city’s five boroughs. More than 2,300 volunteers walked the streets, then posted each tree’s location, measurements, Google Street View image, and ecological benefits for the surrounding neighborhoods (rainwater retained, air pollution reduced). Privacy activists hope the National Security Agency is not inspired by this.

Though the presidential election of 2016 was certainly more volatile than usual, one reaction to the outcome was the apparent ease with which some in America’s next generation of college-trained leaders were sidelined by self-described emotional pain. The Wall Street Journal reported that special attention was given by administrators at Tufts University, the University of Kansas and Ivy League Cornell, among other places, where their young adults could “grieve” over the election and seek emotional support, such as use of “therapy dogs” in Kansas and, at the University of Michigan, the availability of Play-Doh and coloring books for distraction.
IRONY The county executive in Cleveland, Ohio, complained in November of lack of funds (because the county’s credit is “maxed out”) for necessary renovations to its well-known
sports and concert venue, the Quicken Loans Arena. (2) In November, after a companion asked Victoria Vanatter, 19, what bloodsucking was like, she let him slice her arm with a razor to have a taste, but the two then argued, and Vanatter allegedly grabbed a knife and slashed him for real. Police in Springfield, Missouri, arrested her after both people were stitched up at a hospital.
RECURRING IRONY The most recent city to schedule a civic-minded conference with community leaders to discuss options for affordable, accessible housing in a meeting place that was highly unfriendly to the nonambulatory was Toronto, in November. The first proposed site required a seven-step walk-up, but following complaints, officials relocated it -- to a building whose only rest room was in the elevator-free basement.
QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS The Space World theme park in Kitakyushu, Japan, opened a popular (with visitors) iceskating rink in November, but was forced to close it two weeks later for being hugely unpopular (with social media critics). The park had placed 5,000 fish and other sea animals in the ice deck of its “Freezing Port” rink so that skaters could look down as they glided along, gazing at marvels of nature (all dead in advance, of course, purchased from a fish market). Nonetheless, the park manager apologized for grossing out so many people and closed the exhibit (melting the ice and conducting an “appropriate religious service” for the fishes’ souls).
NOT HELPING The government-run Channel 2M in Morocco apologized for a segment of its daily TV program Sabahiyat that featured a makeup artist demonstrating techniques for obscuring blemishes on women subjected to domestic violence. The model being worked on had been made up with a swollen face and faked bruises. Said the host, “We hope these beauty tips will help [victims] carry on with your daily life.” Bonus: The program aired Nov. 23–two days before International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
CUNNING STRATEGIES Shogo Takeda, 24, said he desperately needed a job at the elevator maintenance company in Yokohama at which he was interviewing (with the president) on Nov. 10, but somehow could not resist taking the man’s wallet from a bag when the president briefly left the room. Takeda had dropped off his resume beforehand and thus was quickly apprehended. And Mark Revill, 49, pleaded guilty in November to stalking the actor Keira Knightley. He said he had become frustrated that his flood of love letters was being ignored and so approached the front door of Knightley’s London home and “meowed” through the letterbox. ■

The Challenges That
Free The

or more than two years, Maui’s branch of the Free The Nipple organization has been strutting their topless selves at Rainbow Park and down Baldwin Avenue in Paia Town. This past August, they walked down towards the Cove at Baldwin Beach, and many onlookers might have been wondering, “Who are these topless hippies? And, why are they cruising through Paia with their boobs out?” Although some might have taken offense to titties on display in public, many more

(women and men) found themselves a bit envious and suddenly transformed into a cartoon character afflicted by an eye pop sub-trope. Awooooooooo-gah! Free The Nipple is a global nonprofit organization that peacefully protests for “equality, empowerment and freedom for all human beings,” as they put it. Free The Nipple promotes international Go Topless Day every Aug. 20, which is when you’ll see the Maui Free The Nipple crew bare breasts in unison. The organization has become the foremost voice for raising
awareness of how the public sees gender equality and social justice. Look up the Twitter hashtag #freethenipple and you’ll see the viral impact they’ve had in individual state legislatures. The organization got a big promotional boost in 2012 when they released the documentary film Free The Nipple. The film follows a group of women (the founders of Free The Nipple) as they try to bring about change through various communities in the world through peaceful, topless protests and social service. The
Free The Nipple film has been a leading force in building awareness about their mission and values (it’s currently streaming on Amazon). I watched the documentary and loved it. In fact, I think all women young and old should watch it, even though the organization is still battling an NC-17 rating for the film. When organizing for a cause, the most successful groups are those that raise attention quickly. Going bare-chested in public is most definitely a way to get people to take notice fast.
The act of exposing breasts to the public while walking in a unified group of both women and men is a powerful message. While gender equality is the leading message, it’s not the only one that the mainstream needs to accept. Political feminism is also a huge message that’s spread by this group. After all, men don’t encounter issues for being topless in public. The women in the organization are fighting for the freedom to breastfeed in public without scrutinization, challenging the inherent sexualization of breasts and calling for the removal of bans on natural, female anatomical imagery in the U.S. As a woman in the United States, and with President-Elect Donald Trump taking office soon, I’m actually horrified. The fact that the American public has voted in an ignorant, foul-mouthed, bullying, male chauvinist pig as our next Commander-in-Chief is frightening. After decades of protesting for the women’s right to vote and make decisions regarding our own bodies, there’s an overwhelming sense of fear that many, many women are feeling regarding gender equality in our future government. What does this mean for all of the progress we’ve made with Women’s Suffrage, the 19th Amendment and our rights in regards to our bodies? I asked Topless Theresa how this affects her opinion regarding Free The Nipple’s mission. “With so much uncertainty hanging in the air for the upcoming years, we must face the fear of it and stand our ground,” she said. “If this election has taught me anything, it’s that we have run out of time to be complacent. I feel more empowered now than ever to be a human rights activist.” Protesting for the right to expose one’s bare breasts is not a new fight. We don’t often think of it now, but men fought this fight, too. Once upon a time, it was illegal in the U.S. for men to bare their chests and nipples. In the first decades of the 20th century, men in the U.S. had to cover their nipples in public, most notably at public swimming pools and Coney Island beaches. It wasn’t until the 1930s, when male protesters–and Hollywood celebrities like Clark Gable and Rudolph Valentino–began baring their chests, and that’s when
male undershirt sales began to drop. In 1937, a New York judge overturned the male shirtless ban in that state, and eventually the bans were overturned on a national scale. So, you can see why the Free The Nipple organization continues to challenge the mainstream and individual state legislatures for the freedom for both sexes to be able to flaunt their tatas in public. If men can do it, why can’t women? Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, but for women in the United States, there’s a sense of universal insecurity that’s attached to having breasts. Big ones, small ones, old ones, young ones, droopy ones, fake ones, perfect ones–our boobs are part of our female identity, and we seem to hide their imperfections and natural state as if that’s the normal thing to do. From a young age, we’re taught to cover them, wear a training bra so teenage nipples don’t show through a t-shirt, and otherwise keep them under lock and key. Through conditioning, we’re taught
“
matriarchs in the family; their ultimate purpose of being the procreators of the human race. Venus figurines are some of the oldest relics in human history, dating from as far back as the Gravettian Period (26,000-21,000 years ago). Topless and ample bodies Venus images symbolize femininity, strength and power. Just like the women in the Free the Nipple troops. Maui residents know where to find local nude beaches: Makena’s Little Beach, the stretch of sand between Paia Bay and Baldwin Cove, and other little pockets of nakedness. But going topless at a beach is not the same thing as being nude. Breasts are not considered primary genitals (reproductive or external sex organs). For that reason, going topless at any beach in the State of Hawaii at large is perfectly legal. If you see women topless sunbathing in their own private peace and glory at a non-nude beach or public place, it’s perfectly fine for them to do so. It’s best for you to just allow them to sit happily
“
When I spoke to the lead organizer for the Maui Free The Nipple chapter (who I’ll call Topless Theresa to respect her privacy), I asked her many questions about their cause. She’s clearly passionate about gender equality rights and what it means to her. Listening to her stories, and being in her company, got me thinking about my own relationship to my breasts and how social conditioning has affected me. While it’s highly unlikely I’ll go topless in public on Maui, I also don’t care what other people do. Seeing women topless in public doesn’t concern me one bit. These women are awesome and gutsy, and I respect their mission. “I feel like we’re taking our boobs back,” said Topless Theresa. “Society wants to sell boobs. But guess what, I can wear mine for free.”
I feel like we’re taking our boobs back. Society wants to sell boobs. But guess what, I can wear mine for free.
that respectful ladies do not show their breasts in public. As for those women who do show their breasts in public, society is quick to judge them as exhibitionists, whores or even Europeans. “I have never felt better about my breasts in my life until I started going topless,” said Topless Theresa. But there are social challenges to being topless in public. She told me the harshest public reaction she gets actually comes from other women. In fact, one female scrutinizer threatened to throw a rock at her head at Hana’s Wainapanapa State Park. Female breasts aren’t just beautiful muscles that separate women from men, they’re also what gives life. Breast feeding babies is natural. It’s what all mammals do to feed their young, and as humans this is how we give life. Historically, ample-bodied women with large breasts and large hips have always been seen as desirable, fruitful and life-giving. If you’ve ever studied art history, then you’d be familiar with the “Venus of Willendorf,” and other prehistoric Venus figurines. The figurines are typically engraved calcite or limestone reliefs that depict women with large breasts, wide hips and exaggerated abdomens. These historical pieces are believed to express the importance of

in their topless rights. If you feel uncomfortable seeing a woman topless on the beach, move. If you don’t feel comfortable with your kids seeing a woman topless on the beach, that’s your own issue. Accosting or otherwise attempting to intimidate a woman who’s sunbathing topless is harassment, which is illegal. Before creating an uncomfortable and possibly illegal confrontation, you may also want to consider what kind of example you’re setting for your kids and social circles. You might even want to ask yourself, “Do I have nipple envy?” When Maui’s Free The Nipple crew organizes in topless protest, they come prepared with a flyer printed with the words “Hawaiian Law” across it, noting the specific Hawaii Revised Statutes that support their mission. When they’re out, they hand this flyer to anyone who takes offense or is confused about what they’re doing. There are two relevant state laws. The first, Hawaii Revised Statutes 707-734, states that “A person commits the offense of indecent exposure if the person intentionally exposes the person’s genitals to a person to whom the person is not married under circumstances in which the actor’s conduct is likely to cause affront.” The second, Hawaii Revised Statutes 7121217, states that “ A person commits the offense of open lewdness if in a public
place the person does and lewd act which is likely to be observed by others who would be affronted or alarmed.” Neither of these two laws mention exposing breasts in public. Sunbathing and being topless in public does not constitute lewdness, but throwing your genitals in someone’s face would definitely be considered “lewd.” So if you want to sunbathe topless on Maui, go for it! Just don’t obscenely shake what your mama gave you in a stranger’s personal space. Topless Theresa told me that one of her biggest challenges when being topless is the public’s lack of knowledge. She said this even extends to the Maui Police Department. She said she’s been verbally accosted by MPD officers who threatened to arrest her on charges of disorderly conduct and indecent exposure. But the problem isn’t just about police officers intimidating an American citizen lawfully exercising her rights–it’s also that too many people simply don’t know Hawaii’s laws. An arrest for disorderly conduct due to topless sunbathing or driving around on your moped topless wouldn’t stick in Hawaii’s court of law. It doesn’t fit the statutes and there are not constitutional issues involved. Hawaii is one of just five states in the U.S where it’s legal to be topless in public. “No shirts, no shoes, no problems,” Topless Theresa reminded me. Of course, if you’re at a restaurant that requires shirts and shoes, this applies to both sexes. And, every business has a right to refuse service to anyone they don’t see fit in their establishment. If you’re cruising a taco truck near South Maui beaches and you see a man order a plate in just board shorts (no shirt, no slippahs), it’s okay for women to do that, too. But it probably won’t work out very well for you if you walk into Flatbread Co. on a Friday night with your boobies swingin’ out. Truth is, there’s a fine line between peaceful activism and exhibitionism. If you feel passionate about creating awareness about women’s rights and gender equality, remember that you’re setting an example to the public. The best way to support Free The Nipple’s mission is by creating awareness for some very serious issues in our world: women’s rights and gender equality. While Maui’s Free The Nipple chapter isn’t actively recruiting new members, they’ll certain welcome like-minded folks with open arms. And yes, the chapter does much more than topless protesting on the annual Go Topless Day. They also participate in statewide events like the Pride March in Honolulu and various Breast Cancer awareness projects. Maui Free The Nipple is even planning an upcoming Topless Car Wash in order to raise funds for future events.

The same conscious attention to detail appears on their organic coffee and espresso menu. Hawaiian Moons uses certified organic and fair-trade coffee in all of their coffee drinks, from decaf to drip. They make their own organic cold brew, which gets blended into lattes and mochas. The hot and cold lattes can be made with organic whole, 1 percent or organic, unsweetened coconut, almond or soy milk. The flavored coffees use organic house-made syrups of caramel, vegan vanilla and chocolate, plus you can add organic whip. Coffee drinks are served from 12oz to 24oz. The store also has a new dining area with tables and chairs in their climate controlled store. It’s a great spot to enjoy your food and drinks from the juice bar and deli, or have a seat while you wait for things to be made fresh. Keep an eye on their Facebook page and Twitter (@hawaiianmoons) feed. Hawaiian Moons posts their daily breakfast bar selections in the morning, and lunch and dinner bar selections in the afternoon. eople serious about their healthy food shop at Hawaiian Moons in Kihei. I’ve seen some of the most spectacular juice orders while recently waiting my turn at the juice bar. I heard statements like “I want my beet juice really thick and frothy,” “Are all the ingredients in the juice organic?” and “Where do you get your organic vegetables?” all taken in stride and answered politely by the people behind the counter. Hawaiian Moons opened in 1994. Last year, they grabbed the empty next door unit and expanded, adding their Juice Bar and Deli ordering counter and more shelves and grocery space. It’s like a new store, with the same great focus on sustainability and locally produced goods. The name Hawaiian Moons is inspired by the ancient Hawaiian moon calendar–the practice of planting, fishing and living by cycles of the moon. Hawaiian Moons uses compostable take-out
containers and supports organic farming and sustainable ingredients. The New Year is a popular time to juice cleanse the sins of last year away. Hawaiian Moons has your back if you’re onto a cleanse right now. The fresh juices offered are mainly organic–carrot, apple, beet, red cabbage, cucumber, celery, kale, chard, lemon, garlic and ginger. There are only a couple of juice ingredients that don’t come organic, like local tumeric and Molokai sweet potato, so if you want an entirely organic drink there are many options. Juices come in 12oz, 16oz and 24oz sizes, and if you want to bring your own receptacle, you can. Organic OJ and organic carrot juice comes in a 9oz size as well. They have plenty of recipe blends you can try, or you’re welcome to build your own. I haven’t tried them all yet because I keep going back to the Refresher–mint, parsley, celery, cucumber and apple. Juices are made fresh and served all day from 8am to 9pm, and run from $3.99 to $12.99, depending on the size and what you order. The juice bar also features Awaken Kombucha on tap, with fresh flavors daily. The pitaya or acai bowls are as big as your head here; a full 24oz bowl is priced from
$10.99 to $13.99. These organic fresh fruit extravaganzas have lots of add ons too like aloe juice, Sun Warrior Protein, chia and gluten-free granola. The Basic has acai or dragonfruit, banana, coconut water, granola, local strawberry banana, pineapple, coconut and honey. The Tropical bowl builds on that by adding non-GMO papaya. The Super Green has Hawaiian spirulina, hemp seed and goji while the Energy has cacao nibs and powder, maca, bee pollen and hemp milk. The smoothies are $8.99 for a 16oz size, with eight kinds to choose from. I thought it was smart to offer the simple keiki smoothie (12oz) of organic coco milk, apple juice, strawberry and banana for $5.99. You order your fresh sandwiches, burgers and paninis at the same counter as the juices, but they’re made in the kitchen in back. Hawaiian Moons utilizes local Blue Door Bakery for their bread, and you can buy their loaves there as well. This organic, naturally leavened bread is delicious. Like Hawaiian Moons’ hot bar, the sandwich menu has meat and vegan
Vegan sandwich
items. Vegan burger options include the local Life Foods burger or the Maui Taro patty with Daiya vegan cheese and a sprouted vegan bun or gluten-free bun. For the meat-eaters, they use local proteins when they can like Maui Cattle Company beef, free-range poultry, natural-cured bacon and ham, and dolphin-safe line-caught tuna. Most of the veggies on the sandwiches are organic or local and the spread is vegenaise or house-made dressings. The cold sandwiches are all offered as wraps, and they have non-GMO vegan wraps, too. I’m working my way through their sandwich list, but family favorites are the vegan portobello panini and BLT. The Blue Door Bakery vegan focaccia is outstanding, so I recently ordered the Moons Burger with Maui Cattle beef, organic lettuce, maui onion, local tomato, Dijon Veganaise and organic ketchup on focaccia instead of the sprouted bun. It was spectacular. They offer bacon, avo, cheddar, Swiss and Jack cheese, sauteed mushrooms or grilled Maui onions for burger and sandwich extras.
vegetarian tamales, cilantro lime chicken, goat cheese mashed potato and vegan fajitas are just some of the hot items they post. That doesn’t include the usual raw greens and prepared cold salads that are always in the salad bar, as well as the organic brown rice. The store has also expanded shelf, fridge and produce space. They have more of all the good stuff you like, and some new brands to try as well. Hawaiian Moons also stocks the best sunscreens–great for sunny Kihei. They keep the full menus of the new juice, smoothie deli, sandwich and coffee bar on their website at Hawaiianmoons. com. Hawaiian Moons can also do catering quantities of their hot bar dishes. Just give them a pre-order 48 hours in advance. You can also call in your deli and juice bar orders for pick-up. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit: mauitime.com/food-drink

COMEDIAN RITA RUDNER COMES TO MAUI
Get ready to laugh
I
f you’ve been to Las Vegas lately and took in a few shows, chances are you’ve come across Rita Rudner. Her comedy show is the longest running solo show in Vegas. Seriously: she’s sold over a million and a half tickets. If you haven’t been to Vegas, then you’re in luck because Rudner is on the road with her show. In fact, she’s coming to Maui this Saturday, Jan. 7. Rudner’s comedic genius comes in her witty one-liners, a style she developed for herself in the 1970s. At her Vegas show, she describes the state of Nevada as a place like nowhere else: “Gambling is legal, Prostitution is legal. I guess the jails are filled with people who litter.” She left Florida when she was 15 to dance in Broadway shows in New York like Follies and Mack and Mabel. She noticed that there were few female comedians, and thought that might be her path to success. Rudner says she approached the process by studying Woody Allen and Jack Benny, a learning technique she says she acquired as a dancer. She says she even made diagrams to analyze their comedic style, breaking down their jokes. Rudner says after about two years of study, she got her material together to start her own show. She booked clubs in New York, and garnered appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, David Letterman’s show and did a few HBO Stand
Up specials. That launched her comedy career into the 1980s, where she became one of the premiere female comedy acts. Since then she has done two one hour HBO comedy specials–Born to Be Mild and Married Without Children. She also produced her own BBC shows with her husband Martin Bergman, her frequent collaborator in screenplays and television shows. Rudner has written five books, including fiction and comedy, and most recently created a PBS special of her Vegas show. In 2000, she got a call from the MGM Grand that started her Vegas appearance. Six years later, she moved to a bigger theater at Harrah’s. Starting in 2011, she did a three-year stint at the Venetian, then moved back to Harrah’s. Her mild demeanor, fancy gowns and epigram loving dry humor has amassed fans worldwide to her show. About the only thing not funny about her is that we’re lucky enough to see her live.

'Hidden Figures' An unremarkable movie about three remarkable women at NASA ★★★★★ Rated PG / 127 Min.
T
he space race hit its legendary stride in 1962, when John Glenn became the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth. After being one-upped by Russian cosmonauts, NASA finally got it’s chance to start exploring the cosmos and advance the American space program. What very few people knew was the involvement of three remarkable AfricanAmerican women during that historic mission. Hidden Figures is a flawed but involving, long-overdue portrayal of what these women endured and accomplished during their amazing careers at NASA. We meet the endearing, nerdy Katherine Johnson (played by Taraji P. Henson) and her best friends Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) and Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) as they drive to their first day on the job. We’re immediately struck by the obstacles facing these three black women, employed in a 1960s workplace and living in a society tainted by racism, segregation and sexism. Director Theodore Melfi’s previous film St. Vincent overcame the potentially corny
qualities of its screenplay and shaped a character-driven comedy with right touch of grit and heart. With his latest film, Melfi goes a little too soft. If the intention was to make a movie that reaches the widest possible audience and present a family-friendly version of the events, then mission accomplished. But I kept thinking that Melfi is often presenting an overly gentle depiction of a much tougher, more in-depth story Hidden Figures plays like a cross between The Help and The Right Stuff. Unfortunately, it’s as corny as the former and nowhere near as majestic as the latter. Presenting this history lesson with sass and a sense of empowerment is a welcome touch.Yet, at times, this plays as broadly as a Tyler Perry film. The songs by Pharrell Williams are obtrusive and distractingly modern. The scene where Johnson must make the first of many sad runs to a “Coloreds Only” bathroom in another NASA building should hit hard. Instead, the sequence is set to a bouncy Williams tune and makes the dignity-testing moment feel inappropriately comical. There are more scenes of Henson running in this movie than there are of Arnold Schwar-
These women deserved better, in more ways than one
zenegger running in all of The Running Man. Instead of making us understand the racist work practices Johnson endured, these scenes are redundant. Henson is playing the most complex, fascinating character in the film and Monae has a great scene, late in the film, set in a courtroom. Spencer’s role is underdeveloped but, as always, she evokes a piercing, quiet inner strength. As the gruff but openminded supervisor who inspires Johnson, Kevin Costner is in fine form but Jim Parsons and Kirsten Dunst fail to bring any dimension to their one-note bigot roles. All the moments with John Glenn (embodied by a scene-stealing Glen Powell) are great. So are the quiet, powerful and too-brief scenes depicting racial violence and social injustice. Hidden Figures is too fixated on being a crowd-pleaser and comes across more as a Hol-
lywood movie than the in-depth, complex look at overcoming racism that it should have been. I attended Space Camp in the 1980s, once aspired to become an astronaut and never knew this story until recently. Had this been made as a documentary, it likely would have fleshed out the story and characters more. Yet, while there are exceptions, documentaries aren’t as widely distributed as they should be and often get lost. This film, with its moving end credits sequence, insures that this story won’t get lost. But Hidden Figures is just too formulaic to hit as hard as it should. Still, there are enough moments here that sting and inspire. If it encourages young people with brains, ambition and an interest in the cosmos to pursue a career in sciencerelated fields, then Melfi’s film will transcend its limitations. ■

Horoscope
Sign Language CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Perhaps you’re too preoccupied with other things right now, because all the usual methods of getting you excited and involved with the present moment are frustratingly falling a bit short. Those around you are also at a loss as to how to get your attention. What do we need to do to get you to snap out of it, Cap? This is not only frustrating, it’s ridiculous. Really, what would it take for you to be fully present in the here and now? A mountain of gold? True love? An alien invasion? Whatever it is, you might as well ask for it–most of us are so fed up with your distraction that we just might get it for you.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
The days I can force myself to get up and write first thing–before breakfast, even–are the days I get the most done. I won’t say it’s easy, though, to drag myself out of bed. My natural instinct is to loaf around, eat, and prepare for my day. Pursuing that course, however, sometimes means that it can be an hour or more before I get anything done at all. Use next week’s astrological influences to add a new trick into your repertoire: early morning productivity. Give yourself a block of time–just 15 minutes, even–before anything else, in which to do something creative, or just get something done. You’ll be psyched at how easy it is to be brilliant and productive the rest of the day, after that.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
Where are the kids? You’re sorely in need of some playful, innocent fun, so hanging with your nieces and nephews or any other of the sweet little rugrats in your life would be a fantastic way to spend your week. It would help you remember to smile a lot more, to practice more patience and kindness, and to simply relax and be silly–these are things you’ve sort of forgotten, of late. Even just hanging out by a playground (as creepy as that sounds, it doesn’t have to be evil-intentioned) could help you remember what you need to remember. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Supposedly, since you’re the last sign in the zodiac wheel, you’ve gone through all the other signs on your way to where you are. You’ve been there and done that. But I’m here to remind you, oh wise one: the thing’s a wheel. That means you’re getting ready to jump back into the first sign in the zodiac, Aries, and do the whole thing over. Many Pisceans, in fact, become much more Ram-like in the course of their lives (consequently having a much easier time making decisions!). This week, in preparation for your next chapter, act as much like an Aries as possible: when considering options, always choose the rashest, loudest, boldest, and most outrageous one. You’ll probably wonder why you didn’t start doing that before. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
You don’t always understand things or people who derive their power from being rooted, immovable, and solid. Your strength comes from your movement, energy, and drive. But as versatile as you are, there come moments when you really need someone with roots sunk deep, who’s strong because they never change and are reliable and hyper-responsible. When some kind of destructive wave of change sweeps through, your strength might keep you from drowning, but not from being swept away. This, my lovable Ram, is one of those dangerous times. Find the biggest tree (in human form) you can, wrap your arms around it, and hang on with all your might. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
It’s not like the idea you’re trying to push is all that radical. In fact, you know in your gut that its time has come. It’s just the natural next step in a progression that’s been happening for years. Nevertheless, you’re bound to encounter some deep resistance from some staunch advocates of stability who have dug in their heels and refuse to accept inevitable change. The danger is that you might identify with them–having so often advocated tradition, permanence, or just solid core values–so much that you might ease up on them. Don’t. This change will come regardless– but it’ll work out a lot better with you spearheading it. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Some great qualities skip generations. It’s part of the pendulum swing of rebelling against your parents. That means that in some ways you might have more in common with your grandparents than your parents. This is why I suggest looking to them for guidance and/or inspiration this week, when you’re uncertain about your next step. Find out what they were like when they were younger, before they were grandparents–by asking them, or by plumbing photos and letters. Your answers and motivation lie there.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
You need more life in your life, more living things around you right now–more companions, more plants, more animals–all with their own agendas and lives that overlap with yours. It’ll help keep you from getting trapped in boring, self-involved, self-destructive patterns. Most of your worst problems are selfinflicted, and they happen most often when you’re plate is less than full, leaving too much free time to subconsciously come up with ways to sabotage yourself. Go buy an aquarium, or some houseplants, or host dinner parties all week, or find some other way to make your plate feel full.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
I miss having Virgos in my life. I’ve pretty much always had one or more close by, until my most recent chapter, which has been marked by a deplorable dearth of vivacious Virgos. So what? Well, I’m not the only one missing your unique and inspiring vibe. People everywhere are on the hunt for a valuable Virgo. Whether or not you have room in your life for a new friend or chosen family member is up to you. But if you decide that could be kind of nice, they’re out there, looking. Just ask around. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
This week could be like being able to go on a shopping spree with someone else’s money. That’s a fantasy every Libra can appreciate it, isn’t it? But beware–nothing’s really for free, and the kinds of sacrifices or concessions you’d be forced to make for this dubious privilege might not be worth the glee of so much frivolous spending. The temptation is terrible, I know, and you’re not generally one to look a gift horse in the mouth–but make an exception this time, please. There are strings and more strings attached. Unless you’ve got some kind of bondage fetish, say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
What started out as a carefree roll in the hay has suddenly become so much more–and not in a good way. It’s as if the hay were at the top of a steep, rocky hill, and your initially gentle tumble has become a painful, unstoppable plunge down the slope. This week, though, you may have the chance to catch yourself on a ledge or protruding branch. This is your chance to extricate yourself without doing much further injury to either of you. Unfortunately, the temptation to continue this disastrous nose-dive is likely to be perversely greater than ever. Resist, though, Scorpio. For everyone’s sake, find a way to resist.

When I need to motivate myself to really clean and reorganize my apartment, I invite people over. Left to my own devices, I get a bit done, then my laziness takes over and I leave the job unfinished. But if I know people are coming by, that’s all the incentive I need to really get the whole place into shape. Follow my lead. You’re in need of a little impetus that you’re unable to provide for yourself. This is not the time to let procrastination or your infamous laidback attitude mess you up. Use whatever tricks you’ve got up your sleeve to get your own ass in gear. To contact Caeriel send mail to sign.language.astrology@gmail.com
